I went on a walk earlier today and was having a conversation that turned to the facets of success that the Zen tradition has over, well, everyone else. Here's me putting some organization to aspects of the conversation that we touched upon.
The earliest records of Zen conversation aka. Dharma combat aka. koans aka public cases we have come from Dunhuang and involve an heir to Bodhidharma named "Yuan" which places them sometime around the middle of the 6th century. Here's an excerpt:
Following the desolation and plunder wrought on by the Mongol invasion, the restrictive religious policies imposed by the Buddhists, and the subsequent rise of milleniarian cults with their own quasi-theocratic social agenda, the Zen conversation starts to fade in China.
We have records in China extending to around 1400. The aptly named translation by Cleary entitled "Zen Under the Gun" is evidence of this. The following is an excerpt from a Zen Master that came from Korea to study under a Chinese Zen Master and would carry on the tradition of preaching the Zen dharma to Emperor's.

This number is not an exageration or hyperbole, but a reasonable approximation of the longevity of the Zen conversation.The earliest records of Zen conversation aka. Some of these texts come from the conversations that dedicated record-keepers transcribed or unnamed Preceptors copied down and were later compiled. These records of Zen conversation were themselves annotated and conversed with by Zen Masters in subsequent generations thereby producing monumental books of instruction and practical guidance like Wansong's Book of Serenity, Wumen's Gateless Checkpoint, or Linquan's Empty Valley Collection.

Unlike the phony kind of "work" of repeating religious apologetics, playing dress-up, or saying a few words over corpses that Priests while charging money from the faithful day-in, day-out--everyone in the Zen communities labored alongside everyone else and Zen Masters made a point of it to not exempt themselves from that.The famous "No work, no eat" comes from Baizhang. It's nothing revolutionary in the context of Zen, but it sets the world on fire for just about everybody else.
Baizhang, the Chinese Zen master, used to labor with his pupils even at the age of eighty, trimming the gardens, cleaning the grounds, and pruning the trees. The pupils felt sorry to see the old teacher working so hard, but they knew he would not listen to their advice to stop, so they hid away his tools.
That day the master did not eat. The next day he did not eat, nor the next. "He may be angry because we have hidden his tools," the pupils surmised. "We had better put them back."
The day they did, the teacher worked and ate the same as before. In the evening he instructed them: "No work, no food."
1000 Years of Stability
As an undercurrent to the Zen conversation are certain...lifestyle choices...that everyone has to observe before they can meaningfully participate. They're choices that everyone already recognizes are necessary in certain contexts and lifestyles that are overwhelmingly associated with healthy outcomes in those observing them consistently. The undercurrent to conversation in Zen is known as the "Lay" Precepts.Lay Precepts:
- No lying
- No stealing
- No murder
- No abuse of sex.
- No intoxicating.
In their tradition, observing these kept the conversation flowing for a thousand years.

I am writing up my PhD at the moment so I will be leaving this toxic cesspit soon, but god fucking damn, I've had it.
I'm part of a huge collaboration with another university. While the work should be equally split in theory, they have 3 people working on it while I am completely on my own. This means that any work we agree on is done much faster by them as they simply have more people to work with. I however started sooner with getting the project along, meaning I have more actual data samples than them. We agreed to share them as it is beneficial for our research. While I have been sharing mine consistently, I still have to see the majority of theirs even though I keep asking for them every few months or so (we agreed upon generating a set number of samples each before the project took off). My PI doesn't really care about the whole situation 'because we have to keep good relations with them'. Note that I needed that data to finish writing down my PhD, and I actually had to repivot that part because they kept delaying their promise to give over their data, past the last feasible deadline for me.
So in February 2023 I pitched an original idea to our group of four dedicated researchers via Discord. I asked them if they could research it further because I didn't have the time to do so and this as part of the larger project we are collaborating on. Not one of them responded to my message, even though we are working with patient data and me mentioning that if the idea turned out to be solid it would help our patients tremendously. This idea was quite revolutionary in the field, it hasn't been done at all and requires quite some (patient) samples to conduct. I had a good clue it would work beforehand because it is based on an existing technique yet with another data type. The only reason it hasn't been done before is (I think) because nobody had this kind of sample cohort that we built. The only reason they had those resources to conduct this research in the first place is because I shared so many of mine.
So queue today where I see a fucking Nature paper by their hand on the exact same idea I pitched to them. On the exact same fucking samples I shared with them. My name on the paper or even god forbid, in the acknowledgements? Nowhere to be seen. Not even my fucking PI is mentioned anywhere, while the grant that funded this research is in his name. The grant number is even mentioned in the paper. Meanwhile I have been including every single one of them in any paper of mine, even though they contributed literally nothing because again my PI asked for them to be included 'to keep our good relations' and 'they are still part of the larger collaboration'.
I also know for a fact that they didn't come up with this idea independently on their own and simultaneously with me. This because one of them mentioned to me once (in person), a short bit after I pitched the original idea, that they were impressed I came up with it and that their PI said there was a good chance it would work and how revolutionary it would be to be the first people ever to do so. But nothing after it, just dead silence. I thought they dropped it because they didn't get it to work. And now this. It was also around that time they started stalling their data sharing, which I think is because they just stopped all work on the actual project and instead focused on getting this research out. Even if they did come up with it completely on their own (which I highly, highly doubt), it is still a complete affront to not even include the name of my PI because he basically funded over 75% of that paper.
I am not even sure what I am more mad about. The fact they stole my idea or the fact that I have a huge cohort of patients lying around who didn't get the quality of care they so much deserve because some asshats decided playing political games was way more important. Because you don't think they actually shared any of the outcomes of that paper with us?

