2024.04.28 22:48 DrakeBoi13 My Chill Challenge is complete! (Team info included)
| Finished a simple challenge of Fire Red! Rules were simple: utilize Pokémon I never use, don’t use items in battle, and keep my team well under level caps to maintain as high of a challenge as possible without permadeath. I also made sure to strictly stick to only using these 6 Pokemon, and grew extremely attached to each one way more than I expected! A little bit about each of my team members (in order I added to the team, not as shown in pictures): 1.) Hux (Blastoise, lvl 50) - My starter. I have always chosen Charmander or Bulbasaur, so starting with Squirtle was completely fresh. Holy cow was Hux surprisingly fast though! He was the only member with a Dark move in Bite, so he held the Blackglasses for most of the run until the E4. I knew he was going to be one of the strongest team members, so he stayed in the back for the most part. Going into the E4, he was the lowest level member, but he shot up to a tied 3rd place with how integral he was as a defensive pivot with Leftovers. Very solid, would use again. 2.) Fux (Primeape, lvl 54) - My ace, and it’s not even close. Primeape, out of all the other mons, I have used the “most” (Annihilape was one of my aces in Scarlet), but I wanted to see how he would do in an older game. All I can say is, wow. Bulk up and Cross chop did most of his work later on, but surprisingly Thunder gave him a super unique tool I did not expect to fit as well as it did! His most memorable feats include: soloing the Fighting Dojo while 5 levels under the leader, soloing Sabrina’s Alakazam at level 37, clearing Seafoam Islands and soloing Articuno around level 40, soloing Bruno, and playing a huge part in taking down Agatha, Lance, and the Champion (named Sux, for reasons you might be noticing). Definitely brought Primeape into my top 10 Pokemon of all time, I love mah boi Fux ❤️ 3.) Pux (Parasect, level 50) - My sleeper, in multiple ways. Everyone knows Paras is…. Bad. Parasect, not much better. Using Pux was painful, to say the least, but eventually it started clicking; she might be slow, but she started hitting like a truck once she learned Dig and Slash. However, her biggest role came when she learned Spore. If she outsped or lived just 1 turn, I had a way to bring anyone in and wreck, even in the E4. One of my support cores, and I’m so proud of her. 4.) Snux (Arbok, lvl 45) - My intimidator. In general, poison isn’t considered a very defensive typing. But, when I needed a resisted pivot or a quick Attack reduction, switching her in did the trick. I was very surprised with how useful she ended up being, and I was switching in to Snux frequently even in the E4 fights; with Dig, she clowned on Lorelai’s Cloyster who kept on going for Dive, which was hilarious. Screech was also a great tool to help the other members take out tougher threats. I definitely underestimated her at first, but she earned her spot 10 times over! 5.) Du- Wait…. What do you mean Farfetched is only called Dux in Gen 1?!?! What is he called in Gen 3? … 5.) Ch’Ding (Farfetch’d, lvl 52) - My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined. If you didn’t notice the naming convention, all of my team members have -ux at the end. Even my trainer’s name is “Tux”. My wife had a grand old time when I told her what happened; but even though Ch’Ding was disappointing from a naming viewpoint, he did not disappoint in battle. Up until the E4, this guy was my go-to if I wanted something dead NOW. The Stick made him crit almost reliably, and with Swords Dance he could sweep entire teams with a turn of setup. His biggest time to shine was soloing Moltres after clearing out Mt. Ember. Sadly, he didn’t see much play in the E4, but not for lack of trying; he did take out one of Agatha’s Gengars, which could have easily outsped and swept most of my team. In my heart, you’ll always be Dux, buddy. 6.) Crux (Marowak, lvl 48) - My baby. Last to join, I had to work hard to train Cubone up. She didn’t start with a Thick club, so I taught her Thief and hunted down a Cubone that I could steal one from. Despite being slow, Crux hit like a truck (or Trux, if you will). I like the story I had in my head of her being the child of the dead Marowak, so my head canon became that Ch’ding took her under his wing and taught her swordsmanship (after all, they both had Held Items that they use as weapons). She of course wiped out the top of Pokemon Tower, was integral in every fight against Giovanni that I could bring her to, and was also the one to take down Zapdos. Crux was very important in 1-shoting the Champion’s Alakazam before it wrecked Hux, who I needed to take out his last Arcanine. Despite being slow like Pux, Crux still did a great job and was quite the underdog in this run. All in all, I had to work hard to finish this challenge. Some fights took multiple tries, but being able to prevail without even coming close to the level caps was a great feeling, especially in the Elite Four where I was severely underlevelled. This run really made me get well acquainted with my team’s strengths and weaknesses to bring the most out of each of them, and I see them in a new light. If you are looking for a challenge that isn’t a nuzlocke, just use the underdogs; the underloved, the underrated, the underused. You’ll be surprised by how far they might take you! Now, time to start my next run in Leaf Green! I wonder how Pikachu and Onix will do… 🤔 submitted by DrakeBoi13 to PokemonFireRed [link] [comments] |

2024.04.28 20:30 Trandromeda Trip Report: Golden Route during sakura season and a wedding in Tokyo
Recently got back from an incredible 19 days in Japan. I’m really feeling the post-Japan blues now, but writing about the trip and sharing what I learned feels like a nice way to honour the memories I made.
I (35M) travelled to Japan with my partner (41M) from Canada. We were there from March 26 to April 13 - these dates were “chosen” for us because we were attending a wedding in Tokyo. We got to wear hakamas, walk in the procession at Meiji Jingu, and observe a Shinto wedding ceremony first-hand.
We did the Golden Route + Kanazawa, however, many travelers have already written about this route so I’ll try to offer new stories to interested readers instead.
About us and high-level trip summary:
- Our entire itinerary consisted of: Tokyo (+ trip to Kawaguchiko), Hakone, Osaka (+ trips to Himeji and Nara), Kyoto (+ trip to Hiroshima), Kanazawa (+ trip to Shirakawa-go), and then Tokyo again for the final night in Kichijoji.
- Stayed at a total of 7 hotels and made good use of the luggage delivery service. Usually took 1 day, but sometimes 2, so plan ahead.
- We got the JR West All Area Pass, which let us go to Hiroshima, Himeji, and Kanazawa from Osaka/Kyoto (plus a few other small trips). Not only was this worth it for us in terms of monetary value, but the built-in flexibility came in clutch i.e taking the train at our leisure and feeling much less stress over seat reservations or waiting in line. I used this website to help me determine which pass to get: https://www.japan-guide.com/railpass/
- As mentioned earlier, we attended our close friends’ wedding in Tokyo, which took place at Meiji Jingu and Meiji Kinenkan. It was a truly special and once-in-a-lifetime event. Being photographed by the sightseers at Meiji Jingu was also an interesting experience!
- We went out on weekend nights and checked out the popular places in Shinjuku Nichome (i.e the gay village). While they were fun, you need to dig deeper to find the places that make Nichome stand out from other gaybourhoods around the world.
- Did not make a lot of food reservations because we read how easy it was to find good food around every corner. We found this to be largely true and ate well on our trip (including many konbini meals and bento boxes on the train), but we look forward to diving deeper into the culinary world on trip #2.
- One of my favourite phrases was: Nani ga oishii desu ka? It means ‘What is tasty here?’ and is like asking the restaurant for their recommendation. I never got a bad result with this question.
- The ryokan, onsen, and kaiseki from our 1 night stay in Hakone were all amazing. It was probably our favourite room and meal on the trip. We would certainly return to Hakone and stay 2 nights next time.
- Saw a geisha performance in Kanazawa that was geared towards visitors and it was so fun and fascinating. My partner got to play taiko drums with a geisha!
- The big tourist must-sees were nice, but I’ll fondly remember all the times we just wandered the streets, witnessing small slices of other people’s lives.
- Kichijoji ended up being our favourite area of Tokyo.
- I planned this trip meticulously, but many items still ended up falling through or needed to be re-arranged due to various reasons (fatigue, sickness, timing mistakes). I think you will need to make peace with this and be prepared to be flexible with your plans, outside of pre-booked reservations.
Detailed report:
Before the flight
There were a few things we did before the trip began to help us out:
- Picked up a Wise card, allowing us to withdraw cash without paying extra fees. The fees can really add up.
- Reserved a pocket wifi router for pick-up at Narita.
- Made reservations for popular activities, namely the Ghibli Museum and USJ Express Pass.
- Adjusted our bodies to the new timezone a few days before our flight using an app called Timeshifter.
- Installed the Japan Travel by NAVITIME app, which I preferred over Google Maps when it came to anything involving the shinkansen.
