2024.05.14 12:01 Potential_Yellow_314 Old, bold, but gold if you ask me

So, here's the deal. I am still, as many other, fond of Arcane. I also feel that it's a bloody waste that Silco has been in TFT but not added as a champion to the rift. Henceforth, here is my personally created concept for Silco and how he might be added to the rift.
-Bio: A rebellious and sharp, iron willed underground boss and warlord, Silco was a man known across the low levels of Piltover, who was very quickly also recognised by the posh, rich, upper levels of it as a fierce man with an idea, and a plan, to give birth to the independence of the low levels of Piltover, granting it life and freedom under the new name that in not so distant future would be known by another name, that would be recognised not just by Piltover, but all the others as the underworld of Zaun, with him known as the late father of it. Brute force and immense willpower are his greatest tools, which made him the man no one would mess around with. After he split paths with Warwick, then known as Vander, he made an empire dedicated to a greater cause, the only cause, birth of Zaun.
-Silco has ranged auto attacks. His primary role is toplane, secondary support and tertiary midlane. Silco is meant to be a tank.
-Willpower of Zaun (passive): Due to his willpower and fierceness, Silco doesn't condone to anyone. Henceforth, when taking damage, Silco acquires tenacity, stacking up to 10. Each stack carries 1% tenacity and expires 5 seconds after exiting combat. At max stacks, Silco gains additional 5% tenacity to prove his unbreakable will.
-You're perfect (passive): whenever an ally Jinx's passive "Loose Cannon" procs, the move speed buff also applies to Silco.
-Shimmer of Zaun (Q): Silco throws a flask of shimmer, which breaks upon making contact with the ground, creating a circular area of weakening shimmer, slowing enemies. Those foolish enough to remain standing on it for more than 5 seconds are grounded and Silco gets a brief shield scaling with level. Silco's next auto attack is empowered, rooting any target that he attacks in the next 3 seconds, but his auto attack range is halved.
-Eye of Zaun (W): Silco applies shimmer to his eye, granting him sight over his enemies for 2 seconds. This ability requires a 2 second channelling and can be interrupted with stuns.
-Remember your Salvatore (E, passive ability): Silco's auto attacks have a poisonous touch, applying burn that deals magic damage for 3 seconds after Silco grants his enemies an insightful reminder of the salvation he brought to Zaun in form of a touch. This damage scales with his magic resistance (base and item granted).
-The father of Zaun (R): Silco decides to display his power by summoning Deckard and Sevika. After a 3 second channel, upon their arrival he empowers them with shimmer. Deckard and Sevika have low health and resistances, equal to Silco's current base stats, but immensely powerful melee auto attacks scaling with Silco's armour. If not defeated in combat, they will be called off by Silco after 20 seconds.

2024.05.14 11:12 Bianca_Raven_Black How to Start a Business – A Guide From an Established Entrepreneur

For the past few years, I've been on a wild ride, starting (and successfully running) 8 different businesses. Along the way, I've devoured countless books, experimented like crazy, and even cracked the $1.5 million yearly revenue mark. Not too shabby, right?
But the most valuable lessons haven't come from textbooks - it's the trenches, the hustle, the real-world experience that truly equips you. That's why I'm here - to share the no-BS knowledge I've gained to help you start your business and avoid the pitfalls I stumbled into.
TL;DR: If you’ve got your business plan ready, and are ready to officially launch your business, Tailor Brands can help you with business registration, branding, and getting your website up and running.

Step 1 - Pick a Business Idea

Let's ditch the "follow your passion" cliche for a sec. Sure, loving what you do is important, but a successful business also needs two ingredients: profitability, and skills.
Think about it: being passionate about music is awesome, but if singing isn't your forte, building a music career might be tough. Same goes for that handmade soap dream in a town saturated with sudsy shops. Competition is fierce, so replicating what others already do is a challenge.
Finding Your Business Niche:
These can all lead to a golden business concept. Even if you have a starting point, these questions can help you refine and solidify it. Remember, your idea doesn't have to revolutionize the world. Improving on existing products or creating digital products with minimal overhead are great options too!
Choosing Your Business Model:
Before diving in, consider these factors:

Step 2 - Research the Market

If the market research says your product is everywhere, you gotta niche down. Take cleaning services for example. Forget general cleaning - maybe you specialize in pet messes or tackling garage nightmares. See where I'm going?

Step 3 - Get your Business Plan Ready

Having a business plan shows you've got a thought-out strategy, not a guessing game. Planning helps you spot potential problems before you invest a ton of time and money. And it can help you track your progress and make sure you're on the right path.
What to Include:
It doesn’t have to be a 50-page book. Just having these important sections defined will give you a great business plan.

Step 4 - Choose Your Business Structure

Choosing a business structure depends on how much paperwork you want to deal with, how much personal liability you want to risk, and how you plan to grow your business.
Here's a quick breakdown:
Services like Tailor Brands or Northwest Registered Agent will do a great job to get your business registered officially.

Step 5 - Register Your Business and Get Licenses

Step 6 - Plan Out Financials

That’s about it. I could go more in-depth with scaling and growing your business but let’s leave that for another day. Before I end this post, I just want to add some personal tips that I’ve learned the hard way.
Focus on your strengths and delegate the rest. You can't be an expert in everything, so find reliable freelancers or agencies to handle tasks outside your skillset. This will free up your time to focus on what you do best and avoid burnout.
Embrace the launch and learn as you go. Don't wait until everything is perfect before you start. Launch your business and iterate based on customer feedback. The most valuable lessons often come from making mistakes and adapting.
Outsource for efficiency and expertise. Find trusted partners to handle tasks like accounting, marketing, and content creation. This allows you to access specialized skills without the overhead of hiring full-time employees.
Aim for premium value. Consider setting higher prices in your market. This can lead to better profit margins and a more manageable client base, as high-value clients often require less hand-holding.
Pay yourself first. Don't wait for the "right time" to take a salary. Make your business profitable from the start and ensure you're financially rewarded for your efforts.
Build a sustainable business. Prioritize creating a system that doesn't require excessive working hours. Your business should support your lifestyle, not the other way around.

2024.05.14 10:46 WatchingtheSociopafs Communism Vs Monarchy

Even a robber wears a disguise before robbing a bank.
It looks like in the late 80's the Yugoslav government decided to take the same approach. Up to that point they had been marginalizing the Serb identity and persecuting Serbs locally and abroad. Even the church was a target. They exclusively identified as Yugoslavs and not Serbs, Croats and Bosnians, etc
Romanians and Albanians in the meantime led the greatest efforts against communism. Romania even succeeding with the Coup to remove Nicolae Ceaușescu. The Albanians meanwhile hijacked a ship to escape to Italy.
Meanwhile the Berlin wall was falling Ronald Reagan was taking the piss out of the Soviets and things were looking very bad for the commies.
It seems like the Slovenians, Croats and Bosnians (who in WW2 fought against communism) saw their chance to break away as well and join the prosperous European Union.
But did we at that point witness the most diabolic military strategies the world has ever seen?
The stronghold of communism in the Balkans without a doubt was Belgrade. Some may say they were more eager for a fight with capitalists then Russia at that time. (Russia seemingly standing on the sidelines watching in horror)
So what was this strategy. Well they needed help from the diaspora as they were under sanctions ( the only problem the diaspora was monarchist orthodox Serbs who disliked communism) so overnight they abandoned their Yugoslav identity re-opened the church (which was officially closed) and became orthodox Serbs again. (New skin unlocked)
Other communist agents from other republics did the same to create an even more interesting dynamic in the war. So it was increasingly difficult to tell who was fighting for serbia or Yugoslavia, Croatia or Yugoslavia, Bosnia or Yugoslavia as there was an element of this masquarade in all republics but the headquarters of it all seems to have been Belgrade.
This of course making it one of the most treacherous wars ever seen. Serbs killing Serbs, Croats, Croats Bosnians Bosnians and Yugoslavs Yugoslavs all while sharing the same barracks.
A Mish mosh of useful idiots, pure psychopaths, twisted strategists, idealistic people bamboozled etc. Pure organized madness probably in it's truest form
Utlimatly a certain peace had been made but clearly if you read the news it is very tentative and it could errupt at anytime as all of these people in this masquarade war got stuck in different republics without a clear winner and they are still fighting (albeit peacefully for the moment) for supremacy it seems.
It would even appear these Yugoslavs have managed to manipulate the Crown prince Aleksandar Karadjordjević who has returned to Serbia but all of his advisors would appear to be war mongers for Tito's Yugoslavia. Some even veterans of the war itself.
This In effect making the crown prince today seemingly want fight for Tito? Or at least being bamboozled into it.
(The strategy is highly effective)
One thing can be said with certainty. Now that that Old Serbian diaspora is mostly dead or very old and no longer influential. We see that Belgrade once again is pushing for communism and revealing themselves as the ideologically athiest liberal Yugoslavs they actually are. As rural traditional Serbia has no voice in politics. The last figure who had that role was the politician Velimir Ilić but he was attacked in Belgrade and marginalized and has withdrawn from politics. It cannot be said though that he himself was not wearing a mask himself to subvert the voice of rural Serbia that in spite of Yugoslavia maintained a Serbian identity.
Taking a stroll through Belgrade the graffiti itself alone speaks loudly to that fact along with other indicators of society.
A traditional Serbian renaissance did not happen as we see in other former Eastern Bloc countries but a socialist hybrid that has adopted things it values from western culture but is still ideologically socialist.
One could even say this is the new mask its wearing. Is The mask of democracy or the west while working for the ideals of Tito, Lenin & Marx in the shadows which at the end of the day are the values they love and understand. Democracy and capitalism is a new curiosity, a toy if you will, that must be studied and undoutably disassembled and hacked in the name of the communist revolution.
It seems like in Eastern Europe most diplomatic functions have been appointed to people who posses the skill set of master scammers. The affinity church scam seemingly being the most common move.
The cherry on top for this scam is that one of the biggest enemies of the communist Yugoslavs (Serbs) take the blame for the bloody war excecuted by the communist wearing a Serbian disguise. Forever neutralizing the Serbian threat and allowing them to rebuild Yugoslavia in the Dark.

