The heat and the pressure are on—for our planet, and for one more World War.
Last Week in Collapse: June 2-8, 2024
This is Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter compiling some of the most important, timely, useful, soul-crushing, ironic, stunning, exhausting, or otherwise must-see/can’t-look-away moments in Collapse.
This is the 128th newsletter. You can find the May 26-June edition here if you missed it last week. You can also receive these posts (with images) every Sunday in your email inbox with Substack.
——————————
Bengaluru broke a 133-year rain record by almost 10mm last Sunday, with 111mm (4.37 inches) of rain falling in a single day. In Sri Lanka, some 24,000 people were displaced by recent flooding. A heat wave swept through the southwest United States and northern Mexico. Part of Niger already broke its June temperature record. Parts of New South Wales, Australia broke nighttime temperatures as well; so did the Philippines, and Vietnam. And a heat wave in Greece.
Atmospheric blocking” happens when regions of the atmosphere remain stationary for days or weeks, imposing similar weather on a region for a while. A study released in Nature Communications looked at Svalbard, which is warming faster than the Arctic, which is itself warming faster than most of the rest of the planet. The researchers claim that atmospheric blocking has resulted in warmer & wetter conditions in Svalbard, which is driving its ice loss. “The augmented blocking in the Ural and Scandinavian regions in the future combined with the projected declines in sea ice, and increases in sea surface temperatures and moisture availability, will likely increase the magnitude and frequency of exceptional rainfall incidents similar to the 2016 occurrence, posing further hazards to the population and ecosystems in Svalbard.”
A paywalled study in Nature Climate Change emphasizes “in the absence of a global tipping point there is no safety margin within which permafrost loss would be acceptable.” The summary states that permafrost melt does not have a worldwide tipping point, but rather several local temperature thresholds. Permafrost worldwide is expected to be all melted once global temperature gains hit 5 or 6 °C.
We are currently in the brief neutral period between El Niño and La Niña, expected to begin around August. Meteorologists expect temperatures in the eastern Pacific to decline for between 1 and 3 years—and for stronger Atlantic hurricanes. A 14-page report from the WMO forecasts a particularly wet summer for Central America.
Monsoon storms in Sri Lanka killed 14, mostly by falling trees, though others drowned or were covered by landslides. Texas saw “canteloupe-size hail” fall during a freak tornado; some think it is a record size for the region. Experts say some 23% of Africa’s land has been degraded, by five major factors: 1) invasive species, 2) climate change, including Drought and flooding, 3) resource extraction, 4) deforestation, and 5) pollution, including algal blooms. Poverty, population growth, and resource dependencies have aggravated the problem, says the article.
In Kashmir, a glacier Collapsed, sending three plunging into the ice, one of whom has still not been found. In the Philippines, a volcanic mud landslide swept into a village; volcano alerts were raised to 2 (on a 0-5 scale). Rising sea levels are displacing residents of one of Panama’s islands (pop: ~1,200); others will follow. Greece is gearing up for a fierce wildfire season ahead. And, in a moment of hopeful news, Sweden is banning bottom trawling in its “marine protected areas.”
In the EU, early polling appears to show a “greenlash,”, a backlash to the Green Alliance—and perhaps a loss of some 30% of their 72 current seats in the EU Parliament (705 total). Some blame the “moral superiority complex” of Greens, while others believe it is their lack of compromise on important issues. Farmer protests also damaged Green sentiment; now future sweeping climate reforms will probably have to wait years to get passed, since conservatives are expected to make gains. Most results will emerge within 24 hours of this post.
Worldwide, 39% of environmental journalists have faced threats due to their reporting—according to a 112-page report by the Earth Journalism Network. Most of the threats came to reporters writing about illegal extraction operations.
Roughly 20% of sealife near the surface is expected to face a “triple threat” of climate hazards: extreme heat, oxygen loss and acidification. Some of these species will die in place; others will be forced into progressively smaller living spaces. Most of the danger lies in the northern Pacific. The full study in AGU Advances has more.
The UN Secretary-General announced that we are on the “highway to climate hell.” And we aren’t wearing any seatbelts. The EU Copernicus Programme says last May was the hottest on record. This means the last 12 months were the hottest on record, with each consecutive month setting a new monthly record. Our planet is supposedly on the edge of 1.5 °C temperature increase, but some think we’ve already surpassed it.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released a 27-page report, “Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update 2024-2028,” predicting short-term temperatures exceeding the 1.5 °C mark.
“The global mean near-surface temperature for each year between 2024 and 2028 is predicted to be between 1.1°C and 1.9°C higher than the average over the years 1850-1900. It is likely (80% chance) that global mean near-surface temperature will exceed 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average levels for at least one year between 2024 and 2028. It is about as likely as not (47%) that the five-year mean will exceed this threshold….Arctic warming over the next five extended winters (November to March), relative to the average of the 1991-2020 period, is predicted to be more than three times as large as the warming in global mean temperature. Predicted precipitation patterns for 2024, relative to the 1991-2020 average, suggest an increased chance of low rainfall over North-East Brazil and an increased chance of wet conditions in the African Sahel, consistent with the warmer-than-usual temperatures in the North Atlantic….
The Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy released its 2024 Environmental Policy Index, and the 204 pages illustrate the state of sustainability in 180 countries, according to 58 indicators. The document, full of useful graphics and accessible summaries, presents a world in escalating danger of global heating, pollution, and biodiversity loss. It is well worth skimming. These kinds of climate reports usually seem to me like, overall, much more time was spent making them than people spend reading them…
“Only five countries — Estonia, Finland, Greece, Timor-Leste, and the United Kingdom — cut their GHG emissions at the rate needed to reach zero by 2050….After climate change, biodiversity loss has emerged as the most serious and irreversible environmental crisis….As of 2022, aggregated GHG emissions were falling in 60 countries but still rising in 128…. Human activities, namely the combustion of fossil fuels, of which CO2 is an inevitable byproduct, have caused a nearly 50 percent of the increase in CO2 levels in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution, with atmospheric concentration surpassing 426 parts per million in April 2024 — a level higher than at any point in human history….China, the United States, and India are pivotal, accounting for over half of global GHG emissions…China used more cement in two years (2020 and 2021) than the United States did in the entire twentieth century….Air pollution remains the most serious environmental threat to public health. Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter less than 2.5 µm in diameter (PM2.5) caused 7.8 million premature deaths in 2021, close to 12 percent of global deaths…” -selections from the first third of the report

