Do you want to get the most out of your crypto casino plays? Let's explore some effective strategies to maximize your winnings! I'll guide you through an easy-to-follow process to improve your odds and increase your potential payouts.
Remember: Bitcoin casinos, like all casinos, have a house edge, meaning they are designed to be profitable in the long run. While you can't guarantee 100% profitability, this article will provide you with tips to boost your chances of walking away with winnings.

#1 Choose the Right Bitcoin Casino

First and foremost, you don't want to risk losing your funds by depositing on an unverified gambling site. It's crucial to stick to reputable casinos. Reliable review sites can help you make a safe choice. BCGame, Stake, and Bitcasino are among the top-rated companies in the industry, and they are known for their credibility and user-friendly experiences.

#2 Utilize Bonuses and Promotions

Take full advantage of the available bonuses. Begin your journey with deposit bonuses and continue to reap rewards through the loyalty program. This approach ensures a steady stream of bonus funds flowing into your account. You can choose a site that offers your preferred bonus features, maximizing your potential benefits.
Most popular reward types:
  • Generous deposit bonus
  • Weekly and monthly bonuses
  • Cashback
  • Rakeback
  • Dividends

#3 Play High RTP Games

Another strategy to win more frequently at Bitcoin casinos is to play games with a higher RTP (Return to Player). Provably Fair games often offer the lowest house edge. These are developed by the casino itself - such as Plinko, Dice, and Crash. Choosing games with an RTP over 99% minimizes your losses in the long run. In comparison, the average RTP for slot games is around 95%.
BetFury features games with RTP over 99%

#4 Practice Bankroll Management

Utilizing bankroll management is the essential approach. Establish a gambling budget, set betting limits, and resist the urge to chase losses. This approach will help you manage your funds effectively and extend your gameplay, giving you more opportunities to win.
ℹUse these tips and increase your chances of a winning session and higher top wins! What are your approach tricks to win more in crypto casinos?

2024.05.15 14:38 stickalick Overheating i14700K

Mainboard: 1700 ASUS MB ASUS ROG STRIX B760-I GAMING WIFI DDR5 ITX CPU: i14700K GPU: RTX 3070 FE Case: H210 Cooler: NH-U12A Chassis: 4x NF-A12
The CPU idles between 32 - 50 Celcius and goes up to 100 degree Celcius on high load. To counter this issue, I re-applied a better thermal paste, installed 2x NF-A12 at the front and 2x NF-A12 at the top and back of the case. Due to the case's air-flow issues, I removed the front lid to ensure max air intake. Hence, the two front fans push air into the case and the two at the top and back draw air from the system. Overall there should be more than enough air-flow. However, the CPU still manages to thermal throttle.
Within the BIOS I applied following settings:
Undervolt: 0.13 Long run power consumtion: 160W Short run power consumtion: 230W Hyperthreading: Disabled All ASUS related overclocking profiles: Disabled
With that settings I manage to get the CPU down to 85 celcius. However, I would like to (at least) utilize the 253W on a short run without overheating the system. Do you have any advice for me?

2024.05.15 14:37 Friendly-Airline2426 Regarding the proposed comment-to-vote reward system - An opposing argument

As a long time contributor, member, and an investor in the Donut ecosystem, I believe I have the right to express my opinion, regarding the proposed comment2vote program. Please note that it is not my intention to manipulate the public opinion, nor to incentive brigading parties against the concept. This is just a (very much necessary) con-argument, as it seems everyone's just jumping on board without considering all the variables.
I believe we are focusing on the wrong thing.
The new program aims to fight manipulation. Let me say that nothing will change in that regard, as there will always be upvote manipulation. This will still happen, could be on a smaller scale, or not.
Commands such as !tip [X] are still being abused, even though it's on a much smaller scale, with alt accounts engaging in tipping manipulation for the receivers' bonus. Sometimes "evidence" is presented to the moderation team, and allegedly nothing happens. What guarantees the governance that it will be any different with comment-to-vote?
Additionally, I firmly believe this will limit the sub to insiders (as in EthTrader active members; also approved users), at least in terms of tokenized rewards. Only insiders will know about this program, thus limiting outsider users who do not know how the system works.
Plus, the fact that only approved users would be able to upvote, kind of puts away new users or not so active users who casually enjoy to participate in EthTrader.
There is another thing the governance needs to keep in mind. The people who actually upvote in this sub are not the participants, it's the outsiders. When certain keywords are used in threads, the algorithm picks the post up and recommends it to external users. These are the ones who often genuinely engage and upvote. And we'd be penalizing OPs, by not including their upvotes in the distribution score.
I believe every project, individual, or company should focus on finding solutions. But such solutions must not be made "in a hurry".
The comment-to-vote is a rushed mechanism. I have a feeling this is something that is now being actively worked on in a rush, even though it has been under discussion for quite some time. Such a big change for the sub, and its way of functioning, should be, must be, carefully worked on, and in due time. It should not be something that must happen right away, because of external attacks.
I believe this new program will clog comment sections... again! We recently managed to tackle down the tip spamming, by removing incentives to send tips.
Lately, as you can see, comment sections are a lot more cleaner and not full of tips with ridiculous amounts, as little as under 1 single Donut. By implementing this, we would get right back to where we started.
On a not so engaging topic, I guarantee we will see comment sections full of: "[Top comment] !upvote / !uv / !up / !tip -> [Reply] Thank you bronut!".
Outside users, and even EthTrader contributors, found the tip spamming frustrating, because it degraded comment sections. Myself included.
This will happen again, if the program goes live.
One of the pro-arguments is that this will increase visibility, by taking away the financial incentive to downvote. Once more, I disagree.
Downvotes will exist any way, they always did, and always will. This is how Reddit operates. We do not know who downvotes. So even though we remove the financial incentive to downvote, people will do it either way.
No matter if it's EthTrader users or outsiders, the visibility would not be increased. I would say that visibility would be higher, if we had more GENUINE users, and actually expand the content and topic of discussion, not restricting it to a single thing, like we just did.
Look at CryptoCurrency's example. They have been dealing with upvote manipulation on a far larger scale than ethtrader, and it was a lot worse in comments. High quality comments would sit at -2 score. This isn't something that happens in ethtrader.
They always had downvotes, and yet the average mid-quality thread used to have hundreds of upvotes. ethtrader's high quality threads can barely get past 10.
The main suspects are the manipulators who have a financial reason to do the downvoting. I would argue that if the moderation team concentrated some of their efforts to tackle down these users, (PERMA) banning them from the subreddit, the mass downvoting would drastically decrease. Some users understand what I'm talking about here. EthTrader does not have more than 100 genuine, active users. You can bet on that.
Then there's the privacy aspect of the subject. Voting SHOULD BE anonymous. That's how Reddit works.
Even though I'm in favor of a transparent voting mechanism, which would allow us to see who is upvoting who, we are removing a small layer of privacy from users.
Whether it's upvoting or downvoting, (non-malicious) users have the right to keep their votes to themselves. I understand this may sound controversial, believe me I do. But in the event of having a public voting system, there are absolutely no guarantees that manipulators would be taken down.
Plus, what evidence would we have that we don't already have? Our regular users can already identify activity patterns and anomalies in the data.
Another question to address is, if two different users constantly upvote each other, assuming they're both known within the DAO and are obviously two different people who sympathize with each other, would this be manipulation? Manipulation, in this case, would be subject to the moderators' / governance's interpretation.
From a contributor's point of view, I will say this is just extra work. What I mean is people are already super stingy with their upvotes, and the (current) process is as simple as tapping a button.
Adding an extra layer of effort, such as having to type a command, will reduce the changes of OPs getting upvotes. And since the average number of upvotes per thread is already low enough, this would decrease drastically, making it not worth it to spend time creating threads (assuming they're not link submissions).
Most people would not be upvoting, which brings me to the next topic.
As a meme artist, memes are my strong point in this subreddit. It is what I post the most, and it is what earned me my fair share of DONUT-CONTRIB throughout the years as a contributor.
Implementing this system would hurt people like me the most. People who spend hours in a day on photoshop creating a meme, only to me subject to a penalized flair.
I can confirm you that my memes already earn me between 10 to 50 Donuts, rarely more than 50. Under the new system, along with the drastic reduction of upvotes due to the command requirement, I / we would earn a lot less.
Remember, Comedy flairs have a 0.10 multiplier, and according to the (new) Pay2Post fee, we need 25 upvotes to break even. I am willing to bet that we would definitely not be getting 25 upvotes under this new program. I would argue that the highest quality "Hot" thread would get probably a max of 10.
So where does that leave us meme creators? We rely on external interactions to succeed. Most of the upvotes on memes are given by outside users, users that would be out of EthTrader's system, under this new program. Not only that, but this would also drastically decrease earnings for all genuine, active contributors, and would probably make them leave.
This is getting perhaps a bit too long, I'm sorry but there's no short way of sharing this.
I believe this is just a detour in our path, or taking the long road as one would say. Cheaters will stop at nothing, some of them have been farming RCPs for YEARS, possibly relying on it in terms of income. Nothing will stop them and they will always find a way to circumvent any new rule or program.
So this would only really add an extra layer of difficulty for outsiders or new users to participate, whilst benefiting those with "groups of friends".
I want to flush out manipulators as much as the next guy, but this is not the way to do it. This would drastically reduce contributors' earnings, the subreddit's accessibility, and wouldn't be user-friendly at all.
This wouldn't be required if moderation took a more proactive approach towards trying to detect, monitor and PERMABAN manipulators, as these are the ones who have more incentive to downvote, more than any other user. By getting straight to the root of the problem, the mass-downvoting would be largely reduced. Not completely stopped, as it is a natural, organic part of Reddit and they will always exist, but reduced nevertheless.
So what am I trying to achieve with this thread? What do I want?
One simple thing: Time.
I would like to ask the governance for time, before rushing into implementing this new mechanism. We recently passed proposals to reduce spam, and have some on the way to reduce the incentive to cheat as well. Proposals such as a cap of 3 threads per day, per user, removing the tipping bonus for senders. On the way we have the reduction for the Daily's comment rewards, and finally a comment cap per day, per user.
I believe THIS is the way to address foul play, proposal by proposal. Not through some major change that alters the entire way of operating.
I would like to ask the governance for 3 to 6 months, to evaluate how the distribution scores perform, how the ratios fluctuate with these new proposals, before doing this. I am confident that with these new proposals, the general status of the sub will improve, and organic, active users will earn more.

