2024.05.14 20:47 Relevant-Safety-2699 Mk 2 Rifles Information

Mk 2 Rifles Information
I'm seeing some confusion and unintentional misinformation in the sub about the Navy's Mk2 Mod0 and Mk2 Mod1 rifles. A great resource is Canfield's tome, The M1 Garand Rifle. If you are a Garand owner, this is your bible. Canfield covers these rifles starting on page 577.
Also, we are fortunate that the Garand Collector's Association has posted three articles about these interesting Navy rifles apparently to correspond with the CMP's current sale of these rifles acquired from the Navy's Crane Surface Warfare Center. https://thegca.org/featured-article/
Many buyers, including myself, are finding that a lot of these rifles are WW2 vintage, and appear to have seen little use before their conversion to 7.62 Nato in the mid 1960's, with many original parts like lockbar sights, uncut op rods, original finishes and cartouched stocks. These rifles appear to have had fewer trips to armorers for replacement parts than those used by the ground combat branches, so some of them have a time-capsule-like quality.
Moreover, what makes them even more interesting for collectors of military history, is that they were modified as part of larger historical military events: the change of our primary caliber of 30.06 to 7.62 NATO.
And as the barrels on the Mod1's gauge beautifully, it appears they saw little use since their conversion 60 years ago, so they are time capsules in that sense as well. Many of them still gauge 1/1. I've even seen some zeros, which is basically a new barrel (from 1965!), so they will also make terrific shooters, and in a readily available and inexpensive (compared to 30.06) caliber. This is a really interesting release.

2024.05.14 20:30 Wild_Cellist9861 Gamers Break Away [GBA]

