2024.05.15 17:55 ichuck1984 GE and Toshiba Dehumidifiers

Hi all,
I have 2 dehumidifiers that have crapped out in the past few years. I am just curious if there is anything more I can do to troubleshoot them before finally tossing. Both turn on and move air. I just bought a new one but I figure I have a few weeks to return if I potentially tinker and fix one of these if there is any hope here. Here are the model numbers-
GE ADEL50LYL1
The GE produces water but it can't get the humidity down past about 60% even after hours/days of running. It used to hold the basement at 45% with no problem. I am assuming it is a refrigerant problem. Nothing ices up though, which I would expect with low refrigerant. Maybe it is just low enough to not work right. I can feel the compressor kick on and it will fill the bucket after a few days but the humidity never really drops more than a few percent.
Toshiba TDDP5013ES2
I replaced the run capacitor yesterday and the air coming out gets cool but it still doesn't have a drop of water in the bucket after almost 24 hours of running in a basement with 65% humidity. There's a small dribble of water that runs out whenever I open the screw cap for the hose attachment. I can feel the compressor kick on, so apparently this one had both the capacitor and refrigerant fail after a year. What a piece of garbage. Dead after 1 summer.
Any hope of salvaging either one? These symptoms appear to be pretty common online and the fact that most of the manufacturers only have a 1 year warranty tells me that they probably don't think much of their products either. Other thoughts?

2024.05.15 12:34 JG98 A detailed look at the possible origins of Panjabi folk song 'Jugni'.

