Marks on silverplate goldfeder
I've tried to do some research on Mappin & Webb. I haven't found any information that'll help me date this. It's 6 inches across and about an inch and a half tall. Pretty sure it's silverplate, even though it isn't marked as such. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you! U.S. location.

2023.02.25 20:57 ValoisSign Question about vintage silverplate markings
I was browsing a thrift store and saw a Birks silver tray - presumably plated because no purity mark. It did, however, have the number 28 under the Birks hallmark.
I have been trying to figure out that number and I haven't found anything specifically regarding Birks, but some sites say that such numbers can refer to the number of grams of silver used. On the other hand I hear a lot that there's barely any silver in silverplate, which does not really jibe with their being an ounce in this plate. It is heavier than an ounce of course but if it was microns thick I don't see how it could possibly have that much.
So firstly, is that what this number is likely referring to? And secondly, putting aside that antique Birks itself has value (I probably should have just bought it, it's basically Canada's Tiffany's), if it is a good price for those 28 grams, does the silver plating process make it too hard to extract to justify getting it for the silver content.
Thanks very much! I have followed this sub awhile and enjoy seeing everyone's collections. If sterling is allowed I would love to post some of my stuff sometime.
EDIT: it does not indicate being electroplated or indicate a base metal like "epns" or anything, if that makes a difference

2023.01.29 19:00 CarBallAlex Celtics agents connection to the front office and who they might be more likely to target
Just want to preface this with it’s not an exact science, but there do seem to be trends of certain front offices being in regular contact with certain agents. Most notably the Rich Paul and Los Angeles connection, I decided to go through the Celtics’ player representation and see if I could find any sort of similar trend.
All of the players listed are going to fit into the Schroder TPE just for the sake of simplicity with assuming we will have to give up minimal assets to acquire them (picks, Pritchard, Hauser, or other end of bench player) and not a player that’s part of our top 8 “playoff lineup”
Easily the most players represented is Jason Glushon of Glushon Sports Management. I’m aware Brown was recently partner with Donda Sports but since that has been terminated, I assume he will continue to use Jason Glushon for future contract negations and that’s what’s listed for his agents on every website I can find.
Current players: Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Al Horford, Sam Hauser
Former players: Joe Johnson, Moritz Wagner
Targets: Jeff Green (C/F, Denver), Caleb Houstan (F, Orlando), and Jericho Sims (C, New York). Jeff Green is old and only under contract for this year, but I think Jericho Sims is the most intriguing player here. It’s doubtful that New York would give him up with Mitchell Robinson being sidelined and will need him, but he could certainly bolster our backcourt.
Some other names include Furkan Korkmaz and Donte DiVincenzo, but I don’t think these are targets because it’s doubtful we would trade with a rival or they don’t fit our needs.
Next is the connection with Excel Sports Management, which has a few different agents representing them. First is Mike Lindeman:
Current players: Derrick White
Former players: Aaron Nesmith
Targets: Goga Bitadze (C, Indiana), Boban Marjanovic (C, Houston), and Marko Simonovic (C, Chicago). None of these players particularly jump off the page (I love Boban), but Bitadze could be a very cheap grab if Indiana keeps Turner and still has Jalen Smith, Isaiah Jackson and Daniel Theis on their books next year while Bitadze becomes a RFA this summer.
Other players include Ayo Dosunmu, Bryn Forbes, and rookie Johnny Davis but are likely unobtainable or don’t fit our needs.
Next with Excel Sports Management is Sam Goldfeder.
Current players: Blake Griffin
Former players: None
Targets: Tari Eason (F, Houston) and Simone Fontecchio (F, Utah). I don’t think Houston would trade Eason seeing as he’s a rookie and Fontecchio doesn’t seem interesting or would help us out all that much.
Other players: Dalen Terry and Peyton Watson. Both are guards which we don’t need right now.
Jeff Schwartz also represents Griffin as part of Excel Sports Management, which brings the interesting name of Andre Drummond (C, Chicago) into the mix, who Chicago has been rumored to be open to trading.
Finally we have Michael Tellem of Excel Sports Management.
Current players: Danilo Gallinari
Former players: Daniel Theis
Targets: Jakob Poeltl (C, San Antonio), Ousmane Dieng (F, Oklahoma City). I’m only listing Poeltl here because of the rumors of the Celtics being linked to trading for him, as he does fall outside of the TPE range.
Next agent is Jeffrey Wechsler of 24/7 Sports Management
Current players: Jayson Tatum
Former players: None
Targets: Vernon Carey Jr (C, Washington). Nothing much to note here except he fits a need of a backup center.
Jonathan Isaac is the only other player represented by Weschler, but he is likely outside of our price range without giving up something significant.
Next agent is Kevin Bradbury of REP1
Current players: Robert Williams
Former players: PJ Dozier
Targets: PJ Washington (PF, Charlotte). I think this would be a great addition to our roster, I’m just unsure if we have the assets to acquire him without giving too much up.
Other players include TyTy Washington, Tre Jones, Max Christie and Devon Dotson but all don’t fit our current needs.
Austin Brown of Creative Artists Agency
Current players: Malcolm Brogdon
Former players: Romeo Langford
Targets: Torrey Craig (F, Phoenix), Justise Winslow (F, Portland), Chris Duarte (F/G, Indiana), Chuma Okeke (F, Orlando), Keita Bates-Diop (F, San Antonio). This is essentially a list of wings that could replace the Sam Hauser minutes, but I’m not sure any of these players move the needle all the much in the way we are looking to do for playoff contributors.
Aaron Mintz, who is also an agent at Creative Artists Agency, represents Gary Harris and Terrence Ross, who have been mentioned as possible buyout options, as well as KZ Okpala (F, Sacramento).
Jim Tanner of Tandem Sports and Entertainment
Current players: Luke Kornet, Justin Jackson
Former players: Noah Vonleh
Targets: Willy Hernangomez (C, New Orleans), Omer Yurtseven (C, Miami), Serge Ibaka (C, Free Agent). Hernangomez was recently rumored to be if interest to the Celtics. I personally think Ibaka is washed up but he wouldn’t take anything to acquire currently so it’s something the Celtics could explore.
Jeremy Sochan is also represented by Tanner but it’s unlikely we would be able to acquire him.
Erik Kabe of BDA Sports Management
Current players: Grant Williams
Former players: Josh Richardson
Nothing really to note here except it’s possible Richardson returns if he’s bought out and wants to play for a contender.
Last is Alex Saratsis of Octagon Athlete Representation
Current players: Mfiondu Kabengele
Former players: None
Targets: Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (F/C, Oklahoma City).
Other players include Dyson Daniels but New Orleans would not trade him, and Alec Burks who could be a buyout option.
I’d also like to add Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports & Entertainment
He represents Gordon Hayward, Dennis Schroder and Nik Stauskas, all having played in Boston recently, which could add the following players to potential targets:
Xavier Tillman, Killian Tillie, Isaiah Roby, Santiago Aldama, Udoka Azubuike, Frank Kaminksy and James Johnson.
Overall, there does seem to be a fair amount of overlap with certain agents getting their players to certain teams, likely just as a result of being in contact with those front offices, so it is interesting to see how these rumors like with Poeltl and Hernangomez pop up around this time of year, and who could be a little more likely to wind up in Boston.
Overall I’m not crazy about any of the names on this list with the exception of PJ Washington and potential buyout options, but it is an interesting list to keep an eye on since Stevens mentioned on the radio it’s likely they’ll look to improve but won’t make a deal just to shake things up. It’s clear they want to keep this core and perhaps turning to the buyout market or simply moving a player who has not been seeing the floor like Griffin or Jackson for an upgrade might be their best option.

