Does anyone remember if it was the FBI or DHS that made a pamphlet about how An-Caps are dangerous to society? I requested a copy but they never got back to me.

2024.05.16 17:54 Complete_Village1405 FOIA copy denial case law?

I have an active FOIA request going to a part of my local government (Minnesota) but they told me I cannot photograph or otherwise copy it when I go to inspect, due to program copyright protection. I know only part of the request is on that program and so not all of my request can be covered by copyright concerns (internal emails and orders and such), but they are telling me I cannot photograph ANY of the request. Is there any legal precedents or case law that prohibits them from hiding the non-copyright parts in this way? Thanks.

Approved! Very happy and thankful.
This subreddit has been a big help for us so I wanted to return the favor and perhaps shed some light with our experience on the application process. Below we have listed some things that helped us and some answer to questions some of you might have.
What Helped Us:
  • Video that helped us file i-130 online
  • Similar Video that helped us file i-485
  • Video that helped us file i-765
  • Video that helped us organize our application packet
  • Lawfully case tracking app helped us keep track of our application
  • We also used this website to track our i-485 application as compared to other applications and their respect case group number.
FAQ:
Did we use a lawyer?
  • No, we filed everything ourselves.
Why did we submit the i-130 online?
  • We decided to submit the i-130 online because of the ease of being able to submit our proof of our marriage. We were able to upload all photos in a Word document and provided a short description for each. With 79 pages in the word document itself, being able to submit it online helped out a lot.
What evidence did we submit initially for proof of our bona fide marriage?
  • Copy of our marriage contract.
  • Copy of Rent Lease Agreement (Containing both our names)
  • Email thread of me inquiring to job about adding partner to health insurance.
  • Many photos of us throughout the years, with a short description of each photo
  • Photo copies of letters sent between the two of us.
  • Photo copies of past and current messages between the two of us (WhatsApp).
  • Photo copies of past and current call logs .
  • Quick description or letter about how we met and how life is currently married.
  • Photos around our house (showing co-living).
  • Photos of our small marriage ceremony.
  • Photos of us with each other's families.
  • Future Plans (Regarding life, personal, and travel).
  • Food Delivery App receipts
  • Photos showing joint subscriptions (YouTube, Netflix, ext.)
  • 5 different Affidavit of Support letters.
How did we pay for application?
  • We paid for the i-130 online and the i-485 by money order from USPS. We had so submit 2 separate money orders for the i-485 since the max limit on each money order slip is $1000.
What was my partner's previous status before applying?
  • Visa Waiver Program (ESTA). I would also like to mention that at time we submitted our application, my partner was in the country for 105 days, over the 90 day limit that is allowed.
Did we submit the past 3 tax transcripts?
  • I submitted only 2 tax transcripts, 2020 and 2022, and a letter of non-filing for 2021 with an explanation as to why I was no required to file taxes that year. It is also worth noting, 2022 was the only year that I had enough income to sponsor my partner without requiring an additional sponsor. At the time of the application, I was worried that perhaps they might look at my past years and decide that I don’t make enough (don’t know why I worried about this).
Did we submit our medical with our initial package?
  • Yes we submitted the medical documents with the package in the beginning.
What was the RFE that was requested?
  • We missed a single question on the i-485 application in section 8 (checkbox). As soon as we received the RFE, we went ahead and resubmitted the same application, with only updating that single question. We submitted the RFE (re-completed i-485) online after we signed the application and scanned page with the signature into the pdf since USCIS wants the signatures on black pen ink. For a bit after we submitted the RFE we were worried if we should have submitted in mail, however it seemed what we submitted was fine. I would also like to mention that we did not update the i-485 with any new information, like SSN. This was based on the word of mouth of this community.
What was our receipt block number:
  • I485: IOE-09-228
  • I130: IOE-90-879
Was our interview waived?
  • Yes is was waived.
Where was your application approved?
  • Our applications were at NBC for the longest until recently. In the beginning of April, we reached out to Emma to inquire about the status of our application, in which was then told that our cases were transferred to the Detroit FO. Only a few weeks later, here we are now!
Overall, we are very pleased with the outcome! If anyone has any more questions or comments, please feel free to ask and I will try my best to answer them.

2024.05.16 17:23 MolokoBespoko The unsuccessful search for Moors Murders victim, Keith Bennett, on Saddleworth Moor between September and October 2022

This story has been gaining some small online traction over the past couple of days, and Russell Edwards has been namedropped again by Keith Bennett’s brother, Alan Bennett, on social media. I want people to be in no doubt about what Edwards did back in 2022, and I want to make sure that the following ranks near the top of Google searches too so that people can easily find information that discredits this complete and utter charlatan.
Header photo description and credits: Greater Manchester Police employing a drone in the excavation of the site searched for the remains of Keith Bennett on Saddleworth Moor, 2nd October 2022. Manchester Evening News

Who is Russell Edwards?

Edwards is a self-proclaimed “amateur detective”, who has for many years invested a lot of his own time and money in trying to get to the bottom of numerous infamous unsolved cases. He has claimed to have identified Jack the Ripper as a Polish barber named Aaron Kosminski, and wrote a book about his “findings” called “Naming Jack the Ripper” - which have since been called into question along with the credibility of both Edwards and the forensic scientist he collaborated with in regards to both Jack the Ripper and the Moors Murders, Jari Louhelainen.
Edwards also runs a Jack the Ripper guided walking tour in London. I won’t link to it because a) I don’t want to drive up clicks to it and b) the website contains a lot of misinformation as well as graphic autopsy images of Ripper victims without warning. I initially thought he had stopped doing these, but the most recent review listed on there was from January of this year.
He claimed to have started looking into Keith Bennett’s disappearance in 2015, but had been interested in the case since around the time the remains of another Moors Murders victim, Pauline Reade, were discovered in 1987.

The known facts of Keith Bennett’s disappearance and murder

Keith was walking to his grandmother’s house on the evening of 16th June 1964 when he was abducted by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. According to their accounts, he was driven up to Saddleworth Moor and endured sexual assault before he was strangled to death and buried in a shallow grave. There is a detailed and extensive write-up on Brady’s and Hindley’s conflicting accounts linked here. Tragically, to this day Keith Bennett remains the only one of the couple’s victims whose remains were never recovered.
I would strongly encourage everybody to read these FAQs around the search for Keith too. I wrote these up a while ago, and Alan himself has been kind enough to contribute to them as well after the fact.

