2024.05.16 10:30 DAREALPGF I'd really appreciate some help trying to find a reliable and affordable Hatchback for daily commutes, and city driving, preferably with Android Auto! :)

Hi!
I'm looking for a used car to share with a family member and I would highly appreciate any kind of suggestions or general help in trying to find options for a car fitting our needs! Thank you so much in advance! 💕
The budget isn't all that great, but i got pleasantly surprised when i found the Toyota Auris seemingly checking all the boxes and being available for even less than 15k€ used. After looking at it for a while i found out Toyota was a decade late in adding carplay so even the most modern Auris models don't support AA or Apple Carplay.
I was looking at Toyota cars specifically since they're so reliable buying a used car from them isn't all that risky, and because they're widely available around where i live (Finland).
I would, however, like the car to have AA if we're spending money on a recent-ish model, as otherwise we might as well just get another ~2012 trash heap to save money as from what i've seen Toyota's own entertainment & navigation systems seem pretty worthless. I mainly use Google Maps for navigation, and if the car doesn't have that as an option, i see no point in paying for a fancy touch screen navigation system that i'm never going to use. In that case, Bluetooth audio will be enough, and i'll just use my phone for navigation.
The requirements for the car are as follows:
  1. RELIABLE BRAND & MODEL
This is the most important part. If we're buying a used car, we need to be as sure as possible that it's not gonna break down on us for a long, long time, and that we won't need to pay twice the car's price in repairs.
  1. General Specs
We are looking for a compact 4-5 seater vehicle for daily- and city driving as well as moderately long drives with a trunk space that can be expanded onto the passenger seats when necessary. It should be compact enough for city driving and parking, but still be able to carry cargo when necessary.
All cars either of us have driven have been manual, but we're willing to give automatic transmission a shot as well! FWD or AWD preferred.
  1. Android auto or Bluetooth
As i explained earlier, I see no real point in paying for a touch screen monitor smacked on the console, if it adds nothing to the comfort or practicality of the vehicle. If the car isn't compatible with AA or google maps in some way, all that matters is that it's easy to listen to music wirelessly.
  1. Decent audio system
Speaking of listening to music, it would be really nice to be able to enjoy the music as well! Neither of us are audiophiles or anything, but it would be nice if the speakers were good enough to make listening to music while driving fun! :)
  1. Fuel
Gasoline or diesel works perfectly, It seems most options fit our needs nowadays are hybrids, which sound great otherwise, but neither of us have any experience with them. We've only heard horror stories about hybrids having reliability issues or being impossible to do routine maintenance to at home (like switching tires), and that they are more likely to fail inspection? I have no idea how true this is but if these are baseless claims, a Hybrid sounds like a great option as well.
Fuel efficiency is a huge plus, though "good" is enough. It doesn't have to be the main focus or anything exceptional. However, the more efficient the car is, the better of course!
  1. Price
No more than 20k EUR (Used), or ~250€/ month. Leasing is also an option but i couldn't find any valid prices around here. Besides, i'm mainly just looking for vehicle suggestions, i can look at deals or sales myself as long as it's roughly in the same price category.
The main reason we want to make sure the car is solid and reliable is so we don't have to pay ourselves sick for it's maintenance. If we're considering leasing, it will be so we can make the dealership pay for any possible wear & tear. Again, we're looking for a used car that will last us a while. ^^
Again, thank you so much for anyone willing to help and take a look at this, all help is highly appreciated! 💕

