Changes I'd make for the Super Smash Bros. Playable Fighters part 1: Smash 64

2024.05.16 06:53 Aggressive-Jelly-180 Changes I'd make for the Super Smash Bros. Playable Fighters part 1: Smash 64

Welcome to the series of Changes to be Made to the Super Smash Bros. Playable Fighters. First, we are going with the playable fighters of the original game, Smash 64. Now this topic has been done before, though it'd to make my own version. Plus, while some did get some proper changes, the original 12 are still the biggest offenders when it comes to bad or outdated choices of Movesets, animations, aesthetics, etc. Here is a list of them.
Mario:
Donkey Kong:
Link:
Power Suit Samus:
Yoshi:
Kirby:
Fox:
Pikachu:
Luigi:
Ness:
Captain Falcon:
Jigglypuff:
And, there you go. This took a little while, though i hope to hear your feelings about these changes (as long as your reasons for your feelings are good). Any changes that you want to see to the original 12 that i didn't mention and did i misplace some moves? or did i add a change that was unnecessary? It'd be cool to see what other people can come up with.

2024.05.16 03:28 Bozbaby103 Cover Art

Relistening to PHM. Have seen the book’s cover art and passively wondered what it is trying to portray, but never gave it much effort. Now, I have finally added the Audible app to my TV and am looking at the cover art with more focus. When I’d look at it before I thought it kind of mirrored the movie Gravity or Mission To Mars. Now? I know it’s Grace, but what at the moment is he doing? It’s not like in The Martian when Beck tethered out to get Watney. Is this when Grace is Geronimo-ing to the Blip A? Or is it trying to depict how stressful, how perilous the mission is? Is that the Blip A in mustardy yellow xenonite? (I don’t think so as it has a highlight that is conducive to a curve.) Is it Tau Ceti? A random heavenly body? It’s not Adrian, Three World or Erid, soooo guesses?
Anyway, thought this would be a good place to ask for ideas, opinions and theories.

2024.05.15 23:51 lightscamerasnaction Delta in-flight movies [March 2024]

I tried to write down every single movie available on my flights in March 2024. I handwrote some of my notes to pass the 13 hours which is why there are ??? when I couldn't read my own writing/abbreviations. Note that not all titles were available on all flights, and my list is missing a chunk of them (especially titles beginning with "S" for some reason). Hope someone finds it useful! Maybe someone will get to creating a Letterboxd list of them all before me! [Posted this in movies and thought delta users might find it useful too]

2024.05.15 22:30 1cxmor Blackberry Curve 9920

I am looking into getting a half-dumb phone, and I was thinking about acquiring a Blackberry. I've read there's a lot you can not do anymore with them.
Do you know if this model in particular can do calls & SMS? Internet connection in the EU? WhatsApp even?

MANIA: GameStop and AMC
GameStop shares surged in Tuesday's premarket, continuing a meme stock rally sparked by Roaring Kitty's first online post in three years. GameStop's stock soared 150% after a 74% increase on Monday, while AMC jumped 110% following a $250 million equity raise.

MANIA: GameStop and AMC
Other meme stocks like BlackBerry and Koss also saw significant premarket gains. The rally was reignited by a post from Keith Gill, aka Roaring Kitty, which has attracted over 23 million views. Gill previously led a surge in GameStop's stock against hedge fund short positions in 2020 and 2021. Despite past highs and recent lows, GameStop's recent surge caused significant losses for short sellers, with estimated losses reaching over $2.3 billion in May, as reported by Ortex Technologies. The short interest in GameStop is at its highest since 2022, echoing the January 2021 trading frenzy.

I recently found an old blackberry curve 9330 and I was wondering what all I could do with it. I know I can’t do much due to BB shutting down, but is there anything at all that can be done with this thing? Any help is appreciated.

So ive just dug out my old 9900 (a product of recently watching the Blackberry movie and getting all sentimental) I have the Blackberry id popup happening, I think I hit the correct password but its not progressing. I know that the BBid server is no longer, does this mean I can not get into this phone any longer? I have Z10 Z30 9000 and curve that I can at least open with the bbid thing popping up. Any tips would be most welcome. Would love it to be a weekender for calls and txt but also would love to read old txt threads. TIA

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
I primarily use my PC for:
I'll usually have my web browser and a Discord call in the background.
I stream either games or art 5-7 days/week. An average stream is about 4-6 hours, but it can go up to 12 hours per session for several weeks. Otherwise I work on art commissions and editing.
Currently, FFXIV sits comfortably around 144 FPS on low settings, and most games run fine at 60+ FPS on medium. So I'd like to keep it about the same, if not better. I have no interest in running games at high/maximum settings, but if the PC can do that, then cool 👍
2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
$2500. I don't mind going over if the price is right, but no more than $3000 please.
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Within the next 1-2 weeks.
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: toweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower & OS.
5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
Not at all.
7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-towefull-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
No preference, as long as cable management is happy. White would be cool, but whatever is fine. I'll probably put the tower either under my standing desk (>26") or beside it, so no preference on height.
9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.
Yes. 64-bit
10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
If the computer can last at least 6 years without upgrading, that would be solid. Ideally I'd just swap parts, but if the build works, I'll probably gift and/or build another one for my family in the future.
11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)
I stream on Twitch with OBS, so I'd like to try NVIDIA if possible. But honestly, if it performs well, I'll take it.
12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.
(2021) Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6A: AMD Ryzen 5 5600H, AMD Radeon RX 6600M 8GB, 512GB SSD
13. Extra info or particulars:
I'll be giving my current laptop to my dad! I'm mostly happy with it, but I want to upgrade to a PC after using laptops for over a decade lol.
One issue I have currently: Regardless if I stream online or record offline, sometimes the audio is distorted for a few seconds (however, there are no issues with hearing my microphone nor frame dropping). I've never encountered this issue with my older PC (~2015) or when I was using my previous mic (now broken).
I suspect my issues stem from a combination of stream bitrate, too many active USB ports/externals, microphone, or just plain user error. I don't think the issue is related to AMD or sound bitrate necessarily, since the laptop had no issues with streaming in the first few years. But honestly, I don't know, my friends don't know either, and I'm too afraid to change anything more lmao.
I have plans to replace my keyboard, don't worry 🥲 I've gotten many recommendations lmao.
I have no experience with building PCs or comparing parts, so I'd appreciate any advice! One of my friends offered to help build the PC, and I'll be looking up guides too 👍

2024.05.13 00:07 Affectionate-Ad8829 Won’t wear brace

Hi all, I had a 60 degree curve and have been through 2 tethering surgeries. I’m currently at a 20 degree curve, with a brace. I’m 6‘1 and estimated to grow to 6‘8 within the next 5 years. This means that I’ll have this brace for 5 years and I hate it. Getting into it makes me claustrophobic and panicky and I can’t sleep with it either. Id rather have another surgery than wear this. I have a brace appointment in a couple of days, presumably where they will check how often I wear it. Can anyone help! Thanks

2024.05.12 13:55 ProfessorFunky Idiot proof GLinet router for travel

Context: I’ve had a Beryl (the first one) router for a few years now. It’s great to tinker with, and when it works well it works really well. But I find it’s pretty flaky. Getting through hotel landing pages is a pain in the backside and unreliable (even using the neverSSL workaround). Keeping a stable connection to my iPhone (to share a data connection) using a wire tether is hit and miss, and drops a lot. Those sticky up antenna are a hassle when I’m trying to use it in the car. So I’ve found that I’m defaulting to using my iPhone as a hotspot and router for any devices me or my family, and the Beryl is getting dusty. I find life is too short for this level of messing around and tinkering.
Question: Is there a GLinet router that is really setup-and-forget? One that will easily handle hotel landing pages? One that will easily maintain a wired connection to an iPhone? One that is small enough to use for travel and in the car and doesn’t have pokey-out bits that I’ll worry might get snapped off? I have UnifFi stuff for my home network, and it took a while to tweak it to where I wanted it, but now I just leave it alone and it is solid - so I don’t mind a learning curve and some tweaking to get it right, but I only want to do that once. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, and tried and tested (I’ll happily trade speed for robustness and ease of use) is preferred over new and shiny.

