2024.06.07 08:04 Dimetro_Sparks You've seen me do Kong, now it's Godzilla's turn!
Same response as always! Enjoy the show! Though I think you'll all quite like this, especially since a fan-favorite makes a return here! (Fair warning, as usual, it's very long) submitted by Dimetro_Sparks to Monsterverse [link] [comments] We start off with the Legendary and Warner Bros. logos, before a haunting children's choir blares out as the black cuts to a ruined city, filled with debris, smoke and fires about, ruins all around as many human bodies and wrecked buildings are scattered around. As the "screen" takes a view of the carnage, the sounds of what sounds like a child screaming gradually becomes louder. The "screen" gets more distorted as it enters into a large fog, getting more shaky and shrouded in darkness, before the pure darkness is broken by a pair of red eyes as a harrowing roar, which sounds like a high-pitched alien scream rings out. White lights flash all over the place, and we see Godzilla's eye opening, as whatever epic opening your mind makes happens, before the title seeps in like the gas following it. The film follows Dr. Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler), having been alerted by "yet another report of Godzilla on the move". He enters a Monarch base of operations in Puerto Rico, asking what's the deal with Godzilla, with Dr. Ilene Chen (Zhang Ziyi) reporting that the King of the Monsters has changed locations yet again, from the Polynesian Islands to Kazakhstan, seemingly rapidly changing locations in a short period of time for whatever reason. Dr. Rick Stanton (Bradley Whitford) snarked that the G-Man was taking a world tour, and was received just as well as you'd expect. Dr. Sam Coleman (Thomas Middleditch) confirmed that he's choosing human civilizations specifically, and wondered if maybe Godzilla was sick of humanity's crap, but Mark retorted that there's no way he's acting out like this without a good reason (Yes, Mark has increased braincells since the Mechagodzilla Incident in 2024). Just then, he gets a call from his daughter, Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown). Speaking of Madison, she was working at a Monarch site in Venezuela, wanting to understand more of the Titans in the world (and maybe slightly follow her father's footsteps ever since Mark finally treats her like she's a grown woman). Anyways, she asks her father if he's gotten the alert of Godzilla, and Mark confirms. Madison then sent her father a camera from an Outpost in Hawaii, where Godzilla looks to be looking around, and using his claws to dig through buildings and even the mountains and the ground. Mark, and the rest of the Monarch Top Brass after showing it to them, comes to the conclusion that he's searching for something. For what exactly, it's unclear. But whatever he's searching for, it's agreed that it is extremely dangerous if it caught the King's attention. Mark asks his daughter to see if there is more information about Godzilla's personality change as Monarch sets off to Kazakhstan to evacuate the people, and she agrees. Madison calls a friend of hers situated in Germany, young genius Neil Trott (Brady Noon), who was in the middle of tinkering with high-end technology for monitoring Godzilla, and explains the situation. Neil was pretty excited to use his stuff to scour out what could be irritating Godzilla, and gets to work, the "camera" being Neil's, making it look like a first-person perspective, recording them and sending the results to Madison. Back with Monarch, the team has landed in Kazakhstan, where Godzilla was going out of control as the citizens were being evacuated. The Kazakhstan army were deployed to stop him from destroying any more of their city, but it was in vain as the G-Man wiped the floor with their tanks and fighter jets. Mark briefly locked eyes with Godzilla as the King backed out into the waters, and saw, among other emotions, one he never expected to see: Fear. Back to Neil and his "first person camera perspective", it starts to turn to dusk as he gets to around three blocks, when his scanner goes haywire as it leads him to an abandoned tunnel… or so he thought. Neil enters, and finds a weird, grey nacreous substance… before he finds himself getting ambushed by a group of thugs, knocking him out. Cut back to Monarch, as everyone in base is on edge, frantically searching for where Godzilla could make landfall next. It's gotten so bad, that Madison herself came to base to help with the ongoing and escalating problem. Until Coleman finds Godzilla's next target: Germany. Madison panics, and calls Neil to warn him, but he's not responding. Cut back to Neil, who awakens and finds himself tied to a chair in a knot, and stares up at his captors, who appear to have their own base. The leader (Theo James) explained everything to Neil. The leader was originally a normal man, living with his family, and doting on his daughter, until 2024, in Mechagodzilla's short reign of terror. The Leader's family was relaxing in Pensacola, Florida at the time, when Godzilla attacked the APEX Base there. While the Leader and his wife survived, their daughter… sadly didn't. Ever since, he has been plotting a way to destroy the King for revenge, and has allied himself with three other people who have lost their families and their (not literal) lives to Titans, and have found a solution in the form of their creation: The grey nacreous substance. Using it, it will enter a Titan's bloodstream, rapidly destroy the Titan's cells, kill them, and multiply itself with each Titan it kills. And they plan to sic it on Neil, for finding out about their secret. As Neil panics and struggles to break free before the substance devours him, the tunnels blow open as Godzilla's Atomic Breath slices through the area, still in his searching rampage and stomping around Berlin a few miles away. The collapsing tunnels buried the gang alive, but Neil takes the opportunity to get his things, and get the hell out of there. He turns around to grab the grey substance, but does a double take when it vanishes with no trace. Back with Monarch, as the team has landed in Germany, Madison is searching the ruins, begging Neil to be alive, before he spots her, to her relief. Neil reported everything to Monarch, including the grey substance, and during Stanton's question of what a jar of living Play-Doh is gonna do to them, what it's capable of. This substance sees itself as top priority, and a ground team was immediately sent out to find it, with help from the German military to evacuate the injured and the citizens. Unbeknownst to them, as the evacuation is underway, a young British boy named Lloyd Abbott (Tristan Ruggeri) was separated from his parents and found himself lost in the ruins of Germany. Lloyd was scared as he calls out to his mother and wanders Germany, until he spotted something: The grey nacreous substance, near what looked like some magenta particles and glowing magenta with a hint of gold. Lloyd was curious, and for whatever reason, felt compelled to go it, like it was calling to him, and it surprisingly calmed him down. He got to it and stared at it for a few seconds, but then the substance let out a tentacle and wrapped itself around Lloyd's wrist. As Lloyd panicked, more tentacles wrapped itself around his body and dragged him closer to itself as the substance wrapped itself around him and absorbing his body. Lloyd let out a long scream of terror, echoing throughout the abandoned streets of Germany, before it takes over his head, and his scream starts getting lower, longer and distorted before stopping. As dusk fully awakens for the humans, their search was unsuccessful as the ground team came up with nothing, with both Madison and Mark concluding that it must have been moved or destroyed when Godzilla attacked the city. Madison suggested the possibility of the substance being what Godzilla's so pissed off about. Mark can't help but admit that it does have some merit, especially after learning what it can do to a Titan, but they can't rule out all possibilities of a world-class Titan threat, something Madison agrees with (you know, because she theorized that same thing with Mechagodzilla in 2024?). Suddenly, an alarm goes off, alerting them of major Titan activity in Guatemala. Which also happens to be where Godzilla was headed next, so they decided to trail after him. In Guatemala, just as the alarm sounds off, we see Behemoth lumbering