2024.05.11 10:11 Zealousideal_Fan2587 UAL1286 tonight 5/10. ORD-SFO.

What an awesome flight. We were delayed due to flow restrictions, BUT… First time on the A321neo did not disappoint. Best pilots I have ever had, shoutout to cappy David and f/o Blake for the insanely funny commentary, keeping us updated about EDCT times(pilot here), and telling us about the northern lights. Oh, and smooth landing. Flight attendants were pretty average but I mean look at this view.

2024.05.06 05:01 IceRose39 911 Dream Team - Who would you pick from each 911 show for the ultimate Fire House team?

If you took all of the current and prior 911 and 911: Lone Star characters to make 1 dream team, who would you pick?
Captain (Pick One):
Firefighters (Pick Two):
Probie (Pick One):
EMT Captain (Pick One):
EMTs (Pick Two):
If I missed someone feel free to add them, I put the possible options as a starting point, but some of these characters can take on different roles and there are other characters from flashbacks (*cough* Tommy Kindard *cough*) that you might want to use. The EMT Captain is only a role in Lone Star, but since there were two characters, I figured I'd just include it.

2024.05.03 18:23 Atwillim My thoughts/blursed review of my first DPW show I've watched (You Already Know 2022)

Wrote it down for myself and thought some of you might be amused or find it endearing to relive some of the moments.
DPW You Already Know 2022
[Kidd Bandit vs Ho Ho Lun] Johnny is afraid to name "The Falcon Arrow" Kidd Bandit did an Anime Run People's elbow. I have half a tear in each of my eyes, enjoying it moisturising my contacts.
[Diego Hill vs Lucky Ali vs Donnie Ray] Diego Hill is smooth like butter I've never seen an imploding splash, like Lucky Ali's Diego "Did I win" :D
[Rachel Rose vs vs KZT] What a great honor for that simp guy. KZT so far has the best mean face on the show. I appreciate Rachel Rose
[Battle Royal] God bless DPW's partnership with the Amazons
[Colby Corino vs Gringo Loco] Appreciate the La Parka tribute gear. Colby looks and talks like a star. That tiger feint into Tornado DDT was so precise, *chef's kiss" So are boys commenting as it's happening or was it recorded afterwards? WHERE ARE THEY? edit: I'm pretty sure it's like since tank asked if he should rip Blake's head off right after it was contemplated on commentary. I appreciate Johnny's Danzig shout outs through out the show. The Moonsault... I don't understand that Top Rope Mid Air Switch Powerbomb, my palms are sweaty" af, tears are back. I really need to replace my contacts, I shouldn't rely on emotion of seeing greatness to moisturize. "WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS GUY" Bro... what a match O_O
[Calvin Tankman vs Blake Christian] I'd love to know how much Tankman deadlifts, he has 3 Toni Storms in his hips. The strikes are insane in this match - knees, kicks, forearms, headbutts - these blokes aint fucking around. This is some GuntheIlja shit Bangerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
[Yuu vs Ryo Mizunami] Didn't watch it due to time cuts.
[Andrew Everett vs BOJACK] Andrew Everett has a presence of a 15 ton metal oil tank. I hope I get to see BOJACK vs TANKMAN at same point. Will Andrew Everett chokeslam BOJACK? Hearing all the chants in the beginning - it's so beautiful how fans are behind the company (also makes me a bit sad AEW) BOJACK wtf did you just do with your body?! The sense of danger in this match fromm BOJACK possibly decapitating Andrew at any second is palpable. Andrew Everett's smile is disgusting and his selling is incredible. Andrew Everett looks very handsome when he isn't smiling. THE PPPPPPOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUNCEWWW Insane Pump Handle setup by BOJACK Ok, so Everett can apparently fly, like actually fly. Must be awesome to save on all the travelling costs. Well done boys, respect.

2024.04.30 16:11 BaysideJ Seeking Tips for Indirect Cooking

I've been using charcoal for a few years now only to sear (mostly with sous vide precooked meats). I just bought a used Weber Premium kettle with a Slow n Sear insert, drip pan and new SnS grate. I've got a multi-probe thermometer that I plan to use: one probe for the meat, one for the ambient heat at the grate. I've got two chimneys (small and large) that I ignite over a propane burner. Up until now, I've been aiming for the highest heat for only as long as it takes to sear the meat. So that means filling the small chimney with briquettes and heating over the propane for ten minutes, dumping into the grill and searing for no more than a few minutes per side and done.
Now I'm looking to do something completely different: achieve and maintain a lower temp for indirect cooking for an extended period of time. Lots of technique to learn. And I don't know what I don't know.
Do I start a smaller amount of briquettes and plan to add more (unstarted) briquettes as I go? How else might my starting process be different for this mode of cooking?
I've read that one should leave the lower vents wide open and adjust the temp by using the upper vents. I've also read the exact opposite. I assume the lower vents are the sweepers that cover the slots on the bottom of the kettle. Since these aren't directly seen when cooking, it seems to me that one can only guesstimate how open they are.
I assume the charcoal side of the SnS should be opposite the vent in the dome. I'm not sure where on the grate I should place my ambient temp probe.
What else should I be thinking about. TIA

2024.04.29 22:56 SuspiciousElection45 Getting revenge on a toxic 'friend'

Years ago I stupidly became friends with this toxic bitch let's call her ''C'', now a few years before I was diagnosed with MS and lost the ability to walk so I lost pretty much all my friends and my whole social life, I was lonely and couldn't even make friends or socialise because I was so disabled. I got a part time job and met ''C'' and we became friends. All was going well and I was getting out and mingling finally despite still being disabled. Over time I notice she was selfish, rude and kinda crazy, for example walking up the stairs to a bar we drank at she would roll her eyes if she saw me struggling to climb them, one time when she invited me out for drinks with her friends I texted her saying I was too ill from my part time job to attend and she text back 'that's why you have no friends'. Then the kicker happened, New Years Eve was approaching and she invited me to a house party (where we have NYE everyone goes fancy dress) I said I didn't know where the house was to attend and she said 'it's fine, I'll pick you up on the way to it.' So come NYE there I stood outside my building dressed as a chimney sweeper from Mary Poppins standing in the rain awaiting ''C''. I text her, nothing, messaged her on FB, nothing, tried ringing her, nothing. Text. Ring. FB. etc etc again and again. NOTHING. So I went back up stairs to drink myself into oblivion watching movies as it was NYE. I saw her fb posts of the party where she was dressed as a Air Stewardess having a whale of a time. I was pissed!
I never called her out on it because I was lonely and disabled and really held onto anyone who gave me the time of day. ''C'' then signed up for a charity run, she asked me for a donation I gave just £5, months later I asked her sister how ''C'''s charity run went and she said 'What run, my sister is a liar'. I approached ''C'' and she said she did (she's a compulsive liar) and when I called her out she said she'll repay me, she never did. There were lies covering up lies in other things she claimed, at one point she told everyone in the town she was going to London to have a meeting with the PM Boris Johnson about mental health/illness, she also said she was moving to Bristol to work for the BBC but then it turned out she just moved to a town a few towns over to work in a bar. and on and on and on.
She would arrange nights and drinks with me from time to time but ALWAYS stood me up so I decided enough was enough, i blocked her on fb and I had her mobile number and with the help of Google I searched for hundreds of companies and typing in 'Request Call Backs' and signed her up to be called back from companies such as; Sky, BP oil, every single energy Company, PPI financial claims, Banks, Dog Shelters, Sex clinics, Dog Adoption Centres, Cat adoption centres, donkey sanctuaries, the bank of Islam, every bank, every loan company, every money lending company, Amazon, UK Immigration solicitors, as many solicitor companies as I could find, lawyers, accountants, credit card companies, debt collectors, stamp collectors, pony clubs, horse riding centres, maternity/pregnancy aid groups, yoga clubs, archery clubs, golf clubs, strip clubs. YOU NAME IT I SIGNED HER UP FOR NUISANCE CALL BACKS, I wanted my pound of flesh. I cut all contact with her, I saw through Whatsapp that after a few months she had changed her number as her account went blank meaning she had probably got rid of her number and got a new one so I hope it was my doing and that the harassment forced her hand (I don't know if it worked as I cut all contact but in my mind I like to think it did so it gave me redemption)
but Karma is a beautiful stunning thing, she had started working in the most popular bar of our town and she ended up getting sacked because she was r@cist to a customer and barred from the establishment, not long after she ended up getting a job ferrying tourists in an airport shuttle bus and on one occasion she drove the vehicle through a local cake business sign and instead of owning up to the owner and accepting responsibility she drove off leaving the scene of the crime, she was reported and sacked AGAIN from her job and pretty much blacklisted from most of the businesses in the area. She then cheated on her boyfriend with a married man with kids where she ended up trashing his flat and smashing his window when sh!t hit the fan and everything was revealed and the man's wife wrote an entire FB post on the local FB community for EVERYONE to read exposing her infidelity and even the husband posted about her trashing his flat and smashing his window.
Last I heard she moved away from the area (this all took place on a small community (2400 population) island off Cornwall, UK so everyone knew EVERYONE) and moved to the mainland, met a guy and is now having children with him, she will make the most toxic Karen mother the world will ever see.
Me on the other hand, I have regained my health and have zero symptoms not only can I walk I can now jog/run and walk for hours, I live drama-free in a big happy house I own with a fluffy dog and I have NO toxic, vile people in my life. It really is bliss.

2024.04.26 15:59 ConsciousRun6137 10 Prophecies You Likely Don’t Know

10 Prophecies You Likely Don’t Know
Prophesies and predictions are fascinating things. They make us wonder about the future and to seek out fulfillment in past events. Most of us are familiar with Nostradamus and his predictions – hundreds of books have been written about them, in fact, so rather than rehash a tired old topic, we are presenting a list of prophesies that, hopefully, most of you have never heard of.
  1. Alois Irlmaier

https://preview.redd.it/zq904rulvtwc1.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=36b10fa9e3d7f4fa641e2a4b8f77b032e84b46f5
Irlmaier was a simple German man who, in the 1950s, made predictions of a third world war. This is a small sampling of what he claimed the third world war would look like:
“Everything calls peace. Shalom! Then it will occur, a new Middle East war suddenly flares up, big naval forces are facing hostility in the Mediterranean. The situation is strained, but the actual firing spark is set on fire in the Balkans: I see a ‘large one’ falling, a bloody dagger lies beside him –then impact is on impact. Two men kill a third high-ranked. They were paid by other people. One of the murderers is a small black man, the other a little bit taller, with bright-coloured hair. I think it will be at the Balkans, but I cannot say it exactly. Immediately the revenge comes from across the large water. However the yellow dragon invades in Alaska and Canada at the same time. But he comes not far. And then it rains a yellow dust in a line. When the golden city is destroyed, it begins…” Most interesting in these predictions is the fact that he believes the war will begin in the Middle East which seems certain to many people in the 21st century.
  1. Hildegard von Bingen

https://preview.redd.it/mtp9dch4wtwc1.png?width=240&format=png&auto=webp&s=2feb9d367e51ca81a2fb00e53917e697b3325811
I am a great fan of St Hildegard, a polymath nun from the 12th century and, while she is very well known for her incredible contributions to classical music and literature, she is not so well known for her prophesies (of which there were many). In one prediction it appears she is referring to the destruction of the United States:
”Before the Comet comes, many nations, the good excepted, will be scoured with want and famine. The great nation in the ocean that is inhabited by people of different tribes and descent by an earthquake, storm and tidal waves will be devastated. It will be divided, and in great part submerged. That nation will also have many misfortunes at sea, and lose its colonies in the east through a Tiger and a Lion. The Comet by its tremendous pressure, will force much out of the ocean and flood many countries, causing much want and many plagues. [After the] great Comet, the great nation will be devastated by earthquakes, storms, and great waves of water, causing much want and plagues. The ocean will also flood many other countries, so that all coastal cities will live in fear, with many destroyed. All sea coast cities will be fearful and many of them will be destroyed by tidal waves, and most living creatures will be killed and even those who escape will die from a horrible disease.”
She also predicted that peace would return to Earth when the French throne is restored (very interesting when you consider that it had not been destroyed at that time).
  1. Baba Vanga

https://preview.redd.it/38d6fw9gwtwc1.png?width=400&format=png&auto=webp&s=0f50e2ba3cba0a95e209b90f778841254a1510a1
Baba Vanga was a blind Bulgarian woman (born 1911, died 1996) who was a herbalist and alleged mystic who made many predictions for the future. She became incredibly popular due to her so-called mystical powers. When she died huge crowds attended her funeral. Among her many predictions she claimed that by 4599 man would achieve immortality and that less than 100 years later we would begin assimilating with the aliens we meet on the hundreds of planets we will have populated. She claimed that in 4509 man will become sufficiently developed that he will begin to communicate with God directly. In 2221, while searching for extra-terrestrial life man will come into contact with something truly terrible (though she didn’t state what). Closer to our own time she predicted a change in the Earth’s orbit in 2023. Curiously she predicted the beginning of World War III in 2010, which does not obviously appear to have happened – though her followers say the machinations may be in place for this to happen.
  1. The True Third Secret

https://preview.redd.it/11w7xsenwtwc1.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=a4dd01d37ffebb954c5ea4791272dd8b870501d5
On June 26, 2000, the well known third secret of Fatima was revealed by Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), accompanied by a theological commentary. The secret referred to a Pope being killed and a city in ruins. What most people don’t know is that during the many years in which the secret was hidden from all but a few eyes, portions of it (and hints at what it contained) were leaked, by people who had either read the secret or spoken to Sister Lucia (the seer who penned it – pictured above). The leaked information did not correspond with the secret released by the Vatican. Consequently a large number of people believe that the Vatican document is a fake, released to avoid the scandal that would occur if the real secret got out. Purportedly the real secret refers to an apostasy in the Church starting with the Pope (in other words, the Pope/Popes would stop teaching the Catholic faith and fall into error). It also describes a council which will pervert the Church (believed by many to be Vatican II which reversed many traditional Catholic principles and beliefs). This was known for at least forty years prior to the release of the Vatican version of the Secret. What is most interesting is that Sister Lucia said the secret had to be released by 1960, or after her death (whichever came first). Why she chose that specific year is unknown but, curiously, the Vatican II council was started in 1962, with both Popes of the council (John XXIII and Paul VI) saying that they would not release the third secret. Another related prophesy is also very interesting; Pope Pius XII (the Pope prior to John XXIII and the II Vatican Council) said: “We believe that the present hour is a dread phase of the events foretold by Christ. It seems that darkness is about to fall on the world. Humanity is in the grip of a supreme crisis.”
  1. Ursula Southeil Prophesies

https://preview.redd.it/g5aw7gsuwtwc1.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f3357242c62f15f90b9c5c7acd2018081b1ad79
Ursula Southeil (Mother Shipton, 1488–1561) is most likely to be the best known prophet on this list. There is much modern debate about the veracity of her predictions, but whether or not she wrote the most famous one attributed to her, she was known as a prophetess at the time of Samuel Pepys, as he wrote about the Royal family discussing her predictions. Here are some of her more interesting prophesies:
  1. A carriage without horse will go, Disaster fill the world with woe. In London, Primrose Hill shall be In centre hold a bishops sea.
  2. Around the world men’s thoughts will fly, Quick as the twinkling of an eye. And water shall great wonders do, How strange, and yet it shall come true.
  3. In water, iron then shall float As easy as a wooden boat. Gold shall be seen in stream and stone, In land that is yet unknown.
  4. And England shall admit a Jew, Do you think this strange? But it is true! The Jew that once was led in scorn, Shall of a Christian then be born. [Britain creating the Israeli state?]
  5. For in those wondrous far off days, The women shall adopt a craze To dress like men, and trousers wear And to cut off all their locks of hair. They’ll ride astride with brazen brow, As witches do on broomsticks now.
  6. Tarabich Prophesy

https://preview.redd.it/4y80ze73xtwc1.png?width=298&format=png&auto=webp&s=9fb3542f536ecd2aa599c1e17b0fae4d5beae155
Mitar Tarabich is a little known prophet from Serbia. He lived from 1829 – 1899, and is believed to have predicted many events relating to Serbia in the 1930s, 1940s and World War II:
“After [Tito] our land will be governed by some kind of commission, but it will never be as it was. Even though the people in our kingdom will forget about misery and hunger and will live in great wealth, brother will start to hate and think evil of brother…. The Serbs will separate from each other, and they will say: “I am not a Serb, I am not a Serb.” The unholy one will infiltrate this nation and bed with Serbian sisters, mothers and wives. He will sire such children that among the Serbs, since the beginning of the world, these will be the worst of offspring. Only weaklings will be born, and nobody will be strong enough to give a birth to a real hero.”
He also made other predictions about the future, relating mostly to technology: “Men will build a box and within will be some kind of gadget with images… “, “Man will travel to other worlds to find lifeless deserts there…”, “Those who will read and write different books with numbers will think that they know the most…”.
  1. Robert Nixon Prophesies

https://preview.redd.it/qid755m8xtwc1.png?width=306&format=png&auto=webp&s=69f096cb9f9b564be38f6a8a0001c131debfacac
Robert Nixon was a young man who worked as a plowboy in the county of Cheshire, England, in the late 15th century. Because he rarely spoke, and usually babbled incomprehensibly when he did, Nixon was thought to be mentally retarded. Despite this, he came out with a number of surprising (and apparently accurate) predictions of the future. Here are a few of them:
“The weary eagle shall to an island in the sun retire, where leaves and herbs grow fresh and green. There shall he meet a lady fair” – this is believed to be a prophesy of Napoleon who was sent to St Helena in 1815 – an island with an abundance of rare plants and named for Helen of Troy who was a “lady fair”.
Another curious prophesy is believed by some to predict the worldwide use of cigarettes: “All sorts will have chimneys in their mouths”.
In addition to the above, Nixon is believed to have predicted voyages to the moon, travel by rockets, RVs, voice recording devices and lightbulbs. When he was summoned to the court of Richard III he refused to make any prophesies except that he would be starved to death. The King ordered him to be kept in the kitchen, but a cook (unwittingly) locked him in a cupboard where he starved to death.
  1. Prophecy of the Popes

