2024.05.04 20:08 HossAcross Some DAFT Realities to Mix w/the Misinformation and Generalizations. Hope it Helps!

Lots of broad generalizations and out of date info about DAFT on reddit. I highly recommend anyone looking into doing this join the DAFT Hub fb group. There's still plenty of "I heard on the internet..." type advice but overall it's pretty solid on this topic and a good group, very useful.
Hope that gives some useful context to my perspective on DAFT and life in NL.
  1. A ZZP is basically analogous to a sole proprietorship in the U.S., most DAFTers do this and honestly, you can do it all on your own, the process is simple and no need for a lawyer BUT do your homework and prepare your finances, try out your self-employment model before getting here, esp. if you haven't been self-employed before or don't have any biz exp. Do not simply plan on doing this with an employer back home as your income source.
  2. There's a cottage industry of DAFT holders whose DAFT biz is advising others on DAFT. Totally ok and can be useful for some but be aware of this.
  3. A BV is the only way to get the 30% tax ruling and it is much more complex and expensive than both a ZZP or the U.S. equivalent of a BV, an LLC. A BV will require professional assistance to set up and quite a bit of work and expense to maintain.
  4. To restate the above, there is no simple 30% discount on Dutch taxes, a BV is really nothing like a U.S. LLC, a BV will make any existing/continuing U.S. assets and business activity more legally and financially complex.
  5. Approval is basically guaranteed as long as you meet the basic requirements. The number of DAFT holders isn't high. Renewal is easy BUT many people never make it to 2 yrs due to a mix of cultural fatigue, failure to support themselves or change in life plans.
  6. I live in Limburg so it's very different than the Ranstad (be sure to learn the regions!) but housing is an issue in NL. You will have to secure a lease BEFORE applying for your visa so good luck. Remember, you will have no right to live in the country at the time, no income/unemployed (in landlord's eyes) and likely not speak Dutch while competing with many Dutchies, other EU people and permanent employment contract holders for a place. Take that into account.
  7. There is no requirement for income or profitability at renewal, unlike some advice on reddit and fb. The only thing IND requires to renew your DAFT visa (ZZP) for 5yrs is a basic P&L statement and proof that you maintained €4500 in your business bank account while on DAFT. I have had a Dutch accountant do my qtrly reporting for me the entire time and that simplified things for my renewal but I processed the actual renewal myself.
  8. Smaller numbers make it past 2yrs or to permanent residency due to the above "self-selecting out" factors, few would ever give up U.S. citizenship for a Dutch passport. This is not the U.S., Dutch citizenship does not mean you will ever be considered Dutch. E.g. Indonesian-Dutch and people from the ABC islands living here are not often treated as "Dutch". This does not mean you can't make a good life here but be aware of that. Also, the same is pretty true throughout the EU.
  9. NL is about as good as it gets for managing administrative business as an English speaking expat. Although you should learn Dutch to at least A1/2 level out of respect and to help your life during those first 2 yrs. You can do most everything online and in English e.g. DAFT application/renewal, gemeente, mobile, internet, etc., select English on websites, politely (in Dutch) ask for English when speaking to cs on the phone. Things are orderly and just work. I am not saying this is in all situations and the more Dutch you have, def. the better but compared to FR and BE where I spoke B1 French and dealt with shit-show administrative headaches, it's paradise.
  10. Healthcare is very reasonably priced but also very hands-off. A lot of preventative healthcare Americans are accustomed to are simply not the norm here (like annual comprehensive physical exams). I am mostly told just to "see if it gets worse" when going to the doctor for feeling unwell. I once had a suspicious mole on my skin. My Dutch doctor had never had a black patient and told me not to worry about it while glancing at it from across her desk. Had it checked in the U.S. and it was an issue (though non-cancerous). The better health outcomes people sometimes talk about on reddit in comparison to the U.S. are mostly due to different lifestyle, healthier diet/fewer chemicals and preservatives, work-life balance, social support and data on homogenous populations. Not magically better medicine. I worked in the EU public health sector previously and spent a lot of time in my work looking at this issue. Yes, the U.S. health system is fucked up but the U.S. has a more diverse population than NL or anywhere in the EU in every way and health outcomes can't compete even if all problems were fixed.
  11. Dutch Tolerance and Race: NL is tolerant, I would never say inclusive in the way Americans may define that. Tolerant is about as good as it gets in the EU. I love it here but understand that these countries are not multicultural melting pots, all have their origins as mostly homogeneous ethno-states and that largely defines identity for many in all the EU countries. It's complicated but I experience racism here (and I'm not just talking about zwarte piet) despite also being treated as a "model minority". Africans, muslims, many asians for example can often get it worst. There is a lot of behavior that many Europeans consider ok that even a non-progressive American would find offensive or patronizing. Good to not generalize the place as a racial Utopia. Tolerance means you are tolerated.
  12. Education: Not just NL but basically all western Euro countries have what Americans would consider extremely tracked education. You need to research this if you have kids. It will be decided in adolescence whether or not your child can go to college. In high school it will be decided what quality of college and career they will have and this is much firmelonger lasting than the U.S., people have a place and mostly stay in that place for life once it's determined for them. There are varying degrees of opportunity to adjust this later in life. I'm generalizing but the education is nothing like our U.S. philosophy and that can be both positive and negative depending on you and your family. Studies show that non-white children are mostly recommended for non-academic career paths in NL, so again. do your research.
doe normal, dat is al gek genoeg!
Hope this long-ass post was helpful/interesting! 😂