FAQ
I live in Guatemala/Canada/Honduras/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?! Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.
Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list? Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.
Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list? Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).
Can I donate all my money to you? No
Can you help me promote my game? Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.
Your list is full of errors and now my printer is out of cyan and won't print! Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on thoughts and prayers, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

Silver / silverplate? Serving Dish - Markings on bottom aren't entirely clear, but it does have 1875 and a scale which typically suggest some percentage of silver. This weighs a little less a pound and is approx 11" x 6". The letters look like LEIS - S - R - S - Co 1875. There are also numbers printed beneath this which are illegible. I don't know if the scales or the date can be trusted. There is some light oxidation. Is it Silver or Silverplate and what's it worth either way?[Silver? Serving Dish ](

2021.08.03 15:49 dank_mood Why Kyle Lowry is nearly a perfect fit next to Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo on the Miami Heat (ESPN+)
IT'S FITTING THAT the Miami Heat's latest all-in reload involved sending out Goran Dragic in their mammoth sign-and-trade for Kyle Lowry -- the first major domino of this NBA free-agency period. It was Miami's flipping two first-round picks to acquire Dragic at the 2015 trade deadline that set off the first round of fearful snickering among rivals -- clucking that Pat Riley was mortgaging the team's future because that future would belong to his successor. The clucking was always laced with anxiety: Somehow, the Heat -- slick, beachy, with a friendly tax regime -- would climb out of whatever hole Riley dug. Three years later, it appeared as if the Heat might be buried without a shovel. Chris Bosh's blood clot issues upended the promising 2015-16 Heat featuring Bosh, Dwyane Wade and Dragic. The Heat struck out on Kevin Durant in 2016 and then Gordon Hayward the next offseason, and responded by re-signing their own free agents to huge deals: Hassan Whiteside, Tyler Johnson, Kelly Olynyk, James Johnson, Dion Waiters. As the calendar flipped to 2018, they all looked like cap-clogging overpays whose contracts would be hard to move. Justise Winslow, the manna-from-heaven pick that represented Miami's salvation, was injured and developing unevenly. Their quiver of first-round picks was half empty. When I spent a week in Miami that January, those in and around the franchise were as uncertain about their path forward as I had ever seen or heard them. They were determined, hopeful, but unsure. On the Lowe Post podcast last year, Dan Le Batard, who knows Riley well, recalled strolling Heat headquarters around that time with Riley and passing walls adorned with photos of Waiters and Whiteside. "He, like, snorts in disdain," Le Batard said, "and he just blurted, 'Our so-called leaders.' And I'm like, 'Oof. This is not a good place for these people to be.'"

