Synopsis:
Carlos was an ordinary software engineer on Earth, up until he died and found himself in a fantasy world of dungeons, magic, and adventure. This new world offers many fascinating possibilities, but it's unfortunate that the skills he spent much of his life developing will be useless because they don't have computers.
Wait, why does this spell incantation read like a computer program's source code? Magic is programming?

Carlos lounged comfortably on one of the mayor's fancy sofas. At 23 years old with a healthy body he really didn't need cushioned upholstery, but he liked how it felt. Honestly, he was probably more comfortable with high quality furniture than someone of his relatively low-income background should be in this world. Spoiled by the mass production factories of modern Earth, I suppose. All of this stuff here is probably handmade. Er, make that definitely handmade. Unless they have magic factories I haven't heard about, or something. He mentally shrugged. There was no point trying to change his attitudes toward furniture now. While this world might have higher prices for a lot of things than he was used to, he was also a lot richer than he was used to thanks to having become a noble lord. People would expect him to treat fine furniture as cheap because of his station.
I might have the physical habits of a couch potato, but at least I don't look like one. Too skinny. Not as skinny as Amber, though. He smiled as he watched the young woman next to him on the sofa continue animatedly expounding on their recent adventures together. She was lanky, with few curves to speak of and spindly limbs, far from any conventional picture of feminine beauty. Her hair, a slightly lighter shade of brown than his own, was cropped short. He thought she was 18 or 19 years old, but wasn't sure. Have I really never asked her age before? ... Would that be a rude question here? Regardless of her age, she had grown her confidence a lot since their first meeting a few weeks ago. She'd found her footing in a new life that she'd seized with utter determination, and he saw no sign of the shyness that she'd first greeted him with. The way her potential was finally blooming was beautiful to watch.
Carlos turned his gaze to the sofa across from them and carefully held back from laughing at the expressions Trinlen was making as Amber wrapped up explaining the events and developments they'd gone through since their introduction to him at the Royal Mage Academy. Carlos had contributed a fair amount to the explanation at first, but Amber had taken to it with enthusiasm when she arrived, and he could tell she was enjoying it. The young man in front of them, newly graduated from said academy, was on the edge of his seat and leaning forward, hanging attentively on every word. His casual attire, plain and made of cheap materials, looked thoroughly out of place on the finely embroidered velvet of the sofa, but he'd shown no sign of even noticing the finery around him. Excitement warred for control of his face with surprise, disbelief, envy, and dismay.
Amber finished her impromptu monologue, and Trinlen slowly schooled his face into a neutral expression. His voice was tense and tightly controlled. "So... In short, you're telling me that in the mere two weeks since you met me, you discovered a mana-poaching conspiracy of nobles, were abducted right under the noses of two royal guards without them even noticing, absorbed mana so fast that you gained 6 levels in a day and a half - so unfair, by the way - somehow learned an obscure portal spell from just its name and description, found evidence of a conspiracy against the Crown, and personally met a princess." He paused, then threw his hands up as he wailed in frustration and disappointment. "And I missed it!?"
Carlos threw back his head and burst out laughing. He couldn't help it. Trinlen just sounded so much like a little kid who'd barely missed out on a candy store giving away its entire stock for free. It was such an incredible light-hearted contrast with how everyone else viewed these same events that the sheer ridiculousness of it was overwhelming. Amber joined the laughter a moment later, shaking her head in amused disbelief, and after a few more seconds Trinlen started chuckling too.
Carlos's laughter eventually trailed off, and he took a deep breath to settle down. "Thanks, Trinlen. It's been a very stressful two weeks, and laughing like that helped release a lot of it. Feels good. Anyway, what have you been up to? I thought you would take a whole month to graduate?"
"Technically I only said 'next month', not that it would be at the same point in the month. But yes, this is earlier than I expected. The normal graduation ceremony is still a week and a half away." Trinlen shrugged. "They didn't explain the reasons, but after what you said I'm guessing your meeting with the princess prompted her to do something. The vice headmaster called me to his office yesterday morning, a few teachers grilled me on my classwork, and they declared I'd passed my exams. Then they told me to pack because I'd be teleported to my new employers the next day, and here I am." He sighed. "Hmph. Now I won't get to humiliate Norla in front of the whole academy when she gives her speech." Then he perked up and grinned widely. "But it sounds like you two are going to be so much fun that I'll get over it in no time!"
"I'm not sure if I agree with your idea of fun, Trinlen, but if it motivates you to help us more then that's good enough for me." Carlos chuckled again. "Anyway, do you need some time to get settled in? You might need to think about lesson plans for us too. We don't need just catalogues of incantations to learn anymore, at least not for simple ones, but I believe you learned other things in the academy too. You mentioned creating your own spells, as I recall."
Trinlen nodded. "I did mention that, yes. I'm guessing your lack of need for a catalogue is because of your newfound ability to somehow pull entire incantations from thin air? You'll have to at least tell me about the limitations of that so I'll know what I still need to teach you, but yeah, there are other things. For one thing, there's your sloppy terminology! Why does no one outside of the academy care about properly distinguishing between the states of mana? Is it really that hard to understand that calling aether, mana, and essence all by the same term obscures your meaning and often causes confusion? Or are people so stupid that they can't even understand the difference?"
Carlos blinked and exchanged a look with Amber. His comprehension aid informed him about the distinction the instant Trinlen spoke the terms. That would have been nice to know earlier. The comprehension aid is a house secret, so we should let him explain. "At least for us, it's just ignorance. I don't think I've even heard the other two terms you mentioned, and certainly no one ever explained them. So, what is the difference?"
Trinlen paused, cocked his head for a moment, and slowly deflated after his impassioned rant. "Yeah, okay, that's fair. I don't think I ever heard about it before going to the academy either." He sat up straight. "Aether is what you've been calling ambient mana. It's thin like air, and it's everywhere. Its only use is converting it to mana or essence. Mana, using the term with proper precision, is thicker but still fluid like water. It exists primarily in people or creatures and is used as fuel to supply power for spells and magical effects. Essence is hard and solid. It is the material that soul structures are made of, as well as the forms of active spells and enchantments. Am I clear so far?"
Amber answered first. "Yes, I'm familiar with each of the forms you described. I have questions about more details - so many questions - but you should get properly settled in, and maybe eat lunch, before we really get down to it. Have you spoken with Mayor Stelras yet? Do you have lodging sorted out?"
"I went by his office first. He's having someone take my luggage to an inn. The Adventurer's Haven, I think? He said something about a 'low-value target' and having an empty suite already booked." Trinlen's eyes widened. "Waaait a minute. Is he putting me in the room you two were abducted from?"
Carlos shrugged. "Sounds like it."
"Nice! Think there'll be any evidence left of how it was done?"
"Haha! Probably not by this point, but you're welcome to look. Now go get unpacked, eat a meal, and start planning your lessons for us. I'm glad you're here, but we have some other things to do too."
Trinlen nodded and stood up. "Sure. I'll be back before you miss me."
Carlos waved as Trinlen sauntered out the door. He and Amber sat in companionable silence for a while as he felt the mana - or essence? - of Trinlen's soul moving off into the distance. "Well. That was interesting. It's good to have him, but I was expecting a bit more time to think and plan before he'd get here."
"Yeah." Amber stretched and then leaned back into the sofa's cushions, luxuriating in their soft firmness. "So, how much are we going to tell him? How useful will his knowledge even be for us, now that we have, what did you call it, the reference documentation? That bit about the states of mana is good to know, but is it really relevant and important, and how much more can there be that's not in the documentation?"
"Be careful talking about that out loud, remember?" Carlos relaxed and draped his arms across the sofa's back as he focused his mind on their mental bond through Purple, their friendly dungeon core. [On Earth, we made many languages similar to the language of incantations, and we had the reference documentation for all of them. We even published that documentation free for everyone to have. Teachers for those languages were still useful, and even critically important for many people. Having access to knowledge doesn't mean you automatically understand how to properly apply it. There may be related knowledge we have no idea even exists. There could be techniques and patterns for how to use the language that are simply outside the scope of the documentation. Perhaps most importantly, a teacher can use their experience to notice a student's mistakes and correct them before they become problems.]
[Hmm.] Amber bit her lip, thinking. [Like how I knew about making soul structures and synergies between them, but had no idea about the importance of being able to examine and fix them, I suppose.]
Carlos nodded. [Yeah. And that's a really simple example. I know some that are a lot more complex, though I'm not sure how many of them are even applicable for incantations. Inversion of control, dependency injection, factory patterns...] He shook his head. [Just the context knowledge needed to be able to fully understand those could take days or weeks to teach well enough for you to use them. I could maybe explain the basic ideas faster with some simplified analogies, but that would lose so many details that I doubt it would still be useful.]
Amber paused. [... Even my comprehension aid is baffled by the terms you just said. It translated the individual words that you said, but all I got for the phrases is a confusing jumble.] She chuckled. [Anyway, I concede the point. Trinlen will still be able to teach us important and useful things. We still need to decide what secrets to share with him.]
[A lot depends on how good he is at keeping secrets. We don't actually know him all that well yet. He's certainly fun, and he seems clever, but for assessing his integrity we're leaning pretty hard on just a janitor vouching for him.] Carlos frowned in thought. [In order for him to do his job, he needs to know that we can only "pull an entire incantation from thin air" if it's a simple one. He does not need to know the full details of help, however, and most certainly does not need to learn to use it himself. That secret is a very sensitive one, where even just letting too much knowledge of it spread would lose us a major advantage.]
[Definitely. No casting help where he can hear it, and don't say anything about it that's not directly relevant for his teaching, either. Not until he's earned our full trust.] Amber lapsed into silent consideration. [We should introduce him to Purple. We'll kind of have to at some point anyway, and the really valuable thing there is Purple himself, not just the knowledge of his existence.]
Carlos nodded. [True. I think that probably is the least sensitive of our house secrets, and being able to call him through a bond with Purple would be useful.] He chuckled. [And maybe his cleverness will end up producing some good ideas for Purple to use. See if he can find a more productive outlet than pranks for his creativity. And then... If he keeps that secret well enough for long enough, we can consider trusting him with more secrets.]
Amber sent back wordless agreement.
Carlos started sitting up, lifting himself out of the comfortable cushions. "Well, we should get some food ourselves, too. And maybe introduce Trinlen to everyone else along with Purple." He stood up and spotted a letter he'd set aside when Trinlen arrived. "Oh yeah, and what do you think we should do about Kindar?"
"Wait, what's this about Kindar?"