Basingstoke Comic Con releases statement on their disasterous event
Statement from Basingstoke Comic Con posted on their website / Facebook:
BASINGSTOKE COMIC CON STATEMENT, 16 MAY 2024 The Basingstoke Senior Team are heartbroken by the events of this weekend.
Having spent over 10 months putting the event together, we were hit by the perfect storm of problems that led to an event causing people to feel let down. It also left two members of staff physically attacked, some physically threatened, and almost all verbally abused. We truly apologise to everyone, whether a customer or staff member, who came away from the weekend unhappy.
So, what happened? The vast majority of the problems we have heard loud and clear and came down to the fact that we unexpectedly lost 30% of our staff. We don’t use volunteers; all our staff are paid. We expect natural fall out and losing 10% of our staff in the week running up to the event was manageable, however on the day another 25% just didn’t turn up. They didn’t email or call to advise us of this, they just simply didn’t turn up. I am not one for conspiracy theories, but it was so odd as anyone who runs events know losing 35% of staff unexpectedly is the perfect way to damage any event. On top of this, with what the staff faced on Saturday, a number couldn’t face returning on Sunday.
We ran Sunday on the barest minimum of staff that we thought was safe and I am so proud of them, as they faced overwhelming odds as we had to juggle and firefight throughout the day for the event, we had worked so hard for. Yes, there were members of staff who didn’t know things, but most likely they had been pulled from the areas they had been trained for, to deal with areas they didn’t. Because we had lost so many key team members such as runners, radio operators and actor handlers’ people had to move to other areas to interface with visitors.
Thank you to everyone who has messaged us with positive feedback about our staff. I know they all greatly appreciate it.
QUEUING COMMUNICATION Communication is key, and we hear you loud and clearly. We had a communication plan in place to manage queues and give people the chance to enjoy other areas of the event rather than spend time queuing. As you may have seen every ticket was numbered, except for the ones which were brought on the day and they were, for example, 1-50 Orange VIP or 51-251 for the Stargate VIP. Our intention was to call people in batches. We were planning to accomplish this by the Tannoy system, the stage, and staff carrying white boards with the latest information who would also be able to deal with queries and questions. They would cover all the areas which the speaker system didn’t including the marquee. With the lack of staff, we lost the ability to do this.
AUTOGRAPH QUEUING People who attended our event last year will remember we had a huge area for autographs. Some visitors commented they felt it was just too big. So based on the feedback we received we tried to make better use of the arena and clearly made the mistake of going the other way and unfortunately making it too small. This smaller area for groups of 50 plan, not the amount who ended up queuing. Added to that the barriers were laid out incorrectly and I am currently investigating to see how that occurred. It all amounted to a gridlock in the autograph area. With hindsight, we should have cleared the whole area, sent everyone away with times for each group to come back, but again because we were lacking the staff, we did not make this happen.
We know people queued for hours and were hot and squashed and we are so deeply sorry. It was absolutely not the plan and devastating for us. The very last thing we wished to see is people who have looked forward to an event, saved for it and travelled long distances not having an enjoyable time.
We are also aware the queue sizes led to far from ideal accessibility, something we take seriously. After the problems on Saturday, we created room by reducing the space of Artisan Alley, but this could not solve the problem by itself.
On Sunday, because we had so few staff, we were very limited in what else we could put in place. Staff members were having to fulfil a dual role of actor handler and queue management. And because of the events of the day before, people were fearful of getting their autos, which I completely understand, and it meant many people were not prepared to leave the queue and come back later which led to more crowding and people standing for long hours. Please do not feel like we are blaming anyone here, I understand why. Losing the ability to communicate with attendees and each other made things incredibly challenging as it meant we were unable to respond quickly to issues as they happened.
THE HEAT We watched the forecast, and we planned for warm weather and some rain. What we didn’t expect was for it to be 25c plus. I am aware that people were complaining that we didn’t provide water until later in the day and the simple explanation was, we didn’t have any. The hotel was unable to provide us with any, so we went out to buy bottled water and also tried to fill the gaps with jugs of water. We went out and brought fans and tried to think of every way we could to improve things for people with the event space we had available.
I would like to give my absolute assurance that we were not ignoring people’s issues and concerns and we felt so bad that there were times when we just couldn’t give people the answers which they wanted.
MORE I wish to address other points we have been receiving with the same openness and honesty. Not for sympathy or as an excuse, but I believe everyone deserves to know the truth.
We had to sack two members of staff, one was behaving improperly with guests and the other, well I don’t know where to start. This person stole items and lied about his presence at the event, getting photos and autos when he should have been working. The same person is now spending time in Reddit spreading lies and misinformation. We will be taking action against this person.
Regarding Richard Dean Anderson, we were advised in advance of the event that he was a slow signer and as such we limited the number of autos sold and calculated his signing time based on that. What we didn’t expect was for him to take 4/5 mins per auto. It would take him over 13 hours to sign 200 autos. Based on his actual signing time we should have only sold 45 autos a day which would have left many fans upset. We also did not force him to stay and asked:
Could he sign faster If he’d like us to cut the queue and. If he was happy to continue at current pace and we would find the staff and security willing to stay while he continued signing. Regarding Jason Momoa, we have read a number of comments left by people saying Jason said that we changed his attendance to one day and also that we messed up his flight so he couldn’t stay two days. This is completely untrue; we would have loved Jason to attend two days.
Also, if other actors made negative comments regarding the event, none of them came to me and wished that they had, so I would have been able to address it directly.
Some people commented that they saw the Police attend the event and speculated that it down to us, this is incorrect. The reason why they attended was because people were walking around Basingstoke Town Centre and swords. These weapons may have been fake, but members of the public didn’t know that, and they rang the Police worried and concerned. We spoke to the police and addressed this immediately via social media and Tannoy announcements.
People have also speculated about numbers and said that we oversold, this again is incorrect, as while some areas were overcrowded due to queues, others were completely empty.
When we put the Stargate VIP ticket on sale, it only had 7 actors on it and people were happy to purchase it at the advertised price. We should not have added so many guests as we now realise it created a logistical problem for people to get them all. We also should have dictated which day people went for autos rather than leaving it at the attendee’s choice.
REFUNDS If you have a ticket stub for an auto you were unable to get, please send a photo of that auto with your details and an order number to info@basingstokecomiccon.com to accelerate replies and make refunds as efficient as possible so we can get money back to you.
If your auto was part of the Stargate package, you will get a percentage refund based on the number of tickets included in the pass.
We will not refund those who missed flights, had visa issues, or were delayed getting to our event as per our terms. We have detailed records of which tickets belonged to whom and who did and didn’t attend.
All other refund requests will be considered on their merits, and we will be replying to those as quickly as we can in the coming days and weeks.
We aim to complete this process by the 30th of June and will not respond to chaser emails, or those trying to FastTrack any request via other channels as we want to be fair and diligent in our replies to everyone. We are aware that some people are encouraging people to get a chargeback, and while they are entirely entitled to do so, it does complicate things and may delay any refund request.
FINAL WORDS We are deeply sorry that people didn’t get the experience they deserved.
This was not the Comic Con we planned to run.
To all those who have sent messages of support via email and social channels, it means the world to me, and we’ll be back stronger and better next time.

