Have I found the ultimate sleep system setup?

Have I found the ultimate sleep system setup?
Over the last few years I've been sleeping with my Rab Neutrino bag on a Thermarest pad with a mountain equipment blow up pillow (setup approximately 1.5kilos) . Every year the aches and pains get worse until a trip last year, by 3:30am-4:30am every morning I was aching all over (Also probably down to be in my mid fifties and body not what it used to be). By this time I had to get up, no point laying there in pain.
So after this Sweden trip I decided I would find a good setup for sleeping. I knew it would impact the weight of my rucksack but a good nights sleep is essential imo for my thru hikes. There's other places I can offset this weight increase...
I purchased a Thermarest NeoAir XLite NXT MAX RW. I also purchased a Helinox Ultralite Cot. For the pillow I went with a grey Nemo Fillo Luxury Pillow and on top of the cot and pad I put a cheap £9.99 Highlander Reflective mat. (Pictured) These were all secured to the cot with some homemade elastic straps. For the topper (not shown) I went with a enlighten equipment 20f 950fp Revelation Quilt. (never like the confinement of a mummy bag) Now I know this was a expensive experiment, the kit wasn't cheap but I've been striving for that under canvas decent nights sleep.
First night on the 12 day thru hike I went to bed at 9am and didn't stir until 3am....no aches or pains yay! I then turned over and didn't stir again until the alarm went off at 6:30am. Every night on the trail I had a great nights sleep.
The difference was night and day. This setup has cost me approximately £700 (but I did get £240 back from selling old sleeping kit). The sleeping kit weight has increased by 1.3kgs to 2.8kgs but for me its been worth every 'pound' ! I've already offset this weight increase over lightening kit in other areas.
Have I found the ultimate setup, probably for others no, as it'll be too heavy to consider but for me it is.
For me Sleep is a super power.

2023.02.23 02:00 Arandom_personn Don't hate me but Vessel is my least favourite album

I still love it, but compared to the others it's at the bottom for me.
I don't know how to explain this but it feels like the album they had the least creative control with. It doesn't feel as raw as ST and RAB and it's probably because the record label wouldn't let them release anything too... outlandish? as their first album with them. Even with Blurryface it felt like like they loosened up a bit with what they let them do.
I've know a lot of people who don't like feuled by ramen because they kinda water down artists sound to make them more commercially visible. I know Tyler would never sign/stay with them if they tried to control them, but at the end of the day all company's want is to make money, and they were trying to turn a smallish ohio band into something that would make them money. It makes sense that once they had a big established fanbase they let them do what they want.
It also sounds really polished? like its almost too perfect...? I think I like almost all the RAB versions of songs instead of the Vessel ones. I like the homemade feel of RAB cause it adds to how personal it feels. With Vessel, all the changes just feel too commercial to me. I probably would've liked Vessel more if it had completely new songs instead of the 6/7 remade from rab.
Forgetting remade songs, the tracks on RAB are much better than the tracks on Vessel imo.
Slowtown, forest, glowing eyes, kitchen sink, anathema, ruby, be concerned, clear
compared to
Migraine, semi automatic, screen, the run and go, fake you out, truce
I personally prefer all of the rab tracks compared to Vessel.
Also it doesnt really have anything along with it? Like all the other studio albums had the dema lore or just the blurryface concept character (which kinda tied into the lore later). Vessel is just kinda there?
I don't think it's objectively their worst album, but it's my least favourite. If Vessel is your favourite I'd love to hear why.

The Kvarner region is easily accessible thanks to Rijeka International Airport, and the most popular air lines to Rijeka airport are Stockholm - Rijeka (Ryanair), London - Rijeka (Ryanair) and Eindhoven - Rijeka (Transavia).
📷
Opatija riviera
To begin with, visit the beautiful Opatija, the cradle of tourism in Kvarner. The first hotel in Croatia was opened in Opatija back in 1884, and it is reputed to be one of the most elite summer resorts in Croatia. The Opatija Riviera has a 12 km long promenade along the sea, and you can see beautiful Opatija villas, impeccably maintained gardens and parks and luxury hotels. Walking along the Lungomare promenade, you will also see the symbol of Opatija - the statue of the Girl with a Seagull. The summer stage in Opatija offers numerous musical events, and Opatija is also home to numerous galleries and an art center, making it an ideal choice for all artists and creatives. Thanks to its location, Opatija has been known as a health resort since the Austro-Hungarian era. The high concentration of sea aerosol in the air and the beneficence of the rich forest areas make Opatija a recognized and well-known health resort. Experience all the charms of thalassotherapy and recover with the positive effects of this beautiful sea climate.
Rijeka
The metropolis of Kvarner, the city of Rijeka, is located not far from Opatija. The city of commerce and shipping is today the largest commercial port in Croatia. A rich cultural and artistic life and the biggest carnival event in Croatia sets Rijeka apart from other cities in Kvarner. Take a walk on the Korzo through the city center, and then take a look at the Trsat castle. In addition to the wonderful view from the castle, you can also view the museum exhibition and gallery at the location, and relax in the cafe bar. In the summer months, concerts, plays and fashion shows are held in Trsat. Nearby is the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, the oldest Marian shrine in Croatia with a Franciscan monastery. In memory of Pope John Paul II, who in 2003 visited the shrine, the monument Holy Father - Pilgrim of Trsat was set, the work of sculptor Anto Jurkic. The town of Senj played a historical role in the region, and there you learn about the spirit of Uskok warriors among the walls of the Nehaj fortress and enjoy the biggest summer carnival in Croatia.
📷
Islands Krk, Cres, Losinj and Rab
If you like peace, the expanse of the sea and islands, visit the islands of Rab, Krk, Cres and Losinj. Long promenades, rich fragrant gardens, centuries-old parks and rich fauna of land and sea will win you over at first sight. On these islands, you can enjoy the smell of pine trees, swim in the crystal clear sea, see dolphins at play, Mediterranean fur seals resting, engage in various sports activities, and also eat well! The island of Krk played an important role in the development of Croatian literacy, where the most important Croatian monument - the Bascanska tablet from the year 1100 - was found. This tablet written in Glagolitic was discovered in 1851 by the young priest Petar Dorcic in the floor of the Church of St. Lucia near Baska. The text written on the tablet became an important source of information about the development of the Croatian Glagolitic script, the Croatian language and culture. The unusual island of Cres is home to griffon vultures that take refuge in the Cres eco-center Caput insulae, and on Cres you can also enjoy cycling and walking thanks to the large number of trails. Lubenice beach and Mali bok beach will enchant you with their beauty and colors! The marine waters of the island of Losinj are known as the home of dolphins where you can see them in carefree play, and the island is also a famous diving destination in Kvarner thanks to its rich and interesting underwater world. In addition to diving, on Losinj you can climb rocks, ride bicycles and e-bikes, jump with a parachute, play tennis and much more! Losinj is truly a paradise for active vacations, and when you get hungry, you can enjoy, in addition to local taverns and traditional dishes, the modern cuisine of the Alfred Keller restaurant, which has one Michelin star and is located in Mali Losinj. The forest island of Rab is home to 30 sandy beaches! Visit Paradise Beach, which is reputed to be one of the most beautiful on the Adriatic. In the summer period, you can enjoy the Rab Festival in the old town, and you must try the famous island dessert - Rab Cake.
📷
Kvarner Hinterland
The mountainous green areas are located ten kilometers from the sea in the hinterland of Kvarner. It is an oasis of peace and quiet, and in the winter months it is an increasingly visited destination. If you want to go hiking, Kvarner will delight you with Risnjak National Park. It got its name from the lynx that lives in the park, and in addition to the lynx, the park is also home to bears and wolves. The mushroom picking event is one of the most visited in the park, and you can go mountain biking and sport fishing. The steep elevations of the Ucka mountain rise above Istria and the western part of Kvarner. On top of Vojak there is a tower, which is the protective symbol of Ucka. The tower offers a 360-degree view of Rijeka, the Kvarner Islands, Istria and Platak. Regardless of your fitness level, Ucka offers something for everyone! So you can enjoy hiking, free climbing, mountain biking, free flying and much more. There are numerous hiking and biking trails, educational trails, and workshops that you can explore.
Kvarner cuisine is based on fish, seafood and olive oil. In the hinterland of the region, Gorski kotar, the main role on menu have mushrooms, forest fruits and game dishes. Kvarner brings together top restaurants, taverns and cafes with an Austro-Hungarian flair. There are even three restaurants with a Michelin star in Kvarner, namely "Draga di Lovrana" in Lovran, "Nebo" in Rijeka and "Alfred Keller" in Mali Losinj. Homemade brandies enriched with aromatic herbs are indispensable in every place, and friendly hosts will offer them to you.
If you are looking for accommodation in Kvarner, take a look at our offer of luxury villas in Kvarner.

