Tenured faculty and quiet quitting

2024.05.15 17:18 woohooali Tenured faculty and quiet quitting

I’d love to hear about tenured faculty who quiet quit (if that’s even the right term in this scenario).
I am beyond exhausted after decades of giving my all to continuously only be milked for money (via research grants). I want to stop submitting grants, let the money dry up, and let them pay half my salary (what they have to pay per my tenure) while doing next to nothing. My sanity is literally only holding on by a strand. Worst case scenario there is some way they fire me but I assume that’d be a ways off and by that time maybe I’d be in a better headspace to figure out what else I can do with my life.

2024.05.15 10:56 Numerous-Theme3068 Benediction College and Harrison Butker

An open letter to Benedictine College and Harrison Butker
I first came across the Harrison Butker’s 2025 commencement speech at Benedictine College on Twitter. It was a short snippet of the speech and I was in disbelief of what I heard. Intrigued, I went to YouTube to find a recording of the whole speech before drawing further conclusions. Now, I am nearly beyond words.
I grew up in the Catholic Church, attended a Catholic high school, and do still consider myself to be Catholic, although not without my own qualms with the church. However, this is not about that. I am also a more recent college graduate. I graduated from a large public university 5 years ago and am looking forward to obtaining my graduate degree next year, both degrees I have worked incredibly hard for and am immensely proud of. I don’t remember my own commencement speech, but if it was anything like this, I am glad I don’t- I loved my undergraduate experience and will be proud to have my diploma framed and hanging one day. Harrison Butker’s speech is condescending, out of touch, and against the very values of your school. You both, Benedictine College and Harrison Butker, owe these graduating students an apology.
As a proudly Catholic college, I do not hold issue you or your choice in speaker with promoting Catholicism and the beliefs of the Catholic Church, even in regard to politics; while I may not agree, that is your choice to do so and one that underlies the foundation of your school.
The class of 2025, as with many recent graduates and current students, have had to work through a unique set of hardships as a whole, beyond the personal hardships we all face. Mr. Butker is not a recent graduate, nor is he working directly with a school or university. College is a change for everyone from high school, with the course load, schedule, and independence, but beyond the nervousness and uncertainty that comes with this new phase, students are able to rely on the fact that since its inception, the college experience has been relatively stable, until the COVID-19 pandemic. Students, and faculty, were forced to rapidly adapt to a situation that we knew very little about and had no history to guide us. To minimize that, say that “it is not unique,” especially as someone who was not experiencing it from an educational aspect, is disrespectful to students and faculty, regardless of beliefs on the issue. Pandemics are not new, nor are controversial policies, but what these students faced, was new. I know of no other time during our history, where thousands of students were nearly overnight told to immediately leave their housing and worry about their finances and shelter as not everyone has the means to find new housing or go back to their parents, have food outside of the dinings halls, or access to a computer and internet to complete their coursework where they had planned on attending in person or using university resources, when these things are apart of what students pay thousands of dollars for or take loans to afford as part of their college expenses. Whether or not you support these policies and changes, that does not lessen the unique hardships faced or make a student wrong for adhering to them when failure to do so could result in greater consequences. If there is another time where this has happened, I am happy to be referred so that I can learn. It is one thing to say that the feelings of uncertainty and anxiety around new policies and adapting to them are not unique, but another to say that the challenges these students faced as a result of policy is not unique, it is disrespectful, condescending, and completely out of place as someone who did not experience it.
Beyond this, it is even more disrespectful to diminish the accomplishments of particularly the female graduates of your university by allowing your speaker to advocate forgoing using their degree and instead, choose being a wife and mother. To Benedictine College, if this is what your school advocates, then why charge tuition to your female students? How will they pay for it or pay off their loans for it? Do you expect your female graduates to marry a man who will pay off their debts? What happens if they don’t or if they choose a vocation in religious life, are their debts forgiven? To take it a step further, why admit female students at all if their degree is not meant to be used? A yearly tuition of $35,000 seems a greedy ask to attain what becomes a useless degree. Maybe this is not something you support, but I have yet to see any statement indicating dissent with this position. The Benedictine sisterhood and St. Scholastica, its founder, take pride in education and she herself do not choose the vocation of marriage. How would St. Scholastica be able to attend your college when she found her vocation to be in the religious life? To Harrison Butker, how dare you? I am happy for you and your family that your wife can be a homemaker if that’s what she wants to do, but that is completely out of touch for what nearly all of these students will face as they graduate. Your family can comfortably live on just your salary of over $4 million per year, but you are a minority in this situation. You speak of not allowing cost of living to prohibiting where you live, but with your salary, I’m sure there are few areas you cannot find suitable housing and access to food. Is one supposed to choose to live in circumstances where they do not have a stable shelter in favor of a more traditional priest? Earlier in your speech you mention “accepting your lane and staying in it,” I believe you should have taken your own advice, because your lane is far wealthier than mine and likely all of the graduates you are speaking to. Most families will need two salaries to live in even a fraction of the comfort you live and even then, may not be comfortable. From what I understand, you went to GT on a scholarship, another minority, factor in student loans, and the comfort fraction becomes even smaller. Should a family live in a constant state of worry about money so that a woman can be a homemaker? You spoke of charity and the platform God has given you, but I do not see you using your wealth for charitable acts to support the lifestyle you advocate in these graduates. You decide to speak for women and presume they are most excited at the prospect of marriage and children when you are speaking to congratulate them on a major accomplishment that has little to do with their future as a wife or mother. Can a woman not find fulfillment and a calling as a valuable member of the workforce and a wife and mother. As a woman who anticipates graduating from medical school in one year, is being a doctor not part of God’s plan for me? As I understand it, my vocation, is not between being a wife and mother or being a doctor, but of the calling to serve as a married, single, or religious person. You make it seem as though I cannot be both a doctor and family woman one day. You make remarks about controlling how and when children are conceived. You condemn IVF and surrogacy when a large portion of woman and men in this country struggle with infertility or health conditions making a pregnancy incredibly dangerous. If a woman cannot naturally have a child then is she not to be a mother? Do you also condemn adoption as it a choice and controlled method of becoming a parent? Is it only if a woman is unable to conceive naturally that it is acceptable to work rather than be a homemaker? I have always been taught in my experience with the Catholic Church to welcome children into your life whenever they come about, not as a barrier to being a working mom. You have laid out the options as black or white, mother or worker, when I believe the advice is to be open to and welcome God’s plan for you in both areas of your life. Not only do you advocate for the females graduates to forgo the workforce when this is an unrealistic path for most, but in doing so, you add extra pressure to the male graduates to provide in an unrealistic way. At what cost do men take higher paying jobs they are unhappy in so that their wives can be homemakers? You have worked hard to get to where you are, say you are doing something you love, and are able to show the fruits of that labor, should these graduates not show all of the knowledge and skills they have gained through earning their degree?
To Harrison Butker, I, too, am Catholic. I believe we also are similar in that we question right from wrong and do not just blindly accept the things that are fed to us. You say that our priests and bishops are anointed by God, but quickly question that anointing. I now question you, in who you are to question who has been anointed by God. You point out it is your duty as a father to lead your son. In our faith, we call our priests Father, but you call us to question and right them, should they not lead us? Should we not follow the quote you use of trusting our priests to translate the teachings of the Bible for us? Does your son question you and what is your response? You call for priests and bishops to be righted but also to stay in our lane. I do not mean to support the actions of our church leaders either way, but as an individual am not following what you ask of these graduates.
To Harrison Butker, you say you speak from experience, but it seems your experiences are vastly different than most of the graduates you speak to. Your statements contradict one another, in questioning our church leaders, staying in our lane, and even speaking of your wife as someone who converted to Catholicism but later question being with someone of a different faith, not allowing for change. As I have stated before, it is one thing to speak of shared feelings, but another to speak of a shared experience. You give advice in black or white rather than ideas for consideration and reflection. Listening to your commencement speech, I can’t imagine I would have found excitement for the future and wisdom as I start to move forward on my own. Had this been my speech to give, I couldn’t speak to a lot of the challenges these students faced, but can empathize with the fears of stepping out of the student life and uncertainty about my future. I could speak to how being able to adapt to challenges, facing hardship in my own way has made me strong and able to persevere and that they too have grown to be stronger and able to persevere too, even if they are not confident. I could speak to how money is not always the most important thing in life, your church, your family, your community are all things to reflect on when making decisions about the future. But, this was not my speech, it was yours. My ideas may not be right, maybe it has more “fluff” than yours, but they do not tell me the right or wrong way to live my life, as that is between me and God.
To Benedictine College, much of this is address to Harrison Butker. However, this is the person you chose and supported in giving a commencement speech. What is address to him, is also a reflection of what you support and believe, and the message you hope to send your graduates off with. I am not one of your graduates, happy to say I am not with this speech, but at least for me, this is the representation I have of your school.
To Benedictine College and Harrison Butker, you both owe the graduates an apology for these disrespectful and confusing sentiments as they enter a new and stressful chapter of their lives.
To the Benedictine College class of 2025, congratulations!

