2024.05.14 10:03 Such_Disappointment8 Why do i feel so angry at myself

Context: I recently got a 60 in my math text and I've been feeling really angry, mad just I don't feel like myself. I had another math exam and I was sure I was going to ace it, I studied alot alot by alot I mean everyday till the exams every little thing, I studied all of the textbook material, did quizzes online about the material I did worksheet everything I could find online. But when I got my results (i got an 89) i just felt the same way I felt before I don't know why, my parents don't force me or get mad if I get a low grade they just tell me to improve and forget about it. I feel like maybe just to end it all I've never felt this, I just can't i don't know why

2024.05.13 05:38 user101604371 if you're considering Science One...

Disclaimer: This post is merely to provide knowledge, and not to instruct you to do anything. Your choice whether to choose the Science One program at UBC or not is completely up to you. I hope this helps in making an informed decision.
I just thought I would contribute to the existing public knowledge of the Science One program already on Reddit here: https://www.reddit.com/UBC/comments/ec95t4/for_anyone_interested_in_science_one/ My post assumes you already did basic research on the program and aims to contribute more knowledge that isn’t publicly available yet (here is the Science One website: https://scienceone.ubc.ca)
I am an alumni in the 2023-2024 cohort, but just a disclaimer that a few things will change in the program in the years to come (see below):
Just a few small updates to the previous Reddit post:
Note about grades: While Science One is promoted as a program where the students care more about knowledge than grades, while this is very true in my personal experience, I still think that grades played a large impact on our mental health, confidence, and our overall enjoyability of the first year experience. The reason I am including grades here is to allow you to have reasonable expectations about your grades and know that if you want to go into a very competitive specialization in second year, Science One may not be the right program for you. Note that the grades published on UBC grades (https://ubcgrades.com) is not representative of the actual class average. There is a policy where if a student failed two or more subjects in Science One, the credit for Science One will be broken down into its individual course components and the student will not appear to have been in Science One (it doesn’t show Science One on their transcript, rather the rough course equivalents). This raises the apparent class average reported. In my year, 3 people were removed, which changed the class average from 75% to 77%.
Alright, with that out of the way, I will be filling in the gaps of public knowledge specifically with the workload of Science One. Below is a (hopefully) unbiased perspective on Science One. My personal opinion will be stated later in this post.
Biology
Note: both of our biology professors (Pam Kalas and George Haughn) are no longer teaching in the program, so this subject may look very different

Overall: 2-5 hours of work per week depending if there’s quizzes or assignments that week
Class average over the year: 75%
Term 1 Units: Chemical Bonding and Basics, Conformations, Stereochemistry, Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry

Term 2 Units: Waves, Quantum Mechanics, Electrostatics, Circuits, Magnetism and Magnetic Fields, Stellar Nucleosynthesis
Physics Tutorials
Physics Labs (Phys 119, Phys 129)
Class average (I forgot): around 85%
Mathematics
Overall workload: around 3-6 hours per week depending if there’s assignments, and midterms that week
Class average over the year: 72%
Term 1 Focus: Derivatives and ODE’s
Term 2 Focus: Integration
Term 1 Project (partnered)
Overall workload: around 1 hour per week, but can be up to 4 hours when preparing for the presentation
Class average: around 85%
Term 2 Project (partnered)
Overall workload: anywhere from 0-8 hours a week depending on the complexity of the project
Class average: 75%
Summary
With that in mind, I want to provide some pros and cons of Science One:
Pros
Cons
Personal Opinion
While I did enjoy Science One at the start of the school year because of the pros mentioned above, over the school year, I started taking an interest in a competitive major, which put a lot of stress on myself to achieve high marks. It almost felt like no matter how hard I tried and how well I thought I knew the topic, my mark was going to be low anyways because the way the content is tested. I feel like I shot myself in the foot when it comes to getting into my major as the application process is completely based on grades.
While I don’t know if I would have done better in mainstream (I probably wouldn’t have had as many friends, and therefore my mental health would be worse, and possibly it means that I don’t have as much motivation), I definitely think that I could have done better in mainstream if I had the same motivation I do now as their way of testing and marking may be a lot more lenient. However, I am almost certainly sure that if my cohort were placed into mainstream classes in first year, we would have achieved much higher grades than we did in Science One. However, I don’t know if being in Science One could have an effect on my performance in the years to come. I do acknowledge that over the year, I was able to develop really good study habits to manage the workload and also learned to prioritize my health, which will be beneficial in the future.
However, I have also noticed that there are some “hell weeks”, where we absolutely feel like dropping out. In both terms, after term 1 and 2 conferences, where we were away at camp for the weekend (we didn’t have the weekend to do schoolwork), there was a week where there were many overlapping assessments, such as math midterms, chemistry quizzes, math assignments, and chemistry assignments, etc. These are the assessments that ended up having class averages which were below expectations, which I feel wasn’t our fault at all.
In fact, we were burnt out, but because of our wonderful Student Council, we were able to have some assignments pushed back to alleviate some of our workload and reduce burnout. Special thanks to our chemistry professors, as they were always open to planning the chemistry quizzes on days that weren’t as bad for us, and even asked us which day we wanted the quizzes. I can tell they really care about our wellbeing and our performance.
In addition, even though Science One is marketed as being prestigious, most of the people I talk to don’t even know what Science One is, and the few who do know it, know it for its intensive nature and harsh marking scheme. There is no special treatment for Science One graduates that I know of except for the occasional “wow how did you survive?”.
Generally, I don’t regret doing Science One, but if I had the chance to restart first year, I would have chosen to go the mainstream route. I feel I would have been a lot less stressed and have gotten much better grades. However, I did meet so many motivated and amazing people this year, and have generally enjoyed some aspects such as camp. Unfortunately, because of my desired major, I have seen Science One as something that may have limited my options in the future.
Do I think Science One is for you?
These are my personal opinions and please don’t take this section as the final decider for you. Be sure to do more research!
To succeed in Science One, talent can only go so far. At some point you will be challenged academically, and you will doubt yourself. But what follow is what really determines if you are a good fit for Science One. If you want to give up and do something easier, go to mainstream. If you want to persevere and to learn more, Science One may be the right choice for you. If just you want the prestige of Science One, don’t do Science One, it is not as well known as their website may make it seem. If you want to go into Computer Science, Science One may not be for you since it has little connection to Computer Science and really lowers your mark.
If you really are hard set on a competitive major which requires high marks, consider mainstream, since it is very rare and very very difficult to do well in Science One. If you really love to learn more difficult concepts, have a tight community to be by your side, to have good connections to your professors, to get some research experience, AND grades aren’t a huge concern for you, Science One is for you.
Again, take my opinion with a grain of salt. You are ultimately the right person who can make the right choice for yourself. You know yourself the best. I hope this helped and I wish you all the very best in your studies, whether you decide to go Science One or not. Feel free to DM me or reply below if you have any further questions :)

