2024.05.14 22:17 pcmastergamez How much better are the pictures of Pixel 8 Pro Vs S24 Ultra?

Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a new phone and I know people talk about how pixel 8 pro has better camera for photos and the s24 ultra has better video quality. I'm curious how much better is the pixel's photo quality? the videos on YouTube use auto mode for their comparisons so I'm not sure if the comparisons are the optimal quality from the phones. I'm curious if someone used s24 ultra in a raw format and edited photos , would it be able to match pixel 8 pro's quality? Keep in mind I don't have pets etc so I don't care about shutter speed or capture fast moving subjects. I like Samsung's customisation and flexibility as a phone but the camera is why I'm making this post. I tried iPhone 15 but it's way too limited in the user experience for my taste. Another question I have is regarding skin tones, iPhone makes people have a more saturated look and pixel is more accurate, but with s24 could I edit a raw photo and make the photo match my skin tone and what I see in real life? Or is it baked into the photo so I can't?
My camera use would be to take travel photos and videos to post on Instagram, and to take portraits of friends and have them taken of me to get high quality photos for social media.
I'm in the UK and price difference isn't a consideration since there are deals for both phones occasionally.
Thanks in advance :)

2024.05.14 22:00 karstentanggaard Saving cookings

I have just bought 4 thermometers and a Display. It works fine, fast and accurate with impressive reads of center, ambient and surface temps.
This is very usefull for me as a consultant for chefs wanting to improve the cookings in their Pro ovens (Rational). I wish I had them when I wrote my sous vide books!
The ability to document surface temp is a bit of a game changer for food safety (HACCP) as you (in Denmark at least) are allowed to serve whole pieces of meat at any internal temp if the surface has reached 75C for just a minute. But this has been hard to document until this unit appeared.
It would be a great help if the sw could have a few extras: - start recording - stop recording - save recording incl recipe name - set sample rate (2 per second is impressive but produces huge files, 1 per 10, 15 or 30 secs would be enough I think)
Fantastic if the graphics could be saved as well but it is possible to do graphs in excel.

2024.05.14 21:51 marcusroar Scan digital mementos on your iPhone and view them on your AVP in 3D

Hello 👋 I’m the solo developer of a free iOS app called Objy, and I recently updated it with a feature for AVP users - I was hoping for your feedback.
Objy is an iOS app, and like many of the 3D scanning apps out there, it uses Apple’s Object Capture on-device photogrammetry to quickly and easily capture 3D digital replicas.
The latest version of Objy generates a public URL, so you can share your captures with anyone, including your AVP. Just open the link, click “Viewing on a Vision Pro? Click here!” and once the model is loaded, you can open it via downloads and it’ll persist in your space to enjoy!
You can try a few of my favourite captures here to see what I mean:

Why isn’t this an AVP app? I am based in Australia where the AVP isn’t released, I hope one day I’ll be able to get one, although it’s a little out of my budget right now too.
You can download Objy for free from the iOS App Store. I’d appreciate any feedback you have. https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/objy-3d-scanning-web-sharing/id6478846664
I recently wrote a short post on how you might use Objy to create and share engaging AR experiences online for baked goodies, you might be interested in 😎

BTW.. could you help me?
I’m genuinely passionate about helping small business show off their wares and products using fast and easy 3D experiences. If you know someone who’d be interested in using Objy, including some premium features for makers selling online they’d get free access to, shoot me a DM 🤓

2024.05.14 21:26 boilko J Flight - JFK-ICN - help

Hi all, I am looking to travel to Seoul next year with my wife. Seoul has a special place in our hearts and I am trying to surprise her with a business class flight from JFK. We are flexible in dates and I started looking this week knowing we can search up to 355 days in advance for some airlines (ANA) and 330 for other partner airlines (Asiana/Korean Air). Can anyone please advise why I'm unable to find anything on ANA for business flights? My understanding is that they release award flights at 9 AM JST on the dot, but the last few days I've been searching at that time and nothing changes when I search for a flight. I understand it can be super compeititve but are the tickets being picked that fast or am I missing something else or have they not been releasing flights? I also have constantly been checking Air Canada/United for Asiana flights for business but no luck so far. If anyone has any insight/advice, I would truly appreciate it. If this is in the wrong location, please let me know and I'm happy to start a new thread. TIA

