2024.05.22 04:35 secret-russian-spy UW-Madison vs Northeastern Law--Having second thoughts on my choice

I posted this over on lawschooladmissions but I feel like this sub might give better advice. I am looking for thoughts/opinions on both of these schools. I have already paid my seat deposit for NU back in April and only found out about my acceptance to UW-Madison about a week ago(and their seat deposit is due tomorrow so they've put me in an awkward position). I am largely interested in going into public service or government work, so NU does seem like a good fit for me. I went to NU's admitted students day and was impressed by the co op program, as I graduated undergrad in 2021 and have already been working for three years so experiential learning is important to me. I also really enjoyed talking with the students I met there. However, UW-Madison is ranked #36 compared to NU's #68. Based on my stats, I feel lucky to have been accepted at UW-Madison and want to give it full consideration before I decide to change course when I've been planning on going to NU for the last month. I've asked several people I know in the legal field and most of them have just tried to tell me that Madison is a cooler city than people give it credit for. That's nice, but it doesn't tell me much about the school itself, or what my employment options will look like after graduation. So I thought I'd ask on here and hope that any current students or alumni from either school might share their thoughts. I've added more details below:
My main requirements when applying to law school were that the school 1) is either in Washington DC or a capital city the state it's located 2) has public policy/government concentrations, clinics, or externships available and 3) has international programs. The last one was just a personal thing for me because my juniosenior year in undergrad were wrecked by Covid and I never got to study abroad. I also would like to explore the options that US attorneys have to work internationally(I know those options are few, you don't need to tell me that.)
Both schools meet all three requirements. NU has co ops in cities all over the world and some of them are perfectly aligned with my interest areas. UW-Madison has some excellent exchange programs but not as many as NU, and I definitely don't have any intention to work in WI/IL/MN or even Chicago. My ultimate goal is to work in DC and based on employment stats it seems that roughly the same number of grads from both schools end up doing so. But if I had to choose a city to work in after law school, I'd probably choose Boston over Madison.
I've been told that outside of t14 schools, location matters more than ranking. If that's true I think I should stick with NU. Then there's the issue of cost. Madison is a less expensive city but because I would need to bring my car and pay to park it it that would be an added cost. Also, if location of the school would lock me into living in Madison or the Midwest for 8 years instead of 3, I think I'd rather pay the extra money. But if I could graduate from UW-Madison, save some money, and get a job in DC in a year or less, then I think that would be okay.
A school's culture also matters to me, and while I visited NU I didn't have the time to visit Madison before having to make a decision. UW-Madison seems like a very relaxed school with a strong community, but the city seems boring and small(no offense to any that love it!). I liked NU when I visited, but I have seen some posts on this sub and others about people who did not like it there at all. I'm also having second thoughts about the "non-traditional" nature of the school. They don't have GPA or rankings, and I'm wondering if the co op schedule will interfere with my ability to participate in OCIs or have Summer Associate Jobs. Before my UW offer, this wasn't really a concern because I was deciding between NU with a scholly or another school with none. Now I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of a non-traditional track or a traditional one.
Sorry for the long post. I'm just a first-gen college/law student who's feeling overwhelmed, especially since UW-Madison basically left me with no time to decide this. Anyway, I appreciate any thoughts from this group on the Location vs Ranking debate, or any perspectives from current students or alumni from either school. And best of luck to those who are still trying to make these tough decisions like me!

2024.05.22 04:16 DCdentistrty The Difference Between Cosmetic and General Dentistry

The Difference Between Cosmetic and General Dentistry
Understanding the difference between cosmetic and general dentistry can help you make informed decisions about your dental care. While both aim to maintain and enhance your oral health, they serve different purposes. If you're in Washington, DC, knowing which type of dental service you need can guide you to the right professional, whether it's the Center For Cosmetic Dentistry or a [DC Dentist].

General Dentistry: The Foundation of Oral Health

General dentistry focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of dental issues. Services provided by a DC Dentist include routine check-ups, cleanings, fillings, and root canals. These procedures are essential for maintaining overall oral health and preventing serious dental problems. At the [Center For Cosmetic Dentistry], we also emphasize the importance of regular general dental care as a foundation for any cosmetic treatments.