2024.05.13 02:30 Ecepro1776 How do I get my online learning platform into libraries database?

Hi there fellow library enthusiasts, I am doing a bit of research here and wondering if anyone may know some answers I am looking for. I am a licensed teacher who left the school district to start a preschool out of my garage. I then went on to launch an online learning platform for 2-6 year olds. This platform has hundreds of on demand classes taught by 16 teachers (and always adding more classes and teachers) in things like reading, math, science, cooking, Spanish, yoga, art, dance, music, and more. It also has printable curriculum and interactive learning games. My library has online classes for grownups using Gale courses, but it doesn’t really have classes for kids. I have been marketing it to homeschool families, but I am thinking about trying to get it into libraries so the community can access it for free. I Won Nevada’s Early childhood educator of the year last year due, in part, to this program. I am a small, women owned business and it’s pretty much just me running things behind the scenes. I have had great success with my local preschool and want this online program to reach as many as it can, because it has been a game changer for all of my online parents. Even ones who don’t homeschool prefer to turn on one of my classes instead of YouTube or whatever else their kids were watching previously.
For anyone who has worked in libraries or has knowledge on this , how do they purchase online learning content? Does each library get its own login? Or would I sell them a certain amount of logins and people would set up their own account? My normal monthly subscription is $20/month when selling to families, but what would the pricing structure be for something like this? This is a very new idea, but I already have the platform built and running, so I’m just looking for more info on how libraries procure online learning content. I appreciate any insights, thank you!

2024.05.13 01:26 IQ_Throwaway4 IQ Subtest Variance Questions with background info

IQ Subtest Variance Questions with background info
I have a 7 year old child who recently took an IQ test and I have questions about the results (pictured). We are going to discuss with the tester (a school psychologist), but I wanted to get some outside opinions as well so that I'm well equipped for the conversation. This is long, so TIA for reading and commenting.
My concern revolves around the fact that the child’s subtest scores were up to 2+ standard deviations apart from one another (see below). I’m not sure if this is “normal” or if some kind of intervention needs to take place.
Some testing and personal background:
-The child started talking in full sentences at 15 months old and reading and writing before kindergarten (with no push from us).
-They are highly sociable and seem to have an above-average social awareness (doesn’t seem to be on the autistic spectrum).
-They seem to have very high executive functioning, even reminding us of day to day scheduling that might otherwise slip through the cracks (doesn’t seem to have ADHD?).
-The child is prone to anxiety and has previously suffered from severe separation anxiety and a coughing tic. The separation anxiety seems to be innate and the coughing tic appeared during the pandemic. Our family has also dealt with a lot of chronic and emergency health issues in the past 5 years (so since the child was 2 years old).
-The test was given on a Friday early afternoon with no forewarning (pretty much worst-case scenario in my mind). And the child’s other parent was out of town for work that whole week (possible separation anxiety again).
-An anecdote about schoolwork: Two weeks ago the child brought home a worksheet with 16 math problems on it. The first 8 were perfect. The next 8 answers were such gibberish that I assumed the child was just messing around and I asked them about it (non-judgmentally, I don’t really care). The child seemed offended by such a statement and claimed to have not realized. The next week the child brought home a bunch of worksheets with about 100 math problems and they were all correct, save two where the child had subtracted instead of added.
-My partner and I, as well as the child's 9 year old sibling are all classified as “moderately gifted” according to testing.
-The child and sibling have a very close relationship and play together all day long. It’s possible that some of the child’s problem-solving skills have been dampened by reliance on the older sibling. Or that any issues with said skills were masked by the older sibling’s help.
So, what should we make of these test scores? What questions or concerns (if anything) should we bring up with the psychologist?

2024.05.12 06:10 CelestialHorizon BPM to Tempo Automation Conversion

Hey All! I thought I would share a resource I have been working on that's been helpful for me. When creating BPM automation in FL Studio, if you want to change the automation on the Playlist, it doesn't take BPM values but rather some seemingly arbitrary Type In Value (TiV).
I'm referring to the Type In Value when you right-click an automation point on the Playlist, not when you right-click on the BPM number at the top. This is important because it takes BPM values when you Type in a Value directly on the BPM. But on the Playlist, it doesn't take BPM values directly. I found this not intuitive, so I did some math and figured out the following. I hope it's helpful to some people.
Below is a quick data summary before I post each BPM to Type In Value conversion.
Here are the exact BPM to Playlist Tempo Automation Type In Values conversions for each BPM from 60 through 180 BPM. Edit - I'm not sure how to copy/paste a worksheet data set into a Reddit comment efficiently, so you'll have to copy from the image or do your own math. This table looked horrid lol
If you made it this far, thank you for reading, and I hope this helps!
Note from a comment by JR - these values only work with the default tempo min/max in FL. If you increase or decrease those, these values will no longer line up.

2024.05.12 05:43 locknload65 Objective markers and their size.

