2024.05.15 15:24 Babushkat1985 Lurker turned poster-Oldest daughter

Hi everyone!
I`ve been lurking here for a bit and I figure, now is my time to shine! šŸ˜…šŸ˜ First of all, I`m nearly 40 and I have only recently learned of the language to describe my upbringing and my relationship with my mother. Has this happened to anyone else? I thought my parents just sucked. I had no idea I was being parentified, gaslit and taken advantage of(and still am by my mother).
Little background: I`m the eldest child in my family. My brother is 5 years my junior. My parents married young (17&19) and my mom divorced my dad when I was 12. Also note: I grew up in a Hispanic American household, which added to the situation for me, as if you know, the sons in these households are often doted upon and the daughters are second class citizens who at the same time get dumped with a lot of responsibility.
Before my parents divorce, my mom confided in me at about age 10-12 about her marriage with my dad, how she wanted to leave, abuse, etc.(then after the divorce confided in my about her dating life, abortion, other personal matters). I encouraged her to divorce him and she eventually did. These days she says that none of that ever happened, that she credits her divorce to her male friends at the time(oh yeah, my mother is a lowkey misogynist). Ever since the divorce, I`ve had to sort out my mom's finances because she is irresponsible(bankruptcy, prone to overspending, prone to being scammed). She has borrowed money from me since I started working at 15. I made the mistake of one time co-signing for her on a purchase and had to end up paying for it all to avoid messing up my credit because she refused to pay.
I moved away when I was 24 and was away from my mom for 13 years, during which time she still borrowed money, came to me with her problems, asked me to do things for her, stressed me out by trying to figure out her life from another state. I recently moved back after going through my own divorce and living with her has been a big challenge. I`m hoping to move out sooner rather than later(getting my life together to leave a very expensive California), but in the interim, it is very frustrating. Today I feel like I`m on the verge of tears still having to be the parent in this relationship. I still have to handle events that she cannot herself, read paperwork, make sure she isn`t getting herself into deeper issues with her finances. All of this while trying to remain calm while I deal with her because she gaslights me and makes me feel like I`m the one with the bad attitude. I have to speak to her gently and like a child so that she doesn't get upset.
Anyway. Sorry for the rant. I wanted to come here to vent and also connect with people who understand. At this point, I know it will never change. I have accepted that. My goal is to move on with my life and help when I can but not overextend myself when I move out. It's unfortunate that I didn`t get parents who were reliable(haven't spoken to my dad in about 15 years. That is its own bullshittery). The end.
Thanks for reading.

What was happening with computers and automation around the time this episode originally aired:
In 1960 a science technology TV program aired an episode titled "The Thinking Machine". Here's a 3-minute video excerpt from the hour-long program
The science technology episode of 'Tomorrow', coordinated with M.I.T., aired on CBS in early 1961. The full show can be viewed on YouTube for free running 53-minutes
From Forbes magazine July 18, 2019:
By 1958, the nation had entered the ā€œAutomation Depressionā€ in which ā€œwe are stumbling blindly into the automation era with no concept or plan to reconcile the need of workers for income and the need of business for cost-cutting and worker-displacing innovations.ā€
Four years later, President Kennedy was asked in a news conference ā€œMr. President, our Labor Department estimates that approximately 1.8 million persons holding jobs are replaced every year by machines. How urgent do you view this problemā€“automation?ā€ Kennedyā€™s response? That ā€œit is a fact that we have to find, over a ten-year period, 25,000 new jobs every week to take care of those who are displaced by machines, and those who are coming into the labor market ā€¦ in particular industries we might get special structural unemployment. We have seen that in steel, we have seen it in coal, we may see it in other industries ā€¦ I regard it as the major domestic challenge, really, of the ā€˜60s, to maintain full employment at a time when automation, of course, is replacing men.ā€
Richard Deacon was born May, 14, 1921 in Philadelphia. When he was 11, he was afflicted with polio and later took up dancing to help strengthen his legs. In his teens, the Deacon family moved to Binghamton, New York. Richard Deacon was actually a classmate of Rod Serling. Largely due to his early polio scare, Deacon became an intern during high school at Binghamton General Hospital and later served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II.

Richard Deacon was typecast as a middle management authority who rarely received respect from either end of the employment spectrum. Two words that adequately describes the frequent acting persona: prissy milksop. Deacon's two longest and most notable TV roles ā€“ as Lumpyā€™s dad on ā€œLeave It to Beaverā€ (1951-1963) and Mel Cooley on ā€œThe Dick Van Dykeā€ show (1961-66) ā€“ overlapped by two years.

2024.05.15 10:03 DiagonalBuzz AIO about my long distance BF keeping me a secret?

