Ive been seeing a lot of ads on insta for photographers who use 35mm film on their wedding shoots. I’m not sure I see too much appeal in this or feel it’s good business move.
With 35mm film you’re slower, you’re limited to one asa per roll, you have limited to no autofocus. You will likely miss moments a digital photographer will not.
Obviously the sentiment of using film is the biggest factor here which I totally understand. Though I do feel that sentiment is something we as photographers feel and understand more than the couples do. I’m sure a lot of couples won’t even know what you mean when you say ‘I shoot film’. You could edit your photos to look vintage and the couple would likely love them the same and you will be a better photographer throughout the day.
Maybe a lot of these guys just use both, and maybe I’m just being contrarian and stuck in my modern ways!

hey all, I'm not sure this is the correct forum for this, but I figured you pirates would know the most about MKV files... I've been [acquiring] anime for ages and finally set up my own media server via Jellyfin (essentially Plex but open source and free), and it's all running off a relatively medium powered media server PC in my house.
8GB RAM, GTX 710, nothing special going on here, but it SHOULD be enough for media.
I've noticed sometimes that MKV files (which is almost always anime) freak out a lot when viewing, the video will skip at certain places and the video stream gets all jarbled up. I figured maybe that was my media server not being able to decode and encode fast enough, but I've viewed the file multiple times on different computers (like copying the file itself and watching it locally, not just viewing it on jellyfin) and it always skips in the same place (I've been trying with just one file for my testing in the interests of science).
At that point it seems like an issue with the file, right? But it does happen with a lot of other files, and it's always MKV files. The odds that every torrent I'm acquiring is containing broken MKV files seems quite low... does anyone else experience this? Am I just crazy? Incredibly unlucky? doing something specifically wrong? I have very little experience in the realm of formats and encoding in this context (I come from an entirely audio background) so any help is appreciated.

I've been into watches since I was about 16. Coming from a lower middle class background, I went to a private high school where a lot of the kids around me had Rolexes, Panerais etc. from their parents. Naturally started building a little collection of my own, full of little super cheap watches such as Vostoks, Seikos, even saved up to buy a Steinhart!
Ten years later, I still like watches a lot. Now finding myself in a position where I am making decent money, have a career etc. and could probably buy a nice piece in the $10k range in 2-3 years, without causing any major financial risk to myself. But 2-3 years can also feel like a hell of a long time to be waiting for something you strongly desire.
I think a lot of people find themselves in this situation. Could buy a really nice piece if they stayed disciplined for a few years, but have-to-stay-disciplined. But what a ton of guys end up doing when faced with this, is to start buying mid range stuff. Midos, CWs, Longines, Seikos etc. you name it. On here, I see a lot photos of collection where someone collected 5-10 pieces in the $200-2000 range. This turns into a spiral that goes on forever, and they might never end up with that one truly nice piece they've always wanted.
I'm not here to say that buying midrange stuff is irrational or that it doesn't make sense. Nothing about collecting watches makes sense. Nobody needs a watch in 2024. But I would love to hear from people who've been in this situation. If you went on a midrange buying spree, and never ended up getting that Omega or Rolex you actually wanted, how do you reflect on that experience? Would you do the same thing again, given the choice? And if you are one of the few who actually managed to stay disciplined and then finally got that huge payoff after years of grinding, how did you deal with the years in-between where you couldn't have what you wanted? Tough place to be as well.
Personally, I once again find myself strongly desiring to purchase a watch. I can't buy the one watch I truly love (Rolex Datejust, fluted, mint green) without compromising the rest of my financial plans. For that reason, I find myself looking for something in the sub $1k range that I can "wear for now". I really like the ice blue Tissot Powermatic 80 for this. But I also know that I shouldn't do it, stay disciplined, and just wait for my Rolex. It's a damn tough spot to be in.
Would love to hear from all of you who've experienced something similar.

