Chimney filled with soil. How much trouble am I in?
I was restoring this fireplace when, while sanding the surround, the "cap" that closes the metal insert (not sure that's the right word for it) moved a bit and a very fine (think plaster powder) started coming out. I decided to remove the cap to look behind and it seems the whole chimney is full of this soil-like very loose material. Is it possible they put the cap in place and then filled the whole chimney with soil?! Is this going be structurally problematic? ( I'm thinking of the weight of a column of soil where just air should be). We bought the house 2 years ago from a family that had it from the 80ies, and I'm tempted to ask them (we're still in touch), but I'm hesitant in case this happens to be a real structural concern and this ends up going to court... Am I being paranoid?

Flashing on chimney with vinyl siding
I had my roof replaced last year and they had told me I’d need to find someone else to do any of the chimney work.
I have 4 chimneys, 3 of which aren’t used so I had someone come out to cap those, tuckpoint the one with brick, and make sure flashing etc was all good so no water can get in to damage my new roof.
Does this look right? I’m most concerned about the one in the first pic with vinyl around it…

I have central heating with heat pump and aux propane.
The wood stove is a nice to have though!
Problem: when the furnace (heat or ac) kicks in, it draws in air from the chimney. It’s not good for my health.
I don’t use the stove often enough to justify installing fresh air intakes or whatever. I was thinking to toss the stove.
But it is nice to have for January and February.
So can I just stow it somehow in the off months? Like disconnect the chimney from the inside where it connects to the wall. Pop in some fitted insulation. Cap it off with something and seal it up? Is this a thing, do people do this?

Decent little Crack on my Chimney cap. Should I chisel out and fill with new concrete, remove and replace the whole cap, or just install a stainless cap cover (last picture)? I know I need to re- point a few of those bricks, which seems easy simpler than repairing the concrete cap.

How to Use on WhoWouldWin

For most of the series, Charles is merely a character with wall-busting power, moderately superhuman speed, and some cutting power very few characters in that stat range could resist. The main obstacle to creating fights involving him is the horde of EXP earners he can come back as, but this can be cleanly stipulated out by simply setting the fight in a universe without those earners, or without EXP entirely, which does have precedent in the original story.
Near the end of the series, his speed goes well into the Supersonic territory, he gains some alternate offensive tools that still lie in the same general range of power, and that absurd one-off feat against the Gaster. Depending on how far you stretch this, it adds up to either a slight general improvement with counters to specific forms of bullshit, or it gives him his own nonsense that can put him toe-to-toe with many abstract characters, rendering most other fights trivial.

Can I remove this fireplace/chimney?
I want it gone to open up the space as my dining table chairs hits the back side of it.
The chimney doesn’t hit the apex of the ceiling and there is no other support column on the other side of the symmetrical ceiling.
It’s a gas fireplace, I will have the gas capped before anything starts.
Also, I plan on just patching the hole from the inside and leaving the exterior chimney part on the roof.
Appreciate any advice.

  71. Despite the 1997 Kyoto Protocol’s status as the flagship of the fight against climate change it has been a failure.
  72. The first phase of the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), which ran from 2005 to 2007 was a failure. Huge over-allocation of permits to pollute led to a collapse in the price of carbon from €33 to just €0.20 per tonne meaning the system did not reduce emissions at all.
  73. The EU trading scheme, to manage carbon emissions has completely failed and actually allows European businesses to duck out of making their emissions reductions at home by offsetting, which means paying for cuts to be made overseas instead.
  74. To date “cap and trade” carbon markets have done almost nothing to reduce emissions.
  75. In the United States , the cap-and-trade is an approach designed to control carbon emissions and will impose huge costs upon American citizens via a carbon tax on all goods and services produced in the United States. The average family of four can expect to pay an additional $1700, or £1,043, more each year. It is predicted that the United States will lose more than 2 million jobs as the result of cap-and-trade schemes.
  76. Dr Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, has indicated that out of the 21 climate models tracked by the IPCC the differences in warming exhibited by those models is mostly the result of different strengths of positive cloud feedback - and that increasing CO2 is insufficient to explain global-average warming in the last 50 to 100 years.
  77. Why should politicians devote our scarce resources in a globally competitive world to a false and ill-defined problem, while ignoring the real problems the entire planet faces, such as: poverty, hunger, disease or terrorism.
  78. A proper analysis of ice core records from the past 650,000 years demonstrates that temperature increases have come before, and not resulted from, increases in CO2 by hundreds of years.
  79. Since the cause of global warming is mostly natural, then there is in actual fact very little we can do about it. (We are still not able to control the sun).
  80. A substantial number of the panel of 2,500 climate scientists on the United Nation’s International Panel on Climate Change, which created a statement on scientific unanimity on climate change and man-made global warming, were found to have serious concerns.