Two years later, they were in the Finals -- one of the greatest short-term turnarounds ever executed from an on-paper position of weakness. The Heat nailed late lottery picks (Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro) that usually yield league-average players at best; turned undrafted guys into starters and key contributors (the newly ultra-wealthy Duncan Robinson, Kendrick Nunn, Derrick Jones Jr.); and swapped one second-round hit (Josh Richardson) into the best star that was realistically available to them -- Jimmy Butler, about to sign a mega-extension that will take him into his mid-30s, sources said. They caught some breaks, as any team does amid a successful retool. The Butler situation with the Philadelphia 76ers went haywire. Teams passed on Adebayo and Herro in favor of worse players. The Heat got off a lot of those bad contracts with minimal pain thanks to injuries and desperation in trading partners, and the Memphis Grizzlies' lust for Winslow -- with the Heat sending out James Johnson and Waiters in that deal, and somehow netting Solomon Hill, Andre Iguodala, and Jae Crowder. Crowder was the last puzzle piece that made sense of the 2020 Heat: the small-ball power forward with enough size, toughness, and 3-point shooting to unlock Adebayo-at-center lineups that had two-way balance. The Heat in 2020 demurred on one last trade for Danilo Gallinari, wary of committing too much future cap space over too many years -- and wagering Crowder and Iguodala would perform. The same shielding of cap space cost them Crowder, who signed a long-term deal with the Phoenix Suns after Miami's Finals run. The Heat last season never found a replacement, toggling between imperfect solutions. Makeshift lineups were either too small, with Butler at power forward and multiple below-average perimeter defenders, or lacking in shooting. AP Photo/Lynne Sladky ONCE THE HEAT finalized their deal for Lowry on Monday, the biggest remaining question about their roster -- perhaps aside from depth -- was whom Erik Spoelstra would start at power forward. Could they find another Crowder? (The other big question following Lowry's signing -- bigger than the game of point guard roulette going around the league -- was this: What is Philadelphia's backup plan after missing out on Lowry for the second time in four months? Are they just going to stand pat and wait out the Ben Simmons market?) Candidates flew off the board: JaMychal Green, Jeff Green, Nicolas Batum, others. And then Miami capped its day with a bombshell: stealing P.J. Tucker -- switchable, mean, still trucking along -- from the postseason starting five of the NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks. Those Bucks, of course, obliterated the Heat in the first-round of the 2021 playoffs with an emphatic, avenging sweep. That humiliation was catnip to skeptics who dismissed Miami's 2020 Finals appearance as the fluky product of the bubble and the restarted pandemic season from hell. There is some truth to the notion that Miami was well-suited to the isolated, all-basketball-all-the-time setting of the Orlando, Florida, bubble. But three of the final four teams from Orlando trudged through unremarkable seasons, with the fourth -- the Denver Nuggets -- slumping away once injuries destroyed its guard rotation. (They were exhausted too.) The Heat in 2020 were the only postseason team to take more than one game from the champion Los Angeles Lakers. They would have a hard time reaching the Finals again, but that didn't mean they weren't good or deserving.
2021 NBA offseason
The NBA's 2021 free-agent signing period has begun, just days after the 2021 NBA draft. • Latest free agency and trade news and buzz • 10 questions that will define the offseason • Biggest decisions for all 30 teams • Team-by-team FA lists for 2021 and 2022 • Tradeable draft assets for every team But the Heat recognized the status quo wasn't good enough, with Milwaukee having proven itself on the biggest stage and the Brooklyn Nets looming as title favorites entering the 2021-22 season. And so they did their best to rekindle the magic of 2020. Tucker is a downgrade from Crowder. He is five years older, and starting to show his age. Tucker only launches from the corners, and his mark on those shorter 3s dropped to 34.7% last season -- and 31.4% during a postseason in which he was a total non-threat. The spacing will look cramped at times with Butler, Tucker, and Adebayo on the floor. Crowder might be the league's streakiest shooter, prone to some ugly backboard bonks, but he is willing to chuck from anywhere and hits at about the same accuracy from the corners and the wings. He's nimbler than Tucker with the ball, quicker as an extra-pass guy. But Tucker showed in hounding Durant in the second round of the playoffs that he still has much to give on defense when the stakes are high. A well-timed hot streak from the corners could swing a playoff series. No one remembers you shooting 31% on corner 3s for the season if you go 6-of-10 in the right pair of playoff games. The Heat hope the upgrade from Dragic to Lowry compensates for any drop-off from Crowder to Tucker. Miami was able to pull this sign-and-trade because it coaxed Dragic back last offseason on a two-year, $37 million deal with a team option in Year 2 -- an overpayment in annual salary in exchange for flexibility. The Heat struck the same agreement with Iguodala. More from Zach Lowe

