Faction review: The archipelago militia
I am an lore nerd so here is an article about the militia, the most spread out and among the biggest factions in Apoc 2.
Background/History
The militia was likely founded prior to the outbreak as they have many outposts and locations of interest with an established presence. They recieved training from Soviet advisors and were supplied with weapons. Why they were being aided by the Soviets and what goals the milita had are unknown. Its indicated that the militia were supposed to fight the US military on the archipelago and help increase Soviet influence.
When the outbreak began the militia at first did quite well at hiding its members and protecting its resources. With the attention of the US government now focused on containing the outbreak the militia made advances and send out scouts and spies to locations of interest. But as the hordes of infected grew and resources ran out the militia slowly began to collapse. Important locations like Lulu chapel, Coastal bunkers, regional airport, Mackinaw and the mansion were overrun leaving the militia scattered and underpowered. Some of its members fled to isolated locations whilst others tried to hold out in buildings. Currently the militia is completely overrun and defunct whilst its Soviet allies try to occasionally send out soldiers and infiltrators to secure the Archipelago without success.
Player dependent: The militia still has a presence on the islands with squads of up to 5 militia soldiers wandering the Archipelago. Due to loss of communications and lack of uniformity the militia squads often fight both NATO groups as well as ending up in friendly fire shootouts with other militia squads.

MONOPOSTO A Hong Kong Grand Prix
In 1953, the Hong Kong Grand Prix bacame the first Formula 1 Race to be helt in Asia. Known as the "Asian Monaco" for its tight and challenging layout, it became popular with drivers and fans, but also infamous for its fast blind corners, with drivers always at the risk of causing high-speed collision. After a fatal accident in 1968, the new T16-18 section was added, benefiting safety and racing alike. The arrival of advanced aerodynamics in the 1970s, with big wings and side skirts, not only did safety concerns rise again, overtaking on the narrow street circuit was also becoming difficult. With a layout perceived as outdated, and growing competiton for the calendar slots, Hong Kong held its last Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1980, switching to the rising Monoposto A series, which was happy to adopt what was still a fan-favourite circuit. It became a highlight of the calendar, its future insured by modern safety measures. However, another tragedy in 2013 brought Hong Kong Island Circuit back into its dark ages. Since then, there are yearly rumors of the Grand Prix being removed from the calendar, the old-school track remaining in a constant state of limbo.

Last week's trip to Colorado Springs didn't quite go as planned. We started strong, with Jack Panayotou's excellent corner leading to Frank Nodarse's goal in the 13th minute. But despite putting up a good fight, luck wasn't on our side for the rest of the game. CSS's Ronaldo Dumas scored in the 27th minute, equalizing the score. Then, midway through the second half, Karifa Yao accidentally scored an own goal, putting the Switchbacks ahead. In the 87th minute, Stephen Turnbull's foul led to a penalty kick, sealing our defeat. Perhaps the high altitude affected our fitness towards the end. Sports can hinge on a few key moments, and we need to cut down on our mistakes.
Looking ahead, we're back home this Saturday, and it looks like it'll be a full house! We're facing a tough opponent, Louisville City FC, who are second in the USL Championship's Eastern Conference table with 22 Points (7 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss). They're in great form, leading the league in goals scored with 28, compared to our 10. Despite our lower standing, currently 11th in the Eastern Conference table, we've shown promise (with 6 draws, we might as well be called the Draw Kings). Interestingly, our only victory this year was against Las Vegas, who coincidentally drew with Louisville City last week, 2-2. If my calculations are correct, it's more than just a chance against those Bluegrass State folks. It's practically fate; we've got this!
As for our team's progress this season, it's been mixed. We've had some solid performances but need to work on consistency and minimizing errors. What's your take on how our team's been doing this season? Are you headed to Bernie Stadium for the match? Based on how fast these tickets are selling, the 4 pm kick-off seems to be a hit; what do you think? Whether local or watching from afar, let's support our team as they face Louisville City and then gear up for next week's first derby match against our pesky neighbors, Hartford Athletic (Is it too soon to let the barbs fly? Nah, let's go for it: Chip > Dillon). Let's give the fans what they came for—a win and three crucial points! #UpTheTide
Kickoff Weather: Approx: 77°. Partly Cloudy (0% of precipitation). Winds S 8MPH. Sunset 8:10 PM.

2024.05.23 15:46 moondog151 A renowned and successful filmmaker would suddenly go missing without a trace. His dismembered body would later be found wrapped in garbage bags in an ally. His elderly parents were arrested for this crime and not only did they show no remorse, but did the same to their other children years prior.

(Today, I do a write-up where I make an exception to not doing write-ups on cases with an English Wikipedia article. This time the exception is due to both the Wiki article not having much information and because I find the case just that interesting.
Also, side note: Iran having its own calendar and own numerical system, and so on and so on, made it a tad difficult to try and find out which dates events happened on at times
English sources don't help entirely because sometimes they'll rely on Iranian reports that are clearly Google translated as when a particular event happened even in the English press could vary from 1990 to 2011
Also, there is conflicting information like usual and I likely missed things too so I, as always, encourage your own research)
Babak Khorramdin was born on September 23, 1974, in the Ekbatan district of Tehran, Iran. Very little is known about his upbringing, only what seems relevant to his profession. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran with a degree in cinema In 2009. In 2010 he went to London, United Kingdom to further hone his craft and study filmmaking before returning to Iran.

