This post is quite large, the first 2 parts are a rant about Aegon the first and House Targaryen and the third isn't as much a charachter rant as a rant about the lack of charachters of some parts of Asoiaf lore and what I considered it failures in worldbuilding that have led up to it. The final one explores the under laying issues behind all of this.
The humour (because I refuse to write a post this big about something I hate without humour) and the more sideline stuff will be marked as a spoiler, there aren't really any spoilers here except something Daemon does early on and the fate of Aegon's younger sister first wife which takes place several hundred years before HotD and GoT both will be marked too, both of these spoilers are minor parts of section 1 and 3 respectevely but neither are big.
1 Aegon is a Gary Stu 100% and I don't know why people struggle to see him as that (+ issues with house Targaryen in this time period)
I don't think he is nearly as cool as William the Conqueror the fact that he married both of his sisters (and likely got cucked by atleast one) is super icky and dosen't make that much sense and him being retconned to being a straightforward good guy is the final nail in the coffin for me.
Many Pre-Blackfyre (not including Aegon the Unworthy which I actually like as a bad king and gets developed in that way instead of book Viserys just stirring as much shit as posible for very little reason) Targaryen kings strike me as Gary Stus (this point won't be elaborated on because I don't have B&F here and the post is long enough, sufice to say House Targaryen gets to have all of the cool stuff even surpasing other houses at their niche while other houses are usually pretty one faced) who wouldn't have been capable of holding a small realm irl, much less a continent , Aegon is the most exagerated example of that.
The nobility hates him
The church hates him
The commonfolk hate him
The order of facechanging assasins living next door who descend from slaves his people used to abuse and experiment on hate him.
Big pharma hates him due to his bloodline hability to be inmune to generations of incest
Matpat probably loves him due to his theory about the GoT ending being right.
How the fuck has this guy not been murdered in a world as full of intrigue as Westeros? wtf is this guy even feeding his armies or his dragons?
The fucking dumbass spends all day burning his fields and going scorched earth would completely fuck with his tactics of "throw dragon at problem if problem not solved throw more dragon at problem unitl problem solved" , fortunatly he got plot armoured out of having to conquer the North, the largest of the kingdoms he ruled over, how or why were the northen houses (which include House Bolton who shas a claim to the North) fine with this to the point of not asking questions is beyond me.
As far as I remeber it's not like the feudal contract between the Starks and the crown is particularly generous so Torrhen Stark just accepted to get taxed as much as the Riverlanders (who Aegon had freed from slavery and granted land) because Rhaenys saw him fuck a goat and he didn't want her to tell on him or something.
Futhermore the North's religion is unique, and now he has accepted to be in a realm mostly consistent of people of another religion, during the Middle Ages in a world where fanatics of the Seven Pointed Star exist, under a liege lord that would eventually convert.
Aegon, a fellow inspired and who is meant to mirror William the Conqueror , who was pretty morally ambiguous irl, and who's consequences of his actions lead up to the of thousands of innocent people and several wars is supposed to be sympathetic.
Aegon isn't build as a bastard, in fact we are kinda supposed to sympathese with him specially after the dagger retcon, GRRM just won't let be a Targaryen main charachter be evil, I don't want the author to remind me that "acktually this charachter who you have seen behave like an absolute bastard isn't really that evil because... " fuck that, if you show me Aegon behaving like a remorseless psycopath I don't care what your intention while writting him was , "Daemon is made out of light and dark in equal parts" fuck that man that's not the charachter you've written, that guy has done nothing good in his life, ffs in the books he might have killed his wife for his own selfish interests. You named the guy Demon ffs , don't go back and try to convince me he is sympathetic.
It's absurd how much favoritism this house gets inside the narrative, mixing some of the most obnoxious fantasy tropes into a single bloodline:
White hair? Check
Special eye colour? Check
I understand that these 2 might have not been as generic as they were when the series started but they definetly were when F&B was published
Last of their kind trope? Check
Descended from nobility even if the books are critical of the feudal system? Check
Chosen ones to save the world ? Check
Dragon riders? Check (kinda deserves it's own post to explain why I find dragon riders annoying but it's mostly stuff that has been complained about before how unpractical it is, how dumb it looks, dragons probably being better on their own...)
Humble origin? Fucking somehow check too, given that they are supposed to be a very small house when they arrived at Dragonstone, which kinda poses it's own issues regarding House Celtigar and Velaryon but it's best to not explore them rn as as I said the post is already long enough.
Own religion disregarding the traditional one which is totes super evil and represive? Check.
These tropes are already annoying when on a random fantasy charachter but they pose a lot more issues when they affect the ruling house of a realm, specially the unique religion one because you would think that the rulers disregarding the traditional religion of an entire continent in a world that has somehow been stucked in the Middle ages for allegedly hundreds of years is insane.
2 I don't care who the IRS sends I refuse to pay my taxes
How he is even able to tax anything beyond the street he lives in is insane given that he is ruling over a continent which has never unified before and dosen't have centuries of chinese burocracy behind it , the clergy should consider him to be (with good reason) the anticrist , the commonfolk don't have money and sure as fuck neither Dorne nor the Free cities are going to be willing to trade with him.
Contraband is going to be rampant, and again in a world as full of intrigue as Westeros I don't believe the lords are going to be enforcing his laws unless Balerion is directly staring and them specially now that they are poorer because of him and the clergy is telling them not to behind closed doors, it's not like Aegon established a secret police (he wouldn't even had had the money to do so) .
You can argue that some lords like Orys Baratheon owed everything to Aegon, but those lords have their own troubles in legitimasing their rule now that they are among the most important in the realm and without an army to back them or money is not like they can afford to stress their rule over the minor nobility which should be the ones to mostly profit from the situation short term as now most of the realm rellies on them deciding to collaborate. They are going to be forced to be granting priviledges to ensure they do their job.
Again this is the Middle ages these guys rule because god sayed so, and while the church might have to oficially recognised them, they can't be forced to preach whatever the crown desires behind closed doors, Aegon's conquest should mean a great trauma to the region, no one beyond the people that directly depend on them is going to support that bloodline, and once the first generation of appointed rulers have passed on, that is really is no one.
Of course some of these problems would be solved if the distances weren't so wonky and Westeros was the size of let's say England , but I refuse to believe Aegon is literally sending Visenya to a town in the middle of the riverlands to collect the 3 sheeps it owes the crown every month (although it's very funny to imagine it).
3 Dragons are just that strong
I think it is very lame how the conquest is Aegon going "nuh uh I have dragons", to every battle even if the Westorosi should have bigger armies and wayyyy better generals. Is kinda boring to see that the whole conflict has no tension because the Targaryens at any point can say , "nuh uh I have dragons".
Harrenhal? Nuh uh I have dragons.
The Eyre? Nuh uh I have dragons.
The iron Isles (which should be unassailable as soon as they get balistas) ? Nuh uh GRRM kinda forgot to write this part .
Even when Rhaenys gets killed in Dorne ,dornish weapons now don't affect Balerion because Aegon is like super angry and thus inmune to consequences from bad judgement calls (let's go to the one place that has weapons capable of killing me,>! and have in fact killed my sister a couple weeks ago!<, yes I am a great tactician how did you know?) , even if the dornish should be pretty good at countering dragons by this point due to terrain and the fact that they have fought against dragons before.
Dragons are an issue there is no way around it , it's really weird that in a world were dragons had been the norm for hundreds of years no one had a reliable answer, Chariots were the norm, and a counter was developed, Phalanxes were the norm and a counter was developed, the roman empires' troops were more heterogeneous but they still were able to be countered and defeated .
It's odd that in a world that makes callbacks to irl history the only ones that have access to unbeatable magic bullshit are the valyrians and the rest can only suck up despite hints that they might have access to magic bullshit too, it would be fine if dragons were the strongest magical bullshit, but it's absurd that no one can counter that whatsoever.
What's more is that Rhaenys' incident is either extremely lucky / caused by her own idiocy (which is weird given that she is a veteran dragonrider by this point) and leaves the Targaryen as fucking dumbasses for not invading Dorne anyway and just a cheap way for GRRM to make something happen to her while asking the reader to never think more of it or to how she died or how Aegon surviving Dorne after is just plot armour or the Westerosi nobility really just forgot that they can make their own with the same wood they are taxing.