The history of the Panjabi folk song "Jugni" is a captivating blend of storytelling, spiritual yearning, and a touch of mystery. Unlike a single song, "Jugni" represents a narrative style deeply embedded in Panjabi folk music for centuries. The word itself translates to "firefly" and is also used to describe a free-spirited woman. This symbolism reflects the multifaceted nature of Jugni performances.
The most widely accepted view suggests Jugni wasn't a specific song but a storytelling method used by Panjabi folk singers. It's likely that the themes explored in Jugni narratives ranged from everyday life experiences to spiritual reflections.
There's a theory suggesting a specific origin point around 1908, with folk singers Bishna and Manda credited for its creation. Both men hailed from the Majha region. According to a local lore, Manda (real name Mohammad) was a Muslim Mirasi from Hasanpur, Amritsar, while Bishna belonged to a Jatt family from the Kasur-Patti region. Their repertoire consisted mainly of traditional folk songs like Mirza and Tappe.
This theory behind Jugni's birth is interesting. It is said that around 1908, to celebrate the 50th year (golden jubilee) of Queen Victoria on the throne, a ceremonial flame traveled across British-ruled India, reaching every major city and district headquarters. Bishna and Manda, known for their stage performances, followed the flame wherever it went.
There's a discrepancy in how the word "Jugni" came about, but generally it's claimed that illiterate Bishna and Manda mispronounced "Jubilee" as "Jugni." Capitalizing on the festivities, Bishna and Manda incorporated the "Jugni" (or Jubilee) flame into their performances. They sang self-composed verses about the flame, accompanying themselves on traditional instruments like the Dhad and King. These catchy verses, referencing specific cities and villages, quickly gained popularity, inspiring others to create their own Jugni verses.
Their original 'Jugni-verse' was presumably: "Jugni jaa varhi Majithe, koi rann na chakki peethe, Putt gabhru mulak vich maare, rovan akhiyan par bulh si seete, Piir mereya oye Jugni ayi aa, ehnan kehrhi jot jagaee aa"
This 'Jugni's poetic style and versification later became a traditional method and started taking much more in it's clasp but the beginning of 'Jugni' always remained in some city or place:
"Jugni jaa varhi Ludhiane, Uhnun pai ge anne kaane, Maarn mukkian mangan daane, Piir mereya oye! Jugni kehndi aa, Jehrhi naam Ali da laindi aa"
As the "Jugni" flame traveled, Bishna and Manda's fame grew. However, the era was marked by public discontent towards British rule, including famines and oppression. This social unrest found its way into their Jugni verses, which often criticized the British Raj.
The popularity of these anti-colonial verses did not go unnoticed by the authorities. Bishna and Manda's performances were banned, forcing them to move their shows away from official festivities. Despite police intervention and crowd dispersal tactics, their revolutionary Jugni performances continued to inspire anti-British sentiment.
Tragically, their defiance ended with their arrest and torture by police in Gujranwala. They were reportedly buried in an unmarked grave, their voices silenced but their Jugni legacy living on in the hearts of the people. Both Bishna and Manda are said to have been around their 50s and unmarried, so it is said they died without heirs.
However, there are inconsistencies about this theory. Firstly, Queen Victoria's golden jubilee, which would be the most relevant jubilee for a celebration in 1908, actually occurred in 1887. Additionally, there's no historical record of a nationwide jubilee with a "Jugni" or "Jubilee" flame traveling across India for her coronation as Queen or Queen-Empress of the British Raj.
This discrepancy casts doubt on the accuracy of the story. It's possible that the details about the jubilee and the creation of Jugni are misremembered or embellished over time. Alternatively, there might have been a localized event around 1908 that involved some form of light or celebration, but it wouldn't have been the grand jubilee described in the story. It is possible that there was local events celebrating an end to the 1857 mutiny against British rule.
An alternative perspective comes from the acclaimed Panjabi folk singer Alam Lohar. He claimed to have coined the term "Jugni" inspired by Sufi poetry, and is credited with popularizing a specific style of Jugni singing. In his renditions, Jugni became a vehicle for expressing spiritual themes, often referencing God with terms like "saeen".
Lohar's own journey with Jugni began during his early performances in the 1930s, pre-dating the partition of Panjab. As a child prodigy, he sang Jugni extensively during this time. Unfortunately, limited recording facilities in British India prevented many of these early performances from being captured.
However, later in his career, Lohar released an LP record titled "Jugni" which became a huge success, achieving gold disc status in 1965. He recorded numerous variations of Jugni throughout his career, and some of these recordings are still available on LP records, black and white TV footage, and even YouTube.
Lohar's influence extends well beyond himself. Singers worldwide, including his son Arif Lohar, have been deeply inspired by his renditions of Jugni.
The passage also offers some interesting background on the word "Jugni" itself. It mentions a theory that Lohar might have been influenced by encountering the term in Sufi writings. Additionally, "Jugni" is noted to be a traditional Muslim prayer tool (Tasbih) and an ornament worn by Panjabi women. However, the connection between these uses of "Jugni" and the musical genre wasn't explicitly explained by Lohar.
Lohar's claim is contested by other Panjabi artists. They argue that Jugni existed well before him. This viewpoint strengthens the idea of Jugni being a long-standing narrative tradition.
Despite the debate on its exact origin, some aspects of Jugni's history are clear. It's an established Panjabi folk narrative style, likely referring to fireflies or a free spirit. Alam Lohar undeniably popularized a particular style of Jugni focused on spiritual themes. Renditions of Jugni have been made by many artists including Arif Lohar, Saleem Javed, Asa Singh Mastana, Surinder Kaur, Gurmeet Bawa, Kuldip Manak, Gurdas Mann, Harbhajan Mann, Rabbi Shergill, Malkit Singh, Babbu Mann, Diljit Dosanjh, Bilal Saeed, etc.
In conclusion, Jugni's history is a testament to the enduring power of Panjabi folk traditions. While its exact beginnings might be debated, Jugni's ability to capture the essence of a free spirit and the yearning for the divine continues to resonate with audiences.

My computer was overheating and shutting off randomly for a week when playing games (apex legends/sunkenland and watching twitch). It's under warranty so I took it in. Before I took it in, I ran software to monitor the Temps. All of my fans were running. 3 in the front. 3 on the water cooler. One in the back.
They ran the games and said nothing was wrong. Said they updated drivers. He also said "100 C is within normal temp range for a 12th Gen i9. " which doesn't make sense to me because its in the red. My brother compare it to "Lol I mean I guess you can rev your car up to redline and it's still in spec too".
They reseated my graphics card and I asked them to put fresh thermal paste in.
If it continues to overheat what would be the issue? Is 70-80C a normal range when running games and media? Because it was jumping to 90-100c for the CPU. The computer is only 10 months old.