I have been looking for objective markers I can print. Now I am confused. By my math, an objective marker should be 116.2 millimeters in diameter—3 inches 76.2 millimeters plus 40 millimeters for the base. The printed ones I have found are bigger. Am I right? Are there printable objective markers? Not 3D printed.

2024.05.11 17:17 SensitiveBugGirl Why do some teachers not use the curriculum?

Hi, I've been thinking about this question and would like some outside opinions because I feel like I have to be missing something. I also don't want to ask a bunch of coworkers and come off as dissing the teacher.
I'm a teacher aide in two second grade classrooms in a Choice private school. I did go to school to be a teacher. I completed everything except one 10 week student teaching (but I made up the credits and graduated). I've worked at those school for about 3.5 years. 1.5 were spent with K4. This is my second year in 2nd grade.
Backstory: My one teacher is chronically absent. She is being forced to retire after this school year. Her back and legs are causing hee so much pain she can't come to school and work. I've been the only constant presence for these kids these last 6 months. My teacher has only been a full time teacher her for about 7 years. She subbed for a lot of her life. I end up teaching a lot, although it's been awesome having subs on most days as of late. I take care of most of the stuff in the classroom and come in early and stay late to try to make sure everything is as it should be.
She basically doesn't use the school's science or English curriculum. We have a new math curriculum (we used to use Saxon until we couldn't get any more physical books. Now we have Math Expressions), but she doesn't teach it as intended. She doesn't use a lot of the materials that came with it.
For English, our school uses Shirely which is what I grew up with. The student books are still in storage. The student workbook are in their desks, unused. They have only used the sentence books, but she doesn't teach it the Shirely way. These kids will go on to 3rd grade... behind. She thinks they have to master each part of speech before doing sentences. It never occurred to her that we could go through them... as a class. I never even knew where the TE book was until like a week ago. I'm not even convinced she knows how to do it. She uses tons of superteacher worksheets and random ones she finds online. Sometimes the answer key isn't right. Some of the stuff is confusing. Instead of using the Shirely songs and videos, she picks random stuff from on YouTube.
For science, she doesn't use the book. She prints off all these black and white packets that the kids frequently lose. Lots of repetitive questions. Everything is writing stuff out that frankly feels like wastes of time sometimes because by the time everyone has the answers down, a chunk of the kids are now talking, making noises, and distracting each other. Sometimes I don't even know what the question is asking either. Sometimes the answer isn't actually in the text (and it's not an opinion or inference question).
I've talked a little with one of subs (who taught in the upper grades for many years at the school), and she clearly thinks that not using the English curriculm is wrong. On the days she's there, it's like she makes it her mission to teach how they should be taught.
Math is now being taught by the other 2nd grade teacher. We are units behind with only a couple weeks left and won't be able to finish the book. There were too many days spent not doing lessons or using materials not from the curriculum (which they didn't master. They are still very much struggling).
I just don't understand. How do you not know where you NEED to be if at all possible? If you are picking random topics for science, how do you know you are meeting standards? All of this goes against everything I was taught in college. If the kids were thriving, I wouldn't be worried. They aren't though.
And FWIW, the other teacher doesn't use the curriculum for social studies either, and I can't say I understand. That retired teacher sub doesn't even agree with some of the stuff in these worksheets (like money being an example of scarcity).
I very much try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I naturally believe they know better than me, so I hate saying anything. Am I missing something or is/was my teacher just not great at teaching? She feels like the kind of teachers I grew up with in the 90s and early 00s, although my teachers were better I think. I understand supplementing with materials every once in a while... or if the book is missing a lot of stuff. But never using the curriculum and it's worksheets? Or using it only a quarter of the way so that it appears to confuse the kids so it must not work? To be clear, I've never heard them talk about the curriculum being awful or old or anything.
I'll say this because I feel like someone may ask, we don't have anyone in charge of curriculum or looking over lesson plans. They submit their block plans to the drive I think, but I'm pretty sure they aren't looked at.

2024.05.11 14:25 an0nymous_cr0w Is my teacher being creepy or am I just going crazy?

TW: potential creep?
I am currently in an all girls school and am half way through my GCSEs and have been having some problems in my maths class. The teacher, who I'll call Mr. A teaches me maths and has been for the past 2 years and has been showing some... questionable signs.
It started off when he first started teaching my class, where he would make jokes often which were lighthearted. However, I started to get some bad vibes from him when his jokes progressed into putting words in students' mouths, for example saying things like "XYZ said we should do (something) today!" which was nothing entirely bad, but it seriously annoyed everyone, especially when he continuously insisted XYZ had said something after being asked to stop.
This lead me to have some built up hate for Mr A, but I decided to take it out by making jokes which were slightly targeted towards him while having conversations. I get it was a dumb way of expressing that I didn't like him very much, but that's beside the point.
As the year progressed, the class began to warm up to Mr A, and so did he to us. His behaviour began to slowly increase in 'creepiness' but this was when I began to get properly freaked out. It was after school, and I had lost a monologue script that I needed for another subject (drama). As I was walking through the halls, Mr A stopped me and began talking to me. He asked what I was doing, and I replied saying I just needed to get a monologue. Obviously, that sparked his interest and he began to insist that I should stay after school and practise/perform my monologue to him in his class. Throughout the whole interaction, I hadn't said a single thing after telling him what I was doing. He just continuously said how I should meet after school to practise the monologue over and over again. It was extremely awkward for me, but thankfully, I managed to get away.
The next encounter was, again, after school while I was waiting to get picked up. He was walking out, when he saw me, and approached me to talk. He began to converse with me, but it turned into him asking me to meet him after school to practise maths with him. I said that I didn't want to, but he insisted and said he would talk to my parents about it if I didn't want to go. Unfortunately, at that specific moment, my mum turned up to pick me up. I began to run to my mum's car as I didn't want him to talk to her or myself, but he caught up and began talking to my mum. Mr A talked to my mum about how I was a great student and how staying after school for some private maths lessons would benefit me, and began asking my mum about me. During this whole situation, I began to get more and more upset, as I just wanted to leave, but my mum, being oblivious, continued talking to Mr A. Eventually he left, but as he was walking away, my mum asked if he wanted a ride. I immediately started saying 'No, no, no, no' over and over again to my mum but she wouldn't listen. Mr A began to approach again, and until he finally was up right next to me finally got the jist I wasn't comfortable. Luckily, he finally went away but that wasn't the end of it.
He then began asking me to stay in his class for maths lessons during my break and lunch, and wouldn't let me leave class until I accepted to go to his 'private lessons'. I managed to bring a friend though, but overall the atmosphere was very tense and weird. He would also use the same "XYZ said to do this" but "You said you would come to my private lesson on (a specific date)".
The most recent encounter was the one which really set off my concern-
Mr A was late to class so we had a cover teacher. When he came in, he asked who would have preferred to be taught by the cover teacher, to which I (and yes, i know, this was a dumb move) said yes. The class began to laugh, and he pouted but then gave out a worksheet to go through. Once everyone started working, he came and sat opposite me and asked why I said yes. I said 'I was just kidding' and he replied with 'I know.' and after a short moment he whispered under his breath 'I like it.' in an almost suggestive tone. I was honestly shocked and I just don't really know what to do.
I've heard from my classmates and friends that he's also been doing creepy things to them and I have no idea if I'm just paranoid or if he's actually creepy. The school most likely won't listen to me and other male teachers who were paedophiles were only fired after the very last straw. What can I do?

