Lúc trước là có 1 đứa trong nhóm đi Nhật, đi về thì nó tặng mỗi đứa trong nhóm 1 hộp sâm nhỏ, đến em thì nó tặng 1 thanh (xin nhấn mạnh là 1 thanh) KitKat vị trà xanh loại nhỏ, trời ơi thề là cảm giác nó tủi thân kinh khủng, còn vài đứa bạn khác sau khi ra trường em rủ nó đi cf để học chung hoặc đi xem phim, ăn uống này kia thì chối bận liên tục. Mũ tai bèo (Tưởng Năng Tiến)
Tôi đã trót có dăm ba lời về nón cối, mũ cối, và dép râu nên (lỡ trớn) cũng xin được thưa luôn – đôi câu – về cái nón tai bèo.
“Theo một tài liệu, chiếc mũ tai bèo đầu tiên xuất hiện ở một đơn vị võ trang ta trong đêm Đồng Khởi (17-1-1960) ở Bến Tre. Dần dần chiếc mũ vải mềm, màu xanh, vành tròn, có làn sóng giống như những cánh bèo trên sông nước, càng được đông đảo các chiến sĩ giải phóng quân sử dụng.
Đến những năm 1966-1967, chiếc mũ tai bèo “dễ thương như một bàn tay nhỏ”, với nhiều tiện lợi ở một xứ sở nhiệt đới nắng lắm mưa nhiều, trong hoàn cảnh chiến trận cần cơ động, gọn nhẹ, đã được đưa vào hành trang của anh bộ đội Giải phóng. Nó chính thức nằm trong trang phục của Quân giải phóng miền Nam. Và từ đó, chiếc mũ tai bèo cùng đôi dép cao su cũng hiện lên trong thơ, văn, nghệ thuật, gần gũi, giản dị mà đầy tự hào, cao vợi.” (Đàm Chu Văn. “Nhớ Chiếc Mũ Tai Bèo.” Đồng Nai Online 13.11.2019).
Trí nhớ của tác giả đoạn văn thượng dẫn e có vấn đề, chứ thực sự thì cái mũ bèo nhèo này chưa từng bao giờ được ca tụng (“tự hào, cao vợi”) như nón cối hay dép râu cả. Lý do dễ hiểu vì nó không thuộc về lực lượng chính quy mà chỉ là trang phục dành cho đám binh lính Mặt Trận Giải Phóng Miền Nam (M.T.G.P.M.N) thôi. Chả những thế, cái mặt trận này đã chết. Vì chút “nhậy cảm chính trị” (hay cũng có thể là do “tế nhị”) nên không mấy ai muốn nhắc nhở (xa gần) gì đến sợi giây thừng trong một căn nhà đã có người bị treo cổ!
Thảng hoặc, mới thấy một vị quan chức cấp địa phương có cố gắng “nâng cấp” cái mũ tai bèo nhưng nỗ lực này – xem ra – cũng chả đến đâu. Ký giả Đoàn Nguyễn (Sài Gòn Tiếp Thị Online) tường thuật:
“Tại một hồ nước trên cánh đồng thuộc xã Đại Cường (Đại Lộc, Quảng Nam) có một pho tượng cô du kích đầu đội mũ tai bèo, vai mang súng. Bức tượng khi xây có thể là thạch cao trắng, nhưng bây giờ, người ta thấy đã loang lổ nhiều mảng đen.
Trong hồ nước, nông dân làm chuồng nuôi vịt. Qua mấy ngày mưa lũ, đàn vịt không còn, chỉ còn lại cái chuồng xiêu vẹo tả tơi. Một bác nông dân vác cuốc đi ngang dừng lại góp chuyện: “Mấy tháng trước, hồ nước sạch sẽ lắm, không ai dám thả vịt, thả cá, nước trong vắt. Nhưng từ khi thay Phật bà bằng cô du kích thì ra như ri đây”. Phật Quan Âm? Tôi ngạc nhiên và nhìn kỹ thì thấy có điều lạ là cô du kích này đứng trên… toà sen.
Trước đó, tuy cô du kích chưa bao giờ có chỗ đứng “ngang hàng” với Phật Quan Âm nhưng cũng chiếm được vị trí tương đối khá trang trọng trong tranh ảnh cổ động và sách báo của nhà đương cuộc Hà Nội. Cùng với những thành viên của lực lượng Dân Công Hỏa Tuyến hay Thanh Niên Xung Phong, họ luôn được xưng tụng là những bông hoa nở giữa chiến trường, bông hoa trên tuyến lửa, hoa lan trong rừng cháy …
Sau khi chiến trường đã ngưng tiếng súng thì mọi hy vọng về một cuộc sống an lành (“đôi chim bồ câu trắng hẹn nhau về làng xưa”) cũng đều biến thành ảo vọng. Những bông hoa từng nở trên tuyến lửa đều héo úa trong các “xóm không chồng” giữa thời bình. Họ trở thành những con số không tròn trĩnh: không chồng, không con, không nhà, và không chế độ!
Họ chỉ được hưởng trợ cấp mỗi một lần thôi nhưng rất tượng trưng, và cũng rất muộn màng. Quyết định 290/2005/QĐ-TTg của Thủ Tướng Chính Phủ – Về Chế Độ, Chính Sách Đối Với Một Số Đối Tượng Trực Tiếp Tham Gia Kháng Chiến Chống Mỹ Cứu Nước nhưng chưa được Hưởng Chính Sách Của Đảng và Nhà Nước – ký ngày 8 tháng 11 năm 2005, quy định như sau:
Dân quân tập trung ở miền Bắc từ ngày 27 tháng 01 năm 1973 trở về trước, du kích tập trung ở miền Nam (bao gồm cả lực lượng mật) từ ngày 30 tháng 4 năm 1975 trở về trước do cấp có thẩm quyền quản lý đã về gia đình phải được hưởng trợ cấp một lần theo số năm thực tế tham gia dân quân, du kích tập trung, cứ mỗi năm được hưởng 400.000 đồng. Mức chi trả trợ cấp một lần thấp nhất bằng 800.000 đồng.
Những con số bạc bẽo và thảm hại này hoàn toàn tương phản với tâm tình chứa chan của những kẻ đã từng chiến đấu bên nhau, dù họ không hẳn đã là đồng đội cùng chung lực lượng hay đơn vị. Một cựu chiến binh tâm sự:
Sáng ngày 30-4-1975, sau khi Sư đoàn 10 (thuộc Quân đoàn 3) đánh chiếm xong một số mục tiêu đã định, ông Việt khi đó là Thượng sĩ, Tiểu đội trưởng Tiểu đội xe, thuộc Phòng hậu cần Sư đoàn 10, lái chiếc zeép (chiến lợi phẩm) có gắn máy thông tin 2W và rơ-moóc, đưa đồng chí Võ Khắc Phụng-Phó sư đoàn trưởng, Tham mưu trưởng Sư đoàn 10 cùng một số sĩ quan chỉ huy tổ chức đánh chiếm Bộ Tổng tham mưu ngụy.
Trên xe có một thiếu nữ độ 20 tuổi, gương mặt tươi sáng, đội mũ tai bèo, luôn luôn mang khẩu tiểu liên AK bên mình. Đó là nữ chiến sĩ biệt động Sài Gòn Nguyễn Thị Nết (biệt hiệu: Nguyễn Thị Trung Kiên, nguyên mẫu nhân vật Cô Nhíp trong bộ phim truyện cùng tên – bộ phim đầu tiên của điện ảnh miền Nam sau ngày giải phóng).
Theo sự dẫn đường thông minh, chủ động và linh hoạt của cô Nết, đội hình tấn công vừa vận động, vừa chiến đấu, vượt qua mọi trở ngại, thần tốc xốc tới…
Đã 40 năm trôi qua. Ông Việt và những người bạn chiến đấu ngày ấy … vẫn thường xuyên liên lạc, thông báo cho nhau chuyện vui, buồn. Những lúc như thế, các ông thường nhắc tới cô Nết, mong biết tin tức về người nữ biệt động xinh đẹp, gan dạ, mưu trí, dũng cảm và thông minh ấy… (Phạm Xưởng. “Cô Nhíp Đang Ở Đâu.” TIẾNG NÓI CỦA CỰU CHIẾN BINH VIỆT NAM – 01.06.2015).
Câu hỏi trên đã nhận được hồi đáp, qua một status ngắn của FB Văn Toàn, vào hôm 13 tháng 4 năm 2016:

Đó là nữ chiến sĩ biệt động Sài Gòn Cao Thị Nhíp (tên hoạt động là Nguyễn Thị Trung Kiên,). Vốn thông thuộc đường xá, Cô Nhíp đã ngồi trên xe chỉ huy để hướng dẫn toàn đơn vị của Thiếu tá Bùi Quan Bùi Quang Đấng đánh chiếm sân bay Tân Sơn Nhất. Sau này, đạo diễn Nguyễn Trí Việt của Hãng phim Giải Phóng đã dựa vào hình tượng này để dựng thành bộ phim “Cô Nhíp” khá nổi tiếng. Hiện nay bà Nhíp đã sang định cư tại thành phố Garden Grove, Nam California, Hoa Kỳ từ lâu và mang quốc tịch Mỹ với tên họ khác…

Bà Nhíp không phải là người duy nhất đã rời khỏi Việt Nam, và đã thay tên cùng quố́c tịch. Hơn nửa thế kỷ qua đã có vài triệu người bỏ đi như thế, và dòng người này chưa bao giờ ngừng lại cả. T.S Phương Mai gọi đây là cuộc “tị nạn niềm tin.”
Cũng như bao nhiêu kẻ khác, khi niềm tin đã mất, bà Nhíp có toàn quyền thay đổi chính kiến và đổi thay nơi cư trú để tìm đến một nơi có cuộc sống an toàn và khả kham hơn. Chỉ có điều đáng tiếc (và đáng nói) là số nạn nhân của những cái nón tai bèo thì quá nhiều mà kẻ may mắn, có cơ hội làm lại cuộc đời, lại quá hiếm hoi – và dường như chỉ có mỗi một thôi!

