Advice re chip and pin fraud in Brazil.
We were in Copacabana on the day of the Madonna concert, my wife wanted to buy a Madonna t-shirt and I inquired the price of the t-shirt, they said it would be 50 Brazilian Real and I told them I will need to come back with cash and they advised they accept card.
I didn't think it be an issue, in the back of my head, I was thinking of using Apple Pay but unsure if I wanted to take out my phone only for someone to steal my iPhone! So I figured to use my Curve card, it was the only card I had on me and didn't think it would be an issue because I have travelled in the past with it e.g. USA, Thailand and the Philippines.
50 Real was the number on the terminal and I had the terminal in hand (left hand covering the pin pad, right hand entering pin), the initial transaction failed and they showed me it didn't go through with the 'error' message, they blamed poor signal and will try again on another terminal. Highly doubtful they would have had someone surfing my shoulder to obtain the pin because my wife was next to me and she said there was no one behind us.
The initial person was quite chit-chatty whilst the other person was trying to get the transaction go through, I never entered the card into the other terminal nor pin, they gave my card back and said it went through (which was strange because I never entered my pin) and quickly moved on.
Walking back to the hotel, I wanted to get wifi access to check my account, 5 transactions totalling £6k/ 2 minutes.
Waiting on Curve to complete their investigation but the initial reply was it's not fraud because it's a chip and pin transaction and consider the chargeback process.

• Historical Move v Implied Move: We determine the historical volatility (log variance of daily gains) of the underlying asset and compare that to the current implied volatitlity (IV) of the option price. This is used to determine the Call or Put Premium associated with the pricing of options (implied volatility).
• Directional Bias: Ranges from negative (bearish) to positive (bullish) and accounts for RSI, price trend, moving averages, and put/call skew over the past 6 weeks.
• Priced Move: given the current option prices, how much in dollar amounts will the underlying have to move to make the call/put break even. This is how much vol the option is pricing in. The expected move.
• Expiration: 2024-05-17.
• Call/Put Premium: How much extra you are paying for the implied move relative to the historic move. Low numbers mean options are "cheaper." High numbers mean options are "expensive."
• Efficiency: This factor represents the bid/ask spreads and the depth of the order book relative to the price of the option. It represents how much traders will pay in slippage with a round trip trade. Lower numbers are less efficient than higher numbers.
• E.R.: Days unitl the next Earnings Release. This feature is still in beta as we work on a more complete list of earnings dates.
• Why isn't my stock on this list? It doesn't have "weeklies", the underlying is "too cheap", or the options markets are too illiquid (open interest) to qualify for this strategy. 480 underlyings are used in this report and only the top results end up passing the criteria for each filter.

Long story short, after a routine keyhole surgery back in 2014, to pin some loose cartilage, I ended up contracting MRSA, sepsis (leading to septic arthritis) and osteomyelitis.
Due to the trauma caused by the infections, it left me with an auto-fusion of the knee. It is fused at about 160 degree angle so I have custom made insoles to keep my hips aligned.
For years, my consultant didn't want to operate as the infection reoccurrance rate was too high. Recently, he is telling me that I could now have an operation. Current options include a TKR or amputation.
TKR would perhaps give me a 90° flexion which would allow me to sit in a chair (e.g., on a bus, theatre, concert). The concerning thing he said was that he could guarantee that if I went for this option, it would lead to an amputation before the end of my life. Why? He didn't really explain.
The question is, I understand knee replacements/revisions usually last around 15 years and you can often get away with 3 surgery's in total. After your "final" knee replacement, what happens then? If you can't have any more revision surgery, do you just like with the pain of the deteriorating knee joint or is an amputation always guaranteed once you can't have any more revisions? Or, would my knee just auto-fuse itself again?

So, a current app I'm working on requires a map to be rendered with a pin (fairly simple stuff).
The problem I have is my app is on Capacitor 6, but the official maps plugin is still on Capacitor 5 (it says 6 on the docs, but it's not).
So I started looking into othecommunity map plugins. But then a thought occurred, why not just use a normal Google map from the Google Maps SDK for JavaScript?
From what I gather online, it works, but there are some performance drawbacks.
So, has anyone used both, and if so what is your personal experience? At what point would the plugin be a better choice than just using a normal map (like you would on a website for e.g)?