https://preview.redd.it/hz7ghy4extwc1.png?width=548&format=png&auto=webp&s=d57afcec3be44347a21ec2a361156095e1c3f96f
The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, is a list of 112 short phrases in Latin. They purport to describe each of the Catholic popes (along with a few anti-popes), beginning with Pope Celestine II (elected in 1143) and concluding with a pope described in the prophecy as “Peter the Roman”, whose pontificate will end in the destruction of the city of Rome. What is most interesting about this prophecy is that the current pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI (listed as the “Glory of the Olive” – Benedict is the founder of the Benedictine monks whose symbol is the olive branch) is the last Pope before Peter the Roman. Tying this in with other aspects of Catholic eschatology (the study of the end times) which generally describes a great apostasy in the Church prior to the second coming of Christ, many Catholics believe that we are now in the end times and that the next pope will be the last before the final judgment. Here is the text of the prophecy as it relates to the final Pope:
“In the last persecution of the Holy Roman Church, Peter the Roman will hold the see (lit. “sit”), who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations: and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills [Rome] will be destroyed, and the terrible judge will judge his people."
  1. White Horse Prophesy
https://preview.redd.it/jhk1itrrxtwc1.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=da002c0381b37929c8addb0a6e9c25e9e4854c29
Mormon readers amongst us may be familiar with this prophesy, but most of us aren’t. The White Horse Prophecy is a statement purported to have been made in 1843, by Joseph Smith (founder of the Mormon religion). According to the prophecy, the Mormons would “go to the Rocky Mountains and … be a great and mighty people”, identified figuratively with the White Horse described in the Apocalypse of St John. The prophecy further predicts that the United States Constitution will one day “hang like a thread” and will be saved “by the efforts of the White Horse”. “A terrible revolution will take place in the land of America, such as has never been seen before; for the land will be left without a Supreme Government, and every specie of wickedness will be practiced rampantly in the land. Father will be against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother. The most terrible scenes of bloodshed, murder and rape that have ever been imagined or looked upon will take place.” Smith believed that the US Constitution was written by the inspiration of God and that the Mormon religion would save it , and America during this time he prophesied.
  1. Prophecy of St Nilus

https://preview.redd.it/cs2j20gvxtwc1.png?width=275&format=png&auto=webp&s=f05063ac5d145da943c32f22fbaf3a158c94ef19
St Nilus was a 5th century ascetic monk who was a disciple of St John Chrysostom (a doctor of the Church). He made a prophecy (though some dispute it dates from his time) relating to the 20th century which is striking in its foresight. Here are a few particularly pertinent sections of the prophesy, the last phrase is particularly interesting:
After the year 1900, toward the middle of the 20th century, the people of that time will become unrecognizable. When the time for the Advent of the Antichrist approaches, people’s minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonour and lawlessness will grow stronger. Then the world will become unrecognizable. […] People’s appearances will change, and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to their shamelessness in dress and style of hair. […] At that time the morals and traditions of Christians and of the Church will change. People will abandon modesty, and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and greed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasures. Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds and murder will rule in society. […] At that time men will also fly through the air like birds and descend to the bottom of the sea like fish. And when they have achieved all this, these unhappy people will spend their lives in comfort without knowing, poor souls, that it is deceit of the Antichrist…

2024.04.18 09:30 HannoPicardVI Popular British YouTuber Adam Hansen arrested by police in London under rarely used "Misinformation Act" after telling men attempting to avoid conscription in the war against The Global Caliphate in Italy to "rut, rut, rut". In a video, he says British men should "try to become fathers very quickly

A popular British YouTuber whose channel has over 257,000 subscribers and who has 177,603 and 212,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok respectively, has been arrested after his latest video amassed a million views and "caused a panic".
The most recent video on his channel HansenSays is titled "How to avoid the UK government sending you to your death" and is a commentary on a new Bill which is flying through Parliament at a blistering pace.
Hansen reportedly tells British men to "rut, rut, rut" and "become fathers very quickly" in order to avoid conscription.
The Bill - "The Modern Conscription Bill" - will soon allow the Government to be able to force men aged between 18 and 55 to join the Army and fight against The Global Caliphate in Italy. When it becomes law - which looks extremely likely - the provisions on conscription will come into force 9 months from the date of receiving Royal Assent.
In his video, Hansen says "this gives you Brits just enough time to make a baby or two and be declared ineligible".
"Failing that," he says, "break your arm closer to the conscription date and give yourself some time to plan your escape. Me? I'm already packing my bags for the next flight to Australia!"
Hansen was arrested and charged under Section 9 of The Misinformation Act (England and Wales), which cites "inciting panic and mayhem via video and audio during communications with a group of 500 or more people" and "creating or filming material which may cause discord, disharmony and panic in society".
According to a SalisburyNational10 Poll, 1 in 4 British men are "worried" about conscription and 1 in 9 say they will "actively try to avoid it". 1 in 12 men think conscription in 2033 is "wrong, archaic and dangerous", whilst 1 in 15 think conscription is "tantamount to slavery".
According to the Bill, "actively and deliberately avoiding conscription" will become a criminal offence, punishable by a fine of not more than £2,500 as well as an 8-month prison sentence.
Exceptions exist: for example, a full-time police officer or "essential police staff" (e.g. a full-time dispatcher) in any force in England and Wales can use the "essential worker exemption" to legally avoid conscription, whereas a volunteer PCSO in London cannot; certain civil servants can also avoid conscription; other essential workers include full-time doctors and nurses and even full-time bus drivers; workers such as crime scene cleaners and bricklayers are not considered "essential workers", but a medical researcher whose participation in "medical research which is for the public good" would be considered an "essential worker". Rather bizarrely, a refuse worker (a binman) employed by a local authority is considered under the Bill to be "an essential worker", but a street sweeper employed by the same local authority is not. Government ministers and elected public officials are considered "essential workers", yet their aides and assistants are not. Members of the immediate UK Royal Family are automatically exempt from conscription, but their extended family members are not. Some skilled and tech workers in the private sector may even be able to declare an exemption in extremely limited circumstances; for instance, a software or network engineer or executive staff member in Meta (Facebook) can be exempt if their employer (e.g. Meta) considers their employment to be "integral to the proper functioning and day-to-day operations of the company and their absence will adversely affect their department and/or the company to a great degree". The Bill still has yet to become law as it continues to be assessed in the House of Lords.

"Green Day Melts Milton Keynes"
by R. Dale Roth 2024-04-17
Imagine Woodstock dipped in gasoline and set ablaze – that's the raw energy that crackled through the massive crowd at Green Day's legendary "Bullet in a Bible" shows at Milton Keynes National Bowl in June 2005.
The English summer, usually a mild affair, decided to crank the heat up to eleven, mirroring the band's fury on those sweltering nights. This wasn't just a concert; it was a baptism by fire, a punk rock communion that left an indelible mark on everyone who witnessed it.
A giant middle finger to apathy, The "Bullet in a Bible" tour was a rock and roll riot aimed straight at the heart of American dissatisfaction. Green Day, fresh off the success of their concept album "American Idiot," used the stage as a soapbox, each song a punch in the gut against suburban boredom, political indifference, and the emptiness of the American Dream.
Billie Joe wasn't just a frontman; he was a conductor, a punk rock Pied Piper whipping the crowd into a frenzy. During a mid-set number, he plucked a lucky audience member from the throng, pulling them onstage for a euphoric moment of shared glory. It was a fleeting yet powerful display of connection, a testament to the band's ability to forge a community within the chaos.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the mosh pit, Green Day delivered a knockout punch with their closing numbers. The first, a melancholic anthem, resonated deeply with the crowd, a reflection of the bittersweet realities of life. The second, a bittersweet farewell tinged with optimism, sent the audience off on a hopeful note.
The "Bullet in a Bible" shows weren't just concerts; they were experiences. The scorching heat only intensified the passion. The "Bullet in a Bible" performances capture a glimpse of that energy, but it's a mere echo of the raw, unbridled power that night. Green Day, at the peak of their youthful rage, proved that rock and roll could still be a revolution, a middle finger raised high against the status quo.
Much like The Who's legendary performance or Bruce Springsteen's electrifying tour, this was a night etched in rock and roll history. It was a night when music, anger, and community collided in a glorious, unforgettable blaze.
Song by Song:
  1. American Idiot: The show exploded with the title track, a sonic bomb igniting the crowd. It was a blistering declaration of rebellion against the status quo, perfectly capturing the frustration and anger simmering in the sweltering heat.
  2. Jesus of Suburbia: This sprawling epic became a communal howl. Armstrong's raw vocals resonated with the audience, their voices echoing his yearning for escape from the stifling boredom of suburbia.
  3. Holiday: This classic became a sing-along laced with a new urgency. It wasn't just a wish for a vacation anymore; it was a desperate plea for a break from the disillusionment of everyday life.
  4. Are We the Waiting?: A heavy question mark hung in the air as this song played. The crowd, united in their confusion, chanted along, searching for answers and a sense of purpose.
  5. St. Jimmy: This became a punk rock therapy session. Armstrong's electrifying performance served as a catalyst for the crowd to unleash their inner demons and frustrations in a cathartic mosh pit frenzy.
  6. Longview: This early Green Day track wasn't just a nostalgic sing-along. It was a reminder that even with the political fire of their newer material, the band hadn't forgotten their punk rock roots. This blast from the past felt charged with a new meaning, a call to action for a generation craving change. The raw energy of the song resonated with the crowd, reminding them of the band's rebellious spirit.
  7. Hitchin' a Ride: Similar to "Longview," this early Green Day anthem wasn't just a chance for a crowd sing-along. It was a reminder of the band's punk rock foundation. While the political commentary of the newer songs took center stage, "Hitchin' a Ride" injected a dose of pure, unadulterated punk energy into the set. This blast from the past felt infused with a new purpose, a call to arms for a generation yearning for a different path.
  8. Brain Stew: This Green Day fan favorite wasn't absent from the setlist, but it took on a new edge at Milton Keynes. The song's exploration of anxiety and paranoia resonated more deeply with the audience facing an uncertain future. The frenetic energy of the performance mirrored the anxieties of the time, creating a powerful connection between band and crowd.
  9. Basket Case: Another Green Day staple, "Basket Case" wasn't just a sing-along at Milton Keynes. The song's exploration of mental health struggles resonated more deeply with the audience facing an uncertain future. The raw emotion in Armstrong's vocals and the frenetic energy of the music perfectly captured the anxieties of the time, creating a cathartic experience for the crowd.
  10. King For A Day / Shout: Here, Billie Joe wasn't just a frontman; he was a conductor, pulling a lucky audience member onstage to share the spotlight. This moment of connection epitomized the band's ability to create a community within the chaos. The celebratory "Shout" that followed became a collective roar of defiance.
  11. Wake Me Up When September Ends: This poignant song took on a new weight post-9/11. It became a collective sigh for lost innocence, a bittersweet reflection on a time before tragedy struck.
  12. Minority: This became a battle cry. The crowd chanted along, a united front against whatever was holding them back, whether it was societal pressures, political apathy, or personal struggles.
  13. Boulevard of Broken Dreams: As the sun set, casting an melancholic light on the crowd, Green Day delivered this anthem of lost hope. The song resonated deeply, a reflection of the disillusionment many felt.
  14. Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life): The show ended on a bittersweet high note. This farewell song, tinged with optimism, sent the audience off with a sense of hope for the future, despite the challenges they faced.

2024.04.17 16:49 House_of_Lij Lij's Drag Race Recasted: UK S4 EP5 "Lairy Poppins - The Rusical" Lip-Sync

The "Lairy Poppins" Rusicsal Challenge results are in!

Kate Butch has won the "Reading Is Fundamental" Mini Challenge!

After the challenge, Kate Butch & La Diamond are declared safe. They both step to the back of the stage, leaving the tops and bottoms for their critiques.

════ ⋆★⋆ ════

ON THE MAINSTAGE...
Bimini Bon-Boulash receives positive critiques from the judges. Her role as the chimney sweeper was hilarious because she had an incredible transformation into a male drag persona. She had a lot of fun with her role, having each moment to make everyone laugh and even making people like Margaret break on stage. This week's runway was also fantastic, embracing the "Dr. Frank N' Furter" runway she had, completely changing into this femme sex appeal on the runway.

Moon receives positive critiques from the judges. Her performance in the rusical this week was simply another one. She's been close to breaking into the top every week, and she shot up as Rochelle this week. She had a hilarious performance and was utterly different from what they expected. She enjoyed being dirty, filthy, and entirely French, taking the attention from the moment she walked out. Her Moulin Rouge runway was, by far, one of the best, with an excellent burlesque performance.

Margaret Y Ya receives negative critiques from the judges. The problem with Margaret is that she needs to stay in character. She forgot the lyrics to her songs and some of the choreography, which, in turn, impacted Girlfriend because she remembered all of the content. They could tell that Margaret got in her head after forgetting a bit as the performance continued. Her runway for Seussical could have been better, too, with this pink fluffy feather runway being cute but similar to past looks.

The Girlfriend Experience receives negative critiques from the judges. Girlfriend did fine this week, which is somewhat of a death wish when everyone gave their all into the maxi challenge. She had a cute character interpretation and had fun with her role, but it was clear that she was somewhat phoning her performance in rather than having fun with the role she had. Her runway for Chicago is gorgeous, though, loving her masc to-femme reveal on the runway.

Tyra Sanchez receives positive critiques from the judges. Tyra was the biggest surprise this week for the panel because not only was she the lead, but it was a role they could never see her in until she came on the stage. She had everyone laughing with her willingness to break from being pretty and have fun in being disgusting and zany, taking every moment to have as much fun as possible. Her runway was also a complete juxtaposition, as she became this glamorous Dolly-Parton-esque woman.

Vanity Vain receives negative critiques from the judges. Vanity was funny during her performance, with the judges laughing when she came out. It wasn't that she even did it horribly, but they think she got in her head. She did so well during her section, and when the final number came, they could see that she was having trouble remembering the choreography and lines, causing a messy ending. Her runway for Phantom saves her because this scarred prosthetic looks fantastic.

AFTER DELIBERATION...
WIN: Moon
HIGH: Bimini Bon-Boulash
SAFE: Kate Butch / La Diamond
LOW: Vanity Vain
BOTTOM 2: Margaret Y Ya / The Girlfriend Experience
The Bottom Two Queens will Lip-Sync for Their Lives to "No Way" by Six The Musical. This is their Last Chance to Impress RuPaul and save themselves from Elimination. Good Luck, and Don't Fuck It Up!

2024.04.16 19:29 Iamverycrappy The Best Singles Moves According to This Community

So a while back I posted a poll asking everyone what they thought the best singles moves are, and it got a lot more attention than I though so I was like, might as well use this information to create a list of the community voted best singles moves with some commentary.

1 Vote

Freeze Burn- This vote is so funny to me bc 1: This is one of the worst moves in the game, and a legendary signature move no less 2: Its counterpart actually was useful in gen 7 bc kyurem black got no phys ice moves and it could use it for a z move 3: the other moves in the comment were like real good moves so it wasnt like a complete joke comment and 4: it doesn't even exist, with Ice Burn (unrelated but thats a horrible move name it sounds like it came from theorymon thursday) being what i assumed they meant. So yeah bad move but still more votes than will o wisp lmao.
Make it Rain- I know its a good move but like, if iI had to choose a gen 9 ou staple commonly used move I woulda gone with like sucker punch or spin.
Stone Axe- Poor kleavor, but also relying on that 90% set up rocks is a little unideal.
Geomancy- Ok maybe this one is warranted.
Boomburst- Obviously a very strong move but like, usually on shitmons (give noivern aerielate cowards I wanna see my boy succeed🙏).
Thunderbolt- Kind of a stand in for all but 2 of the basic 80-90 bp stab moves. Its kinda hard to vote for them because they arent super flashy but types like rock and flying show how important they are to have.
Earth Power- What I said for tbolt but this time its ground type which is just somewhat good offensively.
Strength Sap- Genuinely a crazy move that has no business being so good. Its a good thing almost nothing gets it because its mad oppressive to any physical attacker who already deal with so much.
Victory Dance- Is it a very good move, yeah, does swords dance deserve to be here instead of it bc more than one mon that doesnt even always run it gets swords dance, yeah.
Ceaseless Edge- Its definitely a good move, but i wonder how much sharpness is doing the heavy lifting bc its literally stronger than basically dark stab with it, although I'm not a fan of the imperfect accuracy.
Tidy Up- Ok one guy just said a bunch of op signature moves its hard to comment other then "ok but like nobody gets it".
Draco Meteor- Poor draco meteor, I definitely think it shouldve gotten more recognition with the sheer terror it exudes, especially in its prime during gen 5.
Rest- Insert gen 2 speech bubble.
Protect- Its only really good at enabling other things like toxic and wish but its pretty damn good at it.

