2024.05.13 18:32 HarryBossk Thoughts on Rose Red?

I finally got around to watching Rose Red, the 2002 miniseries King wrote for ABC. (It's on Hulu in the US.) Boy, talk about a whiff. I can't fault the dodgy CGI because this 2002 we're talking about. But it has the unfortunate inclusion of the Magical Autistic Child (a trope we don't see much of anymore, and at least this girl doesn't crap all over herself like the kid in The Regulators), a hall-of-fame bad character in Emery Waterman (played by the otherwise-capable Matt Ross in a bafflingly bad performance), and overall just an unworthy successor to Hell House and The Haunting of Hill House, both of which this cribs from liberally. It's kind of fun to see a young Jimmi Simpson and Melanie Lynskey before they became bona fide TV stars, but that was probably the best part of the whole thing. Anybody else agree or disagree?

2024.05.09 23:02 SoDamnFresh1 I need help finding Graffiti in tv shows and movies...

Im NOT talking about 'graffiti movies' eg. Infamy, Style Wars etc... Im talking about 'normal' tv shows and movies that may have one of the characters do graffiti or they talk about graffiti?
For example Bart Simpson does graffiti... The new animated spiderman movies his uncle takes him out painting. Theres a soap opera in UK called Eastenders where one of the characters did some graffiti... Things like this... Can anyone else remember any tv shows or movies or characters that have graff in them?
THANKS šŸ™ŒšŸ½

2024.05.09 09:34 Otherwise_Shoe4951 List of References in Harold Halibut

!SPOILERS Here is an incomplete list of references/easter eggs to other media I found in Harold Halibut. I havenā€™t seen a compilation elsewhere but I was impressed at the number of references the game made. Please comment with others you find!
Big Lebowski - Marty the landlordā€™s dance quintet scene. Takes place on the Arcade stage over multiple chapters. https://youtu.be/dLU_dAlyRz8?si=RWHnqKO2_IFzQBnB
The Simpsons - ā€œI for one welcome our new alien friendsā€ spoken by a side character (i forgot to note who) near the end of the Chapter 5
Tool (band) - Lateralus (song) - quote ā€œoverthinking, overanalyzing, separates the body from the mindā€. This is almost verbatim written in one of the letters you deliver for Buddy.
Day of the tentacle - tentacle that is wriggling in front of one of the windows in the lab. A beautiful nod to an early adventure game.
Spider-Man - Graffiti written on wall in the Lab- ā€œWith great power comes great responsibility.ā€œ
Dragon Ball Z - flumylym kids do the fusion dance when you arrive in the cave
Last of Us - Near the end of the game, giraffes are grazing in the background. Both scenes take place at the end of their respective games and they both involve the animals surviving by grazing in a dilapidated environment after their human keepers stopped caring for them decades ago.

2024.05.05 21:04 PersonaNonGrata2288 Does buying limes at a liquor store constitute being IDā€™d?

I may not be phrasing the title correctly but, a lot of people put limes in their corona beer. Does merely buying limes provide some evidence that a person is also drinking alcohol? I wanted to get some limes cause I was making guac today, I didnā€™t want to go all the way to the grocery store, and I remembered the liquor store down the road sells limes. So I stop in and grab limes. Put the limes on the counter, the worker rings em up, and I go to pay. Before I pay the worker says to me ā€œhow old are you?ā€ I go ā€œwhat?ā€ Like I was flabbergasted, the worker goes ā€œcan I see your id?ā€ I go ā€œfor limes?ā€ I gave them my Id, they saw I was over 21. I pay and then leave. It was a liquor store, they do sell like chips and snacks and candyā€™s and other non age prohibited things. You can obviously buy limes at a grocery store with no ID. Is the fact that it was in a liquor store change that?
Edit to add: I truly appreciate everyoneā€™s responses, Iā€™ve even had liquor store owners/workers respond, which is great to get that angle/perspective on it. To clear a few things up, I do NOT live in a state with state controlled liquor stores (like ABC stores some states have). This was not a gas station, supermarket, super Walmart, convince store, this is a legit LIQUOR STORE. That being said, they do sell the following: chips, candy, gum, soda, kraft singles, limes. All sorts of non age restricted stuff. Also this is my ā€œnormalā€ liquor store, as in Iā€™m in here buying beers 2-3 times a week. Iā€™m friendly with the owner and some of the other staff, and the clerk in question saw me buying beer yesterday. I am of age (thatā€™s apparently the only reason I was able to buy the limes in question, and I did just show the clerk my ID and paid for the limes and left).
The only question I truly had is that, if people buy spray paint, or like Sudafed, those things can be used for graffiti or making meth respectively. I didnā€™t know if limes at a liquor store were something similar. Because I know limes are kinda of synonymous with drinking corona beer. Iā€™m aware being a patron of a liquor store is a privilege not a right, and they are allowed to deny me service for any reason. Iā€™m not trying to get the clerk in trouble or anything, I didnā€™t go full Karen, I was just curious.