My fellow gamers, for too long has our community suffered the indignation of an intolerable culture that has denigrated, besmirched, exploited, and has outright demonized our culture of unique individuals with a genuine love of a hobby that they see as profitable and progressive. They have taken beloved IP’s (Intellectual Properties) and twisted them into their own personal ideological crusade of undermining and humiliating the core aspects of characters they deemed as “Toxic” or “White Supremacy”. Through the guise and protection of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity) & ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) they have used our influence in the entertainment industry to push their narratives and agendas that have stigmatized our culture with numerous anti-consumer practices that they call “being progressive”. But the truth of the matter is they were never really looking to be a part of our community, they simply wanted to use our community as a tool of activism and propaganda in the entertainment industry as it was extremely profitable, and they wanted inclusion in that division. Ever since GamerGate & Female Frequency, we have had to endure the incursion of forced ideologies, xenophobic behaviors and inferior overpriced products that have never been in our best interest and have been flat out disgraceful towards foreign media.
Before Gaming had become a major source of entertainment, we were often categorized as anti-social or societies rejects where because we found more enjoyment in playing fictional characters and not spending as much time out and about, we never fully assimilated in society (which is a good thing if you ask me). From 1998 to 2007, at the height of innovation, creativity and production, Gaming had reached a golden age in which it had revolutionized society. Hollywood Execs who had ruined the movie industry turned their attention to video games as a source of income since video games had outperformed movies in terms of profit. No one was concerned about gaming, much less diversity or inclusivity until it became profitable. This makes people like SBI look extremely disingenuous as they were not interested in gamers as a community with its own culture. They simply wanted to use it as another weapon in identity politics.
Microtransactions; the hidden enemy to gamer progress and inducer to mental laziness of our community. Microtransactions have been around for a long time; however, it has never been more potent and apparent than in recent years. It has aided in the dismantling and segregation of players on the ideology of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and has created another sub-culture of gamers who have no real drive to be better outside of how much money they put into the game. This has degraded our culture as well as we have become “fat” off transactional gaming but at the same time we have been “starved” of purposeful gaming where our achievements were our sustenance. I am not saying that microtransactions are bad, but when they are exploitative and predatorial like they have been and don’t give gamers room to grow, we become lethargic and unwilling to improve ourselves as gamers. Oversaturated microtransactional games are one of the many reasons why we have become complacent and unwilling to fight against the exploitative tactics used by big brand game companies such EA, Ubisoft, ActivisionBlizzard, NaughtyDog and so many other western business model companies. Western style games were not like this in the past, they had much more depth and actual effort put into them with the gamer in mind. This has not been the case for over a decade and our connection to western developers has been whittled down to just being transactional. That is one of the reasons why you see so many remasters and remakes in today’s gamer community. They have lost their willingness to improve as developers of games and simply accept corporate/share holder rules.
Game journalists also do not have any real integrity or purpose outside of being funded for their involvement in promoting IPG (Identity Political Games) in a positive light to the public whether it’s positively received or not. They are not interested in what we have to say, they all support the same agenda and that is why they are a dying breed. Within the next couple of years, they will be out of the job and more than likely they will not be able to stay in the industry giving how they have responded to past articles that have clearly been scripted on the premise of diversity and racism. Not only that, but most of them are also extremely hostile to the community as they stereotype and defame the individuals that are a part of the community they are supposed to serve. We have been mentally liberated from their lies and coercive tactics as we tend to laugh at their obvious attempt at virtue signaling while hiding their misdoings so that they can play the victim.
My gamer brothers & sisters, I would not suggest the following action that we must take now without good cause. I have weighed our options and the best option for us now is this…...CULTURAL SECESSION. Naturally this is a form of segregation where they would more than likely claim they are being segregated by the dominant culture of the gaming community but that is incorrect. For years now we have been the ones who are often marginalized and ostracized for the smaller portion of our community. And when we aren’t, we’re exploited for more funds so that these companies can stay in business only to subject us to low quality products that coincide with the “WOKE Agenda” that are often huge expenses to these big brands i.e. AAA/AAAA games that will eventually flop for its obvious forced diversity and bug infested product which will undoubtedly piss off the consumer to the point of wanting a refund. Losing copious amounts of capital and stock in the process, not to mention their reputation is permanently marred.
We must separate on every cultural level in terms of entertainment and ideology. We must reject everything from the west that promotes toxic western beliefs, practices, and exclusion from other cultures (i.e. Southeastern Countries such as Japan and Korea). Japan & Korea have been the targets of unjust discrimination from Western Developers, Western Journalists, Western Localizers (The Wokelizers) and Western Society Prejudice regarding their sense of aesthetics as Westerners hate the aesthetic sense of these countries. The reason why they resort to such base tactics isn’t just because it weaponizes the ideal female form but it’s also because they have deep-seated insecurities about their own looks so when they see attractive female characters, they use terms such as “unrealistic” or “hypersexualized” to establish the moral high ground. But the truth is, they want to feel superior to that which is ideal, so they insult and dehumanize this figure that portrays natural female beauty because they see it as an insult to their own social superiority in what they believe is a hierarchy of them being at the top of all other women. Because of this and so many contributing factors, their movies flop harder than the Fat Chocobo landing on a group of enemies and their games seismically fail just as much if not more. We must sever our connection to Western Developers, Publishers, and ALL Western-Centric Entertainment for they seek to mentally enslave us to their Xenophobic ideology.
Let’s define Western Culture and its traits. Western Culture/Society is composed of more than several different ideologies that work in unison with one another to facilitate dominance over multiple aspects of society. Business, Social, Political, Technological, and sometimes even Global Affairs are affected by these ideologies that portray a specific mindset of Western beliefs. What are those ideologies you ask?