2 Votes

Splash- Now everyone laugh.
Thousand Arrows- I know its a good move and all but of all the legendary signature moves this is the one to get the most votes? the calyrex moves and double iron bash got 0 votes and they are way crazier imo.
Last Respects- Completely busted yes, but people don't really consider banned moves all that often.
Sucker Punch- I wonder who caused this move to gain more notoriety (imagine if sucker punch never got nerfed i wonder if gambit would have gotten banned💀).
Dragon Dance- What can i say other than it's probably the best semi widely distributed boosting move, give it to garchomp already he's depressed in uubl hell rn.
Ice Beam- The tool that makes water types so good offensively, freeze is obviously stupid, and ice is just a very good offensive type, definitely a top tier basic move.

3 Votes

Sticky Web- This is such a good move that makes some games feel suffocating especially with that looming presence gholdengo. Even with the bad distribution its worth using just because of how valuable speed control is.
Chilly Reception, Teleport, Flip Turn- These 3 were never actually specifically named but 3 people mentioned "pivot moves" so thats why they are here, and pivoting needs no introduction its pretty good in a switch heavy meta.
Thunder Wave- I hate this move and its crazy distribution, definitely hoping they cut down on who gets access bc paralysis is so unfun to deal with.
Extreme Speed- Its funny how completely ridiculous this move is, although even with its blatant strength there are only a few notable users, but yeah obviously quick attack x 2 is great especially on arceus and tera normal mons.

4 Votes

Spore- Another move that's technically been banned, in two gens this time i believe. I used to think this was the best move in the game but now that im not running grappoloct and mantine in ladders where ash greninja is allowed I can see that it has a good deal of counterplay and is extremely predictable, doesn't make it not crazy tho.
Parting Shot- Definitely got overinflated by the triple pivot move vote but its pretty good as like a memento but not as committal, letting you switch in a crazy boost sweeper like roaring moon while weakening your opponent.
Volt switch- Now this actually deserves to be this high up, if it wasnt for the ground immunity and low distribution this would be even better than u turn with that lovely no contact, maybe in gen 10 we'll get an electric type that can hit ground bc abilities no longer have to be balanced.
Rapid Spin- One of my favorite moves, the gen 8 buff actually made this move so fun to use even ignoring the main draw of hazard removal. Anyway yeah this is one good ass move, imo better than defog because the only disadvantage is that you have to connect the attack which yeah is pretty bad when the entire ghost type exists, and that most mons that get it arent the best but mons like great tusk and starmie still exist and its also been a hazard removal move for longer.
Defog- I wonder what yall think about which is better considering they both tied here. I mean defog has many disadvantages, like taunt, no damage, removes your own hazards, is mostly on mons weak to rocks (aliviated by hdb but still inherently bad due to the prevalence of knock off and pre gen 8 still being taken into account), can proc defiant and competative, and this gen its biggest advantage over rapid spin is being put into question bc of gholden, but obviously its still a good move and for gens 6-8 a near guaranteed hazard removal.
Baton Pass- Technically the best move in singles but uhh i think theres a reason its not higher i just cant put my finger on it.
Quiver Dance- Aka volcaronas signature move. I'm not really a fan of how high it is bc of its low distribution but oh well its still a really good move that has made some shitmons somewhat usable in lower tiers like venomoth and also pushed volc over the edge a few times.

5 Votes

Close Combat- Now every tier has one move each, anyway its pretty clear why cc is so good, its high bp and downside are pretty synergetic in how the best defense is a good offense, and a good deal of mons get it, and not just fighting types.

7 Votes

Hidden Power- Insert ferrothorn, lando-t and swampert speech bubble, but yeah this move is obviously very good considering how it gives special attackers a way to get whatever coverage they want. And with how many amazing mons have 4x weaknesses coverage like that goes crazy, or if youre gen 3 salamance it gives you actual stab.

8 Votes

Recovery Moves- Ngl i feel this placement is far too low. Yall do realize these moves are the backbone of so many pokemon and an entire team structure right? This entire discussion was made because of a post on how broken ting-lu would be if it got recover, making me realize damn one move can be so good it could really push a mon so far over the edge. Maybe its just my bias against big stall but i really think these are top 5 moves that can breath viability into mons, and yeah maybe its this low bc it only works on certain defensive mons, but these moves have been so prevalent in every gen aside from 2 i believe, that i definitely think it should have gotten much more votes, considering some of the moves in the 1 vote tier especially.

11 Votes

Pursuit- Poor psychics man they cant catch a break in any gen past 1. Trapping is one of the most broken effects in singles and while this technically doesnt trap the opponent it still basically accomplishes that effect, especially on a dark weak mon, which have quite a few strong representatives like latios and gengar being some of the most notable.

12 Votes

Spikes- Ngl a pretty overshadowed move. Its crazy to think this move does the same as stealth rocks by default and you can stack it for double that, but obviously rocks have the crucial advantage of being less committal, having the questionably balanced weakness mechanic, and having no type immunities. They still had time to shine pre gen 4, and in gen 9 mr spinblocker really enables spike stacking because all that work cant be swept away as easily now (maybe only pre-home tho bc if you want spikes now you usually go with c-edge).

18 Votes

Earthquake- Ol' reliable, the golden standard for basic offensive moves, amazing for stab and amazing for coverage. So good that even when a whole type, ability (technically 2 but earth eater isnt real), item, and terrain are made to counter it, it still keeps being as good as ever.

Number 5: 19 Votes

Scald- The worst thing to come out of gen 5, its easy to see why this move is so broken. It is extremely synergetic with itself, as the usual counter to burns gets hit with a se 80 bp move, and the rest having to deal with an annoyingly high chance of getting hit with a strong status, especially against physical attackers. It was so good it probably was the cause of burn's dmg being cut in half (the fact that it was the same as poison in the first place is crazy to me). And thankfully its distribution was cut in 9, although i wish it was just removed entirely.

Number 4: 20 Votes

Toxic- Most of this top 5 is incredibly unsurprising and obvious but this one wasn't as expected, but yeah putting a mon on such a crazy ramping timer is extremely good against anything put a few mons that dont care for being toxic'd. Im still not sure if it deserves top 4 over other moves but maybe its my new gen bias since its lost a bit of prominence.

Number 3: 30 Votes

U-Turn- After 3 moves that were 1 vote appart we get a 10 vote difference and it is to absolutely nobody's surprise, but it was really fun seeing this and number 2 battle it out for votes as i was tallying. Anyway everyone already knows why this move is good, momentum is key in any turn based game where clever positioning can get you an insane advantage and u-turn does just that while providing pretty good chip damage against most mons and straight up bullying for bug weaks. As fun as this move is it probably should get a distribution cut and maybe a new normal pivot move can be introduced to take its place to save poor mons like wo chien.

Number 2: 31 Votes

Knock off- Listen, i get that knock off was buffed because of mega stones and then z moves, but this move is simply absurd. An extremely impactful effect in combination with being literally the best distributed offensive dark move when the opponent has an item is insane, and even against an itemless opponent its only 5 bp less than the awful night slash that mons like weavile or meow would have to use otherwise. They ended up being very close but i think knock off above u turn is justified, and fun fact, 3 of the 5 top offensive moves in this list hit psychic for se. The (debatable) top dog of gen 1 really has been getting bullied constantly since its gen 2.

Number 1: 36 Votes

Stealth Rocks- Wow how unexpected, this blew my head open and made my eyes shoot out of their sockets. Ok but for real this is one of the most obvious number 1 picks of all time, and yeah i dont gotta explain why chip damage upon switching that can sometimes drain half of a mons hp is really fucking good, but at the same time idk why but it feels kinda underwhelming to be number one, like it isnt a very explosive bombastic move its just some chip damage, but with how much switching is done in singles it adds up so much. Imo the damage rocks do really should be cut by half across the board, boots was just kind of a shitty bandaid solution to hazards being really fucking good and it really sucks how awful types like ice and bug suffer while amazing types like ground and steel benefit, but this isnt a "rocks healthy?" discussion so congrats to rocks for being the extremely unsurprising winner.

2024.04.16 02:03 ACwinklier Neville Decoded: All Things Exist

The following is an analysis of Neville’s lecture All Things Exist. Neville’s words will appear in bolded italics, my commentary in regular text. Long one, so buckle up and enjoy!
“All that you behold, though it appears without, it is within, in your imagination of which this world of mortality is but a shadow.”
(William Blake)
The world of imagination is infinite and eternal, whereas the world of generation is finite and temporary. In that eternal world, the permanent realities of everything exist. Their reflections are here, cast in a glass called nature.
In can be useful to think of reality as existing on a spectrum of potentiality and actuality. When something exists in a clear and definite form, its potential to exist in any of an infinite number of other forms goes to zero. When something exists completely in potential, it has no actuality, and thus, is formless.
I like the metaphor of painting a picture. If I sit down at a canvas with no ideas in my head, the potential of what could be painted is at a maximum; I could paint a realist portrait of my Uncle, I could paint a landscape of the French countryside, I could paint something totally abstract like a Jackson Pollock, etc.
When I decide I’m going to paint a bowl of fruit, I begin sliding down the spectrum toward actualization. At this point, the possibilities of me painting a portrait of my uncle or a landscape of the countryside have disappeared. Even though the painting is still in “idea form,” it does have some actuality to it. But it has a good deal of potential as well – what style will I paint my fruit bowl in? Will it be realist, will it be abstract? What fruits will I choose to paint? Apples and pears? Bananas and oranges?
As I move further along with these decisions and actually begin painting, I continue to head towards actuality. And, when the painting is finished, all “potential paintings” have been traded in for the one “actual painting.”
So, all Neville is saying here is that imagination contains the unformed potential of all things existing simultaneously, and that the 3D or the physical is a distillation of one single potential creation into its actual form. He also notes that anything “formed” (anything existing in time and space) is temporary, but things existing in potential, as a consequence of not being bound by time or space, exist eternally.
“The oak is cut down by the ax And the lamb falls by the knife, But their eternal forms exist forever, And are renewed by the seed of contemplative thought.” (William Blake)
The permanent realities of an extinct bird, animal, or fish, live! They can be resurrected and externalized by the seed of your contemplative thought, for everything lives within you! This world of generation I call the world of Caesar should not be neglected, as it is an important aspect of reality, even though it is only a shadow. Scripture urges us to revise, to forgive, and change our thoughts, thereby changing the conditions of our life. This is how it is done.
Here we double down on that potentiality-actuality idea using the idea of extinct animals. Though these animals no longer have form, they do still exist in potential – the ideas of them exist, and can be accessed easily by us through thought. In this way, nothing ever truly dies or goes away – things just move into and out of actuality.
Neville uses the term “The world of Caesar” to describe the 3D and notes that this “generative” (or, in our terms, actualized) world depends on its existing first in potential for its eventual existence in actuality. This is why he calls it a shadow – because actual existence can’t occur without potential existence, but potential existence can persist even in the absence of actualization.
A friend recently wrote saying: “Three weeks ago a friend called, saying he was afraid he was going to be fired. I instantly revised his call. Hearing his voice bubbling with excitement, he told me how he had been praised for his work and I felt the thrill of rejoicing with him. Today he came to my office and said the very words I heard in my imagination.
“This morning, while dressing I was thinking about an ad I was working on which carried the name of a very prominent man in San Francisco. As I ran the ad through my mind I said to myself, I want to put the word ‘Mister’ before his name. I did it and it felt right. I made a mental note to do it when I arrived at the office, and promptly dropped the thought. That afternoon the man called, asking that I insert ‘Mister’ before his name - not in the ad, but in a radio commercial where his name was used.”
These two examples are of people creating the actual by first abiding in the potential. In example one, the person revised – meaning, they went back and accessed a potential reality different from the reality that was experienced in actuality. This is an interesting example, because you could debate whether or not the actual reality of what happened was being denied, or if the potential reality being “accessed” was one in which the friend did in fact worry about being fired, but ended up being praised. It’s a subtle difference – “revision” suggests a denial of what actually occurred, though, and that’s hard for people to wrap their heads around. Because of this, I tend towards the later explanation – that revision can simply be viewed as a technique for accessing a more preferable procession of future actualization, and that you don’t actually have to deny what occurred. But it’s up to interpretation.
In the second example, the person just noted something mentally and then that thing occurred (or something close to it, at least). Again, a very interesting case. Did Neville’s friend think about changing the billboard because he was already in the “potential pipeline” of that call happening in actuality, or did the call happen because he entered that potentiality with his thoughts? Ultimately, I don’t think it matters – in either case, what occurred is evidence that things exist in potential first and actuality second, and we know that we can intentionally enter a different “potential pipeline” if we want to, whether or not this person did or not.
Then my friend added this thought: “I stand in awe at the operation of this law. You asked about the little pig I saw. He was small, but fat, and the way I am stuffing him today, in no time at all he will be so large he will fill this room. For those who are not familiar with this symbol, the pig is the symbol of Christ, the power and wisdom of God. Every time you exercise your imagination lovingly on behalf of another or yourself, you are feeding Jesus Christ. My friend is stuffing his pig, because every moment of time he is alert and putting this law into practice.
The fat pig metaphor is a funny one (especially with Biblical significance attached to it), but I think the point is clear enough. If you want to fatten your pig, you have to feed it. Every trough of food you offer it is “potential fatness” – feed it this potential often and consistently enough and eventually you’ll get a pig that is fat in actuality. If you want X to occur, you have to “feed” that aspiration by persisting in the feeling of X occurring. If you want X but you spend all your time thinking about Y, you’re going to get Y – just like how, if you want a fat pig but you give all your food to your chickens, you’re going to end up with fat chickens and a skinny pig, which isn’t what you want.
Now a lady wrote, saying: “I found myself looking at an enormous building at the edge of a vast body of water where your classes were held. A man at my side asked: ‘How do the students get to the classes?’ Pointing to another student who was walking on the water towards her destination I answered: ‘That’s how it is done.’” “Unwilling to accept my answer the man said: ‘But how do you do it?’ and I confessed: ‘I have placed stones just below the water.’ Then the scene changed and I am with a friend who said: ‘I am pregnant.’ Shocked, because I knew she had no husband I asked: ‘By whom?’ and before she could answer, I awoke.
“Three nights later I found myself in a very large building containing a theater, where you were the one actor who was playing every part. As you assumed the role of the blind man, I realized there was no one to lead you, so I ran to help. As we walked, we came upon a young boy sound asleep. Then you said: ‘I told him to meditate and he has fallen asleep again.’
“The scene changed, and I am viewing paper decorations hanging above a door. I reached up to pull them down, when an enormous wind caught me and I felt as though I was borne in the arms of a very strong man and awoke saying, ‘I love thee, O Lord.’”
This marvelous series of dreams revealed much. This lady admitted crossing the water while walking on a solid foundation. Now the Bible is a parable from beginning to end, and water is the symbol of its psychological truth. The literal interpretation of a parable is solid as a rock. When the meaning behind the parable is discovered, the stone is rolled away and the water found. However if a little solid reality in this world is desired while playing with this psychological truth, it becomes stepping-stones below the water. Loving what is heard is not enough. One must be willing to go all out and walk on the water. Instead, feeling she must be practical as she was living in a world of reality where rent must be paid, food bought, and clothes purchased, she is unable to walk by faith at the present time.
We can continue using our potential vs. actual idea to analyze this first part of the dream (and Neville’s explanation of it). We discussed before how potential reality precedes actual reality – the idea for my painting of a bowl of fruit has to exist before the painting itself can; we also discussed how the reverse isn’t true – I don’t need to actually paint the bowl of fruit for the idea of the painting to exist.
What Neville is saying here is that most people have this equation backward. They believe the potential to cross the water is dependent on the actual existence of a path for doing so. The woman in question couldn’t walk on the water without first placing stones to step on. Our goal, though, is to walk on water through faith alone – to know that the potential creates the actual, and thus, that our persisting in the knowledge that we can cross the water is what creates the means for us to do so; laying out stones in advance is unnecessary.
Let me give you a definition that came to me concerning the word faith. Faith is the subjective appropriation of an objective hope. When my friend revised the first telephone conversation, he subjectively appropriated what he hoped would objectify for his friend. He remained faithful to his imaginal act, and confirmation came.
In other words, Faith is the claiming in potential of what we hope to occur in actuality.
Do as my friend does, and you will experience the glorious sensation of walking on the water in your mystical world. In my own case I was pulled by a wonderful goose, the symbol of the Holy Spirit. Having lassoed him with a silver chain - the symbol of knowledge - he propelled me over this fabulous water. This is He who will lead you into all things, as recorded in the 14th chapter of the Book of John.
When the metaphors get difficult to comprehend, run them through the filter of what you already understand. The knowledge of the holy spirit guiding one over the water is just another way of expressing that when you know all things exist in imagination (when you know the potential to cross the water exists), you don’t need a path to walk on. This knowledge will propel you across by any means necessary, whether that be by the creation of the stones as you walk, by the momentary solidification of the water as you cross it, by a gust of wind that blows you over to your destination, or by any of the other infinite potential paths to your destination.
The lady saw the protean man when she saw me playing all the parts. As the dreamer of the dream, she has been impregnated by the one she spoke to when she awoke, saying: “I love thee, O Lord.” Mary did not know the name of the one who impregnated her, yet it was the same Lord, the same I AM.
The woman saw that underlying any specific part played by the actor is the actor himself – the man as he exists in potential. And, when Neville says this woman was impregnated by the Lord, he’s saying that out of the vast, unknowable ocean of potential arose this actual insight that came from the dream.
In this lady’s dream she was so brutally honest with herself when the man insisted that she tell him how she crossed the water. She could have said she walked on the water. Instead she told him exactly how it was done, thereby admitting to herself that she has not gone all out and lived by the law, but has a little anchor on the side, in the event it doesn’t work.
In Barbados we have a saying: “I have a hind-claw,” meaning there is some money tucked away in the bank, a little income from the family, or something I can fall back on just in case. We have these beach crabs on the island that are almost impossible to catch. Running at top speed, the crab can run right over a precipice and disappear. If you followed him you would break your neck in the fall, but the crab has a hind-claw that stops his fall. He grabs the earth just below the surface, and there the crab can pause and get his breath before climbing back and entering the race again. I urge you not to have a hind-claw. Be for me or against me, but be one way or the other.
The compulsion to have a “hind-claw” or back-up plan is based on the belief that some actual path must precede the potential occurrence. It’s a person saying, “This water is impossible to cross unless there is a path of stones laid out beneath the surface.” When we say this, though, we’re unwittingly cutting ourselves off from the full range of potential solutions to our problems. If you need a path of stones to cross the water, then you cut off the possibility that you’ll be guided across by a goose or blown across by a gust of wind.
It’s ultimately a question of contentedness with your knowledge of the potential. Either you know you will cross the water, or you know you will not – there is no room for “if” (I will cross the water if there is a path of stones laid out for me).
Now, I want to share an experience of a lady who wrote, saying: “About a year ago I was deeply concerned for my mother. While lying on my bed, I began to imagine her face radiantly happy, and hear her tell me she had never known such happiness before. As I listened, I heard my name whispered softly three times.
“Startled, I raised myself off the pillow to see you standing in mid-air. Dressed in a gray suit, you smiled, raised your arms, and removed the eyes from your head. Then you came over and calling me brother, you pressed them into my eyes. Bending your head, I watched it grow transparent and enormous in size. Then I saw that every living thing in the universe was there. You straightened up, and as you did your head returned to its normal size. Again, raising your right hand, you took off the top of your head and handed it to me, where I saw the greenest of green grass growing there, and you vanished.”
Yes, I called this lady brother advisedly, for regardless of the sex worn here, we are immortal brothers, all of us. So I say: “Go unto my brothers and say to them, ‘I have ascended unto my God and your God, unto my Father and your Father.
It was over a year ago when I placed my eyes into her sockets and gave her sight. Now she has become the incurrent eyewitness. In her vision she saw a long table. A man dressed in the white robe of a judge, carrying a gavel in his hand, entered the room. Looking directly at her, the gavel hit the table and he said: “I pronounce you the incurrent eyewitness.”
The word incurrent means, giving passage to a current that flows inward. This lady is now so conditioned that I can reveal all things to her so that she can know the truth of the statement: “All that you behold, though it appears without it is within, in your Imagination, of which this world of mortality is but a shadow.” She saw that every living thing was contained in my immortal head. Destroy the garment I now wear or anything in my world and I will reproduce it again, for my immortal head cannot be destroyed.
Neville’s friends have a lot of wacky dreams. What this woman saw was exactly what Neville details when he says, “Destroy the garment I now wear or anything in my world and I will reproduce it again, for my immortal head cannot be destroyed.” Potential reality exists eternally regardless of what’s present in actuality. Destroy my garment in actuality and I’ll reproduce it again, as your destruction didn’t touch the potential version of it. And in the dream, Neville gave this woman the eyes to see that fact – i.e., his teachings led her to this conclusion.
Start now to practice what the Bible calls repentance, which is a radical change of attitude. No matter what it is, if it does not conform to your ideal change it by subjectively appropriating your goal. Remain faithful to it and no earthly power can keep you from attaining it. Go all out and walk on the water! Don’t be like Peter, whose understanding told him imagination didn’t make sense (symbolized as his feet), or you will drown in the sea of illusion. Imagination, speaking to his faith, said: “Peter, come,” and as Peter walked, he looked down to see how this was possible, and sank. My friend, who did not look down, walked on the water in the direction of his wish fulfilled - and it was.
When you look down at the water it’s because you’re looking for that path of stones – you’re looking for the actuality that makes the potentiality possible. When you don’t see that actuality, you sink.
Why do you feel compelled to look in the first place? Peter’s understanding was so backwards that even as he was walking on the water he needed to look down to see by which actual means he was doing so. And most of us are like Peter – even when we’re walking on the water of potentiality, we feel compelled to look down and check to make sure there are stones underneath our feet. Though we’ve already done the work of persisting in the potential reality of our choosing, we have to check to make sure the actual 3D path we decided we must travel on is there underneath us.
And, even if we’re 99% of the way toward our destination (the actualization of our desire), when we look down and don’t see stones, we immediately sink.
All of the Bible stories will be fulfilled literally on different levels of your being. You will experience them all, because you are Jesus Christ. Blake tells us so beautifully: “Desires and perceptions of Man, untaught by anything but organs of sense must be limited to objects of sense; therefore, God becomes Man that Man may become God.”
If you only knew what your organs of sense reveal, you would never perceive anything beyond them. It would be horrible to remain an organ of sense and never transcend it. But God brought creation with him when he became humanity, and you are here to awaken to that fact! If God did not become you, you would be an animated body, limited to all that your sense organs would reveal. But having become you, God is awakening and will give you desires and their fulfillments, far beyond the wildest dreams of those who are still limited to the organs of sense.
If you had no access to the potential, and only to the actual, you’d be limited to a single track of reality. You could paint a bowl of fruit only if you saw one in front of you – and you could only paint it exactly as you saw it. When you can walk on water without needing a path of stones, though, you gain the power to bring potentials beyond your wildest imagination into the world of actualization.
When Blake said: “All that you behold, though it appears without, it is within you,” he meant it. Being an incurrent eyewitness like my friend, Blake saw God’s mystery of salvation clearly. I urge you to exercise your divine right by using your imagination. Be like my friend who is now consciously feeding his pig. Every moment of time you have the opportunity to feed your pig. When someone phones to tell of their misfortune, revise their words. Go about your business of creation on the inside, and do not do a thing on the outside. Use your imagination and let your words come into being!
All things are possible to you, because you are all imagination and imagination creates reality. Knowing what you want, imagine you have it. Knowing what you want to be, imagine you are it. Subjectively appropriate your objective hope and you have assumed a virtue you did not have. Ask no one to help, and do not feel below the water for something to fall back on if imagination doesn’t work. Instead, learn to count on your true Self, who is Jesus Christ!
Jesus, your own wonderful human imagination, is your hope of glory, and there is no other Christ. Defined as God’s power and wisdom, Imagination is in travail until Christ is formed in you. On that day your history will be changed from BC to AD, and every year thereafter will be the year of the Lord. Having been formed in you, Christ is born, and the words of Isaiah become yours: “For to you a child is born and a son is given. The government shall then be upon your shoulders, and you will be the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. And of your reign there shall be no end.”
Start now to look upon the great mystery of creation as the subjective appropriation of your objective hope. Dwell upon my words. Put them into practice, and you will experience their fulfillment, for all things exist within you!
Now let us go into the silence.
Neville ends with a single call to action, and essentially, it’s this: stop looking down at the water. When I look out and see the place I’d like to go, I’ve already begun walking across the surface. I’m traveling on the path of potential; I’m feeding my pig. When I turn toward the actual for confirmation that I’m actually moving, I sink. It’s like looking at your pig eating and saying, “he’s not fat, thus he is not eating.” Or, it’s like imagining a painting of a bowl of fruit, then reaching out to touch your paintbrush to the canvas and saying, “There is no painting.”
This is no painting in actuality, but there are many paintings in potentiality. If you sit there staring at a blank canvas telling yourself there is no painting, then the painting can never actually come into being. For that actualization to occur, you have to look away from the canvas and into imagination so that the potential painting can lay out its own path to existence.
As always, good luck.