about in the coast and its forests, when he stopped for a drink. Unaware of the rippling of the water and whatever was disturbing it coming closer… Behemoth stopped drinking as he looks around the ocean for a while, before a grey colored gas with golden tints surrounds the area. He turns around to investigate… and something erupted out of the water and grabbed Behemoth, dragging him into the water and assaulting the mammalian Titan as he is unable to fight back properly. Behemoth slammed a claw onto his assailant, but it barely fazed it, and in fact, looked like it phased through the creature. Just as Behemoth was about to have its throat slammed down by it, Amhuluk charges in and throws it off. Behemoth stares in what looked like shock as Amhuluk basically helped him up to his feet. Both Titans were ready to combat the threat as the creature leaped out and struck Amhuluk, with the mere contact shockingly burning and decaying Amhuluk's wood body, before lunging at the two roaring Titans. Back to Godzilla and the humans, who have just made landfall on Guatemala, they stopped to stare in shock as Behemoth and Amhuluk were lying on the beaches, writhing in agony as they looked like they were scared, while a grey gas with golden tints surrounds the area, and the surrounding earth around them looked like it was dry and sucked of life, a major shock to both King of the Monsters and humanity alike. Both of them suddenly took off in separate directions. Godzilla suddenly shakes his head in pain as he gains that same vision from the beginning, and turns to find the creature, searching Rio de Janeiro, where he last brawled with the Skar King and Shimo. Chen remarks that whatever attacked Behemoth and Amhuluk, it was powerful, fast, and must be terrifying. Stanton quipped that maybe it could break Usain Bolt's record and gain a new spot in World Wrestling. Coleman looks over and finds trails of the creature: a grey nacreous substance. This confirms both Madison's and Mark's theories, that it was a combination of both threats attacking the world. Godzilla finally locks on to his target. He doesn't know what it is, only that it's ridiculously fast underwater, managed to beat and terrify both Behemoth and Amhuluk, shockingly managed to convince them to work together, and most importantly, was draining the environment of its natural resources, a major no-no for the King. Now he's finally got it where he wanted it. Using all his energy to rocket down the ocean, he zoomed to where it attacked next: Lindi, Tanzania. The monster was attacking the cities in a rage, and in the process was siphoning the energy of the world, until it got an Atomic Breath to the back of its head. Godzilla furiously walked up and roared at the monster, who turned its head around to reveal itself as the humans finally gets a good look at its identity. It's Hedorah. It looked like a grey misshapen Shimo with wide unblinking red eyes and covered in the grey nacreous substance all over. Hedorah roared as Godzilla interrupted its harvesting of the resources, and a fearsome brawl ensued. Godzilla fought well, but none of his usual attacks were doing anything to Hedorah, his claws and tail only inconveniencing Hedorah thanks to his substance. Even his Atomic Breath, which seemed to wound it, was useless due to the substance regenerating the injuries at a ludicrous speed. Hedorah then decided Godzilla had his fun long enough, now it was his turn. He attacked the King, his extending arms tossing and turning Godzilla around. But that wasn't what was shocking. It was the fact that Hedorah began glowing red as it was siphoning energy from Godzilla into himself. Godzilla was screaming in pain as he charged up an Atomic Breath and blasted it into Hedorah's face to get him off, but it was too late. Hedorah now has the ability to let out a beam of his own, and uses his new "Ion Roar" to push Godzilla back a considerable distance. Red energy pulses through Godzilla as Hedorah expels four barbed tentacles from his back, glowing gold and injects three of them into Godzilla, who roars in pain, just for his tail to smack the fourth one away… and whip the aircraft carrying Monarch, injecting the surrounding area into a thick grey fog. It was darkness for Mark for a few seconds, before he finds himself in the ruins of San Francisco, all the way back in 2014. The place was devoid of any life as he looks around the burning city. He then turns around at a sound, and comes face to face with his late son Andrew (Bentley Storteboom). As Mark stares in disbelief as to what was going on, Andrew stares wordlessly. Lights flash as Mark's vision distorts, and he is now in the ruins of Boston, in 2019. Mark comes face to face with the (horrifically burned) visage of his ex-wife, Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), who is once again preaching about her whole "release the Titans to take back what's their's" spiel. As Mark looks around this living nightmare, Andrew appears, lifts Mark's eyes up to a light in the sky, and gently closes his father's eyes. When Mark opens them, he was in a new location, one not his own, and realizes everyone present was looking at him in shock and horror. Madison shakily asked if that was what was going through his mind the whole time on those two days, and Mark realized that whatever Hedorah did, it was bringing back terrible memories, and everyone was audience to it. We are treated to various traumatic experiences of the other Monarch personnel, including Madison's terror in Boston's battle and her trauma of King Ghidorah, Chen's visions of Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and of his sacrifice, and one of Mothra's death psychically linked to her, and most shockingly, Rick's losses throughout his life, such as his father, his son, his wife, and his beliefs that he will die alone and unloved. The trips down memory street gets cut off by an incessant beeping, which snaps everybody out of the visions, and Coleman reveals that Godzilla's vitals are fluctuating at an astonishing rate, his emotions, especially fear, rising while his radiation levels are decreasing, and the humans (and us) see the event that was alluded to, but never seen before until now: The Great Titan War. We see Godzilla in a much different Earth, battling the Skar King's army, only for it to reach that fateful moment when the Great Apes managed to pin him down and clamp his jaws, before the Skar King himself menacingly strolls over, grinning sadistically, wielding a sharp weapon made from a Titan, before slamming it down on Godzilla. Before it could, the memory dispersed as Godzilla roared and sent out a full-power Atomic Breath to Hedorah's face. It got the monster off of him, but Hedorah got what he wanted absorbing Godzilla's radiation, and promptly took off, his whole body glowing red and magenta. Everybody needed a moment to take in the smorgasbord of stuff that went down just down. Mark needed to find a way to defeat Hedorah, and asked for any suggestions from Monarch. Stanton stated in an extremely cold voice: "Here's one. Kill that abomination of nature, and make sure it dies slowly." Stanton now DESPISED Hedorah with every fiber of his being, no doubt due to unintentionally exposing his traumatic past. Their discussion gets cut off when they hear one of their equipment beeping rapidly, showing Godzilla lying weakly on the ground, his radiation levels dropping significantly. Their veterinarians found a foreign pathogenic substance in Godzilla's system, depriving him of his radiation and weakening him, a virus borne from Hedorah. Everybody at Monarch worked ASAP to treat Godzilla, and all of them seem to be going too slowly for their comfort, until Coleman suggested one possible solution: They inject pure radiation from the Hollow Earth's solar winds. Having already collected samples thanks to the Hollow Earth team, they injected the solutions into Godzilla. The act worked, and Godzilla immediately got up and swam off to settle this crisis with Hedorah once and for all. Mark told Coleman to remind him to give him a raise for this. Monarch follows Godzilla in the case he needed another dose of radiation to get back into the fight. It was there that their sensors reported that Godzilla was making a beeline to Europe again. In a matter of moments, Godzilla made landfall in London, England. The Monarch team was forced to land their aircraft when a thick, heavy fog obscures their vision and