[Just a disclaimer, I cuss a lot. I'm very angry as I'm writing this post.]
Hi, I'm back here again, hope you guys are well. I'm really not.
I'm extremely stressed, disheartened, betrayed, upset annoyed angry etc. you name it.
I got into a heated argument with my dad today. I really care about my dad and he's, generally speaking, been supportive of me whenever I take life decisions that make him and my mum happy. I understand that I have limited choices and need to make the right decisions given how we are first generation immigrants in a first world country, and only my dad financially supports our family. So having a stable job is really important, yada yada, yes I do whatever my parents pull out of their ass all the time even if I don't want to because they know best and only want me to be happy and successful.
Anyway, the marriage market for a 22F South Asian like me "sucks" at the moment according to them. Not many sons from good traditional families exist around my area. So my dad has used his classical manipulation techniques that he is old, sick (both of those things are true, gotta give him that) and he has the heavy burden of getting his daughter married into a good family. So he picked my fucking cousin back home. He is from a good family and we can trust them yada yada, our family knows them, their family knows us (DUH that's your fucking sister's family, of course you know them) and we can trust their son ( I have barely known him personally. He lives in a different country and I rarely visit back home. And the idea of marrying my cousin is fucking disgusting to me. I don't even like him and never will).
Mind you, that's the cousin my parents told me not to worry about...matter of fact I've made it very clear to them that when it's time to decide for my marriage, I only have one fucking condition and that is .... I DON'T WANNA MARRY MY FUCKING COUSINS :D (the bar is very low, I know. I don't even want to get married wtf I'm only 22 and have 0 interest in marriage or guys in general wtf)
My parents don't wanna put in the effort of finding someone else, and they hear these stories about guys in my area having kids outside of wedlock and then running away or hiding their kid or babymama. Or that guys that cannot be trusted here since substance abuse is very common here. Not many educated guys exist (load of bullshit, they do, my parents just have 0 social skills and would rather speak with someone they know). My dad has particularly used religion to justify that cousin marriage is fine. Well guess what, my religion says that if I say no, then it means no and nothing can happen. So my dad said, I only have the best interest in my mind and you should listen to me and you won't regret it. We just went back and forth with that argument and ended on a very angry note. Now we're ignoring each other and it's just fucking killing me. I don't want this to happen to me, and my dad has made up his mind and is gonna go through with it. I can only hope that fuckass cousin doesn't see this as an opportunity to leave that shitty third world country and come here. Fuckin hell what do I fucking do. How do I convince them?