2024.05.14 21:05 EJC28 Bills 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 2, Pick 33 - Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State:
NFL: After trading back twice on Thursday, the Bills stick at 33 and take a big, physical and athletically gifted target. Coleman isn't fast and isn't a deep threat, but he can win in a variety of ways. But who will Josh Allen's deep threat be? Stay tuned.
CBS Sports: C-. “X” receiver for a WR-needy team. Plays faster than his combine speed but doesn’t separate consistently and isn’t as good of a contested-catch wideout as his size and highlight-reel would indicate. Young though.
ESPN: After trading back twice, the Bills addressed the team's most significant position of need with Coleman, a big outside receiver with the ability to make splash plays -- 12 receiving touchdowns on contested catches since the start of 2022, second-most in the FBS, however, only a 31.7% contested catch percentage in 2023 -- to create separation and a release that general manager Brandon Beane described as "about as good as any." Beane acknowledged that while he's "probably not" going to run away from defenders, Buffalo feels his play speed is faster than the speed he showed at the combine -- 4.61 40-yard dash -- also noting that they liked his athletic ability that came from playing basketball. The Bills needed starting-level talent at outside receiver and Coleman, who turns 21 in May, fits into what Buffalo was looking for, while the team was still able to move back and add picks.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Believes that knitting is the original “Netflix and chill”.
Round 2, Pick 60 - Cole Bishop, S, Utah:
NFL: Safety was a big need for the Bills, and they go back to the Utes for help after taking Dalton Kincaid in Round 1 a year ago. Bishop is a very good athlete and field general who can play the post safety spot and cover a lot of ground. He played like the QB of the Utes' defense the past two years and could be a rookie starter for Buffalo.
CBS Sports: A-. Large, intimidating safety with magnificent movement skill. The QB of the defense. Aligns everywhere. Can wear many hats. Excelled as slot defender and vs. TEs in coverage and runs the alley on outside runs as well as any safety in the class. Ball skills and tackling must improve. Short arms. Need filled.
ESPN: Another pick for the Bills in the second round, another big need addressed. Drafting Bishop adds someone who can compete for a starting role this season, in addition to being a potential answer in the secondary after moving on from Jordan Poyer this offseason while Micah Hyde continues to contemplate retirement. Bishop has the ability to move all over the field, along with speed -- 4.45 40-yard dash -- and many of the qualities and instincts the Bills look for at the position.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He always weebles and wobbles, but he won’t ever fall down.
Round 3, Pick 95 - DeWayne Carter, DT, Duke:
NFL: When I first watched Carter at the Senior Bowl, I wrote in my notes: "rolling ball of knives." Carter's game doesn't have a lot of pretty to it, but he's a scheme disruptor with his low center of gravity, ferocious style and nasty demeanor.
CBS Sports: B+. Active, high-energy interior rusher who’s on the ground a bit more than what’s desired because of his frenetic style. But it also gets him to the football more often than most DTs. Flashes of swim move and spin just needs to utilize them more. Length is a plus and he works hard vs. run. Some power too. Fills niche need on Buffalo’s defensive front. Needs to use his length better on passing downs.
ESPN: Using the pick acquired via the trade with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, the Bills addressed another hole with Carter bringing depth at defensive tackle. The three-technique tackle will have the opportunity to continue to develop -- potentially as Ed Oliver's backup -- adding to a defensive tackle room that has limited young talent. The Bills didn't draft a defensive tackle last year due to the way the board fell, but the team was able to add to the rotation early this year.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Still says ‘weeeeeeeeeee’ when on a playground swing.
Round 4, Pick 128 - Ray Davis, RB, Kentucky:
NFL: Davis has overcome a lot to reach this level, and though he lacks long speed, he can be a Zack Moss-like player for the Bills. Davis' vision and wicked spin move have left a few defenders in a blender.
CBS Sports: C. Compact, older RB with plus stop-start ability, married to his feet well. Can deploy multiple cuts in a run to make defenders miss. Good, not amazing overall elusiveness though. Quicker than fast too. Will work hard to fight through contact. Has the skills to be fine complementary RB in NFL.
ESPN: With Davis, the Bills add a needed bigger back -- 5-foot-8, 211-pounds -- to pair with James Cook, but also someone who has the ability to catch the football (seven touchdown catches in 2023, tied with Najee Harris for the most by any SEC running back in a season in the last 25 years). Buffalo had a variety of veterans complimenting Cook last season, but Davis, 24, will give Buffalo a power runner and another younger presence in the room, albeit with plenty of collegiate experience from two seasons at Temple, two at Vanderbilt and one at Kentucky.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: This divorce is taking forever Erica why are you doing this?
Round 5, Pick 141 - Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, C, Georgia:
NFL: He's a tough, durable competitor with good anchor strength and three years starting experience for an SEC power, although SVP's lack of athleticism and smaller frame might make him a center-only projection.
CBS Sports: A-. Multi-year starter in the SEC with wrestler’s mentality. Battles through the whistle every snap. Mobility stands out. Explosive short-area quicks. Doesn’t have supreme length and clearly has to add weight/strength to his game. Methodically carries out run-game duties with ease. Second-level climbs etc. Older prospect but comes with high floor.
ESPN: This offseason, the Bills moved on from the team's starting center, Mitch Morse, and backup Ryan Bates. Last year's left guard Connor McGovern is set to slide over to the starting role. Adding Van Pran-Granger brings depth at center -- he allowed one sack his entire career in 1,337 pass-blocking plays, according to Sports Info Solutions -- and a strong candidate for the future at the position with significant starting experience (he started the last three seasons at center for Georgia).