2022.07.19 21:24 vanwilso WMNF peak bagging gear list that works for me

https://lighterpack.com/1t25b
Greetings Ultralight , Here's what works for me.
I live near the White Mountains and started peak bagging the 48 4000' list last fall. Six hikes ranging from 2-6 days later I've completed 44 of 48 4000'rs and a handful of 52 WAV. Temp range from 18-90 f. ( Couple weeks ago made it down to Wild River wilderness down from Moriahs same day guy passed from hypothermia on Washington. Sad news. Washington looked scary from next ridge over.)
Every hike is a shake down as i tweak my list according to mostly weather. Only way to know what you DON'T need is to get out there and find out. If you didn't use it , don't bring it next time if conditions are the same.
No camp/sleep clothes as i found i don't need them. Trusty patagonia sunshade hoodie has been awesome when its wicked hot, bugs attack. Two pair of socks, darn tough mid under smartwool ski-boot high socks work best for me to prevent foot fatigue . Adidas running shorts. This setup allows for a huge temp range when in motion. If i don't pass out in my hiking garb i didn't hike far enough that day;)
Garmin watch last several days on gps recording setting. Garmin in- reach mini2 for weather and texting family also last several days. Freeing up phone battery life for music, more detailed nav, photos, tent entertainment. Allowing one NU10000 nitecore battery sufficient for up to 6 days so far. Bit of overlap and redundancy but whatever.
Sunpeak collapsible umbrella is amazing in the rain. Added a couple loops on my shoulder strap for hands free. under 5oz. I keep it in my tent bag.
Made some camp shoes out of old Solomon shoe soles and kite string( kiteboarding bar string). very basic and simple. better than sap on the bare feet. Tried other options but bulky and heavier options didn't make sense for my needs.
Food for me is ever evolving. I average 1.5lb food per day. Try for +- 3k calories. I find i always eat light first day of hiking until dinner. Last day I'm hiking towards that burger so end up with extra food. Stopped buying dehydrated camping meals. Instead bought bulk dehydrated chicken , black beans, vegetables and minute rice. taco seasoning and bag a chips makes for big calories and palatable. Buy a can of instant starbucks and dehydrated creamer to save money by making my own packets. Same with Gatorade powder. Repack from heavy packaging to ziplocks. Make daily food pack to insure daily caloric intake .
My cook kit consists of 900ml pot, homemade coozie with lit. Small round cutting board plastic fits in coozie. Small knife and toothpick. Coozie serves as a bowl plate etc. Haven't eaten out of the pot in awhile. no need to clean it which is annoying. Could be lighter but why? This works great for me. I could shave 2oz off... ugh. Make it stop.
100g small fuel can last a long time if used sparingly . I almost full boil each time. no need for roaring boil if water is good. One coffee and one dinner and tea a day. No hot breakfast or lunch for me. I weigh it at home before and after to gauge consumption. Easy 5 nights plus for me.
Tp! i use those little paper tab things (Wize?). the size of 4 nickels stacked each. I use 4 a day. pour water on them to expand. Use them for many uses throughout the day before their final use...They are awesome . Works for drying off tent, sweat, food mess, hands...
My sleeping setup is a Rab Mythic 180. Not much info online about this thing. I prefer mummies and this one rocks. got it at a super good price. i was hot when it got down to 18f with layers on. had to shed. Hottest night was 67f. Overall 5 stars. S2S silk liner, Thermorest xlite wide and s2s pillow.
Love it or hate it. Zpacks Altaplex is awesome. Don't need a ground sheet. It works in rain and wind. Super light and tough enough. Only issue I've had is getting the mesh caught in the zipper. Once. Loud as fuck in pouring rain though. Yes, i have an Xmid 1p and Big Agnes fly creek..
So yeah, little bit of redneck ingenuity, tons of research on Ultralight. Ebay and an AMEX.
This forum has been invaluable to my hikes. Wanted to share what works for me. Hope it is helpful to someone. Im Forever grateful for the insight from likeminded individuals on this forum. Happy hiking.

2022.07.07 20:58 kriptnet Five days UK to Belgium for work

Five days UK to Belgium for work
Travelling from the UK to Belgium for a work conference. Wanted to take my folding bike (Belgium and Netherlands a dream to bike round). Also wanted to do one of these lists for ages! First-time poster, long-time reader etc... ;-)
Rough gear list;

Backpack(s)

  • Minaal 2.0 Carry-On
  • Minaal Daily (original Kickstarter -still going strong!) - collapsed flat and put in the laptop section, for 'daily' use as 2.0 would be just too large. Also allows me to break the one bag rule when returning laden down with Belgian chocolate if needed. No one bagger would begrudge me that, surely? ;-)

Bike Gear

Tech Stuff

  • framework laptop for personal/consulting use (like writing this post)
  • dell laptop for work
  • Minix NEO P3 100W (2x 100W USB-C, 1x 20w USB-C, 1x 18w USB-A) small, compact, comes with travel adaptors. Brilliant and not too expensive.
  • Momentum M2 over-ear headphones. A few years old and bulky, but I have hearing aids so I cant use the in-ear types and the sound quality/noise cancelling is _so good_, especially when trying to work in a busy Eurostar carriage!
  • Kindle paperwhite
  • USBC 2x 1M cables (should have got a longer one for one of them), plus USB-C adaptors for lighting and micro-USB.
  • HDMI 0.5 cable plus Anker USB-C adaptor with HDMI, USB-A etc for presenting.
  • Logitech Ultrathin Touch Bluetooth Mouse
EDC Pouch (blue with white mesh)
  • assorted meds (antihistamine, paracetamol etc)
  • plasters
  • spare disposable COVID mask
  • InCharge 6 in one adaptor (amazon link) ended up not using it much as I charged from Minix.
  • PortaPow (USB-A Condom) (amazon link)
  • ThinOptics Reading Glasses emergency spares (amazon link)
  • folding UK USB plug adaptor (amazon link) not needed, but EDC emergencies so left it in there.

