Hello everyone, I am moving to canada this year end. I intend to move to a place where there is a possibility of buying a house at a comparatively lower rate. From outside canada, I was able to research that the houses in Edmonton, AB are not as high as that in Ontario/Calgary/BC. Also, let me tell you about myself - I easily feel homesick, so I got to live in a city with indians, things to do as a family, places to eat Indian cuisine. I also have a kid and a spouse, so want to live in a safe, low crime city area, with average to highly rated school districts. Weatherwise, I have always lived in countries with high temperatures, although I dont enjoy hot weather. I think I might be able to adjust to a cold, but it should not be with a lot of cold winds.
For a person like me, Would you recommend Edmonton as a safe place to live for family?

I have an assignment for school, the political action assignment. I talked to my professor and the political action can be just influencing policies, such as in school. I have a few policy issues I want to use for this assignment by writing a letter to someone in the position to change it. It would either be related to school lunches, because having the same size lunches for kindergartners and HS bothers me and causes food waste. Or it was going to be focused on changing the credit requirements to graduate HS(to include more useful life skills classes). Both brought up/suggested by teacher. Who would I contact as the political action assignment that has power? Would it be at the district level or state level?

For some background I work in a non union state, I have my degree in 8-12 English, I currently work as a suspension teacher, and I've been working in different school settings/ages for almost 10 years.
Today was the first time I've ever had to leave work early for a reason related to my job. I have spent nearly this entire year trying to to keep my colleagues from falling apart due to severe behavior from students in the classroom. I have tried to keep as positive of an attitude as I can while also venting frustrations. Today I became the one that fell apart.
What makes it worse is that this wasn't even the worst behavior I've dealt with this year. I have had furniture thrown, students physically push me, and been called every name in the book. Today I was disrespected for two hours and had a student leave the room without permission. It doesn't sound that bad on paper, but it broke something inside of me to be completely disrespected and disregarded by a 13 year old whom I had done nothing but try and help for two days.
I work really hard to form relationships with the kids that come into my room because they are typically the trouble makers. It makes my life easier when they know what to expect from me and I also like trying to help them and be a safe person they can come to. I have multiple students who come by just to check in or talk throughout the day because I've worked so much at setting expectations for them.
But today when I was crying in the staff lounge, trying to get it together, I was told that student that had disrespected me would not be sent home because they have a difficult parent. What are we doing?? Why is this happening?
When are these parents going to wake up and realize they are ruining their children's prospects for any kind of a future? We can't send certain kids home on OSS because they want to be there so they can run wild or be attached to a screen all day. We've had kids repeatedly bring drugs into school, deface school property, threaten teachers, and constantly get into physical altercations. I live in a smaller district and know these issues aren't new, but for us they are. Our community prides itself on being supportive and close knit, but then threaten to sue the school and anyone that dares to reprimand their children.
Is this just the collapse of public education and potentially the education system in general? I'm sorry but these kids are going to end up being homeless, jobless, and imprisoned. They can't write, read, perform basic math skills, have a normal conversation with an adult, and they are always the victim.
I'm not quitting my job because surprisingly I love it most days. But I am so tired of no one taking us seriously and being the punching bags for our of control parents and their offspring.