Ngày 29/4/1975, xe tăng của quân Bắc Việt đã vào đến cửa ngõ Sài Gòn theo hướng Tây Bắc. Trên xe có một cô gái trẻ, xinh đẹp, đầu đội mũ tai bèo, dẫn đường.
Cô Nhíp (Cao Thị Nhíp – VC thì gọi cô là Nguyễn Trung Kiên), tên thật, người thật, việc thật (có nhiệm vụ dẫn xe tăng vào Sài Gòn), giờ cô ở đâu? Sau khi hoàn thành nhiệm vụ cao cả đó, cô được gì? Cô làm gì? Cô ra sao?
Trả lời: cô Nhíp đã qua Mỹ sống từ lâu. Cô đã mang quốc tịch Mỹ với tên họ khác. Một khoảng đời với cái tên Nhíp trước đây, cô đã tự chôn vùi.
Mùa hè cách đây vài năm, ở thành phố Garden Grove, Nam California, tôi gặp lại Nhíp. Vẫn xinh đẹp như xưa nhưng khi được hỏi về ngày 29/4/1975, Nhíp trả lời: “Tôi đã quên rồi. Quên lâu lắm rồi”.
Một buổi sáng thượng tuần tháng 10 năm ngoái, “Cô Nhíp” đến nhà thăm tôi khi vừa từ Cali về lại VN.
Tôi và nó là đôi bạn thân trước khi nó rời bỏ Sài Gòn để đến nước Mỹ xa xôi và trở thành cư dân ở đó.
Hai mươi năm có lẽ. “Cô Nhíp” năm xưa đã mất dấu thật rồi. Chỉ còn đây, một người Mỹ gốc Việt.
Chuyện gì đã xảy ra trên quê hương VN tôi vậy? Sử sách sẽ ghi chép thế nào đây? Cả tôi lẫn nó đều không ai nhắc về “Cô Nhíp” với chiếc xe tăng từ Củ Chi tiến về Sài Gòn cách đây 48 năm, về cái chuyện nó rời bỏ VN và quên đi quá khứ “hào hùng” của nó.
Có nỗi xót xa không thể nói thành lời.