Misc toiletries/eating stuff (mesh bag)

  • small packs of condiments
  • earplugs
  • comb
  • glasses cloth
  • titanium spork & folding knife
  • small microfibre hand towel
  • lip salve, a tiny pot of tiger balm (good for the insect bite I got on the first day!)lip salve

Tea Stuff

I'm a Tynan acolyte here! Why is all conference & hotel coffee so terrible? Why do they only have Lipton teas? This is near-universal FFS! So I bring my own.
  • Assorted green/black/white teas in a stackable pot with NFC tags (didn't work so well, will try another approach another time). From a mix of tea dealers suppliers.
  • Titanium Gaiwan and tasting cups (from Etsy, I think)
  • Contigo flask with drinking lid (this is great, lasted years, never leaks, fits the tea canisters inside for travel)

Clothes

  • Rohan Linen blend trousers & short-sleeved shirt (don't know why they don't get more love on this sub., OK a lot of their gear looks terrible, but the linen stuff has been reliably great).
  • darn tough ankle socks & icebreaker slightly longer ones
  • Two Seagale merino t-shirts
  • two pairs of Wool and Prince boxers (great, most comfortable pairs I have, found out about them from the 'Snark Nomad' blog - that's a man who went the extra mile in testing!)
  • Patagonia packable waterproof
  • icebreaker windbreaker of some kind (also packs down to the size of your fist)
  • RAB microlight hoodie (bought to replace my lost and much-missed icebreaker one. It's OK, but it's not as comfy as merino. Packs down small though. much-missed. In case the conference hall turned their aircon to freezer temps.
  • icebreaker merino snood/neck gaiter. Emergency sleep mast, towel, hat, you name it.
  • mountain warehouse cap (thinking of replacing it with an even lighter cycling one but it will look silly when not wearing a helmet...), barely used.
  • Wool and Prince long sleeve shirt for smartening up (didn't need it)
  • Minaal packing cubes (I had a voucher)
Also had a universal sink plug but ended up washing stuff in the shower, so will leave that at home next time.

2021.05.17 13:12 AlexanderPANASONIC No Phun Intended - Everything We Know: History, Trivia, and Mysteries (Solved?)

What is it?

No Phun Intended is a "solo album" by the frontman of the current band Twenty One Pilots, Tyler Joseph. I put "solo album" in quotes for a reason, we'll discuss that in a bit. But note that, for the sake of discussion, I will be referring to it as an "album" from here on out.
For now, I'll say that most people believe there to have been 19 tracks on the album -- with, of course, most of them known and uploaded to YouTube. This is a very complex aspect, though. I promise we'll discuss the number of tracks in more detail later on, because it's complicated.

Record and release date?

It is well known that the album was recorded between 2007 and 2008. Note that Joseph was in his senior year of high school at this time. If you try to find the release date, you'll find claims ranging from 2007 to 2009. Around 2009, Joseph was entering his first/freshman (only) year of college on a scholarship -- of course, he left shortly after to pursue music. In theory, the recording process could have begun as early as 2007. We can consider 2008 the album's prime and 2009 the year in which Tyler redirected his focus to his newly-formed band.
[Age 19-20]
Update: 2008. The discography seemed to have been uploaded to Joseph's "PureVolume" (social media) account.
Image 1
^ Although, in the linked image, it states that the album was uploaded (digitally) on November 30, 1999. I've seen people acknowledge the year in a confused manner. Perhaps this is just Tyler Joseph's humor? With the aforementioned details, perhaps we should assume the (de facto) "release date" is November 30, 2008.

Album Art

The front cover is obviously a pink car. I feel like the context behind the album art and album name have yet to be disclosed, but I don't really think it matters much.
The car either seems to be a 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis or a 1996 Crown Victoria. I've always thought the car was pink; but upon closer inspection, in less saturated images, it may just be tan. I don't know if there is information about who it belonged to -- Tyler or his parents. And, of course, we don't need to dig as deep as a location. His childhood home in Ohio, obviously.
I'm also not sure how many physical copies exist or how to tell if it is authentic. If you Google it, a lot of variations and art comes up, with little discrepancies. Which is annoying.
I came upon a Twitter post, though. It looks really authentic, but the user says it is a "homemade album," which is kind of misleading because -- in a production sense -- Tyler's album is homemade. (I suppose, note how they titled "Chords".)

Production Notes

It is known that No Phun Intended was recorded in Tyler's basement, during his senior year in high school. It is known, via various retellings (I won't bother to look up the source), that Tyler's parents often overheard him "screaming" from the basement (same source as above).
The songs were recorded using Garageband on the Macbook.
The track "TB Saga" (which has since become a meme) features the vocals of Tyler's younger brother, Jay Joseph.
UPDATE: user "ostensiblyokay22" has brought to my attention THIS TWEET by Jay Joseph himself, confirming that he DOES NOT appear on the track, despite popular belief.
Also, not many people know that the original Twenty One Pilots bassist, Nick Thomas, contributed guitar to some of the songs on the album. (He said so in an interview: SOURCE)
[Around this time, Tyler and Nick were on a basketball team together. A full clip of them singing the National Anthem on "senior night" has been uploaded to YouTube (uploaded in 2009), with a clip being shown in the Regional at Best web series. Here.]

Types of releases?

Both digital and physical, as a matter of fact.
It should be noted that any incarnation of No Phun Intended (by Tyler Joseph) was most likely never meant to be officially released nor sold commercially.
(Note: I hesitate to call the subject matter an "album" because: the two best-known versions are a 6-track EP and a 19-track bootleg consisting of discovered tracks.) For the sake of discussion, though, I'll refer to No Phun Intended as an "album."
[Also, I hesitate to call it a "solo" album because that term is usually reserved for (veteran) musicians who had moved on from a band they were already in.]

Digital Release - PureVolume account

We already discussed Joseph's PureVolume a bit when talking about the release date. PureVolume was essentially a MySpace for unknown artists to share their music. Not much is known about Joseph's account other than the fact that THE FIRST SIX TRACKS Joseph EVER RELEASED could be found there. See more on the important six tracks in the next section.
Here, though, I'll just tell you what other known details were available on the page, based on the images.
In Image 2, we see some lyrics or poetry in the bio (I did a quick Google search and nothing turned up -- I've seen people assume they belong to Joseph)... and the 'Location' is set as "Lewis Center, Ohio," along with the album's 'release date,' November 30, 1999. Back to Image 1, we see some photos of the young musician; one of the photos features the car featured on the album cover of No Phun Intended. It's interesting seeing it from another angle.
The PureVolume account is now gone and cannot be viewed -- all occurrences of the link online will not entail desired results. I believe his profile became unavailable in the year 2015. (I saw people claiming Joseph removed the account himself. With no evidence, of course, but it's highly likely this is true.) I also see many people recommending the use of the well-known Wayback Machine tool to view the page, although I could not get it to work.

A.) Release: NPI is a 6-Track EP

This is one of the more important topics of discussion. What most people do not know is that the very first ever physical release by Tyler Joseph only consisted of six tracks. No Phun Intended was/is an extended play -- an EP!
Tracklisting:
  1. Taken By Sleep
  2. Drown
  3. Tonight
  4. Save
  5. Hole In The Ground
  6. Blasphemy
Listing 1 (Discogs)
Listing 2 (Random Soundcloud user -- caption says information was taken from PureVolume, as do most people when referring to the EP)
I've seen multiple people on Reddit talk about the initial six-track release. The more I research, the truer this seems.

B.) Physical Copy - Madison Joseph

Madison Brett (Maddy Joseph), Tyler's sister, has a homemade CD with three tracks that weren't on the 6-track EP. The track names and timestamps are written in sharpie.
SOURCE/IMAGE
  1. TB Saga
  2. Words
  3. Whisper

C.) Physical Copy - Distribution

It is said that some physical copies were given to friends and family members.
I also found a Reddit in which a user claims his girlfriend's family is family friends with the Joseph family, and that she was around from the "beginning." He heard that "one of Tyler's first ever shows was in a small chapel where he gave away free CDs" but isn't sure if NPI is the CD in question. (LINK)
In this interview, the former bassist revealed that the band would hand demo tapes out to clubs/venues, even before the band had a name.

D.) BOOTLEG Edition - The version that everyone has come to know.

