VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESSWIRE / May 14, 2024 / Arras Minerals Corp. (TSXV:ARK) ("Arras" or "the Company") is pleased to announce the commencement of a regional field program across the more than 3,300 square kilometre license package it controls in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan.
Highlights of the Planned 2024 Regional Field Program:
  • The 2024 Exploration program will target licences associated with the Teck Strategic Alliance, and Arras's 100% owned Elemes and Tay projects.
  • An extensive airborne and ground geophysics program, followed by a mapping, soil sampling and drill program over the Package A and Package B Licences under the Strategic Alliance with Teck Resources Limited ("Teck").
  • A geophysics and detailed mapping program followed an initial diamond drill program targeting the Berezski and Aimandai copper targets located within the Elemes Project.
  • An initial scout KGK program followed by an initial diamond drill program on the Tay Project, targeting the 6.5-kilometre x 2.1-kilometre Induced Polarization ("IP") chargeability anomaly.
Tim Barry, CEO of Arras, commenting on the upcoming 2024 Field Program, stated, "We are very much looking forward to starting the 2024 field program. This will be our third exploration season in Kazakhstan. Over the previous couple of seasons, we have assembled an excellent team of young local geologists, gained hard won experience on how to effectively explore in Kazakhstan, and put in place robust systems which allows us to quickly assess projects and move them to the next stage. Furthermore in 2024, we are very pleased to also have our partner, Teck, working with us. They will provide invaluable additional support via their technical specialists. We are also excited to follow up on our Elemes and Tay prospects and expect to drill them later in the season after refining the targets with additional mapping and geophysics.
The 2024 field program has the potential to be transformative for Arras. We expect to drill at least three new porphyry prospects this year, which when combined with the Beskauga Project which we have under an option to purchase, means we potentially have at least four porphyry prospects controlled by the company. The project portfolio is close to incredible infrastructure and the country is quickly becoming a tier-one destination for copper and gold exploration globally as demonstrated by many of the copper and gold majors establishing a presence in Kazakhstan over the past 6-12 months."
Arras's licence package is located within the Bozshakol-Chingiz metallogenic belt, a belt of rocks that includes the Bozshakol Mine, as well as the Beskauga copper-gold-silver porphyry deposit currently under option by Arras. The licence package is composed of 17 licences and covers just over 3,300 square kilometres in area and is shown in the map below.

A budget of approximately US$2.5M for 2024 has been established for the Alliance package and will include airborne and ground geophysics followed up by mapping, soil sampling, and targeted KGK and potentially diamond drilling. The initial focus will be on Package "A" with work on Package "B" expected to commence in the coming months.
The Elemes Project - the Berezski and Aimandai Targets: The Berezski and Aimandai targets are located within the 531 square kilometre Elemes Project. The Berezski Target is an 8.8-kilometre-long copper anomaly which was announced in February 2024 and contains shallow historical drilling that has yielded notable results such as 132 meters at 0.80% CuEq and 108 meters at 0.94% CuEq from surface. The Aimandai Target is a 14-kilometre x 3.2-kilometre NE-SW trending coherent copper ("Cu") anomaly (>100ppm) which was announced in March 2024 that is parallel to Berezski and approximately five kilometers to the east and has had no known drilling.

Over the coming months, both targets will be mapped in detail along with ground geophysics to better refine the drill targets. A diamond drill program is planned to follow to test these two exciting new targets.
The Tay Project - The Tay IP Target: The Tay IP Target is a 6.5-kilometre x 2.1-kilometre East-West trending coherent Soviet-era Induced Polarization ("IP") chargeability anomaly located 28 kilometres north of the Bozshakol open pit copper-gold mine, and 85-kilometres from Arras's operational base in the city of Ekibastuz. The entire prospect is masked with unconsolidated cover believed to be 10-40m deep and has received no systematic modern exploration to date.

The Tay Prospect is strategically situated with outstanding accessibility and local infrastructure, including nearby high voltage power lines, railway, and roads.
Plans are underway to follow up the chargeability anomaly with a KGK drill program which will drill through the overburden and test the top of bedrock to understand the geology and then follow up with a diamond drillhole program to test the chargeability high.

