2024.05.01 00:17 Alert-Assist-3103 AZ employee only getting paid once a month/maybe a retaliation case??

I work for a small business retail store I n Arizona. The owner is also the manager. She has three employees. We get paid once a month. Initially I thought this was weird because I’ve only ever gotten paid biweekly but I didn’t ask questions. I was just happy to have a job. I’ve worked there for almost a year now and I honestly didn’t think much of it until I talked with a friend recently about it. She was shocked I was only getting paid once a month and told me it’s illegal in Arizona. She made me realize this is wrong.
My question: is being paid only once a month actually illegal in Arizona? What do I do about this? Honestly my boss is extremely unapproachable and is very closed off to any suggestions or feedback. I don’t think she’d welcome a conversation about our frequency of pay. I’ve heard her tell people “if you don’t like how I run my business, leave.” But that’s not the point. Even if I do leave she will still be paying her employees illegally once a month if that’s in fact true. And it’s wrong.
Retaliation case? She sent this email to us cashiers and basically said if we didn’t clean the store the way she wants us to she would reduce our hours. Direct quote from email: “Hi all cashiers, everyday will be required to complete a daily cleaning sheet and light turn off list, sign and date. It is starting to get really slow and failure to do these required tasks will result in reduced hours.”
Thoughts on this if this happens?

2024.05.01 00:14 MariSi_UwU Pol Pot's practice in Kampuchea ⟨Autotranslation of the article from "Наука Марксизм"⟩ (there may be errors in translation)

Pol Pot's practice in Kampuchea ⟨Autotranslation of the article from
Introduction. One of the most poorly studied and revisionist questions to date concerning the class struggle of the international communist and labor movement is the question of Communist Kampuchea, and more specifically about the practice of the leader of the CPC (Communist Party of Kampuchea), Pol Pot. Left-wing opportunists, along with liberals trumpet that Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge are "people who long ago broke with the very foundations of Marxism-Leninism, people who exploited popular utopian prejudices, cultivated illiteracy, sadists and crooks..."[1]. However, such statements are not based on material facts and do not indicate the sources of such information. They are simply based on pulling out and twisting quotes from monarchical, bourgeois and communist figures in Cambodia, on distorting the political class affiliation of the latter and their actions during the Cambodian Civil War. We can say for sure that left-wing bloggers and leaders of left-wing organizations once again show their petty-bourgeoisness in practice, working contrary to the interests of the proletariat. Their formalism is evident in the fact that they have always adopted bourgeois dogmas about the "mass genocide" of the people of Cambodia by the Khmer Rouge, but in fact do not analyze the historiography of the class struggle in Cambodia during the civil war. The leftists themselves rivet their materials for the sole purpose of imposing, selling, and receiving for this material, i.e., they use pseudo-communist materials and theories only as a means of self – satisfaction of their imaginary authority and position, and the basis for this is a petty-bourgeois and commodity-based attitude towards communist practice. Their activity is conditioned by their class affiliation, which is communist in form and petty-bourgeois in content.
That's very true F. said ENGELS: "The bourgeoisie turns everything into a commodity, and consequently also history. Because of its very nature, because of the conditions of its existence, it tends to falsify every commodity: it also falsified history. After all, it is best to pay for the historical work in which the falsification of history most corresponds to the interests of the bourgeoisie "[2].
Therefore, there is no doubt that in order to extract the experience of each specific event in the history of the class struggle of other countries, it is necessary to consistently and interrelatedly study all the necessary sources, while already having Marxist class savvy and research methodology, and not repeat bourgeois phrases about the "bloody dictatorship". It is necessary to review the research and conclusions of the left-wing petty-bourgeois apologists hundreds of times, while being well aware of the primary sources of Marxism. Since this article is about Pol Pot, the purpose of this article is to study the activities of Pol Pot in the period 1925-1953 and ultimately determine the class character of its activities. 1. Pol Pot's activities in 1925-1953 Before starting a study, you need to identify the following factors, without which research is impossible: 1) The basic conditions under which Pol Pot developed – the mode of production, the class struggle, and the class correlation of forces; 2) Expression of Pol Pot's class character-theoretical views, class strategy and tactics in different periods of the class struggle.
The first part of our article will cover the following periods: a) From Pol Pot's birth in 1925 to his departure for France in 1949 — the period of formation of Pol Pot's revolutionary-democratic views; b) From Pol Pot's departure to France to his arrival in Cambodia in 1953 — the period of development of Pol Pot's communist views.
a) 1925-1949. Cambodia, 1925. It was in this year that Salot Sar (also known as Pol Pot) was born in the village of Prexbauw in the province ofон же далее – Пол ПотKompong Thom. His family's position was that of a well-to-do peasant, as his father, Pyong Salot, was a well-to-do peasant who owned 9 hectares of land and several units of draft cattle, and his mother, Song Nok, was a simple working peasant. The family had 9 children. The family also had good connections with the royal palace. Cambodia during the 20s-30s was a country of colonial status, which was caused by the dominance of French capital on its territory. From the undeveloped productive forces of Cambodia, many intertwined relations of production grow: semi-feudal, patriarchal, and private capitalist. On the other hand, the development of the productive forces was hindered by colonial and semi-feudal orders, and therefore it corrupted these relations. On the basis of the relations of production, the struggle took place between the following classes: on the one hand, the rural and industrial proletariat, the rural semi-proletariat, and the petty bourgeoisie (the peasantry), and on the other, the middle and large rural capitalists, as well as the royal officials. Semi-feudal relations were expressed in the exploitation of peasants by landowners through land rent. Cambodia had two types of land rents — sharecropping and fixed-and there were two sectors where rent relations were established: feudal-royal and private ownership. Sharecropping rents were found in areas of Cambodia with intensive agricultural production. It assumed that the tenant farmer gives about half of the product from the land to the landowner, depending on the area of production. As a rule, such peasants were in more severe conditions, especially in the central regions of Cambodia, as the peasants ' agricultural equipment was scarce and they were more dependent on the private landowner. Fixed rents prevailed in the central and fertile regions of Cambodia, both in kind and in cash. In its system, such peasants were arranged who had draft cattle and seed material, which is why their rent was much lower. This type of rent in monetary form was used by the royal family to exploit the peasantry, who owned land in the fertile areas of Cambodia [4].
Patriarchal relations were expressed in the fact that the majority of the population of Cambodia consisted mainly of small and medium-sized peasants, who were subjected to capitalist exploitation on the one hand, and on the other hand they lived and produced on their small land plots with undeveloped means of labor. The preservation of the patriarchal way of economy was determined by the colonial situation of Cambodia and semi-feudal orders. The industrial proletariat in Cambodia was poorly developed and extremely small, and its exploitation took place only on rubber plantations, in ports and in the railway industry. They also came from the small peasantry and rural proletariat, but they were already selling their labor power to the capitalists of these industries. In comparison with other undeveloped sectors of the economy, these industries were developed to the extent that they were financed by the French bourgeoisie, which just invested in these industries. The Cambodian population did not yet have a revolutionary spirit in overthrowing the royal power, but the tendency was for it to happen soon. The direct subordination of the Cambodian royal nobility to the French bourgeoisie, the infringement of the national rights of Cambodians, the growth of scientific historical research, commodity production and exploitation of workers and peasants by capitalists in Cambodia led to the growth of nationalist sentiments among Cambodian officials and intellectuals and demands for political independence [6]. Giving Cambodians a glimpse of their past pre-colonial history played against the French bourgeoisie, as the greatness of the past independent Angkor Empire of the 9th century was very different from the colonial position of Cambodia. This fostered a sense of national pride and anti-French sentiment among Cambodian officials and intellectuals. On the other hand, there were also hindering factors that prevented the rapid national awakening of Cambodians: the underdeveloped productive forces, the fragmentation of small producers and royal power. Since the isolated nature of production and the undeveloped productive forces remained, relations between the peasantry and the working class were limited. Workers and peasants were cut off from the royal power and divided among themselves (fragmented in the system of production), most of them considered the royal power to be something eternally existing and forever given, which determines their entire fate. It is clear that even among the industrial and rural proletarians there could not have been a strong growth of nationalist sentiments, much less communist ones, since these proletarians are recent small peasants with a corresponding class psychology.
There were weak ties between the peasantry, workers, and the kingdom. Most of them did not care much about visiting historical exhibitions and performances, because of their oppressed situation, which forced them to find ways to feed themselves and their families, falling into the bonds of capitalist exploitation, slightly mitigated by the French imperialists ' restriction of interest rates against usurers. The peasants themselves hated the city, because the central and developed areas of Cambodia, where commercial capital was developed, bought up the product from the peasants for a very small price, which did not pay for the peasants ' expenses. Nationalist sentiments at that time were only in the circles of Cambodian officials. It is too early to talk about the impact of the communist movement in Cambodia, as well as its impact on Pol Pot directly. The seeds of communism have been growing since 1930, when the first Communist cell appeared in a Buddhist university in Cambodia. This cell became affiliated with the Communist Party of Vietnam by mid-1930, and later became part of the Communist Party of Indochina. The practice of CPI during the 1930s in Cambodia was insignificant, and therefore not widespread enough in its provinces. The class interests of the communists and the bourgeoisie converged at that time, because the task was the same — to overthrow colonial oppression in a revolutionary way and achieve independence. The attempt to create an all-democratic front in Cambodia failed by 1938, due to the lack of a social base among the Communists and revolutionary democrats at that time. The communist and national movement was strenuously suppressed by the French bourgeoisie. While the communist movement was in decline in Cambodia, the Indochina Communist Party continued to work and monitor the development of the national movement in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. In 1934, Pol Pot and his older brother moved from their parents to Phnom Penh to study at a Catholic school. Phnom Penh itself was the economic and political center of Cambodia. Crafts, peasant farming and trade developed widely in it. Representatives of the trade were mostly from China [8]. Pol Pot's stay in Phnom Penh was varied: he studied at the monastery, visited the royal palace, went to dance performances of the palace and often interacted with dancers. The living conditions of the female dancers were poor. They lived in cramped inhabited huts on the outskirts of the palace complex, while the dancers tried to perform the dance intensely and clearly in order to be close to the king and please him. Not everyone was able to do this, and therefore failed dancers had to perform numbers for a very small amount of money. Given that Pol Pot's older sister was also a dancer, given Pol Pot's periodic meetings and conversations with other dancers, he was well aware of their life in the royal palace. In the palace, Pol Pot could also hear conversations of Cambodian officials with anti-French positions, which also influenced the further formation of Pol Pot's revolutionary democratic views. A group of nationalists consisting of Buddhist monks, student intellectuals, and government officials, led by Son Ngoc Thanh since 1935, has been launching democratic propaganda activities. The spread of anti-French sentiments occurs in the Catholic school where Pol Pot studied in 1936-1942. A Khmer-language newspaper, Nagarawatta, is distributed to Buddhist universities and schools, criticizing the French colonialists and calling for a national awakening. [9] The newspaper was widely distributed and clearly could be read and read Later, given his commitment to the study of reality, which he showed in school. The national movement was then developing alongside the communist one, and they then had the same class interests-the liberation of Cambodia from colonial dependence. With the beginning of the world crisis of capitalism, the contradictions between the imperialist Powers and the colonies are growing stronger, which are expressed in the rise of national liberation movements and the growth of nationalism in the oppressed countries. Similarly, in Cambodia, the nation led by the communist movement is beginning to grow in opposition to the monarchy. As the struggle between these classes becomes more acute, so does the variety of ways in which class positions are spread. Since the bourgeoisie and the Communists were fighting together, and since their class interests in overthrowing the monarchy coincided at the moment, democratic and anti-colonial sentiments spread among Cambodians, and Pol Pot also developed them as he participated in the class struggle. Pol Pot's revolutionary-democratic views before the war were shaped by his stories about the political struggle against the French colonialists and reading progressive books. During this time, Pol Pot developed a patriotic attitude towards Cambodia, a love for the Cambodian people, and a hatred for the enemies of his people. After the outbreak of World War II in 1937 and the Franco-Thai War in 1941, Cambodian nationalist sentiment increased, as, on the one hand, Cambodia entered a state of economic crisis, as a result of which the material situation of the proletariat, peasants, Cambodian bourgeoisie and bureaucracy worsened, and on the other hand, the weakness of the French bourgeoisie manifested itself in a loss in the 1940 campaign of the year, and then, under pressure from Japan, and in the surrender to Thailand of part of the northern territories of Cambodia and Laos in January 1941. The weakening influence of French capital was a prerequisite for the growth of the Cambodian national liberation movement. On August 7, 1941, Japan invades Indochina and Cambodia. The Japanese imperialists were a lifeline for the Khmer nationalists, because of their hopes that the Japanese bourgeoisie and the army would help establish the power of the national bourgeoisie in Cambodia. But Japanese troops and ministers similarly pursued colonial objectives in Indochina and did little to help the Khmer nationalists in the struggle, which led them to be harassed by the French police. In the same year, a new king, Norodom Sihanouk, is appointed by the Governor of Jan-Deku in Cambodia, as a distraction from the war to suppress their class consciousness in overthrowing absolutism. Due to the Japanese imperialist occupation of Cambodia, the Khmer nationalists hoped for their support from Japan. On July 22, 1942, Khmer nationalists held the first anti-French demonstration in the last 20 years, which became widespread in Cambodia. The demonstration was not supported by Japanese troops, and its leaders were detained by French police.
Pol Pot had graduated from Catholic high school and entered Norodom Sihanouk College. News of the demonstration spread through his college and many students were drawn into the demonstration.