The 2022 “findings”

First off, here’s where exactly Edwards made his “discovery” in relation to where the other bodies were found. I should state that this area consists of plenty of gullies and peat soil. If you click on the 2022 Search on Saddleworth Moor flair, you‘ll see everything we discussed in this subreddit as the search was being carried out. But I will recap what happened anyway.
In a statement published on 30th September 2022, GMP Force Review Officer Martin Bottomley said:
“At around 11.25am on Thursday 29th September 2022, Greater Manchester Police was contacted by the representative of an author who has been researching the murder of Keith Bennett, a victim of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. Following direct contact with the author, we were informed that he had discovered what he believes are potential human remains in a remote location on the Moors and he agreed to meet with officers yesterday afternoon to elaborate on his find and direct us to a site of interest.
“The site was assessed late last night and, this morning, specialist officers have begun initial exploration activity. We are in the very early stages of assessing the information which has been brought to our attention but have made the decision to act on it in line with a normal response to a report of this kind.”
It was first reported in the Daily Mail that a “skull” had been found, although the same article then went on to say that “detectives are preparing to exhume a particular area where suspected skeletal remains have been found including what experts believe to be a child’s upper jaw with a full set of teeth”. It was also reported that a small piece of blue and white striped material, and potential samples of body tissue (although this was later discredited as a probable mixture of vegetation and muddy water), had been found.
Edwards had claimed he and his team had conducted extensive soil analysis of the area, which they had discovered 4 weeks before. There were high levels of calcium, which can indicate the presence of human remains (but the team did not mention that it also indicates the presence of limestone or another high calcium natural material). Describing the dig, he said “the smell hit me about 2ft down. Like a sewer, like ammonia. I worked as a gravedigger when I was 19. It hits you, that smell of death. It is distinctive.”
Alan Bennett later stated that the smell was probably methane - of which there are pockets containing it across the moor. Edwards also falsely stated that everything was left in situ - more on that in the paragraph after the next one.
On Saturday 1st October, Greater Manchester Police issued a statement saying that “no identifiable human remains have been found” - despite what several tabloid and local newspapers had been reporting. It was confirmed that drones were being used in the search on the 2nd October, and a statement issued by GMP later that day confirmed that excavation of the site will continue for the foreseeable future.
Edwards and members of his team started posting on Facebook and declaring that Keith Bennett had already been found. On 2nd October, Jari Louhelainen, a Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biology at Liverpool John Moores University and a member of Edwards’ team, posted a photo of himself analysing what he suspected was a “bunch of hair” from the dig site. He later confirmed in the comments of his post (after being called out for posting it in the first place) that it was a “look-a-like plant material”.
On 4th October, Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Hughes, of GMP’s Force Review Unit, said: “Forensic Archaeologists and Forensic Anthropologists have now completed a methodical archaeological excavation and examination of the area previously dug and refilled by the member of the public. No bones, fabric or items of interest were recovered from the soil.
“These accredited and certified forensic experts are now continuing with a methodical and controlled excavation of the area immediately surrounding the original site to provide a higher level of assurance of the presence or absence of any items of interest. Further soil samples have been taken for analysis, but at this time there is no visible evidence to suggest the presence of human remains. The scene examination is ongoing.
“A report of possible human remains is always treated with seriousness. As such, we have deployed police search advisors who can support our scenes of crimes officers – this will result in more visible and high profile tactics, such as officers walking in lines to identify any potential sites of focus.
“GMP is committed to providing Keith’s family with answers following this report, both from the physical excavation and subsequent analysis of samples. This will take some time but we will keep the family updated at every stage and request that their privacy is respected.
“We have seen the outpouring of support since this news broke so know how our communities feel about this case but we are asking members of the public not to travel to the area and can assure them that we will provide timely and appropriate updates.”
At 2pm on 7th October 2022, Greater Manchester Police announced that they had closed the scene on Saddleworth Moor after finding no evidence to indicate the presence of human remains. “At this time, there is no evidence of the presence of human remains.”
Assistant Chief Constable Sarah Jackson, portfolio holder for crime, said: “We have always said that we would respond, in a timely and appropriate manner, to any credible information which may lead us towards finding Keith. Our actions in the last week or so are a highly visible example of what that response looks like, with the force utilising the knowledge and skills of accredited experts, specialist officers and staff. It is these accredited experts and specialists who have brought us to a position from where we can say that, despite a thorough search of the scene and ongoing analysis of samples taken both by ourselves and a third party, there is currently no evidence of the presence of human remains at, or surrounding, the identified site on Saddleworth Moor. However, I want to make it clear that our investigation to find answers for Keith’s family is not over.
“We understand how our communities in Greater Manchester feel about this case, the renewed interest in it and the shared desire to find Keith. Much of Saddleworth Moor is private land so we would ask that members of the public, in the first instance, report any perceived intelligence to their local police service. The discovery of suspected human remains must be reported immediately to enable the use of specialist resources to investigate appropriately.”
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Hughes said: “The investigation into Keith’s disappearance and murder has remained open since 1964 and it will not be closed until we have found the answers his family have deserved for so many years. We are thankful for their continued support of our ongoing enquiries. This has been a distressing time for them and we ask that their privacy is respected.
“We understand the confusion which may have been caused to Keith’s family and communities across Greater Manchester by reports to the contrary. We hope that by giving this detailed update today, we provide reassurance that GMP are committed to finding accurate answers for Keith’s family.
“In response to the report made on Thursday 29 September 2022, officers met with the member of the public who later provided us with samples and copies of the photographs he had taken. He also took officers to the location from which he had obtained these and provided grid references.
“In the days since, independent accredited forensic archaeologists and certified forensic anthropologists, together with GMP’s Crime Scene Investigators, have completed a methodical forensic archaeological excavation and examination of the identified area and beyond. An accredited forensic geologist also took a number of soil samples – analysis of which is ongoing.
“The items given to us by the member of the public have been examined by a forensic scientist and though this hasn’t yet indicated the presence of human remains – more analysis is required. With regards to the photograph, we have sought the assistance of a forensic botanist. We are now utilising the knowledge and skills of a forensic image expert to put a standard anthropological measurement to the object to assist with identification. At this stage, the indications are that it would be considerably smaller than a juvenile jaw and it cannot be ruled out that it is plant-based.
“The excavation and examination at the site is complete and, to reiterate, we have found no evidence that this is the burial location of Keith Bennett.”

Aftermath

It was discovered that two of Edwards’ team members, Lesley Dunlop (a geologist) and Dawn Keen (a forensic archaeologist) were not accredited professionals in their respective fields. Alan Bennett clarified in a Facebook post on 5th November 2022, in reference to Keen:
“Any professional archaeologist would ask for a scale in any pictures or video taken at a scene [in reference to the fact that police confirmed the object found was too small to be a juvenile jaw], that was not the case here and the reason police had to call in a photographic specialist to determine the scale of the supposed jawbone..which turns out to be too small for a child from what I've been told so far and, of course couldn't be found anyway and could only have been vegetation if anything at all.”
I am not entirely sure what the “blue and white striped fabric” turned out to be - I assume that nothing was found.
Alan has since posted evidence that Russell Edwards had been planning the “discovery of Keith’s remains” as part of a stunt to promote his upcoming book on the case - a book that Edwards has been radio-silent about since all of this controversy.
Edwards has refused to apologise to Keith’s family and despite being proven wrong, and him and his team being called out for the charlatans they are (with even him admitting that his own reputation is in tatters), as of December 2022 he stood by his actions and his claims that he believed he had found Keith’s body.
To my own understanding (though I do not speak on behalf of Alan Bennett or on behalf of anybody who was involved in this whole debacle, let me be clear), there has been complete radio-silence on news of Edwards’ book since this date.

2024.05.16 17:16 kenfromboston Attribution for "reprint" of published article (in PDF form)

I'm the production editor for a small-circulation quarterly magazine for a membership-based group, and the magazine articles are written by and submitted by members. One author has requested a PDF copy of their article, as published in the magazine. I'm knowledgeable about how to create the PDF and what the appropriate access should be allowed for the file, but I seem to recall that most reprints also contain some type of text that states that the article is a reprint, and refers to the magazine issue number, publication date, etc. I've done quite a bit of online searching for an example of this type of attribution, and so far I've found nothing. Any suggestions or references to online sources would be appreciated.
Thanks!

2024.05.16 17:03 trdawa Passport Request Documents Sent to Case Processing Centre - no department listed in address. Should I be worried?

