The defense and the prosecution today made their closing statements in the New York criminal case against Trump for falsifying business records to hide a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels. The payment was intended to stop her account of her sexual encounter with Trump from becoming public in the days before the 2016 election, when the Trump campaign was already reeling from the Access Hollywood tape showing Trump boasting of sexual assault.
The Biden-Harris campaign showed up at the trial today with veteran actor Robert DeNiro and former police officers Michael Fanone and Harry Dunn, who protected the U.S. Capitol and members of Congress from rioters on January 6, 2021. In words seemingly calculated to get under Trump’s skin, DeNiro said, “We New Yorkers used to tolerate him when he was just another grubby real estate hustler masquerading as a big shot,” and called him a coward.
When Robert Costa of CBS News asked campaign spokesperson Michael Tyler why they had shown up at the trial, Tyler answered: “Because you all are here. You’ve been incessantly covering this day in and day out, and we want to remind the American people ahead of the…first debate on June 27 of the unique, persistent, and growing threat that Donald Trump poses to the American people and to our democracy. So since you all are here, we’re here communicating that message.”
Yesterday, in remarks at Arlington National Cemetery in observance of Memorial Day, President Joe Biden honored “the sacrifice of the hundreds of thousands of women and men who’ve given their lives for this nation. Each one…a link in the chain of honor stretching back to our founding days. Each one bound by common commitment—not to a place, not to a person, not to a President, but to an idea unlike any idea in human history: the idea of the United States of America.”
“[F]reedom has never been guaranteed,” Biden said. “Every generation has to earn it; fight for it; defend it in battle between autocracy and democracy, between the greed of a few and the rights of many…. And just as our fallen heroes have kept the ultimate faith with our country and our democracy, we must keep faith with them,” he said.
His speech at Arlington echoed the message he delivered to this year’s graduating class at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he urged the graduates to hold fast to their oaths. “On your very first day at West Point, you raised your right hands and took an oath—not to a political party, not to a president, but to the Constitution of the United States of America—against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” he said to applause. Soldiers “have given their lives for that Constitution. They have fought to defend the freedoms that it protects: the right to vote, the right to worship, the right to raise your voice in protest. They have saved and sacrificed to ensure, as President Lincoln said, a ‘government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the Earth.’”
“[N]othing is guaranteed about our democracy in America. Every generation has an obligation to defend it, to protect it, to preserve it, to choose it,” he said. “Now, it’s your turn.” Biden spent more than an hour saluting and shaking the hand of each graduate.
In contrast, Trump ushered in Memorial Day with a post on his social media company, saying: “Happy Memorial Day to All, including the Human Scum that is working so hard to destroy our Once Great Country, & to the Radical Left, Trump Hating Federal Judge in New York that presided over, get this, TWO separate trials, that awarded a woman, who I never met before (a quick handshake at a celebrity event, 25 years ago, doesn’t count!), 91 MILLION DOLLARS for “DEFAMATION.” He then continued to attack E. Jean Carroll, the writer who successfully sued him for defamation, before turning to attack Judge Arthur Engoron, who presided over the civil case of Trump and the Trump Organization falsifying documents, and Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the current criminal case in New York.
The message behind this extraordinary post was twofold: Trump can think of nothing but himself…and he appears to be terrified.
On Saturday, May 25, Trump had an experience quite different from his usual reception at rallies of hand-picked supporters. He was resoundingly booed at the national convention of the Libertarian Party in Washington, D.C., where Secret Service agents confiscated squeaky rubber chickens before his speech. Attendees jeered Trump’s order, “You have to combine with us,” even when he reminded them of his libertarian credentials—tax cuts and defunding of federal equality programs—and promised to pardon the January 6 rioters who attacked the U.S. Capitol.
Trump also promised to pardon Ross Ulbricht, who founded and from January 2011 to October 2013 ran an online criminal marketplace called Silk Road, where more than $200 million in illegal drugs and other illicit goods and services, such as computer hacking, were bought and sold. Most of the sales were of drugs, with the Silk Road home page listing nearly 13,000 options, including heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, and LSD. The wares were linked to at least six deaths from overdose around the world. In May 2015, Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison and was ordered to forfeit more than $180 million.
Libertarians want Ulbricht released because they support drug legalization on the grounds that people should be able to make their own choices and they see Ulbricht’s sentence as government overreach. Trump has repeatedly called for the death penalty for drug dealers, making his promise to pardon Ulbricht an illustration of just how badly he thinks he needs the support of Libertarian voters. But they refused to endorse him.
Trump appeared angry, and on Sunday, as Greg Sargent reported in The New Republic, he reposted a video of a man raging at MSNBC host Joe Scarborough. In it, the man says that when Trump is reelected: “He’ll get rid of all you f*cking liberals. You liberals are gone when he f*cking wins. You f*cking blowjob liberals are done. Uncle Donnie’s gonna take this election—landslide. Landslide, you f*cking half a blowjob. Landslide. Get the f*ck out of here, you scumbag.”
Trump’s elevation of this video, Sargent notes, is a dangerous escalation of his already violent rhetoric, and yet it has gotten very little media attention.
Last November, Matt Gertz of Media Matters reported that ABC News, CBS News, and NBC News provided 18 times more coverage of 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s comment at a fundraising event that “you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables” who are “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic,” than they provided of Trump’s November 2023 promise to “root out the communist, Marxist, fascist and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country.”
CNN, the Fox News Channel, and MSNBC mentioned the “deplorables” comment nearly 9 times more than Trump’s “vermin” language. The ratio for the five highest-circulating U.S. newspapers was 29:1.
Clinton’s statement was consistent with polling, and she added that the rest of Trump’s supporters were “people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change.” She said: “Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.”
Sargent noted that news stories require context and that Trump’s elevation of the violent video should be placed alongside his many threats to prosecute his enemies. While there is often concern over disrespect toward right-wing voters, Sargent writes, there has been very little attention to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s posting of “a video that declares a large ideological subgroup of Americans ‘done’ and ‘gone’ if he is elected.”
Scott MacFarlane of CBS News reported yesterday that Republicans have ignored a law passed in March 2022 requiring the placement of a small plaque honoring police officers who protected the U.S. Capitol and the lawmakers and staffers there on January 6, 2021. It was supposed to be in place by March 2023 but has not gone up. A spokesperson for House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) says his office is working on it. Kayla Tausche of CNN reported today that three of the police officers at the Capitol that day—Sergeant Aquilino Gonell and Officer Harry Dunn, both retired, and Officer Daniel Hodges, who is still with the Washington, D.C., metropolitan police—will be traveling to swing states for the Biden campaign to tell voters that Trump threatens Americans’ fundamental rights.
Finally, today, Melinda French Gates, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, announced $1 billion in new spending over the next two years “for people and organizations working on behalf of women and families around the world, including on reproductive rights in the United States.” Only 2% of charitable giving in the U.S. goes to these organizations, she wrote the New York Times, and “[f]or too long, a lack of money has forced organizations fighting for women's rights into a defensive posture while the enemies of progress play offense. I want to help even the match.”

2024.05.29 03:47 wntri Estou ficando velho, calvo e estranho

THE CASE FOR OMEGA-3 SUPPLEMENTATION TO LOWER AGGRESSION

People who regularly eat fish or take fish oil supplements are getting omega-3 fatty acids, which play a critical role in brain function. Research has long shown a basis in the brain for aggressive and violent behavior, and that poor nutrition is a risk factor for behavior problems. Penn neurocriminologist Adrian Raine has for years been studying whether omega-3 supplementation could therefore reduce aggressive behavior, publishing five randomized controlled trials from different countries. He found significant effects but wanted to know whether these findings extended beyond his laboratory.