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Is constantly telling people how different things are on Linux.
Round 5, Pick 160 - Edefuan Ulofoshio, LB, Washington:
NFL: In recent years, Buffalo has taken some interesting shots on linebackers in Rounds 3-7, and Ulofoshio continues that trend. He was one of the final players in my top 100 prospect list with his excellent speed, intense style and special teams experience, even if injuries have clouded his projection.
CBS Sports: A-. Six-year LB who starred for a long time as a full-time player in Washington’s program. Big-time tester and it shows on the field. Just takes a second to diagnose. Keen block-avoider as he’s sifting through traffic. Smooth athlete all around but doesn’t quite play to his workout. Reliable tackler who also flashed coverage skill down the seam. High-floor pick here. Crowded LB room.
ESPN: The Bills lost major special teams contributors this offseason, including linebacker Tyrel Dodson and defensive back Siran Neal, while captain linebacker Tyler Matakevich remains a free agent. Ulofoshio adds depth to the linebacker room, but perhaps more importantly, he can find a role on this roster as someone who can make an impact on special teams, an area of priority for the Bills. He has experience from playing six years at Washington, and while he dealt with multiple significant injuries in 2021 and 2022, he played every game in 2023 and earned Washington's Guy Flaherty Most Inspirational Award, the program's oldest and most prestigious honor.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: DROP TABLE card_facts; [please crash your pc, reader].
Round 5, Pick 168 - Javon Solomon, DE, Troy:
NFL: Solomon was a highly productive rusher the past few years in an unusual frame. He's short and undersized at 6-foot-1 and 247 pounds but with nearly 34-inch arms and huge hands. That extra length helps Solomon get to the quarterback, along with his quick burst and non-stop motor. An interesting study for sure.
CBS Sports: A. Burst, bend, speed predicated outside EDGE. Small frame but serious length. Unique build. Doesn’t get engulfed by bigger blockers as much as expected because of his speed-to-power conversion. Hand work is good, not amazing and can flatten to the QB. Motor hums on every play. Bills needed this type of quick winner on the outside.
ESPN: Solomon provides depth at edge rusher, another position of need for Buffalo. He led the FBS with 16 sacks last season and totaled 31.5 sacks since the start of 2021 (also most in the FBS), in addition to 49 career tackles for loss (third in Sun Belt history). Being a Day 3 selection, finding a special teams role will be important for Solomon. He'll also have the opportunity to develop behind the likes of Greg Rousseau, Von Miller -- someone that Solomon has modeled his game after -- and AJ Epenesa.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He once painted the walls of a Buccees stall, hasn’t been back since.
Round 6, Pick 204 - Tylan Grable, OT, UCF:
NFL: He's a converted Jacksonville State tight end who became a solid left tackle the past two years at UCF. Grable is a quality athlete with great length and potential to be groomed at center, even if he's still learning how to play O-line.
CBS Sports: B. Height and length type at OT who probably plays guard at the next level. Smooth athleticism and can sustain speed throughout the play. Not just quick. Hands are more active and heavy than they are accurate. Good depth add here with positional versatility. Can grow into his frame.
ESPN: Grable started his collegiate career as a walk-on tight end at Jacksonville State, but transitioned to offensive line starting in 2019 and then started 27 games at left tackle while at UCF. He will compete for a roster spot in an offensive line room with veteran players, and said he's prepared to make a switch to a different position if needed. General manager Brandon Beane said that Grable is "gonna have to continue to work on his lower body strength, his power to move guys in the run game, but has great feet you know for pass pro."
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Still refers to Google DUO as Google MEET.
Round 6, Pick 219 - Daequan Hardy, CB, Penn State:
NFL: His return skills might be what keeps him in the league, as Hardy lacks the mass and strength to hold up full time on defense, but sub-4.4 speed is always appealing in a DB.
CBS Sports: A-. Case for most sudden, twitch-up athlete at CB in the class. Super speedy too. Plus recovery talent. Explosiveness in every movement. Not always sticky in coverage but does have high-caliber reps. Check Ohio State game. Erratic tackling and hard to get off blockers because of his size. Chippy in trying to make plays on screens.
ESPN: Hardy brings depth at the cornerback position and skills as a returner. In 2023, he tied the Penn State record for most punt return touchdowns in a season (two) and finished seventh in punt return average (14.6) in school history. Beane noted that if not for the new return rules, he's not sure if they would have picked Hardy, but "this guy can play one of the backup corner spots, but also he's a really nice returner." Buffalo lost multiple players at the returner spot in free agency, and with more focus on it going into this season, Hardy will have the opportunity to compete for the role.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Owns the complete N64 collection including a CIB Conkers.
Round 7, Pick 221 - Travis Clayton, OT, England:
NFL: The Brit, who is 6-foot-7 and 301 pounds with 35-inch arms, ran a 4.81-second 40-yard dash at South Florida's pro day and immediately put himself on scouts' radars late in the process. He's a total project but might be a terrific find with some seasoning, thanks to those unusual athletic traits.
CBS Sports: C+. At 6-foot-7 and 300 pounds with 35-inch arms and a sub 5.00 40-yard dash, this is a ridiculous athlete who is new to football from London.
ESPN: Despite the Bills never seeing Clayton play football, he's an intriguing addition to develop. The initial projection is as an offensive tackle for the 6-foot-7, 303-pound boxer and former rugby player from England after offensive line coach Aaron Kromer came away from watching tape of his workouts. Notably, he ran a 4.79 40-yard dash, faster than all offensive linemen who competed at the combine in the last 10 years. He'll have an opportunity to show the Bills exactly how his skills will translate and what he may be capable of in the NFL, especially as he does not count for a roster spot as part of the International Player Pathway program.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Just like a fantasy draft, the true sleepers can be found in round seven.