I'm the principal applicant for Permanent Residency through Spousal Sponsorship (Outland) and I've gotten through the process very seamlessly until about now. So after my background check successfully was completed, they sent my passport copy request letter and the next day I mailed my documents along with a return envelope via FedEx to Case Processing Centre Ottowa. However, unfortunately the person helping me at Fed Ex did put the correct address but only put CPCO and not CPCO - PR VISA on the recipient line and then only Case Processing Centre on the second line. What should have been put was CPCO - PR VISA and US Permanent Residence Passports on the second line. This was a huge mistake on my part because in the moment the FedEx person was being super unhelpful and curt about helping me mail the documents and were angry with me because what I was giving them was 'past the character limits' for the package because I was trying to put the full 'US Permanent /Temporary Residence VISA/Passports' which is what was listed on my letter instead of me simply picking which situation was actually mine to shorten it.
I got confirmation via FedEx that the package was received by Shipping/Receiving at the processing centre the following day May 9th but it's been a week since I've sent it and I've gotten no email on whether they've received it or not. So now I'm having doubts and am very worried the package will be lost within the processing centre and not given to the right department. Has something like this happened to anyone else? I'm going back and forth on whether or not to send another package with all the materials and a letter stating that I made a mistake and this is the second time sending and explaining my situation. I filled out a web form explaining this situation to IRCC but they needed to receive the materials within 30 days so I'm also working with that time limit. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful at this point.

2024.05.16 16:59 TopAdventurous7811 Stripe closed my account citing falling "under one of our restricted businesses categories"

Hi,
In case anyone is curious, and for some brief background info, my business model is to sell game accounts. licensed, brand new copies of the game accounts, that are purchased from legitimate sources. I do not sell cracked accounts. Everything is done by the book. Pretty much the same thing as what one would receive when buying from G2G, for example.
I have had my stripe account since 2021, where they closed it within a month citing it fell under prohibited business category. I appealed and then they asked for all sorts of proof, such as supplier invoices, proof of what I'm selling, evidence that it is licensed copy of the game and not a bootleg, etc.
After some back and forth for a month, account got reinstated.
Been using the account since then, and haven't had any issues.
Dispute % is kept below 0.4%
3D Secure required for EVERY SINGLE PAYMENT made on my website since March - May 2022 (cant remember exactly when we added it). For example: Request 3DS if :amount_in_usd: > 1, and all sorts of block rules set up to combat fraud. Haven't really had any problems with fraud charges, as far as I can tell ever since 3DS was made compulsory.
All orders are fulfilled automatically and immediately once payment is made.

Fast forward today, I received an email saying the account got closed with this reason:

Unfortunately, following an additional review of your account, we’re still unable to support your business as it falls under one of our restricted businesses categories ( https://stripe.com/restricted-businesses ).
We’re sorry we can’t be of more help, but these restrictions are firm.
So I am trying to appeal, but it seems to be getting nowhere as customer support is unable to help. Is there any recourse for me to have it appealed?
I've been selling the same stuff for the past 3-4 years, so its really confusing and stressful to be undergoing all these out of the blue again.
If anyone can help provide some advice / insight, I'll greatly appreciate it.

2024.05.16 16:58 Yzerman19_ Update on recalled MAGA commissioners in Delta County. In an unexpected twist, they are rejecting the results. Buckle up for November.

ESCANABA — Swearing in ceremonies for the winners of the Delta County Board of Commissioners recall election held last week and a reorganizational meeting that was planned for Wednesday were scrapped Tuesday evening, after the Delta County Board of Canvassers failed to certify the election results.
“They’re basing their decision on the ratio of the votes, because two of (the races) have the exact same ratio and the third one was a similar ratio, so they think that that shows that the machines were somehow programmed with (an) algorithm,” said Delta County Clerk Nancy Przewrocki.
The results of the May 7 election were unusually consistent, with challengers Kelli Van Ginhoven and Matt Jensen each receiving 72% of the vote in their respective races, to incumbent commissioners Dave Moyle’s and Bob Petersen’s 27%. In the race between challenger Myra Croasdell and Incumbent Commissioner Bob Barron, the percentages were 73% and 26%, respectively.
Such results are atypical across races in elections for a number of reasons, including differences between the candidates, population density, and the cultural factors that make people choose to live in more- or less-populated areas.
But just because the results were unusual doesn’t mean they were wrong.
“I tried to tell them that the machines have been tested and the results came out exactly as they should. I have every confidence in our voting equipment because it’s always tested and in the recounts and the audits we have done, the ballot hand count has always come out exactly very close to … the tabulator results,” said Przewrocki.
It is also not the place of the board of canvassers to take results into account when deciding to certify the election. They serve a more administrative role, doing things like comparing the precinct poll books to reports from the precincts to look for internal consistency in the number of votes cast. According to Przewrocki, there were no inconsistencies that would warrant the election not being certified.
That didn’t stop two Republican canvassers from voting against the certification Tuesday. Bonnie Hakkola, who also serves as the local Republican party chair, and LeeAnne Oman, an alternate canvasser who also serves as the local Republican party secretary, both voted not to certify — splitting the board of canvassers 2-2 and blocking the certification.
A second meeting of the board of canvassers has been set for Monday at 9 a.m. It is possible that Oman would not participate in that hearing if Sema Deeds — the Republican canvasser Oman replaced Tuesday — is present. Deeds was unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting due to illness.
It is unlikely that Hakkola’s vote will change. A press release dated Monday but sent to the Daily Press late Tuesday by her son, Seth Hakkola, indicates local citizens working with members of Michigan-based groups that deny the validity of the 2020 presidential election have “identified certain statistical anomalies and suspicious voting ratios.”
Specifically, the release references local citizens working with Joanna Bakale, a prominent member of the Election Integrity Force, who is perhaps best known for advising poll watchers to call 911 if they see suspicious activity around voting machines in 2022; Citizens for Electoral Justice member Scott Aughney, a self-described “independent election investigator and whistleblower” who attempted to obtain a copy of Escanaba’s electronic poll book raw data file through a failed Freedom of Information Act request last year; and Former Republican State Senator Patrick Colbeck, of Michigan’s 7th District.
The release states the local citizens are “formally requesting a hand recount and forensic audit of the results.” According to Przewrocki, Hakkola had also requested a hand recount, but the board of canvassers is not authorized by law to conduct recounts as part of the certification process.
“I would love to do a hand count just to show them that there is absolutely nothing wrong with our tabulators,” said Przewrocki.
A recount of the ballots could still take place, but only after the election is certified. If it were to happen, it would have to be at the request of one of the candidates.
Technically speaking, Moyle, Petersen and Barron still serve as the county’s commissioners until their replacements can be put in place. If the election is not certified Monday, those board members would have to vote whether or not to hold the regularly scheduled meeting slated for Tuesday.
However, if the election is not certified Monday, there could be bigger issues. The certification process would be taken over by the State Board of Canvassers, which means Przewrocki and other local clerks would have to travel downstate with the ballots, election machines, poll books, and all other necessary documents and equipment to certify the election.
“Everything that we would have at our fingertips doing it here locally, we would have to bring downstate with us in case there needs to be a retabulation,” said Przewrocki.
The cost of the canvassing would also fall on the county.
Until the certification, Van Ginhoven, Croasdell, and Jensen cannot be sworn in and a reorganizational meeting cannot be held. Jensen and Croasdell were expected to be sworn in Wednesday morning and Van Ginhoven was slated to be sworn in Monday, but all three ceremonies have been postponed. A reorganizational meeting also set for Wednesday was postponed, pending the certification.