their sensors. Thanks to Hedorah's abilities, London is more of a ghost town than anything. What follows is a shift in the camera to a "first-person" approach as we are treated to shadows and silhouettes among the smoke and fog, as paranoia increases, and the occasional Londoners suffering from Hedorah's hallucinogenic smog, with one poor soul even looking and feeling like he's fused into a Godzilla suit and is acting more feral and deranged. Luckily, Neil and Madison's genre savviness allowed them to not breathe in the gas with masks they brought and helped snap out the others. Finally, Godzilla roars as he spots Hedorah's resting place, with the Smog Monster himself undergoing a major transformation thanks to Godzilla's DNA, evolving until he breaks out into his final form, which resembles a giant Anomalocaris now with both of his large red unblinking eyes on stalks, and has the forelimbs of a praying mantis, all while his four tentacles are in full display. The two Titans charge at one another. The brawl in London commenced as the two Titans began throwing punches, slashes, bites, and threw the other around during the battle (fortunately for us, sparing Big Ben and other landmarks). It was going well for Godzilla now that the radiation had revitalized him, and Hedorah's new form meant he was actually landing solid hits on his foe, however tough his exoskeleton is. In fact, their battle was dispersing the gas, however slightly, helping Madison and Neil on the ground snap out the others from their horror show. However, just as it was going great, Hedorah manages to gain the upper hand by hiding in the fog and shadows of London, and using his deceptively strong tentacles to pin Godzilla's limbs while using his raptorial blades to slash and attack Godzilla's head, giving him virtually no chance to use his Atomic Breath. Hedorah then started using his tentacles and his mandibles' "Soul Siphon" to start absorbing Godzilla's radiation. This prompted the humans to start shooting at Hedorah with everything they have, which turns his attention away from Godzilla to swat the annoying humans with his Ion Roar. Godzilla managed to kick Hedorah off of him, but the "virus" began spreading more rapidly, weakening his capabilities. Godzilla was losing hard against the Smog Monster, as Hedorah now uses his new physical advantage to toss around the discombobulated Godzilla, every attack the King dishes out, met with a nasty counterattack. Hedorah tosses Godzilla into the River Thames, and lunges on top of him, and begins absorbing Godzilla's radiation unimpeded, seeing as Godzilla's getting too weak to properly fight back, and the humans have exhausted their weapons. As Godzilla's struggles fade away, his life moments starts flashing before his eyes, from his birth in ancient Madagascar, to the Titan War, battling the MUTOs, MUTO Prime, King Ghidorah, Kong, the Skar King and Shimo, and countless others. This causes Godzilla to regain his strength and lets out a supercharged Atomic Breath to Hedorah's face. The humans were in shock, scanners reading that the Hollow Earth's radiation began actively combating Hedorah's virus. Godzilla begins furiously beating down Hedorah as he punches, claws and slams the Smog Monster around. But Hedorah kept tanking the hits, up until he decided that enough was enough, and used his tail to anchor himself to the King's chest and drove his tentacles into Godzilla's mouth and begins absorbing his radiation. Hedorah's absorption of the Hollow Earth radiation causes his powers to amplify and absorb more radiation. Godzilla was struggling to breathe, until his dorsal plates begin glowing. Godzilla keeps his mouth open, but something extraordinary happens: His glowing dorsal plates begin flashing red, glowing more intensely until they stay red. Godzilla's entire being glows red and his jaws explode pure energy as he releases none other than the Spiral Heat Ray, directly into Hedorah's mouth. The force was strong enough to lift Hedorah off of the ground and drilled straight through his head. The intense heat of the Spiral Heat Ray also solidifies Hedorah's body. Eventually, all those factors combined was enough to reduce Hedorah to ashes, as they scatter into the wind, in addition to clearing the fog from the skies of London. Godzilla roars in victory, his red body glowing brightly as the humans watch in awe, well, except for Stanton, who enjoyed Hedorah's death just a wee too much. Scans also reveal that, as a bonus, whatever Godzilla's new power-up acted as a fever for Hedorah's virus, completely ridding any trace of it in Godzilla's system. A few days later, the humans at Monarch, along with Neil were going over the circus that just happened and were glad to put things behind them, with Mark even commenting that showing what happened that day kind of help destress him. Until they got an alarm that Godzilla was in proximity. Turns out, he was just patrolling like he usually does, and after seeing nothing out of the ordinary, returns back to the Colosseum to take a long, well-deserved nap, the film ending on his closing his eye. |
2024.06.07 06:01 SHSLSaionjiStan In Defense/Analysis of Post-Atsushi Lucy pt. 1
❦ Introduction submitted by SHSLSaionjiStan to BungouStrayDogs [link] [comments] https://preview.redd.it/vl9kwttiq25d1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=9a676bfeaf4b76da781a0db140145c84b61ab5e5 Okay, so, I’ll be frank: as much as I aim to respect every opinion this fanbase has to offer (granted it’s well-informed and not hurting anyone), this particular take on Lucy’s character does kiiinda bug me. I’ve come across it – or some variation of it – a fair amount in my short time as a BSD fan (two years, give or take), and while I wouldn’t go so far as to call it the fandom consensus, judging by the comments’ upvote count – and, again, the frequency with which I see it repeated – I also wouldn’t consider it that unpopular. This, of course, leads me to my fair disclaimer: I have zero problems with the users in this screenshot, they’re cool; I’m only using their comments as a framework for my counterargument. In this defense/analysis, I’ll be doing my best to refute the argument(s) above through use of reasoning Just to clarify, the subject here is manga Lucy; anime Lucy is a whole other can of worms (giving Bones the stink eye). Please let me know if any links are broken/not working, and I’ll replace them ASAP! ❦ Section #1: Overview In all seriousness, though, is the criticism that the bulk of post-Atsushi Lucy’s panel time has been dedicated to her crush on him fair? In my eyes, yes and no. Let me put it this way: has a good chunk of her dialogue, decisions and overall story revolved around their relationship? Sure. “Almost exclusively” is hyperbolic, but when boiled down, there’s some truth to it. Here’s the thing, though: just because a female character has a romantically-coded dynamic with a male character (let alone a male main character) doesn’t automatically mean she’s been reduced to a personality-less love interest. I mean… y’all do realize that romance, one-sided or otherwise, doesn’t foreclose on the potential for, like… depth… right? /lh No, but really. Don’t get me wrong, personality-less love interests in fiction (particularly anime and manga) are absolutely a real and annoying pitfall, but sometimes I get the sense that fans (of any series – not singling BSD out here) will take one look at a female character with a crush and go, “Well, she’s in love, so there’s no way there’s good writing involved,” and that’s what I find a bit lame. Female desire, whether romantic or sexual, is demonized enough as is. Now, hold up. I’m not saying that criticizing a female character whom you perceive as falling into the PLI pitfall is sexist – not in the slightest. If anything, it’s anti-sexist. Still, I think it’s worth pointing out the less than charitable attitudes with which women who convey attraction are often approached, and how writing off a female character as a PLI by virtue of her having a crush – as though it were something inherently disempowering, something vapid – can play into that. Again, not pointing the finger at anyone, only underscoring what I feel is an implicit bias in how this criticism is sometimes leveled. I’d argue that AtsuLucy (the dynamic, not the ship) right off the bat either subverts or outright contradicts several PLI conventions. Lucy doesn’t love Atsushi by default because he’s the