WHO SEEKS $7 BN WITH FUND-RAISING REVAMP

The World Health Organization launched Sunday a new financing mechanism that aims to raise $7 billion of funds that can be deployed more quickly and flexibly. The UN agency has traditionally relied on commitments from its 194 member states, but often these are apportioned to specific projects with several conditions attached, including deadlines that can prove too short. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said commitment increases would contribute $4 billion to the agency’s budget of $11.1 billion over the four years through 2028. “The Investment Round aims to mobilize the

BRAIN DAMAGE STUDY REVEALS PART OF THE BRAIN NECESSARY FOR HELPING OTHERS

Our willingness to help others is governed by a specific brain region pinpointed by researchers in a study of patients with brain damage to that region. Learning about where in the brain “helping” decisions are made is important for understanding how people might be motivated to tackle large global challenges, such as climate change, infectious disease and international conflict. It is also essential for finding new approaches to treating disorders of social interactions. The study, published in Nature Human Behaviour, was carried out by researchers at the University of Birmingham

STUDY DEMONSTRATES HOW GUT MICROBES PROCESS STEROIDS—USING FLATULENCE

It turns out flatulence can serve a purpose beyond being uncomfortable or funny: Gas released by some gut bacteria stimulates other gut bacteria to produce a hormone involved in pregnancy and in an FDA-approved treatment for postpartum depression, according to new research led by Harvard Medical School scientists. The work shows how gut bacteria can produce new hormones from steroids in bile and, in doing so, act like an endocrine organ. This research adds to the growing list of ways gut microbiota may influence human

2024.05.28 23:34 Healthy_BrAd6254 Ryzen 5 5600 2033 MHz FCLK Micron Rev E 4066 CL16

Ryzen 5 5600 2033 MHz FCLK Micron Rev E 4066 CL16
I recently got a 5600 non-X (80€ before VAT on Mindfactory) and spent the past couple of days tuning it. Turns out the RAM that I had since like 2019 is a good overclocker (Micron Rev E) and the IOD on the 5600 too. So this was my first proper attempt at overclocking. The RAM OC gets me about 15% more fps in Project Cars over XMP (3200MHz CL16).
Ryzen 5000 is probably not so relevant anymore on this subreddit, but I am proud of the result and want to share it. It might also help someone trying to OC a similar setup if they happen to find this. Btw do today's Ryzen 5000 IODs overclock better than earlier ones, or was I just lucky?

The CPU is running with PBO Boost Clock Override +200MHz with curve optimizer, so 4650MHz. The RAM is stable at 4066 CL16 with what looks to me as a beginner like tight timings. The FCLK at 2033MHz is stable too (VSOC is set to 1.175V in the bios), but it was hard to get rid of WHEA 19 errors at 2033MHz FCLK. Unfortunately I still see a single WHEA 19 every once in a while when running prime95 and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I tried so many voltage combinations. (Edit: Lower CPU temp! Even a little can make a real difference)

The benchmarks you see in the picture were done in Windows safe mode so background processes don't steal my points. It also gives me very consistent numbers. The difference in AIDA latency between runs is 0.0 to 0.1ns. I also tried 4.9GHz allcore 1.3V for fun (didn't check stability) and it increased the R23 scores significantly and decreased the AIDA memory latency by 1ns.