Babak Khorramdin
While in both Iran and London he managed to produce 8 films with his debut being a series of three short films all under the title of "Cut" released in 2004 (likely student films as their release year is before his graduation), Boor Bijadeh Rang in 2007, Tuesday: Mom in 2009, The Sun in 2010, His feature film debut "An Elegy for Yashar" In 2013 and his last film "Being", released in 2017. His mother even played a role in one of these films and the film was dedicated to her.
Although obscure to a Western audience, his films still won Babak awards, In 2009, Boor Bijadeh Rang won the reward for best foreign short film at The International Humanitarian Film Festival, while his other works also received nominations for screenplay, cinematography, editing, and sound. At the 5th Parvin Etesami International Festival in 2009 he got an honorary diploma for best editing with Boor Bijadeh Rang and Boor Bijadeh Rang would continue to be his most rewarding work as at the 6th Nahal Student Film Festival also in 2009, the film won him awards for Best Directing, Best Screenplay, and Best Sound/Audio. He would always invite his parents to any award shows. Later he would teach filmmaking at Karaj University and later shifted to online lessons after COVID-19

On May 16, 2021, a municipal worker in the Ekbatan district was cleaning out a garbage bin on Nafisi Street when he found a heavy bag with blood stains on it inside the bin. Once he opened the bag he saw that the bag was wrapped around a suitcase, inside the suitcase he found human body parts consisting of shoulders, palms, arms and ankles. The worker quickly called the police. The police had the remains sent for forensic analysis where it was determined that they belonged to a man, likely 40-50 years old and that he had been deceased for only a few hours.
The police began by questioning the security guards and they said that each apartment building in the vicinity had a garbage chute and that the guards always checked each piece of garbage to make sure the residents weren't disposing of any stolen goods or other illegal materials. So they told police that the killer likely didn't live in the area or that they manually walked the suitcase over to the garbage as they didn't see any suitcase when shifting through the garbage chute. The police checked the CCTV footage and saw an elderly man with the same suitcase the police had recovered in one of the nearby apartments.
Enough of the hands and fingers remained for investigators to take fingerprints which led them to identify the partial remains as Babak Khorramdin 6 hours after he was found. The police went to the apartment of Babak's parents to break the news only to be taken aback to see that his father, 80-year-old Ali Akbar Khorramdin looked almost exactly like the man in the CCTV footage. Both he and his wife/Babak's mother, 74-year-old Iran Mousavi Sani also said that they didn't know what had happened to Babak or where he had gone, that he didn't live with them and they weren't at all shocked or saddened to hear of their son. The police suspecting them of lying, obtained more CCTV of different parts of the building and questioned the neighbours who told police that they regularly heard arguing coming from their apartment. The police also searched their home and found bloodstains in their bathroom. According to the CCTV footage, Babak entered on May 15th but never left. Afterwards, Akbar and Mousavi were seen with mutable bags and suitcases with Mousavi struggling to keep the elevator doors open while Akbar walked into the elevator carrying bags and suitcases including one matching the suitcase police had found.

Stills from the CCTV footage (1400-02-25 is the date)
The two were immediately arrested and both confessed, even telling police they were on their way to turn themselves in and didn't expect the investigation to begin and conclude so quickly. The police found more human remains in garbage bins at Aryashahr and San'at Square which while still incomplete, matched Babak. According to their confession, after he came over Mousavi put sleeping pills in Babak's food. Once he passed out they tied his wrist and ankles to the bed with a shoelace and belt. They then wrapped a plastic strap around his neck. Afterward, they both stabbed him three times in the chest. His parents then brought his body into the bathroom where he was dismembered with a knife and cleaver, placed into three bags or cases and disposed of.
As soon as the news broke, it outraged Iran and soon became one of the country's most high-profile crimes in its history. When the public learnt of the motive they became even more infuriated as it came out that the case was a so-called "Honor Killing". They said that his unmarried status brought shame and dishonour to his family, that he behaved poorly and was abusive toward them even threatening their lives and refusing to leave them alone. Akbar even offered to sell his car and give him their entire inheritance if he left only for him to laugh and say "The only way I'll leave is as a corpse" His father also accused him of having relations with unmarried women. He added that during online classes brought on by the pandemic, he would invite female students to his home under the guise of private lessons. He also alleged that Babak had begun drinking alcohol and abusing drugs which he further used to justify the murder. Akbar expressed no remorse.
The Iranian Twitter userbase, also decided to have their fun and insult the two as well as making jokes and memes about the circumstances of the murder with such tweets as "From now on, don't eat anything from your parents, don't mess with the TV or AC remote, and for your safety, take turns with your siblings standing guard until morning to figure out what to do next," "I’ve tied the handle of my room door to a shotgun," "If one day my mom kills me, her defence will be: 'What can I say, Your Honor? Do you think a student’s room should look like this?'" "That question 'How to die without your parents finding out' is pointless now; Instead, focus on. 'how to stay alive without your parents finding out.'"
Babak's death was also deeply mourned being buried on May 26 in a cemetery reserved for artists while his students and many other Iranian filmmakers paid tribute to him. Many also rallied outside of his parent's home where he was said to live to pay their respects and sing songs of mourning. They even removed the garbage bins where his remains were found to plant a tree in its place.
Babak's Memorial
Their neighbours, and those who knew Babak well bluntly accused his parents of lying. They knew Babak to be kind-hearted, nice and importantly for the cultural context "moral". The police believed that he likely made this story up to sway public opinion to his side. Their relationship was also highly estranged for nearly 5-6 years prior to his murder. Furthermore, if there was anyone the public and their relatives believed to be morally failing, it would've been Akbar as most of his family by and large did not have positive things to say about him.

