It is by a female pop artist (IIRC) and was on the radio. Probably within the last 10-15 years. I was thinking Salina Gomez or Miley Cyrus, but a lyrics search didn’t find anything.
In the chorus she spells the word LOVE and repeats the first two letters a couple times: “L O L O L O V E”
I know there’s a song by the used called El Oh Vee Ee, but it isn’t that one.

[Group 1]

Avian test subjects show minor impact from long-term radiation exposure.   Noticeable physical features include -- minor balding and blistering throughout the body. Subjects are still able to fly with little issues and function as normal.

Long-term radiation exposure has effected the rodent species in various ways.   Test subjects have grown much larger than normal rat species. Test subjects also appear to more aggressive in nature and will start screeching and attacking their containment box by biting or scratching nearby surfaces if approached.   Noticeable physical features include -- test subjects have larger bodies, larger teeth, and pearl-like eyes. Additionally, higher doses of radiation exposure causes fur to fall off at an accelerated rate, and the skin to become more winkled and leather-like.

The lagomorpha subjects show no behavioral changes to long-term exposure.   Noticeable physical signs include -- slightly larger than regular rabbits. loss of fur in the chest, neck, front legs, and back of the legs. (These areas appear to show scarring and the appearance of boils or warts). Interestingly, small horn-like growths can be seen in each test subjects head.

Minimal exposure to radiation seems to not affect the canine species at all. Over time medium exposure to radiation causes test subjects to grow much larger in size and show more wolf-like features. Long-term exposure to radiation turns dogs into feral-like creatures that strongly resemble the characteristics found in wild wolves.   Noticeable physical features include -- Tougher and bigger bodies, sharper claws and teeth.

Today marks my official transition from a humble junior Vault-Tec employee to potential candidate to the role of Overseer. I am forever grateful to Vault-Tec for giving me this opportunity to demonstrate my leadership skills!   With that said, the job itself seems pretty easy. I don't have to actually manage any people in the vault (thank goodness for that), and it seems like most of the work has already been done for me. I just have to monitor the animal test subjects and document any visible changes. While normally any personal pets or wild animals are restricted from entering the vaults, testing the long-term effects of radiation on non-human species still makes for good science.

Okay so after getting a day to adjust to my new environment, I think I know where everything that I need to do is located. The vault is not actually that big compared to the ones I've seen on TV. The overseer's office does feel cramp though, but that might be due to the giant monitors used to observe the laboratories. And Dr. Kepler's "pets"...   It's a good thing that I'm only staying here for one month.

So the experiment being conducted in the vault is pretty interesting. It has five laboratories that are all self-regulating. The test subjects are provided with all the food and water they need, and all I have to do is to remember to restock the food every three days. It's all stored in this big storage room that is divided between the test subjects supplies and my supplies. And speaking of my supplies, they provided me with some pretty delicious foods and snacks! Not much for entertainment though, there are a lot of technical books and guides about various handy skills in case of nuclear fallout. Kinda stiff reading, but also understandable as this is meant to be a work assignment.   At least I'll have something to read to pass the time.

It's been a week so far and I can confidently say that I'm pretty much ready to be an overseer. The test subjects are doing good. Well.. some of them at least. There are some test subjects that seem to notice my presence and become aggressive, even if they don't physically see me. But the others are peaceful and don't make much noises.

This morning I woke up feeling pretty awful. I'm not sure if it was something I ate last night but just to be sure I'll probably stay away from anything that could further upset my stomach. I took some medicine that was in the emergency kit so I should be fine for now. Also, thanks to my predecessors work, I was able to finish writing my notes on test subjects 1-R167 and 3-B496. So congrats me! Now I just have to start on the others.

I wish Vault-Tec included more of those fancy lads among the list of available foods to eat during the training. I don't usually have much of sweet tooth, but those cakes are addictive. Specially when paired with some fresh coffee!   Side note, I started to name some of the creatures in the labs. I felt bad just calling them by their designated lab-numbers. I feel it makes it easier to remember and keep track of who is who. Plus, it got me occupied with doing something to do for a while after work.