These traits are so nefarious and unconscionable that I have a hard time believing that anyone could harbor them. However, given the social, political, and economic climate that we are in, those in power who use their influence on controlling society most definitely possess these insidious traits. Everything that they do is all about control and since video games are the biggest market in the world, they want control over it and the communities built around it to accrue more wealth and to use that wealth to subjugate other cultures. Mainstream media is a tool as well as mainstream organizations and sites to help accomplish this goal.
The government recently announced its intentions towards what they believe is “GamerGate 2.0” and now even the ADL has made an official appearance, referring to gamers as “extremist’s”. We know EXACTLY what they are doing, and they aren’t even trying to hide it anymore because they don’t think we are aware of their motives. This is just a pretext for them to exert even more control and we know why, it’s because they want the influence we as a community have to must serve them. So here is what we do my fellow gamers-
“In light of recent events and years of mainstream stigma, we the members of the Global Gaming Community [GGC] must officially renounce ALL TIES to the corporate western video game market. We have been financially exploited through predatorial monetization schemes, pelted with numerous articles of disdain and intentional misrepresentation from game journalists, news outlets regarding us as dangerous individuals and, even subjected to inferior products not only riddled with bugs but also products meant to push political agendas. For the preservation of our community and its unique culture, apart from a few select game development studios we officially sever all connections to western owned video game companies & their mainstream affiliates. From this point onward, we will no longer support western corporate developers, journalists and publishers that do not coincide with the goals of our community.”
Naturally this is completely optional. If you are okay with the state of the gaming community as it is, feel free to ignore this. But if you wish for real change and a break away from oversaturated monetization in the games you play and the push for radical ideological reform, then you are in the right place. Lets sever these rotted miasmic ties once and for all so that our community can be preserved and made better for future gamers. If you agree with this, share it with whoever you think might be interested. The more gamers who get involved, the easier it will be for us to finally break free from mainstream game companies and their associates.

2024.05.14 20:28 moediggity3 Benefits to getting two cars from same dealership (one lease, one purchase)?

Question for the sales team.
I find myself in need of two vehicles. We have two Jeep products that are approaching 100k miles each. One is long paid off, one has like $10k left on the note.
We want to get into two Toyotas, likely a Grand Highlander for family travel and to be used locally, and either a Venza or a RAV4 Hybrid for my commute, which is about 45 miles round trip 4 days per week.
We’re thinking about trading in a 2017 Grand Cherokee (90k miles) and a 2015 Cherokee (100k miles) and leasing the G. Highlander and buying the Venza or RAV4.
Just a couple general questions, if I came in with that set of facts, is a dealership playing ball? I’m sure it’s enticing to sell two cars to the same person in parallel transactions to a degree where financial concessions could be made, but does the same hold true if one is a lease? Does the fact that I’d be trading in two high mileage cars for this deal help or hurt the overall process?
Been a while since I bought a car, any insight would be helpful!

2024.05.14 20:00 Vir-victus The Corruption of East India Company Officers

East India Company Servants and Officer alike were notorious for engaging in Corruption and dubious business of any sorts in Colonial India. We have covered examples of people like Sir Edward Winter, who was forced to resign over allegations and suspicions of illegal trading, nepotism and corruption. It was in no small part due to people like him and their schemes, that the Company eventually plunged into debt and financial disaster it could never recover from - and if it not had been for the intervention of the British state in the late 18th century and onwards, British India might have collapsed.
Company Officers of the Indian Army were known to venture to India and enlist in the Companys military service due to the prospects and perspectives of making an 'easy' fortune in India. How would they go about that, you might ask. There were several ways for an officer of the Companys army to make money, some of which shall be featured and are the reason this post was made and is centered around.
Company Officers received as a salary what is called 'batta', mostly described as a compensation of expenses and for the cost of living. In the three different presidencies of British India, each had its own Governor, Ruling Council, its own army and finances, and thus also - different wages and salaries for its troops. Several of the earlier posts featured Robert Clive, who was sent back to India in the 1760s to deal with a mutinous group of almost 200 European Officers of the Bengal army, who had refused to accept a pay cut. At this point in time, the Officers of the Bengal army received a salary of two batta, which was double or even quadruple the amount of what their colleagues in Madras and Bombay earned, as their salaries were then at one and 0.5 batta.
Other notable ways for such Officers to make money include 'plunder money', when a fort or a town was sacked and captured, officers would receive a share in the prize and loot money, although this share was fairly small compared to their higher-ups and superior officers and commanders. To 'compensate' this, they often used their role in logistics - to buy supplies for their troops - to fill their own pockets. Such officers would receive money to locally buy supplies such as food for their troops, and sometimes the officers decided to buy products of lower quality or less of it, and keep the surplus money for themselves. Similarly, they also received military funds to put up regiments that didnt exist - they drew money, rations and pay from the Companys wealth for Regiments that only marched on paper.
Last but not least - although it is the most obvious method and was teasered in the opening paragraph - Company Officers regularly took Bribes and engaged in private trade activities. Despite efforts by Robert Clive in the mid 18th century and Parliament interventions outlawing private trade of Company Agents with the successive Parliament Acts from 1773 onwards, Corruption was only mitigated, but never fully gotten rid off.

