2024.05.16 17:03 DeanInLondon Can I fit AC exhaust in the ventilation/heath recovery exhaust vents?

Hi Reddit! Here’s the situation I’m facing: I live in a new built that gets very hot in the summer.
It has windows that open too awkwardly to fit the AC exhaust through those windows without the heat going right back in my flat.
I have a nuaire MRXBOX95 ventilation/heath recovery unit, and according to the diagram, there are extraction vans that push the air from the kitchen and bathroom outside.
According to that diagram, those extraction conducts to outside are insulated.
Could I plug my portable AC’s exhaust pipe to those extraction vents? Would it be an efficient and safe way of doing so?
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.16 16:58 Dreldan WiFi hotspot for Europe

I’ve looked around and haven’t yet been able to find an answer to my specific question. My family will be traveling to Croatia, Italy, Greece, and lastly Ireland. I am wondering if there is one wifi hot spot provider that we can take with us on the entire trip or if we will need to swap out when we switch countries? Oh to add we would want to pick it up in Zagreb and return it in Dublin if possible.

Thursday….Trash day….the cans are out and ready!
The sky is grey and the morning sun is working hard to get through the Marine Layer. She will get through but it will take some more time.
Things are all good here. We are hoping that Mr. Spots passes the kidney stones and doesn't have to have an operation to remove them. The tube is off because there is no news which is of value to any of us. Click is a most welcome sound,
I continue to work on the wiring for the layer below Como's Engine facility. Some of the track power and LEDs will have to go through two switch sets of contacts to operate properly. This is different than anywhere else on the RR. The four routes that need this wiring are (1) the long loop, (2) the crossing loop, (3) the loop to NYC and back and (4) the loop to the South. All the rest has to happen without affecting any of the other routes.
It is complicated and will require a different way of wiring switches for both track power and LEDs. Two switches will have to agree to turn on Green and they have all be red when the bypass track has or the dinner's two tracks have been selected. Looks great but is a real devil to wire.
I know you are following all that. I can tell because I don't hear lots of clicks. It is a wonderful track layout but a devil to wire properly, But I will figure it out ... just takes a lot of time ,,, trial and errors. Relays with lots of contacts are needed.
So the day has started. The coffee is warm. I got up very early due to the need for thinking through how to wire the RRs middle layer below Como's Engine Facility. I will figure it out some time in the near future. Oh well, better than landscaping.
The weeds are looking like they are going to die, Just what was needed, A few will live on but I will get them later. That is after new grass seed has gone into the dirt and is starting to grow.
I do need to rebuild the latch for the fence gate by the garage. Like the RR looked simple but really was going to be a lot of work. And it isn't done yet. Ugh. I think we are the last people on the street to do landscaping ourselves. The only other families still doing their own landscaping are the family across the street in Rita's previous house. Oh well, that keeps expense low so the RR can have those funds.
The marine layer is breaking up as Miss SunShine is getting through one spot at a time. I will draw up the two switch control diagrams and see if that solves things. I don't know if that will or it won;t get all of it working as needed.
Take care ... The tube is off and that is good because the news isn't positive most of the time. The US government isn't getting things done for the people like it should ...
The sky is interesting, Dark and light with a low sun lighting things in a different way. It will be a fine day for all of us because we will do what is best and that makes our day great.
Bow wows all the way around with Meows following the barking. The Bluebirds chirp their happy tunes and the trash cans are on the street waiting to be picked up.
All is well ... so back to the track plan for the RR. It isn't complete but little by little is getting figured out, I never thought that this part would be so difficult to design, A challenge but it too will get figured out and then wired,
Over and out ,,, the KR is done for this Thursday. Click.
See, there is an end to this blab blab

Notes:

Marvin Harrison Jr.: Marv might be one of the safest draft selections in a long time. With prototypical size to be a top receiving option and landing in a promising situation, he's primed for success. He's entering a barren receiving room, and is paired with the talented Kyler Murray at QB. Harrison's precise routes maintain speed throughout the entirety of his route. His quick feet and sharp breaks allow him to easily separate from defenders. His excellent body control translates into stunning contested catches. However, he's not without flaws. Marv lacks twitch and offers very little yards after catch ability, both of which are traits I look for in receivers. He occasionally shows low effort, especially when he knows a play isn't coming to him. Lastly, he tends to avoid contact and will look to go out of bounds rather than fight for extra yards. This is not a hot take, but I would not hesitate to select him at 1.01 if my QB situation was secure.
Malik Nabers: Malik Nabers has exceptional athleticism and is a playmaker with the ball in his hands. Nabers has a sturdy build and impressive contact balance – he's a threat to turn any reception into a house call. Like Marv, he's walking into a situation where he'll dominate targets without much competition. However, unlike Marv, he won't benefit from a star QB like Kyler Murray; instead, he'll rely on Daniel Jones or Tommy DeVito. While Nabers checks all of the analystical boxes, there are some notable concerns. He lacks refinement in his route running, evident in instances where he struggles to maintain footing, leading to incompletions and interceptions (FSU, Alabama, and Florida). Additionally, his decision-making raises red flags, highlighted by a 2023 arrest for illegally concealing a firearm while on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
Rome Odunze: Rome Odunze is a big-bodied receiver that has prototypical size and speed. He has exceptional hands and elite body control that allow him to consistently pull in contested catches. Rome is already building a rapport with fellow rookie Caleb Williams, and they should have a strong connection for years to come. However, his year one fantasy impact may be limited by a rookie QB and a competitive receiver room.
Xavier Legette: Xavier Legette's analytical profile is the reddest of red flags. Legette has an 8th percentile breakout age, and only one year of high-end college production despite minimal competition for targets. That being said, I loved his tape and am willing to take the risk on him. Standing at 6'1" and 221 lbs, Legette looks like a man amongst boys on the field. Boasting both size and impressive 4.39 speed, he has all the physical tools to be a game-changer. While not overly twitchy, he has a knack for making plays in open space. With strong hands and great body control, he excels at making contested catches. I understand the concerns with his analytical profile and the Panthers' situation, but I think Legette is a great value in rookie drafts.
Trey Benson: Benson's explosive burst makes him a constant home run threat, capable of breaking off big runs. He has a sturdy frame with exceptional contact balance that allows him to churn out extra yards through contact. His immediate fantasy expectations should be tempered, as he will likely be in a timeshare or backing up James Conner for the 2024 season.
Roman Wilson: Roman Wilson is a dynamic slot receiver with explosive burst and reliable hands. Despite joining a run-heavy offense, he's poised to have an immediate path to targets.
Jermaine Burton: Jermaine Burton is a confident, assertive receiver, with polished route running and excellent hands—he didn't drop a single pass in 2023. While he lacks explosiveness after the catch and his character concerns have drawn attention, his talent and landing spot make him worth the gamble in rookie drafts.
Malachi Corley: Malachi Corley is a twitchy playmaker, with solid speed, and remarkable contact balance, which makes him one of the best yards-after-catch receivers in this draft class. Corley could improve as a route runner, tends to struggle in contested catch situations, faced weaker competition in college, and had targets schemed open for him. Despite these knocks against him he has considerable upside.
Adonai Mitchell: Adonai Mitchell is a size-speed receiver that still has some work to do to bring it all together. Notably, he struggles as a natural hands catcher, often double-clutching the ball. He offers no YAC ability and doesn't look comfortable with the ball in his hands.
Ben Sinnott: Ben Sinnott was my TE2 pre-combine—I absolutely loved everything on his tape. Watching his tape reminded me of a young George Kittle. His athleticism and twitchiness are top-tier, paired with aggression that shows up every play. Sinnott eagerly embraces blocking assignments and his coaches consistently find ways to get the ball in his hands. He secured second-round draft capital, landed on a team with an exciting rookie QB, and has minimal competition in the tight end room. Sinnott is setup for immediate success.
Ray Davis: Ray Davis has a thick build and low center of gravity which gives him exceptional contact balance. With fluid hips, solid burst, and consistently fighting for extra yardage, he projects to be the thunder to James Cook's lightning.
Javon Baker: Javon Baker is a former 4 star recruit that had offers from multiple major programs, before ultimately deciding to attend Alabama. After two seasons at Alabama he transferred to UCF, where he broke out. Baker is a crisp route runner, has great body control, and is twitchy with loose hips. He plays with attitude and tenacity and is a big play waiting to happen. When I watched his tape I instantly saw shades of Stefon Diggs—he is a player that I desperately want on my dynasty rosters.
Kimani Vidal: Kimani Vidal was a pre-draft sleeper I had my eye on—but I had concerns about his potential draft capital and landing spot making him irrelevant. Luckily, he was drafted by a team without a clear lead back, that projects to run the ball a lot. Vidal has great initial burst and twitchiness. His impressive college production and solid pass-catching skills makes him a great candidate for a late-round dart throw at running back.
Rasheen Ali: Rasheen Ali is a human highlight reel on the field—with incredible agility, explosive initial burst, and reliable hands, he's a versatile threat. Standing at 5'11" and weighing 206 lbs, he has the ideal size to shoulder a lead back role. However, his path to significant playing time is blocked by Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson. Ali is an excellent addition to the end of a roster or taxi squad, with huge upside when opportunities arise due to injuries.
Keilan Robinson: Keilan Robinson is an exciting running back prospect, that had multiple offers from major programs before ultimately committing to Alabama, and later transferring to Texas. Despite being 5'8" and 191 lbs, he plays much larger than his size suggests. Robinson has explosive burst, speed on demand, and great lateral agility—he absolutely explodes on tape. I think he is an interesting late-round dart throw or a priority UDFA pickup.

2024.05.16 16:33 allhaildeez Race Report - Ironman Texas 2024

Ciao Gang

It’s been a few weeks – IM Texas is done and dusted. As one would expect, I’m fully recovered. Not quite, but ouais yeah here goes my race recap
Swim – 1:22:05
T1 – 00:08:29
Bike – 6:51:34
T2 – 00:08:29 (exact same lol)
Run – 6:22:40
~Background Info~
Very sporty and athletic 26 year old who weighs give or take 185 lbs on any given day. Have run two 70.3’s with generally good and comfortable results. Have ran like a dozen marathons and all-around active person. Fitness is “in” right now so I keep busy ya hear
Socially… I stopped drinking two months before the race (varied 5-30 drinks a week before though…). Never changed my diet at all leading up to the race
~Prep~
This area can get a little complicated – I was scheduled to run IM Texas in 2023, but my so called best friend decided to snap my leg (compound fracture of my tibia and fibula) (very wicked) in half while playing soccer 3 months before race day. So after surgery, one month without standing really, one month using crutches, one month using a cane, endless $$$ spent at physical therapy medical bills etc. I find myself in July of 2023 more or less ready to start training again for IM 2024. I sign up (this time with early benefits so I don’t lose all my money again if I have to cancel, thanks Ironman).

I bought a training plan from MyProCoach. 24 Week Intermediate plan to be exact. Between that plan, help from reddit, Instagram influencers, and my self-proclaimed expert father – I morphed a plan that more or less would hopefully (ambitious I know) get me across the finish line in one piece.
~Training~
My new concoction of a training plan generally consisted of two swims a week (Monday and Thursday), one track workout (usually Tuesdays), one hard bike effort on the trainer (usually Wednesday), fun day Friday (no workout unless I was making up for one I missed), long bike ride (Saturdays), and one long run (Sundays) a week. I would generally build up for three weeks then take a “rest” week with 3 to 4 light workouts just to stay loose-ish. I’d up the tempos, intervals, effort, distances etc. every time I got to a new 3 week build phase.
This is more or less what I stuck to for 6 months. I coach high school lacrosse and still play a decent amount of soccer so there was some tweaking here and there to still accompany those. But this was the plan and I can safely say that I did ~80%~ of my planned workouts. The other 20% fell to the wayside as I was still trying to be a socially active fun 26 yr old guy who likes to drink with his friends (loves to drink with his friends)

~Week of the race~
I live in Houston, TX where the race is (really it’s in the woodlands but who cares), so there was no extensive travel for me or anything like that.

