2-2

Boom vs Shopify Rebellion

Boom: 0-2 vs XG, 2-0 vs Heroic, 2-1 vs Secret, 1-2 vs GG
SR: 0-2 vs BB, 2-1 vs VP, 2-0 vs Liquid, 0-2 vs Aurora
https://preview.redd.it/4adinqdlon0d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=e0da20b52e5e291926586a551081f3df0c71ddf1
Boom were in a downward spiral post-laning stage. After back-to-back fights where the Morph was caught in a Static Storm and killed (the first time was almost griefing when he was agi shifting), Shopify barreled down mid and continued their aggression. SR fearlessly dove their enemies past tier 3s. Boom no longer wanted to be part of the game after 27 minutes. SR with the convincing opener. SR 1-0 Boom.
https://preview.redd.it/qflrlwuoon0d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=598e5d94842e8487b68c09ab9caf9dcf85776156
The Bristleback became too much of a problem for Shopify. Boom's cores had considerable damage over time so SR needed short fights but there simply was no bursting the tanky cores on Boom with an Io backing them up. A lot relied on the Black Hole of Saberlight but a game-altering opportunity was never presented to Enigma. The final high-ground siege came with a Refresher on Brewmaster who bullied his opponents. The Dire couldn't even get close and even if they did, Kunkka's Water Park was too much of a nuisance. The Dire had to use their BKBs to run away. The Weaver with his BKB on cooldown got decimated in the aftermath. Enigma had to buyback and he forced a desperate Black Hole with no spell immunity which lasted less than a second. It was all Boom at the latter stages and they did a brilliant job forcing a game 3. Boom 1-1 SR.
https://preview.redd.it/0omalm9son0d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=b1d9caa7dda0cfab15a22d4585617405e72c7f7c
The two sides were fairly even early on but the lack of any impactful Chronos as the game progressed meant Boom had an easier time taking over. This is not an attack on Artour but that was a very lacklustre performance in an elimination game. Boom grew in confidence as the game got late (which shouldn't be the case against a Void). Boom had no trouble controlling and destroying the Void in fights. The final nail in the coffin came in the 40th minute. Void and his 2 supports get a kill on a solo Hoodwink. Void carelessly sticks around in the mid lane. Gets caught by a Grip. Dies for 90s with no buyback. On his respawn, the game is over. As a result of this loss, NA will be the only region not present in the playoffs and Boom will be the flagbearers of South America. Congrats to Boom. Boom 2-1 SR.

G2.iG vs BetBoom

G2.iG: 0-2 vs Liquid, 1-2 vs Secret, 2-1 vs AR, 2-0 vs Nouns
BB: 2-0 vs SR, 0-2 vs Aurora, 2-0 vs Mouz, 0-2 vs Spirit

BetBoom were trying their best to make things happen around the map early on but iG were reacting accordingly and made sure the opposition didn't get much. As the match progressed, iG's grip on the game only became tighter. The Chinese greedy strat of the pos 4 becoming a core was in full effect. Boboka's Clinkz was phenomenal. He ended with a higher networth than Brew & Timber. The Bone Fletcher provided great scouting for his team and was an incredible source of damage during the fights. Along with Luna's toolkit and Slardar's control + minus armor, BB dropped like flies in the fights. It got one-sided real quick and the Eastern Europeans had no way back into contention. G2.iG 1-0 BB.
https://preview.redd.it/di9r67r1pn0d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=8eee1106951766acc1bd23ec6d10676a63689395
The scripts were flipped for the second game. This time, it was BetBoom's turn to give a drubbing. G2.iG were spanked in the lanes. Boboka looked like he was trying to end global hunger with the way he was feeding in the laning stage. BetBoom snowballed and G2.iG got trampled on. We go to game 3. BB 1-1 G2.iG.
https://preview.redd.it/2hra7y86pn0d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=c916f5945628cd62a79033de622be9613fa5b16f
The Slap Fighting Championship continues and it's G2.iG's turn to slap. BetBoom couldn't really get anything going. During the fights, they had to commit so much to take down 1 core target. TA became such a monster that even Sven didn't want to trade hits with her. The Zeus paired with the TA Traps gave great vision which complemented the long-range disables the supports of G2.iG had. Shoutout to xNova for the spectacular display on Disruptor. 0 deaths! A rushed blink dagger meant BetBoom had to be extra careful with their positioning. He gave his opponents hell with his Glimpse plays and gave his team an easy victory. After finishing 2nd in Birmingham, BetBoom continue to show their inconsistent end product and will bow out in the groups. As for G2.iG, after losing their first 2 series to start the tournament, they have woken up, won 3 straight series, and will be the second Chinese team to play in the playoffs. Congrats to them. G2.iG 2-1 BB.

Liquid vs Secret

Liquid: 2-0 vs G2.iG, 0-2 vs XG, 0-2 vs SR, 2-0 vs Mouz
Secret: 0-2 vs GG, 2-1 vs G2.iG, 1-2 vs Boom, 2-1 vs VP
https://preview.redd.it/o5z8ai9apn0d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=6783172e3d7fbe659d272df43296538dce04e502
Secret looked like they were going to run away with the game. They had a great lead and a Sniper who looked untouchable with an Io backing him up. But Liquid had other plans. An Aegis siege for Secret at the 40th minute would be the beginning of their downfall. The Sniper's first life was the first casualty and chaos would ensue. Micke was incredible in weaving in and out of the fight while dishing out extreme damage to take out the opposition. DK would end up as the lone survivor for Secret as Liquid had a successful defense with no buildings lost. Secret's undoing continued in the Rosh pit. Secret were taking out Roshan but they only finished him once he was already in front of the twin gates. A brave 33 who went through the twin gates got rewarded as his Water Park secured him the Aegis. Secret would get decimated in the ensuing fight with only Engima surviving. Secret would continue to crumble. They could not offer the same high-ground defense as their opponents. Bane and Batrider were able to secure valuable targets before a defense could even be done. A lot was on the shoulders of Enigma's Black Hole but Insania understood the assignment. The Grip was patiently used to cancel Enigma's ult and dash any hopes Secret had. Liquid pulled off another incredible comeback. Liquid 1-0 Secret.
https://preview.redd.it/bqxqd0sfpn0d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=8e1cf4c23ef2d36bb54c96aa03c5b7e7561ce8e0
The second game had a completely different script from the first. Secret were the ones who did the chasing but this time around, there was no catching up. Liquid accrued an insurmountable advantage. Secret did show a lot of fight despite the hole they were in but they had zero answers for Nisha's Timbersaw. Rizzrack was beyond dominant. He was completely untouched for the second half of the game and it all became too much for Secret in the end. Nisha takes his team to the next round. Liquid 2-0 Secret.

2024.05.15 23:11 knifykat I often forget, i am not normal and people cannot read minds

It comes with a spoonful of distrust for the self.. when you attempt to seek relation and comfort from others, even when that thing comes from a "negative" place.. and when i use the word negative I don't mean bad, I mean negative in the way a battery has a positive and negative side, there always needs to be a place for both sides of things
In the pursuit of being understood, trying to "improve" things for people, trying to spread joy and happiness by fixing as big and unattainable problem and solution that is possible, thereby forcing myself into a state of perpetual procrastination, the pain of meaning well, and hurting others in the path to try and heal people.. it does not feel good yet it seems people think I get joy out of it
I realize.. when people misunderstand me, misunderstand my rants or even on the fly statements, on the internet or real life.. if I start using more words, and more complex or abstract words it does NOT make you easier to understand.. it makes it harder for people sometimes.. being louder and more passionate and more detailed.. these things can be nuanced and just cause more problems, people just default to seeing rage, and associate rage with stupidity, which is understandable yet undesirable
People cannot read my mind, they do not know I assume they know what I know, i assume all people are intelligent to a degree, that I do not hate or discriminate any kind of person, they see my rage and assume I hate everyone and everything, where it is the complete opposite.. people cannot read my mind, they don't know I think highly of strangers and consider anyone I talk to a "friend", I speak too freely and get myself in trouble, I panic and defend myself sometimes, Ironically people saying normal statements come across as an attack to me.. i don't ever purposefully participate in hypocrisy
and god forbid, like me, you attempt to do all these things at once, having a loud passionate rant, using unnecessary words and complex theories to try and explain a simple feeling, accidently being a hypocrite, all while spewing a paragraph to a complete stranger, and despite wanting to express it, I do not relate to or seem to understand certain feelings or simple straight forward feelings, things either work, or they don't, and when something says "I work, I work like this" and then it doesn't work.. its a spiral
Even in the past, conversations and disputes, "losing" debates where I was objectively correct, and I mean socially losing because I accidently used an insult too soon, or showed I was angry, and by insulting someone I declare a loss? because I shake when I upset I lose? I'm not discussing bullying right now, but it will always exist because it is apart of the social game. Even I have bullied in an attempt to be like others.
its like the pain of having a wifi connection that -kinda- works, and the 'movie' freezes.. but you keep trying.. wait to buffer.. freeze again etc..
yet if there is no wifi.. a book or a painting is an easy task. at least for me personally..
I have been criticized and taunted and bullied into following rules my whole life any time i am different, yet when I try and get others, be like others, in this system, like people who make and accept the rules, it makes me wish they would to do as they do and not just as they say, its like I am the crazy one no matter which way I function, whether that be with or against the current
Government and bureaucracy (I hate spelling that word T_T ) ... easy to criticize these concepts as they function in reality, but on paper, if things really work both ways in the sense that between entity and individual things are always fair and spoken for, then life in this "Late neo capitalist nightmare", even communism on paper works, or would work or could be better.. I dunno, maybe it is just human error.. or maybe nature has a way
I find it hard to accept that "things do be how they are"
I don't think "regular capitalism" is bad per say, ex; two people make chairs, one person makes higher quality chairs, and one person makes lower quality chairs, they compete in prices and quality, contention is natural, and its good for the consumer to have choices, there is a reason competing brands are often across the road from one another, not across town. (think fast food chains all huddled up) its not a coincidence (can look up the ice cream stall on the beach dilemma for similar phenomena)
Advertisement.. truly one of the poisons that is connected to every issue I swear I have ever complained about..
Anyway, despite appearances, and my past, or my future, i don't actually smoke meth or and amphetes.. I do have a heavy past with EVERY drug. I have travelled many places, been many people, lived amongst many subcultures, from farm to city, analog to digital, I've done a lot, but I don't party or do drugs anymore, I live with my partner and build my life alone, a ways away from strangers theses days
I honestly thought -everyone- did things to the same extreme degree I have, everyone had extreme views, extreme trauma, and extreme attitudes they were just masking, but maybe I am just a little extreme at times.. sex workers.. drugs.. parties.. fast cars.. i thought that shit was NORMAL.. I don't know what normal is.. imitating others lead to a wild life
I am NOT mentally ill... I'm just Autistic.. I don't think that means I "need" to see a therapist anymore.. already done that. Everytime I am frustrated by something that is objectively and subjectively frustrating.. and well it is frustrating, years ago I was mis-diagnosed with BPD, it ruined my life and only added to my "meth head" behavior, I done healed my brain, I done my rounds in therapy and with doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists and meds, been in and out of mental wards, arrested, convicted, you name it, I've done it. doesn't mean I'm proud of it just because I am proud of who I am now
I do not want to brag. or be a victim. or come across as a crazy. none of this is for attention, i actively hide from attention, I literally cannot avoid it, but I also still have thoughts worth sharing, all people do
I just want to share my thoughts and experiences in a passionate and honest way, to help others, I know people like me are out there.. not even just people who are like me, but anyone and literally everyone.. so sick of groups that "accept everyone" when they reaally mean "Accept everyone who is exactly like us".. social scripts and other forms of what I call "Toxic Positivity" which to me, is worse than just being toxic half the time
it doesn't bother me if no one ever reads this, or anything I write, I have novels of notes I don't know what to do with, either way, I appreciate you, I appreciate your time, even if you are here just to read the rants of a crazy, then well.. I love you for simply existing.
I know you are out there, and everything.. -something- just doesn't feel "right", you know?

2024.05.15 21:51 al_1985 I feel bad for the entire cast

I can understand that people dislike the show, I mean, it's okay not to like it if the narrative doesn't appeal you, it's so easy to just not watching it. However, I will never understand the active hate thrown not only to the show but also to the cast. The actors are not responsible of the flaws of the script and they work with what it's given to them. And I feel bad for them, because after all, they are working in the show with enthusiasm and illusion to deliver from their side, and yet, they keep being trashed and even bullied online by a ruthless "fandom" that somehow do not find anything positive in the show.
Why that joy in trying to humiliate everything involved in the series?

