I'm sure most of you know OpenAI just announced GPT-4o, a new model that can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time (See OpenAI's demo on YouTube)
By chance, I've been working with multimodal models far before GPT-4o's release, so I feel well-positioned to leave a guide here for anyone looking to build something with it!
Recently, I released an open source library so you can extract data in multiple modalities to feed your AI-based Python projects. In this post, I'll show you how to use it alongside GPT-4o with the OpenAI API to build multimodal apps with it. I've got nothing better to do right now, so I'll walk through the steps of extracting all multimodal content from different sources, preparing the input for GPT-4o, sending it to the model for processing, and getting our results back.
before getting into the code, let's just stop and ask ourselves why we'd use GPT-4o over previous models like GPT-4-turbo:

Step 1: Extract!
This can be done using The Pipe API which can handle various file types and URLs, extracting text and images in a format that GPT-4o can understand.For example, if we were analyzing a talk based on a scientific paper, we could combine the two sources to provide a comprehensive input to GPT-4o:

For some background my mother and I have never gotten along from her giving me up as a baby to now we’ve never seen eye to eye on most things. She has 3 kids my sister (18) me 17m) and my brother (11), All of us have different dads and she has made some terrible choices, my sisters dad was 24 when my mom was 16, my dad has some charges with children, and my brothers dad who is a drug dealer who has done many terrible things to be exact, he stalked there house, broke into a different house and threatened my brother with a gun. She has been different relationships however after getting married to her current husband (34m) she started drinking liquor heavily and becoming very angry and irrational the first conflict arose when he tried to drive away, she kicked out his windows, he then pushed her to the ground leaving her with large bruises and minor scrapes. The second incident occurred when my brother (11) was found eavesdropping on an argument they were having while she was drunk he got mad and punched her before driving 6 hours away and not speaking to her for days, when contact was made they decided my grandma (who raised me) was the issue I decided to move in with them because of my brother within the first 6 months of living with them they got into 3 fights and abusive confrontations. My mom’s friend who had come to live with us had originally planned on buying her own house but decided to support my mom until these problems began. My mom drove drunk multiple times, attempted to kill herself got ordered to go to therapy, didn’t go and quit her job safe to say I was ready to move and so was my brother, however my grandma having raised me allowed me to move back alone because she only has enough room for 1 other person my mom found out and flipped shit saying I was no longer her son and to not contact her again, to which I obliged and blocked her number around 2 weeks later she called my number and said if you want a phone then you have to unblock me or im not paying(my money was sent to cover the bill for my part of the phone she did not pay for it). I said if thats how she felt to cancel my my phone plan and make it cheaper on me to get a new plan so she did and that was the last I had heard until around 3 hours ago her and her husband got into another argument, which resulted in him breaking her nose and leaving giant marks before running out of the house she refused to call the police so my 11 year old brother had to report it secretly. Upon talking to her I relayed my thoughts and told her I don’t feel bad im no longer her son and therefore have no attachment whatsoever but was worried about my brother.  | With two weeks left of school, I decided to teach Battletech for a few interested third-graders. First, they chose the tonnage and walking speed, and had to do multiplication to determine the engine rating. I'd look up the engine rating and tell them the tonnage. They'd use division for the gyro mass and structure, then add all those numbers up. Subtract those number from the total tonnage, and that's what they have to play around with. The students don't know what they want, so I suggested tonnage for armour and worked out some armour bubbles for the head and rear torso. The remaining armour points are up to the student to divide among the other locations. In the photo below, you can see some simple diagrams they used to actually play during lunch today. For miniatures, we used two math cubes with the little stud pointing forward. They're simple, but have torso twist. I'm working on a larger scale map that can stick to the whiteboard, and use magnetic bases and some 3D printed representational 'mechs. That way the game is visible to all students across the classroom, and wont use any valuable table space. Playing the game required me to do all of the calculations for target numbers and such, but it proved the kids could hold interest and make some maneuver choices. So after gathering their papers, I hit the Make Pretty button in Adobe Illustrator. I want to leave this here and move on with my life.