2024.05.11 20:45 mage_in_training My reddit serial, Knowings ch. 08

This chapter took a long time to get out. Life has me super busy. Two jobs, married, two kids, still sober. I like how this turned out, however, someone new stole the show this time. As always, leave feedback, I appreciate it so very much.
[FIRST] [DELETED SCENES] [PREVIOUS]
~ ~ ~
As I reentered my true body without recieving a mending, the vicious wounds I endured manifested into being as I reactualized into my true Self. Through the pain, I couldn't help but think on Raver's words to me.
"The doors have to be closed."
~ ~ ~
Without recieving a mending in Raver's Dreamtime bubble, reactualization was a fucking bitch. I Perceived my Self as having quite the damaged form, my Soul was fucked over by bombardment from dreadlight and my physical body simply disagreed with it all, stating that I was mostly whole and intact, only being damaged by wounds I had already endured. The three parts had an argument of a sort amongst themselves and with the power of the Dreamtime, reached a tortuous compromise.
I'm certain I seizured and blacked out through the process.
I awoke with my body shaking and covered in a cold sweat, Tsula and Luna above me, chanting in the secret language of their esoteric Traditions. The two of them each held diffetent tools required for their cultural and subtle manipulation of reality. Soft hands, awash with mana and glowing tattoos, were placed on my chest, right where my heart was. Cold, icy fingers cradled my soul protectively, keeping it connected to my body in the here and now as harsh, physical laws rent my form.
I was paying the price for Raver's hubris, and I had almost overdrafted. Thoughts of mortal over reach faded from my mind as I slipped into cool and soothing darkness.
Cold and bloodied fingers were pressed against my chest and did little to assuage the burning ache that was my soul. I couldn't focus on anything else as I gazed at the hollowed out body of my beloved. She had been beautiful, gorgeous even, and due to give birth to our daughter in two weeks. Now, the... dead thing in front of me could barely be defined as a corpse. Her skin had been peeled away like a banana and her insides removed, leaving a bloodied, hollow space. The flesh and bones had been scooped away like ice cream, leaving little in the way of remains. Our unborn child had been pulled out and repurposed with the stolen parts of her mother by dreadlight and a mage's fell Will to form the body of a Thing.
With silent tears streaming down my face, I placed the ring I had proposed to her with and put it onto my finger, next to my plain tungsten one. The simple act of removing it almost caused what remained of her hand to simply fall apart in my fingers. I'm not sure how long I stayed like that. I couldn't even hold her body against mine for fear of it crumbling away into a vile mess. I ignored what was going on around me as I kneeled in the spent summoning circle.
The world around me split and rent itself into distorted imagery, as though I were looking at everything from under a pool with gentle waves. Some parts were compressed together and others were stretched out, not quite like a mirror maze as the world was still simply one cohesive image. Additionally, things seemed closer or further in ways that defied conventional Euclidean geometries. The only area not affected by this blatant disregard of spatial dimensions, had been myself and a scant few feet around me.
What...?
A heavy thud broke me out of my thoughts and I saw my Father landing next to me. Since both of us had been prepared, he was wearing, much like myself, full motorcycle safety gear. It had been enchanted and bolstered by hidden runes and severed Will, turning everything into protective objects that even defended against potent and offensive mysticism. The equipment in question had been chosen for its sheer mundanity and ease of access, letting the powerful enchancements skirt around the Lie and Consensus leaving the magic fully intact and potent.
"Alistair," I heard my Father say to me with grim calm as he twisted the space in front of us into a right angle, redirecting rapid gunfire, "I can't do this alone."
I remained silent.
"Damnit, Son," he growled out then literally kicked my ass with his heavy boot, almost knocking me over onto my side, "get a hold of yourself, Its here now. You handle the mages."
That got me going. I finally got up, my grief was as a lead weight and prevented me from doing what was needed. With a last look at C'Leena's hollowed out corpse, I grit my teeth, steeled my nerves and called forth my magic from the Aether.
Was I dreaming? No, worse, I was in a memory...
"Stay out of my way and watch yourself," Father said to me, "I can't pull my punches against that."
"Gotcha," I replied almost absently and turned to face the assembled shadow mages. They had inexplicably stopped theit gunfire to admire the Thing they brought into existence from Somewhere.
I couldn't help but stare, either.
Standing on top of the northernmost anchor stone, an ugly, multi-faceted block of copper with glyphs and sigils harshly hewn into it, was a naked woman. The glyphs themselves were hard to look at, as though their mere presence were an affront to reality itself, which they were. The woman's skin was a darkened olive tone and she was tall as well as athletic, lithe and fit. Her shoulder length black hair was bushy and curly, flowing about her head almost like an afro. As she ran her hands down her body, I could not help but notice that everything was oddly symmetrical and too perfect. It was unnerving me greatly and triggered an uncanny valley response that tore at my heart.
The body this Thing was wearing had belonged to my fiancée.
Father didn't let It have time to get acclimated. Sidestepping forwards, he drew upon the full capabilities of his Path, eyes backlit by stars, an impossible physical sword of abstract spatial geometries held in his left hand, and a reality defying, super-dense distortion held in his right.
The world contorted and screamed under his might.
I awoke with a start and a low groan, glad to be awake and free of that horrid nightmare again. Not for the first time, I wished I had that motorcycle gear still. I had been far too reckless then and immediately thereafter, and everything had been damaged beyond repair. I could never find anyone I trusted enough to make those enchantments anyways. Farnsworth could only enhance the mundane qualities as he didn't know enough about mana warding to permanently imbue the protections I wanted nor needed for my line of active field work.
Looking around, I saw Rue asleep on the other side of the bed and Spades was nestled between us, his massive form making a visible dip in the mattress. The big monster dog was on his back, legs splayed open and snoring loudly with his tongue hanging out of his muzzle. I was reminded a lot of my Lola when she had still been around in the flesh, making me smile with old and pleasant memories. I must have been out for some time for Spades to be here.
A quick, almost reflexive, mental orison told me everything I already suspected. My mana reserves were shot, my body had been through the ringer and my soul was frayed and burnt. While I knew I owed my continued existence to Raver and her godsend, I also knew it had taken a great and terrible toll on my Self. Miracles like that usually held some kind of hidden cost, even if they weren't readily apparent.
Getting off the bed slowly, I began to look for my pack. It took far longer than than usual as I had to steady myself quite a bit from the spinning room. I managed to be quiet, however, and didn't wake up Rue nor Spades. Finally in the shower, after some time and using the wall to support myself, I let the almost scalding water roll over my aching body. The pendant on my neck protecting me from recieving any burns or aggravating the injuries I had, both old and new.
With the hot water soothing aching muscles, I began to think and take stock of my situation. I had never been on the back foot like this, low on any kind of resource, having few allies, and being pressed for time. It was like something out of a bad novel or shitty indie Steam(R) game. Though, real life was often stranger than fiction and had no real need for a logical cause and effect dynamic. If this was going to become the norm, then I had to find another method of approaching my wendigo problem.
I was simply running out of time.
After some long moments of thinking, I began to wash my hair, using the guest products on the corner caddy. They were so much nicer than anything I would have willingly bought and made me seriously consider changing up my usual shampoo. The only idea I could come up with regarding those wendigos, besides an overwhelming frontal assault, was to appeal to their bottomless gluttony and barter for passage.
I resigned myself to actually try to negotiate with their clan leader, leveraging their horrid taboos against them to get what I needed.
Wendigos, unlike most strange cryptids, vampires and were-folk aside, had a lot of things known about them, especially how they powered their supernatural capabilities. It was a simple and rather straightforward process, the more heinous the act, the more mana they drew from it. Cannibalism, sacrilege, incest, murder, torture, hedonistic gluttony, or any number of other terrible and minor sins. As well as general lawbreaking and felonies, oftentimes combined to have as many as possible occur in the same sitting.
I audibly gasped with a sudden epiphany.
My fate had already been decided, by myself no less. In a bar I couldn't remember the name of, when I had been gazing into my bronze coin, I saw what I needed to do. I had to gift what measly scrap of knowledge I understood from Beyond the Infinite to those creatures. To let those wendigos defile and mutilate such sacred and pure knowledge to whatever whims their baleful minds could come up with.
"Fuck," was the only thing I could whisper at the thought of it all as I turned off the water, getting out of the shower. I cooled the bathroom down with but a thought and wiped away the condensation on the mirror with a towel that wasn't my own, finally getting a good look at myself without vertigo, as that had finally passed.
I looked like shit, and that was a compliment. Huge, fist shaped bruises of black, green and yellow littered my torso, though most were located on my left side and blurred together into an ugly shapeless mass. The ones on my right, however, were well defined and I could easily count the number of strikes. My face held a swollen black eye, I never noticed my diminished field of vision as I had gotten used to having them over the years. Turning gingerly and opening the mirror a bit so I could see my back, I grimaced. It was another spiderweb of a bruise, earned from when I had been smashed against the edge of Raver's Dreamtime bubble.
At least none of my fingers were broken, only very stiff and swollen, just like the rest of me. I probably couldn't drive for another day or so, either, not with my hands the way they were. As I looked, surprised I hadn't noticed earlier, the inside of my right hand was, branded. The skin, while fully healed, held the symbolic glyph that heralded the Path of Stars. A circle with nine curved lines inside it. Each line only intersected two others, but with the irregular placement of them, I could trace an intersection to any other one. In each of the open spaces, slightly off center, as a simple dot.