2024.05.14 21:01 xXBlueFire New PC for my father

Hello everyone 😊
My sister, mother and I bought my father a new monitor for his birthday (32” WQHD 165Hz Monitor) - I know he would NEVER need the 165 Hz. The only game he plays is a 15 years(?) old shooter, but he wanted a bigger screen and the 165 Hz were just there ^^
Now his old PC (~10years) can’t support more than 60Hz also my father was recently complaining more and more that the PC is extremely slow + Windows 10 is loosing support soon so we decided is probably time for a new one.
The new PC should again last for around 10 years so I searched for some parts and would like to hear your opinions an that configuration. Maybe some advice on parts that would be better
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G
Mainboard: MSI B550M PRO-VDH (I really wanted that USB3.2 Gen 2 Connector, so we can get him a front panel with fast USB-C ports)
RAM: 16GB G.Skill RipJaws V DDR4-3600 CL18
SSD: 1TB WD Blue SN580 M.2 (I know the CPU only supports PCIe 3.0, but its cheaper that other PCIe 3.0 SSDs)
PSU: 500 Watt be quiet! System Power 9 CM Modular 80+ Bronze (In case he will need a graphics card, maybe he becomes a gamer in the next years :’D )
(We would reuse his old case)

2024.05.14 20:28 Wardez Ran a throwing net using TechDisc to track stats all week at LVC. Here's a data dump!