TL;DR: Boyfriend (33M) of 5 months seems to be dishonest or keeping me (27F) a secret. Changed phone background to pic of me with him when with me, then when weā€™re apart, changes his background to something else.
I started dating a guy 5 months ago and we shortly went long distance after I got relocated to Texas for my new job. The plan was to work in Texas temporarily and try to move back after 1-2 years of experience but the plan has slowly changed, he told me he plans to move to Texas by the end of this year to be with me, because his work gave him the opportunity to relocate.
I have been selectively single for a while because I was remotely working and traveling; moving around a lot has made it hard to settle in one spot. But for the first time after meeting him, I wanted to settle in one spot.
Our relationship has been 4 months in person and 3 long distance now (talked for 2 months before dating). He seems like a genuine guy and checks all the boxes for me, He (White American) is learning Mandarin because he knows how important my culture is to me. He randomly decided on his own this year he was learning Mandarin. I told him he didnā€™t need to, and that I would still have the same feelings for him, but he thinks that learning my language will bring him closer to me and my culture.
Here is why Iā€™m having mixed feelings; we had each other as each otherā€™s phone backgrounds. When he came to visit me last month, I saw that his phone background had changed to some mountain landscape. He didnā€™t notice that I had seen the phone background change. The next morning, when I was grabbing his phone to turn off the alarm he had, he snatched the phone quickly and turned off the alarm. I went to shower and when I came out, he was showing something on his phone to me and I saw he changed it to a picture of us. But today we were webcamming (3 weeks after he visited) and he picked up his phone and I saw it had changed to a black background.
While yes, I was disappointed when I saw the mountain background initially, I didnā€™t care if he didnā€™t want a picture of me on his phone background. What seemed sketchy was he changed it the next morning. I didnā€™t make a big deal of it because it had been 3 weeks since we had seen each other and I didnā€™t want to spoil the fun of him visiting for the weekend. It was his birthday and I bought him a plane ticket and planned a surprise party for him.
Seeing that heā€™s back in the bay and changed his phone background back just seemed sketchy. Am I overreacting for thinking he is keeping me a secret or something? He introduced me to his grandma who is closest to him, spends his energy learning my culture, and his weekends on the phone with meā€¦ but something about this seems off to me.
He has never mentioned me in any work conversation- seems like workers donā€™t know about me. When I told him I wanted to come to his work and work remote from the cafe at his office (when I was still in California), he told me it would be boring and noisy. We donā€™t have each other on any social media either so I donā€™t really know what heā€™s up to. He tells me he has no friends and doesnā€™t text anyone which is a bit hard to believe. On top of that, in the past he would disappear for a few hours and not text until I mentioned I would like a text at least every 4 hours. Am I overthinking this? He has all the green flag energy, but changing the phone backgrounds seemed a bit dishonest. I wouldnā€™t have cared if he didnā€™t want me on his Home Screen, but why change it when Iā€™m not looking? If heā€™s talking to someone else or keeping me a secret, why waste his energy learning Mandarin and why spend his weekends on the phone with me? The long distance + fresh relationship makes it hard for me to now trust him.. but he also seemed sincere about how he would make the move to be closer to me at the end of this year.

2024.05.15 07:36 collegethrwawayacc UW or JHU (accepted to both, making a decision)

Hi! I'm the bf of a gf who's been accepted to both JHU and UW Seattle for mech engineering. I'm super proud of her, and we've been weighing the pros/cons of going to each school, but it's been super difficult to decide. We're both from WA (I've also been accepted to UW Seattle for CS), so she'd be a in-state student. She's committed to JHU (just because the deadline is earlier than UW's, and she's heavily considering JHU), but still thinks about UW as an option. Some background, she's worked really hard in HS, taking on a contractor job at Boeing, has done a Museum of Flight program, done a bunch of 3D modeling/printing work. She's always been a learner, trying to learn more and doesn't want to stop learning. So that's where the line comes with UW and JHU. Here's what we have so far:
UW: - "meh" mech engineering program, she's heard that it's mostly theoretical (just design practice), less hands-on - unable to double major - about 15k a year, would commute for at least first year, considering other options in seattle after - grand total, 60k undergrad, 40k masters (?) = 100k for 6 years-ish
JHU: - 2nd in the country biomedical engineering (she is interested in that, along with mech) things like bionics is something she finds really interesting
I'm excluding the "we're gonna miss each other" part, but I want her to put her education and her aspirations before me.
From the start, she's liked both schools, as they both seem like really really good opportunities. Oh and also - her parents are willing to contribute about 10k per year to UW, and will probably do slightly more for JHU. Not covering all though, because 89k is a lot. She'd have to take out loans.
At this point, it's really about the cost, and the reward. Is the 89k a year worth it? She's also considered that at UW, she'll make it out of undergrad pretty much debt free, while saving up more during that time. NO financial aid from either school.
She's mostly scared that she's gonna miss out on a huge opportunity. So.. any advice, or has anyone gone through either of the programs?
Also - if this means anything as to what she can do, she got waitlisted at caltech. She didn't really apply to any of the Ivys, because she thought they were out of reach, and JHU was just one that she shot off an application to last second, just for the fun of it. She does regret not applying to other schools now, but that's a different occasion.

2024.05.15 05:49 xzkandykane How do you find the standard adjustments when doing comparable properties?