Cautionary Note to U.S. Investors concerning estimates of Measured, Indicated, and Inferred Resources:* This press release uses the terms "measured resources", "indicated resources", and "inferred resources" which are defined in, and required to be disclosed by, NI 43-101. The Company advises U.S. investors that these terms are not recognized by the SEC. The estimation of measured, indicated and inferred resources involves greater uncertainty as to their existence and economic feasibility than the estimation of proven and probable reserves. U.S. investors are cautioned not to assume that measured and indicated mineral resources will be converted into reserves. The estimation of inferred resources involves far greater uncertainty as to their existence and economic viability than the estimation of other categories of resources. U.S. investors are cautioned not to assume that estimates of inferred mineral resources exist, are economically minable, or will be upgraded into measured or indicated mineral resources. Under Canadian securities laws, estimates of inferred mineral resources may not form the basis of feasibility or other economic studies.*
Disclosure of "contained ounces" in a resource is permitted disclosure under Canadian regulations, however the SEC normally only permits issuers to report mineralization that does not constitute "reserves" by SEC standards as in place tonnage and grade without reference to unit measures. Accordingly, the information contained in this press release may not be comparable to similar information made public by U.S. companies that are not subject NI 43-101.
Cautionary note regarding forward-looking statements:* This news release contains forward-looking statements regarding future events and Arras' future results that are subject to the safe harbors created under the U.S. Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995, the Securities Act of 1933, as amended, and the Exchange Act, and applicable Canadian securities laws. Forward-looking statements include, among others, statements regarding plans and expectations of the exploration program Arras is in the process of undertaking, including the expansion of the Mineral Resource, and other aspects of the Mineral Resource estimates for the Beskauga project. These statements are based on current expectations, estimates, forecasts, and projections about Arras' exploration projects, the industry in which Arras operates and the beliefs and assumptions of Arras' management. Words such as "expects," "anticipates," "targets," "goals," "projects," "intends," "plans," "believes," "seeks," "estimates," "continues," "may," variations of such words, and similar expressions and references to future* periods, are intended to identify such forward-looking statements. Forward-looking statements are subject to a number of assumptions, risks and uncertainties, many of which are beyond management's control, including undertaking further exploration activities, the results of such exploration activities and that such results support continued exploration activities, unexpected variations in ore grade, types and metallurgy, volatility and level of commodity prices, the availability of sufficient future financing, and other matters discussed under the caption "Risk Factors" in the Management Discussion and Analysis filed on the Company's profile on SEDAR+ on February 28, 2024 and in the Company's Annual Report on Form 20-F for the fiscal year ended October 31, 2023 filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed on February 28, 2024 available on www.sec.gov. Readers are cautioned that forward-looking statements are not guarantees of future performance and that actual results or developments may differ materially from those expressed or implied in the forward-looking statements. Any forward-looking statement made by the Company in this release is based only on information currently available and speaks only as of the date on which it is made. The Company undertakes no obligation to publicly update any forward-looking statement, whether written or oral, that may be made from time to time, whether as a result of new information, future developments, or otherwise.

This Bill was submitted by The Right Honourable Dame Youma, The Baroness of Motherwell, LT MBE PC MP as a Private Member's Bill.
Speaker,
Over the past few years, our nation has witnessed a wave of upheaval across the world, as nations returned to violent means as a method of the annexation of territory and people, a principle the world had thought was dismantled after the Second World War. As I said nearly two years ago, I shall repeat as I wish to cast reflection upon our role as a country across the global community with these matters in mind. Should we wallow in isolation, or should we stand for what is right?
When I stood at the Despatch box as Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary, or any other role, I spoke of the need for active foreign policy. Speaker, these are not just words or slogans, active foreign policy requires the United Kingdom to recognise its own duty as the mother of parliaments to defend, protect, and promote democracy and human rights internationally. It is part of this task that I present the Protected Sovereign States and Territories Bill to the parliament again, reflective of what we have witnessed over the past few years, to bring the needed legislative changes required to ensure an active foreign policy is at the forefront of the mind of the government of the day.
The Protected Sovereign States and Territories Bill is fundamentally about ensuring the recognition of vulnerable nations, whose existence is at risk of extinction due to potential conflict or collapse, continues regardless of the government of the day. This legislation would prevent a government from unilaterally revoking the recognition of the nations within Schedule 1, and the ownership of the territories within Schedule 2. As an example, I will highlight Kosovo as a nation that should be uplifted to protected independence recognition status. Kosovo is a relatively new nation, whose Declaration of Independence was recognised by our nation on the 18th of February 2008. Kosovo’s very existence as a sovereign nation is under threat each day, as an active campaign continues attempting to undermine its recognition and sovereignty. This legislation ensures that parliament’s will to stand with the people of Kosovo in recognising their independence is protected, away from the unilateral statement of a rogue foreign minister.
To alleviate any concerns, I will address some matters raised within previous debates on this topic. This legislation will not prevent the future recognition of new nations, his Majesty’s government retains this power to ensure our nation may quickly respond to fast moving scenarios. This legislation will not require conflict as an automatic means of resolution, all that is required by this legislation is for something to be done, diplomatic support covers this sufficiently. This legislation will not cripple the Government's ability to conduct foreign affairs and policy, the Minister retains a large variety of powers even on matters subject to this act to ensure the flexibility of our nation's foreign policy is preserved, whilst protecting the recognition of vulnerable nations.
With all of this in mind, and what we have witnessed over the past few years in our hearts, I urge all members to see the good that this legislation will bring, to stand with these vulnerable nations, and vote yes to this legislation.
This reading shall end on the 17th May at 10PM

2024.05.14 12:46 Puginator Uber to acquire Foodpanda's Taiwan business for $950 million, creating a potential monopoly

Uber Technologies will acquire the Taiwan business of Delivery Hero-owned Foodpanda for $950 million in cash, as Foodpanda focuses on other markets.
The deal, subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in the first half of 2025, the firms said in a joint statement on Monday.
In a separate agreement, Delivery Hero will sell $300 million in newly issued ordinary shares to Uber.
“We need to focus our resources on other parts of our global footprint, where we feel we can have the largest impact for customers, vendors and riders,” said Niklas Östberg, co-founder and CEO of Delivery Hero.
Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, senior vice president of delivery at Uber, said the Taiwan market is “fiercely competitive” and the acquisition would help them grow in the market “where online food delivery platforms today still represent just a small part of the food delivery landscape.”
Foodpanda is one of the largest online food and grocery delivery platforms in Asia with a presence in markets including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, The Philippines and Hong Kong. In 2016, Germany’s Delivery Hero acquired the company.
Taiwan’s food delivery market is dominated by Foodpanda and Uber Eats. Data from insights platform Measurable AI up till August revealed that Foodpanda had a 52% market share by order volume in Taiwan, while Uber Eats held the remaining 48% share.
The deal would be one of the largest international acquisitions in Taiwan, not including those in the semiconductor chip industry, according to the joint statement.
Delivery Hero said in February it had ended talks to sell its Foodpanda business in selected Southeast Asian markets. Östberg told CNBC the same month that the firm was “happy” to hold on to its Foodpanda business in Southeast Asia “forever.”