Unlike a centralized server operated by a single company or organisation, decentralized storage systems consist of a peer-to-peer network of user-operators who hold a portion of the overall data, creating a resilient file storage sharing system. These can be in a blockchain-based application or any peer-to-peer-based network.
The Electroneum Smart Chain itself can be used as a decentralized storage system, and it is when it comes to code storage in all the smart contracts. However, when it comes to large amounts of data, that isn’t what the Electroneum Smart Chain was designed for. The chain is steadily growing and every node on the network needs to be able to store all of the data. If the chain were to expand to large amounts of data (say 5TBs) it wouldn’t be feasible for all nodes to continue to run.
Due to these constraints, we need a different chain or methodology to store large amounts of data in a decentralized way.
When looking at decentralized storage (dStorage) options, there are a few things a user must keep in mind.

• Persistence mechanism / incentive structure
• Data retention enforcement
• Decentrality
• Consensus

Persistence Mechanism / Incentive Structure
Blockchain-based
For a piece of data to persist forever, we need to use a persistence mechanism. For example, on the Electroneum Smart Chain, the persistence mechanism is that the whole chain needs to be accounted for when running a node. New pieces of data get tacked onto the end of the chain, and it continues to grow - requiring every node to replicate all the embedded data.
This is known as blockchain-based persistence.
The issue with blockchain-based persistence is that the chain could get far too big to upkeep and store all the data feasibly (e.g. many sources↗ estimate the Internet to require over 40 Zetabytes of storage capacity).
The blockchain must also have some type of incentive structure. For blockchain-based persistence, there is a payment made to the validator. When the data is added to the chain, the validators are paid to add the data on.
Contract-based
Contract-based persistence has the intuition that data cannot be replicated by every node and stored forever, and instead must be upkept with contract agreements. These are agreements made with multiple nodes that have promised to hold a piece of data for a period of time. They must be refunded or renewed whenever they run out to keep the data persisted.
In most cases, instead of storing all data on-chain, the hash of where the data is located on a chain gets stored. This way, the entire chain doesn’t need to scale to keep all of the data.
Additional considerations
IPFS↗is a distributed system for storing and accessing files, websites, applications, and data. It doesn’t have a built-in incentive scheme, but can instead be used with any of the contract-based incentive solutions above for longer-term persistence. Another way to persist data on IPFS is to work with a pinning service, which will “pin” your data for you. You can even run your own IPFS node and contribute to the network to persist your and/or other’s data for free!
Data Retention
In order to retain data, systems must have some sort of mechanism to make sure data is retained.
Challenge mechanism
One of the most popular ways to make sure data is retained, is to use some type of cryptographic challenge that is issued to the nodes to make sure they still have the data. A simple one is looking at Arweave’s proof-of-access. They issue a challenge to the nodes to see if they have the data at both the most recent block and a random block in the past. If the node can’t come up with the answer, they are penalized.
Consensus
Most of these tools have their own version of a consensus mechanism but generally they are based on either proof-of-work (PoW) or proof-of-stake (PoS).

Hello all, We're developing some solar panels for a CubeSat mission, and I just had a few questions about some general design decisions as electrical engineering was not my original field (hence a few weird gaps in knowledge). I figured this question might fit here a bit better than one of the EE subs.
 
My first is about the cabling and grounding scheme of several different circuits (e.g. solar cells, peripheral sensors, external programming/charging interfaces, etc.). As we do not want to introduce any magnetic torques that would interfere with attitude control, ideally any (ground) loops should be avoided. In the image here are several different configurations; I would just like to confirm that my thinking is correct:

• Configuration A) seems like the ideal one to work with. having several different grounds on the PCB and tightly coupled to their respective V_* trace.
  
• Configuration B) is less ideal. Each circuit shares the same ground, but each cable also includes this ground pin in their cabling.
  