2024.05.14 20:56 ConnectHelicopter53 Will my little brother be able to actually get a decent job if he gets his bachelors at a state university and is “decent” GPA like 3.2?

I see so many of you say you’re giving up on finding a job and pursuing DoorDash/other industries (no judgement I still DoorDash if I’m really bored) is it really that difficult if you generally apply yourself and put in time?
my little brother is considering a computer science degree at the moment. What is the hiring environment usually like for grads? I know that it is difficult, but I guess what I’m trying to ask is, if my little brother is the “average” CS student (let’s say 3.2 or 3.1 GPA) upon graduation with a bachelors, will he be able to find a good role that isn’t underpaid and shit? In my area the median household income is about 65-70k. In the same environment, hypothetically, does the average BS grad tend to actually get a role paying like 85k starting in a MCOL?
Idc if he doesn’t go to a FAANG, but I need to know that at worst case scenario if he’s just an average CS grad he will still be able to obtain a comfortable, livable income. I’d rather not see him get stuck at a help desk role. I just see far too many posts from CS grads that say they can’t find jobs, and currently I’m way too ignorant about the CS industry to understand what he needs to do to ensure he will be in good shape for a promising and comfortable career.
We are pretty broke. Financial aid isn’t giving shit bc my mom lives in a VHCOL so on paper it seems like she earns a lot. It’s still a sub-six figure salary in a VHCOL, so it really doesn’t go far. I just don’t want my brother to have to go through all this effort if he’s not going to be able to get into the industry.
My other concern is he is potentially going to get a full ride to Long Island university due to his academics, but I’ve been hearing scary things about them shutting down departments, having administration teach classes after they fire faculty etc. I’m just really concerned that this school, while it may get him an almost free CS degree, might not have the network or resources that the state schools have. I have no clue wtf leetcode is or what projects he should do, but now I’m having fears that the department may not actually care to develop him considering LIU is a private school, they may not spend the effort to tell him what GitHub projects or when should he be searching for an internship etc.
He got accepted to every school he applied for, but due to severe cost constraints, it’s going to need to be either LIU or a local community college where he gets an associates and transfers into a state 4 year. Not sure what is better, a private school environment that may not develop him enough, or a community college environment where he will have to try much harder to overcome community college stigma to get a good role.

2024.05.14 02:36 Material_Hamster7321 Scholarship Woes

I was funded by a state university for my grad school. During the said time frame, my status changed from part-time to tempo status faculty and I was privileged to experience bonuses, etc. Pandemic struck, and I was not able to finish my degree. The university urged me to pay back all the stipends, salary and the bonuses I received during the time I was a scholar. Tama po ba yon? I'm willing to pay back all the stipends, but the salary and bonuses for all those years were difficult for me to return since it will reach the amount of a million. Since I was not a masters graduate, I was changed to part time. I have co-employees as well who turned from tempo to part time, pero hindi naman sila siningil. I worked hard and did all the school tasks, and I can't fathom why would I return my salary. Para akong naging slave if I will return all the monetary compensations.
Is there a similar case with mine? Will the university sue me? Appreciate your help.

2024.05.13 23:52 0183628191937 Have you ever realized you were the wrong candidate for the job, but it wasn’t your fault?

I was hired to a prestigious university (staff, not faculty). I thought my work experience was relevant, and it basically is, but I do not have a career background in the higher ed sector. I came from government, which works very differently. This has made it really difficult to understand the ins-and-outs of university operations.
I was honest in my interviews. I think the hiring managers thought I’d bring in a lot of useful insight from my government experience. Eight months into the job, I feel like that experience has meant very little. I’m really struggling to manage my workload in the areas that relate the most to university financial management. Everything feels very unstructured, there isn’t a lot of formal training, and my managers only assign work, but don’t review it. We stopped going over my onboarding and training plan after the second week. I had to keep reminding my manager to schedule trainings.
I am feeling some resentment about how this has gone. I told my manager and senior director how overwhelmed I’ve felt. They basically said they’d help me help myself through better time management. I acknowledge that I could do better in this area, but I still felt a little gaslit since they didn’t take any responsibility themselves for how challenging this job is for a new hire.
One thing that really stings is that I make $20k less than I did at my old job. I took this one because I was out of work for over a year due to medical reasons. I was desperate for work. I feel like they took advantage of me by not offering me a higher salary, which is now not working out for either of us since I’m underperforming while feeling resentment about how my first year is going.
I feel like if I ever get fired or quit, they’ll hire someone with lots of university experience who will excel at the job, which makes me feel like they made the wrong hiring decision, and I’m bearing the cost of it.
Anyone experienced a similar situation?

2024.05.13 22:39 Western_Bullfrog9747 Faculty pay

My friend has been offered a faculty position at UNC and is trying to negotiate salary. I can’t offer any insight since I’m in an SHRA position here where we have career bands to determine pay. Anyone know how much you’re able to negotiate salaries for faculty appointments? Any insight is appreciated!

2024.05.13 20:38 mehardwidge College changing contract interpretation retroactively

I teach at a college in Illinois. Faculty are unionized with a faculty contract.
Our faculty contract states: "Bargaining Unit Members will receive an additional $2,000 added to their base salary upon completion of a higher education degree."
I have completed an additional degree, and now the college is claiming it has to be a higher level degree.
However, the written contract does not say this. It specifically says "higher education degree" not "higher level degree". "Higher education" in the United States refers to tertiary education. So my interpretation is that you have to get a degree from a legitimate college, not just a random thing you call a degree, which is reasonable. If "higher education" doesn't refer to "higher education" in the standard meaning, it is hard to tell what it means. They clearly didn't mean "higher (degree in education)" as that would not apply to most people.
It seems to me that allowing one party to interpret the contract differently than it is written largely cancels the purpose of a written and signed employment contract. I don't think they can argue this was a simple scrivener's error, because the college and the union had plenty of opportunity to carefully read and modify the contract before signing it. Maybe they intended to write a higher "level", but...they didn't write that.
So, legal advice of reddit, any advice? How strong is my legal footing?