2024.05.28 22:46 No_Background1315 No quiero seguir asi

[First Contact] [Dark Ages] [First] [Prev] [Next] [wiki]
"Now hear this, now hear this.
"In less than an hour we will drop out of jump space. Chances of an enemy encounter are high. We are far from home, far from support and surrounded by untold trillions of Mar-gite in deep space. This is good, it means we don't have to worry about what we shoot at.
"When the time comes, I have only one standing order: fight. Fight with every gun, every missile, every ounce of will and scrap of code at your disposal. If central control is lost, fight under local control. If isolated from the computers, fight under manual control. If boarded, fight for every corridor, every stateroom, every access way you can reach. Fight for your lives and if you find your situation hopeless, fight to drag the enemy into the grave with you.
"The Confederacy expects that every sentient will do their duty. Our duty is to engage the enemy.
"And the enemy only exists to be destroyed.
"That is all." -- Nova Wars Era, Confederate Space Force, speaker and ship of origin uncertain.
"Tell me, Sister? How far does your sight reach? How many years? And then, in the future, when we have given up strength, and allies, and numbers, and the potential to fight back meaningfully, time and again, in pursuit of your safe path... and you find out it is a cul-de-sac, surrounded on all sides by death, with no possible escape, because you traded away every chance of victory because you were scared... who will you blame then?" - Dhruv Deshmuhk, Legion, apocryphal, referenced in "Telling a Hard Truth straight: a love language", Psychology Forever Journal
"We fight, not for today, not for this blood soaked agony wracked terrible day or the horrible horrible victory we may wrench from the gnashing jaws of defeat with blood soaked hands.
"We fight for tomorrow. For those yet unborn. For the future.
"You are the hope of the Telkan people. You are the living standard, the banner, that says to the universe: We will not submit! We will not kneel! We will stand! We will fight!
"With that, know that the Telkan people are with you, Marine. Always." - Director Brentili'ik, in a speech to Telkan Marine Officer's Training Course Class #10, Confederacy-Council Conflict Era.
The flashes were starting. Not big ones, not the Flashbang, but rather the tiny pinpricks of harsh light that sparkled for a second that vanished.
Deaths that had happened seconds or minutes prior.
Captain N'Skrek stared out the windows of the Show Bridge, staring at the inky black of space. The ship, the Gray Lady, was in between the Galactic Arms, in the vast nothingness that held no stellar systems.
Oh, it had at one time.
Forty thousand years prior the stars between the two galactic arm spurs had gone out, with the exception of a single string of pearls liking the two galactic arms.
Now, the Gray Lady, a ship in the Colossus Class of ancient Confederacy Space Force classification, was deep into the gulf between the galactic arms. Just over halfway.
He could see the rings that made up a long tube, the rings held into position by what looked like, at a distance of light seconds, to be thin straps. Coasting silently through the rings, bathed by light emitted by the interior of the rings, were massive Mar-gite Attack Clusters.
Sparkles were starting to show on the clusters as the Fruit Flies made their attack runs.
Larger flashes, still rendered tiny by stellar distances, started shining to brief life as the C+ cannon barrages and the missile swarms started slamming into the shining chrome ships.
Return fire was causing the battlescreens to cover the ship in a gauzy veil.
"No, no, it's all death and destruction," a Terran woman moaned from where she was being held in place by three identical human males.
Captain N'Skrek knew that it was, without any doubt, a physical assault upon the female.
But Captain N'Skrek was also smart enough to know not to get involved when two Immortals of myth and legend were having a family squabble.
After all, were not the Treana'ad a crafty and wise people who managed to obtain victgory over 25% of all military engagements with the Terrans?
"We're humans, there's always death and destruction," the male said, his voice slightly mocking. "Look past the probabilities. Look past the initial death and destruction. Look at the pathways it all leads to. Look at the path that we're taking."
The woman struggled but the man held her still.
"It's all death and destruction! Millions! Billions! Trillions of deaths!" she wailed.
"The enemy's death toll does not matter, little sister," the man, known to historians as the Biological Apostle Vat-Grown Luke, told the woman. "It's war. There will be death and destruction no matter what. What matters, all that matters, is that humanity and its allies survive."
"Please, Luke," the woman started sobbing.
"Tears don't work on me," Legion said, his voice full of dark and cruel mirth.
He leaned his head down.
"I am... Legion," he said softly.
Captain N'Skrek put the two Immortals out of his mind as he coordinated the battle, taking tactical and strategic advice from his staff.
The Fruit Flies wreaked havoc on the rings, shattering them, letting superstructure damage work with inertia and momentum to tear the systems apart. C+ cannon shots hitting deep inside the megastructures. The shots were no longer straight iron ferrite slugs with a hyperdrive engine for thrust and reactionless inertia engines for guidance and terminal maneuvers, they now had a burning core of spooky and strange-particle FOOF that weighed in the metric kilotons.
"Fruit Fly system back online, Captain."
"Fabricate and launch," N'Skrek ordered. "Compliments on their initial strikes."
The silver ships were destroyed already, the temporal range finders reporting data from when the shells would hit, telling N'Skrek's staff where the ships would be when the shots were fired.
"I can't... I can't..." the woman sobbed when N'Skrek ordered another flight of Fruit Flies into the fight.
"Parse the deaths, parse the destruction," Legion said. Another of him pointed at the icons for the just-launched Fruit Fly flights. "They are born, they live, and they die to kill the enemy. Over and over, it's what they do. Look past their deaths at their accomplishments."
The Terran woman was sobbing, but N'Skrek didn't care.
He had a job to do.
Task Force Lonely Peach had a job to do.
It had came as no surprise to him that Legion would know, without being told or having it confirmed, what the ultimate goal of Task Force Lonely Peach.
After all, Legion himself had carried out such orders under the command of the Imperium.
It no longer mattered what happened behind the Gray Lady, whether or not the Confederacy or anyone else survived. It no longer mattered if the Mar-gite were victorious or not.
The target were not the Mar-gite, present in the massive rolled up long cones.
The target were the ones pushing them forward, the ones enabling them to cross the great emptiness between the two galactic arms.
No, the target was now those enabling the Mar-gite.
Captain N'Skrek's orders were simple.
Find the enemy.
Determine their leadership.
Attack their military.
Attack their planets.
Sterilize their stellar systems.
Break the will of their civilians to support their government.
Leave them no ground to go to.
His briefing had been grim. The Confederacy was confident it could eventually stop the Mar-gite.
Eventually.
That meant dozens, hundreds, possibly thousands of planets denuded of life. Just as many stars nova-sparked to wipe out any trace of the Mar-gite.
Task Force Lonely Peach had been dispatched with a very Terran mission.
To return to the Mar-gite's masters what they had given the Confederacy.
Tenfold.
Captain N'Skrek watched as the Fruit Flies split up into squadrons, heading for any remaining hulks of the silver ships, the larger pieces of the megaconstruct, and to fire upon any of the Mega-Clusters or larger.
"Look past the death and destruction," Legion was saying. "They'll be sending in reinforcements, Sacajawea," his voice grew low and deadly. "Where will they come out."
"No, I won't," she whispered, her eyes wide and staring at the holotank. "I won't use my gift," she sobbed.
"You will. You ran away last time. You left us to rely on The Detainee to access the SUDS. You ran off and left us and humanity has been extinct for forty-thousand years," Legion was saying. "No more running, little sister. You will use your gifts, your powers, as you were meant to."
There was a perfectly timed coincidental moment of silence on the Show Bridge.
"Show us the way," Legion said.
Sacajawea suddenly jerked upright, the tendons on her neck standing out as her face raised to the ceiling. Her arm lifted, pointing out the window of the Show Bridge. Her other hand thrust itself into the hologram. Her eyes glowed purple, lightning crackled up and down her raven braids, and sparks danced between her teeth as they chattered.
A section of space was outlined as she gibbered for a moment, fragments of words, chops of sentences, followed by a string of numbers that the tactical computers recognized as coordinates.
"They come, more than before. They know not what they face, just that the enemy, that we, are attacking them, attacking their forces, and so now they will arrive here and now," she cried out. "They do not know, they come in a multitude that not even this powerful vessel can resist. They come by the hundreds, and will overwhelm even this vessel according to my Sight."