2024.05.14 10:17 BelfastBodyBuilder Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly and the Chief Constable must learn that journalism is not a crime

https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion/columnists/malachi-odoherty/gerry-kelly-and-the-chief-constable-must-learn-that-journalism-is-not-a-crime/a213558458.html
Does Gerry Kelly have anything in common with Sir John Profumo? This question flummoxed me when raised by Master Bell, the judge hearing my application last December to have Kelly’s defamation writ against me struck out. “Let us consider the case of the former minister of war,” said the judge, sounding pretty much like a professor conducting a tutorial. Profumo had to resign his government post because he had been discovered to have been visiting a prostitute who also had a Russian diplomat as a client. He might have been jeopardising national security with post-coital pillow talk, and that wouldn’t do. But in later life, Sir John was awarded a CBE for his charitable work. Might it not be, asked Master Bell, that, in a similar way, Gerry Kelly was once a man with no entitlement to a reputation because of his engagement in violence, but that he now is a good man, a distinguished member of the Policing Board, an MLA and someone who has earned the respect of his peers? I paraphrase. I was sitting at the back of the courtroom, listening to all this and thinking: “Oh, drat! [I paraphrase again.] I hadn’t thought of that.” I doubt Kelly’s own legal team had thought of it either, but they took it up and argued that, indeed, Kelly had changed over the years. They appeared to concede something that I doubt Kelly himself would concede: that he was indeed once a bad man who did bad things, but that he was now a reputable person, a peacemaker. The evidence of this was that he had brought the IRA into the peace process and helped make Northern Ireland a better place for all of us. “Hardly a qualification for sainthood,” said the judge. Kelly might have had all sorts of reasons for bringing the IRA into the peace process, including the realisation that his past terrorism was failing. It didn’t mean that he was a better person. Sinn Fein MLA who unsuccessfully sued two journalists to ask PSNI why it is trying to silence journalists Policing Board seeks urgent meeting with PSNI over journalist surveillance Gerry Kelly libel case against Ruth Dudley Edwards struck out in another financial blow to SF MLA In the past week, Kelly has been getting a drubbing on social media because he was to meet Chief Constable Jon Boutcher to protest against police monitoring of the phone calls of journalists. Many were sneering at this paradoxical behaviour of someone who had himself been harassing journalists with unsustainable defamation writs. Who was he to be criticising the police for imposing a much lesser jeopardy on journalists? I agree with this point. But I feel uncomfortable about the story of my experience with Kelly being used to undermine criticism of the PSNI for spying on journalists. That journalism is not a crime is a lesson that has to be learnt as clearly by Gerry Kelly as by the Chief Constable. Still, Kelly has brought this derision on himself. A consequence of the superb and eloquent ruling of Master Bell that Kelly, unlike John Profumo in his later years, has no moral compass will echo down the years. The case was referred to again in a recent article in the Irish Times about Ireland’s demotion in the ranks of countries which allow press freedom. The paper reported that Ireland had dropped from second to eighth place in an annual global index of press freedom published by Reporters Without Borders. Ireland is now regarded as a jurisdiction “where politicians have subjected media outlets to judicial intimidation”. My case was outside that jurisdiction but was included in the story to illustrate how many of these cases similarly arise from within Sinn Fein. This is some achievement for the party that proclaims a concern for human rights. It has tarnished Ireland’s reputation as a healthy democracy. What we are seeing here is a failure by both Sinn Fein and Kelly himself to see themselves as others see them. The feeling about Gerry Kelly when he presumes to lecture the police about the rights of journalists is that he somehow just doesn’t get how paradoxical that is; that he just doesn’t have any sense of irony, either to see it in the conduct of others or to anticipate how others might see it in him. But Kelly isn’t alone in this. He exemplifies the blinkered vision of core republicans and their inability to comprehend how others disdain their past and their cultish, on-message discipline. For them, of course, the ideology is self-evident truth and the IRA campaign was an inevitable, just and even noble response to oppression. Michelle O’Neill says we empathise with Palestinians here because we too suffered as they did. Well, some among us did, but I couldn’t claim, with a straight face, talking to a mother sitting in the rubble of Gaza, that my life has more in common with hers than, say, a London taxi driver has. I do have something in common with the Jew who gets called to account for the actions of the IDF, for I was often patronised in England by people who assumed I was an IRA supporter. In Carál Ní Chuilín’s humility before the UK Covid-19 Inquiry we saw something extraordinary, though — a former IRA militant accepting that she had done wrong in attending the funeral of Bobby Storey, the one Gerry Adams called the crann mór, the big tree. She had insulted us by putting the opportunity to honour Storey above sympathy for those who could not honour their dead. But she gets that. She empathised — and the power of the impact of that was accentuated by the rarity of republicans accepting criticism. Is Ní Chuilín’s way the future and Kelly’s the past? It seems almost too much to hope for.

2024.05.14 09:33 OkaoSirnai What is the minimum ammount of verbs a conlang should have?