2024.05.16 09:00 HealthInsuranceGuide What is the role of an agency in insurance?

An insurance agency plays a critical role in the insurance industry by acting as an intermediary between insurance companies and policyholders. Here’s an in-depth look at the functions and responsibilities of an insurance agency:
1. Representation and Sales
2. Consultation and Needs Assessment
3. Policy Customization and Quotes
4. Application and Underwriting Assistance
5. Policy Issuance and Documentation
6. Customer Service and Claims Support
7. Risk Management and Advice
8. Education and Awareness
9. Renewal and Review
10. Regulatory Compliance
Types of Insurance Agencies
  1. Independent Agencies: Represent multiple insurance companies and offer a wide range of policies. They provide clients with more choices and flexibility.
  2. Captive Agencies: Represent a single insurance company and sell only that company's products. They have in-depth knowledge of the insurer's offerings and policies.
  3. Brokerages: Similar to independent agencies but typically work on behalf of the client rather than the insurer, often specializing in more complex or high-value insurance needs.

2024.05.16 08:54 albert1165 Not all 27,649 VF3 "reservations" have been paid

In Vin's official word: VINFAST RECEIVED 27,649 DEPOSIT ORDERS FOR VF 3 CAR AFTER ONLY 66 HOURS OF OPENING - Vingroup (vingroup-net.translate.goog)
"Responding to the love and warm support of customers, Ms. Duong Thi Thu Trang - General Director of VinFast Vietnam market said: "The result of 27,649 car purchase applications after only 66 hours is proof of the Strong support and people's trust in Vietnamese auto brands."
Note the word: purchase application.
She did not use the word: reservation or order.
She carefully used the word "purchase application". That means not all have been paid. Lazy media will automatically replace "purchase applications" with "order" or "reservations" and hence does the dirty trick for Vuong Pham.
Many of these purchase applications, actually the vast majority of them, are online where people make a reservation but has some time, maybe 72 hours to wire the money or otherwise it will automatically be canceled. Think of buying an air ticket online. Same procedure.
Once you wire the money, it is non-refundable. But if you do not wire the money and hence cancel the "reservation", then there is no penalty.
Now, I wonder how many Vin employees are using this trick to pump the numbers?
Vinfast is sneakily to choose today to annouce that there is 27,649 "purchase applications". So they use a marketing trick to make the number appear larger than it should, and this is not a surprise, they have used marketing tricks many times in the past (2023 US sale figure is another example). Their statement is factually correct but there is nuance in it.
The actual money paid are likely to be less but how much less I don't know. May be only 50% paid. Maybe only 30% paid. Or 70% paid. Only Vinfast's accountants know this. But one thing I know for sure, it is not that 100% are paid.

2024.05.16 08:50 RunnyPilot Used Honda Fit 2016 Japan Import or New Toyota Yaris Hybrid 2020?

Hey guys, I hope you are all doing well, apologies in advance for the long post.
I've been recently looking into financing a car of my own, however, I'm in a bit of a complicated situation.
For context, I live in Malta, and due to the heavy amount of traffic every day, constantly using the clutch has been a literal pain for me and my legs, so I wish to switch to an automatic vehicle to not only find driving more convenient, but also to save my legs as much as possible.
I currently drive a Kia Rio with a 1.3l engine (I believe it's the 2022 model) but it is a rental from the company I work with. I intend to move on from said company, and also I do not wish to keep the car because as comfortable as it is, there's the lingering feeling that it's not mine, hence not knowing what year the car was manufactured, I guess the term is. And it wastes a ton of fuel, no matter how careful I drive.
So anyway, I found a second hand vehicle for sale, it's the Honda Fit 2016. It has pretty much all I need: Auto transmission, air conditioning, a 1.3l engine, electric foldable mirrors, easy access to the vehicle by keeping the key in your pocket, etc. It is also a Japanese Import.
The current range on it is 72,000km approximately. (About 45,000 miles for American fellows)
I went to see it and it is in really good shape. I will be test driving it this Saturday.
The used car is €10,500, but I can finance it for approx. 5 years for €180 a month, which is a pretty sweet deal. (Approx. $11,500, per month would be $192)
However, there is a new car that I am leaning my eyes on, and it is the Toyota Yaris Hybrid 2020.
It's got a lot of good features, and I also would get a very good deal. In Malta, our government is offering a grant of €10,000 to whomever purchases a hybrid or electric vehicle,
The asking price is at base, about €25,300. (Approx. $27,500)
Financing will require a minimum of 5% deposit, which then will be split to monthly payments.
There are also benefits that once the financing is finished, I can either keep the car, or get a completely new one with the same financing model.
While the new car does sound like a no-brainer, I want you guys' opinion, whether I should start with a second hand, or go straight for a new car with a ton of benefits, but expensive insurance, etc.
I hope I explained well. Please feel free to correct anything I may have said wrong.