2024.05.11 04:21 careerthrowaway91112 [High School Math] Slope Formula in Standard Form

Hi, I'm hoping to go back to school in the fall with college math classes. So I'm going through algebra again with the help of Professor Leonard (absolutely amazing) and other online resources.
I'm really trying to understand the math/formulas I'm learning, rather than just memorizing the formulas which is what I did a decade ago learning math.
So, in standard form m = -a/b. Rather than just memorize that, I want to understand why which is where I'm struggling.
If I get two points from the standard form equation, and use m = y2 - y1/x2 -x1 I get the same slope as m =-a/b, so I know it has to be true that it -a/b works. The y2 - y1/x2 - x1 version I get. Rise/Run which is based on the difference between the two points' X and Y axis on the line.
So why is it that in standard form -a/b works? It feels like that's saying opposite run/rise? I realize in this form we are using the coefficients of x and y rather than a specific point's x and y values like in the other format so it must have to do with that.
Bonus question if you have time -- I was playing around with a simple equation from a worksheet: 2x + 4y = 5. I found that after getting the slope and a point from that equation, and putting that in point-slope format, and then going back to standard form, I got 1/2x + y = 5/4 as my standard form equation. Which equates to the same line as the original problem. I can then multiply both sides by 4 to make it be the exact same as the original equation. So my question is are both of those equations of the line equally "correct"? They are the exact same line. Couldn't we then have an infinite number of line equations as long as we were doing the same thing to both sides of the equation? The writer of the original equation I'm guessing just got rid of the fractions to make it an easier question?
Thank you very much for any insight you can provide!!

2024.05.09 07:00 Morzho How do you study without material?

Originally, i'm from Ukraine where we don't use computers in school, only outside some schools provide poorly done, yet effective websites to follow homework (circa 2022, maybe it's changing). Still, the tasks themselves like all the information is inside the subject book and your notebook so to understand how to study something you don't need much time, everything is in front of your eyes and is with you all the time. However, it's my third year of school in the UAE (i'm in grade 10, IB next year), where there aren't any physical books and each teacher has to figure out by themselves how to give homework. It's the second school i have changed here and still can't figure out how to study something. For instance, for math lessons, they don't give us copies of the slides in the chapter guide. And that is so confusing. For example, there is a music lesson where half of the group goes to the practice room and half is left in the classroom and told to study for exams, majors or minors, whatever. I have a math minor tomorrow and i don't even get the concept of "studying" yet. In Ukraine, they often gave us practice tasks before exams or "control work" (major), so we both have the original material, tasks to prepare and our full lesson notes. But here, either my conspect is poor and messy or they just haven't given us study materials or i'm just a stupido here because everyone but me understands how to study in this school.
They actually give us theory through "pre-class videos" which you have to take notes of, and, i guess, study them, but i don't sometimes get how to "note correctly" or how to "study" such notes (because in the video bro really does a worksheet and just explains some theory, it's IM3 Ext) so i found this Reddit to ask people.
I wouldn't have thought that this system is such an exotic thing for me not only in this, but in how they write math, how the subjects are organized and a lot more

Question: I am looking for advice on finding the ideal Personal Knowledge Database/Wiki (AKA: 'Second Brain') solution. Note: I primarily use Windows, but Linux is also an option.
Programs I've Tried: Over the past ~10 years, I've searched for the perfect program. I've tested numerous options such as HelpNDoc, Obsidian, Notion, TiddlyWiki, Joplin, ZimWiki, DokuWiki, spreadsheets, Google Drive, CherryTree, TreeSheets, and the Zettelkasten/Bullet Journal Methods. Regrettably, none of these solutions have fully satisfied all my requirements. So far, HelpNDoc is probably the closest to success I've been.
Programs I Haven't Tried Yet:
Does anyone know of a program or methodology/workflow that supports these features:

2024.05.08 22:32 Informal_Block_6212 Whats going to happen to me?

