2024.05.14 16:00 Quiet_Web4905 Test Results Help

In trying to wrap my head around the results of the blood and urine test of my 12+ year old cat. The vet has said she's CKD stage two and should now go on a strict renal diet. I don't know how well she's going to go with that and also she's tiny (2.5kg) so I'm quiet worried about the protein restriction that's going to bring.
I'm trying to learn about it as fast as I can and in reading I saw that sometimes it's not enough that creatine levels are high and that the first urine test can be non conclusive for a full diagnosis. My vets been so helpful talking me through the results but I've already bombarded her with questions so was hoping people here could help me.
Her urinalysis results: Laboratory: Type: Test: Results: Leuk- 3+ Nitrate- 5 Protein- 1+ Glucose- norm Ketones- neg Urobilinogen- norm Biliruben- neg Blood- 4+ SG- 1.018 Gross appearance - pale yellow, floating debris - appears to be fabric/lint Sediment: Wet prep - no crystals, no cells, lots of debris Stained slide - no bacteria, no blood cells.

Can someone tell me also how to simplify the values when I'm describing it in future for Reddit questions. What would I say her uspg number is, her creatine, SDMA and BUN is described in the way people here are using please?
I've got other questions I'd like to ask about her treatment plan, such as if there are things to try before going fully in to the science diets because I know how much that is going to change her life upside down and I'm a bit worried about some of the things I've read about using them when in the early stages due to the possible reduction in protein doing damage to the kidneys. If it seems safe I'd would like more time if possible to try her on other things first to see if her levels can at all be brought down. (Without wasting any time if there seems no time to spare. Whatever is best for her to help her as much as possible).
I'm also a bit confused about the food plan as from what I'm reading it's to reduce her protein and phosphorous which don't seem to be at elevated levels right now?

2024.05.13 18:14 UnusualConcept2023 Please can you offer me some advice?

Hi.
I've had dry eye for a few years now and until about 2 weeks ago I hadn't really taken it seriously. I foolishly allowed my symptoms to become bothersome until they were starting to make me uncomfortable. I endured many months of itching, burning and stinging. 2-3 weeks ago I started experiencing tears streaming from my eyes and I noticed that I was more sensitive to sunlight (something that only occurred very occasionally in the past gradually became a regular occurrence).
In the past two weeks or more I've been using daily eyelid wipes (optase tea tree oil), preservative free artificial tears 3-4 times a day ('Hylo-Forte' which are 0.2% sodium hyaluronate) and heated eye masks/gel packs. I've noticed a significant improvement in some of my symptoms - there is now very little itching/burning/soreness, but I'm still experiencing sporadic photophobia, which can be a nuisance (I wear a baseball cap and occasionally sunglasses to help with this).
I have some questions and I hope that people on here will be able to help:
1) I have a history of GERD/LPR and chronic sinusitis. I have chronic inflammation. Could not treating these conditions adequately be impacting my dry eye symptoms? Do you think it's possible that systemic inflammation can have a significant impact on symptoms?
2) Should I continue the same routine long term or should I take breaks? Is it safe to use the heated eye masks daily for years? If so, is it normal for one's eye to be blurry after using it, or is this a sign of the cornea being warped? How hot should the mask be and for how long should one apply it?
3) Is the reduction in symptoms likely to be attributed to the combination of the heat pack, wipes and tears, or is there one of these things that is likely helping more than the others?
4) I regularly sit in a dark room without the curtains open. I don't get exposed to a lot of natural sunlight until I go outside. Could this be impacting my symptoms? I also sit in front of the computer a lot, so I imagine that making sure I blink more is essential?
5) Does a lack of sleep/sinus issues affect your dry eye?
6) Would you recommend putting an ointment in just before bed? If so, are these ointments safe to use long term? There is a preservative free, OTC product here in the UK that contains white soft paraffin and liquid paraffin. Do you think this will be safe to apply long term or should I take breaks occasionally?
7) When should I ask my optometrist to refer me to an Ophthalmologist on the NHS? He will be happy to refer me if I ask him to but I don't want to be referred unnecessarily. I would like to try self care measures first.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
All the best.

