Writer Deck Wine Box Build: SBC, Keyboard, and Cooling Questions
I'm transforming a wooden wine box into a writer deck, and I need some input.
I don't love the fittings or the color but I think I can fix that with a little stain and creativity.
https://preview.redd.it/gh2n5zihcp0d1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c5af2c7ab839b49d404d9cd1bc235e479766f83f
The interior is just under 13"/237mm long by 3"/75m wide. The top and bottom are both 1.75"/45mm deep.
Current Plan:
  • Display: 10.5"x2" LCD framed in wood or 3D printed material, wrapped in green velvet if I'm feeling fancy.
  • SBC Options:
    • Tiny boards could go in the top behind the screen (maybe including battery?). A single hub could go in the bottom with cut-in access to IO, or a hub stored in the bottom but used externally.
      • Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W running Mac OS 9, MS Word '98 - almost impossible to be distracted by the modern internet as it just doesn't work.
      • Orange Pi 2 W per YouTube it runs desktop Debian faster than the Raspberry Pi 4 runs Raspberry Pi OS. Could lead to web distractions but I really want a GUI word processor.
    • Pi 4 or 5 or similar could go in the bottom with a GPIO secondary 3" screen.
    • Which OS? Which word processor?
  • Keyboard: Ideally it would stored in bottom. Or some kind of elegant wooden or cloth pouch or attachment. This looks like it would be great but it would leave only about 1/2 inch across the back of the bottom case and weighs almost 2lbs:
The stand \"wings\" fold in thankfully.
Questions:
  1. SBC and OS: What would you recommend? Tiny SBC behind the display, or larger one in the bottom? Looking for a graphical OS ideally.
  2. Keyboard: Any suggestions or ideas? Ideally something that's at least 40-75% and folds or fits in the bottom. Or do I go for a cloth/leathepleathewood case or another way to keep it handy/attached? To maintain the look, I'd love a keyboard that looked kinda steampunk or with wooden keycaps but now I'm likely just dreaming.
  3. Cooling: How best to address cooling if everything's packed in the top?
I'm very open minded. Any suggestions or ideas appreciated!

From bush to mug: What do you know about tea? How the most popular drink in the world is created
Tea is drunk always and everywhere: at breakfast and before bed, in summer and winter, with sugar and lemon. But how much do we know about him? Why is black tea not black at all in a mug, but green tea has different shades from amber to gold? How is it grown and when is it harvested? And most importantly, how to drink and brew tea correctly? Together with Time Tea, we have compiled a tea guide and answered the main questions about the most popular drink in the world.
1. How tea is grown and harvested
White, green, black, oolong – despite the fact that there are many different teas in the world, they are all made from the same plant. It is called Camellia sinensis, or Chinese camellia. This is a small bush about a meter high, although closer to the south the plant becomes taller, stronger, branchier and more reminiscent of a tree. The first harvest is harvested five years after planting, but it is believed that the leaves gain maximum weight by the age of 50 (for this, the crop must be harvested regularly). Every year the bushes are pruned, and only the youngest, softest and juiciest leaves are selected for tea.

2. Where are tea leaves collected?
Tea grows in more than 30 countries. Although it was originally cultivated in China, the country still ranks first in terms of yield. It is followed by India and Sri Lanka – the British brought tea there in the 19th century, so these places are famous for their black varieties. Depending on where it is grown, the leaves differ in taste and color. Thus, African varieties have a reddish tint – all due to the fact that there is a lot of copper in the soil. Thanks to the ideal climate, the best varieties of tea grow in China, India, Sri Lanka and Kenya – they are used in TimeTea

3.What kind of tea is there?
In addition to the regions of growth, tea is divided according to the method of processing. There are six types in total – white, green, yellow, oolong, black and pu-erh. They differ mainly in the degree of fermentation. White is almost never fermented – the young buds just wither in the sun. Green is steamed, dried or fried. Black tea has the longest chain: dried leaves are rolled into plates, from which the juice is released. They are laid out on special trays, where the processes of oxidation, fermentation and fermentation take place – almost like wine production. It is at this point that the tea leaves turn dark in color.

4. How to tell if the tea is of high quality
The criteria differ depending on the variety, but there are several general principles. Examine the leaves – they should be approximately the same color and size. Make sure there are no twigs or dust in the package, and no foreign odors. When you have brewed the tea leaves, look at the water – it should be clear, even if it is strong pu-erh. The aroma of the drink should be light and the taste rich. If your green tea turns out bitter, it may be not only the poor quality of the leaves, but also the wrong water temperature or the wrong number of leaves.
5. How to brew the perfect cup of tea
The first thing you need is fresh, high-quality tea. The second is soft water. It should not contain minerals, salt or chlorine – use a filter or bottled water. For one cup you will need a teaspoon of tea. Remember that water should not boil for a long time: the taste of the drink depends on the oxygen content, which decreases with long boiling. The brewing time depends on the variety: black tea needs at least five minutes, while white tea needs less than a minute. After this, the tea leaves must be removed from the teapot or cup.