2024.05.14 10:38 astrobabag Power of Maa Kali Vashikaran Mantra

Power of Maa Kali Vashikaran Mantra
Maa Kali is the fierce Hindu goddess who is related to time, death and freedom. She is usually regarded as a goddess by the worshippers who come to ask her for her blessings and help when they are in trouble. One of the ways the Maa Kali's worshippers try to invoke her help is through vashikaran mantras.
maa kali vashikaran mantra
Vashikaran is a Tantric method which consists of the control or influence of the mind and the behavior of a person. Vashikaran mantras are a kind of mantras that are specifically designed for the purpose of warding off the evil eye. Maa Kali vashikaran mantra are a way of calling upon Maa Kali's power to exercise control over a particular person.
The practice of vashikaran mantras and rituals is debated, since by controlling another human's free will one is doing something that is ethically questionable. On the other hand, some of the followers are of the opinion that Maa Kali's vashikaran mantras can be used for good purposes to build better relationships and to solve the conflicts between lovers, married couples, family members, friends and business partners. The others are of the opinion that these mantras should be used with caution and they must be well adhered to in order to prevent any possible damage.
Here is one of the most popular Maa Kali vashikaran mantra:
Kring Kring Kring Hing Hing Hoom Hoom Kring Chaapaye Kali Mata Mantra Mein Shakti Ho, [Name of person] Ko Akarshit Karo
This mantra is the calling of Maa Kali's ritual bell (ghanta) to pull the specified person under her control. For the mantra to be effective, it has to be pronounced correctly and with complete faith in Sanskrit words. The number of times a person chants a prayer does not always remain the same, mostly it depends on the spiritual experience of the person who is chanting it.
Besides, the traditional rituals may be performed together with the daily chanting of the mantra, such as, offering incense, flowers and sweets to the image or idol of Maa Kali. Besides, more intense forms of Kali mantra sadhana are also done, but they should be done under the guidance of a qualified guru in order to handle the energies and spiritual forces at work.
In the end, the morality and the purpose of Maa Kali vashikaran that is used to perform the rituals is the deciding factor whether the rituals are for the good of the people or for the bad effect on the people relationships and lives. The phrasings of these mantras need wisdom, conscience and accountability on the practitioner's part. Like the deity herself, the mantras are the embodiment of shakti or power and this power must be channeled in a responsible way.

2024.05.14 10:25 Original-Loquat3788 The Peace Portal

He did not have much, and everything he did have was from after he fled.
Sean, his boyfriend, sat up on the bed, and they both looked at the painting.
It was simple and probably too postmodern for anyone who didn’t understand the meaning.
The painting was a plane ticket, his plane ticket, a name and a bar code, which had saved his life.
Where he came from, men like him were thrown from rooftops.
‘It’ll be ok,’ Sean said, ‘It’s just a symbol.’
‘They said the same thing after the last arms deal, and how many did that symbol kill?’
He thought back to when the plane had taken off, and he’d breathed properly for the first time in his life.

It was called the Peace Portal, but essentially it was a tunnel through space-time.
Until then, the technology had only been used by the military, and it was a huge coup for his former government.
He had to see it in action, so he went down to Liberty Square.
The portal was a kind of membrane, like looking at your hand underwater.
The President stood on the stage and gave a speech about the collapse of borders and freedom permeating the hearts of all men.
And then, it was time for the ribbon cutting.
He shivered.
A disembodied hand came from the other side and, with a comically large pair of scissors, snipped.
At this, his former King walked through and shook hands with The President.

The first reports surfaced and were quickly labeled fake news by a vast army of disinformation bots.
His boyfriend grew weary of the constant suspicion, and it led to arguments.
‘Go on, say it! I’m paranoid.’
‘Not exactly paranoid, but I’m guarding my tinfoil more closely.' Sean replied.
He didn’t laugh. ‘You’ll never understand; you grew up here.' He gestured around their 14th-floor apartment. ‘Where I come from, if you’re not paranoid, you die.’
Sean kissed him on the forehead. ‘You’re safe now.’

It was 2.30 am when the doorbell rang.
He bolted upright.
Sean was in the living room pulling an all-nighter.
‘No!’
It was too late; Sean opened the door and was batted aside by men dressed all in black holding a list.
He had not spoken his native tongue for a long time and, in his shock, could only blurt out, ‘The roof?’
It would not be so bad, he thought, to die a liberated man.
‘The roof is too good for you, scum.’
He was put in a car and driven quickly through quiet streets.
At the last moment, they removed his hood.
‘We want you to see,’ his kidnapper said, ‘the end of your old life.’
The city lights twinkled around him, and in front was the watery membrane. Through it, the visage of the setting sun.
He went to scream, but it was swallowed up as he tumbled through the Peace Portal.

2024.05.14 10:19 Commander_PonyShep Does anyone here even like fan-made Sonic OC's?

Because to me, with that many OC's like with Sonic's friends, I'd assume that Sonic would have gathered and united an army of these cartoon animals to wage war with Dr. Eggman. Like how we got the Freedom Fighters from Sonic SatAM and the Archie comics, as well as the Resistance and Restoration from Sonic Forces and the IDW comics.
Plus, I just find collectives more interesting to me than individuals. Not dissing a solo Sonic the Hedgehog, though, because he's got not only his super speed, but also his rings for defense and healing, and his ball form for attack. It's just that I grew up playing a lot of Japanese RPG's and enjoyed gathering companions for these journeys. And because of that, I'd assume that Sonic would have not only gathered his own similar friends, but also his own army of Sonic OC's, with half of them playing a home base support role, and the other half playing a frontline combat role, similar to his rings and ball form, respectively.
So are there really anyone who either doesn't mind fan-made Sonic OC's, or actually enjoy them?

2024.05.14 10:16 Consistent_You_5056 The New First Amendment

I…Without a source in void…Blank nothingness, no substance, material solidified, primordial concepts birthed from a dreaming consciousness left alone for immeasurable time… It was fear of the fragility to make existence…The first semblance of identity, already assumed the highest of dreamer, and miraculous freewill, a potential probability of "OM" unraveling. To vocally create after the amassed power to do so, could be a mistake of hellish surrealism, a failure of truth if it was to last eternity-should the beginning entities choose evil by choice, as made to believe, they're finite beings…inconceivable forever is a God… The perfection becomes the most vast elaboration conceivable, and, with a noise so loudly ultimate, the voice splices through the nothingness with a bang so violent, a literal universe awakens into momentary coalescence, attracting itself together into form at ultimate light speed, and yet slows down into a divisional amount of substances eventually labeled…linear, motion and time arrived…All of them asked if it was a perversion…no straight lines, folding on itself…ya, I smoke weed in my basement… The smartest said a vibratory process in an elastic inert medium, filling up universal space…a visible manifestation of a whole spectrum of electromagnetic waves, it's condensed hard, mixed within itself, from the inside out even made to expand…Gravitational warps, mass balls of weight create autobons, super highways ships can travel…sun's are harnessed, free energy exists, the utopian reality becomes actuality…some can only survive so long without destroying themselves before thousands of years fighting to survive…entire star systems or planets are capable to mobilize themselves into safety zones, remaining self sustaining and untouched by anything harmful for millions of years…in a bright future we'll never be "in"… "Swat!Smack!!!"...fly guts on my acrylic painting…cat urine soaked spotted drywall underneath the drop ceiling of a basement cellar attempt of a rental... space heater warmth resting on a concrete block of stone cold landlord profiteering, profit on an unbreathable musk heap. Mold permeates, damp dirt on a fresh spring rain, draining wetness into it... downloads of WiFi network binge watching the phone for t.v...Bi-law Officer's want to see me drooling on a pillow scratching my nut's in a torn up empty room, to drop an investigative neighbor's complaint of dwelling in decrepitude, that lowers the value of their home...at least my landlord isn't knocking with a human skin costume-because he's really a giant cockroach looking for "Orion's Belt", no, he's looking for regular handjobs from my ex's, and I know this from an eight minute recording of his request, obligingly sent to me from one of them...there are no bug's in the basement, just centipedes and daddy long legs, plus flies, attracted to the poop stained carpet above the bowing drywall, above me... there's no vent cover as the metal pops out through support beam's fitted with the heat tubes terribly hollow, this space is industrial...my particle board door has a dent two inches deep from a rock an ex took to it...it's about four inches thicker on the bottom, water has warped the wood to not close properly…I'm underground enough to survive like a roach in nukes,.though..Joe's apartment had company… People die of respiratory illness due to bedbugs or roach's...Overweight people run health stores, or give "qualified advice" for dietary athleticism…The most easiest of jobs make the most money, as nepotist's live as kings and queens upon the slavery of the less. The division is social and darwinian, brutality, and dominance…and it's a fluke for an individual to charm or be born into the luxurious…the unshared fullness may even morally be the great undoing… It is fear to lose such comfort or control. The very thought of equal entity implies shared power, and that is power to destroy. Why trust the loving power of another??? An epic story of hypocrisy and chosen specials… Dialectical psychosis to believe the purity is real. In cloud's to finally catch up to the surface of this original "bang", the noise gets louder…and I pop through the thought subjugated…big inhale… The entrance door, swelling out from the makeshift framing, jarring a gap that no seal's could fix. It's letting in breezes uncomfortable and chilling, and to get to that entrance, is a steep wooden step set that looks rather haunting... I was frightened I might have ended up in a freezer bag when I viewed the place before renting...took it because it was cheap, and I'd be alone with the grace of freedom, since a God's given none...the doorway is jarring to every female that's attempted a visit in this "abode", and bid farewell... I hear Shakespeare's dogs bark, the cat's patter as Ken's bus bird's chirp, flying over the nest, ambulance sirens, neighbor's arguing, and we have raccoons and squirrels inside, scratching and defecating along with the mice in almost every wall…it's Noah's Ark again…