2024.05.01 00:02 OnlyForEmma Self Treating Sources?

Hej everyone,
Sorry if this has been asked (no doubt many, many times) before...but is there a reliable source to buy hrt medicine for m2f?
I'm in Sweden, where you can only get hrt via public health. There is no private option for me and although I've self referred to all three clinics that allow it, the wait time to even get a meeting is quoted at 2+ years...that then leads to around 1 year to get a diagnosis, and then maybe you can get hrt then.
I'm worried because, well, I'm 46 now and doing everything I can to feminize my appearance (I've been seeing myself as fluid for almost 3 years), but now I'm realising I am most likely trans and want to do more to align my appearance with what my brain expects, but the thought of having a LONG wait (god I'll be close to 50...) before I can even start to get where I want to be, is so scary.
I have lived in Sweden for 5 years now but am from the UK and still a UK citizen (but with residence status in Sweden).
I have read a lot of people talking about self medication, but nobody seems to say where they actually acquire the medicine? I don't want to buy from somewhere that could literally be selling me anything 😭

2024.05.01 00:00 Proud_Discount1825 I need advice on a admin who I believe is harassing me

Please read and give any advice helps I’m just so lost!!!!
I (20F) work at a ABA clinic, if you don’t know what that is, it’s a clinic/school setting for kids ages 2-15 with learning disabilities. It’s a very rare occupation and with that I take great pride in proving the best quality therapy for my clients and with client dignity being my first priority NO MATTER WHAT! With that I’ve ran into the problem we’re a former employee RBT like me (43M) was (what I believe to be harassment, you tell me) asking me if I was pregnant though out many different phrases. Such as “oh morning sickness is a bitch right” right in front of my non verbal kid. Or flat out asking “you were out sick yesterday, are you pregnant” knowing damn well at the time when I started my job I was right out of high school. He was already there when I came to work at 18/19. But I made admin aware of this situation and the first time the lady I told actually never wrote it down or investigated it at all but also promised when I first told her that it “wouldn’t happen again, I will have a talk with him” but come to find out maybe 3 months down the road it happened again and I told them again, when she then proceeded to gaslight me into thinking I didn’t tell her the first time. But in reality she just didn’t fucking do anything with it after I told her. Nothing was said or done to him to my knowledge at least that’s what it sounded like. Because he continued not only with the pregnancy questions to me but to others as well (even to a woman that has infertility problems and recently lost a baby) which made me burn even hotter. I had finally had enough and marched my ass into one of the admins and told them that if this shit didn’t stop and they didn’t take care of it I would be knocking his ass out if another comment was made to or about me. Because even with being talked to he continued to be inappropriate. They wrote me up for “verbal aggression” and tried making me sign a contract saying that if I made any farther comments like that again my job would be on the line. I laughed in their faces and told them I wasn’t signing that. And they better hope the talking he got was going to make it stop and his job better be on the line too because I was done. But later that month he went into surgrey for a leg operation. After he had surgery he was no longer able to work with clients directly and began helping admin with making the schedule since he was chair bound or with crutches. Couple months into that they turned him into an admin so now he is above me and could be held to a “role model” status. He continued to make inappropriate jokes to employees around me but hadn’t messed with me in a while. As I was also avoiding any conversation bids he threw at me and stuck only to necessary discussions. Last Tuesday I was bent over talking to a client on the ground. (I had a tie dye work shirt tucked into my scrubs, and a crew neck over top of it). He was also in the room and he said “I have to keep reminding myself that it’s your shirt and not your underwear”. Even though I had been through it before over and over again I knew what to do without even thinking. I wrote the time down on my calculator on my watch so I could direct admin right to the camera and audio video camera we have in every room. After thinking about what he has said it almost made me throw up and I was so pissed off to the point I couldn’t even say anything. I was in shock. I could not actually believe what he has just said. I emailed hr after I got home that day. She talked to me later that week and I was so mad and disappointed in her abilities to control her employees and actually ended up making her cry. Which at that point I didn’t care because why the fuck does he still have a job. I didn’t believe them the first time they told me the shit would stop and I definitely don’t believe them now. They literally sent me that same day to the adult program in a different building. And that continued from that thru the rest of that day and Friday. That next week I worked the morning session with my daily client at my original place of work and had a conversation with an employee that asked why they put me at the adult program. I told her what had happened and she said that and while she was with a client last week, he came up to her and said “say what you want about child predators, but at least they drive slow through school zones” and I couldn’t believe my ears. I told admin and they pulled the girl in and she told them exactly what she told me. That next day I came into work asking that they would send me right to the adults building because I refused to work with him. But I gave them grace with the morning session taken the amount of call offs we had that morning. I figured I was needed here in the morning and they would send me after. Once morning session was coming to a close I look at the schedule and it says I’m here for the rest of the day and I had my client for the next session and my lunch buddy (which is the person that watches your client when you go and take lunch) and it was no other than him. And my lunch was the only lunch he was covering which I found weird. I went to find another admin to have my lunch switched because I didn’t feel comfortable being around him and everyone should already know that by now. Every admin was in a meeting and wasn’t available. He came down to my morning kids room before switch and said to take my lunch at exactly 11:30 so I can “decompress from the morning”. ( which I thought was also fucked up because I had a great morning with my client I didn’t need to even take my lunch that early I was fine) at 11:30 I go up the the lunch room to get my next client and he was there and told me to go. I went to try and find someone to talk to again before I went and ate. Ended up spending my entire lunch (15 min) trying to find someone fucking in charge. I knocked on the founders door and she was there! I went in and I told her everything down to the time He also tries to push clients into behaviors. Telling my client that he was going to “bring back terry, just for you” which was a therapist that got fired for abusing the children before I was even hired. I had no idea until my client finally calmed down enough to tell me this and who she was. I immediately went and told his BCBA (which is the person who makes the clients learning binders and everything the child does, which also includes them wanting to know everything, so they know what better way to help regulate them and keep them happy and learning. ) She was baffled he would even say anything like that and told me she would handle it. Then couple weeks down the road he was with a client and I was in the same room as him the client asked him “can you give me some space and stop dancing” as this fucker dances around acting like a fool. I was proud of the kid for sticking up for hisself because I could tell it was bothering him. This mf has the nerve to say “well you can either have space or watch me dance you can’t have both”. Which is written no where in his learning materials that we are supposed to stick to no matter what (unless specified by BCBA) Another instance where something like this has happened was when he yelled across the gym to a client that needed daily medication to “come get his drugs”. Or asking a different client that did the same thing if he “took 6 or 1”. Another instance was when he was asking a client if they wanted “pickle shots”. And probably so many other ones that I don’t even know about. I know this is a long post but is there any reason this guy should still have a job or am I fighting an endless battle and should start looking for another job. I’m so lost on what to do. I feel like they aren’t taking me seriously and the fact that he continues to keep his job after so many inappropriate conversations time after time again. I need to know what if anything else I can do? Or should I just choke the mother fucker out in the storage closet?

Visuals of the Day:
Episode 10 album
Theory of the Day:
We have two winners for Theory of the Day today! First up is u/Mirathan predicting exactly what Homura nearly does this episode:
I want to add another realisation regarding yesterdays episode. Since the barrier of a witch resembles what mentaly destroyed them and homuras barrier-room being filled with Walpurgisnach imagerie plus the silhouetes of the other magical girls she might be close to giving up.
And the second winner is u/blown-upp for their observation about Homura's wish:
Which makes me wonder if her time powers will be infinite until she achieves that goal? Her wish wasn’t just redoing her meeting Madoka, it was to also be strong enough to save her instead of being saved. Through the whole episode, every time she repeats the timeline she is inevitably saved by Madoka somehow (saving Sayaka’s Grief Seed and using it on Homura, one-shotting Walpurgisnacht, etc… each time she doesn’t manage to save Madoka or be strong enough to save her)
Analysis of the Day:
As for Analysis of the Day, we have two here as well! The first winner is u/Vaadwaur on his addendum about the mermaid and the unicorn symbolism:
So yesterday someone pointed out that the mermaid and the unicorn wind chimes made a good reference to the upcoming fight. Tell then show, as host says. And then someone linked some historical references about unicorns and mermaids, which adds to the depth of the piece. But heres the thing: The straight visual reference works on its own and the lore just improves it.
This was almost a revelation to me because it explains why some works, looking at you Eva, piss me off to no end: Their symbology has an entire fucking spiderweb of under current and you need to understand extremely specific versions of it to get it. And, unfortunately, all the people trying to recapture that vibe tended to not understand that you even needed the lore to line up so you get lots of random words thrown in. Quit hiding hiding behind Mai-HiME, Guilty Crown. We all know your sins. But yeah, the conclusion, or rather the punchline, is that if you make your symbology work on its most base level then the added stuff is a bonus.
Thought the second: What if there is more to Kyoko's symbology? The sphere let's her be the unicorn is that nice surface metaphor but what about going deeper? Well, the first possibility is that this is a weird as well response to the hedgehog's dilemna that Sayaka has put herself in. And yet...while seemingly violent, Kyoko's multiform spear does allow her to reach to anyone, even someone trying to flee or defend. Pondering out loud, but perhaps Kyoko's underlying trait is to seek connection.
And the second winner is u/dsawchuk on a detail about Madoka neither of us hosts thought about before:
So, like, that’s totally Sayaka/Oktavia’s Grief Seed, right?
I really like this easter egg. It doesn't make sense why Madoka would lie about having a Grief Seed left normally. It's like she values Sayaka more than just temporary survival since she knows what's coming even if she survives another day. She only decides to part with her friend when she thinks of a way to make it something other than a temporary extension on her unavoidable sentence.

(Told you we'd be sharing this one later in the rewatch, u/il887!)
Question(s) of the Day:
1) What did you think of the conversation between Madoka's mother and her teacher at the bar, as well as the scene when her mother tried to stop Madoka from running off?
2) So, we've been building up to it for the entire series; did Walrus Walpurgisnacht live up to the hype?
3) Your thoughts on the farming analogy?
4) First-Timers: What do you think Madoka will wish for?
5) First-Timers: What is today's date, and what holiday falls on that date?
Say, Homura? Could it be that Madoka’s potential to become the most powerful magical girl is because you kept turning back time?

2024.04.30 23:49 Small_Constant_269 Overuse of psychiatric terms

Is anyone else here tired of people overusing these terms? For example , everyone nowadays is called a narcissist. Everyone accuses someone of gaslighting f their opinion differs. Everyone is an empath. It really bothers me how frequently people use these types of labels. Someone just told me I have no empathy when in fact I put myself in everyone's shoes quote frequently in my daily life. It really hurt but then I realize how the overuse of these types of terms has contributed to sort of washing away and diluting the true meaning of the words.

Gradient AI releases Llama-3 8B with 1M context

Gradient AI has released a new Llama-3 8B language model version called Llama-3-8B-Instruct-Gradient-1048k. This model's key feature is its ability to handle extremely long context lengths up to 1 million tokens.

https://preview.redd.it/n7x9ppr6eoxc1.png?width=900&format=png&auto=webp&s=967a45db8301e5ae5822e7a1ffdd402245ea49cc
To extend the context window to 1 million tokens, Gradient AI used techniques like NTK-aware initialization of positional encodings, progressive training on increasing context lengths similar to prior work on long context modeling, and optimizations to train on huge GPU clusters efficiently. The model was trained on 1.4 billion tokens, a tiny fraction of Llama-3's original pretraining data.
Why does it matter?
The 1M context window allows the Llama-3 8B model to process and generate text based on much larger inputs, like entire books or long documents. This could enable new applications in summarizing lengthy materials, answering questions that require referencing an extensive context and analyzing or writing on topics that require considering a large amount of background information.