protagonist; the reason behind her attraction is earned by the narrative. She doesn’t idolize or suck up to him; she’s critical of his flaws and wishes to see him change. She doesn’t exist for the sake of his development; if anything, he prompts her development more so than the other way around. The typical tsundere formula isn’t followed to a tee, either; Lucy doesn’t bitch solely in compensation for her crush or to evoke a “hot-and-cold” character gimmick; she also bitches because she cares, and because she wants Atsushi to care, too. More on all of that soon. Anyway, my overall point is that maybe the focus of post-Atsushi Lucy’s character is mainly her relationship with him. But if said relationship doesn’t come at the expense of her personality and, ultimately, serves to bolster both of them as characters (which I’ll be arguing my case for), is that really a bad thing? ❦ Section #2: Wacky-Crazy™ Despite how elitist I’m probably coming off, I do actually think it’s valid to miss pre-Atsushi Lucy/wish she'd held onto her previous fruitcakery, and – all in all – I see where makers of the “female characters aren’t allowed to be wacky” argument are coming from. Male characters are generally given more leeway in that department – again, not just in BSD, but in fiction in general. Me personally, I’m all for wacky-crazy characterization, but only to the extent that it works in favor of the character in question. Constructive wacky-craziness, if you will. If we're talking purely women, take Yosano and Teruko (rip), for example. Those two have wacky and crazy in spades – and in both of their cases, I do think it works in their favors. Why? Because said wacky-craziness bears no relevance to their arcs. Keeping it as a constant trait isn’t something that would render them stagnant. Lucy, however, is a different story. Let me explain. The Lucy we meet at the beginning of the Guild arc is wacky, crazy and everything in between – a bonafide fruitcake, if I do say so myself. But sans a few pieces of dialogue, she’s – for all intents and purposes – style over substance. Entertaining? Definitely. Deep? Eh. Don't get me wrong, there are glimpses of a potentially deep character, but ultimately, they’re pushed to the wayside in favor of the fight. Her being an intimidating adversary against whom Atsushi and co must face off takes precedence over most else. To be clear, I don’t dislike pre-Atsushi Lucy or think she’s poorly-written. Not insofar as what she aims to achieve, anyway. I just think of her more as the outline – the bare bones – of a character than as a full-blown character, if that makes any sense. That hollow feeling may as well be the point. After all, her unhinged persona is fundamentally just that: a persona. A fake-it-’til-you-make-it type front she puts up in the hopes that it’ll help her embrace the role she’s been assigned. As she herself laments, there's no room for failure in the Guild, and that includes failure to play the part – this later lampshaded by Steinbeck. If we’re being honest, though, for as long as this front stays up, Lucy does a pretty shoddy job of maintaining it. At several points during her fight with Atsushi, such as when she bemoans her precarious standing in the Guild – it cracks. When Mori scares the living shit out of her, it cracks. And in the fight’s climax, when she begs Atsushi not to let go, you guessed it: it cracks. On top of being his way of proving that he deserves to live, Atsushi’s heroism stems from a desire to suppress his victimhood; to avoid being a victim by being a hero instead. Likewise, aside from being her way of belonging somewhere, Lucy’s villainy stemmed from a desire to suppress her victimhood; to avoid being a victim by being a villain instead. But that, too, cracked when she tattled to Atsushi about her past in the orphanage. By the time the fight is over, her façade is completely shattered, and she’s left crying in the street. Atsushi followed Mori’s advice nigh-perfectly: he fought until his opponent couldn’t anymore. It was legitimately terrifying to witness this from him of all people. But what separates Atsushi from Mori is that the latter views people as pawns. To Mori, the ends truly do justify the means. Atsushi, on the other hand, didn’t want to have to do this. He may not actually know Lucy, but he understands what it's like to lose the only home you've ever known. Even so, he was left with no other choice; for all he could sympathize, this was his last resort. The next they see each other is on the Moby Dick, where it's revealed that Lucy has been demoted to a maid – a source of menial labor, not too far a cry from her orphanage roots. But a home is a home, right? And now all she has to do to earn her stay in said home is abide by the villainy of her peers; her own villainy is of no consequence. Accordingly, her façade hasn’t repaired itself, instead been replaced with unmasked bitterness. She isn’t suppressing her victimhood anymore, rather, actively weaponizing it. In the Guild proper, Lucy’s value was directly proportional to her success, and so as far as she’s concerned, if the Agency came to Atsushi’s rescue even after he was captured, i.e., even after he failed, he's been valued since day one. As the Guild's maid, all of that is a moot point, but she's still utterly unable to perceive Atsushi as a fellow victim; that's just how bad her tunnel vision has gotten. Aboard the Moby Dick, however, when Atsushi reveals his scars, her perception of him joins her façade in shattering. She’s forced to confront his victimhood head-on, and in turn, he compels her to reexamine her own. The realization dawns that all she’s accomplished by playing the villain is turn her back on her past self and make herself that much lonelier, this leading her to abandon the very role that her wacky-crazy persona was built upon. This all taken into account, I can't say I'm entirely sure how Lucy could have “overcome her internal conflicts” while, y’know, staying wacky-crazy. It’s a fun idea on paper – that I’ll grant you – but it would run contrary to, well… essentially everything her character stands for, right from the moment of her introduction. ❦ Section #3: The Guild Aftermath Arc \Ahem.** Anyway- Switching gears, let’s mosey on over to the aftermath of Atsushi and Lucy’s farewell on the Moby Dick. Lucy's next appearance coming off the Guild arc takes place when Atsushi sees her on the street one day carrying a metal box – only for her to vanish. When giving this account to the Agency, he expresses concern over the Guild plotting revenge on them. Lucy serves as a red herring here: we're led to suspect that she's up to no good, but there's, in fact, an entirely different enemy at play, and eventually, it's revealed that she left the Guild once and for all, scoring a job as a waitress at the Café Uzumaki. Upon running into Atsushi there, she gets flustered, throws her box in his face and bolts. While this interaction is played for laughs, there’s a sad element to it as well: after all that transpired between them on the Moby Dick and how much she risked for him, come their next encounter, all he can muster is shock over her no longer being a terrorist. That has to hurt. As it turns out, Atsushi’s concerns about revenge weren’t misguided, but they were misplaced; the Guild isn’t back for round two, but Lucy continues to give him a hard time, and – come chapter 43, Cherrirs! – cites his failure to save her from the Moby Dick as promised as the reason. Just getting this out of the way: no, Atsushi didn’t lose his memories when he left Anne’s Room. Keep in mind, the rules/properties of Anne’s Room are malleable, and Lucy can bend most of them to her will, so I don’t think it’s too far-fetched to theorize that attaching the room’s exit to a surface in the real world, such as a wall or door, nullifies the amnesia effect. By connecting the ability-created white door to a real surface, like a sort of portal, the gap between ability consciousness and real-world consciousness could be bridged, allowing for memory retention. Honestly, though, I don't get why I've seen so many people claim that Atsushi lost his memories, given he outright confirms he didn't. In Cherrirs!, Atsushi, Kyōka and Lucy go down to the docks, prompted by a mysterious dispatch addressed to Kyōka. There, Lucy reveals to Atsushi that she tore the most essential page out of the dispatch as part of her so-called revenge, tosses it into the water and makes him