2024.05.14 10:13 prmssnz The logic of grid-down medicine

Last week in a post-deleted by the OP, there was discussion about how there is no point in stockpiling antibiotics and any attemps for lay people to practice any form of health care in a widespread grid down disaster was a waste of time
Myself and some colleagues wrote: Survival and Austere Medicine
Edit. New link. in a post below.
We are slowing working on a 4th edition with some new material and minor corrections - but it is taking longer than we thought!
But I thought given the above post, I would take the opportunity to post the introduction - which address the "why bother" question for a major long-term grid down situation. Apologies for the formatting and length
"There is a sense, when considering the issues around survival medicine practice, that everything is overwhelming, that it is impossible for lay people to provide a high level of medical care and maintain a high level of population health.
We don’t think this is the case at all. We believe that intelligent lay people with some basic medical knowledge, skills, and equipment can deliver high quality health care. While it is obviously impossible for lay people to safely and competently deal with every medical problem, and there remain many complicated diagnoses requiring equally complicated or technologically advanced treatments, for 80- 90% of the health problems afflicting humanity, simple things done well are all that is required to preserve life and limb and help alleviate suffering.
Consider the following:
1. Remote Medicine Practice:
Below are the results of one of our author’s experience in the provision of health care in various remote and austere locations (some third world, some first world) to nearly four thousand people over a cumulative 30-month period (spread over 18 years) – with more data there are few minor changes from the 2005 2nd edition, but the list is essentially the same – which is interesting. The record keeping was a bit unreliable at times, but the following summary is reasonably accurate.
Top 20 presentations (representing > 95% of consultations):
1. Minor musculoskeletal injuries - ankle sprains most common, included many minor fractures which didn’t require more than diagnosis and simple care
2. Upper respiratory tract infections
3. Allergic reactions/Hay feveAnaphylactic reactions/Rashes
4. Minor open wounds – included a mix of lacerations needing closure, many needing
cleaning and advice only, and some infected wounds
5. Gastroenteritis/Vomiting/Diarrhoea
6. Mental health problems
7. Sexual health/Contraceptive problems
8. Skin infections/Cellulitis
9. Dental problems
10. Abdominal pain - 4 confirmed acute appendix (2 treated with IV antibiotics and
subsequent delayed appendix removal / 2 required evacuation) + 1 gangrenous gall bladder. Many were "no cause found". Of the remainder with a clear diagnosis the most common were renal or biliary colic)
11. Fever /Viral illness
12. Chest infections
13. Major musculoskeletal injuries (fractures/dislocations)
14. Asthma
15. Ear infections
16. Urinary tract infections
17. Burns – mostly partial thickness within the realms of management in the environment the
patient was in. Several required evacuations. Several required rehabilitation due to location and sub-optimal initial treatment.
18. Chest pain
19. Syncope/Collapse/Faints
20. Early pregnancy problems
Major trauma was uncommon but was seen including several fractured femurs and a dozen cases of multi-system severe trauma resulting in a mix of in-country surgery and evacuations
Top 12 prescribed drugs (representing >90% of medications prescribed):
1. Paracetamol (Acetaminophen)
2. Loratadine (and other assorted antihistamines)
3. Diclofenac (and other assorted antiinflammatories)
4. Combined oral contraceptive
5. Flucloxacillin
6. Throat lozenges
7. Augmentin (Amoxycillin + clavulanic acid)
8. Loperamide
9. Nystatin (and other antifungals)
10. Hydrocortisonecream
11. Ventolininhalers(Salbutamol/Albuterol)
12. Morphine
What is of note here is that the clear majority of problems dealt with are simple and straight forward – there is still potential for serious consequences but there is scope for a well-informed lay person with a basic knowledge and access to a reasonable collection of reference books to provide reasonable care. Equally the vast majority of medication prescribed are from a very narrow well defined list – despite the fact 1000’s of drugs are on the market – the list of core lifesaving or comfort preserving ones is relatively brief.
2. Why children die
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified the following conditions as having contributed to >75% of worldwide deaths in the under 5-year age group (in no particular order):
Pneumonia Pneumonia is an infection of lungs. Prevention of this condition is somewhat limited – although good nutrition, clean and warm housing, and a reduction in the exposure to respiratory irritants (smoke) all can help. However, the most common bacteria which cause pneumonia are frequently sensitive to penicillin – which is discussed later in the book and can be produced in a low-tech environment.
Diarrhea Death from diarrhea (dehydration) is almost 100% preventable with appropriate use of oral rehydration therapy. Dirty water or poor food handling causes much diarrhea – this can be virtually eliminated by proper hygiene practices and care with drinking water.