"Miracles leave their marks," I muttered to myself, almost disbelieving the literalness of the phrase.
I didn't bother drying off and struggled a bit getting into the clothes I brought with me, maroon athletic shorts and a black tank top. Exiting the guest bathroom, I thought about where I wanted to go. Settling on a destination, I went into the backyard, found a patch of grass in the shaded, morning sunlight and lay down. The grass was thick and rather soft, and the smell of the lemon tree and the garden was more pleasant and fragrant than they should have been.
Warding myself against dreaming, I pulled on the principles of the Aether, specifically, those of sun and storms. Since the Aether was a realm of energy and mana in all of its varying forms, I employed an advanced technique, a mysterion. It was something only able to be done by those that actually hailed from the Aether rather than having mastery over it. Pulling some of the sunlight and ambient warmth into my form, I converted measly scraps of energy directly into mana. The process was slow, and almost hardly worth the effort. It was like filling a bathtub with water, a single milliliter at a time.
Mana was now such a rare commodity, every miniscule drop of it mattered.
I settled in and entered a trance-like state, most of my attention devoted to my mysterion, though some of it was allowed to drift off elsewhere. While not exactly a dream, and while maintaining my mana draw, my mind conjured up nonsensical imagery and conversations between myself and others. I didn't pay them any attention as my thoughts wandered and drifted idly.
"I thought I'd find you out here," Rue said as I heard her sit down next to me. I didn't hear her walking, however, she continued to speak, "you've been asleep for a few days. What happened?"
"Got fucked," I replied easily, a little sarcastically as well. "Truthfully," I amended, "I got summoned by Raver. She pulled a shenanigan with Fate to let her have a waking dream."
"So she was hallucinating?" Rue stated, though it was more of a question.
"Damned straight," I confirmed, "she had Sasquatch and Farnsworth make something for her. It had to have been lethal, something like that. Anyways, we were talking and then one of Them showed up. Inside the Dreamtime bubble of hers. Found Raver's luminescence despite Mirzam hiding it."
"Shit. So It was physically there? That means It had a stolen body..." Rue said, trailing off.
"Yeah, it had a body alright," I almost growled out, "broke Raver's ritual with little effort. I spent everything I had to make a patch job just to keep it active, burned through all my mana, too. I did not want to be dispersed."
"I see," Rue said to me with understanding, "I wouldn't want to have to find my physical body without a tether either." There was a small pause before she spoke again, "So what happened next?"
"I made it mad with insults to buy time for the repaired shenanigan to stabilize Raver."
"What do you mean?" Rue asked as I heard her stretch out a bit, my eyes still closed.
"Her shenanigan was woven in such a way that whatever drug Sasquatch and Farnsworth made for her didn't just kill her," I answered with a pause then continued, "it let her do things beyond normality, anyways, my fucked up patch job let me tell Sasquatch that Raver had to stay dreaming."
"So he wouldn't just purge the elixir out of her," Rue stated, then added perhaps a tad bit defensively, "I know some things from other paths, not much, but some."
"That's good," I answered back, "knowledge is power."
"With us, it's quite literal."
I murmured in assent.
"So why did you make It mad?" Rue asked, "wouldn't It just draw strength from human emotions, especially in the Dreamtime?"
"It did," I answered back, "but It couldn't act properly on them, like human emotions were new and novel. The whole encounter was sloppy after a certain point, but I did almost die. Raver saved me, gave me a miracle."
"I saw," Rue said simply, "the mark on your hand was a giveaway."
I could only murmur in agreement again then asked, "Did you find a card in my hands, too?"
"I did," Rue replied after a few moments of silence, "it was debit card, with a note attached to it."
"From Procyon, right?"
It took a few moments for her to answer. "Yes, it was from Procyon," she took a breath and continued with wavering effort, "that damned bastard had it all planned out. Wrote a fucked up letter to me on a Google(TM) doc telling me not to worry and that this had always been his exit plan."
"Sounds like he knew what was going to happen," was all I could say.
"Yes, but, I miss him!" Rue all but snarled at me, then, in a small and quiet voice, whispered, "He was my best friend, and maybe we could've been more, y'know? Now... there's... There's just nothing, only memories of him left to mourn."
"I didn't know," I answered simply.
Rue spoke with a wavering breath before continuing, her thoughts more than a little disjointed, "a lot of what he wrote was personal, so I won't get into that, but he was certain that something catastrophic was going to happen to him and myself. So he made sure that I was at my secondary home, recovering from a job. I had just completed a mission from Raver and Mirzam, and was going to perform a ritual to patch up Spades after I got some sleep. Procyon also stated that someone has been altering things for a very long time."
"So that's why you were caught with yout pants down," I said, "you didn't even have time to recover." I paused, adjusting my mysterion as I had to refocus due to our conversation, "what did they have you do?"
"Some hedge wizards actually got a hold of an actual necromancy grimoire and charged mana tools in a graveyard," Rue said with a bit of a tired sigh, "they knew exactly what they were doing, and would have been rather powerful shadow mages if they had been capable of using starlight."
"Fuck," was all I could say, then formed an actual response after a few moments, "that shouldn't have been an issue for you. Hedges don't have our capability, though numbers may have evened out their odds."
"You're right, but they brought a spirit back before I could stop them," Rue answered with more than a little spite, "a real nasty piece of shit, too. Turned on the hedges, absorbed them, and put up a real mean fight against Spades and I. It was touch and go for a long time and I was actually fearful for my life, too."
"You won, though."
"Yeah, managed to send it kicking and screaming back to the Pit, exhausted most of my mana to do so. Fucking bastard."
There was a small silence between us as Rue became lost in her own thoughts. It was a while before I asked her, "Can you elaborate on what Procyon said about Fate being altered?"
"I can, actually, though it's a bit difficult since I'm not even a novice with the Path of Stars," Rue answered as I heard her shift a bit on the grass next to me. She paused as she seemingly collected her thoughts, "it's just that certain events were made to happen sooner or later. The big one, for our Node at least, was that you were always supposed to make your ancestral home translocate. It happened sooner than it should have."
"Fuck," I said, "So I wasn't supposed to send it away a few days ago?"
"No, that was supposed to happen after our wendigo thing, if the letter is to be believed."
"Fuck," was all I could say, "I do suppose that was a snap decision, I really didn't want Them to get a hold of anything inside. If I had been able to wait, or even had help, I'm sure I wouldn't have lost it to time and space."
"Exactly," Rue said with bitter excitement, "and we'd have access to everything in it. Losing your home was a big blow to our Node."
"Yeah, but at least They don't have it," I answered more spitefully than intended.
"Silver linings and all that, right?"
"Yeah, gotta look at the bright side, no matter how bleak," I answered back with a bit of sarcastic mirth, then said as I stretched a bit, readjusting my focus on my mysterion as well, "speaking of wendigos, I know what we need to do to solve that."
"Oh? Do tell, I couldn't come up with anything myself, kept running into dead ends," she said, then added, "lack of resources and help."
"Well, I don't think you're going to like it, I'm not sure I like it either."
"Don't keep me waiting," Rue said to me with a bit of sarcastic exasperation. I could sense her looking at me even though my eyes were still closed.
"I'm going to leverage their taboos against them, appeal to their insatiable greed and offer them what little I can understand of That Which Lies Beyond the Infinite." I sighed and added, "after all, how could they resist the allure of new magic?"
"You're right," she answered, "I definitely don't like it. I'm pretty sure it's not even wise to do so."
"Wise or not, it's the only way forward, I even saw it in a vision when I was manipulating fate magic."
"Have you talked to Mirzam or Raver about this vision of yours?"
"No, not yet, and I'm pretty sure I don't need to."
There was a bit of silence between us as she digested my words. I felt compelled to elaborate as I adjusted my mysterion again, losing a bit of my focus due to the depth of the conversation we were having.
"Acrux," I said, getting her attention fully by using the name of her star, "there's something you need to understand." I sat up, abandoning my mysterion in favor of giving her my full attention. Blinking a bit at the rise of light and warmth, I continued my thought process, "in the Dreamtime, the Thing I was fighting against, It was surprised and enraged that I was able to call upon knowledge that Lay Beyond the Infinite. Whatever those glyphs and powers are, They never wanted humans to know of them, let alone have them."
"Yet you want to give such power to wendigos of all things."
"At least the knowledge, corrupted or not, will still be on Earth," I said then added, "I'm not sure what you remember, but I know you've seen something from Beyond the Infinite. Your self revival and Spade's new form are proof of that. I was there, guided by Oracle. I Perceived something unknowable, something terrible, something no mortal has any right to gaze upon. Something I can hardly even begin to try to put into words. Raver Perceived it, too. It's how she managed to give me a godsend. So, what did you Perceive, really?"
Rue brought her knees up to her chest, thinking deeply. I could tell she was using her Perception to look inwards upon her Self. I waited patiently while she struggled to look at her soul's reflection against her mind and struggled even more to put the image there into words.
At long last, she spoke, her eyes still closed as she did so, "I'm not sure what I saw, there was too much, and I felt so small. Insignificant. Less than even a dismissed, intrusive thought. There is one thing I do remember. A doorway made of the might from two universes worth of truths and laws. A Thing was trying ro break through, but couldn't, not fully, yet the doors were opened, letting smaller ones through."
"The Doors have to be closed," I said, quoting Raver, before continuing, "that's what Raver said to me, before she sent me back to my body."
"Why didn't they mend you then?"
"They were being attacked in the waking world, too. It was a good plan on Their part, They just didn't expect us to put up so much of a fight."
"They never do, though I think that's changing."
