I previously worked for a financial services company (first job out of college) from April 2020-June 2021 selling retirement plans and life insurance. I would make commission based on the expected first year payment from the client I signed up.
The last client I signed up would have been at the LATEST January 2021 as I took leave end of January until June at which point I resigned.
I have just received a letter from a debt collector saying I owe over $600. Here’s what they said:
“We have been retained by [Company] to recover unearned prepaid commissions from former agents. The above amount represents commissions that were advanced to you that became unearned because the policy holder, although encouraged to premium continue coverage, stopped making payments and allowed the policy to lapse, or adjusted the originally agreed upon payment schedule.”
I’m wondering if I truly owe this since it’s a debt collector and I never received an invoice from the company, if it is worth it to get a lawyer, if it’s possibly past the statute of limitations since it’s been over 3 years since my last commission payment (2 years since they would have completed their first year premiums). Any advice would be helpful. TIA!

I recently found a new doctor's office in my small town (NH). They are a family care office that is attached and affiliated with the local hospital. I have a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). As part of the onboarding process as a new patient, they required me to have a establishing care visit where I provided information about medical history medical concerns, etc. I have already paid the ~$150 office visit fee for this appointment as I understand it doesn't count as preventative care.
During the visit, the nurse practitioner said she wanted to do blood work for the annual physical that she had scheduled (less than two months away). The blood work she ordered seemed routine like a lipid pane, testosterone level check, STD testing, and vitamin D levels. I went to laboratory services within the hospital that same day to have blood drawn.
A little over a month after that initial establishing care visit, I received a bill in the mail for the amount of >$1700 with a contracted insurance discount of ~$500. Resulting in a balance of over $1200. I called my insurance company to see why the claim was denied and $0 was paid as I was told this was bloodwork that would be reviewed at my upcoming physical. My insurance company told me that the claim was submitted with the primary billing code of 'illness' and that if any routine blood work was submitted with the routine charge code, that it would be 100% covered with my insurance as it's considered 'preventative care'.
I have spent almost two months going back and forth with the hospital billing, medical records, and family care office. Getting the runaround about codes being submitted and other possible delays between the family office and medical records, billing not having any updates for me, etc.
As of yesterday I finally heard back from the family care practice manager. She told me that all of the codes were submitted properly and that going back and changing the codes to then submit a Correct Claim to my insurance company would be considered fraud. She told me that she had spoken to the billing department and they had said they were unwilling to write off any of the charges as they were not going to be covered by insurance even if they had been charged differently. I told her I spoke with my insurance and that information was not correct. I told her that the only test I had requested that day was the STD testing and the other tests were the primary care nurse practioner's 'standard' testing for annual physicals. The Practice Manager said she would talk with billing again and get back to me.
This afternoon, I received a "Past Due" notice for the bill and it says that if I do not pay within 7 days, it will be sent for a credit review. I work as a contractor for a company that services the federal government and hold an active security clearance. I cannot be seen to be a financial risk with something like collections on my credit history. I have the funds available to pay the ~$1200 bill in my HSA, but I can't help but feel this is wrong and incorrectly billed.
What (if any) recourse do I have for this? Should I just eat the $1200 and not have any blood work performed unless it's at an annual physical in the future (even in my primary care NP wants it done before the physical so we can review the results then)? Am I misunderstanding the HDHP 'preventative care' coverage?
Lastly, if I'm not misunderstanding all of this, is there some government agency to report this to? I have been calling, leaving voicemails, and getting the runaround between different departments for months with 0 progress.

i received shocking news on mother's day- i won my disability case! on the first hearing! i remember coming to this sub searching for advice when i first applied. it seemed mostly just others asking the same questions i had or talking about being denied, so i figured i'd post about my rare case that got approved (in the US.) i can't give legal advice of course, just share my experience and hope it helps someone.
my migraines became chronic october 2020. i quit my job after being denied fmla leave. i had only worked on the record for 3 years at minimum wage jobs. the income was just enough so my husband (bf at the time) and i never really had to worry about bills. i first applied for ssdi in november 2022 (i wish i had applied sooner, i just was so stressed and didn't think i had a chance anyway.) got my first denial letter i think in april 2023. my MIL gave me the info of a few good local lawyers from her local MS facebook support group. i googled some of the names, checking reviews of some of them. called the first one on my list, was told they wouldn't represent me since i'm under 60 (or maybe 50? point being: 26 is a bit younger.) fair enough, so i called the next on my list. answered some basic screening questions and got a phone appointment set up.
i applied for migraines but also listed my mental health diagnoses. usually my mental health is manageable, but with the migraines it started to decline. i had the feeling this lawyer thought i was more likely to get ssdi for my mental health rather than migraines. but i maybe i was reading that wrong and he had to ask more about the mental health since it's a bit more complex to understand than migraines for some people idk. regardless i was honest and he agreed to represent me and was really upfront about how the process works. he told me i'd likely lose the first and maybe 2nd case, but he thought i had a shot. that gave me some hope since he had a lot of positive reviews and i'm sure wouldn't take me if he thought it was hopeless!
still, i stressed a lot because i struggled to find a doctor willing to make a disability statement. it was mostly an issue for me because i had just been forced to switch insurance (turned 27 yay) which made me have to find new providers that don't know me well. luckily my psychologist said he was willing and gave a letter of support! and so timeskip after some more denials, i'm set for a hearing over the phone. my lawyer called me the day before to go over everything; checking that i'm not exaggerating answers, pointing out possible things they could ask about, stuff like that. (not like coaching, moreso just checking that i can give clear answers and not panic lol.) he said he knew the judge and thought she was very fair.