  95. Australia has stated it wants to slash greenhouse emissions by up to 25 percent below 2000 levels by 2020, but the pledges were so unpopular that the country’s Senate has voted against the carbon trading Bill, and the Opposition’s Party leader has now been ousted by a climate change skeptic.
  96. Canada plans to reduce emissions by 20 percent compared with 2006 levels by 2020, representing approximately a 3 percent cut from 1990 levels but it simultaneously defends its Alberta tar sands emissions and its record as one of the world’s highest per-capita emissions setters.
  97. India plans to reduce the ratio of emissions to production by 20-25 percent compared with 2005 levels by 2020, but all Government officials insist that since India has to grow for its development and poverty alleviation, it has to emit, because the economy is driven by carbon.

There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of CO2, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.

Reposting from tipofmytongue, no luck so far. Resurrecting an old unsolved post of mine that continues to bother me. My memory of it is far too vivid for it to have been a dream, I swear. Forgive me for rewriting my old post but I've been trying to remember this for 12+ years now and it's starting to irk.
I read this book back in the '00s when I was living in Scotland, probably mid-to-late, but I can't be exact. The book was written in English, and I got it from my local library. The target audience was Tweens, probably 10-13. It's doubtful it'd be classed as YA for modern audiences; the content wasn't mature enough.
I'm pretty sure the cover was a picture of the main character crossing swords with someone and a big flare of light at the point of impact.
I believe the name of the book was the name of the protagonist, or included their name as a subtitle on the front cover. What that title was is long lost. I was certain it was "Johnny Z" or "Jimmy Z", but having tried everything in that vein (Jimmy, Jonny, Timmy, Tommy, X, Y, and Z), I'm stumped. As far as I remember, the protagonist was named this since he was an orphan, and they didn't know his parent's last name.
The book had a very Douglas Adams feel to it with a wacky futuristic Earth post-ice caps melting, where Earth's cities float, and the culture/fashions have been toyed with by alien races (though they have since stopped messing around, resulting in the current trends). Military uniforms are covered in polkadots and transports are in the shape of starfish. The book is full of fun little asides that explain why things are the way they are, giving contexts for the absurd things which happen.
The setting on Earth is that everything is flooded, with lots of mist and clouds, with everyone living in floating cities. Later, they get a lift to an alien space station, before the MC travels back to earth briefly at the end to save it from destruction.
The book opens with the protagonist being bullied in school. Everyone has these hand-held tractor-beam things that the bully is using to hold something of the main character's out of reach (homework? notebook?). They have silly acronyms for the gadgets, and the MC's one reflects its inferior strength compared to the bully's.
The protagonist is a young boy, or early teen, whose parents are both dead. He doesn't have much going for him and gets bullied a lot.
Every year, the other inhabitants of the galaxy send Earth a message asking them to join their wider community, though Earth refuses. I remember the messages coming down the prime ministepresident's chimney. Earth's leader is an important supporting character; they are kind of the MC. Their second in command/deputy is a minor antagonist who tries to seize control of Earth while the leader is away.
The aliens send a message to Earth saying they want to have a tryout for a team of youngsters to save the universe. What is threatening the universe was never revealed, only that they needed to assemble a team. 4 or 5 human children are selected, with the MC being one and his Bully being another. They take off in a space rocket, reach and orbit the moon, before being met by a fedora-shaped ship which transports them to the space station where the selection process (try-outs) will take place.
While in transit, I remember them being kept in big glass bubbles, possibly with a view out into space. At this point, MC is visited by a multicoloured furry alien who ends up being on MC's team during the trials. There is a bit about burgers and how in the future, science has achieved delicious food that tastes like fast food but is nutritious and healthy.
The alien in charge of the trials looked a bit like a kangaroo.
The human children are split up into individual groups. The team the MC ends up on includes the multicoloured furry alien from before, a big three-armed alien, and maybe two others, one of which was a (non-human) girl I think he had a bit of a crush on.
At one point, it's revealed that the space station has some kind of normalisation field which makes everyone the same size, but in fact, the furry alien is actually really big, whilst the three-armed alien is very small. I also remember a rather novel aside where, when it's revealed that basically everywhere on the station is under constant monitoring, the three armed alien gets embarrassed and asks if they were monitoring when it did a number 12 (or some such number), and the book takes time to explain that humans are rare/unique/lucky that they only have to deal with number 1s and number 2s, but doesn't elaborate on what the other 10 possible types are. Witty kiddy toilet humour, for sure. There's no way I, as a pre-teen myself could have been so imaginative to come up with that.
They navigate the station via a series of wormhole-like discs on the walls, which you have to jump/fling/catapult yourself through. Personal size is irrelevant; anything can fit through one of these. These discs come back later as the method through which the MC saves the Earth by placing a pair on either side of the planet for their spaceship to fly through to avoid destroying it.
The selection process takes the form of a series of challenges that they have to train for. I remember one being a relay race in spaceships through an asteroid. Another was a sword fight involving special swords that take 800 years to forge and are passed through the heart of a star. Each sword is the maker's life's work.
In the room where they duel and practice with the swords, there is a diving board "thing" that protrudes over a gap around the edge of the duelling ring. The further along it you walk the more your worst fear feels real. The MCs greatest fear is the Earth being destroyed. He is told only people with great "inner laft" can make it to the end. MC sneaks in one night and walks the entire length, falling off the end, where he meets his mum and dad in some kind of vision. They talk before he returns to bed. There was some form of repercussion for this since no one is supposed to go into the training room without permission/supervision.
Eventually, after all the challenges are completed and the Bully's team are disqualified for cheating, the MC's team wins. There follows a party, something causes the world leader to have a heart attack, he "dies", but the aliens revive him with a "microwave". There's also something which causes the Kangaroo alien in charge of the whole thing to need to take a rest, and so uses some kind of time-dilation device to take a very long nap without anyone else being affected. If I recall, he then forgets to turn it off, racking up a very expensive electricity bill?
After the party, they return to earth, where the world leader confronts his deputy/stand-in who has tried to seize control and replace him as leader. The world leader ends up getting stabbed. MC then duels the bad guy using those newly acquired sword-fighting skills and beats him, but the world leader actually dies this time. Pretty sure the world leader was a widower and also took his death well.
MC places two of the wormhole discs in space to try and save the Earth from destruction, since the spaceship he and his team have to take to save the universe has to reach super speeds to reach wherever it is they are going, and to reach these speeds it requires a runway that happens to pass through the Earth.
On his return, he chats with the Kangaroo alien (I think this might be where the aside about the time-dilation bit comes up), who offhandedly mentions "laft falls" which are trust falls without anyone behind you but you trust that someone out there truly loves you and their love will catch you. MC suspects "laft" is actually "love" just mispronounced beyond recognition.
They depart, the ship doesn't destroy the earth because of the wormhole discs, and the book ends with the girl on MC's team listening to two others doing "laft falls" with pillows to cushion them (which doesn't work since they aren't trusting). She then does a laft fall whilst thinking about the MC, but it's not revealed if she hits the ground.
Other curious notes:
Honestly, at this point, I'm tempted to try writing this book myself and trying to get it published. At least then, even if it's plagiarism I'll have found what I'm plagiarising.
Would love to find this book again, it's driving me crazy that I can remember a story so vividly but can't name it or find it. I've probed ChatGPT and Bing Copilot but neither were any use. Amazon and Abebooks don't show anything useful for the variants of Johnny/Jimmy/Timmy/Tommy X/Y/Z.