- Watched Perfect Days, a meditative film that follows a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. It got us even more excited for Japan, plus the washrooms featured in this film are real and inspired us to look out for them in real life!
Landing in Japan
- After passing through customs, we picked up the pocket wifi router we had reserved. There are multiple drop-off locations, so you can pick up at one location and drop off at another. We chose the plan that gave us unlimited data for 3 weeks and it was worth it.
- I wanted to get our IC cards, but the line at the JR ticket office was so long that we just opted to buy individual tickets to take the Keisei Access Express. If you are going to be staying near any major metro stations (Ueno, Tokyo, Shinjuku, a few others), you can go there for your tickets because the lines seem to be shorter and you’ll ideally be rested by then.
- I got my IC card at Ueno Station. On the ground floor, at the JR travel centre, you can line up for the Suica. However, I really wanted the cute Pasmo Passport instead. It took some asking around, but we eventually found the ticket office in the metro station, which is underground and had no line at all. We showed our passports and picked up our Pasmo cards without issue. It’s cash only.
- I also purchased an eSIM from Airalo. It was my first time doing so and I found the process fairly straightforward. I only got 3 gigabytes of data, which was for situations where I might find myself separated from my partner (who held onto the pocket wifi). Ended the trip with over 1gb remaining.
- On our first night, we wandered and found some restaurants in the alleyways behind our train station; we ate delicious ramen for around ¥800. It’s true what they say about your first night being a write-off, however, so don’t expect to do much else.
A note about the trains and ticketing system
I loved taking the shinkansen, they were so comfortable and predictable. The ticketing system, however... that’s a different story entirely. I think everyone just has to go through it like a rite of passage. I also couldn’t get SmartEx to work, which would’ve saved us a lot of hassle.
Regarding the JR West pass, I learned that you can’t make online seat reservations with it after you pick up the physical pass. You must use a specific machine or visit a ticket desk. To use the machines, find the ones with the green head boards and then select the option that mentions using a ‘discount ticket’ or something like that. Insert your pass and choose the destination and train you want to take. You’ll then get your pass back along with the printed tickets. Fortunately, there’s usually an attendant there to help you out.
I will miss having bento on the train while watching the scenery pass by (and listening to Fujii Kaze, haha).
March 26 - 28: A gentle introduction to Japan.
Places: Asakusa, Akihabara, Ueno, Ginza, and Chiyoda
Hotel: Route-Inn Grand Tokyo Asakusabashi
We chose this area because it was budget-friendly and gave us easy access to all the places we planned on visiting. A lot of people recommend staying in Asakusa, but we found Asakusabashi to be even quieter and cheaper.
Highlights: - Itoya Ginza is a stationary lover’s paradise. Each of the ten floors is immacuately curated, filled with beautiful things to look at and use. If that wasn’t enough, a nature-inspired soundtrack plays the entire time to really put you in the mood. I picked up a Shupatto bag and liked it so much (great design and durability) that I went back and bought a few more as gifts.
- I found a place called the Okuno Building and it felt like a hidden gem for anyone who’s into art and architecture. Try to time your visit with when Room 306 is open: https://room306project.tokyo/about-en/
- Stepping outside of Tokyo Station, you feel small and the grandeur of Tokyo really hits you. Across the station in the building with the Beams store, there’s an observation deck that offers a gorgeous nighttime view of the area. There’s also a food hall with a great energy and vibe.
- About 10-15 minutes walk north of Akihabara station is an artisanal market tucked away beneath the train tracks. It was quiet and cute with a lot of interesting shops. Many handmade giftable items to be found: https://www.cntraveler.com/shops/tokyo/aki-oka-artisan
- I had a reservation for the Final Fantasy Eorzea Cafe in Akihabara - it was something I had wanted to do for a long time, though it felt underwhelming in the end. The food and drinks were photogenic, but forgettable. There are a number of cafes like these around and I imagine the gimmick is similar in each (at least, the ones run by Pasela Resorts). Still, no regrets!
Notes: - Most of the hotels we stayed at did not allow use of stairs except in emergencies. This was usually fine, but during one busy morning rush we waited a ludicrously long time to get down from the 4th floor! We became acquainted with a charming Japanese woman as a result of waiting for the elevator, so there was a silver lining.
March 29 - April 3: Unforgettable memories made over a weekend.
Places: Shinjuku, Shibuya, teamLab, Kawaguchiko, and the wedding
Hotel: Yuen Shinjuku
Atmospheric hotel. Situated on a quiet street in Shinjuku while remaining within walking distance to all the fun places. Onsen on the top floor with amazing city views.
Highlight: The wedding - To prepare for the wedding, we had a fitting at a kimono rental shop (Vasara) along with some friends. The men in the group wore hakamas, which are like trousers reserved for very formal occasions. Wearing a kimono and hakama was interesting - there’s a lot of tucking and wrapping under those robes, forcing you to stand straight while also having your organs squeezed in. But damn did we feel and look good in them, haha.
- The wedding itself was one of the most gorgeous and well-organized weddings I’ve ever been to and I’m still in a bit of awe. It began in the early morning with a Shinto ceremony at Meiji Jingu. The ritualistic garments worn by the bride and groom as well as the attendants were beautiful. After conducting the tea ceremony in a semi-private reception area, we gathered into a two-column procession and slowly walked to the main ceremonial site deeper within Meiji Jingu, led by a priest and two shrine maidens. Everything was solemn and immaculate. You can read about what these ceremonies are like online, but there were a lot of rituals, rules, and even audience participation e.g. standing, sitting, clapping, and drinking sake. Being photographed by hundreds of people while walking to and from the ceremonial site was also something I didn’t think I’d ever get to experience - I imagine this is what a celebrity feels like!
- The reception afterwards was at Meiji Kinenkan and followed a more familiar Western reception format, with an MC, music, multi-course meal, and live performances (including mochi pounding and spectacular Japanese Bollywood dancers) - but no dancing for the participants, haha. There was also an after-party at an Indian restaurant in Shibuya and it was a much more casual and colourful affair.
Highlight: Nichome - Nichome - one could easily miss this entire neighbourhood during the day, but boy does it come alive at night. We visited most of the major bars: Eagle, Eagle Blue, Dragon Men, Arty Farty, etc. What immediately struck me about those places was how similar they felt to bars back home i.e Toronto. There were lots of foreigners and the vibe and music reminded me of our own bars. It’s still a fun time and you can meet other travellers if you put yourself out there.
- When I said that one needs to dig deeper to find what makes Nichome stand out from other gaybourhoods, I was referring to the hundreds of tiny bars in the basements and upper levels of the buildings all around Nichome. To really get something out of this experience though, you need to either: i) speak Japanese, or ii) be accompanied by someone who can speak Japanese. I was lucky to fall into the latter group and had a few nights of uproarious karaoke, bantering with drag queens, and intimate conversations with bar staff.
Other highlights: - teamLab Planets was mind-blowing and I highly recommend anyone go at least once. The less you know about it, the better. The area around teamLab Planets (which includes the famous Toyosu Market) was also pleasant to walk around. In fact, we had a picnic by the water with a clear view of the Tokyo skyline.
- I find malls in Asia to be on another level and the one we visited - Shibuya Parco - was no exception. There was a large terrace on the top floor with expansive views of the city and the basement housed an impressive food hall with a wide range of cuisines. The floors in-between had many unique offerings as well, even if only to window shop.
- We found one of the washrooms from the film Perfect Days, the one in Nabeshima Shoto Park. The exterior was incredibly designed, though the interiors were just fine. The park also houses a tranquil pond that was nice for a stroll around and the neighbourhood itself was enjoyable to walk through.
- Got my hair cut at a place called Assort Tokyo with English-speaking hair stylists - shout out to Yutsuki who gave me one of the best cuts I’ve ever had!
- Karaoke Manekineko is prevalent in Japan and we had the fortune of going to one with our Japanese friends. It was fun, affordable, and equipped with all our favourite songs (both Japanese and English). Indulge in the bottomless drink machines - their corn soup is a best seller and after trying it myself, I can see why!
- Seeing Mt. Fuji in person is an out-of-this-world experience - pictures don’t do it justice. However, the popular places we visited (Chureito Pagoda, northern shore of the lake) were extremely busy despite the lack of cherry blossoms e.g. the queue to access the observation deck at Chureito was 1 hour long. Getting around Kawaguchiko also wasn’t easy or cheap - the buses were packed and unpredictable and taking a taxi across town cost us a pretty penny. If I were to return, I’d get a private tour guide or just stick to the not-famous places and aim to be there in the early morning.