In anyway the ballistas being introduced lampshades the issue of dragons being op, because they aren't nearly as relevant as they should, they are introduced wayyyy to late into the narrative (like c'mon no one ever came up with "shot arrow but faster an" even though their families being burnt depended on it during hundreds of years?) and the fact that they weren't refined and mass produced enough into them being atleast decent against dragons leads me to believe my 9 year old niece would be a better duke than any westerosi/essosi noble.
And honestly, as soon as a dragon lands, that rider is getting sniped, actually nevermid I forgot that the Targaryens also have the best archespymastewizard/seer in the setting in Bloodraven.
Dragons are cheap and lazy answer to "how did valirya/Targaryens get this strong?" Instead of the author having to work on an answer that would be complicated or have to create charachters that drive the Valiryan empire forward the answer is "duh they have big fire lizard things"
The following paragraphs are about other fantasy settings and how they handle their own current hegemons/fallen empires.
Why is the Empire of Reikland the hegemon of the warhammer world?
Humans breed faster, they have access to better technologies than their neighbours, their gods are active , they have had a history of poor and great rulers (currently having an amazing one), they are the most reasonable power and they are a diplomatic superpower due to having no grudges with adjacent factions, it's also pretty good at supressing chaos cults.
It has it flaws as it being decentralised leads to internal conflict and it would be utimnatly unable to compete with a great host of another faction, one to one an emperial army that unable to heavely relly on gunpoweder (which can't even be used against every foe effectively) will always lose against a great host of elves (as they are just able to field objectevely better soldiers and mosters) dwarfs (as they are able to field better gunpowder and soldiers), conversely while an empiral army is greater in quality than an undead or skaven army those factions have a way easier time replanishing their casualties.
Why is Niflgard the Hegemon of the Witcher world?
It is technologically more advanced than any of it's neighbours, it is generally better managed , it dosen't have the racial/religious tensions the northen kingdoms have, it can use mages more reliably , it is better at spying, access to slave labour, it is able to field larger armies , it is far more stable than it's neighbours and the Impirial court is more advanced than any of it's neighbours
It has flaws , though it's armies are vast the empire is overextended, it's bad at dealing with monsters due to having purged it's own witchers (or never having them depending on the source) which is a problem as wars tend to create them , it's armies struggle (kinda) with the different climates , the empire being stable rellies on the emperor being competent and it's slave trade forces the empire to continue expanding, upon succesive failed campaings supply of slaves can be complicated and harm the economy
Why was Ventrue Rome the Hegemon in Princes of Darkness (I'm going with PoD because WoD lore is more ambiguous and has gone through many retcons) ?
It was technologically more advanced and cohesive than it's original rivals in the Gangrel celts , it was generally better managed , it dosen't have as many tensions with other clans except the Brujah as it meant the colaboration of most other clans, unlike the Brujah , the Salubri , the Assamites , the setites or the Tmiscze it dosen't seem to have been weakened as much by the baali wars or have been tainted by infernalism.
After the fall of Carthage Camilla it's most influencial leader for hundreds of years was corrupted by an ideology kinda adherent to infernalism focused on hedonism, so that fucks with our point of Ventrue Rome not being weakened by infernalism.
Driving the leading clan the Ventrue into an schisim some being fanatic stoics and others being tainted by Camilla's ideas, this fucks with our previous point of them being better managed as there is now faccionalism in it's goverment.
Seeing the clusterfuck Rome has become one of the most powerfull Toreador vampires has denouced the central goverment and taken his whole clan which so far hadn't been particularly ambitious and many other leaders of other clans to it's own breakaway state after this another Ventrue figure has fucked off to Britain making it his own furthering weakening the main Clan , so that fucks with our point of Ventrue Rome being more cohesive.
What's worse is that first the Gangrel and then the Brujah have rallied around new figures which have been dealing both political blows (taking away some LaSombra and Nosferatu vampires to the Brujah cause) and military ones , so that fucks with Ventrue Rome having larger armies.
Finally the LaSombra clan has pretty much decided the Ventrue can go fuck themselves now that there is land to grab easily and their own clan has had politcal problems because of the Brujah and appropiated much of the Mediterranean and the Iberian peninsula, while many Ventrue have decided to start over in Germany and the Nosferatu always were there because Ventrue Rome was the biggest power at the time.
Why is/was the Empire of Tamriel the Hegemon of the Elder Scrolls world?
....
No one stole dragon eggs to breed, no valyrian lord went independant and created it's own dragon realm outside valyria except the Targaryens (which is absurd given how powerhungry they are written to be) which were a relatevely small house (also Idk why they didn't conquer most of Westeros as soon as they got there).
All around it sucks because in a narrative that's supposed to be complex and ask the reader to think further you aren't meant to think about how the fuck did the Targs or the Vals came to power and managed to hold it for so long.
Like just implement something that banes them, why have the evil ambituous , scheming Tmiszce expanded beyond Carpathia? Well it turns out that they are bound to those lands and struggle to get away from them.
Maybe the dragons could get ill if they get away from Valerya, maybe as some short of curse from the Rhoynar that came as a vengeance from their conquest and was removed by the Doom of Valerya, which the Targaryens were capable of scaping narrowly because of the dream of their ancestor (which is already canon), this would add mistery to the Doom , as maybe it was the valeryans trying to remove the Rhoynar curse except they fucked up, give us names as to who did what , why and what were the consequences of "Ops Valeryans are gone their plannet needed them"
You also don't get the impression of the valyrian nobles being particulary smart or capable because of the fucking dragons, in fact you get the idea that if anything they were a bunch of dumbasses given that despite them being unbeatable on the field and seemingly unvunarable to civil unrest (aside from the slaves that would form Braavos somehow scaping) they weren't able to crush the Dothraki or other external threads and their realm was relatevely small compared to what the romans or the persians got irl, or how much did the Targs seem to struggle with the stepstones, just fly to Lys ,Volatis and Tyrosh and nuke them you fucking dummies.
The only guys that may have had something capable of countering Valerya is Braavos with the faceless men (it's super weird that they just have the most efficient assasins ever and that's it) and those fellows didn't seem to mind the powerhungry dragon lords that kept them as slaves conquering the continent next to them lol.
The "there wasn't any other way to go around it if one has dragons point" is moot because ultimatly that was a choice that was taken by the author that made the history less engaging and he could have choosen to just not take it.
The problem ultimatly is that when writting Fire & Blood or any of the Westeros world for that matter GRRM knew that the story had to arrive at a desired outcome (the Westeros world of A Game of Thrones) and that completely fucks with the whole "gardening writting style" that is fucking non-sense any way, so the only way GRRM saw to arrive at Westeros was making dragons into nukes, and because he was kinda forced to write Fire and Blood and not delay it 50 times and also restricted by pre-stablished lore and ideas he had about the story, he wasn't able to atleast balance that decision.
Actions and consequences , charachters being both people and influencial politicians with their own ideologys, a fall of an empire lasting hundreds of years happening over hundreds of years, we get to know many of the long past leaders of these factions and how their actions affected the world even if we never meet them are just not there,
Even the Dance of the Dragon is much better written as a fall history than the Fall of Valirya (lmao your socerers big died you goof)
End The underlaying issues
One of the issues Pre-Blackfyre stuff has is that GRRM loves to have it's cake and eat it too (no pun intended I don't want to criticise him for his weight) and during that period he is free to write as high fantasy as he wants, the original series points out incestous relationships are bad? Well better point out that acktually there can be positive too, religion fanatism bad? acktually the dragons were killed by religious fanatics defending the future of their continent which idk how the fanbase percieves as something bad (also you probably know how I feel about dragons being killed by common folk after the dragon rant ).
Introducing concepts and ideas that have nothing to do with the themes , Asoiaf didn't need to have an ancient prophetic hyperadvanced world spanning virtuous hyperborea chinese empire (following the steps of GRRM I'm just gonna drop this concept leave you to question if it really is canon or the writer of this is just making shit up at this point or just insane) , it didn't to have weird genetic experiments by the valiryans (the dragon worms were kinda cool ngl), and it sure asf didn't need to have a women moaning so loudly when she was getting fucked by her brother-husband that a maester considered it worthwhile writting it down on a chronicle.
And that's another thing that bothers me it's that GRRM dosen't even commit to an answer he opens himself a backdoor to an easy retcon, in a book that people only buy to know more of the ASOIAF lore,>! following in his steps too, I decided to add information about settings you weren't interested in just because I consider them cool (and because if I don't praise/reference PoD in every post I make here wtf is even the point tbh)!< even though you just wanted to see an Asoiaf rant, except atleast I had the decency to flag what was unimportant and will not be adding lovecraftian elements into my narritive an undetermined amount of time after the release of this post in a follow up that might exist or might just be a way to fuck with my editor.

