Tethered - Ch 9 - Hallowe'en

Chapter 9 of work in progress
TW/CW: Angst, discussion of attempted suicide, implied character death, internalized homophobia, discussion of conversion treatment
Summary:
Crowley wakes up in a mental hospital with no memory of how he got there. Without his demonic powers, neither the doctors, nor the people who claim to be his family will believe he is who he says he is. With the evidence against him mounting, his only lifeline to the real world is a cryptic note left by an unseen messenger. The longer he stays in this hospital, the harder it becomes to recall for sure, is Crowley really a demon of Hell? Or has his entire existence been nothing more than a delusion conjured by a grieving mind?
Excerpt:
It had been more than twenty years since Crowley had watched his best friend walk out of his life. Many times since then, he would see a head of short blond curls and hold out hope that he'd see that beautiful, angelic face beneath it. Bowties and libraries and bandstands conjured up bittersweet memories of a bygone life.
But frequent exposure to certain stimuli dampens the physiological response, and eventually Crowley stopped noticing things like that. The boy he knew so well was gone, and by all accounts, he would not be coming back.
Which is why it was such a shock to walk into the pub one Hallowe’en and see a halo of curls and ridiculous bowtie, that unmistakable nose and the warmest eyes he had ever known. He almost walked back out the doors, but for one thing.

2024.05.13 16:49 5akeris Excel Desktop Slow to Open Files Sync'd via OneDrive

What does "slowly" mean: takes about 10 seconds to open an excel file (used to use an onpremise file server that apparently took 2-3s to open a file) How users access the sharepoint files
  1. most sharepoint sites are sync'd via the OneDrive app (meaning they show up under the tenant name in file explorer - with the work icon)
  2. it also happens if you're using OneDrive online, and attempt to open a file in local app
Other Notes
Troubleshooting attempted:
  1. If you copy the file from the sync'd sharepoint site to c:\temp for example, it opens in 2-3s
  2. If you copy the file from the sync'd sharepoint site to your documents (which are backed up/sync'd by OneDrive as well) it takes ~10s
  3. If you quit onedrive (the file still resides on the PC due to it being stored on device), it opens in 2-3s. Once you start OneDrive again, it's back to ~10s
  4. If we "create a shortcut" to that sharepoint site (so it shows up as a link in OneDrive section of File Explorer instead of under the work/business side, it still takes ~10s to open
  5. if you open a PDF from the sync'd sharepoint site (not the shortcut, the business/work sync'd site), it opens in 2-3s (so this seems to be an issue for office apps only)
  6. If you open Excel (the primary file the users are worried about) in Safe Mode and navigate to the folder structure to find the file (this is a royal pain, I'd use it for troubleshooting, but not for production/day to day use), it opens in 5-7s (so better, but not as quick as it should) - this effectively also sidesteps a "disabling addins" step
  7. Multiple different PC's (spec'd as high as Core i5-1345u, 32gb ram, 2tb nvme ssd, windows 11), some fresh install of windows with no other software aside from default windows apps & office
  8. different internet connections (valley fiber [local isp], bellmts [local isp], tethered to rogers cell phone) with different routers & different security settings on said routers (home vs office vs cell phone)
  9. different internet connection types (ie. while in the office both on wired and wireless, at home on wired and wireless)

2024.05.13 15:07 xXKikitoXx The white-haired girl was unexpectedly pretty. (Alternate timeline Part 9)