I was sort of tortured when I was a child by my father. Honestly, I don't even know if it can be considered torture or if it was just abuse. Since I was 8, my standard punishment for any misdoing was standing on my knees for a long period of time. And he would randomly come and check if I am standing on my knees and not cheating by sitting down. If I did, he would yell or kick me. When I was 10, my mother left the family (for a good reason, I have to say), things got only worse from there. He would beat me with a belt, usually it would start with my butt, but he would hit anywhere really. One time, I couldn’t physically take it anymore, I tried to run away begging him not to hurt me. He chased me around the apartment, made me trip, and just kicked the f out of me. The thing about him is that tears would only fuel his rage. He would forbid me to cry because he couldn’t stand it. It would drive him mad, and he would continue beating me with his fists or stomping on me with an animalistic expression on his face.
When I didn’t want to eat the breakfast he made for me, he threw an empty water jar against the wall next to where I was standing. The jar completely shattered, and he ordered me to walk toward him through the kitchen. I was barefoot, and I asked if I could at least go get my socks. He just told me to walk toward him through the kitchen. I had to walk, stepping on shattered glass, to eat that breakfast. There was nothing in the world I feared more than my father. I was absolutely terrified of him.
When I was 11, one night I couldn’t sleep because of the upcoming parent-teacher meetings. I went to the kitchen and was seriously thinking about taking a knife stabbing him in the throat while he slept. I had received bad grades that quarter and feared what he would do to me. The only reason I didn’t go through with that idea is because I was afraid he would wake up from me stabbing him and he would kill me first. Looking back, I realize how fucked up it is that the reason I reconsidered was because I was scared of being caught in the act, not because of the act itself.
Parent-teacher meetings were the most miserable experiences in my life. They were announced ahead of time so I had a few days to imagine what would happen this time. When he went, I would place a crucifix of Jesus, get on my knees and pray, crying and waiting for him to come back. I didn’t even really believe in God or anything like that. I guess I just wanted to be saved. But I had no one I could turn to, so I did the only thing I could. I prayed for hours until he came back. Sometimes he would return angry and yelling as he entered the door. Sometimes he would come stoically, telling me to fetch the belt and wait for him in the living room while he goes to the bathroom. I don’t want to bother with telling what usually followed.
When my mother left, I also started to get bullied in school. They would do what bullies do, beat me, take my stuff, extort money, etc. So from 5th to 9th grade, I don't know how many times I have been beaten up. Over 1000 for sure and that's not an exaggeration. I was beaten up in school multiple times a day, go home to have a few hours of peace. And after that my father would come and beat me again. Then I go to sleep just to repeat the same thing the next day. I gave up. I never fought back and just accepted the beatings. I feel like that was the moment my soul died.
When the bullying started, I shared with him what was happening to me at school. He yelled at me and basically shamed me. After that, I never really sought help from anyone, as I thought being bullied is something to be ashamed of. I have to say the way he was raising me has greatly contributed to me being bullied in school. I was never allowed to make my own choices, to an absurd degree. During puberty, he would forbid me to shave that black baby hair on my upper lip. I was very afraid of disobeying him, so I had to go to school with that while people made fun of me. I never did any “stupid” teenage stuff. It’s almost like I had no rebellion phase and ended up never growing up. Usually, kids from families like mine are prime candidates for underaged drinking and trying drugs, but somehow, I missed even that. I really regret not being able to be a normal teenager.
I lived like that for 5 years, then switched schools and started living with my mother. But it was too late. Idk maybe it’s because no one ended up protecting me. Countless number of people saw me getting beaten and yelled at on the streets and public places by my father, not a single person helped. In school everyone just ignored the abuse. Even my mother didn’t protect me. I ended up hating everything. I hated people. I wanted to be left alone. I become very withdrawn and hateful. After that it was oblivion. Years spent completely isolated from society.
I am in my 20s now. It took me a couple of years to fix myself and my life. I don't hate people anymore. I have enough experience to see that not everyone is out to get me. For the most part, I would say I've gotten over most of it. I would be lying if I said I don’t want to have a father figure in my life, at least someone who would just nod in approval of what I do and give me a pat on the head. But I realize my main problem now is dwelling on the past. I need to move on. I ended up never telling anyone about what I went through. I just want to get this off my chest.

When I was 11, one night I couldn’t sleep because of the upcoming parent-teacher meetings. I went to the kitchen and was seriously thinking about taking a knife stabbing him in the throat while he slept. I had received bad grades that quarter and feared what he would do to me. The only reason I didn’t go through with that idea is because I was afraid he would wake up from me stabbing him and he would kill me first. Looking back, I realize how fucked up it is that the reason I reconsidered was because I was scared of being caught in the act, not because of the act itself.