2024.05.16 16:58 scuba-san Rockstar forced me to pirate

As you may know, you have to have a Rockstar Social Club account to play RDR2 or GTA V, which in itself is ridiculous.
Even more ridiculous is that their support refuses to help you recover the account if you lose access to the email you used. I sent all of the information requested (Steam ID, CD Key, Receipt, etc.). Even after mentioning many times I didn't have access to my old email, they told me to 'provide a screenshot of the receipt in your email inbox'' and then, later, when I explained that was impossible, to 'provide the date in which the Steam account was linked to the Social Club account', which, again, is impossible without access to the old email.
When I requested to speak to a Tier 3 agent, and asked for a suggestion of how I can provide that information without access to my email, my ticket was closed TWICE. Their response both times was as follows:
"We have investigated, but have been unable to verify that this request is being made from the owner of the Rockstar Games account where you would like to change the information on."
I presume they think think this is because I had to create a NEW Social Club account in order to even get a support ticket going, and I presume the idiot thought I was trying to recover for that new account.
If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing. From the bottom of my heart, FUCK YOU ROCKSTAR and I will never buy another Social Club required game from them ever again. Internet required single player games are an oxymoron and I can only presume they give other people this same run around in hopes they give up and buy the game all over again - which wouldn't even work because you can't buy two copies of a game on one Steam account. Which would mean I'd hypothetically have to create a second Steam account, which I'm definitely not doing.
I've heard people have had success in recovery before, but that wasn't the case for me after submitting FOUR separate tickets.
Thanks, Rockstar, for forcing me to pirate because of your shitty system of trying to control players and harvest their data.

2024.05.16 16:44 staplehill StAG 5 application of Youtuber approved after 2 years

"Drive Hard" is a Youtube channel that is mostly devoted to automobile content but the host also posted a video about her StAG 5 application with several updates in the description and comments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NAavHm2rcg
She was born in 1967 in wedlock to a German mother and an American father. "My family saved all the paperwork for every step of their way from East Germany, to West Germany in 1948, the time spent in a refugee camp in Brake, Germany until they left Germany for the USA in 1952. Because of this, I am able to execute the entire process on my own, getting original German documents copied, and notarized. (...) For me, this entire process has cost about $115"
May 21, 2022: Chicago consulate confirms that the application is in order and was forwarded to BVA
October 2023: BVA requests additional documents, those are sent at the end of December
May 15, 2024: Notice of naturalization received. "I now have the choice of having my certificate mailed to me, or I can pick it up in person at the Chicago Consulate. If I go in person, I can submit my application for the passport at the same time."

2024.05.16 16:41 no_commet Charge for patient file transfers (new GP)

Hey there,
I recently moved and found a new Doctor luckily, I sent the form to request my patient files to be transferred from my old GP to the new one and they're telling me it costs $52 and I can pay by cash or check in person, it's about a 3 hour drive away. Is this legal/normal practice?
Edit: I didn't realize this wasn't insured/covered by OHIP. Anyway if anyone else has a similar question in the future, it looks like the reccommended charge (from Ontario Medical Association, as of January 2024) is $30 for electronic transfer, or $30 for the first 20 pages (printed copies) then $0.25 per page thereaftor, then $45 after first 15 minutes, per 15minutes for physician review if needed.

2024.05.16 16:40 randobburner I'm so tired of being scared.