HOW CAN MIAMI keep doing this? Some of it lies in its inherent advantages -- the lack of a state income tax in Florida, and the attractiveness of living in Miami. But it goes beyond that. Players who thrive there grow to love the franchise. Even having been cast aside, Dragic adores the Heat, sources said. Serious veterans appreciate Riley's commitment to winning. "We never once spoke about Miami as a city," Butler's agent, Bernie Lee, told me last year in explaining Butler's desire to be there. "Obviously it's an amazing place with amazing people, but Jimmy wasn't going there for the beach. Since he's gotten there, I think we have gone out to eat less than 10 times and one of them was the Super Bowl. We didn't even talk about the tax advantages. The only questions he asked were of the background of the people involved and how they would build out the team." A healthy Lowry is almost a perfect fit next to Butler and Adebayo. He is a more accurate and prolific 3-point shooter than Dragic, and a much stronger defender. Lineups featuring any two of Dragic, Robinson, and Herro had two spots for predatory opposing offenses to pick at. Lowry vaporizes one of those spots. A closing five of Lowry, Robinson, Butler, Tucker, and Adebayo is formidable. Against some opponents, it will be safe to exchange Herro for Tucker. There is so much improvisational creativity to Lowry's game -- so much more than rote high pick-and-rolls. He can do plenty of that, of course; the Lowry-Adebayo dance will be an important part of Miami's arsenal, and perhaps a bulwark when Butler rests.
ESPN Daily podcast
Monday through Friday, host Pablo Torre brings you an inside look at the most interesting stories at ESPN, as told by the top reporters and insiders on the planet. Listen Lowry bobs and weaves in the midrange, cutting randomly, working an impromptu give-and-go, setting unexpected screens, sneaking in for offensive rebounds. Butler and Adebayo live in that space from 20 feet and in. The Lowry/ButleAdebayo trio overflows with ad-libbing IQ. All three are good to great passers. Adebayo is emerging as a very good midrange shooter. His bully-ball game against switches is coming. Butler is reliable from midrange, in part because of his ability to draw fouls and double-teams. Cleverness and versatility in tight confines can overcome so-so spacing. Miami's offense is going to sing in the dead zone of the midrange. Robinson's ability to attract two defenders will often give Miami's three stars a head start, some territorial advantage, when the ball reaches them in the midrange. Robinson has grown as a one- and two-dribble pick-and-roll ball handler, and his handoff game with Adebayo is lethal in pulling two defenders toward the arc -- opening easy slip passes. Lowry is a nasty screener, and he will set ball screens for anyone and everyone: Butler, Robinson, Adebayo -- whatever presents the most danger to the opponent. The diversity of the Heat's offense -- how they seem to run multiple systems within the same possession -- is hard for opponents to adjust to. It's just a little different -- unpredictable, always moving, hard to grasp. Lowry amplifies all of that. THERE ARE LOTS of questions before putting Miami on the level of Brooklyn and Milwaukee. Lowry is 35, and dropped off a hair last season. Maybe it was the inevitable malaise of playing in Tampa Bay instead of Toronto, and for a team that never recovered from a huge bout with the virus in the middle of the season. Small guards don't tend to age well, but Lowry fits some of the characteristics of one we might expect to buck that trend: smart, stout physically, ace shooter, and someone who didn't pile up as much wear and tear as a reserve early in his career. Still: Lowry's age places this nucleus on a short, urgent timetable. They have to win immediately. Even minor slippage from Lowry torpedoes that plan. They are also somewhat shallow. They re-signed Dewayne Dedmon and Gabe Vincent late Monday, and might be too close to the hard cap -- triggered by acquiring Lowry via sign-and-trade -- now to retain Kendrick Nunn. The Heat had talks with Bobby Portis, sources said, and the Portis-Adebayo frontcourt would have offered an intriguing combination of shooting and size. Portis would have been Miami's new and probably superior version of Meyers Leonard and Olynyk -- center-ish bigs the Heat paired with Adebayo (another center) because Adebayo can defend anyone, allowing Spoelstra to hide weaker tag-team partners. Portis re-signed with the Bucks instead. Precious Achiuwa, a promising second-year player, is headed to Toronto as part of the Lowry trade. KZ Okpala is perpetually almost ready. The Heat will find a player or two on the minimum. (They have no other choice at this point.) Herro disappointed in his sophomore season after rollicking through the bubble, but he's just 21. Development is not linear. A leap in Year 3 is possible.
The Bucks just won the title, and the Nets looked as if they were going to roll there before James Harden and Kyrie Irving got injured. Losing Tucker to the Heat hurts Milwaukee, but you probably can't put the Heat higher than No. 3 in the East at this moment -- and both the Atlanta Hawks and Sixers would have something to say about that. But the Heat are better today than they were 24 hours ago, and they didn't give up all that much to revamp their team. If things go right, they'll have a puncher's chance in the East. What they really surrendered was future cap flexibility in committing big long-term money to Lowry and Butler as they age. Did you expect anything less from Riley? If you get Butler and reach the Finals, this is what you do. And history suggests that if the hole gets deep, Riley will find a golden shovel.