I got in some small runs, light bike rides, and swam twice the week of the race. Logistically, I think IM Texas is setup very well. I knew the course very well as a lifelong Houstonian so there was no prep necessary for that. Check-in was easy. Transitions are a bit different at IM Texas than my other tri’s, so that was a small learning curve. But again, nothing to be intimidated by or worry about.

~Race Day~
Managed to go to sleep by 10 pm the night before, so waking up at 4:30am wasn’t the worst thing I’d ever done. Woke up, ate a breakfast sandwich, slammed some coffee, and began hydrating. Got transition about 5:30ish, had my dad and a friend drop me off so didn’t have to walk at all. Got in there, setup bike computer, bottles, etc. I managed to get a BM (dump) out here, which was huge. Things were looking up. Grabbed my wetsuit and then got dropped off at swim start, again no walking which was awesome.
Got to swim start and started getting pretty nervous (all the leg injury shit and 18 months of training were all for this). Water temperature was 75.5 degrees, so wetsuit legal. Luckily had my family and a friend to keep my calm and get my wetsuit on. The gun goes for the pros so I hop in the queue with the other swimmers seeded around the 1:20 to 1:30 mark.

~Swim~
I hop in the water and immediately start worrying that it’s going to get toasty in this wetsuit. In this swim, the buoys are on your left side. I immediately pop out to the right some to get out of all the rough water and kicking feet. There is a park adjacent to the swim start for about 300 meters and I actually see my family walking along the edge of the water as I get out into the lake (mentally huge for me to see them and take my mind off of things while I get in the groove of it all). For about 20 minutes everything is fine, I’m feeling okay, wasn’t overheating in the wetsuit, didn’t let my heart rate get too high (it has in all my other tri swims), and I was sighting well without having to pick my head up too much. At this point the lifeguards/kayak/paddleboard people were pinching us a little too hard. I get they are there for safety and to keep people on course, but I felt like they were funneling us into a tight swim pack for no reason. I totally understand that the swim is dangerous and people can die if help doesn’t get there quick enough, but I felt it was putting a little too much stress on the swimmers. I like to swim away from the pack so maybe this was just me. At the halfway point of the swim, you get funneled through this floating arch (I think it’s for timing purposes?). Whatever the reason for it, it bottlenecked all of us. We were swimming probably 10 people wide through a 7-yard-wide arch. Had to protect your head on that for sure to keep from getting kicked. While I thought it was stupid, it did have a great little benefit. The way we were funneled through created a nice little current and I ended up riding that wave for maybe 75 meters or so. Stupid feature but nice little boost. At this point I’m feeling great. I haven’t been kicked yet, the lungs feel good, I’m not overheating and I have the space to swim in. IM Texas is unique because at 80% of the way through the swim, you start swimming through a canal that people can actually cheer for you and walk with you as you go. I had told my family I’d be on the left side of the canal and as soon as I get into it I pop my head out and see my family, friends, and smoking hot girlfriend cheering me on (again this was mentally huge). I start rocking through the canal which is maybe 25 yards wide and felt like I had a current helping me the whole way through. As I’m swimming, mu friends/family are walking right there with me. It’s such a unique way for people to cheer you on that I got out of the water in a great mood with a smile on my face. I seeded myself perfectly as I got out at 1:22:05.
~Bike~
Going into the bike, IM Texas is known for having absolutely brutal headwinds heading south towards downtown Houston. And with close to 90 miles of the course being on a closed toll road. There is nothing to protect you from a wicked 45 miles of Texas headwind.
But before you get to the toll road, there is a little bit of a “circuit” you go through. So, I hop on the bike and get going. Immediately the course feels a little congested so I try to stay off the bars and ride defensively. Sure enough 8 miles in, big crash ahead as a volunteer golf cart cut off a rider and he crashed hard (thoughts and prayers with the rider). And that right there was the story of the day. HUGE crashes and HEAVY headwinds. I witnessed 6 crashes throughout the ride. Between riders coming through the water stations too fast, cones blowing out on the course, pelotons forming to avoid the wind, inattentive riding (we’re all tired I can understand this), it was a hard day on the course. Thoughts and prayers specifically for the one crash I saw where the organizers made us dismount and walk past. Not sure the context of the crash, but the rider was in a really bad situation. I think I averaged 8 mph heading south into the wind and 28 mph with the tailwind. Haven’t checked my bike data as I still have a bit of PTSD. Between the chaos of everything (I heard rumors a tesla was in self-drive mode on the course and caused a crash…?), I managed to make it to the end about 20 minutes over my 6:30:00 goal. I got off the bike to a boisterous cheer from a phenomenal group of friends and family and walked into transition.
~Run~
Going into the run I wanted to be around 5:30:00. I knew this might be ambitious for me because I didn’t really have that many brick sessions in my training plan. But, I’ve run a few marathons straight off the couch in my day. So, if anything, I know how to suffer through a long slow marathon. Honestly, I don’t have much to say about the first ten miles. My legs felt fine coming off the bike, I was comfortable at a 11:00 min/mile pace , felt good hydrating and getting some food down. Right after mile 10, started feeling some small knots in my stomach. Mile by mile, those knots started to get worse and worse. Every time I got to an aid station, I was able to delay the inevitable by getting down a banana, then potato chips at the next one, then it was chicken broth. By the time my family and friends saw me at the end of the second lap, I was in a bad spot. Was walking three minutes and running one (something like that). The stomach eventually morphed into full body discomfort. The HR kept getting sky high after minimal effort. I knew I was in for a tough last 8 miles. That last 8 miles took maybe 3 hours? I’m not sure, it’s all a blur. The pain finally culminated at mile 25.5, where the wrath of god came down on me and I vomited for 10 maybe 15 minutes, who knows. But at this point I knew I could literally crawl to the finish. I picked my head up and saw my buddy’s girlfriend walking toward me, I figured they had sent her to come find me as the gap between my last time split was getting astronomical. I picked my ass up off the ground and full body cramp runned to the finish line. Will never forget the feeling of having so many friends and family cheering me on to help me get over that line. The only bummer at the finish is I paid all that money for someone to tell me an Ironman on a microphone and I didn’t even hear it. Anyways – life goal accomplished. I’ll see ya at the next one.
P.S. I'm an open book, shoot me any questions you have on my training, advice, hate, love, whatever you want to say