Another day of feeling under the weather, just a little over a week to go before I'm done with the training. This time my voice has given out, becoming more raspy and hard to speak. I found a Stimpak in the Overseer's office, so hopefully that cures me of any illness I might have gotten. To be honest I think it's a fever or stomach flu. I noticed too late after eating them that some of the YumYum deviled eggs I had were in a damaged package. So I should probably be mindful of food safety from now on.   I'm just going to go read and sleep for the rest of day, and hopefully by tomorrow I'll be back to full health.

-- Audio File-- Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, I royally fucked up. I was having a late breakfast when the vault suddenly lost power and when the lights went off I accidentally broke one of Dr. Kepler's pet containers. I think it was one of his bug ones. FUCK. I don't even get why Vault-Tec allowed him to store his stuff here. WHO THE FUCK COLLECTS AND KEEPS COCKAROACHES!!!   By the time the lights came back on, there was glass scattered everywhere and some of the computers showed error messages. I swear I better not be blamed for this. GODDAMMIT I was almost done with all of this... What even happened upstairs? There was loud bang sound and then everything went to shit.

I have been working all day to try and get the terminals back online. That power out messed with a lot of the devices in the vault. Most of the lab equipment seems fine, but the cameras are no longer showing any video feed. For the time being I've decided to shutdown all test subject cameras to try and conserve some energy.   I was able to find a user manual in one of the boxes in the storage room that was all about terminals, but despite my best efforts I am unable to get things back to working order. Every time I try to send a message out to anyone at Vault-Tec hq, the terminals only show the message CONNECTION LOST.

After three non-stop days of dealing with all of the mess from that power out, my body is starting to show signs of stress. The lack of sunlight has definitely made me more dry and wrinkly. I recommend some skin lotion be placed for the next participant. At this point I don't really care if I'm no longer selected to be an overseer. This shit is too stressful to deal with.   Just four more days and then someone will come down to check up on me. I can't wait to go back to normal desk job after all of this is done.

Okay something is definitely wrong, I'm sure I should have received some message by now or something. That would probably explain the lack of contact these last two days.   When the power went out it must've damaged some areas of the vault much more than I originally thought. I am going to try and see if I can find something in here that can teach me about electrical engineering. If I can somehow re-route power to that section of the vault, then maybe I can open the door and leave. At this point I will probably start to run out of food without a resupply. So before it gets to that point, lets test out my new skills.

-- Audio File-- I was able to scrounge up some spare parts from the broken terminals in the vault and started diverting some power to the area where the vault door is located. I think I might be able to divert enough power from some the labs, but this might cause some issues with the equipment there. I feel bad temporally messing with the test subjects environments, but at this point I feel like I don't have much of choice.   Let's hope this works...   Yes! I got it working! I can't sleep. Can't stop thinking about them, pounding at my door.   I tried to go out when they were sleeping but had no luck. I accidentally slipped on what I assume was blood from some other poor creature. I need to stop making too much noises, otherwise I will be quickly surrounded and then it's over for me.   Why am I being punished? I did everything Vault-Tec instructed of me, I took care of those ungrateful bastards outside. I was just an office worker. I just wanted to prove that I was able to contribute more to this company, and for what? So that they just abandon me in this hellhole?   Well screw it, if I'm going to die anyway, either from starvation or being eaten alive, then I might as well go out fighting.   Fuck you Vault-Tec.   Sincerely, Eddie Gomez