2024.04.30 21:29 comediehero Help me build a 1500 euro cozy gaming PC for my girlfriend

My girlfriend and I love playing videogames. We have a PS5, Switch and two steamdecks. My girlfriend really enjoys Indie games on her steamdeck but also wants to be able to play the new games AAA that come out. Unfortunatly the old gaming PC she has is coming op on ten years of age now. So i wanna help her build a new one. I have some experience building computers but not a lot with picking parts. I find it specifically difficult since she wants it to be small and I don't have experience with small form factors. Below are the specs: >**What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.** She plays games like Stardew Valley, Hogwarts Legay, Gotham knights, Baldurs Gate 3, Red Dead redemption and Indie Games. She wants to be able to play AAA games up to 3 years down the line comfortably. (playable means 60FPS) She would also like to be able to use Blender and photoshop at the hobbiest level. >**What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?** 1500 Euros >**When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.** Right now. >**What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)** Just the tower, She has all the peripherals. >**Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?** Belgium (Limburg). >**If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.** She will be reusing her existing 1080p 60Hz monitor. She may want a better one in the future but not right now. A good recommendation for a simple 1440p High refresh rate gaming monitor is always appreciated but does not have to fit in the budget. >**Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?** No >**Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)** Just a normal 1TB SSD will be fine. >**Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?** Yes she wants a case that is much smaller then her current mid tower. She generally likes a minimalist design and wants the PC to fit in with her future cozy gamer girl setup. She doesn't really appreciate RGB Rainbow vomit but does like a subtle pink or green tint on a white PC build for example. So either a case with no RGB or a tastefull white one where she has the option to turn the lights off, because she can become overstimulated sometimes. Although I have no experience with an ITX form factor I am willing to try it. But one of the small ATX formats is also okay. >**Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?** No. >**Extra info or particulars:** If possible some recommendation for either a small docking station or a KVM switch. She also works from home on a company issued Dell laptop, the laptop has Thunderbolt 4. And she wants to be able to switch between them without messing with cables

2024.04.05 13:10 WeirdBeginning8869 Terminology of the word "Flanders"