She collapsed and Legion caught her even as two versions of him turned to face the windows.
"Let me know when you want me to call for those reinforcements I promised you," one said.
"Or not," the other said.
N'Skrek just nodded, turning and giving orders to the crew to prepare for a microjump to put them 'above' and 'away' from the point that Sacajawea had pointed out.
"Can she have lied?" N'Skrek asked, the Legion standing beside him as four others carefully carried Sacajawea off.
Legion shook his head. "No. I'd know if she was lying," he said. "She was filled with a trance, a fugue state, so the more mortal part of her wasn't there to lie."
"Hold off on those reinforcements until we can see what we are facing," N'Skrek said. He snorted. "I doubt the young lady fully appreciates the firepower the Gray Lady can put out."
"She was never military. She had some training, but not much," Legion said. "Still, she had a vision, take that as you will."
N'Skrek nodded. He turned and ordered up more Fruit Flies to be generated.
He'd have them launch as soon as the microjump was finished.
"Digital Sentiences, Virtual Intelligences report jump transit safety interlocks are engaged," came the word.
N'Skrek motioned. "Engage."
The painting appeared, but before N'Skrek could pause to look at it he was thrown through it, the image shattering into hundreds of shards of reality. They dissolved almost instantly.
N'Skrek only took a half-step forward as the ship entered realspace.
"Load the planet-crackers. Target the larger Mar-gite constructs. Let's see how they like that, since we don't have to worry about gravitational wobble," N'Skrek ordered. "When our new guests arrive, I want them to be focusing on the constructs."
"Fruit Flies are launching. Steam driven launcher only," came the report.
N'Skrek nodded, staring at the screen.
"I remember waiting to ambush the Mantid's Third Fleet that was heading for Sol," Legion said conversationally, as if he wasn't speaking about one of the most famous wars of ancient history. "Hiding in the gravity shadow of a supermassive gas giant, inside the rings themselves."
He turned and gave N'Skrek a grin.
"An Armada of One," he said. "No chance for the Mantid to overwhelm my brain, to shut me down. Beyond a Hive Mind, a singular mind with a singular purpose."
"Sounds exciting," N'Skrek said, watching the windows and the holotank at the same time.
"Very boring. I played a lot of video games and card games," Legion said.
"Against yourself, even an MMO would be solitary and single player," N'Skrek said.
"Ruins PvP," Legion grinned.
"I'll bet," N'Skrek said.
"The Sacajawea of that time stood on the bridge with me. She had shown me where the Mantid would take the most casualties and where I would be killed quite often," Legion said. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and N'Skrek hid a frown at the fact he didn't recognize Lucky Strike as a brand he was familiar with.
"Does it hurt when you get killed?" N'Skrek asked as Legion lit two cigarettes, handing one to N'Skrek.
"Very much so," Legion said. "Took me a few hundred thousand deaths to get used to it. Now, it hurts, it's terrifying, but not much more than clipping my fingernails," he sighed. "It's all right. I've always been, in many ways, less than human."
"You seem, to my albeit limited experience, to be very human to me," N'Skrek said. He took a drag off the cigarette and almost started coughing. It was harsh, raw tobacco with no additives and the filter tasting heavily of asbestos.
The Fruit Flies were scattering, going to full stealth, blinking their ready icons.
"Thank you," Legion said. He exhaled smoke. "Like the smoke?"
N'Skrek nodded.
"Gift from the Dee. Not the Detainee Lady Lord of Hell," he said, staring at the holotank. "But The Dee. The flesh and blood one," he gave a rueful chuckle. "Evil never dies."
"Harsh," N'Skrek said.
The missile pods flashed ready and went to stealth.
"Like her," Legion smiled. He suddenly looked a bit sad. "I miss her. Miss my siblings, the other Biological Apostles," he said. He sighed. "Sacajawea makes me miss them all that much more."
N'Skrek just nodded.
"Sometimes I miss the Digital Omnimessiah too."
"Ship is at silent running," came the soft voice.
N'Skrek stood there, smoking, with Legion standing next to him.
Behind them Mar-gite clusters were breaking up from a combination of the FOOF and the split second artificial singularities that exploded into existence inside their mass.
Perhaps I can't completely eliminate them, but I can knock out a measurable percentage since I don't have to worry about how it might affect a stellar system's gravity balance, he thought at one point.
Time slowly ticked by.
"How is she?" N'Skrek asked at one point.
"Recovering. I'm sitting with her. I had a medic look at her. Physically, she's fine," Legion said.
"She should be on anti-depressants and undergoing therapy. For us it's ancient history, for her the Glassing and the loss of her people, even her death, are recent events. She only died a short time ago," N'Skrek said.
"And you should be dancing for a comely matron and I should be somewhere helping someone correct genetic sequencing damage," Legion said. "Shoulda, coulda, woulda, didn't."
N'Skrek just nodded.
"Wait, can you see that?" Legion suddenly asked, pointing at the window.
"What?" N'Skrek said.
"The stars. A faint red-shift," Legion said.
N'Skrek looked toward the scanning officer, who frowned and looked at his instruments.
"It's faint. And large," Legion said. He motioned with his hands, using the smart-glass interface to highlight the area. "Right there."
"Nothing, sir," the scan-tech said.
N'Skrek tapped his lapel. "All personnel, prepare for enemy engagement," he said.
His voice carried over the intercom.
"Akka-Berry," Legion said softly. "They use a form of Akka-Berry."
The chrome ships suddenly appeared, wavering slightly like a heat mirage before solidifying up. They appeared pebbled and dull, like unbuffed and unpolished chrome.
"OPEN FIRE!" N'Skrek roared. He knew it was unnecessary, that the computers would give the fire order.
But it seemed to carry more weight as the PA repeated it.

Legion got into the elevator, waiting a moment after the doors closed to touch the panel. He overrode the alarms, then stopped the elevator.
The shadows warped and a light fog filled the elevator car.
It cleared to reveal a short Terran woman, with black hair pulled behind her head in a long braid, a severe face, plump, overripe figure, and gunmetal gray eyes.
"Well?" Legion asked.
"She's a child," the woman spat.
"I know that," Legion said. "Can you help her?"
"No, I mean, she's literally a child. Physically. She's never grown up," the woman snarled.
"Our aging was halted due to what we were going to do. The last thing we needed was a temporal sheer to kill half of us via old age," Legion said.
"I know that, you multiplying idiot," the woman snapped. "But she should have been allowed to grow into an adult first."
"She chose to stay young," Legion shrugged.
"And her brain has the neural pathways of a child," the woman snapped. She dug out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter of enameled steel. "The human brain doesn't fully mature until it's in its mid-20's. That's why we sent 18 year olds off to die in a rice patty or on some god forsaken beach. You need people who think charging the machinegun is a good idea, and teenage boys are well known for their excellent risk-reward judgement."
Legion just shrugged.
"But her, she's a child. Sixteen at the most, probably later fifteen," the woman said. She pulled out a cigarette, held it between her even white teeth, and lit it. "She has the mind of a teenage girl, a people known for their excellent decision making ability and capability to process trauma."
Legion just nodded.
The woman put away the cigarettes without offering one to Legion. He saw the emblem on the lighter.
"US ARMY ATOMIC COMMAND" in red block letters.
"You know how I feel about child soldiers," the woman said.
"It was The Glassing," Legion just shrugged.
"It's always something," the woman snarled. "Doesn't change how I feel."
"Can you help her?" Legion asked. "You're closer to her than I am."
"You mean, I'm as much a primitive barbarian as she is," the woman said, suddenly smiling without any humor. "I am what I am and she is what she is. Primitive savages from a time of hardship, resource shortages, and social upheaval."
"I wouldn't be so rude as to put it that way," Legion said. He smiled back. "But, yes."
The woman stared at the brushed steel wall of the elevator for a long moment. "I won't alter her SUDS record."
"Of course not," Legion said.
After a moment she nodded. "I can't help her, but I know some people who may."
Legion looked down at her. "Who?"
The woman smiled and exhaled smoke that filled the elevator car.
Her teeth and eyes were still visible.
"You'll know them when I bring them," she said. The eyes blinked. "Keep me in the loop for what's going on here. I have a feeling that events back home are going to have my attention pretty soon."
"I will," Legion told the eyes as the smile vanished.
The eyes closed.
Legion could feel it when she was gone. The smoke slowly cleared, leaving him alone in the elevator.