2024.05.14 10:07 IndependentBody8553 How a Nayan grew to become a Sultai

As a very young soul, around maybe 5 or 6 years old, I had a very innocent and Accepting outlook on life. Despite coming from a less than ideal environment, I always found fascination in the world around me, and a reverence for what Mother Nature had gifted unto me. And so I first realized myself to be aligned closely with Green.
I always had a smile on my face, ready to embrace those around me; Ready to love as unconditionally as the Others had loved me. I felt a passion, a desire even, to do good for those Others, just to see the smile on their faces. A smile that they lacked, because they couldn't see the beauty that enveloped them; A beauty that I myself saw so very clearly. I yearned to live in the present, and to give unto Others the same heartfelt, Emotional passion and Acceptance that I felt so strongly towards them. I had a very Red heart, and a very White soul.
And I always had a smile on my face, when nobody else did. I always laughed, when the Others cried, so that they might share in my joy.
And over the years, as my family fought onward towards eachother; Gnashing their teeth for little Reason at all other than to watch eachother suffer for the sake of their own miscommunications, my efforts fell short.
And it caused me to wonder why...
"Why must they be so pessimistic and derogatory in life? Why must they be so quick to reject Reason? Why is their Logic so skewed?", I wondered..
And a very Blue thirst for knowledge started to form in my mind.
Not only did I begin to search for the meaning behind the problems that surrounded me, but also for the meaning behind everything which I did not understand. I passed the time by Nurturing my mind; By listening and Seeking Truth, when the Others would not listen. A True curiosity formed within me; Not only for what lay just beyond the grasp of comprehension, but just as much for the comprehension of what could be..
I learned that the soul source of conflict for many of their problems was Emotion; Emotion which drove them to impulse, Emotion which drove them to rage, Emotion which drove them to violence and Chaos. I also acknowledged this sense of Emotion within myself. And though it was mostly joyous, I learned that joy could very well blind me just as much as their rage blinded them. So I learned to Accept Reason and Order in favor of Chaos, and encouraged the Others around me to do so as well.
Well, this Bant way of thinking only lasted so long. Though the Others in my family grew to realize that my insight was quite valuable, they would only listen if I spoke in a language they understood. If anything that I said conflicted with their own perspective outright, I would lose their ear entirely. They would simply twist my words to their own warped sense of righteousness, to use against their 'enemies'. But I still loved them, and through and through I listened to them, day after day, trying to guide them towards a better path.
But that Red, joyous smile was no longer there on my face.
As I started my first days at school, I would keep myself isolated; Knowing that the others would have no patience, just as my family had already shown me. I would keep to myself and stand in the corner voluntarily, observing silently those around me; Without friends.
And both the teachers and the students found me absolutely frightening to try and comprehend.
I was, however, almost ALWAYS at the top of my class, quite Naturally.
Most of them avoided me, though some had tried to victimize me. I didn't retaliate to their beatings and abuse, because deep down I still abhored the idea of hurting the Others. But I also didn't feed into their taunts and ridicule. They left me quite dissatisfied, as they had gained nothing; For I had nothing to take away..
And one day, while I was walking down the hallway, thinking about life, I felt a sudden revelation bloom in my Mind..
What made those other students strive so Ruthlessly to Satisfy themselves at the cost of my Peace? What made my family fight so Ruthlessly to achieve their own Satisfaction at the cost of my Freedom? What have I been missing my whole life, that might be fruitless to the Others, but very fruitful to me, the Individual? What have their discrepancies cost ME? What might those very same discrepancies give unto me instead..
And a Growing Mindset returned the smile to my face once more.
Not a smile of Red, Emotional Freedom, but a smile of Black, Exploitative Satisfaction; If only at the cost of my precious, White sense of Altruism.
From that day forward, I always had a smile on my face, when nobody else did. I always laughed, when the Others cried, so that they might share in my suffering.
I began to whisper Profane Truths to the ears of my enemies, especially myself; Inspiring Fear, and obeying it. And I did this all under the guile of being a True friend; To both the Others, as well as myself, the Individual.
I began to fuel the arguements my family had, from ALL sides, to grow further the reward that I would inevitably reap.
I began to sacrifice not only of myself, the Individual, but of the Others as well, to attain my ideals of Perfection.
I revered the Knowledge that spurred me forward; The Knowledge that grew so boundlessly by the urge to further myself, the Individual, to greater heights; Exploiting what Nature had gifted unto me.
I saw success that I had never comprehended before as a possibility.
And to Mother Nature, I yet again beheld a reverence..
And then I realized what it was all for; How it was all possible.
What Preserved Truth had retained my sense of Peace, even in the face of Progressing Evolution? Even at the cost of my Emotional Freedom? Certainly the Harmony which allowed for such an Evolution in the first place.
What Natural Profanity returned to me a sense of Freedom, even as I Exploited what little I had left of my Altruistic Peace for the sake of Individuality? Certainly that Profanity which I had Accepted.
What saving grace might I inevitably lose, if only I allow for the Growth Mindset to consume me, once and for all?
That answer lays deep within the Green...
I believe it is no coincidence that the majority of the people in my life are Nayan. Perhaps because it is easy for me to utilize an instrument that I so deeply understand. Or perhaps because, deep down, I am reminded of a ghost; Of the treasured spirit I once held within my own soul..
I've always Accepted what the world gifted unto me. And I've always Harmonized with what surrounds me, for better or for worse.
And the Green is what I will always intend to embrace;
No matter the cost; No matter the reward. 💚
It is what it is, and it always will be. 😎 🌎

ANTIFASCIST INTERNATIONAL MANIFESTO
Supreme Commander Dark Celtic Tiger International Resistance Army
In the dark recesses of our world, where the shadows of fascism lurk, we, the Resistance, rise as a indomitable force against tyranny and oppression. We are the defenders of freedom and democracy, the warriors of justice, and the relentless adversaries of all who seek to impose their will through violence and hate.
With fiery determination burning in our hearts, we confront the forces of fascism head-on, refusing to yield to their demands or bow to their intimidation. We know the dangers that fascism poses to our society – the erosion of civil liberties, the suppression of dissent, and the scapegoating of marginalized communities – and we refuse to let it take hold.
The fascist menace must be met with unwavering resolve and unyielding force. We will not hesitate to confront it in all its forms, whether it manifests as hate speech, discrimination, or outright violence. We reject the notion that fascism has any place in our world, and we will do everything in our power to eradicate it from our midst.
But make no mistake – our Resistance is not just a defensive measure. We are not content to simply hold the line against fascism; we are determined to push it back, to dismantle its structures and destroy its influence once and for all. We will not rest until every vestige of fascism has been purged from our society, and the ideals of democracy, equality, and freedom reign supreme.
To achieve this goal, we must be ruthless in our pursuit of justice. We must be willing to confront the agents of fascism wherever they may hide – in the halls of power, on the streets of our cities, and even within our own communities. We must be prepared to use whatever means necessary to thwart their efforts and protect the vulnerable from their predations.
Our Resistance is not for the faint of heart. It requires courage, determination, and a willingness to sacrifice everything for the greater good. But we know that the stakes are too high to back down, too important to ignore. We are fighting for the soul of our world, for the future of humanity itself, and we will not be deterred by any obstacle or adversary.
So let this Manifesto be a rallying cry for all who share our cause. Let it inspire courage in the face of adversity, determination in the face of despair, and unity in the face of division. We will stand against fascism and all its works, and we will emerge victorious.

2024.05.14 08:39 TheSentinelScout I’m pretty sure I’m an INTP, but I want an objective view.

Just a disclaimer, I have ADHD, and I do follow CPT/cognitive personality theory.
— My parents (specifically my mom), is religious, but they’re never forced any of us (me and our siblings) to believe in the religion. Just participating in the festivals and certain rituals was/still is expected, though.
—If I were to spend the entire weekend by myself, I’d honestly feel kinda lethargic and dead inside—not because of lack of socialization, but because the vibes of the house is off when there’s no one. I can tell someone’s out of the house just by the pure vibes I’m getting. It feels weird even with one person gone (we’re a family of five; me, my younger brother and sister, and mom & dad).
—My relationship with movement and surroundings, is that I think I have great spatial awareness. I’m able to carry and do things in certain ways in order to avoid any pointless harm (such as avoiding to accidentally hitting the door on my leg as it closes). The type of activities I do tend to engage in outside is mainly just focusing on what I’m thinking about when walking outside, or just waiting to go back home.
—I’d say I’m pretty curious—I’ve always wondered why something makes me feel a certain way, for example, in lit & comp we recently learned about film composition, and after learning some of the stuff, I was able to spot it in the shows and videos I watched. After said lesson, I was always wondering about whether or not if the creators I watched (especially on YouTube) actually used said film composition, but it’s definitely interesting to look for.
—I wouldn’t necessarily enjoy taking a leadership position, but I’m willing to do so, especially if a project in class is summative/part of our grade. I’d be the leader if no one else had already taken up the position. It does make me feel quite nervous when I am in said position, though.
—I’d consider myself pretty coordinated. I know exactly how much milk to pour in a certain glass, and I know exactly where on the fingerboard of my violin each note is. I can also catch myself when I’m about to fall pretty well.
—The past in my opinion, is something that can give you knowledge for the future. Basically, it gives you the info for what not to do in the future, and how to avoid X circumstance, the best way forward, etc.
—The future on the other hand, I believe is kinda something you could plan for, or have a very vague idea of, but you can’t necessarily do anything about in the present. It’ll come when it comes.
—And for the present, I believe that it’s the most “calm before the storm” scenario. Its characteristics can only be defined by the current situation that’s happening; there’s nothing you could do to mitigate it, other than continuously plan for its eventual outcome.
—If they’re asking for something like asking for a charger or something (such as in school), I’ll generally decline unless they’re my friend, because it just takes so much unnecessary effort to pack up your charger. If it’s something I’m interested in helping with though, I’d gladly throw up word vomit at them, and then usually regret it later on. Basically, I’ll help someone if it’s no effort involved in my side and/or if I have a deep interest in the subject they need help on.
—Productivity isn’t as important to me as much as efficiency is, but productivity does tend to make me feel good. I often find myself wondering if my attention to the efficiency is actually a result of my obvious laziness. Like, I would literally pack my tiffin box in a certain way in my lunch bag so that when I take it out of my back pack, it isn’t all leaning to one side. I’ll also always wear my jacket everywhere because they have pockets, and I’m always like, “what if it rains by chance?” And I’ve actually been saved by my jacket multiple times that way.
—I’d say I’m decent at strategizing. I could use it effectively, but I just end up not putting the plan into use, because I either don’t have the motivation, or the deadline has been so long past that it isn’t worth it anymore.
—Freedom of thought, and expression. Also the freedom of being able to silently judge others. Mostly because I just want to be able to have/own my thoughts and opinions, if that makes sense?
—The “highs” in my life may look like when I’m able to turn in assignments on time, not feel complete demotivation, and able to live up to others expectation.
—The opposite of my highs. I suppose I’m in one of my “lows” right now.
—I pay attention to the world around me, but I feel like I’m never really in the present. It’s like there’s always something going on in my mind regardless of what’s happening in the foreground.
—I’d probably end up sleeping tbh. But I’d also probably start over-analyzing my understanding of a concept or subject. For example, CPT/cognitive personality theory, or MBTI. Basically, I’d be trying to find multiple ways of understanding a subject so that I could fully understand it.
—I usually don’t take much time to make an important decision usually because the thing is important. And no, I don’t generally tend to change my mind once I’ve done so.
—Yes, usually in order to avoid being out on the spot for anything. If they end up asking me their opinion, I usually try to say it in a polite manner, usually starting with, “I think X because Y,” etc. etc.
—I’d say I break rules pretty often, but they’re mainly arbitrary house-hold rules (the usuals, no phone after 10pm, no phone in the bathroom, no staying up late, etc.). I break them because in personally don’t find them logical.
—I do think authority shouldn’t be challenged as much as specific rules should be challenged. Mainly because yeah, they generally know better.
—I honestly have no idea at this point.