Edit: I know it isn’t advised to get a home with someone you aren’t married to just yet but I’m not coming here for that.
Fiancé (23m) has no debt, 640 credit, and makes $30k a year. I (23f) stay at home with our daughter (1f) right now. I won’t be going on any paperwork right now, maybe not for a while. I have about 12k in debt and my credit is completely shot. In the 400’s shot. The house we are wanting to be able to get prequalified for is $55k. 2 bed 2 bath. Missing the toilet, the showetub needs tile, the chimney may need to be capped/recapped because there does seem to be some leaking, and the plumbing under the kitchen sink is missing. Everything else seems in great shape. My father is our realtor so we’ve been over to walk through a few times now. He says it’s completely worth looking into because for the price it’s in decent shape. Will FHA 203(k) cover this as part of the rehabilitation request? Should be go the conventional loan route? Is it reasonable to think we can afford this? We can comfortably put down between $3-$5k but I haven’t gotten in contact with a broker yet because my fiancé started this job early-mid January of this year, and we have to wait another week or two before we meet the criteria to check the prequal. Just coming to Reddit ahead of time with a bunch of questions before I speak to the broker. Does anyone else have other recommendations as to what we could ask the broker or other loans we might qualify for? We are so tired of renting because slumlords are rampant here and all it does is cause problems, and we are totally new to all of this. I just want to be able to give our daughter a stable home and not move her every year or two to a new house. Helpp😬