PREVIOUS
The light coloured wooden floorboards creaked softly under my weight as I struggled. Using human crutches wasn’t difficult, but it was demeaning. They were miss matched and that was confusing. One was from a set I'd had as a child, while I didn’t recognise the other at all.
Without giving it too much thought I turned into my fathers study to find the room was changed. It was dilapidated. The furniture was rotten and falling apart while all the books were moth eaten. Brigetta sat on the floor, weaving thread into talismans.
‘Brigetta…? What are you doing?’ I asked as the space gradually fell away around us.
‘Making an anchor for you,” she answered softly. She wasn’t crying exactly, her eyes weren’t red and she wasn’t sobbing, but water ran down her face from her eyes. It was an unnatural amount that pooled around her in a puddle as she worked.
‘Why?” my voice echoed, confused.
‘Because they’re going to kill you.’
Cold dread trickled down my spine, ‘…Who are..?’
‘The Fae.’
As she spoke a shadow moved beside her and Markos appeared from nowhere. He held something in his hand, however I wasn’t able to make it out as the panic jolted me back to consciousness.
Taking a deep breath in, I was awake before I opened my eyes. Sweat dampened my clothes and I blinked slowly as understanding came to me, I had been dreaming. I couldn’t remember falling asleep, but I awoke in darkness. My mouth was dry and the only part of me that didn’t hurt was the leg I couldn’t feel, every other part wished for death.
However I was laying on something soft under light sheets. They ruffled softly as I turned over, and the warning came immediately, “Don’t try anything stupid.” It was Nathaniel who had spoken. His voice was somehow reassuring, smooth and calm. He was sitting not far from me beside the glow of a small lamp with a book in hand. It backlit his hair, giving him an ethereal halo, and he didn’t so much as bother to look over when I stirred.
“Where am I?” I asked, confused. My voice was husky and quiet as the vocal cords struggled to work.
“You’re in my chambers, and if you try anything, I’ll kill you outright.”
It came back to me gradually, being carried through endless marble hallways, and forced to bathe. I exhaled with shame as I remembered. Showing weakness was unacceptable in my family and I was a disgrace for being captured alive… My father would hate me if he knew, he would probably never speak to me again.
“...Why haven’t you killed me already?”
“Because you’re of no use dead.”
I wasn’t sure I was of any use alive either, “...Thank you,” I murmured softly.
“It’s too soon to thank me,” he answered, uncaring, as he turned a page and I allowed my gaze to drop
He was probably right. Even if I was safe right now, this was only temporary, and I didn’t have the energy to argue even if I wanted to. “How long has it been?” I asked instead.
“A couple of days,” he moved when he spoke and I automatically tried to recoil.
It was a wasted effort. I could hardly move at all, let alone defend myself. My injuries had set, and the muscles were simultaneously weak and stiff. I swallowed anxiously as he walked past. “Whatever you’re going to do, please don’t… I’ll do anything you want…”
Of course I was lying. Pretending to be afraid and hoping I was correct in what he wanted to hear as I tried to anticipate how best to survive this situation. “What I want right now, is for you to stop talking.”
Nathaniel passed me again and I flinched, maybe I wasn’t pretending as much as I wanted to be, I thought bitterly. However, I realized then that he was largely ignoring me. He had grabbed another book from somewhere in the darkness, and returned to his seat without acknowledging me.
Gradually, my heart rate slowed. The fae wasn’t going to do anything, he was just existing in the same space… but why? Was it a ruse? Another interrogation technique? Maybe he was trying to break my mind with the endless uncertainty. I watched him with wary caution as I debated whether or not I could use my charm to get him to let me go.
However, between the warmth of the bed and the gentle rustle of paper turning, my eyelids were growing heavy. My thoughts drifted and my consciousness was slipping away. I didn’t trust him, and I didn’t want to risk being killed in my sleep, but, maybe that wouldn’t be the worst way to die. At least I wouldn’t know it had happened…
***
When I awoke next I was alone in the plush bed. Sunlight glistened off my lashes and I turned over to get away from the brightness. The air was cold and every part of me ached, but the blankets were warm. I pulled them tighter around myself, nesling lower into them as I cautiously looked around.
In daylight, the room was cluttered. A thousand different ornaments, tapestries, crystals and pendulums crowded every surface. Books were haphazardly stacked in piles on the floor and leaned at precarious angles, leaving only narrow pathways through the mess.
To the right were french doors leading to a balcony. They were framed by burgundy velvet curtains that cascaded downward into heavy folds of excess fabric, and semi-transparent curtain sheers. At the foot of the bed was a Victorian era fainting lounge with similar dark velvet upholstery and an asymmetrical, ornately carved, wooden backrest.
On the left was a small partitioning wall that blocked the rest of the space from immediate view and the entryway to the bathroom. Antique furniture hidden among the mess lined the perimeters of the room and refracted light cast dull rainbows across the walls. It was beautiful, in a chaotic way.