Parent-teacher meetings were the most miserable experiences in my life. They were announced ahead of time so I had a few days to imagine what would happen this time. When he went, I would place a crucifix of Jesus, get on my knees and pray, crying and waiting for him to come back. I didn’t even really believe in God or anything like that. I guess I just wanted to be saved. But I had no one I could turn to, so I did the only thing I could. I prayed for hours until he came back. Sometimes he would return angry and yelling as he entered the door. Sometimes he would come stoically, telling me to fetch the belt and wait for him in the living room while he goes to the bathroom. I don’t want to bother with telling what usually followed.
When my mother left, I also started to get bullied in school. They would do what bullies do, beat me, take my stuff, extort money, etc. So from 5th to 9th grade, I don't know how many times I have been beaten up. Over 1000 for sure and that's not an exaggeration. I was beaten up in school multiple times a day, go home to have a few hours of peace. And after that my father would come and beat me again. Then I go to sleep just to repeat the same thing the next day. I gave up. I never fought back and just accepted the beatings. I feel like that was the moment my soul died.
When the bullying started, I shared with him what was happening to me at school. He yelled at me and basically shamed me. After that, I never really sought help from anyone, as I thought being bullied is something to be ashamed of. I have to say the way he was raising me has greatly contributed to me being bullied in school. I was never allowed to make my own choices, to an absurd degree. During puberty, he would forbid me to shave that black baby hair on my upper lip. I was very afraid of disobeying him, so I had to go to school with that while people made fun of me. I never did any “stupid” teenage stuff. It’s almost like I had no rebellion phase and ended up never growing up. Usually, kids from families like mine are prime candidates for underaged drinking and trying drugs, but somehow, I missed even that. I really regret not being able to be a normal teenager.
I lived like that for 5 years, then switched schools and started living with my mother. But it was too late. Idk maybe it’s because no one ended up protecting me. Countless number of people saw me getting beaten and yelled at on the streets and public places by my father, not a single person helped. In school everyone just ignored the abuse. Even my mother didn’t protect me. I ended up hating everything. I hated people. I wanted to be left alone. I become very withdrawn and hateful. After that it was oblivion. Years spent completely isolated from society.
I am in my 20s now. It took me a couple of years to fix myself and my life. I don't hate people anymore. I have enough experience to see that not everyone is out to get me. For the most part, I would say I've gotten over most of it. I would be lying if I said I don’t want to have a father figure in my life, at least someone who would just nod in approval of what I do and give me a pat on the head. ...And I would kind of love that, actually. Not because I want Ben to die in place of Doug/Carley (Although I suppose that sounds great to some people) But because that would mean there is a storyline/plot that spans multiple episodes that is locked behind which characters you save. In this case, the Kenny and Ben plotline.

I can't stand this anymore. I live with my parents they're supportive but they don't understand and are pushing me to do something with my life and I'm thankful but I just can't. There's just this road block. I always feel like I'm having to watch over my shoulder just to see and know there's nothing there.
Point is that I need advice or encouragement. What do I do from here since I've pretty much crippled myself. I have motivation to do many things I just can't get out of my head to do them. The pressure on myself and from others is beyond what I can stand.

For starters, I’ve had a number of problems currently including a bug infestation (??) seems they are crawling out from the bad construction work. I don’t leave food out and I regularly clean, more so recently to get rid of them but somehow they always find a way in. Since moving in, my fridge has also not been pushed into place. It has been sticking out and although I have asked multiple times over the course of nearly 6 months for it to be repaired and put into place, it remains sticking out. My accomodation is also aware of (had to physically kick him out and ban him from the building) my abusive, stalker ex boyf who has made many threats to my life. One of the security guards onsite has been advocating on my behalf for months.
In the tenancy agreement, it says the only way that I will be considered for a tenancy release is in exceptional circumstances; “You must have withdrawn from your university or college and provided proof in the form of a withdrawal letter, signed on headed paper from the institution. You must also have a suitable letter from the doctor or medical institution detailing the issue of why you have withdrawn from the university.”
I’m not sure what to do going forward. Is there any legal way to leave? Considering the bug infestation, ignored maintenance requests and constant risk of harm. I have done months of begging. I’ve also tried for months to find someone to take over my tenancy, but unfortunately there aren’t any students looking for accommodation right now.