2024.05.13 05:03 Biotech-sleuth BME BS looking to pivot after undergrad

I’m a BME undergraduate sophomore on the med device track attending a good engineering university 40 minutes out from Boston. I have been told repeatedly that a BME degree may not have been the best choice for my career by engineering faculty and despite being near Boston, the Biotech companies that attend career fairs are far and few and tend to be looking for mechies. I do not want to repeat the same mistake I made when choosing my major for undergrad and dig myself further into an industry not well suited for my career goals or the salary I am working to attain.
For context, I chose BME because of how interdisciplinary it is and because I ultimately want to go corporate and enter higher management. I was under the impression that being a jack of all trades was an advantageous move when entering STEM and the tech industry. But it’s becoming increasingly apparent to me that I was mistaken and BME is more of a specialization. I now know, because of this thread, that there are not many biomedical engineering positions out there and I am competing not only with other BMEs but other bio-related majors as well as engineers from other disciplines looking to specialize in biomedical technology for entry-level positions.
I see friends that are recent BME grads walk across the stage without any clue on when they’ll land their first job, despite being in the Boston area. Because of this I am trying to get as much industry experience as I can. This summer will make 2 years of conducting NIH/NSF funded biomechanics research with a renowned biomedical engineer at an NIH facility in DC, this coming semester I plan on doing NSF funded cell and tissue research, and my senior year I will be doing med device research with my academic advisomentor who is the head of my university’s BME department and former head of Harvard’s BME department. I have networked and managed to secure an internship with one of the top medtech companies in Boston for next summer. On top of this, I am a published second author in an IEEE publication, have won awards for my research, have won first place in two university wide engineering prototyping competitions and patented one of the devices, and am/was a student leader in my university’s NSBE and BMES chapters.
I do my homework so I have been spectating this thread for a while now hoping to glean helpful advice on the step after graduation. Unfortunately, each post confirms my fear that BME in prematurely may not yield the job opportunities I had hoped for. I have my extracurriculars for my remaining years of undergrad planned but I am aiming to have an established job and career plan before graduation. I have received a fellowship offer from a mentor directing a biomechanics masters program, where I would get a LOT of federal/public BME experience and earn a mechanical engineering masters degree and possible PhD. I like the idea of exploring academia because I can use it to pivot out of BME and the two different engineering degrees would broaden my med device knowledge and specialization. However, the university isn’t well known despite how great the program is and it would take me out of the Boston area.
Alternately, a different mentor works on the legal team at the HQ of the biggest biotech company and is insisting that I stay in Mass, work, and get a masters in BME or an MBA or do a dual degree and master in both. I am now less keen on this path despite receiving advice from someone successful in biotech higher management and am feeling less passionate about that career path since I am beginning to have an idea of what industry is like.
I feel like I’m at a crossroad and I know that I have time but I also know that law school is an option, med school is an option, a masters in BME or Business Administration or PhD in Biomechanics are options as well as jumping right in and taking a quality engineering role and seeing where I go from there. I’ve also been thinking of just scraping my current plan and pivoting into something IT/cybersecurity or software dev related by using my engineering background and CompTIA certifications to validate pursuing a career in a different part of the tech industry.
Ultimately, I want to position myself for a successful career. My dream is to become a biotech executive and I know alumni that have done just that and are currently building the BME industry in Boston. I just want to figure out the path of least resistance to a similar position where I am well-compensated and am not dealing with so much competition for few jobs. What would the career path look like if I pursued my dream? Any advice?

2024.05.11 18:14 nailahossain BUET Biomedical Engineering or DU Applied Statistics and Data Science

I don't have passion for any particular field. I don't necessarily enjoy any subjects of science. My goal is to go abroad. My other objective is money. The more I can earn the better. And if I can't go abroad then I'll like to pursue a career in private sector. BCS is a no for me. Keep in my mind my family is middle class. Only way for me to complete MSc abroad is to secure a scholarship. Else I'll have to put my parents in a position where they'll be forced to sell considerable
I'm currently admitted into BUET BME but I'm leaning towards giving it up in favor of DU Applied Statistics and Data Science. But I can't really come to a decision. It's so difficult. I feel like regardless of what I choose I'll regret not opting for the other option.
BME
What works for BME is since the subject is heavily research oriented. It's easier to secure scholarship. Professors are more willing to fund compared to other subjects. And not to mention BUET alumni network is strong. Also I've talked to department seniors who have ensured faculties are extremely helpful.
On the contrary I've been lurking on BME subreddit for awhile now. You see people tell you all the time that BME has huge demand aboard. But the sub reddit portrays a rather dim picture. It seems many people there regret their major, there isn't enough jobs that live up to their expectations, and good paying jobs are scarce to get with only a BSc engg degree. It seems like MSc even PhD is necessary to land a good job there. Also many of them opt to switch career. All that is extremely discouraging.
Applied Statistics and Data Science
Yes, data science has been hot lately. Yes, the salary is alluring. Also the prospect of remote work is tempting. Now here is the problem, Though the subject is called applied statistics and data science it's fundamentally applied statistics that features little of basic data science. I'll attach the course syllabus.
Yes I'm aware it's common to pursue a career in data science from stats background but recently more and more CSE graduates are aiming data science. See CSE graduates are naturally better at coding and also machine learning. As AI will only get more prominent day by day I think it's safe to assume that to build a stable career in data science proficiency in machine learning is going to be crucial.
I've looked up circulars asking for data analyst or data scientist in Bangladesh but the problem is they want someone who is a cse/IT graduate. If I can't get a job as data scientist or data analyst after graduating then what are my other options in Bangladesh? After graduation in applied statistics from DU and completing MSc in data science or data analysis from abroad what kind of jobs can I expect if I have to return to Bangladesh?
Also I suppose it's going to be considerably harder to secure scholarship in data science compared to BME. But to secure scholarship I'll also need to maintain my cgpa. And also there is IELTS to overcome. If I go to BME then maintaining cgpa is going to more difficult. And I don't think I'll be able to focus on IELTS at all while I'll be completing BSc in BUET whereas I'll find it easier to maintain cgpa in ISRT and I believe I'll find some time to sharpen my other skills if I go there. But I've heard that DU faculties aren't all that helpful and getting on their bad side can do irreparable damage to academic results.
I don't really have much time to think. I had my interview today. I failed to submit my HSC and SSC transcripts as those are submitted in BUET. See I'm currently assigned statistics in DU. Second run subject allotment result is to be published on the 13th. And if nothing crazy happens I'll be assigned applied statistics and data science. DU authority has given me till 2 pm, 14.05.24 to submit the documents.
I'm just so confused. Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you.

2024.05.11 17:00 amphibilad Choosing between two TT offers

Hey folks, I’m currently a postdoc working in a STEM field, and in the exciting position of having to choose between two TT offers from great (top 75) R1 universities in the US. I think I’d be pretty happy at either, but it’s a really complicated decision and I’d love to hear people’s thoughts. Option A is a large public university and option B is a smaller private university. Here’s my breakdown:
Research fit: Both places have lots of research resources, but option A has much better facilities for some of the work I’d like to do, and more opportunities for collaboration. I was also able to negotiate a nice joint appointment at option A which would allow me to recruit from a broader pool of students.
Department fit: Have had very positive interactions with both departments. Option A had a bunch of mid-career people leave recently, I don’t want to speculate on that too much but still noteworthy. Option B has had a bunch of new faculty hires recently so there’s a really exciting young faculty cohort, and plans for more growth in the future. The lab space at option B is a bit dreary (no windows and needs extensive renovation), but it’s better situated for interactions with colleagues than option A. Both places have great support for pre-tenure faculty and very high tenure rates.
Salary / benefits: Very similar salary and benefits offered from both places. Option B is offering quite a bit more startup funding, with fewer restrictions on how it’s spent. I’m not sure how much to weigh this since I’d be expected to get grant funding pretty quickly at either place.
Teaching: Both places have very reasonable teaching loads. Option B is probably a better fit in terms of what courses I’d be teaching, but we haven’t fully nailed that down yet. Option B is much more selective at the undergrad level and will have smaller classes with better quality students.
Personal fit: Option B is in a much nicer city that’s also better geographically situated (closer to partner, family, and friends), but A isn’t that much farther away. Both places are pretty affordable to live in, though B is slightly more expensive.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts, and please let me know if there’s any other factors you think I should be considering!