A proposed tax on high-value real estate transactions to pay for affordable housing would add an estimated 3,210 affordable homes in Massachusetts over five years, according to the governor’s administration – a drop in the bucket of the state’s 200,000 housing unit shortage.
Despite only adding about 1.6% of the units needed to chip away at housing demand, the policy may be causing a delay in one of the biggest bills lawmakers are poised to tackle this session, which includes other proposed policies and capital funds that may do more for the state’s housing shortage.
Healey’s $4.1 billion housing bond bill – which she is marketing as the largest-ever state investment in housing in Massachusetts – includes the tax policy change in an outside section that would clear the way for additional local levies on property sales without any additional approval needed from Beacon Hill.
Under the proposed local option, any city, town or regional affordable housing commission can adopt a real estate transfer fee between 0.5% and 2% on the portions of a sale above a certain amount with a vote of their local legislative body. The threshold would be either $1 million or the median single-family home sales price for the county, whichever is greater. Revenue from the transfer tax would fund local affordable housing efforts and the preservation of existing public housing stock.
The administration’s estimate that this policy could generate 3,210 affordable housing units over five years is based on an assumption that 50% of Massachusetts’ cities and towns would adopt a 1% tax, then put that money toward subsidizing housing at about $350,000 per unit.
Based on fiscal 2022 transactions, the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities found that 53 municipalities in central and western Massachusetts had zero transactions above the $1 million threshold. Another 96 municipalities would have raised less than $100,000 in FY22 for each 1% levied.
Eighty-four communities could have raised over $1 million in fiscal year 2022 with a transfer tax, including a dozen between $5 million and $10 million. Revere and Somerville could have raised $10 million to $12 million, Cambridge $28 million and Boston $70 million for affordable housing with a 1% levy.
At least 11 cities and towns – Boston, Somerville, Cambridge, Arlington, Amherst, Chatham, Concord, Nantucket, Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet – have sent the Legislature home rule petitions seeking permission to launch real estate transfer fees. Supporters say the measure is desperately needed to help more people to be able to afford to live and work in those communities.
Another policy included in Healey’s housing bill to authorize accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, by right in single-family zoning districts, would produce more than three times the amount of units across the state, compared to the transfer tax.
Supporters say ADUs, which are smaller buildings or apartments on the same property as a single-family home, offer additional housing for larger families with adult children or older parents, but they can be difficult to get permitted in some communities.
Officials said that based on adoption rates in New Hampshire and California, the permitting reform could lead to production of as many as 10,000 units in Massachusetts in five years. The bill includes other policies meant to spur housing production – including setting a new simple majority voting threshold for inclusionary zoning ordinances and creating a streamlined process for dispensing state land toward housing purposes – as well as unlocking over $4 billion to support production, preservation and rehabilitation of more than 65,000 homes, according to Healey’s office.
Still, House Speaker Ron Mariano indicated last week the controversial real estate transfer tax has slowed down deliberations on the bill that Healey filed over seven months ago.
Mariano said the transfer tax is “not as popular as I thought it might be” within his chamber.
“I’ve been listening to a lot of members. A lot of comments about the taxation issue, around the transfer tax. And so it’s slowed me down a lot,” the speaker told reporters last week. “I’m gonna have to really weigh the measure of where that would, what would happen in the chamber if we brought that up.”
The News Service asked Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll for a reaction to the speaker’s comments about the transfer tax as she left the Mass Union of Public Housing Tenants lobby day on Monday morning.
“I mean, we really support the affordable homes bill, all of the policy provisions that are in it, and we look forward to working with leadership and frankly everybody in the delegation to try and get it over the goal line,” she responded.
Asked how she would pitch the transfer tax to representatives who may not be on board, Driscoll noted that the policy is local-option, so cities and towns would not be forced to enact the new tax.
“We think it’s a real tool for local communities who want to be able to invest in affordable housing within their boundaries,” she said. “Having these resources is critical to that, and we frankly really appreciate the flexibility that communities will have to choose to accept this transfer fee. It will be a local option for cities and towns.”
Housing and Livable Communities Secretary Ed Augustus emphasized that revenue generated from the transfer fee could also be used to preserve existing housing.
“We think it’s an important tool, and today we’re talking to public housing tenants,” Augustus said in an interview after the Monday morning Mass Union of Public Housing Tenants event. “We specifically said in the legislation that communities that decided to opt into a transfer fee would spend it on affordable housing creation, preservation or public housing. And we see in some communities that there are great partnerships with their local public housing, and they make capital investments ... So we think it can also be a way to preserve and improve the public housing stock in communities through the transfer fee.”
Senate President Karen Spilka sidestepped a question this weekend over whether she supports a local option transfer tax. Spilka, asked in a television interview whether she supports Healey’s pitch to allow municipalities to impose the real estate transfer fee, said her chamber is “still debating it.”
“The housing bill hasn’t even come to the Senate yet. The House is doing it first,” Spilka said on WCVB’s “On The Record,” which aired Sunday. “We are working on some pieces, but I think that we need to look at whatever we do with the eye of ensuring that we continue to build housing in every corner of the state and make it more affordable for residents.”
Spilka, asked by OTR host Sharman Sacchetti whether the $1 million threshold for the transfer tax proposal was “set too low” considering the volume of Massachusetts homes that are worth more than that amount, did not directly answer.
“That will be a big discussion and debate among the senators, so I’m waiting to hear from the Senate,” Spilka said. “We haven’t had that debate and discussion yet, so we’ll see.”

