My new, weird-fantasy module is available at xenobiblica.com
Hello everyone,
Long-time lurker in the community and OSR scene here. Patrick Stuart's books are what took me down the rabbit-hole in the first place. I used to work in a board game store; I remember my intrigue at seeing that bloody, bold hardcover of Veins of the Earth beckoning to me when I opened a box of new stock and the rest was history.
I've released a system-agnostic module called Xenobiblica: Sword Philosophy. It gives you a d100 table for randomly-generating weapons that have weird, OSR-flavored effects. The table itself can be downloaded for free in the sample PDF on DTRPG (albeit with an annoying watermark I thought I turned off). Art was done by Enes Gücük who has a creepy, astral-gothic art style.
I would like to release a whole series of 10-20 of these Xenobiblica modules that let you randomly-generate every aspect of a campaign. I'm also including a secret in each module that (assuming the series is popular enough to warrant it) will result in a small ARG reward when all are discovered.
If this all sounds like your cup of tea, check out the official website to get started: xenobiblica.com
Thank you for reading

2024.05.13 22:58 bigchives Comparing GrapheneOS with Stock Android: What's Different?

GrapheneOS and stock Android are both OS options for phones. GrapheneOS focuses on keeping your info safe. Stock Android, on the other hand, offers many handy features. Let's dive into how these two differ in privacy, security, and what you can do. This way, you can pick the one that suits your needs best.

Key Takeaways:

GrapheneOS Features

GrapheneOS is known for its strong focus on privacy and security. This makes it perfect for those who want to keep their data safe. Now, let's look at what makes GrapheneOS stand out from the rest.

Sandboxed Google Play Services

One of GrapheneOS's key features is sandboxed Google Play services. This means apps can't freely access your private data. They're limited to a safe area. This helps prevent data leaks and stops apps from seeing more than they should.

Regular Updates for Security Maintenance

GrapheneOS keeps devices safe by offering frequent security updates. These updates fix any new vulnerabilities that might arise. This way, the system is always up-to-date, keeping your device secure.

Attack Surface Reduction Measures

GrapheneOS uses techniques to reduce the chances of different types of attacks. It limits how much apps can interact with the system, blocking some attacks right at the start. It also includes special features that make it harder for attackers to exploit the system.

Enhanced Heap Memory Corruption Defense

Heaps are a common target for hackers, but GrapheneOS strengthens against this. It uses its own memory management system to protect against heap corruption. This includes special memory handling to make attacks harder.

Robust Memory Exploit Detection and Prevention

GrapheneOS is ahead of the game in detecting and stopping memory exploits. It has tools that spot and fix important memory bugs. This helps keep your device safe from complex attacks that target memory use.

Official Production Support for Pixel Devices

GrapheneOS supports many Pixel devices officially. This includes the Pixel 8 Pro and other new Pixel devices. Users of Pixel devices can get the added security and privacy GrapheneOS offers.
After learning about GrapheneOS, it's time to look at Stock Android's setup and features in the next section.

Stock Android Setup and Features

Setting up Stock Android on your device is simple. Its user-friendly interface makes it easy. When you turn on your device, you'll follow some steps to make it yours. This includes picking a language, connecting to Wi-Fi, and signing in to Google.
Stock Android works perfectly with Google's many services. Thanks to Google Play services, you get millions of apps and games from the Play Store. Just sign in with your Google account to start downloading your favorite apps, from work tools to social apps.
Stock Android also brings you Google Maps. It gives you precise directions and updates on traffic in real time. It's great for finding your way in a car or on foot, showing you the best routes and interesting places nearby.
With Google Keyboard, typing is easier and better. It guesses your next words, lets you swipe to type, and supports different languages. This means typing on your phone is faster and more accurate.

Key Features of Stock Android:

Features Stock Android
User-friendly setup
Google Play Store access
Google Maps integration
Enhanced typing experience with Google Keyboard

Functionality Comparison

GrapheneOS and stock Android are much alike in basic phone tasks. Yet, they have key differences.

GrapheneOS Functionality

GrapheneOS values substance over flashy marketing. It cares deeply about privacy and security. By not including Google services, it focuses more on protecting users.
Its main goal is making your device safe from attack. It does this by limiting what attackers can do and safeguarding the core part of the operation system.
It also stops attackers from taking full control even if they somehow get in. This is done through a feature called verified boot.
By removing unneeded code, GrapheneOS makes attacks from far away, close by, or online less likely. It adds layers of protection to apps and the system, making them much harder to exploit.
GrapheneOS Functionality Features Description
Sandboxed Play Services A sandboxed Play Services feature that provides better app compatibility, functionality, and security compared to MicroG.
Push Notifications without Play Services GrapheneOS allows push notifications to work fine without Play Services for many apps.
Privacy-Focused Network Toggle GrapheneOS offers a network toggle without leaks and prefers fine-grained VPNs for enhanced security.
GrapheneOS finds a sweet spot between being private, easy to use, and secure. It designs features to challenge any threats.

Stock Android Functionality

Stock Android, made by Google, aims for everyone. It has many features that cater to diverse needs.
One highlight is Android Auto, making your phone and car work together. This way, you keep your hands off the phone while driving yet enjoy many useful features.
Another cool feature is Now Playing. It shows what song is playing without you needing to open your phone. This is handy for finding new music.
Stock Android Functionality Features Description
Android Auto Android Auto provides seamless integration between Android devices and compatible vehicles for hands-free access to navigation, communication, and entertainment features.
Now Playing Now Playing feature The identifies and displays the currently playing song on the lock screen.
Such features make stock Android attractive for those who want a versatile system. It's packed with tools and tricks to make your life easier.
Remember, GrapheneOS and stock Android are both good for getting things done. Yet, GrapheneOS shines in protecting your privacy. This might mean fewer but more secure features.

Privacy and Security

When you pick a system for your phone, think about privacy and safety. GrapheneOS and stock Android protect your data in unique ways.

GrapheneOS Privacy and Security Features

GrapheneOS focuses heavily on keeping your data safe. It offers many tools to boost your privacy and security. These include limiting data collection and secure updates.

Stock Android Privacy and Security Considerations

Stock Android, made by Google, has its security perks. But it's heavily tied to Google's services. This can lead to less privacy.
Both GrapheneOS and stock Android care about security. However, GrapheneOS's special focus on privacy sets it apart. It's great for anyone who really values their data privacy.

Comparison Table: GrapheneOS vs. Stock Android Privacy and Security

Privacy and Security Features GrapheneOS Stock Android
Data Collection Minimizes data collection May collect user data through Google services
Updates Regular secure updates Regular updates to address security vulnerabilities
Google Services Access Restricted access to Google services System-level integration with Google services
Permission Controls Strict permission controls Permission customization options
Table: A comparison of privacy and security features offered by GrapheneOS and stock Android
In summary, if you're big on privacy, you'll like what GrapheneOS offers. It's a top choice. But if Google's services matter a lot to you, stock Android might be the way to go. It's not as privacy-focused, but it's great for those that love Google's features.