This turned out to be more controversial and more engaged with than I thought it be given the lenght of the post, I honestly don't understand what the fanbase sees in this guy, to me is as bland as a bread and the most enjoyment I get from him as a charachter is from making fun at him, I really mean it it's one of my least liked charachters and I think it's a good example of the issues House Targaryen has in general just how the treatment Valyria gets is a good example of the issues of the wider asoiaf lore.
I'm seeing the complaint that big conquerors exist irl and I by my logic they are Gary Stus too? I might have not make myself clear , my problem is not that Aegon conquered Westeros my problem is that the conquest of Westeros is boring asf.
My problem is not that Aegon is good at everything, but that he was granted the hability to be good at everything because he has dragons, we never see Aegon or the Valeryans developing smart tactics that use dragons or being a good politician or both, he just tosses dragons at problems and then were are told not showned that he was actually great at strategy which is absurd, the dragons being as op as they are makes pre-dance lore significantly worse.
I also have seen incest not being as dangerous as I claim it is being brought up? This is weird to me because it's more of a side point about Aegon breaking religious tabuus of all the peoples he intends to conquer for no reason and him being a bad politcian refusing any marriage alliance, although it is also icky which makes it even weirder that that's a detail GRRM decided to include
I don't want to go into depth about the genetic consequences of incest because : 1 it is a tangent , 2I don't much about biology the biology and 3 honestly I don't care enough about this particular detail as much as I care it being a dumbass decision politcally .
So I'm just gonna link the matpat video I referenced earlier because is the reason why I think that Targ genes are treated super weirdly. Targ genes have to be magical for the amount of incest they carry out having not killing them yet and their bloodline being magical in anyway fucks with the point of the story criticising feudalism and nobility.
I apreciate the comments as I like discussing fantasy lore with other fans and there are people that have raised good points which I apreciate , I had fun writting this and I'm glad some people have liked it and whoemever dosen't feel free to criticise it.

I recently finished my binge watch, it's one of the better romance anime series that I've seen, having just got into the subgenre last month with Toradora, Kimi Ni Todoke afterwards and then Komi Can't Communicate. I never thought that this sort of thing would appeal to me but here we are! I'm a fan of storytelling, so I'm glad to be proven wrong. The pacing of the first season of Quintessential Quintuplets was absolutely superb. I can't think of many other anime that have such a strong initial dozen episodes. The second season was nearly as good but had little things that annoyed me, such as the firing/quitting retread and Futaro inexplicably failing to recognise them despite their differing hair colours/styles/voices. Petty quibbles there, and the season wasn't too far off S1. I wasn't crazy about the film, finding it slow and then the choice itself being rushed and ill-explained, but it was only 6 episodes worth of content out of a total of 30 episodes, if you want to look at it that way, so even if you weren't a fan, you can say that you enjoyed the first 80% of the series. The likes of Game of Thrones and Death Note have much lower percentages of peak content, with the decline being multiple seasons for the former and the entire last third for the latter, so I'll take my 80%/first 2 seasons and praise the Quintessential Quintuplets overall. Arguably the best romance anime that I've seen, perhaps better than Toradora even, and I'd like suggestions for ones to watch next if you could list some of your favourites. With that said, the choice for the bride was highly controversial in my mind and I'd like to vent some of my issues(!). There are a few things to discuss that I haven't seen others talk about on QQ threads as well.
My first issue is with the sidelining of Itsuki. Initially, she seemed like a sure thing. Being in with his family, staying over during the dispute, going over for dinner another time and connecting with Raiha and her father, that's a huge part in settling with a future partner. No other quint had that. Itsuki was even the first to essentially go on a date with Futaro at the arcades. She understood his desperation for the job and that wage, why it was so important, establishing an insight into his selflessness. This was a connection that the others never really had. But being the 1st one that he interacted with in the opening scene, being such an obvious pick for The One, I feel like the writer thought that he needed to subvert expectations and she was essentially abandoned for the bulk of the series. Cast aside, despite him being as comfortable around her as he was around Yotsuba (that comfort being the main factor in his choosing). They sidelined Itsuki by reducing her to a mother figure, yet that was Ichika's whole deal up until that point!
You can't have two mother types now, so Ichika became a backstabber to ruin her character as well. It didn't feel like a natural progression for either character, more like the writer just wanted them out of the way and couldn't think of a better way to do it. Ichika also clearly had an understanding of Futaro that the others lacked, a mature insight and tenderness shown throughout, from the fireworks festival, the camp shed to resting on his shoulder. Realistically, she progressed the furthest with him. She gently pointed him in the right direction whenever he made a mistake and looked after her siblings much as he did with Raiha. They were the real mother and father types and you could argue that they made the most sense together on paper. Though I do think that she was too mature for him and between that and her career, they weren't right for each other long-term, in my opinion.
In any other story, it would've been between Itsuki and Miku. Miku spent so much effort coming out of her shell and improving for him, yet it was all for nothing, presumably to subvert expectations as well. Their date went well, she even confessed her feelings and his response was telling. Having her take it back and claim that she was talking to her sisters felt like another cop out, another elimination to make way for the eventual choice, none of this feeling natural at all, given that Miku was the first to show feelings and strong ones throughout at that.
Nino was a real dark horse, arguably having the broadest character development of the series. Again, hard to see her personality gel with Futaro's long-term, however they did have clear chemistry. He was taken aback by how sweet she was in the forest and their frankness at the hotel had the comfort and honesty of a long-term relationship. Maybe it was more than a simple pursuit and she could've stayed that way around him.
Finally, we get to Yotsuba. Every other character was a better fit. The absolute worst choice with the least development in the entire series, picked in the most rushed way possible. She was child-like! Essentially an older, more agreeable Raiha, which makes it so strange to me that the writer went down this path. Nino, Miku and Ichika went out of their way to appeal to him, Nino and Miku going so far as to improve themselves as people to be worthy of him, yet Yotsuba was never more than a jovial friend, a little sister type. Starting off as friends is fine IF it leads to more, but we never had that requisite chemistry explored and other than the jokey confession that was played off in episode 8, there was nothing between them. Their date wasn't even romantic, to my recollection, more like two friends hanging out. Compared to the other four, Futaro's romantic chemistry with her was almost non-existent and thus him choosing her was inexplicable. He didn't respect her intelligence either, frequently calling her the dumbest one and patronising her. The tacked on backstory of Yotsuba being the smart one made no sense considering that she slipped from receiving 30 points in tests to 29 points... to then getting 8 out of 100 on her first test right after getting transferred?! That didn't make any sense. The writer seemed to get bored and presumably just wanted to end the whole story, regardless of it making sense.
Second to Yotsuba, the biggest problem was that Futaro himself was strangely never made to show any romantic tendencies throughout the series, which was a serious problem in hindsight. Due to that, he remained little more than a big brothefather figure type in our perspective of him, surrounded by five girls who were starved of male attention, had no boyfriends or even a present father figure. Futaro's instructional nature never gave way to a more level connection to any of the girls, leaving the romance one-sided on their part and the eventual choosing (of any of them) to be quite bizarre. He even said he'd rather not choose any of them in the film, which bolsters my point. It honestly WOULD'VE been better if he had chosen none of them, with this in mind, given his lack of development.
Reading other threads, some have commented that the quints trying to change for the better was more about their growth, as an excuse for why it's good that they didn't end up with Futaro. Although it's a pretty common case in real life of people dusting themselves off and presenting their best selves to be worthy partners, this is celebrated too. Better physiques, better careers/studying, coming out of one's shell and being confident, that Nino and Miku changed for the better shouldn't disqualify them from being viable picks. The puzzling sidelining of Itsuki and character assassination of Ichika don't get enough recognition either.
I really enjoyed this series for a good 80% of it, and with tv you take what you can get while it's good. It's just a shame that it didn't stick the landing and went with the most controversial option in the most haphazard way.