"What is taking this elevator so long to get here?" Jaskel asked 8814.
--not know computer says is moving-- the greenie replied.
"Aw man, Gunny's going to have my ass."

2024.05.28 17:45 kaacarter (30M) Existe um preconceito com as mulheres +30? (pergunta pra mulheres e homens)

French revolution of 1953 and its immediate aftermath (remastered)
Plans to coup the government
Last time we established rising tensions in France. Coup plotter started already in November, cooperating with the CIA (with instructions from president elected MacArthur). Since events in February and transformation of SDECE into DGSI anti-communist conspirators suffered major blow. French authorities looked with suspicion towards Gaullists and their allies and weakened their position and foreign connections. Gaullists were preparing their own coup, but simultaneously several generals and veterans of the Indochina war were preparing their own. Both sides did not know about each other. CIA and MI6 aided both groups and considered them both part of the same plot. DGSI managed to uncover parts of Gaullist's plot and did not know about Salan's one. With the destruction of the spy centre in SDECE, plotters were pressured to act quickly, it was only a matter of time, when communists would uncover their activity. Charles De Gaulle was already strictly watched by DGSI. Salan counted with the support of other right-wing elements, his plan was simple: Take power, then restore the presidential republic and install most likely general De Gaulle as puppet head of it.
The Coup
Funeral of Stalin was a major opportunity for putschists. As Thorez together with other high-ranking communists left for Moscow already on 7 March. Salan together with the CIA urged to launch the coup now. Preparations for action itself were thus rushed and in many parts improvised.
3:00-4:00 putschist paratroopers (only weaker and not numerous units, tanks and more units stayed behind Paris) go into Paris, they quickly capture Parliament, the main radio stations, PCF office building (empty at that time) and Élysée Palace. However, they fail to capture communist newspaper office, which proves one of the main mistakes. Salan bases HQ in Élysée Palace. Fights in radio are broadcasted by its workers who refused to give it to the military, they call all for help, shooting it's clearly heard in the last broadcast, leading to widespread belief (later proved false) that these workers were executed.
4:30 Radio and newspaper declaration of the Committee of Public Safety is issued. Salan informs about the creation of a provisional government led by the military to “restore order” and “protect French democracy and constitution” from communist takeover. Together with that, the resignation of President Auriol is announced. In this statement Auriol speaks about “drastic, but necessary moves” and speaks against violence (he actually wants to collaborate with Salan against Thorez)
Early morning: Issue of newspapers, communists and leftist newspapers change their headlines and inform people about the coup while calling people to resist the “violent reactionary coup of Salan’s clique”, similar statements are also issued by free radio, operating from the countryside. Both minister of interior Charles Tillon, minister of defence Laurent Casanova and chief of staff Henri Rol-Tanguy, weren’t captured, because they were not located in places putschists expected them to be, another major failure. The French Army was ordered to fight against putschist forces, as did DSGI. Charles Tillon also called for a popular uprising in the newspaper. Thorez was awakened by this time, and still did not react and instead rushed to Soviets for advice. De Gaulle was sleeping in his home, around 5 in the morning, when he was visited by several men from DGSI as the suspected coup leader. Visibly shocked and confused, the general pledged he is not connected to this in any way. He spoke with Tillon on the phone; communists vaguely offered him cooperation and division of power. Later, he was also contacted by Salan who offered him installation as president. General responded vaguely to both proposals, it is unknown what exactly. Both sides interpreted it as approval.
5:00-7:00 as more and more people wake up; spontaneous demonstrations started and grew more massive. CGT met up around 6:30 and declared an immediate general strike and a statement about clear worker’s loyalty to the Thorez government. During these Putschist soldiers shoot several demonstrators leading to outrage, people start to arm themselves by CGT and PCF (People’s Guards – GP Garde populaire). Fights, violence and bloodshed erupts in Paris, People’s Guards soon vastly outnumber sent garrisons as also parts of police join anti-coup forces.
7:00 Meanwhile, long announced Thorez directives and speech comes. His speech is broadcasted by dissent radio, calling for resistance, he also proclaims himself as acting president. He had to act on his own, because from Soviet leaders he received very confusing and mixed responses. While party leader Nikita Khruschev called for revolution and promised full Soviet backing including military intervention, premier Malenkov advocated caution and wished for a peaceful solution and MGB under Beria called it “internal matter of France”. Internally, Beria opposed any intervention in France and wanted to let it under Western influence to appease them, while Khruschev wished for formation of socialist state. Thorez decides to fly back to France.
Another announcement comes from vice-premier Pierre Mendès France, who calls for peace and negotiations, while leaders of RPF and the Third Force coalition give their reluctant approval for the coup.
7:30 Pro-Salan units prepared near Paris are sent to crush demonstrations. Barricades are set up to prevent their entry. Vast parts of Paris were controlled by resistance. Simultaneously troops loyal to the ministry of defence start to move from the North towards the city and secure control over territories.
8:00 US government recognizes Salan as leader of France, first US military aid arrives in putschist controlled ports, several hours later.
At 9:30 putschist tanks arrive in Paris and start the assault, soon violent clashes at barricades result in many deaths, but they don’t break the barricades at first. In the forenoon Revolutionary Workers and Students Council is formed and takes over political life in Paris, loyal units also arrive to strengthen the barricades. Salan declares martial law.
The Civil War
Ante meridiem chaos spreads countrywide. Worker strikes and communist revolutionaries take over factories and many local governments, in some cities, towns and villages opposite happens and anti-communists purge communists. First fights between opposing militants. The French Anti-Communist Legion is formed (LAF – Légion anticommuniste française), anti-communist paramilitary. Military units are in a state of chaos, officers clash amongst each other, soldiers decide to join opposite factions. Usually, it goes according to units’ allegiance, and several fights erupt. Major events happen in Lyon, where the local council is controlled by communists, who arm locals to rise against the military. Eventually the majority of soldiers rebel against the unit commander and join the communist forces. Vast majority of the navy pledge allegiance to the putschists, only those ships where its sailors take power from the officers, change sides. Widespread railway strikes and barricaded roads are major obstacles for putschist forces, it is hard to move to destination, problems with guerrilla attacks with Molotov cocktails etc. Both sides suffer from friendly fire as both government and putschist forces proudly wave French flags only and have the same uniforms or are civilians with guns. Communist forces started to wear red armbands later on.
Afternoon: Political moves to solve the crisis. Charles De Gaulle re-enters the scene and attempts to install himself as a provisional leader to end the civil war and restore order. He denounces violence and both putschist and communist governments in a radio address. He gained support of the political establishment and part of officers that remained yet undecided. Communists refuse it as they see him as another dictator, while Salan rejects it too as he wants De Gaulle first to recognize his government (and as he is closely linked with the US, Americans support Salan over De Gaulle too). Salan also feels betrayed by this as he counted with De Gaulle joining forces with him. De Gaulle has the support of many Frenchmen and hopes he can at least end this catastrophe; however, it was too late, and this attempt ended in vain. Another proposal was a “unity government” that was rejected by both parties. The strongest fights are in Paris. As also government loyalist troops arrived, it was a full-blown battle that continued also in the night.
In the Evening Thorez arrived in Germany, crossing to France is now risky as territorial control is unclear in the region and French zone in the UNMG. After his arrival he issues the Frankfurt Declaration, stating that “French people have to crush the murderous reactionary clique backed by American imperialists” and also words that would end up being misunderstood and later pretend to be intentional “continue revolutionary tradition of the French people and uphold the democratic and socialist France against reactionary plots.” It is understood as a call to full-blown socialist revolution and the next day people act according to it.
It is a chaotic mess, but to sum it up: The Ministry of Defence controlled by the first day of the civil war mostly these regions: Hauts-de-France and Picardie. Lightly contested government holds: Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Alsace, Basse-Normandie. Most contested regions with active fights: Ile de France, Rhone-Alpes, Region Sud, Languedoc-Roussillon and Champagne. Putschist forces control: Bretagne, Pays-de-la Loire, Poitou-Charentes, Aquitaine, Lorraine, Saarland. Lightly contested putschist hold: Centre, Bourgogne and Midi-Pyrénées. Areas without any significant presence of either military forces or without active fights between them: Limousin, Auvergne, Franche-Comte and Corsica.
10.3. Fights continue, start of full-blown hot civil war. Government forces launch an offensive in the Grand Est region to secure control of the border with Germany. Thorez declares martial law too. Battle of northeast France is the first major campaign of the civil war; Salan redirects some units from Paris there.
11.3. Key victory of the government forces in Paris and Ille de France. Salan and his government fled to Orléans. Government continues its offensive in the northeast. Thorez is flown to Paris by aircraft in a risky move in the evening. His presence is surprising and boosts morale.
Issue is the French zone in the UN zone. Units there remained unaligned. Both sides play each other and have its sympathisers here, communist utilise Germans for their goal. Thorez in Germany issues a proclamation that uses a loophole in the UN zone institution (that France has sole rights in their zone) and gives territorial control over the UN to Germany. Question whatever this is valid or not. French communists organise German protests for reunification. German Local Committee formed by SED takes over territory (13.3.), French units there give weapons to communists and surrender. Key move to gain access to Soviet aid. Trains full of weapons go to France through.
12.3.-13.3. Communist victory in the battle of northeast France. Frontline stabilises, rival militaries takeover all parts of the country by now. More uprising and local pockets. Major fights in previously contested or non-controlled parts of France (with exception of Corsica, that is secured by putschists), lightly held territories are solidified. Borders with Belgium aren’t still controlled by communists, while putschists gained control over borders with Switzerland, Italy and Spain. US and Italian involvement increase. The Soviet sent more weapons. Khrushchev proposes full intervention, while Beria opposes. These events are also important for Germany, we will get to the international implications later.
14.3. US proposes “French Resolution” it condemns French communists for violence and proposes UN peacekeeping forces to France, led by US and supporting Salan. The Soviet Union vetoed it and then presented their own resolution proposing the opposite on the next day, blocked by the rest of the Security council.
Late March: Solidified frontlines, communists try to push towards south to connect with other units.
After communist advances towards Orléans, Salan moved his government to Bordeaux, a key port and safe military stronghold deep in controlled territories (18.3.). Now styled as “Provisional Government of the French Republic” (GPRF), Salan becomes its prime minister. Majority parts RPF are brought there together with PRL, RGR and parts of MRP in hopes of organising a sort of democratic right-wing government, however, are used just as puppets by the junta. Position of president is (yes again) offered to Charles De Gaulle, who rejects it. Eventually Michel Debré is selected. Simultaneously Pierre Poujade, Jean-Louis Tixier-Vignancour, Jeune Nation and other far-right people join them. PCF and PSIF are banned and declared foreign agents.
After Thorez’s return to Paris, major political reforms happened. Several decrees, major important are: on nationalisation, on land reform, on revolutionary committees (legalisation of previous communist revolutions in various parts of the country), and the most infamous decree on protection of the constitutional revolution (20.3.) that established infamous People’s Revolutionary Tribunals (5 member groups allowed to carry execution without trials) and started massive purges of reactionaries, collaborators and vaguely defined “enemies of the people” from all functions and positions. Change to previous lore there is not yet declaration of the French Socialist Republic, only change in government and they still claim to be the Fourth Republic. Now stylised as “Constitutional-Revolutionary Government of the French Republic '' (GRCRF). 15.3. Thorez is officially inaugurated as president and Tillon becomes the prime minister, with some minor ministerial changes. In May rump parliament was recalled to Paris, consisting only of PCF, PSIF, independents and even some SFIO deputies. Parties aligned with GPRF are banned. This parliament institutionalised government decrees. Reforms are put into effect by the army and militias.
French civil war is brutal, LAF murders any suspected (key word) communists and their families without mercy during their night raids on villages, while Revolutionary Tribunals execute everyone around suspected of being counterrevolutionary or LAF supporter and also landlords and capitalists refusing to give up their property. But large military units engagements are quite rare, rather a lesser skirmishes.
In May, southern and northern GRCRF forces unite and stabilise their territory. Soviet aid increases. The US reacts with sending more undercover troops to France (they wear French uniforms and pretend to be French, but the majority of them don't even understand French).
May Decree and the Algerian National Revolution
Already during the Thorez’s famous after his return to Paris France is declared to be a nation without colonies and promises after the victory of “Forces of Peace, Democracy and Progress” all colonial status will be abolished and also urges colonial people to take their arms against reactionaries. Newspaper announces it everywhere, but authorities censor this message heavily. Start of the first protests and rebellions. 1st of May the “Colonial Liberation Decree” (also as May Decree or Labour Day Decree) is issued by Paris government, it in detail announces decolonisation and gives to all colonies and Algeria independence, with immediate validity. Key moment in the history of the colonial and post-colonial World. Salan junta tries to stop spreading of this information and local colonial authorities declare this Decree immediately null void (due to being from “illegitimate government”). About detailed response to this later, but we need to visit Algeria right now.
Salan’s declaration of martial law also applied in Algeria. Later, 13. In March, promised elections to the local assembly were cancelled. This led to massive anger from locals. As the front in France needed reinforcements, GPRF recalled the majority of garrisons from Algeria during April. After the May Decree, Algerians started planning a massive uprising, they wanted to take advantage of fighting in France and weakness of garrisons, National Liberation Army was formed and joined forces with local communists. Declaration of Independence of Algeria on 1 June 1953 (by FLN) followed by national-wide uprising and attacks. Due to the weak French presence Algerians saw great success and secured large parts of countryside and several major cities. Paris recognised Algeria as an independent country in June. Salan had to relocate a significant number of troops to deal with the uprising, another major blow to his war effort against communists.
Victory of the Revolution
In June GRCRF starts western offensive to push GPRF out. Despite American involvement, GPRF defences are broken by GRCRF and Salan ordered a retreat to Algeria on 12 August 1953.
In the epilogue of the mainland conflict, communist forces invaded and occupied Monaco on 28 August 1953 (Monaco cooperated with TATO in support of the putschists and gave refuge to their soldiers and supporters). Paris demanded Principality to extradite them to Paris, but they refused. As the army marched in the Monacan People’s Committee was formed by local workers with French orders, they declared themselves the legal government and abolished monarchy. In a staged referendum people of Monaco voted for unification with France (30 October 1953) This “People’s Republic of Monaco” existed as a de facto independent state until its official annexation after the French Socialist Republic was formed.
In December (8 to 20) there was an attempt to invade Corsica by airborne troops but failed due to very high military presence and Italian air support.
Humanitarian Catastrophe
Civil War leads to a large humanitarian crisis. Effects of which on specific countries will be specified later. Targets of refugees: Belgium and Switzerland (largest part), Italy, Algeria/Corsica, United Kingdom and Canada. More than 1,000,000 refugees. Since June borders were closed for those without permits.