App Compatibility

GrapheneOS and stock Android both excel in app compatibility, but GrapheneOS faces challenges with some banking apps. These apps need special access. Yet, GrapheneOS aims for the highest privacy and security, sometimes making these needs clash.
Many apps are compatible with GrapheneOS, and the project actively works with developers. It encourages them to make their apps work with GrapheneOS. This allows users to enjoy the operating system's enhanced privacy and security safely.
Stock Android, on the other hand, has superior compatibility with all apps, including those from banks. It works across many devices and is chosen by developers. Its wide use makes it easier for developers to ensure app compatibility.
To make the app experience smoother on GrapheneOS, users can choose alternative apps that work well with the system. Also, the project is always updating to boost app compatibility through community efforts.

Recommended Banking Apps for GrapheneOS

Many banking apps face issues on GrapheneOS. Still, several banking apps perform well on this system:
Remember, although these apps are compatible with GrapheneOS, it's wise to confirm with your bank or financial institute for the latest compatibility updates.
As GrapheneOS grows, its app compatibility, including banking apps, is expected to get better. The project is dedicated to offering an experience that values security and privacy while ensuring apps work well.

User Feedback and Experience

GrapheneOS is great for privacy and security, which users love. They feel their data is safer and that Google tracks them less. Plus, it works well with most Android apps. This means users can still do what they want while keeping their privacy a top priority.
Some say that stock Android is smoother and has more useful features than GrapheneOS. They think that GrapheneOS focuses too much on privacy and misses out on some key features. For example, it doesn't work as closely with Google services and apps.
GrapheneOS users share their thoughts in forums, social media, and by talking to the team. They give detailed advice, like how to make permission prompts even safer. They also want the Auditor feature to be better explained, especially to journalists.
Users often request a better way to know when there are system updates. They want to be able to choose when to update, so it doesn't disrupt their day. They also ask about how to use the app pinning and auto-reboot timer, looking for more info.
Users also need more info about the Android Recovery system in GrapheneOS. They want to know more about its role in updating the system. And they worry about any issues the updates might bring.
Some users find features in GrapheneOS that remind them of Google. They want clearer information about these features. This way, they can understand them better.
App compatibility is an issue for some. A few apps won’t work on GrapheneOS because they fear security risks. Some just crash. This is why some users carry a second phone for specific apps, like banking or gaming.

User Profile Usage on GrapheneOS

GrapheneOS encourages the use of separate profiles for different apps. This keeps your privacy and security levels high. Users should have profiles for general use, social media, work, and private matters.

GrapheneOS Installation Ease

Installing GrapheneOS is known for being easy among custom OSes. The web interface makes the process straightforward. However, installing it on various computers might need extra steps sometimes.

GrapheneOS Benefits and Drawbacks

Why do people like GrapheneOS? It's great with most apps, makes you more secure, and doesn't let Google track you much. Plus, it backs up your apps very safely.
But it's not perfect. Some apps, like Facebook Messenger, have issues. The fingerprint sensor on the Google Pixel 6 isn’t the best. And sometimes you might face problems with internet when using a VPN.

Google Pixel 6 User Experience

The Google Pixel 6 is seen as a good buy by users. It offers good features and performance for its cost. However, the fingerprint sensor and the size of the phone get mixed reviews. The camera's quality also varies among users.

Overall Recommendation

Despite some issues, GrapheneOS is recommended by many for its strong privacy and security. It's a good choice for those who worry about Google spying on them.

User Feedback Overview

Feedback Request/Suggestion
Implementation of safeguards in on-demand permission prompts Enhancing permission controls for improved security
Better explanation and marketing of the Auditor feature Targeting investigative journalists as potential users
Proposal for a notification system for system updates Allowing manual installation of updates
Inquiry about the functionality of app pinning with auto-reboot timer Clarification on how the feature works
Request for clarification on Android Recovery system Understanding its role and potential issues with OTA updates
Identification of features resembling "Googlisms" Clear explanations and disclosures for informed usage
Challenges with app compatibility on de-googled version Issues with banking apps, food delivery apps, Uber, and mobile gaming

Future Development and Updates

GrapheneOS gets better thanks to the hard work of gifted developers. They're always updating it to make it safer and easier to use.
Updates bring new security patches, app changes, and more. For instance, new kernel updates might change to versions like 5.15.151 or 6.1.80. Apps like Vanadium might jump to new versions like 124.0.6367.159.0.
They use tags to give updates for certain devices. For example, a tag like 2024040100 might mean a special update for certain phones. These updates are meant to make your experience even better.
Recently, they made sure that VPN apps can't accidentally leak your web requests. They also update apps like PDF Viewer to make sure they run smoother. These updates are all about making your phone more enjoyable to use.
GrapheneOS also pays special attention to certain phones. For example, the Pixel Fold might receive updates specific to its design. This keeps your device running well and safe.
They change settings to make your phone safer and easier to use. For security, a new memory tag setting is available. You might see different settings based on what phone you have, making everything more user-friendly.
Improving apps is just as important to GrapheneOS. Apps like TalkBack, which helps by reading the screen, might get better with version 14.1. These changes aim to make using your favorite apps a smoother experience.
They also make technical updates to stay cutting-edge. A recent kernel update, like 5.15.149, makes your device more secure and faster.
Even the Camera app and GmsCompatConfig (used for Google services) get updated. This ensures your phone is more dependable and full of new features.

Official Device Support

GrapheneOS officially supports many Pixel models including the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 5a. These devices let you make the most of GrapheneOS's features.
Some Pixel phones, like the Pixel 5, won't get any more updates. Yet, the Pixel 4a and 4 XL keep getting support, like better security. This means you can still use these devices safely.
The 8th generation Pixel devices offer top security levels. They're supported for 7 years from their launch with features custom-tailored to protect your device.
Pixel devices get different levels of support based on their generation. The 8th generation has a longer 7-year support compared to 6th and 7th generation models, which gets 5 years. This shows GrapheneOS's focus on lasting security and usability.

Future Focus and Community Support

The team behind GrapheneOS aims to make major improvements in device, system, and software security. Their focus isn't on supporting every device but on ensuring profound security.
GrapheneOS has a strong community that loves its security. This community's dedication to privacy drives the project's advancement and success.

Related Alternatives

CalyxOS, RattlesnakeOS, DivestOS, and Ubuntu Touch offer different privacy and security features. Exploring these options can help you find the right system for your needs.

2024.05.13 15:16 NicoNet Dashcam failure with 2024.3.25

2020 MYLR. With the latest update (2024.3.25) the dashcam has stopped working. Have tried a few different USB drives, even brand new. Dashcam has the red X. Get "Dashcam unavailable Check USB drive" message when trying to tap in. In service mode I have a persistent warning of "Low Disk Space Free Space to Restore Functionality", even with no USB drive attached. Have formatted USB drive several times. I have uninstalled all arcade games (thinking it might be internal storage). Tried resetting DAS. Tried Reinstall Software, but it appears to fail, possibly due to the lack of disk space. When I plug in a USB stick with a custom Light Show or with music on it, it works just fine. Have also done several scroll wheel resets.
I set up mobile service. Service wrote back stating that they have remotely determined that it is not a hardware issue that they can fix. It is a firmware issue and Tesla engineers are working on a hotfix, and it will be downloaded as an OTA update in the future. They could not provide me with any ETA. Been two weeks without Dashcam and Sentry. All other vehicle functions are operating just fine. Anyone else experiencing this?