Those who haven't done much research, understandably, assume that No Phun Intended was a simple, straightforward 19-track release, that is simply rare. In actuality, when the claims are averaged out, the more realistic possibility seems to be that the six-track EP was the true release by Joseph... while the 19-track "album" that has become somewhat 'mainstream' amongst the fandom purely consists of leaks and uncovered songs by fans -- in other words, it is a bootleg/compilation. The individuals who uncovered the leaked tracks cannot be credibly traced, I don't think. These unknown individuals are also most likely responsible for creating the de facto tracklisting for the bootleg album. The placement of songs like "Prove Me Wrong" or "Whisper" probably has little significance, with zero input from Tyler Joseph.
Excluding the pink car, any imagery associated with the tracklisting is probably fake or unofficial. I.e. that easily Google-able image of a typeface tracklisting, with the 19 tracks + the Save "Alternative Version." Any listing online is almost guaranteed to be a fake, bootleg, fan/self-made copy. I know a lot of hardcore fans may desperately crave an authentic physical edition, but realistically, finding one may be close to impossible unless you know an old acquaintance of Tyler Joseph's. If tracks from the album must be listened to, they are all readily available on YouTube or Soundcloud.
Of course, if you want a physical copy and do not care about authenticity, then by all means purchase a fan-made one online if you'd like. :)
Note, that Tyler has stated in an interview that he does not want anyone hearing his first tracks.

MAINSTREAM (Bootleg) Tracklisting

  1. Blasphemy
  2. Drown
  3. Hole In The Ground
  4. Save
  5. Taken By Sleep
  6. I Want To Know
  7. Just Like Yesterday
  8. Never Change
  9. Prove Me Wrong
  10. Realize That It's Gone
  11. Tonight
  12. Falling Too
  13. Whisper
  14. TB Saga
  15. Chords/Words
  16. Trees
  17. Where Did We Go
  18. I'm A Goner
  19. Hear Me Now
[Note that every song on the original 6-track EP appears as the first six tracks on the bootleg (with the exception of "Tonight" being replaced with "I Want To Know") but in a slightly different order.]
Also, in 2018, a decade later, two new tracks surfaced after an individual received a "CD from a minister at a church" Joseph went to...
  1. Going Down
  2. Untitled Demo [which is 1:23 in length, more on this track later]

Another reason I believe No Phun Intended to be a bootleg compilation:

Notice that "Just Like Yesterday" isn't on the original 6-track EP nor is it on Tyler's sister's 3-track CD. Also notice that "Just Like Yesterday" is performed LIVE and that there is movement in the background.
Listen to the song -- and listen to the round of applause at the end.
Finally, note that -- given that the song is played on an electric keyboard, in front of a crowd -- that deep on Tyler's Instagram is THIS PHOTO. It was posted 479 weeks ago, in March 2012. In the caption of the photo, Tyler acknowledges that it's an old photo by saying "he used to play (live) for extended family." Hence, we may have an actual photograph of a song being recorded for and/or performed from No Phun Intended.
But hopefully, this hypothesis can challenge the potential misconception that Tyler heavily planned out a 19-track album. I believe the 19-track edition to be a bootleg with a collection of songs recorded separately. [In a below interview, I exhibit an interview transcription revealing that Tyler Joseph wrote most of the songs on self-titled without the goal of a record in mind. He more so just wrote songs before moving on to the next ones, slowly amassing them overtime. Or so it seems.]

Pre-discussion Context - The Minister's CD

There are three primary mysteries associated with No Phun Intended. I will discuss these three mysteries later, but first, I need to mention a HUGE lead. It may be completely false, but it is something that cannot go unmentioned.
Around the time of the discovery of "Going Down" in 2018, an anecdote began spreading, that someone received a CD from a minister at a church that Tyler Joseph went to. Subsequently, I started to see a Google Drive link being attached to this story. You're going to want to open it -- it's pretty interesting, to say the least.
Google Drive (created July 23, 2018 by "Avizemo" -- right when "Going Down" surfaced)
Google Drive (a backup I made)
In short, the tracklisting within the link is as follows:
Note that the individual behind the Google Drive has claimed that the names listed below were the ones attached to the files when ripping the audio from the CD.
1. Blasphemy Blasphemy
2. Wash Me, Drown Me Drown
3. Down Going Down
4. Lord Of Glory Lord of Glory
5. Hole In The Ground Hold In The Ground
6. Save Save
7. Chords And Words Chords/Words
8. Be Concerned (ft. Jocef) Be Concerned (ft. Jocef)
9. Prove (Alissa's Song) Prove Me Wrong
10. "Taken By Sleep" Taken By Sleep
11. PRAY Hear Me Now
12. Tonight (A Death Will Occur) Tonight
13. (Taco Bell) Saga TB Saga
14. The One Gone I'm A Goner
15. The Trees Trees
What is fascinating about the tracklisting in this Google Doc, is the alternative titles to the songs. I think it would be really cool if these were "working titles" or the ACTUAL titles Tyler Joseph intended for his unreleased tracks. Many of them are very different from the ones that appear on the 19-track Bootleg edition of the album. For example, "Prove Me Wrong" is titled "Prove (Alissa's Song)." If anyone has ever heard of the expression, "you can't make this sh*t up" -- I think that describes the file names perfectly. I mean, if someone were trying to prove that they have an authentic copy of a project Tyler Joseph put together, I feel like the last thing they'd do is completely change the name of a Tyler Joseph song (this one has half of a million views on YouTube) to something so specific. Take a look at the tracklisting:
Note, late into my research I stumbled upon this Reddit thread. Someone is claiming that "that was handed to me by one of Tyler Joseph's old church friends. There are 2 types of No Phun Intended Tyler Joseph had made, The Regular One, 12 Tracks, Then the Bonus Track, 15 Which I have." ..... I doubt that either of these potential CD's that "Tyler Joseph made" are intended to be official releases. But I do find the possibility of the "bonus tracks" to be interesting. The Redditor states that TB Saga, Goner, and Trees are all NPI bonus tracks. This would actually make a lot of sense, given that Trees and Goner are seemingly lost. Before I delve into this subject any further, though, I want to stop myself and reserve it for the sections below. As for TB Saga, it would also make sense if this was, for whatever reason, a bonus.

MYSTERIES

This is an important section. Since the beginning of the 19-track bootleg's surfacing, various questions arose about certain tracks -- some of which are still unavailable, and some of which likely weren't from the NPI era. Along with questions about the distribution of the album, many also question the likelihood and existence of certain tracks.
The WIKI and many Redditors/and more Redditors call potential misinformation to attention.
The tracks in question are:

MYSTERY #1 - "Chords/Words"

