Monday is the first day of the work week that many people dread. Not all people dread it, but some. Let's take a look into the Numerology of Monday to decode the energy and what it can be used for to work with it and not against it.

A month or so ago I busted my phone, and it was a huge pain in the ass. Aside from some lost data which was minor, the biggest PIA was resetting MFA, getting in touch with my US banks, and any other services that were tied to my phone. The experience also made me take a step back and realize I am pretty lax with security, and if someone had gotten hold of my phone and somehow god-forbid gotten the passcode, then I'd be fucked. They could do so much damage with unlimited access to my email + MFA SMS, even in just a few hours.
As a result, I kind of went down the ADHD rabbit hole hyper-fixating on how best to "optimize" my iPhone and iCloud configuration for two things:

1. If it breaks, the transition to a new device will be relatively painless. I won't have to spend several days stressing and trying to find the right international customer support number for a myriad of institutions and services to get into my accounts.
   
2. If it gets stolen and compromised, then there will be enough barriers such that the I'll have enough time to lock down the device and/or my accounts remotely before the thief can get key data or move funds.
   

So I put together this guide and checklist that I thought I'd share with others. I am a programmer but by no means a security guru, and so if any IT, DevOps, or SecOps folks want to chime-in with suggestions or improvements, please do.

Requirements

• an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone SE (2nd generation), and iPhone 14 or newer for eSIM compatibility.
• a US-based carrier with eSIM support + a pay-as-you-go model for international travel (I use Verizon)
• iOS 17 or above (may not be strictly necessary, but I know my setup works with iOS 17.4.1)
• a password manager. I personally use 1Password because it works, is reliable, has cross-device support, and is easy and intuitive. It's also only $3/month.

Dual Sim Setup

I have been rocking an iPhone 12 for the past few years, and it's served me very well. I know the newer iPhones (14 and up) no longer offer physical SIM card support, but carriers in most developing countries are behind the curve. Even if they offer eSIM support, it's been my experience that it's a major headache to get setup, there is a lack of customer support in English, and they may even require a local ID to register the eSIM. It's way easier to just head to a shop and pay $5 for a SIM card, load some funds onto it, and then you're good to go.
The eSIM has been very helpful for maintaining a US phone number for which I can receive SMS texts from my banks and other financial services as well as continue to use iMessage with all my US contacts since hardly anybody is on Whatsapp.
Most, if not all, carriers in the US support eSIMs now, and so you should try to find a carrier that offers an international pay-as-you-go plan. Verizon offers two international plans - one is a "Travel Pass" where it's a flat fee of $10/day anywhere outside the US or Canada (even for just one text message). The other is "pay for what you use" which has a rate per text, minute, and mb. For my US plan, I only care about receiving SMS texts from my banks and the occasional phone call to a service that doesn't have an international, toll-free number. Data will always be cheaper outside the US, so I disable cellular data switching for my US line.
The last time I was in the US was for the holidays and I bought 2 used iPhone 12's for about $200 each. They have some scuffs, but they're perfectly serviceable. In LATAM, it also doesn't attract nearly as much unwanted attention in the street as an iPhone 14 or 15.
I brought these with me as extra devices. When my phone busted last month, thankfully I had a backup in iCloud and everything was loaded in a few minutes as normal. This was before I was using the eSIM, but if I had the eSIM I could just go to Verizon support online via chat and they could help me switch the line to the new device easily.

Basic Configurations

• Always use the latest version of firmware
• Require a passcode that's unique to that device.
• Use FaceID instead of passcode when possible (a thief can't snipe your passcode from a distance if you unlock your phone with FaceID)
• Set auto-lock to 30 seconds (lowest possible)
• Erase data upon excessive passcode failures note, this is complemented in a later step with daily backups. The odds of you putting in the wrong passcode 10 times is low, but in the event you do and you wipe the device by accident, you should be able to easily load in a back-up from the previous day)
• Turn off "Ask to Join Networks"
• Forget unused networks so that you don't rejoin automatically (airports, hotels, etc.)

Creating Backups

• Set iCloud backups to run automatically every night. This will allow you to load your entire phone as is (contacts, call history, iMessages, apps, even your wallpaper) onto another device during setup. The iCloud backup usually runs at 2am while I'm sleeping.
• You may need to pay for a higher tier in iCloud if you have too much stored on your phone. It's $3/month for 200gb of iCloud storage, and I find it worth it. Though I know some people with tens of thousands of photos for which 200gb might not be enough.

