2024.05.20 15:06 moondog151 Terrorista de Nova Iguaçu: In the span of three years four bombs would be set off, two at nightclubs, one at a movie theater and another at a supermarket resulting in 1 death and 18 injuries. According to a note left at one of the crime scenes, the bomber's motive was out of hatred for rock music.
(Nearly a month ago I made this post asking for case suggestions from my international readers since I focus on International cases and I recently was given one which I looked into and saw very few mentions of it online outside of Portuguese Wikipedia, digital newspaper archives and a single forum post. So I decided to take the case on. Oh and that Wikipedia article, about a good portion of it or so also talks about another bombing case that is likely unrelated.)

At 9:45 pm on August 12, 1985, over 2000 people were dancing or socializing at the Mesquita Tênis Club in Nova Iguaçu, located in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro State. The dancing was briefly interrupted by the sound of an explosion from the inside of the club near the stage, no panic broke out avoiding a stampede. There was, however, still a fatality. Elsewhere in the club was the body of a man, his arm had been torn off, his face heavily disfigured, part of his dental arch blasted a great distance away from his body and bits of his brain matter were blown up into and stuck to the ceiling. The blast also injured 15-year-old Claudete Oliveira da Silva, 19-year-old Cláudio Wilson Batista, and 17-year-old Luiz Antônio Oliveira da Silva.
The deceased was identified as a 23-year-old machinist and former goalkeeper named Otacílio Alexandrino Pinheiro, a regular at the club and well-known by the other attendees and staff. Tragically, when his brother was called and informed of the incident, he was in the hospital already as his father had suffered a severe heart attack. Otacílio was standing with a group of friends when the explosion went off, blinding one of them.
While Claudete was recovering in the hospital, she was questioned by police who told them that before the explosion, a man handed Otacílio a handheld radio described as sophisticated and of "foreign origin" and that he brought it to his ear and turned the dial to try and change the channel, the radio exploded once the dial was turned killing him instantly. She described the man who gave him the radio as a middle-aged, short, white male with a mustache, dressed in blue jeans and a checkered shirt and that Otacílio seemed to be friendly with him. Claudete also said that she saw other people witness this and try to chase after the man after the explosion but he managed to escape in the crowd. The bombing led to Otacílio's family protesting outside the club and blaming the lax security for his death as the guards were very selective in who they decided to check and screen.
Eventually, the police made an arrest, Nielsen Barros Louzada, a radio operator for The Civil Police and the son of a former deputy and owner of The Mesquita Football Club, Nielsen Louzada (his middle name isn't stated so they appear to have the same name). They later arrested another man, a painter named Edson dos Santos as Nielsen's accomplice. The police believed that the motive was a rivalry between the two clubs and even went so far as to accuse Otacílio being involved and that he was to place the bomb into the club's sound system but accidentally set it off prematurely. Nielsen's father also came to his defence accusing the police of being corrupt, trying to force him and Edson to confess and stating how none of the witnesses who supposedly got a clear look at the man identified him as Nielsen. He may not have been wrong to think so as the lead detective in this case was dismissed for corruption and gambling-related offenses.
On January 5, 1986, while Nielsen and Edson were on trial at The 4th Criminal Court of Nova Iguaçu, more than three thousand people were attending a concert by Tony Tornado at the Mesquita Football Club. At 10:20 p.m., a homemade bomb went off injuring 8 people including a child and triggering a stampede and panicked rush toward the exits. The injured consisted of Hernandes Freitas Soares, 25 years old, Marita Rodrugies Heriger, 17 years old, Adriana Xavier, Campos, 16 years old, Simone Machado Loureiro, 15 years old, Ana Claudia Costa Silva, 17 years old, Dejair Soares, 18 years old, Jorge Luis Csota Dias, 6 years old, and his uncle Didimo Rodrigues. Lastly during the stampede, 25-year-old João Luis dos Reis was trampled over resulting in minor injuries.
Five minutes after the explosion, three military police units on patrol in the area went past the club and saw that something was happening calling for backup and having the injured sent to two separate hospitals. Investigators faced massive pushback in their investigation as the club wanted to keep the show going at all costs ordering clubgoers to stop fleeing and continue dancing to the music. They unsuccessfully attempted to dispose of any evidence clearing away fragments of metal and cardboard as well as screws and a possible detonator believed to be from the explosive device. They even went so far as to try to deny police entry into the club. One of the injured, Hernandes Freitas Soares was an off-duty police officer. When he showed his ID, the two security guards attacked him and threw him out onto the sidewalk saying "The place to die is on the street."