2024.05.10 20:06 discretefalls new grad PA job interview prep

hi all! I've been seeing an influx of posts about prepping for job interviews so I thought I'd share my experience. I'm no expert by any means but I believe I was successful in getting interviews/offers by doing a couple of these things.
a little bit about me: i'm graduating from a PA program in NC this month. I knew I wanted to apply to jobs out of state, particularly in bigger cities and have a job offer secured before graduation. I also knew I wanted to start out in something general (ex: family med, hospital med) because I liked most of my rotations. I also applied to GI, neuro, and psychiatry jobs since I did additional electives in those specialities
I started applying to jobs at the end of January this year (about 4 months from graduation). I didn't really hear back until the end of February/beginning of March for a majority of positions I applied to. I applied to a total of 39 jobs mostly on the east coast and couple in the midwest/west. I applied broadly location wise as well.
here's what I did that helped:
-I had my CV and a sample cover letter looked at by faculty in my program and practicing PAs. I wrote a cover letter for every job I applied to which I believe increased my chances of hearing back/getting an interview
-if there was an HR recruiter email on a job posting I was interested in, I would email them and ask if they would consider my application since I was still in school. some places stated they would only consider my app until after I graduated and passed the PANCE. this saved me time in not applying to jobs that I technically wouldn't be qualified for
-asked faculty/alumni if they knew of any places/hospitals that were hiring new grads (this is how I got my chosen job offer)
-I typed out my answers to commonly asked interview questions (tell me about yourself/your rotations, strengths/weaknesses, etc). i also did get asked clinical scenario questions so I briefly reviewed preventative healthcare screening guidelines and commonly ordered diagnostics. this helped me feel more prepared for my interviews. in general I had around 2-3 interviews for a potential job (usually started with HR, then a individual or group interview with an APP/MD)
-researched median salary ahead of time by looking at the AAPA salary report. I was asked about my salary expectation at variable times in the interview process (sometimes in the beginning, sometimes in the end)
-I always had questions to ask them- you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. most of my questions were about training/orientation, new grad expectations, roles, and responsibilities, supervision requirements, challenges to expect on the job, what qualities they were looking for in a potential hire, etc
-once I had an offer, I had a faculty member review my proposed offer lettecontract for further insight
I remember being very nervous last year around this time about securing a job offer given how the job market currently is and reading prior posts on reddit about the PA job market (most of these were written during the height of COVID though). the job search was tedious but I would say that the issue wasn't hearing back from jobs or receiving interviews but rather it was determining whether the job would be a truly good fit for me as a new grad. the interviews themselves were easy compared to my interviews to get into PA school.
best of luck on the job search to those applying or applying in the near future! may we all end up in jobs we are excited about and will thrive in :)

2024.05.10 19:55 nightmarewoman I'm 28, make $67,000, live in Central Mass, and I struggled this week