Mexico saw its first human case of a bird flu strain, H5N2, in a dead man supposedly with no known previous exposure to animals. Two turkey farms got outbreaks in Minnesota, and Iowa’s first dairy farm reported bird flu as well. American health authorities expect H5N1 human cases to rise in the coming weeks. Bird flu was also found in San Francisco last week. Millions of human vaccine doses for bird flu are being prepared for the United States this summer.
Citigroup says the United States is already in a recession, though other institutions disagree. Nevertheless, junk bonds are becoming even more junky, and economists agree that the economy is at least slowing down. Credit card debt is reportedly rising, and the “personal savings rate” has dropped to pre-COVID levels. “America’s debt accumulation over the last seven years is akin to the costs of a world war,” says the article. Cuts to the Federal Reserve interest rate are coming, and the rise of tariffs is unlikely to stop soon. And Europe’s strongest economy, Germany, is not seeing a strong recovery from last year’s recession.
Thousands are starving in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, where Drought and school dropouts have also worsened. Investigators claim in a new report that both sides in the Tigray War committed grave war crimes and “acts of genocide” in the conflict, which ended (on paper, anyway) in November 2022; intercommunal violence continues at a lower intensity.
The American Heart Association released a report projecting the rates of heart illnesses by 2050, and they believe the rate of hypertension among adults will rise from about 51% in 2020 to 61% in 2060. Diabetes rates are expected to jump from about 16% in 2020 to almost 27% in 2050; and obesity rates will expand 17% to over 60%... A number of other heart conditions are expected to worsen as well, though at least high cholesterol rates are expected to decrease.
A 12-page report by Oil Change International says what we all know: most nations are failing to meet climate targets. “Some G7 countries are massively expanding fossil fuel production at home, while others are investing in more fossil fuel infrastructure abroad.” China is, far and away, adding more renewable energy capacity than any other nations on earth, supposedly adding “over 90% of all renewable capacity mentioned in NDCs {nationally determined contributions}” in the 2020s so far.
The U.S. FDA has unanimously recommended a new vaccine be developed to address the JN.1 COVID variant. Vaccine-manufacturers say that a new vaccine could arrive as early as mid-August. A 242-page prepublication report on the long-term dangers of Long COVID, with a view to planning future impacts on Social Security.
“Even individuals with a mild initial course of illness can develop Long COVID with severe health effects….Women are twice as likely as men to experience Long COVID….Long COVID can cause more than 200 symptoms and affects each person differently….There currently is no curative treatment for Long COVID itself. Management of the condition is based on current knowledge about treating the associated health effects and other sequelae….Long COVID symptoms generally improve over time, although preliminary studies suggest that recover can plateau 6-12 months after acute infection. Studies have shown that only 18-22 percent of those who have persistent symptoms at 5-6 months following infection have fully recovered by 1 year. Among those who do not improve, most remain stable, but some worsen.” -selections from the study summary
Germany reported African swine flu in some pigs in the northeast. Monkeypox cases remain in the United States, and at higher rates than last year, despite waning media coverage. And four strains of dengue fever, yes four, are still sweeping through Brazil with no end in sight.
A number of current & former employees at OpenAI are warning of the careless pursuit of dominance of the artificial intelligence arena—and the supposed 70% chance that AI could bring about “doom” for humanity. Some of the computer scientists believe that a general intelligence (AGI) could arrive as soon as 2027—a generation earlier than previous estimates of roughly 2050. "The world isn’t ready, and we aren’t ready," said one dissenting researcher.

The intervention into Haiti is almost ready to go, but gangsters in Haiti have escalated attacks against police in advance of the Kenya-led operation, set to begin in a week or two. “The gangs are just waiting for the Kenyans, they’re just cracking their knuckles and stretching out.…It’s going to be a battle if not a bloodbath of a war, because the gangs are ready,” said one ex-diplomat. A new PM has been installed, Garry Conille, a guy who previously served as PM for 4 about months in 2011-2012. Gangs vying for power control roughly 80% of Port-Au-Prince; will they remain fragmented upon the arrival of an outside coalition, or make an alliance of convenience to oppose police intervention?
Although New Caledonia’s state of emergency has ended, over $1B of damage has been wrought by rioters opposing an expansion of voting rights. Analysts say that the Pacific island’s abundant nickel reserves—essential for France’s renewable energy push—have seen their extraction obstructed by recent events. A curfew remains in place, and social cohesion has been seriously damaged by the protests and the central government’s reactions.
President Biden issued new orders restricting the flow of migrants and asylum-seekers at the Mexico border. At the U.S./Canada border, migrant arrivals have spiked 1000%+ in the last 3 years. Days before the EU election, Portugal instituted stronger controls over immigration. On the Poland/Belarus border, a Polish soldier died, after being stabbed by a migrant from Belarus.
Georgia’s controversial foreign agents bill has been signed into law despite strong protests from the masses. Some call the law a form of Russian hybrid warfare, though Russia contends that allowing foreign media funding functions as a kind of anti-Russian hybrid warfare on its own.
South Korea suspended a military agreement with North Korea over their waste balloons sent into the South. This will result in a more militarized border, outside the DMZ, in the coming months. President Putin is also planning a visit to Pyongyang, which has been long-supplying materiel to Russia for use in Ukraine. A border clash between Chinese and Indian forces took place in their contested mountains—using only sticks and stones.
Conditions in Gaza are said to be “beyond crisis levels” for the 1M+ people who have been displaced from Rafah, as the Israeli advance continues—despite calls from the ICJ to halt the operation. “The sounds, the smells, the everyday life, are horrific and apocalyptic,” said one observer. Killings in the West Bank have now exceeded 500 since October 7, and aid deliveries have sunk 65%+ since the Rafah offensive began. A strike on a school killed 45 people sheltering there, according to Gaza officials. In the coastal settlement of al-Mawasi, where many IDPs moved after the Rafah invasion began, toilets are so scarce that over 4,000 people share a single latrine.
The battlefield is expanding; in some ways, it has always been all-encompassing, and it’s only now that the world is re-learning it. Ukraine has sent soldiers to Syria to fight Wagner Group mercenaries operating in the failed state. Ukraine had earlier intervened in Sudan to combat Russian forces operating in the country. Ukraine also struck an air defense unit inside Russia for the first time, marking another escalation in the War. Russia struck Ukraine’s largest hydroelectric power plant in Dnipro, which is now in “critical condition.” Russia reportedly intends to restart the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant at some point, though international regulators argue that it would be unsafe to turn Europe’s largest nuclear facility online while War still rages around it. Half of Ukraine’s electrical generation has been taken offline. Although weapons are reaching Ukraine’s frontlines, they are not enough to change the tide of the War—and are still outnumbered by Russian soldiers & munitions. Ukraine is also crowd-sourcing 3D-printing drone parts to support their drone fleets—a key part of future modern warfare.
Russia also claims that French military instructors within Ukraine present a lawful military target for Russian forces—and an opportunity to start WWIII. But others believe the flashpoint may come from elsewhere—Taiwan, or the unfolding Israel/Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran conflict, which are intensifying on the Lebanon/Israel border. Russia is also taking over Niger’s uranium reserves, once held by a French corporation. And four Russian sea vessels will be visiting Cuba—but not carrying nuclear weapons.
Around Sudan’s capital, looters, checkpoints, and violence have been established. Several torture chambers have been discovered, and the smell of death hangs in the air of a few neighborhoods, contested by both sides. The number of displaced people is approaching 10M. Russia is supposedly playing both sides to its advantage. “All over Sudan, people are going hungry because they have lost everything, the economy has collapsed, and armed men frequently steal what little aid is available,” said one reporter. The insurgent RSF forces are said to not only be fighting for the future, but fighting over history as well. The National Museum has become a cemetery for RSF fighters. University archives have been burned. And ancient artifacts have been cleared out, sold to mysterious buyers, stashed away in unknown places, or simply destroyed… Other horror stories are still emerging; this article details some of the worst recent tales in the War.
One major NATO supplies provider claims that a decade of arms accumulation is coming, to replenish stockpiles given to Ukraine and in advance of a potential open War between China and whatever western nations decide to participate. China announced its intention to detain vessels moving into its alleged national waters near the Philippines—and presumably to sink those which resist. Ukraine used up six years’ worth of shoulder-fired missiles, like javelins, in just one year. The development of the F-35 will exceed $2T, although the U.S. military is planning on using it less than previously expected. NATO is also planning its rapid-transit troop corridors through Europe to the expected frontlines of a potential open War against Russia.