2024.05.15 14:30 Mustasade Unpopular opinion: multiple queens is not taunting, neither is playing to the end

Simple as title. I've read some comments even from flaired people of 1400 rating (top 5% in Chess.com) that moving all your pawns and promoting them in a won end game is "taunting" the losing opponent. With the context obviously referring to online chess. It is not. In over-the-board games it might be considered rude to resign "early" if your opponent truly wants a learning experience from the game, but opting not to resign when your opponent has enough time (say, 15s or more) to get a mate with material on the board might be considered rude as well.
Online this does not matter. I'm all for learning ticks and trips to get a dirty stalemate on the board. But if you honestly think that your opponent with over a minute on the clock, who has two or more queens on the board against your lone king is taunting YOU, you're mistaken. Most humans want to see the number go up. GothamChess wants to see the letters go up from IM to GM. I want to see my number go up, so as soon as I have a winning endgame, I simplify and make as many premoves as I can. I'm already thinking about the next game, what mistakes I clearly did in this game and why I still won. I'm not spending any more brain power than necessary in KQP v K endgame. IF the endgame needs finesse, then it's good to play it to the end to see if you can quickly come up with faster mates.
If you do not respect your own time enough or think that you need to play the game to the end to avoid a tilt, go for it. But if you want to see your number go up, take the L, resign in a lost position and move on to the next game or go through the game to see where your mistake was.

2024.05.15 14:28 Training_Purchase318 How I would improve the IIHF continental Cup

The IIHF continental cup for those who do not know is the 2nd tier of European club competition, for football ⚽️ fans this is like the equivalent of the UEFA Europa League.
The competition currently has a 3 tiered system which has teams from leagues ranging from nations like 🇧🇪🇪🇸🇹🇷🇧🇬🇪🇪🇱🇹🇮🇸 participating in stage one, winner moves onto stage 2 where they take on leagues from 🇸🇮🇮🇹🇭🇺🇷🇸🇭🇷🇫🇷, then to tier 3 where clubs from 🇬🇧🇩🇰🇰🇿🇱🇻🇵🇱 battle eachother till the final group is made up of the top 4 teams in round 3.
In my opinion this system, despite attempting to grow the sport in tier 1 nations that I’m all for. Doesn’t make the continental cup a well respected and competitive competition which is has the potential to be.
So my proposal is to make it a challenger league focused tournament that puts some of the best in Europe’s “challenger nations” (this is the term used for nations in the Champions Hockey League that aren’t expected to perform well like 🇬🇧🇵🇱🇩🇰🇸🇰🇳🇴)
Putting these clubs against eachother would see a much improved attendance, greater engagement with the European hockey community with this tournament and would make it a competition that clubs want and try their hardest to win.
I’d love to hear any thoughts you have on this if you are already following the continental cup or if you’re new to this competition ask questions about it I’d love to hear NA/better euro nations fans thoughts

2024.05.15 14:27 redditisalright12 Unpopular opinions

Shakur Stevenson has what it takes to outpoint Gervonta and Loma. Probably the most “impregnable” young fighter today
Inoue shouldn’t be P4P #1, his victories while many are championship fights, have been against a weaker bantamweight division. Would place Crawford as #1 and Inoue at #3 behind Canelo
Bivol’s win against canelo was a classic example of styles make fights. I do not believe that Bivol reaches anywhere near the level of accomplishments as canelo. Not to mention, he’s extremely overrated and has a glass jaw that hasn’t been cracked yet
Beterbiev is also extremely overrated
Tyson Fury isn’t washed because of that one loss to Ngannou.
Lomachenko has a serious case for being theoretically undefeated with what should have been a draw against Teo and a win against Haney, not to mention that controversial loss earlier on his career.
Lomachenkos most recent fight against kambosos while dominant has showed lots of signs of him slowing down. The biggest factor, being his work rate has significantly declined.
Ali just simply and clearly isn’t the GOAT if we are taking about boxing ability over impact. He’s not even in my all time top 3 P4P

2024.05.15 14:19 Fantastic_Series1207 AITAH for my ratings of a group member?