Chapter 1
On a warm spring evening, in an average teenager’s room, he sits at his desk. The wind breezes through the open window, inviting in the sounds of the adjacent footpath and street, as well as what seems like the majority of species of creatures flying in to revel in the glorious light of the lamp perched upon a white cupboard. They dance in euphoria before his eyes, buzzing in his face with a constant hum before being mercilessly stripped of their source of contentment and wafted out by frantically swinging arms. The footsteps of a man walking about echo into the apartment with the exclamation “Son, I’m back!”, cutting through the serene sonic backdrop of the peaceful neighbourhood like a knife through butter. As the sun retreats to the darkness from whence it came, its blessed rays begin saying their goodbyes for the day and hide before the shine of distant stars, leaving him in the dark. He, however, does not move to turn his lamp back on, instead choosing to focus on the gusts of moving air hitting his bare arms, blowing on the cotton threads shielding his body. Only in this tranquil environment can he think and reflect: how he is actually doing. What he wants most. Whose company he enjoys truly, and whose he finds detestable. Oh, how he wishes he could think so perfectly clearly more often than just on these pleasant evenings…
This line of thought is abruptly interrupted by his father opening the door: “Shouldn’t you be doing your homework?” He mumbles something back, causing the father to sigh and put his arm around him:
“Listen, Matt, I have no idea what’s been going on with you lately. Your grades are falling, you don’t invite your friends over like you used to, and you never talk to me anymore. Is there something wrong? Oh, and aren’t you cold with this window wide open?” the father remarks, leaning forward to push the glass panel back into place with a light thud, instantly muting the chatter of pedestrians and bird’s singing outside. To this, Matt just mumbles more.
“Mumbling like that all day ain’t gonna solve your problems, son” says the father. “In fact, it will only make things worse. If you don’t want to tell me what’s going on, that’s fine, but at least let me know of that upfront.” This is met with silence, now even more deafening without the symphony of the greater world.
“Ah, I wish you were more open with me sometimes. Well, I’m not going to press you, I’ll be leaving now. But please don’t open the window; you’ll let all the bugs in. Oh, and turn on the light. I don’t trust that you won’t go insane in the dark.” the father replies, promptly flicking on the switch that instantaneously covers the room in artificial radiation.
To this, Matt grumbles yet again. Was there really anything better to do? The answer seems obvious to him, and as such he chooses to prepare for the next day: after brushing his teeth, taking a shower and dressing into his pyjamas, he looks for a moment at the lightbulb illuminating the room, and flicks the switch back to where it should be and snuck under the covers.
His thoughts start to amass instantly: individually each representing a facet of his outlook, together clashing into a storm of emotions. These emotions then mix into a seemingly homogeneous cacophony of surreal visions that in turn form his dreams. From this spiral he can observe his father trying to help and ensure a good future for his son, yet failing to offer any substantial advice, his friends from school blissfully unaware of what he actually thinks of them, the fading memory of the brief calmness felt just moments before, all smashing into each other, creating a constant series of hallucinations through which he sleeps through every night.
He bears this onslaught for six and a half hours before he is abruptly snapped out of his trance by the harsh beeps of his phone alarm: the clouds outside weep tears after their sudden meltdown the previous midnight, the device telling that their sobbing will not rest until well after noon. After rubbing his eyes of leftover sand, he glances at the clock on his nightstand that kindly shows him it is currently half past six, and knowing his bus to school leaves just past seven, he reluctantly, yet hastily goes to the kitchen to prepare himself sustenance for the day ahead, knowing that if he tries to balance his chaotic thoughts now, he would miss his bus and be subjected to the reprimanding of his teachers. After consuming his breakfast, he quickly brushes his teeth like the night before, throws on a t-shirt with casual jeans and a waterproof coat and grabs his bag before leaving through the front door and poising himself to run.
The gentle noise of droplets and giggles of children from the nearby preschool surround him in his mad dash to the bus stop before the departure of his target vehicle, one of the neighbours speaking to himself, “We didn’t raise an entire generation to be this bad at managing their time…”. Eventually, the specially coloured red lane shows itself before his eyes, occupied by a boarding electric bus. In a panic, he starts dashing straight towards the doors before they shut, managing to secure his place inside just in time.
Exhausted from this brief intense workout and breathing rapidly, he sits down next to the window so he can even briefly remind himself of what calms him the most. Even shrouded in clouds raining heavily from above, he still found the world outside incredibly captivating: the collected molecules of water sliding down the window, the delicate sound of them tapping against the glass of the vehicle like popcorn popping in the microwave, the sudden vibrantness of the leaves and bushes when everything else seems downtoned and melancholy, all only interrupted by the loud engine noises, the constant accelerating and braking of the bus, and especially the obnoxiously loud conversations led by the others on board.
Unable to relax in such a chaotic environment, he instead opts to glance at the display above everyone’s heads reading “Line 208 to Lower City”. This is when he realises that he, in fact, got on the earlier bus that turns off around halfway through his route to school. At that moment, fatefully, the bus makes this deviation from his usual route and approaches its next stop. Frantically, he jumps up from his seat and darts out of the doors heading towards his usual bus to find it driving past his eyes. Futile was his continued attempt to catch up: the vehicle speeds off, leaving him stranded in the cold rain.
Chapter 2
Drenched in the downpour and almost thirty minutes late for class, he makes his way towards his first lesson: maths. Upon opening the door, the gaze of the other students previously focused on their assigned problems turn towards him, some out of curiosity, some staring judgmentally, and others with visible pity in their eyes from seeing him soaked to the brim. This last sympathetic perspective was not shared by professor Hittings, who raises his head from the computer screen perched on the teacher’s desk. His thick glasses amplify the size of his threateningly grey irises, distracting from his thick, bushy heap of hair sitting loosely beneath his nose. Rising up from his seat, his less than great height becomes apparent, so he stands up as straight as possible, his comically small yet fitting beige suit riding up enough to reveal his leather belt.
“Ah, Harlington, may you kindly let us know why you arrived so late?” he says while Matt sits down in his seat. His reply is unsure and shaky:
“My b-bus was late, sir.”.
“Well, you should’ve gotten an earlier one, then I wouldn’t have to write a note to your parents that you slipped up again with your diligence, Harlington.” he sneers, unaware of the actual situation.
“S-sir, I did!” was Matt’s desperate rebuttal, fueled by annoyance by the teacher’s blunt remark.
“Sure you did.” the professor replies. “Now, coming back on track, has anyone started doing anything past exercise 7?”
A few lone hands raise while everyone else continues with their work, struggling with a few of the harder equations required.
“Well, that’s disappointing. You should all be at least halfway through exercise 8. At least, if you give a damn about passing this class.”
“Uh, excuse me, sir, I don’t really understand the difference between set unions and intersections…” says Lucy, one of the many students struggling with the newly introduced topic.
“Excuse me, what?” is Hitting’s harsh remark. “Do I really have to repeat every single thing I say to you? If you want to know the difference, look at your book on page 233!”
“This isn’t exactly as easy as you think it is, sir.” interjects Lucas, someone known in class for his often blunt comments.
“It isn’t?” the professor asks, surprised by his boldness. “It’s just basic set theory. A literal baby could solve these quicker than you lazy slackers!” he cruelly insults, causing everyone to momentarily pause and look up at what the man has to say. “Don’t you all understand that at this measly pace you’re all learning, you’ll all fail and soon be known as the high school’s only twenty year olds? I know most of you detest maths or having to do any action even remotely associated with using your brains, but the less you all care, the more time you’ll have to spend with me. And I don’t get paid for you people staying behind a year, so I suggest you finally get to work!” The professor then turns towards Matt, seemingly becoming even more agitated, his face turning red. “And what makes you think you’re exempt from my class, Harlington? Just because you’re late doesn’t mean you can sit and do nothing!”
But he does not answer. Instead, he stares forward blankly, clearly lost in thought and immersed in the world of his imagination. To him, it is as if professor Hittings, his school and his classmates don’t exist, replaced by the calming vision of a vibrant summer meadow, the sky rich in its blueness and without a cloud to obstruct its vastness. The grass sways to the pleasant breeze as a rabbit hops through the natural carpet it creates, shielded from the gaze of potential predators. A tranquil stream cuts through the rich flora, housing nests for the resident mallards, who in turn help populate the meadow with their verbalisations. Rainbow smelts swim past the ducks, braving the current of the water they find themselves in.
Yet suddenly, the sky goes dark and clouds as grey as Hittings’s eyes expel the sunshine, the vibrancy of the grass kicking down a notch, however not enough to not still be mesmerising for him. More worryingly, the wildlife start reacting to the unexpected change in weather, with even the water-loving ducks trying to hide in the tall grass. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a flash of lightning violently hits the ground and lights the peaceful meadow’s green coating ablaze, coincidentally when Matt feels the professor’s gaze on him. The image of the flaming field before him abruptly switches back to the cold, dreary and dated classroom. He looks up to see professor Hittings, who then suddenly grabs his arm and commands:
“Harlington! Stop your godforsaken daydreaming! Have you even heard a single word of what I said?”