2024.05.15 18:44 TheGentleman300 Conquest Chapter 18: the worst chapter in the series imo, and rewriting it (part 1)

A friend of mine started playing Fates for the first time, so once again I got bitten by the “complaining about Fates” bug. In particular, watching chapter 18 of Conquest again after so many years really got me going, and while the general consensus I’ve seen online about this chapters writing was negative, I wasn’t that satisfied by any of the overviews of it I read. I decided to give it a shot myself.
Dissecting why something doesn’t work is fun and all, but I think it’s also important to be constructive which is why I wanted to rewrite this chapter alongside my criticisms. I really do think there’s a lot of potential here that could have been the highlight of the entire story, and so I’d love to try my hand rewriting this chapter to be what it could have been rather than what we got. I have most of it done already, but Reddit only has so many characters before it cuts you off and this post is plenty long enough as is, so I’ll save that for another part coming up soon. This will be part 1, explaining what the chapter is and elaborating on my issues with it, while part 2 will be rewriting it along with my thought process and explanations.
Recap: https://fireemblem.fandom.com/wiki/Black_%26_White/Script
Corrin and Co are traveling when they decide to rest for the night at the nation of Izumo. They are greeted by Izana, the archduke of the kingdom, who seems to be a real goofball. After introducing himself, the levity is ended when it’s revealed the entire Hoshidan family has been invited here as well! Before any swords can be undrawn, Izana tells both parties that the kingdom has a strict neutrality pact neither of them can violate.
The scene cuts to later, where Ryoma enters Corrin and Xanders room to talk with them. Xander and Ryoma’s argument is cut short when Ryoma is dragged off by Nohrians. Turns out “Izana” is actually a Nohrian mage named Zola, who disguised himself to trick the Hoshidan royal family into a trap. Corrin and Xander don’t approve of such dishonorable methods to win, however, and fight to rescue their captives with Xander saying “we’ll win this war with honor or die trying”. After Leo kills Zola, the game cuts to later where we see Nohrians and Hoshidans alike having a meal, much to the delight of the real Izuma, who turns out is exactly as bizarre as the fake impression. Xander and Ryoma confirm with eachother that their fight will continue as usual, but Corrin states that no matter what happens they’re grateful they got to see both families eating together even if it’s not under the best circumstances, and the chapter ends with them saying they’ll revel in this feeling.
So on paper, I think this chapter is a great idea. Despite being at war, when one family is at the total mercy of the other, they lend a hand instead of kicking them while they’re down. This highlights how the two nations could accomplish so much together if only they weren’t at war with eachother. If utilized well, this could have been a great “eye of the tornado scene” emphasizing how tragic it is that these two families who share so much in common are forced by fate to fight eachother, making it all the more sorrowful when that’s brought to it’s conclusion through bloodshed. This would also encourage Conquest players to buy Birthright in a natural and subtle way as well now that they’ve had a nice sample of the other side. Of course, I don’t think this chapter was utilized well, and after reading the script again I believe it boils down to three major problems.
-Problem 1: The Lack of Worldbuilding Causes the Conflict to be Driven by Contrivances.
This is one of the many instances where the lack of fleshing out the world and it’s rules out really hampers the weight of the scenes. Unlike Awakening where there was a general cause-and-effect outlining the level structure, all of the Fates routes are much more individual and self-contained when it comes to chapters. This means the game has to really stretch itself to justify this elaborate setup being brought up and solved in one single chapter of regular length, and it’s very apparent when you write out the summary of events here.
Corrin and his army are just walking by when they happen upon the capital of the country. Corrin decides this would be a great place to rest for the night at and are instantly welcomed by its leader, who is also the only person in the game of that country. The entire Hoshidan family also just happen to bump into us because they coincidently came here at roughly the same time, with somehow neither party noticing the other until they were staring at eachother in the same room.
The only thing we know about this new nation we’ve never seen or heard about before is that it’s a peace-loving land with some sort of neutrality pact which means the two nations can’t fight here. What is the importance of this place that would entice all the Hoshidan royals to come over for a banquet in the middle of their country being invaded? Never explained. What exactly is this pact and what power does Izuno have to enforce it, if any? Never explained. Xander, prince of a nation at war and frontline general, has never heard of it. How does Garon or Iago never figure out or look into what happened here, considering the royals walked through their trap unharmed and everybody in charge of the trap vanished? Never brought up.
How many times here was this supposedly major event dependent on coincidences, seemingly important details left completely unexplained, and characters not knowing things that should be basic information of the world they live in? Things like all this quickly build up and make the world feel small scale and artificial, as if nothing truly exists until it’s in the peripheral vision of main characters. In a vacuum, this could all be excusable if the main meat of the chapter was just so dense and important that they just want a convenient excuse to delve into it. But about that…
-Problem 2: Nothing happens, either character-wise or plot-wise.
This is the only scene in both Birthright and Conquest where all eight of the royal families are together in one spot, and they’re unable to fight eachother. What a brilliant idea! How many great scenes could you come up with from this setup alone? How many directions could this move towards?
-The families bonding over their memories with Corrin (X)
-Calling eachother out for uncool actions, like Ryoma refusing to help Elise or Nohr siccing monsters on farming villages (X)
-Working together to defeat some threat they’d have trouble taking down on their own (X)
-Some cultural exchange (X)
-Some melancholy scene where, even if there’s a lot of resentment, they acknowledge how this may be the last time they ever get to have a meal with Corrin. (Somewhat?)
-Corrin sits down and has a mature conversation with his birth family elaborating on their choice to stay with Nohr (X)
-Some negotiation or debate between the two families about the future of their countries relationship, successful or not (X)
-Corrin being formally declared by the Hoshidan royals as a Nohrian, officially cutting them out of the family (X)
So what does Conquest do with this prompt? It does the unexpected route where all of them but Ryoma are shuffled out as soon as they’re introduced, captured offscreen, rescued offscreen, most of their dinner is offscreen, finishing their meal and leaving is offscreen, all of them sans Ryoma have barely any dialog, and none of them are even present in any of the CG’s.
We actually start off strong, Ryoma and Xander naturally puff out their chest and don’t get along when they’re in the same room, but seem to calm down when Corrin elaborates on how similar they are to eachother. But the game is so eager to get to fighting that it drags Ryoma away kicking and screaming before he even gets to share what he had to say to Corrin, let alone explore what having common ground means to the two of them.
1) I understand this is the Nohrian route so it makes sense the focus is mostly on them, but Takumi only gets three lines here, one of which is “…” Hinoka also only gets three lines, which I think is still more than she got in Birthright, and two of those lines are “You!” and “What are you doing here?”. Sakura lucks out as she’s the only sibling on either side who has anything to say whatsoever when Corrin says they’re grateful they could share another meal with the Hoshidans. That’s a start, but the fact remains Ryoma is the only sibling in the chapter whose remotely relevant, the rest could be omitted and nothing would change. They are only here to be damsels in distress heightening the stakes of defeating the local bad guy rather than providing any character development, checking up on how they are doing without Corrin and Azura, comparing and contrasting their differences between their counterparts, sharing any new information about them, foreshadowing Takumi’s possession, any notable interactions with their counterparts, etc. But no, nothing happens.
2) I also understand this is a video game and they don’t have all the time in the world before the next fight has to happen, yet Conquest is oddly completely uninterested in it’s own set-up. Zola, a minor chapter boss introduced and killed in this chapter, has more screentime and relevance here than any of the siblings, something you’d think would be the actual meat of the chapter they’d want to delve into.
The implications and weight of two dueling nations and families obligated to pause their fighting and dine with eachother could easily take up two or even three chapters as a pivotal arc, yet it’s completely blazed through as if the game considered it a cute novelty rather than a potential life-changing or history-changing moment. Simply put, it’s wasted potential, as if to say “Oh both of the two families meeting in a game about choosing between mutually exclusive families? Eh whatever.”
I wanna stick with just this chapter and not rewrite a good chunk of the entire story, but I can’t stress enough that in any other game this chapter would be the plot-defining moment paving the new way forward rather than chapter 15’s “we’ll expose Garon as a monster by helping him invade an innocent people.”
Neither of the two families are fighting because they outright want to, this isn’t a war about irreconcilable differences or mutually exclusive goals, the only reason for any conflict whatsoever as far as the game has shown us is that the guy in charge of Nohr is a sociopath who threatens to kill his own children at the drop of a hat. Sure, they probably won’t hold hands singing kumbaya after one extended conversation with eachother, but when all of them are in a truce far away from Garon’s authority having a meal together, nothing significant comes out of it plot-wise?
In fact, at the end of the day what significance happened here at all?
If there’s no juicy character interactions or exploration, and no setting up future events, then presumably the point of this big moment of Corrin and Xander leaping to save their enemies was made to show off that despite working in the same army, our heroes are indeed better than the swarms of war criminals under Nohr’s name we’ve seen and would never tolerate such things under normal circumstances. They’ve talked the talk about disagreeing with their father’s cruel methods, now here’s proof they’ll walk the walk, aren’t they such noble people? The way this is done however, opens up another can of worms…
-Problem 3: Protags come off as dicks
While our heroes are indeed more likeable and moral than blatant monsters like Garon and Hans, liking peace and disliking war crimes is not enough of a reason for a pat on the back. Our protags might not be burning villages for fun, but it’s difficult to take their proclaimed goal of peace seriously considering both the context of working for people who DO burn villages for fun and they way they handle themselves when presented with an opportunity to work on this supposed goal.
Corrin and Azura
Azura in particular is problematic here. During Odovakar 's excellent overview of the problems with Fates writing, he goes into detail about how Azura’s line about “this is all quite heartwarming. We're like one big family...albeit, a dysfunctional one.” in particular comes off as incredibly tone deaf and tasteless given the circumstances of Azura and Corrin marching on one family’s homeland for the sake of the other family. What I think was also worth noting is the context leading up to that line…
Sakura: I was just, um...th-thinking...it's really nice to finally see you again. I'm glad you... I'm glad you f-found a way to be happy... Corrin: Sakura... I'm happy to see you too. Sakura: R-really? You mean it?! Oh, Corrin! Elise: HMPH! Back off, you! He/She's my brothesister! MINE! Sakura: Ah! I'm s-sorry! Corrin: Elise! Mind your manners, little one. Elise: But she's trying to take you away from me... She's my archnemesis
Whether intentional or not, this is actually a very clever microcosm of the family’s conflict acted out by the youngest and most innocent among them who probably weren’t even born when the conflict started. The Hoshidan loves their sibling, but their time with Corrin is interrupted by the Nohrian shoving them away and declaring Corrin for themselves. This is a great way to challenge our protags to some introspection about themselves.
Azura: Heehee! Corrin: Azura? Did you just...giggle?
Instead, Azura just finds this a real knee-slapper. I understand maybe this is just meant to be a cute image of imoutos fighting over oni-chan Corrin and nothing more, but the context makes it very hard to swallow the narrative’s insistence that all this is “heartwarming” as Azura puts it. Keep in mind that all the Hoshidan nobles are sitting at the same table watching all this. Do you think Ryoma also finds it funny that his little sister is scared off and declared an archnemesis by the daughter of the man who killed his father in cold blood? Do you think Hinoka also thinks it's like one big dysfunctional family when Corrin is preparing to march on her homeland with an army?
I get it, I totally know what they were going for, and in a vacuum it could be a great line making for a properly bittersweet moment. “Even if the two are at eachothers throats and the future is bleak, me and Azura are grateful we get to have at least one big normal dinner together like a real family.”
But the future is bleak because of Corrin and Azura participating in an invasion, the families are at eachothers throats partially because Corrin and Azura haven’t accomplished anything to reform Nohr. If anything, Corrin should feel great shame here. Elise just unintentionally reenacted the history between the nations where Nohr was clearly in the wrong, and Corrin is sitting directly across and staring at the family who’ve done nothing wrong to him yet are going to be hurt because of Corrin’s decision. Grateful they could spend time with them again? Maybe. But cheerful and laughing?
ProZD: D-did an alien write this game? blows gently
But at least Corrin doesn’t show outright contempt for the family they’re screwing over…
Xander and Leo
Xander: Corrin! There's no need to insult me like that. I could not possibly be anything like this sorry excuse for a prince. … Xander: We will win with honor or die trying. Come, Corrin. Let us go set free our sworn enemy. … Corrin: Heh, sorry... It's just that you and Ryoma really are so much alike. If you weren't on opposite sides of a war, I think you could have been great friends. Xander: Yeesh... Do me a favor and keep that nonsense in your head where it belongs. … Xander (to Ryoma): We only acted as Nohrian royals should. When we leave this place, you'll be nothing but an enemy to be defeated once more.
Okay, but why? Ryoma is not the one Xander overheard laughing to himself about how much he’s going to make Corrin suffer. How are the Hoshidan royals “nothing but enemies to be defeated” here when they’re just trying to defend their homeland from somebody who assassinated their king at a peace meeting? Where is all this contempt from Xander coming from?
It’s perfectly understandable he doesn’t get along super well with Ryoma because of the tensions between their nations, that makes sense, but I see no reason for why Xander is making several petty insults to his face unprompted, let alone so nonchalant and even somewhat eager to get back to waging a war Xander himself calls “a senseless war of greed and madness” in the epilogue.
He doesn’t treat his own people much better this chapter, declaring Zola and his henchmen as “traitors” to be “dealt with” for their dishonorable methods when ironically Zola taking over the country by disguising himself as the archduke is actually one of the least evil and self-destructive things we’ve seen the kingdom do so far. It must be emphasized that every sibling was in the same room watching Garon demand Xander kill Corrin if he interferes with killing POWs for his amusement, and half of them were in the same room when Garon ordered his henchmen to murder every singer they can find in a neutral country. So a few hundred or thousand innocent people, most of whom would presumably be young woman, murdered to snuff out potential assassins. Or Garon directly ordering the deaths of unarmed civilians in chapter 13 with Hans relaying “Villagers are just soldiers who haven’t picked up a sword yet.”
Xander talks a big game in this chapter about how “we’ll win this war with honor or die trying”, but how do you honorably win a war when your nation is constantly and openly rushing to pointless overkill brutality like this at every turn? What moral high ground does this country have that Xander is so determined to preserve he kills loyal soldiers over what he sees as sullying it, when at no point in the game does the influence of Nohr ever do anything but make life significantly worse? His sudden fervor towards doing the right thing is completely contrasted later on when Xander is the one telling Corrin there’s no justice to be found in war and you just gotta do what you gotta do rather than what’s morally right, in response to Corrin being upset the Nohrian army is killing woman and children who looked at them funny.
“Justice is an illusion, a fairy tale…Letting innocents die is a tragedy, but so is letting the chance for peace slip away. This is war. There is no such thing as a clean win when lives are on the line.”
“Justice is just a fairy tale, innocent people getting screwed over is something we have to accept in war because there’s no such thing as a clean win! But also we better win this senseless war of greed and madness with honor or die trying!”
I understand one might get the impression I’m going off topic or selectively picking and choosing quotes here from all over the game, but no matter how you look at it Xanders beliefs, morality, and priorities are just all over the place depending on what the plot needs him to do. This means not only is his motivation for helping his enemies here faulty no matter how you look at it, but it also makes the extreme lengths he goes to do so, killing his own subjects who won him victory on a silver platter because it wasn’t a “proper” victory, come off as baselessly self-righteous at best and outright cruel at worst.
I’m sure the game would assure us Zola and all his mooks are terrible people who had it coming, but the issue is no matter how virtuous you portray Xander and creepy you portray Zola, Xander is still directly managing the war for a megalomaniac and helping him achieve his goals in spite of his long history of open sadism and public crimes that make Zola look like a saint. By ignoring the clear root cause of Nohr's dishonor while going this hard against random goon's participating in dishonor, instead of being a gallant preserver of morals, he comes off like a bully who selectively picks and choices punishment.
On the topic of punishment, it particularly rubs me the wrong way how Leo just casually mercs Zola at the end, keep in mind Birthright confirms for all his faults he actually isn’t a complete monster like Garon and dies trying to help the protag.
Leo (smiling portrait): You’d probably rather die than live with the shame, correct? In that case…
Zola: Eek! No, please! M-m-milord... I was wrong! S-so wrong! I have seen the error of my ways! P-please...spare my unworthy life!!
Leo (still smiling): Make peace with it, Zola. Perhaps on the other side you will find forgiveness.
Leo makes a fair argument that the stakes are too high and Zola can’t be trusted not to snitch, but this is bit sadistic, no? One of the most powerful people in the country is smug and sarcastic as he’s getting ready to execute somebody whose bleeding on the ground begging for his life and genuinely confused as to why we’re upset with him. I know the intent of “I was wrong! I have the seen the error of my ways!” is supposed to be him saying whatever Leo wants to hear to weasel out of punishment, but that’s exactly the thing, he’s fully cooperating and doing everything he can to appease this guy. And then he’s just killed like a dog without trial or final words, presumably using the spell that skewers you with tree branches.
Didn’t the game use killing defeated foes like this to establish Garon as a bloodthirsty monster? Why is Corrin just standing there watching this happen? This exact same scenario in Birthright has them jump to spare Zola, but here their disapproval is very meek and only voiced after the deed is already done. It’s still apparently too much for Leo though, who chastises Corrin for being “too soft…I envy your innocence.” And then he declares the matter settled on their behalf.
I’m sure this scene was meant to show off Leo’s pragmatism and strategy skills, but it just makes him look like a sociopath and Corrin look spineless. And that’s the biggest issue with this chapter to me, more than the plot being driven by contrivances that aren’t explained or the lack of any character development or interesting scenes taking advantage of the setup, the actions and dialog of our protags don’t match the noble heroes the narrative insists they are:
These are not the actions of heroic characters.
Summary: Overall, this is a very bizarre chapter. It feels like something meaningful happens here at first glance, your brain sees what’s going on and knows that this is supposed to be a huge moment. Peaceful music playing, a very well-drawn CG of dozens of individual units, liberating a country from Nohrian control, Corrin and Azura are happy and say some lines that sound like they should be deep and impactful.
But when you step back and analyze the bigger picture and context, you find that more or less embodies all of Fates writing, both good and bad. It has a brilliant premise that gets your mind going, excellent presentation to accompany it, and some individual scenes or dialogue in a vacuum are very welcome. If you’re a casual player who just wants context for your favorite characters fighting, it’s easy to feel satisfied at first glance and move on thanks to those factors, especially since the gameplay and MyCastle are very fun. At the same time, there’s no denying the severe flaws that hamper the experience.
Despite being the hyped-up main draw of the chapter, our exciting premise that opens so many doors is almost completely neglected in favor of (once again) exposition on meaningless settings and characters that aren’t relevant anywhere else and also reminding us how evil Nohr is, to the point the chapter title is Black and White. The context makes it very difficult to take the plight of our heroes seriously due to their lack of action (both before and in the present) to achieve their proclaimed goal despite ample opportunity, the proaction they do have being unnecessarily extreme and self-serving, and a narrative that insists they are in the right at every turn despite the results clearly showing us otherwise. There’s definitely bits and pieces of something great buried in all this teasing us, otherwise I wouldn’t be interested enough to write this much all these years later, but as is it’s just a mess. An enjoyable mess, but a mess all the same.