ABOUT ME
I wrote a money diary in October 2022. Since then, my boyfriend P. has been upgraded to fiance (we are getting married in July!) and my beloved Trash Cat has had enucleation surgery (we now call the vet “The Eye Snatcher”). I still work as a technology specialist in higher education. In December 2023, I discovered HR input my salary wrong when I first started my current job—the contract I signed stated my salary as $65,000, but they input it as $60,000. I got a hefty portion of back pay. I am currently making about $67,000/year.
P. and I still split expenses 50/50 (somewhat imperfectly) and do not have any combined accounts. We input shared expenses into this spreadsheet and then settle the difference once a month. His salary is about $75,000. He recently cashed out about $15,000 from a 529 plan he never used (he didn’t go to college) and will be creating a CD ladder with this money to save for a down payment.
ASSETS & DEBT
Retirement balance: $6,542.66 in my 403(b) and $2,688.03 in my Roth IRA. In my last money diary, I felt guilty about my retirement balance because I didn’t really start until the age of 25 and for a year my contributions went uninvested. I feel much better about it now. This summer, I’ll qualify for employer-matched contributions to my 403(b), which will improve my progress even more.
Equity: maybe one day????
Savings account balance: $1,291.23 in an emergency fund, $160.32 in a recently-started down payment fund.
Checking account balance: $3,052.37
Credit card debt: $4,651 on credit card 1, $0 on credit card 2. Unfortunately, I’ve had 3 major setbacks in recent months: Trash Cat’s surgery ($2,200), new tires/maintenance on my car ($2,300), and an unexpected hotel stay when P.’s nephew passed away just before Christmas ($1,000). P. and I split Trash Cat’s surgery and the hotel stay, so the total I’ve put on my card in recent months is $3,900. I was down to about $800 in debt prior to all this fun stuff.
Student loan debt: $75,000 in public loans for a bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in English. This was technically a “bad choice” because I did use my loans for living expenses during grad school, but I honestly do not regret it. I LOVED grad school, even though most of it happened online due to the pandemic, and I sincerely believe it made me a better, more thoughtful, and empathetic person. Since the university I work for now is a certified non-profit organization, I will eventually qualify for PSLF if I stay here or within the field of accredited higher education.
Car debt: I owe $2,754 on my Toyota.
INCOME
Income progression: I have worked steadily at part-time jobs since age 16. I’ve been in educational tech for 3 years; my starting salary was $18/hour as a customer service associate, which was around $42,000 annually with overtime. When I started my current job almost 2 years ago, my salary jumped to $65,000 (which ended up being funky, see ABOUT ME above). My current salary, after it was adjusted and I received a 3% raise, is now $67,000.
Monthly take-home pay: $3,355.90 after deductions
Side gig income: None. I quit tutoring because I started taking night classes back in the fall.
Parental Support: As I mentioned in my money diary last year, my parents contributed about $22,000 to rent/car expenses during my “adult” (college) life. My dad is also paying for our wedding “reception,” which is a private dinner at a restaurant for 15 people (estimated cost $5,000). I hinted heavily at Financial Trauma in my last diary, an issue I’ve mostly overcome thanks to my incredible therapist. I might write a more detailed post on healing Financial Trauma and my experience with it…let me know if you’d be interested in reading something like that :)
EXPENSES
Rent: $787.50 (P. and I split rent 50/50; our total rent is $1,575)
Renter’s & car insurance: $1,321/year, which averages out to $110.83/month (not split).
Health insurance: $394.46/month before tax for health and dental. Once P. and I get married, I am hopping on his insurance.
Retirement contribution: $257.50/month pre-tax into my 403(b). I also transfer $50/month into a Roth IRA.
Savings contribution: $200/month to emergency fund, $50/month to down payment fund
Debt payments: $260/month for my car payment, $60/month for my student loan payment (this is wildly low because I am on an income-driven repayment plan. Due to the ongoing Federal Battles, I have not had to recertify my income, so this payment is based on my 2019 income. I also pay at least $500/month towards my credit card debt. Since this is a three paycheck month (and my third paycheck will be a “deduction holiday”), I am paying $1,000 towards it this month. P. does not contribute towards my debt.
Utilities: P. and I split internet, water, electricity, and trash evenly: usually about $175/month for my half, $350 total.
Cellphone: $65/month (we each pay for our own phones).
Subscriptions: Spotify for $10.99/month, Hulu for $7.99/month, Monarch (web budgeting app) for $50/year (this is a discounted price; it will jump to $80/year next year). None of these expenses are split.
Gym membership: $36/monthly for gym membership; $500/quarter for personal training (not split).
Pet expenses: P. and I split this expense; generally $100/month for my half, $200/month total.
Therapy: $25/week (not split).
MONEY DIARY
DAY 1: FRIDAY
😴 7 AM: P. shakes me awake. I reluctantly get up, go to the bathroom, and change into leggings and a sweater dress. After I give Trash Cat his morning medicine, I kiss P. goodbye and I’m out the door. I listen to the Sinisterhood podcast on my drive to work and try to stop for coffee, but the drive-thru line is backed up into the street and causing traffic, so I skip it.
💄8 AM: I put on my makeup in the bathroom at work; this has become my new routine since I was diagnosed with sleep apnea because the extra few minutes of sleep are now a medical necessity. I use Covergirl skinmilk foundation, elf lash and roll mascara, and elf instant brow pencil. Sometimes I use elf lip stain (big elf fan over here) but don’t bother today.
😈 9 AM: I meet with the university’s academic technology team to help them set up a feedback survey for a new grading tool they piloted this semester. We also bitch a little about some difficulties we’ve had this week with faculty. An important thing to know about me is that I am a hater to my innermost core.
🥪12 PM: After spending most of the morning replying to emails, updating tickets, and watching budgeting videos on YouTube, I realize I forgot my lunch at home. Since digging myself back into credit card debt, I’ve made a conscious effort to bring my lunch to work and spend less on convenience food, so I’m pretty annoyed with myself. A quick trip to the library cafe yields a turkey sub, a green smoothie, and a giant cookie ($14.47). I eat at my desk while making some money moves (it’s payday!). $200 goes to my credit card to cover my therapy copay and the pair of Hokas I bought my mom for her birthday earlier this week. I also transfer $500 to my savings account. $214.47
👣5 PM: I pack up and make the short drive over to my friend’s apartment. It was a spectacularly unproductive day; if I’m being honest, I’ve been feeling burnt out and need a break, but I’m trying to save my vacation days for our wedding. My friend and I walk around one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city and catch up. We also go to Whole Foods before she heads to the gym. I grab some specialty canned beans, tofu, tortilla chips, Chomps, and some Poppi sodas ($35.23).
🐱8 PM: I eat one of my favorite lazy meals for dinner—refried beans mixed with quinoa, salsa verde, and shredded cheese with tortilla chips—and watch a few episodes of Home Economics on Hulu. I get sucked into TikTok for a little while before brushing my teeth and taking my meds. I go to bed around 10:30 PM while snuggling Trash Cat.
Daily Total: $249.70
DAY 2: SATURDAY
🚿 8:30 AM: Quick shower before changing into a blue sundress and a white button up. I do my makeup and feed Trash Cat. I’m out the door a little past 9 AM to head to book club.
📚10 AM: This month, we’re having book club at an adorable little tea room. We read Romancing Mr. Bridgerton and obviously love a ✨theme✨ so the four of us spend an hour talking about the book, eating tiny finger sandwiches, and drinking approximately 5 gallons of tea. One of my good friends from grad school, R., started this book club a few months ago and it has been such a joy to get together with awesome women on a regular basis. We also commiserate over family problems—R does a dramatic reading of an outrageous text from my dad before we go our separate ways ($38.10).
💍12 PM: I received an email yesterday from our jeweler that my wedding ring is done and realize I’m much closer to the jewelry shop than I am to home. I call P. to ask if he’d be okay with me picking it up. He is. I swing by the shop and try on my ring; it is so beautiful and fits perfectly! I wear it on my drive home and can’t stop admiring it. P. put down $400 when we met with the jeweler a few months ago, so I pay $821.88 to take it home. P. sends me that exact amount on Venmo. (technically, I pay nothing).
😵2 PM: I eat more of my refried bean lazy meal and watch some episodes of The Rookie on Hulu. The rest of the day is spent fielding calls and texts from my sister, brother, and sister-in-law about my mother’s birthday dinner tomorrow. It is bringing up ✨trauma✨ for all of us.
😴9 PM: A very lazy night routine of brushing my teeth, taking off my makeup with a wipe, take my meds, and drinking water while listening to a podcast as I fall asleep.
Daily Total: $38.10
DAY 3: SUNDAY
🎁10:30 AM: Roll out of bed, make some Kodiak protein waffles, and call my youngest brother, who is 22. He and I are very close, but I still carry a lot of guilt about how much I couldn’t—and can’t—protect him from. I offer to pick out a gift for Mom “from him” since he has to head to the airport to retrieve our parents and he agrees.
🧀12 PM: I go to a gift shop in the next town over and pick out a pair of gold vermeil earrings. They’re $225. I buy them and tell my brother to Venmo me $175 (so technically I spend $50). After, I pop over to Wegmans, which is in the same shopping plaza, and pick up quesadillas, seltzers, fried rice, and spicy chicken for lunch ($41.55 total, $20.77 for my half). $70.77.