Mysterious “gpt2-chatbot” AI model bemuses experts

A mysterious new AI model called “gpt2-chatbot” is going viral. It was released without official documentation, and there is speculation that it could be OpenAI's next model.
gpt2-chatbot shows incredible reasoning skills. It also gets difficult AI questions right with a more human-like tone.

https://preview.redd.it/ebeui659eoxc1.png?width=738&format=png&auto=webp&s=9c842d765d9838660c262c37c68308d0ad25e30a
On a math test, gpt2-chatbot solved an International Math Olympiad (IMO) problem in one try. This does not apply to all IMO problems, but it is still insanely impressive.

https://preview.redd.it/m70fredbeoxc1.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=44ebda45ade36f61ae052fed46c32c793b467375
Also, many AI experts discuss the gpt2-chatbot's better coding skills than the newest version, GPT-4 or Claude Opus. Without official documentation, we still don’t know who released it and for what purpose.
However, there are a couple of speculations going around in the industry that gpt2-chatbot is:
  • It's secretly GPT-5 released early OpenAI can benchmark it
  • It's OpenAI's GPT-2 from 2019 finetuned with modern assistant datasets
You can try out gpt2-chatbot for free by visiting https://chat.lmsys.org direct chat. Unfortunately, with so many people trying it right now, there are slow response times and a maximum of 8 turns per conversation.
Why does it matter?
If the "gpt2-chatbot" model truly represents a major advancement in language generation and conversational abilities, it could accelerate the development of more advanced virtual assistants, chatbots, and other natural language processing applications. However, if the model's capabilities are overstated or have significant limitations, it may lead to disappointment and a temporary setback in the progress of conversational AI.

GitHub’s Copilot Workspace turns ideas into AI-powered software

GitHub is releasing a new AI-powered developer environment called Copilot Workspace. It allows developers to turn an idea into software code using natural language and provides AI assistance throughout the development process—planning the steps, writing the actual code, testing, debugging, etc.
https://youtu.be/pkotufZchjE?si=qBXKQMylRiACRh1I
The developer just needs to describe what they want in plain English, and Copilot Workspace will generate a step-by-step plan and the code itself. By automating repetitive tasks and providing step-by-step plans, Copilot Workspace aims to reduce developers' cognitive strain and enable them to focus more on creativity and problem-solving. This new Copilot-native developer environment is designed for any device, making it accessible to developers anywhere.
Why does it matter?
Copilot Workspace could significantly lower the barrier to entry for those who can create software by automating much of the coding work. This could potentially enable a future with 1 billion developers on GitHub building software simply by describing what they want. Copilot Workspace could also make software development more accessible to non-technical people.

2024.04.30 22:26 JamaicanJailBait The SGI practice does not help people become strong, resilient, and emotionally healthy - a disturbing case study

This is from Dr. Levi McLaughlin's April 2016 paper "Religious Responses to the 2011 Tsunami in Japan", starting on page 9 of 21. First a little background you may be unfamiliar with (I know I was):
On March 11, 2011, at 2:46 p.m., Japan was hit by the largest earthquake in its recorded history. The 9.0 tremor struck 129 kilometers off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture and triggered a tsunami that peaked at over 40 meters and extended as far as 10 kilometers inland. Thousands of square kilometers of the coastal regions across northeastern Honshū (Japan’s largest island) were devastated, with damage concentrated in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima Prefectures.
Most of the news coverage focused on the TEPCO nuclear plants meltdowns, not on the details about the people who'd lived there. 40 meters = just over 131 feet. 10 kilometers = a little over 6 miles. Unbelievable.
Years after 3.11, coastal prefectures in northeast Honshū still hosts communities of kasetsu jūtaku, temporary housing units, which are homes to tens of thousands of displaced refugees. Some survivors fortunate enough to gain sufficient funds through employment and government relief have been able to rebuild their homes or move away from the disaster zone, leaving behind the rows of tiny prefab units that stand in fields, on abandoned soccer grounds, and beside schools. Those who remain tend to lack the means to leave—primarily elderly, on a fixed income or poor before the disaster, bereft of family who can offer amenable accommodation, too psychologically devastated to get their affairs in order, or a combination of these and other challenges.
Here's the conclusion:
Additionally, what the Oguchis said and how they expressed themselves did not cohere neatly with a satisfying narrative arc of ruination leading into spiritual renewal that is common in member testimonials promoted by Soka Gakkai administrators. As the Oguchis spoke to me of their experiences with the tsunami and its aftermath, strong emotions rose to the surface easily and often. They derive joy from their daily work, and they clearly place a great deal of importance on their new, elevated role within Soka Gakkai, but years after 3/11 they remain fragile, prone to expressing profound grief. Unlike many survivors who have moved into reconstructed homes or far away from the disaster area, the Oguchis never escape the voices of the bereaved infiltrating their home at all hours, and they themselves are still visibly distraught. They shed tears of joy at having rediscovered their faith by gaining purpose in aiding others after the tsunami, but speaking with the Oguchis, hearing their anguished stories, and witnessing their wrenching mix of gratitude and sorrow, one might think the tsunami swept through weeks ago, not years. Summaries of their aid efforts do not convey this lingering trauma, nor do they do justice to the layers of life experiences that may explain why the Oguchis remain in their tiny temporary housing unit.
This all is an extremely disturbing report of the sort of thing the Soka Gakkai will never openly disclose. While this couple is doing good things for others, it really does sound like they're being exploited by the Soka Gakkai. Considering that there were two Soka Gakkai administrators along for the interview (see below), this might have been the best "face" they were able to put on for a visitor, and I think it turned out to be far more revealing than the Soka Gakkai would ever have anticipated (or chosen).
If anyone is interested in the detail:
Some who have the capacity to leave choose to remain. I have been fortunate to befriend two people who match this description: Masayuki and Kazuyo Oguchi. Since June 2011, Mr. and Mrs. Oguchi have occupied one of the 125 two-room prefab apartments that are pressed together in long rows in a kasetsu jūtaku community a short drive from the rocky coast of Miyagi Prefecture. On two occasions, in the summers of 2013 and 2014, the Oguchis invited me into their tiny home in the company of two Gakkai administrators to discuss their experience of the 3.11 disasters and their decision to live on in refugee housing. When I visited in 2013, their roughly eighty-square-meter unit was covered in decorations connected to their deep Soka Gakkai faith and their home’s status as a kyoten, a local base for Gakkai operations. Framed photographs of Soka Gakkai Honorary President Ikeda Daisaku and his wife, Kaneko, had pride of place on their walls next to a closed Buddhist altar that served as the center of the single room in which the couple sleeps and eats. Surrounding these images were pictures of flowers, calendars from the Gakkai daily newspaper Seikyō shinbun, colorful photos and articles on the Oguchis cut out from Gakkai publications, and a streamer of small flags from the People’s Republic of China that ran along the top of the living room: visitors from a Chinese university who are associated with one of several Ikeda Daisaku Research Centers in China paid a visit to the housing units, where they were welcomed by a local Gakkai delegation and a meal prepared by Mrs. Oguchi. During my visits, Mrs. Oguchi brought my Gakkai guides and me a steady stream of tea, coffee, cheesecake, and delicious prepared food, displaying a worrying level of generosity for a couple that obviously lived in poverty. Outside, the surrounding community was eerily quiet: only the distant bray of a diesel-powered generator made up for the absence of the ambient hum of modern Japanese towns that is noticeable only when it is gone. Inside the cramped unit, however, the paper-thin walls and creaky floors broadcast every footstep and quiet word from surrounding families. Privacy is completely absent in these homes.