A bit of background first: I'm a landscape architect who specializes in trail design and planning - natural surface (dirt), mostly mountain bike optimized, hiking, or multi-use. I also specialize in applying technology to these types of projects (GIS, drones, GPS/GNSS, 3D modeling, etc.), but that goes down a bit of another rabbit hole. In any case, I've always said I'm a landscape architect who knows GIS a lot better than most LA's, but that would still put me below most GIS Professionals. That's why I'm looking for outside help/advice on this subject.
In trail design, slope is one of the most crucial criteria we use while laying out trails. It's a combination of field work and GIS office work, and for the GIS side I'm usually working with a DEM and contours for topography (sometimes very, very high resolution DEMs). Currently, I will create my contours from the DEM, I might make a slope analysis to color my target slopes (ie 6-8%) green, and I'll pull in the highest res orthoaerial I have access to. Then I'll manually draw in trail alignments based on the aerial imagery and the contours/DEM/slope analysis. Finally, I'll run the Profile Tool plugin to check my work and see if there are any major problem areas that my slope is getting too shallow or steep, and make adjustments from there.
This process works alright, but I'm hoping there might be a way to create some more useful tools. Ideally, it would be great if while digitizing, I could either see a readout of the current slope for that line segment, or it would limit me to drawing a line within a certain slope range, etc., all based on the underlying DEM. In lieu of this, it would be nice to have the trail line color segments by slope range (in real time would be amazing, but coloring it after the line is complete would be an option too). I'm assuming the feature would have to be split to show different colors? The catch with this approach is my trail lines usually have a good amount of vertices, so I wouldn't want the feature to be split at each vertex, I'd rather it splits according to slope changes - ie split feature where slope is 0-5.99%, 6-8%, and 8.01+%. I pay for ESRI, but I do almost all of my desktop GIS work in QGIS (I mainly use ESRI for a couple unique tools in desktop and a lot for WebGIS).
I'm also very open to other ideas about this. Overall, I wanted to post this and see if anyone had any simple ideas, or if there was anyone who would be interested in consulting to create these tool(s). I am not looking for free work - if I went this option, I'd give you a written contract and pay as you go, etc. (I own my own LA company so I am all for paying a fair price for work like this). So, I'm in unique situation and figured I'd ask random people on the internet for advice, since we don't fit into many of the boxes you usually see with this question.
Backstory- We adopted two kids from a foreign country 2 years ago. English is not their native language. At adoption my son E (age 6) and his sister C (age 8) could not count to ten, say the alphabet, or write their names (In their native language). Covid basically cancelled two years of school for them, so E never had any formal education (he was in "kindergarten") and in C's 3rd grade class they were learning to color. When we returned to the US, We enrolled C in 3rd grade (She also has a learning disability and an IEP) so she's a year old for her grade but she's doing great. E we enrolled in 1st grade. We started the school year in the US late, and his first year was mainly spent learning to speak English. They've also been receiving outside bilingual tutoring.
So basically E (now 8 yo in 2nd grade) is having to learn K-2 all in this year, and its been rough. My wife and I are considering holding him back a year, because he cannot do 2nd grade level work without lots of support. His testing scores show he's learning at the same rate as the other kids, but since he started so far behind he is still in the bottom 5% overall with his standard scores. He reads at a kindergarten level in English. He's embarrassed in class (tries to hide his papers and scores) and while we've tried very hard to encourage him for working hard and rewarding effort and not results its been rough for him. He behaves very well in class, is not a distraction to others, and socially gets along well.
Our concern is that E will continue to get passed through the system and never catch up and the school will just say its because of his background. If he can spend another year reinforcing 1st and 2nd grade concepts he might be able to succeed in school instead of us all having to do so much work to get him to below average. Studies show if you're going to hold a kid back do it as early as possible. Studies show holding kids back can cause some pretty big emotional and social problems. Studies show for ELL learners repeating a grade can be pretty helpful. The school strongly recommends advancing him the 3rd grade, but in our district its a parent decision. They say that since he is learning they will continue to teach him at the level he's at with in class small group support, etc etc, and that other kids without his background are at similar levels so he'll be fine.
Anyone have any experience holding your kids back? Or being held back yourself? Should I crosspost this to r teachers or something?

More and more often do I find myself having discussions on reddit with people claiming a picture is photoshopped. Both in random subs about National parks and countries, or in Photography specific subs such as postprocessing .
Yes, photoshopping and using AI is still getting more and more common, and not every photo you come across can be assumed to be 100% real, but...
There are still tons of photographers putting in the work of reaching diffucult spots, making their setup, choosing the perfect settings, and making the click for that one beauty of a picture. Just to be turned down by the reddit experts because it must have been photoshopped or even worse "this must be AI, you cant even photograph (insert popular subject) from that angle".
Whenever I get impressed by a great picture in for example SonyAlpha, Im getting annoyed by the narrative that a beauty of a picture must have been shopped because it looks good. Some people almost begin to sound jealous because they are unable to achieve a certain level of photography themselves, so its easier to just call it fake. You have to put in the work, reach that special spot and wait for the right type of light and weather you are looking for.
Basically what i'm asking is, can we start enjoying good photographs again? Curious how you guys think about this subject, do you think we will ever be able to succesfully seperate good photography from AI/photoshop art? How?