Last night, I watched Lost Highway with Chris Hanson, Make-Up FX Assistant on the film
Chris is in a relationship with my beautiful spooky sister in law (see pic!). He is still working in special effects and has his own studio here in Salt Lake City. Last night, my husband and I invited Chris and my SIL over for a watch party and we got to watch Lost Highway with his amazing commentary of his firsthand experience working on the film. Here are some fun facts, mostly about how all the effects were constructed:
-Chris created a "life cast" of Patricia Arquette's face and body, which is a sculpting technique where you apply a molding material like silicone all over the person to create an exact sculpture of them. This sculpture of Patricia was used as her dead body in the film. The blood/gore surrounding her was actually pig guts. Lynch liked to assist with the gory effects. Chris watched Lynch, who was drinking a reddish health drink/smoothie, blow all the liquid over the walls through his straw to create blood splatter. Chris said after the film, Arquette asked him to make her a Godzilla costume for her little boy!
-Chris did Balthazar Getty's facial prosthetics. Lynch actually wanted Getty's face to be half his own and half Bill Pullman's. Unfortunately, Chris and the other FX staff couldn't get this to look good enough, so they settled on Getty's face being half mangled instead. Chris said he went to Carl's Jr with Getty lol.
-When Getty kills Michael Massee (Andy) and he is lying impaled on the glass coffee table, Chris created a fiberglass mold of Andy's torso and propped him up on it so he could comfortably lay at that angle while filming.
-Robert Blake's (mystery man) ears were folded forward using putty.
-Pullman and Arquette's house (actually one of Lynch's houses) was tiny. Chris said the film crew was basically against the wall while filming in the living room and bedroom.
-When Bill Pullman slits Robert Loggia's (Dick Laurent's) throat, Chris used Karo syrup for his blood. However, Chris said it was so cold in Death Valley that night that the Karo syrup kept freezing, so there wasn't as much blood as he wanted. When Dick Laurent gets shot, his "brains" are actually an exploded condom filled with clams. Chris said he bought the condoms on the drive out to Death Valley.
-The last scene of the movie- Bill Pullman screaming while driving and his face distorting- Chris was in the back seat! He covered Pullman's face with prosthetic skin and added balloons underneath. The balloons had air tubes connected to them which Chris was manually inflating and deflating right behind Pullman to create the facial distortion.
-Chris sat next to Marilyn Manson at the screening. He said that when the screening ended, he thought to himself, "Hmm this movie isn't very good." He said that when you work on a film and you know what could have been (such as Getty's face being half Bill Pullman), it can sometimes be disappointing seeing the final product. Marilyn was only in the film because they were trying to draw a broader audience.
-Chris said in his 13 years of living in Los Angeles, he only went to two Hollywood parties, and at both of them, Gary Busey was there "drunk as hell with hookers." hahaha
Well, there it is! You can follow Chris on instagram @ docmonsterfx. He's a very cool guy.

Directors at the Box Office: Terrence Malick

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Terrence Malick's turn.
Malick's younger years faced tragedy, as his younger brother died as he faced pressure over his musical studies. Malick graduated from Harvard College in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude. He then studied philosophy at Oxford. After a disagreement with his advisor, Gilbert Ryle, over Malick's thesis on the concept of world in Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein, Malick left Oxford without a degree. One of his most notable achievements was translating Heidegger's The Essence of Reasons into English. After returning to the United States, Malick taught philosophy at MIT while freelancing as a journalist. He subsequently earned an MFA from the brand-new AFI Conservatory in 1969, and he got contacts in the industry to start working as an uncredited writer. After one of his screenplays, Deadhead Miles, was made into what Paramount Pictures believed was an unreleasable film, Malick decided to direct his own scripts.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

Badlands (1973)

"In 1959, a lot of people were killing time. Kit and Holly were killing people."
His directorial debut. It stars Martin Sheen, Sissy Spacek, Ramon Bieri and Warren Oates. Loosely based on the real-life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate in 1958, the film follows Holly Sargis, a 15-year old who goes on a killing spree with her partner, Kit Carruthers.
In 1970, Malick started writing the script while on a road trip. Malick paid $25,000 of his own funds, while the remainder of his share was raised from professionals such as doctors and dentists. Sissy Spacek was chosen, despite being unknown and only appearing in one film, as Malick found her small-town Texas roots and accent were perfect for the part of the naive impressionable high school girl. In fact, he allowed her to help in the creative progress and accomodated the script based on her experiences. When Martin Sheen was suggested by the casting director, Malick was hesitant, thinking he was too old for the role. Spacek wrote in her autobiography that "the chemistry was immediate. He was Kit. And with him, I was Holly."
The film carried a low $300,000 budget and most of the crew was non-union. The film had a somewhat troubled production history: several members of the crew clashed with Malick, and another was severely injured when an explosion occurred while filming the fire scene. Jack Fisk served as art director for the film in his first of several collaborations with Malick. During production, Spacek and Fisk fell in love and got married one year after the year came out.
There are no available numbers for the film's original release. The only numbers we've got is a $54,396 run it had on the UK and New Zealand 15 years ago. The film received acclaim, particularly for its cinematography, soundtrack and acting, and has been named as one of the greatest films of the 1970s. It successfully launched the careers of Malick, Sheen and Spacek.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $0.
  • Worldwide gross: $54,396.

Days of Heaven (1978)

"You've got to go through Hell before you get to Heaven."
His second film. It stars Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard and Linda Manz. Set in 1916, it tells the story of Bill and Abby, lovers who travel to the Texas Panhandle to harvest crops for a wealthy farmer. Bill persuades Abby to claim the fortune of the dying farmer by tricking him into a false marriage.
While on a trip to Cuba with producer Ben Schneider, Malick started working on the film. Malick had tried and failed to get Dustin Hoffman or Al Pacino to star in the film, and John Travolta auditioned for and won the lead role of Bill, but ABC-TV wouldn't let him out of his contract for his series Welcome Back Kotter. Impressed by The Wild Child, Malick asked Néstor Almendros to become the film's cinematographer, winning him over with his knowledge and willingness to use little studio lighting. They drew inspiration from painters such as Johannes Vermeer, Edward Hopper, and Andrew Wyeth, as well as photo-reporters from the start of the 20th century.
According to Almendros, the production was not "rigidly prepared", allowing for improvisation. Daily call sheets could have been more detailed, and the schedule changed to suit the weather. This upset some Hollywood crew members not used to working this way. Most crew members were used to a "glossy style of photography" and felt frustrated because Almendros did not give them much work. Daily, he asked them to turn off the lights they had prepared for him. Some crew members said that Almendros and Malick did not know what they were doing. The tension led to some of the crew quitting the production. Malick supported what Almendros was doing and pushed the film's look further, removing more lighting aids and leaving the image bare.
While the photography yielded the director satisfactory results, the rest of the production was difficult. The actors and crew reportedly viewed Malick as cold and distant. After two weeks of shooting, Malick was so disappointed with the dailies, he "decided to toss the script, go Leo Tolstoy instead of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, wide instead of deep [and] shoot miles of film with the hope of solving the problems in the editing room." Post-production took 2 years, as Malick had a difficult time shaping the film and getting the pieces to go together. He experimented with voice-overs from Linda Manz's character, scrapped much of the film's dialogue, replacing it with Manz's voice-over, which served as an oblique commentary on the story.
Schneider was disappointed with Malick. He had confronted Malick numerous times about missed deadlines and broken promises. Due to further cost overruns, he had to ask Paramount for more money, which he preferred not to do. When they screened a demo for Paramount and made their pitch, the studio was impressed and reportedly "gave Malick a very sweet deal at the studio, carte blanche, essentially".
Despite a heavy push from Paramount, the film was a box office bomb, earning just $3.4 million in its run. The film also received a polarizing response; while the cinematography was praised, the storyline and structure were points of criticism. But time was kind to the film, eventually being acknowleged as one of the best films of the 1970s. Despite losing money, Charles Bluhdorn (who ran Paramount's parent company Gulf + Western), loved it so much he offered Malick $1 million for his next project, whatever it was.
Malick began developing a project for Paramount named Q, that explored the origins of life on earth. During pre-production, he suddenly moved to Paris and disappeared from public view for years.
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $3,446,749. ($16.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $3,485,264.