“Y-y-yes, sir!” Matt quickly spits out, his body jerking from the sudden re-entry into reality.
“Well, could you tell me what I just said moments ago?”
“Uh, to stop daydreaming?”
“Before that, Harlington!” the professor sharply raises his voice.
“U-uh… something about sets?”
“No, Harlington, I told you to stop being such a lazy piece of shit!” he snarls at Matt, eliciting several gasps from his classmates. They knew the disgruntled professor had an often harsh demeanour towards his students, but this was on a level of anger and hatefulness that was surprising even for Hittings, famously the angriest teacher in school. “Do any of you ever listen to what I tell you?!” he blasted out, his tone of voice more unhinged than ever before.
At that moment, however, he is interrupted by the loud ringing of the bell signalling the end of the tortuous session of intense thinking. The students suddenly stop their work and begin packing their thick, bloated books filled with thousands of problems and the notebooks packed full with scripts of Arabic numerals and various mathematical signs. “Oh, damn it.” the professor quietly mumbles to himself, before clearing his throat and informing the class: “Don’t you think your work is over: I want to see pages 236 and 237 done in full by tomorrow! And I will check every single one of you, so don’t forget! And that includes you too, Harlington!” he shouts out to everyone.

I've been lurking on these threads on and off for about 18 months. It's probably about time I got some things off my own chest.
I've just finished reading a thread called "ADHD child is ruining my life" and I'm ashamed and conflicted to admit I intermittently have all the same strong and negative feelings about my 5yo daughter's ADHD. I don't negatively judge any of these harsh statements made by parents at the end of their rope. Having these reoccurring negative thoughts about my own child is soul destroying.
ADHD has sucked so much of the joy out of parenting, anger and frustration are never far away.
In some ways my child is absolutely amazing, she is smart, creative and beautiful but these problem behaviours negate all that good stuff so much of the time.
I'm angry with her father, who is absent by his own choice. ADHD does not run in my family, it's not something I've ever had to deal with before and have little experience with.
Me & her father were in a long distance relationship for 18 months when I caught pregnant. We moved in together not long before she was born and our relationship soon turned sour when in due course it became apparent to me that he had ASD/ADHD that he had successfully masked and hidden from me, until his mask began to slip.
Two or so years we tried making it work, but over time his ADHD/ASD behaviours became more apparent and I fast realised it was not something I could live with at home. His lack of executive function made me feel like the only adult in the house. He was unreliable, terrible at communicating, had his priorities all wrong, he needed guidance and direction all time and whole bunch of stuff that I just simply didn't have the patience for. After much turmoil we split when she was 18 months old, he left and didn't look back, despite me making it clear co-parenting was my wish.
Since my daughter turned 3 I had my suspicions she had ADHD. The energy levels were off the charts, and it was doubly hard for me as I was diagnosed with a disability in that time and I had take on so much all alone.
Since then I have a new partner who is fantastic with my daughter and is an excellent father figure to her.
She's 5 now and ADHD suspicions have been confirmed, not via a diagnosis just yet, but the behaviours are there to be seen by myself, my friends, family and neighbours who all agree it's ADHD.
Prominent problem behaviours include constant noises, high volume, lack of attentiveness and concentration, fidgeting, disproportionate emotional meltdowns, lack of social grace, sensory issues, constant debates and arguing, and down right self centeredness.
I ought to be grateful because I know as far as the sliding scale goes, things could be a lot worse... I ought to be grateful she's the smart kind who is well behaved at school - and not the seriously troubled kind. However, it doesn't stop ADHD sucking so much of the joy from what I envisioned our relationship to be like.
It's almost impossible enjoy regular stuff with her. I sit down to read her a book and she will talk over me, pull at pages or randomly start poking me in the face. I sit down to watch a movie with her and she will talk over the movie the whole time or randomly get up and start doing something else. Take her out for a walk to the beach and she will immediately moan her legs hurt and drag her feet the whole way, despite being less than a 10 minute walk. On the way back she will inevitably be whining, moaning, and need to be carried back. When we get back home she will proceed to "bounce of the walls" for the rest of day, her previous "tiredness" vanishing.
I sit down to hug her and she will shrug me off and tell me she doesn't want to be touched. Of I sit down to do art/crafts with her she has to tell me what to do and tell me what colours I have to use. She loves to boss people about. She will ignore instructions no matter how many times you repeat them them, and just like her father will always say "I forgot, I forgot, I forgot", how can she forget something that was just discussed less than 20 seconds ago?!
Simple tasks and activities are always made difficult. It's so disheartening to know that even when I'm trying my best, my best is never good enough. I could also be visibly upset and crying (which happens infrequently) and rather than come over to me and say "mommy what's wrong, do you need a hug" it will be "look at me, look what I can do, can I have this, I want that, me, me, me, me, me"
How can somebody be so self centered and oblivious?!
I know she inherited this from her father. I feel like my autonomy and informed choice was stolen from me. I feel like adults with ASD/ADHD should be forced by law to declare their issues to potential partners before their partner unwittingly recreate little versions of them. I could leave her father, but I can't leave my own child, most especially when her father is such a blatant, self centered deadbeat.
I love her to bits, but I've been trapped into special needs hell when I never would have chosen this life for myself. My partner is sitting besides me right now, we both struggle with her behaviours, he would back up everything I've said. I feel awful because I know none of this is her fault, I made her, I grew her, how could I ever blame her?
But much like the person who created the thread I referenced, I worry about the resentment I feel. I'm pregnant with baby #2 right now, and I pray to god this second child is NT (no reason he/her wouldn't be) and I might actually get to enjoy parenting. How awful is all of this.

I’ll be straight, I’m a total hopeless romantic and I want it all with my soulmate - our own home, a long-term monogamous relationship and kids one day, hopefully a few dogs and a turtle too haha. I got out of a relationship ~6 months ago, and I've decided I want to look for my soulmate again. I miss the feeling of waking up and immediately sending a good morning text, and sending & receiving random memes and texts throughout the day. I want to look at my phone and feel my heart race and a smile emerge across my face just because I've seen a message from you. I am well aware of the likelihood (or I should say unlikelihood) of my future soulmate living within a few miles; I do not want to restrict myself so I'm very happy to accept messages from all over the world! As long as we can see each other on a somewhat regular basis (every few months at the very least) and we both have compatible future life plans, an LDR is absolutely okay with me.
About me:
I'd consider myself to be an endearing and nurturing person, and I just love to see the people around me, and hopefully you, happy. I love to make people smile and laugh, and this is something I want our relationship to be full of. I'm an avid, and shameless, appreciator of dad jokes and darker comedy, so I really hope you also like this. My love languages are definitely physical affection, quality time and words of affirmation, with the affection being the most important to me. I'm quite nerdy, I am a STEM student (studying biology and hoping to progress into molecular genetics in postgrad, and hoping to complete a PhD some day) and I love the humanities, with a specific focus on history, psychology and philosophy. I have an insatiable curiosity for the world around us, and love to read and watch lectures & documentaries to better understand it. I could chew your ear off for hours talking about ancient history, the Enlightenment and why Raphael is the best Renaissance artist, and ninja mutant turtle :). I love to travel, which is definitely fueled by my love of history, and I've been to ~15 countries so far, and hoping to see Iceland, Rome, Egypt and Jordan this year too. My ideal relationship would have us travelling often together and creating a little scrapbook for us to annoy our neighbours, friends and family with haha. I love to try, emphasis on 'try', and touch my creative side every now and again - I play guitar and am in the process of writing an album (though procrastination is bettering me in this department), I like to paint with acrylics and oils, and I enjoy going to the theatre occasionally. I'm also trying to get more into movies, so please feel free to recommend any 'hidden gems' out there! I've never been to a festival, but it’s been on my bucket list for a very long time; hopefully we could go together?
I absolutely love travelling and I just want to explore everything the world has to offer; I’m even going to Iceland, Italy, Morocco and hopefully Egypt this year. I have literally a million trips planned (US/Canada roadtrip, Jordan & Egypt, Scandinavia, etc), I just want to share those experiences with someone important to me. I also love everything outdoorsy including hiking, swimming, kayaking (I did this for the first time last summer and I instantly fell in love), climbing, etc and enjoy most sports though I am terrible at all of them haha.