So I (18F) am in university. In one of my classes you have to do a group project. There are 4 people in the group (names changed ofc), Amy, Sam, Tom and me. We’re all the same age except Sam who’s in his mid 20s. Anyway the project has multiple sections, most of which rely on a section we will call section A. Sam volunteered to do section A. Amy did sections B and C, one of which hinges on section A, Tom (section D) and me (sections F and G) all rely on section A to be completed. Sam says on Wednesday section A will be completed on Saturday. (Project is due on Tuesday). That gives me and Tom ample time to do our sections before Tuesday. So Sunday morning rolls around. No section A. We check in again and again but no section A. In the end section A wasn’t done until midday on Tuesday and we had to scramble to get the project done. Section A should only take ~2-3 hours total to do. My sections are very wordy too so I was super stressed. Now if he had asked for help we would’ve helped him. But nope. On top of that, Sam is also in charge of uploading the assignment. We text him and he says he’ll upload it and it’s all under control. We find out the next morning he uploaded it 5mins late (he had 1hr approx to upload BEFORE it was due) and was very nonchalant about it. This gets 10% docked off the mark and this assignment is worth 20% of our grade for the class. We were angry. Now this is where I may be the butthole.
So we had to rate our group members today. Me and Amy were the only ones who attended class so we saw what we were writing. We both absolutely slammed Sam in our reviews. It won’t do much to him, just take a few marks off his individual mark. I know he wasn’t a good group member but at the same time I feel really really bad for giving him a bad review. I feel like a heartless asshole.
So reddit, AITAH?

2024.05.15 14:19 Dawson81702 Introducing the Realtime Weather Concept: Oil Storms

Introducing the Realtime Weather Concept: Oil Storms

Oil Storm Cycles

What are Oil Storm Cycles?
Not to be confused with Rainmaker's Oil Rain (Sorry, Misty!)
Due to the construction and pollution from the multitude of Cog buildings, the environment of Toontown is adversely affected, leading to altered weather patterns that cause Oil Storms to fall upon Toontown.

What do Oil Storms do?

Effects on Cogs:
  • Hydrates and lubricates Cogs, enhancing their power and productivity.
  • Increases Cog health and damage by 10%.
  • Boosts Cog battle join rates by 50%.*
Effects on Toons:
  • Toons remain unaffected due to their strong will and courage.

What's in it for Toons?

Rewards:
  • 3x Cog Promotion Merits.*
  • Extra Experience Point.*
  • 50% increased chance of obtaining rare Manager Stickers.
  • Potential use in Kudos Manager Boss battles (subject to Toontown team's discretion).

What does an Oil Storm look like?

Visuals:
  • Smog appears over Toontown playgrounds and streets.
  • Darkened skies, playgrounds, and streets, with oil falling from the clouds.
  • Similar to the rain effects from the Rainmaker manager battle and Toontown Rewritten's Bossbot HQ area, so this is already implemented in a way.
Concept Images:
Times are gloomy in Toontown Central..
Now Barnacle Boatyards looking more like a sea port!
Cheer up Toon, The storm will be over soon!
Really adds to the atmosphere, eh?
Wherever the Oil Storm is currently, a large cloud of smog would appear over that playground.
Alternative, with an icon along with the original dynamic cog invasion icon.
Attention all Toons! An Oil Storm is approaching!

How would Oil Storms work?

Implementation Method:
Allowing for dynamic control of the weather, an Oil Storm would be able to happen independently at specific playgrounds and districts at any time, For example: An Oil Storm could be at TTC, DDL, YOTT, BB, while the have none, while in another district it could be the opposite; no two playgrounds are bound to each other!
A way you could allow each playground to work independently is from the formula below.
  • Calculating Cog Building Impact
    • Every 15 minutes, the number of buildings in a playground is calculated to set a percentage value for Oil Storm likelihood.
    • This dynamic implementation is akin to how the Cog tier affects playground invasions in TTCC.
  • Logarithmic Curve Formula:
    • Formula: y = 1 - e^-z(x)
    • Variables:
      • x = Number of Cog Buildings in the playground.
      • y = Percentage chance (0 to 1) of starting an Oil Storm cycle (maximum 60% chance).
      • z = Variable controlling curve steepness (default -0.03).
      • e = Mathematical constant (approx. 2.71828).
  • Process:
    • Every 15 minutes, a number from 1 to 100 is rolled.
    • If the number is ≤ the percentage, Oil Storm occurs; if > the percentage, it doesn’t.
    • Toons in that playground receive a 5-minute warning via a Weather Forecast alert to evacuate or prepare for Oil Storm.
Real-World Test Data (at Midnight Toontown Time):
Anvil Acres and Geyser Gulch were the least populated districts without invasions, and High-Dive Hills was the most popular district with an invasion.
Playground Anvil Acres Geyser Gulch High-Dive Hills
Toontown Central 6 7 1
Barnacle Boatyard 20 20 19
Ye Olde Toontowne 18 18 17
Daffodil Gardens 18 18 17
Mezzo Melodyland 31 31 31
The Brrrgh 30 30 30
Acorn Acres 28 28 28
Drowsy Dreamland 29 30 30
Hmm, I noticed a very distinct pattern here... Anyways, putting these values into the Formula would give a
  • Calculated Maximum Values for Oil Storm Chance:
    • Toontown Central: 19%
    • Barnacle Boatyard: 45%
    • Ye Olde Toontowne: 42%
    • Daffodil Gardens: 42%
    • Mezzo Melodyland: 61%
    • The Brrrgh: 59%
    • Acorn Acres: 57%
    • Drowsy Dreamland: 59%
I think these values are fine as this is for the maximum building values that I encountered which would be rare during peak times, but the z variable can be altered to change the results of each district separately.

Combating Oil Storms

There should be a way that Toons can combat this Hour of Power.. Or Oil Rain.
Toon Strategy:
  • A Toon can combat an Oil Storm by taking over the Cog Buildings and decreasing the Cog Buildings in that playground, this in turn decreases the percentage chance that an Oil Rain cycle happens next cycle.

