2024.05.14 20:16 xampl9 Codes vs Programs

I’ve noticed more people starting to refer to software as “codes”.
I think this is an Indian-English thing, but I’m not sure.
I am sure that I find it annoying.
From HN:
Supercomputer admins would love to have a single code that used the whole machine, both the compute elements and network elements, at close to 100%. In fact they spend a significant fraction on network elements to unblock the compute elements, but few codes are really so light on networking that the program scales to the full core count of the machine.
They even used both terms. Grrr. Pick a side, dammit.

One year of solution architecture schematics🧱
One year ago, I borrowed my wife’s iPad to illustrate a solution architecture idea that I was struggling to communicate using my normal tools. After 400 hrs creating in Procreate, I drew this same concept that got me in to the world of technical software illustration. Day-to-day it’s hard to see growth, so I love visual side by side reminders like this.
Some learnings: - I wasn’t actually that bad at drawing a year ago as that first illustration will try to make you believe 😆. Procreate isn’t* designed for this use case, at least on the surface. Ex: there’s no obvious rule straughtline in the UI. Because it’s such a popular iPad app though, there are niche communities who have built content, brushes, products to support architects in the platform. I’m always finding more resources to help me grow my toolbox. Same goes for Figma if you’re not trying to design an app (like making a zine). Communities mixed with an open platform are incredibly powerful.
  • Vector 🥊 raster for lofi: most architectural and data schematic tooling is vector-based meaning that math (code) is rendering the images. This is awesome for precision plans and tiny details but is actually super confining and sterile when trying to illustrate a concept that’s more inspiration than final product. There’s always a time to move it out of pixels, but I found that I could get further and further with new tools and techniques.
  • If you’re lacking inspiration, use a new container. The blank page is sometimes scary, so I found starting with a new form such as an 8 page zine or a comic strip provides a helpful creative constraint to the work. Either the work evolved in that form or it unblocked me to come back to the original blank page.
  • I’m still looking for the right tool. I’ve tried so many, but I’ve always come back to the universal applicability of Procreate. Here’s why. Most architectural and technical drawing applications were built for desktop computers many years ago, which has led to a few problems. 1) they are designed under the assumption you’re using a large screen, a mouse, and a keyboard to manipulate the interface. These programs are actually referred to as “direct manipulation interface programs” but it’s actually pretty “indirect” from a human-computer interaction perspective. What’s the most direct way to interact with an interface? You’re hands (and by proxy a tool like pencil), which means an iPad + pencil is actually perfect! The problem? 2) The big players like Autodesk and Adobe are incredibly slow to move over to the new platforms and who would blame them: they have locked in big contracts, very expensive licenses, and essentially cornered a market to work with them. Their iPad apps are sorry paired down versions of their desktop siblings and super clunky to the point of being unusable. Then a small development studio out of Tasmania creates natively where the market should be going and only then do the others have to scramble.

Wifi adapter not recognised ubuntu 20.04 intel wifi 6 ax203

Hello everyone, I recently received a gift from my parents. It's the Lenovo ThinkBook 16 G6 IRL. I would like to do some ROS projects on it, but the wifi adapter does not work (Intel WiFi 6 AX203). I tried upgrading to version 22.04, and the wifi adapter worked on it. However, I encountered issues running ROS, so I had to revert back to Ubuntu 20.04.

Here are a few things that I have tried

I haw unable to find any drivers for this specific network card: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005511/wireless.html https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi

None of the below mentioned code snippets worked.

1
``` wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pimlie/ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh/masteubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh chmod a+x ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh sudo ./ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh
2024.05.09 14:48 pinkbutterfly22 Someone please explain to me how can someone that knows nothing about what you’re doing be your manager?
Whenever I had an experienced technical project lead, things have been incredible.
Whenever I’ve had non-technical managers doing their Agile thing, I’ve HATED my life.
Technical leads would jump straight into a problem and either unblock us or understand immediately why things are taking so long or why something can’t be done. They are focused on quality, they care about the software and where it is going. Non-technical managers want things done in X amount of time and you need to explain to them like they’re 5 why it hasn’t been done yet.