2024.05.13 14:37 mmariee_ ial chemistry unit 2 the q's I remember

I questioned my life writing these but here you go, open for any discussion or faults:
The catalyst thingt coated via silicon dioxide was phosphoric acid ig ( for reaction of h2o and ethene) (1 mark)
As advantage I said higher volumes of water favours forward reaction that the equilibrium shifts to right increasing the ethanol produced while the disadvantage is that the concentration of ethene decreases due to dilution and so the frequency of collisions with the catalyst decrease, thus the rate decreases as well. (2 marks)
There was a previous part said the ethanol yield was 95% and asked what was done to obtain it. I said the ethanol produced was removed from the equilibrium or unreacted reactants were recycled. (2 marks)
It was a compromise as it was high enough to keep the rate high (high kinetic energy of particles) and was low enough to avoid the equilibrium shifting to left. At higher temperatures the shift would be towards left as the reverse reaction was endothermic. (2 marks)
A high pressure may be suggested because it would increase the rate and also would shift the equilibrium to right since there was lower number of moles of gaseous molecules. (2 marks)
I said the sticky substance was silicon not sure at all lmao (1 mark)
High pressures have high energy costs. (1 mark)
About the ClO2 bond thingy I made a double bond with one of the oxygen molecules and a dative covalent for the other oxygen that the chlorine atom has 1 lone pair and 1 unpaired electron as it was a free radical (2 marks ?)
Then below I said it was not linear since there was a net dipole moment and the central chlorine atom had a lone pair. (1 mark)
The roman numbers were indicating oxidation number of chlorine ions in the chlorate ion i said (1 mark)
For the disproportionation it could be between +4 and +7 for both oxidation and reduction. So that it can reduce to 4 and oxidise to 7 (oxidatiin numbers of chlorine in the products) (2 marks)
HClO3 was the molecular formula I found (4 marks)
2 step reaction:
KClO3 + H2SO4 HClO3 + KHSO4
HClO3 -> HClO4 + ClO2
I was just not able to balance the second one and put a random 2 on the HClO3 lmao (2 marks)
About the last biggie boi question:
The peaks were due to one being full C5H8 (in structural formula) don't remember the second one but it was the structure that lacks methyl group ig (2 marks?)
3 peaks: C-H stretching in alkenes C-H stretching in alkanes C=C stretching in alkenes not sure about what to draw so (3 marks)
The given 2 other compounds were also terpenes as they have had the same empirical formula (C5H8) Both were made up of 2 isoprene units, only one of them was cyclo- structured I said. (2 markers)
1766 cm³ and 2650 cm³ kind of volumes I got for hydrogen. (4 marks?)
About six marker:
The first student's method was potassium dichromate which is useful for primary and secondary alcohols. Tertiary one cannot be oxidised. For primary and secondry the colour of the solution turns from orange to green. The primary one forms an aldehyde or carboxylic acid while the secondary one forms a ketone with C=O bond.
Second student's method was potassium manganate which was useful for the molecules that contained double bonds to form further -oh bonds and so diols. It would turn from purple to colourless. It was not effective for the molecule on the left.
The third student's method was the most effective I said. It's because all the alcohols can react with PCl5 and they release steamy fumes of HCl indicating that they contained an -oh group. (6 marks)
The first classic question:
Elimination (1 mark)
Use ethanol as solvent for KOH (1 mark)
And to obtain alcohol from that halogenoalkane use aqueous KOH (1 mark)
There was the mechanism for nucleophilic substitution ( 4 marks?)
The fastest hydrolysed one was tertiary and the one with C-I bond as it had a lower bond enthalpy. (2 marks)
Enthalpy change question: Max temp: 27.7 degrees Max volume: 21.0cm³ (2 marks)
Moles of ammonia (1 mark)
delta H was about -51-53 kj/mol somethin (4 marks?)
About multiple choice:
1st question was A (enthalpy change of reaction)
Sodium nitrate
Cl have higher first ionisation energy than Br
2.9 (mol/dm³?)
Highest boiling temperautre was the one with longest chain, no branches
Red to orange (acid to alkali) There was an another section of this question like "which one is true?" I don't remember what I did for that one
And some more multiple qss
There was also some "give the name of the compound" qs

2024.05.12 17:08 constHarmony Light-Based Methods for Measuring and Treating Tinnitus in Rats

Dr. Katayoon Montazeri of the ENT and Head and Neck Research Center at the Iran University of Medical Sciences presents her tinnitus research in rats using light-based methods.
She discusses her first study, which developed a new light-based method (oABR) to objectively measure tinnitus. oABR produced clearer brain activity measurements, with wave II amplitudes significantly higher than those in aABR. Additionally, oABR detected significant tinnitus-related changes, such as a decrease in wave II amplitude and an increase in threshold, while aABR only showed significant changes in threshold.
Dr. Montazeri also provides a small glimpse into her recently published follow-up study, which used photobiomodulation therapy to treat tinnitus in rats. The therapy targeted brain regions involved in tinnitus, including the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN), dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus, and parafloccular lobe (PFL) of the cerebellum. The study evaluated the therapy's effects using traditional aABR, a behavioral test called gap-prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle (GPIAS), and a marker of neuroplasticity called doublecortin (DCX).
The photobiomodulation therapy was administered using an 808 nm wavelength laser with a power density of 165 mW/cm² and an energy density of 99 J/cm² per session. The treatment was performed once a day for 8 consecutive sessions, with each session consisting of 10 minutes of irradiation to the whole brain and 10 minutes to each ear (total of 30 minutes per session). The researchers conducted GPIAS tests on days 1, 7, and 15, and performed aABR tests on days 1 and 15.
In the tinnitus group, DCX expression significantly increased in the DCN, DG, and PFL, indicating tinnitus-related neuroplasticity. The light therapy significantly reduced DCX expression in the DG, suggesting a reduction in tinnitus-related neuroplasticity. The therapy also normalized the animals' behavioral responses to tinnitus, with a significant increase in the GPIAS value, indicating a decrease in tinnitus perception. Furthermore, the aABR threshold and brainstem transmission time (BTT), which were elevated in the tinnitus group, returned to normal levels after light therapy.

Help with white phosphorus
Hey guys first post here! So today while I was working on my phosphorus project I've been working on for a long time I had a bit of an explosion. I used stoimetric amounts of 200 mesh aluminum powder, homemade sodium hexametaphosphate and some silicon dioxide. I can't remember if I added a flux of NaCl or not. Anyways all the guides and videos show it as a slow process of heating it in a retort and the phosphorus fumes condense underwater. I tired this once but was unable to reach the required temp to reduce the phosphate to elemental phosphorus (probably a good thing too as you'll see in a sec!). I took out a bit out of my metal retort and placed it in a glass test tube that a melted and bent to try to catch the fumes better. The end was still exposed to the atmosphere with no atrempt to condense the fumes underwater this time. As I applied the heat via blowtorch, what looked like white phosphorus started forming above the reaction and I saw small yellow/orange drops forming within the reaction mixture. It was about this time I noticed a crack in the glass but I don't know if this was the issue that caused the explosion. I continued heating and the thing literally exploded. It didn't have the characteristic flash of aluminum powder but it definitely could have had some in it as it was bright. Luckily the glass was soft from the blowtorch so it didn't shoot fragments as much as it could have. Pretty much my question is, why did it explode? I tested more on flat rocks and it literally acts like a flash powder that smells like garlic. If I'm going to do this on a bigger scale I'd like to know it won't explode in a pipe in my face haha. Is there a way to slow the reaction to be more controlled and less, flash powder like? Like I mentioned, my sodium hexametaphosphate was homemade so I wonder if that could be it. I do have 2 kg of stuff I bought online so I'll test that here soon. Any advice from anyone more familiar with phosphate reduction? Thanks for any advice in advance :) I also posted this to science madness

2024.05.05 12:52 Aurora_Ala German Wikipedia Page for PSSD

I just found out that there is a PSSD page in German and it does support the theory of epigenics changes.
"On a cerebral-molecular level, there is a significant and lasting reduction in tryptophan hydroxylases in the dorsal raphe nucleus and reduced expression of serotonin transporters (SERT) in the cerebral cortex."