2024.05.14 07:51 StatisticianGreat514 CMV: Now that Conservatives are trashing MLK after many years of supporting him, I think it's time for them to admit that they never really liked him the first place.

Caution: Long Post
The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is without doubt and still is to this day one of the most influential, powerful, and iconic figures in American history due to his steadfast and nonviolent commitment in the fight for Civil Rights, Equality, and Justice during Jim Crow Segregation in the United States. The highlight of his career as an activist came in 1963 in which he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in front of Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. in which he envisioned a nation in which his children will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. This resulted in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to be passed. Even after his assassination in 1968, his legacy inspired many similar Civil Rights Movements around the world.
Today, Martin Luther King, Jr. is hailed by both sides of the American political sphere as a beacon of hope on how to fight for justice and equality for all during turbulent times. But it's the Conservatives who constantly claim that they truly support him and follow his dream, especially in modern times and they've expressed it in a rather whitewashed and partisan fashion. The most obvious being their use of his "I Have a Dream" speech by quoting the one line that has often been cherry-picked and misinterpreted quite a lot in which they judge people not by skin but by their character. The main reason they do this is to give them the appearance that they are colorblind as their way of opposing racism. And in doing so, they consistently criticize Liberals of trying to divide the country into special interest groups and promote favoritism. As a result, they always claim that Dr. King is a Republican, let alone would've been one in this era given his views, along with the fact that he was a Christian. His niece, Alveda King even emphasized it herself.
Some of the ways that Conservatives try to supposedly live up to Dr. King's "colorblind" dream is by opposing supposed "Wokeness", Critical Race Theory, and the practice of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion everywhere. They also express it by opposing Affirmative Action and the use of racial quotas when it comes to applying for schools, universities, and jobs because they believe it causes Reverse Discrimination. In terms of nonviolence, Conservatives express their disapproval of the Black Lives Matter movement. On the basis of Christianity, Conservatives believe that Dr. King supported a fixed moral code as indicated in his Letters from Birmingham Jail since he led with love and not racial hatred by changing the lives of people and not the laws itself, along with the notion of self-sufficiency. Seeing all this, it seems like Conservatives are really desperate to prove how much America has progressed in this post-racial world in order to debunk accusations that it isn't a racist country and that's why they always prop up Dr. King by claiming that they follow his dream and will continue to do so. Well.....up until now.
During this year's Martin Luther King Day, a string of prominent Conservative activists and organizations suddenly turned on him. Starting off with Charlie Kirk of the youth Conservative movement Turning Point USA, who launched a blistering anti-MLK campaign in which he supposedly dispelled the alleged myths surrounding his popularity. He accused Dr. King of being a "bad person" and that his "sainthood will cause Black voters to realize it's being used against them to suppress the individual." He even went further by stating that "we made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s" accusing it as "a way to get rid of the First Amendment". A while ago, the organization marketed the Conservative image of Dr. King when they sold $55 T-Shirts with his name as well as stickers of him with the words "Let Freedom Ring". Kirk was later joined by the Daily Wire's Matt Walsh who accused him of being a "communist". In fact, he railed against Dr. King a few years ago by accusing him of being a Womanizer, Adulterer, Plagiarizer, etc. Coming after Walsh was Human Events editor, conspiracy theorist, and fellow Turning Point USA alumna Jack Posobiec, who labeled Dr. King "a God of the Left" and stating that "the real legacy of the 1960s was enshrining Racial Discrimination and Race Consciousness into the Federal Bureaucracy." And finally, a popular Conservative Twitter account called "EndWokeness" called Dr. King "a Racial Marxist" because he "did not support a Colorblind Meritocracy" after it cited his quote on Wealth Distribution. What's even worse is that even non-White Conservatives hate him. Two examples include a commentator named Vince Everett Ellison and former football player and sports columnist, Jason Whitlock. The latest editions to the lineup of Black Guilt Conservatives, they railed against Dr. King and the passing of the Civil Rights by stating that they worsened the Black community by drifting them away from God into "Democratic Dependency". They even accused him of the same crimes as Walsh did.
With the sudden change in tone and emphasis from the Right against Dr. King, you have to ask yourself why they're doing this and what caused them to believe this way. And this is not an extremist fringe of the Right that some would expect to hear from. All of these are Mainstream Right-Wing Figures who have direct lineage to the GOP, including the current presidential nominee, Donald Trump. That's as Establishment you can get. Their remarks have been criticized by a lot of people from both sides and surprisingly by some Black Conservatives. One of them was Pastor Darrell Scott, a former faith advisor of Trump, who these days, is one of a few Black Conservatives who has been calling out other Black Conservatives for tearing down their own race in order to elevate their status among others, a very notorious habit of them. He criticized Kirk for inspiring a Hitler Youth. Another was Kimberly Klacik, who in 2020, gained viral for her campaign video stating that Black Lives don't matter to Democrats when she was running for Maryland's 7th Congressional District following the death of civil rights leader, Elijah Cummings, who was the incumbent. She criticized Kirk for his remarks stating that his rhetoric will prevent Blacks from voting Republican. Even with that said, there have been instances in which Conservatives themselves have questioned the Civil Rights Act and many of them have been pretty negative. If you check out other Conservative websites and especially here on Reddit, many of their criticisms echo the same sentiments as those Pundits stating that it was unconstitutional and that in infringed on the First Amendment, particularly the Notion of Freedom of Association.
That being said, there is some silver lining to this. Now, that they exposed themselves for what they really of think Dr. King, I think it's time for them to admit that they never really liked him in the first place, let alone understood who he really was and what he really stood for. In fact, they never really liked him at all. All they did was whitewash him and cherry-pick his ideas and speech for own Partisan Agenda. Dr. King constantly talked about the notion of Black Pride and campaigned about the need for Reparations. He also supported Affirmative Action stating in 1965 that "a Society that has done something special against the Negro for hundreds of years must now do something special for the Negro. Dr. King realized that our society was created in a way that managed to disadvantage the many for the benefit the few, and that America's Racial Hierarchy was connected to its Class Hierarchy. He also had political beliefs that manifested through both Racial Reconciliation and Concrete Policy Changes that could help restructure and benefit a divided and unequal nation. This is the reason why he referred to himself as a Democratic Socialist as he wanted a "Radical Redistribution of Economic and Political Power". In fact, he argued that true Equality can only be achieved, not just through legal rights, but through an equal distribution of resources. This is evident when he said “Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all God’s children.” This is the exact vision that Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders believed in. After all, he did participate in the March on Washington in 1963. In regards to Police Brutality, while Dr. King opposed violent protest, he did acknowledge that a riot is the language of the Unheard and that it came from a place of Desperation. In fact, in his "I Have a Dream" Speech, he stated that Blacks could "never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the Victim of the Unspeakable Horrors of Police Brutality." After all, he was hounded by the FBI, was called a Communist, broke the law in protest of race-based Segregation and Violence, was thrown in jail, advocated Protests and Sit-Ins, opposed White Rule of Society, and was assassinated for his Race and his views on Race. Regarding the quote about the Content of Character from said speech, Dr. King's daughter, Bernice King stated that using solely that quote diminishes the purpose of the entire speech because her father's dream and work included "eradicating Racism, not ignoring it."
If anything, this goes to show that is Dr. King were around today, he would be heavily criticized for being Woke, politically correct, a Communist, a Race Hustler, and a member of the Radical Left. And we all know that the Right hates those ideologies passionately. But here's the thing, he never considered himself a Democrat, let alone a Republican. He was an Independent as he felt that both parties are the same. And reducing his legacy to a single quote diminishes the gains that he fought for and believed in. This especially goes to a lot of Conservatives out there who claim to follow his lead using that quote because they interpret them in a way that benefits them today than how he meant them back then. For you to claim that he didn't care about Skin Color is like saying Susan B. Anthony didn't care about Gender. And to those Conservatives who now hate him, including Black, I hope you're OK with people getting treated unfairly, including your own. Who knew being seen as an Equal is a Negative in your eyes.

2024.05.14 06:49 Critical-Sense-1539 Some thoughts on why antinatalists continue their lives.