2024.05.16 16:28 P_0_VV Camping in Skeleton Park

Part 1

The official story is that I hit my head. According to the lawyer I wasn't lucid enough to be a reliable witness, and honestly, I'm starting to believe that might be the truth. It's certainly easier to accept that everything was all just some nightmare.
But if my mind wasn't playing tricks on me, and those fuck-heads didn’t have anything to do with my friend’s disappearance, then there truly is no explanation for what happened.
My therapist and parents both agree. The best way to preserve my sanity is to chalk it all up to my imagination. But I see understanding in their eyes when I recount the events. They want to believe me, I know it. That alone is enough to fuel my doubt.

School had begun that September with mourning. I only knew the guy who passed away by face and name. It had happened a month after his graduation, and two months before his first year at Cornell.
During the intercom-ordered moment of silence, I looked out through the classroom. Some were bored, some cried. Many shifted in their seats and were glancing around, like myself, counting every second till the awkwardness would end.
It ended sooner than we thought when a kid with sports goggles a size too big bouncing on his face slammed the door open, obliviously clarifying his attendance.
I'm embarrassed to say that this kid, Aiden, was the only friend I had made in high school until this point. I have a hard time introducing myself to others, but being friends with a prepubescent outcast wasn't making that any easier.
After middle school, my family moved to the small village we live in now. It was a brainless choice because my Mom had found better work, my Dad wanted to be closer to his aging parents, and I desperately wanted out of my old school.
Aiden was the first kid to introduce himself when I transferred last year. I realized he was the token 'weird kid' way too late to make it into any social circles. I know it sounds like I'm a shit friend, but that's the way our relationship turned out. Sure, we told our parents and teachers we were friends, but in reality, it was more a tolerance than friendship.
After all, we didn't have anyone else.
For once, I was thankful for Aiden's lack of awareness. It gave me something to focus on instead of the depressing silence strangling the room.
After realizing his mistake, he whispered an apology, sat down, and pulled out an insect encyclopedia from his book bag. What a nerd.
I distracted myself by reading the book from over his shoulder, and before I knew it, lights were turned back on and class began in earnest.

I was able to learn what had happened by eavesdropping on hallway gossip between my classes.
Eight kids, six seniors and two juniors, had found a cave in a region of forest known as Skeleton Park. With that discovery, they decided to add spelunking to their pre-graduation bucket list.
Skeleton Park is the setting of countless local ghost stories, which made it a hot spot for rebellious teen antics. Kids would do everything there: party, drink, smoke, fuck, and everything in between. They even crawled around in caves apparently.
When I first moved, I was a skeptic with no intent of exploring the woods. But one creepy phenomenon always unnerved me. For some reason, animals completely avoided the area.
I initially dismissed this as fiction, like all the other folk tales, until I started walking my dog, Paddy, along the town's bike trail.
The trail runs parallel to the remains of a stone wall outlining Skeleton Park. The first couple of times I walked along it, I didn't notice anything peculiar. But after my Dad first told me about the rumors, I became aware that the area was unnaturally silent. No birds chirped in the trees, no flies buzzing, and no rustling from rodents or any other animals.
Even more surreal, on several occasions I saw deer stop at the wall and walk along it instead of passing through the area. It was like there was an invisible border they refused to cross.
With this context, I'm sure you can understand the reaction of the locals when eight kids entered, and only seven escaped two days later, traumatized and bruised.
Honestly, I was surprised to not have heard about the event over the summer, closer to when it happened. Even more strange though, was how unwilling Aiden was to talk about the incident.
He was the kind of kid who had a strong opinion about everything. On top of that, he was constantly bringing up horror movies, or Creepypastas he had found online. But when I asked his opinion on this summer's events during recess, he only shrugged. Despite the nonchalant response, the look on his face told me that it bothered him. So I didn’t press, and let the subject go.
At the time I'd guessed that he might've had some connection to the kid that went missing. In a way, he did.