This would support the claim that we have high serotonin signaling and and low serotonin turnover. Upregulating TPH or resentizising receptors won't do anything as long as we have low SERT activity. And since there is no medication or supplement - not a single substance that is proven to upregulate SERT we cannot test this hypothesis...
I will be trying a regime of Curcumin, Quercetin, Sodium Butyrate, Tributyrin (HDAC Inhbitors and potentially Demethylating Agents), Berberine (potential SERT upregulation) and Licorice (increases Cortisol) soon.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Here is a translated version:

Causes
The cause of PSSD is not precisely known at this time. Most doctors are unaware of the possibility of lasting effects or automatically attribute it to psychological reasons.[30][18][5] However, psychological associations could not be found in several of the case reports mentioned above. Regarding SSRI-associated sexual dysfunction, it is demanded that doctors be aware that delayed orgasm/delayed ejaculation is a symptom most commonly associated with SSRIs and usually not with depression.[16] Similarly, reduced genital sensation, which may be causative of delayed ejaculation[17], is linked in the literature to the use of SSRIs rather than the disorders or complaints for which they are prescribed.[18][38]
The US-based Expert Panel on Reproductive Risks (Center for the Evaluation of Risks to the Human Reproduction) classifies the prototypical SSRI fluoxetine (Prozac) as a reproductive toxin.[39]
Since 2011, the American prescribing information for the SSRI fluoxetine has stated that symptoms of sexual dysfunction may persist after discontinuation of fluoxetine treatment.[3]
After an internal investigation, the pharmaceutical company Sanofi is said to have concluded that SSRIs could be associated with persistent sexual disorders after discontinuation of treatment.[40]
Animal Studies Experiments with rodents have shown that two or four weeks of SSRI treatment at a young age lead to a persistent impairment of sexual behavior, which persists into adulthood[41][42][43] and resembles several PSSD case reports[30]. On a cerebral-molecular level, there is a significant and lasting reduction in tryptophan hydroxylases in the dorsal raphe nucleus and reduced expression of serotonin transporters (SERT) in the cerebral cortex. Additionally, it has been found that treating the mother animal with fluoxetine during pregnancy and lactation reduces the sexual drive[44] and fertility[45] of their male offspring. It cannot be ruled out that later behavioral neurological consequences may also occur in humans because children exposed to SSRIs in utero have not been studied beyond early childhood.[46]
Long-term Consequences
In research, it is sometimes argued that all pharmaceutical drugs have epigenetic effects.[47] For example, chronic treatment of rats with fluoxetine for 14 days permanently desensitizes their 5-HT1A receptors, beyond the cessation of SSRI use.[48] Such long-term adaptations of 5-HT receptors, as well as more complex global changes, likely arise through changes in gene expression.[49][50][51][52][53] Some of these gene expression adaptations result from altered DNA structure caused by chromatin remodeling: epigenetic modification of histones[56] and gene silencing through DNA methylation due to increased expression of methyl-binding proteins MeCP2 and MBD1.[57] Changes in gene expression and chromatin remodeling are also part of the mechanism of action of electroconvulsive therapy.[58][59]

2024.05.03 18:14 StephenAbresch Kirkocet: A New Face Shrinking Street Drug with Alarming Effects

Kirkocet: A New Face Shrinking Street Drug with Alarming Effects
Kirkocet: A New Face Shrinking Street Drug with Alarming Effects
Baltimore, MD - The emergence of Kirkocet, a novel street drug, has sparked concern among health professionals and law enforcement agencies due to its unique and alarming effects on users.
What is it? It's chemical name is 5,6-pedophilicacid-ethyl-niacinomide-iso-sodium but it's better known by its street name, Kirkocet. It is usually sold on the street in pressed tablets (pictured in the PSA above).
How it works: Though its exact mechanism of action is unknown, it is believed to work by binding to MAGA receptors in the brain. This modulation of the MAGA receptor causes a sudden and marked decrease in both intelligence and empathy. In a world plagued by poverty, inequality, corruption, climate change, war and so forth, being too stupid to understand these issues and being too mean-spirited to care is increasingly appealing to a certain demographic of people. It is this demographic of people that has been hit hardest by the Kirkocet epidemic.
'Fentanyl analogues, Xylazine, meth, crack...Kirkocet is more dangerous than all of these put together,' says Dr. Edward Punjab, Medical Director at New Hope Clinic in Baltimore, MD. 'Right now,' he continued, 'rural areas, middle America and the elderly have been hardest hit by this epidemic. But we're starting to see cases all over now. It's no longer an isolated problem.'
The drug's street name, Kirkocet, comes from it's face constricting and head dilating side effects with chronic users being observed with heads so large and faces so small that they resemble Charlie Kirk, the right wing personality best known for his work standing in front of a white wall telling lies. Kirkocet is a portmanteau of Charlie Kirk's surname and Percocet, the oxycodone containing medication partially responsible for kick-starting the previous drug epidemic, a drug epidemic that seems like a distant memory of a pleasant dream in comparison to what we're seeing with Kirkocet.
Now, there are signs to look out for that indicate your loved one might be abusing Kirkocet. The easiest signs to spot are the physical ones: a constricted (pinned) face, dilated (blown out) head and a smug look of unmerited erodity are the most common signs. But the physical signs may not be noticable until after addiction has already taken hold. Therefore, it's imperative to also be aware of the acute behavioral cues to look out for. Look for a sudden decrease in critical thinking and empathy. 'If your loved one suddenly starts referring to everything they don't like as 'communism,' that should immediately raise red flags.' Warns Dr. Punjab, 'Doubly so if they start blaming Biden for things such as misplacing their keys, stubbing their toe or their premature ejaculation.'
Though as of now there is no cure for Kirkocet addiction, it can be arrested at some point and recovery is then possible. There are currently two camps: Harm reduction, which involves switching the patient to a less harmful substance such as fentanyl or crack cocaine. And abstinence, which I guess is not having sex or something. Sounds lame.
It is too early to tell how this epidemic will progress but one thing is certain, things seem like they will get worse before they get better. Law enforcement refuses to step up enforcement which is likely a result of sweeping Kirkocet abuse among the police force and the DEA. Partners For A Drug-Free America has launched a $1.3 million 'Small Face, Huge Consequences' campaign aimed at educating the public, but they have an uphill battle ahead of them. We reached out to TPUSA and Charlie Kirk for comment but they would only agree to give a statement if it was in front of a white wall.