AFERMACH (1953-1954)
French Socialist Republic or the “France-Paris”
Situation calms down and normalises during autumn, radical reforms continue, their harsh implementation is mitigated, Revolutionary tribunals are Dismantled (25 September). Revolutionary atmosphere still controls the whole country, various societal changes, and the promotion of socialist realism.
10 November 1953 new constitution was adopted – start of the French Socialist Republic, France is officially a socialist state, PCF obtains leading role, reformed administrative division, ministries and new National Assembly. Flag remains the same tricolour (to keep legitimacy), but a new coat of arms (variation with coat of arms exists and is often used, but it is not the official national flag). Political life and parties are also reformed, all organisations became part of the “National Popular Front” (FPN). PSIF and SFIO unite into the French Socialist Party (PSF), remnants of Gaullists and Christian democrats are allowed to form United Republican Party (UPR). 29 January 1954 election with one ballot.
In 1954, the start of voluntary collectivisation, new trials with supporters of the old regime and war criminals. Reforms of the military (French People’s Army, Air Force and Navy) with Soviet help and focus on militarisation. France joins CMEA.
In Autumn 1953 remnants of Salanist army and ACL were reformed into anti-communist guerrilla and terrorist group Organisation armée secrete (OAS, Organisation of the Secret Army), they are backed and equipped by Spain, Italy and the US. In 1954 the first terrorist attacks in other parts of France started. Continued insurgency and terrorist attacks in the Alps and Pyrenees are relatively strong, and France has to commit many forces to combat them.
French Republic or the “France-Algiers”
Truly one of the countries of the World.
Returning troops mean large problems for Algerians and they have to retreat to better positions, French push them away from major centres, but they keep control over many parts of the countryside. War continues.
Attempt to gain more people as settlers in attempt to solidify Algeria as French settler colony, similarities with Israel. This is mildly successful. However, majorly nonpolitical refugees are not interested in support of Salan and don’t want to move to another warzone and so they went mostly to Belgium, Italy and Switzerland.
25 June 1954: New constitution is adopted; the country is transformed into a presidential republic. Salan is unanimously elected by the Assembly as President. Transition to “civilian rule”. Toa address flag issue: officially only the tricolour is used, however (mostly in socialist bloc and later in popular culture) state flag with letters “RF” is used to represent it, unlike the flag of Socialist Republic, this one was used very rarely by the actual Salan’s regime. Creation of dual citizenship for French (full rights, can vote) and non-French citizens (not full rights, cannot vote or run for office), followed by several séparation laws aimed at Algerians (1954-1957), inspired by South Africa and the American south.
Other reforms brought by the constitution were colonial, the French Union was transformed into the French Community, in which colonies either became a direct part of France (departments or territories) or autonomous colonies (called as associate state). This was done by talks between local and French representatives during the Abidjan Conference (20 April to 21 May 1954)
FRENCH AFRICA
Note: Further autonomy and creation of local territorial governments Loi-cadre Thorez (23 September 1952).
Independentists, occupations
Guinea – In response to the May Decree, local independence-advocate Ahmed Sékou Touré declared independence of Republic of Guinea (26 May 1953), as the first former European colony in Africa. He proclaimed himself acting president, his position was confirmed in a legislative election (still free) in which PDG-RDA won in a landslide (17 October 1953). Touré recognised the Paris government and Guinean troops expelled weak French garrisons. New country aligned with socialist bloc and post-colonial states and became early examples for African independence and Pan-Africanism. Salan of course did not recognise this move, Guinea was even invited to talks about the status of Guinea in the Empire, but Touré rejected it as representative of a sovereign state. France was busy with Algeria and invading Guinea was not priority for them at this time, but Salan was not intending to let them leave, resulting in an attempted invasion (30 March – 2 August 1955) which was repealed by the Guianese military, due to French underestimation of the enemy.
Chad – June 1952, in local election nationalist Chadian Progressive Party, united in alliance with other parties against dominant conservative Chadian Democratic Union, won. Gabriel Lisette became prime minister. He as other African leaders watched events with interest but did not make moves first. French control in Chad was not restored by time of the Constitutional debates, Chad became an associate state, however Lisette declared independence of the Republic of Chad and recognised the Paris government just a day later (26 June 1954) irritating French authorities. France supported a failed coup in 1954 and then financed and directly militarily supported the rebellion led by Islamist Ahmed Hassan Musa since 1955.
Mauritania – Moktar Ould Daddah, leader of Mauritanian Progressive Union, followed a similar pattern as Chad, he attended the Abidjan Conference and then declared Mauritania independent (1 July 1954). He supported Algerians, which was unacceptable for the French, who invaded the country (2-9 October 1954). Daddah’s supporters formed a not so strong guerrilla resistance. N'Diaye Sidi el Moktar was installed as prime minister. Commissioner: Albert Jean Mouragues
Dahomey – In 1952 nationalist Republican Party of Dahomey led by Sourou Migan Apithy won local elections. Dahomey became an associate state and eventually Apithy declared independence of Republic of Dahomey (9 July 1953) and recognised the Paris government. France intervened in the country's politics and would later stage a successful coup in 1957.
Congo – Congolese independence left-wing activist Jean Félix-Tchicaya (Progressive Party of Congo) reacted to May Decree with official recognition of Paris government and declaration of independence of the Republic of Congo (6 June 1953), he was however opposed by substantial part of his party, that ended up splitting. Pro-French part formed UDDIA under Fulbert Youlou, they recognised Salan’s government, wanted to participate in Abidjan Conference, which Tchicaya rejected. Youlou went there, claiming to be Congo representative and called for French intervention, in response to this UDDIA was banned. French forces invaded Congo from Benin (20 September 1954 – 1 October 1954) and quickly occupied it, installing French administration under Fulbert Youlou. Some of Tchicaya supporters formed guerrilla Congo National Liberation Movement (MLNC), starting the Congolese War for Independence. Commissioner: Paul Louis Gabriel Chauvet.
French Sudan->Mali – Modibo Keïta (US-RDA) declared independence of the Republic of Mali in response to the May Decree and the fall of mainland to Thorez government (25 August 1953), however Keïta decided to participate in the Abidjan Conference under French pressure but rejected the associate state status. Mali was invaded by French Senegalese troops and quickly occupied, due to lack of any formal military (14-18 August 1954). Mali was united into the West African Union with Senegal after.
Cameroon – Ruben Um Nyobè, leader of the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon declared independence of the Republic of Cameroon after the May Decree (10 May 1953) and recognised the Paris government, denouncing military coup. Start of the Cameroonian Revolution, weak French units were driven out of the country by a popular uprising. Félix-Roland Moumié became the first president and Ruben Um Nyobè head of the council of ministers. Cameroon was declared to be a sovereign and socialist state. A Pro-French government was formed in exile in Gabon led by Ahmadou Ahidjo under the newly formed Cameroon Union party. France invaded the country after the Congo, starting on 20 October 1954 the Cameroonian war of independence. The first invasion was only semi-successful, and Cameroonians retreated to guerrilla warfare. Commissioner: Roland Joanes Louis Pré and replaced by French military leader André Zeller in 1955 (as part of power struggle with Salan).
Madagascar – National uprising (29 March 1947 – February 1949) brutally crushed. Thorez government moved to address this issues and Madagascar achieved local self-governance in August 1952. Local government was composed of PADESM (led by Philibert Tsiranana), AKFM (led by Richard Andriamanjato and one of released leaders of the uprising Joseph Raseta). Raseta served as the prime minister. Factions within the government were divided on how to respond to the new situation. Communist AKFM was closely linked with PCF and managed to convince other to declare “Malagasy sovereignty” (8 June), eventually Malagasy Republic declared independence on 8 May 1954, Raseta became president and Tsiranana leader of the new government. Election was declared for 1954. Madagascar participated in talks with Algiers government, however it ended with Madagascar not recognising them as legitimate French government and declared itself independent, but Madagascar recognised French control over other territories that used to belong French colony. Madagascar was lucky enough not being invaded but was subject to heavy political meddling from both French governments.
“Associated states”
De-facto French colonies, but with some autonomy and limited self-governance. Local prime-ministers and French appointed High Commissioners, who hold the real power.
Ivory Coast – Félix Houphouët-Boigny (PDCI-RDA), a key ally of Salan’s France, became its prime-minister. He was a supporter of the principle of creation of multiple associated states against groups that supported federation. Commissioners: Camille-Victor Bailly to 1954 and since 1954 Pierre Messmer.
Senegal->West African Union – Léopold Sédar Senghor (BDS) was a proponent of federation, but this was not favoured by Salan’s regime. He nevertheless supported maintaining ties with France and with their support managed to gain control over Mali under the West African Union. Senegal was despite his rule controlled de-facto by the French military. Commissioners: Lucien Eugène Geay (Senegal), Maxime Marie Antoine Jourdain of WAU.
Upper Volta – Henri Guissou (Voltaic Union/ UDIHV) became its first prime minister, he wanted to secure the country's separation from Ivory Coast, but had also independence sympathies. But his position was weak, as the country was divided into many political factions. He was viewed with suspicion by the French and was removed by the Commissioner (30 October 1955) and replaced by politician Gérard Kango Ouédraogo.
Togoland – Nicolas Grunitzky (Togolese Party of Progress) became prime minister. He faced opposition from pro-independence Sylvanus Olympio. Governor: Laurent Elysée Péchoux.
Gabon – Pro-French politician Paul Gondjout (Gabonese Democratic Bloc) was made the prime-minister. Commissioner: Yves Digo
Ubangi-Shari – Barthélemy Boganda of MESAN formed a government (30 May) after the May Decree but waited for further development. He participated in the Abidjan conference and advocated against division. He decided to accept this associated status as he thought declaring independence would lead to conflict with the French. Nevertheless, due to his nationalist ideas, he was quickly dismissed by the French Commissioner and replaced by Étienne Ngounio, who however continued to support the former prime minister. Commissioner: Louis Sanmarco
Niger – 1952 election divided between pro-French Union of Nigerian Independents and Sympathisers (UNIS) and leftist pro-independence Sawaba. Georges Condat-led UNIS was dominant in the assembly, so the followed others becoming an associate state, however Sawaba organised large protests for independence starting in May 1954, culminating in widespread riots. French authorities declared a state of emergency, banned Sawaba and sent in limited military forces in August 1955. Commissioner: Jean Ramadier.
North Africa
Morocco and Tunisia were already on their way to independence, so they immediately declared it after the May Decree (both on 2 May 1953). Both countries became constitutional monarchies. Tunisia – prime-minister Farhat Hached (Neo Destour) and king Muhammad VIII al-Amin. Morocco: Sultan Mohammed V. and prime-minister Ahmed Balafrej (Istiqlal).
Indochina already gained independence in 1952.