swim for it. His foot gets caught on an old mooring chain, however, and he begins to drown. Flabbergasted, she jumps in to save him, teleporting them both to Anne's Room in a maneuver reminiscent of her actions on the you-know-what. In the proceeding dialogue, Atsushi explains himself and apologizes for being unable to save her like he’d promised – but Lucy admits that revenge was just an excuse, and that she took up the café job to make up for failing to wait like she’d promised. What I think some people miss here is that Lucy knows Atsushi saving her would’ve been impossible. Reading between the lines, it becomes evident that her actual reason for lashing out is thinking Atsushi forgot about her. And sure, maybe it’s a longshot given she was airlifted safely to the ground long before his re-infiltration, but can you really blame her for thinking she slipped his mind? He may not have forgotten in the traditional sense, but when all was said and done, he did just kind of go, “Welp, she got off the ship safely, guess I’ll move on.” Lucy knew very well that the Guild had countermeasures against Anne of Abyssal Red; she only assured Atsushi she’d be okay so that he’d go. She wasn’t in the dark about the evacuation plan or the crash countdown, either. And so, following the Guild’s disbanding, she seeks Atsushi out and starts working to apologize for initiating a promise that neither of them could keep. Of course, not all of it was a bluff; the real aspects of the promise were, explicitly, to survive, and implicitly, not to forget her when it’s all over. This is why she's unwavering when he reinforces that he couldn't have saved her, and why she only truly calms down when he confirms that he, in fact, thought to search for her. It’s worth noting, I think, that this scene doesn't meet the criteria for a tsundere-ism. Lucy’s hostility here was about her feelings of abandonment; her crush on Atsushi didn't factor in. The fact that she heard him out and cooled her jets almost as soon as he explained his side of the story lends itself to this, too. And while this might come off as a pedantic distinction, when it comes to trope deconstruction, I do actually think it matters. Lucy’s tsundere-isms are rarely as cut and dry as “insecure about her crush.” Following their heart-to-heart (and, uh… that… other… scene), Lucy becomes noticeably more cooperative, leading Atsushi and Kyōka to the right boat. Kyōka expresses distrust toward her, to which she states she doesn’t want her trust, but when Kyōka asks her whose trust she does want, she goes quiet, the implication being obvious. Now that the lingering miscommunications between them have been cleared up, Lucy wants to start from scratch in her relationship with Atsushi – build mutual trust and interact in a normal, everyday context. This chapter may mark the transition into Lucy's new role in the story, separate from the Guild, but again, it would be doing it a disservice to reduce it to any one thing, whether that be “occasionally helps the ADA” or “is in love with Atsushi.” Let’s delve deeper, shall we? ❦ Section #4: The Hero Mindset Sorry, Cherrirs!, you’re not quite off the hook yet – there are still a few panels of yours that I’d like to zoom in on. First thing’s first: this line. Though at a glance just some one-off admonishment, there’s a bit more going on beneath the surface. The basic idea here is that Lucy doesn't put Atsushi on an untouchable pedestal, say, the way Higuchi does Akutagawa or Teruko does Fukuchi. To the contrary, she's hyper-aware of his flaws, his reckless heroism above all. As I touched on briefly before, Atsushi defines his self-worth – his justification for living – by his ability to save people. He’s quick to put his life on the line to do so, too, relying on the Tiger's regenerative abilities to bypass the consequences. Lucy is highly critical of this self-destructive habit, and this wouldn't be the first time she's questioned him for trying to be the hero at his own peril. Hell, Lucy’s introduction in and of itself posed a challenge to Atsushi’s hero narrative, because – try as he might – he couldn’t save her, only defeat her. Conventional heroism – the kind he used to save Kyōka, for example – was simply not enough. In the end, it wasn't Atsushi's heroism that got through to her, rather, his vulnerability. Ever since the Moby Dick went down, Atsushi has been praised left and right by those around him. The Yokohama newspaper hails him as the city’s savior, and rightfully so. But this “don't drown” line… it’s the first mention of his victory that isn't an accolade. Is Lucy in awe of him? Absolutely. But that's not the part she focuses on; she focuses on him. She tells him to think of himself – to be self-preserving, like a person would. He didn’t have to take the bait. He’s proven time and time again that he’s resourceful enough to find other solutions, but what did he do? He dove in, anyway. At this, she can’t help but worry. Lucy's actions on the Moby Dick were very much in accordance with this worry as well. Even after she gave him the parachute, he didn’t jump right away – not because of the imminent danger, but because he momentarily saw through her first bluff about being invincible so long as she remained in Anne’s Room. He deduced that, even if this was true, it would still mean that she could never leave the room again. And so Lucy bluffed again, this time appealing to Atsushi's hero narrative by making him promise to come back and save her. She knew that he'd refuse to go if he thought she wouldn’t be okay, but she also knew that the final push had to be some kind of incentive for heroism; it's what he responds to quickest, after all. Of course, therein lies an obvious condition: in order to come back and save her, Atsushi would first have to, y'know, survive. For Lucy, though, being saved was never truly part of the equation. So in other words, the one time she did feed into Atsushi’s reckless heroism, it was to make him promise to live another day without his even realizing it. Later in Cherrirs!, after Kyōka discovers the truth about her parents’ deaths, Atsushi tries to offer his assistance, but Lucy drags him away, telling him to leave Kyōka to her feelings. This may also seem on the surface like just some random upbraiding, but lo and behold, it’s a deliberate callback to the conclusion of their fight in the Guild arc – after Lucy deactivated her ability and Atsushi directed the same offer at her. She didn't run away from him then solely because she resented her defeat and/or dreaded the inevitable penalty for it – no. She was fed up that, after all was said and done, he was still trying to play hero and sticking his nose where it didn't belong in the process. This scenario with Kyōka is a clear parallel; Lucy recognizes Atsushi's narrative kicking in and isn't having any of it. Lucy already understands Atsushi on a level that most don’t by virtue of perceiving his victimhood (as he does hers), but she also expects more from him than just salvation. She gets mad when he doesn't value his own life, when he tries to fight other people's battles for them – when she thinks he's forgotten about her. In contrast to Kyōka, who earlier this same chapter indicates that she doesn't really require anything from Atsushi – just being around him is enough – Lucy requires him to talk things out with her. Atsushi doesn’t engage in heroism for entirely selfless reasons. He also does it to validate himself and his existence. And while it’s true that this is thanks to the Headmaster (quite literally) beating that way of thinking into him, the way he continues to cling to it is nonetheless unhealthy. Atsushi saving Kyōka wasn’t purely out of the goodness of his heart; he ended up sympathizing with her, yes, just as he did with Lucy, but authentic belief in her redemption came after he saved her, not before. The fact that Atsushi and Kyōka care deeply for each other and the fact that – at the end of the day, he’s her savior first and foremost – can coexist; I’m definitely not saying their relationship is shallow. Frankly, though, I don’t think Kyōka will ever be ready to confront the aspect of Atsushi that saves others for self-driven reasons and by reckless means, because said aspect is what saved her. Lucy, on the other hand, has care and confrontation in spades; including just by existing, she presents a conflict that demands Atsushi be more of a person than a hero. Fast-forwarding a fair