"So that's our endgame, not sure how we're going to do it," I said, bringing the conversation back to topic, "at the moment, however, I'm going to eat a few of those mana-stuffed protein bars and fix your leg. I can't keep spending mana to be able to drive your truck. You'll have to use your own mysterion to get mana, too."
"I hate my Path's mysterions," the venom in her voice was palpable.
Before I could say anything, the backdoor opened, revealing Luna. She was wearing a bird-patterned sundress and her hair had been tied back into a loose ponytail. She put her hand over her eyes to shade them from the sun as she squinted against the brightness relative to that from inside.
"Hey, you two," she called out, "Grandmother says she needs to talk yo you."
"Alright," I called out, shakily getting up to my feet with a bit of a grunt. Everything still hurt. Rue had a bit of trouble as well, her leg was not recieving the rest and healing it deserved and needed.
"We're a mess, aren't we?" Rue asked aloud as we began to walk towards the bak door.
"Yeah, but you should see the other guys," I replied with a light chuckle, only to wince and hold my sides, "I forgot how much laughing hurts with fractured ribs."
"I really don't envy you right now," Rue said with a bit of a smirk as we entered Tsula's home, Rue entering first. "I wonder what Tsula wants to talk to us about?" Rue asked aloud, not really talking to anyone in particular.
I could only wonder as we followed Luna to the living room, the house pleasantly cool due to central air conditioning.
~ ~ ~
The moon was not in the sky, and I greatly enjoyed not having to endure the accursed, purifying light of day reflected by its surface, even if greatly diminished. The loathsome wound in my side had been a mortal blow, burning through my toughened flesh and form with unnerving ease and stunning, blinding pain. Once more, I looked at the oily, thin, and black ichor that dripped from my fingers, more human-like than I was comfortable with.
The mote of dreadlight I had recieved for my services had been the only thing that had kept me from vanishing entirely. Mortal alchemy -- science -- had advanced to such a degree so as to emulate the harsh light of day far too remarkably well. That hadn't been the worst part, that damned thaumaturgist had ensorcelled a curse upon the weapon as well. With effort, as the bulk of my power was directed at repairing the oozing wound, I altered my form and shape, struggling to maintain the illusion as I walked out onto the sidewalk from a side alley.
My contract was not yet completed.
The first two nights I had hidden myself away in the dark depths, raging against the oblivion that threatened to overtake me and ending my existence. The preparedness of the thaumaturgist had been unexpected, as well as the skill and the knowledge he had wielded so effortlessly. Without my guidance, nor presence, to instill fear into the gifted abetters, the wraiths I had gathered with me fell and fled into the night, abandoning their duties and contracts.
I would have never made this mistake against the herald of the bear.
Had I known the name of the mortal's star I had been tasked against, I would have demanded more than a simple mote of dreadlight and a paltry handful of coerced allies. Realistically, I should be grateful that I still had a kind of semi-existence. Quelling my anger and hatred, and swallowing my utter revulsion, my form rippled and took the guise of a tall, middle-aged human male in a common and unremarkable suit carrying an old and worn briefcase.
The artificial illumination around me flickered, emitting a grating hum in my presence and the thin television flickered oddly as it tried to display my image, failing to accurately do so. While tracking Arcturus's quintessence had been a bit of a task, as far too much time had passed, my familiarity with it granted me an advantage that overcame that difficulty. Traveling in my wounded state, however, had been much more arduous. Looking the woman at the reception desk over, I took on my role with hiden revulsion, aided by the illusion I was conjuring and the mimicry of my physical form.
"I'm detective Aiden Roth, and I'm looking for someone. I believe that he was here a few nights ago, definitely this past week," I said. My false, human voice had been made to sound smooth, suave and strong, interlaced with a suggestion, using what little forte I could spare. I put the worn and well-used briefcase I had conjured with me onto the counter with a heavy thud, using more of my forte to emulate such a simple thing. Opening it up, I fished out an image and showed the slightly grainy, black and white picture to the receptionist.
As the woman perused the conjured image, I could not help but hiss, my hand going to my side as I expended more of my forte than I had anticipated. The cursed wound fighting back fiercely against the dreadlight tethering my existence and life. I held my disguise with willpower of monumental proportions. A strength of will I rarely had been pressed to draw from.
Seeing the concerned look the woman gave me, I simply stated, shrugging off the pain with yet more expenditure of will, "An old injury, it flares up from time to time. No matter, have you seen this individual?"
"I'm going to need to see some kind of badge or warrant," the woman said with a genuine smile, "sorry."
The fear of losing her menial job overpowered my subtle suggestion. Unfortunate.
"Sure," I replied with a fake and well ptacticed, fetching smile, adjusting my forte to include another suggestion. I showed an actual badge with my assumed name and likeness. The mortal I was impersonating had been slain many years ago by my own hands, and the subtle illusion taking hardly any of my forte adjusted the dates and design of the badge to whatever was current.
Only a thaumaturgist, or a very particularly skilled sorcerer, could pierce the illusion. Against this mortal, there was no chance of resistance and she accepted the stolen badge without question.
She looked it over, as if trying to divine the legitimacy of it. "Okay," she finally admitted, "he was here a while ago, maybe a four or five days? I remember, 'cause I tried to flirt with him..."
I ignored her prattling and asked when she finished speaking, "Can you show me the room he used?"
"Sure, but it's been cleaned a few times since then."
With a nod, I let her lead the way to the room in question, staying silent. The lights around me flickered and hummed loudly in my presence. Had the woman been more observant, she could have seen my true shadow as I had not the forte to expend to hide it entirely from the ever changing lights. She opened the room in question, using what I could only assume was a master key card.
I immediately recognized the faded auras of quintessence.
"This will do," I stated, closing the door behind me and dropping my revolting disguise, using my forte to lock it.
I revealed my true form. My legs and arms lengthened and thinned, the black suit and red tie I was wearing became my skin, armor and form. My face and eyes became blank, gaunt and sunken, skin stretching out over it. The wound in my side made itself visible, it was an ugly red, peeling and oozing burn from my shoulder to my waist and took up most of my torso. The dreadlight I was using to prevent my oblivion illuminated the wound with a kind of sickly, crimson colored backlight. Black ichor oozed out from it and dripped onto the floor as I used the bulk of my forte to ablate the caustic, foreign quintessence from my form.
The woman looked at me as even her pitifully dull, mundane human senses told her that there was incredible danger in the room with her. She screeched and irrationally ran towards the bathroom as my presence became impossibly tall in the very finite space in the motel room. Using the smallest iota of my forte, I remotely smashed her fleeing form against a wall, pinning her there with unseen force as she begged, and sobbed for her pitiful life.
I ignored her for the moment.
Drawing upon more of my forte, freed up as I no longer needed a disguise, I sensed out where quintessence had been used, discovering two places, the bed and a wall. Imbuing the wall with my own forte, I witnessed a spectral, moving image of Arcturus throwing five darts at a map placed on the wall, one at a time, then draw intersecting lines to a single point on the map.
"Wendigos..." I hissed out in loathing, the skin on my face stretching and contorting with the movement as i spoke aloud with a nonexistent mouth. Even I knew their territory.
Turning to the second source of quintessence, I did the same thing. I saw Arcturus ward himself against dreaming and then hold a brilliant shield in the air, as well as a ball of fire. My knowledge of actual thaumaturgy told me that I would have great difficulties against those Knowings. I put the mystery of his Dreamtime excursion out of my mind for now, there was nothing I could do regarding that.
My expenditure of forte caused my horrid wound to pulse against my form painfully. With a hiss, I turned to the woman meekly begging me to spare her life as she was still pinned against the wall. I could use a thrall, especially as I could no longer gain allies, not without offering something in return to my current contract holders.
That was not a barter I wanted to engage in.
"Please... don't kill me... please... I'll do anything... please..."
The absolute terror in her eyes was delectable. Her fear invigorated me with energy and reminded me I needed to feed. However, the morsels offered by her would be more than sufficient for my needs. I dragged my left hand across my oozing wound, covering it in my own essence then flexed my forte. The clothes she was wearing split in half down the middle, revealing her naked form, making her shriek. I could see the ideas her panicked mind vomited forth as she renewed her struggles with vigor.
What I had in mind was so much worse than the mundane taking of her physical body she expected.
Using the full might of my forte, I lengthened and sharpened my index finger, the tip dripping with the gathered ichor of my essence. In an instant, less than the blink of an eye, I appeared in front of her from where I had been by the bed and plunged the very tip of my sharpened, needle-like nail into the center of her heart, cutting through the most sensitive parts of her breast to do so due to the angle I had chosen for just this purpose. As I let my ichor suffuse her body with each beat of her racing heart, her vascular system visibly turning black under her skin as she screamed and writhed in agony, an odd thing happened.
What could only be considered my blood had been tainted by thaumaturgy qnr bolstered by dreadlight as well as my own forte. As it mixed with the blank canvas of the mortal in front of me, I could sense the candle of her soul. Reaching out with dreadlight, letting the wound burn my side with a hiss of inhaled breath, I ignited it with three kinds of mysticism.
A horrified realization overcame her as she knew I had fundamentally altered her to suit my whims. Having a thaumaturgist thrall would be a great boon.
"You'll do quite nicely," I said with an actual grin, the skin stretched over my mouth revealing impossibly large, gleaming flat teeth, as I watched the physical and mystical changes taking place.
My new thrall would never be human again.
I feasted on her terror, anguish and torment.
It was delicious.