2024.04.30 21:19 fifi_edits Top 7 Fermented Foods on Keto

Fermented foods have been a culinary staple for millennia due to their multitude of health advantages and their role in preserving food. Discover the top seven fermented foods you can enjoy on a ketogenic diet and learn how regularly consuming them can improve your digestive health and overall well-being.
What are fermented foods?
Fermentation is a natural process involving the metabolic action of microorganisms, including bacteria and certain yeasts. During fermentation, these microbes convert sugars and starches into various substances, including alcohol, carbon dioxide, and organic acids. Fermentation is a form of food preservation fundamental for producing a wide range of foods and beverages, including sourdough bread, fermented vegetables, cheese, yogurt, kombucha, beer, and wine. Active cultures of microorganisms are usually deliberately introduced to the food source to initiate fermentation processes. However, their growth can also occur spontaneously, depending on the fermentation technique employed.
Microbial fermentation has been utilized to create over five thousand different types of fermented foods worldwide, each with its unique flavor, texture, and nutritional profile. The bacterial species involved in fermentation processes not only help to preserve foods but also promote a diverse intestinal microflora, making fermented foods an excellent source of health-promoting probiotics. Due to their vast diversity of probiotic strains, regularly consuming fermented foods can increase microbial gut diversity, which is linked to numerous profound health benefits.
Benefits of fermented foods on keto
The substantial health benefits of fermented food are attributed to its abundance of probiotic bacteria, bioactive peptides, and microbial metabolites, which offer several health advantages.
1. Improve digestive health
Fermented foods not only contain probiotics but are also a rich source of enzymes that help to break down food, which supports gut health and improves digestion. This enhances the absorption of essential nutrients such as vitamins B and K, iron, magnesium, and zinc. These vital nutrients are crucial for many physiological functions, including energy production and neuronal health, while supporting metabolic balance. In addition, beneficial bacteria in fermented foods play a critical role in promoting a balanced intestinal microflora and can help relieve digestive issues. Probiotics also enhance gut barrier function and inhibit the growth of potentially harmful bacteria, which is crucial to prevent intestinal inflammation and poor nutrient absorption.

2. Support immune function

The rich diversity of probiotic strains in fermented foods promotes balanced immune responses by stimulating immune cells and enhancing their ability to identify and eliminate harmful pathogens more quickly. Additionally, certain probiotic peptides in fermented foods have immune-supporting attributes such as anti-carcinogenic, anti-allergenic, and anti-inflammatory properties, according to evidence%20have,and%20remove%20some%20non%2Dnutrients) published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition.

3. Nutritional powerhouse

Consuming fermented foods can be a highly nutritious addition to any diet. A study published in Nutrients observed that fermentation can enhance the nutritional profile of foods by increasing the levels of certain vitamins, including vitamins B2, B12, and K, as well as folate. These vitamins support energy production, cellular function, DNA synthesis and repair, neurological function, bone health, and blood clotting.

4. Rich in antioxidants

Evidence published in Antioxidants suggests that the fermentation process not only helps to increase the availability of phytochemicals but also fosters the synthesis of antioxidants that may be absent in raw foods. Dietary antioxidants help promote overall health by mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation, which can play a supportive role in the prevention and management of various chronic diseases.

5. Antifungal properties

According to research published in Infections and Immunity, lactic acid bacteria present in fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir, can inhibit yeast overgrowth. Specifically, it may effectively inhibit the development of Candida albicans, a common and potentially harmful candida yeast strain that can affect the digestive and reproductive tract. In addition, a study published in Foods discovered that lactic acid bacteria produce various antifungal metabolites that act as natural preservatives against fungal contamination and mycotoxin production in foods. These findings demonstrate that certain probiotic strains are a potential natural substitute for synthetic antifungal preservatives and may help protect against fungal infections and food poisoning.
Best fermented foods to have on keto.
Many low-carb foods can be fortified by fermentation to enhance their taste, shelf life, and nutritional value. This makes fermented foods an ideal choice for low-carb diets such as keto. While there are hundreds of fermented foods, here are seven of the top keto-approved options.

1. Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut is a type of fermented cabbage. Lactobacillus bacteria naturally present on cabbage leaves convert sugars into lactic acid, preserving the cabbage and imbuing it with its distinct tangy flavor.
"Out of all the fermented foods, sauerkraut is at the top of the list for its exceptionally high vitamin C content," explains Dr. Berg, "And, what’s more, the lactic acid content of sauerkraut helps to inhibit harmful microbes and enhances the body’s ability to absorb vital minerals."
Sauerkraut is also a rich source of vitamin K2, crucial for directing calcium into the bones and away from soft tissues, thereby supporting bone health and lowering the risk of vascular calcification. Sauerkraut's many digestive health benefits, along with its low carbohydrate and sugar content, make it an excellent choice for a keto diet.