After an exhausting day of attempts from teachers to console their students with speeches, candy, and exceptional lenience, I was ready to go home.
I expected to find Aidan at the usual spot by the bike racks, where we met each day to walk home. Instead, there was an audience next to the bikes, forming a ring around two disheveled figures.
The flying fists and shouting could only mean one thing, so I kept my distance. Then I heard Aidan yell center, “Fucker!’ and saw a glimpse of his face spitting from a bloody mouth onto the other fighter.
Even though his back was to me, I could tell Aidan’s opponent was easily 5 inches, and 60 pounds heavier than my friend.
Teachers didn’t arrive to break up the fight before the two were on the ground, Aidan mounted with arms up, desperately trying to block blows.
A whistle was blown, and people began running away as my math teacher desperately tried to pry the football player off of Aidan.
He fought back the grown man and was finally pulled away when two more adults rushed to help. The boy was screaming at Aiden with carnal rage.
"You're a fucking liar! How dare you, I'm going to fucking kill you if I ever see you again!"
Aidan was still screaming too, but backed away willingly.
"I'm telling the truth dumbass! You were trespassing! You should be lucky we didn't press charges!"
Aiden looked bad but waved the teachers off whenever they asked if he was OK. Blood poured from his forehead, mouth, and nose. He had at least one black eye.
The other guy, I learned from the crowd, was one of the two juniors who had gone to the cave. He didn't have as many cuts or bruises but was supporting his weight on one leg and his friend's shoulder. Multiple teachers forced him into a chair while they waited for a nurse to arrive.
While the crowd control was distracted, Aiden sneaked over to me and whispered that we needed to get out of there. A couple of minutes later, the two of us were walking home like nothing had ever happened.
It took me a while before I dared to ask Aiden for the full story. He didn't even let me finish my question, which let me know he was more or less his usual self.
"My family inherited the property everyone calls Skeleton Park. It's not haunted, it's not toxic, it's not the home of a satanic sex cult; it's just a piece of forest that's been in my family for a couple of generations."
He spat a dribble of red onto the sidewalk, and I realized I'd never seen Aiden get violent before. We had our share of bullying this past year, but he would always shrug it off and laugh. He wouldn't even try to fight back. We would just get pushed around a bit, and he'd make a quip afterward about the guys' weight or smell.
"Every summer, my dad and I drive around the perimeter putting up trespassing signs, and every year they get ripped down. We get police calls once a month during the summer that somebody came limping out of there with a broken arm or leg, and they have the balls to demand we do something about it. It's not our fault nobody follows the law around here. It's the fucking woods, and it's our private property. What the hell are we even supposed to do?"
To be honest, I hadn't even considered Skeleton Park could've been private property. Though I believed everything Aiden said, I had never seen any signs along the border wall. Embarrassed from being one of those trespassers, I looked away and stayed silent as Aiden continued.
"The area is just too big. There are too many places to enter, and there's no way to block it all off. Though it's not like that'll stop anybody. I feel bad that somebody died, but I'm also a little bit thankful. Maybe now, people will think twice before messing around out there."
We walked in silence until reaching the junction where we would have to part ways. I was tired and wanted to head home, but I also was worried that Aiden would be jumped by some of the seniors if he was alone. It had happened before, and his earlier brawl could've been seen as a declaration of war.
Instead of voicing these concerns, however, I asked if he wanted to play video games at his house. He was surprised by the request but agreed.
I was on edge with every passing car, and every blind turn, but thankfully we weren’t attacked. After a couple more minutes of walking, we made it to Aiden’s house. His Dad was outside watering the garden. He turned, noticing our approach in the corner of his eye, but his planned greeting died in his mouth when he saw the dried blood coating Aiden’s face.
"Holy Shit! what did you do this time?" he exclaimed, running over to inspect his son’s injuries. "Oh, hey Brian," he added, smiling briefly at me before returning to his analysis.
Mr. Eriks was cool for a dad. Aiden never had a bad thing to say about him, and the way he handled everything that happened in the following months would only increase my admiration for him. He'd raised Aiden by himself, and I would've considered him a second friend if he wasn't 40 years older than me.
After determining the damage wasn't all that bad: a cut on Aidan's forehead and lip producing most of the blood, the three of us went inside.
Aiden went upstairs to take a shower, and his dad privately thanked me for walking him home. It didn’t take long for me to cave, and ask Mr. Eriks about the park.
"Yeah, we do own it," he answered while preparing snacks for Aiden and me. " My wife, Aiden's mom, inherited it before she passed away, and then it was signed over to me. To be honest, I don't know too much about it, and she didn't either. We just used it to go camping there sometimes, back before Aiden was born. Now we go together because it reminds us of her."
"Did you ever run into people up there, when you're camping?"
"Yeah, though not in the fall and winter when we usually go. I have the police's local number on speed dial for when it happens. Usually, it's just teens though. Kids tend to run away as soon as they see an adult with a flashlight. Paranormal or not, they know they're not supposed to be there- You staying with us for dinner Brian?"
At this point, I was too curious about the truth of Skeleton Park to leave, so I nodded and said I just needed to check with my parents.
After a phone call with my mom, some pizza rolls, and a couple of rounds of Fortnite, the afternoon stress had mostly faded away.
Me and Aidan were sitting in his room, scrolling Netflix for a slasher film to watch, when I finally asked what I'd been dying to know the entire afternoon.
"So, why was that guy saying you're a liar?"
Aiden chuckled at the question.
"He refused to believe my family owned the property his friend died on."
"Why did you even say anything? You know that just makes them want to beat you up more, right?"
"I'm tired of everybody using our land like a public park, I'm tired of picking up condoms left by people I go to school with, and I'm tired of keeping quiet about it. I tried explaining it to people in middle school. Our first project in fifth grade was a presentation about something important to us, I did mine about the park. Nobody believed me, and it got me socially exiled for the next four years. "
I ignored the urge to explain that there was probably more to his social exile than a get-to-know-you presentation from four years ago.
"That's fair I guess," I said instead. "You're dad says you go camping there."
"Yeah, on three-day weekends, and sometimes longer on breaks. Mostly in the fall and winter when there are less trespassers."
"You don't find it creepy camping there? Even without the trespassers?"
"You mean because of the silence?" Aiden smiled and looked over at me. "Yeah, the rumor about the animals is true as far as I can tell. Sure. It's kind of weird, but in winter it's kind of beautiful too. After a blizzard, there's nothing to disturb the snow, and it's kinda like the whole forest has gone to sleep. With the snow and no animals, it can get so quiet that you hear your own heart beating."
He looked off past me with a feeling of nostalgia, but all I felt was chills.
"I can take you if you want," Aiden added. "I'll have to ask my dad, but I think it would be fun to have another person camp with us."
"I'll think about it," was my way of declining without saying no.
Aiden just shrugged. "Suit yourself. Offer still stands if you ever change your mind."
Much to my annoyance, we weren’t even able to finish the movie. My Mom called, saying she was outside to pick me up an hour into our viewing of The Blair Witch Project.
I went to bed wondering how anyone could feel safe camping in a place like that. After contemplating taking Aidan up on his offer, I concluded there could be nothing that would make me spend the night there. Ironically, it would be less than a week before I changed my mind.