I'm back with another homework question!! My semester project is to do an appraisal. However, we're not even given a grading rubric so I don't know how much accuracy counts! In the book he has us read, it mentions a "local cost handbook" for physical features like fire places, solar panels.
I found this https://www.boe.ca.gov/proptaxes/pdf/ah53122.pdf, (California) Assessor's Handbook, Residential Building Costs. Is that something that is usable, or do I try to find market research in how much building features costs? Or is this type of adjustment more "judgement"?
Also on building depreciation adjustments, is there a standardized %, like in accounting? Or can I use accounting standards?
Lastly, there are adjustments for financing information. In my county, that is not a recordable/public document except if there is a deed of trust filed. How do I find information such as points? I do see on Zillow that I can see closing costs.

2024.05.15 02:48 Influxlve IHSS meeting interview

Tomorrow we have our first IHSS meeting to determine whether or not we qualify. My wife and I were wondering what exactly are they going to be looking for and how itā€™s going to go we heard itā€™s two hours. Iā€™ve searched this subreddit for more info just looking to gain a little more.
Background.
Our son is 6 years-old non-verbal but can say a lot of things. He doesnā€™t directly respond to things we ask him right away. He isnā€™t potty trained yet still working on that. He has ABA and speech therapy. He doesnā€™t really have any sense of danger loves to jump off the bed and jumps on the bed like itā€™s a trampoline. Heā€™s starting to elope a little and if we were to cross the streets he wouldnā€™t know any sense of danger like that as well. He still gets spoon fed. He can eat fruit and other foods on his own but he gets super messy and doesnā€™t understand what dirty is.
For those of you in California or have IHSS in the U.S. would love to hear some input and thoughts.
Thank you.

2024.05.15 00:17 PyroIsSpai Are UFOs impacted by energies and gravitational anomalies generated by fault lines? A few new clues and questions from a claimed UFO Program leaker on a similar subreddit.

0. High level summary

I propose that fault lines may play a significant and under documented role in what is happening with UFOs and specifically the impact of fault lines on some number of UFO related crashes. I suspect energetic effects from fault lines and gravity effects from mass variances in fault lines (especially while active) impact UFO/NHI navigational systems. They may do things like routing around, or via, fault lines.

1. A new leaker: Dijkstra's algorithm and Diablo Canyon.

On May 13th, 2024, a claimed leaker on UFO/NHI related programs posted on /Aliens with details on their history with the "Program".
It's a huge volume of data but one very particular passage instantly stuck out to me:
"The craft use a system that originally befuddled generations of researchers, but it's essentially a 3D dijkstra algorithm. It finds points around the craft, and chooses the most efficient possible route through space time to get to that point. Some of the parameters it uses to gauge efficiency are totally unknown to us and are a serious point of contention. It's not autonomy, but rather obstacle avoidance not unlike what you would see in a self-driving car. But, the self driving car could go through air, space and water without worrying about what medium its in. Additionally, the algo accounts for the crafts place in time."
And then this surprising sentence shortly after:
"Although the algo is extremely effective, Nuclear explosions and experiments somehow interfere with this navigation. Craft particularly avoid Diablo Canyon, even if we put something they really want there."
So, this Dijkstra's algorithm and Diablo Canyon.
I can find not one single prior reference to this anywhere, ever, in all of Ufology prior to that Reddit post.
I think this is entirely new, or new to the Internet for UFO topics.
In a 3D version of Dijkstra's algorithm, the algorithm extends from two-dimensional plane navigation to three-dimensional environments, making it suitable for applications such as drone flight paths, underwater vehicle navigation, or spacecraft trajectory planning. The algorithm begins at a starting node, exploring all neighboring nodes and continuously updating the shortest known distances from the start to each node, considering all possible paths. By repeating this process until the destination node is reached, the algorithm ensures that the path with the minimal total distance or cost is selected, taking into account the complexities of moving through 3D space. So, we have the introduction of a known means of navigation, that does 4D (by inclusion of a temporal parameter) mapping in this model.
Then we have the inclusion of Diablo Canyon -- but there are six of these in North America. Three of these are very close to government sites.
Which could the leaker be talking about? And why is it interesting in the context of UFOs?
Why would a UFO avoid a canyon?