Pre-term delivery While we are limited in the direct interventions available in an austere environment to mitigate this problem contributing factors to early labor are young age, malnutrition, smoking, poor maternal health, so there is scope for indirect intervention based on optimizing mum’s health and environment. For babies who are born prematurely the necessities of life are warmth and breast milk. With attention to detail for both things, it is possible for infants as young as 33-34 weeks to survive without high-tech intervention.
Malaria. Prevention is better than a cure, knowledge about clearing stagnant water, mosquito nets and long sleeved clothes can significantly reduce the risk. Equally quinine is derived from the bark of the Chincona tree and the Chinese have been using the herb, Artemisinin, effectively for the treatment of Malaria for years. So, while not as easy to treat or prevent as diarrhea, there is still scope for significant reduction in death rates in low-tech ways.
Blood infection Blood infection or septicemia is rapidly fatal. The ability to intervene depends on the cause of the infection and antibiotics available. Broadly, infections causing septicemia can originate from the skin, the lungs, the kidneys or bladder, and the abdominal contents. While specific treatments for these may be lacking in an austere environment – all have prevention strategies and basic low-tech treatments that can be lifesaving when applied appropriately.
Lack of oxygen at birth Of these problems, this is the one with probably the least scope for impact. Unfortunately, even if foetal distress is detected during labor (with heart beat monitoring or signs of distress like meconium), without the ability to deliver the baby quickly options are limited. That said, a caesarian section is not a massively complicated operation (and discussed in Chapter 10), and in parts of the third world is performed by trained lay people with safety and success.
Measles Again, there is limited scope to intervene directly with the disease. Measles is always around and while vaccination reduced the incidence of epidemics, sporadic cases still occur. In the absence of vaccinations epidemics of measles every few years will be inevitable. There is however some scope to minimize the spread during an epidemic with isolation and respiratory precautions during outbreaks. While some of the serious neurological complications are unavoidable in a
Prevention is better than a cure, knowledge about clearing stagnant water, mosquito nets and long sleeved clothes can significantly reduce the risk. So, while not as easy to treat or prevent as diarrhea, there is still scope for significant reduction in death rates in low-tech ways. small number of patients, basic care such as maintaining hydration can also prevent complications such as dehydration.
Neonatal tetanus The prevention of neonatal tetanus is easy. You don’t let the site where the umbilical cord attaches to the baby get dirty. It is as simple as that.
HIV/AIDS Prevention of maternal infection is the key to prevention of infection of newborns. The steps required to prevent exposure to the HIV virus are widely known: abstinence (not undertaking sexual activity), monogamy (maintaining a single sex partner rather than multiple) and if neither is a palatable option, then safe sexual practices.
Most the conditions above have an element of either preventability or the ability to be treated to some degree in an austere environment and significant improvements in mortality and morbidity can be made.

3. The greatest advances in medicine
Several years ago the British Medical Journal ran a poll trying to identify top medical advances of the last 200 years. The following is the top 12 from that poll:
Sanitation 1st Antibiotics 2nd Anaesthesia 3rd Vaccines 4th DNA 5th Germ theory 6th = The oral contraceptive 6th = Evidence based medicine 8th Imaging 9th Computers 10th Oral rehydration therapy 11th Smoking cessation 12th =
Just as with our discussion above about the causes of childhood deaths, this list is introduced to show just how much impact a very basic health care knowledge can have in terms of optimising health in a post-disaster or austere situation.
Of the biggest advances of medicine in the last 200 years, between 7 to 9 (depending on your knowledge and available resources) of the 12 can be applied to care in a austere situation. In particular, the knowledge of sanitation, germ theory, oral rehydration therapy, and simple manufactured antibiotics and anaesthetic agents all have the potential to be able to be continued to be applied in a post-disaster situation and to continue to contribute to a high quality of low-tech health care. In the same way that we can substantially reduce childhood death rates in a low tech post-disaster situation, we can still continue to have access to some of the biggest advances in medicine even at the end of the world.
4. Surgery in the third world
A non-specialist surgeon working at a isolated bush hospital in Papua New Guinea published his experience of Emergency Surgery over a 14 month period (similar articles have been published with similar data):
Emergency Surgery 243
Tendon repair 33 Open orthopaedics 32 Dilation and curettage 31 General surgery 29 Incision and drainage 26 Laceration repair 26 Obstetrics 23 Manipulation under anaesthesia 15 Urology 15 Gynaecology 9 Ear, nose and throat 2
Emergency anaesthesia 243
Ketamine – spontaneous breathing 166 Local anaesthesia 33 Ketamine – ventilated 16 Spinal anaesthesia 12 Propofol / thiopentone 10 Epidural 5 Epidural / GA 1
The point of this reference is to help illustrate what someone can achieve in primitive conditions with no formal surgical training and no dedicated anaesthetist. We are not suggesting that the average layperson can safely practice to this extent or breadth of surgery, but it does demonstrate that a non-surgeon can achieve much. It also shows that most anaesthetics for surgery in an austere situation can be done under local or ketamine anaesthetics.
Why this is relevant?
Each of these four references gives you insights, one way or another, into low-tech austere health care. First, it gives you an insight into the likely clinical problems that you may see in a survival situation, and how much can be dealt with in that sort of austere environment. Second, it demonstrates how medically speaking it is the small things and simple knowledge which save lives and some of the biggest killers can be mitigated with these relatively low level interventions or strategies.
In our opening summary – “Medicine at that end of the world”, we describe a pretty bleak medical reality post-SHTF. Will million’s really die from lack of access to modern heath care as we have alleged?
The short answer is yes – many will die much sooner than they otherwise would have, from disease and injury, which currently are not immediately fatal. But the answer is not nearly that simple nor bleak. The reality is that while cancer, diabetes, malnutrition or serious injury may claim many of its victim’s sooner than with today’s health care, most health problems can be treated or mitigated to a degree in a low- tech environment, with a narrow range of medications and interventions – including some cancers, non- insulin requiring diabetes and many major traumatic injuries.
Most medical problems are relatively mundane and not life threatening. Truly catastrophic problems in medicine are fortunately rare. You should focus on learning and preparing to deal with the common problems, and doing common procedures well, and you will save lives, and possibly also improve the quality of those lives.
There will be a significant change to health care but with knowledge and some preparation it isn’t quite as dire as many (including our own opening paragraph) predict. "