The two at their first court hearing
Akbar Yazdani was born in 1941 and soon developed extremist and nationalist beliefs even changing his family's last name to Khorramdin just so he could name his son Babak and have a child with the exact same name as the ancient historical figure "Babak Khorramdin" who Akbar saw as Anti-Arab and in his own words "Cleansed pure and holy Iran of the Arabs" The other Babak Khorramdin rebelled against the Abbasid Caliphate and was punished by having his hands and legs cut off before being executed. It should not come as a surprise to learn that Akbar also said "I have a problem with Arabs. I don't like them. If I had the power, I would eliminate all Arabs." This didn't endear him to the public anymore as the first judge he was put in front of, reminded him that many notable Islamic Religious figures were Arab. He was also controlling and wanted his family to mimic him despite being absent from his family for 17 years meaning neither of his children ever had a good relationship with him.
He joined the military in 1979 and had 30 years of service in Iran's Armed Forces, 17 of which as mentioned were away from his family. He also fought in The Iran–Iraq War as a colonel where he fell victim to chemical weapon attacks twice and was shot four times. This was also notable because Akbar also desired to be the center of attention. In January 2015, he was invited to The Iranian Cinema Museum for a showing of An Elegy for Yashar and Babak decided to let his father speak. With this time he never once congratulated his son or expressed pride for making his first feature film, But he did express pride toward himself and his own achievements in the military. He, in fact, used the entire allotted time to only speak about himself and his wartime experiences. He topped it off by advising young Iranians not to leave Iran because of their "pride" and to stay in the country and do what work they want to do there, while his son who went to London to study was on the same stage.
While looking for more witnesses against them, the police noticed that two of Akbar and Mousavi's relatives were missing and couldn't be reached. They were their son-in-law (Sources say he was also simultaneously his nephew) Faramarz Golab and their daughter, Babak's older sister Arezoo Khorramdin. A revelation that led some to suspect Babak was killed because he grew suspicious. When questioned, the two both confessed to murdering the both of them as well.
Faramarz was born in 1966 and had two brothers and one sister, he was raised by his paternal uncle and was said to have a good relationship with his family who raised him in a traditional religious household with Faramarz not indulging in smoking, alcohol or anything of the sort. He worked as an electrical technician and was said to take great care of his car. In 1999, after five years of marriage, 27-year-old Arezoo divorced her husband and afterwards became depressed and ill. That was where she met Faramarz and the two soon became a couple.
Faramaz's family disapproved of the relationship and accused Faramarz of only loving Arezoo out of pity. Their relationship didn't stay happy for long though. They got engaged but the wedding would frequently be delayed as they often fought, then broke up and then reconciled, in one incident Arezoo attempted suicide not long after one of their break-ups. In either September or October 2011, the two finally married and moved out of their respective family's homes to live together in Tehran. Despite their marriage and new living arrangements, they still fought a lot with Arezoo smoking behind Faramaz's back, something dangerous with her unstated illness.
On December 14, 2011, she went to her family's home with a knife and said that she was going "end their marital union once and for all". Not wanting his daughter to be a killer, Akbar opted to do it himself. He claimed that Arezoo put 80 sleeping pills in Faramaz's food and once he fell unconscious, he told Arezoo to leave while he stabbed Faramaz to death and with the help of three of his friends, dismembered his remains, placed them in bags and disposed of them, just as he would do with his son 10 years later. Akbar like with the murder of his son, expressed no remorse and said that it was Faramaz's own fault for his "morals" They then abandoned his car near Mehrabad
The police thought that Akbar was again lying, Arezoo wasn't around to tell her side of the story, After all, Mousavi already confessed to jointly killing Faramaz and Akbar confessed to killing Arezoo as well. Arezoo seemed concerned about his safety she would try calling him 14 times after his disappearance in hopes that he would answer. Their last contact was when Faramaz said he was safe at his uncle's house and "wouldn't see" her tomorrow.
On March 15, 2012, Akbar went to the home of Faramaz's family to say that he had abruptly divorced Arezoo and abandoned him, going to Oshnavieh to be smuggled out of the country. They were in disbelief and wouldn't think that Faramaz would do such a thing, but no report was made and his fate remained unknown with many thinking that the smugglers must've killed Faramaz. Due to the passage of 10 years, Faramaz's body likely went undiscovered, transferred to a landfill and will probably never be found.
Faramaz Golab
Arezoo's mental health deteriorated even further after Faramaz went missing posting on her Facebook in 2013 about suicide. After Akbar's 2021 arrest, those who knew Arezoo even came forward to state that she confided in them that Akbar made sexual advances toward, and raped her when she was as young as 8. The police, however, dismissed and still do dismiss such claims as baseless. Alongside smoking, she soon turned to drug and alcohol abuse. Arezoo went missing in July or August 2018 and when confronted about it, both Akbar and Mousavi claimed that she had run away to Istanbul, Turkey, and from Turkey immigrated to Canada to apply for refugee status. While in Canada an outburst of her's ended with her being involuntarily committed to a Canadian Mental Hospital, and because she suffered from multiple sclerosis she was likely to pass away in Canada very soon.
Arezoo Khorramdin
Nobody at the time believed them but they had no evidence to report her disappearance to the police as suspicious. According to Akbar's confession, together with Mousavi, they murdered Arezoo in a manner practically identical to Babak, drugged, stabbed, dismembered and disposed of in garbage bins with her body unlikely to ever be found. Akbar said that her substance abuse, drinking and socializing with strangers had brought shame and dishonour to the family and thus he was justified in killing her. Many suspect that the real motive was to keep Arezoo from discovering the truth about Faramaz. He likewise expressed no remorse and stated that should he be released, he'd kill his two remaining children finding them to be in possession of loose morals as well. Mousavi said that she would aid him in this if they were released.
Akbar and Mousavi were both subjected to a psychiatric evaluation where it was determined that Akbar was sane while Mousavi was severely mentally ill but not impaired enough to be incapable of telling between right and wrong, thus Akbar and Mousavi were competent to stand trial.
Meanwhile, Mousavi initially expressed no remorse either, stood by her husband and spoke of Babak, Faramaz and Arezoo with hatred, contempt and disgust. But on June 28, 2021, Mousavi suddenly had a change of heart and turned on Akbar. She said that her marriage to Akbar was an arranged one without any hint of love, she also repeated the claim that Akbar had raped Arezoo but also that he had raped and abused her in order to coerce her into killing her children. The judge and prosecutors didn't believe her due to just how callous and unremorseful she was prior. Apparently, the other inmates despised her and they believed that she painted herself as a victim to hopefully get moved somewhere else and shown leniency at sentencing.
Their trial was due to begin at Branch 5 of the Criminal Court of Tehran Province and since Akbar was forgiven Farmaz's siblings, the death penalty was taken off the table. Because the Iranian legal system stipulates that leniency is to be shown to those who kill their own children, Akbar was said to be facing a maximum of 10 years imprisonment due to Babak and Arezoo being his children (I read that it says a father owns their child's blood and thus can't be retaliated against). Going even further, if the court actually believed his claims about Babak and Arezoo "lacking in morals" to be true, he may just be released with no punishment. He was also never charged with any sexual assaults or rapes, the witness who made the first claim didn't show up to court and Farmaz's family said that Arezoo would've likely confided in them had such a thing happened to her. Ultimately, a lack of evidence stopped this charge from ever being presented.
But he wouldn't even get that, nor be sentenced at all. Akbar was suffering from malignant cancer and it was fairly unlikely he'd survive for much longer. He requested a medical release to live out his last days saying that he'd never live to see his trial and that he was too cancer-ridden to ever be a threat to anyone else. His remaining children and family even decided to "forgive him" because of the illness but the judges denied this request and on November 21, 2021, Ali Akbar Khorramdin was found dead in his cell at Rajaeeshahr Prison, a medical examination ruled his death as cardiac arrest.
During her trial at Branch 13 of the Criminal Court of Tehran Province, Mousavi changed her story even further, denying any involvement in the three murders at all and that she only confessed because Akbar threatened and wanted her to go down with him. According to her, the only thing she was guilty of, was disposing of one of the bags all whilst being ignorant of its contents. The prosecutor said that she was just as malicious as her late husband, knew exactly what she was doing, and now that Akbar was deceased, she jumped at the opportunity to paint him as the sole perpetrator. On June 9, 2022, Iran Mousavi Sani was found guilty and handed down a sentence of 45 months imprisonment.
Mousavi was granted amnesty and released on August 24, 2022, only two months into her sentence. After her release, her family, especially her two surviving children have completely disowned and want nothing to do with her and thus wouldn't take her in either. Mousavi was said to be living in a nursing home where her health has deteriorated to the point of needing constant care and can't live alone. According to reports, she has had zero visitors and will likely stay there alone till the day she dies which according to updates on her health, is likely fast approaching.