I am a RINO - I'll admit it to anyone. I believe the only way to be an effective voter is to register as a Republican or you do not get to participate in the races that matter. In reality - I am pretty moderate.
That being said - I am doing my homework to see who to vote for tonight. The three races on my Republican ballot that are contested are US Rep District 2, County Commissioner Districts 1 and 3.
Every candidate on the ballot is extreme. I do not see evidence of anyone who is willing to look across the isle and shake hands. So much emphasis on the border - which is thousands of miles south of here and a subject politicians are using to deter the attention away from something that matters.
Noone is talking about the cost of healthcare or housing. There are a few candidates that talk about the deficit. Sean Higgins mentioned term limits so I guess I will vote for him, although the rest of his schpeel makes me cringe.
I am a business owner with 13 employees and the cause of inflation is the cost of housing. My employees can't work for $20/hr. Would you if it didn't pay your bills? I wouldn't either. If I try to raise my prices to give everyone a raise - I have an empty schedule and no work for anyone. The situation is really sad at times, seems hopeless

I'm probably wrong about this, but my gut instinct tells me there isn't a teacher shortage at all.
Years ago during the Great Recession, there were barely any teaching jobs at all and the career fairs were loaded with would-be teachers trying to grab the few spots available. All of these were people who already were certified. A lot of my friends who tried during this time ended up pursuing careers elsewhere because there weren't any spots.
I think the answer is that they now have a shortage of people willing to put up with the abuse that teachers deal with day in and day out. A decade ago I would always have a few students who would say that they dreamed of being a teacher one day. Now every student is like "not a chance, that job is for crazy people."
There's probably a bunch of teaching certified people who are working anything but teaching because the schools have become a meat grinder that chews up newbies and spits them out regularly. Think of all the talent that gets wasted because an admin is on a power trip or a district/state can't get its act together with addressing behaviors from students/parents.
If there truly is a shortage, I don't think that districts are actually doing anything to remedy the cause of the shortage. If anything, they are running in the direction that drives more and more teachers away each year, and puts the remaining people in a really awful position.