2024.05.16 07:52 Miserable-Crab1073 Connecting salesforce to tableau

Hi I am an intern at a financial firm and want to connect sales force to tableau. My goal is to create visualizations based on the information we have in the system (looking at all restaurant accounts/brands we have in the system and I want to find out regional information, types of concepts, food categories, any other ideas here would be great). I need to configure the two first thought then start to get some dashboards in tableau that auto populate tables/visualizations. Is this possible? But ultimately find a way to use salesforce during my internship to add value. Any items tips? My first thought was doing something with tableau
Thanks so much in advance!

2024.05.16 05:29 MarsInGatorade I work 40+ hours a week to make 30k/year and it’s depressing

The company I work for is small, but highly profitable. We craft dancing attire for people who can afford $2,000-4,000 dresses and churn out around 10-15 per week, depending on the season. This doesn’t include the sales of our large back stock of dresses.
My job is very physical (I’m often sore and overworking muscle groups to the point of mild injury) and has no benefits. No dental, medical, and no PTO unless you count sick leave.
I understand that many jobs paying more than this might require a degree, which I do not have. The expense of a degree/taking on student loan debt hasn’t been feasible for me, so I’ve done my best to find steady work without that. This is the highest paying job I’ve had, ever, and I don’t know what to do to secure something better. My goal was to be a homemaker, but instead I’ve found myself here.
Money has always bothered me. It’s a fundamental part of society and I’ve accepted that as best as I can, but every day I wake up and it feels awful to participate in a ritual that feels like I’m throwing away my precious time for income that won’t even allow me to rent an apartment on my own. I’ve resorted to taking on a side hustle (sewing and decorating MORE dresses after work) to make ends meet after what NJ taxes take out of my paycheck.
Do you guys have any advice for how to better cope mentally with this reality? I’ll be 30 next year and would love to find reasons to be more optimistic while on my march to the inevitable 😅

2024.05.16 05:17 albert1165 It is official: Vinfast sold 27,649 VF3 after 66 hours

Source: VinFast nhận 27.649 đơn đặt cọc xe VF 3 sau 66 giờ mở bán (cafebiz-vn.translate.goog)
1/
So, the figures of 30K, 50K, 60K reservation spread online are exactly what I said: rumor to pump stock. And I am right again, see my prediction: Let’s crunch the numbers on VF3 :
2/
While 27.6K is a large number for Vinfast itself and in Vietnam, it is tiny compared to what Vinfast needed to meet the year end goal of 100K.
This 27.6K VF3 only net Vinfast a tiny $54M profit, tiny profit and not enough for a week of expense.
The money Vinfast got from the reservation so far is 27,649 x 15 M VND = 414B VND = $17.3M. Tiny !
So Vinfans and seeders are trying to tout the 27K figure as if it is a huge sucess, while in fact, the money magnitude is tiny.
3/
VF3 is only competitive in Vietnam, where Vinfast currently has no competition and where Vuong Pham can use the patriotism card. In other South East Asia countries, it is not competitive with the Chinese EVs on technology and price. So do not hope to repeat this figure in other SEA countries.
4/
"Besides the selling price, this time VinFast also changed the sales method by allowing transactions on e-commerce platforms such as Shopee, VinID as well as closing orders through 9 livestream sessions by 15 community influencers ( KOLs) coordinate implementation."
Vuong Pham is using all tricks and all channels to push sale but after 3 days, all people who want a VF3 have already reserved one, and that is. The reservation will drop sharply next week. Final number might climb to 30-33K and that figure is dismal given the lowest price.
The VF3 saga is coming to an end.

2024.05.16 05:06 MirkWorks Excerpt from The Culture of Narcissism by Christopher Lasch (Changing Modes of Making It: From Horatio Alger to the Happy Hooker)