I have recently been thinking of how many verbs are needed to make a functioning language and make it comprehensable.
As it is now, my language, Akit, has a few verbs: to be, to have, to walk, to create/group, to destroy/separate and to cry(maybe not necessary). (I can't remember any more).
As for some usefull verbs such as "to burn" or "to heal", i compose the verbs using nouns.
Ex. To burn> to fire> fiorir. [Fio.ʀiʀ] (Fire (fior)+verb suffix (ir))
To heal> to put blood into> inlorir [in.lo.ʀiʀ] (Inside prefix (in)+blood (lor)+verb suffix (ir))
For the non-derived verbs, are there any essential ones that i should add? Please let me know
(P.s. thanks gor all the help, i decided to settle with 6 non-derived verbs: -To be: Air [a.iʀ] -To have: Oir [o.iʀ] -To move: Iair [i.a.iʀ] -To create: Ilir [il.iʀ] -To destroy: Ihiir [ih.i.iʀ] -To sense: Ioir [i.o.iʀ]
And as for the rest of the verbs, i settled instead with a simple system: The verb is comprises the noun+ir, as it is a verb in the infinite form. An I is added to the pearson prefix if the noun starts with a consonant To make the verb more precise, add any prefix ([in] if it takes place inside the subject, [si] if it takes place outside) to specify the position of the verb in confront to the subject
Ex. Ti kori sinia ti siar [ti kò.ʀi si.nì.a ti si.àʀ] The dog drinks (moves inside) the water
And as for anyone who asks how it should be if the dog is moving in the water, it's
Ti kori sia in ti siar [ti kò.ʀi sì.a in ti si.àʀ] The dog moves into the water
Thanks again to everyone)

2024.05.14 08:39 TheSentinelScout I’m pretty sure I’m an INTP, but I want an objective view.

Just a disclaimer, I have ADHD, and I do follow CPT/cognitive personality theory.
— My parents (specifically my mom), is religious, but they’re never forced any of us (me and our siblings) to believe in the religion. Just participating in the festivals and certain rituals was/still is expected, though.
—If I were to spend the entire weekend by myself, I’d honestly feel kinda lethargic and dead inside—not because of lack of socialization, but because the vibes of the house is off when there’s no one. I can tell someone’s out of the house just by the pure vibes I’m getting. It feels weird even with one person gone (we’re a family of five; me, my younger brother and sister, and mom & dad).
—My relationship with movement and surroundings, is that I think I have great spatial awareness. I’m able to carry and do things in certain ways in order to avoid any pointless harm (such as avoiding to accidentally hitting the door on my leg as it closes). The type of activities I do tend to engage in outside is mainly just focusing on what I’m thinking about when walking outside, or just waiting to go back home.
—I’d say I’m pretty curious—I’ve always wondered why something makes me feel a certain way, for example, in lit & comp we recently learned about film composition, and after learning some of the stuff, I was able to spot it in the shows and videos I watched. After said lesson, I was always wondering about whether or not if the creators I watched (especially on YouTube) actually used said film composition, but it’s definitely interesting to look for.
—I wouldn’t necessarily enjoy taking a leadership position, but I’m willing to do so, especially if a project in class is summative/part of our grade. I’d be the leader if no one else had already taken up the position. It does make me feel quite nervous when I am in said position, though.
—I’d consider myself pretty coordinated. I know exactly how much milk to pour in a certain glass, and I know exactly where on the fingerboard of my violin each note is. I can also catch myself when I’m about to fall pretty well.
—The past in my opinion, is something that can give you knowledge for the future. Basically, it gives you the info for what not to do in the future, and how to avoid X circumstance, the best way forward, etc.
—The future on the other hand, I believe is kinda something you could plan for, or have a very vague idea of, but you can’t necessarily do anything about in the present. It’ll come when it comes.
—And for the present, I believe that it’s the most “calm before the storm” scenario. Its characteristics can only be defined by the current situation that’s happening; there’s nothing you could do to mitigate it, other than continuously plan for its eventual outcome.
—If they’re asking for something like asking for a charger or something (such as in school), I’ll generally decline unless they’re my friend, because it just takes so much unnecessary effort to pack up your charger. If it’s something I’m interested in helping with though, I’d gladly throw up word vomit at them, and then usually regret it later on. Basically, I’ll help someone if it’s no effort involved in my side and/or if I have a deep interest in the subject they need help on.
—Productivity isn’t as important to me as much as efficiency is, but productivity does tend to make me feel good. I often find myself wondering if my attention to the efficiency is actually a result of my obvious laziness. Like, I would literally pack my tiffin box in a certain way in my lunch bag so that when I take it out of my back pack, it isn’t all leaning to one side. I’ll also always wear my jacket everywhere because they have pockets, and I’m always like, “what if it rains by chance?” And I’ve actually been saved by my jacket multiple times that way.
—I’d say I’m decent at strategizing. I could use it effectively, but I just end up not putting the plan into use, because I either don’t have the motivation, or the deadline has been so long past that it isn’t worth it anymore.
—Freedom of thought, and expression. Also the freedom of being able to silently judge others. Mostly because I just want to be able to have/own my thoughts and opinions, if that makes sense?
—The “highs” in my life may look like when I’m able to turn in assignments on time, not feel complete demotivation, and able to live up to others expectation.
—The opposite of my highs. I suppose I’m in one of my “lows” right now.
—I pay attention to the world around me, but I feel like I’m never really in the present. It’s like there’s always something going on in my mind regardless of what’s happening in the foreground.
—I’d probably end up sleeping tbh. But I’d also probably start over-analyzing my understanding of a concept or subject. For example, CPT/cognitive personality theory, or MBTI. Basically, I’d be trying to find multiple ways of understanding a subject so that I could fully understand it.
—I usually don’t take much time to make an important decision usually because the thing is important. And no, I don’t generally tend to change my mind once I’ve done so.
—Yes, usually in order to avoid being out on the spot for anything. If they end up asking me their opinion, I usually try to say it in a polite manner, usually starting with, “I think X because Y,” etc. etc.
—I’d say I break rules pretty often, but they’re mainly arbitrary house-hold rules (the usuals, no phone after 10pm, no phone in the bathroom, no staying up late, etc.). I break them because in personally don’t find them logical.
—I do think authority shouldn’t be challenged as much as specific rules should be challenged. Mainly because yeah, they generally know better.
—I honestly have no idea at this point.