FAQ

Isn't this just the Rainmaker Oil Rain mechanic?
In the sense that...
While similar, The Oil Storm cycle provides a dynamic weather system to Corporate Clash (or Toontown Rewritten) making the game more immersive, adds lore, and adds more opportunities for different strategies to come into play, perchance. YOU CAN'T JUST SAY PERCHANCE.
Could the game even handle a Dynamic Weather cycle?
I don't know, I'm not a developer or staff member, but what I do know is there are a lot of strong willed people out there that have had the strength and courage to uplift a long gone videogame to bring into the future for not only the people of the past to enjoy what once was, but for newcomers to join and participate in such a wonderful game!
I'm talking to you, TTR and CC staff! \)and smaller servers, no offence meant.\)
Plus, concerning lag and performance issues, If Oil Storm cycles were implemented into the game, it wouldn't come close to the Acorn Acres' Waterfall. (BURN!) (someone call an Ambulance Chaser!)
Wouldn't this just clutter the game more than it is needed?
Perhaps, but with the fine tuning of the Toontown developers this mechanic could become something great! You could even make this an event as a Spring event only!
Here are some reasons why Oil Storm cycles would benefit Toontown:
  • Enhances Gameplay Depth
    • Dynamic Challenges
      • Oil Storm introduces dynamic environmental challenges that keep gameplay fresh and engaging, preventing the experience from becoming monotonous and boring.
    • Strategic Planning
      • Players need to strategize and adapt to changing conditions, which adds a layer of depth and complexity to their gameplay decisions.
  • Offers Meaningful Rewards
    • Increased Incentives
      • The mechanic provides substantial rewards, such as 3x Cog Promotion Merits, extra Experience Points, and a higher chance of rare Manager Stickers, which incentivize players to engage with the new feature.
    • Optional Engagement
      • Toons have the choice to either face the Storm for rewards or avoid it, giving them control over their gameplay experience.
  • Integrates Seamlessly with Existing Mechanics
    • Familiar Visuals
      • The visual effects of Oil Storm are similar to existing weather effects in the game, ensuring consistency and familiarity for players.
    • Proven Mechanics
      • The implementation leverages existing game mechanics (e.g., particle effects from the Rainmaker manager battle), ensuring technical feasibility and reducing the risk of introducing bugs or performance issues.
  • Enhances Game Lore and Immersion
    • Narrative Depth
      • The Oil Storm mechanic ties into the game’s lore, explaining the environmental impact of Cog activities and enriching the game's narrative.
    • Immersive Experience
      • The changing weather conditions add to the immersive experience, making the game world feel more alive and responsive to in-game actions. This would be akin to when they first animated the street props when the silly meter was unveiled long ago.
  • Promotes Player Cooperation and Engagement
    • Community Goals
      • Encourages players to work together to reduce Cog buildings and prevent Oil Storms, fostering a sense of community and shared objectives.
    • New Task Lines
      • The Oil Storm cycle could add new Task lines to the game, increasing playability and rewards for Toons to achieve!
    • Active Participation
      • Keeps players engaged with continuous, time-sensitive goals, motivating them to log in and participate more frequently.
The addition of a weather cycle not only enhances gameplay and visuals, but also incentivizes the player into defeating more Cogs and buildings, enriching the game's lore and offering new challenges and rewards for players.
*Be aware that none of this concept is limited to itself, It is entirely up the the game developers to pick and choose what would be best for addition into the game!
And hey, this isn't limited to Corporate Clash, would anyone like a Space Toontown Server Race? Heheh. I hope I have been clear on my concept and have gotten your attention thus far. Feel free to comment your ideas below.
Thank you all, and have a Toontastic day!

TL;DR: This is just a big excuse to get real time weather cycles into the game.

2024.05.15 14:16 hesteheste On MBB burnout and PTSD

https://brokenmbb.medium.com/the-downfall-of-an-mbb-consult-282140a9d60e
From the fine article:
I am a former management consultant who six months ago decided to leave the firm because of severe stress and signs of burnout. Six months on I am battling severe PTSD and deep depression following the whole downfall. I am currently admitted to a psychiatric ward where I receive sufficient care. For those of you who are unfamiliar with MBB, it refers to McKinsey, BCG, and Bain — the three of the world’s top consulting firms. I started with the MBB firm as a senior hire, which was unheard of at the time. Having previously spent five years at a less prestigious / tier-2 firm, I had to spend a lot of energy and time proving that I was ‘good enough’. One of my first projects was a big ‘transformation project’ for a troubled corporate. The project conditions were insane. One of my team member turned up at work shaking because she had slept on average less than 4 hours per night during the last five days. She was in charge of the financial model, which was incredibly stressful for her. She left shortly thereafter. During the project I received multiple ‘coaching’ lessons in a rather aggressive manner. I wasn’t being 80/20 enough. I was focusing on the wrong things. I wasn’t able to “crack the case” well enough. All the comments were likely fair, but the delivery format was dubious. At one occasion I broke down in front of my boss who just kept giving tense feedback. It was as if I deserved extra treatment because I was the new senior hire and didn’t necessarily know all the right ways of working. The MBB firm liked to talk about ‘homegrown’ vs ‘non-homegrown’ talent. Homegrown talent that had come ‘up through the system’ was rated higher than people like me. Even after five years I was still referred to as an external hire; not ‘homegrown’ talent. My project reviews were generally stellar and I was a high achiever who did my very best to fit in. Still, I just wasn’t homegrown. My downfall last year started with panic attacks due to a very senior client expecting us to have overnight meetings ever two weeks. Meeting start, if lucky, at 11pm and, normally, end around 4.30am. My whole life revolved around this client’s diary and created an immense sense of anxiety because I was expected to prepare contents for these meetings at extremely short notice. Often the partners involved would change their mind last minute, resulting in significant rework and hours wasted on producing the wrong content. An added stress factor was the pressure to keep the project team happy. Every week a survey was run. Junior team members would often use this as an outlet against the leadership team because they were overworked and stressed. So as the project manager I was tasked with the challenge of ‘fixing’ the engagement projects. Most of the issues were out of my control — rude clients, client not making decisions fast enough, boring topics, etc. It was almost impossible to turn around, but it still was my job to be the ‘fun uncle’ for the team and keep scores up. In essence, the pressure was four-fold. Pressure from the client to deliver a good recommendation. Pressure from partners to sell the next engagement. Pressure from the project team to fix all of their issues. And pressure from the family at home to spend more time, travel less, and be present. These four pressures broke me completely. One night I woke up with severe panic attacks because I knew I had one of these all-nighter meetings coming up, but I didn’t know when. Out of frustration I hammered my hand into the wall multiple times. The next morning I notified my manager that I had severe panic attacks. He told me to rest up. After ongoing discussion with my psychiatrist, I got my psychiatrist to send a letter to my employer, asking them to reduce my workload for a period of of time. This is what common practice in most European countries. This request didn’t go down well. As a consequence, I was pulled into a meeting by my supervisor who asked me when I would get better: “What’s your timeframe? When will you be better? We need to know now.” Of course I had no idea: It is really a question of how long is a piece of string. It depends on how well I can manage my symptoms and anxiety I was experiencing from the stressful work conditions. Shortly thereafter, I decided to resign because I couldn’t withstand the pressure anymore. They gave me six months paid leave to find a new role, which I have done. Fact of the matter is that working with an MBB ruined large parts of my life. I have been given the diagnosis PTSD following the downfall last year and how I was treated. I now suffer from severe depression and I have no confidence in my own ability to undertake complex or stressful work. More to come.