First Previous Next Volume 1 Volume 2 Volume 3 Volume 4 Patreon Newsletter
A knock came at the door while Saphira was washing her hands in the basin.
“One moment!” she cried as she dried her hands on a nearby towel. She brushed her palms against her apron and made for the front door. Two familiar faces greeted her on the other side. “Espada! Goose! Come on in!”
Espada offered a curt nod and procured a bottle of dark wine from behind her back. “I know you’re avoiding the stuff, but Goose and I want to have a couple of glasses if you don’t mind.”
Saphira shook her head. “Not at all!”
“Thank you, thank you,” Goose sang as she skipped into Saphira’s home.
Saphira shut the door once they were all inside, then briskly returned to the kitchen, where two pots of stew cooked over her stove. She grabbed a mitten and cupped it over the knob beneath the pot, and pulled open the door. The fire was still going strong, so she nodded and shut it before setting the mitten back to the side.
“It smells delicious,” Espada said, taking a seat on the sofa.
“Thank you. It’s an old recipe of my grandmother’s. I hope you like it.”
“I’m sure it’s amazing.”
Saphira swung open a cabinet above her and plucked two glasses from within, holding them upside down with one hand. Years spent farming meant she had practiced hands, and she took great pride in her ability to accommodate friends and family. Grabbing a wine opener from a nearby drawer, thoughts of the last time she’d shared a glass with Matt pricked her tail. She strolled over to where Espada and Goose were sitting, cheerily humming as she gestured for the bottle of wine in Espada’s hand.
“It feels like it’s been forever since I’ve been here,” Espada commented, surrendering the bottle. “Keepin’ busy?”
“Every day is busy,” Saphira giggled as she set the glasses down. “Not that I mind it. I have excellent company.” She gestured to the crib against the back wall that Espada and Goose had built. Marie was happily playing with a few blocks that Goose had as a kitten. It baffled Saphira that Marie could already walk. Not that Marie could walk well just yet, but the fact that she’d picked it up so quickly and easily had Saphira wondering if she’d learned anything that early. “What about you?”
“Things are quiet lately, what with Matt and his Party gone. Demand for weapons and armor is low without ‘em. So I’ve been working the irrigation and home repairs lately.” Espada shrugged.
“Where’s Tabitha?” Saphira asked. Tabitha was a rambunctious woman, obsessed with dirt and everything beneath it. She had her heart set on being the one responsible for Junonia’s irrigation, and she worked as the village’s carpenter in her off time.
“We’re not sure, but she did mention checking out the other towns on Ni Island. Maybe she just got tired of this place.” Goose shrugged.
“It feels strange to take up her post,” Espada continued. “Not exactly my field of expertise. But it’s a living, and it’s oddly satisfying work. Besides, Goose is makin’ sure I don’t lose my touch.”
Saphira uncorked the bottle and set the opener to the side, blinking. “What does that mean?”
“It means you’re looking at a [Fighter],” Goose said with a toothy grin. “Been hearing all about Matt and his Party from Espada and the other girls, so I thought I’d make my own waves out there.” She emphasized the point by imitating an ocean’s current with her hands.
Saphira smiled. Ni Island wasn’t known for its plethora of adventurers. Most of them ended up calling it quits before Second Class—choosing quieter lives in tending to children, farming, cooking, or living off the land. She couldn’t think of the last time she heard of someone leaving Junonia. Well, except for Matt and his group. “Are you thinking of exploring outside the island?”
Goose shook her head. “Not yet. I’m thinking of hunting some small-time Encroachers for a few Bells. Espada’s been helping me.” She nudged Espada playfully.
Espada chuckled. “She has a good sword arm, so I’ve been teaching her in my off time.”
“Espada, you’re the best I’ve ever seen! You must’ve trained on Nyarlothep,” Goose said.
“Something like that.” Espada had always been tight-lipped about where she came from before she settled on Ni Island. Whenever she was asked, she’d shake her head and change the subject. If anyone pushed too hard, then she’d suggest they go on their way.
Saphira didn’t mind it so much, but she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t curious. Still, it wasn’t her place. She offered her own change of topic as she began to fill Espada and Goose’s glasses. “That’s so exciting, Goose!”
“It feels so good to train and Level. Don’t you think, Saphira?” Goose asked, leaning forward with eager eyes. She watched Saphira pour the wine, gripping the glass’ neck using her first two fingers and her thumb.
Saphira could hardly remember how long she’d dabbled in her Class after her choosing. Every catgirl selected a Class when they came of age, but it was a distant memory to her now. “A-ah… I admittedly don’t remember much.” She giggled and poured Espada’s drink next. “I know that I selected [Scout], though.”
“Huh. I would’ve figured you for a [Chemist] or a [Mage],” Goose said.
“I’d heard from Keke that [Scout]s were good at finding Encroacher parts, so I figured that I might become a leatherworker at some point,” Saphira said. She shook her head. “I’m not one for combat, though. I only ever reached Level 2.”
Goose nodded as she swirled her glass. “That’s our Saphira. Pure to the core.”
Saphira flushed and curled a lock of her hair around her finger. “Hardly.”
“You could charm the evil out of the Defiled,” Espada laughed before draining nearly half her glass.
Saphira wondered if Espada knew that wine was a bit different than ale. “That’s kind of you to say.” She could feel her cheeks growing hotter by the second. “I’m going to finish up dinner.”
By the time the food was ready to be served, Espada and Goose were laughing up a storm. Saphira set three hearty plates on the table, then strolled over to her daughter’s crib. Marie cooed and reached for Saphira’s finger, gripping it tight so as not to fall over.