2024.05.14 08:39 RangedTopConnoisseur Alien X is unironically a good Christian theology learning tool

This might be the weirdest post on this sub but:
I'm currently an atheist that just loves religious and art history, but growing up I was a Catholic. One of the things about Christianity that always confused me was the Trinity - the concept that an omnipotent being was simultaneously 3 different things but also the same thing and simultaneously a "council" of the father, son, and holy spirit while being a single god confused the shit out of me.
Until I watched Ben try and argue with Serena and Bellicus to try and fix a dam 14 years ago. The fact that they are all separate personas with their own identities but are all Alien X, and exist as just 1/3 of Alien X but are still equivalently all-powerful (as-long as the other 2 give agreement) literally explained GOD to 9 year old me.
I'm not sure if that was the inspiration or the point of Alien X, but what 9 years of growing up with the church and going to catholic lessons for my first communion and whatnot couldn't help me wrap my head around, a 20 min Sunday night cartoon episode did. This show rocks, man.

2024.05.14 08:37 ballbeamboy2 So confused with Danish syntax with a negative sentence or long sentence that uses adverb/biord

I try to understand the syntax when you want to use adv/bio in a long sentence
Most of the time when there is a long sentence, the syntax would be 1st sentence, subject + adverb + verb
like Jeg ved(1st sentence) at han(Subject) ikke(adverb) er(verb) her.

However sometimes not very often, I see people use this syntax : 1st sentence, subject + verb + adv. which can be seen below.
So I have a few sentences and want you to tell one which one is correct grammatically

2024.05.14 07:49 Semper_Right ESGR Ombudsmen Training: We're Looking for a Few Good Volunteers

I'm headed to Alexandria, VA, to teach a new class of volunteer ESGR Ombudsmen. The three-day course focuses on understanding USERRA and the many issues that come during the typical "request assistance" cases commenced by servicemembers. We will give them the tools to effectively triage a case, analyze the various USERRA (and non-USERRA) issues involved in it, and to properly advise the SM and ER regarding what their rights and obligations are.
I will also be teaching the Mediation section of the course so our volunteer Ombudsmen know how to explore, understand, and resolve the various issues involved in a typical ESGR Ombudsman case. With almost 30 years of commercial litigation experience where almost every case is subjected to some sort of mediation procedure, and 17 years of working and managing ESGR Ombudsman cases, I am quite familiar with the processes I'm going to teach. ESGR cases are unique in that they use all three of the typical mediation techniques.
EVALUATIVE: The first approach, "evaluative," focuses on the mediator's expertise in the subject matter of the dispute. The parties look toward the mediator to give their opinion regarding the merits of the claim and the likely remedies (recovery) if it went to trial. They use that information to gauge their likelihood of success on the merits if it can't be resolved. In this sense, the ESGR Ombudsmen will tell the parties the relevant sections of USERRA and/or the regulations so they know how the law will apply to their dispute.
FACILITATIVE: This approach is focused on evaluating the interests of the parties to detect, evaluate, and resolve underlying issues so they work toward a mutually beneficial and acceptable resolution. The mediator tempers the parties' emotions, tries to educate the parties about the other's interests and concerns, and moves them toward a resolution.
TRANSFORMATIVE: This approach is unique, and seldom used in civil litigation, since it is focused on the continuing relationship between the parties. As I teach our Ombudsmen, this is uniquely applicable in ESGR mediations since our goal is to "patch up" the relationship between SM and ER so they will have a continuing relationship. In over 98% of civil litigation cases, a continuing relationship is not an issue. However, all ESGR cases are focused on a relationship between SM and ER that will survive the mediation and a resolution. Therefore, we focus on factors that will strengthen that relationship. One of those, that is very unique to USERRA, is the fact that 38 USC 4302 actually provides that USERRA supersedes any contract or agreement that provides less than what is required by USERRA! In other words, if the final settlement agreement is less than what the SM is entitled to, that SM can later decide to pursue a claim against the ER, even if there was a signed settlement agreement! Therefore, it is advisable that the final agreement closely approximate what the SM was entitled to under USERRA, otherwise it may not be a lasting agreement.
I'm looking forward to teaching the revised mediation module for this new class of ESGR Ombudsmen. If you are interested in becoming an ESGR Ombudsman, or a volunteer for ESGR, please go to ESGR.mil or contact your local committee (you can find their contact information on the website).

2024.05.14 07:44 elscrappo3 How do you regulate yourself when you're struggling to study?