Notes: - We switched hotels from Asakusabashi to Shinjuku and it was worthwhile to do so. We valued being able to walk to and from the bars, especially at night after the trains close
- I made the mistake of thinking we could get tickets on the express/direct train to Kawaguchiko the day before - nope. You should book these early. We took the shinkansen to Otsuki and then from there took a local train the rest of the way.
April 3 - 7: Embracing the calm after Tokyo.
Places: Hakone, Osaka, Himeji
Hotels: Mount View Hakone and Onyado Nono Osaka Yodoyabashi
The hotel in Hakone was itself the highlight. This one was a bit higher up in the mountains, but still easily accessible by bus. Top-notch hospitality and amenities. Our Osaka hotel was also comfortable and had an onsen and was located in a convenient area - not in the thick of things, but close to the important metro lines.
Highlights: - I wish we stayed longer at our Hakone ryokan. Their kaiseki dinner and breakfast were exquisite. The private onsen consisted of two large basins for our exclusive use with a view of an illuminated bamboo grove. That said, I think you could choose any 3+ star ryokan in Hakone and have a stellar time. The town was calm and charming; it was especially haunting with the light rain and mist when we were there.
- We took a bus that went directly from our hotel all the way to Odawara, where we caught the shinkansen to Osaka. Unlike at home, where riding the bus feels like a chore, I felt that taking the various transport options in Japan was an experience unto itself - always something to see and admire outside the window.
- Osaka’s nightlife was vibrant, though we preferred Shinsekai over Dotonbori if only because the former was way less crowded. I also went out to Doyamacho (Osaka’s gay district) on my own, which seemed tiny in comparison to Nichome. I visited the newly opened Eagle Osaka and met a Canadian expat; it was fun to hear stories about being gay in Japan from people who’ve lived there for a long time.
- Sunset at Osaka Castle with all the sakura was magical. The crowds were minimal here. My favourite shot to take was a close-up of the flowers with the castle in the background.
- My partner was very keen on visiting USJ and getting the Express Pass - I’m glad we did that because we got to experience (almost) everything we wanted to. Super Nintendo World was the absolute gem of USJ: going there felt like going to another dimension.
- Right outside USJ is a large shopping and restaurant complex. There’s a place on the fourth floor called TAKOPA Takoyaki Park and what a joy it was - pick any of the restaurants here, order a combo meal, and let your taste buds soar.
- Himeji is an easy day trip from Osaka and the famous castle is a straight walk down from the station. It was very picturesque - definitely visit the gardens while you’re there.
Notes: - My partner started to feel unwell at this point of the trip, so we had to slow down our pace and also reshuffle a few itinerary items.
April 7 - 10: Sakura, temples, and museums.
Places: Nara, Kyoto, Hiroshima
Hotel: TUNESTAY Kyoto
A modern hotel that also feels like a hostel with its communal amenities and young vibe. Rest assured, the rooms are private and include your own bathroom. Minutes away from Kyoto Station and situated on the same street as the sightseeing buses.
Highlights: - The sakura were now in full bloom and made for magnificent strolls around Kyoto’s famous districts, but like all other famous sites, they are best enjoyed early. We got up early for Philosopher’s Path and it was breathtaking and tranquil, just as we imagined it to be. It started to get crowded i.e noisier after 9am.
- The 10th floor of the Isetan building at Kyoto Station is a dedicated food hall, with one side being just ramen shops. Very yummy and very short lines!
- I read about how emotional the Hiroshima Peace Museum made people feel, but I still wasn’t prepared for the sheer gravity of it once we were there. I can only describe the experience as powerful and poignant. Certainly take your time to go through and read the cards on the exhibits. It was one of the rare places we visited that was both busy and quiet.
- Visit Okonomi-mura for delicious Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and good vibes. It’s another food hall, but one that feels much more down to earth and gritty.
- We happened to stumble upon a night market at Murayama Park in Kyoto. The cherry blossoms were at their peak; they looked especially splendid under the glow of the lanterns. There were food stalls aplenty and we ate to our heart’s content: grilled fish, fried yam rolls, bamboo on a stick, and barbequed meats. Several restaurants and tables were set up in the middle of the park so you could sit down for a meal and some drinks while partaking in hanami. People were in very good spirits and we ended up chatting to a young couple sat next to us, where we bonded over our shared love for Howl’s Moving Castle and all things Ghibli. I’ll remember this particular night very fondly.
Notes: - It’s possible to visit Nara on route from Osaka to Kyoto or vice versa. That’s what we did and we just stored our luggage at the station in Nara.
- It makes more sense to go to Hiroshima from Osaka - not only is it closer, but our JR West Pass did not include shinkansen travel between Osaka and Kyoto (even if we were riding on the same train going from Osaka to Hiroshima). We only did it this way because our original plans were changed due to my partner’s change in health status.
April 10 - 12: Winding down and enjoying small city life.
Places: Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go
Hotel: Hotel Kanazawa Zoushi
Our second favourite hotel of the trip. We had the warmest reception here, with complimentary tea and dango provided at check-in. The room was very comfortable, while the bathrooms were surprisingly spacious.
Highlights: - Everyone comes here for Kenrokuen and... yeah, it’s an absolutely stunning garden, dressed in wide swathes of pink thanks to the pretty cherry blossoms. Having said that, we noticed other areas of the garden weren’t as lively because the plants had not yet flowered. I think coming here when you know certain flora will be in season will make for a more memorable experience.
- Right next to the gardens are the Kanazawa Castle Ruins, also home to some gorgeous blossom-lined paths. It was way less busy here, as if people didn’t realize they could walk another few minutes to this beautiful location.
- On the surface, Higashi Chaya looked similar to the historic districts in Kyoto. We primarily went there for the Geisha Evenings in Kanazawa performance held at Kaikaro Tea House and it ended up being one of our favourite highlights of the entire trip. Lady Baba is a fabulous host and storyteller; the two hours we spent here flew by, filled with laughter, music, and cultural learnings.
- Omicho Market feels a lot more like a real food market than Nishiki and smells like the sea. We enjoyed some huge oysters here and grilled scallop and octopus skewers.
- We dined at Gen-zae-mon on the recommendation of a local who worked at Kaikaro. It’s a cozy izakaya in downtown Kanazawa serving plenty of scrumptious regional specialties. Try asking the service staff for their recommendations if you’re overwhelmed by the menu options.
- Shirakawa-go was quaint, almost like being transported to a different era. The entire village is easily traversable by foot and it’s worthwhile to visit at least one of the historic houses that have been converted into a museum. If you can climb to the top of the observation deck, you’ll be rewarded with a serene lookout of the entire village. That said, I don’t think spring is the optimal season for Shirakawa-go to shine; I think any other season would colour it better, because it was still grey and barren when we went.
Notes: - I mistakenly thought we could get tickets for the highway express bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go last minute... nope. Thankfully, our JR West pass let us ride the shinkansen at no additional cost to Toyama, where we caught the bus there - and that bus was mostly empty. It only added about 30 minutes more to our travel time.
April 12 - 13: One more outing in Tokyo’s most desirable neighbourhood.
Places: Kichijoji, departure
Hotel: Tokyu REI Kichijoji
Standard hotel with few frills, but great price and location. We chose it because it was a last minute decision to switch from Akihabara to Kichijoji for our last night.
Highlights: - I’m glad we stayed in Kichijoji for the last day of our visit. Walking the streets of this neighbourhood was exactly what we envisioned a peaceful Tokyo to be like and there was much to please the senses. It just felt like the whole package - picturesque, relaxed, easy to get lost in, and bustling to a degree that felt exciting without being overwhelming. The Internet claims that Kichijoji is the most desirable neighbourhood in Tokyo; I definitely believe that now.
- Ghibli Museum was delightful and I’m a big fan of the “no indoor photography” rule. The attention to detail was incredible. Treat yourself to a walk in Inokashira Park before or after your visit. It was late afternoon when we went and the park was filled with young families and students playing after-school sports. It just felt like a pinnacle “slice of life” moment.
- My very fashionable friend (the one who got married) said Kichijoji is her favourite place for consignment shopping and we saw plenty of those stores here. A bit deeper into the residential parts of Kichijoji is an artisanal market and cafe called Sippo: it was filled with one-of-a-kind goods at reasonable prices and everything was made in Japan. I know there are a lot of great shops in Tokyo, but this one stood out to us and we would certainly return on future trips.
- We hopped on an airport shuttle bus from Kichijoji Station to Haneda. No reservations, but the bus was only a quarter full. We gave ourselves three hours at Haneda and still felt like we ran out of time - lots of great shops for last minute gifts (including an Itoya outpost!) Take note that the higher rated restaurants are located outside of the security gates.