2. Energy fields, UFO navigation and "fault lines" in gravity.

There are numerous reports and stories of things like claimed lasers, directed energy weapons/fields, and even allegedly things like RADAR having some manner of detectable impact on navigational capabilities of UFOs/NHI craft. The lore is full of this topic over time, and it aligns substantially with the scientific backgrounds of people known to be involved, like Sean M. Kirkpatrick.
This caught my eye as I've been doing a lot of reading on certain much lesser-known effects of fault lines, after I learned that the home and neighborhood I lived in as a child, where a group of us saw a "saucer", was literally sat atop a small land mass completely encircled like an island by fault lines. This is not unique--there are others. But this was a wild surprise to me, and especially when the flight path of the ship we saw... once I saw the fault lines path/heading...
It was the same route. The thing we saw, once I saw the fault line maps... it was like looking at a snippet of a Google Maps route that the UFO took, for the duration of our experience seeing it. I did not know this for decades.
For the curious, the bread crumb that led down this path was not this whistleblower, fault lines, or my own experience. It was studying Lagrange Points.
What's a Lagrange point?
Positions in space where the gravitational forces of two large bodies, like Earth and the Moon, balance out the centripetal force felt by a smaller object, allowing it to remain in a stable position relative to the two larger bodies. Think of it like the mid-way point between any two bodies with mass that impact gravity. Earth/Jupiter. JupiteSun. Earth moon/Neptune. You/your cat. It's not a 50/50 thing; if you are and your cat are 10 feet away, it's not 5-foot between you. It's also impacted by gravity from other bodies within range (and range is infinite because gravity is, no matter how infinitesimal at long distances).
There is even conceptually such a place, even if it's trivial in variation, between galaxies.
Keep in mind: there are specifically named 3D mapped always-moving (as Earth/moon for example) always-in-motion Lagrange points for the Earth and Moon. Five total--but those are just the optimal ones. There would be a relative band of space where overall the gravity between bodies is more balanced.
Almost like a fault line in gravity, huh?
That, the fault line discovery related to my experience, and my (then) unrelated fault line research which was pure curiosity unrelated to UFOs... at first.

3. Piezoelectrics, Electrokinetics, and Gravitational anomalies.

So we have a new claimed 4D mapping/navigational tool by NHI UFOs, and that they go out of their way to avoid some "Diablo canyon" no matter what we do. We know definitively there are places where gravity can have relative weak spots, due to the balancing of gravitational waves/forces/mass between bodies. All bodies with mass produce gravity... including tectonic plates.
But that's not all they produce in terms of energy.
Fault lines can generate three different distinct effects beyond seismic (shaking/motion) impacts on the world.
They are:
Stress-induced Piezoelectric Effects
Stress-induced piezoelectric effects refer to the generation of electrical charges in certain crystalline materials, such as quartz, when mechanical stress is applied. These effects are caused by tectonic stress and strain in the Earth's crust, which deforms the crystalline structures, generating electric fields. At the surface, these effects can disrupt local power grids, cause voltage fluctuations, and affect sensitive electronic equipment. In the atmosphere, piezoelectric effects can lead to changes in the ionosphere, affecting radio signal propagation and GPS accuracy up to altitudes of around 600 km. In space, the impacts are typically observed as changes in ionospheric electron density, detected by satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), such as those at altitudes up to 1,200 km.

Electrokinetic Effects
Electrokinetic effects are electrical phenomena that occur when a fluid (such as groundwater) moves through a porous medium (like soil or rock) under the influence of a pressure gradient. These effects are caused by the movement of ionized fluids through the Earth's subsurface, which can be influenced by tectonic activity, fluid injection, or natural fluid migration. At the surface, electrokinetic effects can alter groundwater flow, impact water supply systems, and cause electrical disturbances in subsurface sensors. In the atmosphere, these effects are less direct but can influence humidity and ionization levels, which may affect weather radar and communication systems. In space, electrokinetic effects are typically not directly observed; however, related ionospheric disturbances from fluid movement in the Earth's crust can be detected by satellites at altitudes up to 1,200 km.

  2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrokinetic_phenomena
Gravity Anomalies
Gravity anomalies are variations in the Earth's gravitational field caused by differences in the distribution of mass within the Earth. These anomalies are caused by subsurface geological structures such as mountains, valleys, fault lines, and varying rock densities. On the surface, gravity anomalies can affect precise geodetic measurements, influence surveying accuracy, and impact construction projects that rely on gravitational data. In the atmosphere, gravity anomalies can slightly influence the flight paths of aircraft and atmospheric satellites, but these effects are generally minimal. In space, gravity anomalies are detected by satellites like the GRACE mission at altitudes of around 500 km, affecting satellite orbit calculations and providing data on Earth's subsurface structures and water distribution.

4. The impact of fault lines on UFOs.

Disturbances related to stress-induced piezoelectric effects, electrokinetic effects, and gravity anomalies have been observed and recorded at various altitudes. Here are some notable examples across different categories:
A) Stress-induced Piezoelectric Effects
  • High-altitude Observations: Piezoelectric effects typically influence ground-based systems such as power grids and sensors. There is limited data on their direct impact at high altitudes. However, atmospheric electrical phenomena, such as changes in the ionosphere related to seismic activity, have been noted up to several hundred kilometers above the Earth's surface. These are often detected by satellites in low Earth orbit.
B) Electrokinetic Effects
  • High-altitude Observations: Electrokinetic effects primarily affect subsurface and near-surface fluid dynamics. There is no significant evidence of direct electrokinetic phenomena being observed at high altitudes. However, related atmospheric effects, such as changes in humidity or ionization, can indirectly influence atmospheric layers.
C) Gravity Anomalies
  • High-altitude Observations: Gravity anomalies have been detected at high altitudes, including by aircraft and satellites. Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites, for example, operate at altitudes of approximately 500 km and have provided detailed maps of gravity anomalies across the Earth.