Nathaniel was nowhere in sight and the room was quiet except for the gentle tick of the pendulums. I was alone as far as I could tell, but it was with caution that I began to move.
“Hello?” I called, wincing as I put pressure on my arm to push myself up.
The room remained silent and I glanced around to be sure. I had half expected this to be some kind of trap, however, nothing happened and I carefully swung my legs over the edge of the bed. Heaving the damaged one over with disgust.
A thin trail of magic wrapped around my ankle and I smiled bitterly. It was a tether, binding me to the bed with a limited range of freedom. The writing itself wasn’t overly complicated, but I had no magic to use and the breakpoint was on the ceiling where I couldn’t reach just yet. With a small irritated huff I gave up, moving instead to find a weapon. That fae bastard would regret bringing me here.
Using the bed frame as support, I stood before awkwardly hopping across the room. I tried the balcony doors first, they were locked both physically and with a rigid barrier spell. Next I tried the main door only to find a similar situation before debating whether or not I could make it out the bathroom window. Most likely not, I realized bitterly. Escaping wasn’t a task I was capable of in my injured state.
However, that didn’t make me defenseless. I limped toward the desk and rummaged through the draws. Inside each drawer was no better than the rest of the room. They were filled with ink pots and quills, pens, pencils, paintbrushes and loose paperwork.
Small trinkets and other useless things that I suppose he simply couldn’t find any other place for only added to the disarray. Shutting the drawer I snorted in exasperation. It was ridiculous. What kind of person keeps so many pointless items? He must’ve had a hundred shiny but harmless trinkets.
Eventually I came across an engraved pocket knife made of silver. It opened with a swift click and the blade was remarkably sharp. I could kill Nathaniel easily with it… However, the thought of doing so made me nauseous and I closed the blade. It was pointless anyway, even if I killed him now, I was still trapped in the fae castle.
Placing it back on the desk I slowly sank to the floor instead. I hated myself for this, for being so weak. My fingers had little grip strength with my knuckles still healing, and with my good leg being compromised it was difficult to stand for too long. If I had killed him in the forest none of this would be a problem and I would still be with my family.
Some part of me knew I had sealed my own fate, but I wasn’t sure I regretted it. At least if I died, the war would be closer to ending and I sighed, running my hands back through my hair. The situation was hopeless. I didn’t know what to do, and I was afraid of what Nathaniel would do to me when he returned. For all I knew this was just another interrogation technique…
A muted click interrupted my thoughts and I glanced up. A moment of silence followed the sound and I waited in tense uncertainty: had Nathaniel returned? Seconds passed before I heard the soft swoosh of the door closing again and the hair on the back of my neck prickled. Someone had entered the room.
Boots clacked on the floorboards in purposefully slow steps as they navigated and I moved immediately. I crawled quietly across the floor and slipped under the bed, wedging myself between the clutter beneath it. Moments later the footsteps came closer, and I watched as small white shoes with a neat heel walked past the bed. Slender legs with tanned skin filled the shoes and the girl came to a stop beside the desk where I had been.
She stood there a moment and I held my breath as she examined the area. However when she turned to go, the pocket knife fell off the desk. It landed among the junk on the floor and she stooped to collect it. The woman was human, and remarkably beautiful.
Her long white-blonde hair fell forward over her shoulders and her slender fingers wrapped around the pocket knife. Her nails were manicured, painted pastel pink with small gems encrusted on them. She wore light makeup with matching diamantes on her upper cheek bones and bore the contract marks of a Fae agreement under them.
For a brief moment I wondered who’s ‘property’ she was. Probably not Nathaniel’s otherwise, she wouldn’t be creeping around his room like a thief, I thought as she stood again. No emotion crossed her face as she set the knife back where it had been before it fell and wondered what would happen if she saw me. Would I be able to convince her to help me? She didn’t seem unkind, however, fae ‘pets’ are well trained.
They’re loyal to their masters in all ways, and in combat they’re deadly. On the battlefield they cut through my father’s human worshipers with no remorse or restraint, and will just as easily cut down any un-reveanted vanir who crosses their path. Worse still is that they’re impossible to spot until they attack.
They look alike to any other human and blend in among our forces. That was part of the reason we began to poison our horde, the trace of death separates them from the vibrant life of those controlled by the Fae.
Eventually the girl turned away and disappeared from view. It seemed whatever she was looking for she hadn't found it and I exhaled with pure relief when I heard the door close again as she exited. I wasn’t sure I could have taken the stress if I had been found.
Laying under the bed my body ached and my bruised ribs hurt. I waited there a while, gathering the willpower to wriggle back out before deciding not to. It would take too much effort, and I felt safer in a hidden place. I fell asleep again curled among a pile of worn, but not dirty, clothes.