Three days later, I was walking Paddy along our usual route when she stopped and looked up at something beyond the stone wall, into Skeleton Park. She stood like a statue, eyes wide and fixated on some invisible thing.
I tried tugging the leash, pulling out a treat, begging, and making all kinds of sounds, but she just stood there. Paddy was a six-year-old golden retriever who easily weighed as much as I did, so I couldn't do much more than wait for her to move.
Suddenly, she began barking wildly at the air.
I tried approaching, but she growled at me, a sound I had never heard from her before, and I was forced to back away.
Before I could even process what was happening. She leaped over the wall and ran at full speed into the woods. It all happened so quickly that I had no time to tighten my grip on the leash.
She sprinted straight into the woods, and I chased after her, but I didn't make it far without tripping on a root hidden among the leaves. My knee was split open by something as I fell, and it took all my strength, fighting past the shock, to get back up. After recovering, I looked in all directions, but couldn't see Paddy anymore. I could only hear the tossing of leaves and branches in the distance.
Then there was nothing. Not a single sound. I'm not sure why I didn't question the sudden silence back then. It wasn't the gradual fade into silence you would expect from something running away. It was as if somebody had just hit a mute button on everything but the wind through the trees.
I don't know, maybe I'm misremembering the details.
Patty's disappearance doesn't matter anyway. We never found her, and dogs don’t live for twenty years, so at this point, we never will.
After taking a moment to recover from the shock, I limped home crying and told my parents what had happened. My Dad called the police because it was the only thing we could think of, but all they did was apologize and recommend we put up posters.
They couldn't do anything even if they wanted to. After all, she ran onto private property.
After that, the last thing I could think to do was call Aiden. His dad promised they could search the park that night, and he also offered to take me for an extended search the following weekend in case they didn’t find anything.
Of course, they didn't find her, just half of a leash wrapped around a branch. At least, that's what my parents told me the Eriks had found, they never actually let me see it.
A day before the trip, the Forecast started predicting snow: Saturday night into Sunday, eight inches, wet.
I probably should've given up then. Instead, I told Aiden this would probably be my only chance to find Paddy, insisting she wouldn't survive in the snow. After making sure with his dad, we continued with the plan and headed out after school Friday night.

While it hurts keeping this story in, reliving the memories is almost as painful. So I'm going to take a break writing for now and continue in a day or two. If anyone has a scientific explanation for why animals were avoiding that area, or for my dog's behavior, please let me know.
Thanks for reading, B

2024.05.16 15:48 RockyGermanShepard Looking opinions for a fanfic

The idea came to me a few weeks ago, but I didn't decide to write it down until yesterday. After a few attempts, I'm publishing a new chapter every day. It's about SliceOfLife, a genre that I personally like a lot thanks to how well it mixes with comedy, adventure and other things.
As for the plot, it's similar to that of a series, but only with Pokémon, without trainers or stadiums or competitions or anything like that (since I personally don't like those concepts). Everything takes place in Onamuya, an island near the equator that is very close to Alola. It takes place in a forest near "Burning Town", where there is a large pokemon community (wild Pokemon that are adapted, abandoned, babies, etc...) that lives together in harmony and mutual support, as a city more.
Row is a very different Rowlet (fatter, with darker fur, strange golden spots and barely knows how to use his powers) who has just arrived to the island. There he meets Percy (a Riolu) and Eevee, who will introduce him to the place, being welcomed as one more. In the future, he will found with the rest of his friends an expedition team, to learn about the history of the forest and the mountain that rules the forest, which used to be a volcano.
There are many more things to say, but I prefer you to see it on your own.

2024.05.16 15:25 Livid-Ad-9402 2024 tomato review/preliminary thoughts, Houston, TX