“Did you guys take the seasickness pills? We don't want a repeat of last time.”
“Yes, I would rather be overboard than have to suffer through that misery again.” I rolled my eyes at Torum's exaggerated hate for the motion sickness they had on the maiden voyage.
The others gave similar affirmations to taking the medicine. We weren't on the boat yet, or even at the coast, but it was smart to give it time to kick in. Cresting the hill near the sea, we saw the progress that had occurred while we were stuck inside our base. It was something that would make life infinitely easier for the Venlil.
The three of them couldn't see it from their seats in my truck. Their heads didn't quite rise above the dash. It was a uniquely human creation, but I knew they would appreciate not needing to be ferried from shore to the boats and back. Though I was a little sad we only did that once.
Damn Gojids, ruining my fun.
After just a few minutes, we parked at the newly created parking lot. Though calling it a parking lot was giving it too much credit. In reality it was little more than a gravel and sand patch that was compressed down to create a more solid surface for the vehicle.
My door opened with a light creak. Once I was out of the truck, I opened the rear door for the Venlil while Atama began unloading the supplies. I received a trio of “thanks” from them in various ranges of friendliness. Once out, they saw what had given Atama and I our good moods.
Well, I guess the additional good mood.
“What's that?” Sant was the most curious of the group at the latest addition to our launch site and pointed towards the first structure of its kind here on Venlil Prime.
“That, my fluffy friend, is a dock!” I gestured at the long wooden structure that extended out into the sea. Said sea was gently lapping against the wooden beams while the wooden walkway itself stood an even two feet above the surface. The brand-new structure stood out on the otherwise pristine coastline.
At the very end of the dock, where the water was deeper, was Atama's vessel. Sadly for both him and it, the larger vessel was still not necessary for our shallow water explorations. But that would not be the case forever. There was a reason we had the larger vessel on hand after all. Eventually my Orca II would be replaced after we completed our exploration of the reef. After that we'd be searching for alien Pelagic life and exploring the waters beyond the horizon.
Speaking of my boat, it was tied up along the left side of the Dock. The Orca II bobbed a bit more than the larger and more stable research vessel. We would be using it for this expedition out to the reef that would last until tomorrow afternoon.
“A dock?”
Atama stepped forward, slinging a bag of food hanging on his shoulder. “Yes, it's a structure to hold our ships and to make it easier to board, supply, and disembark. It will be invaluable after a long expedition.”
Giving one of the pylons that stuck up a mild kick, I nodded in approval. “A few engineers set this up while we were indisposed. That means you guys won't have to worry about getting soaked on the way to the boat anymore.”
Hale stood on his toes to look in the bed of the truck. “I was wondering why I didn't see the rubber raft this morning. I was worried you were going to have us swim today.”
“I mean, we can.” I put on a faux serious thinking face as I pretended to ponder that idea. “It would be good practice after all...”
Torum, of course, was not having it. “I took the training you predators made us do. But that was in case I fall into the sea, not for traveling to your boats.” His crossed arms and narrowed eyes made it clear he would fight that idea. Likely physically as well as verbally.
I shrugged with a light smile. “No worries, I was just pul- I was just messing with ya.”
Hale gave me a curious look, but not much else. With a few guiding orders here and there, we managed to get the supplies on board in short order. After Sant confirmed our readiness for departure to the folks back home, we boarded.
This trip was to be a longer expedition compared to the single day outing a month ago. That meant that we and the Venlil would be sleeping on the boat together. Needless to say both us and them were nervous about that. Not that anything dangerous would occur, but for how the herbivorous aliens would handle it. Sant would likely be the most fine out of them based on his personality, Torum was bound to be interesting, and Hale would probably be a good bit nervous all night.
Night being a relative thing on this constantly sunny planet.
“The lab coats make any last minute requests?” Sant looked confused for a moment before he made a noise of understanding and pulled out his holopad and pulled up some notes from the lab techs.
“There's the request Mula made for substrate and sediment samples a few paws ago; she wants to see what the ocean sand holds. Phim wants us to scrape a few corals for bacteria and algae samples, if there even is any. Dr. Khan was insistent on more samples of the colorful coral and as many others as we can, she says she has made some interesting findings but needs a greater sample size to make any conclusions. She also wants more samples of animals, specifically invertebrates.”
The older woman had been pretty busy in the lab lately.
I wonder what she's found?
“Oh, and there's a message for Atama from... Mayor Rina?” The large man poked his head up from the storage compartment he'd been filling. “The message is: “Don't forget my Kelp, Mr. Oliver.” Since when did she know our schedule?”
“Oh, Aila gave it to her.” Hale said as hopped from the dock onto the Orca II. “They have been in contact since the potluck. The Mayor requested updates on our work so she can be better informed on what we're doing. I'm more curious about her request to Atama specifically.”
“Yeah!” I turned to give the shrugging Kiwi with a raised eyebrow. “How come the Mayor is giving you a request? Not the team, but you?”
“Remember when that kid ran into me? And how all the exterminators got all twitchy?” The man's eyes slid over to Torum, who simply huffed and turned his head. With a huff of his own, the man turned his attention back to us. “Well she helped diffuse the situation, as thanks, I promised to bring her back some Sand Kelp. After she ate our whole supply, it seems she has become enamored with em.”
“Huh. Alrighty then.” If the Mayor wants Kelp leaves, then we'd make sure to get her enough to last. We needed her on our side in order to keep the program out of any more hot water. She'd helped us with the townsfolk in the last few weeks. If the price was a few leaves, that was easy. “Let's not forget that when we collect some samples.”
Atama gave a cheerful thumbs up as we finished loading up the supplies and gear.
A good few cordura tubes and cases of rattling boxes put a smile on my face. While this was supposed to be the time where I would begin exposing the Venlil to alternate specimen gathering methods, the issue with the Gojids and the spike of discontent canceled the other trips we'd planned for that month.
We were behind schedule, which wasn't the end of the world, progress was progress and there are tons of studies that take more for less. And at least we'd already discovered proof of xenomarine-biology. Nobody can doubt our program in that sense.
Selfishly, I was also itching to test out my skills here. I mean, all I've done so far while here was drive a boat and help teach the Venlil to swim. Atama and Mei at least showed off their skills in the sea and the lab respectively. Me? I set up a few shallow water traps and got wasted... Not exactly what I was brought on to do. Hell, I had to get Hale to do the specimen retrieval after being stuck in the base.
So catching a big damn alien fish would show the Speep and the people back home why I was brought along. Placing a box of trolling lures by the aft edge, I thought about how I'd deal with this.
I gave Hale a brief explanation of what I was bringing a week or so ago, but knowing I'd need to explain it to the other two, I decided to use it as a trial run. He was very unnerved, obviously. The concept of hunting was one of the greatest taboos in the Federation. He didn't want to be involved in the methods at all. He would only accept being an observer and help with preservation. Him not fleeing to his room that night was honestly more than I expected.
But he did give me important feedback. He and I agreed we should wait until we were already underway before breaking the news to the other two. After all, gathering samples of fish besides scavengers is necessary. We know they exist, Atama's colorful follower being our best example.
A quick visual check on the others showed. It would still be close to an hour before we actually cast off. Giving the box a friendly pat, I started heading back to the car to get the rest of the gear. I had a good feeling about this trip. Hopefully it will go even better than the last.