so then mother's day i get a call from my lawyer. i rush to pick up because my social security online account status updated to final review 2 days prior so i knew a decision was coming. and my lawyer tells me, "congratulations, you won" !!!! I contain a scream and say in disbelief, "oh my god, i didn't expect to win my 1st at all!" he explained that actually the judge had written to the doctor about my migraines and the doctor disagreed. my lawyer wrote to the judge that he disagreed with the doctor's descision as he was off about some facts in his report, and the judge agreed with my lawyer!!! so i won for the migraines! he told me about how much i can be expecting and that i'll have to switch my primary insurance to medicare soon.
so i think the moral is: roll a nat20 on lawyer and judge selection and you're good! jk. kinda. i know i'm incredibly lucky to have gotten approved and i know there's so many of you out there that absolutely deserve it but have to fight til the end of the legal system. i mean even my dad was told by his doctor to stop working after a heart attack, but he had to go to the final hearing (in which that judge apologized to him that he wasn't approved earlier.) but if you're considering applying or going thru it and are scared now, just know it's not impossible! i was an anxiety-ridden mess right before my trial and even had a mild migraine during the whole thing, but it went really well! and soon i'll be able to pay off my debts and once again contribute financially!!

my migraines became chronic october 2020. i quit my job after being denied fmla leave. i had only worked on the record for 3 years at minimum wage jobs. the income was just enough so my husband (bf at the time) and i never really had to worry about bills. i first applied for ssdi in november 2022 (i wish i had applied sooner, i just was so stressed and didn't think i had a chance anyway.) got my first denial letter i think in april 2023. my MIL gave me the info of a few good local lawyers from her local MS facebook support group. i googled some of the names, checking reviews of some of them. called the first one on my list, was told they wouldn't represent me since i'm under 60 (or maybe 50? point being: 26 is a bit younger.) fair enough, so i called the next on my list. answered some basic screening questions and got a phone appointment set up.
i applied for migraines but also listed my mental health diagnoses. usually my mental health is manageable, but with the migraines it started to decline. i had the feeling this lawyer thought i was more likely to get ssdi for my mental health rather than migraines. but i maybe i was reading that wrong and he had to ask more about the mental health since it's a bit more complex to understand than migraines for some people idk. regardless i was honest and he agreed to represent me and was really upfront about how the process works. he told me i'd likely lose the first and maybe 2nd case, but he thought i had a shot. that gave me some hope since he had a lot of positive reviews and i'm sure wouldn't take me if he thought it was hopeless!
still, i stressed a lot because i struggled to find a doctor willing to make a disability statement. it was mostly an issue for me because i had just been forced to switch insurance (turned 27 yay) which made me have to find new providers that don't know me well. luckily my psychologist said he was willing and gave a letter of support! and so timeskip after some more denials, i'm set for a hearing over the phone. my lawyer called me the day before to go over everything; checking that i'm not exaggerating answers, pointing out possible things they could ask about, stuff like that. (not like coaching, moreso just checking that i can give clear answers and not panic lol.) he said he knew the judge and thought she was very fair.

First off I work for my health insurer so I know how and why things get denied. My husband was in the hospital and I got a bill from the anesthesia that was done and it was the full amount. My insurance had denied it. So I looked up the explanation of benefits and saw improper billing/coding. I knew right away what was wrong. So I attempted to call their number and relayed that my insurance will pay it in full if they add the appropriate modifiers and use the correct diagnosis coding. I told them I know this because I work for them processing claims. They did not take my advice at all. The claim ends up in a collection agency. So I contact customer service of my insurance and they call the collection and told them they will try and resolve it. Well the anesthesia place wouldn’t listen to them either. I did nothing at this point. A few years go by and I get a bill again from the collection agency. So now my clams are steamed. I pulled off a copy of my explanation of benefits that outlined why it was denied and showed I don’t owe anything. I wrote them a note saying the provider is at fault here and I will not be paying this and they are just going to have to eat it. Haven’t heard any more from them so far. Lol.

