There have been a few posts lately talking about goths and I wanted to share what actual goth is/was for our generation. This isn't me gatekeeping- this is me trying to share something I love with people who may not have been exposed to it or have misconceptions.
I'd start with what goth isn't (or wasn't)- it wasn't Marilyn Manson. I think this is the biggest misconception about goths. The first thing someone might say if I told them I was a goth in the 90s would be, "Oh like Marilyn Manson." Well yes and no. Goths listened to a lot of industrial music too, but that isn't goth music. Same with NIN, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, etc. I love those bands but they're not technically goth.
It's also not symphonic metal (Nightwish, Theatre of Tragedy, Tristania, Within Temptation). Again, some goths might ALSO like those bands but that's it's own thing.
It's absolutely, positively NOT EMO. I can't stress this enough. The only thing goth has in common with emo is a flair for the dramatic. It's also not Evanescence. Wearing dark clothes and heavy eye makeup doesn't make you goth. Otherwise KISS and Stevie Nicks could be considered goth.
So what IS goth? It's a genre of music that came after the punk scene and originated with bands like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, etc. A lot of these bands moved away from this original goth sound.
By the time our generation had taken up goth we were in the early to mid 90s we were in the 2nd and 3rd wave of goth. These were bands like Fields of the Nephilim, Rosetta Stone, London After Midnight, The Shroud, Switchblade Symphony, Diva Destruction, and a ton more. It was a big thriving scene that still continues.
So how many of you were goths in the 90s? What do you remember about the scene and what were you listening to? What clubs did you go to? I went to Numbers in Houston and The Atomic Cafe in Austin. I'd really like to hear from other people who were into this stuff at the time and still are. What are you listening to now? New bands I really like are Hante., Night Sins, Twin Tribes, She Past Away, Boy Harsher, Ritual Howls, and way more than I can list off here.

Feelings na often attributed to conservative Cathollic beliefs and/or upbringing rather than actual knowledge backed by statistics and studies. With all things considered, the gender dichotomy has been enforced by modern religions but throughout cultures and history, this is not the case. So please, don't wonder bakit diverse ang gender identities ngayon because even historically, ganiyan na talaga ang mga tao. Here's a list of cultures that have documented distinct diversity in gender expressions. Even the Philippines has a historical "third gender" - the Babaylan.
With regards to LGBTQIA+ people and rights, people often use cases of people under the umbrella and abuse e.g. Awra and many other cases of LGBTQIA+ folk using their diversity as an "excuse". These people should rightly be condemned for their wrongdoings. However, hindi ito excuse to say na whatever protection against gender-based issues can be abused. Many queer folk still experience maltreatment in many ways, even in the Philippines which is said to be tolerant. Their SOGIE isn't the issue here, it's their behavior. Grabe yung mga tao na makasabi na nagiging privileged ang mga queer people as though cis het (note: this means cis gender [meaning their assigned gender at birth is the same as their gender identity] and heterosexual) do not enjoy many privileges just for being part of the hegemony aka "typical". Andaming nagbe-benefit sa privileges pero di sila aware, pero kapag humihingi yung oppressed ng better rights to gain better equality, grabe maka contra.
All-in-all, anlakas ng boses ng mga tao na limited lang naman talaga ang kaalaman pagdating sa gender pero grabe makapuna.

Earlier today, prosecutors announced that they have identified 71-year-old Stephen Paul Gale as a suspect in the rapes of two women that occurred at a clothing store in Framingham, Massachusetts, shortly after Christmas 1989. Gale has been indicted on four counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping, and one count of robbery. However, no one knows where he is.
This case was previously profiled on "Unsolved Mysteries" in 1990. The rapes occurred on the morning of December 27, 1989, at a women's clothing store in a shopping mall along Route 9 in Framingham. Edit: The U.S. Marshal's is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to Gale's arrest. He reportedly has ties to organized crime. He is described as 5'11" tall and about 200 pounds.