Specific High-altitude Observations

  1. Ionospheric Disturbances Related to Seismic Activity:
    • Altitude: Up to 600 km.
    • Impact: Changes in electron density in the ionosphere, detected by satellites.
  2. Gravity Anomalies Detected by GRACE Satellites:
    • Altitude: Approximately 500 km.
    • Impact: Detailed mapping of Earth's gravity field, revealing variations due to tectonic and other geological processes.

Summary

  • Stress-induced Piezoelectric Effects: Up to ionospheric altitudes (~600 km) via indirect atmospheric electrical phenomena.
  • Electrokinetic Effects: Primarily near-surface, with no significant direct high-altitude observations.
  • Gravity Anomalies: Up to satellite altitudes (~500 km), with significant observations by GRACE and similar missions.
Reports say that the navigational apparatus of UFOs can be impacted by energy fields, implying this plays a role in their crashing. Similar claims revolved around electromagnetic fields.

5. Why would UFOs avoid "Diablo Canyon"?

We need to know which one it is. The most likely based on the intersection of fault lines; fault lines with impacts; and near proximity to notable UFO-related locations--Vandenburg and Los Alamos--leaves us with New Mexico and the nuclear power planet.
Here are all nearby relevant fault lines for each.
This section took a substantial amount of digging/cross referencing over weeks. I had begun this for a fiction/story idea that didn't pan out, and did not save the litany of sources I read. This is a summary.

A) Diablo Canyon Power Plant, California

  • Hosgri Fault Zone

    • Location: Offshore, running parallel to the coast near the power plant.
    • Stress-induced Piezoelectric Effects
      • Specific Locations: Documented near Avila Beach and MontaƱa de Oro State Park.
      • Relative Strength: Moderate compared to other equivalent faults in California, such as the San Andreas Fault. The presence of quartz in the fault gouge enhances the piezoelectric effect, making it comparable to effects observed in the Garlock Fault.
    • Electrokinetic Effects
      • Specific Locations: Recorded near Diablo Canyon Power Plant and Morro Bay.
      • Relative Strength: Comparable to electrokinetic effects seen in the Hayward Fault in California due to similar fluid movement dynamics.

    • Electrokinetic Effects
      • Specific Locations: San Juan Bautista, California and Carrizo Plain National Monument.
      • Relative Strength: Significant, due to extensive fluid movement and high seismic activity. Comparable to effects observed in the Wasatch Fault Zone.
    • Gravity Anomalies
      • Specific Locations: Palmdale, California and San Bernardino, California.
      • Relative Strength: Very high, with anomalies providing critical insights into fault mechanics. Similar to those in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.
  • Shoreline Fault

    • Location: Discovered in 2008, runs very close to the plant, offshore and parallel to the coastline.
    • Length: Approximately 25 miles.
    • Within 5 miles: The Shoreline Fault comes within 5 miles of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant.
    • Stress-induced Piezoelectric Effects
      • Specific Locations: Nearshore areas close to Diablo Canyon Power Plant.
      • Relative Strength: Potential effects are moderate, with less documentation compared to major faults.
    • Electrokinetic Effects
      • Specific Locations: Offshore areas near the power plant.
      • Relative Strength: Comparable to minor faults in coastal regions.

    • Gravity Anomalies
      • Specific Locations: Near Los Alamos National Laboratory.
      • Relative Strength: Notable, with detailed mapping providing insights into fault mechanics.

6. Conclusion

Simply, some variables on the navigational systems of the UFO craft which rely on precise 4-dimensional mapping for their navigational system, with implied near real time adjustments across all parameters, are negatively impacted by unexpected or significant enough to not be able to compensate for impacts from native Earth effects generated by tectonic plate actions, in specific key locations.
I'd often suspected if there was something like this related to the handful of known crashes, and them seeming to be concentrated in certain areas. With this leaker, we see another few possible pieces of a puzzle filling.
Are they legitimate? We obviously can't tell, today. But this new data sure does align with:
  1. Reports of the USA trying to "bait" UFOs.
  2. Reports of the USA utilizing nuclear facilities to this end.
  3. UFO engagement with nuclear sites.
  4. UFOs reportedly avoiding certain areas, not limited to prior crash locations.
  5. UFOs reportedly being seen over time in the same places or repeated routes/locations.
  6. The USA getting big into gravity research along these lines (gravity scanners for military).
  7. Elizondo references to LIGO.
  8. And more beyond, that I'm sure more of you can recite from memory than I could.
Maybe this has some part of the genesis of the mythology of ley lines, because ancient humans couldn't possibly on their own know all these things. Were they just energetically charged fault lines that had some manner of intersection over time with UFOs?
If anyone wants to run with this or research equivalent sites in other parts of the world and their intersection with UFOs/UAPs, this may be a worthwhile rabbit hole for pursuit.

2024.05.14 23:11 Moonie246 Lie to me? Okay, here's some truth.