-It is a common refrain that the education system is a bellwether for Collapse. It is also a symbol—alongside our food system, plastic dependency, state militaries, and many other institutions—of how difficult it apparently is to change course. gorandomify - Randomise JSON based on JSON templates
I wanted a tool that would let me define a JSON template and update only a few keys with specific types of values and lengths. Additionally, it’s crucial that the data falls within user-defined constraints—such as a string being exactly 25 characters long or an integer being between 3000 and 4000. Also, the data can be nested which also needs to be adressed. After failing to find a tool that could do that I decided to create my own tool.

Do try it out and let me know if this helps you as well or raise issues/feature requests. I have also written a short writeup about it if anyone is interested in reading it.

2024.06.09 14:02 QuestionableDialogue Fat vs Sugar Public service announcement.

Understanding the Complexity of Nutrition: Sugar and Fat.

Hey fasting, I have noticed in in everyday life and on reddit there has been very good media influence causing people to have low resolution views of the world around them. man v woman, tall v short, black v white, trump v biden.
In the world of nutrition, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking in binary terms: fat vs. sugar, good vs. bad. However, the reality is far more nuanced. I was hoping to break down the intricacies of how fat and sugar interact in our diets and why it's essential to look beyond simple categorizations.
The False Dichotomy:

The Reality: Both Are Integral to Many Foods.

Food Composition:

The Marketing Manipulation

Conclusion

By moving away from binary thinking and appreciating the complexity of nutrition, we can make more informed dietary choices. Recognize that the combination of sugar and fat in many processed foods contributes to their appeal and caloric density. Understanding this can help us approach our diets with a more balanced perspective, focusing on whole, minimally processed foods that provide comprehensive nutritional benefits.

2024.06.09 13:33 E-Bucketlist Finally Defeated the Collector!

This wipe i’ve made it my goal to collect all the boss gear. I thought it couldn’t be too hard for a solo player, just gotta play smart and kit up. As you can probably already tell, i was wrong.
(This is a long read, scroll to bottom for TLDR)
This weekend I decided i wanted to start my boss farming with the collector gear, get the hardest boss out of the way and then only slightly less suffering for night Island. What proceeded this decision was probably 50-60ish raids of peak highs and rock bottom lows.
The worst part about the Collector is how rare his spawns are, which i get, rare things wouldn’t be rare if they showed up all the time. But surviving about 12 raids in a row and not seeing him starts to grate on you.
He showed up less times (2) than the amount of purple cards out of random containers i pulled (3) looking for him.
The first time i saw him i was caught with my pants down, i had just come off of a raid where i lost a T5, full kit AK Alpha build I graciously traded from another player for the low price of one grenade.
Some how feeling frustrated about losing a kit that cost me nothing, i jumped into a Matka raid naked, just running around looting, i find another trusty grenade and was able to take out another kitted player at the steps of museum.
As i run over to grab his kit the Collector just materialises, i panic, no armor, and a Glock to my name, i hide behind a car and as the collector isn’t the smartest guy, he cant shoot me, but he does periodically edge closer to my side of the car so i just keep circling away from him.
Obviously this is when some street Fenix decide to see what all the commotion is about, now i have to try take them out while still circling this car, fortunately his goons were nowhere to be seen, i took out the Fenix, now it was just me, an almost empty glock and the collector.
I put the last few shots i had into the collectors head through the car windows. i might as well have been throwing paper balls at him. as i last ditch effort, i opened my mic and pleaded for help, at the same time the collector remembered my comments about him not being very smart and pulled off the cleanest juke around the car and one tapped me.
I was in pain, the one time he decides to show up, im on a naked frustration raid. I decided then and there i will have to go kitted every time, even if i lose a great kit. And that mentality led me to finally get the collector.
Cut to today, I had just lost a fully kitted Scar, T5 Armohelmet, stocked bag, the works, great fight but a shame not to have won it. Normally i would run a naked raid after losing a kit like this but I remembered last time, i went right back into my armoury and made up an almost identical kit and jumped right back in.
the raid started like any other, i made my way to the museum, i was able to take out a player on the way there, my spoils being a Makarov. I get to the museum and see a couple normal street fenix making there rounds, i take them both out and make my way into the museum, nothing out of the ordinary.
At this point i assume the collector isnt here as i haven’t really heard anything, so i don’t even check the stage i just run up the stairs in the corner closest to the stage room. As im going up the stairs i hear tons of footsteps like a stampede in my ears, im thinking "huh", i turn around and i see a collector goon!
I dont engage him, i already know im asking for trouble trying to fight him on the stairs, i run to the top of the stairs and down the hallway to a little indented area that has a tan box, i already know the AI gets a little stupid when you position yourself behind a box. My heart rate is climbing, "This is he moment you've been waiting for" is ringing around my head, i am fully kitted and the collector is here, his goons follow after me first, all in a nice straight line for me. My AP Scar makes short work of them.
Then i see my old friend, the collector.
I fumble with my mags and ready a grenade, i've been waiting to put a grenade right between his legs since the moment we first crossed paths, unfortunately for me the nade fell short, but it still did some work, i aim for his head and dumped a full mag of AP into his noggin.
The Collector dropped, i had finally defeated him, but i wasn't in the clear, my shots were silenced but the amount of shots i fired would have brought in the other players like Hyenas. before i could even look at fruits of my labour another play was already here.
A naked i blessed with full goon gear was coming to take what was mine, unfortunately for him, goon guns dont come filled with AP, we square up, i win the fight barely, with only a few ticks of life left, i reach into my bag and make use of my last stim, just enough to get me back to 2/3 health.
I hear the exfil alarm, there would be more players soon, i swap into the collector gear, grab all the mags, green key card and deagle. I also grab a couple goon pistols too for good measure. Now i just need to get out, i creep my way out of the museum, checking my corners. All clear, i had the corner exfil, please just let me cross this street.
Like any good citizen i looked both ways before crossing. I saw a player, my heart stopped. My instincts took over, i raised my new XM and mowed him down in just a few shots. I successfully cross the road, exfil and make a victory noise i dont believe i ever made before.
TLDR: After around 50-60 raids trying to collect the collector i finally defeated him.