Hi! ive been suffering from hirsutism since im 12. When i was 14 i got my facial and cheast hair removed and started taking birth control for the hormonal imbalance so that it doesnt grow back. in february i had pulmonary embolism and had to stop taking birth control and now many issues are back. for me the biggest problem is that the hair on my face and chest grew back. I can shave my face with barely any problems but when i shave or wax my chest i get a bad rash. Usually it wouldnt be much of a problem since i usually wear high cut shirts but i want to shave it when hooking up with someone because im very ashamed of my body hair.

Here Suzuha is telling Hadrian the history of the Mericanii. What’s interesting is that “men without chests” is a phrase and chapter title used by CS Lewis in The Abolition of Man. This book is Lewis’ critique of subjective/scientific morality, and a defence of traditional morality, which Lewis calls ‘the Tao’.

“We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.” -The Abolition of Man

I think these next two quotes illustrate that Hadrian and the Sollan Empire—even with all their flaws—try to conform to traditional morality or ‘the Tao’.

“Tao. It is the reality beyond all predicates, the abyss that was before the Creator Himself. It is Nature, it is the Way, the Road. It is the Way in which the universe goes on, the Way in which things everlastingly emerge, stilly and tranquilly, into space and time. It is also the Way which every man should tread in imitation of that cosmic and supercosmic progression, conforming all activities to that great exemplar.” -The Abolition of Man
“The Empire is a river, it has currents and a course. And while our movement may be limited—we are always limited. By our bodies, as you correctly noted. By our minds, by nature itself. Freedom is accepting those limitations and responding to them with humility. We cannot change nature.” -Kingdoms of Death, Chapter 14

This contrasts with other societies like the Lothrians, Extras, Demarchists, and the Mericanii, who embrace a scientific morality or try to transcend morality. But even when rejecting traditional morality they cannot escape the Tao.