The police believed that both bombings were linked but not because they were both committed by the same man. They proceeded with their club rivalry theory and that it could've been retaliation to the bombing of the Mesquita Tênis Club. Both victim and suspect denied this theory and stated that now the two of them were scared of future attacks and the owner Nielsen Louzada publically stated that the same man must've been responsible for both attacks. Nonetheless, the police remained steadfast in their theory so they did not re-examine the case and criminal proceedings continued against Nielsen and Edson

At 6:20 pm, a bomb placed under a seat in the fifth row on the right side suddenly went off injuring 17-year-old Alexandra Sabone Massa, 25-year-old Solange Vicente da Silva and 17-year-old Norma Sueli Ventura Santiago. Norma and Alexandra were severely injured as they had been pelted with shrapnel and even nails which had been packed into the device. They required surgery and even skin grafts. The theatre room was calmy evacuated while showings in the other cinemas continued uninterrupted.
The police arrived and recovered the fragments of the device and determined it to be low-powered and a timed device. Although the contents are unknown, there may have been a warning since the management was called from an unknown number. According to other theatregoers, the sound of the explosion was "muffled and muted" Property damage was surprisingly minimal as the seat directly above the bomb was mostly infact. Underneath the seat, investigators found a note written in "maritime signal code" which when translated, read as follows
"This is for you, club directors, to learn not to play only hot music. You also have to remember that slow songs exist. If my demands are not met, the games will continue until you change your mind. This is only the third game. They will continue until you meet my demands, and no security will stop me because I am capable of passing through walls without anyone seeing me. I just want equal time for slow music and not rock. NL"
The injured and witnesses could not give any descriptions and just like with the Mesquita Football Club, police were being met with silence as the manager would not show up to the theatre during investigations and were directly told by his employees that he was avoiding police and the press so he wouldn't have to make any statements. Some even causally dismissed the incident as a prank that had simply gotten people injured by mistake.
The media, however, upon hearing of the note ran with the story that a serial bomber was on the loose motivated purely by his personal music taste. And about that serial bomber "This is only the third game" Police went through other bombing cases and revisted the Mesquita Tênis Club and Mesquita Football Club bombings, both devices were similarly manufactured and used black powder and the initials Nielsen Louzada did match their one suspect, even if he was incarcerated at the time of the other two bombings and Nielsen said his name was planted by his father's politcal enemies. After the news broke, the owner of Mesquita Tênis Club and another club named "Lojas Americanas" came forward saying that in June 1986, they were both given notes written in signals as well. After translating them, the notes that gave the names Paulo Roberto Nunes and Washington Tavares Filho as the sender and the same address contained threats directed toward both clubs for playing rock music. The names were of course false but now there was a connection and Nielsen and Edson were both quietly released.
As a direct response to this bombing, Brazilian Police launched "Operation Macumba" to try and put an end to the sale and manufacture of "tula" and other types of gunpowder used in the bomb or at least severely limit it. On October 8, the police seized approximately 10 kilograms and 450 grams of gunpowder, packaged in 209 cartridges. On October 9th that number had jumped to over 1,021 cartridges with 40 grams of gunpowder each with 8 stores raided. Despite this crackdown, no leads to the identity of the bomber could be uncovered.
The fourth and final confirmed attack would occur on June 29, 1987, at 4:50 pm, the Casas Sendas supermarket was crowded with hundreds of customers when a bag left behind at the customer reception desk suddenly exploded. The explosion started a small fire and led to immense panic with many running, stampeding and others fainting with some thinking the entire building was on the verge of collapse. 20-year-old employee Marinaldo de Sousa Santos, who handled the packages was left with first, second, and third-degree burns and had to undergo several major surgeries. Marinaldo's co-worker, 17-year-old Osvaldo Luís Pereira and Marieta Moreira de Sousa were also injured. At the time of the explosion, few people were in the reception area which saved many lives.
Investigators at the scene collected two small batteries, pieces of wire, a talcum powder can lid, and other materials they believed that the person responsible was knowledgeable in explosives. The subsequent fire was deemed unintentional as discarded nearby to the explosion happened to be a plastic bottle containing flammable alcohol that the person dropping off the explosive package was likely unaware of. The decive again operated based on a timer, was homemade and the composition was highly similar to the last three attacks leading police to link this to the two clubs and the theatre bombing. Police arrested several people with explosive-related criminal records but none of these leads panned out.