Hello,
The tomatoes are in full force for me here in Houston. I am growing 27 varieties this year, a mix of hybrids and heirlooms, mostly new to me. I wanted to share some preliminary thoughts. I didn't start them all at the same time so I haven't gotten to taste them all yet.
I am pruning my larger slicing tomatoes to a single leader.
So far I have tried, Margold - grown before, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye - Grown Before, Black Krim - Grown Before, Supersweet 100 - grown before, Cherry Brandywine - grown before, and I think the rest are new to me. Riesentraube, Burmese Sour, Purple Boy, Margaret Curtain, Brown Sugar, Prudens Purple, Pink Boar, Sunset Torch, Red Torch, Blue Cream Berry, Edox, Black Cherry
For the ones I have grown before Margold is producing very well. These plants make all sizes of tomato, some softball size and some more like a tennis ball, they are yellow with a beautiful red blush and are juicy while also being dense and meaty, low acid, floral/fruity, and absolutely delicious. I will always grow this tomato.
Pink Berkeley Tie dye is another favorite, to me it has the flavor of a brown/purple tomato while also having the acid I like in a tomato so it is a nice mix. My two plants have also been very prolific and one also died suddenly! Ha. This is my first year experimenting with growing some tomatoes directly in the ground and I guess it is more perilous! The rest of my tomatoes are in raised beds.
Black Krim - obviously great, we know it and love it, my plant got bacterial stem rot and is somehow still growing and producing/setting fruit. I know I should remove the plant but I haven't.
So now for Margaret Curtain, Carbon, and Purple Boy. To me these and Black Krim all taste more or less the same. I've only had one or two from each plant but don't notice any big difference and think growing one of these would probably be fine.
The Margaret curtain has set the most fruit and a lot of very big tomatoes, but like the margold, some are softball size, some tennis ball size, but I am very impressed with the level of production.
Carbon, poor production, good fruit set on first cluster and then pretty much done.
Purple Boy, absymal. This is a Hybrid and I am shocked by its poor performance. Even as a seedling it was a thin, wimpy, wispy and slow growing pathetic specimen that I wasn't sure would live. Not comparable at all to other hybrids. When the plant was about 3 1/2 feet tall I did accidentally break off the central leader and that slowed the growth but even at that point it had only set one fruit. It has since rebounded in growth with several flower clusters but it has yet to set another fruit. The tomato tasted good and like the other dark ones mentioned but absolutely piss poor vigor and fruit set.
Brown Sugar - nice fruit set and clusters of medium size tomatoes, they are mostly between the size of a clementine and a tennis ball. I have only tasted one, and maybe I didn't let it ripen enough but it was nothing special, not particularly sweet or flavorful.
Burmese Sour - I chose to grow these, perhaps incorrectly, thinking that my hot and humid climate would be similar to that of Burma. But who knows. This plant was the first to look diseased with black spots on the foliage, it is not particularly vigorous and stopped growing taller around the 3 1/2 foot mark. But! It has set a lot of fruit so it is kind of winning me over. Apparently these tomatoes are meant to be used in curries where you wouldn't want a sweet tomato. I tasted one raw and I liked it. It was very bright and refreshing, like a nice tomato taste with the acidity turned up. These are also very pretty with that classic heirloom shape like costoluto genovese.
Pink Boar - maybe I am missing something here but its just like a smaller version of pink berkeley tie dye. Probably won't grow again.
Prudens Purple - This is the standout new tomato so far. Good production/fruit set of very large fruits. I had a miserable experience with Pink Brandywine last year and I think this is probably the answer to that. When I first tasted it I was just like, this is what I want a tomato to taste like. This is the tomato you want to put on a burger. Meaty, juicy, not much gel, good acid and I guess this is what people mean when they say "old fashioned" tomato flavor. I will grow this again and probably every year unless something tops it.
Now for the cherries
Riesentraube - extremely slow/late to produce and not prolific at all. I've so far harvested two tomatoes and they taste pretty good but not worth the pathetic performance unless it really gets going later in the season.
Blue Cream Berry - Not for me at all. No acid, just sweet, no tomato flavor. These reminded me of the green doctors tomatoes I grew last year and did not like either. I am learning that I really need acid in a tomato and dont like them to be so sweet. I'm not growing sungolds this year for that reason (too sweet, they do have some acid). Last year my savory dishes were borderline too sweet/more desert like because of the sweetness of the sungolds and the green doctors. Blue cream berry is in that same category like sweet and bland and not tomatoey. Also a slow grower, slow producer, generally unhealthy seeming plant, it must know that i don't like it!.
Sunset Torch/Red Torch - these are hybrids, first time growing. These are quite large for a small cluster tomato, they are kind of like romas but half the size. They are very pretty and the sunset torch taste really good. They have kind of a mild flavor but it is a tomato flavor and they remind me of the margold kind of, like floral and fruity. I guess that is the yellow tomato taste. The red torch I think I haven't had one ripe enough yet but their taste hasn't wowed me yet. Both of these plants are have great vigor, they are like 3X the size of my riesentraube and blue cream berry. They have great fruit set and will grow again just because of how prolific they are.
Edox - hybrid. Good fruit set, vigor and production. Blah taste. These are red cherries and they have to be really really really dark red and ripe to have much flavor at all and when they do its like the expensive cherries on the vine in the grocery store. Probably won't grow again, just meh.
Black cherry - slow going and not much fruit set but it seems to be getting a little better now, the fruits I had were really good and tasted like carbon/black krim/margaret curtain etc. Will grow again, maybe two plants if the production doesn't improve.
Supersweet 100 - grown before, this is probably the gold standard to me of a red cherry. Prolific, productive, good tomato flavor, sweet and acidic. Not much else to say. To me it isn't knock your socks off out of this world good but it is definitely worth growing.
Cherry Brandywine - Determinate. These are probably the best tasting cherries I have grown, Similar flavor to the prudens purple. They are prolific and I love that they are determinate and you can harvest a lot all at once. Short plants with great tasting tomatoes and they are early to produce. Last year I grew one and wish I grew more, growing two this year and maybe 3 next year!
I still have a bunch of tomatoes that I haven't gotten to try yet, mostly hybrids. Grand Marshall, Skyway, Brandy Boy, Big Beef, Granadero, can't think of them all. So far the vigor and fruit set are great but we will have to see about the taste!!
Time will tell. If anyone read all this... wow! Happy gardening :)