The Oguchis are in their early sixties with seven grandchildren between them, but they are newlyweds, veterans of lives that were tumultuous before the 3.11 catastrophe.
This indicates they do have relatives they could have conceivably moved in with (as so many others in their situation did), unless there was some serious estrangement involved.
They are second-generation members of Soka Gakkai, divorcees
Divorce remains highly stigmatized in conservative Japan.
who met when they were 2 of more than 2,500 refugees crammed into a cavernous gymnasium in Onnagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, a community near the quake epicenter that was among the hardest hit by the tsunami. Both found their way to the gymnasium after their houses were washed away.
What an astonishing trauma!
Kazuyo had cared for her mother in her home, which was in view of the ocean and only a couple of meters above sea level. After days picking her way through mountains of debris toward where she imagined her mother might have survived, Kazuyo was found freezing by a rescue crew that lifted her by helicopter to the gymnasium. When she learned that her mother was not among the thousands of survivors taking shelter there she collapsed from shock. A fellow Gakkai adherent from the same town, a Mrs. Akimoto, found Kazuyo sitting unmoving. She wrapped her in a child’s blanket, the only possession the Akimoto family had rescued from their own destroyed home. Kazuyo’s mother’s remains were discovered on March 31.
“I lost ten kilos while I was in shock,” Mrs. Oguchi recalled. She talked of her mother, who was eighty-four years old when she was killed. “I could not believe it. How could someone who had persevered through so much die in one instant?”
What?? She was 84 years old! Why was she not better prepared for her mother's death? Mumsy was really really OLD! I know a death from a catastrophe is bound to feel different, giving all the associated trauma from the calamity itself, but c'mon!
Her mother had joined Soka Gakkai in the 1950s and had been cast out from her community in Kōriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, because of her faith; neighbors pelted her with water and garbage when she came to their homes in attempts to urge them to take part in Soka Gakkai’s chanting practice and to subscribe to the Seikyō shinbun. Kazuyo’s mother endured these humiliations in her role as what Kazuyo described as a bunshin, an “emanation” of Ikeda Daisaku, using the Buddhist term for a provisional form of an enlightened being created to spread the Dharma.
Yikes. That's details we NEVER hear through official Soka Gakkai sources.
“I was not serious about my faith before the tsunami,” she recalled. “But thanks to being raised by a good mother, I feel that there is meaning in her death. I think of her as passing the baton.” After her mother’s funeral, Kazuyo stayed on with the Onnagawa refugees instead of going to live with her daughter in Kōriyama, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to Soka Gakkai aid mobilization.
Perhaps moving in with her daughter wasn't really an option for her? Attributing her rejection/ostracisation instead to a deliberate decision to do religious stuff for Soka Gakkai would certainly have enabled her to "save face", so important in that culture.
Conditions immediately after 3.11 in the Onnagawa gymnasium were dire. After a chaotic first few days, the refugees were arranged in rows of 90 centimeters by 2 meters per person, nominally separated from neighbors by cardboard dividers. There were almost no emergency supplies making their way through the ruined roads. People would line up one at a time to get a paltry dinner at 5:00, their only meal of the day; if they did not show up in person, they would not get fed. Kazuyo joined the effort to coordinate with Gakkai leaders elsewhere in Miyagi and in Tokyo to serve survivors’ needs. As they brought in food, Gakkai volunteers also paid heed to the particular needs of these primarily elderly refugees: they shipped in adult diapers, suitable undergarments for elderly women and men, makeup, and other goods that allowed older survivors to regain a modicum of dignity. “Can there really be someone so pure as this?” marveled Masayuki when he saw Kazuyo taking the lead in these activities. “Someone who thinks only of helping others?”
Using every opportunity to promote the Ikeda cult.
Like Kazuyo, Masayuki had converted to Soka Gakkai as a child when his family joined the religion in the 1950s, and while he had taken an active role in the Young Men’s Division years ago, he grew distant from the organization as he descended into circumstances he only hints at in conversation. “I led a really irresponsible life (charanporan na jinsei),” he laughs through a persistent cough; his voice is rough, adenoidal, the ravaged remains of decades of chain-smoking. “Really, to the extent that you’d say ‘Wow! Someone like this exists?’”
Gratuitous advertising for Soka Gakkai, by someone who is clearly a damaged individual.
On March 14, he was approached in the Onnagawa gymnasium by Mr. Akimoto, husband of the woman who aided Kazuyo. Akimoto recruited Oguchi and Kurasaki, another Gakkai man in his sixties, to make a perilous journey by car from the nearby Soka Gakkai center through the rubble to a community hall in the mountains at which 300 refugees waited without food. “We didn’t know if we would make it back. Pipes were broken, waste water poured into the broken streets, there was lots of debris, yet three hundred people were there in the hall.” The three volunteers brought plenty of onigiri (rice balls) prepared by the Gakkai’s Married Women’s Division, yet they felt that partaking of the food themselves would create tensions: at first, the refugees greeted them with suspicion upon learning that they were a rescue envoy from Soka Gakkai. The three were also starving, “but we watched them eat. There were no Gakkai members there.” It is clear that Mr. Oguchi was immediately conscious of the need to project the best possible public image for Soka Gakkai; by not eating any of the food they brought, these volunteers could represent their religion as singularly dedicated to service of others.
Every moment regarded as a "shakubuku" opportunity, obviously.
On March 16, Oguchi joined the other Gakkai refugees in the gymnasium in reacting with profound emotion to the message from Ikeda Daisaku to the disaster survivors published that day in the Seikyō shinbun; Gakkai administrators distributed copies to the approximately 100 Gakkai members then living in the Onnagawa gymnasium, and Oguchi once again joined Akimoto and Kurasaki in rescue missions to other refugee centers, this time delivering easy-to-read large-print photocopies of Ikeda’s message to elderly Gakkai member survivors along with food and other emergency supplies.
Keep in mind that Ikeda did not show his face; he had already been MIA almost a year, since his last public appearance the previous year, in May 2010. For such an important event and incredibly necessary purpose for a religious leader, Ikeda was a no-show, and it was well known aside from the most brainwashed that others were writing these "messages from Ikeda Daisaku".