Good afternoon!
To all my fellow Ithaca residents, please make sure to take to the polls today, to vote in the Ithaca City School District Board of Education election. If you believe in public education, making sure our students, teachers and support staff are getting the resources and tools they need to thrive and succeed, you will make time to get to the pools, between 12pm and 9pm. If you don’t have access to transportation, I am happy to transport folks (send me a message on Facebook or email)
As many of you know, I spent 6 years on the Board of Education, until I made the difficult decision to resign two years ago. After receiving many Facebook messages, text messages, and phone calls in the past 24 hours from friends and community members asking me who they should vote for and if they should vote yes/no to the budget, I have decided to share my thoughts publicly so I can get back to my 9-5 job for the day . As a single mom of three and a homeowner, I empathize with the sentiment of people feeling like they can no longer afford to rent or own a home in Ithaca. However, Ithaca has been becoming unaffordable for quite some time, I say this as someone who has lived in this community for 21 years. This feeling did not start with our assessment that increased this past year or the rollout of the BoE budget. Voting NO to the budget will not change your assessment, it will not “stick it” to administrators, who will get their raises along with other unionized ICSD employees as part of contractual negotiations. Voting NO will punish and hurt children, teachers and supporting staff. Teachers and support staff will have less resources and support to educate and inspire our children if we have to adopt a contingency plan. And our most vulnerable students will suffer the most. “How a society treats its most vulnerable is always the measure of its humanity” – Ghandi. In this context, how ICSD cares for and educates its most vulnerable students is an indication of how well the school district fares in educating its school community.
As we have all read about four of our schools losing “Good Standing” status with NYSED, and our Black and Brown students feeling the impact of this the most; how can we as a community in good conscious, say that we will provide our children, our future leaders with less than they deserve to overcome the many obstacles that the pandemic has created. For all the caregivers, educators, mental health workers out there, we all know - no one is okay! Some of us were not okay before we were forced into a few years of isolation, so to expect our educators to be able to reconcile the damages that the pandemic created with fewer resources is setting our educators up for the impossible. And yes, taxpayers should not have to bear the weight of this alone when we live in a town with college/university campuses. So instead of glorifying the problem, why don’t we talk about structural solutions? How many of us know Anna Kelles and Lea Webb personally, socially or professionally? Why don’t we bring in our state representatives to help us think about structural long-term solutions of state aid and university contributions? And while we are at it, invite Governor Kathy Hochul who sits on the Board of Trustees of Cornell University to this conversation; why are we not thinking strategically about those who hold power to shift this paradigm? I know this will take time, and folks are concerned with the now.
What can we do now? We can do an inventory of what ICSD offers and provides our students and staff from academics to extracurricular activities. We can ask the questions of, what is the district allocating funding for and is it effective and for whom? The district has an Evaluation Officer, we need to hear from her on what are the impacts of our initiatives, programs, and the curriculum offerings. Our teachers and support staff have unions and union leaders. We need to hear from the union leaders, not just during budget season or when chaos is amiss, but throughout the academic years so we know how best to support teachers all year long.
I will be voting yes to the budget. Yes, it is a huge increase. But guess what folks? We have 12 schools in our very small city, and we are living during a time of high inflation so the services needed to support all these 12 schools have increased. A typical classroom in our building has many adults. I bring this up because I constantly hear the comparison of salary of ICSD teachers to teachers outside the district who are making more than ICSD teachers. 9/10 times these teachers in other districts are making more money because they don’t have co-teachers, teachers assistants, teacher aides, 1:1s, etc. I am in NO way making the argument to have less support in the classroom or to eliminate positions, I am pointing out that our district has a larger supporting staff than many other districts. Teachers and supporting staff deserve a HIGHER wage without question. But this is not an ICSD only problem, this is a nationwide issue. Our country has not put anywhere near enough funding into public education that is needed. And this is not an excuse for the Board or the highly paid administration team. But we have to be real about what are the root causes vs. symptoms of the problems. Give this article a read if you have time: Schools are bracing for widespread teacher layoffs. Now the tricky part of this post, who I am voting for. I am going to be brutally honest because that is just who I am. After attending the public forum with all seven candidates, I left with very very strong opinions of what I witnessed and heard. I plan to vote for Barry Derfel, Moira Long, and Eldred Harris. I know Barry Derfel very peripherally from sitting on the BoE, as well as when I worked for the Multicultural Resource Center, and he was supporting teachers with culturally responsive teaching as well as participating with the Talking Circles initiative. What I know of Barry, is that he is a supporter of equity and inclusion, meaning NO CHILD GETS LEFT BEHIND. Barry has been a teacher, an administrator, and is a parent – he understands the many facets of public education and how we are thriving as a district and how we are failing as a district. Two truths can stand side by side.
I was on the BoE with both Eldred and Moira during my tenure, and it was not always cordial and a walk in the park between us. But what I can say, is that in those behind the door conversations, heated debates, I rarely ever questioned their commitment to children and teachers and support staff. Moira has always championed for teachers and retirees; she understands their plight and struggles as a former teacher herself. Eldred and I both grew up in NYC (though he is my senior by maybe a couple decades) and understand the struggles of being hyper visible yet unseen, overcoming adversity, attending underfunded schools, and taught by teachers who were tasked with the impossible. I know Eldred to be someone who is going to champion for what is best for every child, someone who is going to tap into their radical imagination to think of another way forward, someone who has institutional knowledge and knows how far the district has come, and someone who is willing to ask the hard questions.
I’m going to close this long monologue by saying I believe in creating space for new voices at the table. However, some of these new voices are advocating for changes that will hurt specific populations of children, like candidates who are advocating to bring back policies such as "tracking", while research shows tracking has a disparaging outcome for students and frankly is a racist policy. I said it. There are also candidates who have flip flopped on their support of the budget, telling ITA they would vote yes and after receiving the teacher’s union endorsement telling community members, they would vote no for the budget. Misleading your constituents is never a good sign and not a good way to build community trust and engagement. If I had to vote for a fourth candidate, it would be Todd Fox. He was honest and transparent about his talents and his lack of knowledge of the processes within public education. However, he spoke with passion and authenticity when speaking about his experiences in the school district as a student, and the support he wished he had as a former ICSD student. What I hope for in a school board member, is someone is not afraid to ask the hard questions, someone who listens with compassion and empathy (even if they disagree), someone who takes the time to get to know their constituents and can be honest with themselves and their fellow board members when they are individually or collectively are missing the mark. And most importantly, someone who is is always thinking about equity, and who is at the table and who is not. Our district is in need of school board members who are looking beyond what their individual child needs and instead is looking at what all of our children need in order to receive an equitable education that allows them to more than survive but to thrive within ICSD.

