I’m (29F) leaving for the Air Force in August & quit my job recently to prepare. My husband (30M) works full time & expects to do absolutely nothing & just relax when he gets home. I clean up around the house, cook his meals from scratch, do laundry (wash, fold, & put all clothes away), & take care of our dog (feeding, walking, etc.) while he’s at work. All of which are done or nearly done by the time he gets home.
Lately he’s been saying I’m “slacking” & “getting lazy on him” because I asked him to fix his own plate the other night. I cooked & he wasn’t ready to eat so the food sat out for a while & I had packed it away & cleaned the kitchen. Once I came upstairs & got comfortable in bed, he was ready for his food. Then last night I got takeout & he asked me to pick up some cookies from Crumbl for him, which I did. While on the phone with him driving home, I asked if he could feed the dog so I can go straight to fixing plates & he said he was busy watching videos (on my laptop) about graphic designing (although he has a business partner who does designs for him). I was a bit annoyed and said I was just asking for a little help, but never mind, I’ve got it. As I walked in the door, he was getting the dog bowl to mix the food (I boiled ground turkey for the dog earlier while he was at work to mix with his kibble). He told me he wasn’t ready to eat yet, but his food was in the fridge & I told him to let me know when he wants it. He didn’t say anything, and warmed his food & ate later.
When we were laying in bed that night, he asked me if I’m okay & if being a wife is overwhelming? He questioned if I understood the duties of being a wife & tried to make me understand that he expects to just come home and relax after work. He doesn’t mind walking the dog or taking out trash at night because it’s dark out, but even those little things I asked are problematic because he’s tired & I have the time to do them. After talking to him, he apologized for calling me lazy, but I still feel bad about it because that’s clearly how he feels because he’s said it more than once.
I have no problem doing things for him & I genuinely try to keep up with everything & rarely ask him to make his own plate (I can literally count on 1 hand how many times I have in the 2years we’ve been together). I just think it was unfair to say I’m lazy or question my capabilities as a wife because of those small things. I honestly feel a little resentment towards him about it now. Am I overreacting? Am I wrong/lazy for expecting him to do little things from time to time?

I just need to vent about the girls next level pod episode where bridget, Holly, and hefs son, Marston talked about crystal hefners book.
I made a post on that reddit but they're mostly loyal holly-bridget fans.
Here's my thoughts:
Crystal has her faults for sure but they just seemed to be going IN on her. I didn't really care for their insistence that there would a "correct" or "right' way to relay her experiences. They kept saying "well she should have just said it like this" it's like but why? It's doesn't seem very fair to say what a person should and should not do when it comes to explaining their own personal experiences. "If she wanted the bag and run then she should just said that" like what? This is HER book lol
Holly has been acting weird with crystal for years! Back on old Twitter accusing her of copying. Holly was the one who left and wanted to back off being associated with hugh and the mansion soooo....At the end of the day does it matter? Like I don't even remember or know wtf she was specifically accusing crystal of copying. I just remember her constantly making the claim. Honestly it's silly and a bit childish.
The other thing I found bizarre is the claim... "why didn't she just leave" like aren't we evolved enough as a society to dispell "women can just leave"...women stay in abusive situations well past the point the average person would.
For fucks sake doesn't holly more or less make a claim like that too in her book.... that she stayed hoping things would get better?
IN THE SECRETS OF PLAYBOY the exposé on Hugh they depicted holly as someone who played 3 dimensional chess and manipulated her way to number 1 girlfriend and pushed other girlfriends out and what not. (This was claimed in a few episodes not just the st. James episode) I'm 100% sure holly would disavow those claims and would call it hersay so why accuse crystal of the same thing?
Marston is set on depicting his dad as, "a man with faults but at the end of the day we was a jolly guy who enjoyed board games."
I don't blame him for wanting to depict his dad that way... he is his dad, after all.
But goddamn talk about bending the truth and re writing history. Hef drugged girls, had them perform mass orgies through the use of coercion playing on the girls need for room and board, food and money not the mention the hope of being featured in the magazine. Holly and bridget openly ADMIT they wanted to be in the magazine! Hugh chose women to the youngest possible legal age. There's also allegations of beastiality.
There's no such thing as being there "for the right reasons" anyone who actively participated in his life inadvertently co-signed his behavior. However, I WOULD NEVER blame the women for the actions of that idiot. But just because you turned a blind eye and began to bond with your capture doesn't mean you're there for the right reasons.