2024.05.14 19:57 eddiekins [UK] [H] TGR 910 Blush Pink, HE Kage SE Titan Grey (WKL), Machina Orbit65 [W] PayPal

Timestamp
I would like to sell various unused boards that will never see use, all price for less than what I paid to buy them new (or second hand in case of the 910).
Postage not included, willing to ship worldwide (estimated ~£20 to Europe, ~£45 to North America). Pay via PayPal Goods & Services, in £ GBP. I've provided conversions to USD for convenience, but please note postage would add to these numbers.

TGR 910 V2 Valentine's Edition (Blush Pink & Silver Backplate) - £550 ($690)

Purchased second-hand, only one owner prior to me. Like-new, "almost perfect" condition. Includes some extras (as much as I had; o-ring, gasket tabs, two stickers) and authentication card which matches case badge.
One brand new solder PCB is included, not in an anti-static bag but tested and working. Default PC plate and one extra POM plate. I did not receieve a Monokei cleaning cloth when I bought it. Some tiny scuffs to the anodisation of the bottom case (see photo album above), but all of these marks are impossible to see once built. It is in externally perfect condition, hence "almost perfect."

Hand Engineering x Monokei Kage SE (Titan Grey) - £450 ($565)

Titan Grey SE is the upgraded edition, CNC milled from smoky polycarbonate. Brand new, disassembled and reassembled once. No stress marks in the top! Includes all extras (o-ring, gasket tabs, cleaning cloth, sticker pack) and authentication card. One brand new solder PCB is included, unsealed to test and it does work.
I purchased this as "B+ stock" from Mekibo but the only damage is some very, very, very slight discolouration to the copper weight on the bottom that's only visible under direct light and is invisible in normal use. All parts are still in their plastic.

Machina Orbit65 (Moonlit / Aluminium / Solder) - £425 ($535)

Base configuration, not all-brass/copper bottom. Includes a second solder PCB in addition to the first, and the foams (case/plate) kit. Typing angle 7°. Front height 17mm. Tadpole mount. Screwless exterior. Embossed carry case with branded zippers. In my opinion this is a really comfortable and pleasant 65% but it's just surplus to my requirements. More details and renders in link above.
Brand new in box, A stock. All parts present and in perfect condition. Sale price is already less than my GB cost!
Please click here to send me a PM, I don't always see Reddit Chat messages.

2024.05.14 19:50 Character_Air_8660 Since WHEN does driving a white vehicle mean you're a MILLIONAIRE???...

With the exception of the brothers' green Toyota Tacoma TRD Crew Cab and their old Subaru CrossTrek Limited(and Gentry's blue Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 passenger van), every family vehicle has been white...
Where did Betsy get this harebrained idea that white means 🤑$🤑$🤑$???...
She's NOT Lisa Vanderpump(or Donald Trump, thank goodness) in any manner!!!...
And forcing the brothers to trade in their CrossTrek Limited for the 4Runner just because it's white(and upsetting their godfather[?]/Gentry's childhood friend/general sales manager at Nate Wade Subaru Brock Kassing)😒🤦☹...
Totally "delulu", Betsy...
Remember, just before they moved to Tennessee, Gentry tried to force the brothers to buy a white Chevy Colorado ZR1 4x4 to replace the CrossTrek Limited, but Brock put his foot down and said "NO!"...
After the move, he drove them to Toyota of Franklin to buy what HE thought they wanted:a new Tundra TRD Pro Crew Cab, but they fell in love with the Tacoma TRD Pro...
He HATED it BECAUSE it's "Army Green Metallic" instead of white...
"How will THAT look in public???...your mom's social media image will be ruined by this POC!!!"...but eventually, he learned that "saving face" doesn't matter in McMinnville...plus it ran great, had decent gas mileage, so a few months ago, he bought a Tundra TRD Pro Crew Cab...
Sounds like something out of AsianParentStories...
Really, it's not like Henry Ford and his Model T:"you can have any color, as long as it's black"...
🤦🙄...