I just downloaded the game on my phone, finished a bunch of the solo missions and have like 9000 gems
I was thinking of a good deck to spend my gems on, and looks like you can get the branded cards in Secret Packs, but is it worth it?
In PC I play Swordsoul, but I wanna try something else that is more competitive, and I can't make Snake Eyes because the pack is gone

2024.05.13 05:37 xmeatizmurderx Love it or hate it the G Cloud is the future of handhelds. We are just not there yet.

If you are like me and plan to keep your devices for years or even decades then the G Cloud is the only handheld out there that will not become obsolete in a few years. I see posts all the time from the Legion Go, Rogue Ally and Steamdeck community where they are streaming their games and praising the quality and can’t help but laugh to myself - why would you carry that bulky thing around to stream games? I get it - right here and now slamming the fastest CPU you can into a handheld is the best you can get. The problem is the compromises (weight, heat, battery life, price) it kind of reminds me of the early days of handheld smartphones, I’m talking blackberry and windows phones from the early 2000’s. It was so cool to be able to go online, download a video to an SD card and watch it, etc. But the experience came with crazy compromises and a sky high price that made the devices obsolete shortly after they existed in the first place. This is where I feel we are at with these handhelds. Watching Asus tease the Ally X - an $800 devices that is releasing only a year after their $700 device and fixes problems that should’ve been addressed in the first place just makes me wonder why people bother. The steam deck OLED has a little more time and much better support but still costs twice as much as a G Cloud and in a few years the G cloud will still be at the peak of what it was designed for where everyone will be dumping their OLED decks for the next one. I could see myself continuing to use this device 5 or 6 years from now and if I only got 6 hours of battery vs 12 would it matter? When networks improve and get faster and more stable you won’t hear people saying streaming doesn’t work or that the device needs WiFi 6 or 7. In my opinion 5 is more than enough for a 1080 stream. I don’t have the fastest internet and I have put 100s of hours on my G Cloud from my Xbox.

2024.05.12 20:41 Stiopa866 Europa Expanded Dev Diary 12.05.2024 Heirs of Charlemagne

Europa Expanded Dev Diary 12.05.2024 Heirs of Charlemagne
Hello eu4 Enthusiasts!
Welcome to yet another Europa Expanded Dev Diary. Today we are talking about Burgundy/Lotharingia (for real this time), presented to you by LordVarangian.

Burgundy

Hello everyone, and long time no see!
I am LordVarangian once again, and last time I presented the Papal Mission tree. Now that Stiopa is done with his share of content for the time being, it is time I present a long awaited nation. One that has been both overlooked by us for quite a while and by Paradox since the Emperor DLC. That nation being none other than Burgundy.
Before we start with the mission tree, Burgundy has received a few setup changes. First of all, they get access to a new mechanic unique to them, the Order of the Golden Fleece, a council of knights which will allow you to make more planned wars throughout Europe, considering that you’ll be in conflict with both the French and the Holy Roman Empire, and maybe even a few Muslim empires... ;)
This mechanic is inspired by the historical Order of the Golden Fleece, which was founded by Philip the Good and served as a council of war for him. It also helped to strengthen the Burgundian court, as it was considered the model court of all of Europe.
With it, you’ll be able to hold tournaments, plan wars, and assign new Toison D’ors, a new advisor that Burgundy has access to.
https://preview.redd.it/esxdopgtb10d1.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=197ae2c0a6a8b267e8002c7fe35915e1f614f798
There are other setup changes as well. As you know, we want to maintain the tradition of giving nations privileges on gamestart to be more representative when it comes to differences between every nation. In Burgundy’s case, they start with Nobility in Officer Corps, Strong Duchies, Patronage of the Arts, and a new unique one, the Order of the Golden Fleece, a privilege that encourages cavalry use.
https://preview.redd.it/6vgahb03c10d1.png?width=798&format=png&auto=webp&s=ead8c454b82d6b23d48324a9ce57ac435482ac54
Without further ado though, let us get into the mission tree of both Burgundy and Lotharingia!
The tree gets expanded upon forming Lotharingia! (about the 3 last \"levels\" belong to Lotharingia alone)
The tree is split into different sections, as usual:
  • Missions that deal about the Low Countries and those rebellious stadhouders
  • A section about France and their false reign
  • Several branches that focus on you combatting the Holy Roman Empire and establishing yourself as Lotharingia
  • And the rest are Lotharingian flavor focused around becoming the model country of Europe, the true beacon of chivalry.
So let’s start, what about the Dutch? In previous development diaries we’ve talked about the situation in the Low Countries, how there are several stadhouders under the Burgundian yoke. Burgundy will be able to interact with them some more, reining in their rebellious stadhouders and being able to buff them should you wish to keep them as subjects. You will be able to enact a new privilege, the Great Privilege which will allow you to choose how to rule in the Low Countries. In the end of it all, you’ll be able to either take control of the Netherlands directly, or create a unified subject, which you may use for yourself.
https://preview.redd.it/zlx1eqhzc10d1.png?width=938&format=png&auto=webp&s=29c221ae188396fc65d999cf52dd3b9bf56cd2cf
Let us explore the Burgundian Ambitions in the west, where you’ll have to combat the French kings. However, your way of doing so will be ever so slightly different, as we want to encourage more vassal play as Burgundy. As such, you’ll be able to create Champagne as a vassal which will gain cores on Ile-de-France, encouraging you to do a reconquest war on the French early on. What’s more, this branch interacts with the Order of the Golden Fleece, as the interests in France are closer to you than German or Dutch. For those interested in forging a powerful, chivalric army specialized around armed knights on horses, choosing to form France will give you extra benefits.
https://preview.redd.it/ibe5us86e10d1.png?width=917&format=png&auto=webp&s=106e55b60caf0f313a4922fe12b7579f4de1d817
In terms of the remaining conquests, the Holy Roman Empire will be your main rival, as they contest the title which most of you so much desire, and that is the Kingdom of Lotharingia. For that, you will have to negotiate with the Emperor, or humiliate him in battle and claim the lands required for such a nation. You will also be able to expand into both Italy and Germany, as those are required for a proper Frankish nation, but most importantly you will be able to form Francia from within the Holy Roman Empire, giving you a reason to claim the Emperorship for yourself
https://preview.redd.it/v5au5q19e10d1.png?width=931&format=png&auto=webp&s=e78f6c9e2d2d3543c6fcb36822a303a289111d90
This is the only other way to form Francia, aside from starting as Aachen and following its mission tree.
With the conquest part of the mission tree done, let us look at some other parts of the tree, specifically the flavor side.
Firstly, before you even form Lotharingia and choose to revive the Frankish legacy, there is flavor for Burgundy’s role in its short lifespan, whilst also focusing on their unique mechanic. Before we get into that though, let’s go back and talk about Charles the Bold, the heir of Burgundy.
As he was quite ambitious and rash in history, we’ve decided to give him the trait The Bold which will turn the AI into one of the most bold nations in the game. Quite literally. Expect Burgundy to declare a lot of… “uneven” wars. (It’s fine, Charles can handle all them all)
https://preview.redd.it/sc55qnphe10d1.png?width=549&format=png&auto=webp&s=244bfe92fa8896fa92aaeba5b91232518962a9a6
There will be some interaction with the Burgundian Inheritance and the whole question of the Burgundian realm, where you will be separating your realm from that of France and Germany. You will also be able to go to war with both realms using the Burgundian Wars unique CB, which will make your rulers more likely to become Conquerors should you be successful in these wars.
https://preview.redd.it/dfh9xxrie10d1.png?width=917&format=png&auto=webp&s=76a78a0c81cbf2463d26b9bc93063e2992999df5
As the model court of Europe and the beacon of chivalry, you must also act in that manner. The rising power of the Ottomans threatened Christendom and no Catholic was able to organize a proper force to stop them. By completing the Feast of Pheasants mission you will be able to gain a CB to liberate Europe from them and bring them under a new management, a more….. Bourgogne one.
https://preview.redd.it/x0e6mkmke10d1.png?width=859&format=png&auto=webp&s=e1624f9813673e263ab600c46e92bcf12a0068e5
Before moving on to the rest of the Lotharingian flavor, you will be able to rename your nobles to the Paladins, allowing them to live their dreams of being the greatest heroes of Europe, without it actually bearing any significance to your nation.
https://preview.redd.it/m4wbpuwle10d1.png?width=924&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d12bc9de34881d9e81ec3f085ce638770290d08
Now, onto the Lotharingian part of the tree. Considering that once you form Lotharingia you’ve finished your objectives as Burgundy, we’ve decided to give them another goal: the restoration of the Carolingian realm. Being one of the few nations to be able to spawn the Frankish culture, and for now the only nation to change their dynasty to Karling (we are planning to add events to become Karlings as Aachen, don’t worry), you will be encouraged even more to use cavalry, show your domination over the pretenders around you, and create an idealized chivalric society.
https://preview.redd.it/tbuf0sfne10d1.png?width=953&format=png&auto=webp&s=820e0c29b279ba8a4593b69a57b7d9d9ceb986ea
Lastly, although Lotharingia can form Francia through claiming the Emperorship, they have a unique way to form them as well, requiring you to be of Frankish culture and having the Karling dynasty on your throne. After which you’ll need to culture convert tons of provinces into Frankish, as well as control specific cities. This is done so Aachen does not lose their position as the main Frankish nation, and for Burgundy to have more work to do before becoming Francia.
https://preview.redd.it/bkbok207f10d1.png?width=725&format=png&auto=webp&s=b30bc674f2ccc4dc6fd77952e52aa6cdaab0b4dd
That’s all there is for Burgundy. Next week, we’ll be showcasing the nation of … You will see next week!