USD falters ahead of US CPI, ASX set to track Wall Street higher? Asian Open May 15, 2024
The USD was weaker despite higher producer prices, as traders placed greater emphasis on last month's figures being revised lower. And that now sees a 51% chance of a September Fed cut, according to Fed Fund futures.
By : Matt Simpson, Market Analyst
If there’s a case to be made that traders simply see what they want, it is visible in the US dollar’s reaction compared to headlines. Jerome Powell said that whilst he expects inflation to move lower, it likely won’t be as quickly as he expected. And US producer prices were hotter than expected on the eve of a Key CPI report, Yet traders took more notice of that fact that prior figures were revised lower. Perhaps I’m wrong to do so, but I would place greater emphasis on incoming data over downward revisions of past data. Yet with bond yields and the US dollar lower, who am I to argue.

  • The US dollar closed below 105 and US yields were broadly lower on bets the Fed could cut rates this year.
  • Fed fund futures now imply a 51% chance of a September rate cut, or 45.2% chance of one in November.
  • GBP/USD was the strongest major thanks to firmer economic data bringing doubt to a June rate cut by the BOE
  • A bullish engulfing day formed on NZD/USD, AUD/USD closed at a 6-day high
  • Gold recouped most of Monday’s losses to reveal demand around $2333
  • Wall Street indices pushed higher to see the S&P 500 trade just -0.34% from its all-time high, whilst the Nasdaq 100 is -0.77% below its record high

US dollar index (DXY) technical analysis:

We didn’t see the expected bounce on the US dollar, which instead has closed below 105 with an outside day and is now trying to hold above the 50-dy EMA. Yet I remain unconvinced prices will simply fall to my 104.50 target unless CPI data comes in very soft later today. RSI (2) is approaching oversold, and the 50-day EMA is likely to provide a level of support, at least initially.

BOE June cut appears less likely

UK data threw an inevitable spanner in the work for a potential June cut from the BOE, with earnings remaining relatively high at 6% (or 5.7% y/y including bonus, above 5.3% expected and unchanged from prior). The jobless claimant amount also fell to 8.9l (13.9k expected) and prior revised to -2.4k from 10.9k. -177 jobs were lost, but this was not as bad as the -215k consensus estimate. Still, BOE’s Chief Economist Pill said that it was “not unreasonable” to consider rate cuts over the summer, although it is unclear whether this refers to June or August. My bet August, and the rebound of GBP appears to back this up.

US-China trade war heating up one more

Shots have been fired by the Whitehouse after they unveiled steeper of tariffs on China, which include EV batteries, medical products and computer chips. EV duties have quadrupled from 5% to 100% and semiconductors have been doubled to 50%. Clearly this is a ploy to look tough on China in the name of in the name of American jobs in the lead up to the elections. Yet it is worth pointing out these inflationary policies could become an own goal and spark a fresh trade war. As expected, China were quick to vow retaliation and take measures to defend its interests.

ASX 200 technical analysis:

  • The ASX 200 cash index formed a relatively small bearish outside / engulfing day as it retraced against last week’s bullish range expansion
  • Given Wall Street remains supported and SPI futures were higher overnight, I suspect the cash index is building up for another leg higher
  • SPI 200 futures are on track for a bullish engulfing day, and prices have been coiling up within a small symmetrical triangle pattern which assumes a bullish breakout
  • The 1-hour chart shows a volume cluster around 7780, so any low-volatility retracements towards the 7772 low could be appealing to bullish swing traders
  • RSI (2) is overbought, hence the bias for an initial retracement lower before the anticipated breakout occurs
  • A break above 7800 assumes bullish continuation, and brings the 7580 high into focus, below the 7866 high-volume node

2024.05.14 18:46 PsychoKiller Multiple diamond contractors recommending against Mitsubishi due to cost. How is LG RED for ducted heat pump?