I'm 19 now. I met my ex friend around 2 years ago? So when I was 17. He was a year younger.
Trigger warning: SI/SH/SA
My ex friend was a covert narcissist (a narcissist that hides under insecurity and a need for validation, while their abusive tendencies and lack of empathy remains the same.)
I stood up for him, so much. I tried to validate him, I tried to please him but it was never enough. Even though I’ve been abused twice by narcissists, I never saw it coming.
And the reason I didn't catch it, is because when we first met, he said he had autism. So I trusted him, because he said he was always honest, and because he blamed his toxic tendencies on autism. He seemed so sad, and I wanted to support him. I left friends for him, I stood up for him when people talked bad about him.
To be clear, I'm not being ableist towards autistic people. This is not because of him not understanding social cues or anything like that. The main reason why I left him was because he called himself the "worst kind of narcissist" and even after I told him that was offensive to victims of abuse he just said, “oh.” Like I'm not even joking that was his exact response.
And when I tried to help him (I thought he was gaslighting himself) and my followers who might feel the same way (by making posts about how victims can gaslight themselves into thinking they're the abuser, by talking about narcissism and my own experiences with abuse,) he got really mad and told me "I suspect I have NPD,” and “the only reason why you posted that was because of me, the mere fact that you posted that shows that you look down on me, you have been extremely rude blah blah blah.” Notice that I do not cite him feeling offended by the content of what I posted, because he never said anything about that at all. Is it possible? Sure. But I am sick of feeling like I have to read his mind, I know now that it’s because of his toxic behaviors and manipulation.
I left him after that because he knew I had trauma from abuse, and he’s never been sensitive to that throughout our entire friendship.
I’ll call my ex-friend narcissist to spare myself the drama if he ever finds out what I posted. (He has 30,000 followers online and most of our mutual friends openly sided with him.)
This was a pattern with him. The way he acted whenever he was corrected, it was never an apology, it was him or his friend changing the subject. Oftentimes instead of apologizing he would start to nitpick what others did, like calling others “bad at writing,” and saying stuff like “I'm a better writer than all of you!” These toxic traits are not intrinsic to autism, and are clearly narcissism, right?
I would bring up more examples but obviously I can’t remember them all.
Many of the things he would say were really offensive and degrading towards me, even in group chats, but he would hide it behind a “joke.” None of his friends defended me because they clearly enable him or just didn’t believe me when I say he treated me like sh*t.
But anyways, here are some of the wonderful things he’s said:
“KS” (he knew that I have struggled with MDD and sal ideation for a long time. And he even said it himself, “I shouldn’t say that, (my name) would actually do it.” And he didn’t stop after that. He says this as a joke to a lot of scidal people. I never thought he wouldn’t actually care if I did or not, because I never expected such blatant cruelty from anyone.)
“Your mom isn’t that bad.” (I talked about my experiences with abuse with him on multiple occasions. She puts on a smile and is nice to visitors but she has prevented me from going in-patient when I was actively s*cidal amongst other things. He knew that she basically allowed me to strve myself etc. while calling me “ungrateful” and “selfish” when I didn’t perform well enough in school due to the abuse.)
This next one is so clearly awful, that it’s actually funny that he thinks it was okay to say.
“Me and his mom <3” and “I miss your mom’s cooking so much.” (He said this in a group chat full of strangers to me. After I reminded him I was abused by her, he said, “hate the artist not the art.”)
“Get therapy!” (After I told him about my experience with sual trauma. He has some himself, so it’s possible he was triggered. But we had another mutual friend who would talk about that stuff and would talk about s and he never had a problem with it.)
“Ped*phile” (I used to have a crush on him,) (I’m only a year older, so 17-18) he thought this was a funny joke to make in a group chat full of strangers.
“I want your shirt. Take it off” (I said I'm not wearing anything underneath, and he said “I don’t see a problem with that.” That was in public, I barely knew him at that point.)
“I hate you” and many other things along those lines.
“Get a job!” And “be my sugar daddy” (again, in a group chat full of strangers. I couldn’t get a job due to my eczema which was oftentimes a 10 on the pain scale!)
Some of these things, I didn’t have a problem with back then, because I have never been treated well and didn’t have any sense of self-worth. So I never said anything about it and blamed myself for being "oversensitive"
His actions didn’t really ever show love for me, besides public hugs and affection. He would frequently respond to texts dryly and I just kept talking to him because I thought that was just his thing. I really did have a lot of love for him, but I realize now that that was just my desire for him to stop breadcrumbing me.
Much of my life was me viewing bullying and abuse as “they just struggle with showing that they care in healthy ways.” But the bullying would be things like “I bet she sits her wrists” and “you look like you’re on the verge of s*cide.” (While laughing, of course.)
He said it himself, that he was jealous of me and the fact that I was skinny and passed well as a pre-hormone therapy trans guy. We’re both trans. (I don’t know how people in this subreddit feel about that, but please separate your opinions on that from me. Please focus on the fact that we’re all victims of narcissistic abuse.)
I also have an eating disorder like him, and he would say stuff like “it can’t be as bad as mine because you're skinny.” And like… he knows my body image issues have to do with size and he would size up in public and make me feel short and small when he knew I was insecure about that. He made me feel worthless while calling me handsome in public!
While I was friends with him, the second I did anything that offended him or made him feel an “ick” he would be VERY aggressive about asserting his perspective and would not give any leniency to me.
Some of the things I did to give him the “ick” were jokes I made. I'm warning you though it's really weird and probably very out of place for this subreddit 😅
So I would draw things based on dumb memes like Sonic x Pikachu (as a joke, and he knew that it wasn't my idea, he saw the original meme.) I sent him a video once of like worms on a string bondage (it was a satire/skit not graphic/not like corn) when he asked for drawing ideas and he liked the video I sent him, so I drew his character like that and later he cites that as a reason why he avoided me. When he literally acted exactly the same when it happened and kept talking to me as normal. He also didn't like that I took a screenshot of something that was extremely unfortunate. Like on Instagram there's "notes" which is a new feature that shows everyone's notes lined up. And sometimes they end up next to each other in a very unfortunate way. Basically I had posted his dog's name in all caps 4 times, and my friend had posted "I wanna get him pregnant." (Not intentionally.) And you can guess how that went. Like he took that the wrong way but he never said anything and he acted the same way for months! And it wasn't his autism, because I did clarify that it was a joke, and he has literally no reason to believe that because I have always been a very open advocate for victims of SA, women's rights, like I've never once been that type of person. I literally stood up for him so many times because people called him a creep, I've left so many friends bc they bullied others (one friend was even being blamed for r*pe threats!) and he still “believed” that, knowing that.
And to be perfectly clear- this is what he said to me: “I was just icked out, I never thought you actually meant any of it," also "You seem to have calmed down a bit, and now I can enjoy my time with you even more than before!" But at the same time he was like "I avoided you" "I didn't want to be friends with you" and just he didn't give off a "maybe I misunderstood" impression. He gave off a "my way or the highway impression." I don't have the screenshots anymore because I deleted our chat, but I remember having a panic attack and thinking about s**cide afterwards. Whatever he said, he made me feel like such an awful, disgusting person.
He also said he thought I was “on something.” (I kinda was)
I was really medicated at the time, (around a year ago??) My meds made me both extremely tired and impulsive (trazodone and prozac.)
And to top it all off, he constantly said stuff like "I'm not a good person" and like?? Why would you think that's okay unless it's self deprication, unless you are an awful person (as I've realized recently.)
Like whenever he makes an offensive joke, it’s always “It’s just a harmless joke! Don’t be so sensitive” and whenever someone else does, he either ghosts you, avoids you, gives no hint about what you've done, or he treats you like you’re the worst person in the world and he’s giving you God's grace by telling you what you did wrong. He also makes a lot of "I'm a god" "I'm an angel" type jokes. I thought it was sarcasm before but honestly after this?
The kinds of things I would do were heavily influenced by him and our mutual friend group's behavior. I copied what they did because I had little to no social experience due to bullying and isolation. I literally never had friends before I turned 17. Save for maybe one. (Who I also kept at a distance because I was s***dal and didn't want to hurt them when I followed through.)
And back to the most recent thing he did (which gave me a panic attack and landed me in a psych ward)
The way he approached me about the posts about narcissism I made to help him and others was so accusatory and passive aggressive. (This was after the "worst kind of narcissist joke) Then his friend texted the GC saying “(my name) check your dms” so another act of passive aggression. This friend was the main enabler who’s logic honestly makes no sense to me. She’s like, “it’s fine for him to make that joke, it’s not his job to come out about having narcissism if he doesn't want to, blah blah blah, diagnoses are hard to get.” Like genuinely wtf. Dropping the f slur in the closet is not okay just because you're secretly gay. Like don't make jokes about things you're not willing to be out about. Okay and even ignoring that, it's still so fcking offensive even if he is a narcissist because that’s like a pedfile joking about abusing children.
And the fact he just said “oh.” after I told him it was offensive. Not “I suspect I have npd” or “I'm sorry that was insensitive.” His response was so vague, a blatant lack of effort and empathy, and genuinely I don't think someone with NPD who actually is trying to change would do that.
Then his friend started following me! Not as an act of friendliness, as a social threat, clearly, as they’ve already established a pattern of passive aggression.
It was clear, that if I removed her as a follower or blocked her I would be the one that looked bad! The same way it would look if I said “huh, I haven’t gotten any dms from you” after she said “hey (my name), check your dms” bc I could have deleted it in requests. Then she could say I was a liar. I was starting to get triggered the second she began blindly defending and making excuses for (narcissist) in the groupchat.
She then began to stalk my story, and when she got to the post about how I wouldn’t be able to go to the convention with them (I didn’t say it, but I was so triggered that I was planning on going to the psych ward!) she sent me the skull and crossbones emoji, which, if you're older, is a laughing emoji to this generation. (Meaning dead from laughter.)
Because of the timing of the follow, I know that (narcissist) has been talking shit. Also because they’re best friends and that's what they do. So I know for a fact now, that his last text “right okay,” was sarcasm. And I block all of them.
One of our mutual friends, who I will call (Redacted) was someone I used to talk to almost daily! (Redacted) unfollows me on tiktok, so I block them too.
I block most associated with the group chat, because as far as I know they don't care about me, they've never texted me or spoken to me before, and they’ve almost always ignored my texts to the group chat anyways. They’re also (narcissist)’s friends, and never stood up for me when it came to his behavior in the GC, and were for the most part silent and praising of him.
Like, genuinely, I'm pretty sure (redacted) saw my private posts about my “I feel so unsafe, I want to die, I want to die.” And they still valued whatever (narcissist) said over me. All that talk about “Ily pooks” and shit was a lie.
For additional context (I know this is getting really long, I'm sorry, I just don’t want to leave any room for people victim-blaming me.)
I also struggle with depression-linked psychosis. Something I also fear he will use against me if I ever come out about his treatment of me publicly (but here we are.) My diagnosis doesn’t necessarily include "breaks from reality" and "not being able to tell what's real and what's not." Psychosis occurs in varying intensities. For me, it's mostly depressive hallucinations and I can tell that they aren't real. Many of my hallucinations are auditory and I have never allowed that to impact the way I viewed or treated others in real life, even if they said horrible things to me. They cause me anxiety but it is manageable for me.
It was steadily getting better for me before they decided to do this shit to me! Now I'm worse off than before, hallucinating daily, while he’s living the life of his dreams, and getting famous online.
He refuses to take accountability and that is a form of manipulation. It works for him. To act stupid and act like he can't empathize. He does it whenever he makes a mistake. He starts nitpicking someone else's behavior no matter the impact it has on others. My issue with them is not just what they did, it’s the fact that they want to socially threaten others into doing their bidding. Like, they didn’t have to bring the group chat into it. They didn’t have to be passive aggressive. They didn’t have to be so accusatory and it doesn’t matter if they have trust issues because honestly they were being a massive dick to someone who was always on their side from day one. (Not anymore!)
What happened to him was “I feel insecure because I think he’s calling me stupid.” So he basically called me an asshole, told me I was being rude, etc. etc. What happened to me though? I attempted twice. I don’t handle gaslighting well. That’s how I was abused. And I’m sick of people telling me it’s not his fault for taking advantage of my lack of self-worth, for taking advantage of someone who he knew to be vulnerable. I’m sick of hearing that I just need to “get therapy” and that I'm “equally as bad” or even that “I'm being overdramatic” etc. They made me relive my trauma from bullying to the point where I was hallucinating almost all-day every day, about them bullying me in the same ways I was bullied back then. I would constantly hear their voices making fun of me, bullying me, etc., or them planning to pull up at my house and attempt vandalism (another trauma that I have.) I have not stopped hallucinating him and his friends to this day. This impacts my ability to eat, sleep, and work. It’s literally torture. And I can hear him right now, saying “well, that's not my fault.” Like yes it is. Believe it or not you’re not entitled to treating your (ex) friends like shit just because you have NPD.
The really bad hallucinations started after everything was over. They don't impact my ability to recall events because again most of my hallucinations are auditory.
Honestly I'm just sick of this crap. If you made it this far, I really appreciate the time you’ve spent reading this.
I'm really tired of the victim blaming honestly