Now that some time has passed since departing Japan, the emotions that swept over me in that country have left a deep mark. Like a reminder of what I’m chasing after in this life, Japan excited me, fulfilled me, and left me wanting more. I know that being Japanese in Japan is an entirely different experience, but I still yearn to experience even just a sliver of that life.
Thanks for reading and I hope you got something out of this trip report. If you’re interested in seeing some of the photos I took on this trip, I’ve shared them on my Instagram account, which is the same handle as my Reddit username.

2024.04.28 17:53 mangasdeouf Peri and Beruka should swap royals
Hi,
I've been reading a few old topics about Peri looking for things about her as an unit and as usual most topics about her discard her as an unit either because she joins later than optimal join time and just discuss her as a character and how misplaced she is in the CQ cast and as Xander's retainer.
She could have been placed under Xander by Garon instead of hand picked by Xander, since Garon would try to encourage ruthlessness and cruelty in his heir, just like forcing Hans on the side lines in Cheve.
But my idea is to swap Peri and Beruka. Beruka is an assassin, a silent character, follows orders and respects people. She fits in under Xander's orders. Peri enjoys murdering and hunting people, which clashes with Xander, but Camilla has shown some similar tendencies and is particularly like that towards people who mess with Corrin. Peri could very well have been hand picked by Camilla like Hans was by Garon because Camilla would see value in someone who doesn't shy away from hunting people down and killing them and they are both violent.
Stats-wise, Peri is closer to Camilla than to Xander: strength, speed and res are her best stats, while Beruka runs with strength (good base mediocre growth good skills), skill and def, closer to Xander than Camilla. Xander could very well send Beruka to protect Corrin, meanwhile sending Peri to protect someone is like sending a mass murdering lunatic as a bodyguard.
Usefulness and availability-wise, it makes Peri appear before you have a full party, puts her in competition with Silas earlier, when her speed is still leagues better than his, gives her a fast support with Selena to get the mercenary line with 1 less support and to pass dark knight in exchange (if only for heartseeker that counterbalances their accuracy issues). Peri gains 2-3 levels before her normal recruitment if used and thus reaches 14-15 speed by level 13 (at which point she's faster than Laslow and as fast as base Selena) and she can enjoy any promotion/reclass path and her early promotion can dominate the midgame.
Beruka gets pushed to chapter 12, is boosted to Laslow's base level of 13, has 10 base speed but 15+2 base strength and 16 base def as well as 25-26 base HP, 17-18 base skill, has lunge at base allowing plays in her recruitment chapter and maybe even pot-lunging (which if it doesn't work definitely should). Insta promoting her would boost her to 12 speed, 19-20 str, 20-ish skill, 18-19 def and near-30 HP. At that point, apart from speed and res, Beruka would be on par with Camilla. So Camilla only outshines her offensively when she needs to double and defensively against mages, Beruka can quickly outclass Camilla in physical bulk an their attack is virtually the same, with Beruka able to wield less accurate weapons with more accuracy.
Beruka could rush rally def to alternate between front line fighter and rallybot that can take a hit. She would not be severely outclassed forever by generic wyvern lords capturable in Sophie's paralogue. Laslow's quick support would give her the same boon as Selena's but she could trade some of Soleil's str for some def. Starting at 12 speed, mercenary Laslow boosts her to 15 (or 14?) and a tonic to 16-17, at which point her offense is good enough to deal with all the mooks by OHKOing or doubling and when she doesn't double she might as well swing a steel axe +2 with 14 Mt to push her attack into the mid 30s.
Rally def Laslow would give +5 def, the equivalent of Ragnell/Alondite in the Tellius games and 1 point away from Xander's sword+personal skill to everyone in range. Soleil could get rally speed from marriage/friendship and share rally def for double rally spd/def with Selena's child, massively boosting your party for lategame (rally skill too from bow knight and Beruka can pass down rally strength, effectively making a super rallybot for mid-lategame). That part doesn't change a lot from the swap, but it's encouraged by not having previous support partners and Beruka gains what she needs from Laslow while he gains most of what he needs from her, be it from beruserka or from wyvern lord Beruka.
TL;DR: story-wise Beruka and Xander would get along better than Peri and Xander while Camilla would get along with Peri way better than Xander should. Availability-wise, Peri gets a boost, comes before your party is complete and offers the speedy strong cavalier to Silas' bulky slow cavalier. She gets to use an early second seal if you want dark knight Peri to get heartseeker and later reclass her to GK or paladin. Beruka doesn't get recruited in the same chapter as Camilla, can get a level boost to 13 like Laslow without being OP for her jointime and an instant promoted Beruka with her level 13 averages would be able to make up for availability by having nearly the same stats as Camilla except speed, magic and res, and having better physical bulk in the long run. Early rally def/str at worst is still a good option and doesn't require unpromoted combat at all.

2024.04.28 14:54 Kineticspartan Is Vault tec best for the wasteland?
Pretty sure I might get crucified for this for one reason or another, but hear me out.
In the series, we find out that Vault tec's plan is to wipe out all the factions to restore order.
Now we know Vault tec (along with the other figure heads at THAT meeting) are the pinnacle of evil that even the Enclave couldn't quite hit, they came close, but there's something about some of the experiments Vault tec set up in their vaults (even if they were the brain child of the likes of Big MT or Mr House and even the Enclave themselves, Vault tec made it happen in their vaults, and they're speculated to have had a major role in the bombs falling). That's established, no questions there for me.
But let's look at the state of the wasteland over the 200+ years since the bombs fell, and the major players that have attempted to lobby for change.
-The brotherhood of steel:
We'll start with the guys that just don't seem to be able to be put down. From what I recall, they lost in the west (after they helped the NCR and the chosen one take down the Enclave and the vault dweller take down the master, memory is fuzzy on that sequence of events), but weren't entirely beaten by the NCR, they weren't taking New Vegas seriously when they sent that chapter in, but they weren't entirely beaten by the NCR there either, they went into hiding and to rebuild. They won in the capital wasteland against the Enclave and then again 10 years later against the institute in the Commonwealth.
With how many changes in leadership they have had, and so many different directions they've been pulled in, only Arthur Maxson seems to know how to get shit done, the problem here is that they must've beaten the supermutants in DC finally, and that allowed them the confidence to send a significant force to Boston and investigate the institute there. That could leave DC open to change again while Maxson and his force are gone (depending on what is decided as canon in terms of the lone wanderer), they weakened themselves in one area in order to take another. The NCR are also guilty of this.
-The NCR:
Arguably the biggest success until the fall of Shady sands and the likely abandonment of the Mojave given how they struggled to hold it in the first place, without the intervention of the courier. They beat the BoS in the west, they beat the Enclave there too, it's likely canon that they also beat Legion in the Mojave (with the help of the courier and I'm going to assume that House still held the strip after all that, so with his help too) but lost the divide, they knew how to get shit done. They just tried to expand too quickly.
Their downfall came at the hands of a scorned Vault tec employee, who had a heavy involvement in the destruction of Shady sands. Now obviously they're not gone completely, but they got beaten by the brotherhood to all but end their presence in New California. Given the state we saw the strip in during the end of the series, it's likely they're not active in the Mojave anymore either, so where are they?
They burned too bright and couldn't hold it all.
-The Enclave:
One of the biggest set of bastards of the lot that we could see until we were given more lore on Vault tec. A severe threat to everyone as their plan was to wipe out everyone top side, so they could start again, not just factions, fucking everyone.
This could've been divised with Vault tec and the other figure heads, but regardless, they nearly succeeded. Were it not for the chosen one and the teaming up of the NCR and BoS, they likely would have. They were then beaten again in DC after once more posing a significant threat to the people of the capital wasteland. But for the BoS and lone wanderer (and I'm still going with the gatling laser toting, green hunk of intelligent craziness who waged war on them and almost singlehandedly beat through their forward defences at Black rock).
They're largely gone at this point, with only remnants remaining, but silently they rebuilt. The NCR have taken hard losses, the BoS still knows they exist and are building up again (presumably from what we see in the show), but what do they plan to do this time?
-The institute:
They lost to the BoS, or the railroad, or the minutemen depending on your game, or they wiped out all factions and won. Canonically, I'd say the win would probably go to the BoS, with the railroad dead and buried in Boston, and the minutemen are still building. Whether or not they'll try and take on the BoS remains to be seen, but I don't see them winning unless they get the entire commonwealth on their side.
But they were looking to wipe out wastelanders and replace them with synths eventually. It's the same goal as the Enclave just achieved in a different way. Their own arrogance is their downfall, and all that technology is now lost.
