Post trip report Two weeks with a toddler (Lake Como, Gardaland, Venice)

2024.05.14 12:41 More_Helicopter_688 Post trip report Two weeks with a toddler (Lake Como, Gardaland, Venice)

We just got back from a wonderful trip in the northern part of Italy with our 3-year-old. Having spent 2 weeks on one of our best trips so far, I really want to thank a bunch of fellow redditors who helped refine our itinerary and suggested places which otherwise would not have made it to our plan!
Day 1 Milan: We took a flight from India and landed in Milan in the afternoon. Milan was just the arrival point for us and we did not intend to visit Milan as such, so we ended up booking a room in the hotel at the Malpensa Airport itself. Nothing much that day; a bit of rest and a delicious dinner were a great start to our trip.
Day 2 Drive from Milan to Bellagio: Woke up after a good night's sleep (a much needed one after the long sleepless flight the day before). Breakfast at the hotel was really good with a lot of options for everyone. We had booked a car through SIXT at the Malpensa airport. Getting the car was a breeze with great service from the representative at the SIXT counter. The drive to Bellagio was a very good one. I was still getting used to the car, since I come from a land of right-hand drive and switching to a left-hand drive meant putting in a lot more focus on the road. Driving along the Lake Como was a fantastic experience. We reached Bellagio by lunch time and our AirBnB was ready for us. The rest of the day was at leisure, with a casual walk around Bellagio, through the city center and along the lake.
Day 3 Bellagio to Varenna: Took a ferry to Varenna and had breakfast at a lake side cafe. With great weather on our side, a cup of coffee and a little pastry seemed more blissful than we thought of! We had signed up for a picnic on the hills of Camaggiore, a 40-minute drive from the Varenna ferry station. We had our representative waiting for us and she drove us to the picnic spot, sharing tales from the towns of Lake Como, showing us amazing views along the way. The picnic itself was surreal, with the most beautiful view of the lake from 1200 meters above. We spend the rest of the day exploring Varenna at our pace, while our little one slept like a log in the stoller.
Day 4 Bellagio: After debating weather to visit the Como town or not, we decided to stay in Bellagio in explore the town a bit more. We took a ride of the Bellagio Express, the toy train that takes you around the town. It was a fun ride, intended for our toddler, who decided to doze off in the train itself! Post that, we saw the gardens of the Villa Melzi. We had rented a boat to explore the lake ourselves during the evening, but rainy weather made us cancel our plans. We spent the rest of the evening, relaxing at our AirBnB, overlooking the lake.
Day 5 Drive from Bellagio to Gardaland: Moving on to the next leg of our trip, which was clearly planned keeping our little boy in mind, we drove to Gardaland reaching there by noon. Thanks to a wonderful fellow Redditor, we got introduced to this wonderland called Gardaland! Our stay was booked at the Gardaland Hotel and while we were waiting for our room to get ready, we decided to pay a visit to the Gardaland Resort park right away. A drizzly weather kept most of the visitors inside the SEA Aquarium, but that also meant we had absolutely no waiting times on most of the rides in the park! The little one was elated to see the Peppa Pig Land, and refused to move away from it. All in all, day one in the park was a super success despite the wet weather. Evening at the hotel was full of fun-filled activities for the kids. The entertainment team at Gardaland Hotel did a fabulous job at keeping kids engaged.
Day 6 Gardaland: Our second day in the Gardaland park was a much more planned one, since we had already explored some of the park on the previous day. We knew the rides we wanted to go on, and so logistics were simpler. Weather was great too, and so we had a wonderful time! The park has a plethora of options to eat, with a ton of sweet treats along the way. The park is huge but very well laid out with clean facilities. Naturally, day two also could not be completed without visiting our favorite Peppa Pig! Evening at the hotel was again fun-filled with the team at Gardaland doing what they do the best!
Day 7 Parco Natura Viva: Gardaland is in proximity to a lot of amusement parks and points of recreation for family and friends. One of them is Parco Natura Viva, a zoo with a drive-through safari. It was a Saturday and the zoo had enormous waiting times for the cars to enter the Safari. After having waited in the queue for over an hour, we finally started the Safari, which turned out to be pretty great. Next, we had the fauna park (the walkable part of the zoo), the one with animals in their enclosures. With the entire park divided into geographical zones, it was fun seeing animals from various continents. The place is well-maintained, and creates a great experience for kids.
Day 8 Verona: We had kept an extra day in Gardaland just in case the little man wanted to visit the park again. However, given the proximity, we decided to do a day trip to Verona instead. We drove to Verona and parked our car in one of the paid parking lots. We had reserved a morning slot for a walking tour, that took us through the streets of Verona, with our very knowledgeable guide sharing tales from historic Verona, the castle and gate to the old city center. The center was bustling with stores and eateries. Very touristy but was all the more fun! Our taste buds were craving for some Indian food and we ended up having lunch at an amazing Indian restaurant named "Maharajah". The food was delectable with very prompt service. As touristy as it sounds, we did go to "Casa di Giulietta", commonly known as Juliet's house that is known for the legacy of Romeo and Juliet having been inspired from there. The so-called Juliet's balcony is missable at best.
Day 9 Drive from Gardaland to Venice: Switching to the last leg of our trip, this was supposed to be the wife's part of the trip. She has wanted to visit Venice for as long as she remembers, and this trip could not have happened without a leisurely stay in the city of canals! This was also the last day of us keeping the car, and we drove to Venice Marco Polo Airport where we returned the car at the SIXT counter. Once again, just like the pick-up the return process was extremely smooth and lasted barely a couple of minutes. Our plan was to catch the Alilaguna airport water bus to the main island, but we decided to splurge at the last moment and took the water taxi instead. And boy were we happy! The water taxi is an experience in itself, especially when entering the canals from the airport. Our AirBnB was located right on the Grand Canal, giving us uninterrupted views of the Canal. For a place that looked better in person than in pictures, what more could we have asked for! We spent the evening walking to the Rialto Bridge, people-watching!
Day 10 St. Marks square and Dodge's Palace: After a good night's sleep, we woke up refreshed, taking in the morning views of the Grand Canal, with the gondola's and the various boats floating by, doing their chores for the day. We had booked a tour of the St. Marks square and the Basilica, along with the Dodge's Palace. Unfortunately, it had to be a rainy day. While we still participated in the tour, the place became very crowded because a lot of people tried to maximize on the time indoors to avoid the rain. Nonetheless, it was a good experience. The little one dozed off in the Basilica and so we let my wife carry on with the tour of the palace, while I took a table under an umbrella at the Cafe Lavena to get myself some coffee, and to let my son enjoy his sleep. We spent the evening loitering around the Rialto market, spoiling ourselves with a few gelatos at Suso!
Day 11 Murano, Burano and Torcello: We woke up early, fixed ourselves some breakfast and were ready to leave. We had booked a tour of the 3 islands and our job was to get to the meeting point as soon as possible. Unfortunately, we missed our group and had to visit the islands on our own. The upside to this was that we could do it at our own pace! This included having a hearty lunch at a beautiful local cafe in Torcello. This place had a chidren's play area too! This also meant spending more time than necessary in Burano, because why not? We loved the colorful houses on the island and we just wanted to be there, taking in everything it had...
Day 12 Leisure and Photoshoot: My wife and I generally have this idea of booking a small photoshoot at every exquisite location we visit. This not only gives us great pictures for memories, but it also allows us to see areas which we would otherwise not know existed. We booked this experience through AirBnB and our photographer was a wonderful man, very learned and a true Venetian at heart! He took us to places that were free of tourists, for some amazing pictures. Not only that, he also arranged for a special Gondola ride for us, which took us through the narrower canals of Venice, adding to the already special experience. A trip to Venice is really incomplete without a Gondola ride, and we were glad we could! This was the last evening of our trip and we could not conclude it without a few more Aperol Spritz's and Gelatos from Suso!
With every trip we take, we learn a lot, that helps us make our future trips better. We consciously chose to skip the more popular locations like Rome and Florence (Tuscany), since we wanted to have ample time of leisure and just do nothing, with a toddler who wanted to just be.
If I could summarize the learnings of this trip, they would be:

2024.04.22 04:45 HeadDiligent9757 Where to stay—Lake Como, Late June

Hello! Hoping someone can help me out here—my family and I are traveling to Lake Como in late June for 4 nights. (Ages 46, 47, 10, and 76). We’d like to see Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio, but don’t know where to stay. We thought we’d like to be at the heart of Bellagio so we could enjoy the quieter nights when day trippers leave, but now I’m panicking a little that my plan to hop on over to the other towns to visit is going to be a bust because of massive crowding and lines to get on the ferry. I really hate packed crowds when I’m traveling, so I’m guessing this isn’t the place for me—but I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Bellagio—am I going to hate it? I thought about staying somewhere quieter and driving in, but then is parking impossible? I’ve also heard that getting a taxi is a nightmare. Is there a lovely town outside of Bellagio that would be a better place to stay, that still has great restaurants and cafes and views and such, but is less of a nightmare during peak season? I’m seriously bummed out from what I’m reading. Thanks in advance—

20 days of summer in Europe (Italy-France-Switzerland: A trip report (kind of)
Hello! Since I've been getting some replies to my older comments as well as direct messages about our summer trip, I've decided to put together this little trip report.
SOME BASICS:
  • Travel dates: Aug 5 to Aug 25, 2023
  • Countries: Italy, France, and Switzerland
  • Points of entry + exit: Rome then Milan
  • How many pax: 11 (3 senior citizens, 1 minor, 7 adults)
  • Airline: For the Manila contingent, Emirates
  • When did we apply for our Schengen visa: April 12
  • Did you get a local sim: Yes, Vodafone 30GB of data valid for a month. I think I only paid 34 euros. It didn't work in Switzerland.
  • Did you get a pocket Wi-Fi: We did with Travel Recommends. Slow in Italy and France, fast in Switzerland.
  • Where did you get your money exchanged: Had my MIL change my money to USD, then exchanged at the airport. In Interlaken I paid in euros and got my change in francs.
ITINERARY:
https://preview.redd.it/3goqjg7l7zuc1.png?width=604&format=png&auto=webp&s=c022d253e62b7fd8ecd85fea764d64a50fb275fa
https://preview.redd.it/au3vfg8s7zuc1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=c695a16fd5b237468bf193c76f48e4f1b544e14d
Some thoughts:
  • Take advantage of the free Sundays in Italy: Most of the cities have this program where you can go to the major historical sites and museums for free (w/ a small fee if you book online). I got to use this when we visited Galleria Borghese, where I only paid 4 euros for two people (regular tickets are 13++)
  • Take advantage of discounted ticket rates: Many attractions offer discounted ticket rates for certain times (early morning or past 6PM) to help with crowd control. For example, I only paid 18 euros each for Uffizi instead of 25 euros for their early bird ticket (8:15AM).
  • Summer in ITA/FRA/SWI isn't that hot: It's not humid, which makes the heat bearable. I prefer summer temps there than this weather we're currently having in Manila (at least I kinda look fresh in pics??). Evenings can also be chilly so do bring a light sweater or cardigan.
  • In Italy, expect some stores/restaurants to be closed during Ferragosto week: This is one of their major holidays, so most Italians take advantage and head out to the beach for their summer vacation. We caught Ferragosto in Venice; the city was still bustling.
  • Trenitalia's website is easy to use: The site will also recommend routes with other train companies depending on your destination. We booked our train tickets two months ahead of our trip to get reasonable rates.
  • If you're with a big group (10+pax), book a private tour instead: Many tour companies like GetYourGuide and Viator have limitations with group bookings, so if you can afford it, arrange for a private tour instead. Some attractions also have group limitations and require special arrangements for 10+ pax.
  • Reservations/tickets to major attractions sell out fast in the summer: Research when slots typically open and book your tickets wayyy ahead of your trip.
  • Always remember to say hello, thank you, and goodbye in the local language: It's just nice and shows you're making an effort even if the waiter or shopkeeper is already grumpy. Remember that July-August are the peak summer months, so a lot of the people working in the hospitality industry are overworked to the bone. Play nice.
  • If you want to see other towns, pick a base city: Best applied if you want to see as much of Tuscany as possible. Use Florence as base city, then take the train to wherever you want to go. Many of the hill towns don't allow cars inside their core areas anyway.
  • Don't go to Amalfi Coast without a plan: There aren't a lot of things to do there aside from swimming, sunbathing, dining, and luxury shopping. In Positano we spent the rest of the afternoon tanning like them Italians haha. Also, instead of Sorrento, use Salerno as your jump-off instead.
  • As much as possible, book things directly: Whether you're booking flights or train tickets, don't book with third-party apps. For train travel in Italy, go with either Trenitalia or Italo. In France, use SNCF Connect. In Switzerland, it's SBB/CFF/FFS (it's a trilingual country).
  • A lot of the public restrooms have fees: So if you want to avoid that, use the restroom every time you're dining in a cafe or restaurant. Some establishments give out stubs to let the attendants know you're a paying customer.
RECOMMENDED PLACES TO VISIT:
  • Rome: Go everywhere you can; that city is RICH af. History everywhere. If you're an art lover, I highly recommend going to Galleria Borghese and Galleria Doria Pamphilj. Rome was also Bernini's playground, so try to find as many of his public sculptures (Piazza Navona, the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa at Santa Maria della Vittoria) but his major ones (rape of proserpina, etc) are in Borghese.
  • Florence: It gets crowded but I think everyone should at least watch the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo while they're in Florence. Uffizi of course for art (Michelangelo, some unfinished Da Vinci), etc. There are also a lot of underrated art museums in the city, like Bargello. In Siena (one of the Tuscan hill towns), there's a church that houses the mummified head of St. Catherine of Siena. I'm not religious but I do love a good relic or two haha.
  • Venice: Crowded but SO GOOD. Just explore the labyrinthine streets and soak in the vibes. Especially beautiful at night. If you like relics, do visit Saint Mark's Basilica.
  • Lake Como: Head early to Varenna for breakfast, then lunch at Bellagio. That way, you can avoid most of the crowds, which visit the area later in the day. Bad move, IMO, because an earlier trip means cooler temps.
  • Lyon: They have a Gallo-Roman amphitheater that's free to the public and overlooks the city of Lyon. Walk around Vieux Lyon and try to spot their traboules. This was the capital of French resistance during WW2.
  • Paris: Do all the things you want to do and don't let other people tell you otherwise. Just be wary of the metro pickpockets. I personally had an altercation with two OTW to Arc de Triomphe. We picnicked at Champs de Mars, so that's nice. If I can go back, I would love to go to the Orangerie.
SCHENGEN VISA APPLICATION THINGZ:
  • We applied via VIA PIASI. I think we paid around 4k each. We also only walked in.
  • We applied as a family with my parents-in-law as the main financial sponsors. Because of that, we had to have copies of their business and financial documents as well. My application folder was like two inches thick because of all of that paper.
  • Even though we applied as a family, they still assessed each application individually (which was why we needed copies of my in-laws' documents).
  • I had around 500k in my main bank account, plus a hundred more in my joint account.
  • We got our visas around the second week of May. For me and my husband, we also received notes stapled to our passports that instructed us to report back to the embassy within 10 days of our return.
I think this should cover most of the trip! I hope this helps.