While in both Iran and London he managed to produce 8 films with his debut being a series of three short films all under the title of "Cut" released in 2004 (likely student films as their release year is before his graduation), Boor Bijadeh Rang in 2007, Tuesday: Mom in 2009, The Sun in 2010, His feature film debut In "An Elegy for Yashar" 2013 and his last film "Being", released in 2017.

Stills from the CCTV footage (1400-02-25)
Their neighbours, and those who knew Babak well, bluntly accused his parents of lying.

Akbar Yazdani was born in 1941 and soon developed extremist and nationalist beliefs even changing his family's last name to Khorramdin just so he could name his son Babak and have a child with the exact same name as the ancient historical figure "Babak Khorramdin" who Akbar saw as Anti-Arab and in his own words "Cleansed pure and holy Iran of the Arabs". The other Babak Khorramdin rebelled against the Abbasid Caliphate and was punished by having his hands and legs cut off before being executed.
He, in fact, used the entire allotted time to speak only about himself and his wartime experiences.
They were their son-in-law (Some sources say he was also simultaneously his nephew) Faramarz Golab and their daughter, Babak's older sister Arezoo Khorramdin.
He claimed that Arezoo put 80 sleeping pills in Faramaz's food and once he fell unconscious, he told Arezoo to leave while he stabbed Faramaz to death and with the help of three of his friends, dismembered his remains, placed them in bags and disposed of them, just as he would do with his son 10 years later .

2024.05.22 13:42 Yurii_S_Kh There is a St. Nicholas!