"Poison" Ivy Andrews book-ended his career with the Yankees, starting in 1931 with Babe Ruth and Earle Combs and ending in 1938 with Joe DiMaggio and Joe Gordon. In between he played for three other teams and with a total of 16 Hall of Famers!
Ivy Paul Andrews -- Poison was the nickname, Ivy was his given name, and who knows why his parents gave him that first name -- was born May 6, 1907, in the coal mining city of Dora, Alabama. His father was a coal miner, as well as at least three of his brothers.
Andrews played football, basketball, and baseball for his high school team, and the Daily Mountain Eagle called him "possibly, the greatest athlete ever produced in Walker County."
After high school, he played semi-pro baseball and was signed by a minor league team in Mobile. There, he was spotted by scout Eddie Herr, who convinced the Yankees to spend $25,000 to purchase his contract.
Andrews spent the next four years in the minors, having some good years -- he went 9-1 for Albany in 10 games in 1929 -- but also some injuries that derailed his progress. In 1931, at the age of 24, he was pitching for the Jersey City Skeeters in the International League. The manager there was former major league pitcher and Previously Forgotten Yankee Bob Shawkey, who helped turn several promising prospects into bona fide pitchers, including Red Ruffing, Lefty Gomez, Johnny Allen, and another previously Forgotten Yankee, Spud Chandler.
Ivy wasn't great for the Skeeters, 7-12 with a 4.29 ERA, but the Yankees were struggling and needed a pitcher. More impressive than his minor league numbers was a start Andrews made in an exhibition game against the Reds in Cincinnati, throwing a shutout. Five days later, Andrews was in Detroit for his major league debut against one of the worst teams in the league, the Detroit Tigers. It wasn't pretty -- he gave up four runs, three earned, on 10 hits in six innings -- and he left with the Yankees trailing 4-1. But the Yankees rallied with a three-run 8th inning to tie it up and it went to extra innings and finally won it after 16 innings. Babe Ruth homered and Tony Lazzeri went 4-for-8 with an RBI.
He stayed with the Yankees the rest of the year as a swingman, three starts and four relief appearances, and finished his debut season 2-0 with a 4.19 ERA (96 ERA+) and a 1.282 WHIP in 34.1 innings.
The following year he started the season in the same role, getting one start and three relief appearances. In 24.2 innings, he had a 1.82 ERA and 1.176 WHIP, but the Yankees -- already eyeing October after a 32-14 start -- wanted a more veteran pitcher. On June 5, the rookie was traded to the Red Sox for Danny MacFayden. Though only two years older, MacFayden was in his seventh season in the majors and had won 16 games the previous year.
MacFayden was no doubt happy to be out of last place Boston, but it wasn't a bad move for Ivy, either, as he finally earned a spot in the rotation. He went 8-6 with a 3.81 ERA (117 ERA+) in 141.2 innings with the Red Sox.
The following year Andrews went 7-13 with the Red Sox, then was traded to the St. Louis Browns for Carl Reynolds, a former Washington Senator who in 1932 was in one of the most famous brawls of the era against the Yankees' Bill Dickey.
Ivy had three pretty good years for a bad Browns team, going 24-30 with a 4.29 ERA (117 ERA+). In 1937, the Cleveland Indians acquired him from the Browns, along with former Yankee Lyn Lary and former Yankee prospect Moose Solters, for two future Yankees in Oral Hildebrand and Bill Knickerbocker, plus Joe Vosmik, who the Yankees nearly had a deal for in 1935.
Ivy made his Indians debut at home in Cleveland on April 24, 1937... and got a rude welcome! The Sporting News reported on April 29, 1937, that Andrews was booed by the home fans because he took the mound in relief of teenage sensation Bob Feller, who had been pulled from the game after six innings.

The boy's withdrawal, as already recorded, brought good-natured Andrews to the box and he went to work in a mild chorus of cat-calls, not directed at him, of course, but at the sudden disappearance of Feller.