Escaping the glitz of Las Vegas for a day, we embarked on a whirlwind adventure to Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. Here's a breakdown of our experience:
The Journey:

Antelope Canyon:
The star of the show, Antelope Canyon, is a breathtaking labyrinth of swirling sandstone walls. Sunlight filtering through creates a mesmerising display of colours, from fiery oranges to deep purples. Tours are guided by members of the Navajo Nation, who share their cultural knowledge and ensure visitor safety on the uneven terrain. Photography restrictions are in place due to the sacredness of the site, so be prepared to commit the scenery to memory!
Horseshoe Majesty:
Horseshoe Bend is a natural wonder unlike any other. A short hike leads you to a dramatic overlook where the Colorado River snakes through a horseshoe-shaped canyon. The sheer scale and power of nature are awe-inspiring.
Lunch:
Lunch is included in the tour and is a welcome break amidst the day's adventures.
Overall:
This tour is a fantastic way to experience the otherworldly beauty of Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend in a single day. While the long drive might deter some, the comfortable transportation, knowledgeable guides, and the unforgettable sights make it a worthwhile adventure. Las Vegas isn't just about casinos and buffets! For adventurous foodies, there's a hidden world of deliciousness waiting to be explored. Here's a glimpse into our experience on a secret food tour that tantalised our taste buds and defied expectations.
Off the Beaten Path:
Unlike the usual tourist traps, this tour ventures into lesser-known pockets of Vegas, showcasing the city's diverse culinary scene. Expect hidden cafes, trendy restaurants tucked away in backstreets, and unique local gems. Our tour guide was a passionate local with an encyclopedic knowledge of the city's food scene, offering fascinating insights into the chefs and inspiration behind each stop.
A Taste of Hell's Kitchen (Without the Yelling!) - Visit 1 out of 6 of Gordon's Restaurants.
One of the highlights was a visit to Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen restaurant. Yes, you read that right! This exclusive tour bypasses the usual crowds and gets you a taste of Ramsay's culinary artistry without the fiery atmosphere of the TV show. We sampled a selection of signature dishes, each bursting with flavour and showcasing the restaurant's meticulous attention to detail.
Sweet Treats on the "Sicilian Beach"
Next, we were whisked away to a place called the "Sicilian Beach." Intrigued? This wasn't a real beach, but a charming Italian gelateria boasting an extensive selection of authentic gelato and sorbetto. The rich, creamy concoctions were a delightful way to cool down and indulge in a taste of Sicilian sunshine.
Gourmet Pizza with a Wellness Twist
The final stop defied expectations yet again. We ended the tour at a pizzeria founded by Dr. Andrew Weil, a renowned integrative medicine expert. This wasn't your average pizza joint; here, we devoured pizzas made with fresh, seasonal ingredients and whole-wheat crusts, proving that healthy can be absolutely delicious.
Value for Money:
Considering the quality and quantity of food, the variety of experiences, and the insider knowledge shared by the guide, this secret food tour offered fantastic value for money. It's a perfect option for those who want to delve deeper into the Vegas food scene and discover hidden gems beyond the glitzy facades.

The highlight of the tour was landing at the bottom of the Grand Canyon for a champagne picnic. This was a truly unique experience and one that I will never forget. The views from the canyon floor were incredible and it was a great opportunity to take some amazing photos.
We highly recommend Maverick Helicopters for anyone looking to see the Grand Canyon from a different perspective. The service was top-notch, the views were breathtaking, and the experience was truly unforgettable. It was definitely worth the investment and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Escaping the glitz of Las Vegas for a day, we embarked on a whirlwind adventure to Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. Here's a breakdown of our experience:
The Journey:
Most tours depart early from Las Vegas, so brace yourself for a pre-dawn wake-up call. The upside? Comfortable air-conditioned transportation with ample legroom. The drive is long, but the guides are fantastic, regaling you with tales of the region's history and geology.
Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring sun protection, and be prepared for the desert heat.