[Transcript time advance: Two Human hours]
“Now, I bet you're wondering why I have you three here and Atama operating the helm?” The trio of Venlil gave me a few curious ear gestures. I was seated on one of the crates full of lures, hooks, and other various fishing equipment. “Today we're going to be using a few methods that I know will cause some... Issues...”
Torum's eyes narrowed, an expected result, as was his paw hovering closer to his knife. Calm down buddy, it's just fishing. Hale on the other hand gave an ear flick of understanding while Sant tilted his head slightly.
“Now I know that the Venlil, and the Federation at large, have their own beliefs on the food chain and a proper ecosystem.” A shitty belief. “However, I and the rest of my people do not, and as we saw, the ecosystem beneath the waves is a lot more varied than you are used to. Such differences have clearly made a few of you nervous. And that is fine, but you are all going to need to get used to a few things pretty quick.”
“Like?” Sant was curious, but I could see a few nervous ticks in his ears.
Well, here goes nothing. Taking in a deep breath, I reached behind me and brought out a fishing rod. The rod was my go-to shark rod back home when fishing the Gulf of Mexico as well as the Atlantic coast from the Eastern Shore down to the Keys. There were no hooks or lures attached; just the rod and spooled reel.
“I'm going to be hunting down predatory fish near the reef.” The reaction was instantaneous.
Sant, despite his claim to be “predatory” , flinched back. He might not be afraid of the sea and displays less fear overall, but this clearly was not something he liked. Torum acted as predicted. His paw actively gripped his knife as he looked at the rod with extreme levels of distrust.
Before they could speak, I held up my hand. “I know you're going to have questions, but I'd like to ask you to let me finish my speech first. That cool?” The two didn't give me any pushback, so I continued.
“As we saw back at the end of August, the fish here are similar in how aquatic life acts on Earth. By primarily being predatorial. Out of all the species we saw, the only one we could identify as perhaps herbivorous was a type of mollusk.” I set down the rod and pulled out my holopad. I brought up an image album containing a few of the species we found in the traps laid all those weeks ago. I passed Sant the holopad since he was in the middle. “These species were discovered by laying down traps in the shallow waters near where the dock now is. And while we have no way of knowing if they are hunters or not, each species was observed to have flesh in their stomachs. Also, one did have some plant matter as well which is interesting.”
Hale looked a little unwell at the second half. I hadn't told him that tidbit, a request from Dr. Khan. She herself was struggling to get Phim, Tumi, and Mula to not show high stress and other bad signs. Tumi especially, she froze or bolted whenever exposed to anything more predatory than a jarred specimen. Something our older colleague was working hard to remedy.
“I don't think I have to tell you three how dangerous it could be to try and capture one of these animals by hand.” I saw what that blue and red fish did. No way I'm pissing it off and putting my fingers near its mouth. “That's where this gear comes in. It allows me to catch these fish in a safe manner. I will do it by using lures that mimic their prey.”
“You want to bring those dangerous beasts on board!? Yet you denied my request to bring my flare gun!”
“You'll imitate prey!? To find more predators!?”
“I knew you humans were a dangerous species! This is proof. You use tactics that surpass the Arxur in their cruelty!”
“Alright!” I had to raise my voice a bit to speak over the two. I wasn't happy about that with how the three reacted, but I wasn't about to be compared to the Arxur. “I understand why you are against these methods, and being close to them in the first place. But it's necessary. We can't just ignore the largest group of animals just because they are predators. We will study them all equally.”
“And once we know the sea is full of these predators, how will we deal with them?” Torum, the Venlil that kills then burns any non-herbivores spoke up. I knew this was coming, it was long overdue to lay down some rules.
“We won't be.” That got him to bolt upright.
“We won't be removing them!? Why!? Just having these creatures on our planet taints the water! It is my duty to remove said taint!”
“Not here, Torum. While the Federation seems to have a policy of removing predators, Humanity does not. We live with our natural world, dangerous and nuisance animals included.”
“We are not on your planet. Here on Venlil Prime, we keep our people safe by burning threats to ash.”
I swept my hand out over the sea. “Well unless you have a method of torching the sea, I don't see said methods doing much.”
“But that doesn't matter.” Once again I picked up the rod and from one of the side compartments, I pulled out a lure. The chrome top water plug rattled gently. I held it in front of my face and shook it slightly. “We’re here for science and discovery, as sanctioned by your government.”
I let out a sigh at their expressions. Anger, fear, and uncertainty spread over their faces and bodies. “I know now after coming here that it won't be easy. This is hardly what we expected when we came to this planet. Still, this is how things need to be done. Once we reach the reef, Atama will dive and get a few samples, before we disturb them further. Once back, I get to work. He'll act as my assistant in case something big bites.”
“Won't bringing any of these creatures on board be dangerous?” I looked over to Sant. The poor guy did not look happy about this, but at least he wasn't acting like Torum.
“A fish out of water? Dangerous? Not likely.” I chuckled a little at how a bit of the negative emotions morphed into confusion. Their translators were likely giving errors. “It's a human phrase, but you'll understand it when you see it. Unless they are as formidable as a Swordfish or a Sawfish, I think I'll be able to handle ‘em.”
I put the lure back in its place and stowed the rod in its holder before standing up. The thing had reeled in a number of larger fish. Hopefully it would hold up to the unknown creatures here. I had more, in case it was over or under kill, but it should be a good way to probe.
With my quick speech done, I let the three Venlil get back to the tasks they were assigned to. Sant hurried over to Atama, likely seeking to get information and clarification from the man. Their friendship was a good one, similar to myself and Hale's.
Hale himself decided to go back below deck. While he had more of a heads up about this. He was still surprised when I told him of the plan. I didn't like surprising them this much. But it had to happen this way. Ripping the band-aid off was the surest way to stop any dread from stewing.
Slow and steady had not been working as we'd thought. Only Sant, Aila, and Hale seemed like they were able to come to terms with changing views. The rest? Torum was at least upfront with his issues.
Speaking of, the scarred Venlil would likely be the most useful one, once we got him free of his hatred. Strong, experienced, and willful. He'd make one hell of an asset if we could get him into the sea. If only he wasn't such a jerk.
Regardless, I needed to make sure I was ready. A quadruple check of my gear would get my thoughts away from the planetary issues and back on my task.

The video title began with 'nhac phim' and had an asian guy chained to chair while a guy in a white scientist coat cut off his fingers one by one. It was a very bright setting and at one point, the scientist put a worm into the asian guy's ear. Later, the Asian guy got tentacles like Dr Octo and killed the scientist with very bad CGI blood effects. There were also new gold blade things where his fingers once were. There was music (with most likely vietnamese singing) in the background and also some weird scenes of a body in a coffin surrounded by white flowers.