I have two subjects which is already a lower workload than normal, but I fall behind insanely quickly. I've only missed 1.5 lessons but my course is incredibly fast paced and jam packed that it's just a given for everyone that if you miss a day, you're already behind.
Having ADHD as well as POTS and also other mental health stuff on top of that makes it really difficult. I'm trying to learn content from home but it's so exhausting and frustrating. And if I get frustrated/angry enough from not understanding the content I start crying from overwhelm. Then I HAVE to stop working to calm back down and it's basically a cycle of going to sit at my desk, do work anywhere from a couple of minutes to an hour, and inevitably get overwhelmed and cry again.
I already have accommodations in place, I feel like there's not much more I can be offered. I'll get a resit for my exam and I get two attempts for every assessment, but I'm just struggling. I don't want to have to feel like this for my entire course. I'm on meds for ADHD and do typical things for POTS like salt, lots of fluids, pacing, beta blockers etc.
But I just keep having days where even though I've been so careful to not push myself and be mindful of pacing, I still don't have to energy to do as much work as I need to, because I get so emotionally dysregulated if I can't wrap my head around it.
I've done yearssss of therapy including CBT and DBT so I know a lot of calming techniques. It's just that my fuse is so short/tolerance is so low for frustration and I have to keep repeatedly regulating myself over just studying. I'm so tired and feel so dejected right now. I don't know what else to do to make this easier.

2024.05.14 07:41 elscrappo3 How to not lose my mind trying to study

I have two subjects which is already a lower workload than normal, but I fall behind insanely quickly. I've only missed 1.5 lessons but my course is incredibly fast paced and jam packed that it's just a given for everyone that if you miss a day, you're already behind.
Having POTS and also having ADHD/other mental health stuff on top of that makes it really difficult.

Update - 13th May 2024

My (F25) husband (M30) says our house will never be mine. How do I move past this?

Me and my husband have been married for almost one year, and have been together for 7.
I work a job in media while he works as a therapist of sorts.. we have been living in my inherited home that has been in my family for many years. Over the past few years, we have both agreed the house and the location is just not ideal. With the housing market being what it is, we have sucked it up and continued to live here.
Recently we were offered to purchase my husbands family home. It’s a good house that needs a lot of work but I am confident we can do what we need to for under $15,000 in renovations, so we are planning to move there and begin renovating!
We were both happy and excited until the other day when we were talking about it, out of nowhere he told me “I want you to know this house will never be yours. If we divorce or anything, you will have no right to live there anymore.” And I found this hurtful and odd. This was never a discussion in the years we have lived in our current home. I would never plan on taking his family home if we were to separate, but it felt like a stab to the heart especially when we are trying to have kids.. I told him “it would be a marital asset since I’m paying half the mortgage and half the renovations. I would never fight you for the house but I don’t plan on getting divorced” - this made him very upset. He said he would rather not move in if there’s a chance a judge would determine I had any rights over the home. Was I wrong? How do I move past this with him?

So from what I understand. It’s a family home BUT you are paying on the mortgage halfsies and paying to renovate? And he said no to you having ownership at all? Then hell nah. He can purchase it on his own. Renovate it on his own. And you keep yours as a backup from this point forward. Rent it out and YOU keep that income.
OOP: This opened my eyes. We are going to definitely have another conversation about how we would go about this purchase.

I really hope you don’t sell your home and make contributions to something he straight told you wasn’t yours.

Update - 1 day later

So there was a lot of questions from many people who saw my last post, so I figured I would answer some of them and also update on the situation.
My family home was inherited. There was no mortgage. We paid our bills and taxes evenly between the two of us, and same with any repairs the home needed.
His mother is selling us the house at a $25,000 discount from what she listed it for on the market.
My husband was not on the deed to my family home. This home was not going to be sold. It is a home that has been passed down exclusively to family members at virtually no cost, so a mortgage hasn’t been held on it in many decades. The house would be going to my sister as she is welcoming her second child soon!
Now for the update:
Me and my husband agreed to go to breakfast together this morning since our Mother’s Day plans didn’t start until lunch. At breakfast I brought up the topic of the house we are going to buy. I told him about how the things he said hurt my feelings and made me insecure about where he stands in our marriage.
He told me after seeing his dad lose his family home in a divorce, it was scary to think our kids could possibly lose it if we were to separate. He apologized and told me he never ever thought of getting a divorce, but nobody does until it’s happening. He said he was wrong to say the things he did and that he let anxiety control the way he spoke and it was unfair to me.
We agreed that I would be put on the deed, and agreed to start the process of a postnup agreement for the home among some other things. I addressed feeling like maybe he had a feeling he was going to leave or cheat and that’s why he was so defensive. He felt hurt by that and told me that was his fear when getting married, that he would be cheated on or worse, have kids involved in that mess. I told him I felt the same.
We both agreed the most comfortable we would feel would be us BOTH being on the deed to the home, and getting a postnuptial agreement with an infidelity clause. We are both anxious people and I understand where he was coming from with wanting that. It stung a bit at first that he wanted an infidelity clause but we agreed it would do nothing but benefit us both if either of us were to go beyond our marriage in that way.
So tldr- we are both being put on the deed, we are getting a postnuptial agreement + infidelity clause and we had a very mature and emotional conversation about how we felt. Thank you all for your advice, it gave me a very good idea of what to research before I brought it up to him and we are setting up a meeting with a lawyer to start the process on Monday!

I’m glad that everything seems to have worked out :)
OOP: Very much so! I think I was a bit dramatic about the things he said and he was a bit harsh and not thinking through what he said. It happens to the best of us but my mind is put at ease now thankfully

call-me-mama-t
I don’t think you were dramatic at all, you were protecting yourself. Good for you! Since you are newly married, this is a really great lesson for you both. Learn to communicate, turn to each other when you’re upset about something. Meaning don’t go complain about your spouse to friends, you talk to him and figure it out together. Great outcome!