-The master:
Could've succeeded but for the Vault Dweller and the BoS (assuming that's the canon). Attempting to turn everyone into a super mutant but didn't realise that his plan was flawed due to the side effects of FEV.
Either destroyed himself, or was killed by the vault dweller. But still did some damage to the wasteland while he was active. However, his presence is still felt through the surviving mutants who dispersed across the country after his death.
Proprietor of the would be slave nation had he gotten his way (did in some playthroughs), also probably the biggest bastards in the wastes. Destructive in Caesar's planning, but overall, saw large amounts of success in the tribes he assimilated and the pressure he put on the NCR, losing at the dam twice (again, assumed canon) and only losing the second time because of the courier's heavy influence on the outcome.
They didn't want to commit mass genocide in order to rebuild but they weren't beyond it, they offered a choice of join or die. Something the Enclave never offered (but was possibly considered by Colonel Autumn), but so far as I'm aware, the Enclave never did the slave or rape thing, even if they did conduct inhumane experiments and created deathclaws.
The one thing all these factions have in common, is loss. They all stood to lose nearly everything they'd worked to build, but none of them were ever really eradicated (aside from possibly the institute), they just hid themselves away after big losses and planned to rebuild to try and go again.
The problem with all that, is that they now have grudges against each other, which means scores to likely settle.
We saw how heavily the BoS went in on the NCR in the show and their current philosophy in the west, how the Enclave sat in the shadows for the first season and didn't make any kind of play for anything yet, saw in game that the legion were led by Caesar and would likely fracture without him, but still weren't completely beaten, and how raider gangs still built up and got torn down and built up again (looking at you in particular here, Khans and gunners...) alongside the smaller factions who currently have it all to gain like the minutemen (who had already suffered a catastrophic loss before Nate shows up), the children of atom who could be peaceful in DC for the most part, but fanatical terrorists in Far harbour.
With all that considered, it's no surprise why Vault tec wants factions destroyed. With their technology and resources, they could rebuild significant parts of society in their own image and help the country thrive and possibly even restore civilisation. They're evil, they'd have control and they'd have their agenda regardless.
But would they actually be what's best for the wasteland that is America?
(I'll now prepare myself to be skinned alive).

2024.04.28 14:41 TheChaotikMagik Help with Fused Hope: Goku and Vegeta (Angel) EZA
| Title is self explanatory. I'm having trouble getting past stage 7. I powered through the first 6 stages with double AGL Goku and Vegeta Blue but sadly they aren't enough anymore. I know SupeExtreme AGL units, Artificial Lifeforms, and Legendary Power do well here. I've invested in LR AGL Destructive Scattershot Strike Buu (Super) and he seems to do well but isn't enough on his own. These are all my other Artificial Lifeforms units. Who would you guys recommend investing into? I was thinking potentially LR PHY Grudge Rekindled/Infinite Terror Meta Cooler. Any help would be appreciated. submitted by TheChaotikMagik to DokkanBattleCommunity [link] [comments] |
2024.04.28 14:39 spinstartshere 33 M4M Sydney, Australia - Introvert looking for new friends interested in travel, hikes, nude beaches, and more
Hey all! A few years ago, I met a guy on Reddit who saw one of these posts, and now we're best friends who live together. But it's got me thinking - there must be more awesome people on here who would be great to have as friend, right? So where are they hiding!?
I love to travel and average out at one trip every other month. I've had my beach bumming trips for the year already but still have a couple more sight-seeing trips lined up this year. I'm also very keen to check out Japan again after my first visit last year, and there's still loads of places there I want to check out including the Mt. Fuji area and Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios.
When I'm not globetrotting, you'll find me longing for:
- hikes in search of epic waterfalls and trashy photo ops - I also have a National Parks annual pass, which means unlimited parking in most places
- hangs at the nude beach (don't worry, strictly platonic, though I can bring my camera if you want some photos... and I do like to take photos!)
- some long-overdue cycling adventures
- new photography skills; if you know your way around a mirrorless, let me know!
- sci-fi - I'm waiting for the new seasons of For All Mankind, Severance, and Star Trek: Discovery and Prodigy to be released
- gaming; I love JRPGs in particular and I'm currently playing my way through Chrono Cross while waiting for the next chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake to be released on Steam
FYI: I don't drink or smoke. I'm all about quality connections over big groups, so if you prefer one-on-one or small-crew adventures, we might be a perfect match.
Made it this far? If something here has piqued your interest, shoot me a message! We can chat on WhatsApp or Messenger once we hit it off.

2024.04.28 13:37 junkmailktchn A Pizza-Centric Italian Adventure
Neapolitan. Al taglio. Alla pala. Tonda. Pinsa. We had to try them all.
My wife and I traveled to Italy in the fall of 2023 with the goal of eating as much pizza as possible. We wanted to try the pizzas that have gained international attention and sample styles of pizza that we didn't know existed before planning this trip.
First, our pizza preferences:
We prefer modern NY style pizza. Thin. A crisp undercarriage with an air of lightness. A crust with the flavor of good bread. The toppings should be balanced both in weight and contrast: Salty, acidic, creamy, bright.
A few of our favorite pizzas in the United States include: Fini: shallot/long hot. Razza: summer sweet corn w/ fermented peppers. Pizzeria Bianco: “Rosa”. Stretch Pizza: Ramps three ways. Danny Boy’s Famous Original: Pepperoni. Pizzeria Beddia: Plain pizza with Old Gold. Una Pizza Napoletana: Cosacca.
Second, I love to make pizza:
I bake pizza weekly at home. I have experimented with 72 hour cold ferments, 48 hour low yeast ferments, and sourdough ferments. In the winter I use an electric oven with baking steel. In the summer I rotate between my OG Blackstone, Roccbox, and Ooni Koda 16.
Italian Pizza Adventure
Day 1 - Arrive in Rome. Train, tram, and foot travel to Trastevere.
Dar Poeta (Trastevere, Rome) - Coppa pizza - Their pizza is neither neapolitan nor Roman style, but a blend that is unique to Dar Poeta. A popular American food writer likens the crust to sandpaper, yet I found this pizza to be delicious. Crisp, light, and a very tasty first bite on a cool fall evening in an alleyway in Trastevere. Perhaps hunger is the best sauce, and after a long flight and a nerve-wracking tram ride, the pizza at Dar Poeta was a great start to a busy week of pizza eating.
L’Elementare (Trastevere, Rome) - Roman style Margherita Pizza. Nice balance of cheese to sauce. Flavorful. Wait staff was very helpful.
Pizzeria La Bocaccia (Trastevere, Rome) - Pizza Al Taglio - I tried the ham and cheese and marinara. Both were very good. Light and crisp. Seemed like a local spot. The woman working the counter was no-nonsense and efficient.
Day 2 - Breakfast in Rome exploring on foot. Train to Naples for lunch.
Antico Forno Roscioli (Campo Di Fiori, Rome) - Pizza Bianca - Simplicity well executed is divine. Olive oil and salt on a thinner than focaccia-esque square. Pizza Alla Pala. This is delicious. Get there for breakfast. We were there around 8am on a Monday morning and were the only people in the place. We tried to snag a second taste on our last day in Italy on a Sunday afternoon, and the line snaked down the alleyway.
Forno Campo Di Fiori (Campo Di Fiori, Rome) - Pizza Rossa, Mortadella sandwich - Again, get there early. Both of these were amazing. A complete breakfast. You do not need anything else. Forget the Maritozzi, or Bomba, or Cornetto. All you need to start your day in Rome is a Pizza Bianca, a Pizza rossa, and a Mortadella Sandwich.
Pinsere (Near Termini, Rome) - Pinsa with ham, pistachios, ricotta. I ordered what they were serving for “breakfast” as we got there shortly after their 10am opening. Pinsa is a style of pizza with rules and guidelines regarding the flour blend. It is light, airy, and “digestible”. Made from wheat, soy, rice, and sometimes spelt flours and sourdough culture. I would stop by Pinsere again if in the neighborhood.
Lunch - Metro and foot travel in Naples
Antica Pizzeria Port Alba - (Naples) Portafoglia - We got the “wallet” pizza at what may be the world's oldest pizzeria. We enjoyed the snack on the street as school kids ordered lunch-time take away suppli and pizza.
Antica Pizzeria Di Mateo - (Naples) Portafoglia - Had a second street pizza experience. This was not quite as good at the pizza at Port Alba. Should have joined the line for the dine-in experience.