2. There is only one notification icon for maximum one app at a time in the top left corner (compared to 3 before), that's very inconvenient.

Kỳ vọng lợi suất trái phiếu vọt ầm ầm và thị trường trái phiếu sập là có hơi quá. Đến giờ mình vẫn duy trì đa số view trong bài này, thị trường đang đi vào “uncharted teritory” với bond market nhưng mình không quá lo về thị trường. Nhưng mình cũng không quá kỳ vọng year-end rally. Mình cho rằng thị trường vọt lên là sẽ có lực kéo trở lại ngay.
Đến nay view của mình so với view này hồi đầu tháng 10 vẫn không thay đổi nhiều.

Vậy thị trường không còn đáng lo? Mình không nghĩ vậy. View của mình là nếu hợp lý thì thị trường sẽ không move quá mạnh và ngồi đợi thêm diễn biến vì thị trường sẽ moving vào vùng đất vô định (“uncharted territory”) cho một vài tháng với thị trường bond.

Điều này tương ứng với dự báo earnings Q4 2023 của analyst khá bèo, chỉ 3,9% average.

Với cả earnings growth và GDP growth đều giảm it nhiều so vói dự đoán, mình nghĩ về phía growth không ổn lắm. Chưa kể thị trường việc làm sẽ cooling. Cộng thêm volatility của bond market tăng, year-end rallly không dễ.

Túm lại, mình nghĩ chance của year-end market rally không quá cao, nhưng mình không nghĩ sẽ rớt nhiều. Mình hướng về phía market range trade, nhưng cũng không immobile.
Bạn có thể tin anh Tom một nửa và bác El-Erian một nửa, canh thị trường rớt (khi mà earnings của weak companies ra như tuần sau và bond yield lại vọt lên) để gom một phần hàng, và giữ một phần cash trong trường hợp bác El-Erian đúng.

The training was done. The Venlil could keep themselves afloat, though it was primarily by way of doggie paddling. An adorable sight I recorded to keep and to send home when able.
The lab in the base was complete and operational. Aila and Dr. Khan set everything up perfectly. Holding tanks were cycled, freezers were on, and the necessary chemicals were stocked.
The gear necessary for exploration was operational. And the ships were stocked with supplies and the batteries were charged. And a map of the region was created from satellite imagery. It was time to get out there!
"Lance! Are you and Atama ready?" Dr. Khan stood next to me as I loaded a bit of last minute gear into the truck bed. "Atama told me Sant volunteered to join you, so you're going to need gear for one more."
"Yup! Already got an extra PFD and food ready. I'm pretty happy to have more of 'em join us. I was worried it'd be just the two of us and two Vens."
"I'm still worried about still only having five people total. We could delay? Perhaps we should wait for more to be ready. Like the microbiologists?"
"That'd be ideal, yeah. I wanted Tumi and Phim to come along to analyze samples on the ship in real time, but we can't. They still refuse to learn to swim. It wouldn't be safe." That and the fear of being alone with "predators" on the ocean. "But I don't know how long they'll need. They could just need a few days or a few weeks."
"Would that be so bad?"
"Long term?" I said, scratching the back of my head. "Not really, we have no deadlines or anything like that, but honestly? I really want to get out there. I'm dying to see what's out there."
The explanation wasn't the best one. "Fair enough, I understand. Perhaps we can at least convince Mula or get Aila to join? The older Venlil is more receptive to the project and won't scream on the boat."
"Mula is still a bit too skittish and Aila is needed here to keep the peace. She does great work calming the others and it'd be a bad idea to take her out with us." The doctor raised a finger but I cut her off. "You're needed here as well, keeping the results impartial is vital. We can't have them throwing things away in case they look dangerous."
"Lance..."
"We'll be fine." I understood the hesitation, but it's not like we could bring the whole team. Maybe in the future after fears relax, but for now, we had to make do. "Besides, You know what they say: "too many cooks ruin the dish". I think three of the fluffy fellas is enough for now. Once we get the full crew, we can take out the bigger vessel. Today will be just cruising the shallows. An introduction."
"Right. On your more rustic vessel."
"Hey now," I said with false offense. "Orca II is more than ready to ride the waves. She's been doing just fine so far."
"Please do not sink on the first day. That would be far too embarrassing."
"Pfffft! If that happens, I'll just blame Atama. He's the ocean guy of the group."
"Lance..."
"I'm kidding! I'm kidding!" I laughed as I put my hands up. "There's no way I'd ever throw the Kiwi under the bus."
"Good." With a nod, the older woman turned to return to the base. She must be stressed with all that's going on today.
Not long after, when I'd finished packing, the three Venlil and Atama arrived.
"Shotgun!" Yelled Sant. Teaching him human lingo seemed to have paid off, much to the annoyance of the other human.
"Not happening! There is no way you're going to make me sit in the back!" The masked kiwi looked to me for help. "Right, friend?"
"I dunno man... The law of Shotgun is pretty cut and dry."
"Lance, buddy, pal."
"You won't turn your back on your traditions, right Lance?"
The two of them each looked to me for an answer. Though one of them wouldn't like what I said.
"Do we need a booster seat for a Venlil or is it fine without?"
"I do not see why I would need one."
"Perfect, then hop in! Atama, you figure out how the back's going to work."
"Betrayed by my own species..." The over dramatic man put the back of his hand against his head in a fake faint. "How will the rest of this program continue?"
I rolled my eyes as the four made their way into the truck. We'd be fine. I was certain.