2024.05.12 03:09 DragonJawad Recommendations for wireless + full body tracking setup? (Old owner of OG HTC Vive)

Hi all, I bought an original HTC Vive (the one before the Pro iirc) around late 2017 and used off and on, but I wasn't too happy with the wires. Since then, I've been looking into the VR space every couple years or so and today's full wireless headsets are suuuper neat!
But I'm looking for a full body setup so I can freely move and perhaps even dance in VR. And after researching for a while (such as Meta Quest 3 with new Vive Ultimate trackers), I'm a tad bit overwhelmed with the number of options.
Do you have any recommendations on what I should get?
Here are other bits of info:
I've also considered getting the old wireless attachment for my OG HTC Vive but not sure if that is a good idea for quality, availability, or tracking support reasons
Ty for any and all help!
Edit: Looking at the full body tracking wiki, it seems that I need to buy new strap-on trackers one way or another. Thus I'm leaning towards Meta Quest 3 with Vive Ultimate Tracker or Vive Tracker 3.0 as that's the first set of highly talked about options I've been seeing.

2024.05.11 14:45 masoelcaveman Knuckles float away when paired to dongles vs Index Headset

I'm struggling to get my Knuckles to play nice with my Quest 3 whenever I use SteamVR Dongles.
If my Knuckles are paired to my Index I can play using my Quest 3 + Knuckles flawlessly, but I cannot get those SteamVR Dongles to behave nice with my Knuckles. They work well for the most part, but as soon as I have the 2 Knuckles touching each other or just resting with my hands together they completely lose tracking and fly away from one another until I keep the controllers seperated for a while.
I've tried moving the dongles all over the place, with very little change in results. I also use Vive 3.0 Trackers for FBT with their respective dongles and they work just fine. Perhaps I'd have better luck with the Tundra Labs SteamVR Dongle instead? Or maybe their Super Wireless Dongles?
Any tips to fix this terrible tracking issue would be great! I don't want to always have to pair my Knuckles to my Index when using my Quest 3, but I will if I have to

2024.05.11 04:57 --Murphys--law-- Xiaomi TV box s 2nd Gen - Gamestream Mouse and keyboard input lag

Hello everybody. Few days ago got my first Xaiomi TV box s 2nd Gen. I have LG TV + PC with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Super and want to use TV for streaming games from another room where my PC is located. I installed Moonlight app and Steamlink app at Xiaomi TV box (same clients at my PC), made all settings for NVIDIA GeForce Experience, then:
  1. I connected to XIaomi tv box my wireless mouse (not bluetooth mouse) - inserted mouse USB adapter at single USB port at TV box.
  2. Paired my bluetooth keyboard with TV box.
Launched Halo 1 (shooter) and Carmageddon: Max Damage (race) for tests and found that streaming is pretty good via Moonlight (Steamlink also ok but a bit worse), but there is random input lag for 1-2 secs and this is absolutely unplayable!
Then i inserted mouse USB adapter directly into my PC and paired bluetooth keyboard with PC too, started stream via Moonlight and there is no input lag at all!
Why does this happen and how to fix it?
As i know a lot of people use wireless game controllers (i like classic keyboard+mouse :) ) with this Mi box and i didn't found any information about my problem, am i doing something wrong?
So everybody streaming games at TV using Xiaomi box connecting wireless mouse/keyboard to PC, not to TV box? What about people who live at 2 floor buildings with PC at 1st floor and TV at 2nd floor?

