ESCANABA — Swearing in ceremonies for the winners of the Delta County Board of Commissioners recall election held last week and a reorganizational meeting that was planned for Wednesday were scrapped Tuesday evening, after the Delta County Board of Canvassers failed to certify the election results.
“They’re basing their decision on the ratio of the votes, because two of (the races) have the exact same ratio and the third one was a similar ratio, so they think that that shows that the machines were somehow programmed with (an) algorithm,” said Delta County Clerk Nancy Przewrocki.
The results of the May 7 election were unusually consistent, with challengers Kelli Van Ginhoven and Matt Jensen each receiving 72% of the vote in their respective races, to incumbent commissioners Dave Moyle’s and Bob Petersen’s 27%. In the race between challenger Myra Croasdell and Incumbent Commissioner Bob Barron, the percentages were 73% and 26%, respectively.
Such results are atypical across races in elections for a number of reasons, including differences between the candidates, population density, and the cultural factors that make people choose to live in more- or less-populated areas.
But just because the results were unusual doesn’t mean they were wrong.
“I tried to tell them that the machines have been tested and the results came out exactly as they should. I have every confidence in our voting equipment because it’s always tested and in the recounts and the audits we have done, the ballot hand count has always come out exactly very close to … the tabulator results,” said Przewrocki.
It is also not the place of the board of canvassers to take results into account when deciding to certify the election. They serve a more administrative role, doing things like comparing the precinct poll books to reports from the precincts to look for internal consistency in the number of votes cast. According to Przewrocki, there were no inconsistencies that would warrant the election not being certified.
That didn’t stop two Republican canvassers from voting against the certification Tuesday. Bonnie Hakkola, who also serves as the local Republican party chair, and LeeAnne Oman, an alternate canvasser who also serves as the local Republican party secretary, both voted not to certify — splitting the board of canvassers 2-2 and blocking the certification.
A second meeting of the board of canvassers has been set for Monday at 9 a.m. It is possible that Oman would not participate in that hearing if Sema Deeds — the Republican canvasser Oman replaced Tuesday — is present. Deeds was unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting due to illness.
It is unlikely that Hakkola’s vote will change. A press release dated Monday but sent to the Daily Press late Tuesday by her son, Seth Hakkola, indicates local citizens working with members of Michigan-based groups that deny the validity of the 2020 presidential election have “identified certain statistical anomalies and suspicious voting ratios.”
Specifically, the release references local citizens working with Joanna Bakale, a prominent member of the Election Integrity Force, who is perhaps best known for advising poll watchers to call 911 if they see suspicious activity around voting machines in 2022; Citizens for Electoral Justice member Scott Aughney, a self-described “independent election investigator and whistleblower” who attempted to obtain a copy of Escanaba’s electronic poll book raw data file through a failed Freedom of Information Act request last year; and Former Republican State Senator Patrick Colbeck, of Michigan’s 7th District.
The release states the local citizens are “formally requesting a hand recount and forensic audit of the results.” According to Przewrocki, Hakkola had also requested a hand recount, but the board of canvassers is not authorized by law to conduct recounts as part of the certification process.
“I would love to do a hand count just to show them that there is absolutely nothing wrong with our tabulators,” said Przewrocki.
A recount of the ballots could still take place, but only after the election is certified. If it were to happen, it would have to be at the request of one of the candidates.
Technically speaking, Moyle, Petersen and Barron still serve as the county’s commissioners until their replacements can be put in place. If the election is not certified Monday, those board members would have to vote whether or not to hold the regularly scheduled meeting slated for Tuesday.
However, if the election is not certified Monday, there could be bigger issues. The certification process would be taken over by the State Board of Canvassers, which means Przewrocki and other local clerks would have to travel downstate with the ballots, election machines, poll books, and all other necessary documents and equipment to certify the election.
“Everything that we would have at our fingertips doing it here locally, we would have to bring downstate with us in case there needs to be a retabulation,” said Przewrocki.
The cost of the canvassing would also fall on the county.
Until the certification, Van Ginhoven, Croasdell, and Jensen cannot be sworn in and a reorganizational meeting cannot be held. Jensen and Croasdell were expected to be sworn in Wednesday morning and Van Ginhoven was slated to be sworn in Monday, but all three ceremonies have been postponed. A reorganizational meeting also set for Wednesday was postponed, pending the certification.