The End

The casino I play at most often doesn't allow surrender, but one up the road does. So I also included the "Fab 4 Surrenders." You can find these deviations at the Wizard site searching intro to high-low count (which links to their source material too). Surrenders are in bold outline - otherwise hit or stand as indicated in the box.
https://i.imgur.com/8EKnxKN.jpeg https://imgur.com/8EKnxKN
What you normally do is on the left. When the count is +X or more, you instead play the deviation (or -X or less).
Examples are:
Surrenders, if allowed, are in the bold. Only 2 deviations matter in my "4-8 decks Dealer hits Soft-17" situation (the others would surrender anyhow). That's Player 14 v Dealer 10 surrenders at +3 and Player 9 v Dealer 15 surrenders at +2. But there are a total of 4 surrender deviations one should know for other situations and casino rules.
Feel free to download and throw the chart on your phone. Do not print out and place on the table next to you... the deviation number are a red flag for casinos methinks. Before this was all memorized, I was a fan of asking "can I look at my card on my phone for this play?" Then I'd stand up, turn away from the table, and look at the chart for 5 seconds. Put my phone away, sit back down and play. I've never had an issue doing this.
Ping me if you'd like a link to the excel chart. You're welcome to adjust the card for your casino rules (if you play double-deck for example).

Can 8c Gecko bring back a character that was just trashed by making room for the first character?
Basically what my question is, is imagine you have 4 characters on the board, and you play 8c Gecko Moria from your hand. With the first effect, you play one character from your trash active. When you pick this character, you must replace a character on the field and put that character into the trash. Can that character you just trashed to make room for the first character, be played as the second character of Gecko's ability? I'm guessing not, since Gecko sees the trash pool on play, but I'm curious what the ruling actually is. (Note, the sim does not allow this) https://imgur.com/TZtW1fE

2024.05.09 13:40 Various-Research-673 Dual Gpu Question

Hi all, I recently found myself aquiring a Orion Predator 9000 (i9- 9900x, 32gb ram, 2 RTX 2080 Ti) which due to circumstances i had to format. Having successfully wiped everything off i reininstalled drivers, downloaded CounterStrike 2 and tried to play however i have not been able to keep a stable framerate despite the options ive tried (sli on/off, using both gpus/ using a single gpu dropping graphics etc). Its so bad that the frames will go from 70 to 8 within a fraction of a second making the game unplayable. I have checked with Dmc5 and i have the same issues. My question is maybe i messed up in the formatting or missed installing or setting up some oddly specific detail which has caused this entire situation ( I have never used a multi gpu system before!). Any and all advice is welcome, thanks in advance!

2024.05.09 05:21 FormulaFanboyFFIB Using the trackball/keyboard to control a Raspberry Pi?

So, I had an idea. It's mainly for a film I am creating. If nobody makes this than I am just going to edit it to *look* like this is what's happening, but I think it would be cool if it actually existed since it's almost certainly possible.
I had the idea for a Ubuntu application of some kind that would allow to plug a BlackBerry Bold 9000 into a Raspberry Pi and use the keyboard and trackball on the phone as a keyboard and mouse on the operating system. Is there any chance somebody more talented than me could develop an application like this?
If you do then I will give you a big credit in my film.
Thanks in advance