2024.06.09 13:24 iamkingsleyf 24 Different Types of Can Openers

Opening cans can be a hassle without the right tool. Having a can opener that is easy to use and reliable at home or on the go.
In this blog post, we’ll explore different types of can openers that will make your life easier.
From manual openers to electric versions, there are plenty of options for everyone.
Read on to learn about the different types of can openers and which one is right for you.

1. Bunker Can Opener

The Bunker can openers are different types of can openers and reliable can openers on the market.
They have a simple, easy design, making them an ideal choice for those who don’t want to bother with more complex models.
These can openers come in two parts: one blade and one handle. To use them, you attach the blade to the top of the can and then grip the handle firmly as you rotate it around the lid.
The blade will puncture the can and then peel away the metal lid.
The handle has a large knob on it, which helps you control the speed at which you turn the opener.
The bunker can openers come in manual and electric models, making them extremely versatile.
Electric models are slightly more expensive than their manual counterparts but are usually much faster and easier to use.
No matter which type of Bunker can opener you choose, it’s sure to make your life easier when it comes time to open cans.
They are durable and will provide years of service, so they are definitely worth the investment.

2. Butterfly Can Opener

The butterfly can opener is an incredibly useful kitchen tool that is perfect for any home cook.
This type of can opener is one of the different types of can openers, with a small, hand-held device with two blades that look like a butterfly's wings.
To use a butterfly can opener, place the top of the can between the two blades and twist the handle in a circular motion to cut open the lid.
The blade will then be able to grab onto the rim of the lid and lift it off.
One of the best things about the butterfly can opener is its size and portability. Because it's so small, it fits easily into a kitchen drawer or utensil caddy.
Additionally, the butterfly can opener does not require much effort to operate, making it great for people with weakened hands or those with arthritis.
The butterfly can opener is also very safe to use, as it doesn't leave sharp edges on the can. This prevents you from getting cuts while you're handling your cans.
Overall, the butterfly can opener is a great tool in your kitchen. It's lightweight, compact, and easy to use, and it provides a safe way to open cans without leaving sharp edges behind.

3. Camp Can Opener

Camp can openers are great for campers and other outdoor enthusiasts who need a reliable tool to open cans.
These openers are lightweight, compact, and easy to store, making them ideal for camping trips.
Camp can openers usually have a folding design that allows them to fit inside a backpack or glove box.
They also come with a carabiner, which can easily be attached to the outside of a bag or belt loop.

2024.06.09 13:20 sameed_a how to improve decision-making with systems thinking?

Last week, I was sitting in my sun-drenched patio, sipping on some cold iced tea, when my buddy, George, called. He was on the brink of a meltdown, close to making a hasty decision that could potentially cost him his job. He's the CEO of a mid-sized company and was facing the classic problem: profit was on the decline, competition was increasing, and under pressure from his board, he was considering firing a chunk of his staff to cut costs.
I told him to calm down and asked, "Have you heard of Systems Thinking?" He glanced at me with a puzzled expression, as though I was talking in alien language. I said, "Systems Thinking means, understanding how things influence one another within a whole. In organizations, it helps you see the bigger picture - the whole system at play, rather than just the parts. If you only focus on individual parts, you might solve the short-term problems but may exacerbate the long-term issues."
So, we sat down that afternoon, doodling on my whiteboard, trying to outline the key elements of his problem. We questioned the function of each department, their interconnections, and their influence on the overall company goals. We also looked at external factors: customer behavior, market conditions, competition strategies, etc.
After mapping out this complex web, George realized that firing people was just a band-aid fix - which might indeed lower costs temporarily but would create other issues like loss of talent and potential decrease in product quality. That might further decrease sales, causing even more problems in the long run.
Instead, he discovered potential solutions from within the system - like cross-training his staff to add value in different areas, redistributing some resources, improving internal communication, and focusing more on customer feedback.
George left my patio that day with a weight lifted off his shoulders and a clear view of his company's system at play. And I, sat back and sipped my now lukewarm iced tea, honored to have been able to share the concept of Systems Thinking with a friend in need.
P.S. This story is purely hypothetical, and any resemblance to real-life Georges is coincidental, but it's a simple way to show the practical application of Systems Thinking. It's like a pair of lenses that allow you to see the world differently, making decision-making less about gut reactions and more about understanding the larger picture. And of course, it's always a good excuse to hang out with your friends on a sunny patio while sipping iced tea!