2024.05.04 18:35 Lazy_Arrival4516 Three special things for u/stewblock2023

Three special things for u/stewblock2023
Hello, everyone! My name is u/Lazy_Arrival4516, and I have three special things for my friend u/stewblock2023! Yes, three of them. So letā€™s start off with the first one, which is an upcoming refreshed version of ToƱo Pradaā€™s cartoon mural. You know? The mural created by Spanish graffiti artist ToƱo Prada for INCIBE while itā€™s inspired by three hybrid crossover Disney movies called Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers and Once Upon A Studio, as well as many other crossovers like Super Smash Bros., Peter Kay's Animated All-Star Band from Children in Need, The Children's Party at the Palace, every single bumper from Cartoon Network's 20th Birthday, the Simpsons and Family Guy crossover, and many other crossovers due to various iconic cartoon characters on it? Yep! But this time, it will be a blank longer version of the mural, with its gates having the same shape. It will have the same characters from the mural, but also, ā€œmore charactersā€. Plus, the characters will be completely white drawings with black bolder and no details when theyā€™re in the base. Also, the drawings will have each number on them, representing more than 268 cartoon characters. But donā€™t worry! Iā€™ll make sure that u/stewblock2023 will handle this, by painting the mural to what the fan-made version looks like! Hereā€™s the numbered list of all the characters in order:

NOTE: I'm hard to add the drawings and numbers.
The next one is about ToƱo Pradaā€™s cartoon mural again, but this time, with characters from animations by Joe (and Danielle Kogan)! The mural will have the same thing as the previous one, with a slight difference that the mural is now shaped like the original version of ToƱo Pradaā€™s cartoon mural. Also, the drawings will have each number on them, representing more than 37 Ukinojoe characters. Also, the gates will not be painted because theyā€™re going to be dark-brown like in ToƱo Pradaā€™s cartoon mural. But letā€™s not forget the list:
  1. The Sphinx from The Last Dinosaur.
  2. Replacement Bully.
  3. Audrey & Victor.