"Lance, for what purpose does the little tree hanging under the mirror provide?" Glancing in the rearview mirror, I saw Halle staring at the air freshener. How the back seat was arranged amused me greatly. Atama had put the fluffy fella in the middle seat to separate himself from Torum. The big kiwi was sat behind Sant while the exterminator was put behind me.
"Makes the cabin smell like a pine tree... But you guys can't smell... And you don't know what a pine tree is... Right..." How does one describe the smell of a pine? That's well out of my area of expertise.
"Why do you want it to smell like a tree?"
"Cause I like trees?"
"Wouldn't you want your vehicle to smell like something you eat? If the "curry" dish Dr. Khan made the other night smells as good as it tasted, I'm sure I'd want to smell it more."
I tried to think of the best way to word my answer as we drove through the town. It had been a bit more lively than the day Atama and I walked through it. A few of the locals paused to look at my truck. I doubt they'd seen anything like it before. The most curious Venlil that gazed through the window quickly had their curiosity turn to fear.
A sharp bleat and a turned tail was the expected and seen result.
Moving my mind from that, I glanced back to Hale. "While that would not be bad, it's more that it would be too much. A nice subtle scent is preferable. Pine is just right."
"My van has a salty one in it." Atama piped up from the back.
"Of course you do."

It was interesting. Once we were past the village, town, settlement, or whatever it was called, I noticed something. Most buildings did not have a single window facing their star. The ones that did were on the ground level and quite large. I wonder what they are for.