NKD: Shiro Kamo Akuma nakiri, Hatsukokoro Sentan cleaver
New rectangle day!
I've only tested on some carrots so far, but I can tell right away that I'm gonna love the Shiro Kamo. It's light and nimble. The balance point is right where I wanna put my index finger, giving a balanced feel in hand. Glides through carrots. The choil and spine are not super rounded, but they're not sharp either. It's adequate imo; doesn't bother me when holding/using the knife. My one gripe is the big, gaping hole between the handle and tang. Surely you should be able to expect a sealed handle? So now not-handy me has to seal it. I've heard epoxy is the thing to use? Advice appreciated. Overall, though, very happy with my new nakiri. Thanks to everyone on this sub who's constantly recommending Shiro Kamo.
The cleaver needs some work. Sharpness OOTB is not great. It's thick behind the edge, so much so that there's barely a millimetre between the cladding line and the edge; less in places. So it wedges. Sounds like I'm cutting carrots with an axe. Crack, crack. I think after some thinning I might like it, though. The weight feels good in hand. Balance point is further forward, as expected for a cleaver. With a standard pinch grip it feels blade-heavy, or you can choke up and do a modified peace-sign grip for a more balanced feel. It's rough and rustic, which I find charming. A bit of rounding on the choil and spine; not a lot, but it's enough. The bolster is wonky, which is aesthetically displeasing, but I don't notice it when holding/using the knife. There's some flecks of kurouchi (I think) near the edge, but they'll come off during thinning/sharpening, so it's not a big deal.
I was drawn to this knife because I wanted to try a Chinese cleaver and was intrigued by the notion of a traditional Chinese-made knife with Japanese steel and stainless cladding. And it's Hatsukokoro, I'd heard they commission good things. A lot of sites say the shirogami 2 is heat treated to be less hard than usual. At least one site suggests that it's made less hard in favour of greater toughness. Some sites say 58-60 HRC, others say 60-61 HRC, so who knows what it really is. It's made by an unknown Chinese knifesmith. It's a bit mysterious. Unfortunately, my verdict is that if you want a knife that performs well OOTB, this ain't it. I suspect that it has the potential to be a good knife, but it's gonna take hours on the stones to get this thing slicing fit. So don't buy it unless you're confident on the stones and want a project.
The stats:

2024.05.14 08:53 Frosty_Seallover My trip to Qufu

Visited Confucius cemetery, temple, and Kong mansion in Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius. Had an English speaking tour guide who told me fascinating things.
Confucius was the only son from his father’s third wife who was 40 years younger. When he was born, the top of his skull was indented like the shape of a bowl that could hold water.
At the temple built to honor him, dragons were carved with 5 fingers which is usually only reserved for emperors. Confucius was highly respected and treated like an emperor (unfortunately 400 years after his death). When emperors visited the temple to pay respect, the pillars were covered with red fabric so that emperors would not be jealous of the craftsmanship which was better than pillars in the Forbidden City.
Direct descendants of Confucius were declared noble and given special titles 900 years ago that lasts until today and the direct descendent currently lives in Taiwan. This is the longest surviving Chinese noble family. Worldwide there are 2 million descendants of Confucius, my grandmother being a 72nd generation descendant. Each generation has the same middle character which can be seen on the family tree photo. In line with this, my grandmothers name is Kong Xian Y.
The trees in Qufu at Confucius sites are interestingly twisted. I’ve seen this in Sedona where energy vortexes shape trees in similar ways. Was told that Chinese people consider this area to have a lot of energy.
Wonderful trip and if anyone wants to visit, I highly recommend staying at the JW Marriott which is a 10 minute walk from the temple and you’ll get to experience ancient Chinese architecture with comfortable modern interior. There are locals parked outside ready to take you to local restaurants and will tell you stories about Confucius in mandarin for about $2. We had a ride (also 72nd generation descendant!) that stayed with us for 4 hours taking us to each location and helped us find an English speaking tour guide for 100 rmb ($14). The tour guide charged 400 ($52). Totally worth the stop on my trip through Shandong.