  36. Frank from Meme High School.
  37. Hank Hill (Bobbyā€™s New Hobby version only).
He can also add the reddish-pink ā€œTHIS IS GREATā€ text in the bottom of the front, a large computer screen that displays the Great: The Show logo behind Bella Caramella, the Fan Con from Great: The Show in the background behind the computer screen, and even the stuff from the MAD intro in the same background! Hereā€™s a list of said stuff:
  • The colorful floor.
  • The sky of spotty clouds, flying logos and different colors (blue, cyan, orange-yellow, and purple).
  • Various claymation buildings (crane, palm, wooden bridge, etc.).
  • Various claymation vehicles (blue car, red car, helicopter, bird-winged airplane, school bus, etc.).
  • Various claymation versions of various additional characters (unnamed angry man, Spider-Man, Shrek, SpongeBob, Tow Mater, Optimus Prime, Steak Guy, monkey ballerina, Yellow Guy, Bloo, Woody, Batman, Buzz Lightyear, Charizard, and Cinnamon Bun).
  • The alien from Mike Wartellaā€™s Spacenook.
Plus, Blonicā€™s face is edited to have a smile because he gives me a thumb up. Now, hereā€™s the image for it. It can be similar to the previous one but letā€™s check it out.
NOTE: Again, I'm hard to add the drawings and numbers.
And last but not least is a new upcoming video, which contains the fan-made versions of both scenes from Chip nā€™ Dale: Rescue Rangers where Sweet Pete transforms into his bootleg form, Frankenpete, by the malfunctioning machine! And yes, this video is inspired by a Reddit comment about the fan-made versions of both forms of the character, but we donā€™t include the voices (except for Marieā€™s meow and a version of Wreck-It Ralphā€™s catchphrase) for this video because it doesnā€™t have the scenes where Frankenpete started chasing Chip and Dale. Why? Because like I said, this is an edited version of said scene. Hereā€™s the screenshots of the comment that will inspire the video:
https://preview.redd.it/ntw8a3x2sfyc1.png?width=1141&format=png&auto=webp&s=6e630eb4661c855af2c460f73ea999f0d54653a0
Anyway, letā€™s check out the videoā€™s plot. First, it has two different languages: in the beginning, the language is Latin-American Spanish before it changes to a high-pitched version of the English language from the original film (can be seen on the Villains Wiki page of Sweet Pete) during the scene where Frankenpete was created. Also, it basically uses the ā€œSweet Pete transforms into Frankenpeteā€ scene from the Latin-American dub of Chip nā€™ Dale: Rescue Rangers, with a few differences:
  • The transformation sound effects from Donā€™t Hug Me Iā€™m Scared 6 are added during Sweet Peteā€™s transformation.
  • The Hanna-Barbera sound effects are added during Sweet Peteā€™s transformation.
  • The Ed, Edd nā€™ Eddy sound effects are added during Sweet Peteā€™s transformation.
  • The sound effects from the Johnny Bravo intro are added during Sweet Peteā€™s transformation.
  • Various clips from What the Fuck? by 64marjo64 are added during Sweet Peteā€™s transformation in the fog.
  • Various videoclips from Intolerance III (e.g. the scenes from the Just a Gigolo/I Ainā€™t Got Nobody music video by Andreas Hykade and Louis Prima featuring the eye-popping Louis Prima cat and the shocked female mouse) are added during Sweet Peteā€™s transformation in the fog.
  • Frankenfruitā€™s defeat is added when Sweet Pete falls into the ground during his transformation in the fog.
  • The sword and blood from Willaā€™s Normal Life are added during Sweet Peteā€™s transformation in the fog.
  • Homer Simpsonā€™s shape-shifting body from the Don Hertzfeldt Couch Gag is added when Sweet Pete falls into the ground during his transformation in the fog.
  • The mutated blue morphing montage from Andreas Hykadeā€™s Love & Theft is added after Homer Simpsonā€™s shape-shifting body becomes a yellow liquid during Sweet Peteā€™s transformation.
  • The added parts from the Reddit comment are added during Sweet Peteā€™s transformation and the Frankenpete scene.
Well, thatā€™s all for today! And u/stewblock2023! If youā€™re reading this, do the stuff Iā€™ve just mentioned! Anyways, see ya later!

2024.04.30 11:43 showstealer1829 Clashes in Melbourne, House Defaced as Trans Veterans are thanked [Event Post Finale]