I live in Massachusetts and have a ducted Mutsubishi Hyper-heat system that works great. It was installed a few months ago by a great contractor.
Now my partner's parents in Rhode Island want to upgrade their system because their 25 year old gas boiler is on it's last legs and the central air is pretty old as well.
They have two separate ducted systems that are fed with central air in the summer and a hydro loop from the gas boiler for heating. I had a few contractors come by to give proposals - each one being Mitsubishi Diamond. Each one is recommending to not do Mitsubishi because they said they are pricing themselves out of the market and parts are getting harder to get. The contractor that we liked the most is recommending LG RED with 12 year parts and 1 year labor warranty. They are a very reputable company. The other companies were pushing Samsung and GE, but overall I trust the company recommending LG the most for both price and how diligent they were with their inspection and proposal.
I know that the install matters most and I trust this company, but can't find a lot of info about people's experience with LG RED. Note that this is in New England and will not have a back-up heat source, but it seems to be on par with Mitsubishi Hyper-heat.
Does anybody have experience with LG RED? Also, the existing ducting was obviously sized for a higher static pressure system. Each company said that they will re-do some of the ducting, but a lot of it is fine. How can I make sure this is done correctly?

2024.05.14 14:30 irohwisdom Laptop screen issues

My laptop screen intermittently either becomes a mirage of vertical color bands for a few seconds to a minute or the display splits and duplicates the bottom third of the screen, so that I see three taskbars and the bottom most part of my content. I don't have a picture of the latter yet, will edit if I can get that soon. In both cases it will snap back to normal eventually. Rebooting seems to help, but the issue comes back after a few hours.
Laptop is an MSI GS66 Stealth. It has a GeForce RTX 3070 laptop GPU with drivers updated from GeForce Experience.
Anyone have any ideas on what's happening here? Unfortunately its out of warranty, so I'd like try and repair myself if possible before taking into a repair shop.

Tesla’s experience in large-scale battery production and automotive integration can complement QuantumScape’s cutting-edge technological advancements, resulting in a mutually beneficial partnership.
  3. Enhanced Market Position: A partnership with QuantumScape could reinforce Tesla’s market position as a leader in EV technology. It would signal to consumers and investors that Tesla is committed to staying at the forefront of innovation, thereby maintaining its competitive edge.
  4. Improved Financial Performance: Embracing solid-state technology through a partnership could enhance Tesla’s financial performance in the long term. Superior battery technology would likely lead to increased sales, reduced warranty costs due to improved battery lifespan, and potential cost savings from more efficient production processes.
In conclusion, Tesla stands at a crossroads in its journey of innovation. Ignoring the potential of solid-state battery technology could have far-reaching consequences, from losing its competitive edge to eroding market share and damaging its reputation as a technological leader. However, by strategically partnering with QuantumScape, Tesla has the opportunity to embrace this revolutionary technology, ensuring it remains at the forefront of the EV market.
Such a partnership could accelerate the development and deployment of solid-state batteries, bolster Tesla’s market position, and enhance its financial performance. The road ahead is fraught with challenges, but with the right strategic moves, Tesla can continue to lead the charge in the electric vehicle revolution, ensuring a sustainable and technologically advanced future.

2024.05.14 04:03 Current_Can_3715 Are we missing something or does this make sense, new Model Y with promotional rate

A little background, we have been saving and were planning to purchase a new car, preferably EV, closer to EOY beginning of next year. We were mainly looking at the secondary market and were leaning towards a used Model 3. Going this route, we would forgo the tax credit because most cars that met my mileage and price range didn't qualify. We were okay with this because we would be spending less than new with a tax credit at ~$37k and saving ~$5k paying in cash.
Now Tesla is offering a promotional 1% interest rate on new Model Y orders through the end of May. Meaning we would qualify for the tax credit but would have to carry a loan for 36 to 72 months. After the credit the price is ~$43k.
We are aware of hidden costs like getting a charger installed and insurance rates. Electricity would be lower than gas prices in our area. Are there any other gotchas to consider? The new car seems more appealing because it's new and around the same price we were going to pay otherwise. No mileage, longer warranty, no previous owner cosmetic issues. Downside is having to carry the loan and paying that difference we planned to save. However, it does present the option to invest some of the capital now that would have been used to buy used in the future.
Are we missing something or is the new car a terrible, horrible, no good mistake?
Also for those wondering, we currently drive a 2005 Ford Focus, has been a great car but is starting to show its age. We are under the 300k threshold for the credit so should be good. Only other liability we have is the 3% mortgage. Tax advantaged accounts max, emergency funds funded.