Cosmetic Dentistry: Enhancing Your Smile

Cosmetic dentistry, on the other hand, is all about improving the appearance of your teeth and smile. Procedures such as teeth whitening, veneers, and dental bonding fall under this category. The Center For Cosmetic Dentistry specializes in these aesthetic treatments, offering solutions that enhance the beauty of your smile. Whether you need minor adjustments or a complete smile makeover, our Washington, DC practice provides customized cosmetic services to meet your needs.

Overlapping Areas: When Cosmetic Meets General

There are instances where cosmetic and general dentistry overlap. For example, a filling for a cavity can be done with tooth-colored materials, blending the functionality of general dentistry with the aesthetics of cosmetic dentistry. Similarly, crowns used in general dentistry for restoring damaged teeth can be designed to look natural and match your existing teeth. At the Center For Cosmetic Dentistry, our DC Dentist ensures that all treatments not only improve oral health but also contribute to a pleasing smile.

Choosing the Right Dental Service

Determining whether you need cosmetic or general dental services depends on your specific dental needs. If you're looking to maintain your oral health, regular visits to a DC Dentist for cleanings and check-ups are essential. However, if you're looking to enhance your smile, visiting the Center For Cosmetic Dentistry in Washington, DC can provide you with specialized cosmetic treatments tailored to your goals.

Conclusion

Whether you need general dental care or cosmetic enhancements, understanding the difference between these two branches of dentistry can help you choose the right services. If you're in Washington, DC, contact the Center For Cosmetic Dentistry or your local DC Dentist to discuss your dental needs. Call us today to schedule an appointment and take the first step toward a healthier, more beautiful smile.

2024.05.22 04:13 BlueHorseshoe001 28 [M4F]: Washington, DC or Online: Looking for something, fun, friendly and genuine with a nice down-to-earth girl. Bonus points if you're Jewish.

Hey there,
I’m looking for a nice girl to chat with about anything and everything. I don’t have any expectations for where this goes, but pleasant, friendly regular conversation would be the ideal starting point. Let’s start there and just follow the energy. As for format, I’m good with messaging and phone calls initially.
Nothing is off limits for our conversation. Fitness, wellness, relationships, music, travel, whiskey, wine, pain, pleasure, art, success, setbacks, literature… this barely scratches the surface but I hope it gives you an idea of the breadth of topics that I want to explore with you.
About me: ENTJ, pretty conservative politically and otherwise, Jewish, very active (lifting, tennis, walking/running), and a career in financial/investment services. There’s a lot more to me than this, but this seems like a fair start.
Please include your age, sex and favorite musical artist in your first message.

2024.05.22 04:04 vchervenkov Why does bottled still water come without a cap?

Why does bottled still water come without a cap?
Is this a scam? I went out to eat at The Patio at Hotel Washington in Washington DC. The waiter asked us if we wanted water and I said yes. We ordered both sparkling and still. He comes back with a bottled and capped sparkling water and an already opened still water. Right away this reminded me of a dining experience I had in Manhattan New York’s Little Italy where I was served two of these bottles for $7 each as Panna water. Some of the bottles had no labels, all had no caps, and I was convinced they were refilled with water that wasn’t Acqua Panna. My question is why wouldn’t a nice place like this serve the Panna bottle with a bottle cap. It’s a twist to open just like the sparkling water. We ended up paying $10 for the two bottles and it tasted like the real deal and the bottle looked new but just overall odd to me why one comes out with a cap and the other doesn’t.

2024.05.22 03:31 its_sandraaa Seo In Guk’s US fan meeting - SCAM?

Dear Reddit community,
I am posting here as I was one of the fans who purchased a ticket for Seo In Guk’s fan meeting event in the US, scheduled for May 23rd in Washington DC and with a date also in LA. The event was cancelled due to “visa issues” allegedly just a couple of days prior to happening- the company Konnected, after several emails and messages via dedicated form, has never gotten back to me to provide a refund. The event hasn’t been rescheduled and they disappeared.
Fraud? Also, anybody else facing this situation?
For context: tickets ranged from $30 to $300+ and most of us had to pay for transportation and also for accommodation, so it would be good to get at least the money for the event back (since it never happened).