If you find life so bad, then why don't you kill yourself? Doesn't the fact that you continue to live despite your suffering show that deep down, you do find life valuable?
Questions such as these are perhaps the most common challenges people levy against antinatalists. These questions are basically attempts to undermine antinatalists' beliefs by suggesting that the fact they continue their lives shows that they do not actually have the problem with birth that they claim to. Given the popularity of this line of argument, I thought I might put together a small collection of what I consider to be the best responses.
I'll make the obvious point first that antinatalism, strictly speaking, is just a negative judgement regarding birth. There are many reasons one might make such a judgement; it's not necessarily because they think all lives are bad or fundamentally not worth living. An antinatalist could love their life and be grateful for it yet still hold the opinion that their parents should not have brought them into existence. Maybe they think the mere fact that their parents risked them having a bad life or the fact that their parents created them unconsensually is enough to make their birth unjustifiable. Maybe they have some Therefore, a question like, "If you find life so bad, then why don't you kill yourself?" is not even applicable to these sorts of people, for they could just say, "I do not find life so bad."
However, many antinatalists do take a pessimistic view of life; I would probably count myself among them. What of us? Do we discredit our pessimism by continuing to live? Well, even in this case, I think there are solid justifications that the antinatalist can give for why they continue to live. Here are two that I consider to be pretty easily defensible.
Response 1: Living for others
I think this point is easy enough to understand. Most of us have family and friends who care about us and would be very upset if we were to kill ourselves. Additionally, by continuing to live, we can engage in altruistic pursuits such as volunteering, charity, or activism in an attempt to relieve the suffering of others. Although we shall inevitably suffer throughout our lives, we can attempt to offset this suffering by using our lives as a force for good and sparing others from pain. We can bear some suffering ourselves so that others do not have to.
Response 2: It's not easy to die
The path to death is not a clear one; it's uncertain and dangerous. Even those who do not view death itself in a negative light are still averse to the fear and pain associated with the process of dying. The anxiety of looking down from the edge of a precipice, the uncomfortable sensation of a rope around your throat, the sharp pang of a blade through your arteries - these are what stand at the gate to death. Even if you work up the nerve to push through the pain and fear, there is no guarantee you die; it is entirely possible to end up injured with a far worse quality of life than what you had before.
If we lived in a world where people had access to painless and reliable methods to end their lives, well, maybe this wouldn't be such a critical consideration. However, as I'm sure you're aware, this is not that world; it's pretty much the opposite. It seems the majority of people actually try to make it more difficult for people to end their lives. There are so many barriers to suicide, both biological and social, that it should not be any surprise that we do not do it. We are so mired in habits that sustain life that it will take much more than philosophical conviction to break out of them; it takes a real sense of desperation.
As a metaphor, imagine you've been kidnapped and find yourself trapped in the back of a stranger's car. As the car speeds down the highway, you notice that the door is unlocked. An idea forms in your head: maybe you could take the opportunity to jump out and escape! However, you also recognize that this plan is far from guaranteed to work; jumping out of a moving vehicle could lead to grievous injury. There is also the chance that your kidnapper, having seen what you just tried, will probably just pick up your injured body and continue on their way.
Now, does your reluctance to jump mean you don't desire freedom? No. Does it mean you don't think your kidnapper wronged you? No again. Your kidnapper has created a situation where freedom is not easily attainable, and achieving it would require a painful, uncertain, and frightening effort. Similarly, someone might long for freedom from the sufferings of existence but hesitate to take that final step of suicide because their fear and uncertainty paralyze them into inaction.
_
Ultimately, I think it's rather heartless to look at somebody who finds their life burdensome yet lacks the fortitude to try and free themselves of it and say to them, "See, you love your life after all! You do not really think your parents wronged you." I find these sentiments disgusting; they disregard legitimate grievances regarding life just because the suffering individual was not quite desperate enough to take their death into their own hands. Is it really fair to demand that somebody must kill themselves to prove that their suffering matters otherwise every complaint they make is vacuous and insubstantial? Surely, this is too much to ask.
Overall, I think the points I've brought up here do a decently good job of showing that it is not hypocritical for an antinatalist, even a pessimistic one, to continue their life. What do you think though? Are my points here fair enough? If you can think of any other reasons why an antinatalist might continue to live, feel free to put them down in the comments.