There is a St. Nicholas!
The question, "Is there a Santa Claus?" has led by association to the question, "Was there a St. Nicholas?" among secular historians. The issue seems to revive every December before Christmas, although everyone knows that St. Nicholas's feast day does not fall on Christmas, and he is only associated with the Nativity of Christ by the proximity of his own feast day. Well, and because he always gave people gifts.
Holy Hierarch Nicholas of Myra and Lycia is commemorated by the Church on December 6/19. Anyone who has ever prayed to St. Nicholas for help knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that he not only did exist, but still does exist, for our God is a God of the living (cf. Mt. 22:32).
St. Nicholas the Wonder Worker, icon, 1713
Russian sailors
Archimandrite Alipy (Voronov +1975) was abbot of the Pkov Caves Monastery, located in Russia near the Estonian border, from 1959–1975. The parishioners of the Monastery remember Archimandrite Alipy's wise reply to an article in Pechorskaya Pravda stating that St. Nicholas never existed. The Father Superior of the monastery gave a sermon on the subject:
Not long ago, the newspaper Pechorskaya Pravda published an article citing Eusebius of Samosata, showing that St. Nicholas never existed. Question: Does anyone in Pechory have a copy of that book by Eusebius of Samosata, so that this quote can be found? Furthermore: if a historian does not write about someone, it does not mean that that person never existed. We all know that Eusebius of Samosata was an Arian. By the way, St. Nicholas slapped Arius on the face during an Ecumenical Council. Would Eusebius write about that? I doubt it. I think the problem is that St. Nicholas never came to the Pachkovo village soviet to register himself, and did not go to the Pechory city executive committee to sign himself in. Nevertheless, we do have evidence that St. Nicholas existed and still does exist.
One time in the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, after doing some restoration work, I met and talked with one naval commander. Here is what he told me: 'I don't know if there is a God, but I know for certain that there is a St. Nicholas.' Then he told me this story: During the war, our ship was hit in the Black Sea, and it began to sink. We saw that the situation was bad. Nevertheless, atheistic fear wouldn't allow us to pray. Suddenly, one of our sailors proposed that we pray to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. Everyone agreed; we all kneeled and asked for his help, in whatever way we were able. Then, our ship just straightened up and started sailing, as if nothing had happened. It took us—with a hole in its side—straight to the shore. It's amazing to say that I did not even have time to give a command before the entire crew had run to the church to place a candle to St. Nicholas.
That's what the commander told me—that's no Eusebius of Samosata for you.[1]
St. Nicholas Monastery
Fr. Dorotheos is the abbot of the St. Nicholas Monastery on the Island of Andros, Greece. Below are some incidents he related that also leave no doubt about the existence of St. Nicholas.[2]
The holy oil
https://preview.redd.it/usau3kd8ty1d1.png?width=250&format=png&auto=webp&s=2bb947a5858d4ac29bce23a112f40587a672a65e
Every year on St. Nicholas’ feast-day, Abbot Dorotheos gives out little packets of blessed wheat from the lity in honor of the saint. A few years ago, just as he had given out the last packet, a local fisherman came in and hurried to the altar to receive his wheat. Instead, the abbot gave him a small bottle of oil from the kandili hanging over the saint’s icon. The fisherman put it in his coat pocket and left. A few weeks later he was at sea when a sudden storm arose. Although he was a skilled sailor, the storm became violent and, unable to get to shore, he feared that his boat would capsize. He began to pray to St. Nicholas, and remembering the holy oil, took the bottle from his pocket and poured it into the sea. Immediately the wind ceased, and in a short time the water around the boat was as smooth as glass. The fisherman sailed back to Andros, giving thanks for the saint’s intercession.
Fish for the Feast
In the 1980’s, Father Dorotheos was acquainted with the abbot of a small skete on Mount Athos near Karelia where there is a church dedicated to St. Nicholas. On one of the saint’s feast-days, however, there was no fish, and the monks were left with only beans and bread for the celebration. Fr. Damaskenos, the abbot, was unhappy about keeping such a poor feast, and prayed to the saint, “I’m sorry, but we have no fi sh to honor you with.” A few hours later a fisherman walked into the skete carrying a large bag of fish. Setting the bag down, he said to the abbot, “These are for you.”
The abbot asked where he had come from and the man replied that he was from the middle peninsula,[3] but had been blown off-course while fishing and landed miles away on the Athonite coast. Knowing that he was too far from any settlement to get his fish to market before they spoiled, the fisherman was surprised to see an old man suddenly emerge from the woods, who asked him where he was from. The fisherman told his story and the old man replied that he would buy the fish. He paid him, and told the fisherman to take the fish to the skete “for my feast.” The simple fisherman didn’t think about the strange words until the abbot asked him what the old man had looked like. Pointing to an icon of St. Nicholas, he replied, “Like that.” The monks celebrated the feast with great joy, and the abbot, in relating the story to Father Dorotheos, told him that to his great regret, he had not thought to ask the fisherman to trade him the money given to him by the saint.
The “Old Grandfather”
One woman from Thessalonica came to the monastery a few years ago and told Abbot Dorotheos and the monks that one day, while walking to church with her four year-old son, the child was attracted by something in the road and letting go of her hand, darted into the busy street. A huge truck was approaching, and just before it hit him she screamed out for St. Nicholas. After the truck passed over her son’s body, she ran terror-stricken into the road, expecting to find him dead. Instead, he stood up seemingly unscathed, and when she asked him if he was hurt he said matter-of-factly, “Oh no, the old grandfather laid on top of me in the road.”
The Guardian at the Gate
About twenty years ago, when Father Dorotheos was living alone in the monastery, two of the monastery’s tenant farmers became dissatisfied and irrationally demanded that they be granted clear title to their farms. If this didn’t happen, they threatened, they would make trouble for the monastery. They were as good as their word and one night showed up intending to break in. As they approached the big front gate (now fitted with a heavy wooden door and iron bars, but then only an open archway) they were met by an old man, slightly balding, with gray hair and beard, wearing a long brown cloak. He stopped them and said, “Go away, I’m here.” The men rudely replied, “What’s that to us? Out of the way, old man!” and started to push past him. He answered with the compelling command, “Look at me!” Surprised, they turned, and as they looked at him, rays of light shot from his eyes. Terrified, they ran to Apikia, the nearest village, where they told everyone they had seen the saint.
On the next St. Nicholas Day, not long after, one of the men brought a huge artos[4] for the feast, and the abbot, smiling, asked him, “Are you still planning to make trouble for me?” Embarrassed, the man replied softly, “No,” and gave the abbot his offering for the saint.
Saved from an icy death

Archimandrite Philadelph (Mishin) recalls a miracle of St. Nicholas that happened while he was in exile (from The Sretensky Calendar: Testament of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia):
“I was in exile. It was a hungry year. The work was very, very hard. There was nothing to eat. Absolutely nothing. And it was a harsh, grey winter. Transportation was stopped, and deliveries ended. We were completely hungry and cold for several days, and to make matters worse, the temperatures dropped to forty below. Birds froze in flight. And the rags we wore… Many of my brothers fell; they lost their strength and couldn’t walk. I was also getting ready to die from hunger and cold.
“We spent the night in separate huts—tiny, shabby ones. We stuffed the window with rags. There was snow on the floor—it blew in through the cracks. The door was half-open. A whole mass of ice had frozen on it.
“There was a cold wind. I lay there, wrapped in rags. The frost crept up and turned my whole body to ice. Suddenly, I wanted to sleep, badly. I knew perfectly well—that is the herald of death. Had I dozed off but a little… that’s all, I would not have risen for ages. Rising with all my strength, I decided to pray for the last time to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. “O God-pleaser,” I said to him, “I’m dying. You see everything. You are the quick helper, so come and help me.” I don’t remember what happened after that, what I said or didn’t say—I don’t remember. I only heard a loud knocking at the door. I opened it. There was a strong gust of wind and cold snow smacked my face. There was no one there.
“But what was this? There were fresh footprints going from the door. I looked on around the corner… A large sack was standing there, and the snow had not yet covered it. My God, what sort of phantom was this? I looked around again for tracks. They went off in the direction of the forest. Not a soul anywhere around—only the snowstorm gathering strength.
“I took the sack. It was heavy. I took it inside the hut and opened it… My dear children!...” the elder began to sob. “There were fresh loaves of bread in the sack. And they were still warm, absolutely hot! As if they had just taken them out of the oven. But what oven could be there?! There wasn’t a single home within fifty versts, only exiles and prisoners.
"Well, we lived on this bread a whole week. When the snowstorms quieted they brought us rations, and no one died then. In other camps, we heard, many froze in that storm. But none of ours froze. Wonderworker Nicholas, save us!...”