“What purport to be new systems or (as they now call them) ‘ideologies’, all consist of fragments from the Tao itself, arbitrarily wrenched from their context in the whole and then swollen to madness in their isolation, yet still owing to the Tao and to it alone such validity as they possess.” -The Abolition of Man
“sweeping away the old is like knocking the foundations of a tower out from under your feet. Tradition grounds a man. Even for you Lothrians it is so.” -Kingdoms of Death, Chapter 14

Even if the Lothrians pride themselves for sweeping away traditional morality, their Lothriad still carry’s echos of the Tao:

“Let each toil for the good of all. Let there be bread, and board, and good order for all who toil.” -Kingdoms of Death, Chapter 10

The Lothrians and ancient Mericanii were also ruled by a class of people CS Lewis would call “conditioners”. We see humans being treated like livestock. The Chairs of the Lothrian Commonwealth need not adhere to the strict linguistic rules which they enforce. Similarly, we learn in Disquiet Gods that “American Princes” still managed the Mericanii machines without subjecting themselves to a cancerous fate. Lewis’ worst case scenario—the abolition of man—is realized in the Sun Eater universe.

“the man-moulders of the new age will be armed with the powers of an omnicompetent state and an irresistible scientific technique: we shall get at last a race of conditioners who really can cut out all posterity in what shape they please.” -The Abolition of Man
“critics may ask ‘Why should you suppose they [conditioners] will be such bad men?’ But I am not supposing them to be bad men. They are, rather, not men (in the old sense) at all. They are, if you like, men who have sacrificed their own share in traditional humanity in order to devote themselves to the task of deciding what ‘Humanity’ shall henceforth mean. ‘Good’ and ‘bad’, applied to them, are words without content: for it is from them that the content of these words is henceforward to be derived.” -The Abolition of Man

Hadrian does not believe that humans need to be conditioned. He sees that while the Sollan Empire has flaws (like slavery and their Palatine eugenics system), the empire is not trying to change what humanity is.

“At least the Empire protects humanity… Humanity. And mankind. The Commonwealth’s ideals were as toxic to the human animal as the surgeries and augmentations the Extrasollarians enjoyed. Each saw humanity as a problem to solve.” -Kingdoms of Death, Chapter 14

P.S. I think Sun Eater is so great on rereads for reasons like this. I made so many more connections like this on my reread. On a surface level it’s a fun story, but there are also profound themes. Btw thanks for reading if you made it this far, I know this is a bit long.

The flames of your campfire flicker as the wind howls around you. Shivering as you pull your wolfskin cloak around you, thankful for its warmth.
"Your welcome for that" a voice calls teasingly across the campfire. "And for this" she says as she lifts a leg of some beast she slew earlier and is now roasting over the fire
"Thank you" the words come from your half frozen lips, "it's nice to see your homeworld, even if loose some toes" you say with a small grin
A bark of laughter comes from your love, she tosses her hair back as she takes a swig from her mug before reaching out to hand it to you "drink this, you won't be cold anymore" a grin spreads across her face "it's no mjod, but still good stuff"
Taking the mug and feeling the warmth on your hands you take a careful sip feeling the warmth travel through your body. The plesent taste of spices spreads along your tounge.
And then the alcohol bites
You double over gasping at the burning taste as the rush of alcoholic warmth spreads through your body warming you from the inside out you hear that same bark of laughter "good stuff like I said" she reaches over to grab the mug, taking a long sip from it before letting out a sigh of appreciation "made specifically to brace you against the cold of Fenris, you won't freeze as long as you have some in your system"
After that she drains the rest of the mug before patting a horn strapped to her armor "and I made sure to bring plenty my pup" she turns her attention back to the meat cooking as you recover
It's not the first times she's made you try her drinks before. And it's not the worst you've tried, you still remember the time she handed you a cup of Mjod. The fumes alone made you fall back against her chest plate. Followed by plenty of laughter from the host of assembled marines
Sitting back up just in time for her to hand you a drumstick from the fire "eat up pup" she says holding up a larger leg "race you to the bone" as she sinks her teeth into the meat determined to beat you
Try as you might you still have a few bites left on your bone as she triumphantly dangles a clean bone in front of your face. You look up to see an identically clean bone in her other hand. A small pout coming on your face much to her ammusment
"Sorry pup" as she cracks a bone and starts picking out the marrow "you learn to eat fast when you compete with wolves" you swear she jokes about it just to mess with you, though given some of her mannerisms your not sure she's lying
You finish off your bone as she finishes picking out the marrow of hers. You point around you with your bone "this whole place is actually kind of beautiful" you point to the snow covered mountains "I love the way the snow falls"
Her eyes follow your bone "I was raised on that mountain, our den was about halfway up" her voice fades into what you presume is memory as you keep staring at the mountains
"You'll have to take me there one day" receiving no answer. Sighing with the delight only a full belly can bring you lean back a little against your pack as you chuck your bone off away from camp
A blur passes over you as your sent rolling by some sort of force. Her training kicks in as you keep your grip on your pistol as you finish your roll, coming up to see Leman with her face buried in whatever it was that attacked you
You wince, rembering the time she got a little too aggressive with a love bite, feeling almost sorry for whatever dared to attack you in her presence "did you get it love?" Your voice has her turn her head
Only for you to see pure joy in her eyes as she sits there with your bone in her mouth. She practically throws herself forward and drops the bone at your feet. Instinctively you reach out and pat her head, which leans into your hand as your fingers find yheir way behind her ears
Seconds later you both pause realizing what had just happened. Only now you double over laughing as her face flushes
"If you tell anyone of what happend here ill..." her voice fades off, for once she doesn't have an insult or threat of violence ready to issue in a challenge
Recovering from your fit of laughter you move closer and embrace her kneeling form. "Don't worry love. Your secrets safe with me" she sighs and the two of you lose track of time as you stay like that
The only thing that brings out out of it is the sound of the campfire dying out. Leman rises, hating to break the moment "ill get that rebuilt, go get your lighting kit and I'll show you how to build a proper fire" as you both remember the lack luster first attempt you had