A friend of mine sent me an article written in French about the terminology of the word "Flanders", which I found interesting: https://fr-academic.com/dic.nsf/frwiki/1933607#Les_Flandres_ethniques
Some part are not well documented, and I skipped some (like the geography one) because its a bit of a pain to translate with all the images and everything. If you have some additional content, please feel free.
I'm curious to see what you think of this.
"Flanders" or "Les Flandres" is a toponym that has given rise to confusion and debate due to its multiple uses over time to define geographically, politically, historically, linguistically and ethnically different areas. Successive occupiers of this territory have used the same names for different entities and different forms of a single entity, resulting in differing perceptions for both its inhabitants and outsiders.
Historically, the region has been marked by the continual political changes in the history of the historic region of the Netherlands. Geographically, there is no clear definition of the region, and the names of the sub-divisions are not unanimously accepted either by academics or by its own inhabitants. Ethnically, the area is inhabited mainly by three groups. Two of these define themselves as "Flemish":
  • Flemings of the Dutch language group, spread across three countries (France, Belgium and the Netherlands)
  • The Flemings of the French language group, living in France, who thus distinguish themselves from the third group, living in Belgium.
The latter prefer to conceal their Flemish origins and define themselves as :
  • The Picards, according to the name of their dialect, more on the French side
  • Walloons or Hainuyers, more on the Belgian side.
Linguistically, the names and origins of the languages spoken in the area are the subject of great controversy, while in the political sphere, the use of the name Flanders generates passionate debate, with nationalist groups wishing to impose its exclusive use.

Cultural division

Linguistic Flanders
Flanders has been distinguished linguistically according to whether the regions used Dutch or French dialects. For the southern part, which uses French-speaking dialects, several successive names have been used; although apparently different, they are in fact synonymous:
  • Gallo-Flandriæ; translated into French as :
  • Gallic Flanders or
  • Walloon Flanders
Names in local languages and dialects
  • German Flandern
  • English Flanders
  • Spanish Flanders
  • West Flemish Vloandern
  • East Flemish Vloandern
  • French Flemish Vlaenderen
  • French Flandres, Flandre
  • Riparian Francique Flanndere
  • West Frisian Flaanderen
  • Limburg Flemish Vlaandere
  • Luxembourgish Flandern
  • Dutch Vlaanderen
  • Picard Flindes, Flinde
  • Walloon Flande
  • Zeeland Vlaonderen
Origin of the root Walh The Frankish term Walha for foreigner or Gallo-Roman, and its adjective form walhisk, was used from the 3rd to 5th centuries to describe Gallo-Roman populations; moreover, the French terms Gaule/gaulois are in fact the result of the interference of Frankish Walh (gwalh/gwahl) with Latin Gallus, which explains why the Latin terms Gallia/gallus did not evolve into Gallie/Gaille/Jaille/gal/jal/gau/jau. Over time, the meaning of the term Walha became increasingly restricted: after being used by the Franks to describe the populations of Roman Gaul, it then came to designate the non-frank populations of Neustria and Austrasia. At this point, medieval Latin borrowed this Frankish term and transformed it into Wallō (Wallon), adjective forms walonicus or gualonicus, and a late geographical derivative Wallonia. While having its semantic scope diminished, the Frankish word became Waal in Low Franconian and then Waals in Dutch, and from Low Franconian again passed into Romance with a few other Romance variants (walois and walesc; at the same time the term thiotisc-/deutisk gave the form thiois). The form Wallon, and its geographical derivative Wallonie, continued to exist but its meaning has been greatly reduced, particularly since the creation of Belgium in 1830.
In Romanesque Flanders, Tournai was in every respect one of the most important towns in Flanders. Like Lille, Douai, Tourcoing and Mouscron, it is part of what has come to be known as Romanesque Flanders. These towns, whether bilingual or not, are part of the Flemish cultural area and therefore possess Flemish characteristics that can be seen in their artistic heritage (architecture, painting, sculpture, etc.). Tournai was the religious capital of Flanders for over a thousand years.