IKEDA SHOULD HAVE MADE AN APPEARANCE ON VIDEO AT LEAST.

“I am sixty-three years old now,” he told me in June 2013. “At sixty-one, I realized [Ikeda]-sensei’s greatness (subarashisa).” It was impossible for the Gakkai members to carry out their regular chanting practice—a twice-daily recitation of sections of the Lotus Sūtra followed by repeated invocations of namu-myōhō-renge-kyō (the title of the Lotus, known as the daimoku)—in the gymnasium. Masayuki, filled with renewed purpose, made a habit of joining Kazuyo in climbing the hill behind the gym early each morning to chant namu-myōhō-renge-kyō toward Onnagawa. The two focused their daimoku on everyone in Onnagawa achieving jōbutsu, the realization of buddhahood.
Wouldn't you think those people's health and safety would have been a more pressing concern, given the circumstances?
They became a couple, joined their two tiny cardboard-partitioned sections of the gymnasium floor into one, and began working together in Gakkai relief activities that eventually shifted from emergency aid to long-term relief projects.
Trauma bonding?
After Kazuyo and Masayuki moved into their temporary housing unit in June 2011, they launched into a busy schedule that combined aiding local residents, members and non-members alike, with intensive Soka Gakkai engagement.
Means "shakubuku".
As they continue to participate in regional aid initiatives, they hold regular meetings in their tiny home; their housing complex is home to four other Gakkai households and eight people they call rikaisha, literally “people who understand,” a term they use to describe readers of the Seikyō shinbun. The local members gather for study meetings, chanting sessions, and other events, and they commute frequently into Onnagawa and other Miyagi communities. “Around here, unless you have a car, you can’t carry out any activities at all,” Kazuyo affirmed. The impoverished couple estimated that they spent at least 30,000 yen (~US$300) on gasoline transporting residents to and from the housing units in their first year, to take part in Gakkai events but also to help non-members visit family, shop, and carry out other life activities—funds they pool from Masayuki’s job as a night watchman for a local business. They told me about how, while driving, they stop to pick up neighbors, driving them back and forth to relatives’ homes. “We do this joyfully,” added Kazuyo, characterizing the financial and time costs they accrue as the price of kōsen rufu, or the spread of Soka Gakkai.
This makes me really sad, how these elderly suffering individuals are putting the greedy priorities of the Ikeda cult Soka Gakkai ahead of their own well-being.
Mr. Oguchi expanded on his feelings about money. “For seven years, I ran a pachinko parlor; this shop was swept away by the tsunami. I made a salary of about ten million yen a month, with more than forty million each month in cash bonuses. But I spent it all, and I lost everything before the tsunami…. If money comes into your hand before you even think of it, you have no gratitude, and the things [you buy] do not evoke a sense of thanks. Going hungry as one works and feeling gratitude as one eats—this was not part of my life before.” Tears streaming down his face, he declared several times in my conversations with him: “The tsunami, for me, was the best thing that happened in my life.”
Yikes.
The Oguchis have become Soka Gakkai celebrities.
The Oguchis appear to value that celebrity status so much that they're willing to sacrifice their own well being and lives just to cling to it. Maybe it's all they have.
They have been profiled numerous times in Gakkai publications, and their home serves as an outreach center well known to the many Gakkai volunteers who continue to make regular journeys to Miyagi Prefecture. Soka Gakkai has incorporated relief efforts pioneered by the Oguchis, and by other Gakkai grassroots-level activists like them, into its carefully administered recovery efforts in the region. After 2011, Soka Gakkai mirrored the Japanese government in designating its efforts in the worst-damaged areas as fukkō 福光 (fortunate light) projects, employing a homophone for fukkō 復興, “recovery,” the ubiquitous term in Japanese governmental descriptions of disaster reconstruction.
How facile. Just replace a word that emphasizes all the work that still needs to be done with a substitute that gratuitously serves the Soka Gakkai feel-good propaganda but doesn't actually involve any help for anyone. "Just think positive thoughts, minions!" The Soka Gakkai loves these empty blandishments and doesn't particularly care about the reality of anyone's lives. Unless it makes for an "inspiring" story in their little publications, of course.
The Gakkai’s fukkō districts receive special attention from its volunteer crews, and even now on the 11th of each month the Seikyō shinbun publishes reminders about 3.11, ensuring that Gakkai adherents keep disaster victims constantly in mind as they conflate discourse on recovery with an optimistic aesthetic of fortune and light.
"Everything will be just FINE!" Notice there's no mention of the Soka Gakkai actually sending any MONEY to the disaster victims. But they'll blab incessantly about "an optimistic aesthetic of fortune and light" bleahhhhh
To conclude this case study: the Oguchis reveal that religious relief efforts can come about not from rational plans laid out by technocratic experts but as unanticipated consequences, as bottom-up initiatives by practitioners driven by complex combinations of faith and life circumstances. When regional Gakkai administrators learn of these grassroots-level activists, they urge them to expand their scope and integrate with broader institutional mandates. The local activists are celebrated for their efforts, and their contributions comprise contributions to a synthetic institutional narrative promoted in the hopes of fostering a positive public image for the group.
The Soka Gakkai is determined to profit from what they're doing - regardless of the costs to this elderly couple themselves:
But the difficulties endured by local members like the Oguchis are not conveyed by this narrative, nor are their contributions to relief and reconstruction. The impact of their personal transformations in the wake of the tsunami—certainly on Soka Gakkai members, but most likely also on families outside the group and on the temporary housing community to which they have dedicated themselves—defies this kind of summary.
They derive joy from their daily work, and they clearly place a great deal of importance on their new, elevated role within Soka Gakkai, but years after 3.11 they remain fragile, prone to expressing profound grief.