2024.05.15 14:14 Thaddaus26 Some Holy Priest Rework Ideas

Holy priests are arguably one of the more boring healers in Warcraft to the point that people often refer to them as the ‘default’ healer. I’m sure there are more deep, underlying issues that Holy has but I wanted to try tackling them on a purely thematic level with some minor thoughts on a more gameplay-oriented level.
I aim to make more interesting spells that interact in a fun way that gives the holy spec a little more flavor than, “The default RPG healer”.
Quick preemptive self-defense though. This is all in good fun and purely theoretical. It’s always been interesting for me to speculate what a class or spec could be and rather than hoarding it all to myself, I thought it would be more interesting to see some other people's opinions and possibly inspire others to do the same. With that said...
Some of Holy’s biggest cooldowns are Divine Hymn and Hymn of Hope (Renamed to Symbol of Hope now). Singing to help your allies. You’ll notice other spells in the toolkit like shadow WORD pain and power WORD shield. Shadow has a spell called SILENCE for god’s sake. Basically, the implication is that priests are using their voices to channel their spells somehow. Why not...do more of that? Because I can’t lie, having several spells named “Heal” with different variations is killing me inside.
Plus, a bunch of the talent node names already lean into this! A few notable examples are:
Voice of Harmony
Healing Chorus
Gales of Song
Divine Word
Resonant Words
All the Holy Word Spells
Let’s make it so Holy is all about literally singing the Light’s praises. After all, if Shadow and Holy are canonically on two ends of the spectrum with Discipline being the proverbial middle ground, let’s really have Holy Priest’s be truly ‘Devout Feeling’ with their spell names. Double points if the spells end with a sung note or maybe a little arpeggio of a harp or something.
Let’s go through a few examples I’ve thought of and any non-obvious reasons behind each decision.
“Heal” -> “Holy Solo”
“Flash Heal” -> “Divine Etude” (An Etude is a short music piece)
“Prayer of Healing” -> “Holy Motet” (A motet is mainly a vocal musical composition, the name describes the movement of the different voices against one another)
“Circle of Healing” -> “Sacred Cantata” (A Cantata, (from Italian cantare, “to sing”), originally, a musical composition intended to be sung, as opposed to a sonata, a composition played instrumentally)
“Renew” -> “Grace Note” (An extra note added as an embellishment and not essential to the harmony or melody)
And now, I’ve saved my favorite for last. Its effect is decent but the name is so uninspired…
“Trail of Light”? More like... “Light Motif”!
A light Motif is a dominant recurring theme and what’s more dominant and recurring than spam healing?
The point is that there are so many possibilities with having the Holy priest being the spec that heals with singing, and unlike trying to shoehorn bards in as a new class, it makes some sense here.
Ok, so all this stuff so far is just replacing words for other words and I know what you’re thinking…
“This doesn’t do anything to fix the fact that Holy is still quite dull compared to other healers!”
You’re dead right. The Priest’s Discipline spec currently rewards thinking ahead of what the encounter you’re facing will bring while Holy just sits back and collects red solo cups after the party is over. Let’s change that.
My main problem is with its mastery. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very “Good” when you’re thinking about the throughput and the pure numbers but it’s also a very “set it and forget it” style of gameplay and reminds me of the Shaman’s sometimes similarly maligned mastery that dishes out healing depending on how much health is missing. There’s no thinking required and frankly, Shaman have a much more interesting toolkit to justify it.
I think we would all prefer it to be more interesting like how Paladins generate more healing based on how close they are to the action which allows them to get in close with their other melee abilities anyway and encourages them to help out with the DPS. Excellent design decision. Win win win.
So the first thing is to fix the mastery and the new system I am proposing is…
“Mastery: Chord Progression”
To start, your basic heal will apply an effect to a targeted party member. This effect will have a very long uptime which can stack called Holy Note. (I’m personally imagining a buff that has a golden crotchet note with a little wing instead of the tail). Now your first Holy Note merely exists on top of the target and does a small heal over time in a similar being to how the mastery currently works, increasing with how much mastery you have.
A second heal to the target will apply a second stack and increase the stacked effect. This will change the buff icon to be two crotchets, stacked on top of one another. This will, again, increase the heal over time effect.
A 3rd heal to the target will complete the stack and heal the target with an effect called “Holy Chord” that heals more depending upon your mastery stat. Instead of just spamming heals over and over again mindlessly to get that powerful Holy Word spell you want back in case you need it, you instead work up chords on friendly targets. Targets that don’t require constant spamming will have heal over time effects up near constantly whereas targets that are dying and in need of healing will receive direct heals instead!
The effect is largely the same but with a little more thought and interactivity involved. If a target has two Holy Notes ready but is only at, say, 70% health, you can wait and focus on other party members until they drop a little more, and then you complete the chord.
So that’s the base outline of the spec. The long uptime of the buff rewards not finishing off the chord until you actually need it and still makes it usable in PvP.
The best part about it is that if we don’t want to be rid of the cooldown reduction mechanic that Holy is currently working with, it can fit very neatly over the top without changing anything too fundamental. The Holy Words might need some very slight tweaking to work but I don’t see any immediate problems with this system.
Now, Holy needs some new cooldowns. Over the years, Holy has gone from having one of the most well-rounded toolkits to one that looks very limited in comparison. Shaman's can heal by sharing health percentages. Paladin’s have all their auras, Glimmers, and immunities. Evokers can fly and bombard people with healing, heal through stuns and other CC, and reverse recent damage taken. Monks are dashing around like no one's business and healing by punching them in the face. Let’s find some good stuff to give the Holy Priest.
Guardian Spirit stays right where it is. It’s extremely thematic to the spec identity by this point and I think it works well with the Holy Note system since you can leave a target with Guardian Spirit to die while you work on other targets with Holy Notes in the meantime.
Hymn of Hope (Not Symbol, change it back) can also stay because its raid and PvP utility is interesting and works collaboratively with other healers and DPS. A good singer should strengthen and work off those around them, right? It works thematically with this Bard theming we’ve got going on. Plus, having to drop it isn’t nearly as painful as having to quit Divine Hymn early. Speaking of which.
The first thing to change is Divine Hymn itself! Sure, on paper it feels very Holyish and it’s certainly quite powerful but ask any Holy Priest what its main flaw is and they won’t hesitate to tell you. You can’t move and nothing is stopping it from being interrupted from an interrupt, a knockback, a stun, or a pull, etc. There are so many instances I can think of where I wanted to press it so badly but I knew it would do more harm than good. Added that it’s often a dead button for me if I ever decide to try using Holy for PvP since in the rare event that I’m not being trained or chain CC’d, it’s so AOE-focused that it often isn’t strong enough to help anyone outside of a Battleground from behind a rock. It requires a PvP talent to make it more worthwhile which is very seldomly picked anyway.