How am I supposed to respect someone and essentially report to them when they know nothing about technology?
These are roles to whip the employees to work harder, slaves overlooking other slaves. They’re there to force devs to give themselves deadlines and burn themselves out.
Yes, there are also technical managers who aren’t good managers. Imo you need to be both good at management and good at technology, if you’re good at just one of these, you’re automatically not good enough. Your lack in the other area will show up. The definition of a leader, to me, is someone you look up to, who can do at least everything that you do and more.
This industry is a bit of a joke, not surprised that people can’t take us seriously when we call ourselves “engineers”. It seems like everyone who knows how to send an email and takes one course can come in and start managing projects. No wonder this industry is flooded and sinking.
How to Unblock Downloads in Windows 11
Table of Contents:
When you download a file, Windows often blocks the file or shows a warning to prevent you from harming your PC. The Attachment Manager used for this protection often blocks files that are completely safe, however, so it may be necessary to know how to unblock files on Windows 11 so you can run it uninterrupted.
When Is Windows 11 Blocking Downloads?
Windows 11’s Attachment Manager is designed to protect your computer by applying security measures to files based on their type, the program used for downloading, and your security settings. This system categorizes files into high, moderate, or low risk, but it doesn’t assess the actual safety of individual files. Understanding this mechanism is crucial for discerning which files might be safe to unblock and which should remain restricted for your computer’s safety.
It’s worth noting that Attachment Manager makes no judgment on whether a specific file is safe or has malware. Rather, it applies warnings to all files types that fall into the same category regardless of other factors. This is useful so that you can learn which file types are likely to do the most damage and exercise caution accordingly.
Depending on the risk and file type, you may get different warning messages:
High risk: “Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file”
Factors to Consider When Choosing TheVPN: Reddit (My Honest Review
Y:\Downloads\BatchCompress.com\5_Best_VPNs_According_to_Reddit_My_Honest_Review_for_2024_0004.jpg
When I set out to find the best VPN, I knew I'd to take into account several important factors to make an informed choice. Security features, speed, reliability, cost, device compatibility, and legal considerations all played a part in my review process.
Let's explore how TheVPN stacks up in each of these areas according to Reddit users.
https://preview.redd.it/4fyr14pj2zxc1.jpg?width=1006&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67ce975aea729f155037cb6e19ef261b5310fdca
Security Features Highlight
Delving into the security features, I've found that VPNs not only enhance online privacy but also fortify your digital safety with tools like DNS leak protection and instant kill switches. These features are essential because they prevent your data from being exposed during unexpected disconnects or vulnerabilities.
Additionally, the encryption provided by VPNs masks your IP address and online activities, shielding you from potential cyber threats. What's more, a strict no-logs policy is a game-changer. It means that the VPN doesn't store any details about your internet usage, ensuring your online actions remain private and untraceable.
This thorough approach to security makes VPNs an essential tool for safeguarding your digital life.
Speed and Reliability
Reddit users often stress the importance of a VPN's speed and reliability for a seamless online experience. From personal encounters, it's evident that a VPN that lags or frequently disconnects can be exasperating. Fast connection speeds are crucial for smooth website access and media streaming, reducing buffering frustrations. Moreover, reliability is vital, particularly for activities like online gaming or downloading large files that demand a stable internet connection. Opting for a VPN with a reputation for consistent performance not only protects your online endeavors but also ensures uninterrupted usage. Consequently, I consistently prioritize these aspects when selecting a VPN due to their significant influence on the quality of online interactions.
https://preview.redd.it/awrzb7e94zxc1.jpg?width=1456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7645b2472ca9efa81385dcc29c155809e1fb6c9e
Cost Efficiency Analysis
After considering the importance of speed and reliability, I also assess the cost efficiency of a VPN to make sure I'm getting the best value for my money. Evaluating a VPN's cost involves more than just looking at the price tag. It's about analyzing what I'm getting in return. I check subscription plans, look for discounts, and consider any additional services they might offer. Understanding the pricing structure is key. Does it align with the features provided?