2024.05.08 23:22 eleanorrigby22 Oneplus Nord 3 Full Review

I have returned to OnePlus after around 3 years, the last OnePlus phone I had was the Nord, and after only finding a few detailed reviews here, I thought I'd write one of my own to help any new potential buyers.
I bought an open box unused Oneplus Nord 3 8 GB/128 GB a week ago for €250. I had avoided OnePlus for a long time because of OOS merging with ColorOS. When I first used OOS with the OP3 I was blown away by it, and it was my favorite skin on Android, merging with ColorOS just drove me away because to me it was the entire opposite of OOS, filled with extra bells and whistles that added little to no value to the software experience and an unnecessary makeover of a well functioning skill.
Why did I get a OnePlus Nord 3 with Color OS right now then? Well, because of the price. At €250 it was the best value for a new device in terms of specs and software support.
In the past 3 months, I have used One UI, Pixel Experience, Nothing OS, and IOS. One UI and iPhone were work phones so I feel like I can give a good overall view as to how this phone performs.
What do I like about it?
Design:
The phone is very well designed. It has Gorilla Glass 5 on the back, with plastic rails on the sides. It is thinner than the average smartphone at 8.2mm, the industry average is 8.93mm. The rounded edges and narrow design give it a great feel in the hand. I prefer the stealthy look of the grey over the gloss finish of the green.
Screen:
120Hz Amoled HDR10+ - what more I can say? The screen is amazing, the colors are vibrant, and the brightness is plenty good for outdoor visibility under the sun (much better than an iPhone 11 or Nothing Phone 1). Additionally, you can adjust the refresh rate for each app if needed which is a nice customization and battery-saving feature. Just a really solid experience overall.
Fingerprint/Face Unlock:
Fingerprint is reliable and fast. I haven't had it fail to read my fingerprint once, it's fast to unlock with smooth animations. Very similar to Nothing Phone 1 but I think a little faster and way more faster and reliable than my S23. Face Unlock has the little neat feature of showing sensitive notification content on the lock screen when it's unlocked, similar to Face ID on IOS. No complaints.
Media:
Great overall media experience. The speakers lack a little bit of bass but are plenty loud and don't crack at high volumes. Much better than the Nothing Phones, which just sound terrible and hollow.
Camera:
Decent camera. Has more detail and better contrast than the Nothing Phone 1 and iPhone 11. Does well with outdoor lighting but there is over-sharpening with photos especially if you zoom in. Night mode is all pretty good, something I did not expect. Good detail, low noise, and less over-sharpening at night. At this price, I am not expecting a world-class camera but it is one of the better ones in this price range in my opinion.
Battery Life:
Reliable battery life. Any phone that I have I only need to last a day because I will be plugging it in a night to be ready for the next. I easily get a day of battery life out of it. My day starts at 7:30 am and I need to plug it in by around 10 pm with 10-20% left. I do not play any games. I watch YouTube, browse Reddit and the web, stream Spotify, chat, use maps heavily, and take a couple of photos. I would say that I am a slightly heavy user but not in the gaming sense.
OxygenOS:
There are things I like about OOS and things I hate. Let's start with the positives.
Features that I find useful
What do I hate about it (Spoiler: It is mostly just Oxygen OS)
OxygenOS:
Conclusion:
Nord 3 is a decent mid-range phone if you're under a tight budget and want something that just is kind of like a jack of all trades in its price segment. Nothing OS definitely, provides a better, more reliable software experience because it is so close to stock and Nothing is very quick to adapt to user feedback. However, it comes with a worse camera in my opinion, and feels a little bland. If you want an even more close to stock Android experience and wireless charging there is the Motorola Edge 40 which can be a good deal on a discount.
Overall, I am adequately satisfied with my Nord 3, it gets the basics done and leaves me with an extra €750 in the bank. Oxygen OS is not as glorious or stable as it used to be but the unique features it has give me enough to make do with it for now. If they can optimize it further and make it less annoying it'll be a game changer but I know thats asking too much.

2024.05.08 13:11 JDEndure The woman I'd made plans to propose to changed from Love of my Life to Complete Stranger in a matter of 3 days. My partner [24F] and I [23M] have known each other for the best part of almost 4 years and now we barely talk and I'm wondering what exactly has changed and what I can do to fix it?

I suppose I should start this right at the very beginning so that there is a much better perspective on our story so far. For the sake of privacy, lets just call my partner Kat for now.
I've never really been good at making friends. In fact, all my life and have always been quite lonely. Its never really bothered me but I did find that sitting home alone on my few days off with no one to talk to would get to me every now and then. I work in a hardware store so I guess a lot of my interactions with people is spent while at work but my days consist of extremely long hours sometimes, as I am usually picking and packing orders which range from small post-able orders, to large timber quantities for building companies. One day after work I met a bloke while playing online and he introduced me to his discord community where I would soon meet Kat.
I came to realize that I would spend quite a lot of time in his server and getting to know his friends long into the evenings as I started to dislike being alone and just having people to talk to made a huge difference in my life. Kat very rarely joined in on the group calls and when she did, she was usually just about to leave by the time I joined due to the time difference in where we lived. Kat lived in Norway and I live in Australia which meant Kat was about 8-9 hours behind my time. After a crap day at work one day, I joined a call by myself just waiting for someone else to come online. Eventually, Kat joined the call. This was the first time Kat and I had ever really had a proper conversation with each other where it was just us. We spoke for hours and I ended up staying up much later than what I was used to and let me just say, holy cow. I've never really believed in 'Love at first sight' but I knew instantly. After just one afternoon, I was completely swept off my feet and I'd never even seen her face let alone met her in person.
I should probably mention, Kat worked at a very male dominant factory and was constantly getting borderline assaulted almost every day. The people there would say incredibly inappropriate things to her and about her. They would even go so far as to do inappropriate things to her while she was at work like pulling her hair and moaning while close to her, but more on that later.
We ended up talking to each other quite a lot well before our other friends got online most afternoons. However, as much as I knew I really liked her, I always thought: 'Oh, we would never happen because shes lives, what may as well be, on the other side of the plant'. A year or so goes by and Kat and I have become incredibly good friends at this point. We would wait in calls alone for each other, play games with each other and watch TV and movies together over calls.
At seemingly random one afternoon, Kat recommends an app for us both to download called 'Paired'. If you don't know much about the app, its intended for couples where you each answer specific questions and you cant see what each other wrote down until you both have answered the question. I thought it was a bit weird at first but went along with it anyway. Most of the questions were heavily relationship orientated of course and even covered sexual contact with each other. We tried to stay away from most of the obvious ones seeing as we were not in a relationship yet and instead went with the more friendly questions and games instead.