III. Changing Modes of Making It: From Horatio Alger to the Happy Hooker

From “Self-Culture” to Self-Promotion through “Winning Images”
In the nineteenth century, the ideal of self-improvement degenerated into a cult of compulsive industry. P.T. Barnum, who made a fortune in a calling the very nature of which the Puritans would have condemned (“Every calling, whereby God will be Dishonored; every Calling whereby none but the Lusts of men are Nourished: …every such Calling is to be Rejected”), delivered many times a lecture frankly entitled “The Art of Money-Getting,” which epitomized the nineteenth-century conception of worldly success. Barnum quoted freely from Franklin but without Franklin’s concern for the attainment of wisdom or the promotion of useful knowledge. “Information” interested Barnum merely as a means of mastering the market. Thus he condemned the “false economy” of the farm wife who douses her candle at dusk rather than lighting another for reading, not realizing that the “information” gained through reading is worth far more than the price of the candles. “Always take a trustworthy newspaper,” Barnum advised young men on the make, “and thus keep thoroughly posted in regard to the transactions of the world. He who is without a newspaper is cut off from his species.”
Barnum valued the good opinion of others not as a sign of one’s usefulness but as a means of getting credit. “Uncompromising integrity of character is invaluable.” The nineteenth century attempted to express all values in monetary terms. Everything had its price. Charity was a moral duty because “the liberal man will command patronage, which the sordid, uncharitable miser will be avoided.” The sin of pride was not that it offended God but that it led to extravagant expenditures. “A spirit of pride and vanity, when permitted to have full sway, is the undying cankerworm which gnaws the very vitals of a man’s worldly possessions.”
The eighteenth century made a virtue of temperance but did not condemn moderate indulgence in the service of sociability. “Rational conversation,” on the contrary, appeared to Franklin and his contemporaries to represent an important value in its own right. The nineteenth century condemned sociability itself, on the grounds that it might interfere with business. “How many good opportunities have passed, never to return, while a man was sipping a ‘social glass’ with his friends!” Preachments on self-help now breathed the spirit of compulsive enterprise. Henry Ward Beecher defined “the beau ideal of happiness” as a state of mind in which “a man [is] so busy that he does not know whether he is or is not happy.” Russell Sage remarked that “work has been the chied, and you might say, the only source of pleasure in my life.”
Even at the height of the Gilded Age, however, the Protestant ethic did not completely lose its original meaning. In the success manuals, the McGuffey readers, the Peter Parley Books, and the hortatory writings of the great capitalists themselves, the Protestant virtues - industry, thrift, temperance - still appeared not merely as stepping-stones to success but as their own reward.
The spirit of self-improvement lived on, in debased form, in the cult of “self-culture” - proper care and training of mind and body, nurture of the mind through “great books,” development of “character.” The social contribution of individual accumulation still survived as an undercurrent in the celebration of success, and the social conditions of early industrial capitalism, in which the pursuit of wealth undeniably increased the supply of useful objects, gave some substance to the claim that “accumulated capital means progress.” In condemning speculation and extravagance, in upholding the importance of patient industry, in urging young men to start at the bottom and submit to “the discipline of daily life,” even the most unabashed exponents of self-enrichment clung to the notion that wealth derives its value from its contribution to the general good and to the happiness of future generations.
The nineteenth-century cult of success placed surprisingly little emphasis on competition. It measured achievement not against the achievements of others but against an abstract ideal of discipline and self-denial. At the turn of the century, however, preachments on success began to stress the will to win. The bureaucratization of the corporate career changed the conditions of self-advancement; ambitious young men now had to compete with their peers for the attention and approval of their superiors. The struggle to surpass the previous generation and to provide for the next gave way to a form of sibling rivalry, in which men of approximately equal abilities jostled against each other in competition for a limited number of places. Advancement now depended on “will-power, self-confidence, energy, and initiative” - the qualities celebrated in such exemplary writings as George Lorimer’s Letters from a Self-Made Merchant to His Son. ” By the end of the nineteenth century,” writes John Cawelti in his study of the success myth, “self-help books were dominated by the ethos of sales-manship and boosterism. Personal magnetism, a quality which supposedly enabled a man to influence and dominate others, became one of the major keys to success.” In 1907, both Lorimer’s Saturday Evening Post and Orison Swett Marden’s Success magazine inaugurated departments of instruction in the “art of conversation,” fashion, and “culture.” The management of interpersonal relations came to be seen as the essence of self-advancement. The captain of industry gave way to the confidence man, the master of impressions. Young men were told that they had to sell themselves in order to succeed.
At first, self-testing through competition remained almost in-distinguishable from moral self-discipline and self-culture, but the difference became unmistakable when Dale Carnegie and then Norman Vincent Peale restated and transformed the tradition of Mather, Franklin, Barnum, and Lorimer. As a formula for success, winning friends and influencing people had little in common with industry and thrift. The prophets of positive thinking disparaged “the old adage that hard work alone is the magic key that will unlock the door to our desires.” They praised the love of money, officially condemned even by the crudest of Gilded Age materialists, as a useful incentive. “You can never have riches in great quantities,” wrote Napoleon Hill in this Think and Grow Rich,” unless you can work yourself into a white heat of desire for money.” The pursuit of wealth lost the few shreds of moral meaning that still clung to it. Formerly the Protestant virtues appeared to have an independent value of their own. Even when they became purely instrumental, in the second half of the nineteenth century, success itself retained moral and social overtones, by virtue of its contribution to the sum of human comfort and progress. Now success appeared as an end in its own right, the victory over your competitors that alone retained the capacity to instill a sense of self-approval. The latest success manuals differ from earlier ones - even surpassing the cynicism of Dale Carnegie and Peale - in their frank acceptance of the need to exploit and intimidate others, in their lack of interest in the substance of success, and in the candor with which they insist that appearances - “winning images - count for more than performance, ascription for more than achievement. One author seems to imply that the self consists of little more than its “image” reflected in others’ eyes. “Although I’m not being original when I say it, I’m sure you’ll agree that the way you see yourself will reflect the image you portray to others.” Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.
<The American Religion by Harold Bloom (California Orphism)>
The Apotheosis of Individualism