Due to always striking in Nova Iguaçu, he was referred to as "Terrorista de Nova Iguaçu".
There was another bomber on the loose around the same time referred to as "The North Zone Maniac" who in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro set off 12 bombs from 1987-1988, mostly in the suburbs but also at a supermarket and a train station The police arrested Elourdes Mendes de Israel as a suspect in "The North Zone Maniac" case but the evidence against him was flimsy and he professed his innocence. Although some think that "Terrorista de Nova Iguaçu" and "The North Zone Maniac" are one and the same, the two have never been conclusively linked and both struck in different locations and had a different choice of targets. Due to the lacklustre evidence and a lack of any updates on Elourdes and his trial, it is presumed that "The North Zone Maniac" has also likely never been caught.

2024.05.19 04:01 Plastic_Bad_7941 I [22M] Told My Friend [24M] I had Feelings For Him and Now He Is Considering Moving... WTF Can I Do?
God I feel so stupid right now but I just need to get this written down. Backstory: I (22M) have a friend (24M) who I have known for about 4 years. We became quick friends over things like trading card games and D&D and just nerdy things in general. Earlier this year we started cuddling because we were both single and felt comfortable with each other. A few weeks later he asked me if I wanted to try a fwb situation, which I was all for. I always thought he was straight, but this changed my whole view for a moment. The next day he told me it wasn't his thing and I was fine with that, and things went back to normal. As the "straight" friend thing usually goes, one night we were both drinking, and one thing led to another, and you get the picture. After that, we didn't discuss it much, but we still cuddled and watched movies together, and he would do small, thoughtful gestures, and I was hoping it was leading somewhere.
He landed in my bed one more time, and afterward, we laid there just talking and relaxing, and I realized I had feelings for him. He is truly an amazing person and very thoughtful and caring and gentle. It felt like a fairy tale for a moment. Well, every damn book has its twists, and ours came in the form of a girl. A few weeks later, everything seems fine, and I come home late from a night at a friends. My housemates had a small get-together of their own, which he was at and had drank way too much and was having a horrible time. They used my room to nurse him back to health, so I spent the night looking after and caring for him, intermittently napping here and there. The next morning, my roommates sister, lets call her Ana, and my friend got very cuddly and friendly and I can honestly say I didn't handle it well and spend this past month brooding and keeping to myself. I avoided the two of them like the plague unless she wasn't around because I didn't want my feelings to affect anything with them or get in the way. I laid in bed every night and fought with myself about it, feeling like trash, trying to get over the feelings.
He has always struggled with his mental health and I saw a great improvement in him throughout this time and that made me happy to see, but those feelings have still been gnawing at me, and I couldn't really discuss it with any of my friends because they all know him and I didn't want to chance outing him to anyone so I kept it to myself until two days ago.
I was having a bad day, and those thoughts just wouldn't leave me along, and he got me alone and asked me to talk about it. I fought with myself but knew I needed to let it out, or else I was going to just keep hurting. I told him I'd had feelings for him and that I'd been struggling with his situation with the girl. I didn't want him to change anything or do anything different, and I reinforced that I wasn't upset with him or her. I was struggling with my own emotions, and it wasn't at all his fault. I made sure he knew that I didn't want any difference in us just being friends, and that he is one of the friends I hold close to me, and no matter what I simply enjoy having him in my life and above anything I want him to be happy.
I noticed a shift in him that night, and he asked for some space, which I happily gave to him. He hasn't been back to the house since, but my house mates just got home from a get-together with him and the girl, and they won't be getting together. They also told me that he is planning to let his house (Which he has been struggling to keep afloat and get off his hands) foreclose and to go on a grippy sock vacation, and ultimately move out to live with some family across the country, and I can't help but blame myself. I'm hurting right now, and shocked, and scared for my friend because I care about him a lot, and no matter what, I don't want to have him out of my life. I don't want to lose a friend over my stupid ass feelings but I don't know what to do. Please, someone, anyone, advice would be great right now. I feel like such an asshole and I don't know what to do.
TLDR: I told my best friend I had feelings for him, and now he might be moving across the country, and I don't know what I can do to salvage the situation.