Antica Pizzeria De’ Figliole - (Naples) Pizza Fritta - This was my first taste of the balloon shaped pizza fritta or fried pizza. Pizza fritta is the pizza of the people. It has been around for a long time and has many different iterations. Flatter montanara style, or cone shaped. This was more like a fried balloon of dough with melted cheese and meat inside. We didn’t care for this pizza. The filling was lost in the fried dough. The exterior was slightly oily. We got it for take-away and realized immediately that this beast required a knife, fork, and proper plate. (the pizza fritta at Pepe in Grani is a completely different animal).
Stuffed, we made our way to the bus station, rode the bus to the Napoli airport, picked up a rental car, and drove South towards the Amalfi Coast. We arrived at our accommodation, checked-in, and ran down the street to the nearest grocery store (unique name of Mr. O Pagliette) arriving as they were closing the door. They laughed and waved us in. I made a delicious meal of pasta, vegetables, cured meats, and buffalo mozzarella which was eaten under the setting sun from a terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Day 3 - Hiked to Positano then drove Caserta
We hiked the Path of the Gods to Positano and back. The hike is nice. Sunshine. Ocean views. Lots of stairs down to Positano and lots of stairs back up. Positano is ok. If you like people, shops, and luxury items. We went to the beach for about 10 minutes as throngs of tourists disembarked the ferry. Time to hike back! Upon returning to our car in Bomerano after completing the 11-ish mile hike, we were very hungry. The internet claimed Salumeria Manna, which was a short walk north from the parking lot, served sandwiches. We got there just moments before the proprietor closed for lunch. She cut a few slices from a crusty loaf of bread, stuffed it with provolone and cured meats, and locked up the door behind us. We sat on the curb and devoured our sandwiches, leaving a trail of crumbs in our wake. Satisfied, we got in the car and drove north to Caserta.
Dinner
I Masanielli di Francesco Martiucci - (Caserta) 8 course pizza tasting. Ranked #1 in the world in 2022 (Tied with Una Pizza Napoletana in NYC which serves an amazing cosacca pizza). We ordered the tasting menu months in advance and arrived at 7pm to a line of about 20-30 people waiting for the doors to open. Francesco Martiucci is a master of the craft. He invented a “triple-cooked” pizza which is first steamed, then fried, and finally baked in a wood fired oven. The crust on the triple cooked pizza is a perfect balance of crisp to creamy-crumb deliciousness. And the toppings on the tasting menu were as creative. Onions three ways. Dried tomatoes, tomato cream, fresh tomatoes. Beef and lemon. Tuna and pepper puree. Neapolitan pizza with an abundance of black truffles. Don’t be put off by the strip mall-esque location. Or the fact that I Masanielli was never featured on Netflix. We had an amazing evening. I Masanielli is worth a special trip.
Side note - our booking in Caserta was a steal. Private pool. Walled in yard. Attentive host. Affordable price.
Day 4 - Caserta and on to Caiazzo
Lunch
I Masanielli Sasa Martiucci - (Caserta) Friggitella. Apparently the Masanielli’s have Caserta’s pizza scene on lock-down. Sasa is Francesco’s brother. This pizza lacked the deftness that was on display the evening before. It was a good pizza to be sure, but a little bit on the heavy side. The Tiramibou for dessert was a playful and delicious take on Tiramisu. Highly recommend.
On the way to Caiazzo we detoured to Casertavecchia, a former medieval village that is worth exploring.
Dinner
Pepe in Grani- (Caiazzo) 8 course tasting menu. Plenty of superlatives have been written about Franco Pepe and his pizza mecca located in the sleepy hillside town of Caiazzo. We went all-in and enjoyed every last bite of the full tasting menu (actually my wife hit the proverbial wall early and I ate a significant amount of her pizza). Everything was fantastic. The tomato compote on the Scarpetta pizza was the best bite of the trip. If i ever return, I would skip the tasting menu and order ala carte, with the goal of trying every different style of dough they make.
Prior to dining we spent the afternoon wandering around Caiazzo. A town built on a hill. Narrow cobblestone passageways connecting to tiny streets. Old stone buildings. Nothing to do but explore the quiet streets on foot until dinner. Not a tourist in sight. Except for pizza fanatics. My only regret from our stay in Caiazzo was not saving enough stomach space or time to visit Antico Osteria Pizzeria Pepe, the Pizzeria of Franco Pepe’s family.
Highly recommend B&B Casa Aulivo. An 18th century olive mill converted into a B&B. Same views of the valley as you get from the terrace at Pepe in Grani but with the views all to yourself.
Day 5 - Drove back to Naples, returned the rental car, and spent the afternoon walking around Naples eating pizza.
Sfogliato Attanasio-(Naples) Sfogliatella. A thin, multi-layered, crisp-flaky pastry stuffed with a perfectly balanced orange zested ricotta filling. It was the best non-pizza bite of the week. This. Slaps.
L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele - (Naples) - Cosacca. We arrived early, grabbed a ticket, and were seated in the second round after a 20 minute wait. A super touristy spot that lived up to the hype. This pizza is very good.
50 Kalo (Naples) - Cosacca. Very good. One of my favorite Neapolitan pizzas
Pizzeria Da Atillio (Naples) Pizza Pomod’oro- too much cheese. Pizza ended up soupy.
Day 6 - Train to Salerno. Ferry to Amalfi. We walked from Amalfi, over to Atrani, up to Ravello, and down to Minori. Narrow cobbled alleyways. Stone churches. Long ascending and descending staircases. Blue sky, sparkling azure sea, and glistening pebbled beaches. Architecture that inspired Escher. A fun place to explore on foot. A better walk than the Path of the Gods.
Lunch
Midnight Sun (Minori) - marinara with anchovies. Our least favorite pizza of the trip. Cornicone was dry and overbaked. We only stopped here because it was near the ferry and the other pizza shop in Minori was closed for the week.
Dinner
Pizzeria La Smorfia (Salerno) cosacca - Very good. Surprisingly good.
Anima e Cornicone (Salerno) cosacca - Crust was good. Unfortunately, they subbed black pepper in place of a hard grated cheese and the pepper overpowered the tomato sauce.
Day 7 - Train back to Rome
Casa Manco (Testaccio) - a variety of Al Taglio slices. Concord grape slice was great.
Da Teo Testaccio- Porchetta sandwich. Obviously not pizza but worth every bite!
Trappizino (Testaccio)- Beef cheek ragu. A pizza-like, modern street food invention.
Mastro Donato Pizza Gourmet (Testaccio) - a variety of Al Taglio slices. All very good.
Piccolo Buco (Trevi) Roasted cherry tomato- recommended by Katie Parla as one of the better Neapolitan pizzas in Rome. Was one of our least favorite pizza’s on the trip. Excessive doming and unbalanced topping ratio all contributed to a subpar pizza.
Emma (Regola)- Roman style Prosciutto pizza. Also ordered a focaccia with ham and buffalo mozzarella and were surprised at their interpretation of focaccia. Apparently a focaccia at a roman style pizzeria is a roman style pizza without sauce. We also ordered our only restaurant prepared pasta dish of the trip: cacio e pepe.
Alice Pizza (Pantheon) Al taglio - Solid . Wouldn’t go out of my way for it, but decent al taglio.
Day 8
Bonci (Cipro) - Al Taglio- A perfect way to cap off a week travelling Italy eating pizza. Sunday morning Bonci’ opens with small line and tasty slices. Light. Airy. Crisp. We also snagged a ham and cheese sandwich which was nothing like an American ham and cheese sandwich. Thin, crispy, melty. Divine.
8 Days. 24 Pizzerias. A few key takeaways:
- When it comes to neapolitan pizza we prefer the simplicity of the Cosacca.
- Neapolitan pizza in Naples is a amazing value. Pizza in general in Italy is a value.
- The average pizzeria in the Naples/Salerno area makes a more flavorful dough/crust than the average pizzeria in NYC. .
- Looking back, I could have eaten more pizza in Naples on Day 5 but it was a beautiful day to walk along Chiaia waterfront and take in the sunshine and views of Mt. Vesuvius.
- The last day of the trip was a Sunday. We tried to get to a few more spots after enjoying Bonci’s pizza but the lines were either excessively long or the places we tried to go to were closed. With a plane to catch, we had to be satisfied.

2024.04.28 13:13 DannyJLloyd Warno Future Divisions Speculation List
Repost because the last one got filtered by reddit for some reason.
I had a comment that listed a bunch of potential divisions that could be added to Warno in future. As the list grew, reddit glitched and wouldn't let me save it. So here's a self post instead, and it allows me to better track the ideas anyway.
This will be a live document
Intention is to have a list of unique division ideas that will bring their own playstyles to each faction or nation. This is not a list of all the divisions in Europe, that eould be far longer with a lot of copycat divisions.