Andrews won the crowd over with three scoreless innings of relief. The fans didn't know until later that Feller, who struck out 11 but also gave up four runs on four hits and six walks, was pulled due to elbow pain; he'd make just three more appearances over the first half, but after the All-Star Break made 17 starts and posted a 3.29 ERA.
On May 8, Andrews threw a four-hit shutout against the Yankees, out-dueling Lefty Gomez. It was, believe it or not, the first time we had been shut out that season, and we wouldn't be shut out again until the end of September.
The 1937 Yankees were indeed a powerhouse, with a double-digit lead on 1st place in the middle of August. But trouble was brewing as Spud Chandler's chronic arm troubles were flaring up again.
Five years earlier the Yankees had a big lead and were thinking of adding a veteran pitcher for October when they traded the rookie Andrews to the Red Sox. Now, in 1937, the situation was reversed. On August 14, we bought the contract of the veteran Andrews from Cleveland for $7,500 and put him back into his swingman role, and over the final six weeks of the season he went 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA (145 ERA+) in five starts and six relief appearances. In the postseason that year, he was used as a reliever in the Yankees' only loss of the series, a 7-3 defeat in Game 4. (Previously forgotten Yankee Bump Hadley was bombed for five runs on six hits in the first two innings, and Andrews pitched the next six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and four walks.) It would be the only postseason appearance of his career.
The following year, despite battling a leg injury that caused him to miss about a month, Andrews posted a 3.00 ERA (153 ERA+) and 1.417 WHIP in 48.0 innings mostly in relief. On September 28, 1938, with the Yankees coasting into the World Series with a 9.5 game lead, Ivy got his only start of the season in a game against the Washington Nationals. He gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk, taking the 4-1 loss. No one knew at the time, but it was the 31-year-old's final major league appearance. He was on the World Series roster but not needed as the Yankees used only four pitchers in a sweep of the Chicago Cubs.
In 1939, Andrews opened the year with the Yankees' top minor league team, the Newark Bears. Used as swingman, he went 7-5 with a 3.13 ERA in eight starts and 27 relief appearances. One of Ivy's teammates on that team was prospect Marius Russo, a previously forgotten Yankee. When the Yankees needed another starter in June, it wasn't Andrews but the 24-year-old Russo -- who had a 1.97 ERA in 10 starts for the Bears -- who got the call.
After the season, Andrews was traded to the Pacific Coast League in exchange for a prospect with the intriguing name of Rugger Ardizoia. He'd play in the minors for a few more seasons, with some good games here and there -- he threw back-to-back shutouts in 1944, crediting it to a "horseshoe and two rabbit feet" -- but never got back to the Show. In 1945, almost 38 years old, he hoped for one more season in the minors with the Mobile Bears but didn't make the team out of spring training and retired.
Poison Ivy remained active as a high school football and basketball coach and referee, and in the late 1940s was the pitching coach for his hometown Birmingham Barons. But his primary occupation was as a carpenter and contractor. His wife, Josephine -- he married her in 1934 -- became a history teacher at his alma mater, Dora High School. Andrews died in 1970 at the age of 63.
In 1975, the Andrews Award was established at Dora High School in his memory. It recognizes a senior with good grades who played two or more sports, as selected by the coaches, principal, and seniors. In 1979, a baseball field at Dora Municipal Park was named in his honor.
In 1985, Andrews was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. As Andrews was being considered for posthumous induction, Joe DiMaggio and Bill Dickey wrote letters of support:

"I remember Paul as a quiet, soft spoken affable man. But, inside that quiet reserve, he had a fiery competitive spirit that made him such a valuable asset to the Yankees that it was easy for him to fit into our teams of that era." -- Joe DiMaggio
"Paul made himself a fine pitcher with hard work and determination. He was aggressive, a gentleman and an asset to every club he was with." -- Bill Dickey

A Little More Poison?

• Though fans knew him as Poison Ivy, teammates usually called him Paul, or, from his last name, Andy. Newspapers sometimes listed his name as Ivy Paul Andrews and sometimes as Paul Ivy Andrews, but Ivy really was his first name. Here's his tombstone.
  
• In the history of major league baseball, there have been just three players with the nickname Poison: Andrews and Hall of Fame brothers Paul and Lloyd Waner. Paul, though only 5'8" and 153 pounds, was known as "Big Poison" -- not because of his size, but because he was the big brother. Lloyd, 5'9" and 150 pounds, was three years younger and therefore "Little Poison."
  
• "Big Poison" actually ended his career in pinstripes. Waived by the Dodgers on September 1, 1944, Waner was signed that same day by the Yankees, who were just two games out of first place. He was told if the Yankees won the pennant, he would be on the World Series roster as a veteran pinch hitter... but the Yankees went .500 over the rest of the season and finished six games out. Waner, 1-for-7 with two walks that month, returned in 1945 but saw just one plate appearance the first month. (He drew a walk.) The Yankees released the 42-year-old outfielder on May 3 and he retired to become a batting coach.
  