Ran a throwing net using TechDisc to track stats all week at LVC. Here's a data dump!
There were over 3,000 throws! The data set I'm posting here I kept to 2,000 throws since that's the limit of the throws page (unless someone can tell me a better way to open that up). And it's for throws from Tuesday the 7th of May till Saturday the 11th. I didn't include Sunday because we had a lot less action on that day.
The net was open to anyone and everyone who wanted to try it. We had a leaderboard and fun stuff setup like DDO island challenges and driving range top golf bullseye stuff. Was really fun.
But for me, as a nerd who loves stats, it was fascinating running the throwing net and watching everyone's approach to throwing with TechDisc. For a lot of people, I'd say around 85% it was their first time ever throwing one. I've had a TD since October of last year so I was happy to step up to help run it.
Some takeaways I had:
  • People tend to throw low/flat into nets, even after I had tweaked the net setup to have plenty of space to throw up high. I had a pop-up tent with a huge net wrapped around it. I ended up having to put a target for reference to how high people should be throwing to be above 6 degrees of launch and most were surprised at how high that was.
  • The harder people try to BH to beat their top speed, the slower they usually became save for a few rare instances (pros). Most AMs and even some pros were surprised at being able to match or exceed their BH speed without seemingly trying very hard. Forcing more FH speed was successful about 75% of the time.
  • The wide spread of spin rate was definitely interesting to watch. One could tell when a fast throw was happening but there was no real way to tell how fast the spin was happening of course. It's that little extra bit of sauce that we just can't see. It definitely seemed related to overall looseness/limberness. Younger throwers had naturally higher spin.
  • Typically for BH the more I saw someone stance out and almost lean back the faster their throw would be. Most AMs tended to be releasing with their leading shoulder over their leading foot or even a little past it. While power throwers were definitely leaning back more almost like a baseball swing would be. Even after seeing that and trying to replicate with my own throws, it was pretty difficult to do. It's definitely an aspect of throwing that doesn't seem to be emphasized too much.
  • Opposite arm develops quickly with a Tech Disc. Since I've had my TD I was pretty astonished at how quickly I could get my left arm up to a good speed. The instant feedback is definitely key. I went from 43 to now throwing 54 pretty regularly. Most people at LVC found the same. And they were super surprised at how quickly they could get their opposite arm speed up in big bunches of speed. The spin is a whole other ordeal tho of course. It was hard for anyone to get over 700 RPMs, but some did manage to.
  • TD is addictive and could potentially lead to overstress especially in a leaderboard event setting like we had. Groups of friends got into challenge squabbles and would just keep wanting to beat each other or the leaderboard. We ended up having to put in a 5 throw per-turn limit. Be careful out there!
  • Everyone really enjoyed the hell out of the device and especially the DDO 16 island hole. But if someone's power made it difficult to reach the island I'd set them up with a closer lie in the lay-up zone to the right to try and approach from around 150. Was a lot of fun. People really got a kick out of realizing that you could not only tee off but also approach and putt out. For reference you needed at least 54mph or so (unless you got really clever with angles and such) to hit the island in the simulator.
  • Some players got wise to the situation and actually used our net and TD to get calibrated for the day before their rounds and also to see how their speed was after the rounds. Some put it to very good use I'd say. A lot of players were surprised that even after a few hours of throwing they were still able to hit decent numbers, but their spin rate was down, or angles weren't as dialed etc. of course. I will say one other thing: Connor Rock was the only pro on the lead card, final day, that visited us and had fun chucking in the sim. He threw 70mph in flip flops. Also, Sofia Donnecke stepped up to our net and threw 60mph and hit the island on her first try.
Oh yeah and here's a link to the 86mph 360 FH that Scott Stokely threw: https://techdisc.com/throws/1715377522
Thanks for reading, enjoy the screengrabs I got, and let me know if there are any other detailed stats or sets you'd like to see!

2024.05.14 20:10 Zestyclose-Ad9165 First time editing large project - Need advice please

Hi everyone!
I'm directing a 'indy' fashion commercial soon and because of budget problems I will have to edit. I have editing experience but not with large files like the ones we will have.
We're shooting pro res on an ALEXA sxt.
I was thinking of buying 2 Samsung T7 SSD 2TO - one for storage and editing, the other for backup.
It's a 2min video and we're only shooting one day. I'm a bit worried about offloading speed on location and potential editing problems too. I'm using the free version of Davinci, on a MACBOOK PRO, M2...
Last question, I also have a spare Seagate expansion hard drive HDD 2to. Could that be used for a third backup or will it not be fast enough?
Thank you so much, I'm a bit worried and would love your help

2024.05.14 19:59 Puginator Google rolls out its most powerful AI models as competition from OpenAI heats up