Good evening y'all (it's 11 pm EST)
I'm currently a college student pursuing an IT degree and I was speaking with my father in law about an idea for a writing skills development program. The basis of the program/website is to teach students from Elementary school to the highschool and collegiate level on how to write essays. He posits that his students he has worked with do not have a good grasp on how to format their essays and papers, which then falls short in their future academic courses and he wants to make a program that will help them step by step.
My general layout right now is that it will be split into different levels of writing. From Levels 1 through 5: Elementary, Middle School, High School, College Prep, and Collegiate level writing skills. Within each level, I'll have writing tips and exercises to help the students learn the proper way to write their essays, with the Five Paragraph Essay as the format they will be learning.
Level 1: Sentence Structure, Formatting, and Composition. This includes things like spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc.
Level 2: Adding in proper grammar, sentence continuation, paragraph structure, readability and comprehension, editing skills (rereading to make sure it is grammatically correct, has proper punctuation, sounds academically thought out, etc). We'll introduce how to write and connect multiple paragraphs as well as intro, body, and conclusion.
Level 3: Here we'll reinforce sentence structure for Intro, body, and conclusion paragraphs as well as citation and source material research. We'll start on how to properly write a Five paragraph essay with the hourglass/pyramid format (Broad introduction that gets more specific when it gets to the thesis sentence, body paragraphs with point evidence and example sentences, and then specific reintroduction of main points to a broad conclusion of the thesis). [I may have this in the Middle school Level 2 section as this is something I learned in middle school] We will also introduce different types of essays such as Argumentative, Systhesis, Compare and Contrast, Narrative, Persuasive, etc.
Level 4: In this level we will introduce the importance of rough draft, revise and polish, editing and formatting, and college entrance essays and college application questions. This section will mostly be open to Junior (11th) and Senior (12th) grade students who are preparing for their academic life outside of Highschool. We will also be introducing how to write cover letters, resumes, and exploring the other side of life outside of High school.
Level 5: Collegiate level writing will focus on precision writing, using the fewest words necessary to accurately convey an idea. Objectivity, using accurate, clear and relevant information. Logical Structure, using precise word choice and structure. Researching, Formatting, time management, and consistence and conciseness. We will also go back to resume and cover letter writing for those who are looking for a career after a degree. We will be adding a section to help students with term paper writing as well as advancement (Masters and Doctorate level) writing.
I wanted to reach out to former, current, and aspiring English Teachers to ask for feedback on this idea. Is this something that you would use in your class as a teaching tool for your students? What can be done for this to be implemented in your classes if this website/program gets published? What things should be added, removed, improved, or changed in the current idea to make it go alongside the current English course curriculum in your school district? What else should be included to facilitate user interaction with this website?
Please give me as much feedback as you can think of, whether that is directly on this post or in a direct message. My hope and goal is to be able to develop the future generation and to move away from using AI as a writing tool because it takes away the practical skills that is severely lacking in some, if not most, of the students today.

Level 2: Adding in proper grammar, sentence continuation, paragraph structure, readability and comprehension, editing skills (rereading to make sure it is grammatically correct, has proper punctuation, sounds academically thought out, etc). We'll introduce how to write and connect multiple paragraphs as well as intro, body, and conclusion.
Level 3: Here we'll reinforce sentence structure for Intro, body, and conclusion paragraphs as well as citation and source material research. We'll start on how to properly write a Five paragraph essay with the hourglass/pyramid format (Broad introduction that gets more specific when it gets to the thesis sentence, body paragraphs with point evidence and example sentences, and then specific reintroduction of main points to a broad conclusion of the thesis). [I may have this in the Middle school Level 2 section as this is something I learned in middle school] We will also introduce different types of essays such as Argumentative, Systhesis, Compare and Contrast, Narrative, Persuasive, etc.
Level 4: In this level we will introduce the importance of rough draft, revise and polish, editing and formatting, and college entrance essays and college application questions. This section will mostly be open to Junior (11th) and Senior (12th) grade students who are preparing for their academic life outside of Highschool. We will also be introducing how to write cover letters, resumes, and exploring the other side of life outside of High school.
Level 5: Collegiate level writing will focus on precision writing, using the fewest words necessary to accurately convey an idea. Objectivity, using accurate, clear and relevant information. Logical Structure, using precise word choice and structure. Researching, Formatting, time management, and consistence and conciseness. We will also go back to resume and cover letter writing for those who are looking for a career after a degree. We will be adding a section to help students with term paper writing as well as advancement (Masters and Doctorate level) writing.
I wanted to reach out to former, current, and aspiring English Teachers to ask for feedback on this idea. Is this something that you would use in your class as a teaching tool for your students? What can be done for this to be implemented in your classes if this website/program gets published? What things should be added, removed, improved, or changed in the current idea to make it go alongside the current English course curriculum in your school district? What else should be included to facilitate user interaction with this website?