Days Itinerary:

  1. Hotel Pickup
  2. Horseshoe Bend (Guided tour)
  3. Antelope Canyon (Guided tour)
  4. Lake Powell (Photo stop)
  5. Page, Arizona (for a delicious lunch!)
  6. Hotel Drop-off
Pro Tip: Book your tour well in advance, especially during peak season, as these natural wonders are understandably popular

Secret Food Tours Las Vegas

https://preview.redd.it/mewpdi8e4guc1.png?width=2938&format=png&auto=webp&s=427d32e4656ff9487b0279b397ebe179c6cb85a5
Las Vegas isn't just about casinos and buffets!

2024.02.28 14:20 SenshineSehee Day Trip from Milano: Can I visit Varenna + Bellagio + Como within one day?

Hello guys! I will be travelling to Milan at the end of march (20th - 25th). But I don't want to spend all five days there. I would also like to make a day trip somewhere. Many people here recommend a day trip to Como and/or Varenna + Bellagio. But I am not sure if it's a realistic goal to visit all three places within 1 day. And does that even make sense or would I miss out on a lot if I just rush though?
My main goal for this day trip is just to enjoy a nice scenery and maybe sit in a nice cafe or restaurant by the lake. I don't necessarily need any exciting activities or lots of sightseeing.
What do you think? Do I even need to see all three of them? And if it doesn't make sense to visit all places on the same day: which of these places should I skip/not skip?
Thank you so much for your help! And if you know certain restaurants/sights that I should absolutely check out there, I will also be grateful for your suggestions.

2024.02.24 01:21 DannyB_99 Lake Como Afternoon Trip from Milan - Which areas to visit?

Hi, I'm visiting Milan in mid-April for a few days for business and I have a weekday afternoon free which I would love to use to see Lake Como. I've agreed to see some friends in the evening in Milan so would need to be back at my hotel near Milano Centrale for (around) 7pm.
I'm looking for the best view of the lake, something I can set my wallpaper to :), in addition to a walk and a nice cafe to grab a drink. I've seen someone very kindly made an entire itinery for a day trip, but as I only have an afternoon I think I'll only have time to see one town without being super rushed.
I've seen that it takes 1hour to get to/from Como S. Giovanni, so was wondering which town would be best to head to from there; perhaps Tremezzo or Bellagio? Or perhaps head straight to Varenna from Milan? I'm open to any suggestions! I know it will be quite a rushed trip, and I'll likely only see Lake Como for a few hours at most, but I still think I'd like to go. I'll book an extended holiday another time and stay in a few locations around the lake, as it is one of the places on my bucket list.
Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Dan

2024.02.16 20:42 masterox7737 Trip Report - Bellagio 2-Night, Maverick Vegas Views, etc.