US dollar stabilises ahead of Powell, PPI, USD/JPY eyes 157: Asian Open May 14, 2024
The US dollar has regained its footing heading into a Powell speech and US PPI report, whilst USD/JPY looks set to break resistance and head for 157.
By : Matt Simpson, Market Analyst
The US dollar index traded in a tight range during a relatively quiet session on Monday and held above 105 for a second day. This follows on from a small bullish inside week to shows stability has been found after the prior bearish engulfing week temporarily slammed prices below 105.

Traders like binary outcomes as it can provide clarity for expectations and cleaner trends. Yet the pause of the dollar's demise may be attributed to the fact that traders are grappling with higher-for-longer rates alongside hopes of cuts.

Taking NFP as an example, perhaps traders were too quick to price in cuts given job growth is still knocking out 6-figure gains and unemployment remains low by historical standards. Yet inflation expectations are higher, even if confidence is softer. Mixed data calls for a mixed response.

For the wheels to truly fall off of the US dollar, incoming data needs to point to disinflation, not just pockets of weakness here and there. Overall, I believe the US dollar has topped for now and that inflation will eventually behave. But we might see some US dollar upside before its next leg lower materialises.

The weekly chart shows a high-volume engulfing week ad three failed attempts to close above 106. Yet the small bullish inside week shows a hesitancy to break immediately lower, and the daily chart shows prices holding above 105. Furthermore, Friday’s NFP bearish engulfing day was on relatively low volume, meaning bears lacked conviction on the day. Therefore, my bias is for the US dollar to pop higher from here and potentially see a false break above Friday’s high, before bearish momentum returns and prices head for at least 104.50, the bullish trendline or Q3 open.

Economic events (times in AEST)

We have two key themes to watch for today, which revolve around the BOE and Fed. UK earnings and employment data could provide some last minute bets for whether the BOE will hint at a June cut at Thursday’s meeting, where hotter figures could diminish expectations of a dovish tone and potentially send GBP/USD higher. We also have a talk from the BOE’s Chief Economist Hew which will include an economic outlook, making it a key event. The attention will then shift to US producer prices, which could set the tone for the key CPI report released tomorrow, or the warm-up act for Jerome Powell’s speech later today.

The rise of USD/JPY is beginning to remind me of every stock-market rally hater miss out on. But like it or now, USD/JPY is rising, even if there is a growing concern the BOJ may intervene once more. But it has got this far, why not one final burst for 157?

A bullish trend is apparent on the 1-hour chart although prices have stalled just beneath monthly pivot point and key swing high (the third prominent leg lower). Perhaps we’ll see markets tease with a break of resistance today, which might provide some less-than-friendly price action and a pullback towards the 20 or 50-bar EMA. At which point dip buyers may be tempted to load up for the real break. But if we see a 1-hour close above resistance, bulls could seek to enter on lower timeframes (seek consolidation patterns) with a view on targeting the high-volume node or 157 handle.

2024.05.13 19:25 wond3rbred [Landlord - US - OH] Inherited Tenant - Washer/Dryer

Have a unit that has an inherited tenant in the property currently on a month to month lease. I do not typically provide a washedryer in my units, but unfortunately this stack GE is mine. Considered repairing, but the repair is almost the cost of a replacement unit and I am hesitant to go that route. Currently planning to replace the washer - dryer.
Would you consider a lease addendum which provides this new washer dryer as a convenience? Can’t prove any misuse and that may not be the case, but this washer is only about 2 years old, 1 yr out of warranty and looks like it’s been put through the wringer. I’d prefer not to be on the hook for this again before getting this place rehabbed.