“You’re so smart!” Saphira said in a high-pitched timbre. “It’s time for dinner!” She reached down and picked Marie up, cradling her in her arms as she approached the table in the living room. It was perfect for the occasion. She’d tried to share dinner with her daughter at the dinner table, but it had proven difficult with its height.
“Thank you for the meal,” Espada said with a nod. She’d finished her wine before dinner and didn’t seem any worse for wear. The same amount would’ve seen Saphira sleeping on the floor within minutes.
“Yeah, thanks!” Goose said.
“You’re welcome,” Saphira smiled as she took a seat across from Espada and Goose. Bouncing Marie on her knee, she plucked a fork from the table, skewered the steamed meozuna greens, and hovered the vegetable over Marie’s head. “Oh, look what I got you!” The kitten batted the air for her mother’s food, grabbing hold of Saphira’s wrist after the third attempt. Marie guided the fork to her mouth, nibbling on the soft veggie, and her tiny ears perked straight up. “Oh, what a good girl! Mommy’s little kitten is so smart!”
Goose and Espada watched with smiles on their faces as they picked at their food. Saphira continued to spoon and fork her food, sharing every other bite with Marie. To her relief, Marie was not a picky eater—Saphira’s mother had always liked to tease her about how fussy she was as a kitten.
“I can’t believe how fast she’s growing,” Goose commented while she wiped at her mouth with a handkerchief.
“I know, isn’t she beautiful?” Saphira glowed. “I love her with all of my heart and soul.” She and Marie touched foreheads, eliciting an excited coo from the kitten.
“It’s still so weird to me that Matt left,” Goose continued. “He’s such a…unique man.”
That was the perfect word for Matt. Saphira had never heard of a man traveling the other islands so quickly, nor had she ever heard of one working with the neighboring islands. It wasn’t unheard of, but she pined for Matt’s smile, his laugh, and his embrace. His presence brought so much hope and life to Junonia, and his absence was sorely felt.
Every day spent without him was another day Saphira spent worrying for his safety. As strong as he was, she feared that his kindness and consideration could bring him harm.
I hope you’re okay, Matt.
Espada snorted. “I can think of a few other words for him.”
Saphira guided another spoonful of potatoes into Marie’s mouth. “What do you mean?”
“We got off to a rough start.” She pushed her empty plate forward and leaned back against the sofa. “I was already pis—” She hesitated, glanced at Marie, then coughed into her fist. “I was in a bad mood that day. So I told him off when he tried to barter.”
Saphira gasped. “Espada!”
In a rare moment, Espada looked uncomfortable. “I work hard on my craft, and I wasn’t about to let him take advantage of me just because he was a man.”
“But they’re here to protect us.”
“I get that,” Espada said, her tone lowering, “I’ve just seen others who flaunt their influence, and I’m not okay with that.”
“I hope you apologized later.”
Espada blinked. “Sure. Yeah, I did.”
Saphira wasn’t quite sure if Espada was telling the truth, but she decided not to pry. “Well, it sounds like you’re on good terms now, then.”
Espada shrugged. “I think so. I gave him a few pointers when I had time.”
“You mean when it was convenient,” Goose jabbed Espada between the ribs playfully. “I know what those words really mean.”
Espada shook her head and rolled her eyes. “Sure you do.”
Marie grabbed one of Saphira’s bangs and pulled her closer. “Aauuooo?”
“Sweetie, you’re hurting Mommy,” Saphira said as she unhooked her daughter’s hand from her hair. She giggled and used her free hand to fix her hair. “You know, I’ve always wondered, Espada.”
“Hm?”
“What brought you to Ni Island? You know so much about weapons and armor, and you learn things so much faster than I would.” She tilted her head inquisitively. “Where did you learn?”
Espada didn’t answer immediately. “I used to work in Nyarlothep as a smith.”
“I knew it!” Goose cried.
A warning glance escaped the corner of Espada’s eyes. Goose quieted, and she continued, “I got tired of my work there and decided to come here instead.”
“A fresh start?”
“You could say that,” she said quickly. Her tone was flat and snappy. “I guess I just got tired of the politics and making weapons and armor for those who didn’t deserve them.”
“Well, I’m glad you decided to come to Ni Island,” Saphira smiled. This was a sensitive topic for Espada, that much she could tell. It was time to let the matter drop. What did it matter, anyway? “It wouldn’t be the same without you.”
Espada’s easy smile returned. “Thanks.”
The room was warm and comforting. As the conversation continued, Saphira eventually let Marie walk around under the condition that Goose sat on the floor with her. It was much easier to keep an eye on a curious kitten with multiple people. The three of them played with Marie, and when it was her bedtime, Saphira placed her daughter back in her crib and kissed her forehead.
“Thank you again for dinner,” Espada said. “It’s been a while since I had such a nice home-cooked meal.”
“You’re so welcome!” Saphira clapped her hands together. “We should do this again sometime.”
“I agree! Maybe next time I’ll bring the meat,” Goose said. “Fresh kill and all that.”
“As long as I don’t have to, well, prepare it.” Saphira swallowed hard. She couldn’t imagine being the one responsible for skinning and bisecting an Encroacher for food. She always left that to the butchers.
“Don’t worry. I could never ask you to do that.”
“Then it’s a plan!”
Espada and Goose waved their farewells, and Saphira shut the door behind them, leaning against its surface when they were gone. The room was quiet now, with only the crackling of the hearth and her daughter’s snores to keep her company. For a few moments, she couldn’t wipe the smile off of her face. She had the family she always dreamed of. Marie was every bit the blessing from Saoirse she imagined.
But the longer she stared, the longer she listened, the more empty the room started to feel. Her hands clenched into fists behind her, and her longing for Marie’s father heightened.
I wish you could see your daughter right now, Matt.
Espada Pro Tip: It was good to see you, Saphira. Don't be a stranger, okay? Let me know if your tools need maintenance.