So, to preface this, my dad [47M] and I [20NB] have a TERRIBLE relationship. I am in a divorced family and this is one of those situations where both parents are the bad guy. I'll save what I did to my mom for another story, this is all about my dad.
When I was a kid, right after the divorce, I started visitation with my dad every other weekend and whenever I specifically requested to see him. My mom wanted to make sure I at least got some kind of paternal experience. I remember that, at first, it was fine and I'd go spend time with him and we'd play games or cook together. He was being truly a great father to me.
This all ended very abruptly when I didn't see him for three months with no warning. When I saw him again, he took me to an arcade and we won some tickets and got prizes. He began telling me he was in college and studying so he could get a real cool job. I was around 8 years old at this point and didn't understand fully what college was for, but I just nodded and smiled.
We are about to leave the arcade and he apologizes to me by saying, "I'm sorry I haven't seen you much. I'll try to see you more, but only if your mom will let me."
I didn't see him for another 3-ish months. This happened for 2 years straight and every time he would tell me that my mom wasn't letting him see me. This made me hate my mom growing up and started my feud with her that lasted well into my teenage years. I had always just assumed he was tell the truth because why would my dad lie to me?
Eventually we went back to the every other weekend schedule and whenever I wanted to take a walk to see him (he lived less than a mile away at this point). I, at one point, went on a walk to see him and a cop pulled over by me asking why a 10 year-old little girl was walking down a busy road by herself. I told him and he drove me to my dad.
My dad was furious and yelled at my mom, thinking I was being dropped off and not walking. He eventually let that go and I started staying at his house more often. That's when things started to shift in his personality.
I learned some interesting things while living with him! Let's make a list of these things:
  1. My dad served 4 years in the U.S. Military as a First Private in the Army.
  2. My dad has a multitude of mental issues like Bipolar 2 Schizoeffective and Autism, among other things.
  3. My dad is medicated for all of his problems.
  4. My dad never knew about me SA and r*** situation.
  5. My dad is a devout and pious Christian with severe right-wingest ideals.
How many of these are true? Numbers 2 and 5 are true, the rest are absolute lies. Now, I don't care what your political or religious beliefs are, just don't shove them down my throat. Keep them to yourselves, please and thank you. Also, mental disorders are something people can have, and that's fine. Just make sure you're medicated (if you need to be) and make people aware of your stuff if you live with them.
The other things are things I found out weren't true via other people (or myself, in the case of my r***). Turns out, everyone in my family knows my dad is crazy and just rolls with it. I was advised, by my grandmother, to just say yes or okay and move on from whatever he says. So I did.
I spent 6 years of my life just pretending and acting like stuff was okay. I came out to him as non-binary and pan. His answer was to take me to therapy and insist I was being brainwashed by Antifa to believe that any of "that stuff" was real. I was banned from any form of lesbian activity while living with him.
At one point I had come home late from a friend's house (I was 18 and spending time with my friend for her birthday) and he got mad at me. I told him I had texted him to tell him that traffic was bad and I would be a bit late. He says I'm lying and refuses to look at his phone to check for a text.
He then says I am a c*nt and that I have 24 hours to leave and find somewhere else to live. I, according to a lawyer friend, don't have to listen to him as I am a tenant on the lease that pays the majority of rent and can request 30 days to leave from the housing authority as he does not own the home we live in. I decided to say whatever and just look for somewhere else instead.
I end up moving in with a random guy, getting pregnant with twins, moving in with my mom (who is being strangely nice and accommodating) cause the guy who got me pregnant is a drug addict and abuser, and then losing my kids to my mom in a custody battle over my financial stabily after they turn 5 months old and she kicks me out of her house to be homeless.
It's at this point in my life I am fed up with my family. I'm angry, sad, and confused. So, I decided to move out to California to live with a close friend (who became my partner for a bit and then told me they don't love me, so now I'm gonna move again). I called my grandmother to tell her the plan and she said I should tell my dad.
I don't know why I even entertained the thought, but I said sure and called him. The conversation started normally and everything was fine till I told him I was headed for California. He freaked out and said that I shouldn't cause people were getting robbed and stuff. I told him I wasn't going to a big city we're stuff like that was happening and that I would be in a small town in a neighborhood of retired older residents.
He starts bringing up old stories of how I used to lie about picking on my brothers and would sneak treats as a little kid, and brought up old stories about the things I'd do as a kid. Normal dumb kid stuff that kids to to test waters on what they can and can't do. He then got all sorts of egotistical and rude with me and said, "Well, don't come cryin' to me when everything goes downhill, little girl."
I snapped. It was at that moment that I lost my sh*t and just unloaded everything on him.
"Oh, really, Dad? Like you did when we couldn't pay rent and I was a teen prstitute for a year and a half cause you came crying to me with your problems? I don't have time for your BS and I really don't have time for any more of your lies. 4 months in the military, not 4 years. Never been medicated for your problems when you're supposed to be on high dosage lithium for your problems. When you said you never knew what happened to me at 13, you lied! It was your friends that did that sht! Or maybe we should talk about the gender identity crisis I went through because of you? I was confused for years because of that! You wanna talk about lies and deceit? Address your own."
It was at that moment that I heard a voice in the background say, "Seriously, Matt?"
My dad had his phone on speaker and was at work during a meeting with his coworkers and boss.
Haven't heard from him since he hung up that call. šŸ¤£