The NBA offseason has begun. Before last offseason, the 2021 NBA free-agent class was seen as potentially historic. LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Paul George, Rudy Gobert and Jrue Holiday were expected to be available. Instead, they all signed contract extensions with their existing teams, drastically reducing the star power in this class. This summer, Chris Paul, Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan are at the head of the free-agent class. Only five teams are projected to have significant cap space this summer, with the New York Knicks leading the way with up to $50 million available. With the free-agent landscape drastically altered from what it was expected to be, we could see another busy offseason of trades. No matter what happens, we'll have all the latest news, rumors, buzz and analysis right here. MORE: 2021 and '22 FAs Breaking down biggest moves

2021.06.25 00:40 GMGsSilverplate I intend to found a silver recycling company when silver breaks free from the manipulation
Hi guys I love silver. I have a decent sized stack of coins bars n rounds and I have also spent a year accumulating silverplated items. Not just a few trays and a set of flatware and calling it a collection, but I'm up to tons of trays, tea pots, bowls, flatware and other items. I clean up all the silverplate in a 50 mile radius. My reasoning for doing so is that silver has never been economic to recover when used but this could change in the blink of an eye.
We all know this makes sense if you sort of sit back and think about it. We always say that most of the silver we use we lose to landfills. Absolutley true, but you also know what? We're used to repeating what Mike Maloney says "silver might become unnafordium then unobtanium." The day that this occurs we won't be able to stack physical due to suppressed futures and paper prices. In fact we'll be lucky enough to afford a few ounces a year with our discretionary income. It will be quite similar to if we stacked gold. We would need to save for a few months in order to afford an oz of gold, we would need to save a few months to afford thar 10 oz bar.
So my point is that when this occurs, supply will need to come online from other sources, mainly recycling. When people mean supply from recycling they mostly mean sterling from silverware or jewelry, but never from silverplated items. In fact everyone will be quick to parrot that the silver from silverplate is not worth going after because there hardly is any. But is an anyone aware that old silverplate can have close to 1.5% by weight of silver and more than 1 gram per spoon or fork? For instance a common marking on a piece of flatware is punched "A1" according to some sources have around 2g of silver when it was manufactured. And Sreetips got a yield of about around 4.5% with a tray! (Could be an unusually large yeild). But if you guys are still with me, the gist of the economics are at a worst case scenario of assuming 1% yield of silver from my scrap, that will be 20 lbs of silver per ton of silverplate I try to pay 3$/ lb for so 20 lbs of recoverable silver for around 6-8k on top of base metals of copper and nickel, and sterling that I find in the boxes, plus the antique value of any silverplate I find beyond the scrap value. I hope to answer any questions you guys have.