I am not the OOP. Please do not harass the OOP.

2024.05.14 06:39 musthave-floral If we could only turn back time

I did not want this to be a lesson, a forest fire, a disaster. But as I close my eyes and I find you in my memories, I find that you only exist there— What I wanted to see you as– What /I/ wanted to see. How foolish of me.
Perhaps I built all of you up entirely, each glance was nothing more than an agreement of humans. And it burns my heart to think about it really, just about you wanting someone else, someone who isn't me. To think that I wasn't anything to you– I mean, I don't know what we were, but I miss it.
With tears spilling from my cheeks and the silence of your voice, I untye the red thread that you had around me, yours unraveling too. –
"I need to let go," she sighs, and her stomach tightens as they smile sadly to one another. Eyes meeting. Green to brown, brown to green. Searching for permission but never responding with answers. He had always felt so warm and familiar, solid and safe she thought.
His eyes had once stolen away all of her words when the first met, and now they had again.
Maybe we'll meet in 10 years at that coffee shop down the road? Start over? A thought. But it never left her lips and he waited patiently anyway, almost like he was thinking the same thing she was and all while the sun is setting slowly behind them. A wave is the last wink she'll get. And then it's like he never existed.
– You are not mine to have, but I will think of you often.
Until the next life, all the love of me, the moon and the in-between will await you. I just can't tug on the thread any longer. I'm sorry. It's been long overdue.
*Edit: As I laid in bed to drift to sleep your voice rings in my consciousness, the tone so clear that I nearly cried in relief. At least I can remember it, even if for just a moment. Just please don't come visit me in my dreams anymore.

2024.05.14 06:24 WideTimothy Stuff to know about MIT protest demands, research freedom, and military contracts

A week ago, someone asked why “divestment from IDF contracts is so difficult.” After the actions, suspensions, and arrests of last week, I have also wondered why protestors and MIT’s administration did not reach an agreement. Here’s an effort to explain it.
I’m looking to read the protest demands carefully and generously, then consider MIT’s constraints generously. My conclusion is that if the core demands had broad support on campus—and I can't say whether they do or do not—there are still principled, consistent reasons MIT could not agree to them.
Please add anything I’ve missed about the SAGE and MIT positions in the comments. Factual corrections or additional details are appreciated.
(If you’re here for hot takes, you’re in the wrong thread. I’m not saying what MIT should do about the demands, and I'm not sharing opinions about student protests or MIT's response. Please feel welcome to share your opinions about these in other posts about these topics.)
The demands
The core demands of the Scientists against the Genocide Encampment (SAGE) are:
  1. The immediate termination of two active faculty contracts with the Israel Ministry of Defense (IMoD)
  2. A ban on future faculty contracts with IMoD.[1]
The protestors identified these contracts in the MIT Brown Books, which provide detailed information about all sponsored research projects on campus. SAGE says the following two basic research contracts are active:
SAGE propose to end current project funding for these, but says the two active projects can proceed with alternative funding.[2] SAGE has also said a review to look at project-specific human rights risks or re-evaluate foreign military research would only be satisfactory if it ends these two contracts with immediate effect.[2]
Two facts about these demands have been widely misreported. First, the contracts appear to be funded by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), not IMoD.[4] As the “direct sponsor,” IMoD chooses which academic research proposals to fund. DoD involvement does not appear to be an important consideration to SAGE. I suspect, but don't know for certain, that ending contracts with a primary government funder could create complications for MIT.
Second, SAGE has said that “more than $11M” has been funded through DoD/IMoD since 2015.[1][3] But the data they SAGE has published duplicates balances for many multi-year awards. Once deduplicated, the amount allocated by DoD since 2015 is closer to $3.4 million, of which $3.2M has been spent.[4] The demands do not address spent research funds, only the unspent balance of the two active grants, an amount not publicly reported by SAGE or MIT. That said, the direct cost does not seem to be a material issue for either side.
Conflicts between the demands and MIT’s research policy
Meeting protestors’ core demands would require MIT to do something it has not done before: electively ban faculty from working with a specific sponsor. Doing this would conflict with the MIT faculty’s longstanding position on “research freedom,” which A) lets faculty freely choose collaborators and topics and B) limits university intervention when their research faces criticism.[5][6]
Consistent with research freedom, MIT has not previously banned sponsors or ended research contracts except when required by U.S. law. For example, when many MIT faculty said that MIT should sever all ties with the Saudi kingdom after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, MIT did not terminate any Saudi-affiliated research contracts.[5] MIT has similarly rejected calls to stop faculty research contracts with fossil fuel industry partners.
MIT’s faculty and administration have taken related public positions favoring “research openness,” including for sponsors in host countries criticized for human rights concerns like Russia and China.[5][6] These positions assert that science requires open collaboration even during foreign policy conflicts. MIT recently reaffirmed its position on openness as Congress considered new limits on U.S.-China research collaboration.[7]
SAGE argues that research freedom was disregarded in February 2022, when MIT terminated a $100M/year collaboration agreement with Russia’s Skoltech after the Russian army invaded Ukraine.[1][8] However, as a broad, organization-level partnership between MIT and Skoltech, the agreement did not implicate faculty research freedom as SAGE’s demands do.[8] MIT continues to allow faculty to work with Russian sponsors and collaborators, although U.S. State Department sanctions now restrict research collaborations with many Russian institutions, including Skoltech.[9]
The Saudi and Skoltech decisions show MIT's inflexible position on faculty research freedom, even when human rights concerns are broadly held in the MIT community. MIT exercises more discretion over non-research funding, like direct partnerships and gifts. But unless required by U.S. law or foreign policy, MIT seems unlikely to create tailored bans on faculty research sponsors.
Other policy limits on military-sponsored campus research
MIT’s existing rules for campus research limit how military-sponsored research can be conducted, but not the collaborators or subjects faculty can choose. Research projects:
These rules practically limit the military projects that can happen on campus. For instance, no research project could be kept secret from anyone else at MIT. (See [11] for reasons that MIT has always military research through conduct restrictions.)
For sponsors in some countries, MIT applies an “elevated-risk review” to faculty research proposals when the content could present risks to human rights, U.S. national security, or U.S. economic competitiveness.[12] These reviews involve both an MIT-wide faculty committee and senior administrators. They can result in project modifications, contract changes, or a refusal of MIT support.[4][12] Elevated-risk reviews are not done for approved research contracts because “the bar for administrative intervention to terminate such projects should be set very high.”[4]
There are at least two reasons an elevated-risk review would not satisfy SAGE's stated demands. First, SAGE seeks a content-independent ban on contracts with IMoD, which does not easily fit with a review process that looks at content-specific risks.
Second, since expanding these reviews would limit faculty research freedom, doing so would normally involve faculty. But getting faculty involved means that changes could not happen immediately, which SAGE has said it cannot accept.