2024.05.21 17:10 EyeHaveNoBanana Coming to town for Memorial Weekend - looking for a BB’s recommendation

My wife and I are visiting this weekend from STL. I haven’t been to your town in something like 30 years (I’m 52). One thing on our must-do’s is BB Kings. I love the blues. Looking at the calendar and planning for reservations, I’m hoping I might get a local recommendation? The choices look like Memphis Jones, the Memphis Blues Trio, Ashton Riker and the Memphis Royals, or the house band.
Any help is much appreciated!

2024.05.21 06:07 Crowsbeak-Returns We're probably going to lose another of great word now. https://www.teenvogue.com/story/the-sinister-history-of-the-word-moron-explained

So, these imbeciles have gotten it itno their heads because bad word may have in part been developed in part by someone associated with the Eugenics movement we can't use that word. (I suspect the fetal achohol syndrome sufferers who wrote this don't like its become a alternative to a certain other beautiful word we can't use anymore). Also of course attacks the very concept of the asylum system that totally wouldn't be a good place to put every neurotic idiot who subscribes to the thought this article seeks to propagate. Also the attempt to tie that judge to weirdo white nationalists and the right as meaning just the right as a whole rather then a specific small section is funny. Should be noted both sides of the aisle united in TN to actually make this shit illegal and reprimanded said judge https://clarksvillenow.com/local/proposal-would-stop-judges-from-offering-less-jail-time-in-exchange-for-sterilization/
Also I love how they try to turn this into a diatribe against those who would like immigration lowered.
The Sinister History of the Word "Moron," Explained
It's much more than just a casual insult.
By Marlena Scott
September 12, 2017FWHTTB The science of eugenics and sex life, the regeneration of the human race (1914)Z4 Collection / Alamy Stock Photo
OG History is a Teen Vogue series where we unearth history not told through a white, cisheteropatriarchal lens. In this piece, writer Marlena Scott explores the history of of the word "moron," which is tied to the eugenics movement in the United States.
"Moron" is commonly used to describe someone who has made a decision that is perceived as unwise, or to scold oneself over a mistake or slipup. Whichever way the word is flung around, the origins of "moron" are far more sinister.
The term is attributed to psychologist and eugenicist Henry H. Goddard, who used it to describe “feeble-minded” individuals. It is closely tied to the United States’s involvement in eugenics, a scientific term, meaning "well-born," that describes the belief that the human population can be controlled by breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics. It focuses on eliminating “undesirable” individuals, singling out unmarried mothers, people of color, the poor, and those with disabilities. In the United States, eugenics influenced much of the immigration and segregation policies in the 20th century. "Moron" and other words like it — such as "idiot" — were used to support racist, classist ideas and to advance white supremacy behind the mask of scientific advancement.
According to a report from NPR's Code Switch, "moron" was born of Goddard’s fascination with intelligence and his desire to measure what it was and what it was not. In the early 20th century, psychologists grouped people who fell behind the ideal measure of intelligence into three categories that we now recognize as casual insults: “imbecile,” “idiot,” and “feeble-minded.” Goddard, unsatisfied with the existing terms, coined "moron" to embody both low intelligence and behavioral deviance. None of these endured as medical terms, but at the time they were enough to institutionalize someone and sterilize them as a means to prevent them from reproducing.
Goddard organized patients by disease, habit, or condition, as laid out in his 1911 work, Heredity of Feeblemindedness. He analyzed and coded families with the following qualities: "A, alcoholic (habitual drunkard); B, blind; C, criminal; D, deaf; Dwf, dwarf; E, epileptic; F, feeble-minded, either black letter, or white letter on black ground (the former when sex is unknown); I, insane; M, migraine; N, normal; Sx, grave sexual offender; Sy, syphilitic; T, tuberculous; W, wanderer, tramp, or truant." Goddard wrote of one family: “The offspring of the feeble-minded woman and this feeble-minded man were three feeble-minded children and two others who died in infancy. An illegitimate child of this woman is feeble-minded and a criminal.”
"The idiot is not our greatest problem. He is indeed loathsome. ... Nevertheless, he lives his life and is done. He does not continue the race with a line of children like himself. ... It is the moron type that makes for us our great problem," Goddard said in 1912.
The volume of immigrants coming into the country during the early 20th century was the highest it had ever been. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, between 1901 and 1910, 8,795,400 people immigrated to the United States, primarily from the area then known as Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Germany. It was essential to Goddard's work to ensure there were no "feeble-minded morons" in the bunch, so he sent assistants to Ellis Island in 1913 to observe and identify "morons" according to his methods. As previously mentioned, one of Goddard's methods included a pseudoscientific coded guide that looked something like a family tree. Goddard would study families, code their behavior by letter, and draw conclusions that the feeble-mindedness or blindness or deafness of the preceding generation would affect the children. According NPR's Code Switch, 40% of Italians, Hungarians, and Jewish people that were tested qualified as "morons" and were deported in 1913. Deportations doubled the following year.
WATCH