Opportunity on 200k single family home in top school district, like top 3 in 2024 in city metro, top 10 in the state, information from Niche
Someone did minor flip on it and rented for a bit, most recent rent was $1900 in 2023
House is technically all good to go with some small stuff like gap between floor, closet door not on track…etc, overall seems to be lousy flipper missed a lot detail, but function house
House building overall is in good condition, very nice neighborhood, very nice street, close walking distance to elementary school
Long story short, based on current interest rate and high tax, my rough estimate is $1820 PITI. I can get section 8 for $2100 rent, while the profit margin is very slim, most likely lose some or break even consider vacancy, capex…etc.
I also think neighbor would hate me for renting to section 8 tenants
Closing cost, down payment, minor repairs let’s say 62k with $280 monthly income when nothing goes wrong for the sake a owning high demand and high growth neighborhood
My math is telling me no, but my guts telling me go for it, housing growth has not stopped in my city, and it’s even hotter in this very popular neighborhoods

I am a community college student in Michigan. As of last week I am in my fourth semester at my school. There are still two more courses I could take at community college that count towards my intended major (elementary education) before transferring and I’d really like to take as many credits at CC as possible to save as much money as possible. These classes are Intro to Education and Math for Elementary School Teachers 2.
However right now I attend a urban community college district with 5 different campuses all across my city, and the only time they are offering intro to education in the fall is Tuesday/Thursday mornings at the campus furthest away from where I live/work (like 30+ minutes), and I work full time as a nanny from 8 AM-4PM every weekday and have been taking night classes and weekend classes so that time really doesn’t work for me. They’re also only offering math for elementary school teachers 2 online and I know myself and taking a math class online would be a disaster so that’s really not ideal either.
There’s another community college in a suburb like 15 minutes away from my apartment that’s in the same county I live in so I’d still be in district for financial aid, and they have many more class slots and times that I can make work into my schedule much easier. Is it possible to transfer to the different community college just for one last semester to take two classes and a couple electives so I can have full time status for financial aid and is it with doing so? Should I look at just transferring to a local university without having taken those two credits and take them at the university ? I’m reliant on financial aid, I’m a Pell grant recipient and I could not go to school without it so I really don’t want to do anything that would mess that up. Thank you in advance for any advice!

Hi everyone! I’ve recently started a new role as the “AAC Coordinator” for a preschool special education program. I was just told we received grant funding and I can create an “AAC wishlist” of materials to support the program for next year. I am so excited for this! I was hoping to get some ideas for what is on everyone’s dream AAC wishlist.
Right now we have iPads for all SLPs to trial in sessions. The iPads are equipped with TouchChat and Proloquo apps. Once we determine a student would benefit from AAC we submit a request to their school district to have a device provided by district and added to their IEP. This is important because we are preschool only and we want to make sure our students AAC devices follow them to elementary school- our students typically return to their local district. My biggest priority is to request more devices (iPads) so that we can have “loaner” devices assigned to students while we are waiting for district approval.
I’d love to include some other resources as well though! I wasn’t given a budget- I plan to ask for the moon and see what gets approved… Any other material recommendations? AAC software recommendations? Curriculum programs you like (like a core word of the week program)? Even continuing education courses for staff would be helpful!
So far I’m thinking of possibly asking for LAMP words for life and maybe some key guards to help with easier access. Our students are all ages 3-4, early communicators, and many of our students are autistic. We don’t have many students with complex medical/physical needs aside from ASD. I think our biggest challenge has been gaining buy in from teachers/classroom staff and incorporating AAC into classroom lessons. We’re focusing on that for next year. Maybe some large core word posters for classroom use but I’m not sure how often they’d be used.