(🟥 = USSR 🇸🇮 = Yugo (Slovenian flag, but, you know))
Quick note: SD2 never went more than 4v4 for its DLC's, so 5v5 may be unlikely. But I've just done what feels good.
NORTHAG (5v5) - 🇬🇧🇩🇪🇧🇪 MNAD 🪂
- A multinational coalition airborne division made up of UK's 5th Airborne Brigade, bringing Paras, Supacats, and Gurkhas fighting alongside German Falshirmjager with Kraka and Wiesels, backed up by Belgian para-commandos.
- 🇬🇧 4 Armoured Division
- A fully Chieftain armed division supported by some new FV432 variants, Mot Rifles in Saxons, and Terriers with Buccaneer aircraft.
- 🇳🇱 1e Division
- Leopard 1NL equipped mechanized division, with plenty of YPR-765 IFV's
- 🇳🇱 4e Division
- Netherlands' heavier division, armed with Leopard 2A4's.
- 🇧🇪 16th Mechanised Division
- Leopard 1(BE) and AIFV's
- 🇵🇱 20th Armoured Division
- T-72's and BMP-2's
- 🇵🇱 4th Mechanized Division
- T-55's with BMP-1/SKOT-2's
- 🇵🇱 6th Pomeranian Airborne Division 🪂
- a light but elite airborne division with nice helicopter support from Sokols
- 🟥 25ya Armoured Division
- a T-64/BMP-2 armoured division with new T-64 variants including T-64A, T-64B1 and T-64BV1
- 🇩🇪 9 Panzerdivision
- East Germany's own fully T-72 division with limited quantities of BMP-2
SOUTHAG (5v5) - 🇫🇷 6e Armoured Division
- AMX-10's up to the gills, and Legionnaires
- 🇫🇷 Division of the Rhine
- French reservist division with some interesting old equipment
- 🇨🇦 1 Canadian Division
- Leopard C1's backed up by light motorised infantry with some airborne commandos
- 🇩🇪 1. Gebirgsjägerdivision 🗻
- A mountain-mechanized division with a mix of special forces, Leo 2A1's, and Heimats in Marders
- 🇪🇸 1st 'Brunete' Armoured Division
- *AMX-30E's, M41 scout tanks, BMR-PP APC's, M113's, VEC 25mm/H90 90mm (alternatively, part of this division will be an attachment to the French Rhine division, as that is a very light division and this Spanish division was to support the Rhine area. This would make it a 4v4 DLC, likely sacrificing one Soviet division).
- 🟥 15th Guards Tank Division
- The first Soviet T-72 armoured division, with infantry mounted in BMP-1's
- 🟥 18th Guards Motor Rifle Division
- T-72 mechanized division with plentiful infantry in BMP-2's
- 🇨🇿 1st Tank Division
- Cz's main tank division, with T-72's, BVP-1/2's, and strong artillery
- 🇨🇿 2nd Motor Rifle Division
- Classic Pact motor rifle division with T-55, OT-64 wheeled transports, and possible some elite heliborne attachment
- 🇨🇿 16th Tank Division (reserve)
- Reservist division made from hidden upgraded T-55AM's and BVP-1's, but all staffed by mobilised infantry.
BALTAP (4v4) - 🇩🇰 Jutland Division
- Denmark's main fighting force, consisting of Leopard 1DK's, upgraded Centurion Mk5's and M113's
- 🇩🇰/🇬🇧 Jutland Battlegroup/1st Infantry Brigade
- The UK Mobile Force's Chieftains and Rifles in Saxons provide a Brigade's worth of support to the Jutland Battlegroup, with old Centurion Mk5's with 20-pounders, and M41DK light tanks
- 🇩🇪 6th PzGren
- A light mechanized but huge division (largest in NATO when mobilised) with a significant amount of Heimatschutzen, Marder infantry, and Leopard 1A2's
- 🇺🇸 9th Motorised Division
- *US's light technodivision, with interesting ATGM, Cobras, and other prototypes such as confiscated Stingray light tanks, supported by a NG roundout brigade with M60A3's and NG infantry M113's. I'd also like to see it get the M812A1 Roland, as there's nowhere else it could thematically show up. *
- 🟥 336th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade ⚓
- Soviet marine battlegroup with elite infantry, special T-55's with APS, and some Ka-29 attack helicopters.
- 🟥 94th Guards Motor Rifle Division
- Equipped with mostly T-64A and BTR-60's, it will be a nice medium power motor rifle division.
- 🟥 7th Guards Airborne Division 🪂
- (probably not, it's the same as 35ya)
- 🇵🇱/🇩🇪 7th Landing Division/29th Armoured Regiment ⚓
- Polish marines, with large squads transported in TOPAS-2's and other special forces and T-55's, backed up by the East German Panzermatrosen. (8 MSD, where 29-MSR came from, would be very similar to 4MSD and therefore isn't worth adding as it's own division).
AFNORTH (4v4) - 🇬🇧🇳🇱 UK/NL LF ⚓
- Royal Marines are backed up by some Dutch marines to form a light but very elite infantry battlegroup.
- 🇬🇧🇮🇹🇨🇦🇱🇺 AMF(L)
- A coalition of British, Italian, Canadian, and Luxembourgish forces form a rapid reaction battlegroup. However, it is very light, and will probably be attached to some Norweigian division.
- 🇺🇸 2d Marine Division ⚓
- The primary marine force intended for Europe, it is a highly mechanized marine division with M60A1 RISE, AAVP-7A1's, LAV-25's, and SuperCobras
- 🇳🇴 6th Division
- Leopard 1's, M48's, and M24's
- 🟥 61st Naval Infantry Brigade ⚓
- A Soviet marine brigade with more impressive technology than the 336th, with BTR-80's, better T-55's, and significantly more Ka-29's and Yak-38's.
- 🟥 131st Motor Rifle Division (borrowed from Eukie)
- T-80/PT-76 equipped, with MT-LB borne Motostrelki
- 🇫🇮 Finland Division 1
- 🇫🇮 Finland Division 2
Sweden (3v?) - 🇸🇪 13. Arméfördelningen
- Territorial defence division with STRV 102's (Centurion MkV's) and reservists
- 🇸🇪 13. Arméfördelningen
- The armoured division, with the funky STRV 103's and PBV 302 IFV's
- 🇸🇪 15. Arméfördelningen 🗻
- The mountain division, with elite mountaineers and the Bkan 1A SPG
- 🟥 1st Polar Manoeuvre Group (borrowed from Eukie)
- A light Motostreli/BMD-mounted Desantniki battlegroup with T-55 and a lot of AT options
- 🟥 116th Motor Rifle Division (borrowed from Eukie)
- A second rate motostrelki division with T-55 and PT-76
LANDSOUTH (5v5) - 🇮🇹 'Ariete' Battlegroup
- Italy's armoured division, though only equipped with M60A1's and Leopard 1A2's. March to war may allow for modern Ariete MBT's and Centauro B1 cavalry tanks
- 🇮🇹 Forza di Intervento Rapido Territoriale
- A rapid reaction force made of Italian paratroopers, marines and motorised infantry. March to war may allow for A-129 Mangusta helicopters
- 🇮🇹 Territoriale Comando VII
- One of Italy's territorial defence commands, it is made up of many reservists backed up by unique Carabineri para-military police equipment, and significant old but heavy artillery such as the Long Tom and a single M270 MLRS.
- 🇵🇹 1a Brigada Mista Autonoma
- The Portuguese Independent Mixed Brigade, backed up by the Corpo de Tropas Para Quedistas Parachute Brigade, could form a Portuguese Battlegroup. M48A5, M47, M113, M24, AML-60, AML-90, etc.
- 🇪🇸 2nd 'Guzman el Bueno' Motorised Division
- M47/M48's, M41's, BMR's (Milan, APC, 81mm mortar), truck-borne infantry, VEC 25mm/H90 90mm
- 🇸🇮 Yugoslavia division 1
- 🇸🇮 Yugoslavia division 2
- 🇸🇮 Yugoslavia division 3
- 🇷🇴 4th ‘Tudor Vladimiescu’ Tank Division
- T-72, BMP-1, SU-100
- 🇷🇴 1st Motor Rifle Division
- TR-85, BTR-70, SU-100
Alpine DLC (4v?) - 🇦🇹 Austrian Panzergrenadierdivision
- M60A3, M60A1, 4K4FA IFV's, Kurassiers
- 🇨🇭 Mechanized Division 1
- fill out later
- 🇪🇸 4th 'Urgell' Mountain Division + Spanish Para Brigade
- 4th Mountain Division may not have enough equipment to form its own battlegroup. Hence I've attached the Spanish paras for some help.