What do you think? It comes off just really sad and stuck to me, but what do I know?

2024.04.30 22:13 Rev_C4 "Potential" Man: Tokyo Devil Detention Center Arc (First post in the sub and probably the last.) TW: A LOT OF yapping, SPOILERS FOR RECENT CHAPTERS.

(First time making a post in reddit and in this sub this will be probably lost behind memes and fanarts which im fine with, I'm mostly a lurker when it comes to social media because of I've always been an introvert and a reclusive person in my whole life [I had to do a literal coin flip when considering about posting this, I'm that scared of posting stuff online], also because I got no one to talk to after a bad day so it's just more of a vent...please be patient while reading, english is not my first language nor I am too good with writing overall, so i hope you enjoy my yapping and feel free to either hate or show me a different way of looking at this issue.)
Personal stuff dump that I never got to share, just jump to next paragraph if you don't want to hear me yap:I don't even know how to begin but I'll just start by saying that I've started reading Chainsaw Man because my highschool crush suggested it around 3 years ago and I thought this was an opportunity to maybe talk with her, anyways I've took my time to read through the chapters and stopped when part 1 ended. Time skip to January 2024 after remembering that I've made myself forget about part 2 release so I could read in mass the chapters, for the next few days I started building enough mental fortitude (for context I tend to attatch myself too much to fictional characters and y'know....the whole Aki thing didn't help at all with that) and honestly part 2 has its issues but it has been quite an interesting and fun story IMO, yeah sure the part has hit a plenty of bumps with art, story, decisions and whatever else you can say, which for me honestly, as the "certified npc in this world" badge on my forehead says, I don't really mind since all I do is sit down, read through the chapter in manga plus and be like at the end of the chapter "Hm...peak" and that's it, I go on with my life taking public transportation and not understanding what people around me are saying. But for the past few weeks something in my head is feeling...numb let's just say.
Enough with the rambling, time to get to the reason why you clicked on this post. (by starting another rambling >:).)
Look, I'm someone who believes that if you don't pay for something, you shouldn't criticize it, but after some thinking I believe spending my time reading this manga and lurking around this sub reading daily posts about cute ships (except nayuta/denji, that's straight up pedo shit, consider yourself an opp if you like this), quanxi brain rot, kishibe brain rot, badass fanarts, awesome cosplays but one thing from this sub I've always noticed was the critics of part 2, which always peaks my attention, even the ones who are only talking about super small stuff like Kobeni's brother feet going through a table or whatever that was. Because they always split the community in 2 parts (no pun intended), the ones who are the warriors of Fujimoto's work and the ones who just want to point out some stuff they felt lacking or any other motive. Which for me is the most common thing in a human being, people WILL be divided when a topic is brought up, it's what makes us human. Also don't get me wrong on how I potentially described you, feel free to defend Fujimoto, I like to watch the reply section catch on fire sometimes ; ).
But now onto my feelings towards this Arc, SPOILER WARNING to most recent chapters, oh boy, I don't know why but I feel like I'm shooting myself on the foot for writing this instead of just continuing to lurk in the shadows of this sub.
I'll be direct, it felt rushed. And I mean it all the way to the meaning of the word in the dictionary. I had so much hype when the community was together with all the memes of "[...] It would take a war to compromise this facility's safety." that single quote made me already think how many memes the community would make with that, and I was glad I was right, Kishibe in a dress, Reze bros coping harder than ever with the quote, AKI IN A DRESS?! It was wild time, probably the best in my opinion. But then the chapters started rolling out, which at the start they were funny and fine but then they started downgrading...I remember I opened a fresh tank of copium because this arc had the potential to bring back several devils or characters from part 1, Future, Fox, Ghost(?), Reze, Kobeni (ik she retired but i can dream), Kishibe, heck even Angel in a new form! Which would be awesome to see even more on ressurected devils, the potential! Or even...a Human/Knowldege Devil? At the time I was sleeping so at ease and wishing time went by faster to read more chapters of this arc.
CHAPTER 159, GOATANA AND NOBAR- i mean NAIL FIEND APPEARS!!! I was so happy to see how much Katana has developed in his combat ever since the last time we saw him in a long battle, a fear boosted Asa/Yoru versus Katana and Nail, I was so happy to see we were having weekly releases, but it also started worrying me, I was afraid of Fujimoto's life of having 2 Movies and the Manga happening at the same time.
Chapter 160, this, this is the first time I felt like I didn't say "Hm...peak." , which that day I was fine with it, not every chapter has to be a banger, plus Goatana in the team! Woohoo! This will surely mean they'll get to Denji faster!
Chapter 161, Wait...they...already found Denji? Okay, of course! Fami knew the exact place...but really? No like...extra security that doesn't involve throwing human fodder into them? (No, quanxi doesn't count, hold on) Well...okay I guess, surely enough the trip back will be very difficult and THEN we'll see the potential of this Arc in all its glory! Patience is all I need.....Wait is that Qua-
chapter 162, i think by now you noticed the change of my emotions towards these chapters by reading the words in bold. Look, going to be direct, Katana kinda disappointed me, I thought he would...y'know...change, but then again it's Katana, nothing changed from him other than he went to jim, we still don't know his name, and that for me says a lot. I just wished we had more time for his proper introduction. As for the rest of the chapter this was the dark age of CSF, all thanks to a chinese woman showing up I guess, I don't even know why she appeared, or why she's being used in Part 2, like go get some fiends(bitches) this is not even hate just genuine confusion why she's sticking with public safety other than "Oh we have your fiends", whatever, at least it's not the end of the arc-
chapter 163, ...wait I went to the bathroom, did I miss something? Oh a TV! that must be them in a employee's only break room! Yeah the cables in the roof look like the ones from the halls- no nevermind they're just chilling in a huge bed...okay...Lego Denji is assembled. This isn't the end of prison arc, right?
chapter 164, it is. Let's go get sushi. I really hope they're going back for Nayuta and she's in this detention center...
This transition from chapter 162 through 164 is what made me write this whole text. It felt rushed, it could've been explored with more time, I believe Fujimoto could've definitely just made those chapters biweekly and I wouldn't say anything if it meant seeing more of this facility that only a "war" would compromise its safety, displaying some actual Public Safety firepower like canon fodders who are just in for the money or just Yoshida receiving news about this shit, and for last I believe Fujimoto making these chapters weekly at that time was just so he could rush this arc and get to a better position narratively having Asa and Denji and their whole spiderman face reveal thing...I can understand if it was a schedule thing but then that just means Fujimoto could've done a different approach like Fami having internal connections being the reason why they managed to just skip through the facility in and out??? I don't know, just my opinion on the matter.
After typing this much I feel like I could've done my college essays instead of this, but, Chainsaw Man has been and still is a major point in my life, as stupid as that sounds its true, it's what got me into socializing more (or at least wanting to), it's what got me through some rough times, it's what got me into reading different stories from different authors instead of the repetitive routine of boring studies and brainless long gaming sessions after school in a discord call with my only 2 friends who i've never seen their faces, only pictures of fictional characters. This story is what motivates to wake up and repeat my routine, always looking foward to reading the next chapter, thinking of it as a "reward" of some sorts for going through mental stress and loneliness when I have no one to talk or interact with. I feel like an idiot for oversharing so much and I will most definetly regret for doing so. But I guess this is how I can show somewhat of a contribution towards this series, for good or for bad.
Anyways, I am genuine greatful if you read this entire thing without closing the post or doing something else with your precious time, have a good one and I wish you the best in your life. : )
TL:DR: The Arc felt rushed where in some parts it could've been explored better if it meant taking more time for breaks or just taking a different approach to things instead of major points being shut down in a later chapter. And as idiotic as this sounds it affected personally my view in the series as someone who accompanied Denji's journey before even.