2020.10.19 17:26 cilantro_samosa [OC] Which front offices and agents are the 3 major newsbreakers connected to? I went through 6000+ tweets to find out!
If this sounds somewhat familiar, that's because I did a
2019-2020 version and posted it back in March.
In terms of changes from that post:
- I've expanded the timeline to tweets from September 27, 2018. This is the first official day where each of Shams, Woj and Haynes were at their own respective companies. Shams moved to the Athletic from Yahoo in August, and Haynes moved from ESPN to Yahoo in September.
- I have a new section on agents!
- thanks to Lambchops_Legion for the idea
- I've also expanded the criteria on when a tweet could possibly be linked to an agent
TL;DR Tracked tweets of Woj, Shams and Haynes from 2018-2020 to see whether any of them report on a certain team or a certain agent's players more than their counterparts. Here is the main graph concerning a reporter's percentage of tweets per team separated into three periods (2019 season, 2020 offseason, 2020 season). Here is a separate graph with the Lakers and Warriors, because Haynes's percentages would skew the first graph.
During times like the NBA trade deadline or the lifting of the NBA free-agency moratorium, it’s not uncommon to see
Twitter replies to (or Reddit comments about) star reporters reference their performance relative to others.
Woj is the preeminent scoop hound, but he is also
notorious for writing hit pieces on LeBron (
sources say it’s been widely rumoured that the reason for these is that Woj has always been unable to place a reliable source in LeBron’s camp). On the other end of the spectrum, it has been revealed that in exchange for exclusive intel on league memos and Pistons dealings, Woj wrote puff pieces on then-GM Joe Dumars (see above Kevin Draper link). Last summer, Woj was
accused of being a Clippers shill on this very discussion board for noticeably driving the Kawhi Leonard free agency conversation towards the team.
This is the reason I undertook this project: to see whether some reporters have more sources in certain teams (and certain agencies) than other reporters.
First I’ll explain the methodology, then present the data with some initial comments.
Methodology
To make this manageable on myself, I limited myself to tracking the 3 major national reporters: Shams Charania of the Athletic, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports and the aforementioned Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
- I didn’t use beat reporters, as most (if not all) of their sources would be concentrated on their local team
- Others that I considered but ultimately decided not to track:
- Brian Windhorst of ESPN (double-dipping in ESPN)
- Zach Lowe of ESPN (I consider him more of an analyst)
- Marc Spears of ESPN (harder to sift through Twitter feeds, as he posts a lot more unrelated/non-news-breaking content)
- Marc Stein of the New York Times (same as Spears)
- Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer (same as Lowe)
The time period I initially tracked for was from January 1, 2020 to
the end of the regular season March, but after finding a Twitter scraping tool on GitHub called
Twint, I was able to easily retrieve all tweets since September 27, 2018. However, a month ago, Twitter closed their old API endpoints, and Twint ceased to work. I used
vicinitas.io but the data loading became more time-consuming.
Therefore, the tweets are up to the date of October 15 2020. How I determined information was by manually parsing text tweets by the reporter (no retweets):
- This means I did not include images or multimedia appearances such as television, radio or podcasts. The rationale for this is that I simply don’t have the time to listen/watch and record all the instances of providing information through sources on these mediums.
Now, I didn’t take every single text tweet:
- I didn’t include direct statements, be they from players or front office folks
- I separated them, along with podcast guests in another tab
- I didn’t include the summary tweet that Woj & Shams love to do: “Story filed to/Story on [employer]:..” because it doesn’t add anything apart from a link to a story (also, I personally don’t want to be called an ESPN/Yahoo/Athletic shill)
- If the tweet added a reporter’s own analysis to someone else’s tweet, it was not included
- If it was new information, the tweet was retained
- Tweets that related solely to retired players were not included: mainly Haynes reporting Dwyane Wade joining CAA, as well as the unfortunate passing of Kobe Bryant on January 26
- I grouped multiple tweets about the same subject delivered around the same time frame (such as trades) into one, as doing otherwise would arbitrarily inflate totals
- There’s no hard and fast rule for whether or not to group tweets
- For example, the big 4-team trade that created the Pocket Rockets was grouped in full
- On the other hand, the Miami-Memphis trade was split up because the full details came like a day later
- Sometimes, I used my judgment to determine whether a tweet’s underlying information would have come from a source, and therefore whether I should include that tweet or not
- For example, consider the All-Star tweets: Haynes and Shams both posted the All-Star starters, but looking at the time signatures led me to believe that this was simply relaying the information from the TNT reveal
- On the other hand, both Shams and Haynes posted tweets disclosing the All-Star Reserves before the TNT reveal
Next, I had to assign possible teams to each tweet:
- Items such as changes to the league calendar, the naming of All-Star Reserves and salary cap projections were immediately attached to an NBA source
- Injuries and trades were fairly straightforward, assigning these tweets to the participating teams
- Items such as league mandated fines/suspensions, invitations to All-Star competitions and game protests were credited to both a general NBA source, as well as the related team(s)
- Direct sources from agents or mentions of specific agents were attributed as a catch-all “Agent”