• Prior to the 1937 World Series, one sportswriter gave this memorable scouting report on Andrews: “Paul dotes on slow stuff and freak deliveries. He has greater variety of stuff than any pitcher in baseball. Throws screwballs, sinkers, sailors, knucklers, has a snapping curve, a humming fast ball, control and savvy. He drives batters crazy with a meat ball they can’t carve." Contemporary sportswriters often said Andrews had the best curveball in the major leagues.
  
• Yankee manager Joe McCarthy, quoted in the New York World-Telegram in 1937 on how Andrews's soft stuff contrasted nicely to the rest of his pitching staff: “[Lefty] Gomez, [Red] Ruffing and [Monte] Pearson have the old fast one. Then along comes 'Andy'. They’ll break their backs.”
  
• Oddly enough, there are references to the screwball as Ivy's "new pitch" in both 1935 and in 1937.
  
• Andrews had a variety of unusual ailments that plagued him over his career. In 1929, Andrews was said to have "a severe cold in his right shoulder," a recurring problem that would plague him for the next two seasons. He missed time in 1932 with "lumbago and influenza" -- what we'd call today lower back pain and the flu. In 1933, The Sporting News reported that Andrews's start to spring training was delayed "as a result of playing peacemaker in a dog fight in Sarasota" -- apparently he'd been bitten on the hand! He also had a leg injury that caused him to miss games in 1938.
  
• The scout who signed Andrews, Eddie Herr, also discovered Carl Hubbell, Babe Herman, Earl Whitehill, and Heinie Manush. Among his many Yankee finds were Bill Dickey, Walter "Jumbo" Brown, George Pipgras, and previously forgotten Yankee Sammy Byrd.
  
• As noted above, the 1937 Yankees were shut out just twice all season. The first time was May 8 against Andrews, pitching for the Cleveland Indians. The second time was in game two of a doubleheader on September 29 called after seven innings. Ironically, Andrews started and lost that game for the Yankees!
  
• In four seasons with the Yankees, Andrews wore four different numbers: #22, #34, #28, and #24. The first is currently worn by Juan Soto, and prior to that, Harrison Bader. #34 was worn last year by Michael King, and before him, Justin Wilson. #28 is now worn by Austin Wells and prior to that Josh Donaldson, but we all remember it being worn by Joe Girardi from 2010 to 2017 -- he'd worn #27 his first two years as Yankee manager, then switched after we won our 27th World Series in 2009! And #24, worn from 1996 to 2005 by Tino Martinez and from 2006 to 2013 by Robinson Cano, is now worn by Alex Verdugo.
  
• Andrews's brother, Kenneth, was a minor league pitcher for several years in the 1930s. The Red Sox had him in camp with Ivy in 1933, but he never made the majors.
  
• There have been a number of Alabama-born Yankees, including Ben Chapman, Oscar Gamble, David Robertson, Joe Sewell, Virgil Trucks, Dixie Walker, and previously forgotten Yankee Andy Phillips.
  
• The Yankees were 32-14 and comfortably in first place when Andrews was traded to the Red Sox on June 5, 1932 -- and kept up that blistering pace after, going 75-33 the rest of the way. After they won the World Series that year, his former teammates generously voted to give him a cut of the World Series share. But Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis ruled that players traded within the same league couldn't get any sort of reward or compensation from their former team. I guess the thinking was a player traded to a non-contender might throw games to help his ex-teammates win the pennant if he knew he might personally benefit from it.
  
• The pitcher the Yankees got in return for Andrews in 1932, Danny MacFayden, was a 27-year-old righthander and one of the rare major leaguers to wear glasses while playing. His dour personality and chronic case of Resting Bitch Face earned him the nicknames "Deacon Danny" and "Dismal Danny" from the press. Though you couldn't blame him for looking unhappy in Boston after going 1-10 over the first two months of the season, despite a respectable 3.86 FIP. (The Red Sox were the worst team in baseball that year, losing 111 games.) He found more success in New York, going 7-5 with a 3.93 ERA (104 ERA+) in 121.1 innings over the rest of the 1932 season. He lasted another year and a half with the Yankees, earning an uninspiring -1.3 bWAR, before being released and claimed by the Boston Braves.
  