Nationalism and regionalism

The Heelneerlandist vision
The aim of Heelneerlandism was to unite all the historical Netherlands in a single state structure. In this context, Flanders is just one region among many. The basis of this aspiration are the 17 historic provinces of the Netherlands, plus the recently created Flevoland, which sometimes includes Picardy and South Africa, where a large Dutch minority still lives.
Belgian nationalist vision The secession of the United Provinces from the Spanish Netherlands in 1581 was religiously motivated. The Catholic Netherlands formed the basis of the future Belgium. However, the Protestant United Provinces controlled Catholic territories, including State Flanders, which was to become Zeeland Flanders. The Spanish Netherlands was then reduced by Artois (1649) and southern Flanders (1678).
The annexation by France in 1795 led to the disappearance of the ecclesiastical principalities and a territorial redrawing, which served as the basis for Belgium's territorial claims. State Flanders disappeared and its territories became part of the Scheldt Department, the future East Flanders.
Walloon regionalist vision
In the Walloon Region, it is forbidden to use any dialect or regional language, including Walloon, even those recognised by the French Community of Belgium, in official documents. This situation has persisted for more than twenty years. The fact that Tournai and Mouscron belong to Flanders (Gallic Flanders) is absent from any official or public designation. The Tournaisis and Mouscron regions bear names that firmly anchor them in the Walloon region:
Western Hainaut
The name Hainaut occidental dates back to the 1960s. It is said to have been coined by a geographer by default, Robert Sevrin (the western part of Hainaut). Nevertheless, it has become a household name:
  • Within the political parties in French-speaking Belgium that have Western Hainaut federations: the CDH, Ecolo, the PS, and the MR.
  • Within social organisations such as trade unions: the FGTB and mutual societies: the Mutualité Chrétienne, the CSC, the CGSLB and the Socialist mutual society.
  • Within economic and professional associations: the Association royale des architectes du Hainaut occidental, the Société de développement et de participation du Hainaut occidental.
  • Within higher education, whether in the free or official network: Haute école libre du Hainaut occidental (HELHO) and Haute école provinciale du Hainaut occidental (HEPHO).
  • Within associations: the Ligue des familles has a Hainaut occidental regional branch as does the Ligue de l'enseignement et de l'éducation permanente, the Fédération francophone des sourds de Belgique (FFSB), and the Fondation rurale de Wallonie has a "Wallonie picarde" section.
Picardie wallonne or Picardie hennuyère
The idea of changing the name to Picardie wallonne or Picardie hennuyère was launched in October 2004 by the Minister for Health, Rudy Demotte.
Although it was supported by some stakeholders, the idea was not a great success because the population was not at all involved in the project, and also because no party other than the PS had been consulted.
The president of the MR's Western Hainaut federation, Jean-Luc Crucke, put this critical comment on his website:
"Wallonie picarde ? Walloon Picardy? What do you say?
Hainaut Occidental: let's talk about it! Some people would like to rename it "Picardie wallonne" or "Wallonie picarde". No one would dispute our Picardy origins, but do we need a facade renewal? The MR federation has stated its position: no change of identity can take place without the approval and consultation of the population concerned. The most important thing is not a marketing operation, but in-depth work.
In this respect, we have to recognise that there is no shortage of work to be done, and that neither Wallonia, nor Hainaut, nor Western Hainaut, are in the best of health".
Picardy Wallonia
The initiative for the name Wallonie picarde came from the Conseil de développement (a body representing the various stakeholders in the region) as part of a reflection on the region's identity and a regional project. As part of this process, awareness-raising forums have been launched to involve all sections of the population in this project, which is intended to mobilise them.
The associations of Wallonia Picardy are gradually adapting their names:
  • In the media: the official name of the local television station is "No Télé, du Grand Tournai à la Wallonie picarde".
  • Within economic and professional associations: the Chamber of Commerce and Industry was recently renamed Chambre de Commerce de Wallonie Picarde.