I also love music and painting, and I will likely play guitar whilst we are chatting. I’m looking for someone who also shares an insatiable curiosity for the world around us, and wants to explore it and experience everything it has to offer us. For a few years now, I’ve wanted to take a year or two out just travelling the world and seeing/experiencing as much of it as I can, and I have already planned the route for this. I'd like for you to be family oriented; I've spent over half my life looking after children (I have 4 niblings, and they're exhausting haha, but I love them) and one of the many things I've learned is that I 100% want kids myself. I've spent an almost embarrassing amount of time (probably over a month in real time) daydreaming about my ideal future - our own home, that we've possibly built ourselves, filled with love and happiness. I want our kids to always feel safe and comfortable there, I want our home to be the centre of the community where all our friends and neighbours can come to if they need somewhere to stay or just want a chat. I want us to spend our entire lives together, through all the good and bad, but it'll all be okay because no matter what, it'll still be us falling asleep together with you in my arms. I want to wake up everyday with my first sight being your smile, for the rest of my life. I want to build this beautiful life with someone that also shares this dream.
I wouldn’t say appearance is important to me as I am looking for love and I don’t care what shape nor size that love comes in. I only want someone that has a complimentary personality to my own, and will tolerate my nerdiness haha. I don’t have any preference for location, age, weight, skin & hair colour, etc, though I listened to Van Morrison a lot as a kid, so you’re instantly at the front of the queue if you have brown eyes (I love the idea of my very own 'brown-eyed girl'). Also contradictory to this paragraph haha, tattoos and dyed hair (really anything considered slightly ‘alt), absolutely makes me weak at the knees. Also, I am a complete bum-man, where a simple flash of the skirt or a seductive sway whilst walking is enough to make me ravenous; I just thought that was useful to know.
I feel I should mention some potential dealbreakers as these have been important to others in the past - I am bisexual and have dated both men & women in the past; however, I am only looking for a woman right now. Also, I am strictly monogamous, and this is extremely unlikely to ever change, so please do not reply if you would like an open relationship or something similar in the future. Lastly, I don't think I'd like to live in the UK for the rest of my life, so hopefully you'd be happy to move to a country in Europe (maybe Germany, Scandinavia or Belgium) or the Anglosphere (I'd love to live in Australia or NZ at some point in my life - they both look just breathtaking).

The Lord-Commander's death was a bit shocking, not because I had cared about him much, but because of just how fast the Peafowl in front of me had dispatched him. The guard, however, seemed outraged, although they wisely chose to remain in position and behind their barricades.
“Death has been marked. Burn this pitiful city to the ground, kill two thirds and enslave the rest: we shall take what is ours and make an example out of you cretins.” The Peafowl seemed to be speaking to both her own soldiers as well as us at the same time, a disgusted look plastered on her face as if we were a mound of insects she had just discovered after overturning a rock. Then she focused her beady little eyes on me. “Save for you, whatever you are: I'm sure the Shogun would be interested in your physiology.”
Shogun… that was a familiar title, a human title. A memory scraped at the back of my mind: one of a procession in an opulent palace nestled on an island paradise built within an oceanic garden world. A thousand princes in white and black robes bowed to a single young man wearing flowing robes woven from monomolecular silver strands, his hair tied into a chonmage topknot. Non-human servants poured tea for the many guests of honor, including his Neko-ka no dōbutsu courtiers and concubines, simply known as Neko-ka by those who handcrafted them, their slim feline bodies reminiscent of tigers, but their fur being comprised of all shades of blue, purple, and black and speckled with white and orange to resemble a brilliant night sky. Anyone who knew their true power dared not to challenge them, however, for their minds were sharper than swords.
In an instant, the young man rose, donning a beautiful benkan handed to him by one of his concubines. As he rose, the crowd kowtowed to him, his title clear as they shouted in unison: Banzai, eikō aru Shōgun! Anata ga eien ni kunrin shimasu yō ni! For some reason, it was like a second language to me, Japanese, and so my brain didn't need to translate it. But I knew that they had just crowned the last Shogun to ever reign, right before the age of man ended in fire. It was a title revered throughout the ages, one respected and feared throughout a thousand worlds.
The memory dissipated, and I snapped back to reality. “What makes you say that?” I asked, leveling the blade of the fauchard at her and taking a defensive stance with my feet spread apart, right foot forward, posture square, and knees bent. I had remembered training that wasn't mine, but was still ingrained in my head. Keep the blade of your polearm up like the mast of a ship, ready to bite the neck of your foe, a slashed jugular can end a battle before it begins. I could hear a voice in my head recounting the actions to me, and with its words came my body’s actions as it seemed to adjust on its own.
“Because you hold your weapon as if you've wielded it all your life,” she observed as she dropped the blade of her kusarigama below the cover of her wing, revealing the wickedly sharp, crescent moon blade mounted on a silver mount connected to a thinly woven metal cord. I couldn't see the other end, but there was no doubt that it was equally dangerous. “Yet I know you haven't: that Polearm was held by another before you, one that I humbled in battle myself. You are someone worth… acquiring.” She spoke the last sentence in an almost alluring way, as if she was trying to seduce me, but all it succeeded in doing was making me feel filthy both inside and out.
“I have no interest in joining a band of killers and plunderers,” I snapped back, “and nothing you say will change that. Now leave, before I'm forced to kill you.”
She laughed at that, which sounded almost like a peacock’s call rather than the normal laughs I had associated with humans. “An idealist? How quaint! You must be new around here, so let me explain how this world works,” she said, her voice dripping with mirth, “The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must. If they cannot stop us by force, they must either appease us or suffer the consequences. There can be no alternative.”
I narrowed my eyes at her, causing her to laugh harder. “Your innocence is adorable yet disappointing, but my master can rectify that: someone as skilled as you shouldn't be held down by foolish notions such as justice and morality. I can offer you a place amongst us, to live at the top of the world! My master has aspirations that go far beyond these pitiful, impoverished nobodies.”
“You know nothing about me,” I hissed, “so stop acting like you do.”
“I know you can wield the Polearm,” she said, “that in of itself is an achievement: I attempted to wield it when I defeated its previous owner, and it nearly drove me insane. The fact that you are capable of wielding it with no issue shows that you're special and worthy of induction into our ranks.”
“I have no interest in joining you,” I repeated, “now either fight or leave: I have a city to save.”
She glared at me for a moment, the look in her eyes almost… pained. “Such wasted potential, but if you wish to die a dog then so be it.” She then began dexterously whirling both ends of her kusarigama elegantly at opposite intervals, so quickly that they became a blur of steel and silver. Her feathers bloomed and sparkled in the artificial light, and I finally realized how she was able to deflect the Lord-Commander’s gunfire: her feathers, all of them, were made of some kind of exotic black metal, seemingly weightless but also near impenetrable. She extended her tail plume outward, something that only male peafowl were said to possess, and a semicircular display of black feathers etched with intricate silver and gold inlays like a work of priceless art. “I will spare you no pain, my usual capacity for mercy has long since been overdrawn. Be prepared to die a long and painful death, ronin.”
Faster than I could perceive, she unleashed one blade of her kusarigama out with a precise stroke, but I was able to dodge to the side fast enough to where it only cut horizontally through the cartilage of my nose, leaving a horrible gash below my eyes. I grabbed the metallic rope left hand, the speed and friction causing my palm and inner fingers to blister and smoke for just a second, but I quickly yanked her towards me with a gutteral shout. She was heavier than she looked, but that wouldn't stop me.
She seemed to laugh at my struggle against her, although it wasn't out of mocking but rather in delight of my skill and speedy reaction. “Finally, a challenge! even the last wielder of that weapon was nowhere near your level!”
I growled and yanked again with all my might, this time sending her flying towards me, but she simply extended her wings like a parasol and launched the other end of her kusarigama at me. It moved backwards and it impaled itself into the ground, splitting brick like styrofoam. Then she landed in front of me faster than I thought possible before extending the tips of her wings, each much sharper than a razor blade, and slashing at my chest. I was able to dodge just in time for the attacks to not be lethal, but she left two horrible lacerations across my chest that began to bleed profusely. I stumbled backwards, leveling my Polearm towards her as once more she stood there in a crouched position, my crimson blood dripping from her wingtips.
“Where is your bravado now, boy?” She hissed at me, a grin on her beak, “where is that confidence from before?”