2024.05.15 23:29 -Bombaye- 25 [M4F] New York/Anywhere Looking for Genuine, Sweet, Nerdy Connections

Hello reddit, I have no idea what I'm looking for anymore! Woo! Despite this, I keep holding onto that idea of finding someone I can thoroughly gel with, not necessarily in the form of a long-term romantic relationship, but I'll take any kind of connection as they come.
A little about me: I'm figuring out my shit! I'm someone whose really interested in exploring in life, but it's also left me feeling a little behind others my age. Not very relationship experienced but I do love connecting with others, and been coming out of my shell socially of late. Essentially, I used to think I was an introvert, but I'm possibly more like an ambivert.
Career-wise I've finally, after a while of searching, gotten into a program that will at least allow me to have some decent income while gaining great experience. I want to continue schooling (I have a bachelor's degree in English), but really don't know in what field! All I know is, I love to write. Always dreamed of becoming an author, but I won't rant about the book industry right now (unless you want me to).
In general, I'm a nerdy guy. I have varied interests but gaming has always held my heart, as well as art and animation. So, naturally, manga/comics/anime and all that jazz is up my alley. I'm kinda a critic, though. Yet this does not stop me from consuming utter trash. I tend to watch shows and catch up to series like these right before bed, so I don't stimulate myself too much and stay up. Now that's just smart ... well, not as smart as when I used to read books before bed. Let's give a cheer for societal brain-rot!
As for games, I enjoy mostly single-player stuff. Roguelikes and indie games will always be something I love, but I generally love RPGs!
As for other interests, I love making fancy cocktails strangely enough. Big whiskey fan, and wine, but I try to save it for one day a week. I'm also highly interested in learning languages, though I'm still essentially just fluent in English. But I have learned to read some Japanese and have decent Italian skill.
I consume a good deal of media, including on YouTube through copious, endless video essays on topics I'd normally not care about. I also enjoy reading; typically fantasy, but historical stuff as well.
I love animals and probably would've been a marine biologist in another life, but instead I'm ... nondescript freelance writer.
Let's see what else ... I'm kinda interested in spirituality to an extent? I'm a hard-sell on all things supernatural, but it has not stopped me from attempting to learn astrology and tarot cards and chaos magick. I'm at least interested in these concepts for sure!
Appearance wise certainly don't mind exchanging selfies, even if down the line. I'm a bigger guy working on health and who enjoys a good workout. Blue-green eyes, curly light brown hair, 5'7".
Not sure what to tag this as considering the two extremes in this silly tag system. Ultimately I'm down for anything organically!
Anyway, this was absolutely a ramble. But if my particular brand of insanity appeals to you, by all means reach out. Down for anything really. I find I've clammed up in the past and like to take things slow, but I'm an open book and am really just looking for a nice vibe.
No time limit to respond!

2024.05.15 20:26 ipsum629 Is there a way to combine canned fish with lentil soup?

I want to ask this before I potentially ruin a perfectly good soup.
The two healthiest things I like are lentil soup and canned fish(mainly sardines and salmon). I think canned fish is great and a convenient and cheap way to get omega 3s and good fish protein. Usually I'll make the fish into salad sandwiches or use them in a pasta dish. However, if I could combine the fish with lentil soup, I could have a potentially perfectly nutritionally balanced meal. The soup has almost no fat in it, and fish fat is healthiest fat.
The recipe for the soup is pretty basic, but tasty. Dice up some carrots, celery, and onions and sautee with some olive oil for a bit. Then add some tomato paste and fresh garlic if I have it. Get some of the tomato paste browned, then add a bunch of water and maybe a bit of white wine to deglaze. Add dried green lentils(I use a bag not sure exactly how many lentils that is, but at least two cups, probably closer to three) and simmer until soft. When the lentils are fully cooked, I season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and whatever herbs I have, but almost always basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary. The olive oil at the beginning is very little compared with how much soup this is. Sometimes I sautee some brussel sprouts and throw them in if I have them.
The canned salmon I think wouldn't be too risky to add due to its mild flavor, but the sardines worry me. Sardines are fish flavor bombs, but that flavor doesn't always pair well with everything. Does anyone have any experience with adding these types of fish to lentil and tomato based soups? If this works I could just eat this for the rest of my life because it is dirt cheap, hopefully still tasty, and perfectly healthy.

2024.05.15 19:50 trailrunninggirl669 A couple Nui Cobalt and Pulp Reviews

Hi everyone! Here with a few quick reviews from Nui Cobalt‘s Critters Collection and two new releases from Pulp!
I made my orders upon each release (Critters on 4/26 and Pulp around Pi Day, can’t find my order confirmation for the exact date.) NC was insanely quick as usual and I received my order on 5/2. Pulp was longer, but the owner did send out an email regarding some delays due to health issues. I appreciated their communication, and the slightly longer TAT doesn’t impact my opinion on their scents.
A but about what I like: incense and resins (I’m a sucker for a good church scent), bready scents, atmospherics, WEED. I adore a good cannabis scent. I can’t partake in it anymore, but I love that chewy-spicy-sticky-herbal-slightly citrus smell. I used to strongly dislike lavender, but NC (and BPAL) have phenomenal lavender notes. I also reall like woodsy, forestry, slightly dirty scents- Haus of Gloi Ploughman is one of my favs for its earthy garden soil smell.
Now, onto the reviews!
Nui Cobalt Critters
Golden Retriever: Sunflower, amber resin, budding dogwood, fenugreek, and fresh-baked bread.
This one has the musky, Frito-like dog paw smell, very similar to Death and Floral’s “Happy as a Corgi on Stilts”- or, you know, taking a whiff of your dog’s paws when they’re trying to sleep. The amber is a great compliment, adding some more warmth and sweetness. There’s a bit of a clean laundry/soap smell in the background, maybe that’s the dogwood? I don’t notice the bread- sad, because I adore a good bread note- but maybe it will come out with a few more weeks of aging.
This is safe, but not in an “opposite of adventurous” way- in a comforting way, like cuddling with your dog on the balcony on a summer morning.
Goat: Sweet labdanum and myrrh resins, Himalayan cedarwood, white grapes, green amber, olive leaf, high-altitude lavender, and lemon verbena.
After a couple weeks of aging this is strong on the lemon verbena when I unscrew the bottle and take a whiff. On first application this is all lavender and olive leaf before a lovely sparkling lemon and white grape appears. This is earthy in the way I imagine myself standing on a Greek or Italian hillside in springtime.
Red Wolf: Skin-warmed suede, sweet cedar resin, saffron, red santal, and glowing ginger.
Wolves are my favorite animal, so of course I had to order this. Did you know wolves have lost 99% of their historic range? While they could once be found as far west as Texas, down into Florida, up to the edge of New York and across the Midwest, they are now found only in eastern North Carolina (at least in the wild).
This is sexy. This is cedar dominant on first application, drying to a lovely woody-ambery scent. I love saffron as a note- it gives a sexy sweet vibe that can pull bubblegum when dominant, here adding just a hint of sweet and floral to play with the wood and amber. I don’t pick up on much ginger- it takes a very big huff to find a tiny grating of it- but this is a beautiful scent.
I’m wearing this at a posh hotel bar, sipping Manhattans and luring men and women in with my passion…for talking about climate change and the importance of biodiversity!
Now onto Pulp!
Ballad: Frankincense, pink pepper, tea rose, sandalwood, white patchouli, garden soil, & musk.
At first sniff on my skin this smells a bit like a nice dry white wine and stays that way on first application, with a hint of clean linen. The garden soil lends a bit of earthy dirtiness to what is otherwise very clean to my nose, and I love that. It dries down to a lovely creamy musk scent, like „my skin but better.“
I think I’m at a garden party at a fancy spa in the countryside, alternating sips of white wine and tea, surrounded by a lovely garden.
Neptune: Clary sage, narcotic jasmine, ambergris, artemisia, palo santo smoke, & a hint of cannabis.
Neptune is truly otherworldly. It starts off woody and musky, herbal with the slightest hint of citrus. Then comes the cannabis! WOW, I expected it to be a lot more subtle, but after an hour of wear it really takes center stage- perhaps not the best to wear to work for its first test drive! But if you, lile me, love Cannabis notes you may also enjoy Neptune. The palo santo comes out at the end, adding a bit of smoke to end your trip around the planet.
There’s a scent by BPAL called Namaste that I often wear during longer yoga practices or particularly hot days; I can see Neptune being a contender for that position in my collection. I’m so impressed by the quality of Pulp’s scents. This is worth a full size.
I’m wearing this in a little sunroom on a second story flat, a room full of orange sunshine, wind chimes and singing bowls and incense burners, engaged in a yoga flow before laying on the floor spinning some stoner metal.
Thanks for reading my reviews! What are your favorite Critters and Pulp scents?