But what do you guys think of Conquest Chapter 18: Black and White? Do you also consider it a wreck, or was there something positive here you believed I missed? What would you like to see in a potential rewrite of it?

2024.05.15 01:08 Impossible_Tip_1269 Banned from a medspa

Need feedback.. I am apparently banned from a medspa.. I have been going to for about a year & have had many expensive treatments.. the last one in question was the most expensive $2500.. We had a consult & because its a Procedure i haven”t had before had her write me a script for valiuum to have just in case it was too painful which ive done at other medspa”s with no issue, in fact they encouraged it… Well the day came & she gave me 6 of the most painful shots Ive ever experienced in my life.. I was litterally screaming & the procedure had not even begun… there was zero empathy shown to my discomfort more like angry that i dared to feel pain.. everyone has a different Pain tolerance…more of a feeling like let”s just get on with it i have other patients.. felt like an assembly line…so she started the Procedure & even with the numbing certain areas felt like my skin was being carved off.. so I had to stop & take the valuum which enraged her & she said now it will take 25 min to kick in to which i said no it will take 5 min which it did.. I even apologized profusely which I seriously regret..& I was met with stone silence… anyway we continued on 5 minutes later no more issues the valium kicked in & we finished.. now Im banned … I am not seeing something.. I know she is on a schedule but I had discussed this ahead of time & told her this is what i would do .. so confused & really beating myself up over it.. i do like the result i should add.. but I felt bullied & it was such a mean girl vibe.. Please be kind as I already feel bad enough..

2024.05.14 23:38 Heavy-Sleep-8304 I'm worried about my friend. Please help.

Hello. Please keep in mind this is a throwaway. My friend is on Reddit but I am praying he won't see this. Anyways, I thought this might be the best place to put this. If not, it's ok. I'll put this somewhere else.
I am very concerned about my friend.. let's call him "Gem". He's a 16yo trans male, and from what I know about his past, he's been bullied a whole lot, ever since kindergarten, from what I know. In our school that we're at now, he gets bullied constantly, yet he is the therapist friend (Which from what I know, has been a thing for a LONG time. Since he was 13, I think?) . If we're having issues, he'll immediately text us. He will quite literally drop everything to help anybody in our friend group and out. Whenever we thank him, he just says "It's what I'm here for." He is also a content creator and he overworks himself constantly and makes a TON of stuff without taking breaks. He's also making a movie and stuff like that, but he's been doing this for a while so I'm worried he's getting too worn out and working himself too hard.
Just recently, he's started going quiet, and bringing a small plush to school, which he calls his "Anxiety Buddy". The quiet part is totally unlike him, because he's usually very talkative, and kind to everyone, no matter what they've done to him. But he's just- gone quiet. He will wave and talk sometimes, but most of the time he hugs his little anxiety buddy or writes in his script book and just looks honestly depressed, and I'm getting really worried about him. Is he getting depressed/possibly more depressed?? What does this mean, and what can I do to help him??

2024.05.14 16:30 kingOfMars16 ‘No easy answers’: LDS parents wonder if early morning seminary is worth the risks to teens’ health

https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2024/05/14/no-easy-answers-lds-parents-wonder
Might be behind a paywall, I have JavaScript turned off on the page so I can read it anyway 😅 I'll put up some quotes and give a tl dr: basically tons of research shows that waking up early as a teen is extremely bad for your mental health, but the church doesn't care.
A mounting body of evidence indicates that teens not only need more sleep than adults but also that hormonal shifts make it harder for them to go to bed before 10 or 11p.m. At the same time, researchers have gained a clearer picture of the risks associated with teenage sleep deprivation, among them serious mental health issues and substance abuse.
Tired teens, recent studies have discovered, are more prone to major depression and risky behavior, including drug experimentation. One study, published in 2023, found that sleep-deprived adolescents were about twice as prone to suicide ideation and consideration, even when adjusting for sexual identity, trauma, bullying and other related factors. Another, published the year before, suggested a possible link between poor adolescent sleep and an increased risk of schizophrenia.
The church won't make any changes, and the parents and kids are brainwashed into thinking it's worth the "sacrifice". They have other options, like online or late night classes, but since they're not the norm kids and parents still feel the pressure to keep the status quo and do regular seminary. It's a classic "cultural" problem where the church refuses to acknowledge the influence it has on the problems it causes.
My two cents: I definitely don't have any lasting sleep disorders exacerbated by seminary /s 🙄 Jazz band at my high school was before school, my freshman year I just went to seminary instead, but then we tried having seminary just for a handful of band kids after school. For whatever reason by my junior year we switched to extra early seminary at 5:45am (I know a ton of people that had it that early as well in other districts and states). I slept through every class that wasn't active (like band or drafting) every single day of that year and the next. I even had to drop out of honors pre-calculus because I just couldn't stay awake.
The kids in most classes referred to me as "that sleeping kid". Though to be fair it was pretty funny when I got the second highest score on the practice AP physics test and the guy who sits next to me was like "what?? He's asleep ALL THE TIME" (I didn't do as well on the actual test though 😅).
And now in my thirties it's almost impossible to even get out of bed without Adderall or a large amount of caffeine, and it's impossible to get to sleep without Ambien or a large amount of weed (and yes, that includes days where I didn't take stimulants, and vice versa). This research on how much sleep teens actually need is almost a decade old, and some high schools have even pushed back their start times because of it (and consequently saw a noticeable bump in their test scores). And the church still won't address this issue that's actually harming kids. They either don't care about the kids outside of Utah or really appreciate how much easier brainwashing is when you're sleep deprived.

2024.05.13 02:37 edgiscript [F4M] Lilly's Saga - Part 7 of 7 [Happy Birthday] [Reminiscing] [Nearly A Year Together Post-Yandere]

Note: Here it is one more time: An Introduction To The Book That Is Me : ASMRScriptHaven (reddit.com)
Note: But here are a few extras this time. If you are interested in doing this series in its entirety, you do not have to do "Coma" as part of it. That's a spin-off. You absolutely can, but it is not a requirement to make the series make sense. I included it as part of this series for your reading enjoyment. Likewise, "Coma" can be done as its own thing if you want. You don't have to do the rest of the series to make it work.
Also, I've been contacted by a few people to say that they'd like to do just one-offs from pieces of these, but not do the whole series. Absolutely. Feel free. Do only part 2 or part 6 or parts 3 and 5 only, or whatever you want. For the most part, I think each chapter can work on its own. If you want to do that but feel that a little tweaking is necessary to make that work, go right ahead.

And we're off. Here's the final piece.
------------------------------------

Part 7

Lilly: Hey, you’re finally awake.
(Singsong voice.) Good morrrrrrning. (Giggles.) How are you doing?
(Pause.)
(Speaking like everything’s the usual boring thing until told otherwise. She knows the explosion is coming and she's reigning it in right now.)
Fine? Good. That’s good.
(Pause.)
Me? I’m fine. Yeah. Fine.
(Pause.)
How long have I been sitting here? Oh, you know, just a few minutes. I think. Maybe longer. I’m not sure, to tell you the truth. You know I used to dream about this day; watching you while you sleep, but then you wake up and smile at me.
(Pause.)
Why have I been sitting here now watching your adorable face as you sleep? Well, I suppose it’s so as soon as you woke up I could say
(Explosively happy.) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
(Squeals and embraces listener.) Come here, you.
(Several kisses.)
And I always miss that spot on your ear somehow. (Giggles. Kiss.)
I love you so much, babe. I just wanted to be here when you woke up so I could tell you that. This is your day and I wanted it to be wonderful from your first moment.
We’ve been a couple for nearly a year, and it has been the most amazingly romantic, most wondrous year I’ve ever experienced. My love, you are the most loving, caring, perfect person a girl could ever hope for.
(Pause.)
(Chastising the listener.) Ah, ah, ahhhh. One, yes you are perfect so don’t contradict me. And two, shut up. It’s your birthday so only I get to tell you how great you are.
(Pause.)
(Giggles.) Yes, those are the birthday rules, now shut up.
(Becomes lovingly serious.)
Babe, I know I tell you every day that I love you, but… I love you.
I love you so much. I meant it when I said you’re the most loving, caring person I could have ever hoped for. From the first time you rescued me from those bullies, to last week when you took me on that walking tour of all of the chocolatiers in the area because of a casual comment I made about how chocolate is my favorite thing next to you, you have always been there for me.
And yes, before you say that you haven’t always been there for me, I know we both had a rough go of it for a while there, but that only serves to prove my point. It was your love that got me out of my darkness, and my love that got you out of yours.
Remember that dream you told me about that you had when I had drugged you and brought you here the first time? The one about me rescuing you from your fears? That let me know that you were already aware that I loved you and you were even letting me love you in your mind, your heart, and your soul.
You being there for me means also that you allow me to be there for you. The fact that you let me love you then and that you continue to let me love you now is another piece of the puzzle that reveals how wonderful you truly are. I know because you’ve done nothing but make sure I know every minute of every day that this is all about us; not me, not you, US, together. You don’t just love me unreservedly, you let me do the same for you. I love the fact that you let me love you as much as you love me.
(More romantically blissful in the remembrance now.)
You’re the one who took me to my mother’s grave and then sat down with me and told her just how special I was and how much you were going to look after me. And then you graciously let me find your parents’ gravesite and allowed me to do the same for you.
You let me pause my video game every time you enter the room so I can give you a kiss and let you snuggle in next to me before I keep playing. I know it sounds kind of trivial, but it means so much to me that you don’t tell me I don’t have to do that and that I should just keep playing. You happily accept that seemingly small token of my love for you and by doing that you make me feel loved in return.
You cry at every single movie we watch.
(Pause.)
Ok, yes, you didn’t cry during Airplane. That would have been weird. Also, I told you to shut up, so shut up. (Giggles.)
But I love it that you feel safe enough with me to do that. Do you know how endearing it was when I got to hold your face to my chest and stroke your hair while you cried at Marley and Me? And, yes, I cried too, but my point still stands.
There are a thousand little things I could say that would all testify as to how perfect you are for me, but the one that means the most is the fact that you’re there. You’re there when I wake up every morning. You’re there when I go to bed every night. You’re there when it’s easy and you’re there when it’s difficult, and I know that you’re not going anywhere. You’ll always be there.
When I first brought you here all tied up, I had trouble for a while finally letting you go completely, and you helped me through that as well. You broke through my fear of losing you by always being there. I have known for a long time now that you always will be with me.
(Pause.)
No, sweetie, I haven’t relapsed at all. I love you and I trust you. I know that you love me too and you’ll always be there for me.
(Pause.)
Then why are you tied down to the bed right now.
(Seductively.) Why, babe, I believe I already answered that one when I told you… Happy birthday.
(Giggles.)
(Kiss.)