2024.05.14 06:28 Salty-Profile4688 THIS REPORT PRESENTS A VERBATIM DIALOGUE AS SPOKEN BY CONVICT’S CONFESSION

I didn’t do it. I didn’! I didn’t! I’m no murderer, no, listen! I will tell you your a killer. You do not believe me? Even for a moment? But little is my own sentence even a concern for me, the freedom in society has little left to offer me. Grief and horror are all that fill my mind, the only residents remaining in my home. And you’d expect it to be such an oppressing grief. But no, no, no…it is much more the horror. It is much more the intense fear, the great disgusting and evil works that wait for me in the dark. The grizzly voice that reassures me of fate in its worst forms. It is here now. Cackling at its maniacal work. I hear it. What are you worth wretch! You’ll burn all your years and infinite more! But forgive me, my anger is difficult to suppress against my enemy. He lingers still. A lover of deception however, would be a fool in his own craft to reveal his intentions. Thus, would be a fool to reveal their own horrid form. Therefore, relinquish some of your repulsion of me, so that you may have at least some possibility of belief in what I say. I understand the situation I’m in, but why should I refrain from telling the truth simply because it is unlikely you will believe me? Especially when you condemn me? Listen then!
I was watching television, and my roommate was out the entirety of this night. My family remained in Los Angeles during this time, so they are not making any affect on what occurred. But you want me to tell of my roommate? I am telling you! You ask about the murderer, so you must listen to all I know of him. It was in the most ordinary of circumstances and activity when such a striking and alarming voice pierced the room. The TV was quiet, and I lounged about with dull mind. When I heard someone call for my name from down the hall, whom which I couldn’t see since the door was closed, I of course simply responded, “Yeah?” This was the very first of the remarkable experiences I began to have. I realized what had just occurred. I was home alone, so who could be calling to me from my own room? Well I suspected then my roommate. But I had trouble reconciling the voice I heard with that of my roommate. It had such an eerie tone to it. Almost as if it were teasing me. Yet, it was such a convincing and deceptive call, that the mocking tone it had was almost imperceivable. As if maybe this creepy inflection was a result of my own nerves or unfamiliarity with the event.
Regardless of it’s true nature, this odd quality roused my attention. Was I indeed not alone? But then it must be my roommate, since it was my name. I could not get over the gross friendly tone it called to me with. It’s as if it was bragging about knowing my name. I froze for a moment with the TV playing, listening for another call. “Javier” a woman's voice called out gently and compassionately. But such disgusting compassion did it call out. It seems it couldn’t itself disguise just the slightest hint of malevolence that just snuck under the tone. Or perhaps it meant to say it how it did. But it terrified me. I reasoned it must be somebody I know. But I couldn’t bear the action of getting up looking around. I was simply frozen, wishing not to move and cause myself to miss out on hearing more by making a racket myself. it didn’t even come from behind the door, it was as if it was somewhere far away. Yet it was so clear and punctual in volume.
This left me more at unease and helpless to find a solution. This time I did not respond. I greatly regretted responding the first time. I only paused the TV and looked about myself anxiously, dreading that something would speak again. After many moments of silence, I compromised to rest from my alert. And as the words spoke drifted deeper into the past, the simple abnormality of them caused them to resist their place in my mind as credibly existing. Though it happened not long ago that same hour, I questioned if I did indeed hear a call out for my name in such a mysterious and ugly tone as I had. This was just before the most morbid of calls occurred. It spoke to my name again, “Would you come, Javier?” But such terror came over me in that delicately rude and friendly tone which it spoke to me in. The suspense and anticipation for the call was intensely surmised to a realization as my heart began a sprint. This voice was not just a woman's, it was my sister. How incredibly unlikely she would be here, unannounced and somehow in my home without my knowledge. I still held intense fear, for you must understand the uncanny sense from this call. It was as if someone was inciting their vocals and tone to imitate or mock a human. It seemed not as if they were doing an impression of my sister—no, for it sounded exactly like my sister—but instead it seemed as if they attempted an impression of a human. Such a perfect quality, yet just so slightly imperfect that I may subconsciously perceive something wasn’t quite genuine in this call. I darted my perceptions across the room wide eyed. I quickly looked about myself, checking behind me multiple times.
Now, the following details not only enhance the unbelievable notions of my current situation, but may in fact completely discredit me in even speaking about them. But you must hear it! I implore you to imagine this! It is the truth—all of what I say is. For the night I heard her—my sister that is—speak to me in my own apartment, was the same night, as I learned weeks later, is the same night she had died. Sophia, that is her name, had killed herself.
Many nights passed like this when I was alone. I was tormented by calls with no direction or location. I shuddered at creepy voices beckoning in the dark. Sometimes, even in daylight, things spoke to me while I was alone. Unrelenting and disturbing voices within my home. Now, you may presume at this moment I am clearly schizophrenic. Indeed, I too had this notion. I seeked a psychiatrist during this time, to which medicine was prescribed and an indefinite period of shipping as well. But I perceived far too many REAL things. Yes, these could be hallucinations, but you couldn’t possibly have that conclusion if you hear what else this has done to me.
It happened after many terrible nights that I heard of my sister’s death. I was very shocked at first. But sadness was not next door, grief did not have time to move in. Instead, a realization taunted and teased my peace. I would hear her tonight, speaking to me. You may not imagine the dread that filled my day. I went to work and back home as a zombie. The tasks and conversations passed me by as dreams. I was incredibly absent and void of presence in my own life. My head spun before it comprehended any purpose of grief and despair. When I returned home I found myself double, triple checking that the lights were on and the blinds shut. Even though these things were clearly in my sight. I also locked doors and called my roommate to make sure he was home. I begged and pleaded with him, but he only brushed me off telling me he can't ditch his shift. I paced back and forth within the rooms pitching the plan to myself to have a hotel room. I eventually settled on this as it brought peace to me. And that night passed, at least before I slept, how I hoped. My sister did not speak to me from the darkness. But woe had not stopped its intention upon me that night.
I managed to fall asleep. In my dreams that night, I was visited with a vivid nightmare. I stood in my childhood home waiting at the door with a bat in my hand, standing between my sister and the entrance. I had this feeling that something bad was going to happen, and that I had to protect her, though nothing in particular was occurring. Then, with a gentle creek, a clawed hand reached and pushed the front door gently open. A demonically horned monstrosity stepped into the room. Its hooves clopped upon the wood floor. I intended to combat it, but my muscles took no command from me, and I swung the bat as if I was in molasses. It lunged with a deep roar to my sister, digging its hands into her stomach and viciously tearing it open with ease. It dug through her chest cavity as a dog digs holes in the dirt, spewing and tossing guts and organs out slashed and mutilated. I stood helpless and disgusted, until it turned towards me. It dropped my sister to the ground like a doll it no longer wanted to play with. It approached and grasped me tightly, growling a deep animalistic anger, its stature looming over me. It took its claw and dug it into its own eye, slicing it and tearing it open. It leaned over me, inches from my face. I screamed in horror. Black blood seeped and dripped from its swollen socket into my mouth. I struggled ferociously but the blood continuously poured from its eye into me.
I awoke sweating in pitch black, feeling Intense fear in myself. As a child that had not had their night light. I was terrified of the thought of something being in the darkness. I knew I was awake, and I was in a hotel in the middle of the night, but my heart started racing in irrational fear. I didn’t even have the courage to lift my head and look about the room to satiate the tormenting curiosity in the mystery of a possible supernatural visitor. But, I did. There was a demon sitting on the chair. A darker than dark silhouette of someone sitting hunched, looking at me. It was a shadow. But I knew, even then, this was a devil. I felt it. The blood in my skin fell away. I was mortified; in absolute terror. I stared unmoving with my heart beating out of my chest at this figure.
I slowly began to hold disdain for it. It did not move, it did not speak. But, I was beginning to be relieved of my fear. Instead, it was replaced with hate. Burning, mean hate. I hated it. No, I abhorred it. I was angry. The most intense rage fell upon me. I stood up from my bed, looking about the darkness. I stomped and clenched my fists. Captured in the most ridiculous delusion of fury, I began yelling and thrashing my room. I broke vases and electronics. I smashed the TV to the ground. I bit and gnawed at the chair leg which the thing sat on. I flipped the mattress and kicked doors off their hinges. I scratched and tore pillows like a feline. I was filled with so much hate and anger. I remained like this until hotel staff came to subdue me. Which, at their arrival, the feeling subsided suddenly.
I now was plagued daily by these voices, and nightly by this demon. The visits were not as dramatic as the first, but still, It watched me from different places in the dark each time. All it did was sit there. Weeks passed like this, I lost tremendous amounts of sleep attending to fruitless solutions and avoidances. Either I slept not a wink the night and evaded my tormentor, save for the voices if I’m alone, or I had to face my tormentor in the midst of night with a bravery I did not possess, awoken by various nightmares or visions designed for me that night.
But this is merely his entrance, I must now speak of the acquaintance he made with me. It was another terrible midnight where I stared at it, in whichever spot it had chose for the night, contemplating the nature of such a gross presence and its effect on me. When, filled with a ridiculous exhaustion and exhasperation, I called out to it, “What do you want!” I saw a slight twitch in its head, which struck me with more surprise than fear, although I had both. “Do you know me?” It spoke in a low and growled voice. It had such a tone of malevolence and mocking speech, it even felt as if it spoke condescendingly, as if I was a child it was reducing to. “No.” I said, my breath failing me. “I knew your sister.” The demon stated with a snicker, which developed into a chuckle, then an intense and hearty laugh. He wailed and howled in laughter even, he sounded insane. Such a disgusting sound it was to hear its voice in the darkness so pleased with itself. It confused and frustrated me in fear greatly, and it became so loud and went on for so long I couldn’t stand it. “Shut up!” I yelled finally. It stopped laughing immediately. “But you know Javier, you know me too.” It spoke very seriously. I stared in bewilderment. “You’re guilty! You’re guilty! You love murder! Haha! You love yourself! You stroke huh?” The demon spoke without relent and enjoyed his own hilarity. “What the fuck?” I said in a trembled whisper. “Yea, you hate clothes, you little pathetic bitch.” It cackled.
I was roused again with the most extreme and unimaginable anger. I yelled my defense at him. He grew in laughter. I screamed any kind of profanity and slur I could think of at his station, and he only grew in volume with me. This went on until I finally arrived at my king accusation, which was finally enough to have it stir, “You’re a failure of creation!” He was silent for a moment. “What is it you know of creation?” It spoke with such a terrible and tremendous tone. “Are you worth any more than me? You’re subject to death the same. I’m a connoisseur of freedoms, yet, what are you? You are a slave of fear, scared of your own desires. And, even more so, subject to me.. As much as a mouse loses its life to the metal spring when it grabs cheese, so do you spoil by me.” “You speak nonsense!” I retorted “You’re very stupid, it’s difficult for you to grasp.”
Then, without much more deliberation, it simply began roaring with the most horrific and inhumane noises. It began screeching—it screeched with blood curdling yells and sorrow. It screamed as if it was lit on fire. At once, in the shadows, it began clawing at its own face. I heard sounds of ripping and tearing—with noises as if pounds of deli meat were slammed onto the cutting board. This was accompanied by an intense and putrid smell of rot, and I began weeping. This experience was more than I could bare, and I couldn’t describe to u what was unnaturally filled in my mind. This night felt as if i was never going to escape the moment, like the present moment was my eternity. This sight annoyed me to my soul for what seemed like hours, and I even conjectured to myself that this torture was eternal.
But soon, he did indeed cease. A gentle glow of orange illuminated the end of my bed. He stood before me, tall and with elegance in the light. He was skinned, his jaw dislocated, his face scratched bare and raw so that no features were pertruding. He was completely nude, with hooves and fur patches among his disfigured appearances. He wore this boldly with shame, yet, overcame it with overwhelming pride.
Such beauty it was to admire his stature. I could not help but gaze with wonder and pleasure. I must have admired him for a while, perhaps even hours. I became mad with lust for him, such a delicious sight he was! I should give up my other fruitless endeavors of life if I could just have the delight to taste him.
But just as I settled on my prospective bliss, my roommate entered the room. His yell of terror attacked my ears, interrupting us. Why scream? Why that hideous look on his face? What was he so scared of? What possessed him to be worthy of beholding any sort of indignation upon my beautiful companion? A little worm—that ugly little leech that dared breath the same air as us. “Get rid of it.” The demon told me, but I hardly needed a command to conceive of my goal.
Oh, what fun I had! It was like the first fresh sip of lemonade on a summer day! Like the sunshine that seeps through window seals—like the birds chirping in the dewy mornings. Like the adrenaline of a rollercoaster—the tickle of a drop. Like the intoxication that gives you belief of so much confidence. And to feel it on my hands? It was the joy of a child when he smashes his fingers into the moist sand—that innocent satisfaction of destroying a castle. Like the excitement of opening your favorite bag of chips—grabbing the ends and pulling the plastic with might until bursts open with goodies; yes, that’s what it was like for me to stick my thumbs deep into his eye sockets, and pull to open—if only I could. It was such, as when I bit down on his throat with all my might and sipped. It was indeed so, when I scratched and clawed till my nails came off, opening his chest and pulling at ribs like discarded hot wings, ripping at organs and intestines, pulling of nails, bending fingers two loops around, snapping his arms, smashing his head with my foot—but again my happiness was destroyed. For my companion had fled the scene, and he was no longer present. At once, I recovered some coherence and realized the tragedy of what I had done. How would I hide this? How could I discard of blood evidence all over me? How was he going to chip in on rent in this condition? I obviously had not calculated all the required considerations before doing such a thing. I was enraged by the black magic possessed by the demon, stupid, tricky, evil thing. So you see, it was his fault.

Patterns of Gender-Based Violence in Conflict-Affected Ukraine: A Descriptive Analysis of Internally Displaced and Local Women Receiving Psychosocial Services