2024.05.22 02:50 Rich_Antelope7100 Lesser known facts about the OJ Simpson murder case

Denise Pilnak was a neighbor of Nicole’s. Her telephone bill shows she was on the phone from 10:25 PM and 10:28 PM. Prior to making this phone call, she and her friend noted how quiet the neighborhood was. Several minutes later between 10:33 and 10:35 PM, she testified that’s when she began to hear the sound of a barking dog, which is likely when the murders began. Allan Park testified to seeing OJ near the front door of the Rockingham estate at 10:55 PM, and his telephone records also document that. That leaves less than 25 minutes to commit the murders, drive back home, get rid of the evidence, etc.
Both Nicole and Ron had defensive wounds. Ron in particular was in hand to hand combat with whoever killed him, yet OJ had no injuries. The cut on his finger wasn’t seen by anyone who interacted with him at the airport, on the airplane ride to Chicago, nor when he immediately landed in Chicago. This includes people who got autographs from him, shook hands with him, and observed his hands. A broken glass was also found in his hotel room and it was documented he asked for a bandage at the hotel.
The FBI searched all of OJ’s and Nicole's credit card records and there was never any receipt found belonging to either of them that showed a purchase of Bruno Magli shoes. Every store that sold the shoes in the country was also searched, and they couldn't find anyone who sold him the shoes. The only proof of him owning them are the National Enquirer photos, which show him wearing suede shoes on a very rainy day. It was also found that the shoe soles that were said to be OJ's footprint were actually more popular than the prosecution maintained, the manufacturer sold the pattern to numerous shoe lines.
1.5 millimeters of OJ’s blood went missing from its vial. Thanos Peratis, the nurse who withdrew his blood, initially testified that he withdrew 8 millimeters. He took that back when only 6.5 appeared and the prosecution suggested he was mistaken. About a decade later he admitted to William Dear that he was certain he withdrew 8 millimeters because it was the amount he had drawn from patients all of his career, but he was close to retirement and had health problems so he didn’t want to cause any trouble.
The glove found at Bundy contained none of OJ’s DNA. The other glove found at Rockingham only contained his DNA in the area where Collin Yamauchi testified to spilling OJ's reference blood sample while handling it.
An identical knit cap matching the knit cap found lying on the ground next to one of the gloves was found in Nicole’s house. Those caps likely belonged to Sydney and Justin Simpson.
Two different people, John Meraz and William Blasini, encountered the Bronco at the lot where it had been impounded days after the murders. They both looked inside it for blood and testified they saw none. There was also only 1/8th of one drop of blood ever found inside it.
New York Times best selling author and journalist Stephen Singular was connected by an anonymous source within the LAPD about the case a few weeks after the murders. He was told Mark Fuhrman made an undocumented trip to Rockingham in the early morning hours after the murders looking for evidence that would incriminate OJ. Rosa Lopez, a housekeeper for OJ’s next door neighbor, testified to hearing men’s voices coming from the yard of Rockingham in the early morning.
The source told Singular that Fuhrman used a broken piece of fence from Bundy to pick up one of the two gloves found and placed it in a blue plastic bag. Next, he was told Fuhrman removed the glove from the plastic bag and planted it at Rockingham. A broken piece of fence was eventually found at Bundy and a blue plastic bag was found at Rockingham, and both were introduced as evidence in the trial.
He was also told EDTA would be found in some of the blood evidence if tested, lab technicians had mishandled OJ’s blood samples, vials of OJ’s, Nicole’s, and Ron's blood were in possession of an LAPD detective for several hours before being booked into evidence, and that Fuhrman had been acquainted with Nicole in some way.
Singular relayed this information from the source to the defense team and was in communication with them for awhile. Pretty much all of it checked out, including an investigation conducted by the LAPD's Internal Affairs Division which revealed that Fuhrman was overheard by other LAPD officers bragging about being intimate with Nicole and seeing her boob job before she was murdered.
There were 17 fingerprints lifted from the Bundy crime scene that didn’t belong to OJ or any of the police officers involved in the case.
Brett Cantor ran a nightclub called The Dragonfly where Ron worked for him as a waitepromoter. Nicole was also a regular at the club. He was murdered a year before them in almost exactly the same way, by being stabbed repeatedly in the upper body and being nearly decapitated. Judge Ito ruled the defense team could review his case. His murder remains unsolved.
Casimir Sucharski, a friend of OJ's, was murdered alongside two female companions in his house in Florida by people with machine guns two weeks after Ron and Nicole were murdered.
Michael Nigg was friends with Ron and also worked at the Mezzaluna restaurant. He was murdered a year later in 1995 by being shot in the head after refusing to give his money to two men outside an ATM. The men who shot him didn't end up taking his money. His murder remains unsolved.
Not saying these murders are necessarily related to each other but it does make you wonder since all of these people reportedly led similar lifestyles which involved the use of cocaine. Faye Resnick, a cocaine addict, was also living with Nicole just days before the murders.
If you listen to the full 1993 911 call, OJ was mostly yelling about drugs and hookers being in the house. When police officers responded to the call, Nicole told the responding officers that OJ hadn’t hit her in four years. After the 1989 domestic violence incident, OJ added an addendum to their prenuptial agreement which stated that if he struck Nicole again, she would‘ve been entitled to a settlement of more than 5 million dollars.
OJ wasn't scheduled to be in LA during that week. He had been busy working and made a last minute decision to come back for Sydney's recital. Video taken of him afterwards shows him in a good mood, kissing his kids and the Brown’s goodbye.
Christian Reichardt spoke with OJ on the phone an hour before the murders and testified his demeanor was jovial and not indicative of a simmering murderous rage.
His telephone records also show he made phone calls trying to set up dates with a few models, one of which he told he was unattached to anyone. If he was in a jealous rage over Nicole, why was he trying to date other women?
After the bodies were discovered, Sydney told the police she heard her mommy (Nicole) fighting & crying with her best friend (Faye Resnick) on the phone earlier that night.
Sydney was planning to have a sleepover that night with one of her friends. According to family and friends who attended the recital and dinner, OJ was aware of this. Committing a murder with all those extra witnesses and the possibility of having the kids hurt or things getting out of control, in addition to having a flight to catch, doesn’t make sense.