First, let's talk about Chords/Words. I've seen this track referred to as "Chords/Words" ... "Chords and Words" ... "Chords" ... and "Words"
Almost any online listing of No Phun Intended lists this track but states that it is "Unavailable" or skips over it, if the NPI listing is a playlist.
Interestingly, the current listing of "Chords/Words" on Genius gives lyrics to the song, "I hear a chord / from there I hear a word / For you to listen / I will run and I will hide / Just because I can’t deny / I hear a word and then I hear a chord / For you to listen when you save me /I will not stand my grave today / Because I will see another day." There are more lyrics written too, but I don't want to clog my thread. As of May 2021, the lyrics are still on the Genius page, although -- who knows -- maybe someone will take them down. However, most people seem to dismiss the lyrics as completely fake. And I think it is safe to assume such given the next things I will discuss.
But first, another common theory is that the audio for this song became "corrupted" when someone was ripping from the original source. Plausible, but boring and leaves us unsatisfied.
Dismissing the Genius lyrics and the "corrupted audio" theory, we have two more plausible theories that may serve as solid leads or conclude the mystery once and for all.
Before we discuss Theory #1, note that "Chords/Words" is actually thought to lack any words or lyrics whatsoever. It is thought to be an instrumental. This is not unlikely, seeing as though Tyler had a STOCKPILE of unused instrumentals back in the day, seen on the LOC flash drive titled "Old Demos 2011" for instance. (Source, Source)
Theory #1 - With the aforementioned possibility of the track being an instrumental in mind, let us turn our attention to something I also mentioned earlier -- "Untitled Demo [which is 1:23 in length]"
The "Untitled Demo" was eventually given the name "Track 07" or "Track 7." We'll talk more about that in a second, but for now, here's what the unsurfaced track sounds like:
Link [Soundcloud]
Link [YouTube]
Link [Minister's CD]
Some people are skeptical because of the track's similarities to "I Need Something (to Kill Me)" (which is actually called "webseries001" on the LOC flash drive), but if you listen to the two tracks and compare them, you'll find that they're actually different instrumentals.
And now for the glaring evidence. In a section above, I showed you the "Minister's CD." I have reason to believe it is authentic -- and having said that, a track named "Chords And Words" happens to appear on the album; which also happens to be the seventh track in the folder, and has a "7" in its file name. If you click on the track and listen to it, you'll find that it is the "Untitled Demo" leaked in 2018.
Whatever the case, this has almost certainly got to be the "Chords" that has been lost for so many years; but, not a lot of people are aware of the track's existence. The discovery of the track seems to be overshadowed by "Going Down," discovered simultaneously. However, there is another plausible theory I hadn't discussed yet.
TL;DR, there are too many different correlations going on at once, and it's making my brain deflate. But basically, the Untitled Demo of 2018, discovered alongside "Going Down' -- and which was renamed "Track 7" or "Track 07" -- is the same track titled "Chords And Words" on the Minister's CD given to the anonymous uploader of the Google Drive. It's all one and the same.
I am a very cautious person, though. I got a bit excited, as you just saw. However, if anyone had any reservations about this, I'd completely understand. Plus, there's another theory to discuss...
Theory #2 - REMEMBER when I talked about Maddy Joseph? I linked a tweet of hers, showcasing a photo of a CD with "Words" written on it. Many people were quick to deem this as proof of "Chords/Words" existence; however, many others were quick to disprove it -- with evidence. Contrary to Theory #1, Theory #2 attempts to disprove the track's existence.
Take another look at the Maddy Joseph SOURCE/IMAGE and we'll discuss Point A and Point B.
Point A: as you may have noticed, the tracklisting for "Words" is 3:24... which is identical to the length of the track "Hear Me Now" (Track 19 on the bootleg, the final song). Point B: the first words in "Hear Me Now" are "Words of mine, words of yours."
Oh, and Point C... note how the bootleg tracklisting lists Whisper, TB Saga, and Chords/Words back-to-back, which glaringly resembles Maddy Joseph's disc, which reads "TB Saga, Words, Whisper."
I personally find both theories to be equally plausible.

MYSTERY #2 - "Trees"

Of course, "Trees" is the fabulous eleventh track on Vessel, but from this point forward, we won't be acknowledging it any further -- only the Regional at Best version... and the one that came before it?
Since the dawn of the 19-track No Phun Intended album, many have questioned why "Trees" appears on it. I mean, most NPI's have a playable "Trees" track... but it's identical to the one from Regional at Best. Autotune and everything. So, was it recorded during NPI and then re-released on RAB? There's a chance... but eh, it's rather unlikely. I'm sure many can notice the drastic quality change when comparing the RAB "Trees" to the rest of the tracks on NPI. Tyler Joseph simply didn't have the skills to do something as ambitious or well-produced as RAB's tracks -- when recording NPI. Not to mention the glaring sonic difference -- in genre, style, production.
As disappointing as this will sound though, I truly think that there is no existing NPI version of "Trees" on the internet.
And yet... that isn't to say it doesn't exist. Allow me to explain.
I've referenced THIS INTERVIEW twice now, and I'll reference it again. It is the "Twenty One Pilots Podcast," a fan-made podcast by Christopher Robinson. In his interview with former bassist Nick Thomas, he asks, "When you guys did 'self-titled,' were some of the tracks from Region at Best around at the point, and you just kind of didn't use them for that album and decided 'we'll come back to this when it gets to be time'?"
Nick: Yeah, I think so. I think there's severaal tracks on Regional at Best that either were reimagined from 'self-titled,' or that we had been playing in shows that we didn't put on self-titled. Yeah, there's several tracks. In fact, I think 'Trees' actually ended up on Regional at Best instead of 'self-titled.'
Ladies and gentlemen, this might be one of the biggest questions ever (potentially) answered. This is huge. First off, while not entirely NPI related, Nick Thomas just revealed that "Trees" was not written FOR Regional at Best but was originally written around the time of self-titled. It verbatim "actually ended up on Regional at Best instead of 'self-titled.'"
Henceforth, it was probably a song written before the self-titled album -- in the gap between NPI and 'self-titled.' Or even during NPI. Basically, it could very well have been written before 2009 -- in 2008 -- during the production of NPI. (In a section of interviews at the end of this thread, I also transcribe a part of the interview where Nick reveals he played guitar on several tracks on No Phun Intended.)
[Excursus: "Trees" was made available on the website for download between the release of 'self-titled' and Regional at Best, alongside "Slowtown" and "Car Radio."]
Finally, let us reference the "Minister's CD" once more. This is a different and less solid point -- but the track had an alternate title, "The Trees." I already discussed why I think these alternate titles are legitimate. And, just the fact that "Trees" potentially has an alternate title really supports that this was an early song.
Genius acknowledges that it is one of the band's "oldest songs." Furthermore, I swear I encountered an instance where Tyler states this is one of the first songs he'd ever written; before he even "fathomed" (I remember him using that word) being in a band. If anyone can find the source, please let me know; otherwise, I will continue to search.
Update: This article mentions that Tyler wrote "Trees" when he was "17 and in high school."
TL;DR, if there's autotune in the track, it wasn't on No Phun Intended; however, the original bassist, Nick Thomas, reveals that "Trees" was written before the release of the 'self-titled' album in 2009 -- and that it 'didn't make it onto' the album. A year before 2009 is 2008, when No Phun Intended was released. This is concrete evidence is to why "Trees" appears in NPI listings.

MYSTERY #3 - "Goner"

Apparently, Reddit has a character limit.
As of June 2021, I've split this post into two halves.

2020.12.30 17:44 horsecake22 The Big Bend 100 - a Tale of Searing Heat and Frigid Cold