2024.04.30 21:48 percyjblack Quick Start Guide to 18:6 Fasting

Intermittent fasting has profound health benefits, and a growing body of research supports its effectiveness in improving metabolic health, boosting weight loss, and promoting longevity.
Here’s a complete guide to 18:6 fasting to get you started and practical tips and tricks to transition smoothly into extended fasting periods.

What is 18:6 fasting?

An 18:6 fast involves alternating between an 18-hour fasting period and a six-hour eating window.
Because of its simplicity, 18:6 fasting is one of the most popular intermittent fasting schedules that has helped many individuals lose weight, improve their metabolic balance, and enhance their overall health.
During fasting periods, the body is forced to utilize stored body fat instead of blood glucose to generate energy. This metabolic switch from using sugar as a fuel source to burning fat triggers ketosis.
Ketosis is a metabolic state that enhances the body’s ability to burn fat. This not only helps weight loss but also has been linked to improved energy levels, mental clarity, and better blood sugar control.
Watch the video below to discover why fasting for 18 hours can dramatically spike brain power.
Dramatically Spike BRAINPOWER with an 18 Hour Fast

Is it safe?

The 18:6 fasting regime has gained widespread popularity due to its impressive health benefits, and research repeatedly confirms the effectiveness and long-term safety of intermittent fasting.
A study published in Diabetes Care evaluated the safety of intermittent fasting in diabetic patients. The authors summarized that adherence to a time-restricted eating pattern is a safe and feasible therapeutic strategy to promote metabolic and hormonal health.
“From an evolutionary point of view, the human body is well adapted to intermittent fasting, which mimics the natural feast-and-famine cycles that our ancestors experienced,” explains Dr. Berg.
Although the 18:6 fast is considered safe for most people, it’s crucial to understand that some people should avoid fasting.

Who shouldn’t do 18:6 fasting

Intermittent fasting can increase the risk of unhealthy eating patterns in individuals with eating disorders.
In addition, those who are underweight or at risk of malnourishment could lose excessive body fat or develop nutrient deficiencies when limiting food intake to restricted time periods.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are periods of increased caloric needs, and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers shouldn’t practice intermittent, prolonged, or alternate-day fasting.
Fasting can trigger profound metabolic changes, and it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional if you have underlying medical conditions such as poor liver function, kidney disease, or low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia, before starting the 18:6 fasting routine.

Health benefits of 18:6 fasting

Although many individuals start practicing intermittent fasting to achieve a healthy weight, time-restricted eating has various other health benefits beyond weight loss.
Research published in The New England Journal of Medicine investigated the health benefits of the 18:6 fast and concluded, “The 18:6 fasting pattern can trigger a metabolic switch from glucose-based to ketone-based energy, with increased stress resistance, increased longevity, and a decreased incidence of diseases, including cancer and obesity.”
Here are five health benefits of 18:6 fasting.

1. Promotes a healthy body weight

Time-restricted eating patterns naturally limit calorie intake, which helps avoid weight gain and promotes weight loss.
However, the benefits of intermittent fasting for weight management aren’t just linked to calorie restriction during fasting windows.
Fasting stimulates growth hormone production, which can boost muscle mass and enhance the body’s capacity to utilize stored fat as a fuel source, thereby promoting fat-burning and weight loss.

2. May help reverse diabetes

Fasting for 18 hours keeps blood sugar levels balanced, which helps prevent insulin resistance linked to metabolic syndrome, obesity, and diabetes.
Intermittent fasting has been extensively studied as a potential therapeutic tool to prevent, manage, and even reverse diabetes.
A study published in JAMA Network Open found that time-restricted eating improved weight status, long-term blood glucose control, insulin sensitivity, and other metabolic health markers in diabetic individuals.
In fact, 18:6 fasting has such profound benefits for metabolic health that intermittent fasting could replace insulin for diabetes, potentially providing an effective and safe alternative to pharmaceutical diabetes treatments.

3. Boosts brain function

Evidence published in Nutrition Reviews suggests that fasting directly stimulates the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
BDNF is a crucial protein supporting neuronal cell growth and functionality. Higher concentrations of BDNF in the central nervous system are associated with improved cognitive function, memory recall, and mood regulation.

4. Triggers autophagy

Fasting for prolonged periods triggers autophagy, a cellular recycling and repair mechanism that removes damaged or dysfunctional cell organelles.
Autophagy is a crucial process that helps maintain cellular health and functionality, which is associated with a lower risk of various chronic diseases, including cancer, atherosclerosis, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

5. Supports heart health

Metabolic and cardiovascular health are intricately connected.
Obesity, blood sugar imbalances, and insulin resistance are all established risk factors for heart disease, significantly increasing the chances of cardiovascular issues such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes.
Intermittent fasting has been shown to restore balanced metabolic functions effectively. This makes time-restricted eating a powerful strategy for promoting a healthy heart and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

How to start an 18:6 fast

The key principle of the 18:6 fast is to avoid food and calorie-containing beverages during an 18-hour fasting period.
While it may be tempting to start with 18-hour fasting periods immediately, it’s crucial to remember that your body needs time to adapt to prolonged caloric restriction.
Fasting for too long too quickly is one of the most common intermittent fasting mistakes and can lead to unpleasant side effects, including headaches, dizziness, irritability, and disrupted sleep.
If you are new to intermittent fasting, it’s recommended to start with a 14-hour fast followed by a ten-hour eating window and gradually prolong your fasting periods until you reach an 18:6 schedule.
How quickly you can achieve a consistent 18:6 fasting routine depends on your metabolic health and overall dietary pattern. While some individuals can fast for 18 hours within a few days, others may require several weeks to comfortably restrict their eating periods to six hours.

What can you drink while fasting?

During the initial stages of adapting to caloric restriction, fasting can lead to temporary fluid loss and disruptions in electrolyte balance.
Adequate fluid intake during fasting periods is crucial to minimize the risk of dehydration. However, it’s vital to consume calorie-free beverages that won’t break your fast.
Here are fasting-friendly drink options:
In addition, replenishing electrolytes during fasting periods with a sugar-free electrolyte powder is an excellent option for maintaining the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. This supports overall well-being and helps prevent fatigue, dizziness, and muscle cramps.
Many people who practice intermittent fasting drink bulletproof coffee during their fasting period to help curb hunger, boost energy levels, and enhance mental focus.
Although bulletproof coffee does contain calories, it’s considered fasting-friendly as it’s made with black coffee, butter, and coconut oil, none of which interfere with the body’s natural fasting state.

Tips and tricks

While time-restricted eating has various metabolic advantages, it’s equally important to consider what you eat during your eating windows.
Combining an 18:6 fast with a healthy diet can speed up fasting success and help you achieve your health and fitness goals more effectively.
Here are four tips and tricks to smoothly transition into an 18:6 fasting regime.

1. Eat plenty of healthy fats

Consuming plenty of healthy fats during your eating window plays a critical role in providing your body with fuel and can help maintain fat-burning even when you break your fast.
Obtaining the majority of your daily calories from fats while limiting carbohydrate intake keeps blood sugar levels low and forces your body to continue using fat to generate energy.
Limiting carbs keeps your metabolism in ketosis, which explains why a nutritious high-fat diet such as Healthy Keto® is an ideal intermittent fasting diet meal plan.
Combining keto with intermittent fasting is an excellent strategy to maximize the health benefits of ketosis and helps curb hunger and cravings during your 18-hour fasting period.
There are plenty of healthy fat sources on the keto food list to choose from, including olive and coconut oil, full-fat cheese, butter, heavy cream, seeds, and nuts.

2. Focus on nutrient-rich foods

Processed foods can increase the risk of nutritional deficiencies as they typically lack vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and other vital nutrients necessary for overall health.
It's crucial to prioritize nutritious foods to ensure your body gets the nutrients it needs to function optimally, especially during fasting periods.
Healthy Keto focuses on nutrient-dense organic vegetables, grass-fed meats, wild-caught fish, and pasture-raised eggs, making it a perfect addition to an 18:6 intermittent fasting schedule.

3. Limit carbohydrates

Sugar and carbohydrate-rich foods, such as bread, rice, and pasta, are rapidly broken down and absorbed, which raises blood sugar levels.
Elevated blood sugar will stop ketosis and fat burning, as the liver prioritizes using blood glucose as a fuel source. Consuming carbs and sugars when you break a fast can slow fasting success and hinder weight loss.
In addition, sugar and refined carbs can cause blood sugar imbalances and energy fluctuations. This can trigger hunger and cravings during your fasting window, making it more challenging to achieve an 18-hour fast.