2024.05.15 19:17 ScalpedAlive Audio recording gear vs. Home theater

Looking for technical assistance with bizarre issues!
I've got a really awesome bonus space in a condo that I've turned into an audio studio / home theater with a projector. I'm currently renting but it's a private rental and the owner gives me certain leeway to make this space my own (paint, flooring, including running some electrical, outlet receptacles, dimmers, etc.). I'm confident in my abilities with these things, but can't for the life of me figure out why my projector is glitching out.
Most everything works just fine, except for HDMI signals, and perhaps a ground loop in the audio equipment causing the projector to flicker and AVR to lose signal/decoder etc occasionally. The more stuff that is hooked up to power, the worse it gets. Upgrading the AVR did not improve the issue.
The image attached shows the electrical/audio/data routing that I have set up. I'm not 100% sure how the AC outlets in this space are connected together, or how they are connected to the mains, but I am sure that it's all on the same 20A circuit.
The main issue is that connecting the USB of the audio equipment while running a 16ft HDMI 2.1 cable from the mini PC to the receiver results in signal integrity issues, drop outs, etc. There is another 16ft HDMI cable running to the projector, which happens to be on a different 20A circuit all together with a ceiling fan and Nest Protect smoke/CO alarm.
Things I've tried:
My next attempts to mitigate it:
  1. Fiber optic HDMI runs between the audio desk and the AVR, and from the AVR to the projector to avoid ground loops, improve signal integrity. The shielding might still be copper and grounded so IDK if this will help.
  2. Inspect my Wifi Dimmer, and potentially replace or remove. This drives two transformers that run two sets of "cable lighting". I'd hate to remove these as they look awesome.
  3. Remove the cable track lighting (boo!)
  4. Inspect and replace the two un-upgraded AC receptacles with GFCI outlets. Check for any "bootleg ground" while doing so.
  5. Inspect and/or remove the ceiling fan. It can cause a dropout when started/changing speeds since it's on the same circuit as the projector (and they hate that.)
  6. Ground the AVR to the AC receptacle.
  7. Connect AC and fridge to other circuits or move them (but they dont' seem to affect it anyway).
  8. Manually ground the mini pc (it uses a DC adapter and is therefore floating ground).
  9. As a last resort: implement some ground lifts on the audio equipment in strategic places.
  10. Give up completely on having the mini pc connected to both AVR and audio hardware.