Everyone was aware that he was a perverted dirty old man who had sex with newly aged adults. And they stayed. Why? Everyone had their reasons. Your reasons isn't more valid than anyone else's.
Also house mold comes from water damage, Marston himself corroborated there was mold.
Also the mansion was purchased right before hefs death and completely renovated after he died because the mansion was a piece a shit by that point and became a hoarders den.
Holly has spoken at length about how there was piles and piles of things everywhere and dog shit stains on the carpets and that Hugh refused to open a godamn window never allowing fresh air to circulate
The mansion was purchased in the 60s? Was never PROPERLY tended. I feel like the surface it seemed fine but footage of marys office/Hugh's room was always overwhelming to look at with the amount of piles of crap everywhere.
Did crystal exaggerate things or bend the truth. I have no doubts that she did.
Is she fucking with hefs legacy... absolutely, as she should. Did she take money from him? Absolutely, as should. Does she want to take 100% credit for her success and exploit the hefner name for her benefit while denying Hugh credit for her success when he definitely supplied her for the means to be successful? Absolutely, as she should.

I am in my Ed recovery for more then a year now. I climb (often, but I listen to my body and not overdo it) and run (sometimes) as those are the two exercises that brings me joy. I make sure to always eat an extra meal after the workout and I (really hard) try never to force myself to do it if I don’t want to.
I eat (mostly, still changing myself with certain food ) what I want and when I want. I made a huge progress in how I think about myself, I don’t do body checks and I thought I am fine. But i realized I am addicted to my Apple Watch. I don’t care anymore about closing the rings much, but I need to do a certain amount of steps on the days when I don’t have „workouts”. It’s not that hard coz I have an active dog, but I need to press „outdoor walk” in my watch when I take her out. I am tired of this controlling me. I feel it’s the last thing I hold on to… The thing is, I love my Apple Watch for not having to carry my phone with me and just be able to contact people or listen to music. So it’s not as simple as just removing it. But also maybe I’m just saying this so I can hold on to this?
Please help, did any of you struggle with that? Is it just as simple as „just” stop wearing it? Any tips? I feel so stupid that I have to write about it on Reddit…

So my girlfriend had a dog who she adored that passed away a few months before I met her a year and a half ago. When we met I had 3 huskies at the time (because I needed backup vocalists for my Acapella band), all rescues, and she sort of fell in love with them. Since we have been together, I lost my oldest boy to an injury, but hadn't thought about getting another pup, as my other two are bonded to me really hard.
A few months ago she mentioned to me how she has been thinking about getting another dog. I told her I thought it was a good idea. It had been about 2 years since her girl passed and she was ready to start the healing. So I start looking at the shelters, local social media groups, and rescues and keep sending photos of pups to her.
A few weeks ago I learned that my great aunt passed and so I had to go to her funeral. At the same time, my gf had a trip planned to visit her parents a few states away, set for about a week after I get back.
I take my girl Hannah, as she needed some 1 on 1 training with me and leave my other boy Viktor at home with gf. She messages me and says she asked to see one of the pups I sent her a link to. A few days later she has an appointment to see a completely different puppy, a 6 month old husky. She sends me pictures later in the day of this cute little 12 week old pup who won her over instead.
Her litter mates definitely had some husky features like the mask or spitz tail, but then there's this girl who looks nothing like a husky lol. She's 14 weeks old right now and her ears just started standing up and I swear this dog is a malinois.
Girlfriend took off after having the pup for about a week, so I ended up getting stuck with this poor pup who didn't understand what was happening (just like poor Viktor when a new pup showed up in the house while I was away). He was beyond pissed when I got home lol. It took him like 2 days to forgive me for allowing this to happen.
I've raised probably a dozen puppies in my life so far and this girl was, putting it mildly, an absolute terror when gf took off. For the first 2 days I didn't have even 2 minutes to myself. That said, in this week I've had her, I've come to love her and we've reached an understanding. I'm not going to say I didn't love her or wasn't going to love her, but we just didn't have that bond at the beginning. After all, she picked my girlfriend, not me, which is what the gf wanted. She wanted a "her" dog, which is to say a dog that either prefers her or is bonded with her, as my dogs clearly prefer me and follow me around/stay near me when I'm away from her.