2024.05.09 12:50 Beneficial-Stage-993 Tether iPhones to Linux

Just for the record.
Reccently i found that i can tether my iphone's network to my ubuntu instead of using wireless hotspot.
Here is how.
  1. Make sure your ubuntu have `libimobiledevice6`, `usbmuxd` installed. (On ubuntu 24.04, those packs have been installed by default.)
  2. connect your iphone to ubuntu with usb cable.
  3. Make sure `usbmuxd` service is running. `systemctl status usbmuxd.service`
  4. Your iphone should prompt with message asking you trust new device. (do this first)
  5. Your ubuntu should prompt with message asking you trust a untrust device. (click try again)
  6. Go iphone Settings > Personal Hotspot , enable Allow Others to Join.
  7. Now you should see a new Ethernet connect is alive on ubuntu.
That's all. If any problems, just try restart the `usbmuxd` service with `sudo systemctl restart usbmuxd`

I currently have a pair of soundcore liberty pro 3's that I used to use for wireless on the go stuff, and I have an ifi go blu paired with my Moondrop Blessing 3's and Salnotes Zero 2 that I use for "wireless" listening currently when I don't want to be tethered.
My situation is I'm looking at the airpods pro 2 more for the mic quality as they would be used for taking work calls (tech support customer service field) without the need to use my phone as I can run the call routing through my macbook or pc. Due to some health issues, I'm working more from my macbook at the moment but having to juggle a phone vs using a wireless solution isn't ideal for when I can't be at my main pc during the day.
I'm considering using my soundcore liberty 3's for general stuff when I have to work from my macbook and was wondering would there be a huge difference in the mic quality vs the airpods in a situation where I might be outdoors with a bit of background noise and wind. I also do listen to music and watch some videos during downtime, so I feel that the liberty 3's probably beat the airpods for quality on my end, but it's more of a concern of when I'm talking to customers, would the airpod pro 2's provide a better experience to them in your opinion vs the liberty 3?
Also is there a noticeable difference in music quality (apple music over bluetooth) or would it be more of a sidegrade there? This of course for the purposes of what I'm looking to do is secondary as when I'm not on call, I would obviously be using my higher end iems.
Appreciate the help in advance!

2024.05.08 14:35 White_Ring Best VR Headsets To Buy

Hi all, I was scrolling some subreddits like VRGaming and virtualreality, A lot of people there were struggling to find the best VR headset. So, I decided to create a list of best VRs. I did a lot of research, read a lot of reviews and discussions by users and experts too. After reading all that for days this is the list I've come up with:
  1. Meta Quest 3 (best overall)
  2. Valve Index (best for steam)
  3. Meta Quest 2 (best budget)
  4. PlayStation VR 2 (best for ps5)

Meta Quest 3

The best VR right now is Meta Quest 3. It has new lenses, a more compact design, higher resolution panels, and more processing power.
This headset uses slimmer pancake lenses, instead of the chunkier Fresnel ones, which help slim down the whole unit. It doesn't stick out from your face as much, so it's comfier to wear, though the included fabric strap is still poor and we recommend that you replace it for something better.

Valve Index

Valve's headset isn't as cutting-edge as it was when it debuted in 2020, but its Steam VR and Vive hardware compatibility, excellent audio and fancy controllers still make it hardware worth considering. Valve's "knuckle" controllers are pressure-sensitive and can track all five fingers, making them almost like gloves. Not all apps make the most of them, but Valve's hardware is mix-and-match compatible with the HTC Vive, which also is built on the Steam VR platform. The Index headset has excellent audio, but its display resolution is no longer as good as competitors'.

Meta Quest 2

If you're after the best budget VR headset, then look no further than the Meta Quest 2. While it has been surpassed by the newer Quest 3 in terms of comfort and quality of life, you really can't beat this for the money. Not only is it a great way to try out VR for the first time, the Quest 2 offers a super virtual reality experience full stop.
Part of this is down to the 1832 x 1920 resolution LCD panels, which are exceptionally good for a budget headset, though you do need to spend time adjusting the Quest 2 so that your eyes line up with the dead center of the Fresnel lenses. These are a little on the chunky side, so the headset isn't as svelte as the Quest 3.