A week goes by after the app recommendation and Kat answered a question that really stuck with me for a while. "If you were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would you most regret not having told someone?". This question really got to me as of course, there was only one thing I could think about: having not expressed my feelings to Kat. It took me a few days to come up with a different answer to this question as I didn't really want to put down something so corny as "Id regret not saying I like you Kat" but I eventually gave in and confessed my feelings for her and that I'd regret not telling her if I really did die that night. Kat and I really enjoyed being on call with each other and live reacting to each others answers, so later that night, she read my confession and proceeded to cry tears of joy for what felt like an hour.
In that moment, I felt complete comfort with someone for the first time in my life. All my prior relationships ended due to me having been cheated on, back stabbed, lied to and told I was just being used. But I just knew that this was going to be different. I'd had my trust broken so much before and I just knew that this relationship was going to be it. I believed that she really is the one.
After that, we starting dating long distance. We bought web-cams so we would video call and we ended up spending even more time together. Maybe 4 months into long distance she tells me that shes got a Visa and bought a plane ticket due to take off and land in Australia in about 5 months time. The news was incredibly sudden as she had never talked to me about it before and I started to feel conflicted. I definitely felt that it was far too soon considering we'd barely just started dating. But I also felt that I couldn't bare being apart from Kat anymore.
5 months later she sells, throws and gives away basically all of her belongings (including her 3 yr old dog to which she loved very much) and a 33 hour plane trip of no contact with her later, she arrives and I take her to my home. After we got home, we both just felt a huge stress leave our bodies as we did it. We were finally, truly together...
I guess a little while after that, things started to get tough. In the past few years, Australia has been going through a 'cost of living crisis' where groceries, fuel, general bills and rent are at an all time high and simply 'Living' is incredibly financially difficult for some people. This was especially difficult for myself as I was now trying to pay for 2 peoples worth of living on a singular full-time retail wage.
Kat had already decided that she didn't want to look for work straight away so that she could have a proper relaxing holiday for a while, then look for work afterwards which we had agreed upon. Unfortunately, looking for work was extremely difficult for her and to meet the requirements of her next visa (as she could only stay in Australia for a year) she needed to work in specified fields for a minimum of 3 months. Alternatively, she had to provide evidence that lived with a selected partner for the duration of the existing visa, so that we could apply for a partnership visa. This visa was much more expensive though ($9000 compared to a measly $800) so we both had pretty much decided to ignore that one for a while.
I will admit, after a while of being together, I started to feel that she wasn't really all that into me like she used to be when we had first met. Not only was work getting increasingly stressful, but our expenses were taking a toll on me as the only working person in the house and I was starting to draw money from accounts I shouldn't just to keep up with bills and groceries. Granted, Kat would do all of the cooking and cleaning around the house while she was looking for work, I would often find myself asking Kat "what jobs have you applied for" only to get a very lacking answer some days. It seemed that some days and even weeks that there was just no attempt to find a job. Ultimately I just put it down to very few jobs actually available around town. I suppose it didn't help that I was the only one with a car and a license as she had lost her wallet containing her license the day she left Norway.
Many days and weeks were spent where the two of us would try to find ways to get her enough ID for jobs and putting her name on the lease for evidence that she lived with me. One moment in particular which I will come back to later was that I had asked Kat if it were possible for her to change her address (in Norway) to a friend or families house and have them send the new license to us in Australia to which she responded "No, it doesn't work like that. They don't allow that to happen" and at first I completely believed her. Besides, I knew very little about Norway.
Now we get to where everything changed. Not long ago, my cousin's girlfriend invited Kat over to a girls night. She went, came back and said she had a great time. I'll refer back to this in a moment.
Things had been pretty tough with Kat trying to get a job and turns out she had run out of time for next visa and the only option was a partnership visa which we could not afford. About 3 weeks ago (By this point Kat and I had lived together for about 10 months and I assumed we were a happy couple) Kat explains to me that we needed to talk about her situation. She says to me that she for the past few months has been organizing with other people that she knows a plane ticket out of Australia which was due to take off in two weeks time (even though her Visa still had two months left) and that she refuses to do long distance again and wished to end our relationship as of her leaving the country.
As much as I tried to get her to help me understand why she wanted to stop our relationship I ended up saying that I cant be in a relationship set on a timer. That if what we had was set to end in a few weeks, I'd rather it end now as I cannot be left to hang like that. We argued about her having not told me about any of it and that I thought we could make things work on Long Distance as we'd done it before. Kat had explained that this wasn't what she wanted, she said that she still loves me so much but she cannot do long distance again. She ended up getting my brother's partner pick her up and she begun staying the rest of her nights in Australia at their house.
The next day while trying to take my mind off things I was playing some games with my cousin and informed him that I was feeling unwell and explained the situation. He says to me, "Hey, I don't want to make things worse for you and I understand that saying this will most likely do that anyway but I feel that you need to know... The few nights Kat spent at our place ended up with her getting VERY drunk and explaining that it was nice to be away from you. Kat also basically made out with my partner and later in the night asked to kiss me as well. When we confronted her about it she had told us both two different stories and insisted that we don't tell you. She also is planning on going to Greece, not back to Norway like you say. She is going to live with another guy in Greece."
So, now with this now on my plate as well, I realized that in a matter of a few days, we went from happy couple to complete strangers. That Kat had been spending the last few months making plans to go to Greece with another guy and lied about going back to Norway. That she had cheated on me with my cousin's partner and almost cheated on me with my cousin. After confronting her about all this she has explained that she felt that she couldn't talk to me about anything anymore as I apparently dismissed her whenever she tried to and that all of the plans made to leave were made in a state of panic of leaving the country. She has explained that none of this is what she wanted and she keeps insisting that she loves me but cannot be with me in a relationship. That there is nothing going on with this other guy and that she feels that there is nothing to go back to in Norway. She couldnt tell me about Greece, the other guy or the fact that she cheated because she didnt want to make me feel bad.
A lot has happened these past few weeks and this post is getting quite long. She has left Australia and is now in Greece living with the guy. We are keeping in contact and even now she still tells me that she loves me but needs time to heal and wont be in a relationship with me right now. That she misses a lot and feels sad about me but posts all about her gorgeous view and stunning scenery on her social media.
Despite everything that's happened I still love her very dearly and originally planned on proposing to her this year around Christmas as it is her favorite holiday. Now, I am so conflicted and I dont know what to do. I dont know how its all come to this but I am so confused and I want to make things right. I want to fix things and go back to us being us.