The Thin Red Line (1998)

"Every man fights his own war."
His third film. Based on the novel by James Jones, it stars Jim Caviezel, Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, Ben Chaplin, George Clooney, John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Elias Koteas, Jared Leto, Dash Mihok, Tim Blake Nelson, Nick Nolte, John C. Reilly, Larry Romano, John Savage and John Travolta. It tells a fictionalized version of the Battle of Mount Austen, which was part of the Guadalcanal Campaign in the Pacific Theater of the Second World War, and portrays U.S. soldiers of C Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division.
In 1978, Malick was approached by producer Bobby Geisler, and both exchanged different ideas for films that never materialized. Ten years later, Geisler visited him in Paris, and Malick was interested in adapting either Molière's Tartuffe or James Jones' The Thin Red Line. The following year, Malick wrote a 300-page script. As he slowly worked on the film, the producers earned his trust by providing him with reliable sources, paying his travel plans and getting him a mortgage in Paris. By 1995, Sony was involved, but new studio chairman John Calley did not think Malick could make his movie with the proposed $52 million budget. 20th Century Fox picked up the project, with the condition that Malick cast five known stars.
In 1995, once word went out that Malick was making another movie after many years, numerous actors approached him, flooding the casting directors until they had to announce they wouldn't be accepting more requests. Sean Penn told Malick that he would appear for just one dollar. Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Gary Oldman, and George Clooney offered to work for a fraction and some even offered to work for free. Bruce Willis even went as far as offering to pay for first-class tickets for the casting crew, to get a few lines for the movie. Before the casting was finalized, Nicolas Cage had lunch with Malick in Hollywood in February 1996. Malick went off to scout locations and tried calling Cage that summer only to find out that his phone number had been disconnected. Tom Sizemore, however, was offered a more substantial role in Saving Private Ryan and, when he could not contact Malick for several days, decided to do Spielberg's film instead. Edward Norton flew out to Austin and met Malick, who had been impressed by the actor's screen test for Primal Fear. Matthew McConaughey reportedly took a day off filming A Time to Kill to see Malick. Others followed, including William Baldwin, Edward Burns, Josh Hartnett, Crispin Glover, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Stephen Dorff, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Malick's unconventional filming techniques included shooting part of a scene during a bright, sunny morning only to finish it weeks later at sunset. He made a habit of pointing the camera away during an action sequence and focus on a parrot, a tree branch or other fauna. Malick's reputation and working methods commanded great respect among the actors, with both Woody Harrelson and John Savage staying on for an extra month after they finished all of their scenes just to watch him at work.
Despite a big cast, some names were left out. Bill Pullman, Lukas Haas and Mickey Rourke performed but their scenes were eventually cut, while Billy Bob Thornton recorded narration that was scrapped. Editor Leslie Jones was on location for 5 months and rarely saw Malick, who left her to her own devices. After principal photography wrapped, she came back with a five-hour first cut and spent 7 months editing, with Thornton contributing 3 hours of narrative voice-over material. It was at this point that editor Billy Weber joined and they spent 13 months in post-production and the last 4 months mixing the film, using four Avid machines with a fifth added at one point. Malick edited the footage one reel at a time with the sound off while listening to a Green Day CD.
The editing resulted in many of the well-known cast members being on screen for only a brief period. John Travolta and George Clooney's appearances are little more than cameos, yet Clooney's name appears prominently in the marketing of the movie. The unfinished film was screened for the New York press in December 1998 and Adrien Brody attended a screening to find that his originally significant role, "to carry the movie", as he put it, had been reduced to two lines and approximately five minutes of screen time, while Malick changed the lead role to Caviezel. Brody actually shared his frustration:
"I was so focused and professional, I gave everything to it, and then to not receive everything... in terms of witnessing my own work. It was extremely unpleasant because I’d already begun the press for a film that I wasn’t really in. Terry obviously changed the entire concept of the film. I had never experienced anything like that. You know the expression ‘Don’t believe the hype’? Well, you shouldn’t."
The film started on limited release before expanding. The film failed to double its budget, although it earned almost $100 million worldwide. The film received critical acclaim, particularly for its philosophical depiction of war, Malick's direction, musical score, cinematography, screenplay, editing, and performances. It received 7 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, with Malick nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Malick rested for 20 years and then came back with a banger.
  • Budget: $52,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $36,400,491. ($69.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $98,126,565.

The New World (2005)

"Once discovered, it was changed forever."
His fourth film. It stars Colin Farrell, Q'orianka Kilcher, Christopher Plummer, Christian Bale, August Schellenberg, Wes Studi, David Thewlis, Yorick van Wageningen and John Savage. It depicts the founding of the Jamestown, Virginia, settlement and inspired by the historical figures Captain John Smith, Pocahontas of the Powhatan tribe, and Englishman John Rolfe.
After The Thin Red Line, Malick worked on a film about Che Guevara and his failed revolution in Bolivia. When financing had yet to come through, Malick was offered the chance to direct The New World (a project he worked on since the 1970s) and left the Guevara project in March 2004. Christopher Plummer, while respectful of Malick, found the experience very frustrating. He told Malick "to get a writer" and complained about a scene where "this very emotional scene that I had suddenly was background noise." He said he would never work with Malick ever again, also telling him "you are so boring. You get in these ruts. You’ve got to get yourself a writer."
The film received mixed reviews from critics, who disliked its unfocused narrative and runtime. The audience hated it even more, and the film bombed with just $49 million worldwide. Nevertheless, Emmanuel Lubezki received an Oscar nomination for its cinematography. In the years since, it has been re-appraised.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $12,712,093. ($20.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $49,334,775.

The Tree of Life (2011)

"Nothing stands still."
His fifth film. The film stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain and Tye Sheridan. It follows the impressionistic story of a Texas family in the 1950s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.
After Days of Heaven, Malick started working on Q, a film about the origin of life. Malick had an idea for a film that would be "a history of the cosmos up through the formation of the Earth and the beginnings of life." It would include elements such as a section set in the Middle East during World War I, and an underwater minotaur dreaming about the evolution of the universe. One day, Malick "just stopped" working on the film and left for Paris.
Decades later, Malick got help from a producer to get the project made. Brad Pitt got involved through his company, Plan B, and was eventually cast as the lead. At one point, Colin Farrell and Mel Gibson were attached. Heath Ledger was set to play the role of Mr. O'Brien, but dropped out (due to recurring sicknesses) a month before his death in early 2008. Sean Penn was proud of the film, although he said, "The screenplay is the most magnificent one that I've ever read but I couldn't find that same emotion on screen... A clearer and more conventional narrative would have helped the film without, in my opinion, lessening its beauty and its impact."
Malick disliked the look of computer-generated imagery. So, after nearly 30 years away from Hollywood, famed special effects supervisor Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey) contributed to the visual effects work on the film. Trumbull asked Malick, "Why not do it the old way? The way we did it in 2001?" Working with visual effects supervisor Dan Glass, Trumbull used a variety of materials for the creation of the universe sequence. "We worked with chemicals, paint, fluorescent dyes, smoke, liquids, CO2, flares, spin dishes, fluid dynamics, lighting and high speed photography to see how effective they might be."
Originally scheduled for 2009, the film was delayed until 2011 due to Malick still working on post-production. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it garnered a polarizing response; it was met with both boos and applause. In a surprising move, it won the Palme d'Or. At the box office, the film earned $61 million worldwide, almost doubling its budget. Even with the polarizing response, it was still received with thunderous acclaim, with some proclaiming it as Malick's magnum opus as well as one of the greatest films of the century. Malick once again received an Oscar nomination for Best Director, while the film was also nominated for Best Picture.
  • Budget: $32,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $13,305,665. ($18.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $61,721,826.

To the Wonder (2013)

His sixth film. It stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams, and Javier Bardem. The film chronicles a couple who, after falling in love in Paris, struggle to keep their relationship from falling apart after moving to the United States.
Malick and his crew adopted an experimental approach. Actors described working without a screenplay or the use of lights. Likewise, cinematographer on the film, Emmanuel Lubezki, was given instructions to be “in the eye of the hurricane” — in the middle of a scene, constantly interacting with the characters. Lubezki called the film "abstract", and described it as being less tied to theatrical conventions and more purely cinematic than any prior film directed by Malick. Jessica Chastain, Rachel Weisz, Amanda Peet, Barry Pepper and Michael Sheen were originally part of the film, but no footage of their performances was kept for the final cut.
The film only received a limited release, earning less than $3 million. It also received mixed reviews, as many found its narrative emotionally unsatisfying. Interestingly, this was the last film reviewed by Roger Ebert. He gave it a 3.5/4 and wrote:
"A more conventional film would have assigned a plot to these characters and made their motivations more clear. Malick, who is surely one of the most romantic and spiritual of filmmakers, appears almost naked here before his audience, a man not able to conceal the depth of his vision."
  • Budget: $0.
  • Domestic gross: $587,615. ($782,771 adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,801,166.

Knight of Cups (2016)

"A quest."
His seventh film. The film stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Freida Pinto, Cherry Jones, Nick Offerman, Clifton Collins Jr., Dane DeHaan, Thomas Lennon, Joel Kinnaman, Jason Clarke, Shea Whigham, Ryan O'Neal, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Corrigan, Fabio, Joe Lo Truglio, Beau Garrett and Nick Kroll. The film follows screenwriter Rick on an odyssey through Los Angeles and Las Vegas as he undertakes a series of adventures with colorful figures, identified by seven tarot cards from the Major Arcana, with Rick as the Knight of Cups.
Although a script was written, Bale received no pages from it, while all other cast members received only pages of internal and verbal monologue for each shooting day. Bale later said that while filming, he was unclear about what the final film would actually be. During production, Malick used a process he calls "torpedoing", where a character is thrown into a scene without the other actors' advance knowledge, forcing them to improvise. In addition to a traditional studio, the cast also recorded their voice-over work in nontraditional places, such as in a van or by the side of the road.
The film received mixed reviews, particularly for its story. The film was another bomb for Malick, barely making it past $1 million.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $566,006. ($731,838 adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $1,026,288.

Voyage of Time (2016)

"Life's journey."
His eighth film. A documentary narrated by Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, the film is an examination of the birth and death of the known universe.
Malick worked on the film since the 1970s, and some ideas from Q are part of the film. It was released in two versions: a forty-minute IMAX version with narration by Brad Pitt, and a 35-millimetre feature-length edition narrated by Cate Blanchett.
Even with the backing of IMAX, the film didn't even make $400,000 at the box office. The IMAX version was met with positive reviews, but the feature-length edition received a more mixed response.
  • Budget: $12,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $55,409. ($71,643 adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $337,038.

Song to Song (2017)

"Love. Obsession. Betrayal."
His ninth film. It stars Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchett. Set in Austin, Texas, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye and BV, and music mogul Cook and the waitress whom he ensnares — chase success through a rock ’n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.
It fared similar reviews to his past films; great performances caught in an unsatisfying narrative. Once again, another box office dud.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $443,684. ($561,711 adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $1,813,453.

A Hidden Life (2019)

"Based on true events."
His 10th film. It stars August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz. The film depicts the life of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer and devout Catholic who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II.
Malick said the film would have a more structured narrative than his previous works, "Lately — I keep insisting, only very lately — have I been working without a script and I've lately repented the idea. The last picture we shot, and we're now cutting, went back to a script that was very well ordered." This makes it his first linear, plot-driven film since The New World. It was filmed in 2016, but it spent three years on post-production.
Surprise surprise, it was another box office bomb for Malick. But it received his best reviews in almost a decade, and was deemed a return to form for Malick after a slate of weak films.
  • Budget: $7,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $1,730,597. ($2.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $4,622,354.

Other Projects

As mentioned, he started as an uncredited writer in the industry. One of those films was Dirty Harry, in which Malick wrote an early draft.
He was originally slated to direct a Che Guevara biopic, but abandoned the film when financing fell through. Steven Soderbergh would later direct from this script, and Malick is credited as a writer on the film.

The Future

Malick's next film is The Way of the Wind, which chronicles many chapters in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. It stars Géza Röhrig, Matthias Schoenaerts, Mark Rylance, Tawfeek Barhom, Aidan Turner, Ben Kingsley, Joseph Fiennes, and Douglas Booth. Filming occurred in 2019, but five years later, there are no updates on the film.

Across those 10 films, he has made $223,323,125 worldwide. That's $22,332,312 per film.

The Verdict

Unreliable. Not even close.
Malick has been unable to make a single profitable film in his career. Of course, the one exception might be Badlands, but we have no box office data from 1973 to corroborate. And that shouldn't be a surprise. His films are way too experimental, and have often been criticized for the lack of plot and character development. That's not for everyone. And some actors have expressed frustration with his post-production, especially because their roles are entirely cut from his films.
At the same time, however, there's a lot to admire about Malick. His films often read like meditative poetry, trying to convey emotion through cinematography and philosophy instead of dialogue or plot. The Thin Red Line has received a huge amount of praise in subsequent years, to the point that some might consider it superior to that year's other war film, Saving Private Ryan (like your OP here). And The Tree of Life has been one of the century's most acclaimed and analyzed films, so clearly Malick knows his magic (I'd put it in the top 5 of the century, but that's just me). Studios know they won't make any money with Malick, but they still want to see his works. And that's fine.
As a fun fact, one of Malick's favorite films is none other than... Zoolander. After hearing that Malick was a fan, Ben Stiller made an in-character happy-birthday video for the director. He not only loves the film, but he often quotes it on set. Now you gotta picture a crew member explaining something to Malick, and then Malick replying with "but why male models?"
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Guillermo del Toro. I'll have to post at least some of his projects that never materialized.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Danny Boyle. One of the most iconic British directors.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
April 8-14 Guillermo del Toro So... no At the Mountains of Madness?
April 15-21 Todd Phillips Who's laughing now?
April 22-28 John Carpenter Is that really it? No more films?
April 29-May 5 Danny Boyle It was a long wait, but 28 Years Later is finally happening.
Who should be next after Boyle? That's up to you.
And to finally answer your question, there's finally a date on Christopher Nolan's post. It was a long wait, but I wanted to know how it will do on Japan before calling it. The post will be on... July 20. Some might think this is too long to wait, but I think it's a fitting date. It is what it is.

2024.04.05 00:34 StadstheEidolon OU Usage Trends - March 2024

With usage stats for March 2024 dropping recently, I figured I'd do some quick analysis on them and go over some fun trends in usage between the various elo brackets. I'll also add some commentary on why this might be, using my subjective knowledge of the current meta in the rapidly evolving whirlwind that is SV OU. I'm not the best SV OU player, but have peaked ladder a few times this generation and can hopefully add some interesting colour to the stats.

For my first go at it, let's review the top 5 Pokemon with the biggest increases in usage from the general population elo bracket (that includes all players) to the 1825+ elo bracket. I've sourced my stats from https://www.smogon.com/stats/2024-03/, Smogon is wonderful in just how much data it provides for nerds like me!

1. Kingambit (23.95% vs 37.64%, +13.68%)

Yes, as much as Kingambit gets memed in every corner of the Pokemon universe, it still doesn't end up getting that much usage among the general playerbase. I'm sure some of this is due to fatigue, both from using it for the last 16 months and getting reverse swept by it for the same duration, not to mention all the fun/annoying Sucker Punch mindgames it creates. But it also goes to show that beyond the jokes, Kingambit still fills out teams really, really well as a 6th mon, and in particular can sweep on your behalf while also being serviceable as an emergency check on your opponents' sweeps with its great typing and strong priority. Movesets are fairly similar between the two groups, but the 1825+ bracket uses Leftovers far more (47.4% vs 35.7%).

2. Zamazenta (6.40% vs 17.74%, +11.34%)

The higher usage of Zama in the 1825+ bracket makes sense to me, with just how good this thing is into the offensive cores that are currently the hot trend right now. Without Dragapult to threaten status or the right defensive answer, a few Iron Defenses behind a substitute can easily clean up a weakened team. The general playerbase seems to still use the offensive sets with EVs into attack and moves like Close Combat, Heavy Slam, and Stone Edge, but these are used much less in the 1825+ bracket, who seems to prefer the more bread-and-butter IronPress + Crunch combination. Roar is also used somewhat more in the 1825+ bracket (16.9% vs 25.6%), a new tech that lets Zama beat opposing Zama and other setup sweepers, such as Bulk Up Great Tusk, at the cost of the defensive utility of Substitute or an additional coverage move to handle checks like Volcarona.

3. Landorus-Therian (11.67% vs 21.96%, +10.28%)

The (former?) king of OU himself, Lando is back with a vengeance across all of OU, but nowhere is this more pronounced than the 1825+ bracket. In particular, the 'fast taunt' sets have caught on like wildfire as a great way to steal momentum early and keep hazards off the field for offensive teams. Taunt is popular in the general playerbase as well, but not to the same degree (49.44% vs 62.62%). Another very pronounced trend is that the general population still uses Lando's standard STAB move in Earthquake (56.6%), while the 1825+ bracket has chosen newcomer Earth Power (75.9%) as the preferred move, perhaps due to its better matchup against Great Tusk, Glimmora, Garganacl, and others. It remains to be seen if this is just a temporary, volatile trend typical to this generation, or if it'll have some staying power as the meta adapts a bit more to it. Lastly, the 1825+ only seriously considers Rocky Helmet as Lando's item (91.49%), while the general playerbase is much more likely to try Choice Items or Leftovers.

4. Dragapult (17.50% vs 26.04%, +8.53%)

Perhaps due to Zama cruising in at #2, Dragapult also enjoys higher usage in the 1825+ bracket. The fastest unboosted Pokemon in all of OU, Dragapult often functions as an excellent stopgap to opposing threats. It also has several good choices to take advantage of the switches it forces, from maintaining momentum with U-Turn, to statusing opposing threats with Will-o-Wisp and Thunder Wave, to simply denting the opposing team with a Choice Item. However, the different brackets have chosen to take advantage of this abundance in quite different ways. The biggest difference is the usage in Choice Items, with the general population massively preferring Choice Specs (23.74% vs 4.12%) and the 1825+ bracket massively preferring Choice Band (9.49% vs 26.17%). While Heavy-Duty Boots are the most popular item in both samples, the 1825+ bracket prefers them quite a bit more (25.25% vs 42.44%). I can begin to guess why boots are more popular in the 1825+ bracket, with Pult being well-situated to take advantage of smart double switching and enjoying not getting worn down, but I'm quite surprised that Choice Band is so much more popular there, especially with the recent rise of Lando. Perhaps having the good lead matchup into Glimmora is being valued, or the stronger U-Turns punish opposing switches a bit harder than firing off neutral Shadow Balls.

5. Samurott-Hisui (7.56% vs 15.56%, +8.00%)

Laying down spikes while also attacking (and fairly hard, at that!) has been a cool concept since Hamurott was introduced, and it shows few signs of slowing down now. Not only does it match up well into very popular staples like Gliscor, Slowking-Galar, and Gholdengo, it also plays well on the offensive teams that have sprung up recently. It also has just enough set diversity to always get the job done, with 3 viable yet distinct Dark-type moves to run (Knock Off, Ceaseless Edge, Sucker Punch), Encore, several Water STAB options and priority in Aqua Jet, and Sacred Sword for coverage. The general population seems to have a disdain for Knock Off and Encore, but the 1825+ bracket absolutely loves them (38.40% vs 81.20% for Knock Off, 14.85% vs 53.38% for Encore). Both of these make a certain amount of sense, with Knock Off helping Hamurott make progress against resilient fat cores, and Encore being a move that requires a lot of good prediction and timing both to use and take advantage of effectively. The 1825+ bracket also continues to have a stronger preference for Heavy-Duty Boots (14.93% vs 50.51%), which also helps Hamurott switch in several times in a game to make progress, gets more hazards up, or exploit an enemy with Encore.