- 🇩🇪🇦🇹🇮🇹🇨🇭 German/Austrian/Italian/Swiss Alpine division 🗻
- 🇷🇴🇨🇿 Mountain & Para & Czech MRD Battlegroup 🗻
- Romanian mountaineers were the elite of their military, but are too small to form their own battlegroup. Warsaw Pact can come together to form a battlegroup here.
- 🇵🇱 5 Podhalańska Brygada 🗻
- While for home defence, it was Poland's most elite home defence force and fits the Alpine/mountain theme of this DLC so feels like a good place to include them.
- 🟥 68th Separate Motor-Rifle Brigade 🗻
- The Soviet's only specialised mountain Brigade. Normally bordering China but uchrony moved to Europe. Features Gornostrelki (mountain infantry) in BMP-1 and GAZ-66 with Nona. Would need to be paired up with something else.
- 🟥 5th Independent Guards Army Corps
- Combined 120th Guards Motor Rifle Division (T-72's, BMP-2), plus the 5IGA's Air Assault Regiment (BMD's) for a powerful OMG breakthrough division, also equipped with Uragan's and Smerch's. (Not sure if this fits here, but I'm adding it here for now to help fill this DLC out on the Pact side.)
LANDSOUTHEAST (4v4) - 🇹🇷 3rd Mechanized Division
- Turkey's prime division, with M48A5's
- 🇹🇷 4th Infantry Division
- A mainline infantry division with M48A2's
- 🇬🇷 20th Armoured Division
- Armed with AMX-30, Leopard 1A3, AMX-10P, Leonidas APC
- 🇬🇷 2nd Mechanized Division
- M48/M47, M113's
- 🇪🇸 5th 'Navarra' Mountain Division + Marine Brigade*
- 5th Mountain Division was expected to support in Greece/Turkey, and could maybe see support from the Marines for extra strength?
- 🇧🇬 11th Tank Division
- T-72 & BMP-1
- 🇧🇬 XXth Motor Rifle Division + 37th Independent Air Assault Battalion
- T-55A, D-994 PSzH-IV APC, Paras in BMD-1
- 🟥 108th Motorised Rifle Division
- Veterans of Afghanistan and structured uniquely with 4 Motor Rifle Regiments and no tank regiments. It was equipped with T-62, a mix of BTR-80 and BMP-2D. T-62's and BTR's underwent numerous battlefield modifications including strapping rocket launchers and RPO's to them. The division also had an experimental artillery structure to combat the thick Afghan walls, with Akatsiya, D-30, BM-21, 2A36 Giatsint-B, and 2S4 Tyulpan heavy 240mm mortars.
- 🟥 103rd Guards Airborne Division
- Another Afghan division, this time staffed with VDV, though not really airborne but more mechanized. One of the last divisions sporting the ASU-85 (which is sadly lost in 1985), it is equipped with T-55AM's and BMP-2D's for a unique mix, especially alongside the shock-trait but non-airborne VDV.
"US nation pack" DLC for battlegroups that don't easily fit elsewhere:
- 🇺🇸 101st Airborne
- entirely heliborne, quite different. Like a UK 2nd Infantry Division but better helis
- 🇺🇸 42nd Infantry Division
- National Guard, M60A1/M60A3, maybe even M60A2 Starship, Duster AA
- 🇺🇸 3rd Infantry Division
- Though fitting neatly into SOUTHAG geographically, it isn't interesting enough to be part of that DLC. It would be a hybrid of 3rd Armoured and 8th Infantry. Imagine 8th Infantry AP slots, but 3rd Armoured equipment. Armed heavily with Bradley's, M1A1's, and Cobras, it would be a formiddable division, and possibly a good place for the Bradley BRAT with ERA to show up.
- 🇺🇸 US 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized)
- an M60A3 based REFORGER division

2024.04.28 08:43 coolestant MUST DO hikes in the San Gabriel mountains? (easiest to hardest)
Starting to get into hiking again and would love to explore the San Gabriel mountains, what are the hikes that I absolutely MUST DO while I’m here? A list going in order from easiest to hardest would help a lot, for those of you who have been hiking the mountains for a long time. Not looking for anything super treacherous or sketchy. The goal is to do the Mt. Baldy hike some day.

2024.04.28 06:00 surfaholic15 SATURDAY At our Home LCS and Random Shit
HELENA MT, 50s, rainy, and MY SILVER!
https://imgur.com/a/JF1EGgq We got home late last nite. We were going to hit up a LCS in billings yesterday but we got distracted touristing and got to billings after everything closed.
A dude was in our LCS trading generic gold and placer gold for sovereign gold. He had some pretty nuggets, and got a maple for 100 over spot. Rounds were just under 3.00 over spot, 40 percent Kennedys still 7x fv and 90 percent at spot basically.
The round collection was thin. They had an APE SLAB cut from a COMEX BAR. Premium on the fancy stuff starts at 7 over spot for art silver and related. Sovereign premiums starting at 6 over. Cull Morgan and Peace are still 30.00.
Lots of gold has been moving and folks trading silver for gold.
So, I got a very slightly damaged assay round for me, got that Uncle Sam that I need to research and the William Tell. I am happy.
THEY GOT A BUNCH OF MINE ROUNDS. Pegasus mint. They will be sold as a set, but they also have a few individual. I am already eyeballing a Hecla and a Montana tunnels for my collection lol. They will be pricey at 50.00 each. Oh well.
First priority though is stocking up on aztecs, buffaloes and pacific northwest for trading if we go on a road trip and to replace the weight I lost (though I actually did NOT lose much weight at all trading, so there is that...). On the 7th I will be shopping in Missoula, I might get lucky there on some things too.
In other random news, regular gas 3.39, diesel 3.59. That is a crazy small spread right there. Not good. A case of large eggs is 12.03 this week. Would you believe cheap mill is north of 4.00 a gallon at walmart? All the dairy (what there was) had gone up. Except cheese. Yogurt, cottage cheese, cream, butter, sour cream, ice cream...
The clearance prices at my walmart for clothing are rivaling yard sales now. Go figure. Saw all kinds of clothing 2.00 to 5.00. Slacks, shirts, PJs, skirts, dresses... jackets and coats starting at 9.00.
The family dollar that opened last year 100 yards from dollar tree closed. They apparently clearanced the whole place at 75 to 90 percent off the last few days. Dollar tree is still way understaffed, they are having issues being open. Harbor Freight was also randomly closed today due to lack of staff. Sheesh. Every fast food place in town is now offering over 16 to start. Yikes.
Our walmart was crowded today, and a zillion gadgets are marked down for mother's day. Most were being ignored.
I will say it was a great road trip. I did find it interesting that those US Assay Office products are well known and well regarded but NOT widely available. I saw none anywhere. A knowledgeable collector and seller in the gun shop in rapid city theorized the bars (and larger bars in particular) were not only lower mintage but stacked by folks using them as a metal retirement fund as they looked official so to speak. He had actually seen one of the 100 ounce ones. And had 10 ounce ones in his private stack.
I was also surprised at dealers being willing to haggle to get my aztecs, pacific northwest and my Asahi. They also preferred the cameo type or high relief buffaloes/other unusual buffaloes over standard. So I will be building the stack with the more unusual generics plus some assay office rounds and other vintage rounds that are common where I am. Plus typical buffaloes.
I was also quite pleased that I got spot or better trade value on everything and was able to haggle to get prices rounded down in a few cases lol.
End observation there, don't hesitate to explore trading your common stuff you get cheap for better things!

2024.04.28 05:59 False_Mine_246 Got invested into a light novel for the first time, need more recommendations
I've been trying to get into reading light novels for a while but couldn't because of either pacing, prose, plot, and other factors. A lot of the time, I found that I was forcing myself to read it and hope that eventually I would like it, but that had never happened for any novel I've tried until a few days ago.
I came across Torture Princess a few days ago, and I was super surprised to find that I finished the first volume in one sitting. It was the first light novel that I actually liked (I avoid anything that has a good anime adaptation since I don't want to spoil myself so I haven't read MT, Slime, etc, but I would expect them to also be good).
I'm going to savor this instead of binging all volumes, so I'm just looking for any other light novels that I may like according to my preferences. The pacing and prose in this just felt perfect for me and the plot was also interesting enough (I wouldn't say I'm a fan of gore, but I don't mind it).
I've tried AOB, Tearmoon Empire, Seventh (and a bunch of other ones from NovelUpdates) but just couldn't get into them due to a variety of factors. Any recommendations are appreciated! Also, the next light novel I'm going to try when I have time is TRPG, I've heard good things about it.