Password Policy

• For any accounts that may contain sensitive data (payments, PII, etc), always generate a unique password with 1Password. Don't reuse passwords. Same goes for PIN codes.
• For core accounts, create a strong but memorable password and then memorize it. The odds of getting locked out of 1Password are low if you're diligent, but for 2 or 3 core accounts (where you access money, your primary recovery email, your iCloud, 1Password), it's worth it to create strong, unique passwords for each core service and memorize them.
• I try not to reuse passwords in general, but I still sometimes am lazy and use one of my handful of typical passwords if there's no sensitive data collected by the service and it's a service I don't use often.

MFA

Set up MFA with everything. Add multiple options if possible. My preferred MFA options are as follows:

1. One-time code that renews every 30 seconds. This is device agnostic and can be stored in 1Password. You could also use Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, Authy or similar, but there's just more overhead to now recover those accounts if your device becomes inaccessible.
2. One-time code to recovery email.
3. One-time code via SMS to my US phone number. On the pay-as-you-go Verizon plan, I only pay 5 cents per text message received. It's worth it to keep one consistent number.
4. List of recovery codes (stored in 1Password as an attached txt file for the given account)
5. Use another app for verification (Google does this a lot).

Lockdown your iCloud security

• Enable MFA.
• Create a strong, unique password.
• Remove any old or unused devices from the iCloud account (old phones, ipods, etc).
• Enable "Find My" for all of your devices.
• In Find My, configure all devices to send the last known location.
• In Find My, enable the configuration to remotely wipe a device.

In the event your phone is stolen, the idea is you could run back to any of your devices or even use a friend's device to log into iCloud on the web, go to Find My, and then in a single button click you can lock and wipe the stolen device. If the thief turned off the device or disabled wifi/cellular, then as soon as it comes back online it will be wiped.

Final Clean-Up

• Move any compromising photos to the "hidden" folder (which requires FaceID or passcode to unlock)
• Review the Files app for any documents containing sensitive info. If you need these documents to be accessible on mobile, then move them to 1Password and delete them from the Files app.
• Create a shortcut to trigger the lock screen (and thus require FaceID or passcode) when specific apps are opened (banking, email, photos, etc).
• Not sure if this is best practice, but I just keep everything in 1P and turn off apple keychain and the apple built-in password manager. I also don't save passwords in Chrome or Safari.

Extra tips

These aren't really iPhone tips but general tips. They are probably obvious to you if you aren't as scatterbrained as me, but I figured that I'd drop them here in case they help someone.

• Add thorough security measures to iCloud, primary email, and any banking or financial services. Review each account and make sure you have a strong, unique password as well as a unique PIN, MFA configured, login alerts, recovery codes, and an international, 24-hour toll-free phone number stored somewhere to contact the service in the event of a crisis. For banking services, add withdrawal limits, regional restrictions (if you bounce between the same few countries), and SMS notifications for charges over a certain threshold. Open up a second checking account with a separate debit card for trips to the ATM.
• Consolidate and close any unused bank accounts. I realized that on my phone I had Revolut, Venmo, Paypal, Nequi, plus 4 US banking institutions. I took this time to close my Discover account (which is pretty much useless outside the US anyway), close my Revolut account since I'm hardly ever in the UK/EU, and consolidate investment accounts from different institutions into just a handful that's easier to monitor.

I have Fios cable but sometimes watch on YES Fire TV app. I recall the option to sign in with my Verizon Fios authentication login, but that seems to have disappeared.

I came from Optimum's TV where everything is available to watch on Apple TV's via their app or the mobile phone app. Never had to deal with issues with the app itself signing out or MSG+,HBO etc signing out constantly to reverify my Home TV Package.
Verizon? Constantly getting signed out of the TV App every day on one or two of the Apple TV's. The "Device" registration doesn't work and never adds my Apple TV's to get around this. Not to mention the freezing or glitches with their app.
MSG+ and HBO App's always ask to reverify my login with my provider.
To top it all off, their what you can watch on their stream box, vs apple tv, mobile device, desktop/laptop browser makes no sense.