• Prior to the 1937 World Series, Andrews said he'd never seen a World Series game before. A newspaper reported Andrews "says if he can’t play in the big games, he doesn’t want to watch them."
  
• In 1938, Ivy's 3.00 ERA led the league... sort of. Under the rules of the time, you only needed 45 innings to qualify for the pitching leaderboard, so Andrews's 3.00 in 48.0 IP gave him the ERA crown. The title has since been retroactively awarded to Boston's Lefty Grove, who had a 3.08 ERA in 163.2 innings. (The current rule is one inning for every team game, or 162.0 in a 162-game season.)
  
• The prospect the Yankees got from the Hollywood Stars for Andrews after the 1939 season -- 20-year-old Rinaldo "Rugger" Ardizoia -- was born in Oleggio, Italy, and came to America as a two-year-old toddler. The family moved to San Francisco, where as a 6-year-old Rinaldo got the nickname "Rugger" because, as he explained it, he was "a rugged little bugger." Just as it seemed Ardizoia was on the cusp of making the Yankees, World War II came along and in 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Pacific theater for three years, returning in 1946. Though he'd pitch in the minors for another five seasons, he had just one appearance in the major leagues, pitching in two innings for the Yankees in 1947.

In four seasons with the Yankees, Ivy Andrews was 8-6 with a 3.12 ERA (140 ERA+) and 1.327 WHIP in 156.0 innings. That ERA+ reveals just how good he was, albeit in limited usage, while in pinstripes. Overall, in eight seasons, he was 50-59 with a 4.14 ERA (114 ERA+).

Descriptions are my weak point, especially landscape, physical spaces, etc. Some authors take great care to lay out the entire landscape or physical space word for word and honestly I just skim it all because there's no way I am going to accurately visualize, for example, the interior and layout of a spaceship with every minutiae described by the author.
I appreciate detailed landscape descriptions as well but they're all just words on a page to me.
Do you actually visualize or understand these descriptions or are you just skimming them like me?
Edit to add: some passage examples I struggle to visualize. I have to read the passages several times to understand it, often I just read it once and don't bother trying to understand it.

The Salinas Valley is in Northern California. It is a long narrow swale between two ranges of mountains, and the Salinas River winds and twists up the center until it falls at last into Monterey Bay... The Santa Lucias stood up against the sky to the west and kept the valley from the open sea, and they were dark and brooding—unfriendly and dangerous.... The likes of Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Idrissa Gueye are still indispensable, while Moussa Niakhate and young midfield duo Pape Matar Sarr and Lamine Camara have also shown their quality. However, the buildup for their defense of their title in Ivory Coast has not been perfect. Key players Youssouf Sabaly, Idrissa Gueye, Nampalys Mendy and Boulaye Dia are all struggling with fitness issues, while the recent revelations that Aliou Cissé has been unpaired for 6 months will only further disrupt the camp.

After tragically missing Senegal’s World Cup campaign, Mané will be determined to make an impact at this AFCON and further cement his amazing legacy. The former Liverpool star seems to be enjoying his new lease of life in Saudi Arabia, and for Senegal has has maintained his form, recently beating Henri Camara’s record and becoming the record scorer for the Lions of Teranga. Mane is undoubtedly still the main man for Senegal, especially given the struggles of Senegal’s other attackers this season.
Pape Matar Sarr (21, midfielder)
The Generation Foot product has enjoyed a whirlwind 2023, becoming an indisputable starter for both club and country. A dynamic midfielder key to Ange Postecoglu’s Spurs revival, Sarr has long been considered the future of Senegal alongside fellow former Generation Foot midfielder Lamine Camara, and this promise is now coming into fruition. On the bench for most of Senegal’s AFCON 2021 triumph, he will play a much bigger role this time around.
Nicolas Jackson (22, striker)
Jackson is another player who has had a rapid rise to prominence, as a strong run of form in the second half of the 2022-23 season with Villarreal convinced Chelsea to make him their number 9 for this season. This season has been more frustrating for him at club and national level, as he seems to have all the necessary attributes for a good striker except for consistently finishing his chances. However, given Boulaye Dia’s fitness concerns and the patchy form of Habib Diallo, Ismaïla Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye, this AFCON could be a chance for Jackson to step up next to Sadio Mané.
Predicted finish:
It is always difficult for a national team to defend their title, and since Egypt’s remarkable run from 2006-2010 no team has done so in the AFCON. Senegal have the ability to break that trend but fitness concerns in the midfield, lack of form for some key attackers, the sharpness of their ‘executives’ who have moved to the Gulf as well as a ‘group of death’ could all play against the Lions of Teranga. If Senegal are still able to top the group and make it pass the Round of 16, potential tests with Mali or consistent foes Algeria in the quarterfinals and Ivory Coast in the semifinals will prove very difficult, but the skill and know-how is there.