Moreover, considering long-term benefits is essential. Sometimes paying a bit more upfront can save money in the long run if the VPN offers exceptional service and reliability. It's all about the balance between cost and value.
Device Compatibility Check
When selecting a VPN, I always make sure it's compatible with all my devices, from smartphones to laptops. It's essential that the VPN works across Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and even routers.
I check if it allows simultaneous connections on multiple gadgets, which is a necessity for covering all my tech. Also, browser compatibility is vital for seamless browsing, so I guarantee it integrates well with Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.
Dedicated apps for specific devices are a significant benefit, ensuring top performance and ease of use. Finally, I verify the VPN supports various connection protocols to maintain compatibility across different network environments, enhancing flexibility and security.
Legal Considerations Overview
Understanding the legal considerations of using a VPN is vital for guaranteeing compliance with the laws specific to each country. The legality of VPNs varies widely, with some nations having restrictions or outright bans on their use. It's essential for users, like myself, to be aware of these laws to make sure we're using VPNs legally and securely.
For instance, services like NordVPN not only comply with legal regulations but also offer robust security features, enhanced privacy, and faster connection speeds. This makes them a preferred choice for those of us seeking both compliance and performance.
When choosing a VPN, it's not just about unblocking content; it's also about staying on the right side of the law.
https://preview.redd.it/swwhaita4zxc1.jpg?width=1456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e4d9386b0280769c8a0302f4d7f8c90b0f9e3be
Service Accessibility Options
While considering the legal aspects of VPNs, I also evaluated the service accessibility options critical for my online needs. I looked for VPNs that let me connect multiple devices at once. It's essential when I'm juggling between my laptop, phone, and tablet. I also checked if they offer dedicated IP addresses, which enhance both security and privacy.
Moreover, I sought out VPNs with a variety of protocols and strong encryption types to guarantee robust security. A no-logs policy was non-negotiable for protecting my privacy. Features like DNS leak protection and an instant kill switch were also on my checklist, as they prevent accidental exposure of my data during VPN downtime or failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Personally, I found VPN.AC to strike the best balance for most users. Remember, always prioritize what features matter most to you and consider trying a few to find your perfect online privacy partner.
2024.04.30 16:18 Fit-Salamander-3 Metrics to watch for
I am actively attempting to decrease my screen time.
I purchased a BRICK which is a physical object that you scan you phone on and it will block specific apps you choose. Then you walk away from the brick and you can’t unblock anything until you rescan. The concept being you can leave it at home, or in the car so you don’t just deactivate the software from the actual phone.
I also turned off the internet in my home, so that is cutting back on tv watching.
So that’s working, but I am still on my phone a lot.
I was wondering if folks use certain metrics to keep an eye on. I pretty much only look at screentime hours, but I see the number of pickups as a metric and wondering if folks have had much luck with limiting individual pick ups of their phones.
2024.04.29 09:33 SuperSpartan300 Dell released new firmware updates for the GeForce RTX 40XX
I went to Dell's support site and searched for drivers with my service tag but this time, I changed the tab from This Device to simply Alienware m16 to show all the downloads available (should be available for other models too) and it showed me the updates:
See: https://i.postimg.cc/KcnW4kydd.png
Release notes: Dell Technologies recommends applying this update during your next scheduled update cycle. The update contains changes to maintain overall system health. It ensures that the system software remains current and compatible with other system modules (firmware, BIOS, drivers, and software) and may include other new features.
Do not forget to right-click on the file you just downloaded, go to Properties, then check the unblock button at the bottom if it says it was blocked because it came from the internet. If you don't do this, it will lead to erroneous installation as the installer wouldn't have the proper privileges.
2024.04.28 14:14 Dear-Potential2625 My first steps in creating a Chrome Extension , CodeRevX
I work in a full-time 9-5 job.
Since 1 week I've been working on a project to solve one of common issues we are facing. So usually in a software team, every dev aims to complete a number of tickets in a sprint which spans over 2-3 weeks. what I've realized is quite often even when most tickets are completed, they remain stuck in the review queue waiting for a dev to be 'free' to pick up the code reviews.
