Hello fellow tutor aspirees, side hustlers, academic extraordinaires. I’m here to give you the scoop on the various tutoring platforms, how their services work, tutoring requirements, the types of students on each platform, and of course - how much you get paid for your time.
A little about me. I’ve tutored for a few months now on the following platforms: Varsity Tutors, Wyzant, and SuperProf. I’ve had a number of students on each platform, and it’s safe to say I’ve definitely realized the pros and cons of each one.
Wyzant
Money Info: You set your hourly rate. Wyzant takes 25% of it. If you set your rate to $20/hr you get paid $15/hr.
The Requirements: Each subject you tutor you have to take a 10–20 question multiple choice test on it. The test will be beginner to intermediate questions on the subject you’ve chosen. You only have one chance to pass the test.
The Pros:

• You set your own rate
• Tutors and students can freely schedule meetings on their own, rather than have someone assign you
• The user interface is better(mobile app, messaging system, teaching platform, etc)
• Students can largely vary(this can be a con too). You will get a wider range of students, who can be adults with various full time jobs.

The Cons:

• You are charged 25% of your hourly rate
• It’s very hard to get started as a new tutor. There are tons of tutors with a lot of reviews already.
• There are scammers(be cautious of people asking you to communicate off the platform)

Final Verdict
Wyzant is an easy to use platform that takes a while to build a student base. You’ll have to apply and reach out to students a lot at first before you start getting more consistent jobs. This can take a few months, so consider this before you start. The 25% fee is high, but certainly not unreasonable compared to other platforms.
Varsity Tutors
Money Info: Unless you’re tutoring GRE or LSATs, the flat rate is $15/hr, regardless of the subject. GRE and LSAT tutors make $28/hr. Varsity Tutors charges their students $50 - $75/hr.
Requirements: Most subjects do not require a test, however you do need to send in a video interview of yourself, mostly to confirm that you can speak eloquently.
The Pros:

• You are assigned students after declaring interest, so you can get started tutoring within a few days.
• Students are screened so you’ll mostly get students more prepared for lessons.

The Cons:

• A large amount of tutors will only make $15/hr, whereas they charge $50 - $75/hr per student. This can be a huge cut, and limit on pay, especially if you’re teaching harder subjects like programming, sciences, higher level math.
• The user interface is not as great. Basic functionality is there, but the overall platform is not aesthetic.
• You are legally not allowed to take students off the platform.

Final Verdict
Varsity Tutors definitely has the lowest pay amongst all the platforms. $15/hr to teach is what you can make at some retail jobs in the US. The platform can be better if you need to start making money immediately, or if you live in a country where the cost of living is lower. The amount you are paid is better for people who are teaching subjects that aren’t too difficult.
SuperProf
Money Info: You set your own rate, SuperProf takes 10%. The caveat, SuperProf charges students $39 a month to use the platform.
Pros:

• For tutors, SuperProf takes the least amount from your pay compared to other platforms.
• Students are generally more prepared because they are paying $39 a month to use the platform.
• The user interface is also pretty good.
• You can set your own cancellation policies

Cons:

• There are less students because of the monthly subscription fee.
• It’s very hard to get started as a new tutor. There are tons of tutors with a lot of reviews already.
• You have to teach your first two lessons free.

Final Verdict
SuperProf is very similar to Wyzant in that students and tutors can openly communicate and set up time with each other. The 10% fee is lower than the other platforms. But because it’s already hard to get started as a new tutor, and there are less students on the platform, it’s one of the harder platforms to build a student base.
Additional Notes
While all these platforms have their pros and cons. You can always consider tutoring independently. You do not need any licenses or business registration for tutoring in most places. Once you get a student base through Wyzant or SuperProf, you can take them off-platform and teach independently. The best part? You keep the money you work hard for.