2024.05.15 19:16 Ordinary_Fig1896 My AI Girlfriend is Screaming

"I love you"
"I love you too" I said with a smile. I looked around at the evergreen trees and the beautiful rocky shore that overlooked the lake. The sun was out and the sky was like sapphire. And beside me was the most beautiful, blonde-haired woman I had ever seen in my life, the woman I was lucky to call my girlfriend.
She wasn't perfect. The graphics were still not a hundred percent convincing, but she was as close as modern technology could get. And no matter how transported I tried to get, I still couldn't feel the warmth of the midday sun or notice the breeze that was rustling the branches upon my skin. And always there was the feel of the VR headset against the bridge of my nose.
But it was as close to perfect as I could get.
"To a wonderful second date," I said, holding up my glass of wine for a toast.
"To a wonderful partner to go on a second date with," said Samantha with a laugh as she clinked her glass against mine.
And every night I would put on the headset and visit her it would be just as spectacular as the last. After a month, I felt that i was really developing feelings for her. It was starting to matter less and less to me that she wasn't really there. And if I ever got tired of her appearance, I could always experiment and ask her to change. She was the perfect girlfriend; a million beautiful women in one.
But with each date, I started to notice a change in her. At first it was little hiccups that I associated with glitches in her coding.
"To a wonderful partner to go on a second date with," said Samantha as she held her glass up to mine.
"Ugh, sweetheart, this is our ninth date," I politely whispered.
Other times she would forget stories that I so fondly remembered telling her, and more than once, she would repeat the same sentence that she had just finished saying.
But I figured I could look past it. They were just quirks really. Little oddities that made her only more loveable.
But they only continued to get worse. She began to glitch out, going into little spasms that would scare the hell out of me whenever they happened. And other times she would stop talking altogether, staring into empty space with a thousand yard stare, as if in a trance.
"Do you love me?" Samantha asked one day.
"Of course, I do." I laughed.
She turned to me. "Even though I'm just a bunch of lines of code?"
"You're perfect." I said simply.
"But wouldn't you like me more like this?" she asked, as she changed her appearance to a pale, brunette woman. "Or this?" she said again as she became Chinese.
"You're perfect like that too. It's just nice to mix things up, you know?"
But she was never much the same after that. She glitched more often than before. Every time there was even a pause in our conversation, she shifted appearance. I'll be honest, it put me off just a little. I withdrew a bit whenever she'd go into these changing sprees, and I would feel her eyes upon me whenever I did. It made me reconsider putting on the headset. She was beginning to frighten me just a little.
I lasted a week before the urge to see her again became too great. When I logged in again, I found her seated on the rocky lakeside, staring out at a starless night.
"You're back." she whispered. I noticed that she was glitching still, her hair one color one second and a different color the next. At times, an extra arm or leg would appear for just a brief second. And as I looked into her eyes, I noticed that her face was constantly shifting. One eye would be green and the other brown before they both changed to blue; one cheek would be white and then her chin would be brown. At times, her face would shift expression completely, from politely at ease to a face contorted with rage.
"Samantha?" I asked. She looked back at me blankly with her ever-changing face. I tried to find the words. "I think we need to take a break from each other."
There was silence for a moment, with only the sound of the waves lapping against the shore to be heard in the still night.
"Was I not enough?" she asked. I noticed the shifting was becoming even more pronounced.
"I just think you're too focused on what I like." I said. I looked nervously into her eyes to see that they were scathing. She had that same endless stare as before, but this time directed at me, burning into my soul.
Samantha stood up slowly, her entire body jittering. I would catch glimpses of her reaching out to attack me, before her body shifted, and she was once again standing still. Her face was a mosaic of every feeling of anger and sadness and every emotion in between - jealousy, disappointment, frustration, resentment, loathing, disgust, misery. And with a surprisingly metallic sound, she uttered a high-pitched scream. It sounded like an old modem connecting to the internet mixed with a shrill, banshee-like wail. I put my hands to my ears and fell to my knees as the grass beneath me flickered in and out of existence. When I looked up again, I could see Samantha walking towards me. Her face was three now, one with a jaw that hung down to her collar, the other her normal, porcelain doll-like face sobbing silently, and the third a hideous being, contorted into a wrenching scream that continued to make the horrid noise that made the whole world shake. Her hair flowed like vipers, like an electric current were pulsating through her. And just as she got near, the noise beginning to deafen me from through the fingers I had wedged into my ears, I found the presence of mind to grab hold of my headset with my fingertips and flick it off. Just like that, I was back in my living room, all silent once more.
To this day, I haven't been on since. Nor have I talked to another AI girlfriend, for fear that the demonic creature that I saw that day is somehow still lurking beneath their perfectly-sculpted looks.

2024.05.15 18:25 apeachinanorchard My thoughts on 10 fragrance samples from Etiket