PlayStation VR 2

The PSVR 2 is expensive ($550), and needs a PlayStation 5 to even work. It's tethered, not wireless. Its HDR OLED display, graphics quality, built-in eye tracking and fantastic advanced controllers -- which have the same vibrations and adaptive force-feedback triggers as the PS5 DualSense controllers -- give this headset a premium feel that makes its best games perform at a different level. It could be a landing spot for top PC VR games, but right now it already has some exclusives like Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village and Horizon: Call of the Mountain.

2024.05.08 12:36 cassgreen_ Linux VR gaming, here it comes

SteamVR: Fixed a bug where compatibility mode would fail for certain controller / HMD combinations and legacy input titles. This release has an experimental feature allowing overlays to use controller simulation in bindings. Disabled AMD Wireless VR driver by default. You can reenable it under startup/shutdown manage addons. This is a wireless driver installed by the AMD GPU driver that can interfere with some new, asynchronous paths in SteamVR. Detect when AMD drivers were installed, but no AMD card is present, preventing "Error 309" and other crashes when loading LiquidVR. Fixed some localization issues in the binding UI. Fixing missing haptic component in some vive tracker profiles. Fixing some scenarios where the menu button didn't work on HTC wrist trackers. Add ability for Vive tracker haptic pogo pins to be bound. Steam Link: Steam VR 2.5 release corresponds to Steam Link client version 2.0.8.748 Improved prediction for increased lateral tracking stability. Fix initialization issue causing connection failure. Requires client and server to both be updated. Fix issue causing persistent failure when headset goes into standby and returns. Fix deadlock on host when USB devices are inserted or removed. Resolved two client crashes. Fix an issue with video encoder initialization on certain AMD integrated GPUs. OpenXR: Fix Vive tracker menu pogo pin not being mapped correctly for OpenXR apps. Linux: Add support for direct mode drivers (IVRDriverDirectModeComponent) on Linux. Improved launch scripts and log capture for bug reports. Fixed random colors appearing at the periphery of the right eye's viewable area. Fixed SteamVR Home launch script. Fixed an SDL compatibility problem on Fedora.
SteamVR 2.5 released with multiple Linux fixes - GoL

2024.05.08 08:43 DrSpockUSS Ethernet backhaul not working anymore?

I have tplink c86 as main router in my house and i used one c80, 3 c6 routers to extend the range all over my house, all hardwired with cat 6 cable, connected by easy mesh, same id and same password. Yesterday i added another lan connection to one of my router for a homekit device and since then one of my c6 has disconnected itself from ethernet backhaul. Its wirelessly connecting to my main router and thus less speeds now.
As of now i can still see 4 devices in my easymesh tab on tether app but only 3 show ethernet icon, remaining one shows wireless icon now, earlier it used to show Ethernet icon as well. All routers have updated firmware, anyway to correct it?

2024.05.06 19:25 WrestlePig Looking to learn about workflows from Photojournalists

I am a pretty decently experienced photographer who’s been shooting professionally for around 10 years. Most of my past experience however has come in the form of studio fashion shoots tethered to a computer, or jobs where there a time after the shoot to cull and edit properly. I am used to having multiple rounds of back and forth with clients over selects.
Recently I have found myself shooting more photojournalism work and finding it very freeing compared to I am used to. My only issue is trying to adapt to a faster workflow which priorities speed of delivery rather than getting a perfect file.
I want to hear from other people shooting in the field where time is important (Olympics, Sports, Film festivals etc) about the best way to get my images on the wire. I have some experience with Photo Mechanic, but I am more used to using Capture One and taking my time.
From my research so far it seems like I’m going to be best served by “protecting” files in camera, only uploading those and doing a quick cull in PM before uploading to the wire.
What are some of the best ways to do this, are their good wireless options these days, or am I best shooting to card , hot swapping and uploading in the field with a personal wifi box? I’m currently running a D3 and a Z8 as my wide and tight bodies.
Thanks in advance for any help!