UPDATE: We talked. He came to drop her off at my house because her sister and I lived together, and him and I went for a walk. I got out all my feelings and told him what my friend told me about what he was considering. He talked to me about his side of things, and it's not as bad as I thought it was. He landed in my bed one more time, and afterward, we laid there just talking and relaxing, and I realized I had feelings for him. He is truly an amazing person and very thoughtful and caring and gentle. It felt like a fairy tale for a moment. Well, every damn book has its twists, and ours came in the form of a girl. A few weeks later, everything seems fine, and I come home late from a night at a friends. My housemates had a small get-together of their own, which he was at and had drank way too much and was having a horrible time. They used my room to nurse him back to health, so I spent the night looking after and caring for him, intermittently napping here and there. The next morning, my roommates sister, lets call her Ana, and my friend got very cuddly and friendly and I can honestly say I didn't handle it well and spend this past month brooding and keeping to myself. I avoided the two of them like the plague unless she wasn't around because I didn't want my feelings to affect anything with them or get in the way. I laid in bed every night and fought with myself about it, feeling like trash, trying to get over the feelings.
He has always struggled with his mental health and I saw a great improvement in him throughout this time and that made me happy to see, but those feelings have still been gnawing at me, and I couldn't really discuss it with any of my friends because they all know him and I didn't want to chance outing him to anyone so I kept it to myself until two days ago.
I was having a bad day, and those thoughts just wouldn't leave me along, and he got me alone and asked me to talk about it. I fought with myself but knew I needed to let it out, or else I was going to just keep hurting. I told him I'd had feelings for him and that I'd been struggling with his situation with the girl. I didn't want him to change anything or do anything different, and I reinforced that I wasn't upset with him or her. I was struggling with my own emotions, and it wasn't at all his fault. I made sure he knew that I didn't want any difference in us just being friends, and that he is one of the friends I hold close to me, and no matter what I simply enjoy having him in my life and above anything I want him to be happy.
I noticed a shift in him that night, and he asked for some space, which I happily gave to him. He hasn't been back to the house since, but my house mates just got home from a get-together with him and the girl, and they won't be getting together. They also told me that he is planning to let his house (Which he has been struggling to keep afloat and get off his hands) foreclose and to go on a grippy sock vacation, and ultimately move out to live with some family across the country, and I can't help but blame myself. I'm hurting right now, and shocked, and scared for my friend because I care about him a lot, and no matter what, I don't want to have him out of my life. I don't want to lose a friend over my stupid ass feelings but I don't know what to do. Please, someone, anyone, advice would be great right now. I feel like such an asshole and I don't know what to do.
TLDR: I told my best friend I had feelings for him, and now he might be moving across the country, and I don't know what I can do to salvage the situation.
UPDATE: We talked. He came to drop her off at my house because her sister and I lived together, and him and I went for a walk. I got out all my feelings and told him what my friend told me about what he was considering. He talked to me about his side of things, and it's not as bad as I thought it was. I started the movie a long time ago, but never finished it. Then I rewatched it fully last week. The first time I watched it, I could have sworn that when the baby is taken, Ana Taylor Joy opens her eyes and looks towards the woods. I remember her vetting a quick glimpse of the witch as it quickly enters the woods. But on rewatch, when she looked, she saw nothing.

Please don’t come for me!! I’m a big fan and collect all her books and will always read them. Please don’t tell me “just don’t read them” the books were very comforting to me at a time I needed them but that doesn’t mean I can’t be open to discussion about her recent work and how her new direction or perhaps rush to put out books might be affecting quality.
I’m part of her Facebook group as well; which is strictly a fan page.

Here goes:
First becomes its top of mind- there are more cameo mentions in this book than any other- including from the Twisted Series. I get happy when I see them but I think sometimes they’re sprinkled in randomly by name only and it’s very fan-service-like. It’s a great way to show how well the characters are doing years after the fact but more detailed scenes would make sense because yes, the AH fans love cameos.
Jule’s name was tossed around as a lawyer handling some of Xavier’s things but in the future I hope AH writes more compelling small cameo mentions, otherwise we’ll get conversations like “I have to go, I have a doctor’s appointment…Dr.Josh Chen, haven’t you heard, he’s the most up and coming doctor in town ! I had to practically beg Christian Harper to get me an appointment.”
But for the main characters: I guess I expected Sloane to be a character who looked like Bridget but with the personality of Jules. Instead she behaved exactly like Allesandra, Isabel and Vivian. Speaking of Bridget, the bubbly Queen of Eldora was more icy than Sloane (the series' designated Ice Queen) and she was supposed to be Rhy's sunny counterpart. We were constantly TOLD how icy and emotionless she was and never really shown it. Instead, we find out she's actually insecure and has a lot of issues, which yes is realistic to how Ice Queens typically form their avoidant personalities, but it would have been great to see a few chapters of her being icy before we peel the layers and find out why she puts up these icy walls.