  • The White House has ordered a Chinese-linked company, MineOne Partners Limited, and its partners to sell property near a U.S. Air Force base in Wyoming due to national security concerns.
  • This directive highlights increasing U.S. concerns about Chinese-led acquisitions of American property near sensitive military sites, potentially posing spying risks.
  • CFIUS, a Treasury Department-led panel, plays a vital role in scrutinizing foreign investments in the U.S. for national security risks, underscoring the balance between open investment and national security.
  • Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized CFIUS's critical role in ensuring that foreign investments do not undermine U.S. national security, especially concerning sensitive military installations and technologies.
  • The property in question is located within close proximity (1 mile) to Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, a key component of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, intensifying the spying risk concerns.
In 2022, the Biden administration was investigating Chinese telecom giant Huawei over concerns that its gear installed in U.S. cell towers could capture and transmit sensitive information from military bases and missile silos to China. This investigation underscores the breadth of security concerns associated with foreign technological presence near critical infrastructure.
"The proximity of the foreign-owned Real Estate to a strategic missile base and key element of America's nuclear triad, and the presence of specialized and foreign-sourced equipment potentially capable of facilitating surveillance and espionage activities, presents a national security risk to the United States," the White House said in a statement.
The MineOne Partners deal, involving property near sensitive U.S. military sites, was subject to review by CFIUS, revealing the complex interplay between encouraging foreign investment and protecting national security. This scenario illustrates how geopolitical considerations can directly impact business operations and property transactions in today's interconnected world.

2024.05.14 03:38 City_Index USD/CNH: AUD, NZD, JPY face hammering if Asia’s FX anchor comes loose. May 14, 2024

USD/CNH: AUD, NZD, JPY face hammering if Asia’s FX anchor comes loose. May 14, 2024
By : David Scutt, Market Analyst
  • The Chinese yuan is trading at multi-year highs against the currencies of its major trading partners
  • This strength has helped to counteract rampant US dollar strength, preventing larger losses for Asian FX names in 2024
  • With the risk of an escalating trade war with the US, Chinese policymakers may be tempted to weaken the yuan to help with exporter competitiveness
  • A revival of large-scale Fed rate cuts bets may provide respite for battered Asian FX names
If you trade Asian currencies like the Japanese yen, Australian or New Zealand dollar, you should always keep a close eye on what’s happening in the Chinese yuan. Especially this week. Because with trade wars between China and the United States set to erupt again, and with a raft of top tier US economic data scheduled, what happens in USD/CNH will be highly influential for other Asian currencies.

CNH performance influential on JPY, AUD & NZD

As the currency of the world’s second largest economy rising rapidly up the ranks of the most traded FX names worldwide, you’re doing yourself a disservice if the Chinese yuan is not on your radar. As seen in the chart below, for large periods of time, movements in USD/CNH have often been mirrored by USD/JPY, AUD/USD and NZD/USD.
https://preview.redd.it/yd4hx6wmpa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf1aa3b7d74c44631915dc68559b0a17b9c43846
Up until recently, USD/CNH and USD/JPY had a positive correlation in the high 0.8s on a rolling quarterly basis. For AUD/USD and NZD/USD, negative correlations above -0.9 were regularly observed over the same timeframe during the past year.
While the common denominator is the US dollar, with its movements influential across the entire FX market, what is not readily known right now is the Chinese yuan is not weak but strong when you look at its performance against a basket of currencies from its major trading partners, hitting levels not seen October 2022 in April. It’s only really been weakening against the greenback.

CNH an anchor for Asian FX names

Even though it’s not been enough to offset the impact of the strong US dollar entirely, measures from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) to curb market forces seeking to weaken the yuan against the dollar have likely helped limit losses in other Asian FX names against the big dollar, making the yuan somewhat of an anchor for currencies in the region. Hence, if this anchor were to come loose, it’s very likely Asian FX names would be hammered.
One only needs to look back to the yuan devaluation episode in 2015 to what may happen. And that was when the yuan’s influence was considerably smaller than it is today.

Trend breakdown may explain weakening relationships

While the yuan has often had strong relationships with the likes of the JPY, AUD and NZD, that’s faded somewhat in recently. Rather than being less influential on currencies across the region, the breakdown of strong established trends in other asset classes may explain the waning relationship, resulting in choppy price action as traders and investors wait for definitive signals as to which direction markets will move next.
When new trends become established, it would be surprising if the relationship between the yuan and other Asia FX names does not strengthen again.