We've gone from screaming in the car endlessly while solo to riding with the other pups happily and riding solo happily. We've gone from accidents in the house to her telling me she wants out, from maybe 6 accidents a day down to 1. We've gone from zero leash experience to wearing a harness happily and fundamentals of leash walking, though she just stays by my side at all times regardless. We've gone from chewing on bad things to chewing on good things. From not understanding of dog play to playing with both my pups. From no training at all to sit, come, stay, and we're working on shake hands. She even learned the "load up" procedure for the car from the other pups.
I've never seen such a smart puppy who is motivated entirely by wanting to make me happy. She likes food, but it's secondary to praise for her. I'm absolutely stunned how fast she is learning. None of my huskies took to instruction this well, though they were older when I adopted them.
Which leads me to the subject line. Man, there might be some husky in there, but I sure don't see it. We only know the mom was part husky. We're getting a DNA panel done so we know what to prepare for; I'm used to high energy/working dogs but I hear malinois is a whole other ball game. I thought maybe she looked more like a GSD but the vet said the ears looked more like malinois than Shepard or husky ears and I don't disagree.

I am writing this with tears streaming down my face. Yesterday I had to say goodbye to my baby Luca, my childhood dog.
My poor baby was diagnosed with lymphoma over a month ago. He was a 12-and-a half-year-old Golden Retriever. The lymphomas started to spread all over his body very quickly and grew larger and larger as the days went by. It was aggressive cancer, and in a matter of two weeks he took a turn for the worse.
The vet was very plain and straightforward with us. Due to his age and other conditions that he already had, such as arthritis and neurological disorders, it was not worth making him go through chemo. That would have just prolonged his suffering, and he would have had a lot of side effects from it.
In the last few weeks, he slowed down a lot and stopped being himself. He could not stand on his own, he could not bark or breathe because the tumours on his throat prevented him from doing so; he couldn’t sleep through the night, he relieved himself inside the house, he did not want to eat, his eyes were sunken… We had to be home 24/7 to keep an eye on him. Watching him deteriorate was really heartbreaking. There was no point in suffering any longer.
Last week we set an appointment for Monday so we could have some days to say goodbye. In his last days, I didn’t leave home at all, only to take him out for his walks. We took lots of pics together (he hated taking pics!), slept with him, did his paw print and a cast, kept some of his fur and had lots of conversations with him.
I think he sensed his end was coming. We had such a hard time trying to take him to the vet because he did not want to leave home. I cried all the way to the vet. Watching him being euthanised was the most heart-wrenching thing I have ever experienced in my life. My mom was with me. My dad and my brother did not want to witness it. I knew I had to be there and there was no way I would let my baby leave this world without me being there. It’s the least I could do. I told him how much I loved him and thanked him for all the good years we’d spent together. I kissed and hugged him tightly throughout. What was most painful was when he kept staring at me once he had already crossed the rainbow bridge. I don’t know how I will ever be able to get the image of him seeing dead out of my head. It was devastating.
I'm 22, and he's been with me for more than half of my life. He was like a brother to me. Right now, I just don’t know how I will be able to move on… I am simply devastated. I couldn’t sleep tonight, and when I woke up I broke down again, seeing the house so empty without him around. I cried more when I grabbed his fur and smelt it. It feels so unreal. It has not sunk in yet. I've been trying to mentally prepare myself for this moment in the last year, but the truth is that you're never prepared for it...
I will miss his walks, seeing him go under the table waiting for food scraps to drop, following me around the house, seeing him greet me at the door when I get home, his barks asking for food… It will be a hard pill to swallow.

To start off with I live in a house share of 3 individuals and a dog, we are previous childhood friends. One flatmate is extremely antisocial and I am trying to figure out if I have been gaslit.