Since I bought my house, I've struggled with intermittent leaks on my chimney and it's flashing. First time I had a leak was about a year after I bought it so I hopped up and shot some poly sealant to buy some time. It held for a couple years before it started up again but now it seemed to be the chimney itself and the cap. I had a lot of spalling bricks and the cap was a total mess. Around the same time we got hit with a big enough hail event to buy me a roof. So after all the messing around with insurance, I found a Mason to rebuild the chimney from the roofline up ahead of the roof replacement. I scheduled it so the roof went on the day after the chimney went up. This is mid June 2023. Every single time we have had appreciable rain since then, it has leaked. I have had probably a dozen visits from countless people from this contractor come out and look at it. They always seem to say something different. Sometimes they say it's a huge mess and the flashing needs to be redone. They'll just pump Un some sealant while the scheduling people set up the refresh. Then nothing happens and I call in next time it rains and the next guy says it looks fine. We need to schedule a water test. Never had the same guy come our twice. We had a very dry summer last year so this was a really disjointed process and I admit I should have been more aggressive. Which I did this spring. The millionth time putting plastic over my TV and sound system really was the last straw. I got a hold of the project management manager through my former salesman (long story but the common thread is high turnover) and was assured this was as good as handled. Three weeks and several phonecards later, a new crew of guys comes out for what I hoped was a measurement for materials. But what to they do? A water test. Guess what? They found a leak. And guess what happened next time it rained after they "fixed" that leak... yeah it leaked even worse. At this point I had promised that next time these guys hear from me I would be considerably less cordial given my vehement opposition to the water test method. After an hour long reaming at 10pm Friday night, I had a crew of guys tarpung my chimney and in awe of how bad this had gone. Yesterday, the flashing was replaced. Today... the shit leaks again. At this point the water damage to my roof structure and ceiling is severe. I've had much more water in contact with my electronics than I'm comfortable with, and there is still water entering my home. Do I need to talk to a lawyer? Find another contractor and have them bill them? If my insurance company was worth a shit I would have already gotten then involved but thay starts tomorrow. This is embarrassing. I want to remodel my living room but not with it leaking like this.

Resurrecting an old unsolved post of mine that continues to bother me. My memory of it is far too vivid for it to have been a dream, I swear. Forgive me for rewriting my old post but I've been trying to remember this for 12+ years now and it's starting to irk.
I read this book back in the '00s when I was living in Scotland, probably mid-to-late, but I can't be exact. The book was written in English, and I got it from my local library. The target audience was Tweens, probably 10-13. It's doubtful it'd be classed as YA for modern audiences; the content wasn't mature enough.
I'm pretty sure the cover was a picture of the main character crossing swords with someone and a big flare of light at the point of impact.
I believe the name of the book was the name of the protagonist, or included their name as a subtitle on the front cover. What that title was is long lost. I was certain it was "Johnny Z" or "Jimmy Z", but having tried everything in that vein (Jimmy, Jonny, Timmy, Tommy, X, Y, and Z), I'm stumped. As far as I remember, the protagonist was named this since he was an orphan, and they didn't know his parent's last name.
The book had a very Douglas Adams feel to it with a wacky futuristic Earth post-ice caps melting, where Earth's cities float, and the culture/fashions have been toyed with by alien races (though they have since stopped messing around, resulting in the current trends). Military uniforms are covered in polkadots and transports are in the shape of starfish. The book is full of fun little asides that explain why things are the way they are, giving contexts for the absurd things which happen.
The setting on Earth is that everything is flooded, with lots of mist and clouds, with everyone living in floating cities. Later, they get a lift to an alien space station, before the MC travels back to earth briefly at the end to save it from destruction.

Everyone has these hand-held tractor-beam things that the bully is using to hold something of the main character's out of reach (homework? notebook?). 2024.06.04 21:40 HElGHTS Product suggestion to seal exterior of flue pipe / chimney for gas furnace

My 80% gas furnace (and water heater) vents through a probable Transite flue pipe / chimney which penetrates my low-slope ("flat") rolled roof. It is in good condition within the building envelope, but it's disintegrating badly where exposed to the elements, as the metal H-cap doesn't do much to protect it.
Location: NJ, USA
Date of construction: 1960