Trade war risk adds to devaluation threat

If you’re looking for a major catalyst that could spark a trend change, look no further than the threat of an escalating trade war between the United States and China.
If media reports are on the money, US President Joe Biden will quadruple tariffs on Chinese made electric vehicles and sharply increase levies for other green energy industries in an announcement later Tuesday, opening the door for other western governments to do the same given a concerted push to foster local green initiatives.
As mentioned above, Chinese policymakers have been pushing back against market forces seeking to weaken the yuan, setting the midpoint of the USD/CNY daily trading band far stronger than market forces would imply for months on end.
While not a certainty, the threat posed to China’s trade-exposed sectors from greater import barriers abroad, at a time when policymakers are fighting to prevent the yuan from weakening further, you don’t have to be Einstein to see why authorities may be temped to devalue the yuan to support its export sector.
If China were to go down that path, it would likely lead to a rapid appreciation in the US dollar, generating substantial volatility not only in Asian FX names but broader financial markets. As such, watching the daily USD/CNY fix may be advantageous near-term. If a devaluation episode were to occur, it would likely be initiated at the start of onshore yuan.

USD bull case also its biggest threat

Outside the threat posed by trade wars, the other potential catalyst than could spark a trend change comes from the US economic data calendar with CPI, PPI and retail sales figures for April released over the next 48 hours.
For the US dollar, uncomfortably sticky inflationary pressures have been a major factor behind its strength this year, combining with strong, above-trend economic growth to delay the start of the Federal Reserve’s rate cutting cycle.
https://preview.redd.it/48iobvyrpa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=db6418194004169e8f6dfd4feaaccb9c3b1d6067
With these factors part of an established trend, markets now expect it, helping to prevent sustained periods of weakness from occurring. However, now that the number of rate cuts priced in 2024 has fallen from nearly seven to less than two, it’s now up to the data to keep feeding the prevailing narrative. If it doesn’t – as seen when nonfarm payrolls and ISM services data whiffed earlier this month – it can result in an abrupt weakness in the US dollar.
The more data that disappoints, the greater the risk it may encourage traders to unwind bullish bets and result in sustained dollar weakness. In other words, good news is arguably already priced in.

USD/CNH technical outlook

Adding to the sense that this week may be important for broader directional risks for Asian FX names, USD/CNH sits at an interesting juncture on the daily chart, threatening to surge straight back into the uptrend it was trading in for much of the year.
https://preview.redd.it/i3p101rypa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=e9746fc6e2cce9745a4fe15e33e299736adce5cb
The bounce from the lows struck Friday two weeks ago has been powerful, seeing USD/CNH do away with two horizontal resistance levels at 7.2200 and 7.2335 before breaking through and closing above the 50 and 200-day moving averages on Monday.
With the downtrend in RSI threatening to break and MACD crossing over from below, directional risks look to be turning higher for USD/CNH. Aside from former uptrend support and horizontal resistance around 7.2550, there’s not a lot standing between USD/CNH and return to levels seen in late 2023.
While buying dips looks preferable to selling rallies near-term, it may pay to see how the price action evolves around these levels over the next 48 hours given ample event risk.
Another push and the pair will be back in its former uptrend, allowing for fresh longs to be established targeting a move towards the 2024 highs. A stop order placed below either the trendline or 50/200DMA zone would offer protection against reversal.
Alternatively, should the price fail to hold above the 50 and 200DMA, stops could be placed above this zone, allowing for fresh short positions to be established targeting a retracement towards 7.1730.
Either way, if we do see a meaningful directional shift in the yuan, it’s likely the Japanese yen, Aussie and New Zealand dollars will be following close behind.

2024.05.14 02:40 weeemrcb Any Recommended remote desktop tools for 2024 that can utilise (nginx) reverse proxy ?

A long time ago I used to use Teamviewer to manage mine and my family's PC.
With the pandemic there followed remote work where I left my laptop there and remoted in to use.... just as Teamviewer were clamping down on business use. Which is fine, but their customer support were dire, so I tried Anydesk and was very happy with them and paid for a commercial licence ever since. Well worth it not to have to carry my laptop on the commute (old back injury).
I still am a fan of Anydesk, but recent security tightening at work led to the Anydesk ports being locked down. At first it was at our client site where I work, but I could still remote connect if my work VPN was on. Then my work also locked down the ports.
So I've been looking for alternatives and wondered if anyone had any suggestions? We have the usual homelab setup here with reverse proxy, proxmox, NAS, docker etc, so I have a lot of my home tools available to me at work through the proxy and I'm happy to self host, but it has to be secure if my work's laptop is connecting.
I had been looking at RustDesk which feels very similar to Anydesk and I think I might be able to use with NProxyManager(?), but from what I've seen in this reddit they may also have questionable ownership originating from CN.
Any recommendations welcome