To give some context I’ve been living with my flatmates partner against my will since September 2023. Both me and my other flatmate tried to make clear we were uncomfortable about this months ago. He is extremely messy and had previously punched other men whilst drunk on more than one occasion. We gave these as reasons for us not wanting to be left alone with him in the house. Instead he was given a house key and it took months for this to be readdressed, any discussions we had were forgotten and messages we would send were ignored. In April 2024 we have been told his housing situation was “tricky” and that the flatmate in question needed him here as he was her only support system. She did not give the option of him moving out but instead told us he might be moving out in May 2024. In those 6 months we have been forced to pay his food bill for weeks (we previously had a communal food supply and had to separate and label our food because she kept feeding him without any contribution ) We have had to clean up continually for them both (both of them are very messy and often left spaces needing to be cleaned before being used.) We are told that because food is now separate bringing this up as an example of her disrespect is unacceptable. I have brought up that it is still extra labor in having to clean more often, and spend more money for cleaning products and was told that isn’t true and that they contribute fairly ( Since discussions of us feeling extremely used he has occasionally replaced coffee and toilet paper, paid bills once as of April 2024, does the dishes and occasionally does the bins) we are the ones doing most of the cleaning and always have done so this is an unfair split of labour in my opinion (the dog is also hers so we are cleaning up after 2 adults and a dog)
Neither of them have attempted to communicate over anything, my flatmates partner turned up one day with his dad and moved his things, when I told my flatmate this was not cool they laughed in my face and made a dismissive joke. Neither of them communicated to us that he had been thrown out of his previous house and would be living here. We would just find him in the house when we were under the impression we were home alone.
I realise I could have spoken to him directly, but for some reason was convinced that it would be snakey towards my flatmate to confront him and ask him why he felt so comfortable to dump his labour onto myself and my other flatmate as a 28yr old grown man, so instead everybody in the house just avoided each other with a very passive aggressive environment, in which we all participated in silent treatment. At its peak myself and the flatmate in question would be shoulder barging each other, which is very toxic and sad.
So far the reason given for him not ever cleaning up after himself was that he did not think it would be appropriate and we created a passive aggressive environment. ( We were very angry in this period, I myself even snapped on occasions where I raised my voice at my flatmate saying cruel things which I am ashamed of. This was in response to me feeling as though I was being used as a personal maid)
To give some more context to my own shitty behaviour spaces in the house were regularly left to a point of being unusable, unless we did it ourselves. This involved a months long flea infestation that was so severe you could not be in the house without being jumped on, we repeatedly tried to address this until the point we just dealt with it ourselves. I have had my TV broken when my flatmate was partying with friends which took months to even be acknowledged and not be told that it was not the right time to ask about it. Myself and my other flatmate have had to buy a separate fridge as we literally could not get our food into the houses shared fridge because we were left little space and were still having to regularly clean out others mouldy food. The dog is extremely reactive, he has anxiety and is often only given 2 or 3 short walks a week and spends the majority of his time in one bedroom, so being in the house with him means constant barking and he has been quite destructive. For months she would leave her dog whilst out partying and ignored all messages trying to bring up this forced labour.
Around this time something in me just broke, I actively tried to be petty and use a tit for tat mentality in how I treated her. This involved a lack of care for her items, refusing to do any labour for her, separating every single little thing, giving each other silent treatment. My OCD had been badly triggered after living in a flea infested house, this caused me to go into overdrive with cleaning where I would snap at any little mess. This was too much from me and it was a little controlling, but the situation was then reframed as me being “controlling” and not allowing my flatmate to ever relax in their house, rather than ever returning to the original upset of forced labour.
(I am going to give an example of a game she enjoyed playing with me here to try and explain what I feel has been done to me. She used to come over and start playfully hitting me, she would then ignore me saying no or stop, then when I blew up she would say don’t talk to me like that and frame it as me being angry and shouting at her inappropriately. I have had to address this with her and she has not played this game with me again, but I’ve seen her do it to someone else since and laugh in their face whilst visibly upsetting them, so I know they still enjoy doing it to others. Though just a silly game, this comfortability with ignoring a no and their ability to genuinely convince herself she hasn’t been given a boundary is one that bleeds into real life. )
On one occasion during an argument regarding labour I shouted at her to ‘fuck off back to neglecting your dog’ and I’m sure there were other things I probably said in an attempt to hurt her as much as I was hurting. I take zero pride in this and am deeply ashamed that I lowered myself to that behaviour. She herself belittled me in front of shared friends telling me “you never do anything for me you only do things for others you do nothing for me” over and over until I left the room. We had a huge row where she came down mid shower (as the hot water goes if multiple taps are on) whilst I was doing her dishes as the kitchen was a complete shit hole. I then told her no I’m not going to stop because i need to use my kitchen, and she told me i was disgusting for banning her from showering I told her she was disgusting for leaving the house as she did (I’m not exactly sure my exact words) she then told me “‘theres no room talking to you when ur like this”. Neither of us were right in this but I am giving it as an example of how toxic it is in the house.