Google is using its annual developer conference to showcase what the company is calling its lightest and most efficient artificial intelligence models.
At Google I/O on Tuesday, the company announced Gemini 1.5 Flash, the newest addition to the Gemini model series.
“We heard from developers that they wanted something faster and even more cost effective,” said Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, in a press briefing.
The unveiling comes as tech companies increasingly refocus their product development and rollouts around generative AI, which is of particular importance to Google because the new tools give consumers more advanced and creative ways to access online information compared to traditional web search.
OpenAI on Monday launched a new AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT, along with a new user interface. The new model, GPT-4o, is twice as fast as GPT-4 Turbo and half the cost, the company said.
Google also announced an improved Gemini 1.5 Pro model, which has the ability to make sense of multiple large documents — 1,500-pages total — or summarize 100 emails, according to a vice president working on Gemini.
Gemini 1.5 Pro will soon be able to handle an hour of video content, or codebases with more than 30,000 lines, Hsiao said.
“You can quickly get answers and insights about dense documents, like figuring out the details of the pet policy in your rental agreement or comparing key arguments of multiple long research papers,” Hsiao said.
OpenAI’s latest upgrade, announced this week, brings with it improved quality and speed of ChatGPT for 50 different languages. It will also be available via OpenAI’s application programming interface (API), allowing developers to begin building applications using the new model immediately, executives said.
With 35 languages, Google says Gemini 1.5 Pro has a 2 million token window, which measures context and indicates how much information the model is able to process at once. The new model has improved local reasoning, planning and image understanding, company executives said.
“It offers the longest context window of any foundational model yet,” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in the press briefing. At the event, he gave an example of a parent asking Gemini to summarize all recent emails from their child’s school.
Gemini 1.5 Pro will initially be available for testing in Workspace Labs. Gemini 1.5 Flash will be available for testing and in Vertex AI, which is Google’s machine learning platform that lets developers train and deploy AI applications.

2024.05.14 19:55 vap0rtranz NotebookLM upgrades announced: Gemini 1.5 Pro, 500k words

I just read the news via Google I/O that NotebookLM folks have upgraded their model to Gemini 1.5 Pro and increased sources to 500k words. Snippet:
"NotebookLM is now using Gemini 1.5 Pro, Google’s most capable model. You should see a meaningful increase in the quality of the responses. We’ve also increased the word limit per source to 500k words, and you can now have 50 sources per Notebook [...]"
I re-tested some notebooks. One of my "benchmarks" is a needle-in-the-haystack from sources that are long & dense, like the IPCC's climate reports. Answers keep getting better, so NotebookLM has become my go-to for fast, public Q&A of some docs. I'd prefer something local for other things but for non-private docs it's fast & accurate.

Ok so im trying to move onto AM5 and all the beauty that comes with so this is going to be a budget 4k or 2k gaming build. (possible new monitor 27 mini-led 4k 160hz HDR1000) if not (current monitor 27 inch mini-led 1440p @ 165hz HDR1000)

GRAPHICS: 6800XT games 172% is a record breaking 3D score, it's almost off the scale. This GPU can handle all 3D at very high resolutions and ultra detail levels. Boot Drive71.9% is a good SSD score. NOW
Worth the upgrade and transition to 4K gaming? or keep waiting? If i stay at 1440P i dont see the need to upgrade the whole pc as the 6800XT is a monster in that category but im trying to take the leap into 4k mini-led 120hz+ gaming eventually. Monitors keep dropping in price and from what i saw today GPU's a tad bit also. Thinking of saying goodbye to my AMD friends in the GPU department if i go 4K to help with those 4k shadows and reflections and ray tracing if not i can maybe swap my 6800xt for a 7900xtx with a 240hz 1440p monitor and dominate 1440p gaming and call it a day and that way id only have to buy 1 monitor and 1 GPU and sell the used ones rather than the PC as a whole or piece by piece of a whole PC..
Thoughts, Comments? Suggestions? Substitutions?

2024.05.14 18:27 Neverbethesky One-man IT contractor, looking for something more practical than my XPS 9500

I currently have an XPS 15 9500 (i7-10750H 32GB RAM 1TB SDD and a 1650Ti), connected to two 27" 1440p monitors when I'm at the office.
I got it before I became a one-man IT contractor and so it's a little bit impractical on account of only having 3x USB-C slots, one of which has to be used for charging... having no ethernet or standard USB ports is a pain.
It also thermal throttles a LOT, so it's actually not that fast most of the time, but I also really love the form factor.
Most of the time I've got a tonne of Chrome tabs open, Outlook, Office, my RMM software, Evernote/OneNote, often some kind of streaming on the laptop screen... I also use Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere moderately and in the evenings I do a little gaming too... nothing super high-res. I also run some VMs too.
I really, REALLY like the big trackpad. It's the best I've ever used.
Basically I'm just looking for something that is closer to a mobile workstation, without being a mobile workstation. Something solid, decent size screen (15/16"), powerful, decent graphics card, but not a big clunky gaming machine. Needs to look pro and be road-safe (i.e. to and from my office several times per day). Oh and something that has a numpad, I miss those.
Thanks!