If the book was supposed to be about how she’s NOT the ice queen people think she is…that wasn’t exactly shown either. She does admit it herself that she is icy, just hates that she is and hates being called that.
Xavier is the Jojo Siwa of bad boys. He was a bad boy, he did some bad things. The things that made him Colombia’s biggest bad boy with a bad boy reputation known all over the word: Parties with other rich kids, spends his wealthy father’s money, refuses to behave at publicity events like galas, refuses to inherit his family’s company, gets into shenanigans that land him in a night in jail with other rich kids, got a tattoo of his family rival’ crest….this one’s more stupid than “sticking it to his family”, slept around with whether model/It Girl was around. In the words of Phoebe Buffay “Okay, who hasn’t?!” Even Jules, Ava and Stella have landed themselves in jail after some shenanigan gone wrong. It’s clear that despite being a “spicy” book, AH created a Disney character version of a bad boy.
I feel like Ana forgot how to write from the male's POV after the Twisted series ended. The point of the dual POV is that you feel like you're reading two different people's POV, and honestly it all just blends together. I think Josh's book (Twisted Hate) was the best example of a male's perspective and thoughts/dialogue that a guy in that situation would be saying.
I noticed since King of Greed at least, these Alpha males have been carrying dialogue that mention the most ridiculous things that "Alpha billionaire" males wouldn't even notice. Example: In King of Greed, when Dominic makes a comment about the expression a Chinese food delivery person makes when he realizes he just dropped off a ton of food for two people.....I think that was an Ana Huang thought, not a Domenic thought. While we’re at it, Domenic was just as bad a Xavier…. Dante was the last good “Alpha” she wrote and Kai was such a different character (modeled clearly after the lead in Crazy Rich Asians) that he was hard to mess up ..
The Spanish in King of Sloth was important given the character's background, but felt like it was written with Google Translate. It felt very formal and boring, and doesn't feel like a Spanish-language consultant was brought in to make sure the random sentences and random Spanish words made sense. It was giving the same energy as the Netflix original shows that are set in Los Angeles neighborhoods and the writer's idea of Spanglish is sprinkling random Spanish words into English sentences. There was a little Spanish dialogue in Twisted Games that was way less cringier- maybe because the Spanish was in full sentences and then translated right after….. Latino English speaking people don’t add random “Tios” or “hermano” to their sentences. Look up @Leogonzall “how Latinos talk in movies” videos to see a visual representation of how the Spanish dialogue in these books feel.
Some random things that appear in every single book: - "A thought niggling......" - A table groaning under the weight of food - The first kiss consists of the male's mouth "crashing" into the female's - Every single female character has parental and sibling issues of some sort. - Every male character has parental/abusive parents of some sort. I'm beginning to feel like AH cannot write complex characters that don't rely solely on parental drama, as relatable as it can be...not counting her "If Love..." series, we've seen this 7 times in a row, for EACH main character. So twice per book, for 7 books ! Formulas are one thing, but copy and pasting is another.

- Ana Huang writes parents and siblings the way Amy Sherman-Palladino writes children in Gilmore Girls, just very one-dimensional and for the plot.
- Except for Isabel's good relationship with one of her brothers, Alessandra (and Ava and Josh) every female character has severe sibling drama, usually a case where their sibling is an over-achiever and conforms to their parent's expectations (and that's horrifying because it affects the main character and not because that sibling is also a victim that may have used conformity to survive their abusive parents actions)
- How she started her PR agency and the staff she hires- what a girl boss! We only get a vague background about how she started her agency but nothing about how she built experience prior, and how she managed to build a reputation to become one of the best PR agencies in the world. We just have to take the author's word for it, and there's been so much build-up of Sloane in the three previous books. She’s extremely well connected and good at her job- but we get zero background about how she got there except that she worked hard, and came from a rich family.
- I always imagined Sloane having a luxury apartment in NYC, something completely immaculate and stone-cold and awesome like her personality. We hear nothing about her apartment despite so many scenes taking place there.
- We didn't get that many scenes of Sloane doing anything by herself…anything she cool she eats or wears or anything. I feel we got more of these smaller details about the heroines in the earlier books. At least we had a few scenes of Stella eating croissants and green smoothies- it was cute ! ☺️
- I think Sloane got the Stella treatment- Both heroines's have been teased since the first book in the series but were a bit lackluster once the book came out.