A few days following this I said that if she refuses to discuss anything when she is leaving the house unusable for others and her partner is freeloading that I would report her to the landlord (I am not working on logic at this time but because I have been in fight or flight for months) she then told me it was disgusting to threaten her with homelessness and that she would never do something like that to me. I did not mean it as an intimidation tactic or maybe I did I’m not sure, it’s hard to think logically after being ignored over months.
After the threat I made to contact the landlord we discussed all of this, some of which she acknowledged, we both made an effort to apologise. However she tried to diminish the labour her and her partner purposefully used us for, would not give specifics about him moving out, and refused to apologise for belittling telling me she did not remember and it is not something she would ever say so she doesn’t know what I expect her to do. They told me I was not paying extra or doing more labour with an additional person living here. They have since cleaned the garden of bags of shit and dirty underwear that were left out for months, and made small efforts to be cleaner. However most of the house labour still falls onto us. (Some more context they very recently were injured and no longer can clean right now. This I understand completely however I would be lying if I didn’t feel burdened and obligated to now have to do that labour, or to help them with basic tasks when I can barely look at them without feeling sick, also I am still doing labour for her partner).
We have tried to meet her on every level for a very long time, previously we have had discussions about asking her when she is free rather than just dropping things on her, using a house chat, using a cleaning chart. We have tried to compromise and she has ignored all of these after agreeing to them. When I have gone to ask if she is free I have had her snap ‘what now’ I have seen her roll her eyes to others regarding a cleaning chart she agreed to because others were tired of cleaning for her, ignored all messages in the house chat.
My property has been repeatedly damaged or not taken care of as has others. I’ve had to spend over £100 easily. I am so tired of being ignored, laughed at or given no response at all to continual lack of consideration for others and their boundaries. My reactivity does need to be worked on, yes. However theres only so far people can be pushed before they snap, and I’m terrified that I’m going to break again.
When I’ve discussed this with others who have lived with her to see if they noticed this pattern of behaviour they knew exactly what I was talking about, which worries me.
To sum up I do not feel safe in this house, my back is permanently against the wall as I am just waiting for the next boundary violation at this point. This has already happened in truth as we recently received a letter saying we were overdue for council tax which threatened court if not paid off, I paid off mine and I didn’t bother to ask my flatmate to send over the remaining owed money as I am fed up of having all communication ignored and did not want to wait for her to be bothered to send me the money. If there is something that needs her attention you often need to ask for it to be done over and over which again is labour in the first place. As far as I’m aware this bill is still overdue as I have been completely ignored regarding it.
I do not think she truly realises that she has deeply traumatised myself and my flatmate through giving us no autonomy over who lives in this house or leaving us to care for her dog. My OCD is still pretty bad and being in this house or around her makes my skin crawl. So I guess I am wondering if I have been gaslit? Taking my own toxic behaviour into account I do not know whether I can criticise her or if I am being hypocritical in labelling her as toxic. My memory is too foggy to remember a lot of what has actually happened, but I have this of strong feeling of disillusionment that will not leave. I am stuck in this house until October 2024, and I am trying to just get on with it, but I can’t stop obsessing over what has happened, sometimes it’s all I can think about. I feel too guilty or snakey to contact the landlord as she is a longtime friend and I am afraid she will badmouth me to others if I do so. She is my childhood friend and everything in me is telling me that this isn’t how a friend should treat you. I am desperate to be free of this situation but we have been friends since childhood and she is currently injured and also experiencing a bereavement so I feel obligated to just leave her be. Should I still be trying to meet her needs or do I need to be selfish and remove this person from my life?

Holly has been acting weird with crystal for years! Back on old Twitter accusing her of copying. Holly was the one who left and wanted to back off being associated with hugh and the mansion soooo....At the end of the day does it matter? Like I don't even remember or know wtf she was specifically accusing crystal of copying. I just remember her constantly making the claim. Honestly it's silly and a bit childish.
The other thing I found bizarre is the claim... "why didn't she just leave" like aren't we evolved enough as a society to dispell "women can just leave"...women stay in abusive situations well past the point the average person would.