Please let me know. I’ve been trying to figure something out for 4 months.

We are planning our wedding (40f me/ 28f her) and have had multiple fights about the wedding and because of the stress. I think we need to see someone but I want her to pick to make sure they are the right choice for us/her. I'm a bit scared to choose( if i choose and they are an asshat its my fault and wont help). I'm a level 4 apprentice who works for a very large aerospace engineering company in England, at the start of my apprenticeship we were told we'd be on a new apprenticeship framework, a highly specialised level 4 standard as opposed to the traditional NVQ with bolt on HNC qualification.
Over the three years of the apprenticeship (we started in January 2020) it became clear to us apprentices that the standard was not fit for purpose, we were sent to college to sit in on multiple HNC and an HND class, completing all assignments and exams but since we were not enrolled on them we do not get any qualification from these. We could quite clearly see against the criteria for our standard that what we were learning was wrong and would not prepare us for the end point assessment (EPA), these concerns were raised even during our first year to our managers and we were totally ignored.
We also raised concerns that a standard by itself is an almost worthless qualification holding no real value other than providing a framework for the apprenticeship, we were repeatedly told that this is not the case and that it would be equivalent to an HNC however we can find no evidence to back this up, nor did they provide any.
We were the first year to run the qualification, the year below us was the final, the year below them were put on a much more general standard with a HNC bolt on with HND top up which to me moots any point about a standard being remotely equivalent to an HNC.
We even went as far as begging them to let us pay for the HNC's ourselves but they would not let us do this, they changed the HNC course we were following multiple times which would not have made this possible however none of the courses we studied were actually relevant to the learning we needed to pass the standard.
At this point please bear in mind the stress this placed on us, for three years we raised our concerns, genuine, serious, concerns we had that would have severe ramifications on our apprenticeships and careers and at every point we were met with "don't worry about it" "trust us it's under control" and other dismissive messages, at times it felt like we were imagining it and to say it affected our mental health is an understatement.
Fast forward to our EPA and it becomes instantly apparent that we have not imagined it, the point of contention is the multiple choice test (MCT), as soon as we get the spec everyone realised that we have not been even remotely prepared, in total we had 5 mock tests all of which we failed. It's not like we had gaps in our knowledge but rather that we had been taught entirely the wrong subject matter, to try and fix this they gave us a series of virtual lectures crammed into a space of 3 months before going through the EPA to make up for the 3 years of irrelevant teaching. We all passed the observation and professional discussion portions of the assessment but out of 16 apprentices in our year only 3 have passed the MCT.
Our employers are trying to get the MCT thrown out through appeals and other avenues going as far as speaking to members of parliment but frankly it's too late to fix this, if they'd taken our concerns seriously in the first place maybe they could have fixed it but it's too late now, our contracts have already been extended by 6 months and there's less than 2 months left.
Even if they do manage to get us this qualification the standard is virtually worthless by itself and we will be at a disadvantage to every other apprentice that has ever been or will ever go through through the apprenticeship program given that contrary to what they promised a standard is not equivalent to a HNC.
We're just a group of engineering apprentices and we don't know what to do from here, we all have jobs and are working in the company since January, we have these jobs regardless but we didn't sign up to an apprenticeship just for the job, we signed up to get qualified and they have failed to provide this qualification, many of us would like to leave the company on account of how we have been treated however we cannot because we have no recognised qualification, we are in essence trapped in this company until we gain enough experience to leave several years down the road.
Many of our colleagues in the workforce have suggested we find legal counsel but with the post apprenticeship pay some of us can barely make ends meet, we have involved the union and they were very helpful in getting us into the EPA however they seem reluctant to help towards and kind of settlement or legal action. Please don't think of this as some money grab, this company has wasted three years of our lives and most of us would genuinely consider them the worst three years of our lives, we can't help but feel like we've been wronged and most people in the company outside the early careers team agree.
Recently our apprentice manager was let go and on last day he confessed that he had been lying to us, telling us that the standard is an equivalent qualification when he knew it was not and that he only told us this to keep us from giving up, in effect gas lighting us for three and a half years straight in to believing we would come out of this as qualified engineers.
I'm guess I'm asking if someone who knows what they're talking about agrees with us, there are 16 of us in my year based across the country and another 15 in the year below who will soon be in the same position. Would we have a leg to stand on in a lawsuit and what would the best way to go about this be?