• Configuration C) is the worst. Each circuit shares the same ground, but it is only routed along one cable.
  

 
My second question is about the trace layout for solar cells, and similarly how to best avoid loops. See the example configurations in the image here using a two-layer PCB. Do any of these seem viable, or is there an alternative method? I figure these different configurations also have some implications for thermal design.

• Configuration A) seems like the worst one to use with discrete V_cell and ground traces. The traces laid out would create a wide loop with the solar cells.
  
• Configuration B) seems okay, with a single ground plane. If the ground plane is on the bottom layer there is a gap the width of the PCB between the plane and cells. If only one plane is used, would it be better to have it on the top layer with the cells? I don't think making it a ground or power plane makes much difference here.
  
• Configuration C) seems like it would also work, with both a ground plane and power plane. However there is still the gap between layers (width of the PCB).

I would LOVE to post nothing but 9,345,867 words about airships (heavy breathing) BUT, I'm trying to restrain myself. So let's talk weather (etc) and any hopes and whatnot we might have!
The following are a few things (any or all! ) that i think would be neat/interesting. (Naturally 99.9% of this is based on assumptions, but we're at "where is Jimmy Hoffa's body" level of information.) (for anyone not old enough for that reference, it means we know it (LNF) exists, S O M E W H E R E .... and that's all.)

• Assuming gardening/farming is a thing (or even just foraging) I think that weather affecting the growth of crops (or some only being found in) certain weather (biomes as well, but that's generally a thing). Like say, a flower that only blooms in a lightning storm, or a fruit that only ripens in a blizzard etc.
• Construction that fits the area it is in (preferably an option, not forced) such as stone or wooden structures in temperate forests, adobe/plastestone in desserts etc etc.
• This is not weatheclimate/biome, but for the love of all things, a compass. A map (preferably one that we have to fill in my exploring, with pins and such we can share with others)

I have others, but it's working on 4am, and I'm dozing off at my desk.

We talk about passwords a lot (common passwords and password strategies) but we don't talk about pins as much.
This week on his podcast Steve Gibson talked a little about pins. Here are the show notes. He cited a summary of 3.4 million real-world 4-digit pins (from data breaches) plotted in graphic form with first 2 pin digits on vertical axis (scaled 0 to 99) and 2nd 2 digits on the horizontall axis (also scaled 0 to 99) as shown in this graphic
The bright colors are more frequent. You can see a bright diagonal line, which means people are prone to making the 3rd and 4th digits a repeat of the first and 2nd (for example 4747). And the brightest points on that diagonal line are where all 4 digits are the same like 0000, 2222, 7777, 8888. And also 6969.
There is also a bright horizontal line with vertical values 19 or 20 representing years (probably birth years) with the highest concentration being around 1965 to 1990.
And there's a bright horizontal rectangle between 1-12 on the vertical axis and 1-31 on the horizontal axis probably representing mostly birthdays in form MMDD. And a ligher vertical rectangle between 1-12 on horizontal axis and 1-31 on vertical axis representing birthdays in the form DDMM
But the real kicker, out of those 10,000 possible 4 digit pins, the top 20 most-common pins (0.2%) make up 27% of pins in the set. Those top 20 are: 1234 0000 7777 2000 2222 9999 5555 1122 8888 2001 1111 1212 1004 4444 6969 3333 6666 1313 4321 1010.
There are a variety of pin applications with different requirements and considerations. But using something like a birth year or birt day probably isn't a good idea. You could generate a random numeric pin using the bitwarden password generator and unchecking everything except for digits. You may want it to be memorable though. People may have a variety of ways to extract obscure memorable numbers from real life or invent memorable numbers...