For fucks sake doesn't holly more or less make a claim like that too in her book.... that she stayed hoping things would get better?
IN THE SECRETS OF PLAYBOY the exposé on Hugh they depicted holly as someone who played 3 dimensional chess and manipulated her way to number 1 girlfriend and pushed other girlfriends out and what not. (This was claimed in a few episodes not just the st. James episode) I'm 100% sure holly would disavow those claims and would call it hersay so why accuse crystal of the same thing?
Marston is set on depicting his dad as, "a man with faults but at the end of the day we was a jolly guy who enjoyed board games."
I don't blame him for wanting to depict his dad that way... he is his dad, after all.

Around where I live, there are a lot of stray cats. I’ve always fed them, I constantly keep a food bowl outside my house for them. I’ve also always wanted to take them to the vet and have someone adopt them but they won’t let me close to them, I understand that they are afraid, and I try to respect their boundaries. One day, one of these cats had a bunch of kittens. I heard that there was a movement in my neighborhood to take the kittens to the vet and adoption, and they got almost all of them, expect one. About a month later, this one kitten appeared in my backyard, my dog was barking at him and I was afraid of him getting hurt, so I took him. He didn’t run because my dog was cornering him. I took him to the vet, and he was very sick, they treated him, and I adopted him myself. I still see his mother outside, and I still feed her. I’ve tried to get her too, but she won’t let me, whenever I get close, she runs away. I feel so bad for taking her only remaining kitten from her. I try to think that he was sick and if I haven’t done it, he’d probably die, and that he’s living a good life with me. But I always see her outside while her kitten is here inside with me. I feel really bad.

Needing some advice on a situation.
I’ve been with my boyfriend for a year and I decided to move in a month ago. His sister is living at his house only pays minimal rent, no bills, no cleaning products and only pays for her food. She is soooo lazy never cleans up after herself or her dog. There’s food left around the house, dirty dishes, she leaves doors unlocked and her dog shits on the new garden rocks. Which she doesn’t clean.
I had been telling my boyfriend about it and complaining that I’m the one cleaning it up and she needs to. It’s been going on for weeks and she’s turned around and said that since I’ve moved in the expectations are too high. And I make her feel like she has to move out.
She can’t get a home loan for another 7 months and its resulted in me feeling unwanted and moving out as of today.
I’m also not impressed with my boyfriend as he says that I’m the one complaining (he doesn’t take blame which he also complains about her). And the fact he’s been talking about me behind my back.
We just refinanced the house and I don’t know what to do. I’m mentally struggling and it’s all her fault. But if he makes her move out then it’ll be blamed on me that I did that to her. And make her and the family hate me. Please help I feel so unwanted.

Hey my Doberman is 1 year and almost 4 months old her weight is around 31-2kg she lost some weight recently doesn’t seem to enjoy or wanna eat her food ( was at the vet and she said she’s fine ) wanna switch her food what is the best for her ? Right now she eats monge salmon

My 6 year old cane corso is suddenly unable to walk on his left hind leg as of today, a few lumps also suddenly appeared on the leg (the ankle/hock according to a dog anatomy diagram).
He is whimpering in pain and just wants to cuddle. He will still eat treats but not his regular food. He cannot put any weight on it. It appears to hurt constantly, but he also flinches if I touch it. The lumps feel soft and spring back when gently poked.
He was fine this morning and by this evening was in that state. It's raining so he did not play in the yard (he hates the rain) and had a very chill day so I can't see that he could have injured it on anything. I will try to link a photo.
Vets have closed for the day and will take him straight in tomorrow. What can I do to help him be more comfortable tonight? And what could this be?
He was recently diagnosed with arthritis as he had become quite slow to move from laying to standing and seemed stiff from time to time, could it be to do with that?). I am really worried but don't know if this is an "urgent after hours animal hospital" situation, or a wait for first thing tomorrow? (It's 7pm)

Chapter thirteen ~Kayara~
They had to ride through grass fields so tall and unruly that even their ponies, easily twelve hands high, were struggling. Only an hour or two more and they would be back in the Elven territories.
Anataya led. Flanked by her guard and her lady in waiting. The kid took up the rear and Kayara had to fight to not look behind her to make sure he was ok and still there. She could hear his pony trying to feast on the grass and the glorious wildflowers, and that would have to be enough. She knew it would only cause upset if she were to bruise his ego as such.