Those labeled "moron" could be institutionalized, deported, or sterilized in order to create a race of humans deemed superior by those in positions of influence and power, according to a New Yorker piece on the history of eugenics. Eugenics was widely embraced in academia and even celebrated at the World's Fair. In the first half of the 20th century, this movement in the U.S. led to the involuntary sterilization of around 60,000 people, mostly women of child-bearing age, who were subjectively deemed unfit to reproduce.
Federally funded sterilization programs were legalized in 32 states. The state of Virginia passed its Eugenical Sterilization Act in 1924, and to test the legality of the law, Carrie Buck, a poor 17-year-old girl from Charlottesville, was sent to the Virginia Colony for Epileptics and Feeble-Minded — an asylum for those deemed so-called "morons" where her mother, Emma, had been admitted just a few years prior. Carrie was pregnant as the result of rape and, after giving birth, was sterilized at the colony with no understanding of what was happening to her. The move was backed by law and further supported by the Supreme Court, as demonstrated in the 1927 Buck v. Bell case, in which the court ruled that the sterilization of the "unfit" — including the intellectually disabled — did not violate the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. After observing Buck, her mother, and her grandmother — all poor white women — Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. delivered the opinion of the court, writing, "three generations of imbeciles was enough." This decision has never been overturned.
If this thought process sounds grossly aligned with ideals promoted in Nazi Germany, that’s because it is — but eugenics and the attempt to discontinue “feeble” bloodlines is American-bred. In the 1930s, Nazi leadership turned to American eugenics as inspiration in developing tactics to ensure the erasure of European Jews. In Mein Kampf, Adolf Hilter wrote, “There is today one state in which at least weak beginnings toward a better conception [of immigration] are noticeable. Of course, it is not our model German Republic, but [the U.S.] …”
Southern black women were sterilized en masse, often without consent, for much of the 20th century. It was a practice so common that it received a nickname: a "Mississippi appendectomy." The sterilization of Native Americans occurred as late as the 1980s. While some states have formally apologized for their role in the practice, the desire to control “undesirable” groups still persists among some in the U.S., leaving vulnerable populations at risk.
In May, Sam Benningfield, a general sessions judge in Tennessee, announced that he would offer shorter prison sentences to inmates — a population largely impacted by the nation's ongoing opioid crisis — who would undergo vasectomies or receive the birth control implant Nexplanon. "I'm trying to help these folks begin to think about taking responsibility for their life and giving them a leg up — you know, when they get out of jail — to perhaps rehabilitate themselves and not be burdened again with unwanted children and all that comes with that," Benningfield told CBS News. In July, the judge pulled the offer following protest from health officials and civil rights attorneys, according to The Washington Post.

Nine decades after Carrie Buck was sterilized, white nationalists, white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and the so-called "alt-right" gathered in her hometown for "Unite the Right" rallies on August 11 and 12. Many of those present called for a "purer" race of human beings and chanted phrases like, "You will not replace us." The weekend ended in violence and the death of Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old woman who was killed when a driver slammed into a crowd of anti-racism counterprotesters.

Newest thrift store find, decided to read the discharge & disability part lol
Husband and I went thrifting today, came up to me with this book for 10 cents. He put it back and I said “hell no, we’re taking that crusty thing home!” And I’ve been reading it since. We live next to a national cemetery with an Army museum so this stuff interests me anyways.
Having filed 90% of his claims, appeal after appeal and reading endless VA law (post 9/11 173rd vet who is now rated 100% P&T), I got a kick out of some of the old ass stuff in this book. He chuckled at the $6.25 and “quarters, fuel and light.” Now they pay that in travel reimbursement haha.
We popped champagne and maybe lit a J when he got his P&T letter in the mail. My husband has been through a lot, in Afghanistan and at home. I don’t know that I will ever forget the nights he spent in bed crying in my arms after a friend he deployed with died by suicide. Because there was a time he would have never let me see that. Let your family, your wives, your friends, your loved ones see.
And here we are, a year later, laughing and smiling in bed about a silly Army book. It gets better. It still sucks but you get stronger.

2024.05.21 01:19 Kaenu_Reeves Empty Continents: People of the Outer Banks

This is a loosely connected set of stories that are mostly to enhance the early periods of Empty Continents, specifically right after the Vanishing.
You see the full forum here: https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/empty-continents.553057/
Or a more easy-to-read version here: https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/empty-continents.553057/reade
Ocracoke Island is a small island off the coast of North Carolina. Once, it was a small tourist hub, known for its pirate-themed culture. Legend has it that Blackbeard himself roamed these same shores. However, the Vanishing would force these islands to adapt or die, and Ocracoke had unique opportunities and challenges. The first day was simply chaos. Cell service and power had gone out, and most of the tourists were confused about what was even happening. A quick expedition to the mainland showed something horrifying- everything had completely disappeared. Not only was there nobody, but there were no structures; it was as if human civilization never existed on the mainland.
The key figure for managing this confusion was the 21 year old Edward Tress. A native to Ocracoke, he knew a bit about living off the land. He first made a head count of everyone on the island.
“So, there’s 751 living on the island, as well as 18 people who came here from boats,” Edward said to the people of the island. “We’ll need to be careful to preserve water on the island. We might use wells, but we can’t let seawater come in. Our best bet is to ration the water supplies and build rain barrels.”
Immediately, the people of Ocracoke were put to work. Ninety percent of them would deal with water by digging wells, creating rain barrels, and generally leaving containers in the open to collect water. The other would use sailboats, rowboats, and rarely fuel-powered boats (nicknamed guzzlers by Ocracoke) to investigate what was truly happening. They would also fish right off the coasts of North Carolina to provide some much-needed food.
After a week or so, heavy rains gave the people of Ocracoke some much-needed drinking water. “Nature is fortunate for now,” Edward Teach announced during a campfire gathering, “but we need to be diligent. We can’t ruin the island that raised us.” The next course of action would be to provide sustainable food. Fishing squads would venture on expeditions throughout the Carolina coasts, while the more home-minded would clean and cook the fish. Over the next few weeks, the island was relatively sustainable, but there was still the mystery of what happened to the rest of North Carolina- and the rest of the world.
That would be quickly answered on Year 1, Day 17 of the Vanishing. There was little use of the Gregorian calendar anymore, but some people still used ‘2028’ in casual conversations. James Stonn (Edward’s partner) looked as a large guzzler entered the horizon from the north. “What’s that?” he asked himself. He summoned Edward Tress, now the de-facto leader of the island, to talk to the new yacht.
“Hello?” said Edward, confused. The captain got out of the yacht. “Please, I’m friendly! I come from Hatteras.”
“Oh, nice to meet you,” Edward responded. James interjected. “Please, we’re all dying to know what’s been happening. Do you have any information?”
The captain, named Trudy, sighed. “Nothing concrete for now. But rumor has it that all humans and structures on the mainland disappeared. We got a boat from Martha’s Vineyard, and apparently most of New York is intact. But anything besides that is wilderness.”
Edward looked at the captain. “That’s… strange. How are things on Hatteras?” “Not good,” Trudy responded. “We’re running low on food on water.”
“I could help,” Edward said. James looked at him, worried.
“Don’t worry, James. I have a plan to get us out of this mess.” Edward boarded the yacht, leaving James to run the island in his absence.
The captain was reluctant, but she eventually accepted to take Edward to Hatteras. There, it was an ugly sight.
“We’ve had to resort to harsh rations to stay afloat,” Trudy said. Edward looked at the island, and it seemed an idea popped into his head. But it would take a while to formulate. First, he did the same thing he did on Ocracoke-especially the rain barrels, since there was no good water on Hatteras. Managing the suburban communities was difficult at first, but the people were swayed by his leadership.
Thankfully, as Hatteras was running out of water, rain fell on the island. The people were joyful, but the joy quickly turned to fear as it turned into a thunderstorm.
As the showers poured and the thunder roared, Edward noticed a little girl looking around near the beach. He went out to help her.
“Come inside, little girl. What are you doing out there?”
Edward held their umbrella to protect the girl, who was shivering. “My mommy is somewhere else. I’m lost…” she said. “Follow me,” Edward said calmly. The thunder boomed throughout the skies. The two of them made it to an isolated shelter. “Her name is Trudy. She’s so brave!” the girl continued.
Edward chuckled as he looked at the cloudy horizon.
Eventually, the storm calmed down, and the people of Hatteras rejoiced at their new water supply. But a tragedy had occurred- the captain, Trudy, had slipped and fell, breaking her legs. She looked at Edward on a makeshift bed, weary and broken, and closed her eyes.
“What do we do now?” cried a teenage boy. Edward realized what had to be done. He gathered everyone and told them his plan. “It is now time to form a new society! Hatteras and Ocracoke will unite to form the Outer Banks Republic!” Edward said as the people looked at him weirdly at first, then cheered. Over the next few days, Edward and James would go back and forth between the islands, holding referendums and finalizing laws.
‘Finally, after the tragedy of the Vanishing, the people of the Outer Banks will unite to usher in a new era!’ This was the first line of the constitution, written and signed by most people in Hatteras and Ocracoke. There would be a time of peace and prosperity, but it would last only for a few weeks. For one day, a large patrol boat would dock on the shores of Ocracoke. Edward carefully walked forward, and a single official exited the boat.
He stared deeply at Edward, his eyes wide and troubled. “I come on behalf of the United States Provisional Government. We are here to negotiate.”