2024.06.09 12:50 Ok_Message6159 A date made me realize I need to work on myself

I matched with a someone on an app and based on previous experiences, was not expecting much. I never have fun using dating apps. They stress me out and are horrible for self esteem, but at the same time, I like the convenience of them and theres a comfort to feeling like you have more control and having rejection be silent. Also at my age (24 m), dating apps are the standard and my dating history is very limited so it's kinda all I know.
The small talk started and I took it easy. It continued on smoothly and the vibe was there. Didn't dry up at all. As the days went on the conversation became very candid. She was an open book, which made me feel comfortable opening up more. It was the most fulfilling "talking stage" I had had. Growing connection and fondness can be hard to detect through text on a screen but this was an instance where even my dumb ass could tell it was there and reciprocal. I was really starting to enjoy this new person in a genuine way, she felt the same, and we expressed that to each other. And this was new for me
The date we had planned came up and it went as expected. We talked late into the night about the same topics as before, mundane to jokes to deep. The spark I thought might have been there was a little more confirmed. It was also even more open now that we were in person. We reflected the next day and both seemed to be looking forward to doing it again. A couple of days later though, she was under the weather and suddenly became hard to reach. I gave some space for a few days, but the space turned into an insecure mix of fear of ghosts and actual worry for her, so I took a deep breath and checked on her. (This was the first reaction of mine that in retrospect indicated the potentially unhealthy nature of all of this)
I got back a long message where there were a few things expressed:
  1. She realized she needs space to work thru her past trauma more
  2. She thanked me for connecting with her and making her feel good
  3. Shes unsure if we'll ever connect again
For some background, she had told me a lot about a pretty turbulent life, was very personal-development minded, and always said she was grateful that I listened. She described coming a long way
It was probably as mature and pleasant as she could have made it and was full of kind words. I respected that she was so upfront about this. It hurt a lot to read but only thing I could really do in response was let her know I respected it, thank her back, and wish her the best with hopes that we meet again one day. No contact since.
I guess if this made sense, that would be the end of it and I would just be onto the next but it has not at all been that way, at least on my end. She was on my mind a lot in the short ~month long interaction (which flattered her at the time), but that kept momentum after cutting contact, only growing with intensity. I tried to be generous to myself and acknowledge that I was feeling new feelings and that those feelings can't just be shut off all at once. Time rolled on though and it got harder to keep that going as it became clear I was just trying, rather unstably, to balance the need to accept that this is most likely over and the desire to hold onto hope that it's just on pause. I read that last message multiple times and as much as I appreciated everything else, I wasn't able to eke any closure out of it. Whether it was genuinely hard to interpret or I was just convincing myself that it was open ended, I was driving myself crazy whenever I thought about how to move forward from this.
It's been like 6+ months and I'm kind of at the same point. I wouldn't say my life outside of this aspect has been too affected motion wise. If anything the everything else has been pretty satisfactory, but the stuck/uncertain/empty feeling seeps out sometimes. At times I feel embarrassed or immature for still feeling this way about such a small thing, and that's the reason I haven't really talked about it to anyone in my life. I did research and learned that I'm "limerent" for her. That term has really put into perspective how I've responded to this.
It's obviously an harmful state to stay in. I also really hate that this whole positive and negative "balance" I've been doing turns someone's self improvement into some kind of key to thing I want, when the first thing (whatever the outcome of the second) should be the focus. As I reflect a bit it makes me realize that I have stuff I need to deal with myself, beyond this.
Eventually I want to be done with this, get closure if it falls in my lap and/or move on. I can't move on right now because I have the fear of my hopes somehow becoming true and making me regret doing so. Even if that's delusional, the very fact that it actually stops me itself is enough indication I'm not ready. I want to shut off the daydreaming and move towards getting what I daydream about even if its not exactly the same.
This was a very long drawn out catharsis and sorry about that, but if any one has advice, I would appreciate. What are some general methods for moving on? I am definitely considering therapy, because I think this is all just an iceberg tip of other things deep down that I have also thought about lately. Also been making an effort to keep up with my hobbies, especially music which helps a lot with letting things out. Anyone ever been in a similar situation, and how did it go for you? Am I being too hard on my self or too gentle?
Thanks for reading
Tl;dr I matched with someone on an dating app, we had a great connection, had one date, and later she told me she isn't ready yet to date due to trauma she's still working on. We cut contact but I haven't been able to move on for months and it's made me realize I also need time to work on stuff

2024.06.09 12:36 Ordinary_Purp_Hayes Finding a burned body in a random backyard.

I can’t really remember how old I was, maybe 12 or 13, but I was at my aunts house for the weekend. And me and my big group of cousins (who were around my same age, some a little older, some younger) took our regular trip to the park inside my aunts neighborhood. After maybe a half hour to an hour being there, we were in the middle of playing a game of “the floor is lava” on the park set, I realized less and less of my cousins were playing the game and it was more neighborhood kids that I was playing with instead.
After a few more minutes pass one of my cousins start calling me over to the wall he was sitting on. He was telling me to come look at something as he was facing the direction of the backyard he was looking into; I get to the wall and look over and the first thing I notice is majority of my cousins and some neighborhoods kids were already over there, and the second thing I notice is this lifeless burned body that they were standing around and it was still smoking a little (almost like it happened not too long before we found it). I hopped all the way over the wall and walked over there and immediately started asking what happened (not in a panicked manner but more so very subtle and in awe), everybody is saying they don’t know and since I was one of the last to walk over there I started to ask them if they did it but they immediately said no of course lol.
Since we were all so young it was such an unserious moment for us, and it was something we weren’t supposed to be witnessing at all at that age. But given that, we started saying that it wasn’t a real body, and one of my cousins went as far as dropping a brick on the stomach to further examine if it was a real body. After he did that I did a further look at the face and chest area…that was indeed a real body.
After a few more minutes being back there one of the neighborhood kids shouted over to us “hey the back door is open!.” And knowing what type of time my cousins were on they followed him inside the house with zero questions asked. I stayed behind for a little still looking at the body a little longer but I eventually followed them inside the house. I don’t know if they took anything but I remember standing in the middle of the this living room just looking at all these kids just rummaging through stuff and feeling wrong about the whole thing. And this feeling that something (spiritually) was there with us, it was a very heavy feeling that wouldn’t leave until the moment I left back out the house.
We ended up going straight back to my aunts house after, and we all ran in the house just blurting out what happened all at once. And after she was able to calm us all down we finally let her know what happened. It was such a crazy thing to happen to us all, I think I remember some of the neighborhood kids following us back and helped us explain the story and some of them my aunt NEVER met but this event brought them to her.
Later that day (maybe 2 or 3 hours later), we walked back to the house and the police and NEWS people were there and the street that the house was on was cut off. Only thing we were thinking about though was the NEWS being there so we ran back to my aunts and turned on the NEWS channel to see if they knew what happened (and also to see if they found little kid fingerprints everywhere lmao). Supposedly someone originally reported a house fire, but they got there to discover it was body still smoking in the backyard, after getting in contact with friends and family they also discovered they had went missing some days before that, which ultimately helped them rule it a sicide. Which never really sat well with me, because the back door being open, the body being burned in the back yard…like nothing screamed sicide to me, at least not at that age of understanding.
Another key thing that helped me remember this traumatic experience was when we went to sleep that night, we all slept in the living room (me and my cousins) and one of my older cousins woke up crying in the middle of the night and her mom (my aunt) comforted her and let her know it would be okay. Versus when I was finally able to open up to my mom about it after coming back home and being pretty creeped out and broken by it, she told me straight up “it’s your fault because you shouldn’t have been in peoples back yards”…I’m not gonna say I hated my mom or anything after that but since that day I’ve saw her in a different light for sure.
Another thing that bothers me is this very brief article that answered none of the thousand questions going through my head as I was witnessing was I witnessing in that moment:

This section contains my client management templates that make dealing with difficult clients a breeze. Get rid of 99% of the headaches, stress and anxiety freelancers face when working with clients.
  • Get your money from clients who “forget” to pay you when you HAVEN’T used a contract beforehand (this is a tough one to crack for most freelancers – but this approach has never failed me)
  • Keep getting paid even IF your client’s budget is running low and thinks they need to cut you off (this happens all the time to freelancers; and if you know how to dodge it, you can keep your clients while others lose theirs)
  • Deal with clients who miss payments repeatedly by sending them a simple, polite, and massively effective 4-email sequence
  • Deal with clients who shamelessly request extra work without wanting to increase the budget
  • Deal with clients who ask you to track your HOURS by convincing them to pay you per project instead (which is how you should ALWAYS be charging)
  • And a bunch more
PART 05

SCALING YOUR BUSINESS

If you're the kind of person who'd rather gargle gasoline than floss daily, listen up.
Waterpik claims their Sonic-Fusion 2.0 does the dirty work for you, combining sonic brushing and water flossing in one unholy union of oral hygiene.
But can it really deliver on this promise, or is it just another overpriced gadget waiting to gather dust on your bathroom counter?

Update:

BEST PRICE on the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0 here:

My Two Cents on the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0

Let's get one thing straight: I'm not one for gimmicks.
I've seen enough "revolutionary" dental products to last a lifetime, and most of them end up as chew toys for my dog. But the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0 piqued my interest. The idea of a toothbrush that flosses for you is as appealing as a bottomless glass of whiskey.
Fresh out of the box, this thing looks like a prop from a sci-fi movie. It's sleek, futuristic, and a little intimidating. But don't let its appearance fool you. The Sonic-Fusion 2.0 is surprisingly user-friendly, even for a technophobe like myself. The controls are intuitive, and the different modes are easy to switch between.
After a few weeks of use, I can honestly say that this thing is a game-changer. My teeth feel cleaner than they have in years, and my gums are no longer a war zone. I'm even starting to enjoy my daily brushing routine, which is a miracle in itself.

Key Features

Now, let's get down to the nitty-gritty. What makes the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0 so damn special?
3-in-1 Functionality: This bad boy isn't just a toothbrush; it's a flossing toothbrush and a water flosser. You can brush, floss, or do both simultaneously, all with the push of a button. Talk about efficiency.
Sonic Power: The Sonic-Fusion 2.0 boasts 30,000 brush strokes per minute, which is enough to blast away plaque like a sandblaster. And unlike traditional brushing, it reaches deep between teeth and below the gumline.
Customizable Water Flossing: With 10 pressure settings, you can adjust the water flosser to your liking. Start low if you're new to water flossing, then gradually increase the pressure as your gums get used to it.
Built-In Timer: This handy feature ensures you're brushing and flossing for the dentist-recommended two minutes. It even pauses every 30 seconds to remind you to switch quadrants. Nice.

Pros

Superior Cleaning: This thing cleans your teeth and gums like no other toothbrush I've ever used. It's like having a dental hygienist in your bathroom.
Time-Saver: Combining brushing and flossing into one step cuts your oral care routine in half.
Gum Health: If you suffer from bleeding or receding gums, the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0 can help improve your gum health and reduce inflammation.
User-Friendly: Despite its futuristic appearance, this toothbrush is surprisingly easy to use and maintain.

Cons

Price: The Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0 is definitely an investment. It's not cheap, but in my opinion, it's worth every penny.
Learning Curve: Water flossing takes some getting used to, and it can be messy at first. But once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze.
Bulkiness: This toothbrush is larger than a traditional electric toothbrush, so it might not be ideal for travel.
Noise: The water flosser can be a bit loud, but it's not deafening. If you're sensitive to noise, it might be a minor annoyance.

The Final Verdict: Is the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0 Worth It?

If you're serious about your oral health and hate flossing, the Waterpik Sonic-Fusion 2.0 is a no-brainer. It's the most effective and efficient oral care tool I've ever used, and it's made a noticeable difference in the health of my teeth and gums.
Yes, it's pricey, but consider it an investment in your smile. And trust me, your dentist will thank you.

2024.06.09 11:21 Infinite-Barracuda97 Dreo Evaporative Air Cooler Review: This Might Save Your Summer (and Sanity)

Dreo Evaporative Air Cooler Review: This Might Save Your Summer (and Sanity)
https://preview.redd.it/xr1e9bgrki5d1.jpg?width=1792&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5552bf3ed917d660380960568dca12ec0c7f06d5
Fed up with noisy fans and sky-high AC bills?
This unassuming swamp cooler might just be the answer to your summer prayers.
Dreo, the brand known for its sleek and functional designs, has stepped into the evaporative air cooler game with its 40" model. This isn't your grandma's swamp cooler – it's a modern take on a classic concept, promising quiet operation, powerful cooling, and user-friendly features.
But does it deliver?
Buckle up, because we're about to dive deep into the sweaty heart of summer and find out.

Update:

BEST PRICE on the Dreo Evaporative Air Cooler here:
https://amzn.to/3RjN0WB

First Impression

First things first: this thing is a looker.
Dreo's design team clearly had a good day when they dreamed this up.
It's sleek, modern, and won't look like an eyesore in your living room. But as we all know, looks can be deceiving.
Thankfully, the Dreo doesn't disappoint when it comes to performance.
Right out of the box, I was struck by how quiet it is. I've had my fair share of noisy fans that sound like a 747 taking off, so this was a welcome change. The setup was a breeze – even a guy like me could figure it out. So far, so good.