Hi all, kind of in a conundrum. Been in a relationship with this girl for ~1 year and she has 2 dogs, 2 cats. One of her cats is older (~10 years old) and had a badly swollen, glaucoma eye that needed to be removed. He also has a bunch of bumps that needed to be biopsied. The total bill is ~$3800. About ~$1300 of that will be covered from insurance--so the total is ~$2500.
She makes ~$160K, but has to work multiple jobs to make this much and is also currently studying for nursing. She's got ~$25-30K in student loans from undergrad and ~$15K in additional expenses coming up for tuition. On top of that she has a ~$2500/month apartment.
I make ~$120 K (from one job), but I am under the threat of being laid off (been put on a PIP a few days ago), with $0 in student loans. I pay ~$1550/month for my apartment.
We've been talking about moving in and I really do like her--she's kind and attentive. There are things I wish she would do better, but overall she is very sweet and nice.
Ever since I started going through some work stresses and anxiety issues a few months ago-- I've basically been living with her for the past ~1.5 months. I help out by doing the dishes, walking her dogs, and paying for groceries and takeout.
I really do like all 4 of her pets also. But I also get mildly annoyed at how she kind of "hoards" or "collects" animals? Like they're impulsive decisions and she doesn't think about the financial ramifications later on. Anyways, this cat's got surgery and biopsy scheduled for today.
Should I help pay for this? I feel like it's her responsibility, but I was thinking of chipping in ~$300 for this. Would I be an AH if I didn't pay at all? Or only this amount?
She hasn't asked me, but I can tell she's kind of hinting at it from the way she talks about the mounting bill.

I’m at the stage where I’ve narrowed my options down to 3, all in network with my insurance. I have close to $2000 saved; it looks like my out of pocket maximum is $5300 so I’m going to save at least that much. I am in the process of getting my letter, which should honestly only take a few more weeks as my therapist thinks it’ll be a fast process.
All that being said, is now a good time to start scheduling consults? I know one of my surgeons is scheduling 7 months out, which is bad for my dysphoria but great for my savings account 💀 I just want to make sure I have enough time to get my ducks in a row. Would love to hear any experiences/advice.

Hi, I have recently been taken to an enforcement agency by my council, as we had not paid an outstanding bill, however, we had not received any letters previously to that about them sending us to court or a debt collections agency, even though we have an email on file and a number (which they have contacted me on before), they decided to only send us 2 letters which we did not recieve. They have placed over 300 pounds extra in the two letters they sent, as they claim these were reminder letters and the debt agency has added their own fees on aswell. I have asked why they didn’t try contacting me with all points of contact available and they said they’re short staffed and this is all they could do (which is crazy you’re sending someone to a debt agency the least you can do is leave a voicemail?) I understand I need to pay the old bill (which I would have done if I received notice) but these extra charges are too much, is there any advice I can get.
Ps. I was aware there was a bill and I had a payment plan setup for the outstanding balance and my yearly bill , however I moved house and received a letter which had a payment plan setup for the exact amount I was already paying so I just continued paying this to the new account, I have only just been informed this was the new council tax bill ( I have just moved here from Africa so this is all new to me, I thought they just made a new plan including the outstanding balance and the new houses council tax bill)

despite attempting to pay off a debt after a payment plan months ago, for the first time ever, the company said they had my card info and just needed the confirmation from me and everything would go through. Weirdly no way to record it as an event that took place
this IS a process i've done before regularly elsewhere. Difference is theres only ever been one specific person i call who deals with all this stuff, they have a name and give out a receipt once the process is complete. Very normal and professional.
fast forward to now and i got a letter in the mail of an overpayment existing on the account. i'm told please find a refund check in the amount of the overpayment.

I had the idea of this thread regarding the fact people have made a video targeting this sub.
STRATEGIES
1st of all, I think it’s very important to stay calm and respond respectfully. This way, we are showing them a mature behavior.