Turning to your pack you start to dig through for your lighting kit, coming across it deep inside your pack. Also finding your drinking horn you grab it moving back to the growing pile of wood. Determine to at least best her in one competition tonight

Honestly, after wasting $$$ over the past 7+ years of my life and repeatedly reacting to EVERYthing, I thought I'd create this post hoping someone may benefit from what took me 7+ years to learn:
Face: Don't keep touching your face.
What my skin has literally never reacted negatively to:

• My hero - QV cream [I would say CeraVe, but the ceramides and HA did not agree with my skin AT ALL]
• Vaseline Intense Moisturiser - Fragrance-Free [Not the petroleum jelly, which ended up worsening my eczema]
• Tranexamic Acid for my dull skin - [this is just trial and error, not gonna lie, may or may not work for you]
• Cleansing Balm - Any famous Korean or CeraVe balm should do
• Cleanser - Revolution soothing cleanser (the trick here is to leave it on for 60 seconds) or Oilatum

What it did react negatively to when I was having a flare-up, but I'd still recommend (because the reaction is more of a 'me' problem):

• Missha Revolution Time Essence

Lip: Avoid applicator lip balms, just cleanse your hands when you need to apply the below:

• QV cream (not the lip balm)
• La Roche Posay - Cicaplast Baume B5

Body:

• QV Cream
• Glycolic Acid by The Ordinary (I thought it would fix my KP. It did not, BUT it did help my skin restore its moisture, which I can appreciate. Definitely not a daily situation, but if you suffer from depression like me and skip showers, this routine should fall into place just fine.)

Eyes:

• Stop crying as much; it really messes with my skin, not gonna lie.
• Use no fragrance moisturiser, I guess?
• The dark circle creams messed with my skin BIG time, whether it was Cetaphil, CeraVe, or Eucerin. 0/10 recommend for people with severe eczema.

Makeup:

• Fenty Foundations - Pro Filt'r to be specific, worked fine for me.
• Maybelline Vinyl Lip (least irritating I'd say)

Sunscreen:

• I am wildly allergic to every sunscreen under the sun (heh).
• I've got nothing; maybe try Dr. Shetts? But we don't know the efficacy of this product.

Hair:

• Neutrogena T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo
• Oilatum
• Invest in a humidifier.
• Don't give something 'another shot' if it isn't working well for your skin the first time.

Weather Girls

Appearance: Weather Girls typically only manifests during rainstorms, being otherwise unusable/uncontrollable unless the user is in a highly wet or moist environment. The number of Girls in the swarm varies depending on the severity of the rainstorm, being as little as one in light sprinkles or as many as five hundred in a hurricane. Each Weather Girl takes the form of a strange cross between woman and weather vane, formed of rain and misty vapor. They have translucent, clear bodies with a b lue sheen. Dark grey stormclouds make up their hair, which is in various styles. A weather vane is visible to make up their spine, with each direction point poking through their bodies. Each Weather Girl has a vaguely feminine shape, including breasts, but there is no detail in the lower bodies. Each Weather Girl has yellow eyes that look to be composed of electricity, and dark purple lips. They have golden belts akin to DIO's around their waists, with a stormcloud shooting a lightning bolt in the center between the legs.
Emotional Downpour- Weather Girls reacts with the user's emotions, projecting them into the storm- causing downpours of happiness or storms of anger. If the emotion is strong enough, it can even generate effects to go with the rain, like causing burning rain for anger or healing rain for being happy or calm. Anyone within range of the rainstorm will also feel the emotions projected into it.
Rain Manipulation- Once manifested, each Weather Girl is capable of pulling on the rainclouds to keep them in the Stand's active range, and keep the rainstorm going for far longer than it should. If left unchecked, this can lead to floods.
Moisture Empath- The user can sense changes in the moisture in the air, as well as the emotions of others if it's wet/humid enough.

Update post on my progress and protocols for my treatment with side effects and how I managed it all.
Now that I'm done with treatment, I hope that this can help others who may be starting the same journey and have questions. I attribute my easy time to the premeds and my mental willpower. I focus on the positives and silver linings over the negatives. You can only control one thing -- your reactions. The rest requires you to practice acceptance.
Diagnosis: Stage 2 Endocervical Adenocarcinoma Gastric Type with LVSI
Treatment Plan: Surgery (cervix, uterus, and ovaries) followed by concurrent Chemo with Radiation with a PET Scan scheduled 2 months after treatment to determine if NED or more treatment is required.
I was scheduled for 6 chemo cycles, once a week, and 28 radiation beam therapies. Chemo happened on Monday and Radiation was Monday through Friday. I had to skip Cycle 3 on Chemo only because I was hospitalized with Norovirus and my counts were too low. I still did radiation those days.
Chemo Protocol in order of meds:

1. Magnesium Sulfate + Potassium Chloride. Cisplatin strips this from your body, supplements.
2. Emend (Fosaprepitant) - antiemetic. I had to get a port for this, it burned my arm vein and I had to use other arm for Chemo, no fun.
3. Aloxi (Palonosetron) - antiemetic.
4. Decadron (Dexamethasone) - steroid. It burns in your nether region, if it burns too much, ask them to push it slower.
5. Lasix (Furosemide) - diuretic. Cisplatin is hard on kidneys, this is to help purge the chemo faster. Be close to a bathroom and ask nurse if you can just unplug your IV pole and go to bathroom freely vs. pushing call button -- its easier.
6. Cisplatin (Platinol) 70mg (my dose). Didn't make me feel any different than the other infusions.

Plan for at least 5 hours for the above. I started at 7:30am and ended between 12 and 12:30pm.
Cisplatin Symptoms: This is going to vary person to person and you may get different premeds than me.