The fear that haunted the social critics and theorists of the fifties - that rugged individualism had succumbed to conformity and “love-pressure sociability” - appears in retrospect to have been premature. In 1960, David Riesman complained that young people no longer had much social “presence,” their education having provided them not with “a polished personality but [with] an affable, casual, adaptable one, suitable to the losing organizations of an affluent society.” It is true that “a present-oriented hedonism,” as Riseman went on the argue, has replaced the work ethic “among the very classes which in the earlier stages of industrialization were oriented toward the future, toward distant goals and delayed gratification.” But this hedonism is a fraud; the pursuit of pleasure disguises a struggle for power. Americans have not really become more sociable and cooperative, as the theorists of other-direction and conformity would like us to believe; they have merely become more adept at exploiting the conventions of interpersonal relations for their own benefit. Activities ostensibly undertaken purely for enjoyment often have the real object of doing others in. It is symptomatic of the underlying tenor of American life that vulgar terms for sexual intercourse also convey the sense of getting the better of someone, working him over, taking him in, imposing your will through guile, deception, or superior force. Verbs associated with sexual pleasure have acquired more than the usual overtones of violence and psychic exploitation. In the violent world of the ghetto, the language of which now pervades American society as a whole, the violence associated with sexual intercourse is directed with special intensity by men against women, specifically against their mothers. The language of ritualized aggression and abuse reminds those who use it that exploitation is the general rule and some form of dependence the common fate, that “the individual,” in Lee Rainwater’s words, “is not strong enough or adult enough to achieve his goal in a legitimate way, but is rather like a child, dependent on others who tolerate his childish maneuvers”; accordingly males, even adult males, often depend on women for support and nurture. Many of them have to pimp for a living, ingratiating themselves with a woman in order to pry money from her; sexual relations thus become manipulative and predatory. Satisfaction depends on taking what you want instead of waiting for what is rightfully yours to receive. All this enters everyday speech in language that connects sex with aggression and sexual aggression with highly ambivalent feelings about mothers.
In some ways middle-class society has become a pale copy of the black ghetto, as the appropriation of its language would lead us to believe. We do not need to minimize the poverty of the ghetto or the suffering inflicted by whites on blacks in order to see that the increasingly dangerous and unpredictable conditions of middle-class life have given rise to similar strategies for survival. Indeed the attraction of black culture for disaffected whites suggests that black culture now speaks to a general condition, the most important feature of which is a widespread loss of confidence in the future. The poor have always had to live for the present, but now a desperate concern for personal survival, sometimes disguised as hedonism, engulfs the middle class as well. Today almost everyone lives in a dangerous world from which there is little escape. International terrorism and blackmail, bombings, and hijackings arbitrarily affect the rich and poor alike. Crime, violence, and gang wars make cities unsafe and threaten to spread to the suburbs. Racial violence on the streets and in the schools creates an atmosphere of chronic tension and threatens to erupt at any time into full-scale racial conflict. Unemployment spreads from the poor the white-collar class, while inflation eats away the savings of those who hoped to retire in comfort. Much of what is euphemistically known as the middle class, merely because it dresses up to go to work, is now reduced to proletarian conditions of existence. Many white-collar jobs require no more skill and pay even less than blue-collar jobs, conferring little status or security. The propaganda of death and destruction, emanating ceaselessly from the mass media, adds to the prevailing atmosphere of insecurity. Far-flung famines, earthquakes in remote regions, distant wars and uprisings attract the same attention as events closer to home. The impression of arbitrariness in the reporting of disaster reinforces the arbitrary quality of experience itself, and the absence of continuity in the coverage of events, as today’s crisis yields to a new and unrelated crisis tomorrow, adds to the sense of historical discontinuity - the sense of living in a world in which the past holds out no guidance to the present and the future has become completely unpredictable.
Older conceptions of success presupposed a world in rapid motion, in which fortunes were rapidly won and lost and new opportunities unfolded every day. Yet they also presupposed a certain stability, a future that bore some recognizable resemblance to the present and the past. The growth of bureaucracy, the cult of consumption with its immediate gratifications, but above all the severance of the sense of historical continuity have transformed the Protestant ethic while carrying the underlying principles of capitalist society to their logical conclusion . The pursuit of self-interest, formerly identified with the rational pursuit of gain and the accumulation of wealth, has become a search for pleasure and psychic survival. Social conditions now approximate the vision of republican society conceived by the Marquis de Sade at the very outset of the republican epoch. In many ways the most farsighted and certainly the most disturbing of the prophets of revolutionary individualism, Sade defended unlimited self-indulgence as the logical culmination of the revolution in property relations - the only way to attain revolutionary brotherhood in its purest form. By regressing in his writings to the most primitive level of fantasy, Sade uncannily glimpsed the whole subsequent development of personal life under capitalism, ending not in revolutionary brotherhood but in a society of siblings that has outlived and repudiated its revolutionary origins.
Sade imagined a sexual utopia in which everyone has the right to everyone else, where human beings, reduced to their sexual organs, become absolutely anonymous and interchangeable. His ideal society thus reaffirmed the capitalist principle that human beings are ultimately reducible to interchangeable objects. It also incorporated and carried to a surprising new conclusion Hobbes’s discovery that the destruction of paternalism and the subordination of all social relations to the market had stripped away the remaining restraints and the mitigating illusions from the war of all against all. In the resulting state of organized anarchy, as Sade was the first to realize, pleasure becomes life’s only business - pleasure, however, that is indistinguishable from rape, murder, unbridled aggression. In a society that has reduced reason to mere calculation, reason can impose no limits on the pursuit of pleasure - on the immediate gratification of every desire no matter how perverse, insane, criminal, or merely immoral. For the standards that would condemn crime or cruelty derive from religion, compassion, or the kind of reason that rejects purely instrumental applications; and none of these outmoded forms of thought or feeling has any logical place in a society based on commodity production. In his misogyny, Sade perceived that bourgeois enlightenment, carried to its logical conclusions, condemned even the sentimental cult of womanhood and the family, which the bourgeoisie itself had carried to unprecedented extremes.
At the same time, he saw that condemnation of “woman-worship” had to go hand in hand with a defense of woman’s sexual rights - their right to dispose of their own bodies, as feminists would put it today. If the exercise of that right in Sade’s utopia boils down to the duty to become an instrument of someone else’s pleasure, it was not so much because Sade hated women as because he hated humanity. He perceived, more clearly than the feminists, that all freedoms under capitalism come in the end to the same thing, the same universal obligation to enjoy and be enjoyed. In the same breath, and without violating his own logic, Sade demanded for women the right “fully to satisfy all their desires” and “all parts of their bodies” and categorically stated that “all women must submit to our pleasure.” Pure individualism thus issued in the most radical repudiation of individuality. “All men, all women resemble each other,” according to Sade; and to those of his countrymen who would become republicans he adds this ominous warning: “Do not think you can make good republicans so long as you isolated in their families the children who should belong to the republic alone.” The bourgeois defense of privacy culminates - not just in Sade’s thought but in the history to come, so accurately foreshadowed in the very excess, madness, infantilism of his ideas - in the most thoroughgoing attack on privacy; the glorification of the individual, in his annihilation.