My approach to the supplement forms for both schools:
UVic BSW - As for the UVic personal statement, I mostly focused on speaking about my heart to advocate for equity, and not necessarily about intersectionality. Though I still indirectly said something about my social position (saying I am a heterosexual cis-male, healthy, etc) based on a very confidential case where I assisted someone experiencing a crisis and needed immediate assistance for their safety.
As for the work/volunteer experience portion, I kind of discussed how my first social service experience led to B, then C, which eventually helped me perform better at D, blablabla... just like that. Like, for instance, at my practicum the Senior Caseworker taught me how to conduct casework with each client and I've explained how that casework experience later helped me at my actual paid social service job later on which was actually true.
UBC BSW - As for the UBC personal statement, I narrated my personal stories of being an immigrant who came to Canada (Victoria BC originally) as a Grade 8 student without family or family friends, etc and how that led to wanting to help people as a Social Worker. I did talk about my strengths which are immigrant experiences, compassion and cultural sensitivity and on the other hand, as for my limitations, I had to think from an intersectionality perspective and discussed on how my privileges as a young healthy man might be a barrier to understand people who are socially disadvantaged than I am.
As for the work/volunteer experience portion, I did focus more on the combined 500+ hour volunteer and practicum experience over my 6000+ work experience since the volunteer experience portion seemed to be more detailed than work experience with UBC's. I still kind of followed the same format as I did with my UVic work/volunteer experience portion. However, I referred to my job description in my job offer to write about my work experience in the UBC application.

Please keep in mind that I was probably quite advantaged in my application compared to some other BSW applicants due to the fact that I had lots of worked/volunteepracticum experience of total 6500+ hours and that I am a racial minority, also a 1st generation immigrant from overseas who moved to Canada and has lived in 3 different Canadian cities (Victoria, Toronto and Vancouver) by himself since the age of 14. Average GPA in the last 10 1st and 2nd year university courses including the 2nd year Intro Social Work courses were probably at least 3.60/4.33 ish.
If you're looking to apply to these schools in the next years, I hope this might be helpful in the slightest with your supplementary applications.

The Asian market isn't so much the problem, it's the en mass production of said materials, "recycled", "faux", and low quality plastics that are being used in their vehicles. A lot of people have said "this is the trend" and where all mass marketed cars are heading. But I think Mini's decision to partner with Great Wall Motors and produce the car out of China has a huge impact on their intention to go straight-to-market, cost cutting, streamlined parts, and therefore (in my opinion) loss of quality, and diminished/minimalist styling and impact on general design.
For example, I've said this in other places, but Great Wall Motor's 2023 Ora EV is a near clone of the Mini Cooper EV of which is made out of the same factory as the Ora. This partnership started in late 2017, early 2018 and didn't just happen yesterday. If you see the URL's below of the Ora you can see that they're pretty much clones, the round headlines, "unique" colorful interior, faux leather, low quality plastics, and minimalist approach.
Sorry for the length of this, but I'd love a friendly discussion about the above because it seems to be that BMW/Mini along with GWM are really just trying to gain as many customers as they can while doing it from a straight-to-market, cost-cutting designs, while largely impacting the former prestige and "luxury" feel our beloved Minis once had. My resume says Museum Educator but I am applying more for assistant director type roles. I was recently awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for $2,200. It is to attend a summer institute about Asian American and Pacific Islander Histories, 1870 to the Present. How or rather where do I add something like this? I received a similar grant in 2016. I received a $100 grant this school year to buy supplies. Should I add that? Normally, I wouldn't bother, however the positions I am interested in want to see grant writing experience. I met with a career coach recently. She told me that I have a lot of varied experience that she thinks should be marketable. She cautioned me against pursuing another degree without a plan in place. I do agree with her there. The museum field is incredibly competitive, and I almost don't know if I should bother. I really don't know if it is worth paying her $1,000 to write a resume or to do 5 sessions which would include resume feedback and how to. If I do one, it will be the latter. And the best part is, this isn't the first time this has happened. In the over 8 years I've been a Coinbase customer I've had transactions randomly delayed and/or put on hold more times than I can count - despite being told over and over that I am a high-value client. And what has now happened to me yesterday has happened before - except before, the probaly 4-5 hours I spent on the phone with customer service ended in a solution. This time, the literally 10+ hours I spent online yesterday in live chat resulted in nothing but "sorry, nothing we can do."
I ask if I can relink/verify manually, using the old two-deposit method. I am told no, I have to go through Plaid. Plaid will not, under any set of circumstances, stop telling me "insufficient sharing permission" even though 100% of everything about the account is in accordance with what they require.
I am told that "higher levels" could do it manually. Then after at least 2 hours of waiting for that to happen, am told they cannot do so because Plaid won't let them. So HOW is that doing so "manually?"
Not doable through Plaid, not allowed to do so manually, and not in possession of a random number of multiple bank accounts because I am a normal person, now the result of this is that I have NO bank account linked or linkable to my Coinbase account.
Not only am I unable to deposit funds to trade, I am also completely unable to link an account in order to withdraw MY OWN LEGALLY ACQUIRED AND OWNED ASSETS AND CASH. Forever, apparently. Because no solution is offered by Coinbase other than going through Plaid. Which cannot, and will not, give me any result other than "insufficient sharing permission" no matter how much objective proof has been furnished that every single thing they require has (and always has) been done/selected.
And the best part is, this isn't the first time. When Jesus entered the justice system of men, He did so, knowing it would cost His life on earth. (1 Corinthians 4:5, Matthew 16:24-26, Isaiah 53) His sacrifice and example show us how to break free from the system of sin and death. (Luke 9:22-27) Jesus lived out the logic of God and proved it was good when He overcame death. (John 11:25, Genesis 5:24, 2 Kings 2:9-11, Mark 16:6)
This is the good logic that will make us fit for eternity. It is God's prayer - what He asks of us.
Listen, you who rule with God (Shema, Yisrael) (Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Mark 12:29-31)
The Lord our God, the Lord is One. (God is not divided by death-bringing logic. This truth is what makes God eternal Numbers 23:19)
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind. (be united with His logic and become eternal John 8:32, John 17:21-26)
And love your neighbor as yourself (treat the body of others as you do your own body. Leviticus 19:18, Ephesians 5:28-30, Deuteronomy 15:7-11, Proverbs 19:17)
Today, if you hear His voice, follow it into a new life with Him. He loves you. He gave up everything to have you with Him forever. There is no better time to separate from death than right now.