So I got pulled over and the driver took off running and I had a warrant so I use my sister's name and they searched the car and my bags and find some speed & some Xanax, the xanax were on me so i claimed them. Later they called me during which they told me that I claimed the Xanax is but not the dope so they only have one count one they charge my sister with possession of control substance because she had a warrant in a different county a couple hours away for a DWI. Well after they arrest me they try and get me to work for them as an informant to make my charges go away. I agreed to and lead them to think i would contact them and stuff, and iu never did so they stuck me with the charges. However turrns out they did not submit the pills into evidence because they left them in the car i know because i took them after getting released , so they dont have anything on me except imporsonating my twin sister. We are both stressed out wondering how it will play out , would like to hear your opinion on how you think it will play out in court and if you think i should be worried. TIA

- In May 2023, I signed a year lease in a building with about a dozen units owned by a retiree.
- The basement unit flooded twice in June. The property manager made some amends/repairs. I didn't want to move out at that time because I believed the issue was resolved.
- After the tenant above me moved out, the property manager and handyman proceeded to gut the apartment over my head, running power tools late into the night and on weekends for the whole month of November, even after I asked them not to. This was a noise code violation. Because the only way to make an official record of this was to call the police, I decided not to (as a single woman living alone, I didn't want to escalate the situation).
- I was ready to leave after the two floods and the noise. I went into a deep rabbithole doing legal research on the many numerous building and fire code issues in my unit. One of my findings was that my unit had *NEVER* received a certificate of occupancy from the borough, which I take to mean I had been living in an illegal basement conversion that was deceptively passed off to me as a habitable living space.
- In December, the unit flooded again! This time I called the borough's code enforcement department. One of the inspectors came over the same day and later filed a report with a short paragraph on the inspection and the photos he took. He told me he never would have passed the unit.
- I moved out at the end of December and now live about an hour away.
- Here's where I might have fucked up: when I left, the property manager sent me an email stating I wouldn't be getting my security deposit back. I never formally asked for the deposit back. I was extremely overwhelmed by dealing with all the issues, moving twice in seven months, a demanding corporate job, and everything else.
- In April, I sent the landlord a certified demand letter to his personal address asking for the ~$1,500 deposit back. He never responded but I have the return receipt he signed.
- Knowing the upper limit for small claims court is $6,000, and I am out $1,500 (security deposit) + $1500 (moving expenses) + $7,000 in rent for an "apartment" whose landlord breached the warrant of habitability and covenant of quiet enjoyment, can I ask for the full $6,000 if I file in May after moving out on December 31?

She used to live in Montgomery County, she now lives with me in Clermont county.
We have spoken to several lawyers with different information - for example one lawyer says the case can happen in Montgomery County, another says the judge might dismiss the case and move it to Clermont, where we live now.
Can we keep the case in Montgomery county? As she still works there and that would be easier for her.
The next question is, if there's even a chance of it moving against our wishes, can we do that part WITHOUT a lawyer then just find a lawyer for Clermont county?
We've had 0 luck finding a lawyer to service both counties, and we don't want to pay 2 different lawyers on the same case. If that makes sense.

Rudy Giuliani's legal problems could be about to get worse, a former U.S. attorney has said.
Giuliani was one of 18 people indicted last month in Arizona over an alleged scheme to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. He was served the indictment alongside six Trump allies, including Trump's former and his close adviser Boris Epshteyn, as well as 11 individuals who acted as fake GOP electors for Arizona in the last presidential election.
However, Giuliani is the only defendant prosecutors have been unable to serve with a summons, according to Richie Taylor, a spokesperson for the Arizona attorney general's office.
Taylor said prosecutors and investigators working for Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes have made multiple attempts to serve Giuliani a summons, which serves as a formal notice that he has been criminally charged and must appear before a judge at Maricopa County Superior Court on May 21. However, they have been unable to find him. He added that the day after the state-level grand jury handed up its indictment to Giuliani, two agents for the attorney general's office traveled to New York City with plans to hand-deliver the notice to him.
The agents determined that Giuliani was in his New York apartment because he had recently video streamed from his residence, Taylor continued, adding that upon their arrival, they were told by a person at the front desk that they were not allowed to accept service of the documents. - The GOP made no such self-defeating fumbles on Tuesday. West Virginian Republicans nominated Governor Jim Justice (R-WV) to flip the seat of departing Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV). In Maryland, they picked former Governor Larry Hogan, who will face off against Democrat Angela Alsobrooks, a county executive of Prince George’s County. Hogan is pretty well-liked among moderate voters in this blue state, making him a tough matchup for Alsobrooks, who is looking to become Maryland’s first-ever Black female senator. Dems are defending a wafer-thin 51-49 majority, and will likely have to hold Maryland in a tough fight to stay in power. And it matters who runs the Senate, especially for future Supreme Court vacancies. Things may be turning around for Money Mitch.
- Disgraced former President Donald Trump, however, didn’t have such a great night. He just can’t seem to outrun Nikki Haley’s zombie presidential campaign, which brought in 20 percent of the vote in Maryland and almost that much in Nebraska.