I'm 14 and supposed to be in 8th grade. I think my parents lost custody of me to DCF a few weeks ago at this point? I'm currently living with my grandma, but for the first two weeks of not living with my parents I lived with my grandpa. My parents lost custody of me for obvious reasons. They failed to update my homeschool progress (because they hardly homeschooled me in the first place), they have been VERY non compliant and combative with authorities, and there have been obvious signs of domestic violence and animal neglect going on in their house due to multiple police calls reguarding loud yelling, and escaped farm animals sometimes even directly from one of my siblings. In my current situation, I'll be returning to public school for the remainder of the school year starting tomorrow, but the thing is I haven't actually been to school since second grade. My parents pulled me out at that time because I started complaining about school being too hard and I knew my mom was teacher.
I had significant trouble focusing on anything and had an attention span of literally five seconds before getting lost in my own thoughts. I would miss out on entire classes because of this too, even though it was such an early grade. The past few years I realized this was the cause of me not wanting to go to school, and tried my absolute best to pay attention to everything people were telling me and I tried my best to be more responsible to appease my parents and have a healthier life. It worked, I have few issues paying attention anymore, but everything else was just too hard... After I was pulled from school my parents never got to work on educating me or my brother (My younger brother is in a similar situation, except the difference is he's never recieved any formal education at all. At all.), and I don't even know why they didn't. My life until now largely consisted of me being left alone to the internet and playing video games, but as I've gotten older I've tried everything I can to at least learn some forms of general knowledge on the internet because it was really all I knew to do. My parents were stressed and overworked as I grew up, and our house was in a terrible condition. They would constantly yell at me to stop using screens and help them but I just couldn't. A bit unrelated but if you're wondering, yes me and my brother almost never left the house at all. As I've been growing up my mom has been repeatedly abused by her partner, which has probably caused a handful of traumatic experiences to me and my siblings and effected our mental health(in case your wondering, I have 3 siblings, one of which no longer lives with us and two of which have already finished school.).
Earlier today I went inside of a public school for the first time in years, albeit anxious. Me and my younger brother were given a tour of the building and introduced to some of our teachers and thats all that happened. We expected a test that would determine our grade level or something or if we could go to school there but nope. BUT. My main worry is that I'm 100% not smart enough and I'll have to hand in loads of empty papers which will be embaressing. The only skill I'm confident in is social studies which I practiced extensively on a website called IXL.com. (I should have just practiced math :( I should have just practiced math.) I only know some math like what letters mean what most symbols mean (except parenthesis ironic LOL) but that doesn't mean I'm any good at it. I won't be able to follow any instructions on worksheets because I won't know what the instructions mean. I was a little less stressed about it at my grandpa's because my grandpa has a son 1 year younger than me who didn't do too well at school, and he needed my help for his science homework and I basically did most of it for him and corrected almost every question he got wrong.
My younger brother has to do the same with very little schoolwork done in his life to go off of. DCF believes that my younger brother has mental illnesses/disabilities that were not being met by my parents(Gee, I wonder why I had so much trouble in school and my parents didn't even try to find out why I was struggling). So my brother has it 100x worse than me but I'm too stressed to pay attention to him too much (sorry...).
I know someone will ask why my worksheets are empty and I won't know what to say which will suck... Ive left a lot of things out as well because I'm mostly going off of what I'm feeling right now and this isn't easy... ill answer any questions, though.
Edit because this is important: I'm also trying to act as if I want to go back to my parents' house to the people investigating my case, and my parents are working hard to try to get me back. I do want to go home. Although I think my parents are not entirely innocent because no one that acts the way they do (neglecting our mental health, being non compliant with the law) are innocent. I'm NOT saying its their fault. They're likely struggling as well. I want to go home because I feel like they're the only chance I have at catching up in schooling, and I miss some of my hobbies that my grandparents won't help me to continue doing, and I love my family.

2024.05.08 00:53 AlexRogansBeta Blind Taste Test of Local Donuts

Blind Taste Test of Local Donuts
Hello Victoria,

Here's another dispatch from the Victorian Society for the Scientific Study of Food (VSSSF). We're simply a group of friends who periodically get together to eat delicious things and needlessly rank them. It is "scientific" inasmuch as we use rigorous methods to randomize, double-blind, and then rank the foods. But these results are not replicable, nor should they be considered representative. It's just for fun and a good way to hype up our local food producers.

On May 5th, 10 adults in their 30s gathered to determine which donut-specific bakery in the GVA makes the best donuts. Rivalries in this category are hotly contested amongst Victorians. Some people (like me) swear by Empire. Some people swear by Yonni's. But there are also new entrants in the market: Doughnut Vault, Frickin' Delights, and Rhino. Rather than arguing about it, we put it to the test!

METHODS

Bakeries in No Particular Order

Doughnut Vault is a really small operation, functioning as a "pop-up shop" hosted out of the Public Market.

Frickin' Delights is a similarly small operation that opened up on the corner of Broad and Yates. They don't have a working webpage at the time of writing, but here's their Facebook page.

Empire Donuts has been a longtime staple in the city. They have a location in Cook Street Village, as well as in the Yates Street Arcade.

Yonni's is perhaps the longest running specialty donut shop in the city. They sell out of Discovery Café locations.

Rhino is a fresh import from Tofino. They're recently opened up a location in Langford.

There are, of course, other bakeries across the GVA that sell donuts. The intent with this double-blind taste test was to focus on donut specialty shops: places that essentially only make donuts. Or, who focus their bakery's identity on donuts. Rhino was probably the only "stretch" in that sense, since they also have other baked goods on offer. But, they really hype their donuts as a centerpiece to their baked offerings. So, we included them. Also, as a sort of aside, an intent of all VSSSF reports is to hype local food joints! Showcasing new entrants to the market, like Rhino, falls squarely within the values of the VSSSF.

Categories

We originally intended to have categories of donuts to rank. We envisioned 4 categories as Basic Glazed, Chocolate, Fritter, and Wild Card.

The Basic Glazed category would have ideally included… well, a basic glazed donut with no icing, frills, or fluff. As it turned out, many of these donut places simply didn't offer such a thing. One place I called was adamant that "all our donuts are glazed" and that they don't use icing. The nuance of this statement was lost on me, and looking at all their donuts, they all had icing on them from where I am sitting.