2024.05.14 20:22 tr3v0rr96 I think I prefer Washingtonā€™s tax trade off more than Oregonā€™s

Life long Oregonian here, with no intention of moving to Washington. Where I want to live is not dictated by taxes, if it were Iā€™d move to Nevada but I have little to no interest in living in Nevada. No offense Nevadans. ā€œMuh taxesā€ is just not a good reason for me to live or not live in one state or the other.
From what Iā€™ve seen about the different types of taxes in Washington, and I think I like how Washington has no state income tax, while having the trade off of a sales tax (while having some exemptions including groceries), over Oregonā€™s income tax while having the trade off of no sales tax.
Oregon and Washingtonā€™s property tax are about the same, being just slightly lower than middle of the pack compared to the other 48 states, ranking 27th and 28th respectively (if memory is correct). Washington does have a lower rate long term capital gains tax rate than Oregon but what I want to focus on are the two main trade offs in Oregon and Washington.
What I like about Washingtonā€™s tax trade off more is that this frees up money that I could put in emergency savings or investments, whereas with Oregonā€™s trade off, most of my spending, outside of 2 loans (under 4k combined) and rent are groceries which (from what I read, groceries are not subject to taxes). I donā€™t buy much fast food, or much of anything that would be subject to sales tax in Washington.
Iā€™ve been trying my hardest to live frugally to get myself out of the paycheck to paycheck rut and I feel like Washingtonā€™s tax trade off would help me put more money that would go towards an emergency fund.
If it were purposed in a ballot measure for Oregon to adopt Washingtonā€™s tax trade off, I lean slightly on a vote in favor depending on the terms like not enforcing a sales tax on essentials like rent (TIL people get charged sales tax on rent in some states), groceries, clothes, medications or maybe even cell phones. Having this trade off seems like an indirect incentive for citizens to save their money rather than spending on nonessentials.
Though, I think Oregon adopting a sales tax would be extremely unpopular and I am not entirely enthusiastic about a sales tax myself. I have heard the argument that a sales tax is an inherently regressive tax, in that two families making widely different incomes are charged the same amount for the same goods. I find this unfair, and trying to legislate a work around this seems like an impossible mission.
Yet, for my personal situation, I think myself and others trying to be frugal to save for the future would benefit more from Washingtonā€™s tax trade off.
This makes me wonder why Oregon has our own trade off while Washington has this different trade off.
I wonder if there is a tourism reason for us having no sales tax, as a lot people from Idaho and Washington for our beaches but the other states without sales tax arenā€™t states youā€™d consider very touristy. I could see a New Yorker wanting a quite retreat to New Hampshire (no sales tax), Montana (no sales tax) is a hot spot for skiā€™ing and Alaska (no sales tax) is an outdoors personā€™s dream come true, but they arenā€™t as big of a tourist hot spot as California, Hawaii, Florida, New York and to some degree Texas.
I do wonder if there is an employment reason for why Washington has no income tax. Some of the nationā€™s biggest companies are head quartered in Washington (Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft come to mind) and I donā€™t think this is just coincidence. Along with not having a state income tax, Washington also has no payroll tax making this a prime place to headquarter a huge business.
Could this tax trade off bring better jobs to Oregon, attract talented people from out of state and help grow our economy? Perhaps
What are your thoughts? Oregonians, do you share some of my thoughts on this? Would this sort of trade off implemented in Oregon cause more good than harm in Oregon? What might you disagree with me about on this matter?

2024.05.14 20:20 Familiar_Cod_7890 How can I make a career change into Aerospace Engineering with a Management Degree?

This will probably disappear but I need advice please!
Problem: I am graduating with a BSc in Management soon, I want to make a career change to aerospace engineering. I am 21 from the UK, I have a Maths and English GCSE but no A levels in Maths or Physics.
Why?: I want to do a job that has elements of practicality and design, a job thats consistently well-paid and has some mathematical background to it. I have hobbies of plane spotting and space, I didnt do Maths and Physics in school because my teacher said I wasn't smart enough. I have realised now I am, I just didnt work hard when I was a teenager because I didnt know how to.
Heres how I think I should plan this out, please please please comment below any advice:
Spend the next year doing Physics and Maths A-Levels (privately funded as I cant find any free ways to do it)
Apply for Degree Apprenticeships in Aerospace Engineering (Looking at big companies like BAE, Boeing e.t.c)
Do as many free online MOOCs related to engineering as I can.

2024.05.14 19:20 flyver67 Where do you even start? My mom has gone totally off the deep end. She is refusing to take care of herself because the world is going to hell. I asked how she was today and got the below. Not sure how I will take care of her when she canā€™t take care of herself.