2024.05.16 15:13 kdichev Help with problematic lawn

Help with problematic lawn
Hi guys, I am creating this post to get tips on how to improve my lawn. First of all I'll give you some context.
We have a summer house in the Bulgarian southern seaside, the property is right behind a beach and was my grandparents business but now the younger generations (2nd,3rd) are getting the property as inheritance and we want to improve it. The climate is supposed to be Hot-summer Mediterranean. Spring to early summer with cool temperatures, the height of the season is about 30 degrees C (86 degrees Fahrenheit). Most of the yard is on sun, with a few trees putting shadow on some spots (in the middle we have a weeping widow, and above our garden kitchen).
Lawn is green during spring and it gets yellow by the peak of the summer and it's not quite pleasant as then all of the patches show even more.
The main issue I think that we have to firstly tackle is the soil which is extremely compacted and probably does not have the best qualities as we are behind the beach I guess the soil is quite saline, that's why probably the soil starts to crack or it opens some crevices.
Last year we were hit by a major flood and the yard was full of silt so that might have improved the soil a bit.
I am planning to aerate the soil this Autumn and planing starting from next year to aerate twice a year.
Is there anything else I need to consider to improve the soil?
After the soil is in better shape, we will start de-weeding on a regular basis and over-seeding but could I start sowing grass now? The property is commercial so during summer there are clients and there is quite a lot of traffic on the lawn as the clients prefer to "chill" in the yard most of the time. Would be nice if you guys have some seed recommendations for me.
As the yard is quite large it's 900 sq. meters irrigation is "in my opinion" quite hard to figure out for a few reasons like the size and shape of the property and that it's used by clients from almost 24/7. We have a creek passing our northern property border so water at least is no issue.
Could be nice also to get some tips on what kind of irrigation systems to consideresearch.
Thanks! And sorry for long post hehe
p.s I've attached some pictures, note that some could be potentially 10+ years old (the ones where the kitchen is not "white")

2024.05.16 15:11 sozthisnameistaken what main points disprove the global warming theory?

in my English class we have to choose a controversial topic and write an informative text about it, and be either for or against it. I know the basics of some flaws in global warming such as sea levels have always been rising, hot spot missing, temps have been higher etc, but if you were in my shoes what are some fatal flaws you would put into a short presentation? and I'm still on the fence about global warming so feel free to educate me as well :)

2024.05.16 15:00 stairsix I made the pedalboard builder I always wanted, with features like cable spacing, easy sharing, and power compatibility.

Hey all,
Over the years I’ve spent a ton of time (maybe too much) researching pedals and planning out different pedalboard configurations. I’ve used various of tools to do this in the past but I’ve always wanted them to do so much more.
That’s why I’ve been working on pedalboard.app. If you’re familiar with existing pedal planning tools, then you already know the basics of how it works. Here are some special aspects of pedalboard.app:
Pedalboard.app is a tool I built for the community, is 100% free, and an account is not needed to use it. I have so many more features that I plan on adding that I’m really excited about, but I wanted to share it with you now since it’s finally in a usable state. I hope it’s useful for you!
Are there any other features you’d like to see in an app like this? Let me know!
You can check it out here: https://pedalboard.app

2024.05.16 14:11 Penguin-Pete Example of a bot-written help wanted ad

Greetings! Since the subject came up recently about AI-written job posts, I twiddled by MS-Copilot and asked it to write a help-wanted ad for hiring a freelance writer.

###

It includes that last line in the output, so it might be fun to scan your FrankenSPAM for tell-tale filler text at the end like that.
What have we learned? AI-text is basically easy to spot, and is really not that different from the years of fill-in-the-blank templates and business mail that commerce has deployed for decades. It sounds canned and trite, because it's the "elevator music" of text.
I have seen a lot of work posts on UpWork just like this, and indeed on dozens of other job-board sites. I love the emphasis on "story-teller" and "narrative," which do ring true as the hot content-creator buzzwords of 2024.

2003 Toyota Tundra Please Anyone that can help
I have a 2003 Toyota tundra still going strong at almost 200k.
I recently bought a trailer to haul my tools and had to get an adaptor to plug to the factory cable but can't get the trailer brake lights to engage.
I looked inside the engines fuse box and saw that there is a spot for a (TOW TAIL RELAY the fuse diagram online named it R9) on my base model tundra the relay is just missing. I attached a photo of what the spot looks like where it should plug into. I can't for the life of me find this relay anywhere, no auto part store seems to know what i'm even talking about. I can't see a relay that would fit online on any website.

Please if there are any fellow Toyota tundra owners that have this truck. Can you please show me what the relay looks like please.

2024.05.16 13:42 baseball_mickey Any former guru followers here?

I need to have this conversation with my brother at some point.
March 2018, my brother just can't stop talking about Jordan Peterson. He brings up, "Can men and women work together?" My reaction
Yes, this is a trigger for me. My wife is a physician. She's had professors say she was wasting a spot in med school because she'd just quit. Who was the first person to quit her residency program? Yup, a dude...whose wife was a doctor!!!
So, maybe I was a bit hot, but I had to respond, "men and women have always worked together. HOSPITALS! The difference now is that women can hold positions over men." Thinking now, how are women more susceptible to harassment in positions of authority rather than subordinate positions?
The whole thing was just so stupid that I really didn't talk to my brother for a while. His being into JP & the Weinsteins was a huge wedge.
My question for former guru followers is 'what attracted you to them, and why did you consume their content or support them financially?'
Second question for the sub: should I even broach this with my bro, or should I leave it in the past and be happy that he's moved past listening to those gurus?

2024.05.16 13:34 biokemfem The dreaded t and LECA

So I have the dreaded t with a lot of plants in LECA. Have soaked the outer and inner pots in binbata detergent, hot water and rubbing alcohol to be sure and threw out the wicks.
Is the LECA recoverable if I boil it? I just spent most of last week soaking and rinsing it. I think I saw a larvae on one of the balls and the whole pot of those got tossed.
Plants were soaked in water for 24 hours, captain jacks coming today and the systemics tomorrow. I don’t want the scorched earth to be ruined by contaminated LECA but considering the time I spent soaking and making the LECA usable…
To add to see if I’m still doing everything possible and if there’s anything more I can do…
Any leaf with a brown and/or white spot or any kind of line went into trash. Some entire plants went into the trash. I had a garbage bag full of leaves yesterday and it was a little heartbreaking. Some of them were water props I’ve had for several months and were finally taking off…
On the upside, my bromeliads now look like cool roses.
Edit 2: since I’ve gotten question about what t is, it’s thr*ps.