I'll share one way I came up with to generate memorable pin numbers (or at least re-creatable, as long as you remember the seed word):

1. Come up with a seed word that has the same number of letters as your desired pin.
2. Convert every letter to a number by its position in the alphabet (A=1, B=2... Z=26)
   • For example if your letter is L that corresponds to 12
3. Multiply each number by 3 ^(*)Note1
   • same example, 3*12 = 36
4. Take the last digit of each number, that is the corresponding pin digit.
   • same example, last digit of 36 is 6
5. Put all the pin digits together

That procedure maps the letters to numbers as follows:

• A=3
• B=6
• C=9
• D=2
• E=5
• F=8
• G=1
• H=4
• I=7
• J=0
• K=3
• L=6
• M=9
• N=2
• O=5
• P=8
• Q=1
• R=4
• S=7
• T=0
• U=3
• V=6
• W=9
• X=2
• Y=5
• Z=8

As you can see it spreads the 26 letters out over the 10 digits pretty well (there are 4 digits assigned 2 characters each and 6 digits assigned 3 characters each).
As an example if my word is WARDEN, then my pin would be 934252
It's not great from an entropy perspective. A 6 digit random pin represents one of a million possible 6 digit pins, but my 6 digit example could be derived from one word "warden" which is probably among the 8000 most common words. But personally I take a tiny bit of credit for obscurity of the method (at least until I posted it on reddit, whoops) and it's not like this is a master password (typically a pin is backed up by physical security).... and more importantly this can give a pin which is memorable /recreatable and sometimes that factors into the decision.
(*)Note1 - You could use the same procedure multiplying by 7 (instead of 3), and the 26 letters would again spread out pretty well over the 10 digits... but the multiplication is a bit harder. Or you could multiply by 1 (instead of 3) and the multiplication is trivial and the letters would again spread out over the digits... but in that case the procedure is less obscure.
Take it or leave it, it's just a thought.

My wife got her Polestar and I admit I'm smitten. The China tariff thing is upsetting me because I really wanted a Polestar 4. So, I sat down with a spreadsheet and did some comparing.
I took all my data from the manufacturer website, including the as-equipped MSRP. Deals are too fleeting and difficult to pin down sometimes.
I looked at a bunch of EVs that I was interested in and some that I wasn't as interested in. I selected 5 features that were my must-haves (AWD, vented seats, heads-up display, cool color, phone charge/connectivity) . Each vehicle was optioned up as needed to get that equipment. For each feature it did not have, I deducted a point.
Appearance was also a 1-5 rating and the only really subjective one.
Range and power were both divided by 100 to get a number nearish 1-5 for each vehicle. Though those numbers ended up be very, very close together in general. One third of the vehicles have exactly 402 horsepower. The longest range was 352 miles (Rivian) and the shortest was 247 (Polestar 2, dual motor). But three other cars were within 11 miles of the Polestar 2 range.
I added up the points from those 4 areas and divided into the as-equipped MSRP giving me a cost per feature point (lower is better). Despite no vehicle having fewer than 3 feature points and no vehicle have less than 3 appearance points, the range of the point total was from 12.59 (Volvo) to 17.14 (Polestar 4).
Vehicles tested: Audi Q4, e-tron BMW i4 Mercedes EQE 500 Polestar 2 and 4 Porsche Taycan Rivian R1T Volvo C40
The worst in this comparison where the Audi e-Tron ($6980 per point), Porsche Taycan ($6920 per point), Mercedes ($6360 per point), the Audi Q 4 ($5182 per point) and the Volvo C40 ($5010 per point). The Volvo is the second cheapest, but it had the fewest "required" features.
The car with the most feature points is the Polestar 4. It also had the most power, narrowly beating the Rivian and the e-tron. Yes, the Rivian can be had with WAY more power, but the base model had sufficient features and the lowest price. The Polestar 4, however, came in third overall, beating the Rivian by a scarce $6/point. They are the effectively the same price and the same power. The Rivian has the better range, but lacks a heads-up display.
Second place was the BMW i4. This was the AWD e40 version. It was only one of two vehicles below $4000 per point. I've heard, but didn't deduct a point, that the vented seats are terrible. It was also $10,000 more than the winner, which was the big difference.
The winner, with all but one feature (the heads-up display), is also the cheapest car on the list. The Polestar 2. Coming in at $3948 per point.