2024.05.11 16:57 mage_in_training Knowings (Ch. 08)

My bare-bones-ish Discord.

2024.05.10 19:04 Holiday-Astronaut-60 ENT said my "relatively large tongue base" is the cause of my OSA- is this bs?

I was diagnosed with mild obstructive sleep apnea and having been struggling to adapt to CPAP therapy, which I understand has a steep learning curve.
My sleep doctor is a pulmonologist and had nothing to offer about the underlying causes because while I should lose the remaining 10 lbs, I'm by no means fat so I went to an ENT to get more information.
He scoped my nose and throat and declared that I have a "relatively large base of the tongue" - relative to the rest of my airway. He was unable to offer a way to improve things as he feels tongue reduction surgery is too difficult, painful, and invasive.
I'm a lactation consultant familiar with the impact of tethered oral tissue but by no means an expert, so I shared this information with colleagues. Their main reaction was that it was a bs explanation and that I should pursue a second opinion and maxillofacial therapy. I was able to find a number of tongue exercises on youtube so I guess I'll try that first.
If a large tongue base is my issue, what else can I do that might help me avoid CPAPing for the rest of my life?

2024.05.10 14:37 Wolven91 Breelu & Moisés - Birthday Surprise

Despite the steep incline, Moisés found that he was barely out of breath, yet he still had a mildly concerning light headedness about him. He hadn't been able to shake the faint vertigo all morning, but he'd honestly expected to feel worse from the hiking. Moisés took a moment to rest, although found that he still didn't need to 'catch his breath'.
Breelu was waiting for him up ahead, his magnificent blue and white feathers with the black highlights always captivated the human, he was surrounded by shin high flowers, that parked the edge of the winding path up the mountain. The flowers were upside down, the petals protecting the plant.
Having already asked when they had first started their journey, Breelu had explained that the flowers open at night and tiny insects that light up make it a sight to be seen. The young man had made a mental note to come back here before they left the avian home planet and went home.
"Nearly there." Breelu offered, as Moisés trudged the few steps that separated the two.
"So, is this not, like a popular place?" Asked the human as he gazed across the gigantic forest treetops.
The avian home world capital was as alien as any city had come before. The avian home was covered in a genus of trees that put red woods to shame. Their whole city was built within the bows of these colossal natural towers. The air was warm and clean with only areas of necessity demanding that they clear the forest for landing pads and energy plants.
Moisés had joked that he'd never guessed that Breelu was an 'elf'. The joke missed unfortunately as the translation came across as 'fae' which, thanks to the draconians, translated as slang for humans.
"Of course this is popular. This is one of the most famous pillars in the area." Breelu retorted as he looped a scaled arm around Moisés's shoulders where a taloned hand slipped beneath the human's arm and held him to the avian's fluffy hip.
"How come we haven't seen anyone then? We've been walking for a good hour, and no one's passed us, either up or down."
Breelu's laugh echoed off the rocky wall and into the tree line that was abuzz with its own life. A large blue, white, and black wing buffeted Moisés causing dirt and wind to pick up ever so slightly. The human flinched and briefly raised an arm to defend his face, but the wing merely hovered there.
Until the penny dropped.
"They fly up don't they?" The young man asked, rather sheepishly. He had often fallen into the trap of thinking Breelu was a human, just a taller, feathery human. But that wasn't the case. Breelu's claws and sharp beak were an evolution as a dedicated hunter of the sky. All avians thought with the concept of a 3D space. They were not tethered to the ground by something as mundane as gravity.
"At least you're pretty." The large avian chuckled, jovially jabbing Moisés's bruised ego.
"What else do I-" But the human's words were lost as they finally made it to the top of the spire of rock. The spiralling path had finally deposited them high up into the sky were the trees that grew in the lower areas fell away. A threatening gust assaulted the pair, but Breelu weathered it stoically while his arm and wing caged the human in place. Moisés didn't falter with Breelu's firm hand supporting him.
The human was awed by his uninterrupted view the world.
There was no other word than 'awe' to describe the unending sea of trees that covered the planet from pole to pole. To his east, was the Haratooa Mountains, the wood pillars there were thin and whistled as the winds blew through them apparently, whereas to the south was the great forest sea, not a 'sea' in the sense of open water, but the forest there grew in a continent sized basin. The deeper one walked, the closer the trees grew and the darker the world became, until one made their way into the subterranean world of the aracnae.
The avains ruled the skies, whereas the aracnae ruled the ground and all that was below it. Whilst the avian home world was large, it was hollow; two species called this world home and shared it as such.
"This is amazing." Moisés whispered.
"Happy birthday Moisés." Whispered Breelu back, squeezing him into his hip once more while the human hugged him back, rubbing his cheek into the silky soft feathered of his loving partner.
"This is the best present." Declared the young man happily.
"Oh. Well. this. isn't your present?" Explained Breelu haltingly, suddenly more concerned that the avian may have missed his mark with his idea.
"It's not? What.?"
Breelu revealed a harness, already placed on the mountain top inside a bag that Moisés recognised as Breelu's.
"I thought you might want to go for a trip?" The giant birdlike alien offered gently.
"Are you sure? I know with me, we're too heavy for flight. It's a strain for you." The human retorted, not wanting to tire his lover out. This view was good enough for him, he didn't need to go any further if it was an effort.
"On the station, yes. But here? Above the thermals from the underground lava runs? Moisés, would you like to know what it's like to truly fly?"
== 0 ==
A mere ten minutes later, there was a human strapped to the front of a crouching avian, so the shorter of the two could stand on his own feet. A bead of sweat ran down the side of his face as he looked out over the sheer drop of the mountainside. If he fell right now, it wouldn't be much of an issue; the path down was only about ten or twenty feet down.
"I'm going to shove off from the edge to clear the mountain, so it's going to be a sudden jerk first, okay?" Explained Breelu helpfully.
Damn.
Without asking for permission, the avian coiled in an almost imperceptible manner, before his powerful legs exploded outwards, launching the two into nothingness. The weakened gravity of the planet still pulled at the human, but the harness held him in place as the avian at his back wing's opened and he was pulled soring into the sky.
Moisés could feel the heat of the thermal updraft washing over him despite only seeing the mountain fall away and treetops everywhere else. His fists gripped the straps of the harness has the man's heart fluttered in fear and panic as he eyed the ground nervously.
"Chin up!" Called Breelu directly into his ear, over the wind that deafened him to most other noises.
Obeying the human lifted his chin and saw the horizon.
A beautiful rainbow of colours as a foreign sun with strange wavelengths played with an alien atmosphere. The human's eyes watered from both the wind that stung him as well as the beauty that assaulted his senses.
Moisés felt the curve of Breelu's sickle-like claw tickling his fingers, gently easing his grip until the scaled arms took his hands and spread his arms wide.
With his chin up, his arms spread like wings, the young man discovered the sensation of flight and was immediately in love.
A euphoric sense of freedom washed over him as Breelu gently steered them along the valley, following the invisible thermals that raised the pair up and into the sky.