4. Avoid snacking

Breaking a snacking habit is crucial to smoothly transitioning into intermittent fasting and helps prolong fasting periods.
Consuming any foods that raise blood sugar levels, even low-calorie or healthy snacks, can break the fasting state and disrupt ketosis and fat-burning.
Although it might seem challenging to avoid snacking during the initial stages of adapting to intermittent fasting, hunger, and cravings will decrease as your body adjusts to using body fat for fuel.

2024.04.30 21:21 Nowan321 "I am not a thing in the world; I am the space in which the world is happening."

The daily quote by Richard Lang. This may be true because I am the context in which phenomena arise. However, at the same time it is false because the context is inseparable from the content. This is a true contradiction. Sorry Aristotle, I'm throwing the "law" of non-contradiction in the Recycle Bin. This may upset many rationalists.

2024.04.30 21:12 throwawaytopluto123 Advice on how to proceed with a 16yr old dog's health?

Species: Dog
Age: 16 Sex/Neuter status: Neutured
Breed: Mini Schnoodle
Body weight: 24lbs (down a few pounds over the last year despite eating every meal)
History: He had knee surgery a few years ago and his leg strength never fully recovered since he broke the split and then it had to be removed. He's been doing physical therapy (water and land!) for 2 years now and always seems to be progressing. The physical therapists say his pain level is down to a 1 or 0. I'm not sure how they know that. He does have arthritis. He is still eating and drinking!
Clinical signs: Recently he's been more incontinent. The vet said to rub his butt if he doesn't go when outside so that way he doesn't go inside. We thought it may be due to the pain medications he's on. One is gabapentin. He's with my parents so I don't have the exact others. He also tends to pace but is also flopping down a lot. But my parent's floors are really slippery so he wears grippy socks.
Duration: More alarming symptoms have been over the last year.
Your general location: Northern Virginia
Links to test results, vet reports, X-rays etc.
Here is what they want to do test-wise to get a full picture of his health. He's had the neurological exam. They said it could be anything from an ear infection to a tumor at the base of his head. He has not had any seizures.
(the quoted cost is $5,500-6,000)
These are copied from a billing sheet quote my mom sent me! In your professional opinions which seem reasonable for a dog his age? My parents are concerned that he is too old for anesthesia and therefore should not get an MRI. I think they want to stop medical testing.
I've been under the impression that if he's eating and drinking and going to the bathroom, even if more incontinent, that he may not doing so horribly. I would like them to get an MRI done because perhaps he's still treatable.

2024.04.30 20:58 TakeControlOfLife Constructive Dismissal, hostile work environment - Maryland

Hi there,
I live in New Jersey, company is based in Maryland.
I have been in limbo at a small management consulting company for the past few weeks. I was hired in a dual role as a Senior Financial Analyst and Project Analyst. Before being hired full-time I worked 2.5 years for them as a contractor through a 3rd party company.
Here's a quick timeline of events. (obviously working off memory and had to stick with highlights)
I state the following to HR:
Since being hired I have experienced the following:
  1. Abusive work environment with pervasive office politics and mistrust, an environment that sets you up to fail.
  2. Unreasonable work expectations and accusations of incomplete tasks and declined tasks.
  3. Inappropriate personal comments about the way my parents raised me and guilt-tripping over a recommendation letter.
  4. Physical and mental health issues exacerbated by excessive work hours, evidenced by an average of 4 hours of sleep per night in January as per my sleep tracker device. As well as exacerbated ADHD symptoms which have become even more prominent under the pressure I am experiencing.
  5. A shift from full-time to an undocumented prorated part-time status.
  6. Assignment of tasks beyond my qualification, notably in advanced accounting.
  7. Removal of my financial analytics duties due to unattainable expectations.
  8. Lack of trust in management and fear of retaliation.
  9. Pressure to resign if unable to meet the constant changing job requirements.
  10. Impact on my education, leading me to drop my graduate course for the semester.
  11. Consistent reframing of what I've said and making it out to be something it is not.
  12. Character assassination to delegitimize my work efforts.
  13. Access to the system shut off as of the 16th, which is when the new pay period started. No response from HR until yesterday, no response from IT.
  14. The above point also impacts my ability to request PTO which considering I just had it sorted out with HR and it was stated in writing that I would be able to begin utilize it this pay period, with everything else, is quite suspicious.
  15. OWNER admitted interest from Friday in protecting her unemployment insurance rates.
  16. No warning from my current manager, MANAGER. From her perspective, I have done nothing wrong and there was nothing to give me a warning about.
  17. AUDITOR who is managing the PROJECT NAME projects also had no criticism toward me in the context to my work there.
Attorney friend said that I scared the shit out of their HR team but legally speaking they're only liable for discrimination and EEOC complaints, beyond that, I could potentially pursue a legal case but it would be a pain in the ass. But in regards to my case to keep my unemployment benefits from being disrupted, from her understanding, is likely very strong.
April 30th - HR offers to pay out 40 hours of my accrued PTO plus 35 hours of pay for a "soft landing" but asks me to sign a document stating i'm the one resigning. I show it to my attorney friend (although she specializes in a different state and isn't familiar with Maryland or NJ) and she says that if I sign this, I won't be entitled to unemployment.
I refuse to sign, and declare that I am not resigning and have never stated an intent to resign and that they should send me the recording links, which i've asked for before and they never sent it. They ignore everything I say and just say "ok we will fix the address on file and update our records."
Am I fucked? Why are they trying to fight me so hard? I have witnesses, screenshots, proof in every ounce of everything I state even though they've conveniently locked me out of the system. Is this not constructive dismissal? Some people said that small business owners take benefits payouts personally and they can be vindictive when faced with situations like this.
Man, i'm exhausted dealing with this shit and just want to move on but if they want to fight this I swear to God I will go to the deepest lengths possible to fight this to the full extent of the law. It's destroying my mental health and i'm doing my best to prepare for technical interviews but it's so distracting to deal with.

2024.04.30 20:41 aswinrg 📚 17/52 ~ The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Many of you must have read The Great Gatsby at school. I didn’t, and I really wanted to see what all the hype was about. Unfortunately for me, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic failed to impress.
~
  1. Why this, why now 🤔
I saw the movie of the same name, starring Leo Dicaprio, many years ago and have heard about the book forever. I wanted to read it and see for myself what made it a classic.
Usually, I don’t look at the ratings on Amazon/Goodreads or read the reviews before buying a book. After a couple of misses, especially with fiction, I definitely will at least take a peek at what other readers say before buying a book.
  1. Quotes of the book 💭
“Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead.”
“It’s a great advantage not to drink among hard drinking people. You can hold your tongue, and, moreover, you can time any little irregularity of your own so that everybody else is so blind that they don't see or care.”
“It takes two to make an accident.”
“The rich get richer and the poor get—children.”
“There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the tired.”
  1. Going deep 🧐
F. Scott Fitzgerald is a great writer. No doubt about it. How he describes even the simplest situations makes you feel like you’re actually there. All those adjectives and wordplay are brilliant. However, the story of The Great Gatsby is incredibly dull and boring.
It is inspired by Fitzgerald’s romance with socialite Ginevra King. King's parents did not allow the couple to be together due to Fitzgerald’s poor financial status at the time. Like Gatsby, the author went to war hoping to die and came back engaged to another woman. It was a great story (of course, sad that they couldn’t be together) in real life, but unfortunately, it was not presented well on paper.
Many of Scott’s characters mirror the reality of the past. From racism to sexism, you can see a bit of everything now and then. From phrases like “[…]if we don’t look out the white race will be—will be utterly submerged. It’s all scientific stuff; it’s been proved” to “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best things a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” deliberately show it. Raw and capturing the true essence of that time.
At one point in the book, I was lost on what was happening. I thought I was the odd one not to understand great literature, but a quick Google search reaffirmed that I was not alone. Thankfully, it was a short book, or else I would’ve had to put it down at some part.
  1. The author 😎
F. Scott Fitzgerald is widely considered to be one of the best American writers of all time. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, he attended Princeton University, and after heartbreak, he dropped out to join the US Army during World War I.
Scott’s great romance and subsequent breakup with Chicago socialite Ginevra King inspired many of his book characters, including Isabelle Borgé in This Side of Paradise and Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby.
His debut novel, This Side of Paradise, brought him fame and success and convinced Scott’s fiance, Zelda Sayre, to resume their engagement and get married. He wrote The Great Gatsby, his magnum opus, in 1925. It was a commercial failure and remained the same until many decades later. Today, it’s considered to be the Great American Novel by many.
  1. Reviews 🤩
Me: 3/5 Goodreads: 3.9/5 Amazon: 4.4/5