2024.05.14 01:55 lalaen Beginner’s Guide to Taobao

Would love to add more links, search terms and shopping service recs to this post! I am NA-based so anything specific to other countries highly appreciated.
Taobao is a Chinese marketplace-style website. Seeing as it is in Chinese and you need to use Chinese search terms and a shopping service, the learning curve is fairly steep compared to a lot of online shopping. I've been shopping on Taobao for 10 years, so here is my best attempt at helping you learn how. I live in Canada, so for those with experience specific to non-NA countries please let me know and I can add more info on that.
I use Chrome to browse Taobao, because it can automatically translate into English. I'll also have Google Translate open in a tab set to 'Chinese Simplified'. You WILL need to make a Taobao account in order to browse the site (they've gotten worse about this, you may find that you need to log back in if you leave your computer idle for too long). I believe you need your phone to scan a QR code for this. Now, you can go ahead and type your search term into Google Translate, copy and paste into the Taobao search bar, and you're ready to go. Taobao is also great at suggesting search terms (if you paste 'lolita', it'll offer you searches for lolita shoes, headwear, dresses etc)
I personally ctrl+click anything I want to see to open it in a new tab so I can compare as I go!
When you're looking at a listing there's a few things you should look at. - The price is in Chinese yuan. Usually my browser puts my local currency underneath it, but if that's not the case keep that in mind and use a currency converter. - In the top lefthand corner is the shop name and under it is the rating. The rating system is 1-5 hearts, then 1-5 diamonds, then silver crowns, then gold crowns. Diamonds and silver crowns are most common, this part seems largely based on number of sales. Be a little wary of stores with hearts - sometimes they're just new, or small handmade stores, but they're often poor quality/scammy. - Next to that, across the top bar, are 3 numbers that are usually 4.something. This is the rating customers have given the store. Anything under 4.6 is for sure pretty bad. - The right hand side of the bar has an 'enter the shop' button you can use to look at other stuff in the store
Make sure you look at the pictures in the listing. Ideally, they will be high quality and unique pictures, a nice set of them that shows images of all angles and details of the product. If you're searching around comparing different listings, you will notice a lot of them steal photos or use the same photos. These tend to be the listings you get a mass-produced, low quality product from... not always wish/temu quality, but often! Sometimes it's worth the risk, sometimes it isn't. You'll also start to notice a sort of 'floor' to the price/quality of various item types. If something is suspiciously cheap, there's usually a reason. 5$ wigs and 20$ JSKs are not going to be good, but 10-15$ wigs and 50-60$ JSKs are generally going to be nice, and if you spend 30 on a wig or 80-100 on a dress, you'll usually be really impressed with the quality.
A few more tips when picking out items: - You will need to pay domestic shipping to the shopping service, it's about 2$ but adds up if you're buying a lot of small items from different shops. Always check out the shop and see if there's anything else you'd like, especially if you're looking for a generic item. - Some items are preordedownpayment. Check with your shopping service to find out how they want these done if you'd like one, and make sure you find the 'final price' (usually listed near the top of the description) - The easiest way to browse stores is often clicking 'view all baby' which is 'all products'. - Most shopping services won't buy things with magnets, batteries or liquids. Some will, but will only ship them through the most expensive shipping methods, so be aware of that! They're also a bit weird about electronics and wooden items. - In case you're looking at cosplay stuff, prop weapons WILL be seized by customs! - Most clothing items include a measurement chart. It's in cm, and I usually use google translate on my phone to translate the photo (though admittedly I can recognize the character for bust measurement in context, by now lol). Shoe sizes are Chinese sizes, look up a comparison chart to find your size! - Really heavy things will be expensive to ship. - Some items are made to order and will take a lot longer to send to your shopping service. It will usually say it somewhere on the listing.
Once you know what you'd like to buy, it's time for the shopping service. I use Yoybuy, I find it trustworthy and easy to use. There's other good services, but I can't personally vouch for them. With Yoybuy, you simply paste the URL of the item you want into the search bar, and it loads up for you to add to your cart with the same options it had on Taobao. Fill your cart with your items and pay when you're ready. The order will then go through to purchasing, where you can watch and see when each item is successfully bought and shipped. Any issues with the purchasing/items in general will pop up in a chat next to the item, such as clarifying a colour option or telling you a size is out of stock. If you're in NA, all of the action is going to happen overnight. Some things will arrive in 1 or 2 days, some might take up to 2 weeks. Once your items arrive at the service, select them and submit them for shipping. You'll be able to pick from a variety of shipping services with a variety of price points and arrival times.
Shopping service tips: - Shopping services have a service fee. It's usually a percent of what you spend. Back when I started shopping, the ones with the lowest fees were usually difficult to use and/or had bad service, but ymmv. Generally speaking you pay the fee at the time of shipping. - Some services offer photos of items if you need them verified for some reason. They usually charge for this, but it is worth it if you're paranoid about a high ticket item. - Many services allow payment through Paypal, but Paypal is VERY picky about 'sensitive' or 'counterfeit' items. I literally have no idea what flags a lot of these items as sensitive, it seems at complete random to me. I recommend credit card for this reason - though I've heard some of the wire transfer services are preferable in other countries, and I've seen those widely accepted too. - Some shops on Taobao will ship internationally with no shopping service. It's my understanding that this isn't all shops, nor is it all countries they ship to, and they may not have representatives that speak any English, which you may or may not need. You can look into it if you only want things from one shop, but imo it's a lot more trouble than it's worth for people in Canada and the US.
Shipping tips: - It's hard to estimate shipping... freight/SAL used to be approximately 10usd/kg, but I'm pretty sure it's gone up. It will be expensive, but depending on the type of item it isn't that bad. I believe 30$ is the absolute minimum for China to NA. Some of the shipping services also do dimensional weight, so any bulky or long items will throw it off. I presume the shipping services available also depend on country. - Generally speaking, package insurance is optional. I've never lost a package, but I did have one disappear for a bit and I had one water damaged one. Insurance is under 20$ in my experience. - You will need to pick the value you're declaring the package for. I consistently under declare and have never had problems, but I try to keep it reasonable-ish. A 10kg box that's marked as worth 50usd is probably suspicious. - If you want to use SAL it's going to take at least 2 weeks, and it's really inconsistent. So definitely don't use it if you need anything for a certain date. - If you bought anything with liquids, magnets, electronics etc; separate them out and send less items with them. The shipping methods that accept them will be super expensive for anything with significant weight. Some countries may not allow import of these items at all.
Let's get into some fun stuff!