With a charismatic creak, I opened the door and stepped onto the sand.
This was the second time I'd seen the alien ocean, and it was as beautiful as it was the last time. The red glow of the distant star gives the golden grains a light red tinge. I took a deep breath of the ocean air.
It was different than back home. I could smell a slight odor from the water, but it wasn't the strong salty smell of the Atlantic Ocean. It was more subdued. I made a mental note to bring back water to the lab for analysis.
"So this is the sea." Glancing over my shoulder I saw a nervous Hale. "It's not as scary as I thought it would be. It's almost... Pretty."
"What? Were you expecting to see evil predators try to attack us upon showing up?"
"... Maybe."
"Pfffft." The Venlil swatted his tail at me and my laughter. I moved around the back of the vehicle to see if anything got jostled while in transit. Nope, great! "Looks like everything is good to go. Atama, mind helping me bring this stuff to the boat?"
"You sure you don't want your new best friend to help?" The man had removed his mask and was giving me a hilarious pout.
Seeing none of the Venlil fainted at his face, I gripped the top of my mask and removed the thing. The warm sun on my face was a glorious thing. I was in high spirits at the prospect of not needing it for our time out. Hale, Sant and Torum seemed fine with us uncovered. A great sign.
"Don't be petty, Shark Boy, just grab the gear."
"Oh, so we're doing twenty-first century references now, are we?" The Kiwi smirked fiercely as he grabbed the duffel bag full of food. The man thought for a second before his toothy smile became vicious. "Careful Tiger King, you're acting pretty smug for someone about to be in my territory."
"Tiger King!?" I couldn't help it. A bit of my accent snuck out after hearing that. "All the wild and semi-crazy animal lovers out there n ya choose Tiger King!? That's right awful of ya."
The howling laughter told me how he thought of my astonishment. Grumbling to myself, I grabbed the snorkel gear. A last minute shipment from the capital as our gear wouldn't fit the Venlil frame. The goggles were ludicrous. They have Velcro around the eyes to create a water barrier. That was absurd.
Looking back, Torum was the last to follow our little group. The guy, along with Hale, eyed the coastline suspiciously. I shrugged and kept walking. They'd soon see the beauty of the sea.
Sant was up front and next to Atama. The two seemed to have become fast friends. The man informed me of the Venlil's confession about his condition. From what we gather, it's nothing to worry about. The guy seems to go against the grain in his interest in aquatic life and that it was something he'd kept hidden.
That was dumb. The Federation was dumb. The more I learned about how the aliens operated, the more questions I had. I'd talked with Hale and Aila about a few things. The Federation apparently had a heavy influence in all member worlds, including Venlil Prime until recently. The current governor was amazing in their wish to ally with despite their fear. It was because of her I was here in the first place.
I should send her a fruit basket.
After a while, we reached the edge of the water. My Buy-Boat was gently rocking in the water only a dozen meters out. Its hull allowed it to be comfortable in chest high water. Though, that'd be neck high or worse for the fluffy fellas.
Thankfully, Atama already started on the solution.
"Are you making another pool?" Sant looked on curiously as a small inflatable raft was filled with air. To his credit, it did look similar.
"It's a raft. Lance and I will tow you guys to the boat so you don't have to swim."
"That's very kind of you both."
"Don't worry about it. After all, can't have our speep freaking out before we even ship out!"
Once the craft was ready, Atama and I placed the last of the gear inside before gesturing to the Venlil. Sant, as expected, hopped in first. He was quickly followed by Hale. The final Venlil to get in was Torum. After seeing the others follow instructions, it seemed like he had no argument.
Just in case, we had them put on the PFDs. Safety first. With all Venlil and cargo safe and secure, Atama took the rip and pulled the craft into the water as I pushed from the back. "Here we go!" The trio gripped the hand holds as the buoyant rubber raft lifted away from solid ground. The mild waves splashed the three a little and Sant was the only one not to freak out a little.
I would admit, seeing Torum uncomfortable was mildly therapeutic.
Is that a bad thing to think? Probably.
The trip was quick and easy. Once at Orca II, the first thing onboard was the gear. Next was the hard part, the Venlil.
"So, there's two ways to do this." With Atama and I holding it still against the hull, the Venlil would have an easy ascent. "Option one: you guys grab the ladder and pull yourselves up. Opinion two: I stay here and hold the raft while Atama picks you up and onto the deck. Your choice."
"I can make it up on my own, predator." I rolled my eyes at the words from the resident grouch. Despite his rough exterior, I could see signs of fear on him. The constant movement of the raft, despite our efforts, made it a difficult surface to stand on.
Slowly, the darker Venlil got his footing on the raft and shakily made it to the ladder at the boat's rear. The Venlil made his way up halfway before he slipped slightly. Learning from the kiddie pool fiasco, I made sure to be close enough to help.
My hand snapped up and gripped the guy by the back of his float jacket. "I gotcha!" To his credit, the exterminator recovered quickly. The Venlil turned his head enough for his eye to lock with mine. There was a huff followed by a very slight nod. Quickly, Torum made his way onto the deck.
"How's it feel, Torum? You're the first alien onboard a human boat!" I should take a photo. To document the occasion.
From over the railing, he yelled back. "I don't like how wobbly it is!"
"You'll get your sea legs soon enough." I called back before I realized something. Turning to the other two I pulled at my soul patch. "We told y'all to have a light breakfast, right?
"No."
"You did not."
"Oops." The two's ears flicked about.
"What do you mean, "oops"?"
"It'll be fiiiiineeee." Hopefully. "Anyways, who's next?"
"I will!" Hale yelled out, still gripping onto the raft. His tail was even holding onto one of the hand grips Torum vacated.
"Atta boy, Hale!" I jerked my head to gesture for him to walk over.
Slowly, and on all fours, the overly fluffy Venlil approached the edge of the raft. His slow and steady approach let him make it up to the top without slipping. He was less elegant than Torum as he slid his body over the railing where he landed with a thud.
"I'm okay!"
Sant did better than the other two. He too was a bit shaky on the moving platform to grab the moving ladder. The dark Venlil made his way up without issue, leaving just Atama and I in the drink. "This is an interesting craft. I have never imagined stepping onto anything like this."
Once the final Venlil was onboard, Atama told me to head up and he'd deal with the float. I thanked the man as I hauled myself up. Once on the boat myself, I saw a grand sight. Hale was next to Torum, each clutching onto the exterior of the cabin. Both have a hand on the circular emergency float. Sant however, was peeking inside the cabin. I got my holopad out to quickly snap a photo.
"First aliens on a human seafaring vessel. David'll love this."
Moments later, Atama walked past me, inflatable raft folded under his arm. Once it was stowed away, he walked past Sant and into the cabin. Captain Atama was now in his element as I observed him getting the motor started.
"This has surprisingly modern equipment for such an antiquated vessel. Sonar, depth gauge, wind meter, GPS, EPIRB, and a fish finder!" The Kiwi looked up from the helm in shock. "How much money did you put into this thing!?"
"I only paid for the new paint for the name, ol David from back home footed the rest. I told you, he does research in the Chesapeake, he put all'a this in for that."
"Incredible."
"Lance, Atama." The two of us turned to see Sant in the doorway. "Is everything set?"
I grinned toothlessly to the guy and pointed below us. "You hear the hum of the engine? All that's left is to raise anchor and get going. Atama?"
"Aye aye!" A flipped lever was all it took for the automatic anchor winch to start. Not even a minute later, the anchor was stowed and the engines were going.
I made my way to the bow as we pushed away from the shore. It was a grand sight. The undiscovered mysteries of this blue horizon were limitless. I pinched myself to make sure it was all real.
"Why did you do that?" I jumped a little at the sudden voice. The soft feet of Hale seemed to have been able to sneak up on me. He was hanging out by the mast.
"It's a sort of human ritual." I pinched myself once more to show him. "To make sure we're not dreaming. A small sharp pain proves what we're witnessing is real."
"And you think you're dreaming now?"
"Oh, no." I said, waving my hand. "It's just a silly thing is human do. I know this is real life. Anyways, come over to the bow, it's safe, I promise."
The Venlil seemed pretty secure in his grip on the mast. But even so, he took a small step forward. "You won't let me fall?"
"Never." And with that a native of Venlil Prime joined me to watch the waves break against the hull as we cruised through uncharted waters. His tail wrapped around my arm as he tightly gripped the railing. No matter what we found today. This would be a memory I'd hold onto forever.

It's here! The sea!
Not pictured in the POV is Torum on all fours not enjoying his time on board. He then snaps up once Hale gets up and pretends nothing was wrong.
I'm on vacation in Florida for a week, so prooooobably not going to write a lot, but we'll see. I hope you all enjoyed the chapter!