Edit: I see the second post already got deleted after I linked the exact google maps location in the comments. It basically was a really long focal length shot of a highway with Grand Teton NP in the background. I was edited a bit dramatic with a pink sky. People instantly called it "photo shopped the heck out of" and "lol this ain’t a thing". This was a real picture by a photographer who probably put a lot of effort in his work.

THIS IS JUST BACKGROUND Hi guys, I am going through a dilemma. I (25 F) and my husband (30 M) are both Pakistani and live in the Gulf. We had our paper marriage, aka Nikkah, in 2017 and got married, i.e., moved into his house, in 2019. We've known each other since 2016, and this was a love marriage. My husband went against his parents' wishes to get married to me, whereas my family is very supportive of whatever choices I make.
During COVID, I moved into my parents' house because of my two younger brothers, 15 and 12 at that time, as my parents got stuck in our home country for six months. My husband would spend four days with me and four days with his parents, i.e., peak COVID lockdown in 2020. Since I've known my husband, this is the first time I accidentally found out his phone password, whereas he always insisted on having all of my social media passcodes in the past.
🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 Anyways, I opened up his Snapchat without any malicious intent to check out his phone to get a few couple photos that we took on his phone, and Snapchat showed memories of last year of the same date. It was with some Filipinos (nothing against them, but where I live, they are usually considered as sex workers). I went and checked the old photos, and I saw that he had pictures with a lot of random women and specifically with his ex-girlfriend in the year 2018. They both had taken a lot of selfies from his sitting very close to each other in bars and even alone in the car, again very close to each other in his arms. I also found out he was asking Filipino their rates for sex work,and he also met one of them in his car and went to meet one in a mall during peak COVID lockdown.
Anyways, I didn't plan to talk to him about it because I was newly wed and didn't want to face consequences, and I thought he might stop on his own. Fast forward a few months later, my parents came back safely, and I moved back into my husband's house with his parents, and this is the time when I first actually started living with them, and within a few weeks, my FIL came to hit me with a shoe when I refused to give him my phone as a punishment for using it so often.
Anyways, things started escalating a lot, and my husband and I were having regular fights because of his parents always crossing boundaries. Then one day, we had a fight, and in the heat of the moment, I accidentally said out about his affairs. So we talked about it, and he said that he met his ex-girlfriend just like a friend as she came back from her home country after a long time, and he was asking for rates of Filipinos for his single friend. When I asked about what did you do with the Filipino you picked up in the car, he said that they just ate shawarmas by the seaside. I was naive and I bought into his narrative, even though I agreed to believe in his story,the uneasy feeling never left to the point where I refuse to have a child with him as I don't think I have a secure future with him.
Due to his parents bickering all the time, I finally snapped back at them, and they made a huge deal out of it and threw me out of the house, and my husband and I both went no contact for one whole year as I demanded a separate house even if I have to face hunger. When we did finally talk again, he convinced me that this won't happen again from his parents' side, and he will start fulfilling my basic rights as a wife, i.e., fulfilling my basic needs, maintaining peace, and protecting.
During this whole time, my father was the one who fulfilled all my basic needs. Anyways, I moved back in with him at the end of 2021, and he did not stay true to his word. He still picks out fights, his parents still shout, scream at me occasionally, and he only gives me a bare minimum monthly allowance, which is not enough for me, and I still have to end up asking my father for money. Please keep in mind I am a university student, and my father pays for all car maintenance, university fees, and essential needs, and the amount that my husband gives me usually goes out in just fuel and a few meals in university.
Anyways, the point is that coming back to his house in 2021 till the end of 2023, we used to constant fights mostly because of his anger issues and just generally being rude and in a bad mood all the time. I had to beg him crying to change his behavior towards me and to be nicer to me when talks, or else I will have no other option than to leave him. He did become nicer for three months until he started being rude again for over daily routine issues until his family was hit by a huge crisis due to his younger brother's fault. That's when he became polite to me again.