Dutch nationalist vision

As soon as Belgium became independent, Belgian expansionist desires emerged and the idea of a Greater Belgium was born.) Several espionage missions were organised from 1854 onwards and French support was sought.
After the First World War and the repeated threats of annexation by Belgium as compensation, pro-Dutch reactions were expressed in order to preserve the pre-First World War borders; among other things, through the popular Flemish-Zealander song.

Provolone is a great option if you're looking for a cheese slice that will add some flavor to your sandwich without being too overwhelming.

Parmesan

Parmesan is a complex, dry cheese perfect for grating over pasta or salad. It has a salty, nutty flavor that pairs well with various dishes. Parmesan is also a good choice for cheese slices. This is because it doesn't melt quickly, so you can enjoy its flavor without worrying about it oozing over your plate.

Paneer

Paneer is a fresh cheese common in South Asian cuisine among the different types of cheese slices. It is an unaged, acid-set cheese made from curdled milk.
Paneer has a mild flavor and can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. Paneer can be sliced and used as a cheese slice.
The thickness of the paneer may vary depending on how it is cooked, but it is often about 0.4 inches thick for consumption purposes.
The texture of the paneer will also vary based on how long it was cooked and what type of cooking method was used. For example, pan frying gives paneer a crispier texture, while oven baking yields a more creamy texture.
Conclusion
No matter your taste, there's a cheese slice out there for you. With so many different types of cheese slices, it can be hard to know where to start. This guide will help you navigate the world of cheese slices, from sharp and intense cheddars to mild and creamy bries. You're sure to find the perfect cheese slice for your next meal with many options!

2024.02.03 09:48 hgk6393 Carnival Parade 2024

In a week, Carnival will be celebrated in different parts of Brabant and Limburg. I am especially interested in watching the parades (I have heard the one in Maastricht is quite good).
Does the parade follow a specific timetable, such as starting and ending at a pre-decided place and time? Or, is it totally random? I want to plan my trip, but it is hard to find timetables.
The Visit Maastricht website only mentions the dates 11-13 February, but no information on parade is provided.

Do Carnivals at other places (Eindhoven, Tilburg etc.) also have parades similar to the one in Maastricht? Do these parades follow a specific timetable, such as starting and ending at a pre-decided place and time? Or, is it totally random? I want to plan my trip, but it is hard to find timetables.

I got most of this, but there are a few gaps left: Date: den 1 ersten September 1836
Husband: Johann Georg Schneider
Geboren den 3 dritten May 1807 [two or three illegible words] zu Elz
Ledigen Standes, katholischer Religion [und Bürger?] zu Elz
Parents: Johann Georg Schneider und Margarethe ...? Bürger zu Elz [in a related birth register, her surname looks like "Naihin", but Naih is not an attested German surname).
Bride: Catharina Jeuck
Katholischer Religion, ledigen Standes
Parents: Catharina Jeuck von Hintermeilingen
I am quite surprised by this story. The bride Catharina Jeuck seems to be an illegitimate daughter of another Catharina Jeuck. By the time of marriage, she had herself an illegitimate daughter, again named Catharina Jeuck, from the groom who confessed to his fatherhood. Also, I am surprised that the groom is named a citizen though he was a simple linen-weaver, which was an almost dishonourable profession.

2024.01.16 21:26 CodexRegius Birth record from Hintermeilingen, Germany

Birth record from Hintermeilingen, Germany
This is the birth record of Catharina Jeuck, born on (8?) September 1835. Her birth was legalised through marriage in the year after, according to the note below. Her father is Schneider, Johann Georg, the last line I interpret as "geboren zu Elz, katholisch", the rest is obscure to me. The mother is Catharina Jeuck, daughter of Johann Georg Jeuck "und der ... Maria Jeuck [ledigen?] ... The note to the right seems to tell that the father was a soldier (Soldat der 1. ...), but that's all I can make out of this column. Is anyone able to interpret the rest?