2024.05.16 16:14 reddituserh6f Personal Information Request - What Does Loblaws Know About You?

One of Loblaws' edges in the market is the company's use of customer data. Loblaws collects data from its grocery operations, banking, pharmacy, and phone company and uses it to run its marketing programmes, including interest-based advertising, market research, "automated decision making", and tailoring products to audiences.
In some instances, they can even share your data to third parties.
In Canada, you have the right to request access to the personal data that companies hold about you.
If you are interested, you may want to submit a request to see your personal data to their Chief Privacy Officer at loblawprivacy@loblaw.ca, and they'll have 30 days to respond.
You might be interested in receiving a copy of all your personal data that Loblaws holds associated with your email address or phone number. You may also want to ask for a list of all third parties your data has been shared with. As is your right.
If they fail to respond to your request, you can submit a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Unfortunately, unlike companies in California, EU countries or the UK, Canadian companies typically don't take these requests seriously. While we have the rules on paper, with rare and selective enforcement, and no requirement to pay damages, they know that there really isn't any consequence for ignoring or partially-ignoring personal data requests.
Still, you may be interested in trying to see what data Loblaws holds about you.

2024.05.16 16:11 AffectionateLoad5268 Auto-meeting SLA on converted ticket?

I have a UI action set up to convert a request to an incident, which involved opening a new incident, copying over the relevant fields from the request, and deleting the original request.
For the most part this works fine, however our incidents and requests have a short response SLA attached. If the response SLA is met on the original request, and then it is converted to an incident hours later, the response SLA on the newly-created incident breaches because its open date is set to the open date of the original request.
Does anyone know how I can account for this? I think it could be done with some conditional logic which checks if the response SLA was met on the original request and if so adjusts the stop time on the new incident response SLA, but haven't quite got it figured out.

2024.05.16 15:59 crowninggloryhole All abilities park update

(Copying from FB- tl;dr: stay off the surface until fences are down, reward for arrested vandals, buy a brick!)
On behalf of the Rotary Club of Silverton, the City of Silverton, the Silverton Urban Renewal Agency, Marion County, and Maps Credit Union, as well as many, many other donors, we are excited to announce that installation of the final layer of surfacing for the Silverton All-Abilities Park is underway and should be completed by Saturday at the latest.
We are asking all people to stay off the park surface material until we have removed the fencing and opened the park for use – this is a very critical time, and the material must be allowed to cure for a period of time prior to being walked on. Ignoring this request and doing so anyway will cost the project several thousand dollars and could set back the timetable considerably as we may have to wait for more product to arrive if repairs are necessary.
We realize that people have continually crossed over or through the temporary fencing that we put in place to signal that the park was not ready to be used, and last week, one or more vandals decided it would somehow enrich their life/lives to share what they must have felt was an artful expression on the retaining wall as well as the platform that wheelchair users will need in order to gain access to the large climbing net.
As you might guess, this did not inspire warm and fuzzy feelings amongst our committee that has worked so hard for over two years to bring this park to reality. Two members of our Rotary Club have stepped forward and are working with the Silverton Police Department to offer $1,000 of their own funds as a reward leading to the successful identification and arrest of those responsible.
We will make similar, relentless efforts should anyone interfere with the park site between today (Wednesday, May 15), and Sunday, May 19. Please share this post and encourage your social media networks to spread the word that this is a very critical week for the park.
That said, if all goes well, we will be able to remove the temporary fencing on Sunday, put the teeter-totter in place on its base, and plan for the hanging of the swings. At that point, users of all ages will be welcome to explore the park and all it has to offer our community. That won’t, however, be the end of our work, it will just be the end of the waiting for the park to be available.
Our team will soon be installing two benches that have been ordered, several signs that are being completed, and upon arrival, will install the memorial bricks that so many of you have graciously ordered. Speaking of the bricks, our final ordering opportunity will close this Sunday, May 19 at midnight, PST. It is not too late to place YOUR order for a brick that will carry your message to this park and its users forever. To do so, please visit the following link: https://donate.brickmarkers.com/silverton.
From the bottom of our hearts, we’d like to thank the community for the patience that has been on display for the past eight or so months. The news in October that Mother Nature had spoken, and we’d have to wait for spring to install the surfacing was difficult for each of us to take, but we are so close to the soft opening of this park!
Stay tuned for information about completion of the benches, signage, and memorial bricks, which will lead to an official Grand Opening and recognition event for the donors of this project!

2024.05.16 15:52 scholesey19 Exclusive: Did Sacha Lord cheat his way to £400,000 of public money during the pandemic? - THE MILL

Today’s story raises serious questions about Sacha Lord, one of Greater Manchester’s most prominent business figures and a close advisor to Andy Burnham.
The Mill has obtained evidence that a security company controlled by Lord repeatedly lied in an application for Covid-19 support. As a result of the misleading application, the company then received over £400,000 of taxpayers’ money at the height of the pandemic.
We have seen a copy of the funding application, in which Lord’s business makes a series of false claims about what it does, calling itself “the backbone of the national creative events sector”.
Mark Turnbull, a former director of the company, has told us on the record that he believes Lord’s company is guilty of fraud and should be investigated by the police. “It’s a disgrace,” Turnbull told The Mill, questioning whether his former business partner should be allowed to continue as Greater Manchester’s nighttime economy advisor.
A spokesperson for Lord says that the version of the application seen by The Mill, which was released under the Freedom of Information Act and is redacted in places, does not accurately reflect what the company submitted. The spokesperson says the Arts Council requested information about the application in late 2022 and was "satisfied with the evidence provided". Lord chose not to answer our detailed questions about the application.