The Big Bend 100 - a Tale of Searing Heat and Frigid Cold
When: December 10th - 13th, 2020
Distance: 100 total miles, with an even split between the national and state parks. The route breaks down as such:
trail=49 mi
dirt road/4WD roads=29 mi
sandy arroyo=14 mi
off-trail route finding=5 mi
paved road=3 mi
Conditions: Highs in the mid 90s. Lows in the high 20s. Long exposed desert hiking, during a historically dry and hot year. That didn’t stop the desert from pounding me with rain on the first night. More on that later.
Lighterpack: https://lighterpack.com/capkvl
*There’s a TLDR and a gear review section towards the bottom of the post, if you don’t want to read this long winded chronicle about a hike I did. Here’s my instagram, if you wanna see small overviews of each day, with corresponding pictures.
Useful Pre-Trip Information:
I wrote a post over at ULTexas, where I go into considerable detail on the logistics of this thru-hike.
Day 1 - 30.22 Miles
“I love your jacket, where did you get it?”
“Oh, THANKS! It’s Lulu, of course!”
“I need to get the fuck out of the Basin”, I thought very quietly to myself.
Even with an early morning start, the famous Chisos Basin was already becoming crowded. As I was detaching my car key from its keychain, I eyed an old friend; the Nitecore Tube. At nine grams, it’s the definition of ultralight. It actually used to be my main torch before I switched it out for the NU 25, and rehomed it to my everyday carry. With only nine hours of sunlight available during the day, and a waning moon, I decided to chuck it into my ditty bag at the last second. A fateful decision, it would turn out.
I slung my Cutaway onto my back and set off. The Basin was practically teeming with life, and not just with suburbanites. Birds and squirrels danced from tree to tree, as herds of mule deer lazily grazed just off trail. As I started my descent into Blue Creek Canyon, I ran into a gentleman with a ULA pack. I may have tuned him into this sub, as he was finishing the Outer Mountain Loop and was interested in shedding a bit more weight off his back. If you’re reading this, how’s it going D? The line between ultralight and ultralight_jerk can be thin at times, huh? Can’t wait for your shakedown post: )
Blue Creek Canyon is a personal favorite of mine in Big Bend, its tall walls and gentle limestone spires loom over as you walk by. I hiked past Homer Wilson Ranch and paused a moment. Everything so far had been familiar territory, and I was about to venture into the unknown. The further you travel from the Basin, the less information there is about the route.
With the next step, I was on the road. Literally. It’s a three mile road walk to Chimneys, and a bit dicey at times. More than once I had to step off of the road and bushwack through deep thickets of thorns to avoid an upcoming Ford F-150 (it’s Texas, y’all). The temperature kept climbing as I baked on the asphalt, but the turn off finally came and I walked on to the Chimneys.
The Chimneys are a rock outcrop on a desert floor void of any other geographical features. The petroglyphs there are cool, and you can do some minor bouldering. I was more interested in shade though, as the temperature was hitting 87 degrees.
Why didn’t I brought my umbrella for this?
I swig of water later, and I was off again. I could have stayed there in the shade, but the BB100 is all about your water strategy. Especially true of a dry year, but there are hardly any reliable water sources in Big Bend. To remain stationary and drink water, is to shorten your supply of liquid gold without insuring your next source. I was happy I could easily put in the long miles between the few reliable sources of water there are out there. That was MY strategy at least.
Santa Elena Canyon drew closer as I made my way down Old Maverick Road. The popular Terlingua Abajo campsite came and went, and Terlingua Creek opened up as I rounded a corner. The word ‘creek’ doesn’t do it justice. This tributary of the Rio would be called a river in any other setting. It was MASSIVE. Ducks live there year round. In fact, its size created a bit of a problem.
How the hell am I supposed to cross this thing?
As I worked out where to cross the Terlingua Monster, I chugged water. I was so effin thirsty. My watch had read 93 degrees an hour earlier, but grey clouds had started to gather, and as the sun began to set, the temperature also began to fall. I was starting to worry I would have to set up camp and find a crossing in the morning. I scouted for about 20 minutes, all the while chugging water.
When was the last time I peed?
I was able to find a beaver dam of sorts, crossed the creek, and stepped into an oasis. After all my years of desert travel, I had never seen a true wild oasis, I realized. It was as loud as forest, with the sounds of living insects and birds. I barely made any ground as I stared around.
I felt great, even after a thirty mile day, so I decided to keep moving. As I stepped further from the creek, the oasis thinned, as did the trail. Eventually, there was nothing to follow at all. I picked an Eastern heading, and followed dry creek beds to the base of the Mesa de Aguilla. Light became dimmer and dimmer, and soon after the sun set, I reached for my NU 25.
Click. Nothing.
What?
Again, click. Nothing.
...WHAT? Fuuuuuuck.
It wouldn’t turn on. Just as I came to that realization, the dark clouds above began to sprinkle.
What the actually living fuck is happening right now?
In a split second, I made the decision to stop. I reached back and fumbled for my keychain light. A few seconds later, it was clipped to my hat and I had light. I pulled out my tarp, but the soft dirt in the area wouldn’t hold my stakes.
“No worries,” I thought, “I can use some rocks.”
Nope. All the rocks were as small as pebbles.
...seriously?
The rain began to pick up. In a last ditch effort, I pulled out all my quilt and mattress, set up a hasty camp, and wrapped myself in the tarp on the barren desert floor. As thunder boomed, I let out a steady rumble of inaudible expletives. It was going to be a long night.
Day 2 - 26.24 Miles
My alarm went off at 4 AM, but I hardly needed it. The DCF material of the tarp had worked as an amplifier of sorts, and I had gotten to intimately know each and every drop of rain as the course of the night went on. In fact, it was STILL raining. For the record, the forecast had called for a 30% chance of scattered showers before midnight... Not too long after my alarm went off though, it dissipated slightly, and I took the opportunity to break camp and hike.
Hey, my NU 25 is working!
The rain had turned the dry creek beds at the base of the Mesa into true arroyos, or dry sandy creek beds that are hard to travel on. Travel was indeed hard, but I was happy to not be confined to my DCF tomb, and was ecstatic that my headlamp worked again. Before long, the night began to give way to the light, and the rain stopped altogether. As I gained more light, a towering abyss of darkness materialized to the West. The Mesa I was about to climb was truly daunting.
The Mesa de Anguila is one of the least visited sections of the national park. Most visitors don’t even know about it. But to desert hikers, especially those that love to backpack in the Chihuahuan Desert, it’s steeped in rich legend and history. I was most excited and terrified about this section of the route, as I had never been up there.
I reached a low point in the limestone wall, and began to climb. It wasn’t too bad, but I could see this being a terrifying venture for some hikers. It’s a pretty exposed and steep climb. I would NOT attempt this in the dark, as had been my plan the night before. In the grand scheme of things, maybe the rain and headlamp malfunction had stopped me from doing something really stupid.
I finally crested the Mesa, and was floored. I had imagined it would be a flat barren limestone block, like off of a Wile E. Coyote cartoon. I’m writing this about four days after my trip ended, and I still don’t know how to describe it well. The fact of the matter was that I had climbed into a whole new world; a snowglobe within a snowglobe of sorts. Hills, draws, canyons, and ridges still existed up here. But it was just...different somehow. As if the landscape grew in defiance of a higher power. Maybe someone else can help me describe it.
Early on, there were signs of life. I crossed a dam, left over from the pioneer days of the area, and then hiked past some large deep caves. Cairns littered the brush, but they were hard to make out until you were right on top of them.
The route on the western half of the Mesa tethers you to the desert floor and the dry creek beds in the area, broiling you alive as the temperatures in Chihuahuan Desert climb. I only had a little over two liters of water left, and there were no tinajas available. Travel on the Mesa was also blistering slow. I tried my best to conserve precious water. I'd wait until I couldn't stand my dry throat, then savor every small swig I took.
When I began to feel lightheaded, I found a small crevice in a small cliff where I could be shielded from the sun's pale harsh rays. I took the opportunity to dry my gear from last night's storm. The temperature was reaching the high 80s. With a little food in me, the break worked well enough, and I was on the trail again.
The Mesa really tested my navigation skills, as well as my mental fortitude. I got lost A LOT out there. The trails were faint, and the geographic features inside of the Mesa were indistinguishable from one another, making navigation incredibly hard. At one point, I became mesmerized by a green flowery valley, and lost 20 minutes following the wrong set of cairns. Despite its challenges, I'd like to plan further expeditions into the Mesa. This place is wild, in every sense of the word.