ā€œThe country that I have spent nearly 76 years in and that I love is no longer here. I 100% put the blame on the pathetic 'thing' that is 'leading' our country. He only gives a shit about himself and power. The MINUTE he became President, he shut down the Keystone Pipeline and opened the border. More than ten million illegals from all over the world have come through the border, not legally at border crossings, but wherever they could cut fence, take down the wall, cut through razor wire, ANY WAY THEY COULD GET IN! The border patrol 'process them' except for God knows how many 'gotaways' that get in in the dead of night. ALL of the illegals are given cell phones and money. Crime is at an all time high. Illegals are robbing and killing people in New York City almost daily. ALL of the liberal states, as in California, have a huge homeless population with people everywhere, shitting all over the place. Liberal Cities, New York included are putting the illegals up in 5 star hotels, which they destroy. They give them money, free food, whatever they need, while the people just trying to get by are being attacked and killed, even in Time Square, almost daily. People are leaving California and New York in droves, mostly moving to Florida. Liberal States have defunded their police and most have a no bail policy. So, illegals who rob and beat and kill, are being arrested and then let back out. Normally, they go right back out and do it again. Migrants are sleeping at O'Hare airport and other airports. Residents are being asked to house illegals for $500 a month. Illegals are getting free health care, free everything while we have people that cannot afford to buy food. Over 45K in Chinese Nationals (all men) have been allowed in at the border. China does not just let military age men leave of their own accord. Wonder what they are going to do? China is buying up thousands of acres in the U.S., normally around military bases, including Oklahoma and nobody can stop it. The FBI director is warning everyone in the U.S. that all information points to Iran, Syria, etc., ARE planning on terror attacks in the U.S. Great! Biden has screwed Israel and demanded that they have a cease fire because they are killing too many people. He never mentions the innocent people that were killed in Israel on October 7th, bragging about putting babies in ovens and cutting off their heads. Israel is our biggest ally in the middle East. There are HUGE protests all over the U.S. that are against Israel. Practically EVERY college in the U.S. has protesters that basically want every Jew dead. Yale, Harvard, all of those kind of schools, along with many, many more colleges. Professors have been fired, as well as the President of Harvard resigned in January because of her condemnation of Jews, and so on and so on. As a person, Trump is not my favorite person, BUT EVERYTHING was better than it had been in a long, long time when he was President. The MINUTE Biden got in, he started undoing everything that Trump had done....and the deterioration began and continues. I could go on and type all night, but I am just telling you why I hate so much right now, but mostly our ass wipe 'leader' and all of the Democrats who support them. An illegal was caught at the Walmart in Wagoner trying to get in a woman's trunk, in WALMART! Biden promises he will raise taxes, especially on the 'rich.' They need to pay their 'fair share' even though the top 1% of taxpayers in the U.S. 45.8% of the income taxes paid, even though they only earn about 25% of the income. The top 1% of taxpayers accounted for more income taxes than the bottom 90%....and asshole wants them to pay their fair share! Illegals are breaking into homes, making up a fake lease and then squatting in the houses. Guess who has the rights? It is not the homeowners! Squatters in NYC had broken into a woman's home who had just died. Her daughter went to check on the house and was killed by two illegal squatters and put in a bag. She was found by her son. Boeing planes are having huge problems, to the point that the head of Boeing and another person resigned. While descending, a door in the exit row blew off. It had never had any bolts in it. There have been fires in engines, tires falling off right after taking off, pieces just falling off of the planes and others that I can't remember. It seems that is a weekly thing. Ask me if I would get on a plane right now, especially a Boeing, which the majority are. I could go on and on and on, but I am going to bed. Overall, prices on everything are up around 20%. People can't buy the food they need. Gas is back up. Illegals are taking over the schools to where citizens can't go or are afraid to. I am glad I am old. Going to bed. Love you guys. Aren't you glad I 'shared?' ā€œ

2024.05.14 17:26 woodxventure Laid off July 2023. Had my first born in the same month and decided to enjoy the time off and be a dad. Loved seeing my daughter grow up. Started looking again....

My background. Manufacturing engineer with 8 years experience. Experience in lean manufacturing and supervising production floor. Located in California.
Started job searching back in February 2024 but didn't really dive in the job search since March/April and it's been difficult to find a job.
Every call I get these days are always with a recruiter and most job postings now seem to require you to have all this experience.
I never had trouble finding a job before but this time feels different.
Was it wrong for me to take this long of a gap or is the market truly bad right now?
Side note: Tbh I'm glad I took the gap. Been needing a break from work. Being a new dad has been an amazing experience.

2024.05.14 16:36 Necessary_Drummer692 [CN] Company Merger Pre-Employment Drug Test screening for THC

Location: The address listed for my company is in Connecticut according to my drug test form. The company that we are merging with is headquartered in California. I work remotely in Arizona.
When I was initially hired I passed the background check and there was no drug test of any kind. However, due to a recent merger, we are required to pass a drug test that was requested by the new company, which is headquartered in California. However, like I mentioned above, the address of the company requesting the test is still my current company, whose address is listed in Connecticut. It is a 10 panel test that test that includes THC, and I think it is very likely that I will test positive for it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Iā€™m hesitant to tell HR my situation, even though Iā€™ve quit and donā€™t intend on using again. In the event I fail the test do I have any course of action to keep my job?