Hi all!
Wanted to report on my most recent trip and all my redemptions.
TL;DR: Redeemed 1,322,200 LP, and got an estimated $1,354.22 in value over the course of two-ish days. Keep in mind that I'll break out value estimates but those may be a little off. The estimates are including taxes/fees and for the nearest similar time/dates I could find. Spent $244.33 for resort fees, other half of restaurant offers, taxes, and fees.
The biggest piece of that (estimated at $904.78, redeemed for 225k LP) was the two-night stay at Bellagio. When I booked for Feb 14th - Feb 16th, only a Resort Accessible Room was available to be booked - but it seems like the front desk correctly assumed I didn't need one and I got put into standard Premier King instead. There was something going on during my trip at the Belalgio conference center so prices were probably even more elevated than normal. Keep in mind that the resort fee was $45 nightly, plus around $6 in taxes for the fee - so the stay wasn't free as much as it was heavily discounted. Room was as nice as I remember from my previous non-myVEGAS stay here, though that other room had a tub which I missed not having in this one. The Premier King shower is oddly long. There was a relatively decent personal shelf in the mini fridge though which was cool!
Location wise, though, I was not in a good spot to redeem most of the awards. It is possible to walk from Bellagio -> Aria/Crystals/Park MGM tram -> Park MGM -> outside across the street to NYNY -> upstairs to bridge to MGM Grand / Excalibur -> ExcalibuLuxoMandalay Bay tram, but it's a long walk and it takes about a half hour if speedwalking. There's normally a shortcut to get from the Bellagio standard tower rooms to the Aria tram, but the (I think) conference I mentioned blocked that path. Having to walk in a U to get to the tram about 8 times over the course of the trip was a little annoying. If you can get a Spa Tower room somehow, I'd do it for ease of redeeming the other stuff.
Descending in value, the Maverick Vegas Views trip ($139 value, redeemed for 900k LP) was really cool. The flight is short - only about 10 minutes - but if you haven't been in a helicopter before like I hadn't, the experience was great and the nighttime views of the strip were amazing. They take two photos of you before you get in, but keep in mind the cheapest option is $30-ish if you buy from them. They looked good though so I did buy.
The Tournament of Kings at Excalibur (for some reason no Norway seats were available for other dates - the cheapest seat as of now for any show date seems to be $81.10. Redeemed 80k LP) was about as fun as I remembered. You will be in the C row of Norway since that's the only block of seats myVEGAS reserves, so even if you don't really want to root for them you'll be there. I didn't realize they switched the actors out to play different countries / the warriors - the actor who played the Norwegian king the last time I saw ToK played France's king when I saw it this time. Fun stunts, food is pretty mid but as the only 100% free meal you can get on myVEGAS I can't complain. Trying to eat cornish hen with your hands is always a bit of a challenge and messy, though.
The Hershey's Complimentary Sweet Personalization ($16.99 value, 75k points)... hoo boy. I thought they weren't offering the award because they're stingy but it's actually because no one who works there knows how to do a paid Sweet Personalization, let alone a free one. Making the personalization was fine - there's a set of tablets by the elevators that let you pick a "Giant" (25 pieces) Milk Chocolate / Chocolate With Almonds / Cookies & Cream bar, pick a design, add a photo to the top (photos should look good horizontally so keep that in mind), and send it over to the printing queue. The rest of it was a mess.
Neither cashier, nor the supervisor on duty knew what the award was or how to redeem it. The supervisor stared at the reward confirmation email and relented, but said that management didn't tell them about it. Apparently no one working there knew that reward has existed since last summer. Eventually, they just zeroed out the cost and I got it for free, but I waited about 10 minutes while they figured it out. Then I waited an additional 20 minutes for someone to eventually came down and print the design. The "personalization" is just them printing on perforated cardstock that they wrap around the giant bar and lightly tape to cover, so you can separate that from the actual chocolate if you want the design to stay intact. Would I redeem again? Probably not. The fact that my rewards white whale was a $17 piece of cardstock plus a large Hershey's bar is just embarassing enough that I won't jump for joy if I find one to redeem for my next trip.