I. Memoirs of a Neurotic Fan
Hoo boy.
It’s been a long four years since Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) released, and I don’t think I have ever before devoted so much emotional energy to deciphering how I truly feel about a piece of media. Initially, I enjoyed my return to a reimagined world of lovable characters, but unfavorable writing choices and a mind-boggling finale left me feeling torn. Despite striving to maintain an optimistic outlook at the end of my previous essay, my perspective on the game only darkened as the years wore on. Developer interviews constantly oscillated back and forth as to whether they would remain faithful to the original FF7 (1997), or, as the ending of Remake indicated, strike out on a brand new “unknown journey.” That’s not to mention the downright radioactive discourse among fans, combined with the litany of harassing messages I received for the most tepid criticisms.
Eventually, I grew to despise Remake. The positive emotions and ecstatic love I had for parts of the game sunk beneath my waves of ire toward its creative divergences – as well as what they represented to me. And I fed that hate. I hated its ponderous navel-gazing about the nature of adaptations. I hated its self-congratulatory insinuation that asinine story decisions like the “Baby’s-First-Metacommentary” Whispers and the resurrection of multiple deceased characters somehow constituted “bold” storytelling. I hated the uncritical portion of certain audiences that fell for this illusion of transgressive storytelling, all the while embracing a game that went out of its way to barrage the player with fanservice and puerile pandering. I hated the frequent argumentation that “it’s not a remake, it’s a sequel” was somehow seen as a mitigating factor, when it actually further aggravated my problems with it. I hated Remake’s emphasis on novelty, its subversion without meaning, its arrogant alienation of new audiences that wanted to experience a classic story, and its implicitly cynical view on thousands of years of storytelling tradition for the sake of “surprise.” To quote director Naoki Hamaguchi:
“When you try to remake a game and make it an entertaining game, having the exact storyline as the original would lack the excitement and surprise. I was looking for an essence to add to the story, and Zack was chosen to be this essence because in the original, there wasn’t much story about Zack, but in Crisis Core, he had a huge character development.”
But that lonely ember of hope persisted; after all, I had loved Remake at one point. I hated that stubborn attachment most of all. By the time Rebirth was fully unveiled, I wanted only one thing from it: to repulse me to my core, to be something so egregiously offensive to my sensibilities that I could never associate the project with anything positive again. “Perhaps if things get stupid enough,” I thought, “others will also see the emperor’s nakedness.” Pain and despair morphed into objects of desire for me. They were my keys to escaping these contradictory feelings of love and hate.
As you can see, I am quite well-adjusted and able to engage with art in a healthy way.