2024.05.14 19:36 IAMKAH I just road my Cannondale Trial 6 from Santa Monica to Oceanside!!

That’s 60ish miles a day for 4 days counting sight seeing. Best part of the trip was the unknown! Worst part was when my rear wheel rack broke with a way to heavy bag to carry. Although I think it was meant to be cuz it happened just as I was entering Dana point, before that was a loooong stretch of nothing. There were four bike shops in like a mile of this little town. First two had nothing that would fit, it’s a bigger than normal bike. Im now standing in this strange town, trying to navigate this super heavy bag leaning on my seat as I hug it with one hand and steering the bike with the other barely able to walk cuz the bag keeps trying to fall off.. I decided to call the third shop to ask about their racks. Knowing I might have to scrap the trip and rent a SUV or pickup truck and drive my bike home. Third shop said they only had e-bike racks. Iv been wanting one of those but could never find one that fits. Well the guy explained their rack probably wouldn’t fit cuz they custom orders their bike frames at a different size than most. And of course they need to them have a rack custom made to fit. And the guy insisted it would not fit. Well I had a feeling, or maybe I heard something in his voice..I decided I was going to pass by and take a look. Well it just so happened that the size they order is a perfect fit for my bike! But, he looks and didn’t have any more in the back. It took some convincing and an extra 20 buck fee but I got him to remove a rack from one of his for sale bikes and I was finally on my way!! I was so happy, I got a much stronger rack and avoided something like a thousand bucks to rent a car with a one way drop off. Now well on my way and riding with much more confidence, the old rack would flex and rub my tire when I hit bumps..I was on a beach trail passing through San Clemente, quite a ways from the road, the path was blocked and close from a land slide. So I decided to walk this little dirt path near the Amtrak which quickly turned into solid rocks and water ruts and started getting smaller and close to the tracks. As I’m pushing through, dodging the occasional train and fighting the weight of my rig as it’s bumping and jumping all over the place from the uneven rocky slope bordering the tracks, I can’t help but realize how fortunate I was they all this happened the way it did and my rack broke exactly when it did. Otherwise I t most certainly would have broken on the rocks. And I would have been in a much worse situation! In conclusion after riding the I-5 fwy for about 7 miles cuz the military base wouldn’t let me pass their sacred lands…I made it to Oceanside!!! Final thoughts, I was surprised at how many people were screaming at me and talking smack and saying things like no bikes here! And get off the road! and even getting way to close to me. I’m not the guy that rides in the lane, if there’s no bike lane I’m either on the sidewalk or clearly in the parking lane trying not to “get doored”. I never imagined the costal roads were so bicycle intolerant. Iv always thought the coast areas were all about touring and bike riding. I had bought a mirror for the first time ever and I’m happy I did. It seemed that when people would see me looking at them in my mirror they would be more cordial and give me space. I guess bullies don’t like to be seen and only act from the shadows. That being said it was an amazing trip! I’m so proud of my body for not giving up and so fortunate to have just right amount of luck at just the right time! Next I’ll be riding to my favorite place in the world and where I hope to retire and die, Solvang Ca.
I don’t use social media and am to awkward to really have friends..I thought someone other than my mom should know my tale.
Ride on!!!!

2024.05.14 19:36 Whole_Secretary_2999 Can’t renew truck registration because of missing information on title

So we bought a truck in 2020 from a large dealership in Texas. I have successfully renewed my registration for 3 years in a row in the state of Tennessee. However, I am military and was deployed when my registration expired in October 2023. I got back from deployment and immediately tried to renew this April 2024. However, they will not let me renew the truck because of missing information on the title. Apparently, when the truck was sold from the original owner to the dealership, the seller did not sign or date the title. The DMV replied in writing saying this needed to be fixed by the dealership. When I called the dealership, they claimed there is nothing they can do because it was a wire to wire transaction during COVID? I am very frustrated at this situation because I do not have current registration and do not have another vehicle to drive in the meantime, nor can I afford one as I am still paying this truck off. What are my options here? Do I need a lawyer? Any insight is appreciated.