My best employee quit on the spot because I wouldn’t let her go to her college graduation
I manage a team, and part of their jobs is to provide customer support over the phone. Due to a new product launch, we are expected to provide service outside of our normal hours for a time. This includes some of my team coming in on a day our office is normally closed (based on lowest seniority because no one volunteered).
One employee asked to come in two hours after the start time due to her college graduation ceremony being that same day (she was taking night classes part-time in order to earn her degree). I was unable to grant her request because she was the employee with the lowest seniority and we need coverage for that day. I said that if she could find someone to replace her for those two hours, she could start later. She asked her coworkers, but no one was willing to come in on their day off. After she asked around, some people who were not scheduled for the overtime did switch shifts with other people (but not her) and volunteered to take on overtime from others who were scheduled, but these people are friends outside of work, and as long as there is coverage I don’t interfere if people want to give or take overtime of their own accord. (Caveat: I did intervene and switch one person’s end time because they had concert tickets that they had already paid for, but this was a special circumstance because there was cost involved.)
I told this team member that she could not start two hours late and that she would have to skip the ceremony. An hour later, she handed me her work ID and a list of all the times she had worked late/come in early/worked overtime for each and every one of her coworkers. Then she quit on the spot.
I’m a bit upset because she was my best employee by far. Her work was excellent, she never missed a day of work in the six years she worked here, and she was my go-to person for weekends and holidays.
Even though she doesn’t work here any longer, I want to reach out and tell her that quitting without notice because she didn’t get her way isn’t exactly professional. I only want to do this because she was an otherwise great employee, and I don’t want her to derail her career by doing this again and thinking it is okay. She was raised in a few dozen different foster homes and has no living family. She was homeless for a bit after she turned 18 and besides us she doesn’t have anyone in her life that has ever had professional employment. This is the only job she has had. Since she’s never had anyone to teach her professional norms, I want to help her so she doesn’t make the same mistake again. What do you think is the best way for me to do this?

This is about me. I know for a fact it is because this exact thing happened to me in that time frame. And I know exactly who it was.
I’d like to tell this person that I have a general idea of the social norms but (redacted — medical conditions) make it impossible to stay on this side of reality very long. I did however get medicated and become a GM myself that would never be a jerk like he was.
And it wasn’t about the graduation. At freaking all. It was so much more than that. It was about having one day that was just mine.
Joke’s on him though. That diploma has gotten me further in life than I would have gotten without.

Hi all,
Im looking for some advice on property deeds and who enforces them.
I recently started a new job from which a received a van to complete the works(fully insured & taxed by the company), initially it was just a white panel but has since been upgraded and has the company logo all over it. A few weeks after this, I got called into work to discuss where I park the vehicle at home, as a neighbour had complained they are struggling to get out of their drive as a result of where I park it. Now for reference I park it on the road, no yellow lines, in the flow of traffic in a stack of other neighbours vehicles, so if my van is causing this so are all the other vehicles, not parked on a dropped curb and not infront of anyone's house, it's just next to a path, on a fence line, not affecting the lighting or view of anyone's property. After explaining this to my company they were absolutely fine with it so I don't have any concerns there but having a little dig into my property deeds I found this statement;
"The transferee shall not keep any caravan or commercial vehicle (other than light) to remain on any part of the property nor to park or allow to be parked any such caravan or commercial vehicle on the road way adjacent to the property except whilst delivering to or collecting from the property"
Now I fully understand that based on that I shouldn't be parking there, however, every other house has a caravan parked on their drive.
So based on this my question is, if my neighbour were to take this further who deals with it is it the property developer(as its their signature on the deeds) or the council? And if they were successful with a law suit or whatever would happen, would that mean all caravans and other commercial vehicles on the street would need moving also?

Using IAU as an example, it seems like it’s taxed at a higher “collectible” rate, and so I thought, “I’ll just buy it within my Roth IRA so I don’t have to worry my pretty little head about all that” but I came across some info about special rules for IRAs being barred from holding collectibles... with exceptions.
So I busted open the IAU prospectus (PDF) and came across the “Investment by Certain Retirement Plans” paragraph on page 35:
Can someone ELI5? Anyone else here holding gold and have a handle on the tax consequences?
I understand people will have opinions on gold not being a good investment, or how ETFs don't give you access to physical gold, and I understand. I'm just trying to learn about the tax stuff.

Section 408(m) of the Code provides that the purchase of a “collectible” as an investment for an IRA, or for a participant directed account maintained under any plan that is tax-qualified under Section 401(a) of the Code, is treated as a taxable distribution from the account to the owner of the IRA, or to the participant for whom the plan account is maintained, of an amount equal to the cost to the account of acquiring the collectible. The Trust has received a private letter ruling from the IRS which provides that the purchase of Shares by an IRA or a participant-directed account maintained under a plan that is tax-qualified under Section 401(a) of the Code, will not constitute the acquisition of a collectible or be treated as resulting in a taxable distribution to the IRA owner or plan participant under Code Section 408(m). However, in the event any redemption of Shares results in the distribution of gold bullion to an IRA or a participant-directed account maintained under a plan that is tax-qualified under Section 401(a) of the Code, such distribution would constitute the acquisition of a collectible to the extent provided under Section 408(m) of the Code.