Good Evening everyone. This is ABC News. I'm Jefferson Dufflecoat.
Melbourne was once again the home for heated clashes between supporters and detractors of trans people as Federation Square hosted a thank you ceremony for the trans veterans that were banned from ANZAC Day marches in Mildura, Bendigo and Traralgon.
Federation Square was hosted to approximately 1500 people as the 25 or so trans veterans who chose to appear were given warm welcomes and thanks from an appreciative crowd. Things would turn heated however when a group of the supporters decided to march down St. Kilda Road towards the Shrine of Remembrance, where approximately 200 supporters of the RSL's decision to ban trans veterans were holding a counter protest to the gathering at Federation Square.
Supporters of the veterans were held back by police but threw bottles and rubbish at the RSL's supporters, two police officers suffered minor injuries and 7 people were arrested, mostly for failing to follow police instructions.
ABC News can also confirm that one Trans veteran also had their house defaced. Jennifer O'Shea, from Robinvale came home from the rally on Sunday to find her home covered in Nazi graffiti and anti trans slogans. A group called the "Social Decency Protectors" or "The Real SDP" claimed responsibility online for the incident saying that "Transgenderism was a mental illness and must be treated and shown as such". It is believed that this group is a splinter group of the Sovereign Protectors of Democracy, the group involved in violent clashes with the youth council at Parliament House late last year, although that group has disavowed any knowledge of this particular incident.
The incident comes on the heels of the Government announcing plans to allow trans people over the age of 16 to have their gender identity changed on ID and other documents to allow them to be reflected to the gender they identify with, a full statement is expected sometime this week but was not forthcoming at the time we go to air.
The incident shows that Australia still like many countries around the world remains divided on the issue of transgenderism and that a fine line must be trodden between the ideals to avoid violence.
This is ABC News.

2024.04.26 17:02 stemh18 What was the first instance in a movie of a character shooting at somebody else's feet and shouting 'dance'?

Was discussing this with a friend the other night and realized that while it's a common reference that seems to be parodied from gangster movies, neither of us could determine where it originates. I've seen it in The Simpsons when a young Mr Burns shoots at a guy's feet with his BB gun, in Back to the Future III when Marty starts moonwalking in the saloon, but I can't figure out what the earliest usage is. It's akin to that graffiti S that Lemmino on YouTube went down the rabbit hole to find. Anybody know the earliest use?

2024.03.13 21:44 JohannGoethe On the engineered āš™ļø language šŸ”¢ šŸ”  šŸ—£ļø hypothesis (ELH) and the letters: A, B, G, D, E, F being various masonry tools, e.g. A = plumb bob Dimitris Psychoyos (A50/2005)

On the engineered āš™ļø language šŸ”¢ šŸ”  šŸ—£ļø hypothesis (ELH) and the letters: A, B, G, D, E, F being various masonry tools, e.g. A = plumb bob Dimitris Psychoyos (A50/2005)
In A50 (2005), Dimitris Psychoyos, in his the last two pages of his 67-page article ā€œThe Forgotten Art of Isopsephyā€œ (pg. 208-09), concludes with the suggestion that the invention of alphabetic writing may have been an invention of metallurgical engineers or some new technology:
ā€œThe fact that alphabetic writing spread at the same time as the iron metallurgy may not be a simple coincidence. Pithekoussai, just like Lefkandi in Euboea, with some very short graffiti, where the oldest Greek inscriptions have been discovered, are centers for the working of iron ore. The early Greeks have been out there in the West searching for iron-ore, the raw material of new technology (Ridgway, A37/1992).
Then he cites Espancia abecedary:
The abecedary of Espanca is in the heart of the region where Tartessians produced silver, lead, tint ā€” maybe under the supervision of Phoenicians or Greeks.ā€
Visual:
https://preview.redd.it/fk0v5w6vw5oc1.jpg?width=1918&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6fc893202bc7214de6d40a559cb39e52a02e05b3