My daughter is diagnosed with ADHD and struggles to keep it together at school. She’s in third grade. However, in spite of the diagnosis and recommendations from her private psychologist that she meets with weekly, the school is refusing to give her an evaluation for services in the district.
They claim that she is doing too well academically during school hours to warrant and evaluation. When we requested that they give her the Weschler five assessment they also denied that stating that it was not necessary.
They want to put her on a 504 plan instead.
I just started learning about this side of special education and I’m lost. Can anyone advise me as to whether the school is correct and I cannot request evaluations if they deem them unnecessary?
We started this procedure in September when we saw our daughter go from loving school to suddenly hating school and struggling.
The teacher would not allow any interventions throughout the year unless there was documentation, so we played that game and got her every document she requested. We paid for the ADHD assessment on our own and we are looking for the school to evaluate her in order to form an IEP.
I don’t know if I have any rights but something is not sitting well. Thank you for any information you can provide.

I've been reading through all the posts in regards to NJ Family Care and I see that it's basically a horror show. With that in mind, I'm trying to make sure I get everything correct as my situation is a little "involved." They are asking for my marital status which is technically "married," but I have not lived with my spouse for almost ten years at this point. Up until recently, he was violently opposed to divorce proceedings and would spew all sorts of threats regarding my wanting to file. We never went to court for anything, I essentially threw whatever belongings I could in bags and fled with our two daughters who were pre-school age at the time (now they are in middle school.) So there was never any court ordered support and over the years he has sent random amounts of "support" via Paypal, had them visit when it fit his schedule and provided medical insurance coverage through a group plan he had through an association he belonged to. I've also never had the money to hire an attorney for the divorce because providing for my two daughters all those years alone never left anything extra for that sort of thing. He lives in NY, I moved back home to NJ in July of 2022 because I was pregnant and moving in with my current partner. I just found out that he stopped paying for my daughters (and my) health insurance so I need to get the three of us covered. I have no income, I stay home with my son who is 20 months old and my partner works ( has his own insurance through his job for him and our son) so I think I should be able to qualify - my one daughter is also autistic (enrolled with an IEP in the special education program through the local district.) The application asks my marital status, I'm wondering what to put down because while I am married, it's not to the person who I share a household with (my partner files taxes as head of household and claims my daughters as dependents because their Father does not and he's the one who actually supports them.) So what would be the proper response? I'm not legally separated but when I put down that I'm "Married" it will not let me advance without inputting spouse information. I put my partner down as a household member but he is "Single" along with all the kids. My technical husband is NOT a household member.
Second question...I assume they will take into account my partner's income which would probably be more than the thresholds for social services. Will this prevent my daughters and I from getting health coverage? I mean, he makes a decent living but we are just making the mortgage and bills with the crazy cost of living here. I also see that they want bank statements from reading some of the other posts. This time of year we have a little extra in our accounts because of his tax refund but in no way are we ever close to being this "stacked" and by stacked I mean I had a couple thousand when any other time of the year i might have a couple hundred bucks lol.

I recently got rejected back in February, I had applied to the UofA for a fully funded PhD in Special Education. I am wondering if I should keep pursuing this or if I should just be content as I am. I am wondering what I can really do with a PhD besides become a professor or work in administration at a school district. Despite all that I feel like a loser for not getting admitted.

I’m looking for some help in recreating a logo for a heartfelt project. My friend has a couple of old school pictures of her dad when he was a kid, and they feature a logo from an airline called Hogan that used to fly out of Butler County Regional Airport in Ohio. My friend’s dad and his brother had matching jackets with this logo, and she wants to recreate it onto a new jacket for her dad as a surprise gift.