2. Kimchi

Kimchi, a staple in Korean cuisine, is created by fermenting cabbage with various spices and seasonings such as garlic and chili pepper. This creates a spicy and sour cabbage flavor that can be enjoyed on its own or added as a garnish to a variety of dishes. Research published in Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism indicated that kimchi consumption may benefit weight management and metabolic health. Over a four-week period, participants who consumed fresh kimchi experienced reductions in body weight, body mass index, and waist circumference, while displaying improvements in other metabolic health markers.

3. Low-carb fermented vegetables

In general, low-carb fermented vegetables are an excellent choice for individuals following the ketogenic diet. Most fermented vegetable products are rich sources of lactic acid bacteria and are preserved in a saltwater brine, which enhances their flavor while preserving their crunch. Fermented vegetables are low in calories and carbohydrates and can be a great source of sodium and potassium, making them an excellent keto-friendly option to help maintain electrolyte balance.

4. Cheese

Cheese is one of the ketogenic diet's mainstays as it's an excellent low-carb source of healthy fats and protein. Full-fat cheese varieties such as cottage cheese, mozzarella, and cheddar are some of the best choices. Traditional cheese is made from fermented milk, which undergoes bacterial and enzymatic breakdown of milk proteins, enhancing its flavor and digestibility. According to research published by Foods and Function, bioactive peptides released during milk fermentation exhibit various beneficial qualities, including blood pressure lowering and antimicrobial effects. Additionally, cheese provides several essential nutrients, such as vitamin A, B vitamins, and minerals, including calcium and potassium. These nutrients help support vision, skin health, blood pressure regulation, and metabolic balance.

5. Kefir

Kefir is a nutritious fermented dairy product crafted by introducing probiotic kefir grains into milk. These grains are a starter culture that initiates the fermentation of milk with a diverse community of probiotics and yeasts. As the culture goes to work, it metabolizes lactose, a type of milk sugar, and transforms it into a distinctive, tangy, probiotic-rich, drinkable yogurt.
6. Apple cider vinegar
Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar is a particularly valuable addition to a ketogenic diet due to its acetic acid content, which can help regulate blood sugar levels and enhance satiety, supporting metabolism and fat burning. In addition to the probiotic content of apple cider vinegar, it's also a good source of antioxidants that support immune function and may help reduce cellular damage and inflammation.

7. Olives

Olives are one of the most fermented foods. In fact, it’s not recommended to eat olives raw as they contain large amounts of oleuropein, a bitter compound that makes them unpalatable and can cause gastrointestinal discomfort. By fermenting olives in brine, they develop distinct flavors, becoming a versatile ingredient enjoyed in various dishes, including salads, pizzas, and spreads. Olives are an excellent addition to a keto diet, providing a delicious source of healthy fats, antioxidants, and vitamins E and K.

2024.04.27 21:42 Infamous-Notice-1804 Ketogenic Diet Beginners – Starting Keto 2024