• Mon (Day 1) - just the cold feeling in your veins from all the fluid infusions. You also gain like 5lbs of water weight that day. I was typically ravenous and ate whatever I wanted, the antiemetics made this possible. Be wary of constipation from chemo, it took me by surprise the first week. The other weeks I ate a few prunes on Sunday and then after chemo on Monday to help. Otherwise you won't poop for a week and be miserable.
• Tues (Day 2) - no appetite and I don't eat. Even marijuana does not work to stimulate. I'll force myself if DH forces me, but since I eat everything in sight Day 1 I'm not too hard on myself. Important to have first BM this day, if nothing then you need to start addressing. Of course I BM daily so this may not apply to you.
• Wed - Thu (Day 3 - 4) - acid reflux and indigestion. Keep some Tums handy or use pills, it doesn't really help and you get used to it. All in, better than throwing up, so take it as a win if this is the worst for you. Appetite back.
• Fri - Sun (Day 5 -7) - less side effects, should be at normal BMs, if you are not you need to address for next cycle. Very important to purge your bowels if you are constipated before your next chemo. I ended up doing Miralax my first week, I had zero BM before Sat and I could feel the pressure. The following weeks I just did a handful of prunes Sunday night after dinner and Monday when I got home from chemo. I happen to like prunes and they worked to keep me regular.

Pelvic Radiation Symptoms: This is going to be different based on what areas are treated. My bladder, vagina, and pelvic nodes were heavily treated. Be sure you understand the side effects before you start treatment - so you can be on top of everything. Below is my experience and I had a fairly easy time of it.

• The fatigue sets in slowly. By week 3/4 I needed 12 hours a night to sleep. Don't ignore this important rest. I adjusted my work schedule from day 1 -- from 7a to 1p Tue - Thu. I didn't work Mon due to Chemo and Fri I had to get labs done and radiation so I worked from 7a to 11am. I did this from day 1 to set the tone with my boss and ensure I had the time needed to rest even if I didn't need it. I ended up working Sat and sometimes Sun to make up for things. I am a WFH executive - right hand of CEO and in charge of operations. Helps to have a great boss pick up the slack and an amazing team who supported me every step of the way.
• Bowels get softer over time, they do not go from hard to diarrhea overnight. If you have diarrhea fast, don't ignore it or let your doctor's ignore. I thought it was the prunes week 2 that did it, no it was norovirus. They didn't catch it until I had a 102 fever week 3 and had to be hospitalized. The chemo constipation masked it during the week.
• AZO is your BEST FRIEND. Take it every day. It is made to as a pain reliever for the bladder. I missed it for a week and paid for it so bad. Do not skip this important drug. I need to keep taking it for a few weeks until the symptoms subside.
• When you go in for your initial telemetry setup for the machines, make sure you are comfortable before they start anything. The moment you lay down on the machine bed, you need to make sure you are in a good position. They used a mold on my legs and I was not in a good position so it really hurt my hips every session thereafter.
• You have to put your hands on your chest. They give a ring, I hated it. I recommend relaxing your shoulders or you'll have a hard time while they do the treatment.
• You get used to the flow. You walk into the treatment room, hop on a bed while two techs adjust you (I had x marks on both hips and belly that they lined up). Then you get a quick CT to ensure your bladder is full and you're in a good position. Adjustments are made as needed. You know when the radiation beam starts because it is the only thing with noise. Don't move until they say you can. Whole thing is 10 mins or less.
• Bladder management is the worst part. You need to have a full bladder for this and as the treatment progresses you will have a harder time determining if your bladder is full or not. Your kidneys will also work slower (I attribute to the chemo) as the weeks go on, so you'll need to drink earlier. I recommend drinking what will fill your bladder two hours before your treatment. It is easier to let of some pressure than it is to fill the bladder. Tea is a natural diuretic and is very helpful to giving your kidneys a boost. I usually drank 20+ oz of Powerade two hours before (chugging), then tea when I arrived (they had fancy machines) and this worked 90% of the time.
• Be wary of foods you eat. I did great until Week 4 when I had lots of stuff with red sauce and it caused gas. I had to pass this gas before they could do my treatment, it was a riot but you don't want your visits to be like that every day. Stay away from tomato products and anything else that gives you even mild gas outside of treatment. It is nearly impossible to pass gas with an overfull bladder.

Nurses are your best friend. Having cancer and going through treatment sucks, but the nurses are there for you and my experience was all-inclusive resort service. Take advantage of the snacks (yes they have ice cream) when you're getting chemo. Don't be shy about asking them about your meds, they did a good job explaining this to me, but I still had questions now and again. It takes a special person to be an oncology nurse and you feel it. It never felt fake or like they were putting on a show/smile just for me. They truly cared. I never want to see them again either way :)
Edited to add: get a port. You will not regret it. I plan on keeping mine for a year after NED, which will require a monthly flush. It makes things so much easier, especially if you have to be hospitalized. I didn't need the numbing cream, it hurts less than the arm pokes for labs and infusions. I asked for mine before chemo and doctor didn't think it was necessary. First treatment proved it was - I had three IV's that day and I'm still suffering from the Emend infusion (not the chemo surprisingly) on my arm. Yes, its surgery but its easy. I had it in place before my 2nd chemo and it was lifechanging. I'd keep it for life it wasn't for the monthly flushes lol, my arm veins were crap to start and the more they are poked the worse they get.