The 27th character: ā–·ā—, shown far left, in each row, going right (A) to left (Ļ”), which looks like an hourglass ā³, could be the two-headed šŸŽ sampi (Ī£Ī‘ĪœĪ Ī™) [331], value: 900, letter, aka Osiris-Apis, in Egyptian, turned Janus Ī™Ī‘ĪĪŸĪ£ [331], in Latin, the two faced god, shown below:
https://preview.redd.it/zfw7on4d26oc1.jpg?width=1224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1747d7d210d9125eff0d95c2f6aa9418091b2d1
Psychoyos argues, cogently, throughout his article, was that the reason people were writing 27 ordered characters on rocks, was not the result of school children ā€œpracticing their ABCsā€, as we do now, rather, instead, the 27 symbols represented the numbers 1 to 900, and were used like a pocket calculator, to do math. Anne Jeffery (4A/1951), however, lists this double triangle symbol as a type of punctuation mark?
Psychoyos, then, citing the Gardiner model (39A/1916), says the following:
ā€œThe oldest examples of alphabetic (Proto-Sinaitic) writing were found in turquoise mines in Sinai ā›°ļø.ā€
To correct things, there is NO alphabetic writing in Sinai. The ABGD (š¤ƒš¤‚š¤š¤€) (Ī‘Ī’Ī“Ī”) letter sequence is NOT found anywhere in Sinai.
In reality, Flinders Petrie found barely discernible ā€œsymbolsā€ on cave walls in Egyptian turquoise mines and on two small sphinx figurines, and Alan Gardiner decided to say these symbols were the origin of the ā€œSemitic alphabetā€, i.e. the alphabet of Shem, Noahā€™s oldest son, thus fitting the Bible narrative. This is the hallmark of non-objective, i.e. biased, or agenda-based scientific linguistics, akin to finding a piece of wood in Sinai and claiming that Noahā€™s ark has been found.
Psychoyos then uses his brain:
ā€œIt is strange how everybody wonders šŸ’ if it was possibleā“for humble workers, Semite prisoners of war in fact [Gardiner, 39A], to have invented šŸ’”alphabetic šŸ”  writing āœļø?ā€
A visual of this non-sensical Semitic prisoner of war, in slave labor, in Sinai, inventing the alphabet model, from a video by Philip Boyes (A66/2021), is shown below:
https://preview.redd.it/belr6t4906oc1.jpg?width=2120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c0bf36afcf50bc118a0ff622ff677709f5f12c7e
Psychoyos then strikes gold, with the following comment:
ā€œBut no one should discuss the possibility of the invention šŸ’”alphabetic šŸ”  writing āœļø to have been the work of āš™ļø engineers, even though the myths seem to point in this direction?ā€
He then says:
ā€œMaybe alpha, beta, gamma, delta ... represent 1, 2, 3, 4 ... in some šŸ—£ļø language?
The following table are the first four Greek letters as Egyptian numbers:
šŸŒ— Glyph Thing Tomb U-j Value I 350 Phoen Greek Roman
5100A 3200A 3000A 2800A 2400A
# -3145 -1245 -1045 -845 -445
1 š“Œ¹ Shu š“ŗ, š“¤ 1 N/A š¤€ A A
2 š“‡Æ Nut š“», š“® 2 N/A š¤ā€Ž B B
3 š“‡¼š“Š¹ š“…¬; š“‚ø š“¤ Geb (phallus) š“¼, š“¦ 3 N/A š¤‚ G C
4 ā–½; šŸœ‚ Osiris š“½ 4 N/A š¤ƒ Ī” D
Psychoyos then conjectures that the number values of the Greek letters derived from the secret language of Egyptian engineers:
In some Egyptian dialect perhaps ā€” or in the secret language of Egypt's craftsmen, her engineers who measured and constructed, who embodied ideas, calculations and their reason into matter?
This hypothesis of the Greek language being the byproduct of the secret language of Egyptian engineers, aka ā€œengineered language hypothesisā€œ (ELH), is excellent!
This engineered language conjecture has been corroborated by Peter Swift (A17/1971) and Moustafa Gadalla (A61/2016) who determined that the 28 lunar chapter numbered valued from 1, 2, 3, 4 ā€¦ to 800, 900, of the Leiden I350 papyrus (3200A/-1245) match the number values of the Greek alphabet. We have found, e.g. that Thoth is listed at stanza 300 or letter 21, i.e. letter T lunar stanza, as maker of letters, which are called Ļ„Ļ…Ļ€ĪæĻ…Ļ‚ [typous] in Greek, each letter having a certain Ļ„ĻĻ€ĪæĻ‚ (tĆ½pos) or shape.
Next he says:
It would be worth while studying the relationship between the technology of metallurgy and the technology of writing: since calculations are integral components of technology and since isopsephy, i.e. the hermaphrodite stoikheia, letters and digits at the same time, was a semiotic reality for at least 2,000-years, from Sargon (2660A/-705) and his wall:
https://preview.redd.it/k26n5hl2b6oc1.jpg?width=1401&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac96e60eae677ea784a1764add670753e6a3c420
to Fibonacci (730A/1225), we must seek the ancient centers of development of writing in places corresponding to those where technology and calculations are developing today: the NASA, nuclear reactors, universities, the IBM and Microsoft of that age ā€” not to mention the naval yards and arsenals. Technology, writing, calculations mean power for cities, tyrants, kings, and emperors.
Indeed! This calls to mind the fact that the recent ā€œcomputer languageā€œ, based on 1s and 0s, which powers our phones, smart devices, and computers, was invented by engineers. The first ā€œcomputer programming languageā€, in fact, is generally cited as that done by Ada Lovelace (106A/1849) on how to calculate Bernoulli numbers using the analytical engine of Charles Babbage.
It would thus seem reasonable to conjecture that the alphabetic-based languages, of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Syrians, and Etruscans, etc., were likewise the invention of engineers, Egyptian engineers specifically, as Psychoyos argues!
Letter A
On letter A, with respect to its type or character shape origin, Psychoyos tells us that it could NOT have originated from a picture of the stupid ox:
Letter A cannot possibly originate from the picture of the slow moving, sluggish ox šŸ‚, which represents unreasoned force, if not stupidity.
This is excellent! This type of statement, wherein someone is willing to call bunk on status quo alphabet origin models, is VERY rare. The only explicit quote, like this, which comes to mind, is the following:
ā€œWe now ask those who believe in the sign of a bull, as the origin of letter A, to explain to us why this sign was not drawn in a life-like position, i.e. erect ā±Æ, and why in a position which could only be possible in a dead bull?ā€
ā€” Joseph Enthoffer (80A/1875), Origin of Our Alphabet (dead bull, pg. 16)
Psychoyos continues:
ā€™Aā€™ has the shape of the ā€™alphadionā€™, of the level, that amazing, A-shaped tool which uses a plumb line to define the horizontal plane.
Visual of what he is arguing:
https://preview.redd.it/vvkved5pi6oc1.jpg?width=1151&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa7fb9dd0c3e81ab678fa7365ee6178bb6f1b8a2
Without the level, people would not have been able to erect palaces and temples, to build dams, canals, dwellings, and pyramids. The level has had this same shape of an A since the time of the ancient Pharaohs.
This plumb bob model, while not correct, as the Phoenician A is now known, to above the 95% certainty level to be based on an Egyptian how, is better than the dead inverted ox head letter A origin model, shown below:
https://preview.redd.it/qqqx3mr6j6oc1.jpg?width=1220&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c530bc77a63d376d54b4ed1e0fd45e03c3606ef
Next he says that the first five Greek letters are masonry tools:
The letters: A, B, G, D, E, F, refer directly to various masonry tools, as anyone can see by looking at the tools themselves, even though he may not possess the imagination of the isopsephists (Clarke and Englebach, 25A/1930: figures 263 to 267).ā€
The figures cited here, from the appendix "Ancient Egyptian Tools" of Somers Clarke's Ancient Egyptian Masonry , are as follows:
https://preview.redd.it/rrcjs51qm6oc1.png?width=484&format=png&auto=webp&s=98fe6667f0f478476c41d10000df94191b2d4cfe
In figure 263, possibly Psychoyos has envisioned the "wooden brick mould", shape e above, as the maybe the Phoenician H or Etruscan H?
Wooden brick mould = š¤‡ = šŒ‡ = H
In figure 264, below, we can see the Psychoyos plumb bob A shape and also the carpenter's square, which he seems to say is the origin of the Greek G, character: Ī“, symbol:

Maybe he has something like the following in mind:
https://preview.redd.it/0orhwg5wq6oc1.jpg?width=1943&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=282e796e72fb101062ac56ff855e55af6d0d739c
Not sure what letters he sees in the following:
https://preview.redd.it/6hdtz8tin6oc1.png?width=664&format=png&auto=webp&s=c1df051eb3ba6c5710318fb5095f6a9bb1744fb8