2024.05.08 03:14 ManBearScientist An analysis of my last draft of the format

The Deck.
This was an 0-3 deck that had lost one game to a clear misplay, two others due to a combination of low deck strength and bad starting hands. Analyzing the deck, we can see a few issues to begin with.
First, it had a large graveyard theme with zero enablers. While theoretically it could get to the lategame and win by recurring Spinewoods Armadillo and Hollow Marauder, these types of decks are much better if they managed to nab a few copies of Desperate Marauder and Patient Naturalist to enable their synergies earlier.
Second, it is extremely underpowered. While it only plays a few objectively weak cards, it obviously has no rares and only one premium removal (Throw is premium removal in GW, but is much weaker in GB). This gives it very little catch-up potential if it gets behind. The two drop slot is particularly horrendous, as Bristlepack Sentry is near the bottom of the potential things that could fill it and have very few ways to attack in the deck. So it is likely to get behind, and stay behind before it could stabilize.
It also doesn't really hit the creature counts I want in my GB decks, which plays particularly poorly with the graveyard recursion and Rise of the Varmints.
On the draft and games, I unfortunately don't have them saved in 17lands, so you'll have to trust my writeup.
The Draft:
Pack 1 was Path to Exile as the only rare with Bounding Felidar, Jem Lightfoot, and Visage Bandit at uncommon. At common, the only thing even close to being first picked was a single copy of Desert's Due (which wheeled and made the deck). This was just a weak pack. I chose Path to Exile, because it could theoretically be splashed and was the cheapest of the relatively mediocre cards in the pack. Visage Bandit may have been better, but I didn't want to commit to blue on P1P1, and I certainly didn't want a multicolor card or a 7 drop. I do think it is worth asking if they are better than Path to Exile in a vacuum though..
In pack 1, I found myself in a pretty common place for me this format. I picked mostly noncreature spells as I saw no 2-for-1 commons like Vault Plunderer, signposts I could reasonably play (1 Jolene p1p7 with no green or red cards), or decent sized beaters. I just don't want to take Bridled Bighorn or Giant Beaver P1P3 or P3P4, not over removal anyway. This meant my first picks were Path to Exile, Repulse, Unfortunate Accident, Desert's Due, Seize the Secrets, and a Failed Fording in another particularly weak pack. I finished with a Bridled Bighorn, a Bristlepack Sentry just to have something to do on 2, and the 3 red cards.
Not much white was wheeling, so heading in to pack 2 I had a fair amount of green, blue, and black and needed to make a decision on what the deck would end up looking like. I was willing to jump to just about any reasonable color combination (probably B/x) if I opened a strong rare, as I didn't just much in the way of signals in the first draft. The rare was unfortunately Step Between Worlds, so I picked up Honest Rutstein and tried to solidify as a GB deck. My second pick was a Outcaster Greenblade, which along with two Desert's Dues also made me look for more deserts. I knew I needed to get large targets for Rutstein, and ended up picking up a Cactarantula and a Rictus Robber and little else.
In Pack 3, I first picked Hollow Marauder over Legion Extruder and a Blooming Marsh and picked up a Spinewoods Armadillo relatively late.
I decided to not play the second Throw From the Saddle due to the deck's creature count, which at 12 is definitely not at all where you want to be in GB. In hindsight, it should have been in over at least the Rise of the Varmints, which is near unplayable card without heavy synergy and particularly in this exact low style of low-creature deck (like a board pump at the least). I kept Thrash the Town and Snakeskin Veil in, but they suffer from the same problem.
Unfortunately, aside from an inexplicable P3P6 Spinewood Armadillo, I had few chance to pick up decent creatures in the latter packs, which I knew might be a weakness with the number of playables I had and the need to balance that with a least a few deserts.
The games:
Game 1 I had by far my best showing. The crucial decision came when I had a Bristlepack Sentry in play and a tapped Rattleback Apothecary, holding up a Desert's Due. My opponent had a 2-drop and a Gila Courser in BR. I made the call that it was unlikely that they would have an answer to Desert's Due in those colors)(thinking that the marginal chance of getting lifelink on the Bristlepack Sentry was worth the risk), and was blown out by Return the Favor after passing in what turned out to be a 7 for 1. Their Gila Courser lived, my two creatures died, and they hit a Thunder Salvo when I had a Voracious Varmint and Honest Rutstein in hand and no mana to even play a second card.
They ended up getting 2 At Knifepoints off the Courser before I finally found another removal spell and kept a creature on the board. I may have still lost to that synergy if I hadn't gambled on the extremely marginal chance that my opponent would lose their Gila Courser and still swing in with something, but at least I played a 2-drop and a 3-drop and the issue was a gameplay mistake.
Game 2, I had a 1 land hand with my top-end and mulliganed into a hand with no creatures but a Lush Oasis, Swamp, and Forest. My opponent simply curved out and I couldn't do much, being stuck at 3 lands for most of the game. The final turns consisted my GW opponent swinging with a Stagecoach Security into Rictus Robber plus token (they had Mystic Tether). Next, I had a Hollow Marauder (tapped, attacking to try to close the game out) and and 2 Bristlepack Sentries. The opponent used Throw From the Saddle to force a chump block by clearing out one of the Bristlepack Sentries, and also had a Sterling Supplier. I left myself down a card to a removal spell, but figured I needed to play risky given the mulligan and the opponent being low on cards.
Game 3, I had to make the choice whether or not to mulligan with 2 Swamps, Desert's Due, Badlands Revival, 2 Bristlepack Sentries, and Dance of the Tumbleweeds. I decided that I would do better keeping, and was paid off with a forest turn 1.
My opponent went Geyser Drake into Loan Shark plot + Geyser Drake, and stopped Desert's Due with a Phantom Interference. I kept hitting lands, so I decided it was best to keep Dance of the Tumbleweeds till I could make a creature and enable the Bristlepacks, which kept a Loan Shark from attacking but couldn't get in themselves.
Overall, I think there is an argument that I shouldn't have splashed, but I figured the deck needed late game card draw to close things out. The real weakness was that a turn 2 decision between Desert's Due on a 2/2 or a Bristlepack Sentry is just an extremely weak start to the game, and the deck was too creature and mill light with poor synergy.
My opinion of the format as it stands now is that it is relatively more color-balanced than last month, but both the bonus sheets and play boosters have made it an extremely high variance set. At the top-end, drafts will differ significantly depending on the number of rares they open or get passed. This draft had absolutely zero opportunities to play a strong rare, so it had to get there on synergy and failed. This is something I haven't liked. The drafts prior to this both had exceptional BW removal, but one had 3 Hollow Marauders and 2 Mourner's Surprise and coasted on that synergy while the latter only had one and didn't get enough going. I really didn't ever think you could just play high-value cards in an open color pair and get across the finish line; you needed to be doing something to go over the top.
Play boosters also play into this, and I find the combination of play boosters and 2 bonus sheets distasteful. The missing commons and the high number of 'bad cards' meant that for the first time in a while, I was sometimes struggling to hit playables. It did mean that no color could be forced, but it also meant that you couldn't easily salvage a draft by forcing a deep archetype.
Finally, I found that I have never had a format where I struggled with mana as much as this one. The high top-end and low depth meant that risky splashing was often something worth doing, but more than that the format didn't have any mechanic that helped substantially reduce non-games. That meant a larger than normal (for modern limited at least) number of games with hard mulligan decisions and losses from how your lands where shuffled into the deck. Of course, the format's tendency to go long also meant that it was much more likely to get into top-deck wars where hitting three or four lands is just something that happens.
At first, I liked the shenanigans you could get up to in the format (my first draft went the distance with Archive Trap). But as time went on, the combination of the set's high-variance nature and the Arena economy simply made it too stressful for me to play. The high of going 7-0 with a deck with multiple crazy bombs is just not equal to the low of going 0-3, especially when the economy says a 7-0 (+750) is worth half of what a 0-3 is (-1450).
I'm sure if I had infinite money or time, I could raise my win percentage back up to where I was when I last hit mythic. But I'm not going to spend $200 putting enough gems on my account that I won't care about a bad draft or two in a row, and I honestly was having a miserable time by my last few drafts.
Going forward, I wouldn't be surprised if my issues with this set persist. though really my biggest issue is with Arena's economy. I just don't like the high cost and poor EV of drafts in a ranked format, especially when the cards you get cannot be traded or redeemed for cash. My stress would almost instantly go away and I'd appreciate formats more if I could just pay either a marginal cost per draft or a single-lump sum to phantom draft a format. I think sets will keep being high variance, with few mechanics to prevent non-games, and almost the exact same cast of commons from set to set thanks to the new design skeleton and reduction of the number of commons.