They had seen glorious sunsets and pitch black nights, steep grass-slick hills and uneven forests. The others seemed quite up to the task and readily familiar with camping. With killing their meal. With sleeping on the hard ground.
She had spent the night in a jail cell before, but there had been fresh straw and a blanket. She was indeed glad that it was a warmer season or she surely would have frozen to death thanks to the princesses scheme!
“What’s with that face?” Asked Tyren, a wolfish grin at the ready. She rode her gelding with the proficiency of a soldier. Hers was the only pony that could keep its head up when riding through the tall grasses. The rest of them had to keep their calm and keep a stern, short rein.
“I’m hungry.” Kayara said simply. “You didn’t want the hare that I caught for you!” The boy chirped up behind them. It had looked like a much meaner version of the pet she had kept as a child. Its eyes were so the same as the fluffy piebald bunny she had once adored. She thought back to the now vacant cage in her room. The hand painted river rock that had been made upon her death. Seventeen year old Kayara had horrid penmanship but hadn't been bad with a paintbrush.
She had buried the bunny in the family's pet cemetery just off the main garden, right below her window. The rock was painted with various pinks and purples and yellows. The colors of energy that floated over the bunny when she pet it. Like static on a blanket.
“We should be nearing the city by tomorrow afternoon. If that helps.” Tyren offered. Her eyes were so cold. As if no emotion flickered behind them, so at odds with the olive branch she voiced.
“Thank you Tyren.”
Houses and farms began popping up in clusters, like the fungus on the trees in the woods. They were built in the style of elven homes. Three stories high and dome shaped. Elven country homes were more like live-in garden centers. Massive living walls of braided living cedar formed the exterior and wildflowers grew out of the cracks. Some of the bigger homes had towers protruding, miniature tree castles amongst the most luscious gardens.
“For the last time, we are not going to steal from my people.” Ana said with a voice that threatened violence. No bullshit, no stealing, she wouldn't have it.
“Ana, they'd likely offer you their food if we rode closer to their homes. Close enough that they could see who you are.”
“I said no. If you don’t drop it I will have you whipped when we return.” Anataya said slowly, anger burning in each word spat. Then suddenly kicked her pony into a faster pace. Then faster again and again; grass and dirt from the road flying into Kayara and Tyrens faces and nearly spooking their own equestrians out of control.
They gave chase and found the princess heading towards the fields below a wealthy man's mini palace. You could tell he was an old wealth by the way they grew their fields in circles with trees and flowers that had specific old timey jobs in the garden.
Anataya ran into a corn and bean field. Sunflowers, growing in bunches, stood tall and bright against the cobalt blue skies. Onion flowers were blooming in the underbrush. Likely other crops could be found in the field but Ana was racing ahead into the center where the tangles of beans and such grew the thickest. Then she stopped.
She hopped off her pony and stood for a moment in the center of the now partially trampled field. Then she collapsed to her knees. Tyren rolled her eyes hard as she banked her pony to a stop near the now hysterical princess. Ana wept and screamed and dug at the dirt. Kayara jumped down from her pony in sync with Tyren, and the two of them tried to hoist the princess to her feet. To no avail, Anataya was too far gone into madness to register their words.
A Violet Corona of light began to bleed into sight before Kayaras eyes. It wrapped around the princesses crown as if it was such. Illuminating the man who appeared in the corn and vines, flashlights and shotgun at the ready. Dogs were being held back by another man. Both were Elves, old and wealthy looking. “The Princess- Braeden the Crowned Princess is in our garden!” “Yes Olh K see that.” The one with the gun, lowered the weapon and nodded at his partner to make the dogs stand down. A whistle and the barking ceased. A stray yap came from the tiny brown dog carried by the third man that came into view with another source of truly very bright light. He was clearly the one in charge. He wore a simple pair of baggy trousers and a tight fitting top. An army issued long sleeves meant to endure cold temperatures. Kayara recognized it because her fathers eldest son had been issued the same one.
His silver chain, a bear head pendant, violet eyes. This was a high ranking officer in Antayas dead brother's army. Fucking hells.
Ana stopped crying at the sight of the necklace. On the back of the head would be the officer's information, although it wasn’t really needed. That pendent was named in stories and songs. Kayara had once seen an opera about the living hero, the mantatur slayer and peace keeper of his own kind. The Great Grizzly of Craephen— and this man before them was one of his main commanders. Maybe an advisor!