Key Features

Powerful Cooling with a Wide Reach: The Dreo boasts a 40" fan with an 80° oscillation, meaning it can cool a surprisingly large area. While it won't replace your AC on the hottest days, it does a damn good job of providing relief in smaller spaces or supplementing your existing cooling system.
Whisper-Quiet Operation: I'm not exaggerating when I say this thing is quiet. The crossflow impeller wheel design does wonders for noise reduction, making it perfect for bedrooms or offices where you need peace and quiet.
Humidifying Function: Unlike traditional fans that just blow hot air around, this swamp cooler actually adds moisture to the air. This is a godsend in dry climates or during winter months when the air gets stale.
Easy to Maintain: The removable water tank, cooling pad, and rear grille make cleaning a breeze. No need to wrestle with complicated parts or tools – just a quick rinse and you're good to go.
Ice Packs for Extra Chill: If you're looking for an extra blast of coolness, the included ice packs can be added to the water tank for even lower temperatures. This is a nice touch for those sweltering summer days.

Pros

Quiet as a Mouse: Seriously, this thing is practically silent. If you're sensitive to noise, you'll appreciate this feature.
Effective Cooling: While it won't turn your room into a meat locker, it does a great job of lowering the temperature and making you feel more comfortable.
Humidifying Bonus: The added humidity is a welcome relief in dry climates and helps prevent that stuffy feeling you get with regular fans.
User-Friendly Design: From the easy setup to the simple controls, this swamp cooler is designed with the user in mind.

Cons

No product is perfect, and the Dreo has a couple of minor drawbacks:
Not a Replacement for AC: If you live in a scorching hot climate, this swamp cooler won't cut it on its own. It's best suited for milder temperatures or as a supplement to your AC.
Humidity Can Be a Double-Edged Sword: While the added humidity is great for some, it might be too much for others, especially in humid climates.

Final Thoughts

So, is the Dreo Evaporative Air Cooler worth your hard-earned cash? If you're looking for a quiet, efficient, and user-friendly way to beat the heat, then absolutely.
It's perfect for bedrooms, offices, or smaller spaces where you need a little extra cooling power.Just don't expect it to replace your AC on those days when the sun is trying to melt your face off.

2024.06.09 11:03 greydorothy Consent Crash Course, as relevant to Chapter 167

Wow, 167 was a pretty great chapter of Chainsaw Man Part 2! This is a fascinating new development between our two leads, simultaneously being gross, awkward, and morally dubious. I can’t wait to see what other people are feeling about this chapter, so let’s log onto reddit and/or twitter, and…
Oh, ok. While my expectations for online fandoms are in hell, the reactions to this chapter have managed to limbo under that bar. There’s a lot that’s frustrating, from the gooners to the puriteens, but what’s most concerning is some of the talk about consent. Y’know, when I started studying at uni everyone had to take a course about consent, which was pretty easy to pass, and I was shocked at how some people managed to fail it. Seeing some of the discourse about consent between Denji/Yoru/Asa has made things a bit more depressing, with some comments making me concerned about the commenters ever entering a sexual situation. So, let me give you a crash course on desire and consent, partially to predict what may happen next, but mostly because jesus christ some of you need to read this.
TL;DR: what happened in 167 was definitely some level of non-consent, which is kinda fucked up. The potential for future character drama off of this encounter is extremely interesting

Part 1: What consent do?

OK, in sex every single participant should actively want to be there, and should be OK with every deed they do, with no coercion or deception involved. If that isn’t the case, there’s a special four-letter word for that. Correspondingly, every participant should want to know what everyone else feels during sex, to avoid stepping on that particular landmine.
While you technically can have consensual sex without establishing verbal consent, this is risky and potentially dangerous as you can’t fully rely on body language - you may infer something from your partner that they do not necessarily mean. There have been more than a few situations IRL where one person assumes something that the other does not want, leading to horrible outcomes. Therefore, you should establish verbal consent during sex, so everyone can have a safe and fun time. Also, past consent does not guarantee future consent - if you had a good time with someone last night, they might not be up for it tonight for any number of reasons (e.g. having mental issues), and you should respect that. Similarly, consent to one act is not carte-blanche consent to any other act. In addition, and I cannot believe I need to say this, it is possible for a partner to orgasm even if they do not want to be having sex.
Some of the biggest dipshits online take this as “do you need to sign a contract at every step to establish consent??? Smh my head liberals gone woke”, which a) I do not want to be alone in a room with those fuckers and b) establishing consent doesn’t need to be an ordeal! You can literally say “you good?” and get confirmation from that. Even if it does slightly interrupt your flow (and, from experience, it doesn’t actually do that), it’s infinitely better to be safe than sorry.
There is also the very important aspect of “without coercion”. If the other person has been put in this situation by force or implied punishment - e.g. if they wouldn’t be given a promotion without participating, or if you held a knife to their dick - then even if they say the words “yes I want to have sex”, you definitely shouldn’t! Similar for deception - if you lie about who you are, or what you’re doing (e.g. ‘stealthing’ condoms which is legit sickening), that’s genuinely fucked up. Basically, be a functional human being about this, have sex with people who want to have sex with you.
Right - consent crash course done, you passed, good for you, here’s your course credits. See also here for a good run-down. You now know what to do if you are in a sexual situation in real life, hooray. However, fiction is all about drama, often in messed-up situations, so…

Part 2: Consent in 167, or “wow this is fucked from multiple angles”

To the chapter itself! It’s a really interesting exploration of desire, how feelings can manifest themselves, and how these manifestations can be unhealthy. Let’s establish the dynamics amongst our three participants, and run through the situation:
There is a level of ambiguity to what happened in the chapter, due to the nature of the drawings, and to the lack of verbal communication after the initial kiss. However, following our rules, we can reasonably infer what was happening:
So yeah, this is a fucked up situation! I do not think it is wrong to say that Yoru is a grapist. To be 100% clear, this is pretty fantastic in terms of character drama, and I am extremely interested in seeing how each participant will react in future. I imagine that even if Denji was into it towards the end he might be weirded out/feeling like he was taken advantage of (potentially feeling betrayed when the Asa/Yoru split comes to light), Asa will most likely feel violated, and Yoru’s just kinda eating popcorn in the background. The fact that Asa and Denji are actually into each other will make things even more complicated. Ultimately, the Asa/Denji relationship will almost certainly be put on the rocks from this, and it’ll be a significant struggle to repair it, so we have a lot of drama potential in play.
Whatever the case, I imagine that the ramifications of this are not going to be fully explored within the span of the next chapter. We’ll most likely see the initial reactions, which could run the whole gamut from angry to shocked to grossed-out to embarrassed. The full feelings of each character may only emerge in the later stages of this part! One thing we DEFINITELY won’t see is each character turning to the audience and directly explaining their feelings and emotional state. This is because Fujimoto has faith in his audience, which frankly is very optimistic of him, but even so the next few chapters will be very interesting