Starting Ketogenic Diet Beginners on your nutrition journey in 2024? The ketogenic diet is a powerful, low-carb eating plan that can help you lose weight, improve your energy levels, and enhance overall health. Let’s dive into the basics and set you up for success.
First off, understanding what “going keto” means is crucial. The goal of the ketogenic diet is to get your body into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. This shift not only helps with weight loss but also boosts your energy levels and mental clarity.
Here’s how you can start your ketogenic diet beginners journey:
  1. Familiarize Yourself With Keto-Friendly Foods Learn which foods are your allies on this journey. Your diet will primarily focus on fats, moderate protein, and very low carbs. Think avocados, cheese, nuts, fatty fish, meats, and plenty of low-carb veggies like spinach, broccoli, and zucchini.
  2. Plan Your Meals Planning is your best friend. Start by planning your meals and snacks ahead of time to avoid the temptation of grabbing a high-carb snack. Many beginners find it helpful to write down their weekly meal plans.
  3. Clear Out Non-Keto Foods Out of sight, out of mind! Clear your pantry and fridge of high-carb foods that could derail your progress. This includes sugary snacks, cereals, bread, and other processed foods high in carbs.
  4. Stay Hydrated and Mind Your Electrolytes Switching to a ketogenic diet can sometimes result in an initial loss of water weight. It’s vital to stay hydrated and make sure you’re getting enough sodium, potassium, and magnesium, as these electrolytes can be depleted faster on keto.
  5. Be Patient and Kind to Yourself Every beginning has its challenges. You may experience what’s known as the “keto flu,” a short period where your body adjusts to its new fuel source. Symptoms may include fatigue, headache, and brain fog, but don’t worry, these are temporary.
  6. Connect With a Community You’re not alone on this journey. There are countless online forums, social media groups, and local meet-ups with fellow ketogenic diet beginners. These communities can be great sources of support, inspiration, and tips.
Embarking on the ketogenic diet is a significant step towards a healthier lifestyle. Remember, it’s not about perfection but progress. Listen to your body, adjust as necessary, and celebrate your successes, no matter how small they seem.
Welcome to the world of ketogenic diet beginners! Here’s to a transformative 2024 filled with health, happiness, and delicious, nourishing foods.
Ketogenic Diet Beginners – Starting Keto When you’re stepping into the world of ketogenic diet beginners, it’s like embarking on a journey that reshapes how your body processes energy, promising potential benefits like weight loss, improved mental clarity, and enhanced metabolic health.
The ketogenic, or keto, diet primarily revolves around high fat, moderate protein, and very low carbohydrate intake, encouraging your body to enter a state of ketosis. In ketosis, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy, a departure from its default mode of relying on carbohydrates.
This shift not only aids in shedding pounds but is also linked to a decrease in blood sugar and insulin levels, contributing to the management of conditions such as diabetes and potentially even leading to improvements in neurological disorders.
For those diving into the ketogenic diet beginners pool, there’s a need for a mindful approach to navigate this lifestyle successfully. One of the foundational steps involves understanding which foods to embrace and which to avoid.
Fats will constitute the majority of your caloric intake, coming from sources like avocados, coconut oil, butter, and fatty cuts of meat, while proteins are to be consumed in moderation. The real challenge, however, lies in drastically reducing carbohydrate intake, meaning that staples such as bread, pasta, rice, and high-sugar fruits must be replaced with leafy greens and other low-carb vegetables.
Furthermore, due diligence is required to keep track of your intake, ensuring that your body remains in ketosis without reverting to its usual carb-burning mode.
As such, the transition to a keto lifestyle demands a considerable degree of planning, from grocery shopping to meal preparation, to ensure that your dietary choices align with your goals.
Moreover, embarking on this journey as part of the ketogenic diet beginners group comes with its set of hurdles, notably the keto flu. This term describes the temporary side effects many experience during the early stages of ketosis, including fatigue, headaches, and foggy thinking.
Ketogenic Diet Beginners - Starting Keto 2024 These symptoms underscore the importance of hydration and the need to replenish electrolytes, which can be depleted more rapidly on this diet. It also highlights the broader requirement for patience and resilience as your body adapts to its new energy source. Beyond physiological adjustments, the keto diet can also prompt a reevaluation of one’s relationship with food, challenging long-held beliefs about fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.
As such, beginners are encouraged to seek support, whether through communities of fellow keto enthusiasts or by consulting healthcare professionals to ensure that their dietary choices support their overall health and well-being.
Diving into the ketogenic diet is no small feat; it represents a significant shift from conventional dietary paradigms toward a lifestyle that prioritizes fat as the primary fuel source.
For ketogenic diet beginners, the journey is lined with both challenges and opportunities for profound health transformations. With careful planning, mindfulness, and a spirit of exploration, beginners can navigate this path, redefining their energy, health, and relationship with food along the way.
High Triglycerides on Ketogenic Diet Navigating the waters of a ketogenic diet can often lead to remarkable health benefits, including significant weight loss, improved energy levels, and better control over blood sugar. However, one concern that may arise for individuals embarking on this low-carb, high-fat journey is the effect on their lipid profile, particularly when it comes to high triglycerides.
Traditionally, increased fat intake is associated with a rise in triglycerides, a type of fat found in your blood tied to an elevated risk of heart disease. Considering the ketogenic diet’s heavy reliance on fats, it seems counterintuitive that it could actually help manage or even lower high triglycerides.
The ketogenic diet works by shifting the body’s primary energy source from carbohydrates to fats, a process that requires the liver to break down fat into ketones for energy, effectively turning the body into a fat-burning machine.
This metabolic switch appears to have a paradoxical effect on blood lipids; while dietary fat intake increases, many adherents report reductions in their triglyceride levels. The reason behind this lies in the nature of the diet itself.
Ketogenic Diet Beginners - Starting Keto 2024 By significantly reducing carbohydrate intake, the body stores less fat, thus potentially decreasing the production of triglycerides. Moreover, the ketogenic diet encourages the intake of healthier fats, such as those from avocados, nuts, and fish, which can have a positive impact on one’s lipid profile.
However, the response to a ketogenic diet in terms of triglyceride levels can vary from person to person, influenced by genetic factors, the quality of fats consumed, and how well one adheres to the carb restriction.
It’s crucial for individuals with high triglycerides considering or already following a ketogenic diet to closely monitor their lipid profile through regular blood tests and consultations with their healthcare provider. Additionally, focusing on the quality of dietary fat—prioritizing unsaturated fats over saturated and trans fats—can help mitigate potential risks and enhance the diet’s cardiovascular benefits.
In essence, while the ketogenic diet poses a radical departure from traditional dietary approaches to managing high triglycerides, it may offer an effective strategy for some. It underscores the importance of personalized nutrition and regular medical supervision to ensure that diet adjustments contribute positively to one’s overall health profile.

2024.04.27 01:09 GibDopamine :s help?!

The heart muscle operates at 310 K based on the principles of a concentration cell. Such a cell uses different concentrations of sodium (Na) ions (0.001 M and 0.100 M), inside and outside its cells, based on the two following reduction half-reactions:
Na+ (aq) (0.001 M) -> Na (s) Ered = -2.71 V
Na+ (aq) (0.100 M) -> Na (s) Ered = -2.71 V
Using the half-reaction method, derive the overall redox reaction. Identify the anode and cathode of the cell, the oxidizing and reducing agent, the flow of electrons, and the changes in numbers oxidation of atoms.
=> I thought that a strong oxidizing agent has + reduction potential while for a strong reducing agent the opposite applies => So since the concentration of 0.001M has the same reduction potential but at a lower concentration it'll..*? I am not sure... Also by looking at the reactions they become: Na+ +e- -> Na. I know how to explain the other parts, I'm just not sure how to determine the oxidation/reduction part in this particular example. Thanks in advance!!

Wondering if I have all this correct before I attempt???
Two alternate synths I'm looking at depending on how easy to get acetaldehyde..... ect
A version of Hamilton Morris's (not invented but popularised) 5meo synth
with tryptamine not 5meo and the formaldehyde swapped for acetaldehyde Then as normal With borohydride to reduce all suspended in methanol and koh And carried out at or below 0°c Forming DET
The other is similar to shulgins listed second synthesis in tikhal
Tryptamine is mixed with ethyl iodide suspended in di-isopropyl-ethylamine and isopropanol Then stired at room temperature To form DET?
Am I missing anything?is the DET reductive amination possible?

2024.04.25 15:16 annette73 How Do I Get Rid of Cankles: Ultimate Guide & Success Stories

How Do I Get Rid of Cankles: Cankles, the area where the calf and ankle meet without clear definition, often lead to frustration and body image concerns for those seeking a more toned leg appearance, potentially due to poor circulation. Unlike the well-defined ankles admired in summer footwear, cankles can make finding flattering shoes a challenge and dent self-confidence. The good news is, targeting cankles is not as daunting as it seems. With the right approach combining diet adjustments, specific exercises, and lifestyle changes, you can work towards sculpting the defined ankles you desire. This post dives into practical strategies to bid farewell to cankles, offering insights into how minor tweaks in your daily routine can lead to significant changes in how you feel about your legs.