I redeemed a ticket for the Illuminarium's Space After Dark ($51.75 value, 75k points) but didn't feel like getting an Uber to go to Area15 so I didn't go. The Illuminarium is pretty mid, and this ticket is just a regular show plus one cocktail, so I feel like it wouldn't have been worth it.
The Mandalay Bay Shark Reef ($36 value, 30k LP) and Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art ($18 value, 8k LP) are fun if you're looking for something to do that's self paced, but keep in mind that even as slow as you may be looking at everything, they're not very big. Still though, nice to have a quietish place to reflect or vibe. Did get to touch a singray at the Shark Reef though which was fun!
This brings me to the food redemptions. My biggest takeaways from redeeming 7 different rewards are: (1) you will be taxed and tip-suggested pre-offer so budget accordingly, (2) only some restaurants have food cheap enough that a $20 off $40 will be able to feed two, and (3) you have to let the server know you are using your myVEGAS reward when you pay - even if you put it in the reservation notes or hand your rewards card, they might not check unless you explicitly tell them.
I had to actually have the manager manually refund me at Diablo's Cantina ($20 off, 7.2k LP) because they didn't know I was redeeming - it worked out, but they looked a little flustered and it was awkward having to wait while they figured it out. The food was decent, though you could probably not stretch $40 over two people because a lot of the entrees are $25+. It might be easier if you go smaller and get tacos instead.
Public House ($20 off, 10k LP) was... OK. I don't really get why people were hyping it up. The prices here are egregious - $25 for a hamburger that was mid and a boatload of decent fries. I was excited to get the cheesecake here when it was $10 back in November but it's $14 now. It was a pretty big slice and was good, but still. They were oddly swamped for dinner on Valentine's Day so service wasn't what it could have been.
Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill (BOGO entree, I got $22 value, 45k LP) was prob my fav spot of the trip. I went here for breakfast last trip and didn't hesitate to come back again. Love their french toast, and service was nice. The BOGO offer here makes the most sense for two people, since it needs you to buy two drinks anyway, and since it actually does fully deduct the cost of another meal. Those drink prices are steepish though - $7 for a small glass of orange juice was annoying. But, as one of the only spots myVEGAS offers a reward for that's open for breakfast, it's worth it to go.
Moneyline ($20 off 40, 38k LP) was more mid than I thought it would be. There's a $20.50 lunch special, so that's prob the best way to maximize the myVEGAS offer value, especially for two people. Includes a side (their one rotating soup option, or one of three salads) and a personal pizza. both personal pizzas looked off - not in a food safety way but in a presentation way. The way they do crust I think is too thick to actually have a normal amount of toppings on the personal pizzas, so it'll look like 25% crust versus a personal pizza from a chain like MOD. Service was nice though!
Posh Burger ($10 off $20, 38k LP) is the only quick service option on the list, so if you're looking for a quick breakfast/lunch/dinner, this is your bet. It's right off of the Aria tram stop once you enter the casino floor, so convenient too if you're coming from Bellagio/Cosmo/Vdara/Park MGM. There is actually a $10 breakfast sandwich option, so if you go then and get that you could feed two people with the $10 off. Otherwise, all the lunch/dinner burgers are $14+. They do coffee in the morning too but only hot if you're an iced appreciator like I am.
I also went to both the ARIA Patisserie ($6.50 value, 10k LP) and the Bellagio's Cafe Gelato for their gelato ($7.95 value, 6k LP). Cafe Gelato leans sweeter and more traditional in terms of flavor (they had mint chocolate, my fav) while the ARIA Patisserie has more trendy flavors (they had a pineapple carrot cheesecake which was strange but alright, plus a good tasting taro). Otherwise, they're very similar in being quick service places that just happen to have gelato. The offers work identically at both places too - it's BOGO on whatever quantity you get for your first gelato, ex. I got a scoop of chocolate mint in one cup at Cafe Gelato and got another scoop of tiramisu in another cup for free. Either of these would be a great desert option for two people.
If I had to rank where I ate, I'd prob go Wolfgang Puck <- Diablo's Cantina <- Posh Burger <- Moneyline Cafe Gelato <- ARIA Patisserie <- Tournament of Kings <- Public House.
As always, YMMV and offers may come and go and change price at anytime. Hopefully though, this helps some of y'all make decisions on what to redeem :)