bit to Lucy’s first appearance since the Cannibalism arc, Atsushi, Kyōka and Mushitarō are brought by Ango to Anne's Room, where she proceeds to flip out, grilling Atsushi about why he’s a wanted man. Confused, he asks why she’s with Ango in the first place, and much to her chagrin, Ango reveals that she barged into Special Division headquarters shouting like a lunatic that the charges against Atsushi must be a mistake (and she brought RECEIPTS. Girl wrote an ESSAY), before he intervened, negotiating with the officers trying to arrest her. There’s a reasonable amount to unpack here, too. Second… she doesn’t put Atsushi on a pedestal, remember? So then… why? Why did she do what she did on his behalf and risk being detained? It wasn’t because, in her mind, Atsushi is a perfect being who can do no wrong. Unlike Aya, another non-law enforcement character who believes in the Agency’s innocence, Lucy isn’t defending Atsushi on the basis of “his virtues saved me, so he couldn’t possibly be evil.” Rather, it's because Atsushi being a terrorist – let alone associating with other terrorists – would fly in the face of his narrative. Lucy's anger in this scene can’t really be considered a tsundere-ism, either. She’s legitimately upset with Atsushi for what she (initially) perceives as yet another instance of him putting himself in needless danger. Again, she understands him on a fundamental level. She knows that terrorism would be antithetical to the very thing he measures his worth by, and that’s why she comes to his defense. Not idolization, not a crush – not even basic morals – but an inherent understanding of his flawed philosophy. Atsushi doesn’t want the Headmaster’s words haunting him forever. His goal, albeit perhaps an unconscious one, is to grow into his own person – a person who believes in themselves and doesn’t base their entire worth off of one attribute. He might have already succeeded in getting Kyōka to this point, but he himself still has a ways to go. Lucy is someone who pushes him toward that goal, if also unconsciously; she may not be informed of the specifics – Atsushi may never have told her about the Headmaster – but she continues to see him as more than just a hero, and behaves accordingly. Alright, that concludes part one. I would’ve posted it all in one go, but alas, character limits exist. If you made it this far and are interested, please check out part two. :) |

Part Nine Here! Part Ten Here! Part Eleven Here! Part Twelve Here! Part Thirteen Here! Part Fourteen Here! Part Fifteen Here! Part Sixteen Here! Part Seventeen Here! Part Eighteen Here! Part Nineteen Here! Part Twenty Here! Part Twenty One Here! Part Twenty Two Here! Last we saw John Cena was at Winter is Coming, where he surprisingly won the Dynamite Diamond Ring after forcing MJF to lose his cool and get himself disqualified. However, The Pinnacle (sans FTR, who aligned with Cena) beat him down so badly he needed stretchering out once the show went off the air. A few weeks pass, and MJF moves onto CM Punk as Cena remains nowhere to be seen. Eventually, it’s declared he’ll be back for the final Dynamite of February 2022. Road to Revolution 2022 Cena is back with the Diamond Ring on his finger, and he says he wants to bring back an old tradition of his. Back in the olden days, he ran an open challenge, facing off against the world’s best and brightest. He found out the hard way that today’s best and brightest hit a little harder than he remembered, but he’s up to the test, so he figures his only way to the World Title is by telling everyone… “if you want some, come get some!” He announces that it starts right now, with the second iteration at Revolution. Tossing his shirt aside, he settles into the corner as a referee appears, begging for anyone in the back to try their luck, and… YO! LISTEN! Cena chuckles as Max Caster comes through the tunnel, mediocrely rapping about something or other before the bell rings. Franchise Open Challenge: John Cena vs. “Platinum” Max Caster Out of the gates, Max rallies Bowens on the outside, trying to get the fans on side… FRANCHISE LARIAT BY CENA, STRAIGHT INTO AN FU! ONE! TWO! THREE! John Cena def. “Platinum” Max Caster (0:21) Cena grabs the microphone, not even having broken a sweat, and says “yo, listen, yo, at Revolution, get me a better foe,” before laughing at the low-hanging fruit that was his own bar and walking off. Revolution 2022 Cena makes his way down to the ring in the middle of the show, thanking the crowd for their warm reception before turning to the ramp and simply saying the Franchise Open Challenge starts now, so anybody who wants some can come get some. He waits a few moments, and then a few moments more, before a naturally slow response is made by ORANGE CASSIDY! John looks pretty confused as the King of Sloth Style comes out to a standing ovation, his opponent announced as weighing “whatever” and hailing from “wherever” before a lazy volley of pyro spurts out beside him. The Best Friends clap him on his denim-clad back and leave him to it, the crowd chanting “FRESHLY SQUEEZED” at the top of their lungs as Orange enters the ring, followed by “HOLY SHIT” as he stands opposite the Face That Runs The Place. Franchise Open Challenge: John Cena vs. Orange Cassidy Cena is still pretty clearly taken aback by Cassidy’s popularity as he tries for a lockup, Orange easily getting backed into the corner by John. Cena asks if he’s even here to fight, Cassidy not doing much of anything, and Cena shoves him into the turnbuckles. Orange calmly puts his hands in his pockets, the crowd erupting into cheers as he does so, so Cena simply drops him with a headlock takeover, only for Orange to reverse with a headscissors and kip up to his feet, hands still in his pockets. Cena stands nose to nose with him, and Orange plays Cena’s “frustrate them until they explode” strategy against him by throwing a molasses-esque kick to his leg, met with an “OOOOHHHHH!” from the crowd. Then another, and another, and another, before finally backing up for a feeble superkick to the knee, the crowd popping louder than Cena’s heard in ages. Orange winds up for one more, Cena casually sidestepping what he expects to be a slow-mo strike, but CASSIDY LANDS A SUPERKICK UNDER THE JAW, FOLLOWED BY AN ORANGE PUNCH! John is knocked to a knee, and CASSIDY CONNECTS WITH ANOTHER TO SEND HIM THROUGH THE ROPES! Still on his feet on the floor, Cena pivots to see CASSIDY FLYING AT HIM WITH A SUICIDE DIVE, BUT HE CATCHES HIM FOR A FALLAWAY SLAM INTO THE STEEL BARRICADE! Now in control, Cena sends Cassidy back in for a leg drop across the back of the neck for two, and follows it up by calling for the Franchise Lariat to cut Cassidy’s momentum off completely. However, Orange simply… doesn’t get up, opting to stay down instead of getting clotheslined. Cena heads over to lift him up, but ORANGE STACKS HIM UP! ONE! TWO! THRE-NOOO! John scrambles to pick Orange up, but Cassidy showcases some surprising power by GETTING CENA UP FOR A BEACH BREAK, ONLY FOR CENA TO REVERSE WITH A SUNSET FLIP! ONE! TWO! THR-ORANGE REVERSES TO LEVERAGE JOHN’S SHOULDERS TO THE MAT! ONE! TWO! THR-CENA POWERS OUT! Orange springs to his feet, as does Cena, Cassidy running under a Franchise Lariat attempt by John and bouncing off the ropes INTO A SHOULDER BLOCK BY CENA! Cena nails another shoulder block and a side slam before delivering a FIVE KNUCKLE SHUFFLE! The fans all boo as John gets up to his feet, raising his hands to feign surrender to the crowd and saying he’s “doing what he gotta do.” Cassidy slowly rises to his feet, and CENA GOES FOR AN FU, BUT ORANGE REVERSES IT INTO A STUNDOG MILLIONAIRE! ONE! TWO! THR-NOOOO! Cassidy winds up for another Orange Punch in the corner, the crowd rising to their feet in tandem with Cena… ORANGE PUNCH CAUGHT OUT OF THE SKY FOR AN FU, CENA ROLLING THROUGH TO DELIVER A SECOND ONE! MESSAGE SENT AS HE HOOKS BOTH LEGS! ONE! TWO! THREE! John Cena def. Orange Cassidy (10:35) Road to Double or Nothing 2022 It was a big win for Cena at Revolution, but it was also something of a revelation that he might not have been taking AEW’s roster seriously enough. With that in mind, he declares the Franchise Open Challenge is back on track, and he hopes to show everyone what he’s capable of to prove that even with all the incredible competitors in AEW’s locker room, he belongs at the top of the mountain. The challenge is answered by Jungle Boy. Franchise Open Challenge: John Cena