Alternatively, if a bakery did have a glazed donut, it was maybe a sour cream glazed. Which, we all know, is wildly different than an old fashioned glazed, for example. In the end, the concept of this category necessarily morphed into "Basic Glazed/Vanilla ". And even at that, it was really a struggle to find a donut from each of the five locations that fit into this category. Even more of a struggle when they changed the order on me at the last minute... In the end, here are the five donuts that were tested in this category:
Doughnut Vault: Vanilla Bean Glazed
Frickin' Delights: Strawberry Dunkaroo*
Empire: Yuzu Vanilla
Yonni's: Sour Cream Glazed
Rhino: Vanilla Sprinkle**

*The order I made from Frickin' Delights was for "Vanilla Birthday Cake". Upon arrival to pick up the order on the morning of the event I noticed that what was in my box looked an awful lot like the Strawberry Dunkaroos on display. I inquired, and was told that they were "basically the same thing with artificial strawberry flavouring added". It was too late to re-jig all the categories to make this fit, so we just ran with it.
** The Rhino Vanilla Sprinkle was the only "Basic" donut on offer, but it was gluten free, which had an enormous effect on the results.

The Chocolate category was similarly challenging to create. Ideally, we wanted it to only be a basic donut with a chocolate dip. But not all places offered a basic chocolate dip donut. In the end, we modified this category to be "Chocolate Centric". Meaning, it was a donut that was structured around its chocolate-ness. We tested:
Doughnut Vault: Chocolate Dip
Frickin' Delights: Chocolate Strawberry Dip
Empire: Chocolate Sprinkle
Yonni's: Chocolate Dip Ring
Rhino: Triple Chocolate

The "Fritter" category is pretty straightforward, and ended up being pretty straightforward. The only hiccup, so to speak, was that Frickin' Delights doesn't have a fritter on offer. So, only four bakeries had showings in this category.
Doughnut Vault: Bourbon Apple Blondie
Empire: Apple
Yonni's: Maple Apple
Rhino: Apple

Then, since each bakery really specializes in doing wild donut flavours that had no consistency across locations, we opted for a fourth "wild card" category. This category was intended to highlight the wacky and the creative. Selecting one wacky and creative donut from each bakery would have been impossible, and would have done each bakery a disservice. Since, that's where they put all their love in. So, this category was double the size of the other categories, featuring two donuts from each location.
Doughnut Vault: Pear Ginger White Chocolate & Persian Ice Cream
Frickin' Delights: Brown Butter Sea Salt & Blackberry Lemonade
Empire: Tajin Peach & Prickly Pear Margarita
Yonni's: Honey Lemon Cruller & Guava Cheesecake
Rhino: Maple Bacon & Sour Cream Glazed***

*** Readers will note that there is a Sour Cream Glazed from Yonni's in the "Basic Glaze/Vanilla" category, and a Sour Cream Glazed from Rhino in the "Wild Card" category. Despite the names, these are fundamentally different donuts. The Sour Cream Glazed from Yonni's is a sour cream donut with regular glaze. The Sour Cream Glazed from Rhino was a regular donut with a sour, creamy icing. That, or they gave me the wrong donut in the order.

Sampling Strategy

Donuts were cut into quarters and randomized using little colour-coded toothpick flags with numbers written on them. Each colour of flag corresponded to a category. For example, all the blue flags indicated the "Chocolate-Centric" category. Then, the numbers represented the individual donut and the bakery it came from. However, the numbers were randomized within each category. For example, Blue 2 might have been from Rhino, but Purple 2 might have been from Yonni's.

In this way, eaters were mostly unable to keep track of which donut came from which bakery. There were some exceptions. Our most fervent donut eaters (myself included) had eaten the Yonni's fritter enough to know which it was right away. The donuts from Frickin' Delights were all easy to identify owing to their size. And Doughnut Vault had a particular way of "plating" their donuts with garnishes that it was easy to identify them, too.

However, since none of my participants had ever had a donut from Frickin' Delights or Doughnut Vault before (myself included) those details were only known to myself. Since, I did all the ordering, cutting, and flag randomizing. Meaning, for the most part, my participants really were blind to the origin of each donut.

Each donut was ranked as "Good", "Better", and "Best", since there's no such thing as a bad donut (though, some participants have since argued that yes, some of the donuts were bad; see below).

Participants needed to eat one piece of each donut, to rank them on a worksheet, and then deposit the flag into a cup labelled "Good", "Better", or "Best".

For the categories "Basic Glazed/Vanilla", "Chocolate-Centric", and "Fritter", participates were required to indicate one "Best" in each category. They were also required to indicate at least one "Better" in each category. Though, they had the option to allocate up to two donuts to the "Better" rank. The remainder had to go into "Good".

Since the "Wild Card" category was doubly large, these requirements were scaled to match. Participants were required to identify two "Best" donuts for this category, a minimum of two and a max of four "Better" donuts, and the rest had to be ranked as "Good".

The scoring was ranked to give extra weight to the "Best" category. "Best" was awarded 5 points. "Better" was awarded 3 points, and "Good" was awarded 1 point. This was done to ensure that people actually put a lot of thought into which donut they ranked as "Best". Since, that one vote could be worth nearly as many points as all their other votes combined depending on how many "Better" rankings they gave out.

RESULTS

Per Donut, Per Category

These results represent the donut that received the highest scores in each category.

According to our results, the best "Basic Glazed/Vanilla" donut was the Yuzu Vanilla from Empire (29 pts). The runner up was the Vanilla Bean from Doughnut Vault (21 pts).

The best "Chocolate-Centric" donut was the Triple Chocolate from Rhino (25 pts). The runner up was the Chocolate Dip from Doughnut Vault (19pts).

The best "Fritter" was Yonni's Maple Apple Fritter (34 pts). The runner up was the Bourbon Apple Blondie from Doughnut Vault (30 pts).

The best "Wild Card" was the Maple Bacon from Rhino (28 pts), and the very close runner up was Empire's Tajin Peach (27 pts).

Highest Scoring Bakery Overall

The bakery that had the highest overall score was Rhino (115 pts), followed closely by Empire (112 pts). Then there was a bit of a gap after which Doughnut Vault (101 pts) and Yonni's (96 pts) scored quite closely. Frickin' Delights (68 pts) scored quite poorly in the aggregate because they didn't have a Fritter.