He accidentally forgot to lock his phone last month, and I found out he had been texting sex workers again and asking their prices. He was also in contact with a girl, let's call her J, via Snapchat since 2021 till now, and only a few chats were saved in one which he was begging to convince her that I am not his wife rather his sister. Apparently, J saw me and husband out somewhere. I let all of this go again since I thought it's pointless bringing this up as things are now improving. Two weeks after me finding out, I randomly get a dick pic from my husband at 4 am when I was sleeping next to him, and he was awake and came back from a night out with his friends. When I woke up, my husband was asleep; I found it very suspicious since we don't get these kinds of pictures anymore. He forgot to lock his phone again and LO AND BEHOLD he sent the same dick pic to her with me literally sleeping next to him. What fathoms me the most is that how could he not feel any shame with me laying next to him.
Anyways, I talked about it a few days later, and he basically told me that he was trying to check J's loyalty for his friend. Please keep in mind his friend is also married and has 3-4 kids. I asked my husband why did you do it for your friend when you should have understood it the first time I caught you and made an issue out of it, and he said I thought that I would understand him doing all this for a friend, and I should've specifically asked him to stop doing it for his friends if I have such issues. Anyways, a part of me wants to believe his bullshit story, but a part of me knows that he is trying to manipulate me again as I can't even why a person who went against his parents' wishes would literally go out of his way to ruin his marriage. Does he want me to initiate the divorce so that he doesn't get the blame? WTF is it I am so confused, and I would most definitely will never have a child with a person who cheats.

Hey everyone.
So I recently got into data hoarding. It first started with a Plex server, then i archived ALL of my photos. When I was showing my archived photos to my family in the Synology photos app, my grandma asked if I could digitize her thousands upon thousands of photos. Then she spread the word to her emblem club and elks lodge friends that I was doing it for her and now a half dozen of her friends want me to do theirs too. They offered to pay me for the service.
I was looking at scanners, and it seems like consumer grade scanners are a hit and miss. They are either too slow, or the ones that are fast leave marks on the originals. I tried looking up commercial grade scanners but I'm not able to find anything. I'm sure they're expensive, but I've been wanting to start a side business for my wife, so that she can quit her current job and be at home with the kids more. So I'm willing to invest in a good quality machine if the market is there.

3. Bed Time Stories For Kids

Since ChatGPT can talk now with a humourous and sultry voice, you can use it to tell stories to kids. It can be used in the voice of their parents or grandparents.
You can even use a Soft Toy that does the talking to the kid. Earlier, there used to be toys that did that but it only spoke the same sentence. Now it can do back and forth.
You can make special toys that teach kids letters and alphabets. Target it to 2-3 year olds.

4. Be My Eyes For The Blind

Best damn use-case for the blind. Now using a Phone is a bit too much for this but when smart glasses come, every blind person will have a walking companion.
The future is great for the blind.

Too many people are lonely nowadays thanks to technology. It can be a boon for some but a con for others.
You can build a specialized app that gets you an AI Friend since you can talk to it now and it can talk back, it will be great.
I am 100% sure Therapy AI will be much better now with Audio/Video integration. In future, we will have fully featured Robots like Tesla's Optimus and Figure that will have such functionalities built-in.
I bet this comes in <2 years judging by the pace at which AI and Robotics are accelerating.

6. Comic Books

Now that text can be easily created with ChatGPT, why not create Comic Books easily.
Its a huge creative exercise for comic creators. Webtoons have exploded in popularity and many KDramas are made out of them like Death's Game and Marry My Husband.
This will increase the creativity exponentially.

Fonts are expensive. Like really expensive.
Funnily enough ChatGPT can create fonts easily now. Take the most popular fonts, tweak them a bit, and create entire new sets of fonts.
Look at the creations explode on Creative Market. Font directories like Typewolf can now create their own fonts easily as they already have distribution.

I have been taking digital photos at theme parks and other places since 1996. I have over 200,000 photos on my website, and am in the process of adding 1400 more from Convergence Station.
I have been sorting the gallery the past two nights, and am still still trying to figure out where certain areas are (like the trash area with the music/drums/etc).
I have been using the Meow Wolf credits page to try to find the names/locations of various rooms. If I took multiple photos of a "project" I am trying to put them in their own folder, named as the Meow Wolf site shows: https://credits.meowwolf.com/convergence-station/#projects