Arbitrary Displacement Is a Structural Rot that Hegemonizes Economic Abuse and with it Economic Collapse
Checkpoints for the displaced showed the most violence, literally predating on women when they were the most vulnerable by armed men.
Almost 8% of violent incidents against displaced women occurred at checkpoints or at reception centers for internally displaced persons (IDP) and 20% were perpetrated by armed men.
Majority of Ukrainian female respondents described their household economic situation as bad or very bad (59%)
A survey of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ukraine found that a majority of respondents described their household economic situation as bad or very bad (59%), and only 22% held regular employment (Roberts et al., 2017).
Women fleeing violence are most likely to be exposed to sexually violent men exactly at the moments they were most expecting protection. This suggests a pattern of men who watch for the female victims of their enemies, and then violate them when they come to them, simply out of nationalist/ethnicist hate crime, with no care about their status as a victim.
Meta-analytic findings estimate a 21% prevalence of sexual violence among female refugees and IDPs (Vu et al., 2014).
A 2014 national survey conducted shortly after the start of the conflict found that 19% of 15–49 year old women had experienced violence since the age of 15 compared to 17% in 2007 (Martsenyuk et al., 2014).
Displaced women were more likely to experience sexual violence
Furthermore, we hypothesized that among GBV survivors: 1) proportionally more violent acts against displaced women would be non-domestic and associated with combat operations (i.e., demobilized and active governmental and non-governmental soldiers); 2) displaced women would be more likely to experience sexual violence than local women; and 3) patterns of reporting and referrals would differ depending on a woman’s residency status.
UN Women’s Framework for emergency response and preparedness (UN Women, 2013) was used
The adaptation process followed the recommendations of the GBV-IMS Rollout Guidelines (UNFPA, n.d.) and the UN Women’s Framework for emergency response and preparedness (UN Women, 2013), and entailed piloting the tool with several mobile teams and incorporating the feedback from the field.
Definition of internally displaced person
Ukrainian law defines an internally displaced person as “a citizen of Ukraine, a foreigner or a stateless person who is in the territory of Ukraine legally and has the right to reside permanently in Ukraine, and who was forced to leave his place of residence due to armed conflict, temporary occupation, widespread violence, human rights violations or emergencies of natural or man-made nature” (On Ensuring the Rights and Freedoms of Internally Displaced Persons, 2014).
Forced marriage with economic abuse followed with rape and sexual assault
Determination of GBV type was made by mobile team members using the GBV-IMS classification tool (UNFPA et al., 2011). The form instructs providers to select only one GBV type per case based on a series of questions asked in a specific order, as follows: 1) rape (if any type of penetration occurred); 2) sexual assault (if there was unwanted sexual contact); 3) physical assault (if there was physical battery); 4) forced marriage; 5) economic violence (in cases of denial of resources, opportunities, or services); 6) psychological or emotional abuse (if the incident involved insults, name-calling, and humiliation); and 7) no GBV (if none of the above). If, for example, a woman reported experiencing unwanted sexual contact, the provider would classify the case as “sexual assault” and continue to the following section.
One in five women who experienced violence were unemployed, showing these violent perpetrators may keep their victims from employment or sabotage their employment purposefully to put them in harm’s way.
More than one in five (21.6%) women who experienced violence were unemployed, with no differences between the groups. Overall, slightly less than one-third (30.7%) of the women engaged in unpaid labor such as elder and childcare, with significantly higher proportions among local women. Proportionally more displaced women had a professional occupation (24.6% vs. 20.0%, p<0.001).
78.3% of women reported that a man raped them. Half of the women reported psychological abuse in addition, showing many rapists are psychologically abusive before and after as a tell-tale sign.
More than three-quarters (78.3%) of women reported that a man was the perpetrator. In nearly half of the cases, the perpetrator was an intimate partner (49.5%); and in roughly one in five (21.8%) a family member. Psychological abuse (48.4%) was reported by almost half of the women (See Table 2).
Compared to local women, proportionally more displaced women reported an incident of rape or sexual abuse (3.1% vs. 2.1%, p<0.001) or economic abuse (23.4% vs. 14.4%, p<0.001).
Gender based violence affects one million women annually in Ukraine
GBV is a grave human rights violation that affects an estimated one million women annually in Ukraine (Barrett et al., 2012). Social disruption and frail economic conditions in humanitarian settings further aggravate women’s vulnerability to violence, particularly for displaced women (Stark & Ager, 2011; Stark et al., 2017). This analysis supports our primary hypothesis that the experience of violence differs by survivors’ residency status. Specifically, we found differences in terms of relationship to the perpetrator, type of violence experienced and access to care between local and displaced women.
Checkpoints, or borderlines, nebulous zones of power shifts were huge points of violence to Ukrainian women, showing power shifts are often signaled by violence, especially to the most vulnerable.
Notably, 20.0% of displaced women in our sample experienced violence at the hands of armed men compared to 5.3% of local women. We also found that checkpoints between government-controlled and non-government–controlled areas and IDP reception centers posed a particular risk for displaced women in our study.
38% more displaced women reported experiencing sexual violence than local women, meaning people were actively preying on people who were displaced, not protecting them. This shows Ukrainian women are at huge risk of opportunistic rape by the very men pretending to be safe.
Whereas sexual violence was the least common type of reported violence, 38% more displaced women reported experiencing sexual violence than local women.
Ukrainian women come from a long history of corrupt police, so they did not report to the police because the police do not work for them and never have. That is not their fault; it is their country and area’s fault.
Studies in conflict-affected Ukraine found that a majority of survivors were unwilling to report GBV incidents to the police, particularly among internally displaced women (UCSR, 2018).
Because of this violence around the very people that were supposed to protect them, Ukrainian women are less likely to file a police report. Displaced women were even more unlikely. It is an intelligent decision to not have a faith that has been factually and with evidence violated repeatedly.
we found that displaced women were less than half as likely than local women to have filed a police report.
Younger women seek gender based violence services more than older women, showing Ukrainian women are often being targeted for their fertility and not receiving justice can help them remain to be seen as a fertility commodity instead of a human being, making European countries very wary of the nation seeing how their women are treated. Women's rights feature largely in European economic inclusion.
For example, among GBV survivors in Ukraine, younger women seek services for GBV more often than older women (41% of those aged 15–29 vs. 26% those aged 40–49) (Martsenyuk et al., 2014). Therefore, this analysis is not representative of all women experiencing violence.
Domestic violence within the ranks of the warring country increased during war for Ukrainian women, instead of coming together in solidarity and mutual support
Studies in complex emergency settings have found stigma among GBV survivors, normalization of domestic violence during times of conflict, unwillingness to report men living in the home for fear of forced military recruitment, and reluctance to involve law enforcement as major reporting barriers, especially among displaced women survivors of violence (Ager et al., 2018; Stark & Ager, 2011).

2024.05.14 06:03 squirrelintoronto Racism toward Asians happens at George Brown College

Please allow me to post this message to those from Asian countries going to George Brown College to pursue a career path or study. I want to express my concerns based on my experience as a recent graduate of GBC.
I previously received insulting comments about China from one of the racists in the classroom during the middle of the class, especially during the presentation time. I myself am from Korea and used to live in Japan; however, the racist who spent two years in the same classroom could spit out all hateful comments about China toward me, like the time that COVID happened, even if it was not the individual's fault.
That racist did not apologize or take any action; even the students around them tried to stop them. I asked the professor to make the announcement that racism happened, but no apology came to my end. After reaching out to the professor to talk to them, however, they just sent short and insincere messages, and later rudely poked me and kept insisting that they sent the mail to me, which was obviously not how people apologize to someone.
I contacted the Anti-racist department and the associate dean to escalate the situation. Still, the anti-racist department said that everyone has the freedom to speak what they want, and the insincere and rude email was already a matter. "Teachers took action, so they did their job.".
I have received racism, sexism, and comments against my religious belief in terms of out-of-the-classroom settings from people in the classroom. Still, racism can happen in the classroom, and no one is gonna take responsibility for what they have spoken under the name of "freedom." I know that hate speech can happen anywhere and anytime, and this is not only about Asians but also other ethnicities and races. However, based on my experience, I know that your identity and yourself can be marginalized in the classroom, and no one can help you solve the issue; I sincerely hope that people who are attending GBC are safe from that prejudice. On the other hand, if you just want to be a racist, GBC might be the best place to be yourself.

2024.05.14 05:45 Notdennisthepeasant I want to talk about today's episode and I know it's going to lead to an argument.

Episode description: James talks to Mo about the supreme court’s decision not to hear the McKesson case, what it really means for protest, and wise legal strategy for protesters in a year of election and genocide.
Every time I hear an interview talking about this issue the expert says the same thing, which logically should mean that it's far more likely they are right, since they all seem to agree. They say it's not a big deal, and everything is okay, at least for now.
But then they say that the conversation isn't even about whether or not the person is guilty of negligence, but whether or not they can be sued for it in the first place. But that's the whole damn point! I don't care if the person is guilty of it in this case. If they can be sued then we are done here. That's actually what matters. If I can be sued because somebody at a protest that I put my name on the permit for broke a window, then I can never risk getting a permit.
Whether or not the organizer is found guilty is immaterial, as long as he can be found liable. And the fact that it is a civil issue instead of a criminal one is immaterial. Anyone who thinks being financially destroyed for the rest of your life is fine because you're not in jail is absurdly naive. Because you will end up in jail. Because they arrest you for trespassing when you sleep somewhere you shouldn't because you can't afford a house to live in anymore.
And they go on to say that the court isn't necessarily approving of the decision to hear the case, but their refusal to hear the case does result in the case getting heard. For real. Now it's possible for him to get found guilty of negligence because somebody at his protest hit a cop in the head with a rock.
The Democrats using the fat fucking Cheeto man as an excuse to open people up to liability in this way really does end political speech outside of corporations. And hear me out. If you form a corporation and that corporation gets the permission for protest and then gets sued for damage caused during the protest then it can just declare bankruptcy and vanish, but the price of that process is attorneys and accountants fees that put protest in the hands of only the wealthy as a means of speech.
So what I'm saying is, yes this is a big fucking deal, and often the expert who says it's not goes on to then explain why it is without seeming to fucking realize it. And the judge throwing in reference to the case where they decided that a threat doesn't have to be explicit to be counted as a threat as a explanation for their decision shouldn't make anybody feel better. If you are at a protest with a megaphone and you say anything that can be interpreted as threatening, even though you didn't specifically threaten or incite, you now can at the very least be sued into oblivion.
But don't worry, because you can win that case so this isn't a big deal... As long as you can afford to be sued of course. And you have a judge who is into cop, which is pretty fucking rare.
And I know the answer here is to not ever get a permit, but that suggests that saying someone should not get a permit creates liability, since your speech affecting my behavior makes you liable now. So be careful giving that advice I guess.
But maybe protest has always been a useless approach anyway

2024.05.14 05:26 AbyssalHunter1998 Never Finding Love

Whatever
I'm starting to believe that I will never find the exact type of partner I'm asking for or be found by her.
Nobody is ever truly accepting or understanding, it's always red flag this or you need therapy that.
What if therapy can't help someone with their issues?
What if some people are so scarred they can't heal even with the help and assistance from therapy and need that one loving, caring and gentle guiding hand in their lives that understands them and is patient?
But of course asking for such a person automatically makes you evil, labelled an abuser in disguise, wolf in sheep's clothing etc.
Not to mention if you have any form of autism in which case you're absolutely fucked because apparently only Neurotypical people are acceptable as romantic partners and boyfriends.
You ask for loyalty and fidelity and they want to accuse you of trying to trap them and restrict their rights and freedoms meanwhile you're evil if you break loyalty or fidelity with them.
Asking for the basics is now like asking for the extremes apparently, it's almost like nobody actually wants to commit anymore and just be selfish.
They'd rather pick the players and cheaters who use them and hurt them instead of the real ones who will actually love and protect them.
This all goes for both Men and Women btw.
It's sickening to see how people just prey on each other, allow themselves to be preyed upon and then live lives of regret after that.
Now a the only things people want anymore is anything that is superficial, never anything actually deep unless it's something unobtainable of course.
Gone are the days of Honor and Good Enough.
Now are the days of Betrayal and Nothing's Good Enough.
If you're not "perfect" or "acceptable" by modern social standards and norms you're subhuman, a monster and should be avoided and ridiculed.
You're unworthy of Love, Care, Affection and anything that you may hope to have unless you're rich because apparently Materialism is more important than proper kindness, care and good hearts.
It's all just sad, sickening, sadistic and vile.
I really do believe I will NEVER have the partner of my dreams and the love that I have been looking for my whole life.