2024.05.14 17:54 Ahole4Sure Auto-Update Server on Docker but not Node

So I have been humbled over the last few days. I am a DIY'er for many things - computer, networking, mecahnical, automobile, etc. Sometimes it is very rewarding but often humbling!! I was having some file issues with my Emby / Sonarr / Radarr setup so it was suggested to try Tdarr The setup wasn't as easy as I hoped. I setup the server on my Synology NAS using a docker in Container Manager. With some dificulty I finally got Nodes running and appear to be transcoding on both a spare Windows PC and a Macbook Pro. Fast forward to this AM , went to check on progress neither Node reamined connected. There was an error that there was a mismatch between the server and node versions. It appeared that the Docker server had "auto-updated" in the middle of the night , while neither Node updated. What I find strange is that I usually have to "go to some trouble", like using WatchTower to get docker things to update. Is there an explanation or fix? I would almost rather the server not update automatically if the Nodes won't update automatically??

2024.05.14 17:32 K5_489 Do <$500 DSLRs handle high heat environments better than GoPros for amateur recording?

In the world of "there's a difference between photos and snapshots", I'm full on the snapshot guy, lol. I have ZERO aspirations of becoming the next YouTube/TikTok/whatever star. I'm a 40 something guy that builds old cars and trucks in his spare time, and occasionally I get people asking for photos/videos of the stuff I'm doing in the garage.
I've been using an old Canon EOS 30D for the photos, which is MUCH nicer than using a phone, but it doesn't do video. Setting up a phone on a tripod is a PITA to get good video without being in the way. Tried a GoPro 7 Black a few years ago, but it overheats fast in my hot Phoenix garage. Not uncommon to see 90*F+ temps in there.
I've been thinking about upgrading the old Canon to something newer like the R100 anyways, and since these DSLRs can do video now too, it's like killing two birds with one stone...but can it handle doing video in the heat for any length of time, say 30 mins of 1080p sitting on a tripod? I'm not 100% stuck on Canon, just started there as I already have other Canon stuff.

2024.05.14 17:14 Aggressive_Claim_437 Talk me out of my FOMO for the 2024 13” iPad Pro!

This is a lighthearted post and in no way in my right mind do I plan on upgrading to the 2024 13” iPad Pro when I have a perfectly fine 2022 12.9” M2 chip 6th Gen iPad Pro which does everything i need it to. It’s blazing fast and the miniLED display is gorgeous!
Notice how i said “in my right mind” lol. Apple has a way with their marketing to make you want their latest and greatest product no matter which version you have and no matter how capable it still is. I will stay strong and not give in, but man that 5.1 mm form factor looks absolutely stunning and is probably amazing to hold and the OLED, although the miniLED display is beautiful, can’t compare to OLED especially with the brightness the dual OLED display is putting out!
Who else is standing strong with me and holding onto their 2022 iPad Pro’s?

2024.05.14 17:09 Aggressive_Product61 Let’s address English gaslighting

Why is even complaining about English is now forbidden? If you can’t handle the cheese it’s your fault. When you complain they ask like; 1. Why didn’t you scout their base, like forget about sheep, just sit in the English base and scout, track the vills , track the king. The problem is we can scout and know what type cheese they are cooking and can’t do sh.. about it. 2. Why didn’t you make units,? You have to make a Baracks then spears to counter the free self healing knight, while simultaneously sending army to English base before they drop the white tower on their gold, or the 2nd tc worst if it is kings palace. Usually by the time your units walk there they are building the landmark with 20 vills, then you have to face the castle knights, while they double produce vills or units.
  1. why didn’t you rush him in feudal, same reason, and you can’t dive English base without a big enough army, and you can’t make big enough army before they rush castle.
  2. Why didn’t you out boom, well, they have a knight in my base then followed by a white tower and trebs Or knight followed by MMA diving my TC
  3. You’re just a low level player. If you’re a low level player you shouldn’t be tortured with a broken build orders. Not everyone wants to play the easy, most broken Strat and level to conquer. For example Drongo, always encourages using the most broken build order to conquer.
  4. Win rates are still 50% ish so it’s ok. Win rates does not show what Strats they used. So if let’s say 99% of games against are so frustrating and they manage to counter the 50% cheese because the brain-dead English player loss the knight too soon, That does not make the civ ok.
So let’s address that unless you’re a pro, English is broken and it takes no skill to follow a simple build order and auto win.
I saw some guy justifying by calculating walking time to drop a white tower , so the opponent should have countered English. Just gaslighting the problem. Those calculations matters only on pro level and below that level English is a cancer.
Making the beginner civ also the most broken civ with multiple paths of hard-to-counter builds is not good as it increases the amount of players cheese with these strats. Of course this may retain some more new player as they level up fast and increase their satisfaction with the game by playing just English (maybe that’s the idea behind this by the developers) but it puts the civ in a weird spot for mid level players since it doesn’t get nerfed if pros don’t complain.
These builds should be addressed: 1. King + MMA rush 2. King + white tower drop 3. King + no time to counter castle rush
How to nerf:
  1. Make English king a self healing horsemen or keep it a knight but make self healing an expensive upgrade like for French.
  2. Keep either feudal MMA strong or LB, not both
  3. Make English TC fire normal like others, or remove that stupid bell and vill arrows something’s got to go.