Verizon allows you to try their 5G Home Internet service for free for 30 days.
I started the trial 24 days ago and I've run 302 speed tests since then.
My network performance averages out to be

Download	Upload	Latency
160.32 Mbps	12.91 Mbps	30ms

Which isn't awful, but it's just over half of the specified 300/20 maximum.
Verizon also specifies that when the 5G connection fails over to 4G LTE, the maximum download speed is 70 Mbps.
Of the 302 speed tests, 17.88 percent of my results had a download speed under 70 Mbps.
My issue isn't the results themselves as much as it is the fact that when it does appear to fail over to LTE the speed test results are my only indicator that it's happening. The only cellular metrics available to the user are the 5G RSRP and the 4G LTE RSRP, which I imagine are only part of the equation that determines whether the MediaTek modem should fail over to LTE.
I have a hunch that it sometimes simply connects to the wrong tower, but all I can do is speculate.
Verizon's 5G Home Plus could work for me if I had more control over the cellular connection, but at the moment, I'm leaning more towards buying a third party 5G modem with a Snapdragon X62.
Since I only have six days left in my trial run, I'm wondering if anybody can answer these questions:

• Once you're logged into Verizon's ARC-XCI55AX CPE, there appears to be an "Engineering Page" located at https://192.168.1.1/#/eng/ or https://mynetworksettings.com/#/eng/ which asks you for a password. This password is unrelated to both the "network settings" password and WPA-PSK.
  • Does anybody know what this password is, where to find it, or how to calculate it? Login credentials consisting of a password and a token are posted to /eng_auth.cgi as an application/x-www-form-urlencoded string like data=&token=
  • This is where you could find cellular modem logs, GPS logs, APN configurations, etc. I know this because the Engineering Page calls a JavaScript file 3452.70c08690.js. Here are a couple snippets from this script.

What I'm noticing here is that the CPE is connecting to an auto configuration server at https://hdm5g.vzwdm.com/ using the TR-069 CPE Wan Management Protocol. Is there any way to tell the CPE to connect to my own TR-069 server instead?
• I'm assuming that ports 4567 and 4577 are related to the above CWMP implementation. Running openssl s_client -connect mynetworksettings.com:4577 returns certificate data, but fails to connect with the following error sslv3 alert handshake failure:ssl\record\rec_layer_s3.c:1586:SSL alert number 40. The server certificate's subject name is my CPE's serial number, which is different from the SSL cert on port 443. Does anybody know for sure what these ports are for?
• The hidden USB-C port on the bottom is, I believe, for firmware flashing. Plugging it into my Ubuntu laptop and turning on the CPE the device gets recognized as VID 0E8D PID 2000, which is the MediaTek preloader. I've tried methods described here -> https://github.com/bkerlemtkclient to crash the preloader and enter the bootrom. I can get it to be recognized VID 0E8D PID 0003, but the process hangs from there. Has anybody had any luck accessing the modem through the USB-C port and running AT commands?
• Has anybody compared the performance of the MediaTek T750 modem vs. Qualcomm SD X62? I'm looking at maybe getting a Chester Tech Ninja v2.

Paying half the Verizon bill and still they canceled my line when I finally quit a month ago. lost my banking apps my icloud accounts and everything that requires verifying. signed up for visible with a promo but I am using an iphone 6s 16g with a battery drain and I cannot even login to my kids class dojo to talk to their teachers because my internal storage is maxed. Can only get Verizon coverage out ere in the boonies...if you can help Id be eternally grateful!

Bit of a tricky question.
Background: I work overnight and routinely try to find ways to keep myself awake. There is a big mounted smart TV in my workplace, but it's usually just used for team meetings and what not, and nothing during my shift. I'd love to be able to cast youtube or netflix from my phone to the TV, but I ran in to a problem: both my phone and the TV need to be connected to the same wifi.
The guest wifi where I work is a serviceable speed for streaming, especially in the dead of night, but requires a login to use. Usually on a phone it's like a pop up web URL where you verify the terms before it fully connects. As far as I can tell there's no way to do this on the smart TV (unless maybe I can find a way to access a web browser?).
I can turn on my hotspot on my phone and connect to it with the TV that way, but Verizon only gives me 5gb of data before they dropkick my speeds, so it's not really a viable option.
If I connect to the wifi on my phone, does hotspot still use my 5gb of data? Or will it just sort of repeat the guest wifi signal out to the TV, as a way to bypass the login check?