- I really like that AH gives her characters a signature scent/flavor- I think Vivian was described smelling like apples, Alessandra smelled like lilies and rain or something. I can’t recall the others. She also gives certain “elements” to characters- like Sloane being pale like the moon, icy, etc. Christian Harper was like whiskey and fire, etc.
- The world building in NYC and DC and other countries.
- the friendships and the conversations between the girls.
- I love the scenes that take place in both DC and NYC - they feel so cosmopolitan but I feel we no longer get smaller details about the weather, street details, etc - we got plenty more of this in Twisted Hate and Twisted Games...even details about it being a misty or cold day, make a huge difference in creating imagery in the reader's mind.
- The Valhalla scenes are typically entertaining and beautifully written, it's clear how lovely and gorgeous this country club is.
- Any cameos where Alex shows up, are well-written. I think Twisted Love was one of her strongest books, so it makes sense he's one of her strongest characters who is stable and can carry any appearance.

I know that Taylor made a donation to the victim who was killed at the Chief’s parade. Well, not a lot to her but $100,000. So it’s nice but considering her billionaire status, not that impressive. It’s like $1 to her lol. On the flip side, she gave Ana Clara Benevides family…concert tix?!?!
She really could have done something impactful for Ana’s family…like start a scholarship fund for a student from Brazil in Ana’s name, start a foundation. The swifties all got together and had a go fund me to fly Ana’s body back to her family. Taylor did not donate.
With the absorbent amount of wealth Taylor has- like- it will be impossible for her to ever spend it in her lifetime- I can’t understand why she hordes it, wants more, and just can’t help people. I know it’s not her responsibility but for example Madonna has the Ray of Light Foundation, Lady Gaga has the Born this way foundation, Beyoncee has the BeyGOOD None of them are billionaires. Even Olivia Rodrigo- who Taylor is stealing money from right now to contribute to her billionaire status- has started a charity called “Fund 4 Good” as well as Billie Eilish having The Fender Play Foundation.
I remember Britney had that theater camp for underprivileged kids which strangely, Taylor was also in attendance as a child 🤣
I can’t wrap my brain around the fact that Taylor does not do anything like this. She was Time’s “Person of the Year” and she…complained about Kim Kardashian first half the article, complained that football fans don’t like her in the rest, as well as quoted the movie Gladiator 🤣 (“Are you not entertained?” and this is the person of the year? Who has nothing interesting to say?
I know she donates here and there but she would be really impactful actually running an organization to help others.

I know it’s not her responsibility but for example Madonna has the Ray of Light Foundation, Lady Gaga has the Born this way foundation, Beyoncee has the BeyGOOD None of them are billionaires. Even Olivia Rodrigo- who Taylor is stealing money from right now to contribute to her billionaire status- has started a charity called “Fund 4 Good” as well as Billie Eilish having The Fender Play Foundation.
I remember Britney had that theater camp for underprivileged kids which strangely, Taylor was also in attendance as a child 🤣
I can’t wrap my brain around the fact that Taylor does not do anything like this. She was Time’s “Person of the Year” and she…complained about Kim Kardashian first half the article, complained that football fans don’t like her in the rest, as well as quoted the movie Gladiator 🤣 (“Are you not entertained?” and this is the person of the year? Who has nothing interesting to say?

Probably somebody who is fluent in Japanese and English would be better to analyze this movie but I will try anyway.
The movie is about poor communication and disconnection. Originally I thought it was just describing culture shock and the overload of being in a foreign country. But there are numerous examples of “lost in translation” as a metaphor. Watching Bill Murray (Bob) view an old SNL skit in Japanese is a bit surreal. When Bob is trying to finish a commercial shoot the translator gives him short instructions to a lengthy response from the director. When some fans recognize him drinking at a bar Bob just smiles and walks away.
Both main characters are in unhappy and disconnected relationships. Giovanni Ribisi plays a busy photographer who gives little attention to (Charlotte) Scarlett Johansen. Later Charlotte goes to a Buddhist temple and watches a ceremony. When trying to describe her lack of feeling about it to her mother back in the states Charlotte becomes tearful and this ends the call abruptly.
There is not a lot of dialogue overall in the movie. But one person who does talk incessantly is Giovanni Ribisi’s ex played by Ana Faris. Her character is quite vapid and annoying. This is to contrast the main characters who are insular and contemplative.
What does Bob say at the end of the movie? Well I can’t read lips. But we are supposed to fill in the blanks since the movie is at its core about difficulty communicating, especially in relationships.