- In the former, team was not included: examples include Matisse Thybulle’s agent on not being selected for the Rising Stars Game or Royce O’Neale’s agents confirming his contract extension with the Jazz
- In the latter, team was included: examples include two Knicks switching their agent to Rich Paul
- New addition: anything related to a player's status with a team were also attributed to agents (qualifying offers, extensions, option decisions, waivers, and contracts/deals)
- I then found which agents correspond to which players (big shoutout to realgm.com and the Wayback Machine)
- Rumours were slightly more difficult
- As we know very well, league sources is an exceedingly vague term
- Instead of attempting to pinpoint a rival executive with a motive to make a comment, I took the “Occam’s Razor” approach and assumed that the teams involved had someone talk to the reporter
- When it was impossible to even determine a participant team, it was the general “NBA” source to the rescue
With all the methodology out of the way, here’s the data! (
Here’s a link to a full Google Sheet)
Teams
Here's a graph of
number of tweets per team per period, with the colours denoting reporter.
On a quick glance, here's which teams saw a significant period-over-period increase in number of tweets:
- Shams: Brooklyn, Milwaukee, New York, Sacramento
- Haynes: Atlanta, Brooklyn, Memphis, New York, Portland
- Woj: Atlanta, LA Clippers, Orlando
And here's which teams saw decreases over a period-by-period basis:
- Shams: Chicago, New Orleans, Oklahoma City
- Haynes: Golden State, New Orleans
- Woj: LA Lakers, Memphis, Minnesota, New Orleans, Washington
The problem with just using number of tweets is that it's not close on totals between Haynes vs. Woj or Shams. Here's a graph showing
total number of tweets in each period for all three reporters. Haynes's most reported period doesn't even stack up to the least reported period of Woj or Shams.
Instead, let's look at
percentage of tweets per team per period.
- Chris Haynes has the highest percentage of tweets relating to the Detroit Pistons in all three periods. He also reports on far more Portland news than Shams or Woj.
- Shams' Brooklyn edge is evident. The Athletic was also the outlet that Kevin Durant felt comfortable talking to about his positive coronavirus test. As well, Shams reported on Spencer Dinwiddie's quest to tokenize his contract (similar to bitcoin).
- Adrian Wojnarowski has increased his percentage of tweets regarding the LA Clippers period-over-period, but so have the other two reporters.
- It's surprising that Dallas's numbers are so low, considering they're a good team with an international superstar.
- My hypothesis from my previous post is that Shams and Woj each have capable Mavericks deputies in the Tims (Cato and MacMahon, respectively) and decide to leave that market alone
- Shams does have the highest percentage of Mavericks tweets in all three seasons however.
Now, you'll notice that there's two teams missing from the above graph: the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Here's the graphs for those two teams. As you can see, they would skew the previous graph far too much. During the 2019 NBA season, 27% of Chris Haynes's qualifying tweets could be possibly linked to the Warriors, and 14% of his qualifying tweets could be possibly linked to the Lakers.
Agents
Here's the top 10 agents in terms of number of potential tweets concerning their clients.
Agent | Haynes | Shams | Woj | Total |
Rich Paul | 15 | 28 | 24 | 67 |
Mark Bartelstein | 4 | 16 | 30 | 50 |
Jeff Schwartz | 3 | 10 | 25 | 38 |
Bill Duffy | 2 | 13 | 14 | 29 |
Leon Rose | 1 | 12 | 15 | 28 |
Aaron Mintz | 2 | 9 | 15 | 26 |
Juan Perez | 5 | 10 | 8 | 23 |
Aaron Goodwin | 11 | 8 | 1 | 20 |
Steven Heumann | 1 | 6 | 12 | 19 |
Sam Permut | 1 | 13 | 5 | 19 |
Woj has the most tweets directly connected to agents by far. It wasn't uncommon to see "Player X signs deal with Team Y, Agent Z of Agency F tells ESPN." The agents that go to Woj (and some of their top clients):
- Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports (Bradley Beal, Kyle Lowry, Gordon Hayward)
- Jeff Schwartz and Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports (Khris Middleton, Nikola Jokic, CJ McCollum and Kevin Love)
- Steven Heumann and Austin Brown of Creative Artists Agency (Andrew Wiggins, Chris Paul, Donovan Mitchell and Zion Williamson)
One thing I found very intriguing: 15/16 of tweets concerning an Aaron Turner client were reported on by Shams. Turner is the head of Verus Basketball, whose clients include Terry Rozier, Victor Oladipo and Kevin Knox. Shams also reported more than 50% of news relating to clients of Sam Permut of Roc Nation. Permut is the current agent of Kyrie Irving, after Irving fired Jeff Wechsler near the beginning of the 2019 offseason. Permut also reps the Morris brothers and Trey Burke.
As for Chris Haynes, he doesn't really do much agent news (at least not at the level of Woj and Shams). However, he reported more than 50% of news relating to clients of Aaron Goodwin of Goodwin Sports Management, who reps Damian Lillard and DeMar DeRozan.
Here are the top 10 free agents from Forbes, along with their agent and who I predict will be the first/only one to break the news.
Player | Agent | Most Likely Reporter |
Anthony Davis | Rich Paul | Too close to call, leaning Shams |
Brandon Ingram | Jeff Schwartz | Woj |
DeMar DeRozan | Aaron Goodwin | Haynes |
Fred VanVleet | Brian Jungreis | Limited data |
Andre Drummond | Jeff Schwartz | Woj |
Montrezl Harrell | Rich Paul | Too close to call, leaning Shams |
Gordon Hayward | Mark Bartelstein | Woj |
Danilo Gallinari | Michael Tellem | Woj |
Bogdan Bogdanovic | Alexander Raskovic, Jason Ranne | Limited data, but part of Wasserman, whose players are predominantly reported on by Woj |
Davis Bertans | Arturs Kalnitis | Limited data |
Thanks for reading! As always with this type of work, human error is not completely eliminated. If you think a tweet was mistakenly removed, feel free to drop me a line and I’ll try to explain my thought process on that specific tweet! Hope y’all enjoyed the research!