Highest Scoring Bakery Excluding "Fritter"

Removing the "Fritter" category, the bakery that had the highest overall score was still Rhino (96 pts) , but only by one point. Empire came in close second (95 pts). Then there's a bit of a jump, and Doughnut Vault (71 pts), Frickin' Delights (68 pts), and Yonni's (62 pts) all came in relatively close to each other.

Top "Better" vs "Best"

Empire Donuts had the most "Better" points at 51, while only having 45 points in the "Best" rank.

Meanwhile, Rhino had the most "Best" points at 65, but had less "Better" points at only 30.

Highest Scoring Donut

The donut that had the highest score overall was the Maple Apple Fritter from Yonni's with 34 points (3 votes for "Good", 2 votes for "Better", 5 votes for "Best").

DISCUSSION

Eating 1/4 of 24 donuts (totaling 6 whole donuts/fritters) proved to be too much. Some of our participants found that after eating the equivalent of 4 or 5 donuts, they were feeling… not great, and needed to stop. As a result, we only have partial data in each category.

Everyone picked which category they would begin with individually. As a result, 5 out of 50 votes were missing from "Basic Glaze/Vanilla"; 15 out of 50 votes were missing from "Chocolate-Centric"; 2 out of 40 votes were missing from "Fritter; and 18 out of 100 votes were missing from "Wild Card".

It also meant that there were diminishing returns on taste as we went along. From my own perspective, the category I did last was much harder to judge because I was simply burnt out on sugar. Though, it made the "Best" ones easier to identify because at that point, if something really did stand out in terms of flavour, it really stood out.

Since there were missing votes from each category, I am not stressing about those missing votes. Though I am sure some fancy math could be used to compensate, this was all just for fun anyways.

But, readers should keep in mind that the most disproportionately "absent" category was "Chocolate-Centric". As people began trying the different categories at different times, word got out that the Chocolate-Centric category was generally disliked, which meant that when people who had left that category for last finally got to it, a few simply opted not to try since they were already feeling ill.

Speaking to that category, a large majority of those who did do the Chocolate-Centric category voiced that they really wished there was a "Bad" option in that category. And several (myself included) voiced the opinion that they had arbitrarily given one the "Best" rank simply because it was required by our methods. This category was essentially universally disliked, and the results from this category are probably the most disputable.

Yonni's overall score was quite good until you accounted for the Fritter. The Fritter's score of 34 points accounted for 35% of Yonni's total aggregate. Indicating that while Yonni's sells good donuts, their standout really is the fritter. Their overall score was also dragged down by the Cruller (see below). So, they had both a standout donut (Fritter) and downer donut (Cruller) that really make their results wonky.

Empire didn't have the highest "Best" score, but they had the highest "Better" score. Given that our scoring system required a lot of "Better" votes to accumulate as much as the "Best" rank, this strongly indicates that Empire's donuts were the most liked generally. They might not have had the standout donut in each category, but they had the broadest general appeal.

Outside of Rhino's standout donuts like the Maple Bacon and Sour Cream Glazed, they didn't shine. Those specific donuts from them really stood out to nearly everyone, giving them high scores in their categories. But in other Categories, Rhino didn't really do exceptionally well. Second last in the "Basic Glaze/Vanilla" and 2nd last in the Fritter. For the Basic Glaze/Vanilla, however, it should be noted (again) that the Vanilla Sprinkle was gluten free, and that was obvious in the results.

Time played a huge factor in this taste test, and it was something we simply couldn't control for in a single event. Everyone knows that the best donut is a fresh donut. However, since Doughnut Vault didn't even open until 11AM, gathering all the donuts together and preparing them (cutting/placing flags) meant that we didn’t start the event until 1:30PM. By then, some of the donuts had been out of the oven and fridge for many hours. We also hosted the event at an open-air seaside location, meaning that as the eating went on (and it lasted for roughly 2 hours), the donuts got more and more stale.

I suppose that this "time factor" was controlled for in the sense that they were all degraded in terms of freshness by the time we got around to eating them. But, it had an inordinate effect on those denser donuts which ended up being quite chewy less fresh they were. This was particularly noticeable in the Fritter category. These already dense, chewy donuts were doubly dense and chewy. Still tasty, though!

Knowing these donuts a bit, I noted that the donut which deteriorated the most dramatically was Yonni's Cruller. I usually love their Cruller, but after sitting out for several hours the Cruller was really quite bad. If you know anything about Crullers, this makes sense.

The ones that survived the time factor the best appeared to be the cake-based donuts. Namely, those from Frickin' Delights and several from Doughnut Vault. They held their texture well, given the conditions.

Doughnut Vault won the prize for the prettiest donuts, in my opinion. The "Persian Ice Cream", for example, actually had chopped pistachio and dried rose petals on it. And all their donuts had a flashy garnish. In fact, some of the names were a bit misleading given that one of the flavours appeared to mostly (only?) be present in the garnish. For example, the Bourbon Apple Blondie Fritter tasted like a pretty standard apple fritter with some bourbon in there, and the "Blondie" came from a chunk of blondie brownie on top; the Pear Ginger White Chocolate had a hunk of white chocolate fudge on top, with minimal (if any?) notes of white chocolate in the donut itself.

In the "Best" rank for "Wild Cards", there were some obvious standouts that each bakery should be quite proud of. While I already highlighted Rhino's Maple Bacon and Sour Cream Glazed, Frickin' Delights' Brown Butter Sea Salt & Blackberry Lemonade scored quite competitively, as did Empire's Tajin Peach & Prickly Pear Margarita donuts. The Tajin Peach really was something fun, being the only "spicy" donut on offer. Many people voiced struggling whether to put it in the "Best" or "Better" rank.