April's big inflation reveal: The meme trade has been a fun diversion, but the serious business is here: the April Consumer Price Index reading is set for release at 8:30 a.m. ET. Prices rose 0.4% over the prior month, matching March's pace and bringing the annual inflation rate down to 3.4%. Stripping out food and energy costs, economists expect core inflation fell to 3.6% annually in April, which would be the slowest pace in about three years. ‌
Biden hits China with tariffs: The White House announced a suite of new tariffs on Chinese goods on Tuesday, with a key focus on EVs. In an interview with Yahoo Finance, President Biden painted cheap goods flooding the market — subsidized by the Chinese government — as an attempt to "put everybody else out of business and then they take over." Biden also said he expects China to retaliate but that the trade conflict would be manageable. ‌
GameStop and AMC continue to surge: GameStop followed Monday's 74% gain with a 62% surge Tuesday as the company continues to ride the recent meme stock rally. AMC also saw a second day of gains, finishing Tuesday 33% higher after gaining 80% Monday. Shrewdly, the company disclosed it raised $250 million issuing stock after Monday's pop. ‌
Google's new search: Google unveiled a new way of googling at its I/O conference that, yes, involves a lot of AI. The biggest overhaul to its search engine in years will integrate its AI engine to provide complex answers to queries — with citations. This time, we hope they're real. Users will also be able to perform compound searches for more targeted results without resorting to googling multiple times. For example, the ability to search for "a gym that offers discounts for new members — and how far it is from where I live." ‌
Powell plays down PPI: Fed Chair Jerome Powell provided a timely response to Tuesday's hotter-than-expected headline number for the Producer Price Index, speaking from a panel in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Powell downplayed the hot overall number, pointing at the mixed data and backward revisions. Still, the central bank head again stressed a need to be patient and "let restrictive policy do its work." Today's Takeaway is by Jared Blikre, Markets Reporter ‌ Meme stocks survived another volatility-fueled session Tuesday. ‌ Taking a page from the 2021 playbook, GameStop and AMC Entertainment led the charge. ‌ Both meme stalwarts notched gains over 74% Monday and had further doubled their share prices on the open Tuesday — only to sell off most of the day into the close. Nevertheless, after dozens of volatility halts GameStop closed the day up 62% while AMC jumped by 30%.‌ Amid some gentle coaxing by Keith Gill (aka Roaring Kitty), a slew of names familiar to Reddit boards followed — companies like Koss, Tupperware, Virgin Galactic, Hertz, and BlackBerry. ‌ But while the explosion in volatility rightfully invites comparisons to the well-known 2021 saga that played out on Reddit and across US stock exchanges, 2024 is already proving to be quite different. ‌ This year, Wall Street is driving the bus. ‌
Vanda Research crunched the numbers and reported in a note to clients that GameStop and AMC have only seen a fraction of the inflows experienced in early 2021. Flows into these names at the peak of the early 2021 frenzy were over four times Monday's volume. ‌ "Do we think more retail traders can jump in on the trend in the coming days? Yes. Do we think this is a repeat of 2021? No, and the chances we reach that stage are low," said Vanda. ‌ Without glancing at a single stock chart, it's easy to point out that 2021 was likely a historical aberration fueled by bored recipients of pandemic stimulus checks. ‌ Wall Street was caught flat-footed. Hedge funds like Melvin Capital were obliterated. ‌ But institutional investors learned from the 2021 episode and are better prepared now, argues Vanda. ‌ "Quant/hedge funds are much better equipped to handle these situations nowadays," Vanda senior vice president Marco Iachini noted. "If anything, we believe the chances that they participate along with retail in the squeeze but also lean against and then exit these trades ahead of retail traders are high." ‌
As of Monday's close, the portion of share turnover in GameStop attributable to retail investors averaged 7% over the prior five days — and that number was only slightly higher for AMC. In 2021, the averages and spikes were materially higher, indicating much greater participation by retail traders. ‌ Data in the options market confirms a similar story. ‌ But the biggest difference this year might just be the lack of one single, coherent narrative like the meme story that captured headlines in 2021. ‌ Only last week, we wrote about the recent resurgence of volatility in meme names. "In a critical break from prior trading epochs, much of the recent meme stock volatility is being fueled by material news and fundamentals, like earnings, as opposed to Reddit posts," we wrote. Why the 2024 meme stock action is much tamer than 2021 — so far Indeed, our (unofficial) Yahoo Finance meme stock heat map reveals impressive returns over the last two days that are mostly green across the board. But aside from GameStop and AMC, these daily returns are decidedly not triple digits as they were three years ago. ‌ In fact, the bigger names on this list — like Coinbase, Carvana, and Palantir — have been making their gains the old-fashioned way: around earnings and bitcoin fundamentals.
How much Wednesday's inflation print surprises economists — up or down — will be of particular importance during Wednesday's trading day. ‌ But analyzing market action from CPI release days back to May 2023's print, the equity research team at Goldman Sachs led by David Kostin found that "interest rate sensitive pockets of the equity market typically experience particularly large moves on CPI days regardless of the magnitude of the surprise." Chart of the day As seen in the chart above, non-profitable tech and the small-cap Russell 2000 index (^RUT) have moved significantly more depending on where the inflation print lands over the past year. ‌ — Josh Schafer, Markets Reporter