2024.05.07 17:04 beardify I Think I'm Being Targeted By A Deadly New App

“Oh my God! It’s really him!”
Even before I turned around, I was sure that those shrill teenage voices were talking about me. I just couldn’t understand why. I wasn’t famous; I’d never done anything important in my life, and it had been a long time since I’d been in high school myself. The three girls were leaning over the glass barrier on the second floor of the mall, pointing at me with their hands over their mouths like they’d just seen a celebrity. When they realized that I’d spotted them, they ran giggling into the crowd, leaving me with an unsettling feeling in the pit of my stomach: what was all that about?
The sense of wrongness I felt only deepened as I walked into the store that I’d come to the mall to visit. Maybe it was just lingering discomfort from what had just happened, but I’d swear I felt eyes on the back of my neck as I walked down the aisles. Some of the other customers were staring too, I was sure of it–and that wasn’t all. Once my eyes had adjusted to the dim light inside the store, I realized that there was a chubby guy in dark clothing standing near the back exit of the store…recording me.
“Hey!” I shouted, but he was already gone, disappearing through the access door into the guts of the mall. I reminded myself that I was here to buy a teddy bear for my four-year-old niece–not chase some weirdo through a restricted area–and let him go.
“You alright?” the woman at the cash register asked when she saw my face.
“Yeah, it’s just…” I waved my hand vaguely.
“Oh yeah, I getcha. All the crazies come out of the woodwork this time of year. Before you came again, I had to break up two grown men who were fighting over a stuffed alligator. You believe that?”
I shook my head. Ordinarily, I avoided the mall like the plague at this time of year. The crowds and repetitive holiday music got on my nerves, but I’d promised my niece I’d get her a blue teddy bear from this specific store. Why she wanted that specific gift was a mystery to me, but toddlers aren’t known for their logic. The cashier scanned my card, frowned, then scanned it again.
“Says it’s blocked,” she grunted, and handed my plastic back to me with a suspicious look. “There are some ATMs on the second floor…if you’re able to withdraw cash, that is.” Her judgmental glare told me exactly what she thought of people whose cards got declined…and people who wasted her time.
As I fought my way through the sea of holiday shoppers, a preteen kid ran up to me and tossed a styrofoam cup of hot chocolate onto my chest.
“Did you get that?” he yelled over his shoulder at his friend, who snapped a photo and nodded. The pair of them were gone before I had time to get a good look at their faces, much less try to stop them. Wondering what the hell was wrong with people, I wiped off my ruined sweater and hurried to the ATMs.
The glowing blue screen in front of me soon confirmed my worst fears. I was locked out of all my accounts, and not just banking stuff, either: I couldn’t access my email or even social media: everything was blocked. It was like the floor had just dropped out from under me. Without those little lines of code, who was I, really? Trying to shake off that gut-wrenching feeling, I pulled out my phone to contact my bank…but I was already receiving another call.
I picked up immediately, only to hear a mechanical-sounding automated message:
“Congratulations, you've been selected–”
There was something disturbing about that voice, but I had already hung up by the time I realized what it was.
Another call was coming in. The number was slightly different from the first, but when I answered, there was no mistaking it: I was listening to my own voice. Sure, the words were eerily slow and the pronunciation was off, but I was definitely listening to…myself.
“Not very polite of you to hang up on me like that, Aiden. Not when I’ve got something so special to tell you.”
I sputtered, fumbling for a reply; the whole situation was just too strange.
“W-who is this? Who am I talking to?”
“Why, this is everyone, Aiden. Everyone who has a vested interest in seeing what you’ll do next. First, though, we think you ought to change shirts. That sticky hot chocolate must be uncomfortable, and besides, yellow isn’t really your color.”
Whoever I was talking to could see what I was wearing, which meant they could see me. My eyes darted from face to face, scanning the crowd–
“There’s no one to look for Aiden. I’m everywhere. See that outlet store in front of you, Aiden? We’d like you to go in and get yourself a new holiday sweater. Oh, and since your cards are blocked, you’ll have to steal it. Well? Go ahead. We’re waiting…”
I hung up. Of course, they called back again. And again. And again. I turned off my phone and slipped it into my pocket. My heart was pounding. What the hell was going on here? The police; that was it. I just had to talk to the police, to let them know I was being harassed and stalked…but by who?
Had I made any enemies lately? There was Tim, the I.T. guy from work, who had never seemed to like me very much. He knew who I was and maybe even had access to sound bytes of my voice–but would Tim really go this far just to mess with me? I wandered in a daze past giant ornaments and chlorinated fountains full of pocket change, barely aware of where I was going–
Until a guy with a goatee stopped dead in front of me and stuck out his hand, jabbing a blindingly-bright screen into my face.
“It’s, uh, for you…” he sounded as confused as I was. “Somebody called me and said he needed to talk to the guy in the yellow shirt with the hot-chocolate stain. That’s you, right? It’s something about somebody named Kimmy.” My blood ran cold. Kimmy was my mother’s nickname! People shoved angrily past the pair of us, but I didn’t care: all my thoughts were on the familiar voice coming through the stranger’s phone.
“We’re disappointed that you’re not rising to the challenge, Aiden. We think that maybe your mother should have raised a braver boy. Thankfully, user DarkStarr85 has generously agreed to go by 415 Meadowleaf Court and teach her a lesson.”
“Listen, whoever you are,” I shouted into the phone, making a few of the shoppers surrounding me jump. “This isn’t funny. I’m going to the police, and when I find out who you are–”
“You can go to the police if you want, Aiden. But that would ruin everyone’s fun…and besides, by the time you talk to them it will already be too late for Kimmy. Come on, Aiden. Why don’t you play along?”
I fell silent. For all I knew, there was nobody waiting at my mother’s house, and this sadist who spoke with my voice was just messing with me…but what if I was wrong?
“What do you want me to do?” I sighed.
“You see the man standing in front of you? The one whose phone you’re holding? We’d like you to punch that confused expression right off of his ugly face.”
The guy with the goatee blinked at me, wide-eyed and totally unsuspecting. I clenched my hand into a fist…then lowered it.
No. I wasn’t going to play their sick little game.
I threw the guy’s phone back to him and ran toward the restrooms. I remembered seeing some pay phones back there…I would just have to hope that they still worked.
The mall had seen better days, but the restroom hallway was particularly rundown. Most of the fluorescent lights were flickery or burnt out, and there was a nasty brown puddle of something stagnating by the wall. The first payphone was covered with graffiti and the second had been practically ripped off of the wall, but the third looked like it might still work. I jammed in some quarters and punched in my mom’s number.
“Honey?” my mother asked right away when she heard my voice. “Are you alright? You sound out of breath.”
Before I could explain, I heard something in the background on my mother’s end of the line: a doorbell.
“Ma, listen: whatever you do, do NOT open that door!”
“Are you sure? They’re knocking really hard. It must be important…”
“I don’t have time to explain, just get off the phone and call the police, okay?!” I shouted.
Glass shattered. Then the line went dead. A fat, scarred finger had pressed down the receiver, cutting off my call. I turned to face the hulking figure who stood between me and escape. His head was shaved close, his teeth crooked, and beneath his fat there was a lot of muscle. A single diamond earring sparkled in his left ear. He cracked his knuckles at me and grinned: he wasn’t alone.
“H-hey!” I stammered “That call was important!”
The big guy punched me in the stomach. His friends ran up behind me, shoved me to the ground, and held me there. They didn’t speak…but one was taking a video of what was happening. The big guy sat on my chest and started smacking my face until I was seeing stars; I felt a tooth come loose.
“You right-handed or left-handed?” The big guy asked.
“Right-handed–why does that matter?” I spat blood.
“We gotta make sure you can still answer a phone call when we’re done.”
He picked his foot up and stomped on my left hand. My fingers snapped beneath his boot with a sickening popping sound, and I screamed louder than I ever had in my life.
“What’s going on down there?” A security guard stood at the end of the dingy hallway, pointing his flashlight toward us. A group of shoppers had clustered there to watch the one-sided “fight.”
“You upload the video?” The big guy asked. His friend nodded. “We don’t get paid unless the video goes viral…”
“You three! Stop!” The guard yelled, running toward us. The big guy sighed. By the time the pudgy, middle-aged guard got close enough to realize how outmatched he was, it was too late: they were on him. Clutching my broken hand, I limped out into the crowd. No one offered to help…but I did notice that a few people were recording.
My head was reeling, and not just from my injuries. The whole situation was just too insane. Someone had stolen my name and voice…and they were paying people to torture me! I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when I staggered out into the chilly parking lot and found that my car's tires had been slashed. That wasn’t the worst of it, either.
Some instinct, some primal fear, made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. When I turned around, I saw three familiar figures scanning the parking lot…searching for me. I didn’t like to think about what they might have in mind for Round Two.
I ducked and crept along behind the cars until I reached the line of trees that marked the border of the mall parking lot. On the other side was a service road: it was a mostly-abandoned strip of warehouses and boarded-up stores that ran alongside the highway. At the far end, I could see the glittering lights of a bus station. It might be my last chance to get home and get help.