2024.05.16 15:15 BlvckDaria2 Hit & Run steps

Hi all,
So I was involved in a hit & run the other day. I provided both the plate to the vehicle and the plate of the trailer to my insurance carrier who claim it has come back with nothing. I have uninsured motorist coverage.
However I have no actual evidence that my insurance ran these plates and that their results have been 0. When I requested a copy of the tag trace they told me they could not supply it without an affidavit. Is this true?
I feel if they’re my insurance and have done something in the investigation of my claim they should be able to at least provide proof but maybe I’m wrong.
Yes, I will be consulting with an attorney.

Why you need to remove yourself from US Search

Data brokers like US Search and many others, collect sensitive personal details from public records. They aggregate this information into detailed personal profiles, which are sold to anyone interested or published online to drive site traffic. When someone looks up your name on Google, these profiles appear in the search results, revealing your home address, phone numbers, emails, family connections, and more. This exposure heightens your risk of spam, phishing attacks, online scams, fraud, identity theft, stalking, doxxing and even home intrusions.

You can opt out of USSearch effortlessly and quickly by subscribing to automated data broker removal services like Onerep.

Vladimir Putin has landed in Beijing for a two-day state visit, where he was greeted by Chinese leader Xi Jinping with a red-carpet welcome and a full military band. The trip will build on their commitment to the "no limits" relationship they signed at the Winter Olympics in 2022, just before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As Russia becomes isolated from the West on the world stage, it has sought to boost trade in the East and elsewhere, helping prop up its economy in the face of sanctions.
Quote: "Relations between Russia and China are not opportunistic and not directed against anyone," Putin declared. "Our cooperation in international matters is one of the stabilizing factors in the international arena." Xi echoed the sentiment, adding that China will "work together to achieve the development and rejuvenation of our respective countries" and "to uphold equity and justice in the world."
Trade between the two nations has soared to record levels, rising 26% last year to $240B and hitting targets ahead of schedule. Russia has even overtaken Saudi Arabia as China's main oil supplier, while the latter sends back key commodities, vehicles and other consumer goods. Trade has also seen Russia's economy top expectations to expand by 3.6% in 2023, according to the IMF, despite Western efforts aimed at draining the Kremlin's war coffers.
Reaction? Wall Street Breakfast ran a survey last November, and again this week, on how the U.S. should manage its economic relationship with China. The biggest changes over the past six months showed that more subscribers have less faith in rapprochement and trade deals (24% to 15%), while a greater number believe decoupling and sanctions are the way to go (11% to 19%). It's noteworthy as Washington has recently threatened additional sanctions on Chinese banks and entities that handle Russian trade involving dual-use goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes. How does all of this factor into your investing decisions? Join the discussion in the comments section.
Soft CPI Thought the Fed was only data dependent? Guess again. Data-centric traders celebrated in style after April's Consumer Price Index increased by 0.3% from March, easing from the +0.4% pace seen in the previous three months. The print, which meant inflation is still running well above the 3% level on an annualized basis, helped push Wall Street indices to new record highs, with the S&P 500 (SP500) crossing 5,300 for the first time ever. Meanwhile, retail sales came in flat, while regional business activity cooled further, suggesting the Fed could ease monetary policy earlier than expected. (119 comments)

Ultimate Guide to Applying for SETC Online: Streamline Your Process
https://getcaresacttaxcredit.com/setc
The Self-Employed Tax Credit (SETC) is a unique opportunity for self-employed professionals to receive financial relief needed after the COVID-19 pandemic. Applying online for the SETC is a streamlined path designed to enhance accessibility and convenience, ensuring that eligible individuals can claim their tax credits with minimum hassle. The SETC serves as a vital financial support mechanism, specifically tailored for self-employed citizens, offering them a chance to mitigate some of the tax burdens associated with their entrepreneurial endeavors.
Applying online is easy and takes only a few minutes to complete. Now, it’s also possible to receive the tax refund within 15 to 20 days with an advance payout option. Normally, the IRS can take up to 5 months to pay the refund.

Understanding the SETC

The Self-Employed Tax Credit (SETC) was created by the US Congress as part of the CARES act specifically for the self-employed, particularly in the wake of financial uncertainties like those prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Designed as a refundable tax credit, the goal of the SETC is to alleviate the tax burden on those who run their own businesses or are freelancers, offering a significant financial reprieve by allowing a maximum of $32,220 in tax credit. Since this is not a loan, but a tax credit, there is no repayment required. This initiative underscores the United States government's recognition of the unique challenges faced by self-employed citizens, providing a much-needed financial cushion.
Qualifying for the SETC involves specific criteria, primarily targeting self-employed people who were affected by the pandemic. Most people are unaware that this tax credit is available to them and may not believe that it is legitimate, but it is. Once the completed form is submitted, the money can be received within 15 to 20 days if the advanced payout is utilized.

Preparing Your SETC Application

Preparing your SETC (Self-Employed Tax Credit) application is really very simple. All that is needed is access to the 2020 and 2021 tax returns filed by the self-employed person who is filing to claim their tax refund. If the person received at least one 1099 form during the tax years of 2020 and/or 2021, they are probably eligible to receive a tax refund.
Important to the SETC application process is proof of your self-employed status. This can be furnished through documents like 1099 forms, if applicable, or other official paperwork that verifies your business's existence and operations. Family status also factors into the application, requiring documentation that reflects your current household composition, as this can influence the credit amount.
Given the digital nature of the application process, applicants are encouraged to have digital copies of their tax returns from 2020 and/or 2021 available to upload. Ensure that all documents are clear, legible, and up-to-date to prevent any delays in the processing of your application. Preparing these documents meticulously before starting your application not only streamlines the submission process but also increases your chances of a successful SETC claim.

Conclusion

Freelancers, entrepreneurs, and independent contractors navigating the complexities of self-employment can benefit in many ways, primarily, financially from submitting a claim for their SETC. Doing so only takes a few minutes and could result in up to $32,220 in a tax refund which is certainly worth the short amount of time required to fill out the online form and upload a few tax return documents.
So take advantage of the SETC as soon as possible as there is a time factor involved. Claims must be received no later than April 25, 2025. And the sooner you request your tax refund, the sooner you will receive your money.

Devs To Devs: How To Avoid Common Developers’ Mistakes On GitHub

The digital age is an age of opportunity. But along with opportunities come risks and problems. Developing modern software is a complex task that requires attention to detail and a wide knowledge of many aspects of programming. But even experienced programmers can make mistakes that can lead to a host of problems, such as bugs, performance issues, or security vulnerabilities. Let’s take a look at some of the most common mistakes developers make when working with GitHub. Whether you’re a novice programmer taking your first steps or a seasoned expert looking to improve your skills, this article should help you avoid common pitfalls when working with the popular version control system. With this knowledge, we should create better solutions that are reliable, efficient, and secure.
In recent years, GitHub has become an essential tool for developers to collaborate and manage source code. However, using this tool can also lead to some common developer mistakes that can have a significant impact on the development process. One of the most frequent problems is simply the improper use of version control. And this can lead to loss of code and, most importantly, to the waste of our most precious resource: time.
An example of a mistake is not regularly making changes to the repository, which leads to confusion and a lack of insight into the development process. In addition, failure to update repositories can cause merge conflicts. This is not a terrible thing, but on the other hand, poor management of code merge policies can lead to wasted time when resolving conflicts. We also need to be alert to the fact that improper handling of sensitive information in repositories can lead to security vulnerabilities. Being aware of such common GitHub errors is the first step in avoiding them, and with the right knowledge, developers can ensure that their code is organized, secure, and manageable.