vs. Jungle Boy Jungle Boy gets his shit in, even connecting with a corkscrew plancha to the outside to get things started off in his favour, but he gets a bit overzealous as he looks to avenge Christian Cage’s loss to Cena by going for the Snare Trap, an identical hold to Cena’s STFU. Cena grabs the ropes before Jungle Boy can lock in in, tripping Perry into the second rope with an STO before slipping behind for a TIGER SUPLEX, FOLLOWED UP BY AN FU! ONE! TWO! THREE! CENA KNOCKS OFF ONE HALF OF THE AEW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS, AND ANOTHER OF IT’S SELF-PROCLAIMED PILLARS! John Cena def. Jungle Boy (11:02) The Open Challenge continues on for a few weeks, with Cena notching victories over the likes of American Top Team’s Ethan Page and a particularly significant one over the Murderhawk Monster, Lance Archer. He also picks up a particularly hard-fought victory over AEW newcomer Konosuke Takeshita, shaking his hand after the bout while clutching the neck that Takeshita German Suplexed him on. John Cena def. Ethan Page (7:33) John Cena def. Lance Archer (10:41) John Cena def. Konosuke Takeshita (14:18) However, CM Punk beats him to the punch by staking his claim to Hangman Page’s AEW World Title at Double or Nothing, leaving Cena high and dry as Double or Nothing approaches, despite creeping up towards the top of the rankings. He says if he can’t be in the AEW Title match, he wants a great opponent in Las Vegas to prove he truly belongs as the next challenger for the gold. WAIT A SECOND! THE HANGMAN IS HERE! Hangman Page hits the ring, standing up to Cena and saying that he may be facing Punk at Double or Nothing, but Cena… Cena is in a special spot. Nobody on AEW’s roster has beaten CM Punk on a big stage except for him, so Hangman wants to send a message to the Straight Edge Saviour. He says if Cena wants, he’ll answer the Franchise Open Challenge next week and make it a title eliminator. John agrees, extending a hand to the champion, and they shake, with neither man letting go as they tighten their grips, leaning in close. AEW World Title Eliminator: John Cena vs. Hangman Page CM Punk is on commentary for this one, and it’s a massive atmosphere as Punk and Cena make eye contact for the first time in a decade. However, what’s just as crucial is Cena once again getting a crack at the AEW World Champion, and he intends to make the most of it, quickly taking the fight to Page with an onslaught of blows to the body. He backs Hangman up into the corner, brute forcing him onto the top turnbuckle before quickly going for an AVALANCHE FU, but Hangman knocks him down and bounces off the ropes for a SPRINGBOARD LARIAT FOR TWO! He sends Cena to the floor hopping to the top turnbuckle for a MOONSAULT TO THE OUTSIDE! Somehow landing on his feet, Page goes right over to Punk, who applauds halfheartedly as John slowly gets to his feet in the background, rushing over to Hangman for a TACKLE OVER THE ANNOUNCE BOOTH, STRAIGHT INTO PUNK HIMSELF! Cena drags Hangman back to the ring, calling for a Franchise Lariat, but Hangman counters it into a DEADEYE! ONE! TWO! THR-KICKOUT! It’s a frantic sprint from the get-go, both men going for broke with their biggest bombs available - Hangman wanting to get it done quickly before facing Punk so he can be 100% for Double or Nothing, and Cena already wounded from his lengthy string of open challenge victories. Naturally, Page hops through the ropes to attempt a BUCKSHOT LARIAT, BUT CENA DUCKS BEHIND, A BEAUTIFUL STANDING SWITCH LEAVING HIM IN PRIME POSITION FOR A GERMAN SUPLEX… BUT HE HOLDS ON, SPINNING AROUND FOR A DRAGON SUPLEX, ONLY TO HOLD ON AGAIN FOR A BRIDGING TIGER SUPLEX! WHAT STRENGTH! ONE! TWO! THRE-KICKOUT BY PAGE! Both men are pretty depleted early on, but the fight wages on as Cena hoists Hangman up, calling for an FU! He gets him onto his shoulders, but PAGE LANDS ON HIS FEET FOR A DISCUS FOREARM, ONLY TO EAT A HAYMAKER FROM CENA! They start trading blows in the middle of the ring, Cena getting the upper hand in the exchange before landing a few shoulder blocks, only to eat a BIG BOOT AS HE GOES FOR A FIVE KNUCKLE SHUFFLE! Hangman goes for a belly to back suplex, Cena fighting free and dumping Page out of the ring before bailing out to the floor himself, tossing Hangman into the barricade. He goes for an FU on the floor, but Page grabs the rope, dragging himself off Cena’s shoulders and delivering a kick to the gut, followed by a POWERBOMB STRAIGHT THROUGH THE TIMEKEEPER’S TABLE! Page lets out a battle cry, locking eyes with CM Punk as he sends Cena back between the ropes and hops onto the apron for a BUCKSHOT LARIAT, BUT CENA BEATS HIM TO THE PUNCH WITH A FRANCHISE LARIAT OF HIS OWN! BOTH MEN DOWN! They start coming to at about the same time, trading punches as they rise to their feet, and Cena gets a bit overzealous with a wide haymaker, Page catching him for a BACKDROP DRIVER! He hoists Cena up onto his shoulders, shouting at his next challenger as he goes for a GTS, BUT CENA GRABS THE KNEE, REVERSING IT INTO AN STFU! PAGE IS TRAPPED! CENA COULD MAKE THE CHAMP TAP RIGHT HERE… Page’s eyelids start fluttering, slowly fading out of consciousness as he drags himself forward - HE MAKES IT TO THE ROPE! Cena’s in the driver’s seat pretty firmly for the first time, and he intends to take full advantage as he waits for Page to get to his feet. He knows Hangman’s leg is in a bad way after contorting it in the STFU, so he probably won’t be able to land on his feet out of an FU. Page struggles to a vertical base, and HE GETS PAGE UP, BUT HANGMAN REVERSES INTO A DDT! He calls for another powerbomb on the Franchise, just as he did at ringside, and hoists John into position before CENA GOES FOR BROKE WITH A HURRICANRANA! Page springs to his feet, dazed and confused as Cena gets him into a fireman’s carry for an FU! ONE! TWO! THRE-KICKOUT BY PAGE! Cena rolls through for another one, unrelenting in his pursuit of victory, but Hangman manages to persevere, grabbing the top rope and dropping down onto the apron, landing a stiff elbow on the jaw and following it with a BUCKSHOT LARIAT, TURNING JOHN CENA INSIDE OUT! THE CHAMP HOOKS THE LEG… ONE! TWO! THREE! A HARD-FOUGHT WIN IN A WILD SPRINT FOR THE HANGMAN, WHO MANAGES TO VANQUISH ONE OF CM PUNK’S GREATEST FOES EN ROUTE TO DOUBLE OR NOTHING! Hangman Page def. John Cena (15:39), meaning Cena can’t challenge him while he holds the AEW World Title Battered and bruised, and with the first failure in the Franchise Open Challenge having been logged, Cena is pretty dejected next week on Dynamite. He says his invitation for Double or Nothing still stands, as he wants to face the best and brightest the future has to offer, knowing Page will lose the gold eventually. He says he’s beaten two “Pillars,” so far, and while he might’ve come up short against the AEW Champion, while the matches may be taking a toll, he’s still feeling ready for whatever’s next. But not this. Out comes Sting, who Cena hasn’t seen since Survivor Series 2014, who came to John’s rescue in his time of need. John seems ready to accept his challenge, but Sting laughs, shaking John’s hand. He says he’s not looking for a singles match, but he heard Cena talking about the Pillars, and he’s got one in mind for Cena to face at Double or Nothing… Darby Allin. Out comes Darby, staring Cena down, and John says he knows Allin’s good - he’s heard a lot about him, but when it comes down to it, John wants back in the hunt. Darby may be stepping up, but Cena vows to make him step aside in Las Vegas. Double or Nothing 2022 John Cena vs. Darby Allin Knowing Cena’s worse for wear, Darby goes crazy right from the bell, simply throwing himself at Cena at top speed and hoping for the best as he careens off of the Cenation leader’s frame. John staggers into the ropes, Allin wailing on him with rights and lefts before soaring at him with a dropkick to send Cena through the ropes, following it with a SUICIDE DIVE, LIKE HE’S BEEN SHOT FROM A CANNON! He sends Cena back in to go for a Coffin Drop, but John manages to get right back up, high on adrenaline, and deliver an AVALANCHE BRIDGING GERMAN SUPLEX! ONE! TWO! THRE-KICKOUT FROM DARBY, BUT CENA’S GOT HIM IN TROUBLE EARLY! From here, John knows the drill - ragdolling Allin all over the place. He jets him around the ring with horrific suplexes, plants him on the apron with a side slam, nails a SWINGING POWERBOMB INTO THE RING POST, and goes for an FU, ONLY FOR ALLIN TO REVERSE INTO