Key Takeaways

Understanding Cankles

Definition and Causes

Cankles, a term blending "calf" and "ankles," describe the appearance of thick ankles with no clear separation from the calves. This condition stems from a variety of factors, both genetic and environmental. Common causes include genetics, certain health conditions, and lifestyle choices. It's crucial to recognize that both internal and external influences, including specific training, play significant roles in the development of cankles.

Genetics Role

Genetics significantly contribute to the formation of cankles. Many people inherit their lower leg shape, including the propensity for thicker ankles. The way fat is distributed across our bodies and how our muscles are structured are largely dictated by our genes. Understanding your genetic background is vital when addressing issues related to cankles.

Health Conditions

Several health conditions can lead to the development of cankles. Obesity, diabetes, and venous insufficiency in the ankle area are among the top culprits. Hormonal imbalances and systemic diseases also play a role in exacerbating lower leg swelling. In cases where health conditions are at the root of cankle formation, seeking medical intervention becomes necessary.

Other Triggers

Beyond genetics and health issues, various lifestyle and environmental factors can trigger the onset of thick ankles. Prolonged periods of sitting, high salt consumption, and exposure to warm climates all contribute to this condition. Pregnancy and certain medications also have a significant impact on ankle swelling. Insect bites or stings that go untreated can lead to severe swelling in the ankle area.

Cankle Exercises

Calf Strengthening

To combat cankles, focusing on calf strengthening is crucial. Exercises like calf raises specifically target these muscles, enhancing definition and strength. Incorporating weight training can significantly boost muscle mass around the calves. This not only improves the appearance but also enhances leg function.
Weighted calf raises and leg presses are effective for building calf muscles. They should be part of a regular exercise routine. The benefits of calf strengthening extend beyond aesthetics. They include better stability, improved mobility, and reduced ankle swelling.

Toning Workouts

Toning workouts play a vital role in reducing cankles by promoting fat loss and muscle toning throughout the body. A balanced approach combines cardio exercises with strength training. This helps lower overall body fat percentage while improving muscle tone.
A recommended routine might start with a 30-minute cardio session to increase heart rate and burn calories. Follow this with strength training exercises focusing on the lower body, such as squats and lunges. Include flexibility exercises like stretches or yoga poses to ensure balanced toning.
Regular engagement in these activities leads to a more defined calf area, indirectly benefiting those struggling with cankles. The key is consistency and integrating both cardio and strength elements into your workout plan.

Flexibility Routines

Improving flexibility in the ankles and calves is essential for addressing cankles. Stretching exercises not only reduce tightness but also enhance circulation in the lower legs. Yoga and Pilates are highly effective for increasing flexibility, offering routines that specifically benefit the lower leg area.
Incorporating daily stretches for the calves and Achilles tendon can make a significant difference in flexibility over time. Regular yoga or Pilates sessions contribute to better posture, reduced risk of injuries, and improved overall leg appearance by promoting circulation.
The importance of regular flexibility routines cannot be overstated for those looking to improve their cankle situation. These practices support healthy movement patterns and contribute to a more toned appearance of the calves.

Dietary Advice

Fat Reduction

Reducing fat in the body, including the lower legs, requires a balanced approach to diet and exercise. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains helps in overall fat loss. It's vital to create a calorie deficit by consuming fewer calories than the body burns. This strategy aids in reducing body fat, which can consequently decrease the size of cankles.
Exercise plays a crucial role too. While targeted exercises do not directly reduce fat in specific areas, they help tone muscles and improve body composition. Combining cardiovascular exercises with strength training enhances fat loss across the body, including the calves and ankles. Sustainable lifestyle changes trump quick fixes every time. They ensure lasting results rather than temporary solutions that might lead to weight regain.

Improved Circulation

Activities like walking or cycling boost blood flow to the lower extremities, enhancing circulation. This is beneficial for those looking to minimize cankles. Improved circulation helps in reducing swelling and prevents fluid accumulation around the ankles and calves.
Elevating the legs above heart level several times a day promotes venous return and decreases edema. Compression garments also aid in maintaining proper blood flow, offering support to the veins and reducing swelling. These methods work together to alleviate current swelling while preventing future occurrences of cankles by ensuring healthy circulation.

Hydration Importance

Staying hydrated is key in managing cankles as it helps reduce fluid retention—a common factor contributing to swollen ankles and calves. Adequate water intake ensures that the body functions optimally, flushing out toxins that could lead to inflammation and swelling.
Dehydration aggravates swelling because when the body senses a lack of water, it holds onto fluids, worsening edema in areas like the ankles. The recommended daily water intake varies depending on individual factors such as weight, activity level, and climate but aiming for at least 8 glasses a day is a good start. Adjust this amount based on your personal needs and levels of physical activity.

Lifestyle Changes

Routine Adjustments

To combat cankles, modifying daily routines plays a crucial role. A balanced diet, especially one low in sodium, significantly reduces water retention. This change alone can make a noticeable difference in the appearance of cankles.
Taking short breaks to elevate the legs helps too. It's beneficial during long periods of sitting or standing. Elevating the legs aids in reducing swelling by improving circulation.
Quitting smoking is another vital step. It enhances vascular health and, as a result, may reduce the prominence of cankles. Improved blood flow supports the body's natural mechanisms for managing fluid and fat distribution.

Positive Body Image

Developing a positive body image is essential, regardless of cankle presence. Acceptance and appreciation of one's body foster a healthier relationship with oneself. This mindset shift encourages focusing on what the body can do rather than how it looks.
Strategies to focus on functionality over aesthetics include celebrating physical achievements and acknowledging the body's capabilities. Such an approach boosts self-esteem and contributes to overall well-being.
The psychological benefits of maintaining a positive body image are immense. They include increased happiness and reduced stress levels, which indirectly support efforts to address physical concerns like cankles.