Experience with Algorand

Pact has emerged as one of the most user-friendly Algorand dApps, offering deep liquidity and low transaction fees. Leveraging Algorand’s speed and scalability, Pact provides accessible smart contract functionality, making transactions available to users of all levels of wealth and experience.

Present Proposal

This proposal is for retroactive funding for Pacts StableSwap Pools. StableSwaps are very important, and a cornerstone to DeFi across all chains. We are proud to have brought this product to market and are the only Algorand DEX with this feature.
Stable swaps are a type of cryptocurrency exchange mechanism designed primarily for trading between stablecoins or other assets with low price volatility. They were first introduced by the protocol Curve Finance. The primary aim of stable swaps is to allow users to trade between different stablecoins (like USD Coin, Tether, Dai, etc.) efficiently, with minimal slippage and lower fees compared to traditional exchange mechanisms used for more volatile cryptocurrencies.

Deliverable

Benefits for the community

Increased Awareness to Algorand & Pact:
Having tools like Stable Swaps is very important both for Algorand & Pact as it signals to new potential users that we have a robust DeFi landscape and can be competitive with other chains. These futures are, but not limited to:
Low Slippage: Slippage refers to the difference between the expected price of a trade and the price at which the trade is executed. Stable swaps are optimized for assets whose values are supposed to remain constant or nearly constant, thus reducing slippage even during large trades.
Efficient Use of Liquidity: These swaps utilize specialized mathematical formulas (like the StableSwap invariant from Curve) that require less liquidity to achieve the same level of slippage compared to traditional Automated Market Makers (AMMs) used for more volatile cryptocurrencies.
Lower Fees: Because these trades involve lower risk and volatility, the transaction fees are lower than those for trading highly volatile crypto assets.
Focused on Stablecoins: While traditional AMMs can handle a wide range of cryptocurrencies, stable swaps are specifically designed for stablecoins or similarly behaving assets, providing a more tailored and effective solution for these types of trades.
Arbitrage Opportunities: Despite the primary focus on stablecoins, price discrepancies can still occur, and stable swaps provide opportunities for arbitrage, allowing traders to profit from differences in pricing between different stablecoins.

2024.05.06 04:38 Glad_Historian_3789 Is she intrested?

I met a girl through my best friend. Our encounters were always in the comfortable cocoon of our group hangouts, where laughter intertwined with shared moments. Her presence added a vibrant hue to these gatherings, and as time passed, I couldn't help but notice the subtle nuances in her interactions with me.
We exchanged numbers, a digital tether that expanded our connection beyond the physical realm of group meetings. Our chats were easy, flowing effortlessly from playful banter to deeper conversations about life's intricacies. Yet, amidst the laughter and shared stories, there were moments—fleeting glances and subtle gestures—that hinted at something more.
It was in those stolen seconds, when our eyes met in a shared understanding, that I felt a flutter of anticipation. Was it just my imagination running wild, or did she too feel a tug of attraction amidst our camaraderie? The uncertainty danced in my mind, a delicate thread weaving through the fabric of our friendship.
As days turned into weeks, I found myself drawn to her not just for her wit and charm but also for the way her laughter lit up the room. And yes, I couldn't deny the physical attraction—the way her eyes sparkled with mischief, the curve of her smile that invited warmth, and yes, her thighs that carried a subtle allure.
Yet, beneath these feelings lay a layer of caution. Our friendship, nurtured within the safety of our group dynamics, was precious. I didn't want to risk disrupting the harmony we had built or creating any awkwardness that could seep into our shared moments.
So, I treaded cautiously, navigating the uncharted waters of unspoken attraction. I sought subtle cues in our conversations and gatherings, looking for signs that mirrored my own feelings. Did her laughter linger a bit longer when we exchanged jokes? Did her gaze hold a touch of longing in those fleeting glances?
At times, it felt like a silent dance of emotions, each step calculated yet filled with a sense of anticipation. I found myself analyzing every word, every smile, searching for hidden meanings in the tapestry of our interactions.
Yet, amidst this delicate dance, I also cherished our friendship, the easy camaraderie that bound us together. Our group hangouts became moments of shared joy, where inside jokes and shared memories wove a tapestry of camaraderie.
I found solace in these moments, in the comfort of her presence and the laughter we shared. It was a delicate balance—navigating the realms of friendship and potential romance, each step measured yet filled with unspoken longing.
I am confused with this situation....

2024.05.02 05:50 meshflesh40 Any other mellinials became less frugal in their 30s?

I remember in my 20s... I saved up $25 for 15 months straight to afford my 1st smartphone(blackberry curve). I took pride in not going into debt.
I churned credit cards for the bonus money. Opened checking accounts solely for the $200 direct deposit bonus.
Agressively saved all my money. My mentality was that i had all the time in the world. Why rush?
My mindset back then was "why be an early adopter?? Prices always fall". "If I cant pay cash, then I can't afford it" , "wow,, the bar is a waste of money..i can save tons by drinking at home!!, im not a sucker"!
I felt so smart and ahead of all the sheep.
But now in my 30s...i feel like time is shorter these days. If I want something ,I get it right away. Ill sit at the bar and leave a big tip. Who cares if the latest smartphone will be 1/2 off a year or two after release ?
Soon..ill be in my 40s.... I can get A dehabilitating disease and all the money im my bank account wont even matter.
I surprised myself with this mindset shift. I never thought i would be the wasteful person that I am now.
Anyone else became less frugal in their 30s?
Note: im not in debt or anything. But i dont hoard cash like I used to neither.

2024.05.01 18:45 Dear-Yellow-5479 Rebel who finds a cause - Cassian Andor the ‘very talented loser’ - Part 2