Cameroon are another giant who have fallen somewhat from glory, and though they may not be in full-blown crisis yet, such a situation may be brewing. Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o (who has had several scandals in charge) is a staunch supporter of current coach and former teammate Rigobert Song, who had a strong start in charge of the Indomitable Lions by qualifying to the World Cup and enjoying a decent campaign in Qatar. However, Song has never really convinced tactically, and a home draw and away loss to Namibia in March put the 5 time winners in danger of failing to qualify. Cameroon would ultimately qualify after Burundi imploded in the September finale in Garoua, but an unconvincing start to World Cup qualification, injuries and disciplinary issues with key players, and a difficult group do little to raise confidence in the Cameroonian media.

Vincent Aboubakar (31, Striker)
Cameroon’s captain and attacking talisman, Aboubakar only trails Roger Milla and Samuel Eto’o in terms of goal scored for the Indomitable Lions, and moments such as his acrobatic goal in the 2017 AFCON final, his nearly record equaling AFCON 2021 goal haul, and iconic World Cup 2022 have cemented his legacy in Cameroonian football history. Aboubakar has had a difficult 2023-24 season so far, with injury and disciplinary concerns even leading him to be removed from the Besiktas first team. With fellow star attackers Chupo-Moting and Mbeumo missing out, there will be even more pressure on Aboubakar to step up, but the native of the northern city of Garoua is more than capable of doing so.
André Onana (27, goalkeeper)
André Onana’s presence in the AFCON squad may be a bit of a surprise, after he hastily retired from international football after a bust-up with coach Rigobert Song during the last World Cup. However, he returned to the den for Cameroon’s crucial qualifying match against Burundi in September, citing his ‘unwavering love and attachment to my homeland’ and a need to ‘respond to the expectation and support of Cameroonians,’ despite ‘injustice and manipulation’. According to local sources the Manchester United star is still at odds with coach Song and Fecafoot head Samuel Eto’o, and his reintegration is at the request of the government. The recent announcement that Onana will stay with United until their match on 14 January, only hours prior to Cameroon’s opening game, only adds to a perplexing situation for one of the nation’s stars.
Andre-Franck Zambo Anguissa (28, midfielder)
A dynamic midfielder with excellent dribbling ability, Anguissa has been a mainstay for Cameroon since 2017, even recently captaining the side in the absence of Aboubakar. One of the key players in Napoli’s 2023 Serie A triumph, Anguissa is a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of both breaking up play and progressing his team further upfield. At times an underrated figure, this AFCON provides another opportunity for Anguissa to further stake his claim as one of the best on the continent.
Predicted finish
There is a lot of pressure on this Cameroonian side and the federation itself, and if the Indomitable Lions lose to Guinea in their first match (with Andre Onana set to be absent from the match), a disaster could unfold in Ivory Coast. Cameroon’s second match against Senegal will do them no favours and it could be a group stage exit for one of the giants of African football.

Le Syli National are perhaps one of the most inconsistent teams in Africa, often threatening to break into the elite but never truly doing so. Coached since 2021 by French-born former international Kaba Diawara, Guinea have undoubted talent in their ranks, composed of players born in Europe and products of the prolific local league and academy system. A poor start to World Cup qualification has raised some doubts but if their star players click Guinea have the ability to go deep into the tournament, and will enjoy a large amount of fan support in the neighboring Ivory Coast.