Thank you Ethan on behalf of Furries! Here’s some more information on the world of Furry:
I’ve been a long time member of the H3 podcast and was very excited to see Friday’s show talk about Furries! I just visited FWA (Furry Weekend Atlanta) and there were a whopping 15,000 attendees! I am a toy designer who works on Squishmallows/Pokemon/Disney/etc. and Hila has been a huge art inspiration for me.
I ran into a LOT of people repping Teddy Fresh at the convention. If you ever want to collab with any furry traditional artists like Tess Garmen (Animal Art Crimes) for limited edition sales, I know Furries would pay HUGE money for a collection like that.
Most furries are LGBTQ+ and even though there are many degenerates in the community, we are overall just art collectors who celebrate diversity and accepting people who are out of the norm. We are promoters of safe consensual sex and it gets a bad rep in the community because many people look down on sex/sex positivity and LGBTQ+ community.
Furries are proactive and mostly left-leaning, actively call-out and expose anyone who threatens, abuses, scams anyone in the community online and or in person. We love animals but we are NOT attracted to animals. We actively expose and report those who hurt animals. We raise a lot of money for animal charities and even have a lot of other charities for the LGBTQ+ community.
Furries do not think we are animals, we are basically cosplaying our online avatars which we use to conceal our identities! I think people mistake Therian or Otherkin with Furries because there are overlap, but most furries I know are just cosplaying their own unique character or even other anthropomorphic characters (see last photo of Chuck E. Cheese) for the goofs.
For some reason, there are SO many military, IT and medical professionals in the community! I vended this weekend and made $2000 just selling prints and stickers and sketches! There were even an astronaut and pilot who bought from me.
The Coronavirus vaccine was also developed by a furry (@sailorrooscout on Twitter)
So thank you Ethan for using your platform to talk about furries in such a positive way. It means a lot to us who just enjoy living life in a fun way!
I hope others can be open minded here on Reddit too. I’ve gotten so much hate in the past but now have a decent following on TikTok trying to educate people about the furry community since I’ve been in this space since freshman year of college 7 years ago!

2024.05.14 17:35 rolm How to register a project car without paying sales tax on NADA value?

I recently purchased a 1972 vehicle as a project for $225. The car was previously titled in CT and I am a CT resident. The car is every bit a $200 car (body/floors rusted out, barely running). I want to register (or re-title) the car in my name before I begin the project. But the DMV wants to charge me sales tax on the NADA value (over $10,000). I am told my only option is to pay the tax on the NADA value, then appeal the amount. That would be several times the purchase price of the vehicle and I would prefer not to put that much skin in the game before even starting the project.
Does anyone know of a way to avoid over-paying the sales tax like this, and then hope the govt will refund some of it?

2024.05.14 17:11 Hockenstar Jobs!

Need some ideas
Little long here so my apologies up front. I did 20 in the military and got into hvac in my late 30s. Since I have been in the HVAC industry I have only done rack refrigeration and been a chiller technician. I have zero experience with the residential side of the house and to be honest was just more interested in the bigger equipment. With that said my wife and I are on the cusp of some really big changes in our family and the constant road trips just won't work anymore. I don't want to get too deep into the family stuff, but it involves my family growing by multiple additional kids. Well I got a decent offer from a really decent company for an inside sales role. I took the offer, and I am now 6 weeks in. I love the company but can't stand the damn job. I feel like all the HVAC stuff in my head is just going to waste. So... What options are our there that offer some sort of mix of work. Is residential HVAC better if you need to be close to home? Is there any HVAC technician roles where a tech can be close to home for family emergencies yet still allow someone to get their hands dirty? I did do a brief stint as a maintenance guy at a hospital but that shit was straight up trash.

2024.05.14 17:10 StellaZaFella Why are there so many soap companies associated with the military/veterans?