“Geraeld!” Ana said as if she’d seen a ghost.
“Antay?” Getaeld seemed to be at a loss for words.
Kayara had no idea what to do or where to look as the princess rushed to embrace the man. He held her awkwardly as the dog in his one hand tried to wiggle free. “It has been so long!”
“Not long enough princess.”
“Geri, you know her?” The one holding four big dogs on fine leather leashes, he held them with a farmers grip but his hair and his robes spoke only of wealth.
The other man, the one with the gun now uncocked and limp in his arms; he said “what are you doing here?”
Maybe he was in charge. His unbuttoned trousers and puffed up boxers told Kayara he was the first to be up and alert that there was something going on in his backyard. The one with the little dog passed it to the shotgun guy and strode forward to assess the damage to his property. “You’ve terrorized my boyfriend's property and terrified our dogs. What do you have to say for this, your majesty?”
“I am so terribly sorry Geri… Geri, please forgive me Geri.” The princess dropped to her knees and widened her eyes at him, hands clasping together at her chin.
“You are a child, Majesty.” He glared but yanked her to her feet, hauling her away to his boyfriend’s house. “I shall take you home. Follow me.” The princess began stumbling and pushing him or tripping him up and so, with a heavy and exhausted sigh, he picked her up and threw her over his shoulder. Like a sack of potatoes! The princess proceeded to prop herself up on her elbows and smirk at the amassed crowd. She looked directly at Kayara and winked! Kayara could have sworn the woman's back arched up a notch…

In 2015 I (F) was 24 years old and engaged. My fiancé and I had been together for 5 years, we had an apartment together, and were actively planning a wedding.
I had always wanted a golden retriever and found someone whose dog was expecting a litter of puppies. For 8 weeks I excitedly waited for the day to bring him home. I researched everything a puppy may need and purchased it all (puppy food, a kennel with a divider, training treats, toys, a dog bed, a harness to learn to walk on a leash, etc…).
Bringing him home was one of the happiest days of my life. We did the puppy vet visits and vaccinations, took him to obedience class once he was fully vaccinated, and had the best 2 years exploring our city with him.
Long story short… I got very sick with a chronic illness and my fiancé apparently couldn’t handle what was going on with my body and decided to call off our wedding and leave me.
Our apartment lease was coming to an end and I needed a place to live that I could afford and to also continue working (despite my new chronic illness). My two friends said I could move in with them, but their apartment building didn’t allow dogs. My ex-fiancé’s new apartment didn’t allow dogs either (although I’m not sure he cared).
Here is where my mom comes in. Her and I’ve had a complicated relationship due to her past substance abuse issues and many other things… but she said she wanted to step up and help me. She said she recognized I was going through a hard time having my wedding called off, getting sick, and having to move into an apartment that didn’t allow dogs. So she offered to take care of my dog until I got back up on my feet.
We made a verbal agreement that once I was able to have my dog back, she would give him back to me. Just for context she also lived a 3 hour drive north of me.
Fast forward about 1 year later, I was ready to have my dog back and she refused saying enough time had passed that her house was his home now. I don’t know the extent of what was going on with her and my step dad in terms of substance abuse, but I feel that was also a factor at the time.
I told her over the phone that I was going to drive to her house to pick up my dog and she said she wasn’t going to give him to me. She said a lot of hurtful things during that conversation and at one point put my step dad on the phone, refusing to talk to me anymore, and sitting back while he berated me.
And that’s how my relationship with my mom officially ended and no contact began. To this day, almost 8 years later, she has not once offered to give me my dog back. She betrayed my trust during one of the most vulnerable times of my life and took the one thing that I loved most from me.
Over the past 8 years I’ve mourned the loss of a relationship, the loss of my fully functioning body from chronic illness, the loss of a dog I loved, and the loss of a parent.
tl;dr - I was engaged and got a dog that I absolutely adored with my fiancé. I got sick with a chronic illness and my fiancé called off our wedding and left me. I had to move into an apartment that didn’t allow dogs and my narcissistic, pathological liar mom offered to care for my dog until I got back up on my feet. When I asked for my dog back she refused to give him to me and I haven’t seen her since and have gone no contact.