I hope this was an enjoyable read, feedback is appreciated! Depending on the response, I may make another post detailing the 5 biggest decreases in usage between the general population and 1825+ bracket, biggest changes month over month, or another idea that seems interesting to talk about.

2024.04.01 03:42 stumbling_disaster My First Bingo (2023) - All Hard Mode

My First Bingo (2023) - All Hard Mode
I'm one of those people that once they decide to do something, they go all-in. That's how I ended up committing to an all hard-mode card for my very first bingo. Not the smartest choice, but I read a lot of great books. I'm also a chronic procrastinator, so I just finished my final read yesterday. I'm not sure if I'm going to participate next year, as now I'm in the middle of way too many series. On with the complete card and mini-reviews! (All credit goes to u/shift_shaper for the design of the card.)

https://preview.redd.it/h2gxkm1rvrrc1.png?width=1371&format=png&auto=webp&s=b5ac61a9c5e85bc739260f1bb3104769fbbbecb7
1. Title with a Title – The Witness for the Dead by Katherine Addison
I adored The Goblin Emperor when I read it (and I still want a direct sequel with Maia as the MC again), so I knew I had to pick this spin-off up. Celehar, with his interesting profession, was a side character from the first book that I wanted to know more about. It was amazing to watch him grow and recover from his trauma over the course of the book, and gaining new allies, all while solving a multi-faceted mystery.
2. Superheroes – Vicious by V.E. Schwab
Another book I've been meaning to read for a while, but I'm just not a big superhero girly. The morally grey characters absolutely made this book. With each time jump I was left wondering who I should be rooting for. The entire concept behind the powers and where they come from is amazing. It got a little angsty at times, but was still great.
3. Bottom of the TBR – Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
My very first Sanderson novel! I've been meaning to pick this up forever, and I'm so glad I did. I loved this and I really hope it gets that sequel eventually. The characters and the magic system were definitely the best part. My only complaint was that the ending felt a little rushed.
4. Magical Realism – Bunny by Mona Awad
This was a fever dream of a book. I think I enjoyed the ride and all the commentary, but it was pretty confusing, especially the ending.
5. Young Adult – A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid
I picked this up on a whim and it was a pretty good time. The atmosphere was the best part for me. I don't know if all the topics covered (mental illness, sexism, racism, etc.) were handled perfectly, but it was still good. It turned out to not be the most memorable read for me.
6. Mundane Jobs – Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree
I was worried to pick this up because of all the hype, but it turns out that sometimes that hype really is warranted. This book hit just the right cozy vibes without being boring. Watching Viv grow over time and creating new friendships (and a romance) was heart-warming.
7. Published in the 00s – The City & the City by China Miéville
Suffice to say I've never read anything like this; the premise, the prose, the setting, and the genre-bending weirdness all combined together to create this one-of-a-kind novel. It was definitely harder to grasp than many other speculative fictions works, at least to me. My main complaint is that the characters felt a bit flat, but everything else made it well worth the read.
8. Angels and Demons – Small Miracles by Olivia Atwater
This book was absolutely charming, and I loved the characters so much. The vibes were immaculate. I'm so glad the bingo put this on my radar.
9. Short Stories – The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu
I struggled to get through this. Not because it was bad, but because it was devastating. Do not let the cover fool you, the real-world atrocities and events in Asia that inspired these stories will gut you. All the Flavors and The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary were my two favorites.
10. Horror – Comfort Me with Apples by Catherynne M. Valente
I was so obsessed with this little book. After I finished it I spent forever researching the inspiration (which I can't get into cause spoilers). The twist is soo good. Just an incredibly written feminist piece that I adore. It's a shame the Goodreads rating is so low.
11. Self or Indie Published – Bitter Medicine by Mia Tsai
The character work was not my favorite. Both main characters felt bland and did not act like the near-immortal beings they were supposed to be. They felt young and inconsistent. I also found Tony to be an absolutely insufferable character who annoyed me whenever he got page-time. Honestly, I felt a lot more empathy for the little brother in comparison to the other siblings. I also think the pacing felt off. I liked the premise and initial world-building a lot, just not the execution.
12. Set in the Middle East – The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem
I really didn't think I was going to enjoy this book when I picked it up (fantasy with a dose of enemies-to-lovers romance), but I wanted to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did! It made my top 10 reads last year. I thought Sylvia as a main character was great, and watching her grapple with her identity and the expectations of everyone around her was fascinating. Her journey of learning how to love and trust other people again made me so happy. I really liked the side characters, the banter, and the world-building, though I found the magic system a bit confusing. The dialogue was just a hair cringey and over-the-top at times, but I loved it all the same.
13. Published in 2023 – Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Törsz
This was a little bit of a letdown, despite being good. After seeing all the glowing reviews and the excitement of the FIF book club, I expected this to be incredible. I enjoyed the Nicholas/Collins duo best of the characters which is unfortunate considering most of the focus is supposed to be on the two sisters. I also definitely preferred the pacing of the second half over the first. As far as plot, I do think everything went a little too neatly/easily, and it resolved so quickly. Don't even get me started on the insta-love with Joanna that felt right of a YA novel. I liked the writing and the world-building a lot though.
14. Multiverse – Recursion by Blake Crouch
I've been meaning to pick this book (and Dark Matter tbh) up forever. The concept of this book is just amazing. It had me pretty mind-fucked for a while. The ending dragged a bit and the writing wasn't my favorite. The main character was also pretty grating at times. Still, 10/10 for an original concept.
15. POC Author – The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Ann Older
I'm getting ready to pick up the sequel to this one! I loved the lesbian detective duo in space concept. I found a lot of the language and some of the world-building a bit confusing. Mossa and Pleiti carried this book, and I actually don't remember the mystery very well at this point. Still a good read.
16. Book Club – Small Spaces by Katherine Arden
I don't read a ton of middle-grade, but this was pretty fun. I've always hated scarecrows, so this was perfect for me. The main character is grappling with grief and having a hard-time at school, all while dealing with horrifying scarecrows (and more).
17. Novella – Walking to Aldebaran by Adrian Tchaikovsky
This book was a bit too British for me. There were definitely some sentences that may as well have been in anther language. The entire concept of this book (and that ending, holy shit) are incredible. I would definitely recommend this book. There were just some things that didn't quite work for me as far as writing and the MC goes.
18. Mythical Beasts – Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee
The writing was beautiful, and my primary issue with this work was simply that it was too short. I would've loved more time with these characters rather than the multiple timeline jumps. If this had been a full-length stand-alone novel it would've been near-perfect. Also, I got to have my copy signed by Fonda Lee at a local book event!!!
19. Elemental Magic – Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Definitely a hard book to get through as an adult, but I think if I'd read this when I was younger I would've enjoyed it more. It definitely feels young, and in 2024 it's not going to be as interesting. The magic system is nice enough, and the (sometimes poorly done) Russian inspiration was a unique take. The characters left something to be desired.
20. Myths and Retellings – What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
I am a T. Kingfisher stan to be honest. This was an incredible retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher. The whole unique nonbinary gender concept (with a nonbinary MC) in this novella was fascinating. It was sufficiently horrifying (ugh fungus). The characters are just so much fun. I already read the sequel too, and it was almost as good!
21. Queernorm Setting – The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart
My last read for the bingo and thankfully it was a huge win. The magic system and world-building is unique and fascinating. The characters are pretty interesting, especially Lin. The twists had me jaw-dropped. I saw a few coming, and others just astounded me. I can't wait to read-on with the series.
22. Coastal/Island Setting – The Bone Ships by R.J. Barker
The main character of this one could sometimes get on my nerves, but it was good seeing his growth. We also love an older, bad-ass female character 'round these parts, so Lucky Meas stole the show. The concept of the bone ships was awesome. I'm not usually one for a ton of action, or even pirates to be honest, but this one was definitely a winner.
23. Druids – Becoming a Druid by Mike Mollman
I liked the nature themes and aspects of the magic system. However, the main character could be too unlikeable at times. The deaths of some of the characters didn't have weight; it felt very brushed over by our main character in particular. Also, the pacing felt choppy, like we were just jumping from one scene to the next.
24. Robots – Exit Strategy by Martha Wells
This series is one of my absolute favorites. I can't say much about this book without spoiling the others, but I just love Murderbot as an MC so, so much. Sometimes I find a robot a little too relatable. The writing, plots, and characters within this series are perfect.
25. Sequel – The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik
The first book in this series is one of my favorite books hands-down, but I found this last book to be the weakest. I didn't like where the story went and the characters that were focused on. I did enjoy the ending thankfully.

2024.03.31 22:59 Fearless_Run8121 Is there a German children’s song about a chimney sweeper and a girl?

SOLVED!
Hi!
Is there a German children’s song about a chimney sweeper and a girl? (”schon steig figure geht spazieren gehen”)
I am not German and I don’t speak German. That’s why I cannot find the song on Google.
I would like to know what this song is called and if I can listen to it on YouTube.
The lyrics in English are something like this:
”A chimney sweeper went for a walk
Came to a beautiful house
A beautiful girl looks out of the window
Girl, will you come with me?
I must ask my Mother
Mother, can I go with him?
You must ask your Father
Father, can I go with him?
No, you can’t child.
The girl runs after the chimney sweeper.
Mother and Father run after the girl.
Soon they are dancing in their wedding.”
Thank you for all your help!

2024.03.31 22:19 Apprehensive_Fee6939 Bingo Blackout, phew!

Hello, this is the first year I did bingo. I discovered it mid July so I did my best to catch up to the prompts and balance it out with my SFF bookclub. I'd have loved to do HM for all, but I had to fit the bookclub's picks somehow. It was both fun and torture, will do again!
TL;DR:
Fave prompt: Coastal - I like a cool setting.
Least fave prompt: Druid, which I swapped.
Fave book Features Robots: A Close and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers
Least fave book Mythical Beasts: Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maeher**
Yes Ice planet Barbarians was better than Assistant, I'm just as shocked as you.
Visual card: https://imgur.com/gallery/CyaUSnB
Title with a title - Prince Of Thorns by Mark Lawrence
The craftsmanship and intricate character work of this books deserves 5 stars, especially as a debut novel (who hurt you, Mr. Lawrence?😱), but I was utterly horrified the entire time and the 1st half felt meandering, so I lowered the rating a bit. I don't talk about plots much in my reviews, but I'll say Jorg, the titular prince, is a rotten cinnamon bun. Yes you heard me! This was a raw exploration of nature vs nurture and Jorg shows us how his past has shaped his present, sometimes in such gruesome detail that it was hard to keep reading
Superheroes - Upgraded by Blake Crouch HM
I basically read this in one sitting, it's a thrilling page turner and raised a lot of questions on humanity, what rights we have to chage the world how we want, and so many typical Blake Crouch moral dilemmas I wouldn't even know how to start listing them. I did connect less to the main character that in other Blake Crouch books, but iykyk. The pacing was very messy. It started slow, then ramped it all up to 11 and the final few chapters it just... felt odd. Like the author ran out of time to write, but also like a chapter was fully missing.
Bottom of the TBR: Assassin's Fate by Robin Hobb
I don't want to talk about it...I've been preparing for this final page since I started the series in 2019. Fitz and the Fool are beyond a simple book review. I'm torn and at peace simultaneously.
Magical Realism or Literary Fantasy: Circe by Madeline Miller HM
I could not put this book down. Although not my usual epic fantasy pick, the craftsmanship poured into this novel is remarkable. I can always find something to nitpick about and this time it was such a smooth yet rocky journey. Circe certainly made me look at some parts of my life in a new way and isn't that the point of stories? To help you grow and mature and understand others. Needless to say I recommend this, it is like nothing I have ever read and I struggled to stop reading to go to bed.
Young Adult: The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik HM
This is book 3 of the Scholomance so I will be vague. While I enjoyed the serie, El's development in particular and I found the relationships to be endearing (especially in book 2), this final book was too convoluded for me and could have used a lot more finessing or exploring. It is a satisfactory ending and some parts are truly horrific, but I'm not likely to reread.
Mundane Jobs: House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune HM
Someone should have warned me how wholesome and sweet and heartwrenching this book is. It was a a moment of levity amongst all the grimdark and the depressing choices I made for bingo and I adored the pure little friendships, moments of joy, and shy gentle growth of Linus. I had a smile on my face the entire time. I cried, I laughed, I got angry and sad and glad.
Published in the 2000s: Stories of your life and others by Ted Chiang HM
The author is entirely too smart for my intellectual capacity. I first tried his short story Liking what you see for the "5 short stories" prompt, and enjoyed it so much I decided to continue. This collection I thought was high quality prose and conceptS, but a bit of a mess in terms of consistent style and enjoyment. Apart from Story of your life and Tower of Babel which moved me, the rest of the stories were somewhere between self-congratularoty and obnoxious. Ted is a very talented writer and if his intention was to infuriate me and dislike his protagonists, then he did a fantastic job.
Angels and Demons: Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman HM
Interesring premise, disappointing execution. Absurdist fiction just isn't for me. I think this was hyped to no end and mostly because of the tv show chatter I had vastly different expectations of the narrative, meaning I assumed we'd get a LOT more Crowley and Azuraphale and much fewer 1-5 page pov chapters from characters I didn't care about and would never make another appearance.
5 Sff short stories: When the Yogurt took over - by John Scalzi That left a sour taste in my mouth. Mostly because it's a recipe for some weird ChatGPT AI desaster that's getting so close to reality we might get to see it happen in our lifetime.
The ones who walk away from Omelas by Ursula K Leguin This was very sad and depressing. The writing style was odd, so many words for a single line of import. It does raise important questions about utopias and social responsibilities, but it was entirely too long just for that one disturbing line.
Bloodchild by Octavia E Butler Disturbing and disgusting. Idk if I can recommend this. Do not read it while eating chips and salsa, like this idiot.
Mother of Invention by Nnedi Okorafor Eerie and surprisingly heart-warming. I would lile a full novel on this, for an 19 page story it pacled a punch and opened my appetite for more African-futurism.
How to talk to girls at parties by Neil Gaiman I'm entirely too stupid to understand it. Something about poetry and aliens and how girls are like aliens to teenage boys. Skippable.
Horror: At the mountains of Madness by HP Lovecraft
Great imagination, poor storytelling. This read exactly like a scientific paper and it gave me identical emotions: boredom and fatigue. I'm not sure why this book was written, I don't even know the narrator's name, let alone experienced any character development. An endless telling instead of showing, an overwhelming repetition of descriptions or "this thing cannot be described by mere words".
Self pub: NPCs by Drew Hayes
Quick fun read. This was pretty much a classic D&D campaign with a few twists. While it's not a bad story to play out in a campaign irl, not sure it worked that well as a novel. I won't continue the series, but I do recommend this for any D&D newbies wanting to get more familiar with play and tropes.
Set in the M.E.: The Arm of the Sphinx by Josiah Bancroft
Pirates! Steampunk! Zoos! Libraries! I wish I hadn't done this in audio, not because the narration isn't great, it is, but because the plot, fantasy terms, politics and non linear storytelling got me quite confused at times (same for book 1). The moment I switched from audio to physical it went from 3 to 4.5 stars. So yea hard to rate. But this is another very unique book, I enjoyed the new povs and how all actions have consequences. The worldbuilding is exquisite, the characters' growth earned and the reveals are scream-worthy (damn that ending!).
2023: Starter Villain by John Scalzi
Very fast read, really fun and it played with some tropes in ways I found refreshing and delightful. Truthfully this didn't go in the direction I thought it would, it was definitely a humorous/ parody story instead of an anti-hero story, which is my bad as I didn't take the cue from the silly cover!!!
Multiverse: Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
Brutal, gory, horrific, at times funny, maybe a bit odd and certainly imaginative. And then we get to the last 25% and it is indeed weird. It went from a fast paced page turner of a mystery to a convoluted brain bending overexplained slog. I did like the idea of these "overpowered with knowledge" people be studying some very peculiarity specialties and wish we could have gotten more pagetime around that, and less around the mental and physical torture.
POC: The 7 Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka
This book made my heart bleed and I cannot recommend it enough, while simultaneously not being able to recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to suffer alongside Sri Lanka's victims of war and circumstance. If I did have to critique something, it's that I was a bit overwhelmed by details, names, factions and the unknown politics of Sri Lanka's 90s. The confusion was increased by the added supernatural subplot which was ultimately the driving force behind this "whodunit" (and I do apologise, it's much more complex than this, but it is the instigating element).
Readalong: Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Faecett HM
Surprisingly delightful, although nothing revolutionary. The first half of this book was quite dull and DNF-worthy. I only finished it for book club but after half way it got decidedly more interesting. The highlight here was the interesting portrayal of the ice fairies and the side characters who did have their own little lives and added some much needed dimension to a traditional girl meets fairy prince tale.I disliked the plethora of fairy stories dotted throughout the narrative, while I understand they had an exposition role, they pulled me out of the story.
Novella: Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky
It was good. A concept I'm sure we've all thought about at some point and wanted to write a book on it. This particular book is perfectly adequate. Sorry this review isn't more helpful.
Mythical Beasts: Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maeher
Utter garbage. Unreadable. Nothing about it was fun, cute, witty. I could genuinely write a novel myself detailing all the ways in which this wattpad toilet paper material is full of nonsense, but I have better things to do. Sorry but booktok doesn't know sh*t about quality books. Skip this book like it has rabies.
Elemental Magic: Eye of the World by Robert Jordan HM
A summary of EotW: - 200 pages of peasants cussing each other - 20 pages of gory murder - 400 pages of walking - 20 pages of epic exposition and planning - 160 pages of walking in the dark.
I hated most of it for how slow and repetitive the prose was. But Lan and Moiraine made it worth powering through. I'll only continue the series via Rosamund Pike's audiobook.
Myth or retelling: Thornhedge by T Kingfisher HM
This was a very cute, charming Sleeping Beauty retelling, but with all the right twists.Toadling reminded me why kindness is a quality I value so much, with her self sacrifices and her heart too big for her tiny toad body. She was witty, caring and selfless. The family dynamics were the most endearing aspect to me, highlighting how you can always find belonging amongst kin not of your blood.
Queernorm: A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
Unique, confusing, deep and eloquent. Unlike anything I have ever read. Is it weird now I want an imago too? The mystery element of this story kept me interested the entire time, and all else revolves around this plot: the worldbuilding, the political intrigue, the ... slam poetry. This suffered a bit from tell instead of show, usually books havetoo little dialogue for my taste, in this case it was too much. And entirely too clever for my puny brain 😅 I would classify this as an intellectual speculative fiction ode in space. Not so much Pew-Pew Scifi.
Coastal Setting: Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson HM
Cutesy, but this was just ok. Along with Frugal, I am not a fan of the non big Cosmere stories so far. I think this particularly is NOT a good entry point into the Cosmere and whomever says otherwise is delusional. I read my fair share and found it often confusing, trying to keep track / reverse engineer the magic system to check it is correct, which took me out of the story often. Part of my liking this less than Mistborn and SA (yes I love them, let me be!), was because Hoid was the narrator and I found his arbitrary witty nonsensycal commentary irritating. Tress was a lovely character, this reads like a cute fairy tale and overall I'm satisfied with both the journey and the ending. The humour was a miss.
Druid: swap with 1st person POV from 2021: Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon HM
A book that made me laugh even though that probably wasn't the intention. What can I say, this is alien erotica, it did what it needed to do fairly well. It's not my typical genre so I never expected it to be amazing. I will give it credit as it does have a proper plot and some decent worldbuilding. But hea the writing was atrocious and the heroine's pretty blaisé attitude about not being on earth was quote jarring, as was her total lack of care regarding her Earthen life. Also there's a r*pe scene so heads up on that. Can you believe the alien smut out-ranked the medieval romantasy? How embarrassing.
Features Robots: A Close and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers HM
What a charming, cozy read!I knew this series was all about the character interactions and found families, and this did not disappoint. I've always been fascinated by the morality and humanity of AIs ever since watching that very old film with Robbin Williams, Bicentennial Man, which absolutely broke my heart. The characters were endearing and especially Sitra the AI had a very realistic joirney, the worldbuilding was delightful as well, with quirky rituals and a surprisingly well handled view of gender and social roles (without being too hamfisted!).I'll happily recommend this book to fans of TJ Klune and anyone who likes a cozy yet heartfelt slice of life story.
Sequel: Dresden Peace Talks by Jim Butcher HM
This is book 16 so I will try to be vague. I don't know what happened with this story. It is obviously a book cut in half so rating and reviewing this one without Battle Ground seems pointless. All I can say for now is that it just seems a big set up and nowhere near as entertaining as previous Dresden stories. The Lara sexy googly eyes got really old really fast. I got over this quirk of Harry's early on, accepted it as part of his character flaws, but whenever there's a major Vampire plot in these books, this seems to be soooo prominent. Still one of my favourite series.
Sorry this is so long 😅