2024.05.14 05:51 OSHASHA2 ⚠️ Beware your Biases: a lesson on Intergroup Contact Theory and why you’ve never seen a UAP (probably)

If disguised under a preposterous or “absurd” appearance, [a UFO’s] effects would be undetected for a long time. I believe this could be a key to the confrontation with UFOs. ~Jacques Vallee
In 1954 the sociologist Gordon Allport published a book called The Nature of Prejudice. In it, he and some colleagues elucidated a link between increasing Intergroup Contact and reducing Racial Prejudice. At the time this was breakthrough research; repeated contact between members of the “in” and “out” group reduces stigma toward the “out” group.
In 1954 this could be easily illustrated by the attitudes of the public-at-large toward racial minorities over the preceding 100 years – shifting attitudes toward slaves and their descendants, as well as the previous 10 years – attitudes toward Japanese-Americans over the course of WWII.
As it turns out one of the most effective ways at reducing prejudice is “equal status contact between majority and minority groups in the pursuit of common goals.”
For African slaves, their descendants, Japanese-Americans, and countless others across history, this contact has been stained with blood and tears. But contact it was nonetheless, and our stigma toward these “out” groups declined overtime as they became part of the “in” group. They became ‘American’ and their “out” group identities and goals have become, and are becoming, less stigmatized.
Today, I believe we are watching this dissolution of stigma play out en masse on the world stage. The funny thing is that this time, all of humanity is part of a microcosmic “out” group and the aliens in their UFOs are part of the macrocosmic “in” group trying to get us to adopt their goals. What then, is so unsettling about humanity that they take such a slow-going route of stigma dissolution? Why don’t they just introduce themselves as equal status individuals?
—————————∞—————————
Attitude Rebound and Stigma
A few weeks ago I made the same post in both UFOs and Aliens. The post contained what I thought to be a reasonable, logical hypothesis that could easily explain away all paranormal phenomena… Yes, all paranormal phenomena. The post got about as much attention in each subreddit, however the reactions to its content was drastically different on each subreddit.
I will admit that I was being a little overzealous in my efforts to “raise the consciousness of humanity” and was proselytizing to some folks in the comments. My B 🙇🏻. What I found very very interesting, however, was how commenters on UFOs were much more critical and reductive than commenters on Aliens, who seemed more open to my zany hypothesis and its possibilities.
Now, I am not a physicist. I can barely remember the unit circle. I got a D in calculus at university. That is why/when I decided to get a liberal education rather than a scientific one. Having said that, I am very passionate about science and the scientific method. I am a nurse by trade, and for twelve hours a day, three days a week, according to my profession, I conduct three to five “n of 1” studies and report the results of these studies to a medical doctor. My job is to experiment on human beings and document outcomes.
What I observed when I made those posts was that one community was receptive and the other was hostile. I joined both UFOs and Aliens so that I could keep up to date on the latest disclosure news. I have noticed in my time browsing these subreddits that UFOs tends to request hard, ‘scientific’ data from posters, whereas Aliens seems to have more interest in the subjective experience of posters. Of course there is a lot of overlap given the content of these subreddits.
This is all just to say that the same message may be received differently, and it’s content interpreted differently, even by the same/overlapping populations, due to the stigma some individuals harbor. So I think it prudent that we introspect and hold an awareness of our own stigmas and biases, understanding they may be seated deep in our unconscious mind. We should reconsider the things we find absurd, for in the absurdity there may be a powerful lesson.
—————————∞—————————
Thank you to those who upvoted/downvoted and commented. Thank you for participating in this community. Thank you for being unwitting participants in this accidental study, and I will leave you with this quote from Gordon Allport:
It is here that we encounter the central theme of existentialism: to live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering. If there is a purpose in life at all, there must be a purpose in suffering and in dying. But no man can tell another what this purpose is. Each must find out for himself, and must accept the responsibility that his answer prescribes.