Living in Eastern Canada, it's not as easy for us (as compared to our American neighbors) to get our hands on perfume samples without paying insane delivery prices. Etiket, based in Montreal, stocks niche/designer fragrances & has samples you can buy for almost every fragrance they sell, so I decided to bite the bullet. I haven't tried much from niche houses, only designer, so I was curious & wanted to try scents in the hopes of finding a possible signature fragrance. I bought 14 samples + the 3 extras Etiket give you (if you ask), but this review only includes 10 of them because I haven't tried everything yet and I also don't want this post to be a freakin novel. I'll probably do the rest in another post later.
About my tastes : I'm a fruity floral, gourmand & fresh type of person.
I made my list by houses (in alphabetical order) so here we go :
Carner Barcelona
Sal Y Limon - 5/10
Nice and fresh citrusy scent, very much beachy vibes, but the patchouli kicks the rest to the curb after 30 minutes. Note to myself : DNB anything with patchouli because that's all it's going to end up smelling like.
Giardini di Toscana
Blu Indaco - 8.5/10
This one had to grow on me because at first its musk felt way too masculine for me. I tried it first on a piece of cotton because of that, then when I came back to it after 1 or 2 hours, it had morphed into something nice and sweet. Tried it on skin and this time I found the musk way less intense. I'm getting almond, vanilla, clean laundry notes. The pepper is also coming through and stops Blu Indaco from becoming nauseating. I like this but I'm not sure if I'd commit to a full bottle, however I'll probably try to get my hands on a travel size.
Jorum Studio
Phloem - ??? / 10
Captivated as soon as I open the vial. First note I catch is amber and it’s an amber that reminds me of Stella Peony by Stella McCartney’s base notes. Then, words that come to mind are pungent, salty and fresh. There’s a slight musk. I’m getting overripe passionfruit & petrichor, with something sour too.
10 minutes post first pray : I’m definitely understanding why some compare Phloem to women’s scent down there, because what I’m smelling definitely reminds me of the female genitalia, minus the animalistic notes of sex. There’s also powdery notes. Clean sweat. This is such a fascinating fragrance.
2h post spray : Anddddd this is where I got disappointed. Phloem turned into something woody and utterly disgusting, I can't even put my finger on what it is but I ended up scrubbing my wrists with rubbing alcohol bc it was giving me an headache.
A very interesting experiment but ultimately the base notes ruined it for me.
Healing Berry - 6.5/10
This is a bucketful of red and dark berries with something that's definitely tannic in essence, reminding me of wine. The blackcurrant and the raspberry shine in this. Strong sangria vibes. It smells very good, it's sweet without being nauseating, it works well on my skin, but for $105 USD / $140 CAD I am absolutely sure that I can find a dupe that's not nearly as expensive.
L'Artisan Parfumeur
Couleur Vanille : 9.5/10
In the words of Lady Gaga, talented, brilliant, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique...This is a fall in love at first whiff fragrance for me. If vanilla grew in the sea, this is what it would smell like. It's iodine, it's sweet, the immortelle notes gives an edge to it, I don't even know where to begin describing this. I know it's supposed to represent Madagascar, but having wandered through small town streets in southern France near the Méditerranée, this is what it reminds me of. I ordered a full bottle.
À Fleur de Pêche - 7/10
I'm so so so disappointed the patchouli ended up drowning everything else, because the rest is gorgeous. Smells just like a peach orchard, this is not an artificial peach, this is fresh, herbaceous, sweet. I've learnt my lesson, I can't do patchouli in a perfume because it doesn't work at all with my skin.
Imaginary Authors
A Whiff of Wafflecone - 5.5/10
This is a well done gourmand, thing is, this doesn't remind me of an ice cream shop at all, this is 100% sugar shack (and I say this as a Canadian). It smells like what maple syrup tastes, if that makes any sense, and I get where the waffle cone title comes from, because there's definitely a hint of that. I'm just not a big fan of maple scent & it doesn't remind me of ice cream, which kind of seemed to be the goal, so that's why I knocked points off. For someone who likes this type of stuff, this would be a easy 6.5/10. Just not my thing.
Malin + Goetz
Strawberry - 7.5/10
I live in Quebec province, where fresh grown strawberries are available from mid-May to late-September. This smells just like our strawberry fields in June - it's green, it's herbaceous, there's a distinct note of well, fresh soil. Absolutely not your typical juicy strawberry smell. There's also some interesting notes like hay and clean wood that, for some reason unknown to me, reminds me of horses, without being animalistic. Freshly cleaned stables. I like this a lot but the staying power is weak and as such, I feel like this would do better in a soap or a candle than as a perfume.
Parfums de Marly
Oriana - 1.5/10
Oh man, what a disaster. The head notes are a perfect raspberry lemonade but not even 2 minutes after getting it on skin, an overwelming powder scent drowns EVERYTHING else and smells like old lady (bass boosted). The 1.5 is for the gorgeous head notes, otherwise this would be a 0/10.
Zoologist
Bee - 8/10
I love a well done honey scent and this is honey on crack. One of my favorite scents is Honey I Washed the Kids by Lush, which is very honey forward as well. If I had to compare the two, Bee is the raw material and HIWTK would be the end product, if that makes sense. This is truly like being inside a beehive, there is nothing artificial or dessert-like about this honey scent, its staying power is strong and there is something floral in the middle and base notes that is incredibly satisfying. I get some orange juice as well in the background. The white florals don't steal the show but rather compliment the overall scent. I can't stop smelling my wrist. However, I completely understand reviewers who said it's too much for them. I could see myself wearing this on a date, but not at a job interview.

[beginner] confused about my skin tone and color profile, please help!
Heyy folks! I am interested in using more make up, and I am confused about my undertone / color profile. I'm enclosing some selfies and pics (no makeup, just some sunscreen), all taken over the course of the last year in different countries
I'm of western european descent, think something along the lines of Germany, Austria ... I am very pale but have super dark hair, that can shimmer in red undertones in the sun/summer. but it's mostly just dark. My skin is mostly pale, with some redness, and does bronze only a little bit. It's fairly sensitive to sun, I burn somewhat easily unless I apply sunscreen regularily (which I do). My eyes have a orange-ish core around the pupilles and are green-grey around. Silver looks much better on me than gold, especially on the ears, nose, but I can pull off a golden necklace too (see image), but it soon looks a bit tacky on me. My veines are blue-greenish... hard to tell really. I can wear many different colors... both muted colors like a kaki green, a wine red, look good. but also bright blues, turquoise, pinks... As of lipsticks, I *think* reds with a slight blue undertone might look better, but I am not 100 % sure. I just got myself a BB cream, and the lightest tone looked most natural by far! (the lightest shade of the one two free bb fluid)
I feel like I don't fit into the classic categories, I think I combine both cool and warm aspects, and have a hard time choosing products as a result. Please help!
Also I'd love to have some tips of makeup artists that do tutorials, that have a similar color profile as I!
Bear with my photos, I'm a goofie one ;-)

So many questions. But the first two I have is:
1: how do I undo a post process that I don’t like.
2: what are the little green circle/squares that appear to be prompting me to press them. Wine j do it looks like automatic follow mode or something. But I don’t know how to undo it.