🧼1 PM: P. and I eat lunch on the couch while watching YouTube. Afterwards, I channel my irritation into cleaning the apartment. I vacuum, swiffer, put away dishes, and wipe down the bathroom. P. takes out the trash and recycling and starts some laundry.
🍾4 PM: We meet my other brother (I have two—this one is also younger but closer in age to me, 27) and my sister-in-law at a bar to pregame for Mom's birthday dinner. Is this healthy? Probably not. Does it work? Yes. I pay for all our drinks ($112.02)
🙄5 PM: Dinner time. A bunch of my aunts and uncles are there, too, so we sit at the “kid’s table” with my siblings and one of my cousins. I order Jameson and ginger and a fancy cheeseburger. Maybe it’s the liquid courage, or the fact I went into this with extraordinarily low expectations, but I have a surprisingly good time…until my dad starts to fight with the waitress about separate checks for the separate tables. He didn’t mention it at the beginning of the meal, and considering we have 17 people at three different tables, the waitress understandably says no. It gets to the point where my brother just hands her his credit card to put an end to it. He doesn’t tell me how much the total bill is; P. and I venmo him $100 each ($100).
🍋7 PM: The fun isn’t over! We head back to my parents’ house for cake and presents. I eat lemon cake with ice cream and give my mom the Hokas I bought her earlier in the week. She loves the earrings from my brother, and he thanks me for helping him.
💤11 PM: We finally leave. I fall asleep on the way home. I thank P. for being such a supportive partner, take my meds, and promptly fall asleep again.
Daily total: $282.79
DAY 4: MONDAY
🤕8 AM: I make it out of bed and over to the computer. I respond to emails, update a few tickets, and purchase a knee brace from Amazon ($24.01). I LOVE going to the gym and I’m trying to lose weight for health reasons, but the past few days my left knee has been stiff and achy to the point that it hurts to go up and down the stairs. I have a doctor’s appointment this week so I can tell my primary care physician then, but I want to go for a walk to clear my head. I drink a Liquid IV.
🍜11 AM: P. picks up brunch from one of our favorite local restaurants. Their biscuits and gravy bowl is incredible. ($27.58 total, $*13.79 *for my half).
🥟4 PM: I jump in the car and run to Petsmart to pick up pill pockets and food for Trash Cat. Even though he came from a dumpster, he has decided he’ll only eat the fancy cat food. ($64.78 total, $32.39 **for my half). Then I go to Wegmans for some more groceries: tomatoes, cucumbers, frozen dumplings, lettuce, seltzer, onions, brussel sprouts, and turkey burgers. ($68.22 total, $34.11 **for my half).
🍅6 PM: P. and I eat dinner while watching the John Oliver episode on libraries (stop banning books, losers!!!!). It’s one of our other favorite lazy meals: quinoa with fancy canned beans with chopped up peppers, onions, and tomatoes. I drink a seltzer with dinner and then do some chores and take a shower.
🦷10 PM: Stayed up later than I meant to scrolling TikTok and Reddit. Whoops! I brush my teeth and turn off the lights.
Daily total: $104.30
DAY 5: TUESDAY
🧇8 AM: Roll out of bed and walk 5 steps to my computer. After checking email and signing in, I make protein waffles for breakfast and put on my new knee brace that was delivered last night.
💩10 AM: I take a quick break from writing technical documentation to fold some laundry and tidy up the kitchen. I give Trash Cat some treats and clean out the litterbox. He is a stinky boy.
👨‍💻1:30 PM: I run a meeting with my boss and grandboss about the documentation project I’m currently spearheading. We are migrating into a new (and easier) documentation system, which means I need to export, update, and organize all our current documentation. They’re both pleased with my progress and the next goals I’ve outlined. Maybe I am good at my job? Afterwards, I eat some refried beans with tortilla chips and a seltzer.
🤬4:30 PM: I get a very rude email from a faculty member saying he cannot access a file a student shared with him (and grades are due tonight). He sends me a screenshot and it turns out…he’s clicking the wrong button. I explain the correct steps and attach the student’s file, but I’m so agitated that I sign out early and go for a walk. The weather is beautiful, and I try not to think about the email, but I keep stewing over it. The worst part of working in higher ed is the entitlement - I am often treated like “the help” by the Impossibly Busy Big Brained Professors Who Don’t Have Time For Glitches (FYI, glitches do not care whether you have time for them or not).
📱6 PM: P. and I eat leftovers of our fancy canned bean bowls for dinner and feed Trash Cat. I numb out by scrolling for about 3 hours.
🙄9 PM: I go to bed, but keep thinking about that damn email and then beat myself up for being so sensitive and giving that professor so much of my mental energy off the clock.
Daily total: $0
DAY 6: WEDNESDAY
🥯7 AM: Get out of bed, throw some clothes into my gym bag, get dressed, and run out the door. I stop at Dunkin on the way to work to get an iced coffee and some stuffed bagel minis ($5.45).
🧘‍♀️10 AM: I log into my virtual therapy appointment from my office and talk for 40 minutes straight about everything I am struggling with: my routine is out of whack thanks to my mom’s dinner; I’m mad at my parents, my sister, and my job; my knee is killing me so I can’t work out; I have been a shitty partner and cat mom this week; I am scrolling to numb out instead of reading or relaxing in a meaningful way. My therapist helps me come up with an action plan. I put my phone on bedtime mode to turn it to black and white, make plans with P. for a cozy date night at home this weekend, and bookmark a few jobs to apply for. She reminds me I am a supportive sister and partner and relationships are not 50/50 every single day. We end with a meditation about releasing anger.
☁️11 AM: I meet with a staff member in admissions over Zoom to discuss file back-up in preparation for his new computer. He is actually already synced to our cloud system, meaning that all files are backed up, so the meeting is easy. He asks a few questions about the cloud system and how it works and also provides feedback on some of the tools he feels need guidelines or best practices for usage.
📽️12 PM: Lunch is the last of the fancy bean bowl leftovers and a seltzer (I am a creature of habit). While I eat, I watch budgeting videos on YouTube. I get an email that my credit card has been charged for my therapy copay ($25).
🙃3 PM: I meet virtually with a professor who is, technologically speaking, extremely high-need. I watch her rename and organize files for about an hour. Inevitably, she moves them to the wrong place, accidentally deletes the entire file name, etc. On the bright side, she is very sweet and appreciative of my guidance.
💪4:45 PM: I duck out early to drive to the gym. I let my trainer know what is going on with my knee, so we decide to hit upper today. I only started weightlifting in November and I’ve found I love it so much I am willing to shell out for personal training. After doing my best not to side-eye the men with terrible form (if you need to use your knees to complete a bicep curl, the weight is too heavy), I stretch out and grab dinner from Qdoba: a chicken bowl for me and a steak burrito for P ($24.66 total, $*12.33 *for my half).
🤙7 PM: I call my youngest brother while eating dinner. He is the only one living at home with my parents and needs to vent about what’s going on. I do my best to validate his feelings and remind him he can stop by our apartment whenever he needs to. I wish I could do more.
🚿8 PM: I pack my Qdoba leftovers for lunch, take a shower, and crawl into bed with some sleepy tea and a book.
Daily total: $42.78
DAY 7: THURSDAY
🦶5:30 AM: P. wakes me up by tickling my feet. It is not enjoyable, but it is highly effective. I grab my leftovers and head to the gym.
🚲7 AM: I finish up my cardio workout on the bike, take a quick shower, and change into my work clothes. It’s a little unfair that exercise actually does make you feel better. On the way to work, I stop at Dunkin for iced coffee again but resist getting a snack ($3.31).
🥤9 AM: My morning work consists of emails, tickets, and updating some website pages. I also find a job listing on LinkedIn at another university which is a step up from my current position. A quick look at Glassdoor shows it has a higher employee satisfaction rating than the institution where I work now, and the salary range for this position is at least $10k higher than my current salary. I spend a bit of time fine-tuning my resume and drafting a cover letter while researching the university. It has a much nicer fitness center and a smoothie bar? I know, I know, the grass is always greener…
📚10 AM: Quick walk over to the library for an appointment with the archival specialist. We discuss how to back up her files in preparation for her new computer. She gives me a tour of the rare book collection - first editions of Jane Eyre and David Copperfield, plus a copy of the Nuremberg Chronicle from the fifteenth century. Very cool. For about five minutes, I consider going back to school to get a master’s degree in library science.
🌶️11 AM: Early lunch of my Qdoba leftovers, tortilla chips, and seltzer since I didn’t have breakfast.
🖥️2 PM: I meet with my manager to discuss the documentation project and a new hire initiative in collaboration with HR. The spring semester is officially over, so we have more time on our hands to do some maintenance, clean-up, and proactive support.
🧀5 PM: Work is over! I stop at the grocery store to buy brie, crackers, oat milk, toilet paper, paper towels, and a cup of macaroni. My period is coming and I always crave cheese ($49.55 total, $*24.77 *for my half).
🍴6 PM: P. and I eat a dinner of brie, crackers, and brussel sprouts while watching a few cooking videos on YouTube. We talk about how “emotionally charged” I’ve been for the past few days (P. uses the phrase—he never, ever calls me crazy, irritable, moody, etc.). Eating cheese makes me feel better. Trash Cat and I watch a few episodes of Brooklyn 99.
💊8 PM: Quick shower, meds, and podcasts. I start to doze off.
📞9:30 PM: My brother calls me. I’m confused and groggy, so I miss the call but text him immediately asking if everything is okay. He lets me know he will be fine and I promise to call him tomorrow. It takes me a little while longer to fall asleep; P. comes to bed around 10 PM for cuddles.
Daily total: $28.08
WEEKLY TOTALS (edited)