2023.11.11 19:09 coffeeandbeaches I finally went solo to Europe for 5 weeks!

There are so many things I want to share ie hostels name, transportation etc, but I’m trying to keep everything short and simple.
I have always been traveling solo to Asia, and I finally ticked off my bucket list of Solo trip to Europe. There were times I feel cranky and lonely despite I stayed in hostels, but after some reflection, as much as I enjoyed my own company, I have figured that I will try to improve my social skills in the near future. My initial plans was to visit 7 countries, but I only did 6 for 5 weeks.
I’ll share the timeline below * Paris (2 days, stayed with a host from BeWelcome) - visited louvre museum, pantheon, eiffel tower by midnight. I was pretty much love these places. Throughout my stay, I was treated well by the local worker despite not speaking any French. I was just kinda shocked knowing the Happy Hours means slightly different (provably in most Europe). My bad for not asking them beforehand as I was assuming its a buy 1 free 1. If anyone (ladies) keen on visiting the carrette cafe just for their famous chocolate drinks, just DON’T. Unless you are going with friends. The taste is not to my likings, but its good for 3 times servings, just quite pricey. * Amsterdam (4 days, stayed in airbnb + hostel) - the weather was unpredictable! For a moment it was sunny, then raining + windy. I’m kinda glad I stayed here longer as turned out I was seriously gotten sick due to changes in weather. I was lucky enough to get a ticket for van gogh museum through ticket swap. I also visited rijksmuseum garden & the usual tourist spots. * Nice + Monaco (2 days, stayed in airbnb) - I am in love with the vibrant city Nice. I managed to visit most of the places I wanna visit in just few hours, which then lead me to spontaneously visit Monaco for the next few hours. But I only visited the casino and walk around for a short term time as my internet does not working there. I don’t want to risk being lost as I can’t even open up my map on the phone. * Rome (3 days, stayed in hostel) - my least favorite city. It gives me gothic vibes, vandalism everywhere and dirty streets. Visited trevi fountain, pantheon from outside , San’t Ignazio Church & Colosseum from outside. I had a tiramisu from Two Sizes (recommendation from TripAdvisor), and it was disappointing. The only thing that makes up everything is their coffee. * Florence (3 days, stayed in hostel) - my favorite city in Italy despite it was raining throughout my stay. If you have the chance to visit ZaZa restaurant just go! Their beef steaks are worth to try and only cost €18. It was definitely the best meals I ever had throughout my trip. The only downside, without any reservation, you have to wait for almost an hour to get a table. Another must try cafe is Vivoli Gelataria for their affogato. I personally love it. Most of the tourist attractions are pretty walkable and can be done in a day. * Milan (4 days, stayed with a host from BeWelcome) - the city was just alright. If you are coffee lover, its worth to visit Napoli Cafe and try out their La Crema (not in the menu, its basically sugar + espresso). I also slot in a day to visit Bellagio & Varenna. These cities are amazing, I had one of the best gelato & hot chocolate drinks here. * Munich (3 days, stayed in hostel) - I wish I stay here longer as I did not get to see much. One thing that made me shocked is the Germans loves to eat out, so most restaurants are likely to be full during dinner time till 1030pm. I visited the Nymphenburg Palace, and I was kinda disappointed. I came a bit late around 11, and there were lots of group tours. As the hallway is pretty small, you wont really get to enjoy yourself as it is packed with other people. I did try the Bavarian food & the beers. Must say its my favorite now. I was lucky enough to have local friend, so I managed to visit the surfing area, Michael Jackson’s memorial place as well as the English Garden. I will definitely visit Munich again. * Prague (10 days, stayed in hostel) - the plan was to stay for 3 days and visit Budapest & Vienna, but I have decided to stay longer as I received the news of my dad’ passing (whom I never met for almost 2 decades, the plan was to reach out to him after the trip, guess it was too late and I was quite devastated and in guilt). I was kinda lucky to meet a local here, and was kind enough allowing me to join them for recreational activities just to distract my mind. The bonus point for prague is their hot chocolate! I came almost everyday for it. The prague beer was just so-so for me. Will visit Prague again as I now have few friends in Prague.
Will I visit Europe again - definitely!