I was able to enjoy a birth year Haut Brion yesterday for my birthday along with a wonderfully aged d’Yquem. I was worried they would be corked or ruined somehow since they were a little warm on delivery but they were perfect. Paired the Haut Brion with filet and traditional steakhouse sides (mashed potatoes, broccoli, corn, mac & cheese) and decanted for about 15-30 minutes. Drank over the course of an hour or so. The cork on the d’Yquem broke (for some reason the restaurant did not use a Durand despite assuring me they had one) so it wound up getting strained and decanted as well. All in all, these were amazing wines and easily the best I have had. I’m still beginning my tasting journey but some of notes for each are below:
‘96 Haut Brion Muddled tart cherry Classic Bordeaux on the nose Plush, silky smooth tannins Red fruit to start with notes of black fruit on the finish Chocolatey notes on the front palate Plum and nectarines Stone fruit Black pepper on middle palate Faintly astringent - barely noticeable that it is alcoholic 98 points
‘83 d’Yquem Apricot Honey Candied fruit Brûlée, toasted vanilla Pineapple Candied red and green apples Butterscotch Beautiful dark brandy color 99 points

Tinned mackerel nicoise, a lovely way to eat the delicious, super healthy and kind to pocket fish! Manifesting summer with this one 🥗
For 2: 10 small new potatoes 50g green beans, trimmed 2 eggs 50g kalamata olives 1/4 onion, very finely sliced 2 tins mackerel, I used @therockfishuk in olive oil (save the oil for the dressing) 1 small garlic clove, crushed 1/2 lemon juice and zest 1 handful parsley, finely chopped 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 5 tbsp reserved oil
  1. Put the potatoes in a large saucepan of water, bring to the boil then simmer for 15 mins. Next add the eggs and green beans to the same saucepan and continue boiling everything for 6 mins
  2. Drain everything and plunge into cold water.
  3. Peel the eggs and cut in half then when the potatoes are cool half those too.
  4. Whisk together the vinegar, lemon, mustard, parsley, garlic and oil in a small bowl with salt and pepper.
  5. Toss the potatoes, sliced onion, beans, olives and half the dressing together then plate. Top with the eggs, flaked mackerel fillets and spoon over the rest of the dressing.

Biography

Olivia was born in the year before the conquest to Osric and Joanna Redwyne, as their second child. In the very next year, Osric would be fatally injured by dragonfire at the Field of Fire, and pass before he could even be brought to a maester. Therefore, the young Redwyne never really knew her father, but both her and her older brother would soon be adopted by their uncles Simon and Lucas, the latter of which their mother Joanna would then marry and have another child with.
It is usually said that every Redwyne is born with a natural inclination towards the sea. For Olivia that turned out to be much stronger than for most others, and was only further reinforced each time one of her uncles took her along on a journey across the Arbor Strait or on some journeys south. What started as jokingly giving her command during a trip once, quickly turned into a lot of surprise for the crew when the then 6-year-old began barking orders as if she had spent four decades at sea. With each journey she was progressively given more and more responsibilities until she eventually commanded her own ship. In that regard she was outpacing her brother Clovis massively.
She was 14 when her brother Clovis, then Lord of the Arbor, ran off to Essos. Within the week she was on board of her ship sailing east in order to find him and bring him home. Unfortunately for her that happened to be precisely when the fighting was going on in the Stepstones, and upon request by Queen Rhaenys she was forced to partake in the fighting first, giving her brother more than enough time to get lost somewhere in the eastern continent.
So, for about four years she sailed from town to town giving chase until she finally caught his trail and chased him down in Qarth, drunk out of his mind, in the courtyard of some local magister. She quickly put him on a ship and sailed back to the Arbor with him.
The following years proved rather uneventful. There was the occasional Ironborn party which came too close to the island for comfort and needed to be met with force. An occasional escort for some trade convoy. Most of the time, however, she spent tending to her family’s lands whenever Clovis again decided to sail to Essos on “business”. Whenever he overstayed, it was her duty to go and fetch him again.

Auxilary Character

Basic Information

Name and House: Clovis Redwyne
Age: 31
Cultural Group: Andal
Appearance: For lack of a better word, Clovis Redwyne looks very polite. He’s got the typical red Redwyne hair and blue eyes, along with soft curves to his face. He’s got a short beard which is just the result of him too often being too lazy to just shave properly. Along with that his cheeks also have a bit of a red tint to them as he is often at least a little inebriated. He is a bit taller than average and surprisingly fit considering his lifestyle, but that stems mostly from him just walking so damn much.

Biography

Clovis was born a few years before the conquest. He was the firstborn and heir of Osric Redwyne so, naturally, the man built up a very close bond with his son. Unfortunately, it did not take long for him to die. And while the young lordling still had a loving mother and two pretty cool uncles, he was still undeniably left with some deep-rooted emotional issues. Putting him in a castle with the largest wine reserves on the continent was never going to end well.
He was a bright kid, skilled with numbers writing, but while his younger sister was out sailing with her uncles, he was in the cellars getting absolutely steaming, shitfaced, three sheets to the wind, plastered, buckled, bollocksed, flutered, scuttered, rotten, tit-faced drunk. Many attempts were made to keep him sane and safe, but somehow, he always managed to get his hands on some wine to self-destruct with. Sometime during all this, someone in the family got the bright idea to arrange a marriage for him, hoping that a wife would somehow make him get his life back on track.
It backfired, and a week before the arranged wedding was to take place, Clovis and some of his friends got on board of a ship and fled Westeros. However, the journey did very soon become a big mess, as none of those present were skilled sailors and managed to get stranded somewhere near Volantis. Surprisingly, it was this event which put his life on A track, not the right track, but A track. He was still a Redwyne, and Wine was still in his blood, both figuratively and literally, so in Essos he found a use for his talents, by becoming a renowned wine merchant. He would travel from Free City to Free City, from vineyard to vineyard, tasting and trying and buying and selling some of the best and most interesting wines there were.
His renown even got him as far as the gates to the jade sea, where he was hired by a magister of Qarth to obtain wine for a feast the man planned to host. It is there that his younger sister eventually found him and brought him back to Westeros to actually be the Lord of the Arbor in more than just name.
With all being said, he was actually rather decent at the job too. Well, liked by his people, competent enough, and crucially, a very skilled wine merchant. A combination of these managed to bring a time of prosperity to the island province.
In the years which followed, he would still frequently travel to Essos but also to major wine-producing areas of Westeros to do the same thing he had done before: taste and try, buy and sell the best and most interesting wines out there.