2024.03.31 21:25 Faboover 4 Years of Making Videos on RWBY Volume 6

Introduction
Hi, I’m Fabian. I run a YouTube Channel called Faboover in which I post Let’s Plays, Fan-Trailers, AMVs, Toonami Promos, and Toonami Music Videos. I also make Video Essays discussing, analyzing, and criticizing RWBY, which I started doing with RWBY Volume 4 back in 2017.
Over a 4 Year Period (2019-2023), I made 5 Videos discussing multiple aspects about RWBY Volume 6. The video series is titled “Thoughts” and covers my Thoughts on the Topics of Story, Animation & Editing, Design, and whatever Miscellaneous Topics can be included in each. What I want to do here is go over what went into each of these Videos I made this time around for Volume 6 and why it took me so long to produce them. I also want to finish this up by explaining what I’m going to be doing for Future Videos for RWBY.
Links to the RWBY Volume 6 Thoughts Videos are provided below with the Date I released them and how long each are.
Thoughts - RWBY Vol. 6: Story (12/1/19, 30:23)
Thoughts - RWBY Vol. 6: Animation & Editing (7/1/20, 30:55)
Thoughts - RWBY Vol. 6: Design Pt. 1/2 (4/15/21, 26:28)
Thoughts - RWBY Vol. 6: Design Pt. 2/2 (9/12/21, 35:36)
Final Thoughts - RWBY Vol. 6 (10/23/23. 1:09:30)

Story Video
This is pretty standard fare for me as it closely resembles how I’ve done this Video for Volumes 4 and 5 in which I talk about the Characters and Overall Story Stuff for RWBY Volume 6. The change up here is how Ruby is the last Character and Topic for the Video after getting into all of the Other Characters and Overall Plot Stuff for Volume 6.
The reason I had Ruby as the Last Topic for the Video is because of how I felt it would be best to go over everything else first in order to get into Ruby’s Story for Volume 6. I especially felt that I needed to do it this way with the Overall Story Beats for the Volume as how the plot progresses would be important in understanding what is going on with Ruby.
My favorite Topic for the Volume 6 Story Video is Qrow. This is mainly because I hadn’t talked about him at length like this before. My favorite bits I talked about in relation to Qrow is how Qrow kept his distance during the initial phases of the heist and how important it is that Ruby kept approaching Qrow while his spirits were down.
I don’t have any issues with how this video turned out. I believe I started writing this video in the middle of 2019, recorded my Audio for the Video in September, and finally released it in December of 2019.
Animation & Editing Video
I’m going to start this one off and say that I really need to come up with a new way to introduce these Videos talking about RWBY’s Animation. I started this Video the exact same way I did for the previous two I made on the Same Topics for Volumes 4 and 5. I don’t remember if I noticed this repetitive intro after writing, recording, editing, or releasing the Volume 6 Animation Video. I most likely noticed when editing the video.
Anyway, this is a video in which I got to do some cool stuff with. Got to breakdown Oscar’s Character Animation for the scene in which Jaune comes at Oscar, which I hadn’t analyzed and brokedown the animation in a dialogue scene before. Got to revisit the Topic of Squash and Stretch and highlight the use of a Smear Frame on Nora, which actually isn’t the first time they’ve done a Smear Frame like that. The bit I’m more proud of is my breakdown for the Animation and Action during the Fight between Yang and Adam.
I actually took notes this time around starting from Blake and Adam’s Fight on the Antenna and through the Woods up to the end of Yang’s Fight with Adam. Helped me identify all of the strengths for these Fight Scenes. Obviously, I focused on Yang and Adam’s Fight. The part of the breakdown for Adam and Yang’s Fight that I got a lot of positive responses to is my analysis and breakdown for Adam’s 3 Drawing Slashes against Yang, which was adapted from Monty’s Test Animation for a fight between Adam and Yang.
One of the things I took major umbrage with is how people would passive-aggressively dismiss the quality of the Fight between Yang and Adam by saying that it was only Good because of Monty. This being because it took moments from the Test Animation Monty did for a fight between Yang and Adam that leaked. So, I started this section of the video by highlighting Yang’s Animation since the Test Animation mainly focused on Adam. Doing this would show how much additional stuff was done in this Fight that didn’t come from that Leaked Test Animation Monty made.
One of the last topics for this Animation and Editing Video was a small bit in which I brought up the Special Effects Animation for Volume 6. This section was originally going to contain more, but as you will come to see, the Topic became much more complicated as I first pushed it into the next Design Video. A Video which would then become a 2 Parter because of how complicated covering the Topic truly became.
Design Part 1
This Design Video covered Topics that I usually cover in my previous Design Videos for RWBY (Characters, Environments, Grimm, Sound, etc.), but I went about covering them differently. This time around, I took the approach of presenting what went into producing what was seen in Volume 6 and not just talking about what I think about each Design Topic, which obviously bloated the length of the Video.
The section of this First Design Video for Volume 6 I’m very proud of is the section in which I went over the Conception, Influences, Initially Planning, and Implementation of The Apathy. How I approached writing this section was mainly influenced by the “Exploring” Series on the YouTube Channel GoodBadFlicks. This is also a section that I spent more time scoring (implementing music) than anything I had done previously. Another thing I did is purposely not show the Apathy until I actually started talking about them. This is a section I put a lot of thought and effort into how I wrote, spoke about, and edited. I would later upload this section as a Standalone Video while editing my Final Thoughts Video for Volume 6.
Design Part 2
The Design Part 2 Video covers the Special Effects and Visual Effects (VFX) of RWBY up to Volume 6 with brief mentions about Volumes 7 and 8. This is the first time I have ever spent so much time researching a subject and writing about it in a presentation/video essay type format. I kid-you-not, I spent months going through the Commentaries, watching the Behind the Scenes, looking over Crew Demo Reels, reading Articles, etc. in order to understand as much as I could about the Production of RWBY in relation to Special Effects and VFX. What was originally intended to be a small section to be included in the Animation & Editing Video quickly became more and more complicated as I continued to gain knowledge through my research.
Why did I even start researching these aspects of RWBY’s Production?
It started with the 2D Special Effect for the Fire in the Fireplace at the Brunswick Farm.
My first reaction was, “This is odd. I know they don’t do Fire Effects like this from what I saw in Volume 2 Episode 4, Volume 4 Episode 8, and Volume 5 Episode 10.”
But then I went, “Wait, do I actually KNOW that they don’t do Effects like this or am I just making a Baseless Assumption?”
I later messaged Hypeathon, who had done a 3 part video series on Monty and RWBY, and asked if he had any resources on the Special Effects for RWBY (I was only focused on the Special Effects at this time and was looking to get sources for the Volume 6 Animation Video). Hypeathon would then provide me much more than I expected and directed me to review the Commentaries.
As I mentioned earlier, I found myself traversing down a Rabbit Hole I wasn’t expecting. See all of my Notes and References used for the 2nd Design Video in the Google Doc linked below.
RWBY Special and VFX Sources, References, Notes, etc.
I would write this section with the original intention of including it with everything I was writing for the 1st Design Video; however, when it came time to review my initial draft for the section that would become the 2nd Design Video, I found myself not liking it.
I felt like it was directionless and uninteresting. It came off like I was just spouting information rather than presenting information. That’s when I messaged Hypeathon again and asked if he would be okay with proofreading and providing feedback on the First Main Draft of the Special Effects and VFX Section for my Original Volume 6 Design Video Script.
Hypeathon accepted.
So I provided him the Current Draft of my VFX Script and a Document with all of my Notes and References so he would know where information was coming from and have context to how I was writing this part of my script. Hype would give feedback, suggestions, alternations, and notes to the Draft I gave him as I continued to write the rest of the Original Design Video with consideration to everything Hype was providing me and giving feedback to.
As we were doing this, the page count on this Original Design Video’s Script ended up getting pretty high and about to hit 20 Pages. Why this was a big deal is because the previous Story and Animation Video Scripts were around 10 Pages and ended up to be about 30 Minutes each. I came to realize that I was about to have an Hour Long Video on my hands. Thus, I made the decision to split the Design Video into two parts.
This decision helped give Hypeathon more time to go over and provide feedback on the rest of the Special and VFX Draft I sent him and also gave me more time to finesse my scripts for the now 2 Part Volume 6 Design Videos.
If you would like to see the Original Draft of the Special and VFX Script I sent Hypeathon and the feedback and notes Hype provided to it, it is linked below.
(I DID ASK HYPEATHON IF HE IS OKAY WITH ME SHARING THIS HERE FIRST)
Special Effects of RWBY Draft (with Hypeathon’s Feedback)
I am overall proud of how the Volume 6 Design Part 2 Video turned out. The only thing I wished I did better on is the section of the Video talking about RWBY Volume 3.
When it came to my research I did for this Video, I was initially only focused on anything dealing with the Special Effects of RWBY. It wasn’t until I started researching Volume 4 that I pivoted to research not only the Special Effects but also the VFX and Production of RWBY as a whole.
Despite this change in approach to what topics I was going to be researching and covering for the Video, I never went back to Volume 3 and is why I said that the Special and VFX for Volume 3 had little change. This is also why the Volume 3 Section of the Design Part 2 Video covers mostly the Production of RWBY and not the Special and Visual Effects. That said, doing it this way did help provide a smoother transition to talking about Volumes 4 and 5.
Final Thoughts
Talk about another mile and a half. This Final Thoughts Video for Volume 6 took me a long while to write and edit. Part of it was all the stuff regarding Adam and the White Fang I had been planning to cover in this video, and another part was the Jaune and Pyrrha Section of the video.
I was originally writing the section regarding Adam’s Character as a sort of play by play about Adam, what we see of him, what others say about him, and what he says throughout each Volume. That was getting very long. I got to the point where I was writing in this way up to Volume 5 and went, “This is too long” and I didn’t feel like this is how I actually want to talk about Adam’s Characterization. I’m referring to the Tone of my writing. Thus, I consolidated it with a complete rewrite so that it would be better focused. Even with that done, I still faced hurdles when it came to writing those sections about Adam and the White Fang.
The number of times I thought about removing specific sections of the Adam and White Fang Topics to the point where there were times when I did remove them. This is all because I was super anxious about covering these topics as I am obviously going to be getting into and discussing the Racial Subject Matter and Implications regarding the character of Adam and representation of the White Fang.
Running through my mind when considering whether to keep these topics were:
Is my perspective important?
What if I’m ignorant?
What if I say something in this video that someone could take major offense to?
What if I say or present something in a way that makes someone who respected me now think less of me?
What if I make the conversation regarding these issues in RWBY Discourse worse?
Thoughts like these would just spring up from time to time during the writing and editing process. Yeah, I even considered cutting these parts out from the video during the editing phase after I had already recorded my audio for the video. This anxiety once I got up to the Adam’s Character Section of the video during the editing phase really kept me away from the video timeline and hindered me from making any significant progress on the full video. I think it took me 2 to 3 months to finally edit those sections of the video. It took me about a month to edit the first 20 minutes of the video.
The reason I kept these sections regarding Adam’s Character and the White in the video despite my anxiety about them is because I essentially forced myself to. “If I don’t talk about this now, then I am never going to.” That was my mentality with keeping these sections regarding Adam’s Character and White Fang in the video.
If I don’t do it now, then I never will.
Now, why would the Jaune and Pyrrha section of this Final Thoughts Video be hard for me to write and such? Well, that’s because that section was originally intended to be a Standalone Video. One that I hinted I was going to be making in my Update #14 Video that I put out on 11/7/18. I later confirmed that I was planning to make a video regarding Jaune and Pyrrha in my Update #16 Video that I put out on 9/1/19.
I started writing the script for the Standalone Jaune and Pyrrha Video, but all I was able to complete is a single paragraph. That video would only make sense with what was already out for RWBY at the time when I first hinted at it, which was Volume 6. That’s why the Topic for Jaune and Pyrrha got added to the Final Thoughts Video. It was also to address the scene in which Jaune talked to Nora and Ren at Pyrrha’s Statue.
When I finally got around to including that section about Jaune and Pyrrha in my script for the Final Thoughts Video, I was at least able to start making good progress. That was the case until I actually got to talking about Jaune in Volume 6 in which I hit a wall.
The problem was how I couldn’t think of what I wanted to say and how to say it. This was because I essentially looked at what I was writing so far regarding Jaune and Pyrrha and went, “Where am I going with this?” It was the last part of this section to write before concluding it, and I had lost the narrative.
I think it took me quite a while to figure it out. Rewatching the scene with Jaune, Nora, and Ren helped me to finally develop a connective through-line for what I wanted to cover and get across.
The only other major topic in the Final Thoughts Video I want to talk about here is the Bumblby Section. It was a topic I had originally planned to be in the Final Thoughts Video since around the time I started writing the first Story Video. I originally wrote it as though RWBY Volume 6 had just ended and was focusing on a specific aspect about the relationship.
Did they pander with Bumblby in Volume 6?
I had finished writing the full Final Thoughts Video around October or November of 2022. Volume 9 had not come out yet. By the time I finally got around to editing the Bumblby Section of the Video, Volume 9 had finished and Yang and Blake officially became a couple. I was playing back what I had said in the Video in my Video Editor and asked myself, “Does it even matter anymore?
The answer I came to was obviously, “No.
So I cut out all the parts where I referenced anything regarding fan-service and pandering. Re-recorded some of my lines to remove mentions of those as well. All so I could just focus on the 2 small problems I had with Blake and Yang’s Relationship, how it was presented in Volume 6, and then talked about how I wasn’t impressed with how it progressed afterwards in Volumes 7 and 8.
If I had to pick what my favorite section that I did for the Final Thoughts Video, it would be a toss up between these two.
Adam in Volume 6
Jaune and Pyrrha
The reason for the Volume 6 Adam Section is because of how it is an overview and analysis regarding Adam and his Character. It also gave me the opportunity to cover aspects about Blake’s confrontation with Adam at the end of Volume 5 that I didn’t get to cover in my original RWBY Volume 5 Thoughts Series due to how I needed to compress and focus my talking points regarding the last 4 episodes of that Volume.
My favorite bit I talked about regarding Adam in Volume 6 was the line in which Adam said to Blake how he just wasn’t good enough for her for Blake to then retort back that it was way more than that. I really liked digging into why Blake would respond back with that in regards to Adam.
The Jaune and Pyrrha Section should be obvious as Jaune is one of my Favorite Characters in RWBY. So, getting into stuff regarding Jaune and Pyrrha and explaining why I have interest in Characters like Jaune was really enjoyable.
If I was to put out one of these as a Standalone Video, it would be the Jaune and Pyrrha Section. It was originally intended to be one and covers more about the Characters than just one Volume.
Why Did These Videos Take So Long?
The title for this part of the write up speaks for itself. The answer is due to a variety of reasons.
Motivation
Energy
Time
Distractions
Procrastination
Anxiety
Just to name a few.
One of the big contributors as to why I took so long to make each of these Videos is because I would just end up in a Writer’s Block pretty frequently as I wrote the scripts for the Videos. I would just get stuck. I would know what topics I wanted to include and talk about. I would have these topics titled and listed out in my initial draft. But then, I would just struggle with figuring out what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it. I also struggled with the script writing process itself because of how I would just forget how to write. I cannot count how many times during the writing process for these Volume 6 Thoughts Videos that I would stop and ask myself,
Should I be starting a new paragraph?
Wait! When should a new paragraph be started?
Am I employing proper Grammar here?
Am I structuring my sentences properly?
I bet if you look over this whole write-up you are reading right now, you can find examples of me still struggling with stuff like that.
Another big contributor as to why it took me so long to get these videos out are the lengths of each video. Each video is 30 minutes or longer. Those are some daunting video lengths to produce.
I ended up developing a way to help myself not feel so overwhelmed by the length of each video by adding markers for each section/topic of the Video in the Video Editor’s Timeline and then moving these marked sections/topics far apart from each other in the Timeline. This is so I could just focus on the current section I am editing and not worry about how much more I have left to do in order to complete the video. Essentially, I broke down the video into sectioned tasks instead of just one large project. Despite that, I obviously still struggled to make progress when editing the Videos.
Another thing I would do to help me make progress when editing the videos is open my Vegas Project for whatever Thoughts Video I was working on at the time every time I started up my computer. However, I would also open other things such as YouTube, Social Media, etc. I would also spend time on my Phone reading through and watching the same stuff. I would just gravitate to whatever would be more interesting or immediately fulfilling for my mind to engage with.
One of the things that I do, which can be called a compulsion at times, is Day Dream whenever I’m listening to music. Not just Day Dream, but imagine and play out whole scenarios in my head to the music I’m listening to. This is how I develop the ideas for my Fan-Trailers, Toonami Promos, and Music Videos.
The reason this can be called a Compulsion is because sometimes my mind will just get stuck and locked into one thing, this one scenario. So, I have to grab my phone and start listening to music so I can play out what is currently running through my head until it’s done, but then like 30+ minutes have passed.
This can all be related to ADHD, which I have now started taking medication for after completing an ADHD Test that my Psychiatrist had me take. If you look through my Likes on Twitter, you can find me liking and retweeting stuff in regards to ADHD over the years because I just related them to my experience when editing these videos over the last 4 years.