CONCLUSION

Which is all to say, Vitoria has some crazy delicious donuts out there! All these bakeries are killing it, and it is awesome to see some much innovation and creativity in this "food group". May this inspire everyone to go out and eat donuts for weeks, support local bakers, and explore Victora food more generally.

2024.05.08 00:17 coryandstuff C960 PA Question (DM2)

So I just took the PA for Discrete Math 2 and barely passed which threw me off since I understood the textbook and also felt really confident on all 6 units of the supplemental worksheets…
The biggest challenge of the PA is that the questions were so different than anything I had seen and asked things in a completely different way than I had seen up to that point.
Do I just need to study the PA and get used to how it asks its questions?
I talked to another student and they said the OA is harder than the PA but the questions are closer to the supplemental worksheets.
Is this true?

PaperHelp charges according to assignment length and turnaround time. The prices are also based on the complexity of the work.
High school projects start from $10 per page, while undergraduate papers cost $13 per page. Bachelor papers cost $19 per page, and Professional papers cost $21 per page.
You can also select your writer based on how much you are prepared to pay. There are three tiers: basic writer, advanced writer, and top writer. Advanced writers and top writers are native English speakers, but they cost more to hire.
You should enter your assignment details into the site so you can get a full idea of the costs before you pay someone to undertake your project.
It's also worth noting that you can get discounts on big orders (5 percent off orders over $500, and 10 percent off orders over $1000). If you use PaperHelp frequently, you'll build up credits with the company, and with this, you'll enjoy extra savings. Sometimes, you may be able to get as much as 15 percent off.

EssayPro: Best for Urgent Tasks

EssayPro is another assignment service that helps students manage their assignments online. It's a particularly good option if you need an academic level assignment on a short deadline.
The site offers assignment help service options in all the following areas:
No matter what academic subject you're struggling with, you can get your college assignment completed with online assistance from EssayPro.
You can also ask experienced writers to rewrite your own essays, or do your homework for you.

What Does EssayPro Cost?

EssayPro costs from $10.80 per page, which is a fairly affordable price. However, the price will go up if you have a tight deadline, so if you're looking for timely delivery, you are going to have to pay more for it.
To get started, you have to make a deposit to the website, but the writers won't get this until you have actually hired someone. When you have, the deposit goes to the writer, and the rest of the funds will be held by the site.
You can then release the full payment when you are happy with the writing help you have received.

Can You Talk To The Assignment Writers?

EssayPro makes a point of personalizing its writers, so you can view all the applicants that you might end up working with, and decide who is right for you. To select a writer, complete an order form with the details of your assignment.
You can read the writer's reviews and their "about me" information before you settle on your assignment helpers, ensuring you get a great match for your assignment.

Is EssayPro Confidential?

Like other online assignment help services, EssayPro keeps its user information confidential to prevent discovery. You should be able to have someone write your assignment online without anybody being able to tell that you have done this.
You can upload samples of your own writing so that the assignment helpers are able to see your style. They can then copy this to create a university assignment that sounds exactly like your work.

What If There Are Issues With The Assignment Services?

One of EssayPro's biggest draws is that it offers unlimited free revisions. You can simply request that the assignment helpers change things, and you'll have a professional assignment that you are satisfied with in no time.
You should also receive plagiarism free work, and you can request a free originality report if you are concerned about this.
However, there can still be issues when you get your assignment online, and if you do have problems, you can get in touch with the customer support team. This offers 24/7 support, so you don't have to panic if you need assignment help in the middle of the night.
The site also offers a team of QA experts who will step in if something goes wrong with the academic writing services. They can review the assignment online and make sure that it fits the criteria that you provided.

When Do I Need To Submit The Assignment?

If you want a cheap assignment, you need to submit it as soon as possible - but you can get very quick turnaround times with EssayPro. Papers can be completed in less than 6 hours, which is very important if you have a university assignment due soon!
The success rate is likely to be higher if you give the writers time to complete the assignment to your satisfaction.

When you put in a request, you can tick a box that requests native English speakers work on your assignment - or you can just ask for a fluent writer if you think that will suffice for your piece of work. Either way, you can get the perfect writer for your assignment.

Is BBQPapers Confidential?

Yes, BBQPapers makes efforts to ensure that all data is kept confidential, only giving the necessary information to the online assignment helpers to minimize the risk of discovery.

What If There Are Issues With The Assignment Services?

If you have any problems with the service you receive, you can contact the customer support team.
There's also a 10 day window for requesting free revisions, so if students raise concerns, these can be addressed. Furthermore, you have a 60-day money back guarantee, meaning that you can recover the costs if the assignment isn't up to your standards.

When Do I Need To Submit The Assignment?

It's important to make sure you are submitting your assignment in a timely manner, so that the writers have enough turnaround time to give it back to you.
Although BBQPapers says it can take as little as 3 hours to return a project, it will sometimes take longer, and you don't want your important uni assignment to be late because you haven't got it back yet.
Make sure you create assignment deadlines so the writer knows how long they have to complete the piece.

2024.05.07 02:42 SwarleyAUS Sum rows of numbers with like IDs

Hi guys, been plugging away at trying to remember how I solved this problem in the past with no success. I am trying to generate a summarised list of item totals from one worksheet on another, and finding that SUMIF and SUMIFS aren't working. My data on sheet two looks like:
Sheet 2 data
and I have a list of unique item 'numbers' on sheet one, where I want to report total quantities, i.e. end up with something like this:
Sheet 1 example result
I've tried:
=SUMIFS(Sheet2!$E$2:$E$90,Sheet2!$C$2:$C$90,A2)
and
=SUMIF(Sheet2!$C$2:$C$90,A2,Sheet2!$E$2:$E$90)
where A2 is the first in a list (row) of unique 'number'/criteria on sheet 1, C column is 'Number' and E column is 'Quantity'. Both these formulas return 0. I'm pretty sure I used INDEX and MATCH in the past, nested into a math function somehow though, but google says SUMIF/SUMIFS should work however it doesn't. Thank you!