Naby Keïta (28, midfielder)
Perhaps one of the greatest ‘what-ifs’ in world football, Keita is a supremely talented midfielder, and looked to be the creative key to Liverpool’s creative puzzle when he signed from RB Leipzig. Since that day in 2018 injury and disciplinary issues have restricted him greatly at club level, however he has always been committed (at times too committed) to the Guinean cause, scoring crucial goals and single handedly changing the course of matches. It remains to be seen if he is truly fit enough to play a role in Ivory Coast, but if he is and can perform to even a fraction of his previous ability, Guinea’s chances will improve greatly.
Serhou Guirassy (27, striker)
A former French youth international with a journeyman career, Guriassy has completely blown up with Stuttgart, scoring 17 goals in 14 Bundesliga matches this season, second only to Bayern and England star Harry Kane. Guriassy has not been quite as prolific for Guinea since he declared in 2022, with 3 goals in 12 appearances, however he has provided an important focal point for Guinea’s numerous midfielders to play off. Guriassy has declared his happiness and pride to play for the country of his parents, and after proving himself in the Bundesliga, the grand stage of Africa may be next.
Saidou Sow (21, defender)
Born in Guinea but raised in France from a young age, Sow made his debut for Guinea in 2020 at the age of 18, shortly after breaking into Saint-Ettiene’s first team. The now Strasbourg defender has since established himself as a mainstay in the Syli National, even captaining the side in the recent October friendlies. Struggling for gametime at Todd Boehly’s pet project, this AFCON provides an opportunity for Sow to reestablish his credentials as a centre back with great promise.
Predicted finish
If Guinea can live up to expectations and get a victory against Cameroon in their first match, I believe the Syli National can go on to have a great tournament. Finishing runners up in the group and defeating a struggling Super Eagles side without influential midfielder Wilfried Ndidi in the Round of 16 is very much possible, and they in fact did so in a recent pre AFCON friendly.

Gambia may be a historical minnow and their performance in the previous AFCON surprised many observers, however rather than being a flash in the pan it may signal a new power arising in African football. The Belgian coach Tom Saintfet has done an excellent job since being appointed in 2018 and enjoys the full backing of the GFF, which though not perfect, has invested heavily in the building of football pitches and training centres in the country. Gambian clubs are now some of the highest exporters of African players to Europe, and Gambia’s success at senior level is mirrored by the feats of their U20 team, which finished runners up in the U20 AFCON and in the Round of 16 of the subsequent 2023 U20 World Cup. There is serious talent in this Gambian side for the present and future, and a highly anticipated match against neighbors Senegal will open up what could be another successful tournament.

Musa Barrow (25, forward)
One of the most experienced players in the squad, Musa Barrow made a name for himself in Italy, breaking through at Serie A giant Atalanta after being scouted on the streets of Banjul. Barrow also had a 4 year spell with Bologna, before being recruited by Saudi side Al-Taawoun. Inconsistent at times, Barrow boasts excellent pace and when on form is a great finisher, capable of playing from the left wing or up front.
Omar Colley (31, defender)
A product of the Gambian local league, Colley trialed with MLS side Sporting KC as a youngster, but due to the American club refusing to pay compensation a permanent transfer broke down. Colley eventually made his breakthrough in Scandinavia, playing for Finnish and Swedish clubs KuPS and Djurgårdens. His form there resulted in a move to Belgian giants Genk and eventually the Serie A with Sampdoria. The no-nonsense defender is now with Turkish giants Besiktas, and his vast international and European experience is invaluable to this largely young Gambian side.
Yankuba Minteh (19, forward)
Minteh also made his European breakthrough in Scandinavia, signing for Danish club Odense BK from local side Steve Biko at the age of 18. Minteh was quickly promoted to the first team for Odense and after an impressive debut campaign he was snapped up by Saudi-owned Newcastle United, who loaned him out to Dutch giants Feyenoord for the 2023-24 campaign. Still a bit raw, the young winger possess blistering pace, cutting in on his left foot to wreak havoc on opposing left-backs.