2024.05.12 21:20 a_worldwithoutshrimp Not sure how much I can watch

I’ve tried so hard to keep watching but the writing and production has started to impact my enjoyment of the show so much. As a teen who was bullied from 12-16 Liam’s story rings so true to me, including the suicide attempt (for me it was plural - not saying that for sympathy, just fact). Aside from Paul’s MND storyline (which I wish feels rushed) everything else is a nonsense, unnaturally acted and scripted, and I cannot bear the sound and visual effects that are being employed. This is not the Corrie that I grew up with (I’m 46 nearing 47) and I watch out of loyalty and because my late mum would want me to, but it’s getting so bad. It makes me sad.
Edit: I put a comment replying to the post but to the person who commented and then deleted: it was tough but I’m doing ok now ❤️. If you’re going through something similar - or if you have - you can get through this. I have bad memories that hurt but my good ones outweigh those now.

2024.05.12 17:48 VariationVegetable82 Should I ask my mom to get diagnosed for Autism if yes how?

I made a new account for this lol and I am not sure if this is breaking the rules but for the last year I've been questioning if I have autism. I never thought about the possibility until I became friends with two people with diagnosed autism. Both were surprised when I said I'm not autistic because they said my behaviour is similar to them, but that also might be because I just copy everyone else so I seem less weird. My therapist also says I am exhibiting a lot of traits of autism and every time I see a meme about autism I usually relate to it on a spiritual level.
So why I think I might be autistic? Mainly because of struggles in socializing, repetitive behaviours, intense interests since I was a child but I often copy others around me, script conversations in my head, practice conversations with Ai bots so I'm not called weird because I would get called weird as a child a lot and I was even bullied. I hate making eye contact and talking, but I've learned how to force myself to because as a child I would often be told “look at me when I'm talking” or that “not talking is disrespectful”. Sometimes in public I get really excited when someone mentions an interest Im really passionate about so I feel overwhelmed by energy and I just want to flap my hands and jump around but I can't because I might be called weird and when I don't it feels like I'm holding in a sneeze it's a terrible feeling.
Here is some more:
Why I might not be autistic
I know some of these behaviours are normal but I have been looking into something called autistic burnout and I feel like I'm going through that right now. This week has been very stressful and I hate pretending to be like everyone else and people STILL think I'm weird so I've gotten very stressed and I can't do my homework or get out of bed I can't even do research on the interests I love or draw and I can't physically talk either. This has happened a few times before but I have school tomorrow and I know my mom will force me to go to school but I can't talk and everyone will think I'm even weirder and ignore me. If I get a diagnosis I might be able to get treatment that will help me with this behaviour and prevent it from happening again.
So should I ask my mom if I can get diagnosed (it is free where I live bc I'm a minor) and if yes how? Shes kind of ableist because she has called me autistic as an insult before but she might be able to understand. Sorry for the long post 😭

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Wes Craven's turn.
Craven earned a master's degree in philosophy and writing from Johns Hopkins University. He subsequently bought a 16mm film camera and began making short movies. His friend Steve Chapin informed him of a messenger position at a New York City film production co, where his brother, future folk-rock star Harry Chapin worked. He started in the industry as a sound editor, before transitioning as a porn director. He said he made "many hardcore X-rated films" under pseudonyms. And then he transitioned into directing for the big screen.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

The Last House on the Left (1972)

"Mari, seventeen, is dying. Even for her, the worst is yet to come."
His directorial debut. The film stars Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham, David Hess, Fred J. Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, and Marc Sheffler. The plot follows Mari Collingwood, a teenager who is abducted, raped, and tortured by a family of violent fugitives led by Krug Stillo on her seventeenth birthday. When her parents discover what happened to her, they seek vengeance against the family, who have taken shelter at their home.
Craven, who had no money at the time, was put on the job of synchronizing dailies for Sean S. Cunningham's Together. They became friends, and Hallmark Releasing gave them $90,000 to make another film. Craven considered a hardcore film, but decided to tone it down a bit. The idea for this film came from Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring, and Craven wanted to make a film in which the violence would be shown in detail onscreen, as he felt that many popular films of the era, such as Westerns, glamorized violence and the "vigilante hero", and gave the public a misleading representation of death in the wake of the Vietnam War.
The film attracted negative media attention for its heavy graphic content, and there were calls for some theaters to drop the film. But you know, bad buzz is still buzz and that translated to a pretty good run in theaters, earning up to $3 million in its initial run. Even to this day, the film is polarizing due to its violence and themes. But Craven just made his name well known.
  • Budget: $90,000.
  • Domestic gross: $3,100,000. ($23.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $3,100,000.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

"A nice American family. They didn't want to kill. But they didn't want to die."
His second film. The film stars Susan Lanier, Michael Berryman and Dee Wallace. The film follows the Carters, a suburban family targeted by a family of cannibal savages after becoming stranded in the Nevada desert.
Craven wanted to make a non-horror, but he found that his investors only wanted films with graphic content. At the New York Public Library, Craven checked the library's forensics department, and learned of the legend of Sawney Bean - the alleged head of a 48-person Scottish clan responsible for the murder and cannibalization of more than one thousand people. He drew influences from this, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Grapes of Wrath. Craven also had to cut a lot of scenes to avoid getting an X rating.
The film once again drew negative attention for its violence. But it made over $25 million at the box office, which was an even bigger success than House. It subsequently earned a cult following.
  • Budget: $700,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,000,000. ($128.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $25,000,000.

Deadly Blessing (1981)

"Pray you're not blessed."
His third film. It stars Ernest Borgnine, Maren Jensen, Susan Buckner, and Sharon Stone, and tells the story of a strange figure committing murder in a contemporary community that is not far from another community that believes in ancient evil and curses.
It received negative reviews, but it was another box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,279,042. ($28.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,279,042.

Swamp Thing (1982)

"Science transformed him into a monster. Love changed him even more!"
His fourth film. Based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, it stars Louis Jourdan and Adrienne Barbeau. It tells the story of scientist Alec Holland who is transformed into the monster known as Swamp Thing through laboratory sabotage orchestrated by the evil Anton Arcane. Later, he helps a woman named Alice Cable and battles the man responsible for it all, the ruthless Arcane.
The film made $2.5 million domestically, despite mixed reviews.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $2,500,000. ($8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,500,000.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

"If Nancy doesn't wake up screaming, she won't wake up at all."
His fifth film. It stars Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Johnny Depp, and Robert Englund. The film's plot concerns a group of teenagers who are targeted by Freddy Krueger, an undead child killer who can murder people through their dreams, as retribution against their parents who burned him alive.
The film was inspired by several newspaper articles printed in the Los Angeles Times in the 1970s about Hmong refugees, who, after fleeing to the United States because of war and genocide in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, suffered disturbing nightmares and refused to sleep. Some of the men died in their sleep soon after. This, along with the song "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright, motivated Craven to craft a horror film focused on people dying through their sleep.
The film's villain, Freddy Krueger, is drawn from Craven's early life. One night, a young Craven saw an elderly man walking on the sidepath outside the window of his home. The man stopped to glance at a startled Craven and walked off. This served as the inspiration for Krueger. Initially, Fred Krueger was intended to be a child molester, but Craven eventually characterized him as a child murderer to avoid being accused of exploiting a spate of highly publicized child molestation cases that occurred in California around the time of the film's production. He settled on the name Freddy Krueger, which was based on a childhood bully of his.
The process of writing the film went smoothly, the real problem was finding a studio. Craven sent it to most studios, and all rejected it. The first studio to show interest was Disney, but Craven declined their offer as they wanted a more toned-down kid-friendly PG-13 flick. When Paramount and Universal also turned it down, Craven decided to go to the independent studio New Line Cinema. The studio only distributed films, but they agreed in financing the film. As they lacked the financial resources for the production, New Line had to turn to external financiers.
Despite opening in just 165 theaters, the film earned $1.2 million in its opening weekend, making it clear that it would be an immediate box office success. It eventually closed with $25 million domestically, and $57 million worldwide. It received critical acclaim, and has been referred as one of the best and most influential slashers ever made. Freddy Krueger would soon be hailed as one of the most emblematic figures of horror, and Craven quickly earned a reputation as a horror legend. But most importantly, it was the beginning of New Line Cinema as a studio, which is why it's referred as "the house that Freddy built."
The film would later spawn a franchise, although Craven wouldn't direct any of the "sequels." Why the quotation marks? We'll get to that later on.
  • Budget: $1,100,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,624,448. ($77 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $57,185,134.

The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1985)

"So you think you're lucky to be alive."
His sixth film. The sequel to The Hills Have Eyes, it stars Tamara Stafford, Kevin Spirtas, John Bloom, Michael Berryman, Penny Johnson, Janus Blythe, John Laughlin, Willard E. Pugh, Peter Frechette and Robert Houston. It follows a group of bikers who become stranded in the desert and find themselves fighting off a family of inbred cannibals who live off the land.
The film was shot on a very low budget, and it simply ended prematurely because they ran out of funds. There are no box office numbers available, but it received awful reviews.

Deadly Friend (1986)

"There's no one alive who'll play with the girl next door."
His seventh film. Based on the novel Friend by Diana Henstell, it stars Matthew Laborteaux, Kristy Swanson, Michael Sharrett, Anne Twomey, Richard Marcus, and Anne Ramsey. Its plot follows a teenage computer prodigy who implants a robot's processor into the brain of his teenage neighbor after she is pronounced brain dead; the experiment proves successful, but she swiftly begins a killing spree in their neighborhood.
Craven wanted to make a PG-rated science fiction film, with a similar tone to Starman, hoping to prove that he could make something that wasn't horror-themed. An unfinished version of the film was screened to a test audience of Craven's fanbase, and it was poorly received for its lack of violence and gore like his previous films. So WB decided to rewrite the film, adding more scenes with tons of gore. This made the final film appear tonally jumbled, and it went from easy PG to struggling to not get an X rating.
The film was poorly received for its story and inconsistent tone. It also marked a huge flop at the box office, not even hitting $10 million. Craven lost interest in the film after WB inserted their own version, and he has since disowned the film.
  • Budget: $11,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,988,731. ($25.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,988,731.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

"Don't bury me, I'm not dead!"
His eighth film. It stars Bill Pullman, and is loosely based on the life of ethnobotanist Wade Davis, recounting his experiences in Haiti investigating the story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was allegedly poisoned, buried alive, and revived with a herbal brew which produced what was called a zombie.
The film received mixed reactions, but it was a much needed box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $7,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,595,031. ($51.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,595,031.

Shocker (1989)

"No more Mr. Nice Guy."
His ninth film. It stars Michael Murphy, Peter Berg, Cami Cooper, and Mitch Pileggi, and follows a serial killer who uses electricity to come back from the dead and carry out his vengeance on the football player who turned him in to the police.
Another mixed bag for Craven, but it was still profitable.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $16,554,699. ($41.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,554,699.

The People Under the Stairs (1991)

"In every neighborhood, there's one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid."
His tenth film. It stars Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, and A. J. Langer. The plot follows a young boy and two adult robbers who become trapped in a house belonging to a neighborhood's crooked landlords after breaking in to steal their collection of gold coins as the boy learns a dark secret about them and what also lurks in their house.
After a slate of mixed performers, the film received Craven's best reviews since Elm Street. To the surprise of Universal, it was also a box office success.
  • Budget: $6,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $24,204,154. ($55.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,347,154.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

"This time, the terror doesn't stop at the screen."
His 11th film. The installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, it stars Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Miko Hughes and John Saxon. The film is not part of the same continuity as previous films, and it portrays Freddy Krueger as a fictional movie villain who invades the real world and haunts the cast and crew involved in the making of the films about him.
While Craven co-wrote the franchise's third installment, Dream Warriors, he wasn't that involved with the rest of the franchise. He wanted to make a deliberately more cerebral film than recent entries to the franchise, as he considered them as being cartoonish, and not faithful to his original themes. Specifically, he wanted Freddy to resemble his original vision: far darker and less comical. To reinforce this, the character's make-up and outfit were enhanced, with one of the most prominent differences being that he now wears a long blue/black trenchcoat. In addition, the signature glove was redesigned for a more organic look, with the fingers resembling bones and having muscle textures in between.
The film received high praise, and was considered as the best film in the franchise since the original (it was Englund's favorite). But the franchise has been bleeding interest at the box office, and New Nightmare unfortunately had to suffer. It was profitable, but it became the lowest grossing film in the franchise.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $18,090,181. ($38.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,721,741.

Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)

"A comic tale of horror and seduction."
His 12th film. It stars Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Allen Payne, Kadeem Hardison, John Witherspoon, Zakes Mokae, and Joanna Cassidy. It follows a Caribbean vampire who seduces a Brooklyn police officer who has no idea that she is half-vampire.
The film had awful reviews, and despite the presence of a huge star like Eddie Murphy, it disappointed at the box office. Craven really needed a hit.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,751,736. ($40.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $34,951,736.

Scream (1996)

"Someone has taken their love of scary movies one step too far."
His 13th film. It stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich and Drew Barrymore. Set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, Scream's plot follows high school student Sidney Prescott and her friends, who, on the anniversary of her mother's murder, become the targets of a costumed serial killer known as Ghostface.
As he was trying to make it in the industry, Kevin Williamson watched a Turning Point documentary about serial killer Danny Rolling which he said left him unsettled. Williamson later noticed an open window, armed himself with a knife, and called his friend for support. The pair began discussing horror characters that had resonated with them such as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. This experience prompted Williamson to start developing a concept wherein a girl is haunted by a caller.
He started writing a film titled Scary Movie, and even left an outline for possible sequels. The concept was part of an era where there was debate over the influence of cinematic violence on audience, with Williamson coming up with a brilliant line "movies don't create psychos, movies make psychos more creative." It was inspired by many 1980s slashers, even though the genre was on decline by that point. His characters were intentionally designed to be knowledgeable about these horror films and their typical elements, with the intention of creating a unique killer who was not only aware of horror film clichés but also exploited them for his own advantage.
While Williamson struggled with his previous films, this script was part of a bidding war with the studios, to the point that Oliver Stone himself wanted to direct it. Miramax (through Dimension Films) bought the script, and Williamson made some rewrites to scale back the violence. Bob Weinstein also wanted to change the name, as he believed the audiences would think the film is a comedy.
The studio considered Danny Boyle, Tom McLoughlin, Sam Raimi, Robert Rodriguez, George A. Romero, Quentin Tarantino, and Anthony Waller as prime candidates to direct the film, but they all preferred to view the film as a comedy. Wes Craven was considered, but the studio believed he couldn't direct a satire. Craven also wasn't planning on directing it, as he wanted to focus on more mainstream films to salvage his career. Craven's assistant Julie Plec (who would collaborate with Williamson on The Vampire Diaries) convinced him in helming the project. By signing, Craven decided to get back some of the gore that was missing in the previous drafts.
A huge contrast to the horror films of the era was that the film had established actors as the leads, as Craven and Williamson wanted to prove that no character was safe. Drew Barrymore had already starred in a few recognizable names, Neve Campbell was on the hit show Party of Five, Rose McGowan was known for Encino Man and The Doom Generation, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich were recognizable supporting characters, and Courteney Cox obviously was known for Friends. Vince Vaughn and Natasha Lyonne were the preferred choices for Billy and Tatum, but external problems caused them to drop out.
After viewing the dailies raw footage, the Weinsteins criticized the quality of Craven's work as "workmanlike at best", believing it lacked tension and had an inconsistent tone. The Weinsteins also disliked the mask design, and said Barrymore lacked sex appeal because of the pageboy hairstyle she had chosen. While filming the final fight, Campbell's stuntwoman accidentally stabbed Ulrich with an umbrella tip, missing the protective vest he was wearing and hitting the site of an open heart surgery Ulrich had as a child. During post-production, Harvey Weinstein decided to name the film as Scream based on the Michael and Janet Jackson song.
In a surprising move, the Weinsteins decided to release the film during the holiday season as counter-programming, offering teenagers an alternative to more traditional holiday fare. The decision was unpopular with the cast and crew, with Williamson expecting the film to fail. The film opened with $6.4 million and finishing in fourth place, leading analysts to consider the film as a bomb.
But the film just kept growing.
Buoyed by positive word of mouth, the Weinsteins increased marketing and the film managed to increase in its second and third weekends. It closed with $103 million domestically and $173 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing slasher film ever and Craven's highest grossing film ever. The film received critical acclaim for its characters and writing, and has since been deemed as one of the most influential horror films of all time. It rekindled interest in horror, resurrected Craven's career and launched the careers of Williamson and the cast.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $103,046,663. ($245.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $173,046,663.

Scream 2 (1997)

"Someone has taken their love of sequels one step too far."
His 14th film. The sequel to Scream, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jamie Kennedy, Laurie Metcalf, Jerry O'Connell, Elise Neal, Timothy Olyphant, Jada Pinkett, and Liev Schreiber. The film takes place two years after the first film and again follows the character of Sidney Prescott, along with other survivors of the Woodsboro massacre, at the fictional Windsor College in Ohio where they are targeted by a copycat killer using the guise of Ghostface.
As Williamson already had plans for sequels, the idea was for Sidney to attend college while being stalked by a copycat Ghostface killer. As filming began, Williamson's script had four killers: Derek, Hallie, Cotton Weary, and Nancy Loomis. But after Williamson transferred his script to the production, it was leaked onto the Internet in full, revealing the identity of the killers and a large amount of the involved plot. This resulted in the production continuing to film with only a partial script while Williamson conducted extensive rewrites, changing much of the film's finale, the identities of the film's killers and drastically altering the roles of other characters such as Randy Meeks and Joel. With a short deadline, Williamson couldn't fully compromise on the final script, forcing Craven to fill in the gaps himself. So the film was one of the very first cases where the Internet leaked major aspects of a film.
As the Weinsteins wanted the film ready for December, it was able to capitalize on the audience's word of mouth to the original. It opened with $32 million in its first weekend, almost five times as big as the original, and the biggest December debut. It didn't hold as great as the original due to the competition, such as Titanic, but it still made $172.3 million worldwide, almost matching the original's gross. It also received very positive reviews, and so a profitable franchise was already underway.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,363,301. ($237.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $172,363,301.

Music of the Heart (1999)

"She gave them a gift they could never imagine. They gave the system a fight it would never forget."
His 15th film. The film stars Meryl Streep, Aidan Quinn, Angela Bassett, Gloria Estefan, Jane Leeves, Kieran Culkin and Jay O. Sanders. The film is a dramatization of the true story of Roberta Guaspari, who co-founded the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music and fought for music education funding in New York City public schools.
After seeing the documentary Small Wonders, Craven was inspired to make a full-length film about Guaspari. Madonna was originally signed to play the role of Guaspari, but left the project before filming began, citing "creative differences" with Craven. When she left, Madonna had already studied for many months to play the violin. Streep learned to play Bach's Concerto for 2 Violins for the film. The project marked a huge departure for Craven; it was his first and only film to be rated PG, and his only one to not be horror or thriller.
It received generally positive reviews, but it bombed at the box office. It received 2 Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Song, the only Craven film to get any noms.
  • Budget: $27,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,859,394. ($27.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,936,407.

Scream 3 (2000)

"The most terrifying scream is always the last."
His 16th film. The third installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Arquette, Parker Posey, Patrick Dempsey, Scott Foley, Lance Henriksen, Matt Keeslar, Jenny McCarthy, Emily Mortimer, Deon Richmond, and Patrick Warburton. The film's story takes place one year after the previous film's events and follows Sidney Prescott, who has gone into self-imposed isolation following the events of the previous two films but is drawn to Hollywood after a new Ghostface begins killing the cast of the film within a film Stab 3.
The plans for a sequel were already underway since Williamson sold the script, although Williamson still didn't write a script yet. When the Weinsteins approached him to write the film, Williamson was already busy with many projects (including his directorial debut), and was unavailable to perform his duties. He only made a 20-page outline wherein Ghostface would return just as production on a fictional film Stab 3 would be filmed. His plan was to show the killers were part of a Stab fan club (this idea would later be adapted into his show, The Following). With Williamson not available, Ehren Kruger was tasked in writing.
Shortly before production began on the film, the Columbine High School massacre took place, and many parties began looking for reasoning behind the shooters' actions and there came an increased scrutiny on the role of the media in society, including video games and film, and the influence it could have on an audience. With production of Scream 3 not yet underway, there were considerations about whether the film should be made at that time, aware of the potential for negative attention but the studio decided to press forward, albeit with changes.
The Weinsteins demanded to scale back on the gore and emphasize its satiric humor, as well as moving the setting to Hollywood. At one point in the production, the studio went as far as demanding that the film feature no blood or on-screen violence at all, a drastic departure for the series, but Craven directly intervened. One of the aspects changed was that the killer would be revealed to be Stu Macher, having survived the original film. The Weinsteins changed it after Columbine, as they didn't want to associate violence and murder with a high school setting.
The film opened with $34.7 million, a franchise record and the biggest February debut ever. But it had weak legs, although it still made a very profitable $161.8 million worldwide. While the previous films were well-received, this film received negative reviews, who lambasted the film for becoming the very own thing it satirizes.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $89,143,175. ($178.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $161,834,276.

Cursed (2005)

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
His 17th film. It stars Christina Ricci, Joshua Jackson, Jesse Eisenberg, Judy Greer, Scott Baio, Milo Ventimiglia, Shannon Elizabeth and Mýa, and follows two orphaned siblings attacked by a werewolf loose in Los Angeles.
Kevin Williamson started working on a script that followed the exploits of a New York City serial killer who discovers that his lethal tendencies are due to his lycanthrope nature. When one of his projects was scrapped, Craven decided to direct, teaming them up again for another Scream reunion. But it wasn't planned like that. Craven was making a film, Pulse, when Bob Weinstein abruptly pulled the movie from the schedule ten days before shooting and cut through all the slow lanes, wanting Craven to get to Cursed as soon as possible. Craven was reportedly not pleased so Weinstein doubled his pay in order for him to direct the film. The director deemed the script too tonally similar to his film Vampire in Brooklyn, but felt pressured by the studio, leading him to ultimately sign on.
The film started filming in January 2003, hoping to get the film released in August. In June, they only had six days left for filming. Suddenly, Dimension Films decided to put the movie on hold because top executives at the company weren't happy with the film's ending or how the special effects were progressing, specifically the look of the film's lead lupine. Rick Baker was preparing the final transformation effects when production stopped and asked Weinstein to let his team finish the work in order for it to be ready for the reshoot, but he refused. Patrick Lussier was brought in for massive rewrites, and the film didn't return to production until November. Baker was fired, and the prosthetic make-up was replaced with CGI. Skeet Ulrich filmed his scene as one of the leads, but chose to drop out following the reshoots as he disliked the new direction. It was also heavily edited to get the R rating down to PG-13. The budget was originally $35 million, yet some reports suggest it ballooned all the way to $100 million, making it one of the most expensive horror films ever.
With that budget, it was clear it was not going to be a box office success. It flopped with just $29 million worldwide, and was panned by critics. Craven himself dislikes the final product, and a director's cut was never an option because his original ending was never filmed.
  • Budget: $100,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,297,522. ($30.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $29,621,722.

Red Eye (2005)

"Fear takes flight."
His 18th film. It stars Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, and Brian Cox. The story follows a hotel manager ensnared in an assassination plot by a terrorist while aboard a red-eye flight to Miami.
The film received Craven's best reviews in years, and was a box office success, earning almost $100 million. While he is fine with people loving it, Cillian Murphy is not really fond of the film, "I love Rachel McAdams and we had fun making it but I don’t think it's a good movie. It’s a good B movie."
  • Budget: $26,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $57,891,803. ($92.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $96,258,201.

My Soul to Take (2010)

"Only one has the power to save their souls."
His 19th film. It stars Max Thieriot, Denzel Whitaker, Raul Esparza, and Shareeka Epps. It follows Adam "Bug" Hellerman, who is one of seven teenagers chosen to die following the anniversary of a serial killer's death.
This was Craven's first film in almost two decades where he would be directing, producing and writing. But that didn't pan out to a success: it was a critical and commercial dud.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,744,435. ($21.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,500,813.

Scream 4 (2011)

"New decade. New rules."
His 20th and final film. The fourth installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anthony Anderson, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Marielle Jaffe, Erik Knudsen, Mary McDonnell, Marley Shelton, Nico Tortorella, and Roger L. Jackson. The film takes place on the fifteenth anniversary of the original Woodsboro murders from Scream and involves Sidney Prescott returning to the town after ten years, where Ghostface once again begins killing students from Woodsboro High.
In 2010, Williamson and Craven confirmed their plans for a new film. Craven said that endless sequels, the modern spew of remakes, film studios, and directors are the butts of parodies in the film. The main characters have to figure out where the horror genre is in current days to figure out the modern events happening to and around them. This was the first film in the franchise to use CGI, with the knife's blade added in post-production.
Even though the franchise was profitable, it seemed like its glory days were long behind it by the time it hit theaters. The film disappointed in its opening weekend with just $18 million, and closed with a weak $97 million worlwide, far less than the previous films. It also received mixed reviews, particularly for its writing and new characters. It was the last film directed by Craven before his death in 2015.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $38,180,928. ($53 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $97,231,420.