I had a thought after playing Discipline for a while and having Ultimate Penitence available to me. It’s an incredibly fun spell that does a boatload of healing and/or damage while making you immune to CC effects and giving you a huge absorb shield to delay damage to yourself. It’s balanced by having a long cooldown that you can reduce but only by talenting into the following nodes in the tree.
I can’t be the only one who’s noticed that Divine Hymn is basically Ultimate Penitence but drastically weakened and less cool looking to boot.
My idea was to give it the same ‘un-crowd-controllable’ effect as Ultimate Penitence and make it do generally increased healing instead of a stacking effect to increase further healing afterward. The new ‘gimmick’ of it would either be that it would either expel enemies from within a certain radius once, like Anduin’s big bubble of light from the cinematic, or gently push enemies back from the priest as the center point. This would not completely negate adds or an enemy player’s walking speed having any forward momentum, but it would definitely aid in players trying to kite adds when they’re dying or from enemy players in PvP where that little extra distance would make the difference, and would also reward the priests choice in a central location. You could inadvertently push enemies INTO players, after all.
To top all of this off, I would prefer to have this ability further down in the tree to make it feel a bit more impactful of a choice rather than ‘almost’ mandatory’ where it is smack bang in the middle. A lot of spells in talent trees that are sat dead center in the tree feel like they're meant to be picked and I feel like Guardian Spirit should be where Divine Hymn is at the moment, not as close to the level 10 talents as it is currently. For example, Soul Swap for Affliction Warlocks, Invoke Yu’lon/Chi’ji for Mistweaver, Dancing Rune Weapon for Blood Death Knights, and Pillar of Frost for Frost Death Knights. I could go on but the list is pretty exhaustive.
Another thing I would like to change is very synonymous with Holy Priests but something that I think, overall, doesn’t see as much use as we’d like. Primarily because it relies on the priest dying.
Spirit of Redemption is a cool spell, the problem is that unless you take the capstone talent to make you revive afterward or you take the PVP talent to make it into a cooldown in PvP, you don’t really ‘want’ to trigger its activation requirements or have a reliable way of doing so in PvE when you want its effects. I do enjoy that now it allows you to resurrect an ally if you die so someone else can continue the fight but it’s more of a consolation prize or at worst, a reward for bad skill expression. It is also basically a required talent in Solo Shuffle as, if the priest dies, your teammates have 15 seconds to get a kill of their own to win the match or you take the PvP talent as a way more powerful cooldown.
What I would like to do is make the Spirit of Redemption a bigger cooldown spell but give it an obscenely long cooldown so you cannot feasibly use it more than once per fight. Like the Holy Word: Salvation spell without the possibility of cooldown reduction. Because you are losing it upon death, the gimmick here would be that it would last the full 15 seconds, you don’t use mana while casting and you can resurrect a party member instantly in that form(Outside of PvP). This would make the spell more central to the spec rather than as an add-on, free up a PvP talent choice node, and make the battle resurrection more readily available rather than having to wait for your death to use it.
Another such spell we could make SO much more interesting is Divine Star. The one people don’t like taking because who the hell doesn’t WANT to take Halo, right? Whether it’s effective in whatever format you’re playing in, it’s much more visually interesting and it just FEELS powerful, y’know?
Now to fix this, I’m going to do none of the work and instead do what Blizzard should have done by taking an idea from their own IP…Anduin’s Divine Star in Heroes of the Storm!
Yeah, I know they’ve stopped doing anything with HoTS but still…
In HoTS, it has had a bunch of effects over its tenure depending on the talents you take and most of them would make the spell more interesting in WoW. Maybe when it comes back to the priest, it could explode and heal party members or deal damage as Shadow near the priest since you’re already in close range due to the nature of the spell. Maybe it doesn’t even buff up the healing of the actual spell itself and instead interacts with your other heals by producing a stacking buff per enemy/ally you hit that increases the power of your next Flash Heal or Mind Blast?
We can also improve the lackluster mobility of the Holy Priest outside of always picking Angelic Feather by giving them the reverse Leap of Faith Glyph back as a choice node between the normal Leap of Faith.
The ability to jump to your allies was a worthwhile drawback to not being able to troll people as hard with the Leap of Faith ability when Glyphs were a thing and frankly, I miss it. I find that sometimes I’d rather be able to jump into the fray, especially as a class with an AoE fear effect, and the regular leap of faith doesn’t reward that playstyle as much. I remember back in Shadowlands that having Door of Shadows to jump in, disorient them with the covenant effect, and then Psychic Scream before running back out was actually really interesting and it’s one of the only things I miss from that expansion.
In terms of a new name instead of being a glyph, our new ability “Light Transposition“ will cause you to fly to your friend’s location just like old times. Stick it on a choice node with Leap of Faith and you have two differing playstyles almost immediately.
Now a major problem all healers have to contend with, especially to compete with the Meta of Discipline Priests and Holy Paladins, is providing some level of damage.
Not gonna lie, this is where I’m not sure about this idea since I already don’t ‘love’ the idea of healer’s DPSing and having to work around the base spells of the class now that they’ve been reintroduced has made this a little clunky so I’d love some other suggestions for this part. I’d prefer that healers offered utility that DPS do not have access to rather than extra damage but that seems to be the direction Blizzard is rolling in. Frankly, at the moment, Smite and Holy Fire interact with very little of the Holy toolkit outside of Chastise and Empyreal Blaze and we also have Shadow Word: Pain and Mind Blast. I fear that they will all just be tacked on to the toolbar with no thought and we’ll just have this myriad of spells to randomly fire off when we’re bored.
Personally, as a basic idea, I would consider removing Holy Fire as a button as, in the theme of removing bloat that War Within seems to be addressing, I think having Holy Fire as an add-on effect in the same way as the Monk’s Chi Wave is being remade would be ideal. It could function in the same way as Holy Note in that every three casts of smite would bring down a blast of Holy Fire which would give way to being justified in making Holy Fire feel a bit more impactful. Mind Blast could be used within this to ‘erupt’ the Holy Fire DoT, causing an effect I think I’d like to call “Discordant Notes” on account of mixing the void with the light which would either do additional damage or perhaps cause an extra effect like a slow or AoE damage around the target.
With this in mind, Empyreal Blaze could remain as a talent and cause Smite to proc Holy Fire two additional times when it next triggers its chord effect. Shadow Word: Pain would likely exist as just an extra DoT you can throw on as it is now or it could be applied through Mind Blast to clear up more bar space.
Anyway, those are just some thoughts I’ve had. I’m sure there are flaws in them and I’m looking forward to hearing them but I hope you found them fun to theorise around!