2024.05.28 13:04 Tokyono [Reality TV] You gotta be kidney me. The story of The Great Donor Show. A tale of organ donation and deception.

Note: I used google translate to translate all the Dutch sources in this post. Apologies for any translation errors, but I have 0 talent for languages.
I was going to write about the controversies of The Great British Bake Off, but then I came across this mess. Enjoy!
Just a quick note: there are two different types of organ donation law; opt-in and opt-out. In 2007, the Netherlands had an opt-in system. It was seen as very inefficient as it did not meet the needs of patients and there was a long waiting list. Most countries in Europe have an “opt out” system vs the USA which has an “opt-in” one.

The Doctor is in: BNN. Bart de Graaf. And The Great Donor Show.

Reality tv is a diverse genre. There are reality shows about dating, marriage, survival, cake baking, carpentry, …and now, organ donation.
In 2007, BNN, a Dutch broadcaster known for its controversial programming, announced that they would be airing a show called “The Great Donor Show”. It was created by Endemol, a Dutch production company that had created a lot of popular reality tv shows, including Big Brother.
The premise of the show:
It focuses on Lisa, a 37-year-old woman dying of a brain tumour. She must decide which of three patients selected by the producers, aged between 18 and 40, should receive her kidney. Viewers can offer their opinions by SMS text message.
In the Netherlands, organ transplants are subject to strict laws, which prohibit donors from choosing who will receive their organs after their death.
However, an exemption is made in the case of kidney transplants, which can be carried out while the donor is still alive, allowing the donor to choose the beneficiary if there is some link between the two people.
The three contestants were Vincent Moolenaar, Charlotte Trieschnigg, and Esther-Clair Sasabone.
BNN claimed that they produced the show in honour of their founder, Bart de Graaf, who died after waiting seven years for a kidney donation. The show was screened on the fifth anniversary of his death. Proceeds from all the text messages would go to the Dutch Kidney Foundation.

Every-body calm down: The Backlash

The shows announcement was quickly met with both international and national outrage, from politicians, television critics, and medical professionals. Dutch embassies were flooded with complaints . Even the Dutch prime minister at the time, Jan Peter Balkenende, criticised the show, saying it would damage the reputation of the Netherlands. Some Dutch politicians even called for the program to be banned:
CDA MP Joop Atsma wants to see if BNN’s Big Donor Show can be banned.
Atsma hopes that BNN will come to repentance. "The fence is with this program of the dam. A careful medical assessment is thus passed. What are people in the program judged? - On their color? - In their gender? To their sexual orientation?”
Atsma calls Minister Ab Klink (CDA) of Health and Minister of Culture Ronald Plasterk (PvdA) Tuesday to the Question Time in the Chamber. “I want to know if we can ban the program. There is a good chance that it will go against the law. I want to explain if there is a difference in selling an organ to the highest bidder.”
Ronald Plasterk weighed in on the situation::
"The intention of the programme to get more attention for organ donation may be applaudable," said Dutch Education and Culture Minister Ronald Plasterk.
"However based on the information I now have, the programme appears to me to be inappropriate and unethical because it is a competition," said Plasterk, who is a molecular biologist and former chief of the Dutch Cancer Institute.
In the end, the government announced that they wouldn’t ban the program, because there was no basis under the law for them to do so.
BNN’s then chairman, Laurens Drillich, defended the show and explained why they were airing it:
"The chance for a kidney for the contestants is 33%,"…"This is much higher than that for people on a waiting list."
"We think that is disastrous, so we are acting in a shocking way to bring attention to this problem."
He later added that in the five years since Bart De Graaf had died, the situation had gotten much, much, worse.
BNN invited Ab Klink to come onto the show and discuss what the government had done to solve the crisis. But he turned them down. In a poll conducted before the show aired, it was found that 61% of the Dutch population disapproved of the show. Interestingly enough, younger people approved of it much more than older people (44% of under 25s said they would watch it vs 13% of over 65s).
The Dutch Kidney Foundation welcomed the attention that the show had brought to the organ donor issue in the Netherlands, but said that “"their way of doing it is not ours, and it will bring no practical solution". However, the negative attention the show received, made them reach out and ask BNN to stop using their logo in the title of the show. BNN had not asked them for permission and had gone ahead and used their 2007 logo to replace the “o” in the word “show”.
The show aired on the first of June 2007. At the beginning of the broadcast, the presenter, Patrick Lodiers, highlighted the dramatic criticism the show had received, and at the end, he announced that the whole thing was a hoax.
If the vote had been real, then Charlotte would’ve won with 38% of the vote:
In the end, it was the most vulnerable of the three who made the biggest impression.
Twenty-nine-year-old Charlotte talked about the fact that she cannot even drink more than a pint of liquid per day, because that is all her body can handle.
Some 38% of those text messages were votes for Charlotte. However, just as "Lisa" started to announce who she was going to give her kidney to, the presenter intervened.
(Note: it is very difficult to find surviving clips of the program. It is considered lost media. I was able to find this clip on YouTube, as well as the ones linked above, but that’s it.)

It takes some guts: Donation and deception.

It was revealed that Lisa was an actress, but that the three contestants were all real patients in need of a kidney donation. They knew what was going on and agreed to appear on the program to highlight the organ donation issue in the Netherlands.
The reveal had a mixed reception. Ronald Plasterk thought the show was a “fantastic stunt” and that it had inspired him to become an organ donor. He was very happy that it wasn’t real. The then Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, was also relieved. Ab Klink still though the show was “inappropriate”, but he did find it positive that it had drawn attention to the issue of organ donations. Joop Atsma refused to change his stance, he continued to find the show “tasteless” and a “missed opportunity” and that it didn’t really contribute to solving the issue.
Foreign journalists were also divided on the show, some thought it was useful stunt, others thought it was useless. As for the Dutch Transplant Foundation (not the Dutch Kidney Foundation), they said:
The Dutch Transplant Foundation has sympathy for the staged Donorshow. “It reflects the desperation and need of patients well,” said a spokeswoman. At the same time, she warns that the show gives a wrong idea of reality.
"In reality, when donating when living, a thorough screening takes place. Medically and psychologically.
For example, we are not looking at whether there is any pressure on the donor," the spokeswoman explains.
In a press statement issued after the show, Paul Römer, the director of Endemol, stated:
"Let there be no misunderstanding, I would never make a program such as 'The Great Donor Show' for real. I do understand the massive outrage very well. But I also hope for people to understand why we did this. It was necessary to get the shortage of donors back on the political agenda. I call up everybody to get very angry about that, and to fill in a donor form."
In another news piece, he revealed that, after the show was announced, Endemol employees were bullied across Europe. A colleague in Germany was chased from his office, one in the UK was called a “Devil” in the press, and in Italy, potential clients informed the company that they did not want to work with them because of the program.
If you want to read more about how the show was made, and how the true aim of it was kept secret, then I suggest reading this lengthy piece on the Bnnvara website (it replaced BNN in 2014).

Let’s get organ-ized: The push to change Dutch law and the aftermath of The Great Donor Show.