Camera is in rough shape cosmetically but seems to operate as intended. I picked this one up from a local photographer who was selling his gear and he mentioned he had it professionally CLA'd a few years ago. I have a copy of my own and all speeds seem to be accurate and I cannot find any indication that it won't perform properly when put to use. However, since I have not yet tested it with film I cannot guarantee that everything works perfectly; for such reason I am selling it as is and will not be accepting any returns.
Camera fires, all speeds work, advancing lever is smooth. Viewfinder is clear and bright, no dust; there seems to be a very faint spot of prism degradation on the lower left that is hard to capture in photos, but it is a miniscule spot. Light seals are brand new.
Leather throughout the body is a bit rough, with some corners peeling off a little bit; there's one corner on the front lower right side that has a piece missing and reveals one of the body screws, which I believe resulted from the last maintenance the camera received. It has some stains where the hot shoe mount used to sit on. There is a scratch on the black piece on top of the advancing lever from where they probably unscrewed it to do maintenance. The timer functions properly and as intended.
The light meter seems to be inaccurate, mostly indoors. It turns on and will react to changes in speed and aperture, but is a few stops underexposed when used indoors. It seems to be more accurate outdoors when there is more light to take in, as it is usually one stop or half a stop off from my external light meter. I would not rely on the internal light meter for shooting.
Olympus OM-SYSTEM H.ZUIKO AUTO-W 24mm f2.8.
The lens is fair condition, but I have not tested it either and cannot guarantee the image quality that will come from it. However, the imperfections in the glass aren't apparent unless you shine a very bright light directly to the elements. There is haze to be found mostly on the front element, slight haze on the rear element. There are a couple specks of dust that are noticeable on the back element. There are some scratches throughout the body of the lens. The rubber ring to control the focus is coming loose, but stays in place (used some glue to glue it at specific spots around the ring). Lens will only come with a front cap and will be attached to the camera during shipping.
Focusing is smooth. Aperture is smooth and clicky. Aperture blades are clean and free of oil. Apertures work properly and open and close when camera fires.
All in all I personally believe that if put to use the camera would perform properly, but there is no way to know until film is developed from it; so please be aware that the camera is untested and it's reliability or functionality are not being guaranteed whatsoever. Buy at your own risk.
Feel free to send me a message if there are any questions or concerns that I may assist with. Thanks for looking.