Stress Management

Stress management directly influences body composition, including areas prone to fat accumulation like cankles. Techniques that reduce cortisol levels play a significant role here. Lower cortisol levels help in managing body fat distribution more effectively.
Mindfulness, meditation, and regular physical activity are proven stress reducers. They not only manage stress but also promote healthier lifestyle choices that contribute to addressing cankles.
Effective stress management leads to better sleep patterns, dietary choices, and exercise habits. These changes collectively support the goal of reducing cankle appearance by fostering an overall healthier lifestyle.

Treatment Options

Self-Care Practices

Regular foot and calf massages play a crucial role in combating cankles. They enhance circulation, easing the swelling. It's a simple yet effective method to address fluid retention issues.
Epsom salt baths offer another natural solution. Soaking your feet in warm water mixed with Epsom salts can significantly reduce swelling and discomfort. This remedy draws out excess fluids, providing relief from swollen ankles and feet.
Wearing shoes that fit well is essential. Tight or poorly fitting footwear can exacerbate pressure on the ankles, worsening the condition. Opt for shoes that support and cushion your feet without adding unnecessary strain on your ankles.

Medical Treatments

For those whose cankles stem from underlying health conditions, medical interventions might be necessary. These could range from simple medications to manage symptoms to more advanced treatments like compression therapy or surgery.
Medications can help control factors contributing to swelling, such as high blood pressure or heart conditions. Compression stockings are another effective option, improving blood flow and reducing fluid buildup in the affected areas.
Surgical options exist for severe cases where other treatments have not been effective. Procedures like liposuction or calf reshaping might be considered to achieve a more balanced appearance between the lower leg and ankle. However, these are typically last-resort options due to their invasive nature.
Consulting with a healthcare professional is imperative before choosing a treatment path. A doctor can provide a personalized plan based on the specific cause of your cankles, ensuring you receive the most appropriate care.

Preventive Measures

Regular Check-ups

Regular medical check-ups play a crucial role in managing health conditions that might contribute to cankles. Early detection of potential issues can significantly prevent the situation from worsening. Doctors often spot signs of fluid retention, hormonal imbalances, or circulation problems early on. These factors can lead to the development of cankles if left unchecked.
Keeping a health diary is highly beneficial. It helps track symptoms, dietary habits, and physical activity levels over time. This record becomes invaluable during medical appointments, offering insights that might hasten diagnosis and intervention.

Healthy Habits

Adopting a holistic approach to health is essential for anyone looking to reduce cankles. This means prioritizing not just physical well-being but also mental health. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains supports overall body health and can aid in reducing unwanted fat accumulation around the ankles.
Exercise plays a pivotal role too. Activities like walking, swimming, and cycling improve circulation and promote fat loss without putting excessive strain on the legs. Moreover, strength training targeting the lower body can help tone the area around the ankles.
Mental well-being should not be overlooked. Stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga, or even simple breathing exercises can help mitigate stress-induced eating behaviors that contribute to weight gain.
Setting realistic goals is key. Celebrating small victories along the way keeps motivation high and makes the journey more enjoyable. Whether it’s losing a bit of weight, being able to walk further than before, or simply feeling healthier—every achievement matters.

When to Seek Help

Recognizing Symptoms

It's crucial to identify the signs that suggest a need for professional advice. These include sudden, severe swelling or pain in the ankles and legs. Such symptoms should never be overlooked as they could hint at more serious health conditions.
Individuals must pay attention to changes in their lower extremities, particularly after starting new physical activities or making dietary adjustments. Persistent or worsening swelling, accompanied by discomfort, demands immediate medical evaluation. Ignoring these signs can lead to complications.

Professional Guidance

The importance of seeking professional guidance cannot be overstated when dealing with cankles. Doctors, nutritionists, and fitness experts bring invaluable expertise to the table. They offer personalized plans tailored to meet each person's unique needs and challenges in reducing ankle swelling.
A team approach ensures comprehensive management of one’s health and wellness goals. This collaborative effort maximizes the effectiveness of interventions designed to minimize cankles. It addresses not only the physical aspect but also nutritional and lifestyle factors contributing to the condition.

Success Stories

Before and After

Many people struggle with the appearance of their cankles, feeling self-conscious and seeking ways to reduce them. Success stories often begin with individuals feeling frustrated after noticing little to no definition between their calves and ankles. However, through dedication and targeted efforts, remarkable transformations are possible.
It's crucial to set realistic expectations for the journey ahead. Results typically don't appear overnight. Most success stories highlight a period of several months to over a year of consistent effort before seeing significant changes. This timeline varies from person to person, depending on factors like genetics, starting point, and the specific strategies employed.
Consistency and patience play vital roles in these transformations. Incorporating regular exercise, particularly activities that focus on toning the lower legs, alongside dietary adjustments, has proven effective for many. It's also important to note that while some individuals may see drastic reductions in their cankle appearance, others might notice more subtle changes. Both outcomes represent progress and are worth celebrating.

Testimonials

Personal testimonials offer a glimpse into the varied paths individuals have taken to manage their cankles successfully. From structured workout programs focusing on lower leg exercises to dietary changes and even medical interventions for those who sought professional help as discussed in the previous section.
One individual shared how incorporating daily walks, coupled with specific calf-strengthening exercises, gradually reshaped their lower legs over twelve months. They emphasized how initial discouragement gave way to excitement as they began to notice changes not just in appearance but in their overall health and stamina.
Another testimonial comes from someone who combined physical activity with mindful eating. They found that reducing sodium intake helped decrease water retention significantly, contributing to a more defined ankle area. Their journey was not only about reducing cankle appearance but also about adopting a healthier lifestyle overall.
These stories underscore the importance of finding a personalized approach that works for each individual. They serve as powerful reminders that while everyone's journey is unique, determination and adaptability are key components of success.