2024.05.15 14:13 Nice_Jello9667 Moving from Manual CPC > Max Conv

Have a client that is doing well with manual CPC (new campaign we launched 10 days ago). Leads are within target CPA they want, but they're looking to see how much scale we can get (I've explained there's not a ton more... we have 80%+ impression share and 65% abs top of page rate) . My plan is to move them from manual CPC > max conversions with a target CPA and introduce broad match over time.
Has anyone seen a manual CPC campaign outperform max conversions recently? Prior to taking over they were using max clicks, and were getting outrageously expensive clicks from Google (why we started this campaign on manual CPC vs. max clicks). I worry this could happen again.
I've also been toying with max conv. value vs. max conversions and implementing a lead scoring system using monetary values, because the amount they might make is variable every single lead and they don't know the true value for months....
Probably going to wait and test that but want to try max conversions first.

2024.05.15 14:13 Soffy21 Analysis of the U-Corp economy, and its reliance on death and suffering

In Canto 5, we see the U corp, and learn a lot about how its economy works. While many other corporations’ economies mainly rely on their singularity such as J Corp and W Corp; this isn’t the case in U corp, as a big part of their economy is tourism.
The 1st part is about the laws of the lake. The lake surrounds U corp, and is within its territory.
The Lake has laws that are only known by the U Corp, and people who have paid the U Corp to learn about the laws. They can’t be written down or shared, or else the person will be hunted down; and the lake also has knowledge on whethet someone has paid the U Corp to obtain knowledge on the laws or not, implying that U corp has control over the laws of the lake to a degree; or even that they could have created the laws in the first place. This way, they gain a lot of profit, as anyone who wants to survive in the lake would have to pay U Corp, and U Corp can easily maintain control over the territory.
Mermaids are also a crucial part of U Corp’s economy, since they sell mermaid ice creams and other mermaid related products for a lot of money. Mermaids are created when a whale takes control over the body of a human and transforms them into a mermaid, connected to their body. This way, anyone who gets killed by the lake turns into mermaids, who will be hunted by sailors and turn into profits. The death of sailors is crucial for the existance of mermaids for this reason.
U corp sets up the environment in a way that people are very likely to die in the sea and become mermaids, but the existance of mermaids also cannot be linked to U Corp itself, as it was due to the whales or the laws of the lake. This way, U Corp is left blameless, and the blame for the deaths of the sailors are placed on the people for not following the lake’s laws, or the whales.
For this reason, U Corp’s economy is very close to K Corp, since both of them rely on the constant existance of death and suffering. U Corp is a more indirect version of the same model, as K Corp directly causes atrocities (and makes it seem like it’s not linked to them), and U Corp creates an environment where death is bound to happen constantly at a frequent rate. In a way, U Corp’s model is much more effective than K Corp, since the system automatically runs itself, requiring minimal intervention from U Corp, while K Corp needs to actively cause atrocities themselves.
A similar model can be seen in other corps as well, where all of their economies (and some singularities) are based on the suffering of the general population in various forms, where survival is only afforded to the rich. You can survive the lake only if you can afford the knowledge. You can keep your colors only if you can afford it (T Corp)…

2024.05.15 14:06 enter_the_bumgeon Red Rising is so fucking cheesy, simple and cliché.. and I'm here for it

After reading some hefty fantasy books I was looking for something accesible. I already knew Red Rising had similarities to the hunger games so I decided to start reading it.
So far, I'm loving it. It's so mind numbingly simple, I can completely shut off my brain when reading it. Like the system in place. Everyone is ranked by their color. Gold is at the top ofcourse, they are beautiful, strong etc. Then you have silver and then bronze. Seriously, it reads like a parody. Then you have the normal colors at the bottom. Luckily it's easy to spot who's what, because people actually look like their color. Red people all have red hair for instance. Like how easy and in your face can you make a governing power system? Literally ranking everyone by colors, making gold the top color, and actually making them have that color as appearance.
The book is also so incredibly black and white. Like in the first chapters where the golden prime ministers of mars hangs the main protagonists wife for doing a dance. After already whipping the main protagonists for going through a forbidden hallway or something. I guess they're the bad guys!
And now somehow he managed to write the biggest Y/A cliché in this book. Going to some academy. So now this big resistance hero to be is an undercover golden who's basically in the golden high school academy for becoming a big shot among the golden. It's so fucking cheesy. Like when starting the book I didn't think there was any way to write this in, but somehow he forced this academy stuff in. It's so wildly out of place. Like "Hey for some reason we want you and only you to be our chose resistance hero. You're red, but through a series of modifications we can make you Golden. Our plan is to then send you to golden high school, become the number #1 in everything, rise trough the ranks untill you have an entire fleet under your command and then help us with the resistance. Wtf, just let him do actual stuff now? Like it's so fucking stupid, but I don't care. It's fun. I genuinely don't see how people can describe this book as anything more than a guilty pleasure.
And then the characters. There's like 6 of them and they all keep running into eachother. They are all cardboard cutouts of actual persons. Like this one guys name is Titan and his personality is that he's really big and strong. He's literally named after his personality. You don't actually have to remember anyone personality, just look at their names. It's so mindblowingly simple.
Everything about me screams 'hate this book, it's so cheesy and simple and cliché'. But you know what. I love it. I understand that's it's probably written for 14 year olds, so I'm well out of the target audience. But I'm having a blast just shutting off my brain and enjoying the ride.
After typing this all out I don't even know what the make of my post. But I had to get these thoughts out of my head.
Too bad the Dutch translated version is terrible. So many grammar and spelling errors, or just complete sentences not making sense, words missing or printed double. It's like they Google translated it and didn't check it before print.

2024.05.15 14:01 Plankton_Etn IBFT Istanbul Byzantine Fault Tolerant

IBFT Istanbul Byzantine Fault Tolerant
Consensus algorithms are one of the core innovations of blockchain, and yet also one of the most confusing. Satoshi Nakamoto created a version of Proof of Work (PoW) that was implemented as a means for simultaneously securing and validating Bitcoin transactions. The blockchain community has built on that core vision to create an alphabet soup of Proof of Stake (PoS), Proof of Authority (PoA), PBFT (Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerant), and many others that are all designed to build consensus in a distributed system, creating the single source of truth that makes blockchain so valuable.
IBFT (Istanbul Byzantine Fault Tolerant) is a consensus mechanism which is an alternative to Proof of Work in a Bitcoin network. Like other algorithms, IBFT ensures a single, agreed-upon ordering for transactions in the blockchain, and provides added benefits for enterprises, including settlement finality.
Before getting into the operation of the IBFT consensus mechanism, it is worth mentioning when and why one would want to use IBFT. In a public blockchain, the short answer is likely that you would not. But when it comes to consortium or private blockchains, IBFT starts to look quite appealing.
The PoW algorithm is famously costly, in both hardware and electricity. This cost is intentional, to prevent anyone from easily taking over the network, and thus PoW is very suitable for situations with full decentralization where anyone (including attackers) can participate. Nodes in the consortium/private chains used by enterprises, however, are intrinsically more trusted than those in a public chain. As such, the PoW consensus mechanism may be overly burdensome, and other mechanisms may provide “enough” trust to run a distributed system.
Proof of Stake, likewise, may be less relevant for enterprises, because paying for gas is less important in a permissioned network. Since nodes do not (necessarily) need to maintain currency in the network, PoS would introduce extraneous requirements.
Considering these tradeoffs, Proof of Authority (PoA) emerges as a possible best solution, utilising a system whereby nodes in the network are allocated the privilege of producing new blocks for the chain using a round-robin or other arbitrary system.
IBFT is one of the many flavours of PoA and provides the following benefits:
  • Immediate block finality. There’s only 1 block proposed at a given chain height. The single chain thus removes forking, uncle blocks, and the risk that a transaction may be “undone” once on the chain at a later time.
  • Reduced time between blocks. The effort needed to construct and validate blocks is significantly reduced (in particular with respect to PoW), greatly increasing the throughput of the chain.
  • High data integrity and fault tolerance. IBFT uses a group of validators to ensure the integrity of each block being proposed. A super-majority (~66%) of these validators are required to sign the block prior to insertion to the chain, making block forgery very difficult. The ‘leadership’ of the group also rotates over time — ensuring a faulty node cannot exert long term influence over the chain.
  • Operationally flexible. The group of validators can be modified in time, ensuring the group contains only full-trusted nodes.
Here we provided an overview of IBFT, in mostly non-technical terms. For some of the original proposals of IBFT, you can review the EIPs on GitHub:
For the rest of this page, we’ll explore IBFT’s more technical considerations, discussing many of the concepts found in the EIPs and that we have learned through our own research.
Note: IBFT code can also be found in a go-ethereum pull request #16385.
Operation
The IBFT consensus mechanism comprises the following components:
  1. A PBFT inspired group consensus model.
  2. A process by which members can be added/removed from the validating group.
IBFT requires the Block Header to be (subtly) reworked to support all facets of the capability.