2023.11.04 04:58 FriendlyFarm4 No real MGM rewards if we didn't redeem a reward before the hack.

I called the myvegas rewards to redeem a hotel stay. I was told that they can't link myvegas to my MGM rewards account since the hack. This would be my first time using using rewards and I was planning lots to do with them. Does anyone know if they can use the rewards for non MGM stuff like the monorail or other properties stuff. I was hoping you free tournament of kings and a night stay to start. I'm so sad now, I'll be going at the end of the month.
Update:
Thanks to Myvegas rewards they fixed my issues. They had me create a new MGM rewards account since mine was 15 years old 0 points, I used the Gmail that I used for downloading the apps. Then they had me log out of a Myvegas app I chose my Konami and logged back in with the new info. Pick a reward, and I clicked the link on the email. It was great. I got to use my shark reef free for one day for my friend and I. Plus: we each reserved a free room mine was Sunday she did Thursday and reservations linked it. Just remember to go to the front desk the day of the switch so they update your keys, my friend got locked out and had to go back to the front desk.
I don't suggest Excalibur. I'll keep playing so we can each do the 2 night at Bellagio next time. If I need to go cheap I'm sure Luxor will be fine.
We went in December so we were able to go to one of the Mandalay Bay pools and Jacuzzi. We had a really fun time.
I did like being on the south side of the strip because we spent more time visiting our local friends and they were just a few minutes away. I think I'll be happy at Luxor in the future, plus they had my favorite Bally roulette automated machine, it was right after entering from the Excalibur inside ramp on the right side, and they have game king poker and blackjack there as well.
I was disappointed that the slots I loved 12 years ago are gone. I loved U-spin, cash spin, freegames by Bally machines. Now it's Quick Spin, same company it's just not as fun.
OMG I loved my room at the Four Queens. The staff was great, my smoke free room was great, huge mini fridge. Right there on Fremont, free valet. Plus you get a discount coupon book for restaurants. I liked the restaurant there for a hotel cafe.
Plus they have room service from 7am-1pm I think, it was really good and reasonable.
It was just really Smokey in the hallways and Casino but that's to be expected. I couldn't hear anyone in other rooms and the Fremont experience wasn't too loud. Plus the TV was fun when my friend was sick in the room.
Excalibur was not fun in the room, I asked about it upgrading to a suite and they said they didn't offer 2 queen suites just extra bedrooms and they said they really wouldn't be that much better. In case you were wondering we had a handicap accessible room on the 11th floor, first we were on the 15th and it was horrible, The room above us had emergency fire alarm work done in the morning and our toilet was broken and flooded the first night. I think maybe that's why it smelt so musty when I first entered the room. So we switched rooms. Plus the first night my friend woke up at 4am and barely could breathe. I thought I would have to cancel and drive back to CA. Thank gosh after the room switch she was better.
The staff really helped as best they could. I think it was room 15435 or something, I hope no one gets it ever.
Keep playing my Vegas everyone and enjoy your stays whenever you go.

2023.09.18 03:29 Adventurous_Art9803 Europe Roadtrip itinerary needs help tweaking and suggestions.

Hello, I'm seeking feedback on my proposed itinerary for a road trip in Europe. Time of year: Mid-May - Early June Total days: 24 days (2 days are my flying days)
2 days in Amsterdam: Canal, Red light district, museum. 2 days in Munich: Flying from Amsterdam. 4 days in Lucerne: Pick up our car and start driving toward Lucerne with a stop in Fussen (I want to see the castle but am not interested in going inside), visit Grindelwald, Brienz, Jungfrau, Interlaken. 2 days in Bellagio: Drive from Lucerne to Bellagio (Lake Como). 2 days in Venice: Check out the floating city 2 days in the Dolomites: Enjoy the view, maybe go on 1 hike. 1 day in Slovenia: Ljubljana/Bled lake 2 days in Salzburg: Mozart/enjoy the town I have another
5 days remaining, I don’t know if I should extend my time in the places I’m visiting above, or just head over to Croatia for a week.
Note: the car is picked up in Munich and will be dropped off in Salzburg. I'm aware of the additional cost to drop the car in another country, toll fees etc, but trains have longer travel time, we rather drive.
Approx driving time: ~ 22 hours Munich —> Lucerne = 5 hours Lucerne —> Bellagio = 3 hours Bellagio —> Venice = 4 hours Venice —> Dolomites = 3 hours Dolomites —> Slovenia = 3 hours Slovenia —> Salzburg = 3 hours
We are from Canada, and we have done road trips (40+ hours/3 weeks) in the Rockies, we really enjoy driving through the scenic route, stopping in little towns for lunch/cafe…
I don’t know how feasible the itinerary above is, I’m also thinking of skipping Amsterdam and do Budapest instead. Any suggestions?