I'm not looking for answers exactly, but I really hope someone can help me navigate this problem I'm having with my grandfather because I'm at a loss. Thank you in advance 🙏
My grandfather is 92. He's been remarkably healthy and strong his whole life until last October when he fell off a stepladder trying to trim his bushes and broke his hip. After a partial hip replacement, he could no longer go on walks. He couldn't lift his right foot and lost a lot of sensation. Despite this, he actually did recover somewhat and regained some mobility.
Then, last month, he was hospitalized due to fluid buildup/retention around his heart, plus heart inflammation. From this, he was prescribed an antibiotic for an infection, the probable cause of the inflammation, and a water pill to reduce swelling. And Eloquis for A-fib, plus metroprolol.
He took the antibiotic and metroprolol, but I just found out he never took the water pill. I visited him the other day and noticed his legs had gotten really red and swollen. Sores had formed on his ankles and they were weeping fluid. I took him to a doctor, who told him that he needed to take the water pill because of the severe swelling and stop taking the Eloquis due to low blood counts.
I helped him fill his pill box and told him everything he needed to know. But I just found out that he didn't take the water pill for even one day after I left. He's convinced that it's giving him diarrhea, which he is having pretty badly now. I told him that it was probably from the antibiotic and that he should take a probiotic to help his digestion recover. Of course, that didn't work.
I'm concerned that he continues refusing to take the water pill. His attitude has now become, "it's my body, so it's my choice." But if he has a stroke or a heart attack and becomes invalid, he's going to be everyone's problem, and it's not going to be his choice anymore. I'm not saying that to be selfish - I'm saying it because being a burden to other people is the LAST thing he wants in the whole world. That's just the way he is. So that's what I need to prevent from happening.
I just don't know what to do if taking him to a doctor and having her explain everything and him agreeing to it just didn't actually work. One of the problems is that his eldest daughter is an anti-vaxxer and anti-medication type of person whose attitude when he asks her advice is basically, "dad, it's your choice, whatever you want to do." Of course, she's hundreds of miles away, and I'm the grandson down here dealing with the repercussions of her "encouragement."
I'm sorry, that was long. Does anyone have any advice that I haven't thought of? Even advice on alternative treatments for the swelling and diarrhea would be most appreciated.

I’m currently in the process of trying to get a diagnosis and I’ve seen a few doctors who all have different diagnosis (one said dermatology, other said drug rash allergy, one even said MCAS)
I get red/pink throughout my body that comes and goes throughout the day. It is NOT itchy. Currently taking antihistamines but doesn’t really do too much. I have occasionally shortness of breath like trying to catch a deep breath so could be allergic relation. Recently had a very stressful surgery so a lot of things happened at once so getting a diagnosis is hard.
Anyone’s condition mostly on face and upper torso and NOT itchy? Or does it suddenly come onset via stress???

Whenever I was 13, I started getting swollen lips and itchy mouth from shellfish, also esophageal spasms which cause a wave of painful contractions in my esophagus. No systemic reactions but I stopped eating shellfish since that time. I have tried different places such as crab at the beach, lobster at home. Same reaction. Bananas, and avocados cause me an itchy mouth and swollen esophagus/esophageal spasms (painful throbbing in chest that comes in waves). I ate a banana last night and woke up an hour later with severe stomach pain. Figured it was due to the eggs I ate earlier that day and got salmonella. Went away after 2 hours. Ate a banana this morning, an hour later same stomach pain like someone punched me in the stomach. I always wondered why I never really ate bananas even as a child, I guess they never agreed with me. I added them back in the last few days because I’m trying to eat healthier.
I have been reading up on DAO deficiency and histamine intolerance, I’m wondering if this could be it, and wondering if it could also be causing my shellfish symptoms. Most fruits do this, blueberries are another one that causes issues. Eggs cause fullness but it’s not that bad so I still eat eggs. Milk does sometimes, but chocolate milk does not. Salami and pepperonis cause a similar reaction
Thing is, beer and other alcoholic drinks are also high in histamine but don’t give me any trouble aside from the regular beer bloat. Whiskey can cause a stuffy feeling but that’s it.

I was reading a bug subreddit earlier this week, and someone mentioned getting bitten by a tick, and said something about a bullseye rash. I realized a mysterious rash I got about 3 years ago looks exactly like a bullseye rash associated with Lyme disease.
I don’t think I have been symptomatic? I have some random joint/muscle pain here and there, but mostly attribute it to exercise, since I am pretty active.
I can’t attach pictures of the rash (located back of leg), but it started as a red circle about 5cm in diameter and turned into a bullseye-like shape with a red bump in the middle, and was about 8 cm total diameter. I never saw the tick (if that’s what bit me)…

Should I/can I still be tested for Lyme? Is it possible my body fought off infection on its own? I’ve seen so much conflicting info online.

Hello there!
My assistance dog (Im in the UK) is charity trained. As part of my training with my first assistance dog (12 1/2 years ago) they introduced Canine Calming Signals, and the person who first recognised them, Turid Rugaas.
Turid is a behaviourist and an affirmative, force-free trainer in Norway. She first talked about things most people easily recognise now- like a play bow- and was there at the start of increasing awareness about dogs' awareness of humans, and ability to read humans. You might be asking yourself, tho... what does this matter for a service dog?
Your dog has nothing better to do than watch you, constantly, and try to figure you out... so if you understand what things are especially meaningful to your dog, you can make it easier for them to understand what you want, need, like, or don't like.
For example- a yawn and a look away after licking the lips. This is clear "dog speak" for "Calm down, there is nothing to worry about, and you being all excited is gonna stress me out".
Watch your dog and see how often THEY use the sign!
Dogs (mostly) naturally do everything they can to "keep the peace" with other dogs (and people). The way they approach each other, the way they hold their bodies... it tells you what they are thinking. Each dog varies a bit, so learning *your* dog is important.
When my dog is being silly and over-excited, or conversely, is stressed in a place that might be unfamiliar (for example), I can look at him, lick my lips, yawn, and turn my head away- and he thinks "Oh, she's not worried, and she doesn't want me to be..." and he will calm down. In one of her books, there is a great story where someone moves with their dog to a house that has a commuter rail track at the foot of the garden. Every time the train goes by, the dog gets incredibly stressed and shakes, cries, and tried to hide. They looked at the time tables, and just before the train was to come, the people rewarded the dog, and as the train started to approach they engaged in a positive interaction like playing or cheerful grooming. When the dog starts to show signs of distress, they lick-yawn-turn. Over time, the dog learned "trains don't scare mum and dad, so, they don't train me either" and the dog no longer cared about the train.
You can go anywhere to learn more, and there are some good books- but it's worth it. In time, you learn to read your dog as well as communicate with them- both strengthen and improve both your training and your relationship.