Biden blocks Chinese-backed crypto mining firm from land ownership near Wyoming missile base
President Joe Biden on Monday issued an order blocking a Chinese-backed cryptocurrency mining firm from owning land near a Wyoming nuclear missile base, calling its proximity to the base a “national security risk.”
The order forces the divestment of property operated as a crypto mining facility near the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base. MineOne Partners Ltd., a firm partly backed by Chinese nationals, and its affiliates are also required to remove certain equipment on the site.
The Monday divestment order was made in coordination with the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States — a little-known but powerful government committee tasked with investigating corporate deals for national security concerns that holds power to force companies to change ownership structures or divest completely from the U.S.
A 2018 law granted CFIUS the authority to review real estate transactions near sensitive sites across the U.S., including F.E. Warren Air Force Base.

2024.05.14 01:23 MunSapMawWhiRang Chinese sa OLJ????

Hi po. I’m a VA and I also take on the task of recruiting and hiring talents for different job openings where I’m currently employed.
We’re using OnlineJobsPh to source candidates.
Kahapon may nagapply sa isang job opening namin na Product Sourcing Specialist. He’s Chinese and based sa resume nya he graduated sa Chinese univs and sa cover letter nya he said he’s from China. Ang weird kasi as far as I recall, sa Discord server lang namin at OLJ ako nagpost ng job description. Afaik OLJ is for Filipinos lang diba kasi they would require you to verify your identity using IDs that are issued in the Philippines. And chineck ko rin, they only allow Filipino citizens to use the site and register as a worker.
He confirmed that he saw the job posting sa OLJ but when I tried searching for his name and his email, walang match. Idk if napaparanoid lang ako pero alarming ba to? Lalo na sa recent issues ngayon.
Any similar cases?

2024.05.13 23:37 Forever_Olivia [US Based] Higurashi Merch Odds & Ends, Items for Sale!

Hi everyone! I’ve recently started moving and have decided to streamline my collection. For that reason, I wanted to give the subreddit a chance to snag up some of my goods since it can be hard to come by without a proxy and secondhand sites are packing on too many fees. Everything I am offloading is from the OG series or GOU/SOTSU, and shipping is free if you’re in the US. You can find me active in figurine subreddits and sites for reviews as needed. I am a Sonozaki twins collector with several hundred items logged so I keep myself busy! Prices are matched or below Japanese going prices. Payment through PP G&S preferred.
Photos: https://imgur.com/a/6nKzkdE
Price guide: Mion, Keiichi, Satoshi rubber straps (from 10th anniversary sale, 2016) — $14 shipped a piece, can bundle for $2 less per strap.

Analogy sealed CD (I also have the full size poster but would need to look into shipping) — $10 shipped. SOLD
Rena and Rika AmiAmi Blu-ray Purchase Bonus B4 size tapestry — $70 shipped. (Note: open to discussion here — I just have never seen this one hit the Japanese market second-hand but have seen other purchase benefit tapestries for $100 so going off of that price
consider it super rare as receivers had to buy the entire GOU dvd collection within a particular timeframe from AmiAmi!)
Rena, Satoko, Rika Pachinko machine parts (from 2013 Daiichi machines, parts removed from machine lol) — $25 shipped a piece, bundled for less. RENA SOLD
Artwork/thank you collab books — $15 shipped (bundled together). SOLD

2024.05.13 23:17 MightyMoosePoop [All] How an Amazon OP today is some evidence many socialists starve for capitalism reform like PRC or like centrally command economies like the USSR.