Group Consensus Model

Overview

IBFT uses a pool of validating nodes (Validators) operating on the Electronem network to determine if a proposed block is suitable for addition to the chain.
One node of the Validators is arbitrarily selected as the Proposer and is responsible for constructing a block at the block-interval and sharing said block with the group. If a super-majority of the Validators deem the block to be valid it is added to the blockchain.
At the completion of the consensus round, the Validators may select a new Proposer which will be responsible for providing the candidate Block at the next block interval.
The consensus mechanism is a synchronised state machine, which is responsible for ensuring all Validators append the same block to the chain at the same height.
If a block fails to insert, the Proposer is changed, and the process starts anew.
To ensure only one block can be appended to the state machine, IBFT prevents changing the proposed block once a super-majority of validators have agreed to its insertion (but not performed said work), this process is referred to as ‘Block Locking’.
The IBFT consensus mechanism offers system stability provided less than 1/3 of the validating nodes are behaving incorrectly (either due to being compromised or due to faulty code). I.e. to tolerate F faulty nodes the validation group must contain at least 3F + 1 nodes (more than this does not increase system integrity).
Note: Herein F implies the number of faulty nodes tolerated by the system.

State Machine

IBFT State Machine

States

  • Awaiting Proposal. Validator is waiting for a new block to be supplied by the current proposer. If the validator is the proposer for this round, they prepare the proposed block and transmit it in a pre-prepare message.
  • Preparing. Has received a (valid) proposed block and notified validator-peers; is now waiting for validator-peers to notify their acceptance of the block.
  • Ready. Has received validator-peer’s acceptance of block, and is waiting for them to be a in a similar position. At this stage the proposed block has been ‘locked-in’, and cannot be replaced until an attempt at insertion has been conducted.
  • Round Change. The round timed out before consensus was reached or the block failed to insert. Wait for all validators to agree on the next round number.

Transitions

  1. Awaiting Proposal → Preparing. On reception of a new block (Preprepare message) from the proposer (i.e. the block is valid in its content, as is its proposed chain insertion point).
  2. Awaiting Proposal → Round Change. The received proposal was not a valid block according to a given set of rules (e.g. invalid proposer, incorrect round numbering).
  3. Preparing → Ready. On reception of 2F+1 notifications (Prepare message) from validator-peers indicating the proposed block is suitable for insertion.
  4. Ready → Awaiting Proposal. On reception of 2F+1 notifications (Commit message) from validator-peers indicating they are ready to append the block to the chain. On transition, the process of appending the block to the chain is performed (success).
  5. Ready → Round Change. As per Ready->Awaiting Proposal, however, block insertion has failed.
  6. Round Change → Awaiting Proposal. 2F+1 of validators agree on the next round number to be used.
Note: All transitions into “RoundChange” result in the Validator transmitting a “RoundChange” message to its validator-peers.

Block Locking

IBFT mandates that forks shall not be created. To this end, once a block has been agreed upon by a majority (i.e. on entry to the Ready state) it becomes “locked in”.
This means no other blocks will be considered for insertion until an attempt to add this block to the chain has been attempted. Thus either the block is inserted successfully (once sufficient commit messages are received, either in this or subsequent rounds), or the block fails insertion, is discarded, and a new block is proposed at the current chain height.

Validation Group Membership

The members of the validation group may change over time through a voting mechanism. Members can be added or removed through a majority (Floor(N/2) + 1) vote; each vote is captured in the Block Header.
Each node in the network (including non-validating nodes) is responsible for tracking the vote tally for each validator to determine the current Validators and ensure signatures on mined blocks fall within the expected group.
Given each vote is contained in the Block Header, only the Proposer for a given round is able to cast a vote. Thus it is important, if nodes are to be added/removed in a timely fashion, that the Proposer role be updated on a regular basis.
Once a node reaches majority votes, they immediately join/leave the validator group.
IBFT recognises a Voting Epoch, which defines a point at which all votes which have not yet reached a majority are removed, forcing the voting tally to be restarted. This implies when tallying votes, Validators need only start at the most recent epoch. By default, the Voting Epoch occurs every 17,280 blocks.
Votes define a change of state (i.e. candidates get voted in, validators get voted out), not voting for a given node implies the Validator does not wish the node to change state (an explicit vote is not required to maintain the status quo).

Block Header Refactor

To support IBFT in Electroneum Smart Chain a number of changes must be made to the block headers in comparison to Ethereum's block header. These changes include:
  • beneficiary: identifies the node for which a vote is being cast.
  • nonce: specifies the vote “direction” — AUTH or DROP.
  • mixHash: afixed magic number, identifying this block as being IBFT validated.
  • ommersHash: must be the hash of an empty set, as there are no ommer blocks when operating under IBFT.
  • timestamp: must be at least the parent block’s timestamp + block interval.
  • difficulty: must be filled with 0x0000000000000001.
  • extraData: contains IBFT specific data including List of Validator Addresses, ProposerSeal (identifies the proposer), CommittingSeals (list of the validators which reported ‘commit’ on this block).
As the list of CommittingSeals for each validator is (potentially) different, it is important that the block hash not include this information — i.e. even though two blocks have different CommittingSeals fields, they represent the same information (i.e. transactions etc. are identical).

Conclusion

In closing, IBFT is a Byzantine fault tolerant solution offering immediate transaction finality which reduces the required infrastructure that PoW demands.
While unlikely to be ever used on the Ethereum mainnet (with the much wider, unknown set of participating actors), it offers substantial benefit when used on a private chain where the validator pool is trusted and held accountable; it provides an ideal solution for a chain with a fixed cadence and a predictable transaction processing rate.
The processes explored in this article give confidence that the Electroneum Smart Chain employing IBFT will be tolerant of Byzantine nodes and can be recovered should those nodes be seen to be exerting over control on the network.