2024.05.22 02:10 Knalxz I think one thing people don't understand about the destruction of Shady Sand's and the NCR falling apart is how modern society is an outlier to how human civilization has been for thousands of years.

Only in about the last 200 years maybe has a nation's capital not been the most important city. It's where damn near everything important is done, where majority of the ruling class/leader lives and a massive point of pride. Throughout the vast majority of human history, if a capital has fallen, then the nation almost instantly fractures because X person of Y land sees a chance to power grab and does so.
Today, if Washington DC got nuked, the rest of America will be upset but it doesn't fold like Mr. Boss's finger in his paper clip example. In our modern times we've made sure that stuff doesn't happen and I think when people have the idea of what the NCR towards the coast was like, they think of a very modern society who've totally washed away with any of the troubles of the wasteland, not what they are, an attempt to maintain some form of control in a network of tribes who don't really want it. The legion is the same way but more aggressive. The moment Caesar's dead they'll fracture too because he like Sandy Sand's is to the NCR is their beacon, their rallying cry and their entire system of ruling. This is yet another system that has been proven to fallout (Heh) when that source is gone.
Neither to Legion nor NCR is safe from damnation because they have too many of their eggs in one fragile basket, it's just that for the NCR, it was a place, while for The Legion it was a person. Nouns, nouns truly rule the world is what I think I'm getting out here without even meaning too.
Now to be clear, I don't think the NCR is totally destroyed, I just think like in a situation when Caesar dies that what the Legion/NCR is becomes significantly reduced. Each faction is in their golden age and when their noun is removed, they're going to slow crawl back down to a more manageable state. Many people might still call themselves NCR but the chain holding the various groups together was cut.

2024.05.22 01:43 karikocc Question regarding in-person visit at Washington DC Embassy for resident permit application

Hi all,
I just received an email today from Migrationsverket requesting an in-person visit to the Washington DC Embassy within 30 days. However, I cannot find any information on how/where to book an appointment, or if drop-in visits are allowed in the email they sent. I wonder if anyone knows any of those information? Also, if drop-in visits (for non-Swedish) are allowed, is there a day of the week with a specific time slot that is designated for that?
Thank you all for your time and help.