From the top down, we have the exposed section on the roof, through a crawlspace attic (about 3 ft in height), through the top story of the house (would need to remove sheetrock in the hallway for access), through the bottom story of the house (would need to remove sheetrock and tile in the bathroom for access -- but we are planning to gut that bathroom soon anyway), and into the basement where it transitions to round metal coming from the 80% furnace and gas water heater.
Idea #1: I guess I could replace the whole thing with B vent, and bathroom reno is the opportunity to do it, but searching has led me to believe this is unnecessary (example).
Idea #2: Can I just replace the exterior portion? There is a coupling in the attic (and it's within reach of the scuttle, so no need to actually crawl into the 3' attic) but I'm not sure if it can be uncoupled, or if the pipe must be cut in order to make a new joint. Either way, can it transition to B vent in the attic or just above the roofline?
Idea #3: Can I seal the exterior portion (DIY)? If so, what products would be good? As you can see, there are remnants of a prior sealant of some sort (silver in color) on the exterior which I guess would need to be scraped first. But I would also need to seal the interior for a foot or two, as you can see. Based on information from here, this one sounds promising: "Fiberlock Lag Kote (Exterior) white acrylic encapsulant/sealant paint formulated for use on asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and rated for exterior use, may be particularly suited for use on transite pipes; includes UV inhibitors."

Greetings all.
I'm refurbing my inherited Medium BGE. Never cooked on one, but my parents loved it dearly and made some amazing food.
I suck at "before" pictures, but the comeback on this thing is amazing. It was a whole different color and the base was stuck in mud halfway up the legs. Irony of why I didn't refurb the bands on day one is they didn't even look bad relative to the rest of the unit. Just $40 in right now - thermometer and draft door. Then some used casters and paint for the nest.
I was a little crushed when the firebox came out broken, but I learned it can both be used as-is and/or repaired with furnace cement.
Might as well replace the gaskets while I have the bands off, so that's the next step.
One video I saw, the guy wrapped gasket material around the chimney. Is that a thing? This one has no residual material or sticky residue. The daisy wheel cap is mighty heavy. Seems like it might seal itself.

New insert
Just got myself this new zorro insert. It seems reasonably well made, but it does seem to come with some issues. First ill note that I did take the metal bottom out in replacement for a felt pad (easier to fuel that way). Also it came pretty poorly packed. I opened it up and it seemed like they just stuffed one long piece of cotton in it Willy nilly. Once I cut the cotton into bits and put it in correctly it was fine. I also tried it in two different cases. A standard and my steel case 42 replica.
The standard case it was a tighter fit in. The first time I tried pulling it out I needed pliers as I couldn’t get enough grip on it. Every other time I took it out it was tight but easily doable. The other issue (possibly good thing depending on perspective?) was the lid. The insert sits in just the right way it almost caused a perfect fit with the lid. When you close it you hear a little “pop” and it almost locks the lid in place. So I found I had to “unlock” it with two hands prior to flipping it open.
The 42 steel case sort of had the opposite problem it fits slightly on the loose end. It’s easy to take out and the lid opens/ closes fine. But that little ball detent I believe is meant to prevent it from riding up. Unfortunately because it fits loose in the 42 it will eventually ride up. Not an issue if you use your zippo as it’s intended (which I do) but kind of defeats the purpose of the detent.
I do however enjoy that it uses a piston and coil spring switch rather than a leaf spring. I feel that they will last longer overtime, and I feel it keeps the lid more snug in place. I also prefer that’s it’s a solid metal construction, rather than a normal inserts folded sheet metal. I’ve also found with Mr zorro insert with the chimney cap that the teething on the strike wheel is more aggressive than that of a normal zippo insert. I like this because since I started using one. I’ve never had the issue of a “light strike” causing me to have to strike it more than a couple of times for it to light.
Overall though it’s a nice insert. And I feel with some breaking in it’ll probably work better. But I can’t help but to feel it would’ve been better without the detent and just the regular bumps. I’ll definitely be using it for a while before I come to a decision if I am to make it my new permanent insert or not.

We recently purchased a house with back-to- back fireplaces in the living room and kitchen that share a chimney. Both fireplaces currently have gas logs sets, but we’d like to convert them to wood burning. While capping off the gas line is straightforward , I’m concerned about what needs to be done to the flue and chimney to make it safe to burn wood. I’ve reached out to several chimney contractors but it seems that most are reluctant to even look at this job. Any advice?

So the brisket got overcooked. Had church and took the kids to the pool so I didn’t get back until it was about 215 internal. Awesome chopped brisket though! Just no slices. Post is more about first successful overnight cook. Used to have an electric smoker and only did overnights on pork shoulder and brisket. Now I know I can do the same just as easy on the Joe. If not easier as no cleanup - I’ll just do a pizza in a couple nights. Put charcoal up to the deflector plates with 4 pieces of smoking wood, lit a half chimney and threw it in the front of the basket, set vents once it got up to temp, and let it ride at 230 from 6pm to about 1pm the next day. Fat cap down and no problems with bottom being overdone. Now next time I might foilboat for the sole reason of saving all that tallow. My Joe is soaked in tallow that I would have loved to cook and bake with.