A LAST SUPPER! ONE! TWO! THRE-CENA BARELY GETS THE SHOULDER UP, BUT DARBY CAPITALIZES TO NAIL A STUNDOG MILLIONAIRE! He clambers up to the top rope, eager to put Cena away with a Coffin Drop, but JOHN CATCHES HIM OUT OF THE AIR IN AN ARGENTINE BACKBREAKER RACK! He flips Allin over… FU CONNECTS! ONE! TWO! THREE! CENA SURVIVES THE ONSLAUGHT OF DARBY ALLIN TO PICK UP A CONVINCING WIN! John Cena def. Darby Allin (10:03) In the main event, CM Punk wins the AEW World Heavyweight Title from Hangman Page, ending Cena’s ban from challenging for the gold less than two weeks after it was implemented. Road to Forbidden Door 2022 The Rampage after Double or Nothing, CM Punk declares he’s injured, as is tradition. This opens up a huge power vacuum for the Interim AEW World Title, and it’s announced that there will be an interpromotional tournament between AEW and NJPW for the gold, concluding at Forbidden Door. At Dominion, Hiroshi Tanahashi stamps his ticket to the main event, and the next week, John Cena wins a battle royal to make it to the semi-finals - where he meets Jon Moxley. Moxley and Tanahashi have been building towards a match for over a year, but everyone knows Cena vs. Tanahashi is a dream match in its own right - the Face of American pro wrestling vs. the Face of Japanese puroresu. Moxley and Cena also have plenty of history in their own right, making the high-stakes bout all the more compelling. They have a promo segment to open next week’s Dynamite, Moxley saying that last time he and Cena met one on one, he won. Last time they met on a grand stage, he won, and did so so decisively that Cena never main evented WrestleMania again. John chuckles, saying that he knows in a past life, Moxley had his number, and ever since, he’s only grown more dangerous. He should be shaking in his boots, but he’s not. If Moxley’s the tallest task in AEW… he’s up to it. He’ll see him later tonight. Interim AEW World Title Tournament Semi-Final: John Cena vs. Jon Moxley These two revisit their past blood feud with a suitable amount of vim and vigor, Moxley bleeding like a stuffed pig after getting hit with a Five Knuckle Shuffle or something. It turns into a brutally violent scrap, both men refusing to surrender the chance to face Tanahashi at Forbidden Door and reach the top of the AEW mountain. They duke it out for nearly fifteen minutes, trading big bombs, but eventually Moxley manages to pull ahead with an X-Plex before lining up for the Death Rider, only to be backed into the corner by Cena with a flurry of punches. Cena goes for the Franchise Lariat, but Jon blasts him with a forearm, dropping Cena for a series of HAMMER AND ANVIL ELBOWS, AND NOW A DEATH RIDER BY MOXLEY! ONE! TWO! THRE-CENA KICKS OUT, BUT MOXLEY TRANSITIONS STRAIGHT INTO THE BULLDOG CHOKE, SQUEEZING THE LIFE OUT OF THE FRANCHISE! John struggles towards the ropes, but Moxley stomps on his hand, shifting his centre of gravity enough for Cena to roll back INTO A STACK! ONE! TWO! TH-MOXLEY KICKS OUT, BUT HOOKS CENA’S ARMS FOR ANOTHER DEATH RIDER, ONLY FOR JOHN TO POP HIM UP INTO AN FU! HE ROLLS THROUGH… A SECOND FU, AND NOW INTO A THIRD! ONE! TWO! THREE! JOHN CENA’S GOT ANOTHER SHOT AT THE AEW TITLE THANKS TO FINALLY KNOCKING OFF JON MOXLEY! John Cena def. Jon Moxley (15:36) to advance Staggering to his feet, battered beyond belief, Cena celebrates his victory as the BCC cart off a furious Jon Moxley. It’s the biggest win of Cena’s AEW career, but he doesn’t have long to bask in it as HIROSHI TANAHASHI APPEARS ON THE STAGE! He makes his way down to the ring, the crowd showering both men in chants of “HOLY SHIT” as Tanahashi and Cena stand across from each other within the confines of the same squared circle. John steps to the middle of the ring, as does Tanahashi, soaking in the response before the Ace raises his arms, a smug smile on his face. Cena slowly lifts his hand into a salute, putting a little extra oomph behind the motion before telling Tanahashi the Champ is Here, the show going off the air with wrestling’s two most iconic modern babyfaces finally locked in for a gargantuan battle. https://preview.redd.it/brlvbx0kbm4d1.png?width=1876&format=png&auto=webp&s=5d0fb6f36c6e04b861281455723ed51ecc581419 Forbidden Door 2022 Interim AEW World Title: John Cena vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi Ladies and Gentlemen, it's my job to make you believe. This is it. THE Dream Match. From the lockup, the crowd is molten, erring on the side of Cena as AEW’s representative, but things quickly change as Cena starts to work on the body, slowing the pace down to assault Tanahashi’s core in the early going. He bears down on him with suplexes and slams, even going as far as to just stomp on the ribs and stomach to keep Tanahashi down, knowing there’s no breaking the Ace’s spirit - you just have to batter him until he simply can’t keep going. However, he gets a bit overzealous, Tanahashi nabbing his foot and connecting with a Dragon Screw to take him to the mat, followed by a grounded Dragon Screw to begin his work on the leg. Tanahashi keeps the pressure on with desperate chop blocks and low dropkicks, knowing his only hope is to keep his stronger foe on his back, but Cena’s freakish power neutralizes most of Tanahashi’s efforts, reversing a SLINGBLADE INTO A BLUE THUNDER BOMB! ONE! TWO! THR-KICKOUT! The Ace comes up gasping for breath, and Cena digs into his reserves with a series of blows to the body, laying into him with a series of shoulder blocks and a side slam before going for a FIVE KNUCKLE SHUFFLE, BUT TANAHASHI CATCHES HIM WITH A DENKOU SEKKA! ONE! TWO! THR-CENA KICKS OUT, SPRINGING UP AND PIVOTING TO DELIVER A FRANCHISE LARIAT! ONE! KICKOUT AT ONE! TANAHASHI’S NOT GOING ANYWHERE, AND CHICAGO HAS ERUPTED! Now firmly on the side of Hiroshi Tanahashi, the fans rally behind him as he gets back to his feet, urging Cena to throw everything he’s got. Cena uncorks a few haymakers, staggering the Ace, but Tanahashi LAYS INTO HIM WITH A HUGE SLAP ACROSS THE FACE, HIS ENTIRE BODY WEIGHT PUT BEHIND IT! The Franchise is stunned, looking slightly dazed before his face contorts into one of frustration, charging for another Franchise Lariat but being sent through the ropes before THE ACE NAILS A DROPKICK THROUGH THE ROPES! He scrambles up to the top turnbuckle… CROSSBODY TO THE FLOOR, TAKING CENA DOWN! TANAHASHI’S ON A ROLL! It’s clear both men are worse for wear after that one, the collision naturally taking Cena down but also exacerbating the damage to Tanahashi’s core. The New Japan star sends John back in, going up top once again before going for a HIGH FLY FLOW, BUT CENA ROLLS OUT OF THE WAY, DELIVERING A SERIES OF DEADLIFT SUPLEXES ON TANAHASHI FOR ANOTHER NEARFALL! He calls for an FU as Tanahashi struggles to stand, hoisting him up ON ONE LEG, BUT TANAHASHI COUNTERS INTO A TORNADO DDT, CENA UNABLE TO KEEP A FIRM BASE! HE’S GOT CENA DOWN, AND NOW HE RUSHES TO THE TOP ROPE, FIGHTING THROUGH THE PAIN… HIGH! FLY! FLOW! ONE! TWO! THRE-NOOOO! Tanahashi clutches his ribs as he wills himself onwards, dragging himself to the ropes and heaving himself up the turnbuckles for ANOTHER HIGH FLY FLOW, BUT CENA CATCHES HIM OUT OF THE AIR FOR AN FU! ONE! TWO! THRE-TANAHASHI KICKS OUT, AND THE UNITED CENTER HAS COME UNGLUED! Cena rolls right over Tanahashi to hoist him up for a second consecutive FU, but TANAHASHI REVERSES INTO A CRUCIFIX PIN! ONE! TWO! THR-CENA REVERSES IT INTO A HIGH STACK! ONE! TWO! THR-TANAHASHI ROLLS OVER, GRABBING CENA’S BAD LEG TO GO FOR A CLOVERLEAF, BUT CENA TRIPS HIM UP AND LOCKS IN THE STFU! TANAHASHI’S FADING! THERE’S NO UNIVERSE IN WHICH THE ACE TAPS, BUT HE COULD PASS OUT… HE REACHES TO THE ROPES, BUT HE’S FINGERTIPS SHORT! His eyelids begin to flutter, his arm dropping to the canvas, but suddenly, his eyes bulge open, a surge of energy driving him forward… but not far enough, collapsing just shy of the ropes. The referee grabs his arm to check if he’s out, but TANAHASHI GRABS HIM BY THE COLLAR! HE’S NOT DONE YET! ONE LAST BURST, BUT CENA DRAGS THE ACE BACK TO THE MIDDLE OF THE RING - ONLY FOR TANAHASHI TO REVERSE IT INTO AN INSIDE CRADLE! ONE! TWO! THRE-CENA GETS THE SHOULDER UP, AND NOW HE’S GOT TANAHASHI UP ON HIS SHOULDERS FOR A SECOND FU, AND NOW A THIRD! The air is let out of the building as he finally hooks both legs… ONE! TWO! THREE! CENA’S ON TOP OF THE WORLD, NOW A TWENTY TIME WORLD CHAMPION! John Cena def. Hiroshi Tanahashi (22:40) to win the Interim AEW World Title |