2020.09.12 23:18 GeneralCheese Solid Silver Metal Fork?
Here's something I can't seem to find a straight answer on. One of my forks is marked with only "Solid Silver Metal". Some say it is solid pure silver, but I saw on one site an appraiser said it meant that it is solid "silver colored" metal, with only a silverplate surface. Does anyone have any proof one way or another?

2020.09.04 17:41 advocatesparten How seriously was the Lancaster considered for the nuclear attack missions?
I know that since a basic model B29 couldn't carry Fat Man and Thin Man or at least the 1943 estimate of their sizes and the Silverplate modifications had to be made, which as a factory redesign. This is why Norman Ramsey concluded that the Lancaster which could carry the bombs should also be considered.
This video (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XX9ptCNpik&t=18s&ab_channel=MarkFeltonProductions) suggests that the consideration for using the Lancaster was much more advanced than the simple discussion Ramsey had with some RAF Bomber command types in Canada (as I had been led to believe) but he discussed it with the designer Roy Chadwick and also recommended it to Groves and the RAF went as far as to start to train crews. How accurate is it?
I always thought the Lancaster bomb bay dimensions and payload was used to tell the designers absolute limit on how big the bombs could be rather than going so far as to be officially recommended to the pretty Anglophobic Groves.
It was within (just) the range of a modified (but a depot not factory-like B29) Lancaster and historically the Lancaster did carry out a few raids similar in range and payload to the historical atomic bomb missions, for instance, against the Tirpitz.

2020.07.04 20:09 igorufprmv Old spoon at the local thrift store
| I went to the local thrift store this morning (MN, USA) and found a spoon that I thought was either silver or silverplated. Regardless of the material, I actually liked the spoon, and the price was good (29 cents), so I got it. I'm trying to find out it if is silverplated or actually silver. Below you will find a photo of the front and back of the spoon. There are markings on the back of the spoon, which read "1847 ROGERS BROS XII" and the Meridean logo that I did my best to zoom on the photo (it's tiny, no bigger than 0.1 inch). I've scratched the spoon, the material inside seems to be the same as the outside. I tested it on a strong rare earth magnet I have, it's non magnetic. I've looked on 1847 ROGERS BROS, it seems like they made mostly silverplated stuff. Can someone that has a greater knowledge on this chime in on what the spoon material might be? I'm leaning towards silverplates due to simple lack of identification of higher quality silver. If silverplated, any idea on what might be the material inside? I appreciate any inputs! 2020.03.31 23:30 Twoweekswithpay [Stein] Less than 20 players leaguewide have negotiated all-you-can get deals which feature the maximum allowable salary advance alongside an accelerated six-month payment schedule...Nine ar represented by Klutch Sports on contracts structured and negotiated by agent Rich Paul & attn. Mark Termini
More From Stein in his Tweet Thread:
- NBA players receive paychecks Wednesday but have not been assured further payments. Some details to keep in mind if the NBA seeks to withhold 1.08 percent of each player's 2019-20 salary for every game missed by invoking a "force majeure" clause designed for emergency situations:
- Roughly 90 percent of NBA players will have received less than half of their 2019-20 salaries by the time April 1 checks go out because they are on 12-month payment plans, league sources estimate
- The vast majority of players are on 12-month payment plans and will have received only 10 of their 24 checks for the 2019-20 regular season by the time April 1 payouts are complete. – Brooklyn’s Garrett Temple of the NBAPA told Joe Vardon & Sam Amick there are more than 400 (players).
- Nine who secured these all-you-can-get deals, which pay out 90-plus percent of their 2019-20 salaries by April 1, are represented by Klutch Sports on contracts structured and negotiated by agent Rich Paul and attorney Mark Termini
- The nine Klutch players are naturally led by LeBron James and include John Wall, Kentavious-Caldwell Pope, Dejounte Murray, Miles Bridges, Darius Bazley, Darius Garland, Terrance Ferguson and Trey Lyles. Next season it will be 10 when Draymond Green’s contract extension kicks in
- Less than 20 players leaguewide have negotiated all-you-can get deals which feature the maximum allowable salary advance alongside an accelerated six-month payment schedule
- Other known players in this select club include the Nets’ star duo of Kevin Durant (repped by Rich Kleiman) and Kyrie Irving (Roc Nation), Detroit’s Blake Griffin (Jeff Schwartz and Sam Goldfeder) and Chicago’s Otto Porter (David Falk and Danielle Cantor)

Heck of a recruiting sales pitch for KLUTCH! Edit:
UPDATE - looks like the Force Majeure option affects all players, regardless of payment structure, and with players like Klutch clients, the “Hyper-accelerated” payment structure actually is potentially a detriment now to those players.

2019.10.02 04:58 Catman_1975 Help identifying some weird spoons I got with some other silverware at an auction.
So I bought some silverplated silverware at an auction last week. I got it cheap and was sorting through it when I came across these spoons I'm having trouble identifying. I doubt they are silver since nothing else was. Any help would be appreciated.
Here is a link to pictures of the spoons and a picture of the most legible mark on one of them.