In an OP today titled, "Would Amazon exist in a purely socialist country?" socialist after socialist claimed quickly and with little to no qualifiers resounding "yes".
These "Yes" really told us nonsocialists a lot about you socialists. This was mind boggling. Mind boggling because the majority socialists on here reject Marxist-Leninist history (e.g., not socialism), but here many of you claim that Amazonon existing in a socialist country would be so obviously, "Yes". We are talking about an innovation company that is probably the most significant market global impact in the world since Ford's assembly line.
Ranking fifth in the world in terms of market cap with a staggering $1.045 trillion (CompaniesMarketCap, 2023), Amazon has been able to cement itself as a global giant that has altered how we shop and live. Expanding beyond just delivering goods, it is also a media streaming service and manufactures other technologies such as “Alexa”. Amazon has quickly become one of the most recognizable company names throughout the world. It has achieved such success that it has become commonly used as a verb in everyday language, much like “Google.” However, like many other large corporations today such as Google and Facebook, Amazon started out as a small business building its way up to being a large corporation. The History of Amazon and its Rise to Success – Michigan Journal of Economics (umich.edu)
This leads me to conclude a few things about socialists on here:
The reason most of you are in denial is how much leadership and venture capital businesses like Amazon take. These concepts are the antithesis of what most of you hold dear to "socialism". These are disruptors to the economy.
I cannot understate the following enough and why socialists are particularly bad at the following. If you seek benefits then what are the costs???
In this case, Amazon is going to change jobs for millions of workers and even workers are going to lose jobs. Right now, Amazon has a pharmacy. It is going to put a strain on local pharmacies and some will go under. How is that pro workers?
Pro consumers? YES
Then, mostly Amazon is not a producer but a third party. So they are almost no matter what you do a capitalist model. As they are going in order to function have to profit off of other industries - profit off of workers. Thus this means for most of you socialists you have to enact forms of laws, edicts, or some form of constitutional framework to protect "the workers" from being exploited by Amazon.
The simplest answer is to nationalize Amazon. Hence my last two bullet points of either being a full-blown Soviet Union centrally planned economy (or similar form) or going the Dengist route and overseeing the company by the socialist worker's party. These simple answers leaves out most if not all libertarian and anarchist socialists on this sub. So the answer is most all socialists should be "NO!" to that op. But where are they?
Lastly, that's me working through the problem. Those reading this may have other ideas. I'm not saying I have all the answers. I'm saying it is really sad I have more ideas than the socialists on that thread. The socialists on the thread just seem to go, "Yes" like it will be no problem - smh. And that is really telling how in the clouds most socialists are and don't take the economic realities of their ideology.
tl;dr Something stinks and isn't on the so-called capitalism side.

2024.05.13 21:01 Jonography Has anyone ordered to the UK from the Skilhunt website? How long was delivery?

I’m looking to buy x2 Skilhunt H200 minis. I can’t seem to get that particular model on the Chinese sites unless I’ve missed one (for example Aliexpress). I think the only way to get one is on The Skilhunt website. Did delivery to UK go okay? How long did it take? Did you need to pay import fees?
I have a trip in about 5-6 weeks and wondering if it will just be problematic.

I was thinking about the fact that it seems pretty reasonable to call somebody up and talk on the phone about something you talk about on reddit everyday... but some people are nervous about this. Why? It's a phone call. Is it the public nature of the phone call? In a coffee shop it's public too... but it's not scrutinized.
Being wrong... is that the big worry? We all have trouble saying Chinese words, remembering Chinese names, and explaining Zen concepts that the Chinese themselves were uncomfortable with. What's the standard for public conversations when it comes to knowledge? Does that standard mean less people want to talk publicly?

2024.05.13 19:36 doppyohsint Proxy

O destino recebe a solicitação do proxy e responde a ela.

2024.05.13 19:13 DistanceTypical3942 Letsencrypt (npm) create certificate with an existing name.

Good day people! I need to clear up an existential doubt I'm having... here's the scenario:
I have my site www.misitio.com.ar hosted on GoDaddy using GoDaddy's DNS with an SSL issued by GoDaddy itself. I want to migrate that site to Google Cloud, and for that, I have set up a web server with Apache and on the other hand an NPM as a reverse proxy. When I try to create the proxy host for my site (www.misitio.com.ar) in NPM and create a certificate for it with Let's Encrypt, it throws an error (Some challenges have failed.). But if I create a proxy host like prueba.misitio.com.ar (which is not generated in GoDaddy), it generates it without any issues. The reasoning I have is that Let's Encrypt cannot generate a certificate with that name that is already generated by GoDaddy. How should I proceed to get Let's Encrypt to generate the certificate correctly so I can migrate my site without any issues? Thank you very much! I really appreciate the help...

2024.05.13 18:50 Reaction-Consistent Driver Automation Tool - Has anyone successfuly used this?

msendpointmgr.com has what appears to be a very useful tool for managing driver packages, aptly named - Driver Automation Tool. but after half a dozen times trying to use this tool over probably the same number of years, I've begun to ask myself - has anyone ever gotten this tool to work in their enterprise environment?? It appears to be geared to run in a very open environment, i.e. no proxies (or security apps serving as web proxies) and maybe even intended to be installed directly on the primary. I really would like to use this tool, but even after installing a fairly vanilla W11 system with no security apps, just domain joined, made my user account a member of the local admin group, installed required .net components, etc. Still this app fails to download driver cabs of any sort - the ps window shows errors about the set-location command and not being able to find the site, yet earlier in the PS script window, I see it did find the site code just fine, so does it need a local install of the config manager console? Frustratingly complicated for something that has been around quite a while and is still being developed. Probably my fault for not reading all of the documentation on it.