He was back at Smiley’s taproom with a petite brunette dangling from his arm, the young signal operator whose acquaintance he’d made while assigned as a liaison officer with the Exploratory Corps. There he was, all big and stiff in his brand-new dress uniform, trying desperately to impress someone who was astronomically more attractive than him and making a priceless ass of himself.
“So,” she purred, eyeing him over the rim of her glass, “Tell me again about the surface. What’s it like wandering up there above all us wee mortals?”
“Erm,” Rene cleared his throat, feeling a hot flush creeping up his reddening neck, “It’s, uh, quite remarkable really. Simply fantastic.”
Having run out of things to say, Rene took a snootful of his drink in an attempt to sharpen his wits. It was so hard to focus with her hanging onto his every word like this.
“Ooh, you make it sound so exciting,” Deborah had tittered. Or was it Devorah? Her name had gotten lost in the fumes of fermented honeydew clouding up his brain. Perhaps another sip would jog his memory. Rene downed the horrid swill and coughed as it burned its way down his throat and up his nostrils.
“Would you look at the state of him!” someone guffawed, slapping Rene on the back, “Cool as cucumbers under fire when there’s a hundred dirty Amits breathing down our necks, but prop him up next to a lass and he goes completely to pieces.”
“Ah, piss off,” Rene said fondly. He turned to see Lethway sitting next to him flanked by two buxom blondes, an Amit axe buried deep in his neck.
“I’m only saying. You’ve got to keep your head on your shoulders, man,” Lethway said, as his own tumbled off sideways and hung on by a flap of gristle, “We’ve got a long night ahead of us with our fine lady friends here. It wouldn’t do for you to be sleeping on the job.’
“Why, Lethie my dearest. I’m sure Mr. Louvoture has the…stamina…to keep up,” the brunette said demurely, batting her eyelids at Rene, “Go on. You were telling me about how amazing it is up there.”
“Yes,” Rene puffed out his cheeks and marshalled his scattered thoughts, “It’s like this, see…how can I put it? Words can hardy do it justice.”
“Try me,” Deborah/Devorah said, tugging at his arm with her warm hands. The girl was practically throwing herself at him no matter how badly he was fumbling the ball. Rene my lad, if you don’t make it tonight you’re going to regret it for the rest of your life, Rene thought to himself.
“Alrighty then,” Rene said, deciding to risk everything by gaze deep into her eyes, which if the romance novels were to be believed, were windows into a woman’s soul. She had very pretty irises, all velvety and shining with something bordering on hero-worship.
“When you’re topside and the suns go down beyond the hills, and the clouds weep tears of crimson as the sky rolls over into a bowl of stars holding all the universe above you, it feels like…like…” Rene trailed off.
“What?” she whispered into the hush that had settled over the bar.
“Well, it feels a little like this,” Rene said softly, leaning in for a kiss. Her lips tasted his, the tip of her tongue quivering with longing. She drew him into her embrace, gripping him around the waist and pressing into him.
Awfully forward, these girls from Mound Sierra, Rene thought with some alarm. Not that he was complaining. They spent an eternity entwined like this, the whole taproom cheering and egging them on.
“Woof!” Rene broke away to catch his breath, “Is it me, or is it getting hard to breathe in here?”
“Shut up and kiss me again,” Devorah/Deborah said impatiently, wrapping a leg around his and holding him tight. Rene put a hand on her thigh and found that she was surprisingly hairy for a girl. Feeling a little repulsed at this he tried to peel himself away, but found that he couldn’t move any of his limbs.
“Mmph. Hmmgh!” he mumbled, his voice muffled by her insistent mouth. He cocked an eyebrow over her shoulder at Lethway, who’d just propped his head back up onto its stump.
“Cheers, big fellow!” Lethway tipped a glass in his direction and downed his glass in one gulp, the drink trickling out of him through a large bullet hole in his chest.
“I hate it when that happens,” Lethway said, staring sadly at it. He looked back up at Rene and said: “Oy! What did I tell you about falling asleep on the job. Isn’t it about time you got moving, trooper?”
“Not yet,” Devorah/Deborah sighed, kissing his neck, “First he has to tell me how much he likes my eyes. You do like my eyes, don’t you?”
“Why, of course darling—” Rene began. But then she pulled back to look him in face, and the words curdled and died on his lips.
Gone was the petite brunette in her oh-so-short skirt, replaced by a furry, many-eyed freak with quivering mouthparts. In an instant Smiley’s taproom was torn away to reveal the awful truth of his current circumstances: he was hanging upside down from a tree and caught in monster’s deadly embrace. He was trussed up by his legs which had gone completely numb, and his wrists were bound together by loops of silk that felt as strong as steel chains. Yelling incoherently, Rene started wriggling like a worm on a hook. The creature tightened its hold and pressed its fangs against his throat, delicately avoiding piercing the skin while looking at him through its row of eyes.
It was a warning. Rene wisely heeded it and stopped struggling. After a long moment the monster let him go, although they both continued to dangle upside down. Rene stared at its face in horrid fascination. He saw now that it had four eyes on its flat, squarish face, the centermost pair dwarfing the two ancillary ones on either side of them. In the place of a lower jaw it had four vertical mouthparts, the shorter ones in the middle tipped with curved fangs while the rest functioned like antennae, moving constantly with little taps and clicks, its grotesque head nodding along with them.
Rene thought the motion was reminiscent of a person’s lips as they mumbled, and he had a disturbing suspicion that the monster was trying to talk to him. The fact that he was still alive also lent credence to this theory. After all, if Amits were intelligent lifeforms, why couldn’t this one be as well? Hoping against hope, he stammered out:
“I—I don’t understand. I’m afraid I can’t speak your language. Haven’t got the equipment for it. See?”
Rene bared his teeth at it in a forced smile, tying show it what he meant. But the monster recoiled from him, pushing off the trunk behind him and leaping back some twenty meters away from him. It alighted on a tangle of creeper vines and hung there in all its awful majesty, eyeing Rene through its four unblinking orbs. It had ten appendages including its stubby antennae, each of them ending in a three-clawed hand. Its shoulder and thigh muscles were enormous, though its potbellied torso was as round as a wagon wheel, sporting a disgusting hump of flesh on its back. No doubt it contained even more musculature to support its powerful limbs, which at the moment were bunched up and ready to spring.
He had startled it, Rene realized. His own mouth was probably just as alien and repulsive to its sensibilities as its physiology was to him. Before he could derive some small satisfaction from that, more of the monsters emerged to join the first, darting out of the shadows with an unnatural, jittery motion. They moved in stops and starts, periods of immobility interrupted by burst of blinding speed, here one moment and gone the next.
“It shpeaksh…” Rene heard someone say in a voice somewhere between a dry croak and the gurgling of a water pipe. Rene looked around for the source of the voice and was shocked to find that it was issuing from the largest monster, the one reclining on the vines like some misshapen ape. He couldn’t believe his own ears. It was speaking Fleet cantish, mangling its way through the words somehow despite the total absence of a jawbone.
“Gallivant?” another queried with clearer pronunciation.
“No blade-wing, thish,” the leader clicked its palps thoughtfully, “Too shoft. Too schtupid. Came from the fire giant. Dropped a sheed pod, it did, like a tree in the wind. The sheed shpun a web and floated. Down, down, down.”
“Shoft like a grub,” agreed the smallest monster somewhat belatedly. A frothy substance with the consistency of saliva dripped from its fangs. It took a step towards Rene, stiffening all over. Before he could even blink it had launched itself through the air directly at him. In the same instant the leader also leapt, slamming bodily into its subordinate and throwing it to the ground.
“No,” the leader rasped, letting the other monster limp away having been suitably chastised, “Questions firshht. The fire giant. Are you itsh hatchling?”
It was staring at Rene when it said this. Rene thought quickly. It was a binary question and he felt that his life hung in the balance, the odds being even either way. Heads or tails? From what he’d heard it was clear that the only thing keeping him from lining the stomachs of these monsters was their abiding curiosity. They had witnessed the Divine Engine and his impromptu ejection from it, and they were under the impression that it had been a living thing and that he was its offspring. It followed that the best thing to do was to maintain their interest in him for as long as possible while he thought of an escape plan. Heads it was, then. Rene said:
“Yes. Yes, I am its ‘hatchling’.”
He glanced around until he found his sword where he had left it leaning against the buttress root, still in its sheathe next to the survival kit. If he could just reach down and grasp it in his hands…
“Good,” said the abomination, “And know you the secret of itsh power?”
“Of course,” Rene said, slowly and surreptitiously stretching out his arms, reaching for the sword hilt with all his might.
“Good, good,” the abomination crooned. There was a blur of motion and the leader materialized in front of him, their faces inches apart. It seized him by the hairs and yanked him close.
“Then I, too, will know its inner workingshh. Once I open your head and drink deep from your mind.”
Should have gone with tails, Rene thought as it lunged for him.