REFLECTION
This was an above-average spending week for me with my mom’s birthday. Emotionally, it was also not a great week for me, and I often tend to spend more money when I’m upset, although I’ve apparently channeled that compulsion into grocery shopping. I am also trying to test out if smaller, more frequent grocery trips are better for us, since weekly shopping often means we throw out produce or meat.
I’m working on a) digging myself out of credit card debt and b) regulating my emotions, especially when it comes to my family. This particular stressor, and its effects on my finances, waxes and wanes throughout the year - birthdays and holidays tend to bring out the worst in both. However, even with the debt, I still feel like I am pretty financially stable (definitely more so in comparison to where I was as a kid, teen, and younger adult).
Thanks for reading 😼 Let me know if you have any questions!

2024.05.10 12:28 B-SchoolHunter The Great GLIM Scam.

Greetings all, sure hope y'all are doing well. I would like to address a common misconception y'all have w.r.t this supposed B school called Great Lakes Institute of Management , and I would like you to know the particulars of this college before you join it, both for their PGPM as well as PGDM program. I would be talking with respect to the PGPM program, which they claim it to be their flagship course. But the reality is far more grim as compared to what their paid campaigners are showing you on Instagram.
Mr Lakhamraju is addressing the the '25 cohort by saying that we don't encourage companies with packages lower than 12 LPA on campus, but the fact is that this year most of the packages that have come on campus were in the range of 8-12. Companies like Virtusa and TCS are some examples of such low packages, and the fact that they charge you a whopping 21+ lakhs for this course is beyond my comprehension, especially what they will give you is a Post Graduate Certificate in Management (PGCM), not an MBA. They can brand themselves as PGPM all they want, but in reality this would be the most expensive certificate you have ever paid for in your life.
The Placement cell is another joke, they have no coordination with what is happening on the academic frontier. Previous batches had sessions on learning python, R and advanced Excel. This year, they did nothing, as the 15 day period before classes began a.k.a term 0 was all about students loitering about on campus. They taught us nothing with respect to learning skills that were actually essential for interviews, and most of us had to purchase courses to learn a lot of those skills.
The placement team, which is known as CCS on the Chennai Campus, is another joke. These people don't know the basics of how to reach out companies , as all they have learned is how to cold call companies, nothing else. They don't know how to build active relationships. They bring irrelevant opportunities on campus, and when students aren't able to crack those opportunities, they start blaming the students and threatening them that no further opportunities will be given to them. In a batch of 230 ish people, 20 ish are still unplaced from the PGPM batch, and 25ish from the DM batch. For the cohort of 25, they are planning to increase the batch size to 350+. God bless all those gullible students who are going to GLIM Chennai to seek a better life, as the only transformational journey that they are capable of doing is to convert you from middle class to poor.
The full time faculty for operations are a disgrace to teaching. These people don't know how to teach, and to kill time they simply licence simulation softwares and play games in class on those softwares for several classes, nobody knows jackshit about supply chains in general in a course named Supply Chain Management. The visiting faculty however, are really good.
These folks over at CCS will force y'all from day 1 to go and sit in company PPT's even if the role is irrelevant for your profile. They mark attendance for every event, and if you're not attending the session, they will threaten you to kick you out of the placement process. Even after sitting diligently for all sessions, I know several people who are still unplaced and not been given the opportunities they deserve. They are following a singling out strategy where the IT guys who are easier to place are given 30-40 opportunities, while the folks coming from diverse backgrounds are intentionally kept out of the process so that after placing a bunch of IT guys, they can conveniently force y'all to opt out of placements, rendering you worthless and jobless in the blink of an eye.
The companies which they are bringing are 85% startups, where they are intentionally inflating packages by including components like joining bonus, retention bonus, insurance and what not. So some companies with say a 20 LPA CTC will actually give you less than 80k in hand after cutting taxes. These are for those people who are fortunate enough to get a job, the unfortunate ones linger on and the placement team do not care one bit about such folks as they have placed 85% folks from IT. They have kicked out sabbatical peeps from groups and after kicking them out 20 odd are still left. Most of the great Faculty like Dr Easwar Krishna Iyer from marketing have all left this college for much better opportunities, and CCS has this superiority complex that they are the Godfather of students and also their saviours, where in reality they are slow poisoning the lives of students throughout the placement process.
I forgot to mention that during the initial days, these people had admitted a mad psychopath/drug addict onto the premises in term 0. His name was Himan**u, and he used to terrorise the campus for the initial 10 days. Administration didn't care one bit until things got out of hand and he started biting people and light them on fire. The administration closed down the matter, but it was a scary time to live in, especially since these guys only care about counting money, nothing else.
Many people are joining companies that are paying lesser than their Pre MBA salaries, many people are settling for 8LPA jobs after paying 21+ lakhs, and they even had the audacity to bump up the fees this year. Many people, sadly, are still waiting for CCS Mahadeva to actually start doing their job for a change. There were people who were contemplating suicide in the latter half, when companies were simply not coming and what these incompetent placement cell were doing was to sit on their sorry a** and cold call here and there. The placement director is the only one who probably tries to get something done, others are simply worthless who aren't any better than the clerical class.
It is not an MBA program by any stretch of your imagination, as it can still be an extension to your IT undergrad degree. Even after that, these people have the audacity to increase diversity, where in reality they are not even competent enough to place their IT folks, let alone the diverse peeps. The Branding committee is forcing that one guy on campus who got a finance role to say out loud on camera that many finance companies come on campus, when in reality, there's absolutely nothing. Companies are coming on campus not to test your B school knowledge, but you are made to write lines in R and Python to qualify rounds. They are paying YouTubers like Inside IIM and Catking ; yeah right Catking of all people to promote this scam that is happening in the name of education. Whatever little respect I had for the college went away post that in incident.
The most shady thing that CCS has done is that they hadn't disclosed that there is a cap of 10 companies to which you can apply, and they disclosed this document in January when the majority had exhausted their 10 attempts. They used to ask us all to keep on applying, but when the day came they started shouting at us that we didn't have the audacity to ask them about future companies because we had exhausted our limit of attempts. Moreover, most of the companies who came on campus conducted interviews and later on when they found out it's a one year MBA, they simply abandoned the process and left. Companies on Campus aren't recognising a one year program, imagine those folks who aren't even supported by the placement cell because of their egoistic outlook towards their students. The only one year program most of these corporates recognise is an ISB, the only good thing that GLIM has done is that they have spent heavily on marketing, thereby entrapping gullible students like you and me to fall for their trap, eventually ending up losing everything.
In Conclusion, from what I've heard, these people are planning to change their positioning from analytics to a proper MBA curriculum, and they are taking many non IT folks in this year's cohort. To every non IT guy planning to join the PGPM program, if you have money to burn please do so. But don't expect any support from this so called placement cell at GLIM. You would be stuck in the crossfire, and eventually you'll end up committing financial suicide. Don't blindly consume information that these supposed B schools throw at you, Sabdhan Rahiye, Satark Rahiye.
The only purpose of the PGPM program is that you can be unemployed 1 year earlier, after paying 15-20% more fees as compared to the regular PGDM program. Beware of wannabe Tier 2's Trying to be Tier 1's in the market. Take care y'all.

2024.05.09 17:58 Broad_Ad5455 Title ye ki Mat padho jee adv ke liye usmei bhi neet waale hi hai

Unacademy ne ek jee advanced ke liye 21 din ka crash course nikala hai mere ghar ke pass offline centre pe 999/- ke liye. Basically kya hua hai ki jo teachers padha rahe hai woh fiitjee ke top teachers the magar kyuki FIITJEE ne 3 mahine salary nahi di toh almost saarw top faculty ne leave kr diya. Mai toh last batch ka tha centre ke aur unn top teachers se padhna toh sapne se kam nhi tha . Toh mains qualify ho gaya mera toh mai wahi padh rha tha kuch din se. Basically FIITJEE ke purane baccho ke liye hi hai ye batch kyuki teachers ne yahi soch kr shuru kiya tha.
Aaj ek naya ladka aaya batch mei . Normal looking guy. Maine conversation strike up ki bhai kaisa gaya mains . Tph kehta mai neet ka hu magar mains theek hi tha. Maine percentile poocha toh kehta 98.5 physics mei 100 thi. And I am like tf.
Ab isne mujhse poochi meri toh meri toh G fat gayi maine toh bol deya kam hi hai rehne de.(94.59). 2024.05.09 14:40 hoccerypost Toxic work culture

I’m a new TT faculty. I was at a social event the other day at my school and was chatting with an older faculty member of a different department and an administrator. When it came up that I was new the older faculty looked to the administrator and said, “time to load them up with lots of committees!” the admin nodded in agreement. Very much “I suffered unpaid service and now it’s your turn” vibes. I wish I could have went into a big rant about inflation and the cost of living/housing now relative to salaries.