I was going to spend all of this second part on making the case against ‘diagnosing’ Cassian with Borderline Personality Disorder, but the really excellent comments on Part 1 of my post yesterday do that far better than I can here, and I urge you to read them if you haven’t. Getting the perspective of those directly involved in diagnostic and therapeutic professions is invaluable, and I am straight up going to recommend that you read the long essay I link to at the end, which is from Drea Letamendi, a psychologist who is often employed as a consultant for films and tv shows. I am not sure if she was directly hired for Andor, but her take is a really interesting one - although I will say that I disagree with some of it, largely where she shows a slight lack of knowledge of the show’s details. But see what you think. I open the question to the floor. ;)
What the commenters from yesterday generally noticed, though they were polite enough not to say it, was that I was being extremely selective with my choice of bulleted symptoms. And three of the main the ones I left out are pretty decisive:
BPD sufferers cannot be cured - Cassian very clearly does ‘get better’.
They lack emotional resilience - Cassian very clearly has this. As a commenter yesterday pointed out, he’d be dead by now if he didn’t have it.
They lack ‘normal’, stable empathy - Cassian has this in spades, for better or for worse.
Put in very colloquial terms: when he needs to, or is challenged to, or is enabled to, or is inspired to… Cassian is able to ‘get his shit together’, very quickly and effectively. There is absolutely no way that someone with BPD can do that. He is emotionally damaged by childhood trauma but is at least in a state of emotional stability for most of the time; in contrast, BPD represents an almost constant state of flux and with it the loss of a sense of true self.
So, for the rest of this essay I’m going to look at the other ways in which the ‘unresolved childhood trauma’ impacts Cassian and more importantly, and positively, how he is able to overcome it.
Emotional resilience
Cassian’s emotional resilience is an obvious strength, but I think it’s fair to say that it’s also the mechanism through which he has buried his trauma. He often represses his feelings, including his anger. I think that’s why he is so contained and controlled for most of the time, giving the impression of not giving much away. It’s a safety mechanism. It’s in often subtly portrayed moments of emotional vulnerability that we see how powerful his feelings are, and how they could be ‘better’ harnessed.
Controlling his emotions can be seen as negative, fuelling his repression of the trauma. But his emotions have got him into trouble in the past, and he’s keen to avoid that happening again if he can. When it comes to his anger, it’s a real tightrope walk and it’s fascinating to watch Luthen balancing fanning the flames with trying to direct those flames towards the Empire rather than himself. The scene in the warehouse, with Cassian getting ever closer with the blaster, is brilliant because we’ve already seen that Cassian can and will kill. Ironically, however, he didn’t actually deliberately kill either Pre-Mor guard in anger. The last time he genuinely responded with anger isn’t revealed until Ep. 7… and we realise all at once how the story fits together. Cassian’s anger at the Empire for murdering his adoptive father led to him assaulting some Troopers and ‘An Imperial Officer’ which led to … those three years in youth prison he mentions in Ep. 5 and the Mimban service he mentions in Ep. 4. (What fantastic storytelling, incidentally, to reveal the full picture over such a long span and by non-linear narrative leaps).
Letamendi has an interesting take on violence - she distinguishes two kinds: Affected and Instrumental. The former being emotional and reactionary and the latter calculated and directed. She suggests that Cassian is already fully able to engage in the latter (as he is clearly used to doing by Rogue One). Again, this needs emotional control.
Cassian is shown to adapt his behaviour according to his audience, and it’s one of the ways in which I find Eps. 1-2 so fascinating. The various ways in which he interacts with others - adapting lies accordingly, for example - is quite masterful, even if it does become clear that a lot of the people of Ferrix are at the end of their tether with him. He’s mercurial, slippery, charming, pleading, direct or contrite as the situation demands.
However, Letamendi argues that Cassian is in danger of losing his sense of self due to this ‘self-mutability’. She suggests that his outsider status has challenged his sense of self. I’m not sure about the extent to which I agree with this, but it’s compelling in terms of how the character has been framed previously, as someone from outside of the community, with a cover story about coming from a planet of refugees (she goes into some detail about Fest and likely attitudes towards that) and considers the impact of all the various identities and different names he has over the course of his life:
“The self is a process, not an object. But might Andor’s constant chameleonic behavior get the better of him, make him forget who he really is? When does his self-erasure become no less oppressive than the fascists who seek to expurgate his culture?”
I’m not sure about that, but there is a similar assessment in the excellent article by Marina Snodgrass:
“Cassian cheats, steals, sleeps around, he’s a coward and a deserter, a small-time crook. The only thing that gives him any purpose is his search for his lost sister and that feels more like a story he tells himself to give himself some sense of self-worth. Cassian has no idea who he is or what he wants.”
I like that assessment of the search for his sister especially. It makes a lot of sense of his on-again, off-again attitude towards it, something early reviews dismissed as a kind of plot hole. I think he’s torn because he doesn’t really want to face the truth of what happened to her. And yet, the lack of closure is clearly torturous too. It’s perhaps another way that he ‘starts to believe his own sob-story’ (Gilroy).
Always look on the bright side of life
Another way in which Cassian’s emotional resilience is suggested is by showing that despite everything, he is an optimist. In some ways, this is damaging and we see this side with his interactions with Pegla at the end of Episode 1. Blatantly and brazenly lying as he replaces the ship he flew to Morlana 1’s flight recorder with a blank so as to cover his tracks, and doing this in broad daylight in a way that puts Pegla in danger of losing his job, Cassian says that he was going to ask if he could borrow the ship again - presumably not to return it (anytime soon) as he’s planning his get away. And he is genuinely and rather pathetically bemused when Pegla tells him to ‘Get out and don’t come back’ (all to the strains of the track ‘The Cassian Way’ that links the scene to the last time he saw his sister). But the point is that he was absolutely expecting to be granted the favour, expecting it even as he is brazenly exploiting the favour-giver. It’s the ‘bad’ side of optimism, if you like, this expectation of forgiveness and of being given ‘favours’ and ‘deals’ ad infinitem. This is actually another overlap with some BPD characteristics. Nonetheless, it’s clearly been helping Cassian emotionally, and once he has better direction for this optimism we can see it as a real positive. Optimism means hope. Without hope, there is no Rebellion and there is no willing-to-sacrifice-it-all Captain Andor.
Love and forgiveness as defence against despair
One of the reasons Cassian has been able to coast by thus far (Gilroy implies this won’t last indefinitely, or even much longer) is probably down to Ferrix, and the way this community works. Cassian has clearly been cut a lot of slack over the years since his return from youth prison and Mimban, and by being the adopted son of the universally loved Maarva. Pegla embraces him warmly in the finale and it’s clear that he has if not love then a great deal of sympathy from the community for what he has been through and what he is going through now. Properly acknowledging the unfairness of what happened to the teenage Cassian is going to be a big part of Ferrix’s ‘awakening’ when they listen to Maarva’s eulogy. For Cassian himself, he is somebody who is capable of love because he has been loved. Maarva acknowledges the pain of love and it’s a vital lesson for Cassian too: learning that love means worrying about others but that for the greater good… it can’t stand in the way of making the right decision. True love is selfless and … lets go.
The other really crucial way in which Cassian is shown to be an optimist is that he ‘easily forgives himself’ (Luna) . Perhaps that’s a bad thing when he has done something wrong - but as a survival mechanism it keeps him from plunging into the kind of apathetic despair that we see from Syril, who shows signs of genuine depression with far less obvious excuse. In other words, when Cassian makes a decision - notably, to kill somebody - he doesn’t beat himself up with guilt about it. Decision made, move on. He is basically a man of action, commits to that action and doesn’t brood over it afterwards. Unlike Syril.
He does beat himself up about other things but this is a crucial survival mechanism for someone who takes life or death decisions. (We are already getting hints of what will make him a top assassin).
Despite everything he’s gone through and everything that was taken away from him before he even started, to borrow phrasing from Maarva, he only seems to succumb to apathetic depression on (interestingly) Niamos and to despair (though only briefly) in prison. The reason for that? Because he is always curious, perceptive, clever, inventive and - empathetic.
Empathy - Feeling for others
Cassian’s empathy is entirely healthy, and extremely well developed. As a positive, it makes him highly skilled at reading people. But as with his optimism, his empathy can be seen as something negative when it comes to his childhood trauma: It feeds his guilt. The fact that he feels everything that has happened to him so, for want of a better word, ‘normally’ is the root cause of a lot of his pain. There is one way in which he very obviously does not forgive himself easily. It’s that ‘fear of being someone who leaves people behind’ (Gilroy). That can easily extend to a fear of letting people down - failing them in terms of their expectations (we see pretty quickly that he really wants to make Maarva proud and is genuinely ashamed when he ‘messed up’) - or failing them quite literally. He feels he let down his sister by leaving her behind and that he let down his tribe leader by not … doing something to stop her killing. But he faces up to all this as he starts his journey to becoming a Rebel. On Aldhani, he starts to care for others - his siding with Skeen that they take Nemik to the doctor and his subsequent disgust as Skeen’s betrayal is a huge (and healthy) part of his learning curve. And in turn, the simple goodness of Nemik might well remind Cassian of the goodness of the people of Ferrix and his loved ones - and how he might start to behave a bit less selfishly with them.
That all said, I agree with Gilroy’s assessment – if events had not unfolded the way they had, I can absolutely see Cassian frittering away his days as a “waste of talent”. Referring to the comments from yesterday’s post - “ his life is shit” and he is indeed like a “bright or even gifted child”, responding in a very understandable way to a lack of proper stimulation and challenge.
Maarva gets it right - eventually Cassian will ‘know everything he needs to know and feels everything he needs to feel.’ The words suggest a ‘cure’, but whatever happens in S2 we know that Cassian still has the weight of the past on his shoulders by the time of Rogue One. But it’s a weight that he carries gracefully, and that he has channeled - so as to become ‘an unstoppable force for good’.
As Letamendi puts it: “Research shows that engaging in social action and activism can increase psychological well-being by enhancing a sense of empowerment, giving purpose and offering a more salient identity.”
In episode 12, Brasso tells Cassian - off on an extremely dangerous attempt to rescue Bix - to ‘look after’ himself. The reply is fascinating: ‘It’s too late for that.” What brilliant writing, again. It says two things: that Cassian realises that he is no longer looking out for himself, but also that he now realises that he never really was looking after himself previously either. It’s acknowledging, in other words, his previously self-destructive behaviour. Recognising that is a huge step to have made towards putting the negatives of his past behind him.
Cassian learns to value himself, and find his true place in life – to become a rebel with an actual cause. In a very real sense, the Rebellion was Cassian Andor’s therapy.
….
Thank you for the lively discussion; as ever, I salute the provocative exchange of ideas. Seriously - I wish some other Reddit subs out there were as full of rich and supportive discussion as this one. I would not dare to risk a close look at mental health issues on most of those. (Let alone post very long essays!)