Future Videos
I’m now 3 Volumes, 1 Spinoff, and a 2 Part Crossover Film behind in regards to my Thoughts Series of Videos for RWBY. Obviously, it now takes me too long to produce these videos. So, what am I going to do moving forward?
The Thoughts Video Series I’ve been making for each Volume of RWBY will be no more. One reason is the aforementioned time it now takes for me to write and produce them. The other reason is that my Format with these videos just won’t work with Volumes 7 through 9. Especially with the Story Videos as each of the Characters’ Stories are told through those Volumes and not isolated to just one.
Will I be making any videos talking about, discussing, analyzing, and criticizing RWBY?
YES
How am I going to do so if I’m not going to do it in my usual format anymore?
I will instead be producing Videos that are about a single topic rather than just a Broad Topic with a bunch of Individual Topics. This will make the Video focused and, hopefully, shorter. This will also be focused more on Topics that I want to talk about rather than Topics I’m not that interested in.
I already tested putting out Videos in that format by uploading sections of my previous Thoughts Videos for RWBY Volume 6, which are all linked below.
How RWBY Vol. 6 Put More Focus on Ruby (3:33)
Yang VS Adam - A Brief Animation BREAKDOWN (13:11)
The Apathy: Influences, Design, and Implementation (7:23)
A VERY GENERAL Overview of RWBY's VFX (12:56)
These also showcased the new Thumbnail and Video Title Formats I will be using when making Videos like this. I previously opted for just “Thoughts - : ” as I didn’t want my Titles to come off as Clickbait or anything like that.
The previous titles would communicate that these are my thoughts about this subject and will be talking about this sub-subject of the subject in the Video. The Title explains exactly what I’m doing in the video. Of course, this Title format is boring and doesn’t really prepare the person coming into the video with what to expect.
The New Video Title Formats I’m going to be doing, as seen in the Titles of the previous 4 videos I linked, are much more intriguing and attention grabbing. Each of these videos has already done better than the originals they came from in regards to Engagement (Likes and Comments).
I’m gonna be challenging myself over the next week to write, record, edit and upload a Video in this format. I will be discussing and going over a Scene from RWBY Volume 9. So, please look forward to it!
If you want to hear my early thoughts regarding Volumes 7 and 8, you can hear me talk about them on this Episode of the Dumb Weebs Podcast linked below.

On the eve of the 2024 season, I put together a list of Orioles prospects that could be intriguing. Not my top 10, not breakout picks, just guys I find interesting: four position players, six pitchers.
If you regularly consume prospect writing, there probably aren’t any new names here, but hopefully there are little nuggets you might not have seen before. I’m also not putting serious deep cuts in here. If they’re not on a major list, they’re not here. In that sense, this is more of a literature review than prospect evaluation.
Here’s how they rank across major publications. Ages are for the 2024 season.
Name Age MLB (T30) Baseball America (T30) ESPN (T32) Baseball Prospectus (T20) The Athletic (T20)
Dylan Beavers 22 8 11 8 12 7
Seth Johnson 25 11 10 12 11 16
Mac Horvath 22 12 17 25 10 11
Trace Bright 23 17 21 21
Jackson Baumeister 21 19 12 18 15 20
Justin Armbruester 25 21 29 20 18
Thomas Sosa 19 23 HM
Alex Pham 24 25 27 17
Kiefer Lord 22 29 20 12
Matthew Etzel 22 11 HM
Dylan Beavers, 22, OF
A little while ago, I took a quick look at 2023 MiLB batting data to see if any players stuck out, and Beavers was clearly at the top of the pile with a 133 wRC+ and a .60 B/KK. 2024 will be only his age 22 (read: 22.9) season, and he is expected to start in Bowie.
I think the central question with Beavers is, did he actually implement a swing change? According to Jon Meoli, Beavers has been putting in work to make mechanical adjustments. However, letting loose in-game is what facilitated a hot finish to the season, with a 150 wRC+ in 157 plate appearances in AA. Does letting loose mean he regressed, or does it mean his muscle memory has synthesized the changes?
If it’s the former, he could be in for a rude awakening if/when he gets to AAA. If it’s the latter, he can shed his tweener problem: defense not good enough to play center, bat not good enough to play in a corner.
Seth Johnson, 25, RHP
The mystery man, pitching only 10.1 innings when he returned from Tommy John Surgery last season. Based on commentary across Meoli, BP, Law, and MLB, we’re looking at a four pitch mix mostly led by a mid-90s fastball with solid carry and a mid-80s gyro slider. He also has a fringy curveball and emerging changeup, so you can guess where this is going: if his breaking ball feel comes back, then he can be a starter; if not, reliever.
He only had one TV-less, Statcast-less outing during spring training, but I try to remember that spring training is about the team warming up and identifying roster picks, not entertaining me as a pitching-starved rube. Johnson will probably start 2024 in Bowie, and depending on how things are going in the majors, they might pull the trigger on him sooner rather than later; fastball/slider is a cromulent combination for a reliever.
Seth Johnson only has around 200 lifetime innings as a converted shortstop. So even if he’s 25, there’s still some development to be had.
Mac Horvath, 22, IF/OF
Where in the world is Mac Horvath? Unlike some other 2023 draftees (Bradfield Junior, Etzel), he didn’t play in any spring training games, but he’s alive and well. Horvath impressed in a brief 2023, but it was only 87 plate appearances across A and A+ in his age 21 season.
BP thinks this is now a standard type of Baltimore draftee: damage on contact, in the air, with moldable swing decisions and positional flexibility. Keith Law has a similar assessment but notes Horvath also has questions about bat-to-ball ability.
Horvath played mostly second base in three org levels in 2023, with third base a close second, and outfield a distant third. Middle infield surplus value, yadda yadda yadda.
Trace Bright, 23, RHP
Trace Bright was unremarkable at Auburn, but his underlying stuff (Trackman spin and pitch shape, according to Meoli) was good enough to be worth $400,000 and the 137th overall pick in 2022. He has a mid-90s fastball with solid carry, a quality upper-70s curveball, a hard slider with cutter traits, and a trailing changeup. MLB Pipeline gives his fastball 55, curveball 60, and slidechange 45.
3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K 0 HR was his pitching line in the spring breakout game, a decent summary of his 2023. Bright struck out 35.0% (!) of batters in A+ and 28.2% in a brief stint in AA. Per Meoli, “To put that into context within the Orioles’ system in recent years, the only peers in terms of strikeout ability Bright has atop organizational leaderboards are Rodriguez and Hall, who have been the top pitching prospects since they were drafted in 2017 and 2018, respectively.”
The key lump is that he walked 13.2% of batters in A+ and 11.3% in AA. He had an underwhelming ERA in the early parts of last season, but Meoli attributes that to process over results (this is a good time to remind myself that the minors are ultimately developmental leagues for the best prospects). Without having seen Bright pitch, I don’t know if the walk problems are a legitimate control or a command problem. He walked a lot of guys in college, so more likely the former.
Jackson Baumeister, 21, RHP
Jackson Baumeister pitched to a 5.23 ERA at Florida State, but he appears to be the moldable type of pitching prospect that makes for easy dreaming. He has a classical pitching body at 6-foot-4 and 224 pounds, impressive raw stuff, and a relatively short pitching record (high school catcher).
Low-mid-90s fastball with solid carry (how many times can I write this?), three non-fastballs that follow: a curveball, cutter-like slider, and a changeup. He also had some trouble with walks in college, as well.
[At this point, I stopped and asked myself - are the Orioles going after the same type, or are prospect writers getting lazy with how they describe pitch mixes and flaws? Probably the first one.]
Eric Longenhagen thinks Baumeister could reasonably make his 2025 top 100: ”Tredwell (UCLA) and [Baumeister] (Florida State) were second round picks with vertically oriented fastball/breaking ball combos. Neither developed exceptional velocity in college, but they could break out if they do so as pros.”
Baumeister is another test to see how well the Orioles pitching lab can work the simple but critical problem: if given raw stuff, can you develop pitches, command, and control? It is not a linear problem.
Justin Armbruester, 25, RHP
I first heard of Justin Armbruester two years ago when he struck out Giancarlo Stanton twice during a AA rehab stint. It’s a short video, just the putaway pitches: a high fastball and a breaking ball down and away.
Two years later, Armbruester is not the most heralded pitcher in our system, but he is compelling because other than Chayce McDermott, he’s probably the closest to making his MLB debut. The stuff and command/control won’t blow you away, and at 25 and nearly 600 innings, the concrete is set, but he did strike out 10.01 per 9 innings in AAA in 2023.
Expect Armbruester to be called up in 2024 if nothing else than to soak up innings. It’s a five pitch mix: low-mid-90s fastball with carry, decent cutter, sweeping slider, curveball, and a changeup he temporarily ditched in 2023 and plans to bring back in 2024, per MLB Pipeline. He also has a funky delivery where he hides the ball (think Yusei Kikuchi).
Thomas Sosa, 19, OF
Thomas Sosa is the lone international free agent to make this list, and it’s because Baseball America put out an article about seeking quality exit velocity data at the complex level.
Sosa sports a 104.3 mph 90th percentile EV and a 110 mph max EV; the latter would have landed him in the top 50 of qualified outfielders last year. The ~104 mph 90th EV lands him a present 50 grade according to this BA primer.
MLB Pipeline calls him a “natural center fielder.” I have no idea what that means, but one of my running concerns is that if Cedric Mullins breaks down and Bradfield Junior doesn’t develop any power, then we don’t have a true solution for center field.
Alex Pham, 24, RHP
“Kind of a funny exercise in the meta - from a couple pitches, it looks like Pham has solid carry thanks to the over-the-top delivery (same reason why he has that looping curveball). But since he's only 5'11", I wouldn't be surprised if he also plays into VAA.”
Despite the height difference, a profile not unlike Armbruester’s. Another five pitch guy (fastball, slider, cutter, curveball, changeup) with an over-the-top slot. From the one spring training relief outing I saw, the slider looks more gyro than Armbruester’s sweeper.
The riding fastball and rainbow curveball are delightful to watch, I’m just not sure if this can really play deep into the upper minors and then majors. If he gets the promotion to AAA and can hold his ground, maybe we’ll see him in MLB soon.
Kiefer Lord, 22, RHP
A sneaky 65-grade name, Kiefer Lord was number 12 on Keith Law’s list by sheer upside: high spin rates on his fastball, slider, and curveball, with a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and has touched 99 (!).
Law has gushed about him:
”If for pure stuff, he belonged in the first round," Law said. "He's had no track record. He had one year pitching in Division I and the year did not end well because it was the most he's pitched in his life, especially pitching at this kind of velocity.
"I'm all in on that one. He was a top-100 guy for me. This is the type of player you bet on. For the Orioles to get him with their fourth-overall pick seems like tremendous value, and he's the guy of all player's in this draft that I'll be watching the most because I'll be rooting for him. How could you not root for a guy who had this story?"
From Jake Rill, “In his lone year with the Huskies in 2023, Lord pitched to a 6.19 ERA over 15 starts. However, that number was inflated due to a tough conclusion to his season. Through his first 11 outings, he had a 3.63 ERA. And he still finished with 78 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings for the year, which allowed him to earn All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors.”
There’s not a lot of data on him being a starter, as he pitched 91 innings in Division III from 2021-2022, and then around 75 in 2023 in the Pac-12 (RIP). With that kind of track record, it’s glass half full or half empty like with Baumeister and Seth Johnson - you have durability questions, but also projectability and upside.
Matthew Etzel, 22, CF
If you’re a BB/K guy (age adjustment be damned), Etzel’s 21/23 in 124 plate appearances across FCL/A/A+ in 2023 might raise your eyebrows. Etzel showed up on two lists: #11 (!) by Kiley McDaniel, and an honorable mention by Law. He’s an outlier among the list, but it’s not hard to imagine why: Law has him as a 70 runner, and if he’s capable in center (see above re: Sosa, Mullins, Bradfield Junior), he has a lot of margin for error with the bat. This is a similar forecast for Bradfield Junior, except EBJ is an 80 runner. Etzel went .323/.455/.510 with 21 stolen bases in 2023, although 25 of 30 games were played in either rookie ball or single-A. Like Beavers and Horvath, Etzel will be 22 during the 2024 season.
This is purely lit review, as I have no underlying data on him, and the only time I’ve “watched” him play was listening to him on the radio strike out on three pitches on March 23.
It’s also hopium because of the aforementioned center fielder anxiety.
Honorable Mention
You Already Know: Luis De León (21, LHP), Jud Fabian (23, OF)
Lefty Luis De León is frequently cited as a breakout candidate for 2024, and I couldn’t write anything about Jud Fabian that didn’t start and end with his 37.5% strikeout rate in AA. Crazy power, though.
Young IFAs: Braylin Tavera (19, OF), Leandro Arias (19, IF), Luis Almeyda (18, IF), Joshua Liranzo (17, 3B), Stiven Martinez (16, OF), Emilio Sanchez (17, SS), Jordan Sánchez (18?, OF)
The first four of these have appeared on many top 20/30 lists, I just haven’t watched any of them or consumed any reporting. The fact that they’re all recently signed complex or summer league IFAs, mostly shortstop or outfield, means they haven’t had much of a chance to distinguish themselves. Once they make some noise in Delmarva (à la De León), I’m sure I’ll change my tune.
Mystery Men: Aneudis Mordán (20, C/1B), Elio Prado (22, OF), Edgar Portes (21, RHP), Yaqui Rivera (20, RHP), Riley Cooper (22, LHP)
Taking it back to this thread, I call them mystery men because I haven’t read any scouting reports or seen any film, so I’m going based on the underlying numbers and finding guys who aren’t overaged.
Another 65-grade name, Aneudis Mordán is a shadow, a mere whisper on the wind, and I hope he stays at catcher because his 137 wRC+ (mostly in rookie ball, to be fair) would be sweet. Elio Prado is older and presumed a corner outfielder until I see a report that says he can stick in center, but his 2023 walk and strikeout rates of 10.0% and 18.8% make me think there’s hope for his contact ability and plate discipline. Not much power, though: only .155 ISO.
Edgar Portes and Yaqui Rivera are fine for their age and struck out about 30% of batters, although Portes walked around 10%, Rivera 15%. In 2023, they only pitched 84.1 and 50.0 innings, respectively, so I don’t have supremely high hopes, just trying to find some guys who weren’t on lists but have decent data.
I threw in former-LSU reliever and not the racist Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper, who allegedly sat 93 from the left last season. If he gets to 95-96, then we can talk. Cooper was the lone lefty pitcher the Orioles drafted in 2023.