The Verdict

Quite inconsistent, but a very iconic figure in the horror genre. You know you made it big when your creations include Elm Street and Scream. Craven often struggled with difficult productions (you can blame the Weinsteins for that), but he still managed to make competent and scary films, even if some are better than others. Some even see critical re-appraisal as time passes; even Scream 3 and Scream 4 have their fans. We don't know what he would've done with the franchise after the fourth film, but he made it clear he was exhausted by having to film without finished scripts. Rest in Peace to a horror legend.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Clint Eastwood. I think I'll have to make two posts, given that he directed 42 films.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Ang Lee. A legendary Asian director.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 13-19 Clint Eastwood Great actor. Great director.
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
Who should be next after Lee? That's up to you. And there's a theme.
And that theme is: controversial directors. I'm talking directors who have attained a polarizing response to their films (like Zack Snyder), or the directors themselves are also controversial figures in real life (like Oliver Stone). Basically, a director that has as many fans as haters.

2024.05.11 16:38 EntrepreneurLow825 18-year-old here! How to be more normal?

Hii, I'm 18f and I wanna learn how to be more normal. If you don't wanna read my rant, I just need advice on how to be more like my peers and act like my age, so I won't get bullied. I've been feeling drained lately, so here's my rant:
I used to be a very social kid, but I've never been the same due to the bullying and peer trauma I've experienced from my past school. It made me struggle with my self-esteem and I guess it ruined most of my teenage years. I've never been the same, and now I'm just socially awkward.
I talk a lot with the teens in my class, but I've always struggled with being more like them. They party, drink, smoke, and make rumors about each other. And it's just not my thing, but they've been overly suspicious of me for not acting "normally". They feel like I'm too nice and a lot of them think I'm so much younger than them (That's coz I look 14, according to them). There's this time they even had to check my phone when I joined in on their conversation, coz they think I'm a snitch.
And for that, they always act so mean about everything. I care about my studies a lot, but some people just don't seem to like it. They think like they rule the school and are free to judge people who aren't part of their circle.
Recently, there's these two people who were so rude to me over the script I wrote. It's not constructive criticism, they straight up humiliated me and said swear words. Yet they didn't even contribute anything to the script, and I wrote it myself. People from the same circle as them have pointed out things about my looks and told me I probably got blood cancer (I'm anemic and I always look tired).
The only time these people are nice to me is when they're using me for grades. But I just give in coz I'm scared of being treated like how I was in my past school. And yes, I could've befriended these people, but it's difficult coz they already got established friendgroups before 11th grade. It doesn't help that I struggle with both my mental and physical health, but I just can't get enough rest coz of all the workload these people give me in group tasks. It's also difficult coz I'm not as rich as these people who flex their crap all the time, and it makes me feel like I'm missing out so much.
And every single day, I feel like crying myself to sleep whenever I get home. I know it's my fault coz I'm extremely emotional, but I'm tired of being the weird, quiet kid with only one friend in class. How should I deal with this?

2024.05.11 14:27 MGT1111 13 Maladaptive Defense Mechanisms Against the Healing of Destructive Emotion and Painful Experiences as an Emotional Barter Deal in Polyamory and Nonmonogamy: Projective Identification in Polyamorous and Nonmonogamous Abuse!

When a person expels an unacceptable behaviour or action, it may well be onto another person. Projective identification is used to project the bad behaviour or action into (not onto) another person so it becomes a part of that person. The person then identifies with that other person, and hence has means to control them.The person projected into may consequently be pressured to behave congruently with the projective phantasy, believing and accepting their role. The projecting person may also seek to be physically close to the person into whom the fantasy is projected. Projective identification may also be used to externalize confusing or uncertain aspects of the self so they can be studied more objectively and then re-internalized in a more acceptable form.
The concept of projective identification can be described as a type of defense mechanism or strategy employed by the unconscious mind, that allows an individual to deny or distort reality (create a fantasy) in order to maintain a socially acceptable self-image. Applied to polyamory and ENM this means that projective identification allows the polyamorist unconsciously to deny or distort the million of years proven reality of monogamy and pair bonding as one of the most deep seated hallmarks of the human species in order to maintaim a socially acceptable image despite the attept to rationalize infidelity and systemically institutionalise adultery as well as acitively abusing their spouses and mistreating them. As result, the manipulated victim begins to behave congruently with the projective phantasy, believing and accepting their role, as I have outlined above.
This takes place also or maybe especially during an interpersonal interaction in which the projector pressures the projected into thinking, feeling, and acting in accordance with the projection. In polyamory and ENM this may take place as the nonmonogamist applies pressure and manipulation on a reluctant spouse or proselytize monogamous people into polyamory
In other words, projective identification consists not only in the projection of negative aspects of oneself onto others but also in the pressure exerted on the other for him to act in a way that is congruent with what is being projected. For instance, a polyamorist or a practitioner of polyamory projects his unfaithfulness unto others believing everyone is a cheater, promiscous, und faithful anf monogamy isn't natural. Then, after rationalizing and trying institutionalizing infidelity, they procceed to proselytize others to act in the same way. The polyamorous war and crucade against monogamy, the mass shaming of monogamous people and the phenomenon of the polyamorous industroal and media complex, are all rooted and are expression of said projective identification.
Another form of projective identification happens on the relational level between two partner either by polybombing, enforcing a mono poly relationship on a monogamous spouse by exploiting her or his weaknesses or by trying to manipulate and gaslight a reluctant partner. Projective identification here is the process by which a thought or feeling is projected into the reluctant monogamous partner, then interacting with that person to make him/her experience the projected feeling. As if the other person becomes the container for affect they cannot tolerate themselves. As such and by using tactics of manipulation and gaslighting, projective identification often crosses the line into the realm of emotional abuse.
Projective identification goes also the other way aroung. It is most hazardous when the victim, the person who has been projected onto, intetnalize the content of projection, and starts to believe the agressor, namely the person who is projecting. In this case, Projective identification is when someone has been projected onto, and they internalize those qualities believing them to be truthful. This means that the judgments, negative feelings, or deficiencies that someone cannot accept themselves are then blamed onto another person, who, in turn, due to fear of loss, loneliness or abondonment, gives credence to those statements by rationalizing everything.
While there are many different types of defense mechanisms, projection and projective identification is perhaps the one that inflicts the most collateral damage. When someone is projecting, they are denying their inadequacies, failings, and other negative emotions and parts of the self and displacing them onto someone else. When the other person fell prey and internalizes evreything, the projecting person succeeded in succumbing someone into suffering and the projected on person lives nowin the word of agonizing suffering.
In polyamory this scenario plays out when a polyamorist polybombs, manipulates, gaslights, emotionally blackmails or plays on the insecurities of the reluctant spouses. Quite a seizable size and even great portion of those who engage in monogamy are spouses who were afraid to loose the partner and did not enthusiastically or realy wholeheartedly but quite reluctantly agreed to non monogamy.
In the previois article, I've elaborated on projection as a defense mechanism within the context of cluster B disorder and narcissim and abuse which pervasively overlaps with polyamory and nonmonogamy. To put it simply and ss extinuation, projective identification is a form of abuse that happens when a polyamoristand nonmongamit exhibit narcissitic tendencies, not being able to deal with their problems and past traumas, the shadow side of themselves. Instead of directly dealing with these undesirable aspects of their personality, they use you as an emotional dumping ground, exclaiming, "I don't want these feelings; you take them."
Thus, it is worth mentioning that when they treat you like you're inherently "bad," posessive, controlling, unappealling, dumb, a loser, or worthless, a well know polyamorous and nonmonogamous tactic of monogamy shaming, it's a clear evidence, they're projecting the parts of themselves they dislike onto you. It's a common tactic nonmonogamist and polyamorists share with narcissist, overt or covert. Unlike more obvious forms of abuse, projective identification as a form of mental and emotional abuse, operates on a subconscious level and has a profound impact on the recipient—the spouse or partner of a narcissistic polyamorist and nonmonogamist.
From the standpoint the psychoanalytic theory, what makes projective identification different from "simple" projection is that projective identification combines elements of both projection and introjection. The projector thrusts their emotions, thoughts, or traits onto the recipient and induces a compelling psychological influence that prompts the recipient to internalize and identify with these projected elements. Polybombing as well as polyamorous or nonmonogamous councelling sessions with a reluctant monogamous spouse, are prime examples of projection and projective identtification as a form of narcissistic abuse.
In the above example, this twofold nature turns the reluctant and monogamous partner into an unconscious collaborator in the drama, as they unknowingly internalize the projected attributes as their own. It is not just about the polyamorist and nonmonogamist projecting emotions outwardly but it also binds the reluctant paryner and the monogamous recipient in a shared emotional narrative when they internalize the abuse, blurring the lines between self and other.
Experiencing such projective identification is synonymous with enduring a profound and sustained form of gaslighting which is anothetr aspect of narcissistic abuse as applied by polyamorist and non monogamist too. The constant projection of the partners and often the poly or nonmonogamy therapist's unresolved emotions, fears, or insecurities onto you creates a distorted reality in which the experiences of the reluctant monogamous partners are systematically invalidated. The result is a pervasive sense of confusion and self-doubt, akin to living in a perpetual state of polyamorous and nonmonogamous gaslighting.
Esxperiencing such gaslighting and abuse over time, the reluctant and monogamous spouse begin to internalize the false narrative, the distorted sense of reality, doubting the authenticity of their own experiences. The insidious nature of this dynamic compounds the trauma, as you start to believe you are the one who made up your trauma. Heinz Kohut's, a psychologist, explains that individuals with narcissistic traits have fragile self-structures and struggle with a lack of mirroring and empathy during their development. Their self-esteem is fragile, so when they encounter aspects of themselves they find undesirable or threatening, they resort to projecting them outward onto others
Polyamorists and nonmonogamists use projection as a defense mechanism to be rid of parts of themselves they do not want to face. Polyamorous and nonmonogamous projective identification takes it a step further—it involves projecting and compelling the the reluctant monogamous spouse, actually the monogamous majority, to internalize and identify with these projections, both as a personal as well as collective form of abuse. The spouse and as extention everyone that is monogamous monogamous, becomes an emotional dumping ground and punching bag for the polyamorous and nonmonogamous mental issues.
Imagine a situation in which a a polyamorist and nonmonogamist uses projective identification to inject their feelings of insecurity, worthlessness, unworthiness and inadequacy onto you. In this psychological movie, you would find yourself enveloped in a swamp of insecurity, inadequacy, worthlessness and unworthiness thinking it originates from yourself rather than something your spouse have injected into you. The subtlety of this form of narcissistic poly and nonmonogamous abuse lies in its unconscious nature. As the projector, the polyamorous and nonmonogamous spouse remains oblivious to their role as the emotional scripter, and you, as the the unconcious recipient, are equally unaware of the emotional script being imposed upon you.
Instead of working on themselves through personal growth, therapy, or addressing past traumas, they hand off their emotional baggage to you. Unconsciously, they resort to different tactics, all to make you believe that their shame and self hatred are somehow your own issues. Adding to the complexity, polyamorists and nonmonogamists might unknowingly replay their own childhood traumas while living with you. It is like a subconscious replay button, where they make you feel the same way they did when they were growing up—worthless, insecure, inadequate, betrayed, abondoned, unworthy, ashamed, and in constant fear of loneliness. So, when they behave this way, they pass on their unwanted shame, urging you to carry and absorb their burdon as your emotional baggage.
Based on the theory of Ogden, one can say that projective identification as in regard to narcissism and by extention to polyamory and nonmonogamy has three steps:
a. The unconscious impulse of projecting a painful or destructive part of ones own shadow into another person and of that part taking over the person from within.
b. A conscious interpersonal interaction by means of manipulation and gaslighting brings pressure on other to think and act like the projection.
c. The reintrojection ot internalization of the projection after it is psychologically processed and then internalized by the other. This processing by the other is also an unconscious process.
The drive or the impulse of controlling the other person from within is key to projective identification, and the result takes place not merely in the mind. This is not a virtual pressure, but rather, real one exerted by means gaslighting and emotional manipulation based a multitude of interactions between the projector and the recipient. Projective identification does not exist where there is no interaction between projector and recipient. Though done intentially, the pressure itself is more overt and hidden aspect of behavior. It's message, though unstated, is "if you are not what I want you to be, you don’t exist for me"
As I also said in my article on projection, though highly developed as theories, they are all the same extremely subtle mental projections, garbed in an intricate metaphysical and philosophical phraseology about love, understading, caring and sharing. These ideas are so deep-rooted in narcissists, polyamorists and nonmonogamist, and so near and dear to them, that they do not wish to hear, nor do they want to understand, any teaching against them. In fact, they pervert the meanings of these important values to create a false narrative of their meanings. So, how does it work? Let's see.
Though projective identification is clearly an intrusion and an offence against another person, narcissists and by extention nonmonogamist and polyamorists, distort the meaning of intrusion and gaslighting and paint a cosy picture of the abuse as the most fundamental reflection of their desire to be heard and understood. In other words, through intricate mental processes of distortion, denial, delusion and self deception, the abuse turned into love and the need to be heard. Seems familiar? Of course, that's the first line of defense, domestic abuser use when battering their spouses, for instance.
Narcissists go on to abuse and pervert and very important value of human being wanted to be acknowledge of their suffering. Healthy people seek to air their feelings and their suffering to be acknowlodging. They seek support but they don't wish others to dwell in agony. Unhealthy poeple, look for others not really to perfectly understand their suffering, but they do require them to take on their suffering. Polyamorists as well as nonmonogamists do exactly that. Because it's quite clear to identify this kind of abuse and see projective identification for what it is, an aggressive form of interpersonal violence, the narcissit, the polyamorist and nonmonogamisy resort to a more covert tactic. They, again, describe this kind of abuse and paint a cosy picture of just being another way to look at it as though that it is the most primal and fundamental way of sharing an unbearable experience, and that an act of sharing may be an act of love. When, you hear, for instance, swingers and polyamorista spew the infamous "sharing is carring", those are the extremely subtle mental processes, garbed in an intricate metaphysical and philosophical phraseology about love, understading, caring and sharing, that excuse the evil.
Both projection as well as projective identification are a fundamental concepts in understanding violence and abuse. While projection is more easier to grasp, projective identification is a more covert tactic to be aggressive while appearing to be the nice or the victim. The bully seeks validation, the perverted sense of being "understood" by others, by means of making the spouse and others believe, it's them the problem, while they walk scot-free.
Moreover, projection and projective identification, are not just mere Freudian defense mechanisms, they are powerful tool for justifying aggression, violence and abuse. The narcissist, the polyamorist, the nonmonogamist, the borderline personality, and other people that have regressed to a shallow level, will project accusations like a firehose, they will use them to gaslight and emotionally manipulate the spouse to believe it's not them, the abuser being the problem but the victim itself, and the increasingly wild nature of the accusations will reflect the decay of their mental condition. The cognitive dissonance in the head is reflected by the increasingly contradictory and mutually exclusive accusations they hurl.
In other words, projective identification is a way of getting the proof of that horrible but elusive something about the other person, a way to get group (or personal false sense of) validation, praise, and attention. This quote from Wikipedia is way too technical but let's rephrase it. Projective identification is a term first used by Melanie Klein (1946) to describe a process whereby parts of the ego are thought of as forced into another person who is then expected to become identified with whatever has been projected. Understand it now or maybe not? Well, that may be way too obscure, so let's rephrase it again.The projector strives to find in the other, or to induce the other to become, the very embodiment of projection..... their behavior towards the object of projection invokes in that person precisely the thoughts, feelings or behaviors projected.
Now it is clearer - instead of just making foolish ad hominem attacks, the aggressor tries to bait a victim into giving them the proof they need so desperately to validate their own suppressed rage, anger and hatred. Then they can rally their friends or family for an attack. Bonus points are awarded for gaining sympathy and being the center of attention. The manipulator poses as a poor victim, but orchestrates the whole performance for an audience. I guess it could be used for good, but it seems like it's always a form of aggression, specifically covert aggression. Those processes are very known tactics applied by polyamorists whether they polybomb their spouse, nuke the relationshipwith nonmonogamy or engaging in monogamy shaming.
Probably the easiest way to understand this is to review projection and projective identification and and see the difference. So, how works the twofold nature ofprohection and orojective identification abuse? Here is an example:
First, cones projection:
1) A liar accuses others of lying.
2) The cheater accuses others of cheating.
3) The thief accuses others of stealing.
4) The polyamorist and nonmonogamist accuses others of bein cheaters, unthrustworthy, promiscous and sexually permissive
(Notice how the abuser is, generally, accusing everyone, yet, not accusing them of any transgression, but only the one he's obsessed with namely his own?)
And, then, follows, projective identification:
1) An angry person accuses their victim of being angry, until the victim becomes angry.
2) An depressed person accuses their victim of being depressed, until the victim becomes depressed.
3) The parent constantly accuses their child of being defiant until the child becomes defiant.
4) The person who feels crazy accuses the other of being crazy (projection of bad thoughts) with the intention of making them believe they are crazy ("gaslighting").
5) The polyamorist and nonmonogamist accuses everyone and especially their spouses of being cheaters, unthrustworthy, promiscuous and sexually permissive with the aim at proselytizing them until they succumb and convert to the polyamorous and nonmonogamous cult
(notice how the effort has shifted now to one specific victim, an individual or a collective, until they succumb and, internalize the abuse hurled at them and begin to act in the spirit of the projected incentive)
Likewise, projective identification differs from the simple projection in that projective identification can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, whereby the projector hating certain parts about their existence and nature, carring a perveted or distorted understanding of reality based on self deception carry a false narrative and an intencive to influence and coerce the recipient to carry out the precise content of the projection and its goal so that the projector now get the justification and confirmation that the unwanted parts are no more perceived as bad but legitimate, hence, now other people are having them too. In extreme cases, the recipient may lose any sense of their real essense of existence and become reduced to the passive carrier of outside projections as if possessed by them. This phenomenon has been noted as being rooted gaslighting.
Within the context of polyamory and nonmonogamy, projective identification projective identification become a self-fulfilling prophecy, when the projector hating certain parts about their existence and nature, related to our monogamous parts, monogamous relationships and past traumes telating and resulting from them, carring a distorted understanding of the monogamous reality as well as distorted view of the nonmonogamous nature and based on self deception carry a false narrative and an intencive to influence and coerce the monogamous recipients to carry out the precise content of the projection and its goal so that the projector now get the justification and confirmation that the unwanted parts are no more perceived as bad but legitimate, hence, now other people are having them too. As we have said, in these cases, the recipient loses any sense of their real essense of their existence and becomes reduced to the passive carrier of outside projections as if possessed by them. That's why polyamory and nonmonogamy are abusive and represent a form of intimate partnet violence
The very nature of this behavior is exatcly what is understood as projective identification. It reflects the fact that the assumptions made by the projector about the recipient and reality reveal the projectors unconscious impulses, drives, traits, desires and delusions, their perceptions about themselves, their inner worlds, the others, the othrr's inner world as well as the external world, especially the projector's most primal fears and destructive emotion, attitudes and traits. Because the projector is incapable to take responsibility of them, they project their inner toxicity onto the recipieny, and in doing so the recipient aims at disowning them. This pushing off of unnaceptable aspects of the projector's personality represents the lack of accountability and exibits the narcissistic attemot of blame shifting. It stands at the root of this kind of behaviour. In the projector's unconscious mind this is perceived as the benefit of of the emotional barter deal yearning to avoid suffering by means of deception or escapism, yet, in reality it only creates more suffering.
At the core of this emotional barter deal the principle, the concept or the perception of “as if”. That is, the projector engaging in this defense mechanism is basically creating baseless assumptions of no corresponding reality about the incentives and the nature of the recipient, the external world as well as reality itself. Having created a virtual picture for oneself instead of reality, the recipient, then, goes on to behave as if their assumptions are valid. In other words, the projector engaging in this kind of behaviour projects , perceptions, motives, axioms, and emotions onto the recipient and then identifies with those projected traits and hallmarks, reincorporates them, and acts accordingly. Projective identification is, therefore, a kind of closed circuit, which typically serves a self-fulfilling prophecy, as mentioned above, because it causes the recipient to drown in the projector’s closed loop. This is the stage that is interactive between projector and recipient. Though the projectors maneuvers follow a self-contained loop, they enforce it with such pathos, they draw the recipient right into becoming an active player in the movie that the projetor ha created which has now brought the recipient into the third stage.
What happens when the projector's painted picture or created movie also incorporates promiscuity, infidelity, adultery and an extramarital relationships? Can a projector coerce and manipulate with gaslighting the recipient as enacnct that triangulate which is destructive marriages and relationships? I want not to discuss a term I borrowed from Robert Mendelson that is collusive infidelity and discus it in this exact context and in relation to polyamory and nonmonogamy.
Subsequently and relating to polyamory and nonmonogamy, collusive nonmonogamous adultery or collusive nonmonogamy is a situation where either there is a reluctant partner or one partner is less interested than the other and the more willing nonmonogamous partner unconsciously coercing the other partner to engage in an adultery and a promiscuous behavior with an outsider to the marriage. Neither member of the couple is conscious of the collusion that is the coercive aspect, so that the partner who is already committing adultery or is acting in ways typical of someone who wishes to do this. That is, he or she is either already pursuing an affair, having someone on mind ready to go or just planning in general terms to do so while keeing the secrets and conflict of interest inherent in the practice.
This act requires not only skill in deception, but also denial, distortion, rationalization, compartmentalization and more. To hide an actual affair or planning to do so while encouraging the other partner to think that his or her suspicions are ridiculous or that their unwillingness to do so is a result of ther infiiority, backwardness and unopeness requires a high level of wicked lying and evil manipulation commonly acknowledged as gaslighting. Polybombing, taking a reluctant monogamous partner to poly therapist or even suggesting such a partner tries to hear out and understand the monogamous spouse are some example for such evil behaviour
Collusion, however, is more active than mere enabling which can bemore passive. Coersion by means of gaslighting and deception is the crucial aspect of collusion as I have described it above. Collusion embodies a more active role of involvement in the marital recipient's enactments. In other words, a colludeding may also mean enabling but an enabling is not necessarily colluding. Whereas an enabler simply may simply ignorethe situation trying to adjust to the situation with someone who acts out his or her addictions, the projector's enabling involves primarily conscious and unconscious behaviour, that is, he or she are active agents of coercion.
While collusion means a consciously effort on the projector's part, that is, he or she, both on the unconscious as well as on the conscious level, are planning, plotting and executing a plan, the enabling recipient being more weak or codependent simply allows the situation to happen by turning a blind eye to it or keeps quite as not to shake the boat. Similar to the cheater, a nonmonogamist acting in this way by means of projective indentification, sets a goal and achieves a moral equivalency in which his unacceptable behaviour is whitewashed and he get's the justification he's seeking. The cheater would say, "you see, you also did it, that's o.k." and the polyamorist or nonmonogamist would proclaim, "you see, you did it, it was you being unreasonable". Clear tactics of gaslighting.