I kept getting ads for Duke Cannon Supply Company soap. I looked into it, and it's one of those brands intended to appeal to men that talks a bunch about the good old days when men knew how to fix things, drank heavily, ate bacon, and went to war.
Some of the soaps are themed around WWII it seems like--the packaging resembles propaganda posters of the time and the soaps have silly names like Naval Diplomacy, Victory, Accomplishment, and Productivity Wins the Day. The company also gives some proceeds of sales to military veterans.
This lead to me looking into other brands of men's soaps. A lot of them lean into this idea of masculinity, and a lot of them also seem to have a connection to the military and veterans: Bravo Sierra, Hero Soap Company, Aviator Natural Skincare, Solid Rock Soap Co., STLR Soap Co., the list is extensive.
There are also brands that aren't as explicitly associated with the military, but might contribute a portion of the sales from a category of products to military/veteran causes.
Is this just a way to connect to masculinity and toughness with a product seen as feminine, or is there another reason for the military association?

2024.05.14 17:00 Mavroks Can my wife and I realistically call it quits and move to Thailand?

My wife and I have been to Thailand a few times, but honestly only to the more tourist centric cities.
We are 34. $130kish in savings. $250k in home equity, and an additional 30k-40k in equity from vehicles. I receive $2200 a month for life from military disability.
I've read a lot online about being able to be comfortable overseas, especially in SE Asia but I'm curious about actual experiences.
We want to move somewhere coastal in SE Asia. We are looking at Thailand or the Philippines. Is it realistic that we can actually retire with this money? We will be selling the home and vehicles and such.
Is there any specific cities or towns we should consider?
Also as to not get bored, is there opprutinines to use my paramedic license to volunteer in any rural health clinics or the like?
Thanks!

2024.05.14 16:57 potatosharkski Looking to get out of my field

As of now, I have a bachelor's in IT, a certification in cybersecurity, and about 2 years of experience on the help desks of a couple large call centers. I truly do not enjoy it whatsoever and would like to do something else with my life. But I don't know where to start. Recruiters frequently reach out to schedule interviews with me, but it's always the same kind of help desk opportunity. I originally got into IT because of a web design course that I took in high school. It was a great creative outlet, and I figured I could make a career out of doing something fun and interesting. But what I've been doing since graduation is neither of those things. I'd like to get out of the field entirely, I think. I'm burned out every day and have to force myself to get up for work in the morning. Literally the only reason I continue to go in is so I can afford to feed my cat. I won't really list every problem I have with it, but I'd like to know if anyone can suggest career paths to me that satisfy a couple basic qualifications, and help me figure out how to get there. Basically, I'm looking for a career path that:
  1. Isn't military service
  2. Isn't intensely social/customer facing (i.e., not sales, tech support, customer service)
  3. Is ideally somewhat creative
  4. If it's not a creative field, I would prefer to head in the exact opposite direction. Like, a job doing the exact same thing every day until the end of time.
  5. I won't starve to death doing it (nor will my beloved cat)
That may be a lot to ask, but I'm open to anything along those lines. I just want to be able to be happy with my work for a change.

2024.05.14 16:56 TheGreatArtichoke Any tips on a pure Split run no mods?

Hey All! I've been playing a very long time now, a couple years and i love this game so much. I've mostly been doing the Teladi, Boron and Terran starts and stuck with those for 1900+ hours now. Thing is, ive been wanting to break out of my comfort zone (massive mining, trade, logistics support for my chosen faction with a military focus solely on defense instead of attack) and try a whole new approach. I think either the Split or maybe the Avarice factions would best fit that. (more leaning the split.)
Any tips out there for making a non modded public beta Split purist run work? I hear their economy is hot garbage as is all of their commercial vehicles and thats normally my bread and butter. I wanted it to be more of an RP run and i was even thinking of siding with Zyarth for a real change of pace but I dont know how im supposed to make it work if their economy doesnt let me build up as fast as say the Terrans. I'd love to hear how you folks have done it if you've ever tried it.