Hey there! I apologise in advance for the rather long post. I just wanna supercharge my PC some. GPUs are expensive and I've been looking at the ASUS RTX 4090, but I'm honestly thinking to prep everything else and improve it and wait for the 5000 series, potentially. The usual issues, some framerate drops, dips, stutters here and there. Also tired of how hot the AMD seems to run. I just want to future-proof my PC and give myself a little treat for my upcoming birthday. I want a very strong CPU and from what I've read, the i7 should more than handle that. I assume an i9 is overkill.
I don't know much about MoBos, but I wanted a new, high quality one for the future Intel CPU, that can accommodate the usual RGB stuff and that would have enough ports in the back to match the current MoBo (yes, even the surround sound ports...). Speaking of the CPU, that's one of the main things I want. Supercharge the performance, lower the temps. Checking the stats on the currently selected MoBo, I see it has more NVMe slots. I have two of those. An Intel 660p Series 1TB PCI Express 3.0 x4 M.2 that runs Windows and a Samsung 980 PRO with Heatsink 1TB. Checking the MoBo, I really like the look, design and features. I see there's an extreme version with a nicer RGB screen, but I assume it's not worth the pricey premium for more eye-candy.
RAM-wise, I am drawing a bit of a blank, as all I know is I want 32, or even 64 gigs, fast speeds, the new stuff that's made for these MoBos. I've gotten hooked on the RGB stuff, but I don't know much about the speeds and qualities of these new ones. Corsair seems like a safe bet, although I've seen at least two that appear rather similar in performance, but varying in price.
Cooler-wise, I posted my case here to figure things out. My current AIO is sitting on the top bit, it's 240mm, I'm pretty sure. So the question there is if my choice is okay. Do I need 280mm? Would 240mm suffice? Alternatively, would it be better to get a front-facing one that's three fans? My issue then would be that all the intake for the entire PC would be through that AIO radiator. Case has the original fans in, pretty much, just with the added cooler on top. Should I go for some new thermal paste? I have this 4 gram Arctic MX-4 that I've used a bunch, bought in 2019. I am honestly starting to feel as if it dries out quickly, or doesn't conduct as well? Nothing visually wrong with it when applying it before, as far as I can tell. It just feels that my CPU has started running hotter for no good reason, recently. I am not ruling out just the dust build-up, since this case feels a bit more "open" and is due some internal cleaning.
Sort of a TL;DR here!
I posted the PSU, to make sure it could handle all this stuff, on top of a potential, future GPU. I would hope so, since I specifically chose the Seasonic to futureproof that angle a bit. So... lots of questions, I suppose! Are my options good? Quality-wise, ports, etc. Are there better alternatives? I wouldn't mind cheaper stuff, of course, but my focus right now is in treating myself, providing performance, quality and stability. So, trying to figure out if the current parts list is good. Would that MoBo work with my port requirements? Would it play nice with my two NVMe SSDs? Cooler. Is it good enough? Should I go for a front 3-fan, or just keep it as a fat 2-fan? Should I grab some new thermal paste of some kind? Good quality and RGB options? CPU good enough to handle anything at current and future levels? RAM, what should I go for? 32 gigs, 64? Requirements are speed, RGB and potentially futureproofing the build some.
I want to thank all you potential readers kindly for checking out the posts! Basically, advice on parts, quality, money, placement in PC! And thank you in advance for anyone that chooses to engage and offer advice!