2024.05.09 13:21 Secure_Dark2988 Letter from OPSEU President JP Hornick to Doug Ford on Fleming Program Cuts

"Dear Premier, Dear Minister:
We write with urgency to say: the suspension of 29 programs at Fleming College is wholly unacceptable and must be paused immediately.
We are deeply concerned that these suspensions will cause irreparable harm to students’ futures and to the ability of employers to recruit trained graduates in occupations critical to the economy and the environment. Graduates from Fleming College are a major recruiting pool for local and regional industry employers, driving economic prosperity back into surrounding communities. We note that several of the programs being cut feed directly into jobs your government is recruiting for in the Ontario Public Service.
In a study calculating the benefit to the regional business community, Fleming College analysed the economic value of the college on the Central Eastern Ontario economy in 2017-18. In total, Fleming College and its students added $497.5 million in annual income to the Central Eastern Ontario economy, approximately equal to 6 percent of the region’s total gross regional product. The college estimated that one of every 18 jobs in the region was supported by the activities of Fleming College and its students. Included in this nearly half-billion-dollar total figure illustrating economic impact is $37.4 million in local spending by students – contributing directly to local economic prosperity – and $352.6 million in added income by thousands of Fleming College alumni across the province.
With these stunning figures in mind, we are sounding the alarm around the recent suspensions of 29 programs at Fleming College – which brings the total program suspensions at Fleming College up to 42 in a 12-month period, if we consider the 13 programs cancelled in 2023. Some of these programs are not offered anywhere else in the region. In addition, the cuts to Fleming programs will limit students from accessing educational pathways to nearby Trent University. Several of the Fleming programs have partnership agreements with Trent and other universities.
Rather than correcting course with a look towards young people’s future and economic prosperity, Fleming College is eroding pathways to employment. There are others means of budget management. Publiclyaccessible reports from Fleming College’s Finance and Audit Committee note a projected surplus of $38.4 million for the 2023/2024 fiscal year, bringing the accumulated surplus over the past couple of years to roughly $79 million. In such a financial context, why is the Fleming College community left reeling from suspensions to over one-fifth of total offered programs in the period of only a year?
We urge you to put an immediate pause on the suspension of the programs while an open and transparent investigation is carried out. We believe such an investigation must examine:
Why were Board of Governors’ members, internal to Fleming, except for President Maureen Adamson, barred from attending the Board meeting on April 23, 2024, that approved the program cuts?
Did the Board of Governors meeting have quorum when the vote to cut the 29 programs happened?
Did Fleming administrators follow the posted Program Efficacy Review process? Was the weighting for various components changed without an open and transparent review process?
Where is the enrolment data to prove the 29 programs were under-subscribed, as President Adamson claimed in her communication of May 1, and why has the current enrolment data been scrubbed from Fleming’s information systems?
Why were the program advisory committees, mandated under the Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology Act, 2002, not consulted in advance of the program suspensions, ultimately removing the valuable input of industry and community members?
Why has the college refused to disclose the data used in formulating these decisions to the union as required by the employment stability sections of the staff and faculty collective agreements? This is a flagrant contravention of an arbitrator’s decision issued in February 2023 in a grievance case at Fleming College.
Why has Fleming College experienced a significantly high turnover of non-unionized staff at the most senior levels throughout the three-plus years of President Adamson’s tenure?
Why do program suspensions come after continued growth in these non-unionized administrative roles across the college, with an estimated 28 unionized faculty and staff positions for every excluded and management role earning above $100,000?
We are deeply concerned that unless steps are taken, mismanagement will continue at Fleming College to the detriment of students, faculty and staff and the wider community.
President Adamson is claiming that the reduction in international students is the reason for the program suspensions. We categorically do not believe this to be the case. We believe that a transparent investigation, with the results publicly reported, must be undertaken. We are concerned that we are looking at another Laurentian University, where the Auditor General found that the primary cause of the university’s decline was not external factors such as the tuition freezes and the COVID-19 pandemic, but poor financial management. We note the Auditor General found that high senior administrator salaries and expenses, and inappropriate human resources practices negatively impacted Laurentian’s financial picture.
We urge your government to safeguard students’ futures, as well as the economic health and environmental well-being of the province by immediately issuing a binding directive to pause the program suspensions at Fleming College.
We look forward to your immediate response.
Yours sincerely,
JP Hornick, OPSEU/SEFPO President Christine Kelsey, chair, OPSEU/SEFPO College Support Full-Time Division Jonathan Singer, chair, OPSEU/SEFPO College Faculty Division Sara McArthur Timofejew, chair, OPSEU/SEFPO College Support Part-Time Division Liz Mathewson, president, OPSEU/SEFPO Local 352, Fleming faculty Marcia Steeves, president, OPSEU/SEFPO Local 351, Fleming support staff

2024.05.08 22:01 the_Stick Are Any of You Contemplating Withholding Grades?

This concerns me on a level I'm not sure I've encountered before. A group of UNC faculty are threatening to not enter grades for their classes in response to the arrest of student protestors on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Local media (and national) have glommed on to the story and are painting it as a kind of "all faculty" support this (and the authors of the letter, linked in the article I linked, also aver that there is overwhelming support for their position. In reality, the number of signatories is less than 5% of the employee population, but that is still a significant number. There is clearly a strong movement to oppose the administration that has some support.
But something about this bothers me, on a fundamental level. Ostensibly, this is to support the students who were arrested. There were sixteen students arrested. To put that in context, over the past few years, there have been ~150% more student suicides in the UNC-System (I couldn't find data just for the UNC-CH system), and while the nine at NC State garnered press and calls to "do something" about student mental health, there was no outrage or organized threats of action by faculty. It's less than half the annual number of sexual assaults on-campus, but again no action from faculty. It seems as if there is a very limited definition of concern for student health.
I also find the letter accusing administration of misinformation disingenuous, since the letter also contains misinformation. Police were not involved even when protestors removed the US flag and replaced it with a Palestinian flag. The university removed that flag and restored the US flag, and protestors moved in to again take it down. Other students objected to that and 'protected' the flag (again making national news), and were subjected to being pelted with thrown items. It's not a non-violent demonstration when one is yeeting bottles at someone's head.
Still, even with the disinformation, I should admire the faculty for uniting for a cause. But something bothers me and makes it difficult to support my erstwhile colleagues. It could be that they are coming together to protest "genocide" -- but did nothing for the other genocide, or that other genocide, or even the other other genocide taking place by both literal and legal definitions. What makes this one so stridently urgent? Do we only care about one specific group? Does a victim have to be well-funded and have a massive PR campaign to garner support?
But let's leave even that aside. There is no question that the actions in Gaza have minimal impact on the daily lives of most of these people. Nukes could go off in Gaza or Jerusalem and it wouldn't make much difference in our daily lives. But the UNC system has recently undergone massive, internal changes and experienced a huge amount of drama. From post-tenure review changes to rpk consulting savaging UNC institutions (and continuing to be hired to do so) to questions about funding and spending to the UNC BOG and Trustees issues, these all affect the daily lives and livelihoods of almost every faculty member. And while there was an outcry, there was no unified campaign or threats to withhold grades or take other actions that would cause a lot of pain to the UNC system. People bitched and then went about their day. If these same faculty who claim to represent all of us were as dedicated and strident in their approach to the reorganization (and some woudl say decimation) of the UNC system, maybe there would be a few hundred people laid off. Maybe UNCG would still have one of only two (now one) specialized math programs in the country. Maybe faculty salaries wouldn't be as compressed. Maybe shared governance would not be as big a joke (or outright lie) as it is now.
Frankly, it pisses me off to see my colleagues fixate on something they cannot control for inexplicable reasons when they have a history of ignoring the very real problems that could be addressed and fixed within the system if only they would work together with all of us to curtail what has been happening. And rather than crowing about how "we are all united for our students," they might actually sincerely represent faculty concerns and not just appear to be jumping into performative culture clash. I lost a lot of respect for them telling me that I must support them and the 0.05% of the student body who were arrested when they have spent the past decade all but ignoring the very real concerns that affect >90% of students, faculty and staff. There are a thousand better ways to serve our constituents than the actions they are taking, but they won't hear it. Maybe that's what disconcerts me the most -- the realization that a Ph.D. doesn't mean you're very smart after all.