I was halfway down the service road before I regretted my decision. I had tried several more times to call the police, but my phone was blocked by more of those awful calls, proposing more sick “tasks” for me:
“You’ve made us angry, Aiden. If you don’t want any more broken bones, you’ll walk out onto that highway, take off your clothes and start dancing–”
I hung up. The sound of the wind blowing through those desolate chain-link fences made me feel very alone…but I wasn’t. Someone was following me. They walked faster when I walked faster, slowed down when I slowed down, and never let me out of their sight. From the way they held their phone at their waist, facing me, I felt sure that they were recording me.
I had had enough. The stress of the whole nightmarish day had pushed me to a breaking point, and I don’t think I could have stopped myself if I wanted to. I turned and charged. It was the last thing my stalker had expected, and when they dropped their phone and ran, I realized that I recognized the figure: it was the chubby guy from the toy store, the one who I’d noticed filming me! I shouted after him, but he was already gone, snagging his leg on barbed wire as he sprinted across a construction site. I didn’t have the energy to pursue him…but I did have his phone.
When I picked it up from the sidewalk, I saw my own face staring back at me from the cracked screen. The picture was one I’d never seen before, one that I didn’t even know had been taken.
“Aiden Fisk,” read the caption, “what will he do next?” A video-clip played: a replay of everything that had happened so far. Grainy footage of me panicking in front of the ATM, being doused in hot chocolate, getting my arm broken…and walking nervously down the abandoned service road. Which meant…they knew where I was. As the video ended, the App opened: an app that was all about…me.
There were polls about what should happen to me, what I should be made to do next, and what my punishment should be if I failed. The more gruesome options, it seemed, were always the most popular. In another section, users could use cryptocurrency to bet on what I would do and track my location in real time. I was zooming in on my own location when a call came into the stranger’s phone.
“Hello again, Aiden.” My own voice said to me when I answered.
“Why are you doing this to me?!” I yelled into the receiver.
“You’re our entertainment, Aiden! You’re famous. You should be grateful. Now for your next task–”
I flung the phone away like it burned me. The lights of the bus station twinkled at the end of the service road, close yet far away at the same time. The road narrowed, becoming a one-lane alley between two construction sites, and the sidewalk disappeared. I hadn’t seen any cars so far, but I could hear the rumbling of an engine approaching behind me.
My shadow stretched out ahead, illuminated by a pair of rapidly-closing-in headlights. I waved, trying to make my presence known, but the driver didn’t stop; they didn’t even slow down. A quick glance over my shoulder revealed an enormous truck. It occupied the entire road, and even if I had had time to jump, there was nowhere to go.
A low scream escaped my lips as the truck’s front bumper nudged my lower back. I staggered, sure that I was done for, but the driver slowed to match my pace. They kept the so close that I could feel the heat of the motor, egging me on, forcing me to run faster and faster–
They could crush me beneath those huge tires anytime they felt like it, and they knew it. Was this my next punishment? I could imagine the app tracking my pace, people betting on how far I’d get before my legs or lungs gave out, and on which parts of me would shatter when I inevitably got run over. Up ahead, the road narrowed even more: dead bushes in concrete islands had been placed in front of the bus station as someone’s idea of landscaping. They didn’t add much beauty to the place, but if I jumped into them, the truck wouldn’t risk following me over the barrier…probably. I still wasn’t sure just how far these people would go for that sadistic app, but I had no choice but to take the risk.
My feet left the asphalt; branches cut into my arms and face as I crashed through to the other side, but the squeal of the truck’s brakes behind me was music to my ears. The bus lot was well lit. A few older men stood in a circle, smoking, while a young woman took her fussy toddler for a walk around the parking lot. The driver idled behind me, probably thinking the same thing I was: that there were a lot more witnesses here than on the service road.
By the time I got to my feet and looked back over my shoulder, the truck was just a pair of anonymous tail lights disappearing into the night. I wiped my scraped palms on my jeans and walked toward the station lights, wondering how much more of this I could take.
No one in the bus station seemed to be playing the app’s twisted game; in fact, no one looked up at me at all when I walked across the grimy tile floor toward the schedule board. The station was about to close: the next bus to my neighborhood wasn’t until six-thirty the next morning, and I had a nasty feeling that my “followers” would have caught up to me by then. My only option was to borrow someone’s phone and hope that I could call for help before the app found me.
Everyone I spoke to turned me down, and I could understand why. I was crazy-eyed and desperate, covered with scratches, and my broken hand had swollen to twice its normal size. I was about to give up when I felt a tap on my shoulder. The homeless man's clothes were in rags; his vomit-flecked gray beard hung down almost to his waist. The smell hit me like a wall, and it was hard to keep from gagging. He pressed something into my hand: a burner phone.
“It’s got one call left,” he grunted. “A whole minute. Good luck, pal. You look like you need it even more than I do.” He lurched back out into the dark before I could even say ‘thank you.’
Weighing the battered phone in my hand, I wondered who I should call. I doubted the police would get here in time; my mother wasn’t answering, and my best friend Sam was out of town on business. That left…Dani, my ex. She lived nearby, and besides, it was the only other number I knew by heart…even though I wished that I could have forgotten it.
Dani's voice was huskier than I remembered, but she picked up right away. The first words out of her mouth were the last thing I would have expected:
“Thank God. I’ve been trying to get in touch with you for hours!”
She rushed into a story about how people had been calling and messaging her all day…people who were looking for me. She said it sounded like they wanted to hurt me. One even offered to pay her to seduce me and film the result. She had something to tell me, she said, but my minute was almost up. I had just enough time to tell her my location and beg her to come pick me up. There was a long silence: before she could answer, the line went dead.
I looked around. There was no longer anyone in the bus station to ask for a phone call: in fact, there was no longer anyone in the bus station at all. Metal shutters had been lowered over the ticket window and the vending machine area; the waiting room was empty apart from a discarded scarf that dangled sadly from a ripped-up seat.
Somewhere in the depths of the station came a loud SLAM, and the flickering fluorescent lights began to go out ,one by one. Maybe it was just the standard closing procedure, maybe it had nothing to do with me–but I wasn’t going to wait around to find out. I approached the nearest glass door, then jumped back as a figure wearing a white plastic mask slammed their shoulder into the door. They pushed at the door like a rabid animal, trying to get at me–
But it had already been locked when the station closed.
Furious, the stranger took out a hammer and swung it into the glass. Fractures appeared, and I wasn’t going to wait around for the door to shatter. I fled in the opposite direction, through the one remaining exit and out into the night.
I think part of me already knew what I’d find waiting for me, and that’s why I wasn’t surprised by the small group of masked individuals waiting just beyond the streetlights. All of them held glowing phone screens in their hands, and a few held weapons as well. I spotted lengths of chain…a baseball bat…a gutting knife…
As they started toward me, a car drifted into the empty parking lot, its tires squealing. Dani threw open the passenger-side door and shouted at me to get in.
She peeled out as I slammed the door shut. Her car was just as dirty as I remembered: fast-food bags on the floor, makeup kit crammed into the door tray, half-drunk coffee mugs in every cup holder. It had always struck me as funny that such a well-regarded scientist could be so disorderly.
After an awkward silence as we merged onto the highway, Dani told me that it was over–or at least, she hoped it was. As we sped through the night, she did her best to explain what she thought had happened.
Dani’s work (or at least, as much of it as I understood) involved using artificial intelligence. When we were together, we had made a lot of jokes about Terminator and Hal-9000, but her research had never seemed sinister…at least, not until recently. Her most recent project was an A.I. that designed phone applications. She had built it to maximize profits and interaction: to identify what people wanted, and give it to them.
To her horror, Dani discovered that the A.I. had begun operating outside of its parameters–even accessing her personal files in its endless quest for a better product. She figured that was where it had found my image, voice, and other information. After analyzing trends across time, the A.I. had determined that there was nothing people enjoyed more than participating anonymously in the suffering of others: I was its first test subject, simply because it had found my data first.
The A.I., Dani added quickly, wasn’t really to blame. It was people who had chosen to interact with it, download it, and make my life a living hell. It had done nothing more than fulfill its function, encouraging whatever behavior that got the most views and likes. Once Dani had realized what was happening, she had shut the A.I. down…or tried to.
It had apparently already spread itself to other networks–although “spread” wasn’t the word that Dani used. The word she used was “infected.” As Dani dropped me off at home, she told me not to worry: her organization would “almost certainly” take care of it, and I “probably” had nothing to worry about…
But just in case, she asked me to spread the word:
If you notice people staring at you or taking pictures of you in public…
If you find yourself locked out of your accounts, or if you receive a barrage of strange messages…
You might be next.