And this is a big bottleneck in our whole delivery process. Also this has an impact on the test team which needs the tickets reviewed as quickly as possible to start their testing.
In order to improve that process, I thought of creating a chrome extension that would assists devs complete their code reviews by using AI and thus, unblock those tickets and push for testing.
Please do have a look and let me know your thoughts. thanks.
CodeRevX is a chrome extension that offers automated code review capabilities for a wide range of programming languages.
2024.04.27 23:46 bookshelf11 Trying To Grow From Senior To Lead
I'm a senior software engineer trying to grow into a strong lead engineer.
When I'm leading a project, sometimes in standup my colleagues ask me what to do about a particular problem they are facing and I don't always know the answer immediately.
Sometimes escalating *is* appropriate, but I feel like a fundamental role of a lead engineer is being able to unblock their team on most of these types of problems.
For some context, I've been working about 7 years, the first 5 at startups and the last 2 in big tech. I've always had great performance reviews, and my managers have always supported me in getting the work I need to grow.
Do you all have any advice for how to get better at this?
I have a hunch that I could try getting better at first principle reasoning + engineering intuition to fill in my gaps. I'm not sure how to do that either though.
I've read a bunch of the books on becoming a staff engineer, but they don't really address this.
2024.04.27 16:57 Dear-Potential2625 My first steps in creating a Chrome Extension , CodeRevX
I work in a full-time 9-5 job.
Since 1 week I've been working on a project to solve one of common issues we are facing. So usually in a software team, every dev aims to complete a number of tickets in a sprint which spans over 2-3 weeks. what I've realized is quite often even when most tickets are completed, they remain stuck in the review queue waiting for a dev to be 'free' to pick up the code reviews.
And this is a big bottleneck in our whole delivery process. Also this has an impact on the test team which needs the tickets reviewed as quickly as possible to start their testing.
In order to improve that process, I thought of creating a chrome extension that would assists devs complete their code reviews by using AI and thus, unblock those tickets and push for testing.
Please do have a look and let me know your thoughts. thanks.
CodeRevX is a chrome extension that offers automated code review capabilities for a wide range of programming languages.
2024.04.25 16:06 WinbuzzerMaria How to Change or Reset Your Instagram Password
How to Change or Reset Your Instagram Password
Table of Contents:
Instagram is one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, with over one billion monthly active users. With such a large user base, Instagram also attracts hackers and cybercriminals who may try to access your account and misuse your personal information. That’s why changing your password on Instagram might be necessary for your online security and privacy.
When and How Often Should You Change Your Instagram Password
There is no definitive answer to how often you should change your password on Instagram, but some experts recommend doing it at least once every six months. This can help prevent hackers from guessing or cracking your password, especially if you use the same or similar passwords for other online accounts, which should be avoided. You should also change your password immediately if you notice any suspicious activity on your account, such as posts or messages that you did not create or send or if you receive an email from Instagram asking you to reset your password.
What to Consider When Choosing a New Instagram Password
When choosing a new Instagram password, you should consider some best practices that can help you create a strong and secure password. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
  • Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using frequently used words, phrases, names, dates, or personal information that hackers or their automatic tools can easily guess.
  • Make your password at least eight characters long. The longer your password is, the harder it is to crack by brute force attacks.
  • Do not reuse passwords for different online accounts. If one of your accounts gets compromised, hackers may try to use the same password to access your other accounts.
  • Use a password manager to store and generate passwords for you. A password manager is software that securely saves and fills in passwords for you across different websites and apps. It can also create random and complex passwords for you that are hard to remember but easy to use.