Going on a quick weekend getaway this weekend then a longer trip next month but wanted to make sure I got my facts straight before heading out. Mobile hotspotting I have tested out before in my work parking lot and it worked great so I got that all set up. As far as for at the hotel and when I go on a flight though, I'm curious if people just still use mobile hotspotting? Since it's creating a wifi connection that the portal connects to. Or is there a strong enough connection connecting to the hotel /public /airport wifi. If you do connect to any of those example wifi points and they require a login to access the wifi, how does that work? Aren't you then just having to hotspot your phone to get it to connect to that wifi?
Hope that all makes sense... Any tips and tricks are appreciated. I've already done the ps5 hardwired, port forwarding for remote play and new router investment done. I'm in the states just for context too and my provider is Verizon.

Known exploited software flaws are one of the top 5 initial access vectors. We continue to share n-day vulnerabilities being actively exploited. You can prioritize starting with the CISA known exploited vulnerability (KEV) catalog.
A close #2 priority is flaws with weaponized proof of concept (PoC) code available. Exploit chances are higher with weaponized PoC code available. If you do nothing else with patching, have an emergency 24-to-48-hour patching process for exploited and weaponized PoC code available vulnerabilities.
We should consider what is exposed to the Internet. Let’s remove some of the low hanging fruit threat actors continue to target.

This is quite the doozy. Yesterday my iPhone 12 completely black screen bricked. Power resetting doesn’t work, wireless and wired charging doesn’t work, and there is no visual display activity at all. The phone wasn’t dropped or damaged in any way prior to bricking, I’m almost certain it had around 20% when it black screened.
Anyways, with my iPhone 12 dead, I head to the Verizon store to purchase myself a standard 15. As I’m setting it up I realize I have a couple issues:
1) my media/purchases Apple ID is different than my main Apple ID, and without the login information to the media and purchases account I lose all progress in every game. I am in the process of recovering that account but the email is a Comcast email so it is inaccessible and Apple refuses to accept the Lock Screen password of my old phone even though I know it’s correct.
2) due to my iCloud storage being full, my last successful backup was 4 months ago. It’s not the end of the world, but quite a bit of data was accumulated by me in those 4 months that I’d love to have back. For apps like notes and messages that auto update to iCloud, why has the backup taken me back to the content of four months ago despite being constantly updated on my old phone past 4 months?
Side note: are you able to recover a clash of clans or Royale account with your game center login without the old media and purchases Apple ID account, or will I need access to that Comcast email to recover that progress?

I recently purchased the Arris SURFboard SBG7400AC2 from eBay as I am a new customer with Xfinity. I tried to do the self installation and was not successful. I chatted with a representative over the app and he tried to add the modem to my account, but was not successful either. The send receive button is constantly flashing. I completed a factory reset four times including the 30/30/30 second method and removing the coax cable and attempted to log into the modem by visiting http://192.168.0.1/. I keep getting an error message stating invalid login credentials. I've tried the last 8 digits of the serial number and also the generic "password" password. Neither are working. I agreed for a technician to come next week and they are going to charge a $100 fee. Is there anything else I can do to try and get my internet running or get logged into my modem? I will add that I moved into a new home that's never had Xfinity service in the past, only Verizon.

Was a Verizon customer for 15 years, happy, no issues. Got AT&T fiber due to moving and was coerced into switching to their mobile as well (deal was too good to ignore w/ better service in my new area). Anyway…
Need to pay my last bill for Verizon, $10 or so. Well…my login no longer active cause new service, can’t pay there. I click a portal to do one time payment as a disconnected service…requires my full account number which is only found at top of bill. Of course I did paperless billing so I can’t get the account number. Before you ask, only partial account number is in emails for bills paid.
I call Verizon, takes forever to get to someone ofc and they proceed to tell me there is no possible way for them to get into my account to read me my old account number to pay them what I owe lol.
So I can’t pay via app, can’t pay via payment portal and can’t pay over the phone. Lastly, I believe the address they had on file was my address from the place I was at prior to that last (goddamnit), meaning I won’t get a forwarded letter bill either.