As the afternoon continued, and I reached the western half of the Mesa, travel became easier. I picked up an old pack trail, grabbed a ridge, and made my way to Lajitas. As I descended, I could see the Rio Grande off in the distance.
Back on the desert floor, I hiked into town, and waved a hello to Clay Henry, the mayor of Lajitas. He also happens to be a very dapper looking goat. I refilled my water at the Barton Warnock Visitors Center. Unfortunately, it was late in the day and so I couldn't grab a backcountry permit for the state park.
Hmmmm. Well…I'll be passing the Sauceda Visitor Center tomorrow, so I’ll make it my business to get there before closing time, and square away my permits and fees.
I continued into the state park, as light rapidly fell from the face of various Chiuahuan mountain ranges. At which point, the wildlife began to come out, as only I’ve seen it do a few times at night. Crickets chirped. Squadrons of Javelina snuffed and rooted for sustenance, just off trail. Coyotes sung about the new possibilities the night could bring. Perhaps a fresh kill? All accented by small meteors dashing across the sky. While I passed through the desert in silence, like a ghost.
Day 3 - 24.66 Miles
My alarm went off at 6 AM, but I laid still for a long while, as I watched the tail end of the Geminid meteor shower. There were only one or two per minute, but as a city dweller most of my life, I may as well have been watching the movie “Armageddon”. The crescent moon and Venus eventually ended the bombastic celestial show, and pulled the sun from below the horizon.
Is this what camping is like?
I don’t think I’ve ever slowed down. Even in the default world, I'm running around at breakneck speeds. To finish assignments. To complete deadlines. To make a meeting. I think I’d like to slow down for a while, when I get back. Yea, I think I’d like that.
As I finally got going, my eyes caught the many things that I had missed during the night hike. The deep red of the desert mountains. The abundance of trees that live in the canyons of Big Bend Ranch State Park. The water seeping from the cliff sides. Better yet, the amount of water everywhere.
Why isn’t the state park more popular?
Yet still, I wouldn’t trade it for watching a meteor shower while hiking, or the sound of dozens of coyotes singing what I imagine were Christamas carols.
Part of my day involved a steady gain of elevation from Lajitas. The other part was walking through more water fed pools of life. The Banos de Madrid were particularly beautiful. I actually lost the trail for a few minutes, as I lost myself in exploration. Orchards of yellow trees lined Fresno and Chorro Canyons.
The climb continued, and eventually I reached an overlook where I could see the full length of the Banos. And then, that’s when I had a fateful encounter with a rock. As I made my way to the edge of the overlook, a rock which SEEMED to be able to bear my weight... could not. It slipped underneath two small rocks as soon as I stepped on it, and my leg got swallowed into the resulting hole. As I stopped, I pitched forward, slammed my shin into another rock, and the full contents of my front pocket careened forward and out to a rocky ledge just below.
My first thought was, “...OWWWW. WHAT THE FUUUUUCK?!?!?!?”
...As were my second, third, and fourth thoughts. After a half minute though, I was able to get my shit together. I pushed myself out of the hole to survey the damage. My leg was split open and gushing blood, but nothing besides my spirit was broken.
At least I’m hydrated enough to bleed.
I made my way down to the ledge and collected my things. What I didn’t know at the time was that my NU25 had also been launched into the desert, never to be seen again. I wouldn't come to realize this for quite some time.
Navigation was hard at times, after the Banos. The trails were crisscrossed by game trails, or had been eroded by wind and rain into extinction. After the Mexicano Overlook, the views became less frequent and I entered what I like to call “the microwave.” Meaning the trail takes you up and over a small hill, just to have you come down the other side and climb the next hill. In Big Bend, it also means the temperature picks up. It was SCORCHING in that microwave.
After a few hours of the microwave, I reached some dirt roads and made my way over to the Sauceda Visitor Center. I was greeted by the NICEST state park ranger I’ve ever had the pleasure of speaking to. However, she told me that they stopped writing permits for the BB100 recently and that I may not be allowed to continue my hike. She went into the back to check out an old email, and to speak with a supervisor on the phone. I only heard one end of the conversation, but it didn’t sound like it was going well for me. After fifteen minutes or so, she came back with a sheet of paper and a smile.
Holy Pmags, I’m IN!
The permit took a while to finish, and a crowd of about ten people started to form behind me. I knew I was losing precious daylight hours too, but I considered myself really lucky to get the chance to legally finish my hike. Permit in hand, I thanked the ranger profusely and made my way around the corner to refill on water, throw away trash, and repack all my gear.
The next person in line walked up to the ranger, and started to ask about car camping spots near the border of Big Bend National Park.
“Why don’t you ask that fella around the corner about the national park? He just came from over there. Took him about 70 miles to get here,” the ranger added.
“...He walked over here,” one man asked.
“Sure he did. He’s on a bit of a long walk actually, and has another 30 miles left. Should be done tomorrow, I think,” the ranger said.
That last bit of information sent the small crowd into a raucous. “Crazy,” one woman said. “That’s incredible.” one father said. A small smirk managed its way onto my face. I have to admit, in that moment, I felt kinda cool.
The moment passed quickly though, as it was in that moment I noticed my lack of a headlamp. After another short burst of creative expletives, I forced myself to take a series of deep breaths. There was nothing else that could be done about the situation. I slung my pack again, and briskly made some miles on the open road before entering my first arroyo. The next few miles would all be along these sandy creek beds that line the canyons in this area.
I was astounded by the views. The canyons held an abundance of beautiful trees, and the canyon walls themselves looked formidable and strong. There were signs of wildlife everywhere as well, and at one point, I rounded a corner and came face to face with a mighty bull with matching horns. The one and only time I’ve come across a bull in the wild, it bluff charged me before I was able to convince it that I wasn’t worth the hassle. This regal fella let me pass though, as it lazily munched on grass.
I passed some sizable tinajas, and slot canyons as well. In fact, sometimes the two features combined, and I would have to scrabble off to the side to find a pass, closer to the canyon wall. This was actually a lot of fun, but as the light in the canyon became golden behind the yellow trees, I knew my time was limited.
Eventually, the sunlight failed altogether and I had to reach back for my keychain light. I clipped it to my hat and adjudged the lumens so I could see the area right in front of my feet. It wasn’t that bad actually. This section of trail all takes place in these arroyos, so navigation was straight forward; just follow the canyon. I came to a small intersection, where I had the option to leave the arroyos for about a mile or two, or stay in the canyon and follow it to a small intermittent creek.
I chose to stay in the canyon so as to avoid potentially losing the trail on a barren ridgeline. Travel and navigation remained easy, but what I didn’t notice at the time was how the canyon was narrowing. Without my knowing, I was being funneled into tighter and tighter spaces.
I came across a small tinaja, and skirted it to the side. Down a small rock or two, and back onto level ground. The process repeated a few times, each time the tinaja becoming a little larger and deeper, and the steps became larger and steeper. Eventually, I came across a shallow but large tinaja. It was close to 10 PM, the temperatures were getting colder and colder, and if I wanted to cross this body of water I would have to get my feet wet. I looked at the map, and saw I was close to the intersection with the creek. I had another ten or fifteen minutes left in the canyon, so I decided to cross the tinaja. I took a small jump down, and as I reached the other side of the tinaja, I found myself boxed in all four sides.
…..fuck me, shit. I’m fucked.
The next ledge with level ground was about thirty feet below me. It held an even bigger and deeper tinaja. The canyon walls hugged me on each side. And without realizing it, where I had just jumped down had been a large wall as well.
I allowed myself to panic for thirty seconds, before forcing myself to calm down and brainstorm. My best option was the wall to my right. It was only about fifteen to twenty feet tall, and had a slight slope that ended in what seemed like a rocky ledge. It lacked any holes though, and only offered a rough surface for hand and foot holds.
I allowed myself another thirty seconds of panic before turning on my In-Reach, taking one deep breath, and scaling the wall. I was like a small arachnid crawling up a tremendous tree. I was not very graceful, I must admit. But I was fast, and after some spicy moments, I was able to pull myself up to the shallow ledge.