2024.04.18 21:25 easyaction ty r/baking, i got my first baking job!
feeling over the moon :) context - my education and professional experience are all in software. i entered funemployment last month and digitally reached out to a handful of local bakeries with a CV that basically says "i'm on indefinite pause from tech, but look, i can bake and i want to train with you."
two weeks of silence went by before i followed up with the bakery i was most interested in (founded by chefs with michelin-star backgrounds!) and a couple more days later they actually responded inviting me to stage. cue me scouring this subreddit looking up what a stage was and panicking when i realized it's often a full-on shift lol. anyway the stage took place yesterday, and they're giving me the green light.
most of this is confirming what was said in past posts, but here's what came in handy for me:
noob mistakes i don't want to repeat or things i'd do differently:
that's all for now. thank you to this sub for all the tips about staging and also being my go-to info hub any time i'm baking
edits: minor typo corrections
2024.04.18 03:28 8thsense Looking for some feedback on this project
Hey folks! I wanted to get your take on a project a friend and I are building. I've posted it in 2 other subs, and people have signed up for the waitlist (which I do appreciate!), but I'm looking for feedback and discussion around what y'all think. Would you want something like this? Is it close to something you'd want, just missing something? Is it the worst idea you've ever heard? I'd love to know!
The story/problem:
A friend and I were laid off from our software jobs a few months ago. We caught up about a month after getting laid off and both reflected on how hard it was to stay focused on projects we set out to do ourselves. Outside of prepping for interviews and applying for new jobs, we seemed to both have the issue of making and organizing agendas that stuck. A big issue we both had was checking email endlessly for any responses to applications they'd sent out...
I started using an app-blocking app that helped keep the distractions at bay, and it worked really well. The big issue I had was: I ran into certain tasks that required an app that I had blocked (mostly LinkedIn).
The solution:
My friend suggested building an app that used app-blocking focused on task completion, rather than a set time for those apps to be blocked (which is the function all these app-blocking/focus apps use). That way, when you have a task you want to complete like: "Check email for responses", you can set your email to blocked while you complete other tasks, then when you get to the email checking task, you'd have set the email app you use as necessary for that task and it would be unblocked until you completed that task.
The app we've built so far offers a lot of flexibility in the way apps are blocked and unblocked, task organization, and we're currently working on the AI integration to help organize the tasks without a lot of the mental overhead.
We've put out a simple waitlist page together at https://www.focalios.com and would love some feedback on whether you think this is worth pursuing.
As a side note, I have used quite a few of the todo apps out there and they have helped, but I have yet to find one without enough friction to make me want to try a different one. If you have recommendations on ones that work for you, let me know! I'd love to try them out.
Cheers y'all
2024.04.17 23:18 HiramAbiffIsMyHomie Dumbest install process I think I have ever seen
.appinstaller extension won't open.
You tell us to download a weird "msixbundle" package.
that's not going to install either
nowhere do you tell us we need this: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9NBLGGH4NNS1?ocid=pdpshare
I've been using the search engine and extensions lately but this turns me off on your brand completely.
No standalone installers is a major turnoff anyway.
Windows Store, doubly so.
I dunno. Just seems like this is an old problem you're not really paying any attention to, duckduckgo
Makes me wonder why I should trust you. Probably shouldn't.
Edit: after I installed the "AppInstaller" from the Microsoft Store, I can open the msixbundle. But, I wanted to see if the .appinstaller install was smaller that ~900mb. So I click the "DuckDuckGo.appinstaller" file which I can now open. I get "Error in parsing the app package." I mean, I'm just kind of flabbergasted really. I don't pull that word out often. I am almost speechless. Not even trying to be funny. Just wonder who is asleep at the wheel over there. None of the work anyone does matters if people don't install your software. You would think people would want to make that the absolutely easiest and foolproof thing to do. Sheesh.
EDIT: Okay I got a little spirited in my criticism but I was exasperated. The issue was I am running Windows 10 iot LTSC and you have to install the MS Store manually. I don't like app stores and only use them when forced. So I had to 1) install the MS Store app called AppInstaller. It may not come up on the Store when you search! Didn't for me! I stumbled on it web searching. 2) I had to unblock a few things on my firewall as I do a whitelist-only firewall setup.
I still am turned off by the forced use of the MS Store and lack of other installers. Lack of extensions may prove to be a dealbreaker for me as well. I am willing to test it though, I've liked having DDG on my phone which I started testing this week with its tracking protection. I am willing to give things a chance, good luck to all the devs who work hard and let's get some good ideas to the top!