Is ALAMAT's advocacy performative? (Some thoughts)
Hello! Sorry this took me so long. I’m here to try to answer the question of ALAMAT’s advocacy being performative or not. Buckle up because this is... very lengthy. (That’s why it took me so long to post it.) Please do not screenshot my post and share it on other platforms; I have extreme anxiety.
First off, let’s define the word “performative.” Merriam-Webster defines it as “(disapproving) made or done for show (as to bolster one’s own image or make a positive impression on others).” This definition is undoubtedly what is being meant when some people call ALAMAT’s advocacy performative.
So… what is their advocacy? This was their mission statement before:
“Sa pamamagitan ng musika, layunin ng ALAMAT ang ipagdiwang ang ating pagka-Pilipino at maitanim sa puso’t isipan ng mga kabataang Pinoy na hindi kailangan hubarin ang ating kultura’t pagkakakilanlan para lamang umangat at makilala sa pandaigdigang entablado.”
(Through music, ALAMAT’s mission is to celebrate our Filipino identity and to instill in the hearts and minds of the Filipino youth that we do not need to discard our culture and heritage in order to succeed and be recognized on the world stage.)
This is found in the description of their newer videos: “Alamat is a 6-member sing-rap-dance boy group from the Philippines that combines both traditional and modern Philippine cultural elements with Western/global influences in the various facets of their music, including dance, fashion, and iconography.”
I believe their newer statement is more in line with what they’re actually doing and puts less pressure on them. Their thing has always been taking precolonial cultural elements and modernizing them, and using indigenous elements but adding Western influences. It’s never been about “pure” representations, but infusing postcolonial, Westernized Filipino culture with precolonial or indigenous elements.
When some people call their advocacy performative, they are trying to say that:
1. ALAMAT’s concept of multiculturalism and embracing indigenous Philippine culture(s) is purely a gimmick. The members do not care about it, and neither does the creative director. Is that true? Let’s investigate:
I believe that it is possible for the members not to care about it if they were all pale-skinned, mestizo guys from Manila. However, all of them are probinsyanos, not all of them fit the dominant Eurocentric/East Asian-centric beauty standards, and most of them speak a different language (not Tagalog) as their mother tongue.
The director mentioned before that he specifically chose members who were short, because the industry favors taller men (despite the fact that the average height in the Philippines is considerably shorter than other countries’). Tomas alone is, in more than one way, the exact kind of person who can’t not care about ALAMAT’s advocacy: he is the shortest member, standing at around 5’5”, he’s moreno, and he’s a Bicolano speaker who has an accent when speaking in Tagalog. He talked about it here, all the way back in August 2021 pa. He said that he often got rejected in the acting industry because of his Bicolano accent.
Mo is visibly and proudly Blasian, Tomas is a short, moreno Bicolano, and Taneo is moreno and Indigenous on his father’s side. Even the members who fit the hegemonic beauty standards more — Jao with his tisoy/chinito looks, Alas with his pale skin and chinito looks, R-Ji who is fairly tall for a Filipino guy and has classically tisoy facial features a la Kyle Echarri — would struggle to fit in the industry for other reasons. Alas mentioned in the same interview as that one (more on that later) that he was often bullied for being Bisaya.
Hollywood actor Alex Mallari Jr. (Ginny & Georgia, The Adam Project) even Tweeted before that he wouldn’t be able to find acting work in the Philippines because he’s Kapampangan and moreno. (I can’t find the Tweet anymore because he deleted his account, sadly.)
The Philippine entertainment industry is highly colorist, highly favors Eurocentric and East Asian looks, and strongly discriminates against people from the probinsya, especially those whose first language isn’t Tagalog. My point here is that I would believe that these guys do not genuinely care about the advocacy/concept if they were the type of guys who could easily succeed in the industry without thinking about those things. But they are not.
Mo did a (really beautiful) interview with Mixed Asian Media, an independent online zine, not some prestigious, high-profile publication, in September 2023. He spoke about his mixed Black and Filipino identity. It is clear that this advocacy of promoting Filipino multiculturalism is highly personal to the members.
I’m not gonna lie — I think one of the main reasons that they have a reputation for “not being able to talk about their advocacy properly” is that a lot of people have unreasonable expectations regarding their speaking skills. They are young entertainers who simply have lived experiences that make the concept highly relevant to them. They are not academics and they are not diplomats. Not to mention that some of them aren’t confident when they speak in English or Tagalog.
They do explain their own emotional investment in the concept as well as they should reasonably be expected to explain it (“I care about it because I know how discrimination/lack of representation has affected me and the impact it’s had on people around me as well, so what we do makes me feel less insecure about my own cultural identity”).
You’ve got the members passionately speaking out about their own experiences (like here) and you’ve got academics for the more formal explanations. It’s not like they don’t invite academics to their platform, you know? An Akeanon professor who has published many relevant sociolinguistics studies spoke on one of their videos and they literally had a historian on their channel during their debut era.
As for their creative director, promoting multilingualism and multiculturalism has been this guy’s thing even before ALAMAT came to be. I know a lot of people aren’t huge fans of his, but we need to acknowledge that. I don’t get this idea that he’s just using this concept to make a quick buck because the Filipino entertainment industry and society still vastly favor Tagalog-centrism. Doing this concept was and is a risk.
He wrote the script for 2 Cool 2 Be 4Gotten (2016) and it features the Kapampangan language, even though it’s not directly related to the plot at all. Beauty Gonzalez was speaking in her native language, Cebuano Bisaya, in The Third Party (2016), even though it has no relevance to the plot or setting (a woman in Manila has to live with her bisexual ex and his boyfriend). His 2018 film, Bakwit Boys, heavily features the Kapampangan culture and language, inspired by his own upbringing.
As I’ve mentioned before, a few years ago, I found a research paper that included his blog post from 2007. To my amusement, he was credited simply as a “Filipino blogger,” but yeah… even in 2007, he was already speaking up about the discrimination against Bisaya folks, even though he himself is Kapampangan and not Bisaya.
2) They are only using Indigenous aesthetics, but don’t care about Indigenous peoples of the Philippines. Likewise, they use aesthetics from non-Tagalog cultures but don’t uplift non-Tagalog people.
To be honest, I believe that much of this is answered by the stuff above. However, putting aside the members’ own ethnic and cultural backgrounds, they definitely do work with and feature a lot of Indigenous and non-Tagalog talents on their platform. Some examples:
  • They featured various Indigenous/non-Tagalog language speakers (besides the members) on one of their languages comparison video: https://youtu.be/KU0iUX6d7Ys
  • They highlighted an Aeta tribe in “ABKD” and worked closely with them.
  • A Maranao performer did a solo at their Pasulong album launch: https://youtu.be/oBTkIp7fu3Q?t=2675
  • “say u love me” was co-written by Jin Chan, a Bisaya artist from Davao.
  • “Day & Night” was co-written and co-composed by Therese Villarante-Langit, a Vispop artist who wrote Vispop songs like “My Morena Girl” (probably the most recognizable one).
  • They also consistently give proper credit to the sources of their indigenous textiles. For example, you can easily find credits for Hanap Habi and Kandama Collective in the “Dagundong” MV description. They have worked with Hanap Habi and Kandama Collective for a long time now. Hanap Habi supports Indigenous female weavers in Benguet and Kandama Collective is owned by Victor Baguilat Jr., who is Ifugao.
Aside from that, they also publicly supported Indigenous rights at UP Fair this year:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GNEQHl6asAAUqrC?format=jpg&name=large
Predebut, Alas was also a youth coordinator for Let's Do It Philippines in Davao, which he talked about in their broadcast channel. LDIP is a grassroots coalition for environmental action, and he stated that his team helped Indigenous folks in Mindanao solve environmental issues.
Of course, there are always ways for the advocacy to be represented better. I myself have a major criticism of their MVs:
Their leading ladies are usually still very mestiza or chinita. There’s nothing wrong, of course, with having a mestiza/chinita leading lady. However, in “ABKD,” they show a young Aeta girl whose self-esteem is damaged by Eurocentric beauty standards and colorism. Yet their music videos often reinforce this beauty standard by almost always casting mestiza/fair-skinned chinita women as romantic leads. This beauty standard has an even greater impact on Filipina girls/women than men.
It’s sad, TBH, that “Maharani” is probably their only MV with naturalistic color grading among the ones that feature a romance storyline. Probably because Jhoanna is the only leading lady they’ve gotten so far* who actually registers as morena on-screen even without a filter that makes her look darker:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GM-a-eabsAA3xkU?format=jpg&name=large
* I am aware that they featured Lyca Gairanod in their “ILY ILY” MV, but she was shown as the members’ classmate/sister(? unclear which), not in a romantic context.
I really hope they get morena leading ladies in upcoming MVs, especially after the “ABKD” MV condemned colorist beauty standards that damage the self-esteem of young girls especially. I know for a fact that Viva has morena talents, so even if they wanted to keep it in-house, they can still do better. Morena girls deserve to be shown as worthy of love. I hope the group features a more visually diverse set of leading ladies, as a part of their advocacy.
But yeah. Their advocacy is not perfect, but what we see indicates that the members’ and the creative team’s intentions are sincere. There are ways for it to be better, but they are definitely not performative and have already done so much great work in the few years that they have been a group.