The Great Donor Show was watched by 1.2 million people. At the time, the population of the Netherlands was about 16.4 million.
That same evening, 12,000 people signed up to be donors. By the end of the following week, around 50,000 had requested organ donation forms (this didn’t mean they had actually registered). At the time, the number of registrations for organ donation was about 3,000 to 4,000.html) people had actually registered and become organ donors.
In the months after the show, a group of Dutch politicians decided to get together and form the Coordination Group on Organ Donation. Joined by the Dutch Kidney Association, and many other medical and civil organisations, they presented a “Master Plan for Organ Donation” to Ab Klink. It would change the law in the Netherlands from “opt in” to “opt out”. Klink thought that changing the donor law in such a way was a step too far and rejected it. He did accept the rest of the proposal, which included measures such as “encouraging people to become organ donors, to ensure that next of kin would say yes more often, that donor coordinators were appointed in hospitals, and so on,”.
The law wouldn’t change until 2020:
The amended Donor Act came into force on 1 July 2020. It stipulates that everyone aged 18 and over will be included in the Donor Register. The Donor Register records everyone’s choice regarding donation of organs and tissues after death.
Pia Dijkstra, a Dutch MP who led the charge to change the law, said that: “The program (the Donorshow) has been very important in the drafting of the law. It has made the urgency of the problem. You should not underestimate that.”
In 2007, The Great Donor Show won the Dutch TV moment of the year for the scene when Patrick Lodiers revealed it was all a hoax. In 2008, it won an International Emmy for non-scripted entertainment.
As for what happened to “Lisa” and the contestants of the show, as of 2020:
Leonie Gebbink, who played Lisa, runs training and coaching firm ROER. She is happy that she can now be able to walk anonymously again. “I keep hearing: don’t I know you from somewhere? I don't usually call the Donorshow. I think that's a prodigy. As far as my career is concerned, participation has done me good. It is wonderful that makes publicity that people think in advance that you will also have quality, even though I work mainly as a communication trainer and coach and less as an actor.’
Vincent Moolenaar is also doing well. In the summer of 2016, he got a new kidney, after posting a call to it a year earlier on Facebook. Rehabilitation was successful, he told last March in the television program The Walk. Because he did his story there, Moolenaar did not want to cooperate in this article.
Charlotte Trieschnigg underwent a kidney transplant six months after the Donorshow, but that had nothing to do with the broadcast. ‘I had pulled Australia with a friend for a month with the backpack – a ‘Tour de Dialysis’ we called it, because I needed seven hospitals there for a kidney flush, that company still made it to De Telegraaf – and on the day after home I got a call for that kidney.’ After six months, however, things still went wrong. Now she wears a kidney she got in 2014, and it’s going well. Trieschnigg works with the mentally handicapped and also develops numerous activities related to her illness. “I started a website that informs what it is like to have kidney disease. Twice a year in the Radboud Hospital in Nijmegen I tell nurses in training about my own story. Last year I gave a lecture at the VU University in Amsterdam.’
Esther-Clair Sasabone also acts as an ambassador for the theme of kidney disease. With Moolenaar she founded Bureau Sterrenstof, an organization that she now leads alone and with which she supports chronically ill children. “I can go through that in length of years. We've made a children's book about Steven Sterman, a boy who gets kidney disease. At the end of last year a second book was published: Brothers and sisters. How is it for you? If your brother or sister is struggling with a chronic illness, you are also lacking attention.’ Sasabone calls the Donor show a personal turning point. “It was kind of coming out of the closet. Everyone knew about my illness.” One of her colleagues at the Muslim broadcaster offered his kidney the week after the broadcast. “I wouldn’t even accept such an offer from close family, let alone someone I barely know. It’s not just something: you have to get tested often, the donor’s blood must be very similar to that of the recipient.” Sasabone is now in her fourth kidney, which she received in 2010 through transplantation. She's good in her skin. “I just got back from a vacation to Japan. Both physically and emotionally, I feel better than ever.”
Thanks for reading. Next I'll definitely be working on my Great British Bakeoff writuep, unless something distracts me again!

2024.05.28 11:57 HeidiInWonderland Moving?

Written by Heidi and Lita in small pieces yesterday, last night, and this morning.
Part A
Lita: Yes, I did sign up with DeWitt and the East Bronx gym without a pause. Yes, Lita has talked to me many times about invisible racism and she has taught me how much racism is within me. She once told me that even at their best, a white person is a "recovering racist." And I'm just 16, live 50% of the time as the daughter of a black family, and will soon Scot-married to a black wife.
But I did feel those eyes when DeWitt was walking us through the gym and pool. Okay, I have no idea how I am going to travel up to the East Bronx two or three times a week with my schedule. But I am going to shut my eyes, grit my teeth, and just do it. It is time to trust Lita 100%.
Part B
Sea Shore was very crowded, even at the opening. It's that type of restaurant where you wait forever to order. Then you wait to get served. The real wait is to pay the check. In short, it's a great place to talk! And so much food!
Lita and Heidi talked to our parents about our future. We spoke about the wedding in Scotland and the RV Camp. Next, Lita's internship-turned-modeling gig. Next, her thoughts about touring in September (strongly leaning toward YES!). Next: CLEP and certification tests ahead for Lita and Heidi's Jammy/ALDI projects. Finally, Heidi shared her thoughts about 11th grade and the type of college she is prepping toward.
All wonderful and predictable. But where was the bombshell? Here it came:
Dad: We have become a family of six. Why not live as a single household? Why maintain two flats? Why two cars when we really just need one minivan?
Uhmmm, where are you going with all of this, Dad?
Pupa: Everything is pending our dawtas' approval, of course. But we would like to put both of our condos up for sale and purchase a property together. After lunch we are going to bring you to a building in the East Bronx that is up for sale. It's in a "mixed-use" zone meaning that people live and work here.
Lita: What??? You know you are changing our entire worlds!
Heidi: And we would really have to travel to get to school. And what about our districts? What about our baby group?
Lita: Does this mean you are going polyamorous and bisexual?
Mom: No!!! What makes you ever think that?
Lita: That would be so cool with us if it ever came down to that.
Muma: Shut your mouths! No!
Dad: Think about it. It would take about a year to retrofit the building. That's plenty of time for us to grow our SGI organizations and find people to take over our responsibilities. There's also a very active SGI chapter in this neighborhood.
Mom: The second floor would be an apartment for the Thomas's. The third floor would be for the Goldstein's. The first floor would be an open space for everyone, an office for the Thomas business...and a studio apartment for you guys.
Heidi: Now I am lowering my shields. And the basement?
Muma: We were thinking about a sound-proof music studio for Jammy and Heidi's practicing, a place where you could play us loud as you want all day and all night without disturbing a soul. And a space for a workout gym or dance studio if that's the direction Lita wants to take.
Lita: A lot of privilege, right?
Mom: Earned privilege, not unearned privilege.
Pupa: Very earned privilege.
Muma: We are going to meet the agent in an hour. Just don't say no until you have seen the place at least. Keep an open mind and we will talk more.
Part C
We met Mackenzie near a restaurant called Pio Pioon Cypress Avenue and East 138th Street. She's Central Casting for high-end commercial real estate broker. Even highlighted blonde hair, ponytail, and a clipboard.
Mackenzie: Welcome to our neighborhood. This section used to be called the South South Bronx. Then people started to call it Port Morris. A little bit West from here is what real estate developers call The Piano District.
Lita and I introduced ourselves. It seems our parents have already met with Mackenzie.
Mackenzie: Pleased to meet you. I am part of a consortium that has been working for almost three decades to build a private/public partnership trying to turn about 100 square blocks into a vibrant, mixed use community. We want to provide jobs for our residents in the local community as well as improve the infrastructure, public schools, safety, recreation opportunities, and health. Our group prospects for individuals and businesses that could help us achieve our aims. You fit this profile.
Lita: My school gives me the opportunity to do many independent learning projects. I know you are going to show us a property but I would like to learn more about you guys next year.
Mackenzie: Absolutely.
She also asked whether any of us were history buffs. We all raised our hands.
Mackenzie: There's a lot of history between 138th and 149th Streets. Did you know that the Morris Estates here were owned by the half-brothers Lewis and Gouverneur Morris, one a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the other one of the co-authors of the Constitution. In fact, just a couple of blocks away is where Gouverneur wrote the Preamble to the Constitution.
Lita: You mean "We the People"?
Mackenzie: One owned a plantation that had slaves right here, the other was a strong abolitionist.
Heidi: Wow.
Mackenzie: Exactly. And the ironworks for the dome of the Capitol was forged here during the Civil War. Not far was where Richard March Hoe invented the rotary printing press which made it possible for coming people to afford newspapers. A bit of trivia: right around the corner of the property we will be seeing is the place where the Morris Philip coffee cup lid was invented and produced.
Heidi: Unbelievable! I feel like I am standing on history.
Mackenzie: Let's go see the property. I wanted to meet you here so you could experience the walk from the closest subway stop to the property. The Cypress Avenue station is only three subway stops outside of Manhattan. I want you to gauge whether you feel the walk is safe! You should also come back here on your own on a weekday and night.
We walked under the highway and another four or five blocks, and turned right on a smaller street. "Here is your building. If you walk another block, you will hit the East River. You have here easy access to the Randall Island Connector which is a pedestrian/bike path to all of Randall Island. The South Bronx Greenway is unstoppable and is going to keep on developing. Can you see yourself being a part of it?
Lita: We are training to run the half marathon. What a great place to train. But is the run safe?
Mackenzie: That's for you and your parents to judge, of course. But, as you can see, there is abundant traffic here. The property is located within a mixed-use Zone which means there is 24/7 traffic. The New York Post and the Wall Street Journal have their printing operations just a couple of blocks from the property and there are always trucks coming and going. Many people run The Connector every single day and at all hours. Of course, you need to be wise and take precautions
We went inside this old brick factory building. It's a gut renovation. More on this another post. But we are excited thinking about the possibilities. At any rate, time for us to run! Central Park awaits.

Der Name steht für "I seek you", also: Ich suche dich.

ICQ steht für „I seek you“, also „ich suche dich“.

Oi!
Passo a Passo:
Dicas Adicionais
Bom Café!