I let out a third string of creative expletives that echoed off the canyon walls and into the densely packed starlit night. The ledge dropped off to one side, but continued back along to the canyon to where I had just come from. I couldn’t continue forward, but I felt lucky enough to make it out of the canyon in one piece to not really care all that much. After one or two more spicy spots, I found my way out of the arroyo and onto actual trail.
I’m really surprised I could follow the faint trail, but my senses were probably dialed up to eleven after Spiderman-ing my way out of that slot canyon. That little flashlight was working overtime. I met up with Terrenos Creek, whose creekbed was both dry and wet at times. After a few more miles, I found a small nook that was protected by an overhanging tree branch. I was mentally beat, so I took the out and made a hasty camp for the night.
Day 4 - 17.29 Miles
Truth be told, there wasn’t supposed to be a Day 4. I had expected to finish around 3 AM and crash at the Western Terminus until a friend picked me up at noon. But as you can see, loads of unplanned stuff happened, and I still had a handful of miles to go. Lucky for me though, my legs were good for it.
I swung my pack on one last time, turned on some “Daddy Issues” and “Descendants,” and crushed some miles. By the time the sun came up, I was peddling my way out of the arroyos and onto discombobulated jeep trails.
I gained elevation pretty quickly, and as I did, the wind whipped me left to right and back to the left. A cold front must have come through during the night. “Oh well,” I thought, as I continued to move forward.
The last cool thing I saw on this trip was a family of fat javelinas walking on a ridge above mine. These guys were HUMONGOUS. Very rarely have I seen a wild hog in the daylight too, but who the hell would want to mess with these guys?
Noon came and went, but I was still a mile or two out.
Fuck.
I kept on chugging, this time dialing up my speed. I finally crested the last big hill on the trail and saw my friend's truck, followed by a large cloud of dirt. I took off at a sprint. I was late, and was afraid they’d leave if they didn’t see me at the trailhead. You see, this “trailhead” is nothing more than a speck of dirt on a long windy road in the middle of nowhere. She could easily miss it and keep driving into Mexico.
Luckily, she stopped. I could see her as she stepped out of the truck, and I waved at her with my trekking pole. She waved back(!), prompting me to slow down to a walk, and then a crawl. I was spent. I was able to make it across the finish line, but collapsed onto her truck the moment I didn’t have to bear my own weight anymore.
It’s over. I can drink all the water I want.
TLDR: Desert hiker is humbled by the Big Bend area, but sees some cool shit along the way.
Lightning Round Gear Review:
Gryphon Gear Aries 30 - the desert is an intimidating place in winter. Just look at the temperature swings I expereneed. Highs in the mid 90s, which drained and dehydrated me, with lows in the high 20s, which gave me numb fingers after a few minutes of hiking with bare hands. Weather in general is very volatile in the desert, just take a look at my GRT trip report. Hell, it rained the first four days of my NOBO PCT attempt. I wanted a quilt I knew could handle that challenge, and after MONTHS of debate, I decided the Aries 30 would ensure a comfortable trip. You can read more about the specs here, and how it stacks against a more familiar quilt, but after this trip, I believe this quilt can face any challenge, with toasty draft-free nights. At times, it was almost too much quilt. But that’s a far better problem to have, then the quilt not being warm enough. Quilts are easy to vent anyway.
Uberlite - The short version, more specifically. This was the first time in years that I tried my hand at a 20 inch wide inflatable pad. I like to use CCF, and only occasionally use inflatables. When I do, they tend to be wider. But I didn’t mind the width at all, especially when I slept on my sides. I wouldn't trust it to survive the desert by itself, so I paired it with my ⅛” Thinlight. That combo really worked well on this trip.
Uncrustables - a month ago, in the Weekly Thread, I mentioned that these are my go-to breakfast and dinners. I still think they’re fine, but on trips or ressupplies longer than four days, I think I’d like to supplement these with homemade wraps or jerky. I noticed on my last day that they had become drier and less flavorful, the longer they stayed out of the freezer. Especially the ones that were crushed inside my pack.Proceed with caution.
NU 25 - I just bought a replacement for the one I lost on this trip. Some of you may be thinking, "woah, I wouldn’t trust that headlamp after it gave you soon much trouble." But you have to realize that I used this headlamp for almost three years. Not just on backpacking trips, but on early morning trail runs. So multiple times a week, every week, sometimes for hours on end. Sure it acted a little funny on my first night of this trip, but after that much abuse, it was bound to start acting weird eventually. Maybe it was even serendipitous to lose it on that overlook, on my third day. I still think it’s a great headlamp.
Nitecore Tube - If there were an MVP for this trip, it would be this little guy. What a clutch decision to bring it along at the last second. It saved my ass, TWICE, while I was out there. If you don’t really plan to do much night hiking, or want to have a go at a XUL set up, I’d take a hard look at this affordable torch. Especially with this mod to clip it to your hat. It overperformed, given its weight.
Training - After my trip to the Winds this past summer, I realized that I was in decent shape, but my aerobic capacity was somewhat lacking. I spent the next four months focusing my training to become more aerobically fit, while maintaining muscle strength. It’s been a fun change, and this was my first ambitious multi-day trip since the Winds. I can say that I never became tired physically. Even the hardest parts of this trip were not that challenging to me, and this is a brutally unforgiving trail. What did give way were my mental facilities. I made more navigational errors, the longer the day went, and the longer I was out there. I think mental fitness is the next form of training I need to embark on.
Senchi Fleece - Made of 4409 Polartec Alpha, this is the lighter airy version of the two fleeces the company makes. I’ve owned this since April 2020, but didn’t start using it until August. After about 300 miles, and about eight days and nights of trail use, I feel confident in saying that it fits my hiking style well. Hike all day, with late nights and early mornings possible. On this trip specifically, I’d wear it at night while setting up camp. Usually with my rain jacket on top. Then wear it to sleep by itself. On the last morning, when the temps stayed in the 30s well after 9 AM, and the wind chapped the parts of my face not covered by hair, I kept my rain jacket over it. For similar hikers, this is a good three season piece that could replace a traditional mid layer. Durability hasn’t been an issue for me, during on-trail and off--trail excursions. This stuff was made for Operators, I doubt that it’ll meet its match on groomed trails.
With all that positive stuff said, let me level with you. I think yall need to chill. It’s a fleece. Any fleece would suit a similar hiker. The fleece in your closet right now, whether it be the P97, the ON Go-Warm, the Macpac Nitro, the R1, ….the Palante Grid Fleece, the Montane Allez, the Arcteryx Delta...I can do this all day…the Rab Nucleus, the Haglof LIM, the Melly, ect...all of these would fit that same bill. Put your credit card away, close down reddit, and go on a backpacking trip.
Or maybe just plan one on Caltopo. Five of you messaged me the weekend before I set off for this trip. I’m not sure what made yall pop at the same time, but please just go enjoy the outdoors with what you have. I’m very happy for the success of Senchi, but I sometimes wish this sub wasn’t so gear oriented.
I hope you don’t read the above paragraph as a “do not disturb” sign. In fact, I really enjoy talking to y’all on a one on one basis. I spent three hours this past summer, helping someone plan their WRHR trip. In real life, I helped my friend beat my GRT FKT record by shuttling them to the Eastern Terminus, and spent the 24 hours prior with them discussing the trail in great detail. I’m more than happy to discuss why a piece of gear worked or didn’t work on a specific trip, why and how I use my gear, or to help you plan your own gnarly adventures. But I find it really boring when I’m used as a point of confirmation bias, or as a justification for you to buy a new piece of gear you don’t need. Idk. I’ll probably be crucified for saying so. Oh well, I’m gonna go plan my next trip.
Future trips - I've done some really ambitious trips this year. Even my day hikes have been arduous expeditions into the unknown and dangerous. I’d like to go on some easier trips next year. Like an overnighter to a nice lake, where I drink hot cocoa or something. I’ve never done anything like that. I’m serious, I don't know how to relax. I’m too competitive for my own good, and would like to slow things down for a change.

2018.05.23 22:07 Goldscott Dyneema pants full zip shell

Hi all. Super proud of my first contribution here: https://imgur.com/a/NiH5VSG 140 g (4.9 oz)
Thanks Dutchware gear for having the materials I needed: 1.3 oz DCF, 40 inch waterproof zippers, shock cord, cord locks, and grosgrain. 1.25" waist elastic, eyelets, and snaps are from Joann fabrics.
I copied a pair of Rab 3/4 zip shell pants that I have. I need to make more room in the crotch and make it higher up, but it works for now. Range of motion is good and they'll hold up for my first trip. These homemade Dyneema pants are a lot stronger and less than half the weight. I'll be taking these to Alaska in a few days.