Popular developers’ mistakes

None of us is infallible. However, the most common reason for developers’ mistakes is a lack of knowledge. Increasing awareness and proper education allow us to minimize risks and create better solutions. So let’s check out some common slip-ups that happen even to experienced programmers.
  • branch deletion
The risk may be associated with deleting branches, especially if they contain important code changes. Removal of a branch permanently erases all associated code, commits, and history, which in most cases cannot be restored. It’s important to carefully review the code changes and consider the potential risks before deleting any branches on GitHub. In addition, it’s a good practice to regularly back up code changes and ensure that important changes are properly merged into the main codebase.
  • removal of the old repository
Deleting the repository – on purpose or by mistake – could result in the permanent loss of this information if the repository was not properly backed up or archived. I don’t need to say that this can be quite dangerous to a project or organization. Additionally, if the repository contained any sensitive information, such as passwords or access keys, deleting it without properly securing or disposing of that information can put us or our organizations at risk of security breaches and data leaks. It is super important to carefully consider the potential consequences before deleting any old GitHub repositories.
  • losing a local copy
On the one hand, this point seems like a minor problem. After all, we have an external repository; we can create another local copy at any time and continue working. Apparently, yes, but even in this situation, we will lose some time (depending on the size and complexity of the project) to start the environment again. However, this is only a minor inconvenience.
A much greater risk, on the other hand, is when, for example, we create some PoC from scratch, checking certain things before we share or show our work to others. It may then happen that our local copy is the only existing version.
It doesn’t matter if this happens due to hardware failure, accidental deletion, or any other reason. The result can be the loss of important code changes, documentation, or any other project-related data. Subsequently, this can result in lost time and effort to restore lost work, missed deadlines, and potential damage to the organization’s reputation. If the repository has not been backed up to another device or cloud storage service, it may not be possible to recover lost data. And it will only be our fault.
  • hardware loss
This topic has already been partially covered above. Hardware failures can result in the loss of our local data. But after all, even if we are doing everything right on our local side, a failure can affect the external server that hosts our repository. A total failure of GitHub is unlikely to threaten us, but what about the situation when we host our repository on our own? Usually, we have a separate department or people in charge of administration for this, and it is not the responsibility of a programmer. However, in a small startup, who knows? We may be responsible for many things, and our own hosting can always fail, so we need to have a backup prepared for such situations.
  • problems with credentials or authentication
When working with GitHub, it is very important to ensure that access to repositories is properly managed and controlled. If credentials are compromised or authentication protocols are not properly implemented, unauthorized individuals can access sensitive information or modify code without proper permissions. This may have very serious consequences for companies, organizations, or individuals. To mitigate this risk, it is important to follow access control best practices, implement two-factor authentication, and regularly monitor access logs to detect any suspicious activity.
  • committed secrets
This is my “favorite” part. Unfortunately, it is still a very common problem. It usually concerns access to databases in various environments, but not only that. This may come as a surprise to many, but such a phenomenon is not only widespread but has actually been increasing in recent years! This is confirmed by reports such as ‘The State of Secrets Sprawl 2023′ by GitGuardian. For example, according to Cybernews, around 18K out of 30K investigated Android apps are leaking secrets! Not enough? One in ten GitHub users who made a push in 2022 accidentally exposed a secret.
This is doubly important in today’s IT world, full of cloud services like GCP or AWS. Such platforms charge based on the number of servers/requests etc. If we carelessly or ignorantly expose our cloud platform credentials we may end up consuming unplanned resources, and end up with a hefty bill for services we didn’t plan to perform. This is one of the most painful developer mistakes.
GitHub addresses this and provides a solution called “secret scanning.” It doesn’t solve the problem completely, but it makes it easier for us to control and track the accidental placement of secrets in our repositories. More about that tool you can find in GitHub Docs.
  • access control and protected areas
One of the key advantages of using GitHub is the ability to control access to repositories. Thanks to that, we can easily manage and restrict access to the code. At the repository level, we can set permissions to define who has read or written access to the code. This can be configured on a per-user or per-team basis, providing fine-grained control over who can do what in the codebase. In addition, we can also control access to specific branches within a repository, or limit who can merge changes or make modifications to certain areas of the code.
GitHub supports organization-level permissions, enabling centralized control over access to multiple repositories. This allows organizations to easily and effectively manage access at a higher level and ensure consistent permissions across all our repositories.
We can also control the access through the use of deploy keys, which allow for secure authentication and access to specific repositories or servers. This provides an additional layer of security, ensuring that only authorized individuals or systems can access sensitive code or data.
  • use of private GitHub accounts
The main problem with private accounts is that their use can lead to a lack of transparency and visibility of the code base. As a result, this makes it difficult for managers or other team members to track progress or provide feedback. Additionally, with respect to the aforementioned mistake, using private accounts can make it difficult to enforce access controls and security protocols, potentially leading to data breaches or other security issues. Using private accounts and/or not configuring them properly also leads to a lack of accountability, as it is more difficult to track who made changes.
  • leaving things out of repositories
This one is very common and also difficult to track. People sometimes treat the GitHub repository as a place only for storing their code. But what about graphics? What about the configuration? Source code is just one component of a project. Maybe the biggest, but not the only one. A complex configuration or setup required to build a project should be accompanied by documentation on the installation process and stored with the code. Otherwise, the code is useless if it cannot be built on another machine. Another point on our GitHub mistakes list.

Consequences of developers’ mistakes

The above list is just a sampling of some common developers’ mistakes when working with GitHub. Some of them seem so trivial that we are certain that we (or our employees) don’t make them, yet you can never be sure of anything. What is important is that our mistakes can have serious consequences, like accidentally losing some important piece of code or exposing sensitive information in a repository.
These errors can cause us a lot of damage. Let me point out “only” delays in project timelines, loss of productivity, or even compromise of the security of the project or exposure to ransomware attacks. Nowadays, it is very important for us and our customers to have some security certifications, so such situations are unacceptable. We don’t want our company or project to be found as an anti-pattern in reports such as GitGuardian. Therefore, every developer needs to take the necessary precautions, and do as much as possible to minimize the impact of mistakes on GitHub.

How to minimize risk

So what can we do in this situation? Of course, the first and most important step is to educate ourselves and become aware of the risks associated with the above errors and their consequences. A good knowledge of Git VCS technology is the foundation for avoiding popular Git errors. But it is not enough. Knowledge of the GitHub platform, and how to configure our projects and repositories, is another key issue. The aforementioned secret-scanning tool by GitHub or third-party tools like gitLeaks, for example, can be very helpful in avoiding such errors in our code.
Considering all the dangers and their potential consequences, it is crucial to have proper DevOps backup solutions in place, like GitProtect.io backup and Disaster Recovery software GitHubhttps://gitprotect.io/github.html. Being able to recover our data in case of any failure, regardless of the cause, is something essential in today’s IT world. Additionally, proper education on the use of GitHub and the risks associated with it can help us avoid common mistakes. By taking these steps, we and our teams can work more confidently and effectively with GitHub while minimizing the potential for mistakes and data loss.