2024.05.14 05:26 Carpetfreak The Obscure Birds: A Theory Regarding Shakespeare's Macbeth

[I wrote this article about Macbeth for my college's newspaper, and I thought this subreddit might enjoy reading it!]
I have joked before that Shakespeare’s two favorite subjects–surpassing love, murder, madness, and crossdressing–are botany and birds. If you’ve been to New York City you might be aware of the “Shakespeare Garden” in Central Park, whose theoretical aim (though it proves nigh-impossible in practice) is to house specimens of all the plants which Shakespeare mentions in his plays. As it turns out, Bard quotes make for quite a diverse garden: there are roses which assuredly would smell as sweet by any other name; there are daffodils, that come before the swallow dares, and take the winds of March with beauty; there’s holly, heigh-ho; there’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance, there’s pansies, that’s for thoughts, there’s fennel for you, and columbines–no word on whether or not they could find any violets, though. I suppose there’s no objection to be made against those who complain that Shakespeare’s language is “flowery”; even as vicious a villain as Iago deigns to express his philosophy on life by way of botanical metaphor: “Our bodies are our gardens, to the which our wills are gardeners.” And, of course, the plot of A Midsummer Night’s Dream revolves around a magical flower which makes people fall in love.
I doubt anyone will object to my claiming of birds as Shakespeare’s other poetical fixation: I suspect that the majority of falconry knowledge which most non-falconers have today comes from reading footnotes in their copies of Shakespeare plays, explaining exactly what Richard II means by “How high a pitch his resolution soars,” or why Hamlet says “Hillo, ho, ho” to Marcellus. But while plants are so common in Shakespeare that I don’t know of one play which we might say is especially densely forested with references to them, there is one play that stands out as particularly full of birds in comparison with the rest of the Shakespearean canon. That play is Macbeth.
This is the sort of thing that one only notices after having read a play so many times that the actual events of the plot become akin to the meter of a poem–beats which must be hit, and which start to feel so natural that one hardly notices them–and one’s attention drifts away from the big, important speeches and toward the more utilitarian words and odd little moments that bridge them. I am not the first to point it out, but it is, all the same, a delightful quirk of the play, and could be a good way for Sophomores to throw their classmates for a loop in seminar [Note: Students at our college study Macbeth during their Sophomore year.]: why are there so many birds in Macbeth?
KING. Dismay’d not this/Our captains, Macbeth and Banquo? SERG. Yes,/As sparrows eagles… -Act I, Scene II
LADY. …The raven himself is hoarse/That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan… -Act I, Scene V
BAN. This guest of summer,/The temple-haunting martlet, does approve/By his loved mansionry, that the heaven’s breath/Smells wooingly here: no jutty, frieze/Buttress, nor coign of vantage, but this bird/Hath made his pendent bed and procreant cradle… -Act I, Scene VI
LADY. Hark! Peace! It was the owl that shriek’d, the fatal bellman… -Act II, Scene II
LADY. I heard the owl scream and the crickets cry. -Act II, Scene II
PORTER. …come in, tailor; here you may roast your goose… -Act II, Scene III
PORTER. ‘Faith, sir, we were carousing till the second cock… -Act II, Scene III
LENNOX. New hatch’d to the woeful time: the obscure bird/Clamour’d the livelong night… -Act II, Scene III
OLD MAN. …On Tuesday last,/A falcon, towering in her pride of place,/Was by a mousing owl hawk’d at and kill’d. -Act II, Scene IV
MACBETH. …Light thickens; and the crow/Makes wing to the rooky wood… -Act III, Scene II
MACBETH. If charnel-houses and our graves must send/Those that we bury back, our monuments/Shall be the maws of kites. -Act III, Scene IV
MACBETH. Augurs and understood relations have/By magot pies and choughs and rooks brought forth/The secret’st man of blood. -Act III, Scene IV
LADY MACDUFF. …the poor wren,/the most diminutive of birds, will fight,/Her young ones in her nest, against the owl. -Act IV, Scene II
LADY MACDUFF. How will you live? SON. As birds do, mother. LADY MACDUFF. What, with worms and flies? SON. With what I get, I mean; and so do they. LADY MACDUFF. Poor bird! Thou’ldst never fear the net nor lime,/The pitfall nor the gin? SON. Why should I, mother? Poor birds they are not set for. -Act IV, Scene II
FIRST MURDERER. What, you egg! -Act IV, Scene II
MACDUFF. …there cannot be/That vulture in you… -Act IV, Scene III
MACDUFF. …O hell-kite! All?/What, all my pretty chickens and their dam/At one fell swoop? -Act IV, Scene III
MACBETH. The devil damn thee black, thou cream-faced loon!/Where got’st thou that goose look? SERVANT. There is ten thousand– MACBETH. Geese, villain? -Act V, Scene III
Above I have listed every ornithological reference that I’ve found in the Scottish Play; as we peruse them, we certainly cannot conclude that every individual reference is of the same kind, or carries the same import. I will not pretend, for example, that, just because geese and ravens are both birds, the Porter’s invitation for the imagined English tailor to cook his goose in Hell merits as much attention as Lady Macbeth’s ominous declaration that “the raven himself is hoarse”. Nor do I think that any individual reference particularly demands explication; by itself, any one of these bird-invocations seems perfectly natural. Shakespeare’s talent is such that he can repeat a motif in such a way that on the macro level it is obvious yet on the micro level it hardly feels present. But that macro level is what interests me here: what impression is created, on the whole, by the presence of so many birds in this play? I have a theory, which, though it may seem far-fetched, I think merits at least some consideration, and which, at the very least, I have not seen stated elsewhere, and so may make a novel contribution to the conversation.
Macbeth is both Shakespeare’s most supernatural tragedy and his most Sophoclean; these two superlatives are inextricably related. The appellative Weird given to the opening scene’s three Sisters–derived from the Old English wyrd, meaning destiny, and famously given its more familiar connotation by Shakespeare himself in this very play–is, among the Bard’s works, unique to Macbeth; and just as that word appears nowhere else in Shakespeare, so is the concept it represents absent in all tragedies but this one. Though Hamlet may cry out against outrageous fortune, and though Othello may rhetoricize about how no man can control his fate, it is only in Macbeth that we truly feel that the events we see play out before us are fated, predestined, inevitable. [See Note 1.] The ghost in Hamlet commands his son to revenge his foul and most unnatural murder, but does not tell him it is certain that he will succeed; indeed, would not the drama be sapped of its intrigue if that level of certainty were present? Meanwhile, the supernatural interlopers in Macbeth offer the Scottish thane not a mission, but a prophecy: All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter! From its mystical opening word–When, not If–the Scottish play makes us aware of the certainty of all that is to befall our tragic antihero. Macbeth is thus a different sort of tragedy than Shakespeare’s others, and it works by an inverted mechanism. While the tragedy of, for example, Desdemona’s death is that it may have been prevented, the tragedy of Macbeth’s destruction is that it represents the fulfilment of fate; and this is the very same mechanism by which Oedipus Rex operates, complete with its own “Weird” character in the form of the seer Tiresias. Though Calvin managed to accept that some men are destined for greatness and others for ruin, this idea is, to Shakespeare and Sophocles, nothing short of agonizing–the stuff of tragedy.
Now: what does all of this have to do with birds? Consider these words from Antigone, spoken by Tiresias to Creon:
You shall learn, when you hear the indications of my art! As I took my place on my ancient seat for observing birds, where I can mark every bird of omen I heard a strange sound among them, since they were screeching with dire, incoherent frenzy and I knew that they were tearing each other with bloody claws, for there was a whirring of wings that made it clear… (Lloyd-Jones translation)
Consider next these words from Oedipus Tyrannus, spoken defensively by Oedipus to Tiresias:
Why, come, tell me, how can you be a true prophet? Why when the versifying hound was here did not you speak some word that could release the citizens? Indeed, her riddle was not one for the first comer to explain! It required prophetic skill, and you were exposed as having no knowledge from the birds or from the gods. No, it was I that came, Oedipus who knew nothing, and put a stop to her; I hit the mark by native wit, not by what I learned from birds. (Lloyd-Jones translation)
The practice of divining the future from birds–be it from their behaviors, their cries, or their innards–was, to Sophocles and his contemporaries, not superstitious hokum, but a practical science at which one could be skilled or unskilled, and it bodes ill for Oedipus that he is so quick to disregard it in favor of his own native wit. [See Note 2] By Shakespeare’s day, the practice had long been relegated to the realm of outdated hocus-pocus, but the Bard still saw some truth in it; in Macbeth, there is a recurring sense that, when the world is sick with some great wrong, its first symptoms manifest in the behavior of birds. When the “fatal bellman” the owl shrieks in the night, Lady Macbeth takes it as a sign that her husband is about his bloody business. The day after the murder of Duncan, as Ross converses with an Old Man about the strange things they’ve seen the previous night, “unnatural/Even as the deed that’s done”, the killing of a falcon by a mousing-owl–an omen straight out of Sophocles–is mentioned before the madness and cannibalism of Duncan’s horses, even though the latter would surely be more immediately noticeable and ghastly than the former.
These are the most obvious examples of birds as ill omens in Macbeth; yet even the more innocuous invocations of birds throughout the rest of the play continually turn our thoughts back to the ancient Greek understanding of fate and prophecy, and thereby remind us that, however savagely he may fight at Dunsinane, Macbeth’s fate is as fixed as that of Oedipus. The birds have already foretold all.
Note 1: The closest thing there is to this kind of fatalness in another Shakespearean tragedy is the several superstitious occurrences in Julius Caesar–both the soothsayer’s message of “Beware the ides of March” and the bestial portents such as the lack of a heart in an offering and the whelping of a lioness in the streets. Still, I will insist that these omens do not convey a sense of fatedness to the audience as strongly as the Weird Sisters in Macbeth by virtue of their being told to Caesar himself, not to Brutus, the play’s true protagonist, and by the fact that Shakespeare elsewhere uses dialogue to throw some doubt upon the idea of predestination: "Men at some times are masters of their fates:/The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,/But in ourselves, that we are underlings." -I.ii
Note 2: The Liddell-Scott Greek Lexicon identifies at least two separate verbs referring to bird-based divination, both of which are present in the quoted passages: Tiresias uses ορνϊθοσκοπέομαι, observe birds, interpret their flight and cries, while Oedipus uses οιωνίζομαι, take omens from the flight and cries of birds. The latter term comes from οιωνος, a large bird, bird of prey, such as a vulture or eagle, and so distinguished from a common bird, while the former comes from ορνις, which more generally refers to a bird, including birds of prey and domestic fowls. Birds of both kinds are present in Macbeth; there are οιωναι, such as the “falcon, towering in her pride of place”, as well as ορνες, like the Porter’s goose and cock. I therefore see little value in interrogating the kinds of birds invoked by Shakespeare, the specific cultural associations and significance of the owl, the raven, or the wren; rather, if we reduce them down to their barest existence as birds, animals of the class Aves, and consider them in an ancient Greek light, then things become a bit clearer.