I have been dealing with chronic, migrating joint pain for the past 6 years. Within the past 12 months, it has ramped up and moved down into my lower back and SI joints. I took 10 weeks of medical leave last November from my corporate job to try and sort it out because I was in alot of pain which was causing massive anxiety. Unfortunately, during my leave, doctors ran basic tests and said I was fine and put me on anxiety meds.
I've been back at work since February and things continued to deteriorate with my back. I have been sucking it up and pushing through the pain because I fear losing my job. Unfortunately, this weekend, I woke up in a level 9/10 pain, passed out from it, and could not support my upper body weight. Despite this, I still waddled my way into work yesterday and had to take breaks where I had to lie down flat in the bathroom and stretch my SI joints. Its pathetic and embarrassing.
I saw my doctor yesterday, and she is finally taking it seriously and is concerned that something is wrong with my SI joints causing them to be extremely inflamed. My lower back is swollen as well. She gave me a steroid shot (did nothing at all) and has now ordered imaging and autoimmune testing. She has also referred me to an orthopedic surgeon and rheumatologist.
I am happy things are being taken seriously, but at this point - my boss has lost all sympathy and understanding for my health problems and he freaks out anytime I need to leave work early for appointments or if I need to work from home because of pain.
I get his frustration, I will admit that at least once a week, I need to either leave early for apts or wfh due to pain. However, I have never missed a deadline and continue to provide amazing work. I also push through more than I dont and he doesnt see that. I've never once been reprimanded for work-related issues - only the needing to wfh or the appointments, citing that "Others start to get jealous that I'm able to leave early and wfh but they can't". He retaliates by giving me attitude, interrupting me in meetings, and not giving me work or work that is way below my skill level.
I have been trying to find a new job, but the insurance here is good and I need it to resolve these issues hopefully. I am also a single mom, so just up and quitting isn't an option. I'm not sure how to protect my job or if it's even possible to do so. I'm not trying to freak out, but it's becoming harder and harder to take care of myself and I don't have anyone to lean on or help me. I cannot afford for these issues to get to a point where I am unable to be independent.
I am curious if anyone else here has experienced discrimination at work due to chronic pain, or has lost a job because of it. What happened and how did you handle it?
I do have FMLA, but that only covers me for 12 weeks and I've already wasted 10 on medical leave, leaving me with two weeks of FMLA left until November 2024. I'm not sure what my options are moving forward...Do I talk to HR? (I know they are there to protect themselves not me) Is there anything else I can do to protect myself and my job?
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place here. I've reached the limit where I can no longer push through the pain. I also have to get this imaging and further testing done ASAP, but the places that do the imagine are only open during the same times I work and I live 45 min away from where my job is located - going there on lunch breaks isn't an option.
When dealing with chronic pain, how do you put yourself and your health first when you have a kid to support and are doing it all alone?
Looking for any advice, personal anecdotes, words of encouragement, success stories - anything. I keep feeling so guilty like I am letting people down by being in pain, but it’s obvious now that the pain is real and it's gotten to a really bad point.