2024.05.14 16:17 BalkanCastevet Review Godzilla Minus One

Set between the end and the imminent post-war Godzilla represented the horrors of this. A war that persists, the catastrophes it entails are alive among the people. There are many beautiful images of destroyed Tokyo and its progressive reconstruction, moving forward, trying to start again but the protagonist Koichi is unable to do so because he lives with ghosts and torments, he has not fulfilled his """"duty"""" of kamikaze, he fled, just as he hesitates and trembles before the first appearance of Godzilla. The human sector is one of the film's strong points, especially because in films of this type it is often its weak point, the war has never ended for Koichi so he is unable to fully enjoy the opportunity of a new life with Noriko to little Akiku. These dynamics could perhaps have been more in-depth, Koichi's internal torment is often told more, however nothing serious especially for a film of this type. There is a lot of Spielberg in Yamazaki's direction, Godzilla's first appearance is reminiscent of Jurassic Park, subjectively I would have liked more construction in Big G's appearance but the effect is to show him directly; in the end the references to Jaws are evident. The destruction of Tokyo by Godzilla works very well with well-constructed dynamics and shots, the one of the train very good as well as the preparation and launch of the kaiju's atomic ray with the subsequent effects. For the budget available the work is very good, the performance of Godzilla is exemplary, the military vehicles may not have a not so perfect performance but never anything so bad for the eyes, the work on the effects is in fact very spot on. As in Honda's film, in Minus One Godzilla embodies desperation and his attacks are aimed at signs of human progress, both technological and lifestyle, such as the iconic train, the theater and the radio station. However, the kaiju will have no qualms about destroying everything. In the mythology not only of Godzillian but also of Japanese, water is very important and it is from here that everything is born, the film in fact begins with water and the color blue is almost always present, the photography always inserts objects or elements that recall the aquatic color even in the interiors of houses and exteriors. Even moments of rain are therefore significant. The destruction of Tokyo and the resulting effects, which are very human and personal for the protagonist, just when he had just laid himself bare with Noriko, therefore perhaps accepting to really live, is the turning point towards a personal revenge against the kaiju. Even though Koichi and Noriko are ashamed of it, they are two survivors of the war, the film emphasizes how orders from above cause death, planes without the possibility of evacuation, kamikazes, war is something imposed from above , by governments. Minus One, unlike many other films about Godzilla, does not show the government's choices in the foreground, the citizens suffer them, the anti-Godzilla cry is in fact a free voluntary action of the population. The logic of dying for the country is rejected but instead one must live and survive to build the future. Therefore the point of view of the story is framed by Koichi and the citizens who have recently seen the war and relive those horrors through Godzilla, there are no torments of Yamane or Serizawa from Honda's film, no one questions whether Godzilla could be studied, there isn't even a scientific etymology of the kaiju, the population is interested in moving forward and the volunteers want to kill the monster for this. The film is very square and also linear, so in the ending, instead of aiming for presumed twists, it would have been better to focus on Koichi's character, involving the viewer in the moment of the definitive choice that completes his narrative arc. In fact, Koichi is dragged into an existence of war, the dream of a possible life with Noriko and Akiku opposed by his revenge and torments. Certainly with a bigger budget the ship sequence in the finale would have been more impactful, but Godzilla works great in the film, his moments are effective both in the destruction of Tokyo and in the sequences at sea. So even the clash at the end with the iconic soundtrack is very good. There is clearly a strong reference to Dunkirk both purely scenic but also for the spirit of free action of citizens, becoming volunteers, it is a film that focuses on the concept of spontaneous organization without the need for government bodies which instead brought death and war .Yamazaki, in addition to Spielberg, also mentions Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah from 2021, the director himself made it explicit, the underwater scenario and Koichi's action in the finale are examples. Most likely Minus One will be the progenitor for a new Japanese saga, I am very happy about it, in conclusion, the film has a well-described human aspect, yes, at times perhaps more told than experienced but in any case the drama is very present as is the destruction and the desperation that war brings, also represented by Godzilla himself; the kaiju works great, his presence is well exploited if in a Godzilla film, this works the film is spot on and successful. Beautiful.