2024.05.20 14:57 narutosuglyson Help me decide on a team for Altador Cup!

Hi y'all, I used to play Neopets as a kid but had no clue what was going on and never did any events (except maybe advent calendar)
I am really excited for my FIRST AC this year but am trying to decide on a team to bid my loyalty. So far, I think I'm between Roo Island and Shenkuu, but want to know more about all the different teams! I feel like I know nothing besides all the hate for Kiko Lake HAHAHA
I don't mean like chances to win/prospects, I'm more interested in the vibe of the team, players, lore/drama, and other fun things!!!

"Top Secret: In a 2018 letter, Netanyahu asks Qatar to fund Hamas"
In letter seen by handful of people, PM urges Doha to deliver $30 million to Gaza monthly
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the government of Qatar to continue the transfer of money to Gaza, in a secret letter sent to the Qatari leadership in 2018 and only seen by a handful of people since.
Then-U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin, who was in charge of finance for the campaign to reelect Donald Trump and who is Jewish, agreed to a request from Netanyahu and sent an additional letter to Doha, this time from Washington, in effect, ensuring Qatar that the funding of Hamas would not be considered funding terror.

"Israel Knew Hamas’s Attack Plan More Than a Year Ago"
Israeli officials obtained Hamas’s battle plan for the Oct. 7 terrorist attack more than a year before it happened, documents, emails and interviews show.
Hamas followed the blueprint with shocking precision. The document called for a barrage of rockets at the outset of the attack, drones to knock out the security cameras and automated machine guns along the border, and gunmen to pour into Israel en masse in paragliders, on motorcycles and on foot — all of which happened on Oct. 7.
Officials privately concede that, had the military taken these warnings seriously and redirected significant reinforcements to the south, where Hamas attacked, Israel could have blunted the attacks or possibly even prevented them.

"Egypt warned Israel days before Hamas struck, US committee chairman says"
An Egyptian intelligence official told the Associated Press news agency this week that Cairo had repeatedly warned the Israelis "something big" was being planned from Gaza.
"We have warned them an explosion of the situation is coming, and very soon, and it would be big. But they underestimated such warnings," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

CONFIRMED: Netanyahu ordered the Israeli military to STAND DOWN for 7 HOURS during the Hamas invasion.

Hamas Leader Blows Whistle: We Are “CIA Psy-Op” To Advance Globalist Agenda
Hamas is not a terrorist organization determined to fight for the Palestinian people, wage war on Israel and reclaim lost land.
In reality, the supposedly deadly terrorist group is actually a globalist psy-op created by the CIA and supported by their supposed enemies Israel to help the globalists achieve their goals of more forever wars in the Middle East, and help usher in a ‘New World Order.’
But don’t take my word for it. That is according to the son of a founding Hamas leader, who has given up his position as a “gilded prince” in the Hamas movement to blow the whistle and tell the world the truth about what is really happening behind the scenes of the terror group.

Why Israel Helped Create Hamas
In other words, by secretly supporting a group that does not recognize the existence of the state of Israel and does not accept a two-state solution, Israel does not have to accept the existence of a Palestinian state and does not have to support a two-state solution, either.

"Excerpt from "The Secrets of the Federal Reserve: The London Connection" by Eustace Mullins*
Chart I reveals the linear connection between the Rothschilds and the Bank of England, and the London banking houses which ultimately control the Federal Reserve Banks through their stockholdings of bank stock and their subsidiary firms in New York. The two principal Rothschild representatives in New York, J.P. Morgan Co., and Kuhn, Loeb & Co. were the firms which set up the Jekyll Island Conference at which the Federal Reserve Act was drafted, who directed the subsequent successful campaign to have the plan enacted into law by Congress, and who purchased the controlling amounts of stock in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 1914. These firms had their principal officers appointed to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and the Federal Advisory Council in 1914.