I spat in the ground and returned to my original stance. “I'm going to shatter that snarky beak of yours,” I growled.
“I'd like to see you try,” she said before retrieving both ends of the kusarigama effortlessly and leaping back to put space between the both of us. It was then when I realized just how she was able to manipulate the weapon so effectively: the length of the cord that connected both crescent blades seemed to elongate and contract at will, extending to reach far off targets with a mere flick of the wrist and returning from even the slightest tug. Such a weapon must have taken incredible skill and discipline to use, but she manipulated it like a master violinist, eliciting a beautiful agony from each manipulation of the strings.
My left hand ached, and during a short lull in our battle I noticed that everything around us was in chaos: the marauders, many of them Sho-dai themselves, began gunning down the townsfolk indiscriminately. They looted the bodies first, stuffing their pockets with whatever valuables they could find, and the guard was quickly surrounded and pinned down from gunfire. More marauders emerged from the bronze gate, ready to loot and pillage. Houses were burning, innocents were attempting to flee, and the air was filled with the acrid scent of smoke.
Grug was holding his own the massive baboon, but he seemed hesitant to actually fight back. He blocked most of the incoming attacks from the kanabo with relative ease, but he didn't actually attack. Tree-friend, on the other hand, was all offense: he scurried up and down Grug’s body like a frantic ant, leaping off his shoulders at opportune times and inflicting horrible cuts on the baboon’s face and body. One of the giant primate’s eyes had been gouged out and his chest was an unrecognizable waterfall of scarlet. He roared and swung his kanabo at Grug, who blocked it with his forearm with a grunt before finally striking back at the ape with a solid punch to the chin, sending him wobbling back and howling with anger.
The one outlier was the beetle warrior: he swung his nodachi in wide arcs furiously, cleaving even armored Sho-dai warriors in two with ease. He was much slower than the Peafowl I had been fighting, but he made up for it in sheer durability and raw strength. Bullets and melee weapons alike bounced off his carapace, not even leaving scratches or dents, so I knew it would take a higher caliber of weapon to finish him off, but it was a good thing I possessed just that.
“You don't have the privilege of losing focus,” shouted the Peafowl as she practically gilded towards me, wings extended for the kill, “your focus will be on me, fool.” I blocked both of her first two wing strikes with the pole of the fauchard, sending a spray of sparks into the air. She kept up the pressure, slashing her wings and occasionally attempting to strike me with her crescent kusarigama blades or wrap its cord around my neck and strangle me with it. I was able to dodge or avoid every attack so far, but she'd get me again eventually and I had a feeling the next time I was struck it would be far more deadly than the last.
“Nothing else to say, fool? Have you realized the depth of your mistake? Maybe if you beg at my talons I'll spare you, make you my varlet!” She cackled with sadistic glee, “I'm sure it would be better than simply being another corpse amongst the graveyard that this pathetic city will become!”
I was getting sick of her taunting and her heartlessness. With an enraged shout, I performed a feinted downward slash before striking her skull with the flat of the fauchard’s blade, stunning her momentarily. Then I jammed the blade into her throat, and while her metallic feathers were able to deflect the shape blade, being struck in the wind pipe wasn't exactly a great feeling. She backpedaled, coughing and choking, her kusarigama blades hanging limp at her sides.
“You talk too damn much,” I spoke stoically, “Next time I'll use this fauchard to peel you out of your metal feathers and skin like a can opener, then we'll see how confident you are.”
She hacked up blood for a moment and glared at me with pure malice in her eyes. “Don't speak of any torment, you pathetic worm, I am far more brutal than you can possibly imagine.”
“Then show me,” I shouted, “Show me before I strangle you with your own weapon!”
She screamed in rage as the fires burned ferociously around us, the town slowly being consumed by the inferno. The guard was in shambles, the marauders were overtaking what was left of them, and Thiva was nowhere to be found: I had to end this soon, if not for my sake then for her own. But before I could make a move, a blade of the Peafowl’s kusarigama raced towards me like a bolt of lightning, and I barely blocked it with the flat of my blade, one hand on the pole and another pressed against the opposite flat to maintain balance. The force was so immense that I was pushed back against a light pole with a crash, and I ducked just in time for the other edge to cleave through the pole like butter, sending the top half crashing down in front of me, the lamp exploding into sparks.
The Peafowl stomped towards me through the smoke, seemingly unfazed by how thick it was. I stood up, coughing and wheezing as the impact against my chest had cracked my sternum. Pain flooded through my chest, and I began coughing up blood as well. “I'm going to debone you alive like a fish,” she hissed at me, her eyes practically glowing with hatred, “and I'm going to sever both your Achilles tendons and cut off all your fingers so you can't drag yourself away while I do it! You'll be nothing left but a sack of flesh!”
She recoiled her weapon’s cord, sending the blades racing back to her before she twirled and swung one crescent blade after another at me one at a time. I was able to dodge them, but they shredded up my surroundings wherever they struck like tin foil, sending stone shrapnel flying. I attempted to close the distance between us on multiple occasions, but every time I got close she fanned out her wings and used them to push me back. My forearms were a mess of cuts from all my attempts, but I didn't give up.
Then, gunfire. Close gunfire. The Peafowl's back erupted into sparks as someone shot at her. Both our heads spun simultaneously to spot her assailant, which just so happened to be Thiva: she had picked up and reloaded the Lord-Commander's submachine gun and unloaded a clip into the Peafowl’s back, which was armored enough to deflect the low caliber gunfire.
“You pitiful swine! I'll gut you for this!” Shouted the Peafowl, and before I could react she swung her crescent kusarigama blades in an arc, both of them impaling Thiva in the side and sending her flying into a building with a pained scream.
At that moment, everything went red again. My body seemed to groan in protest, but my mind was ready to go. It seemed that, in that moment, all restrictions on my very being had been lifted, and I could fight at my full potential, risks be damned. Time seemed to slow to a quarter or even an eighth of its normal speed around me, and I rushed towards the Peafowl with a guttural scream, my fauchard seemingly screaming with me as we operated as one. An eruption of pure vitriol poured forth from the cursed weapon, washing over both friend and foe alike as if it was a tsunami of ice-cold water, forcing any and all confrontation around me to a standstill instantaneously.
Many of the marauders snapped, the power of the fauchard overwhelming their minds. Some collapsed into a fetal position, rocking back and forth and whimpering like newborns. Others simply took their own lives, placing the barrels of their guns in their mouths or under their chins and pulling the trigger. Even more dropped their weapons and frantically begged for mercy, their eyes wide with terror and desperation. Very few were able to resist the effects, and even those that did looked absolutely harrowed, as if they had woken up from a heinous nightmare like no other.
On the townsfolk and the guard, however, the weapon seemed to have a completely different effect: In a singular moment, all fear was stripped away, replaced with nothing but hate. Fueled by rage born from years and years of abuse and oppression, the townsfolk formed a mob that washed over the remaining Marauders like a tidal wave of pure, unadulterated violence, beating them to death with whatever they had on hand, from tools to rocks. Some of the Marauders screamed for mercy, but that only seemed to make the Sho-dai angrier. How many had begged these very same Marauders for mercy as their livelihoods were pilfered and their loved ones hauled away like cattle? What made it even worse was that many of these same Marauders had once been Sho-dai who had lived amongst these very same townsfolk, maybe even calling them friends or family.
I slammed my Fauchard into her with enough force to shred through her metallic feathers and pierce her entire body, the other end of the fauchard sticking out of her back. She vomited up a mix of blood and bile as her stomach was destroyed, and right when I pulled the blade out I kicked the side of her head with my heel, sending her flying backwards. She dropped her kusarigama onto the ground as the skidded and tumbled along, shedding sparks as her metallic feathers scraped against the brick road, and I quickly snatched it up in one hand, the blades retracting into a thick cord only about two meters in length instead of the many dozen I had seen it extend too when she had been wielding it.
“Where is your bravado now? Where is that confidence from before?” I echoed her words back to her as I marched towards her, her guts beginning to spill out of the deep wound in her abdomen.
“You- you can't do this!” She croaked, rancid blood still pouring from her mouth. I could taste my own blood in my mouth and smell it in my sinuses from the deep gash on the bridge of my nose, but that didn't deter me at all. “You weren't supposed to win! This wasn't how it was supposed to end! Argus never predicted this!” She seemed just as confused as she was terrified.