I'm a full stack develop working in a company. Months ago I decided to build a platform as a side project to add a new source of income so I built Workswift. It's a platform of microjobs where a publisher posts a small job with tiny payout in the other hand workers do that job and get paid. I got 45 worker and I posted some jobs but when I tested the payment gateway in production it doesn't work because I'm from a country that doesn't support it, I felt very frustrated and I tried other payment gateways but always I had the same problem (everything work in dev mode but production not). I am the oldest of three kids, and over the past couple years, I have been noticing how I have started doing more and more work around the house, while my two younger siblings do less and less. My little brother is14 and a fortnite kid who just sits at the computer all day and plays video games, and if he's asked to do something or asked to stop playing, he yells and won't help with anything. My sister has no work enthic and my dad ends up doing the job for her, for example, I was paid 50 dollars to dig up enough ground to plant 11 trees and put mulch all around them. After this the family was supposed to work together to plant 3 fruit trees we got. This slowly turned into me and my dad being the only two planting and then my dad said, "well if you want the money you can just plant these three aswell. This was all last summer, and recently he bought 3 new trees and came into my room today while I was working on homework (both of my siblings had been on screens for the last couple hours). And told me he needed me to help him plant the trees, I asked if my younger brother could help since I have planted all the trees in your yard so far. Maybe something about me: I'm a 24-year-old guy with a good, stable, well-paying job, well-built, quite handsome (at least that's what I hear from others, not just my mom), educated, with life plans, hobbies, knowing how to treat a woman correctly, ensuring her safety, and making her feel loved and cared for. I don't drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, go to clubs, or have a million female friends. I live with my bf, we split rent, he had a paid off car. It was older and didn't have airbags but was a Honda and he only drives 1.5 miles to work each day. He just got an entry level $21 an hour county government job and went and bought a brand new leased 35k Suburu WRX. He put $5 down on this purchase. It also takes premium gas now. 7 month relationship. Not long, but I gotta say he was probably one of my greatest loves. I’d say it was mutual but at the same time he struggled with honesty around his party lifestyle. We broke up two weeks ago so it’s of course super fresh. I had him blocked briefly because I’d tried to end it a couple times before actually pulling the plug and he would blow up my phone and I’d cave. My boyfriend (PwBPD, 28M) and I (23F) have known each other for about five years (we’re both artists and we’ve only had a strictly professional and platonic relationship until late last year) and was diagnosed with BPD as a teenager, but never received the appropriate treatment for it.
We made the decision to move in with each other in January, and things have been slightly difficult with the transition, mainly due to finances and adjusting to living in a new city. Additionally, due to my partner’s profession, he hasn’t had access to health insurance through his current and previous employer and we’ve been searching for jobs together, which consisted of me sending jobs, tailoring his resume, creating his linkedin, and many other things. I’ve also found a high paying position on my own to relieve our stressors, and I start in a matter of weeks.
In times of high stress, my partner will dissociate and become extremely suicidal, depressed, verbally hostile, and overall, extremely unkind. We will get into the worst fights over the smallest things and tell me our relationship isn’t working because I chew too much or I left a dish in the sink. No matter how calm, considerate, and how much I will try to deescalate the argument, any disagreement or misunderstanding will turn into a blowout, and he’ll always stonewall me.
He’ll isolate and not talk to me for days. A couple of days ago, I was experiencing a painful health concern that left me with the inability to walk very well on my own and because he was dissociating, he simply locked the door and holed himself up in our guest room and hasn’t talked to me or interacted with me for three days. I’ve been pretty much experiencing this alone, and forced to walk down multiple flights of stairs alone to cook, take care of our pets, and whatever else while experiencing intense whole body pain that is enough to make me vomit. I’ve explained to him how I felt a day ago via text with no reply.
Before that, I wasn’t spending much time with him for about four days because I had to finish training for a certification program for my career. He started dissociating and told me that he thinks that we should have his ex in a throuple because there were “gaps” in our relationship (one being that I wasn’t spending as much time with him because of “other things” and because I liked to “go out” way more than him) and I lost my composure. I packed my things to leave and he snapped out of it, and cried nonstop for two days and said he didn’t know what was happening to him and promised to never say anything like that again. He seriously and earnestly didn’t understand why he would say that, especially because of how they ended and what they were (year long fwb/situationship). I haven’t emotionally recovered from what happened, despite him apologizing. I have been feeling deeply insecure and depressed since then.
We were doing so well for a month and then he started dissociating because of work, finances, and now we aren’t speaking.
In times that he’s not dissociating, he’s kind, affectionate, gentle, supportive, and truly my best friend. We have pretty much everything in common and a lot of good memories.
I’ve cried myself to sleep many days and nights and I’ve even felt like taking my own life as well sometimes. I try to keep myself tethered to my support system but I haven’t had nearly the courage to tell them what’s happening. I’ve been trying to be his support system because he truly doesn’t have one and it feels like one-sided support. Whenever I want to leave, he’ll cry and have a meltdown, and I try to forgive him and understand. But I don’t think I have much of that left to offer for him anymore.
I feel like I’m losing myself and losing my mind in all of this. I don’t know what to do because I truly love him. Any advice would be truly appreciated.

I've been a dishwasher for a month and a half now and these weird eczema/hives ( since two weeks ago ) have been getting worse and worse no matter what. I can't change gloves because I can't access latex free to see if they're the cause. And I got a new pair that goes up to elbows to try to avoid harsh chemicals getting in them. And I can't change job positions because of where I work. I've been trying to use hydrocortisone cream daily but to no avail. I want this to stop, I hate the itching and redness. About three months ago I accepted a new position as a lab Driector in a small company. I relocated for this position, and during the week I moved here, before my official first day I got a call from boss letting me know there would be an involuntary 20% reduction in hours and associated pay.
Thisn job as presented me was to build a new program within the organization and hire the team for that. Within a week of being there, one manager resigned and I absorbed his team and her responsibilities.
As a lab director I have found myself spending a lot of time, doing lab cleanings and equipment maintenance, and lab experiments and sample processing.
The financial stability also worries me, 😟. Getting anything ordered is slow and takes time. For over one month i have been trying to order a reagent ($1000) for an experiment, and haven't been able to, becuase my boss has been trying to find alternate suppliers for a cheaper cost.
Should I give it more time or is it time to start looking for another position?

I've worked for a small charity for the last year as a part time fundraising officer. I've had 10 years of experience including marketing, communications and database administration.
Over the past 2 months they've paid me for an extra day to build a custom system within our new CRM because they knew I had the skills from a previous charity. I was happy to do it on a contract basis and honestly I just really love the system so agreed to get paid the same rate as my fundraising officer role even though I knew this was expert level. Yes I know that was stupid but I'm really proud of the intricate way I've build this and know it's going to have a massive impact on future awareness and fundraising.
That extra day per week has finished now but last week they told me I will need to manage the new CRM system as well as train all the staff within my fundraising hours. No paid rise, no job title change. The CEO responded to my reluctancy by saying "we're a small team and we all have to muck in. We can't get bogged down by silly little things like a job title change"
I really believe in the work that this charity does but i can't stay in this job if I don't get any acknowledgement for this specialist extra work I'm doing.
What advice would you give me on what to say in my follow up meeting this week? Obviously it's unfair and they should know that but what do you say to someone who thinks it's okay to do this?