[A4A]Older Sibling Comforts You After A Bad Day at School

free to monetize! to credit, just link my YT (find in my profile)! Thanks! :D Location/Ambience: bedroom ambience, you can hear traffic outside (or rain if you want) Listener: little sibling who had a bad day returning to school Voice: Older sibling - concerned and wanting to comfort the listener Theme: We all have bad days, but it doesn't make YOU bad :)
(this is the first script I ever wrote)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
walks in door
Hey, I’m home.
keys on table, pause
You here?
Oh! - (changes to a whisper)in bed already?
Hey…
knock knock, walks closer to listener
Hello…
pat pat
Ohp - Shh it’s just me. It’s a bit early to find you all curled up in bed. Your eyes are red, are you ok? (small chuckle) You’re fine? I’m… not very convinced. You went back to school today, did something go wrong? EVERYTHING?! That’s… a lot of things… was it hard to find your classes? I know that building is like a maze -
No?
Well, of course, lol, you’re always so good at directions, and you HAVE been going there for a whole semester already. Of course you’d know your way around.
Maybe… were the teachers awful? You said you were taking physics, right? Mr. Malcolm.. Is REALLY strict so if it’s him, I totally get what you mean. He made ME cry once! Yeah, yeah he did. Was that what happened?
(sigh) If you don’t wanna talk about it, that’s ok. But… I know you, and I know how it usually helps you to talk things through - yeah? Alright, great!
Well, here, let me sit down. C’mon, make some room. Don’t make me tickle you - Ok, ok, sorry, sorry, bad timing, yeah I know…
Alright! This way I can relax, you can relax, and you can tell me EVERYTHING that went wrong. Do you want me to pat your back? Alright, here. Just relax, it’s ok now. I’m here for ya.
calm patting
______
(for context - listener proceeds to explain they were super sleepy to get up at 6 am Mom yelled at them to hurry up before they missed the bus
Panicked getting on the bus, didn’t know who to sit with and ended up sitting in a seat with something sticky and smelly on it
Got overwhelmed being around all the loud immature and careless kids
Had to sit alone at lunch cause all their friends were sitting with the noisy ones
Went outside to cry and was late to a class after lunch
Missed assignments due to being overwhelmed
Had to sit between two bratty girls passing notes
Found the person they had a crush on, and they were now with an ex friend)
______ Mhhm… wow… ok… that really does sound like everything. Ok so let me see if I’ve got everything…
deep breath
So first, you got up late and mom yelled at you, and you missed breakfast because you were going to miss the bus.
Then on the bus, you didn’t know anyone, so you panicked and picked the first seat available, but it had something like… what was it? Dried up orange juice? Stuck on it? Man.. that’s so gross…
And then once you got to school you got really overwhelmed by all the loud, annoying kids, and you sat alone at lunch time because you couldn’t find your friends, and then you were late to your first afternoon class because you were crying outside?
sad sigh
Aaaaand… you missed an assignment cause you were so overwhelmed you didn’t hear it? Oh- right, cause you were sitting between two immature girls passing notes - and then, last but not least, you found out that the person you had a crush on last semester is with your ex-friend?
exhale dramatically
…damn. That really does feel like everything. (pats pack) Sorry that all happened to you. I might have cried all day too if that had been my first day back to school. But! I’m really proud of you for getting through it.
Yeah, you finished the day out. You made it. A hard day like that - and you didn’t die, you didn’t call mom or dad to come pick you up, you didn’t run away. That takes some courage, kiddo!
pat back
Mhhm, I mean it. Hm? Calling mom and dad to get you? Well, I… I know someone who used to do that if they had a bad day at school.
Eh?! Me?! Well… haha yeah, you figured it out. It was me. I used to have really bad anxiety in school too. I didn’t really tell you about it because… well, you know, I didn’t want you to be scared of school!
After all, school can be really fun sometimes! You get to meet lots of new people, you get to learn new things, and when you do your homework and participate and stuff, it’s really rewarding!
What? No! Hey you stop that right now, you’re NOT dumb. If there’s something you didn’t understand in school, it’s because you were overwhelmed, like today, or the teachers didn’t teach you right.
As long as you’re doing your best to put new things in that capable brain of yours, you’re doing everything right. It can be really frustrating when you can’t figure something out, or you can’t remember everything you’re expected to, but it does NOT mean you’re dumb!
If you are having a hard time with something, it’s likely the other kids are too.
I remember this one time… in algebra class. Miss Leonard was trying to explain some new thing… what was it…
haha, see I already forget! Anyway, she was trying to teach us some new way to solve this one maths equation, and I felt so dumb for really not being able to get it. I just sorta sat there, feeling stupid… and then when she asked us to give our answers, NONE of us got it right!
So yeah… I’m sure if there’s something you’re not too sure of, you’re probably not the only one who needs a little extra explanation. But yeah anyway, you’re not dumb!
You’re smart, you’re creative, and you’re… hhm… what’s the word… persistent? Perseverent?
Yeah. You’re strong, and today proved it.
Yes, really.
Aw, so what if you cried through it all? Tears… don’t mean you’re weak. They mean you’re working really hard!
Hey, what about your two buddies from last semester?
Different classes?
Tch. That stinks. You didn’t see them at all?
Ah. I see. She - what? Swooning over that jerk Danny again? What a shame! I thought better of her. Oh- that kind of reminds me. You said your crush… yeah. You said they -
Oh no.. hey don’t - well, if you need to cry, kiddo, that’s alright.
(scowling) I can’t believe it.. With a snobby brat like that? What a…
clears throat
Well, listen. If that’s the kind of person they’re after, then you, my friend, dodged a bullet! I know it doesn't make it feel any better though.
Tomorrow is a new day. Now that you’ve gotten today under your belt, tomorrow won’t seem so bad! After all, now you know where all your classes are, and you can take steps to make sure you avoid all the obnoxious people. And you’ll know to watch out for Mr. Malcolm.
Naw, I don’t think he hates you - he’s just really strict, super old school, you know? Yeah. I get it. Here - how about you take some deep breaths to help yourself calm down?
It’s almost midnight… you don’t have anything left to do, do you? Homework or anything? Ok, good. How about your phone, is it plugged in so it’ll be ready for tomorrow? Alarm set? OK, I can plug it in for you - what’s that?
Ok here, listen. I don’t mean to sound like mom and dad but.. You’ve been staying up soooo late - if you stay up till 4 am again - fine, 3:30 am - you’re gunna be super extra duper grumpy in the morning again, mom will be upset, and you’ll end up with the stinky orange juice seat again.
hahahaha…Mmhhm? Yeah, listen - when you sleep, your body emotionally resets.
You gotta sleep or you won’t be ready to tackle tomorrow.
That’s one thing I noticed really helped me when I was having panic attacks at school. When i started sleeping 7-8 hours every night, they happened a lot less. And… I don’t want you having panic attacks at school, kiddo. It’s really not fun…
Anyway… are you feeling a little bit better now?
Good. Here, hand me your phone and I’ll plug it in for ya.
Come oooooon…. Give it to meeeee… Ok, you know what, here. Let’s make a deal. If you give me your phone, I’ll stay here with you till you fall asleep, how’s that? I’ll sing, pat your back, help do some breathing exercises with you… the whole nine yards, I wont leave till you’re snoring.
Deal? Alright, perfect, kiddo.
plugs phone in
I’ll use all my special powers to help you sleep. Nah, don’t sweat it. It’s my job as your big sibling to help you out once in a while, k? I can’t ALWAYS be bullying you, haha.
Aw cmon I don’t bully you THAT much, right? Naww…
OK… phone plugged in, let’s start with some good old anti- anxiety breathing exercises. Sure, go ahead, get comfy first.
Alright. Take a nice deep breath with me. Ready? In - (inhale slowly) out. (exhale)
Ok now slower this time. Don’t rush it. Ok. In (inhale slower) and out. (exhale a lot slower)
Again… In (inhale slow) and out. (exhale slowly)
You’re doing so great. Let’s do it a few more times, but slower and hold it in between. Yeah, the doctor said you should count 3 seconds between breathing in and out. Let’s do it.
Breathe in - (inhale slowly) hold - (three seconds) and out (exhale)
Breathe in - (inhale slowly) hold it - (three seconds) and out (exhale). There you go.
One more time. Breathe in - (inhale slow) hold - (3 seconds) aaaand out (exhale)
Nice job.
pause, rubbing back
Sing? Uh, sure. What song do you want me to sing? (chuckle) that one? You used to always ask me to sing that when you were little. Sure, I can sing it. If i remember the words.
(feel free to sing any lullaby type song you can think of! This one is MY personal fav bc im a horse girl but feel free to do anything!)
Hush a bye, don't you cry
Go to sleep, my little baby
When you wake, you shall have
All the pretty little ponies
Blacks and bays, dapples and greys Running in the night
When you wake, you shall have
All the pretty little ponies. I… I don’t think that song has a second verse. If it does, I forget it. I’ll hum the tune for you again. hum all the song gently again Alright, my turn to pick.
hum a random song for the remainder the recording, patting back and getting slower and quieter (whispering) Ok. goodnight, kiddo. Sleep well.
rustling and quiet footsteps, door closing
[End]