“Having second thoughts?” I hissed as I approached her. She tried to drag herself away with her winged arms, her lower body paralyzed from her shattered spine and her intestines trailing behind her. I quickly gripped her by the neck and lifted her up, her dainty legs dangling freely, “What happened to the weak suffering what they must? Are you not willing to suffer?” I slammed her head into the wall of a building, shattering her beak just as I said I would. She cried in pain as I tossed her into the ground once more and set the fauchard down next to me, the reviled weapon seeming to bask in the bloodshed: it loved this.
“Unfortunately for you, I keep my promises when I can,” I hissed, venom seeping into my voice. I wrapped the cord of her kusarigama around her neck and stepped on her shoulder blades before wrapping the cord around her neck a few more times and pulling with all my might. She tried to scream, but nothing would come out, and she failed her arms wildly as her eyes bulged. “I gave you a chance to leave, and you wasted it. Now I'm going to waste you.”
She kept trying to escape, to find some respite, but I denied her oxygen. My anger only blossomed more as she mouthed pleas of mercy to me, as if I'd ever spare her. I had put so much emphasis on sparing my enemies, but I was beginning to learn that some couldn't be spared. I had to send a message! I had to ensure that these people would never be hurt again!
Then, with boiling blood and an enraged scream, I yanked one last time, and her neck elongated a little more than what one would feel natural. I could hear the sickly cracks and pops as I stretched out her spinal cord beyond its limits. Then, she went limp, her eyes teary and bulging out of her head and her broken beak foaming. I dropped the kusarigama in disgust and picked up my fauchard, and with one final scream of rage, I lopped her head off and held it up by the black and gold plume on her head like medusas’s very own.
In an instant, the battle went silent. I glared at all the remaining marauders with nothing but malice, any humanity or mercy that was once left in my soul long gone now. “Your lives are forfeit! Now you may either flee into the desert, or face my wrath.”
Everyone paused, including the townsfolk and the remaining guard. My fauchard radiated authority, extending my will beyond just my being but into the minds of those around me, making my commands absolute. There would be no compromise, no question, only obedience or death.
Then, the marauders who were still alive and of sound mind began to flee, running through the bronze gates and into the hungry black night, sure to be devoured by the ruthless creatures of the desert. All that remained was the scarab warrior, surrounded by the corpses of many guards and his blade and carapace soaked in their blood. He seemed nervous, terrified even, but he held his blade up, ready to defend himself.
The creature fighting Grug and Tree-friend hadn't fared much better, either. Tree-friend continued to serve as Grug's most potent weapon by using Grug's body as a platform to launch himself off of and land on their shared enemy. Tree-friend would then distract and attack the massive primate by scurrying up and down its body and slowly ripping it to shreds. I also noticed that Tree-Friend’s targets weren't chosen at random either: he was slashing at arteries, cutting tendons and ligaments, and digging his claws into muscles vital for combat to reduce their enemy's effectiveness. At this point, the simian could barely hold his club up to swing at Grug, who easily caught it and yanked it out of its hands before kicking him back. The simian fell to the ground, exhausted and spent, unable to lift himself back up as Grug towered over him. Then Grug sat on his chest with an oomph, immobilizing him in the most comedic way possible.
I turned back to the beetle. “Leave, now,” I hissed at him. He paused, but then made the foolish mistake of charging at me. I blocked his first strike with the pole of my fauchard before swiping the sword to the side and exposing the elbow joint of his good arm. I then sliced it off quickly, the blade clattering to the ground. He hissed and screamed, backing up, but I sliced off the rest of his arm at the shoulder and then lopped off his horn with another wide slash, rendering him defenseless.
I tossed the Peafowl’s head in front of him, and he stared down at it in disbelief, as if he had never thought she could be killed in battle. “Present her head to whatever Shogun you serve, and send him this warning: I am the protector of this city now, and I will kill anyone who attempts to threaten, extort, or bring harm to these people for as long as I live.”
The beetle stared at me for a moment before picking up her head and backing away. Then, when he got far enough away, he turned around and ran for the gates as well, deep into the night.
In an instant, my incredible strength and unending stamina disappeared. I felt like collapsing, but I managed to stay awake for long enough to limp over to where Thiva had been tossed. She was buried in a shallow crater of rubble, her side bleeding profusely. I fell to my knees next to her and removed my shirt, wrapping it around her abdomen and putting pressure on her wound to staunch the bleeding before cradling her in my arms.
“S-saturn… did we win?” She asked weakly, her eyes half-lidded.
“Yeah, we did, and you're going to be okay.”
“I… I am? I can't feel my side, and everything is fuzzy and spinning.”
“Blood loss…” I whispered, “I'm going to get you to a doctor, and then we'll get you some rest. It's about time I start taking care of you for once.”
“You're really sexy when you take control,” she said with a goofy, faint giggle, “I just want you to hold me.”
I blushed profusely at her comment, but quickly regained my composure. “You need a doctor,” I informed her, my voice much more authoritative than before, “and the first thing I'm going to do is get you to one.”
She giggled again, giving me a seductive look that was clearly influenced by the lack of blood rushing to her head. “No… y-you’re gonna kiss me,” she said, “ because if there's one thing I want to do before I die is kiss you.”
I sighed, but she gently wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled herself up to my face, paving her lips against mine. I didn't stop her, instead pulling her closer and participating in the kiss, tasting her lips. Then, as quickly as it began, it ended. Some of my blood was on her lips, and the burning town wasn't exactly the most romantic of venues, but I had to admit that my first real kiss felt incredible. “Are you happy now? Will you let me take you to a doctor?”
“I… I don't know, you should do it again just in case,” she said, an idiotic smile spreading across her face. Then, she winced and placed a hand on her side, but I pushed it away and lifted her up, her legs around my waist and my arms holding her up by her legs as she held onto my neck tightly. “You need a doctor, then you can kiss me as much as you want once you're stable.”
“Okay…” she mumbled disappointedly. I hefted her up gently to regain my grip and carried her out of the ruined building and into the street. Outside, what was left of the guard was doing what they could to put out the fires, care for the wounded, and round up the mentally and physically detained marauders, probably for execution or something worse. A few female Sho-dai who were dressed in what looked to be humble priestess garbs were giving last rights to the fallen guards, waving incense sticks and whispering prayers. One turned to me, seeing me hold Thiva, and immediately bowed before speaking in a language that I hadn't heard before, her voice trembling with immense emotion as tears fell from her eyes, tears of hope. “Aǔzōng wai kuōw jûo tiān wǔzhě”
Then, as the entire crowd heeded the priestess’ words, they immediately prostrated themselves before me, kneeling to the ground and practically burying their faces into the brick road in an act of veneration and humility as if I was some kind of god. They all repeated the same phrase as before, but this time I was able to understand it: ancestors-sent warrior of the heavens. They thought I was some kind of protector spirit sent by their ancestors. Many of them were weeping, or began praying to the sky immediately after bowing to me, as if thanking their ancestors above. “Zhō yīn nǐ de qin ér méng qūo,” was repeated by those who looked up to the sky, “We are blessed by your graciousness.”
I was not mentally, physically, or emotionally prepared to deal with this religious nonsense right now. “I need to get this woman a doctor, then we can talk about… whatever you all think I am. But right now this woman is my betrothed, and if she dies I'm going to be incredibly unhappy!”
Immediately, half a dozen of the present priestesses hurried over and lifted Thiva out of my arms, carrying her away. I longed for her touch, and to be able to know she was safe in my arms, but I wasn't a doctor and I needed her to be healthy first and foremost. Once they had started to carry her away, I sat on the ground, exhausted. “I just… I just need a minute,” I said, “I just…”
Before I could say anything else, I fell backwards, eyes wide as I observed the black night above. I just wanted to go to sleep, but my mind was worried about Thiva. I needed to know if she would be okay.
But my body betrayed me, and this time it overpowered my spent mind. My eyes grew heavy and I drifted off to sleep with an exhaust sigh, the cool air nursing my burning lungs.
Finally! The long-awaited battle between Saturn and the enforcers of the Cabal begins and ends in one chapter, because like other stories on this sub I'm not going to make a handful of people fighting stretch out over five chapters. Also, plenty of lore reveals in this chapter too! I wonder if you feel like translating the Japanese to see what it says? That is actual Japanese, after all.
Also, Saturn is terrifying when you kill his fiance. Yes, they are going to be a couple, because I think they're a cute pairing. And Grug and Tree-Friend are out first two new members of the gang! There will be two more to round it out to six, I wonder if you can guess who they'll be?