2024.06.09 11:00 John_Swift1 SHRM Instructor's Top 20 Test Tips

  1. Time commitment. People who have succeeded on the SHRM certification exam report investing between 120 to 160 hours in their preparation. (That's a solid month: four weeks at 40 hours a week.) You might spend as little as 60 hours or as much as 180 hours—adjust as needed. But remember that hours alone aren't a guarantee of success; the time needs to be well-spent. Keep this in mind as you build your study plan. Look for moments you can steal—use your lunch break to work online in the SHRM Learning System, go out to your car and read a little, and never be without your flashcards (more on that below). It all adds up.
  2. Practice questions. The more practice questions you answer, the better prepared you'll be. Some of my students have found non-SHRM resources like study apps Quizlet and Kahoot to be helpful in this area.
  3. Explanations of answers. The online SHRM Learning System has many practice questions for both the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP practice module exams and finals. After you answer the questions, you'll see explanations for why the correct answers are correct and why the others are wrong. This will help you refine your thinking.
  4. No shortcuts. A word of warning: While practice exams are helpful, they're not a replacement for studying and learning. Some students become overconfident when they repeatedly take practice exams and see their scores improving—but they aren't learning the content, they're just memorizing those exams! Don't mislead yourself. You've got to do the reading, attend the classes, take notes and study them. On this exam (as in life!), there are no shortcuts to success.
  5. Flashcards. Become best friends with your flashcards. Whether you choose to print them out and cut them up or download them to an e-reader, always have them with you. That way, you can make good use of small bits of unexpected available time—waiting for a meeting to begin, standing in line at the store, etc. Flashcards help you remember concepts and definitions. If you understand a concept and know a definition, you've got a shot at answering an exam question correctly. (Flashcards are not enough on their own. But if you don't know a concept or definition when you're taking the exam, your chances of answering a question correctly are low.)
  6. Learning through stories. Throughout history, humanity has always learned through stories, whether sharing ancient lore around a fire or tales from a pulpit. People retain lessons when they can connect to them. Knowing the story behind SHRM exam content can be helpful as well. For example, there are stories behind key employment laws and court cases. What happened to Willie Griggs that made Griggs v. Duke Power a landmark decision? Why is what happened to the namesake of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act relevant today? While the SHRM certification exams won't test you on such stories per se, you might encounter related questions. If knowing the stories helps you retain the knowledge, search online and read all about them.
  7. Discussions and study groups.SHRM Connect is an online community for SHRM members to discuss all kinds of HR topics. Search for the "SHRM Certification Prep Group." For those of you who like to work in a study group, you might be able to find or start one in your area using this platform. Plus, it's a good networking opportunity—a double payoff.
  8. Now that you've read some tips on test preparation, here are a few tips for test taking: Trial run. A tutorial available on Prometric's website allows you to try out the test-taking platform before you take the actual test. Do a generic mini-test to use the highlight, strikethrough and flag functions and more. Becoming familiar with the system before the day of the exam will improve your confidence greatly.
  9. Long questions. It's easy to get distracted by all the information in situational judgment test items or long narrative questions on the exam. Stop to identify what the question truly is. Be sure to pick out the exact question you're being asked to answer.
  10. Multipart questions. If you encounter a block of text on the exam followed by multiple questions relating to it, different parts of that text will be useful for answering different questions. Use the highlight function to mark what stands out to you—what is relevant to each question—one by one. Erase the highlight when you've answered the question, then highlight the new material that relates to the next question and so on.
    1. HR means action! In the modern era of HR, we are expected to get things done and make things happen, to be proactive partners and leaders in our organizations—not sit and wait to be told what to do. The exam reflects this. Look for answers in which you are expected to act.
    2. Use the strikethrough function and other tools that help you focus. Strike through "distractors," which are answers you believe to be incorrect. Eliminating incorrect options improves your focus on the remaining options, which may increase your chances of selecting the correct answer. Learn how to use strikethrough with the tutorial available on Prometric's website (requires Adobe Flash Player version 10.2.0 or later) and practice using the test-taking system before your exam date.
    3. Use the flag function. Not sure what the answer is? Mark the question with a flag so you can return to it later. As you warm up through the exam, you may pick up hints from other questions and answers, or some piece of critical knowledge may get knocked loose from your memory, and you'll be able to come back to the flagged item. (How to use flags is something else you'll learn on the Prometric tutorial.)
    4. Use the calculator. You don't have to do math in your head. There's a built-in calculator, so use it. (Practice using the calculator, too, on the Prometric tutorial.)
    5. Use scratch paper. Scratch paper is provided by the testing center, so use it. Capture things while they are still in your short-term memory. Writing things down helps you see what you're doing, so scratch paper can also be useful for completing math calculations even if you use the calculator.
    6. Know HR math processes. While we're discussing calculations, keep in mind that the four multiple-choice answers offered for a math question will often reflect how the numbers in the question itself are used. For example, if the question involves the numbers 4 and 3, the answers to choose from might be: 7 (4 plus 3); 1 (4 minus 3); 12 (4 multipliedby3); or 1.3 (4 dividedby 3). Learn the processes required for HR math.
    7. Look for differentiator words in the questions. When you see differentiators—"least," "best," "quickest," "most important" and so on—use them to guide your analysis. These words require you to distinguish between a pretty good answer and the best answer.
    8. Approach absolutes in the answers with caution. When you see absolutes—"all," "always," "only," "never" and the like—beware! Absolutes in HR are unlikely and are just as unlikely to be correct answers on the exam. After all, how many things have you encountered in your career that are always or never true?
    9. Answer every question. Not answering is a bad idea: Don't leave questions unanswered. There's no penalty if you answer incorrectly—points are not taken away—so take a guess. It can't hurt, and you might guess correctly. (Of course, if you think you can guess your way through the whole exam, guess again! Refer to the very first test tip in Part 1, which discusses how many hours of preparation time you should plan for.)
    10. Watch your time. Keep your eye on the timer at the top of your screen. Don't dwell on one question for too long; in doing so, you might run out of time, sacrificing your chances of answering other questions correctly later.
